:00:56. > :01:02.Hello and welcome to Ski Sunday. We are in Austria for the men's
:01:02. > :01:12.downhill from Kitzbuehel. The entire racing world is buzzing
:01:12. > :01:13.
:01:13. > :01:21.after a seminal moment last week, it was Johan Clarey who broke the
:01:21. > :01:27.100 mph barrier. This man is obsessed with speed, constantly
:01:27. > :01:33.striving to go faster and faster. We have invented, engineered and
:01:33. > :01:40.manufactured speed machines. Nothing captivates quite like
:01:40. > :01:46.natural Velocity, especially in the heat of battle. In the race...
:01:46. > :01:56.speed on the gun is more than 100 mph, a new record. Man's need for
:01:56. > :01:58.
:01:58. > :02:08.speed continues, where the faster you go the harder you fall. The 100
:02:08. > :02:09.
:02:10. > :02:16.mph club has a new member, and the race is on to join him. That race
:02:16. > :02:19.will go down in history, never mind that it was won by Christophe
:02:19. > :02:27.Innerhofer, it was Johan Clarey who will be remembered for that
:02:27. > :02:32.extraordinary speed record. I wonder how long it will last. Later
:02:32. > :02:38.on I will be meeting Tom Burt, who has elevated the sport to new
:02:38. > :02:43.heights. First it is the men's downhill. Victory here is the
:02:43. > :02:47.ultimate prize for the racers. For one weekend every year the biggest
:02:47. > :02:55.superpowers in skiing gather to contest the greatest title in their
:02:55. > :03:05.sport. For the host of this adrenaline first, the win is long
:03:05. > :03:10.
:03:10. > :03:20.overdue. The strife, of course carved out of Austrian rock. A
:03:20. > :03:21.
:03:21. > :03:25.police ruled by Bass. systematic stuff from Hermann Maier.
:03:25. > :03:31.This was once a symbol of Austrian skiing supremacy, but in recent
:03:31. > :03:41.years the home nation has lost its stranglehold on the strife. Over
:03:41. > :03:41.
:03:41. > :03:51.the last five years, Kitzbuehel has won -- has surrendered to the Swiss
:03:51. > :03:51.
:03:51. > :03:59.reigniting an age-old conflict. was skiing in the 1960s, and to
:03:59. > :04:07.beat the Swiss skier, it is always funny. Her how much does it mean to
:04:07. > :04:12.have that victory? In it means a lot, it is Austria, the concurrence
:04:12. > :04:18.between Switzerland and Austria so it is a fantastic race. To rub salt
:04:18. > :04:24.even deeper into the Austrian wound, Didier Cuche surpassed the record
:04:24. > :04:31.last year securing a staggering fifth victory. Didier Cuche leads
:04:31. > :04:41.the way, the record has gone. means a lot, the name Franz Klammer,
:04:41. > :04:41.
:04:41. > :04:48.and I was proud to equal his record. Passing him was just amazing.
:04:48. > :04:53.Didier Cuche, now retired, will end his own reign and there seems to be
:04:53. > :04:58.no serious Swiss successor much to the relief of the Kitzbuehel crowd.
:04:58. > :05:03.Swiss domination has been hard to stomach for the home fans. They
:05:03. > :05:13.have enjoyed a seven-year downhill drought. Austria is thirsty for
:05:13. > :05:15.
:05:15. > :05:19.success. In the newspapers you can read this year 2006 because
:05:20. > :05:23.everybody is writing about when will be the next win and we're
:05:23. > :05:27.waiting. The to his kind of the same pressure we have in
:05:28. > :05:33.Switzerland and it is never easy to manage that, especially when you
:05:33. > :05:38.have 40,000 people pushing you, demanding you win the race and the
:05:38. > :05:42.pressure is never easy to manage. The media builds up the pressure
:05:42. > :05:49.and the rivalry between Switzerland and Austria, but I think everybody
:05:49. > :05:54.would be happy if Austria can finally win again. Is it time to
:05:54. > :06:01.scratch the seven-year itch? think so, for sure it is time. It
:06:01. > :06:10.is a very long time and the last five years the Swiss guys have won.
:06:10. > :06:18.Today we try to change this. big question this week is calmly
:06:18. > :06:28.Austrians put some one on top of the podium? They have two big star
:06:28. > :06:29.
:06:29. > :06:36.names who can do it. Where are the threats coming from? They are best
:06:36. > :06:43.skier in the world, Aksel Lund Svindal, and don't rule out Johan
:06:44. > :06:48.Clarey and Christophe Innerhofer. Johan Clarey has just beaten the
:06:48. > :06:54.speed record, on a wave of confidence. What role does
:06:54. > :07:01.confidence play? One is you get it, you are on an upward spiral.
:07:01. > :07:05.Confidence breeds success and that is working for the now. By that
:07:05. > :07:10.Russia now, Aksel Lund Svindal is on a downward spiral after crashing.
:07:10. > :07:14.He made a point of winning the first two training runs and that
:07:14. > :07:20.has boosted his confidence. didn't get them in the Rye Tour de
:07:20. > :07:27.but you picked the top three last week. He was it this week? Aksel
:07:27. > :07:31.Lund Svindal in first, Hannes Reichelt in second, and Klaus
:07:31. > :07:35.Kroell in third. They imagine standing on top of the strife and
:07:35. > :07:40.careering down the hill at breakneck speed. Luckily, you don't
:07:40. > :07:44.have to do it because Graham is going to do it for you. This has to
:07:44. > :07:51.be the most terrifying camera run in the world of sport.
:07:52. > :07:56.This is the big one, the toughest course in the world. If you win the
:07:56. > :08:06.championships, you become a champion, if you win in Kitzbuehel
:08:06. > :08:12.
:08:12. > :08:22.the air, then through the compression. You are looking to
:08:22. > :08:26.
:08:26. > :08:34.stay as high as possible. Then fighting to get back to the gate.
:08:34. > :08:44.You have just got to stay out of this net. Made it! OK, this flat
:08:44. > :08:45.
:08:45. > :08:55.section lets you catch your breath, then you go to the part where it
:08:55. > :08:59.
:08:59. > :09:09.gets bumpy. Over the jump. Then through the best shape here. There
:09:09. > :09:09.
:09:09. > :09:19.is a lot of terrain, you really have to work the skis. -- the S
:09:19. > :09:22.
:09:22. > :09:28.shape. Get the energy back into your legs. We are approaching this
:09:28. > :09:35.section where we have to get the line just right. You come out of
:09:35. > :09:41.the fence into the compression, hard to the left. The skis just
:09:41. > :09:47.bouncing around. That was a very low lying. I would not have been
:09:47. > :09:57.faster in the race. Luckily I am not raising any more. Over the last
:09:57. > :10:06.
:10:06. > :10:13.jump. My legs are burning, and I tell you what, that might be only
:10:13. > :10:20.90 mph but it feels a whole lot faster. Skiing is very relative.
:10:20. > :10:27.it as evil and dangerous as ever? would say so, yes. There are some
:10:27. > :10:32.serious bumps. As you come across the finishing traverse, my line was
:10:32. > :10:37.very low and I would not have been fast in the race. Now it is time
:10:37. > :10:40.for the best races to take on the most difficult and dangerous
:10:40. > :10:44.downhill in the world. Matt Chilton downhill in the world. Matt Chilton
:10:45. > :10:54.has the commentary. It is the winter a theatre of dreams, where
:10:54. > :11:04.legends are created. The strife course on the Hahnenkamm mountain.
:11:04. > :11:04.
:11:04. > :11:09.Thousands have congregated. Max Franz is a way for Austria. He
:11:09. > :11:19.suffered a crash early in the season. A good solid landing, into
:11:19. > :11:23.
:11:23. > :11:31.the carousel turn. Gliding down towards this legendary section,
:11:31. > :11:41.wanting to keep clear of the netting at the side of the course.
:11:41. > :11:49.
:11:49. > :11:55.Just off the pace of Streitberger. The next major element is the big
:11:55. > :12:05.jump. Max Franz flies again. Lovely landing, picking his line as he
:12:05. > :12:06.
:12:06. > :12:14.hits the big bumpy traverse. Nice and high. 13 hundredth of a second
:12:14. > :12:18.behind at the last intermediate. 141.3 through the gun, and the lead
:12:18. > :12:23.in Kitzbuehel. Max Franz absolutely nailed the
:12:23. > :12:30.bottom part of the course, carrying the speed on to the traverse, and
:12:30. > :12:37.he was able to dive down at 141 kilometres per hour. That gave him
:12:37. > :12:47.the speed at the finish. Race face on today for Kjetil
:12:47. > :12:55.
:12:55. > :13:03.Jansrud. He means business as he the carousel. He has the top
:13:03. > :13:08.section dialled in so far. Now, the line here could be crucial for the
:13:08. > :13:18.Norwegian. He is the Norwegian number two with Aksel Lund Svindal,
:13:18. > :13:25.
:13:25. > :13:31.who was quickest in training, still to come. It is green all the way.
:13:31. > :13:41.He is still narrowly in front, 500 is of the second. On to the
:13:41. > :13:51.traverse, getting blown around. Final jump. A bit clumsy in flight.
:13:51. > :13:56.Has he done enough to lead? Not quite. Jansrud has come second.
:13:56. > :14:01.That gave the ground a bit of a scare. He was very fast on the top
:14:01. > :14:11.of the course, lost some speed in the middle, and didn't quite have
:14:11. > :14:15.
:14:15. > :14:24.the same speed as Max Franz down to gate. He has a lot of experience on
:14:24. > :14:32.this particular course. Smooth and long, and a soft, controlled
:14:32. > :14:39.landing. Up by quite a long way, 11 hundredth. Just a little low on the
:14:39. > :14:49.line as he comes into this turn. Peter Fill might have just lost his
:14:49. > :14:56.edge. My word, he has lost it completely. He is on his belly as
:14:56. > :15:06.he comes to a stop. He hit the netting hard, cartwheeling through.
:15:06. > :15:20.
:15:20. > :15:29.are to Peter Fill's skis. That's a Austria. The best chance,
:15:29. > :15:39.potentially, for the host nation today. That was lovely on the
:15:39. > :15:40.
:15:40. > :15:47.Mausefalle. The Karusell, slightly lower than he might have liked.
:15:47. > :15:56.Into the Steilhang. Nice control. Peter Fill got it all wrong - it's
:15:56. > :16:01.well negotiated for Klaus Kroell. Very close inteed all the way
:16:01. > :16:06.through for Klaus Kroell -- indeed all the way through for Klaus
:16:06. > :16:14.Kroell. Max Franz still leads here. For
:16:14. > :16:22.Austria they might be on for a one, two. Nice and gentle and soft on
:16:22. > :16:27.the edges. Wonderful control - even at high speed. 1.37.39 for Franz.
:16:27. > :16:34.Klaus Kroell is as close as he could be. Now he hits this bumpy
:16:34. > :16:41.traverse. Off the little jump there, rolls it
:16:41. > :16:48.through, tucks in, one more to come for Kroell.
:16:48. > :16:52.He's second. Oh, my word! Relief for Max Franz.
:16:52. > :16:59.So second place for Klaus Kroell. That's the Austrians in one and two
:16:59. > :17:04.so far. Kroell, to me, looked a little bit passive on top of the
:17:04. > :17:14.course. Then down the finishes, he had the same height and speed, but
:17:14. > :17:21.
:17:21. > :17:25.didn't have quite the same attack. Wengen. He broke the World Cup
:17:25. > :17:31.speed record. Can he be an ace on this maverick course and take our
:17:31. > :17:41.breath away? Johan Clarey, of France, in the
:17:41. > :18:05.
:18:05. > :18:15.across the snow. from danger, as he heads into the
:18:15. > :18:23.forest and getting faster all the time. Green all the way for the
:18:24. > :18:28.Frenchman. Five green lights in Kitzbuehel for Johan Clarey. He
:18:28. > :18:36.approaches the Hausberg. Oh, he's winding down the windows! Makes a
:18:36. > :18:42.decent landing. He has one-third of a second, surely. He's on to his --
:18:42. > :18:49.his way to the netting. Big crash for Johan Clarey. I think he's OK.
:18:49. > :18:52.He's fine. So, another crash. This time Johan
:18:52. > :18:57.Clarey crashing probably the scariest part of the course. He
:18:57. > :19:03.took huge air as he went off the Hausberg. Made that turn well. He
:19:03. > :19:13.was ahead as he crashed and just lent on the insides. Very, very
:19:13. > :19:21.
:19:21. > :19:26.consistent down hill racer of the season. He was very, very swift in
:19:26. > :19:36.training earlier in the week. Perfect conditions today. Can
:19:36. > :19:36.
:19:37. > :19:46.Svindal turn that training speed into a race win on the Hahnenkamm?
:19:47. > :19:47.
:19:47. > :19:57.Now, through the Steilhang, time for our leader's 33.6 and Svindal
:19:57. > :20:15.
:20:15. > :20:22.It would take a miracle for Aksel Lund Svindal to claw back that time.
:20:22. > :20:29.A solid jump. Very, very close to the netting. He's low on the
:20:29. > :20:35.traverse, into the shadow - it's dark down there and clips that
:20:35. > :20:44.control gate, which sends him on to the Zielschuss. I don't think it
:20:44. > :20:54.will happen for him. Sind sind is only fifth. -- Svindal is only
:20:54. > :20:58.
:20:58. > :21:08.Picked up a little bit of speed in the mid-part of the course. Didn't

:21:26. > :21:35.have the speed towards the finish. the high-speed courses. Likes it
:21:35. > :21:45.when it's bumpy and icy. He's sucking it all in today in the
:21:45. > :21:52.
:21:52. > :21:56.early stages on the Streif. Paris, joint winner of a downhill.
:21:56. > :22:06.A massive jump from Paris. He is travelling in Kitzbuehel. It has
:22:06. > :22:07.
:22:07. > :22:13.gone from red to green and getting better all the time for the Italian.
:22:13. > :22:23.Dominik Paris is 1600ths of a second faster. Really good gliding
:22:23. > :22:26.
:22:26. > :22:30.across the snow. He's still in front of Franz. Most of the crowd
:22:30. > :22:35.are hoping that Paris will be slower, but he's getting faster and
:22:35. > :22:42.faster. Now he's on the traverse. Won terful stuff from Paris --
:22:42. > :22:48.wonderful stuff from Paris. He's way ahead. Skiing for the lead in
:22:48. > :22:53.Kitzbuehel. Dominik Paris, of Italy, has first position by a massive
:22:53. > :22:59.margin. What a run! If you were watching last week the
:22:59. > :23:04.Wengen show, the piece we did on the two young Rockies, Max Franz
:23:04. > :23:10.and Dominik Paris and they are number one and two on the podiums
:23:10. > :23:15.so far. Brilliant skiing from Paris. Good on top of the course. He had
:23:15. > :23:24.the height and speed. He's getting a really good round of applause
:23:24. > :23:28.here in the finish. Erik Guay is ready to race. In preparation of

:32:20. > :32:28.What a classic race, Kitzbuehel served a top again. Christophe
:32:28. > :32:32.Innerhofer won last week, and Paris here in Kitzbuehel. These guys do
:32:32. > :32:36.speak Austrian so there is a certain amount of acceptance here
:32:36. > :32:41.but the drought continues for the Austrian downhill team.
:32:41. > :32:47.Now we are travelling across the Atlantic to one of the spiritual
:32:47. > :32:57.birthplaces of snowboarding - Tahoe in California, where I went to meet
:32:57. > :33:01.
:33:01. > :33:10.one of my heroes. Are you guys about ready? I have my snowboard on
:33:10. > :33:20.now. Where and I am riding, it is like time slows down. It keeps me
:33:20. > :33:24.
:33:24. > :33:29.alive and it also lets me live. one would recognise Tom Burt in the
:33:29. > :33:35.street and he does not court fame, but in the world of snowboarding he
:33:35. > :33:39.is a legend. To me, growing up he was an absolute hero and I used to
:33:39. > :33:43.pore over the videos he put together. Over the last three
:33:43. > :33:50.decades of cementing his position as one of the most important
:33:50. > :33:55.snowboarders of all time. When you grow up in the mountains, you live
:33:56. > :34:00.that lifestyle. You get kicked out of the house to go outside so we
:34:01. > :34:07.were hiking, skiing when we were young. The ended you first come
:34:07. > :34:17.across snowboarding? In about seventh grade, 1976, although I
:34:17. > :34:19.
:34:19. > :34:28.didn't try it until 1992. I hiked up the hill, started to lean back
:34:28. > :34:35.and realised I had to lean forward. Where does a Lasker fit into that
:34:35. > :34:39.picture? Were your eyes bulging out the potential? So many mountains,
:34:39. > :34:49.just wide-eyed because you are like that would be fully and that would
:34:49. > :35:00.
:35:00. > :35:04.be funny. -- fun. We started doing first decents off the get go.
:35:04. > :35:12.has done things that not a lot of people have dared to do since done
:35:13. > :35:22.that was a long time ago. Just his outrageous lines, death-defying.
:35:23. > :35:23.
:35:23. > :35:27.has the eye for getting down the mountain in the most difficult way,
:35:27. > :35:33.of the path of most resistance. What's is probably the trademark of
:35:33. > :35:37.his Roms is the exposure, the amount of risk on the slope.
:35:37. > :35:43.Glaciers, the mini avalanche you create on a steep slope every time
:35:43. > :35:53.you turn and a lot of his biggest runs were so exposed it is called a
:35:53. > :35:54.
:35:54. > :35:58.no-fall run. If you fall, there is no question - you will die.
:35:58. > :36:04.thought it was possible maybe. There were crevasses all over the
:36:04. > :36:09.place at the bottom and I don't know how long it was, but probably
:36:09. > :36:14.close to a 5000 ft descent. If anything went wrong on the upper
:36:14. > :36:19.third, you are pretty much guaranteed to die. I looked at it,
:36:19. > :36:23.didn't like the conditions, to picture on my Polaroid, thought
:36:23. > :36:31.about it for several days, went back and thought it was not as bad
:36:31. > :36:41.as I thought it might be. We are doing it right now. Three, two,
:36:41. > :36:47.
:36:47. > :36:57.one... He has gone. Looking good. felt pretty psyched out by the
:36:57. > :36:57.
:36:57. > :37:04.ice... I made my way down the mountain pretty fast. Everything
:37:04. > :37:09.went good. Still to this day, I don't think anybody has ridden that
:37:09. > :37:19.line. For that not to be re created in this length of time, that says a
:37:19. > :37:23.
:37:23. > :37:27.lot. Looking back, what motivated you to take that on? It looked fun,
:37:27. > :37:37.it looked do wobble. A back in the day, there was some pretty fierce
:37:37. > :37:38.
:37:38. > :37:42.cadence. Tom had more of a sustainable riding approach which I
:37:42. > :37:45.think helped trickle-down and probably saved a lot of lives. He
:37:46. > :37:51.has probably been doing it for 30 years and there is something to be
:37:51. > :37:57.said for that. Testament. I have never been afraid to back off from
:37:57. > :38:02.anything. If you don't feel good about it, come back the next week.
:38:02. > :38:09.I have climbed a lot of big mountains so I was very well versed
:38:09. > :38:14.and everyone followed me around. No one would go there unless we went
:38:14. > :38:19.there and check it out and we basically started guiding from day
:38:19. > :38:24.one in Alaska and continue to do that today. If his entire career
:38:24. > :38:28.has been built on a bedrock of incredible mountain knowledge. His
:38:29. > :38:33.understanding of terrain, glaciers, snowpack is what allowed him to do
:38:33. > :38:38.those ridiculous slopes in the first place, but these days he is
:38:38. > :38:42.teaching not only Professional snowboarders but also the guides,
:38:42. > :38:45.and anyone you speak to in Alaska will tell you his wealth of
:38:45. > :38:55.knowledge is probably the most voluble commodity when it comes to
:38:55. > :38:55.
:38:56. > :39:05.riding such big mountains. I have been with a lot of people for their
:39:06. > :39:11.
:39:11. > :39:21.first ride. The to such another level when your guide is giving you
:39:21. > :39:21.
:39:21. > :39:28.(BLEEP) for not riding something. He stands on the lines and says you
:39:28. > :39:38.can go down here. I'm like it you think so, I got it. He approves of
:39:38. > :39:38.
:39:38. > :39:42.my riding, that is a lot to me. Obviously he is one of my idols.
:39:42. > :39:50.Snowboarding, like any creative pursuit, is incredibly fickle when
:39:50. > :39:54.it comes to fashions. Tricks come and go. Throughout the phases and
:39:54. > :39:59.fashions, Tom Burt has stayed true to his big mountain ideals and at
:40:00. > :40:04.times that was extremely unfashionable. During the big 1990s
:40:04. > :40:09.when it was about freestyle on kickers, I was teased mercilessly
:40:09. > :40:13.by my friends for watching his videos but now he has had the last
:40:13. > :40:20.laugh. When you go back and watch the videos, the tricks you see the
:40:20. > :40:30.other riders doing look basic compared to today's standards. But
:40:30. > :40:34.
:40:34. > :40:44.when you watch Tom's sections, his tricks have stood the test of time.
:40:44. > :40:50.In all the movies I did, there is one repeat shot of one line, a
:40:50. > :40:55.credit roll repeat. Of every line in every film you have ever been in,
:40:55. > :41:01.they are all fresh? You have never repeated another line? No, I
:41:01. > :41:06.haven't. He may be one of the oldest guys on the hill, but he is
:41:06. > :41:09.still quiet and humble and takes pleasure from the simple things.
:41:09. > :41:19.could have continued to film but I chose to have family and hang out
:41:19. > :41:25.
:41:25. > :41:30.with my kids. I ride hard when I ride and it is really fun. In
:41:30. > :41:40.snowboarding you had racing, pipe competitions, how big the X Games
:41:40. > :41:42.
:41:42. > :41:48.is and the Olympics, and you add everything else in some there.
:41:48. > :41:54.this series we have been looking at some of Britain's newest stars of
:41:54. > :42:04.winter sports. Those men and women will be hunting for gold in Sochi
:42:04. > :42:09.next year. My name is Ben Kilner, and I have
:42:09. > :42:14.been snowboarding now for 14 years. I am getting on a bit. It started
:42:14. > :42:21.with some snowboarding lessons, and it just went on, and I got here
:42:21. > :42:25.where I am today. Half pipe is a U- shaped ditch. We tend to get about
:42:25. > :42:30.six hits. You want to get everything perfect. When you have
:42:30. > :42:35.managed to stay on your feet at the bottom of the half pipe, it is a
:42:35. > :42:43.brilliant feeling. You get the same on slope style if you stay on your
:42:43. > :42:51.feet. Sochi will be my second Olympics, so I can concentrate
:42:51. > :42:55.fully on my run. I have taken in the experience and now I can give
:42:55. > :43:05.it 100%. News from the women's tour - a
:43:05. > :43:08.
:43:08. > :43:12.Lynsey von won on her home snow. In Aspen Colorado, one of our medal
:43:12. > :43:18.hopefuls James Woods has qualified first in the skiing slope style.
:43:18. > :43:26.His final is coming up in a few hours so we wish him the best. In
:43:26. > :43:33.Alpine, Robert Potts scored a rare victory in the under 16s category
:43:33. > :43:39.in the Czech Republic. If you press your red button, you can get the
:43:39. > :43:43.highlights of the men's slalom from Kitzbuehel. Next week, we are
