:00:56. > :00:59.Hello, welcome to a new series of Ski Sunday. We are back in the
:00:59. > :01:05.mountains to printed the best winter sport action from across the
:01:05. > :01:09.planet. We are in the hands of Andrea, one of the biggest storms
:01:09. > :01:19.in the last decade, which means an incredible amount of snow and a
:01:19. > :01:20.
:01:20. > :01:24.fantastic Ski Sunday 2012. For the next two months, we will give you
:01:25. > :01:29.the best of the skiing at racing, with the biggest names in the sport.
:01:29. > :01:34.Nothing is stopping you from going faster. From the longest to the
:01:34. > :01:38.most terrifying, we will have all of the downhill drama. We will be
:01:38. > :01:46.catching up with the best of British, the men and women
:01:46. > :01:52.threatening to take the Olympics in 2014 by storm. What a season we
:01:52. > :02:02.have ahead, we start in Switzerland with the men's giant slalom. It is
:02:02. > :02:13.
:02:13. > :02:23.Later, an exclusive look at life on the women's tour. Plus, I catch up
:02:23. > :02:28.with Jenny Jones, the golden girl of British snowboarding. Here, it
:02:28. > :02:33.is giant slalom. What can we expect? This is one of the toughest
:02:33. > :02:39.courses on the World Cup circuit, it changes to rain at the top, and
:02:39. > :02:44.it drops onto a steep finish, into the arena. With all of the noise
:02:44. > :02:50.and excitement, and a lot of pressure on the racist as they dive
:02:50. > :02:57.over. -- pressure on the racers. The race organisers have spent two
:02:57. > :03:03.nights clearing the snow, and it is back down to the bullet-proof ice.
:03:03. > :03:09.Put your money where your mouth is. I think Ted Ligeti has got a point
:03:09. > :03:16.to prove, he has been the best for the pest -- for the past two years,
:03:16. > :03:23.but he has never won on this course. It is not a risky call, in the form
:03:23. > :03:27.he is in. He is under pressure, there are two youngsters coming
:03:27. > :03:32.through, the young Frenchman, he started the season with a second
:03:32. > :03:38.place, and then there is Marcel Hirscher, he is exciting to watch,
:03:38. > :03:46.and he is on a winning streak, full of confidence. But never roll-out
:03:46. > :03:51.Aksel Lund Svindal. We will put it to the test. Here are the few facts
:03:51. > :03:59.about our Adelboden that you almost certainly did not know. Some of
:03:59. > :04:04.these facts might be stretching the truth just a little bit!
:04:04. > :04:12.We love for a fact, and this is the turn of Adelboden. This was the
:04:12. > :04:15.destination for the first ever skiing package holiday. It was an
:04:15. > :04:22.entrepreneur who bought but report the first band of British skiers
:04:22. > :04:31.here, and he founded the travel agents Lunn Poly. Unfortunately,
:04:31. > :04:38.the fledgling tourist industry took a hit when reports of an aggressive
:04:38. > :04:43.animal reached the outside world! It is a funny story! It has twice
:04:43. > :04:48.won the gold medal off would stacking! It is something that the
:04:48. > :04:55.locals take immense pride in! have never heard of that! I cannot
:04:55. > :04:59.confirm that! Adelboden is home to the oldest chalet built by the
:04:59. > :05:06.World Association of Girl Guides and scouts. They have been coming
:05:06. > :05:13.here to enjoy the resort since the 30s. The focus this week is on the
:05:13. > :05:19.World Cup. Do you know what you're the first race was held? -- what
:05:20. > :05:29.year? 56 years ago? That is the wrong answer. The race has been
:05:30. > :05:30.
:05:30. > :05:34.running for 57 years. The first race was held a 1955. -- held in
:05:34. > :05:41.1955. This race is a classic, and year after year, all of the big
:05:41. > :05:48.names are here. They like to do things a little different here. On
:05:48. > :05:55.the Friday night before the race, the top seeds enter via his
:05:55. > :05:59.appliance over the ground. This is a tiny crowd in comparison to the
:05:59. > :06:06.25,000 spectators who will be here tomorrow, guaranteeing an intense
:06:06. > :06:12.atmosphere. Luckily for the organisers, the sky
:06:12. > :06:18.cleared last night, and at 4 am, they had taken the new snow off the
:06:18. > :06:22.piste. Half a metre has fallen in the last couple of days. They then
:06:22. > :06:27.plugged the water injection Parkin and injected water at a depth of a
:06:27. > :06:37.fort underneath the piste. That froze hard, and it made for a
:06:37. > :06:38.
:06:38. > :06:46.challenging first run. Despite his coach's enthusiasm, this was the
:06:46. > :06:53.first casualty. The German did not fare much better. Not the most
:06:53. > :07:00.dignified way to cross the finish line! Last year's runner, Cyprien
:07:00. > :07:05.Richard, putting a strong time. Nobody could top this year's top
:07:05. > :07:11.two. Ted Ligeti looked well placed to start the second run with the
:07:11. > :07:19.lead, but Marcel Hirscher pipped him, despite a lost ball. 0.7
:07:19. > :07:24.seconds celebrating them. France's young hotshot look set for a top-
:07:24. > :07:34.three placing, only for a big mistake to leave him frustrated in
:07:34. > :07:35.
:07:35. > :07:42.17th place. Italy's interests were kept alive with a masterclass of
:07:42. > :07:47.skier and, third place. The Austrian made it big move, putting
:07:47. > :07:57.himself in contention, in sixth place. The tricky course proved too
:07:57. > :07:58.
:07:58. > :08:03.much for some of the big names. Bode Miller never really got going.
:08:03. > :08:11.This year hit the ice in spectacular fashion. The Frenchman
:08:11. > :08:15.failed to escape -- failed to stay on two skis. Most of the focus was
:08:15. > :08:21.on the second run, which would cram the winner of the Ardel Boden giant
:08:21. > :08:25.slalom. -- crowned the winner. The course is set for the second run,
:08:25. > :08:31.it is a different pattern of gates, but it is equally as tough. It
:08:31. > :08:35.looks like the snow is coming in. They will not be able to see all of
:08:35. > :08:40.the bumps. It will be very challenging. I get the feeling that
:08:40. > :08:46.the skier who makes the least mistakes will win. The atmosphere
:08:46. > :08:56.is building. Marcel Hirscher leads, but he only has 0.7 seconds on 10
:08:56. > :09:17.
:09:17. > :09:21.joint winner here 12 months ago. He shared the win with Cyprien Richard.
:09:21. > :09:27.This is good work, he is covering it up nicely. He has picked up a
:09:27. > :09:37.lot of speed, but it is too much speed. He could not make the right
:09:37. > :09:44.
:09:44. > :09:50.footed term, and he skids out into block. He shot to fourth place in
:09:50. > :10:00.the standings. He has form, winning the World Junior Championships in
:10:00. > :10:15.
:10:15. > :10:20.team made up. -- over his team-mate. Full attack at the top. Half-French,
:10:20. > :10:30.half Norwegian. He got airborne there. He managed to control the
:10:30. > :10:33.
:10:33. > :10:40.landing. He is looking for the tuck position. He has a huge lead it. --
:10:40. > :10:50.huge lead. A little late over the last couple of turns, but he will
:10:50. > :11:00.
:11:00. > :11:05.good first run, but he made a big mistake. The second run was as
:11:05. > :11:15.close to the fences as you can get. He has thrown down the gauntlet to
:11:15. > :11:24.
:11:24. > :11:32.the top. It goes relatively flat afterwards for a little while. He
:11:32. > :11:39.was third here 12 months ago. A couple of emergency manoeuvres. He
:11:39. > :11:48.has paid the price for the mistakes. He trails by just over a quarter of
:11:48. > :11:54.a second. No sunshine to show the way, it is flap like all the way. -
:11:54. > :12:04.- it is flat light. You just have to anticipate the best you can, and
:12:04. > :12:05.
:12:05. > :12:09.take a gamble. He is coming towards the conclusion. He is all over the
:12:09. > :12:19.place. Age huge jump. He went through the middle of the gate
:12:19. > :12:32.
:12:32. > :12:42.He has got the breaks on. He has run out of gas. He might just sneak
:12:42. > :12:44.
:12:44. > :12:49.into second. The house. -- he has. He is exhausted.
:12:49. > :12:55.Ivica Kostelic comes from a family of skiers, and he had a spectacular
:12:55. > :12:58.season last year, his titles built upon a series of blistering winds
:12:58. > :13:07.in January, and he will do everything he can to stop this year
:13:07. > :13:17.in similar fashion. -- to start this year.
:13:17. > :13:18.
:13:18. > :13:23.He had a good first run. Despite all of his achievements, he has
:13:23. > :13:28.never won a World Cup giant slalom race. Slalom has always been his
:13:28. > :13:35.speciality. Last year, he won the overall title. But this is the
:13:35. > :13:45.discipline that eludes him. He should be when ink. -- he should be
:13:45. > :14:01.
:14:01. > :14:11.coming into the pitch. A nice early turn. Is it too conservative? He is
:14:11. > :14:15.only third. He holds his head. As he came on to the finish, he
:14:15. > :14:21.wiped his goggles, because it is almost rain in, it is almost
:14:21. > :14:31.snowing. He had an eye on the overall World Cup, he was not
:14:31. > :14:44.
:14:44. > :14:49.really pushing it. He was just had a few injury problems at the
:14:49. > :14:56.start of the season, but he is back to full fitness now. He is keen to
:14:56. > :15:06.start the year on his success followed. -- on a successful note.
:15:06. > :15:13.
:15:13. > :15:18.Tay lost a bit of time. But he is couple of tents, has to harness
:15:18. > :15:23.that speed now as he approaches the final quarter and this face down
:15:23. > :15:29.towards the finish, which catches so many of them out - a little
:15:29. > :15:35.check sideways, might have lost a little bit of his speed. Next split,
:15:36. > :15:40.2.26.14 for the Frenchman. Baumann is just ahead - only 15/100. Can't
:15:41. > :15:50.afford any mistakes on the final steep pitch. Loads of Austrians
:15:51. > :15:53.
:15:53. > :15:59.here watching on, and Baumann is skiing it cleanly. He gets it, not
:15:59. > :16:04.by much, but enough, 8 1/100 of a second in front. What I
:16:04. > :16:08.particularly like about him is he's so smooth on his edges. He doesn't
:16:08. > :16:10.get that whip of some of the lighter, more aggressive skiers,
:16:10. > :16:15.but particularly there these conditions when the course is bad,
:16:15. > :16:25.he's so smooth and so loose and took the lead off Pinturault -
:16:25. > :16:33.
:16:33. > :16:39.way here. He's tasted plenty of success here - three times he has
:16:39. > :16:45.been the champion of this classic giant slalom. He thrives in these
:16:45. > :16:49.conditions. Look at him pushing at the start, terrific speed from
:16:49. > :16:54.Bennie Raich, who missed most of last season with a terrible injury.
:16:54. > :17:02.He's really going - now half a second up, Baumann, Pinturault,
:17:02. > :17:09.Fanara, the one-two-three. Raich is hungry for more success. He's
:17:10. > :17:13.getting quicker - .64 up, a master class so far from Bennie Raich. Now,
:17:13. > :17:17.then, he knows this hill better than just about anybody as he
:17:17. > :17:20.ploughs through the middle of that gate. Didn't affect his
:17:20. > :17:29.concentration, wonderful mental strength to ignore what just went
:17:29. > :17:37.on. And he focuses on the final steep section, and what focus from
:17:37. > :17:42.Raich, 1.33 seconds ahead. He's miles away from everybody else -
:17:42. > :17:46.lovely turns, wonderful carved turns from Ben Raich. He'll cruise
:17:46. > :17:49.into first position - 1.2 seconds better than Baumann - we have a new
:17:49. > :17:53.leader. APPLAUSE
:17:53. > :17:57.Benjamin Raich is officially now back. He's on the comeback from
:17:57. > :18:02.injury, but that run was truly superb. He's a big race skier, and
:18:02. > :18:08.he responds well to a crowd like this.
:18:08. > :18:12.Cyprien Richard surprised everyone last year with a surprising second
:18:12. > :18:16.run at Adelboden that catapulted him into first place. It was his
:18:16. > :18:24.first and ever win, though he did record a credible second at the
:18:24. > :18:32.World Championships in Garnish. Cyprien Richard from France, fifth
:18:32. > :18:36.after the first run, just after 2/10, from Ben Raich. He's still
:18:36. > :18:39.pushing where he can with the ski pulls against some of the early
:18:39. > :18:43.turns. The upper body is a little bit wild, but look at his speed
:18:43. > :18:48.across the snow. He really wants this one today. He's a little late
:18:48. > :18:55.there, and some of his speed was wiped out, and as a result, his
:18:55. > :19:04.lead is down to just 3 1/100 of a second. An early mistake from
:19:04. > :19:07.Cyprien Richard. Can he claw some of that back? It's a wild,
:19:07. > :19:12.unorthodox technique that he employs, and the early mistakes
:19:12. > :19:19.have caught up with him - almost half a second slower than Benjamin
:19:19. > :19:22.Raich, who, you may remember, was supremely quick on the bottom
:19:22. > :19:27.second. He may not finish. That's it. It's gone. He had to put the
:19:27. > :19:33.hand brake on and make sure of the last turn, and as a result, his
:19:33. > :19:38.chance has slipped away. There will be no defence of the giant slalom
:19:38. > :19:48.he won alongside Aksel Lund Svindal and Slindal a year ago. He'll be
:19:48. > :19:48.
:19:48. > :19:53.happy to finish after a catalogue of errors. Benjamin Raich's lead is
:19:53. > :19:58.secure. He's nearly a full second off the pace. That mistake, hooking
:19:58. > :20:02.his hand inside the gate, getting spun around, shoulders twisted out,
:20:02. > :20:11.has cost him the chance to win this race again. It's looking pretty
:20:11. > :20:14.strong for Raich though. Another Frenchman, Steve Missillier
:20:14. > :20:22.is next, a sensational first run from him, but what a way to start
:20:22. > :20:28.his second leg with a dreadful error - five gates in. He began
:20:28. > :20:33.with 4/10 advantage, he'll be well behind Bennie Raich at the next
:20:33. > :20:39.intermediate here after that dreadful error at the top. 6/10
:20:39. > :20:45.down. He has no chance now but to put his foot to the floor and try
:20:45. > :20:48.to close down some of the time he's lost, but it's a thankless task in
:20:48. > :20:58.deteriorating conditions. The visibility for him is just about as
:20:58. > :21:03.bad as it has been all afternoon. A second-and-a-half down now. There
:21:03. > :21:07.is an air of silence in the Finnish error as they watch him come down.
:21:07. > :21:11.Everybody saw the mistake he made at the top of the hill on the big
:21:11. > :21:16.screen. He'll get some sympathetic applause as he comes over the rise
:21:16. > :21:24.into the steep pitch, but it's a blown opportunity for Steve
:21:24. > :21:32.Messillier from France. Making sure of the finish now,
:21:32. > :21:39.Raich is happy. Raich remains in first position, and he's way down
:21:39. > :21:47.the list in sixth. This is where he blew his chance,
:21:47. > :21:52.got his skis sideways and had to come in like a beginning.
:21:52. > :21:58.Max Blardone is Italy's specialist racer. He won back in 2005 on his
:21:58. > :22:05.way to six GCS titles in his career. He started on home snow, but in
:22:05. > :22:11.recent years, he hasn't done too well outside of Italy.
:22:11. > :22:16.Max Blardone is in the start with an advantage over Bennie Raich of
:22:16. > :22:20.three-quarters of a second. Will that be enough? The winner of the
:22:20. > :22:24.most recent giant slalom on the Tuesday, round four, held just
:22:24. > :22:29.before the new year, his first win for awhile - he doesn't get that
:22:29. > :22:34.much of an opportunity to race because he only takes part in giant
:22:34. > :22:39.slalom competitions, and there are only about eight or nine each year,
:22:39. > :22:44.so outings for Max Blardone are few and far between. He's lost a couple
:22:44. > :22:48.of 10ths, then loses a load of speed. That was a huge mistake.
:22:48. > :22:55.That might just be the end of his challenge here in Switzerland, and
:22:55. > :22:58.the red light is on. He's 3/10 down. He, at times, can be very effective
:22:58. > :23:02.when it's particularly steep. Unfortunately for him, the steepest
:23:02. > :23:07.section of this course comes right at the end when he'll be on the
:23:07. > :23:13.edge of his stamina. It's beginning to show. Can he pull something out
:23:13. > :23:19.of the bag and try and recover the lost ground? .37 - it's going the
:23:19. > :23:24.wrong way for him. He's drifting further beyond the reach of Bennie
:23:24. > :23:29.Raich. Now, then, on to the steep, nice turns - he's gone a little bit
:23:29. > :23:37.left in the tank, and Blardone is leaving it all on the hill. Oh,
:23:37. > :23:39.what a fight-back, 2/100 of a second behind Bennie Raich. He's
:23:39. > :23:44.shattered. Max Blardone is absolutely superb
:23:44. > :23:48.on the steep sections of a giant slalom, and he proved it there,
:23:48. > :23:51.coming on to the finish pitch. The line that he took through that
:23:51. > :23:57.double gate turn was just absolutely perfect, and then he
:23:57. > :23:59.carried that speed all the way down the pitch and only just behind
:23:59. > :24:03.Benjamin Raich. If he hadn't made that mistake on the middle flat
:24:03. > :24:06.part of the course, he'd have taken the lead.
:24:06. > :24:11.Ted Ligety, the giant slalom specialist and world champion,
:24:11. > :24:15.should be the man to beat in Adelboden, having dominated GS in
:24:15. > :24:21.recent years, but this hill is his nemesis. He's never won here,
:24:21. > :24:28.blowing a big lead last year. His team will be hoping he can shred it
:24:28. > :24:31.up this time around. Ted Ligety - 1.04 seconds is his
:24:31. > :24:36.advantage over Benjamin Raich. Will that be enough to see him through
:24:36. > :24:42.to the lead in Adelboden? The snow that's falling is more like rain
:24:42. > :24:47.now, fine rain at the bottom of the course. Conditions aren't great,
:24:47. > :24:55.but Ligety is really flying at the top. A mistake just before that red.
:24:55. > :24:59.Some of his time has gone, but enough - .93 up. The leader in the
:24:59. > :25:06.World Cup giant slalom standings for this season with two wins - the
:25:06. > :25:10.opener in October and then on home snow in Colorado in Beaver creek.
:25:10. > :25:15.Those are the races in which he's triumphed so far, but this is
:25:15. > :25:20.beginning to move away from him - half a second down, and Ted Ligety
:25:20. > :25:28.has lost his rhythm. The racing line is way over to the right. He's
:25:28. > :25:36.off the ideal course, and I think Raich is safe - next split, 2.24.86
:25:36. > :25:41.for Raich, and Ted Ligety is now behind, 2 1,100 of a second down.
:25:41. > :25:50.The steep section - can he told it together? Ted Ligety with a lot of
:25:50. > :25:53.support. Goes or for the line, goes for the lead - just outside - 6
:25:53. > :25:57./100 outside. It's only good for third, which means the worst place
:25:57. > :26:03.Raich can finish is second. Ted Ligety, one mistake on that
:26:03. > :26:08.gate with the roller in it on the flatter part of the course comes
:26:08. > :26:13.across the line only 6/100 behind, but in third place, a massive grown
:26:13. > :26:16.from Ted Ligety, but he was pushing really hard, but just that one
:26:16. > :26:21.mistake cost him. Marcel Hirscher is the great young
:26:21. > :26:26.hope of the Austrian ski team and the man to watch the season. He's
:26:26. > :26:30.currently second in the GS standings and the overall leader.
:26:30. > :26:35.After ending his season last year with a broken ankle, he recovered
:26:36. > :26:39.in startling form with a GS and two slalom wins under his belt this
:26:39. > :26:45.season. The last man on the mountain is
:26:45. > :26:51.Marcel Hirscher, with more than a second advantage over Benjamin
:26:51. > :26:59.Raich. A couple of years ago he had posters of Benjamin Raich all over
:26:59. > :27:04.his wall. Now he's racing to beat him in Adelboden. He's just off the
:27:04. > :27:08.back of a slalom midweek in Zagreb that put him on the top of the
:27:08. > :27:12.overall standings - a good start, three-quarters of a second up on
:27:12. > :27:19.Raich, who leads Max Blardone, with Ted Ligety currently in third
:27:19. > :27:26.position. He's giving it everything - nice turn, .34 up. His advantage
:27:26. > :27:32.has been reduced again. Now, then, can he hold it together? Will it be
:27:32. > :27:36.the Austrian veteran, or will it be the youngster? Lovely turn through
:27:36. > :27:41.the middle of that panel - spectacular - then a mistake, and
:27:41. > :27:48.he had to recover. Some emergency manoeuvres being deployed by Marcel
:27:49. > :27:53.Hirscher to keep his challenge alive here in Adelboden. At the
:27:53. > :27:59.last intermediate, he was just 15/100 in front. Will that be
:27:59. > :28:04.enough? Raich can barely watch as he comes home to take the win in
:28:04. > :28:11.Adelboden by 8/100 of a second. He doesn't know yet. He hasn't seen it
:28:11. > :28:20.yet. He is asking the question. Is it me? Yes, it is! He's the winner
:28:20. > :28:29.here on the. They're calling him the new Benjamin Raich. The two of
:28:29. > :28:34.them can only be separated by 8/100 today.
:28:34. > :28:38.Marcel Hirscher said he came on to the slope with a really big skid.
:28:38. > :28:42.It looked like his legs were starting to give way, but he just
:28:42. > :28:46.had enough strength to hang on and carry that speed across the line.
:28:46. > :28:56.It's Austria, one and two. What a great race in Adelboden, and
:28:56. > :29:13.
:29:13. > :29:17.the victory goes to Marcel Hirscher would be Obi-Wan Kenobi. What is it
:29:17. > :29:22.like to be the master with someone so young and promising coming
:29:22. > :29:26.through? He's younger, but he's very strong, and he's much older in
:29:26. > :29:30.his mind than in his age. Yeah, I think he's really strong and the
:29:31. > :29:37.man of the future. I learned a lot from Bennie. He was always my
:29:37. > :29:43.biggest idol, so it's - it was pretty strange at the beginning
:29:43. > :29:47.when I came into the World Cup team sitting next to the big gladiator.
:29:47. > :29:51.You always look up to him, so sitting next to him is pretty
:29:51. > :29:57.strange, but it's a good, good thing, and I'm pretty proud to beat
:29:57. > :30:07.him today. He's a good guy. Sunday is on at the later time of
:30:07. > :30:13.
:30:13. > :30:21.Pritam's Shelley Bradman took bronze in the women's skeleton at
:30:21. > :30:29.the European Championships in Germany. Amy Williams finished 20th.
:30:29. > :30:34.Congratulations to Marcel Hirscher, a tight race, 0.1 seconds
:30:34. > :30:38.separating first and third. For the women, it is just as tight. Chemmy
:30:38. > :30:42.Alcott is not racing, she is still recovering from a horrendous
:30:42. > :30:45.accident sustained last year in training. She has been back on tour,
:30:46. > :30:51.catching up with the friends who have supported her through the
:30:51. > :30:56.toughest year of her life. 12 months on from my worst career
:30:56. > :31:01.crash ever, I am back in the mountains, and I am Super excited
:31:01. > :31:10.to be here amongst my friends are. But I am here to beat somebody who
:31:10. > :31:15.is really special to me, and was there through my journey. We have
:31:15. > :31:21.been on this journey together for over a decade. It is a lot over a
:31:21. > :31:26.decade! We first met in New Zealand, we were at the Golden girls. We
:31:26. > :31:31.were quite jealous of each other. thought, this British girl is the
:31:31. > :31:39.best, I need to beat her! I thought, this American kid, she is really
:31:39. > :31:48.hot, I want to beat her! Unbeknown to us, we were kissing the same boy.
:31:48. > :31:52.We have good taste! That is why we get along so well! We are really
:31:52. > :32:02.similar people, you have excelled in the World Cup, more than me, but
:32:02. > :32:12.
:32:12. > :32:18.I am still going to break through! Yes! I am here because I am getting
:32:18. > :32:22.my boot fitted four-minute lead, and I want to talk about my crash.
:32:22. > :32:28.When I crashed, you came to the hospital pretty much every day. I
:32:28. > :32:33.crashed on a hill you were racing on, so how did you change your mind
:32:33. > :32:36.set, no link that there was a term that I had fallen on? I am
:32:36. > :32:42.concerned for the well-being of my friend, but in general, it is
:32:42. > :32:51.mostly thinking about myself and being safe. The race goes on. You
:32:51. > :33:01.have to be able to calm -- compartmentalised. You are such an
:33:01. > :33:03.
:33:03. > :33:09.over-rich Shiva! -- over achiever! I had a tough childhood. I focused
:33:09. > :33:17.my energy on skiing. That is what I brought with me through the years.
:33:17. > :33:26.And also, this fearless attitude, I just wanted to go fast, to beat my
:33:26. > :33:33.older sister, I wanted to be fearless. When you won the Olympics,
:33:33. > :33:41.the weather was horrendous. You Skeet like it was perfect
:33:41. > :33:46.conditions. He did not stir the day before. -- it did not know the day
:33:46. > :33:50.before. Is that your best ever victory? The Olympics is the
:33:50. > :34:00.pinnacle, it was exciting also in Vancouver, to be on the podium.
:34:00. > :34:03.
:34:03. > :34:07.Twice. That was a lot of fun. went into the Olympics with not
:34:07. > :34:13.much confidence and evidence that you were going to be on the podium,
:34:13. > :34:17.but you turned it around. I had to be like, I know it is possible, and
:34:17. > :34:23.I have the training, so now it is about doing that and forgetting
:34:23. > :34:27.about everybody else. That is a big part of skiing, being clearly
:34:28. > :34:33.confident in yourself. It is not just self-confidence, believing in
:34:33. > :34:41.your own will, it is shutting out the negativity. Not letting
:34:41. > :34:45.anything affect how you feel. Being on the podium is amazing, but there
:34:45. > :34:51.is definitely a difference between being on the podium and winning. To
:34:51. > :34:57.win a race, everything has to be perfect. You have to think, I am
:34:57. > :35:04.going to win this race. You have to want to win. How will you win this
:35:04. > :35:09.year? It is tough, Linsey is skiing so fast. Winning a race is so
:35:09. > :35:14.different from being on a podium. She has won so many times, it
:35:14. > :35:20.becomes routine. When it becomes a habit, it is that much easier. She
:35:20. > :35:24.has a mental advantage by knowing what it takes to win. Look at this!
:35:24. > :35:30.You have officially made it, you have a dressing down with your name
:35:30. > :35:34.on it! It is weird, you can be such good friends with somebody to race
:35:34. > :35:41.against. It is like a family, we travelled the world, that is what
:35:41. > :35:51.keeps me doing the sport. It is tough to be away from home, but I
:35:51. > :35:56.
:35:56. > :36:00.love travelling. It is fun to have It is two years until the winter
:36:00. > :36:05.Olympics, and we wish Chemmy Alcott all the best, and we hope she can
:36:05. > :36:15.recover in time. There will be a new event, and us British are good
:36:15. > :36:16.
:36:16. > :36:20.at it. Could we be about to win our first ever gold medal on the snow?
:36:20. > :36:24.I look at her as they could influence and as a great stone
:36:24. > :36:32.border. She was one of the goals from the get go, hitting the big
:36:33. > :36:40.jumps. I like that. To stand out for as long -- he has is amazing.
:36:40. > :36:46.She has made me better at snowboarding. I grew up in Bristol.
:36:46. > :36:52.An average family. I did other sports, gymnastics, athletics,
:36:52. > :36:58.swimming, and I liked them, but this, the adrenalin rush, the speed,
:36:58. > :37:04.it was always so exciting. I said, how can I do this more? What
:37:04. > :37:08.decision did you come to? I thought, I have finished my A-levels, I
:37:08. > :37:14.applied for university, and I told my parents I would like to take a
:37:14. > :37:17.year out and be a chalet maid! I have worked in a small chalet, but
:37:17. > :37:23.after 20 guests, cooked breakfast every day, changed the beds, clean
:37:23. > :37:27.the toilets, and every day I went to the mountains and enjoyed
:37:27. > :37:31.snowboarding. I met professionals, they watched me, they said, you
:37:31. > :37:41.should come to the British championships, and I said, I do not
:37:41. > :37:46.know how to get there. I went along, and that was it. That was one of my
:37:46. > :37:56.first pick contexts -- contests. For the next two years, it was
:37:56. > :37:59.
:37:59. > :38:04.going smoothly, and I got invited to the next Games. -- X Games. I
:38:04. > :38:10.started to practise, and that is when things went wrong. I was
:38:10. > :38:20.training at, and I've had a huge crash, and I hurt my knee. I never
:38:20. > :38:20.
:38:20. > :38:29.got to compete. At that point, I was about to break into America,
:38:29. > :38:32.and it was cut short. Did you think it was over? No. The invitation
:38:32. > :38:39.list is doggedly the most prestigious in snowboarding. You
:38:39. > :38:44.made at 21, how long did it take to get back on the list? It was not
:38:44. > :38:49.for another four or five years. I thought, I will go back to that. I
:38:49. > :38:56.will get an invite, I will go. I did not care about what would
:38:56. > :39:03.happen, I just wanted to go again. It was funny, because I eventually
:39:03. > :39:10.got the invite. I was thinking, I will go next year. What happened
:39:10. > :39:14.with the first one? That was the best competitive moment of my life!
:39:14. > :39:24.I was in second place, I had one more run cannot afford, I have got
:39:24. > :39:33.nothing to lose. I looked up, I could see the gold,... I was such a
:39:33. > :39:37.loser, I started crying! Afford, no, I am the person who cries! You have
:39:37. > :39:45.sustained that level throughout. was happy to come back again and do
:39:45. > :39:51.well again. In Europe, that was amazing, because it was the resort
:39:51. > :39:57.that I had been a chalet maid at, 10 years ago! There were a few
:39:57. > :40:02.people around that time you. To get the gold medal, I am British, I am
:40:02. > :40:12.here, I might not have been through the conventional channels, but I am
:40:12. > :40:12.
:40:12. > :40:17.just as capable as the European girls. How did you feel when you
:40:17. > :40:24.found out this was going to be in the Olympics? I tried not to think
:40:24. > :40:29.about it until I got the official confirmation. I got the phone call,
:40:29. > :40:34.and I was excited! It is positive for snowboarding that it is in
:40:34. > :40:38.there. I cannot expect too much at this stage, because I am doing well
:40:38. > :40:44.right now, but I do not know where I will be then. I did love to
:40:44. > :40:49.represent my country, but if I am not at that level, it is OK. As
:40:49. > :40:55.long as I have tried. We would love to see Jenny Jones on
:40:55. > :41:00.the podium, but in your heart of hearts, can she do it? I am an
:41:00. > :41:05.optimist, and I will say yes. She is our most consistently successful
:41:05. > :41:09.winter sport athlete. If it does not workout, she is training kit
:41:09. > :41:16.with another really strong that talent, so if she does not make it,
:41:16. > :41:20.I think her colleague well. For the men, we have Jamie Nichols. A lot
:41:20. > :41:26.of people are calling him the best all-round competition snowboarder
:41:26. > :41:34.in the world. That is issued call, very exciting. Anybody else
:41:34. > :41:43.commensurate? Billy Morgan, he exploded onto the international
:41:43. > :41:50.scene in December. This is why. It is pretty scary! There are four
:41:50. > :41:55.or five other people doing triples. It is pretty cool to join them. It
:41:55. > :42:00.was claimed on a couple of websites that I was the first one to do it.
:42:00. > :42:06.I do not know if somebody has done it before. I looked on YouTube
:42:06. > :42:13.defined videos, but there are no snowboarders who have done it. I
:42:13. > :42:17.thought about it a couple of times, but I think about a lot of tricks.
:42:17. > :42:21.A lot of the time, you never think you will do them, because you never
:42:21. > :42:27.get the opportunity. I do trampolining, so why have done
:42:27. > :42:34.triple backlit -- I have done trouble back flips. I thought it
:42:34. > :42:41.was realistic. I had a good bunch of days, riding. I did some double
:42:41. > :42:51.radios. The jump was pick, I was going well. A Ford, today is the
:42:51. > :43:00.
:43:01. > :43:06.day. I just did it. -- I thought, I suppose I got more hits on that
:43:06. > :43:11.video in the last day than any other video I have put up. It is
:43:11. > :43:17.obviously being looked at, which is amazing. Getting this done and
:43:17. > :43:21.training properly will help me push towards the Winter Olympics. I did
:43:22. > :43:28.not think it was relisted until the last couple of weeks. I have been
:43:28. > :43:32.going well recently. That is it for this week. If you
:43:32. > :43:36.pressed the red button at the end of the show, you can watch
:43:36. > :43:45.highlights of the men's slalom from Adelboden. Also, you can keep in
:43:45. > :43:50.touch via the website, and follow us on Twitter. Next week, the
