:01:05. > :01:16.Once upon a time in Switzerland, there was a little town called

:01:17. > :01:23.Adelboden. The 362 days of the year, it is your typical mountain

:01:24. > :01:34.resort, small, scenic. Switzerland at its neutral best. But for one

:01:35. > :01:44.weekend in January, the World Cup wagon rolls into town. Every hotel

:01:45. > :01:49.and bar in town is packed to the rafters and it all starts here. On

:01:50. > :02:02.Friday night, they hold a party to welcome the racers. Music, drinking

:02:03. > :02:06.and dancing, zip wires. It transforms this place into a hotbed

:02:07. > :02:11.of excitement and pressure. Then it is the big show. The racers battle

:02:12. > :02:19.be mountain, conditions and the clock. It takes true grit to make it

:02:20. > :02:31.down the final pitch here. If you win, it makes you a legend. You will

:02:32. > :02:37.see some of the good, the bad and the ugly. Over the course of the

:02:38. > :02:43.show, some of the finest racing you will ever see. First up is the fifth

:02:44. > :02:49.giant slalom of the season. So far, it is to piste Marcel Hirscher and

:02:50. > :02:54.Ted Ligety. Who will win the next round of this stupendous battle of

:02:55. > :02:59.technical giants? And if you thought Adelboden was off the beaten track,

:03:00. > :03:05.let me introduce you to the man who built his own private ski resort.

:03:06. > :03:11.From serenity to insanity, we catch up with Emily Sarsfield, the leading

:03:12. > :03:19.British contender going into the Winter Olympics in Sochi. This might

:03:20. > :03:24.be a one horse town in the Swiss wild West, but there is a new

:03:25. > :03:31.gunslinger in Adelboden. Marcel Hirscher last season retain his

:03:32. > :03:34.World Cup title. He joined the likes of Stephan Ebeharter and Hemann

:03:35. > :03:39.Maier as multiple Austrian winners. He is on the form of his life. We

:03:40. > :03:47.went to catch up with arguably the best skier on the planet right now.

:03:48. > :03:52.In German, it means stag, his surname. For Austrian ski fans, it

:03:53. > :04:02.means success. The reigning overall World Cup champion has been used to

:04:03. > :04:06.people chanting his name. I had the pressure all the time on my

:04:07. > :04:13.shoulders. Already with five to six years old. I grew up, the cloud is

:04:14. > :04:21.getting bigger -- the crowd. I get older and older. I have a lot of

:04:22. > :04:25.experience. For me it is pretty normal to have a lot of pressure on

:04:26. > :04:28.my shoulders. If I have a goal I want to reach the goal. I stay

:04:29. > :04:36.pretty focused all of the time. Maybe I am more a racehorse than a

:04:37. > :04:41.training course. Of the piste, I am pretty quiet. Would you say the are

:04:42. > :04:47.-- you are the most famous sportsman in Austria right now? I don't know.

:04:48. > :04:54.Do you know? I am not Austrian but it has got to be between you and

:04:55. > :04:58.some of the ski jumpers. The athletes right now who are

:04:59. > :05:07.competing, I am definitely from one to three. It is hard and Austria to

:05:08. > :05:14.get the most famous athlete because we have many famous retired skiers.

:05:15. > :05:18.We will see how many victories I can collect in the next years. The

:05:19. > :05:23.records in Austria are pretty high. This course in Adelboden is quite

:05:24. > :05:28.challenging, isn't it? It is definitely a very special place to

:05:29. > :05:35.be. It is really brilliant. You ski over the pitch in the steep part.

:05:36. > :05:43.All of the people are chairing. -- cheering. What makes him so good?

:05:44. > :05:47.I first watched Marcel Hirscher ski when he was 14 and he was creating

:05:48. > :05:52.incredible angles with his lower legs. World Cup ski racers were not

:05:53. > :05:57.doing it at that time. Now he has taken the geometry and he has got

:05:58. > :06:02.the power to deal with it as he has grown. If he has that talented, why

:06:03. > :06:08.isn't he beating Ted Ligety? Ted Ligety tends to use his hip much

:06:09. > :06:16.more. When the courses are longer set, big sisters is between the

:06:17. > :06:22.gates, Ted Ligety will beat him. Who else is coming through? The

:06:23. > :06:25.gates, Ted Ligety will beat him. Who will pack the top ten led by Alexis

:06:26. > :06:32.Pinturault. A couple of Germans did so well in Val d'Isere. Last but

:06:33. > :06:36.maybe least, what about the Swiss? Unless we see a miracle, I cannot

:06:37. > :06:43.maybe least, what about the Swiss? see them being on the podium on home

:06:44. > :06:46.snow. The sun is blazing down and it is

:06:47. > :06:51.warming up this course. The fans are out in force and the atmosphere is

:06:52. > :06:53.heating up. This is the Adelboden giant slalom. Matt Chilton has the

:06:54. > :07:04.commentary. It is a beautiful springlike day. A

:07:05. > :07:15.relaxed at the Ted Ligety. Marcel Hirscher flexes his muscles at the

:07:16. > :07:19.top of the course. Thomas Fanara first to go in Adelboden. On a day

:07:20. > :07:23.like today when the snow is so soft, that could be a serious advantage

:07:24. > :07:27.because this track despite the work they have done on it, injecting the

:07:28. > :07:31.water with the help of the Swiss military, and applying the various

:07:32. > :07:36.chemicals, it will cut up quite quickly. Thomas Fanara is in full

:07:37. > :07:45.attack mode here. Comes onto the flat, bright sunshine. What a

:07:46. > :07:50.beautiful morning it is. Thomas without any mistakes so far. Second

:07:51. > :07:56.in Val d'Isere. A really good start to the season. The French team have

:07:57. > :08:00.so much talent within the giant slalom set up. A lot of competition

:08:01. > :08:06.for Olympic places for the French team when it comes to selection.

:08:07. > :08:09.That is midway through January. Thomas Fanara with a clean course,

:08:10. > :08:15.making the most of it. The toughest part of the track is still to come.

:08:16. > :08:20.This legendary final pitch, it sends them down the steep mountainside

:08:21. > :08:27.towards the finish. This cauldron of an atmosphere. Thousands of mainly

:08:28. > :08:33.Swiss fans waving their flags. There are a few French here too and they

:08:34. > :08:38.will be happy with what they have seen from Thomas Fanara. It looked a

:08:39. > :08:41.bit scrappy, particularly coming down the finished pitch. You could

:08:42. > :08:47.see his outside ski being pulled away. But there are deep cuts

:08:48. > :08:52.already because it is very warm here in Adelboden. As it warms up, the

:08:53. > :08:55.course will chop up. I think by that reckoning, number one would have

:08:56. > :08:59.been the best number to start. Could it be Ted Ligety's crown is

:09:00. > :09:05.slipping? The one to mince an American has hit

:09:06. > :09:11.a sticky. Crashing out for the first time in Val d'Isere -- the once

:09:12. > :09:14.invincible American. He will look for inspiration from memories of

:09:15. > :09:20.last season's win here. Ted Ligety ready to go.

:09:21. > :09:26.Two giant slalom races this season. Ted Ligety has had two, Marcel

:09:27. > :09:31.Hirscher has two. They have shared the honours so far. It has not been

:09:32. > :09:36.his best season. Ted Ligety have had a couple of failures to finish. One

:09:37. > :09:43.or two crashes as well. Chasing the time of Thomas Fanara, 19.43. Thomas

:09:44. > :09:48.validity getting outside of the ideal racing line. Lost his way

:09:49. > :09:56.slightly there -- Thomas validity getting outside. The red line across

:09:57. > :10:02.the course shows you the intermediaries point. He is

:10:03. > :10:08.trailing. Lots of noise. They like to watch Ted Ligety race. All of

:10:09. > :10:13.these Swiss supporters are big fans of Ted Ligety and of course Bode

:10:14. > :10:20.Miller. They have not got too many of their own racers today. They will

:10:21. > :10:23.look to support other nations. Ted Ligety heading in the wrong

:10:24. > :10:29.direction behind Thomas Fanara. Onto the final pitch. Got his body almost

:10:30. > :10:35.horizontal on the snow. He will be happy to be starting early. The snow

:10:36. > :10:47.is ridiculously soft underfoot. Ted Ligety has done OK. Second position.

:10:48. > :10:51.But Ron did not look like that macro that run did not look like he was

:10:52. > :10:55.getting the same pressure -- that run did not look like he was getting

:10:56. > :10:59.the same pressure. He was forcing it to much. He has not got the timing,

:11:00. > :11:09.not the same smooth skiing as last season.

:11:10. > :11:19.Marcel Hirscher in the start gate. He wears the red bib. He loves it

:11:20. > :11:27.here. He has won here in -- a number of times. He is hoping to beat the

:11:28. > :11:35.record of five World Cup wins in Adelboden. Marcel Hirscher starting

:11:36. > :11:42.with bib number four and already the courses cutting up quite

:11:43. > :11:53.dramatically. Big ruts forming. It will be really tough for the later

:11:54. > :11:58.starters. Marcel Hirscher the first man to do the giant slalom double

:11:59. > :12:03.here in Adelboden a couple of years ago. He really does like this

:12:04. > :12:08.course. Benjamin Raich, another one who had multiple wins in Adelboden.

:12:09. > :12:15.He is also in the start list today. Marcel Hirscher finds himself 0.75

:12:16. > :12:18.off the pace. The big steep face to finish his first run. Lots of

:12:19. > :12:24.Austrian supporters here. Their support is being drowned out by the

:12:25. > :12:32.thousands of Swiss. Marcel Hirscher has had a good run but not enough to

:12:33. > :12:37.beat Thomas Fanara. That run is starting to look very

:12:38. > :12:41.good, the run from Thomas Fanara. Marcel Hirscher attacking too much a

:12:42. > :12:47.couple of times. Had to have a couple of heavy sets to get back on

:12:48. > :12:52.track. Close to Ted Ligety. Thomas Fanara's time is looking good.

:12:53. > :13:01.Benefiting from going number one. Alexis Pinturault's parents only

:13:02. > :13:05.hotel and he grew up with the snow on his doorstep. The French have a

:13:06. > :13:10.strong team but he need not worry about switching nationalities to get

:13:11. > :13:15.a start spot. He is the leader of the French pack.

:13:16. > :13:21.He might just have had enough time to talk or at least listen to it

:13:22. > :13:27.Thomas Fanara via the two-way radios. Thomas Fanara has been at

:13:28. > :13:31.the bottom of the course for a little while now. I wonder how much

:13:32. > :13:37.information the leader will give to one of the later starters. They may

:13:38. > :13:46.beat compatriots but team-mates can be used loosely in such a situation

:13:47. > :13:54.because it is an individual sport. Nothing wrong with these first few

:13:55. > :13:58.turns. He had quite a heavy landing. He did not seem to lose too much

:13:59. > :14:10.speed. The hard work is coming his way shortly.

:14:11. > :14:28.He is keeping in touch with Fanara. The approaches the finish. It bares

:14:29. > :14:31.its teeth here. He might leave himself a lot to do going into the

:14:32. > :14:39.second run. He takes second position. Friends first and second.

:14:40. > :14:44.It is looking good for the French fans, I was talking to Thomas

:14:45. > :14:50.Fanara, he said his fan club left France at 4am. There is a big group

:14:51. > :14:55.of them based up there, by the big screen. France are in first and

:14:56. > :14:58.second, they will be happy for the second run.

:14:59. > :15:11.For the Germans, results were mixed. Sixth place and 10th place. Five

:15:12. > :15:18.Italians made the top 30. The best place was in fifth place. The top

:15:19. > :15:24.Swiss racer was in 26th position. Miller had a bad day. A narrow

:15:25. > :15:36.collision here, --. Is it the way the French have set up

:15:37. > :15:39.their skis? It is where they have been to train, they have found

:15:40. > :15:45.somewhere that replicates this soft snow that we have here. Are they too

:15:46. > :15:52.far ahead for Ted Ligety to reel in? The big names have got a chance

:15:53. > :15:56.to catch the man in second place, but two, he is an awful way ahead.

:15:57. > :16:01.But he has never been at the top of a World Cup podium, he will never

:16:02. > :16:08.have a better chance. The pressure will be huge. The ship of glory will

:16:09. > :16:16.be about to sail, will Thomas Fanara be on it?

:16:17. > :16:27.An impressive season to date for the Norwegian, improving results. He was

:16:28. > :16:34.14th in the first run, he has a decent lead here. This bottom part

:16:35. > :16:39.of the course on a fresh pattern of gates that has been set for the

:16:40. > :16:52.second run. It is quite inviting. It allows the racers to move into full

:16:53. > :16:59.attack mode. Plenty of speed. He is ahead of the Italian. He tries to

:17:00. > :17:05.accelerate the skis through these terms. This is nice work. He has had

:17:06. > :17:09.the green light on all the way, and he takes first race in Adelboden. An

:17:10. > :17:18.excellent run. A great run, really exciting to

:17:19. > :17:24.watch, great angles, he does ski a very clean line. He picked up a lot

:17:25. > :17:29.of time in the middle part of the course over those rollers. Sucking

:17:30. > :17:32.them up with his legs and keeping the ski in contact with the snow,

:17:33. > :17:48.accelerating out of each turn. The German was seventh after the

:17:49. > :17:52.first run. Laying down some fast terms in the early stages. His

:17:53. > :18:07.advantage over the Norwegian is substantial. He is getting quicker.

:18:08. > :18:17.No German has ever won here. The last German to win a World Cup giant

:18:18. > :18:22.slalom was back in 1973. This skier has never won a World Cup giant

:18:23. > :18:26.slalom. He has been one of the best slalom skiers of the last three or

:18:27. > :18:29.four years, but his form here has really started to move on a notch

:18:30. > :18:38.this season. This looks really promising. Really fast, aggressive,

:18:39. > :18:47.easy, relaxed terms. He has flown through the top part of the course.

:18:48. > :18:50.Now, he hits the state it. He recovered his racing line. He picks

:18:51. > :18:56.it up again. He is light on his edges. He takes it away. A massive

:18:57. > :19:07.margin. Brilliant. Beautiful skiing, really smooth and

:19:08. > :19:14.relaxed. That is the best I have ever seen him in giant slalom. He

:19:15. > :19:16.dealt -- he beat Marcel Hirscher in slalom a week ago, and he has thrown

:19:17. > :19:32.down the gauntlet. The Italian was fifth after the

:19:33. > :19:38.first run. The lead is not a lot. Deteriorating conditions, it is dark

:19:39. > :19:45.appear now. The sunshine will aid visibility. He is trying to feel his

:19:46. > :19:50.way over the lumps and bumps. You can see how warm it has been, with

:19:51. > :20:00.the green fields on the opposite side of the valley. He is now

:20:01. > :20:04.behind, not a good top section. He finds himself on the flats, this is

:20:05. > :20:07.where he should be sharper. But again, he looks slightly

:20:08. > :20:22.conservative. He takes the role nicely. He absorbs

:20:23. > :20:31.it, and dissipates it, and sets up for the big finish in Adelboden. But

:20:32. > :20:36.I think his chance has slipped away. He just had to lean his body through

:20:37. > :20:44.and make sure of the turn. The damage was already done. The German

:20:45. > :20:54.maintains his lead. The Italian his third, quite a gap between first and

:20:55. > :20:58.third. Marcel Hirscher, in fourth place after the first run. The World

:20:59. > :21:12.Cup leader in giant slalom this season. He is off on a charge. Not

:21:13. > :21:17.the cleanest top section I have ever seen from him, but he is starting to

:21:18. > :21:23.go to work now, getting his polls wrapped around his body for a split

:21:24. > :21:29.second. He is attempting to get more aerodynamic, to pick up a fraction

:21:30. > :21:37.more speed. Most of his advantage has been wiped out. He comes into

:21:38. > :21:45.the sunny side of the course. Still clinging on. Emergency terms. There

:21:46. > :21:50.is no one better at recovering a racing line following a mistake. He

:21:51. > :21:55.can make huge mistakes and still go on and win races. But I think it

:21:56. > :22:04.might have been an error to far today for him. He is slower than the

:22:05. > :22:12.German. For the first time in the second run. The impossibly steep run

:22:13. > :22:17.into the line. He is hanging on for every turn. Trying to generate an

:22:18. > :22:20.extra bit of speed. It is not enough. He is in second place, the

:22:21. > :22:29.German holds onto first base. A fantastic display of aggressive

:22:30. > :22:35.skiing, but it was almost too aggressive. The German was smooth

:22:36. > :22:44.and relaxed, like a cat, but Marcel Hirscher was like a bowl in a china

:22:45. > :22:45.shop, lots of tiny mistakes. Even skiing the finish cleanly, it was

:22:46. > :22:55.not enough. Ted Ligety, the world giant slalom

:22:56. > :23:00.champion. On his way for the second time of asking today in Adelboden.

:23:01. > :23:06.In third place after the first run. The best giant slalom skier of the

:23:07. > :23:12.last four or five seasons. He gets beautiful angles, he is always a joy

:23:13. > :23:19.to watch, and he is attacking the second run. His lead is still

:23:20. > :23:26.intact. He is in trouble, he has lost a ski! His race is done. It

:23:27. > :23:30.looks like he is OK. He hugged a tip inside the control gate.

:23:31. > :23:37.He can count himself lucky he walked away from that without any injury.

:23:38. > :23:43.Hooking a giant slalom gate can be quite dangerous. He is lucky the

:23:44. > :23:47.binding just popped off, but his season is taking a downward spiral.

:23:48. > :23:56.The Frenchman with a big lead over the German. He was still pushing

:23:57. > :24:04.with his polls as he reached the third gate. A sign that he is really

:24:05. > :24:09.up for the second run. He is doing really well, but he still has a lot

:24:10. > :24:13.to learn. He admits he is not the finished article just yet. There are

:24:14. > :24:19.one or two points of this course that he has to get right. The role

:24:20. > :24:28.has been handled well by some. Less well by others. Ted Ligety did not

:24:29. > :24:38.get that far. Up and over. He has lost his lead. A little late there.

:24:39. > :24:44.Down into the darkness. The sunny finish belies the ferocious mess of

:24:45. > :24:55.this run into the line. It is terrifyingly speak. The deficit has

:24:56. > :25:03.grown. He is in trouble. He leaned into the gate to make it count, but

:25:04. > :25:07.his skiing has deteriorated, he has lost his composure, he is late on

:25:08. > :25:13.every turn, and no danger to the German, who holds on.

:25:14. > :25:20.He did not look incredibly balanced as he went at the start. The first

:25:21. > :25:24.section is where the German was incredibly fast. The other mistake

:25:25. > :25:28.that he made, coming onto the finished pitch, the big

:25:29. > :25:32.right-hander, he had to set the tone twice, because he did not get the

:25:33. > :25:35.direction quite right. This will put the pressure on his team-mate, temp

:25:36. > :25:48.Acra, now, the last one due to ski. Thomas Fanara, skiing for his first

:25:49. > :25:52.ever World Cup win. The last man on the mountain in Adelboden. The

:25:53. > :26:00.likeable Frenchman. His lead over the German is significant. Almost

:26:01. > :26:08.1.5 seconds. Can he hold his composure, hold his nerve and make

:26:09. > :26:17.it count? A positive start, but a lack of balance. He was shaky. The

:26:18. > :26:25.lead has reduced. It might be even less by the time he stopped the

:26:26. > :26:31.clock again. He still has enough in reserve to steal the lead away. But

:26:32. > :26:37.he cannot afford any mistakes. It was on the bottom third that the

:26:38. > :26:48.German was at his brilliant best. This is at times a little scruffy by

:26:49. > :26:57.Thomas Fanara. He is clinging on. It has to be fast here. He looks a

:26:58. > :27:01.little tense and tight. The terms are late, I do not think it will

:27:02. > :27:06.happen for him. I think it will be the German's victory. It is. The

:27:07. > :27:09.German wins his first World Cup giant slalom, he becomes the first

:27:10. > :27:20.German man ever to win here. When he set off, I thought he was

:27:21. > :27:24.going to do it, he looked so relaxed on the top part of the course,

:27:25. > :27:31.soaking up the bumps, and the first mistake came over the little

:27:32. > :27:35.rollers. He got pushed later, wide in the line. He still had a chance,

:27:36. > :27:38.but as he went on to the finished pitch, the second of the

:27:39. > :27:42.right-handers, his shoulders twisted out, the skis skidded, and we knew

:27:43. > :27:52.he was not going to beat the German. The German becomes the first German

:27:53. > :27:57.winner of a World Cup giant slalom since the early 70s. Second place

:27:58. > :28:05.again for Thomas Fanara. Marcel Hirscher on the podium.

:28:06. > :28:18.First giant slalom victory for Germany in 40 years. It is crazy.

:28:19. > :28:22.Unbelievable. Today is a historic day. Maybe I relied it a bit later,

:28:23. > :28:31.but until right now, my feeling is really good. -- maybe I realised.

:28:32. > :28:41.How did Felix Neureuther make up so much ground? He loves it when it is

:28:42. > :28:47.bumpy. Why did Ted Ligety not do so well? Ted Ligety likes it when it is

:28:48. > :28:51.hard so he can get the hip in and generate the big angles. You called

:28:52. > :28:56.it and said Thomas Fanara would crack under pressure. When he

:28:57. > :29:00.started, I thought he would do it. He was relaxed but then made a

:29:01. > :29:08.couple of mistakes. He ran out and the lead went away. Disappointment

:29:09. > :29:13.for Thomas Fanara. That was the news from Adelboden. This is what is

:29:14. > :29:19.going on in the rest of the world of sport. Lindsey Vonn return to action

:29:20. > :29:23.after ten months out, but after failing to finish at Val d'Isere,

:29:24. > :29:27.she announced she would not be competing in Russia. Trouble too for

:29:28. > :29:34.Tommy Morgenstern, the three-time Olympic gold medallist suffered

:29:35. > :29:40.severe injuries after a training crash. He will remain in intensive

:29:41. > :29:49.care that 72 hours. Sochi preparations are much smoother fur

:29:50. > :29:56.Lizzie Yarnold. Along with Shelley Rudman, she was in action on Friday

:29:57. > :30:00.at the latest World Cup event in St Moritz. If you want to know how they

:30:01. > :30:06.get on, press the red button in about half an hour from now.

:30:07. > :30:17.Here on Ski Sunday, we pride ourselves on bringing you some

:30:18. > :30:24.unusual stories. Mike Basich in the pursuit of his dream, moved hundreds

:30:25. > :30:33.of tonnes of rock by hand. That is pathetic. Mike's efforts are

:30:34. > :30:42.anything but. And there it is. Look at the track.

:30:43. > :30:52.How are you going? Good. We will head up the road here and see what's

:30:53. > :31:01.know we have got to deal with. We might need the snowmobile. OK. A

:31:02. > :31:13.little bit of a journey. I am excited.

:31:14. > :31:24.This is it. Pretty wicked view. I am pretty speechless. I expect going --

:31:25. > :31:29.I was expecting it to be good, but this is as close to Alpine paradise

:31:30. > :31:38.as you can get. Where would the snow pack be in winter? On an average

:31:39. > :31:43.winter, about this high, 15 feet, 20 foot, five metres, six metres. Two

:31:44. > :31:48.years ago, the whole house was buried. Completely buried. It was a

:31:49. > :31:56.really bizarre experience. I came back from eight trip and I walked up

:31:57. > :32:04.the hill and the house was gone. It was amazing. You never know what

:32:05. > :32:10.will happen up here. You have got to be ready for whatever. Snowboarding

:32:11. > :32:12.is his passion and after turning his back on competitive riding, he

:32:13. > :32:21.headed with the back country with a sled and eight truck. He bought 40

:32:22. > :32:28.acres of land and built this cabin. I started snowboarding when I was

:32:29. > :32:31.13. You went to the resort and you would not see a snowboarder. If he

:32:32. > :32:35.did, you would go and talk to them and see what kind of bored they were

:32:36. > :32:43.wrong. Keyboards we started on wormwood, it was exciting. -- they

:32:44. > :32:49.wormwood. I did not fit in with the football all basket team. This was

:32:50. > :32:58.perfect. It stuck out. Would you class yourself as the stereotypical

:32:59. > :33:02.snowboard rat? I was the youngest in that group. It was a pretty fun

:33:03. > :33:10.group. We were, you could say, loud. Not welcome most places. Over

:33:11. > :33:16.time, it became, this is not going to go away. Certified to go on this

:33:17. > :33:21.list. The biggest problem is the visual, how everyone looked.

:33:22. > :33:26.Everyone was so used to be certain tradition that skiing has always

:33:27. > :33:45.had. There was not a lot of room for something different. Shaved heads,

:33:46. > :33:58.died her. -- dyed hair. Wow. Warm in here. It must have been

:33:59. > :34:08.incredible watching that much power. It is pretty fun. I cannot

:34:09. > :34:15.get my head around it. The dream scenario. I have learnt a lot about

:34:16. > :34:22.what I need to live. I have lived in a big house, I have lived in my car

:34:23. > :34:29.for a couple of years. I spend most of my time outside in the daytime.

:34:30. > :34:35.This is what I think I need. It is one of the best picture frames you

:34:36. > :34:40.could ever built. For me, it is. It is what I dream dog as a kid. At the

:34:41. > :34:47.same time, what this place has given me, I am trying to work with that --

:34:48. > :34:55.it is what I dreamt of as a kid. I started competing when I was 15 and

:34:56. > :34:59.I quit competing around 2000. On the international circuit, how many

:35:00. > :35:02.competitions did you do? More than my body can handle. Some of the

:35:03. > :35:11.biggest years, I went to Europe 15 times, Japan, four, five times. All

:35:12. > :35:16.in 12 months. Nonstop. Was it a case of burn-out at the end

:35:17. > :35:20.of it? Getting away from competition came from realising the sport was

:35:21. > :35:26.getting more and more structure and realising why I got into this and

:35:27. > :35:34.kept it in my life, what it was for, the creativity of it. I really

:35:35. > :35:38.think that in a weird way I snowboard, not exactly for the

:35:39. > :35:45.sport, but I snowboard for what it brings around it. The environment?

:35:46. > :35:50.Yeah, the ability to get creative and do something that has not been

:35:51. > :35:58.done before. Competition took a lot of that away from me. As it got

:35:59. > :36:01.bigger and bigger. Mike was at the forefront of self shooting

:36:02. > :36:06.technology and heap pioneered ways to shoot without a crew, in the

:36:07. > :36:12.process pushing the boundaries of what could be done with a camera. No

:36:13. > :36:20.photographer would let me jump with a $4000 camera. The money part of

:36:21. > :36:24.life, for me, is there a -- if there is going to do, the money part will

:36:25. > :36:33.figure itself out. I spent thousands of dollars on the setup. I spent

:36:34. > :36:40.money to fire the camera and figure out how to make things work. I did a

:36:41. > :36:43.lot of welding to mount the tripod and the camera. It was a space that

:36:44. > :36:49.no one was willing to jump road gaps with a camera... I have destroyed

:36:50. > :36:55.cameras. It took a few years for people to realise that it was a

:36:56. > :37:00.legitimate thing. It was not a gimmick. Yeah. Some of my photos

:37:01. > :37:09.were little odd. The helicopter drop thing I did was not exactly welcome

:37:10. > :37:16.as snowboarding, it was viewed as a publicity stunt. A lot of that

:37:17. > :37:26.changed my way of speaking about it. All the work I started doing was

:37:27. > :37:32.very personal. I feel what I'm doing now is the first day -- is what I

:37:33. > :37:40.did the first day I started snowboarding. It has not been easy.

:37:41. > :37:44.It has been huge struggle. Not having sponsors. I was fine with

:37:45. > :37:54.that because I was willing to let it go. Ice -- I suppose it was about

:37:55. > :37:58.being true to you. I try to stay on my true path. Not being influenced

:37:59. > :38:12.by what the world thinks I'm supposed to do. This is my version

:38:13. > :38:19.of a lift. I thought the house was good! What did you buy customer did

:38:20. > :38:28.you buy these frames? -- what did you buy? Anything red is

:38:29. > :38:33.custom-made. The gearbox and the wheels, the towers, that came with

:38:34. > :38:40.it and the chair I am holding. Some things I have built. Even the

:38:41. > :38:45.gripping of the cable is something I built because I am using a different

:38:46. > :38:54.type of cable. That was some of the stuff I got her engineer myself. It

:38:55. > :39:00.is a one seat. There it is. Off we go. The first time I rode it was so

:39:01. > :39:07.tense. Amazing. Riding a chairlift in my

:39:08. > :39:33.backyard. But no resort is complete without

:39:34. > :39:49.this. This is the crowning touch, isn't

:39:50. > :39:56.it? This is my favourite toy. Once I got this, my whole life changed.

:39:57. > :40:00.Never touched a shovel since. You obviously need a certain amount of

:40:01. > :40:09.snow to use it. It must have changed the way you view the hill.

:40:10. > :40:13.Everything else was with a snowmobile. I can build a welder

:40:14. > :40:20.Rupp with this. If I have something to fix. I can cut a road with this.

:40:21. > :40:27.It is one of the most spectacular playgrounds I have ever seen.

:40:28. > :40:32.Thanks. Thank you for having us. One of the most inspiring and

:40:33. > :40:42.determined people I have ever met. Now it is time to take a look at our

:40:43. > :40:47.free style skiers. Also looking to impress is a 30-year-old from Durham

:40:48. > :40:54.who likes to live life in the fast lane.

:40:55. > :41:04.Emily Sarsfield, British ski cross. Ski cross is the ultimate downhill

:41:05. > :41:09.race. You have got the Alpine aspect cos you have got the downhill

:41:10. > :41:14.racing. Then you have the freestyle aspect because of the jumps. You are

:41:15. > :41:17.racing head-to-head so everyone can see who will win the race. They

:41:18. > :41:24.start at the top together and the first one to cross the finish

:41:25. > :41:28.line... It is so exciting. It is a scary event. I am not going to live.

:41:29. > :41:35.I stand at the top of the course and I am scared to go down. Jumping 30

:41:36. > :41:39.metres, 40 metres. Added into the mix, you have got someone trying to

:41:40. > :41:44.knock you out of the way! The Sochi course, when we did the test event

:41:45. > :41:49.last year, it was a great course. I loved it. It has got some huge

:41:50. > :41:53.jumps. The big thing is that you know you have got to be calm to keep

:41:54. > :41:58.yourself in the safest position. If you go down hard, you really do help

:41:59. > :42:08.yourself -- hurt yourself. Getting to Sochi is the ultimate thing. That

:42:09. > :42:11.means so much to me. Best of luck to Emily and the rest of Team GB as

:42:12. > :42:16.they make their final preparations for the Winter Games. The first

:42:17. > :42:20.programme from Sochi comes to you on the 7th of February. The BBC will

:42:21. > :42:26.have over 200 hours of coverage across the games on all of your

:42:27. > :42:33.devices. I am the dreadful menace, the one whose will is done, the

:42:34. > :42:41.haunting chill upon your neck, I am the conundrum. But now you stand

:42:42. > :42:55.before me, to void of all this may. -- to avoid. Could it be just maybe

:42:56. > :42:59.I will let you have your day? As you can see -- you can see the full

:43:00. > :43:06.trailer before Sherlock on BBC One tonight. I am officially excited.

:43:07. > :43:11.Peaking just in time for the Olympics is Felix Neureuther.

:43:12. > :43:21.Congratulations to him for his first ever win in Adelboden today. Plenty

:43:22. > :43:26.more action on Ski Sunday extra. You can watch the full coverage of

:43:27. > :43:33.the women's downhill on the iPlayer. It is a cracker. And you can watch

:43:34. > :43:39.the men's slalom on midday on all platforms. Then the main course, Ski

:43:40. > :43:46.Sunday next week from Wengen. The Lauberhorn is the most physically

:43:47. > :43:50.demanding there is. Are they going to stand up to another two and a

:43:51. > :43:54.half minutes of punishment? It would be more like three minutes for me

:43:55. > :43:58.with a camera and I do not really know.

:43:59. > :44:06.Tune in next week to find out. Really rough and bumpy. Can't really

:44:07. > :44:09.see anything at all. It is just like a vertical skating rink. My legs are

:44:10. > :44:13.really starting to burn. Hard on the left ski. And across the line! That

:44:14. > :44:15.is quite a rush.
