:00:13. > :02:35.For generations and generations, ski racing fans have been making
:02:36. > :02:39.the pilgrimage to Kitzbuehel, to watch their heroes compete
:02:40. > :02:44.for the most prestigious title on the World Cup circuit.
:02:45. > :02:47.It's something of a pilgrimage for the racers too - skiing
:02:48. > :02:49.the Hahnenkham is an honour, but it's tinged with
:02:50. > :02:52.The Streif is a course to survive first.
:02:53. > :03:06.we have highlights of the women's downhill from Cortina.
:03:07. > :03:07.And Jenny Jones has been to meet Jamie Anderson,
:03:08. > :03:10.the girl who beat her to Olympic gold in Sochi.
:03:11. > :03:12.At the tender age of 25, Jamie's a snowboarding veteran,
:03:13. > :03:15.a legend in the sport, and someone who has always done
:03:16. > :03:31.How do you cope with the pressure? Music. What was was playing? Naz!
:03:32. > :03:35.The song is I know I can. I'm all motivated and I get dropped in. It
:03:36. > :03:38.was so good. Everything came together.
:03:39. > :03:50.Last week Gra went to meet Kjetil Jansrud, the Norwegian
:03:51. > :03:53.who won here in Kitzbuehel last year, and went on to take
:03:54. > :04:06.From ten years old you heard about the legends and watched it on TV and
:04:07. > :04:12.saw the crashes. I never forget my first time. The first time is always
:04:13. > :04:19.the most scary thing you can do. That is just about finishing and
:04:20. > :04:23.you're on the start and finding for the winds and racing compared to
:04:24. > :04:36.just racing it is two different sports. The risk-taking is huge.
:04:37. > :04:41.Jansrud leads. What would it mean to win in Kitzbuhel last year? From the
:04:42. > :04:52.moment you cross the finish line until you go to bed, it is basically
:04:53. > :04:57.mad. The race has made a lot of legends. Winning it leaves you
:04:58. > :05:10.breathless for a second. Last year when you won in Kitzbuhel Aksel was
:05:11. > :05:17.cheering you on. How does that relationship work? It is not a new
:05:18. > :05:22.situation. He has been a fast skier for many years. I haven't been as
:05:23. > :05:27.fast as him. Last year I was winning race after race, this year he has
:05:28. > :05:33.been winning race after race. Svindal is out to prove that he is
:05:34. > :05:38.No 1. Ripping it up. From the start to the finish you're thinking about
:05:39. > :05:42.yourself. Our policy is when we're not skiing from start to finish, we
:05:43. > :05:48.are a team and a small team, like now, how it works we have the same
:05:49. > :05:53.skis, so we can switch around. Which is abnormal. And if I ski before him
:05:54. > :05:59.I go on the radio and tell him how the course was. If I give the report
:06:00. > :06:03.one day I get it the next day. This a why we are a small team that has
:06:04. > :06:08.been performing good. You don't argue at all? For all. Arguing,
:06:09. > :06:11.fighting, all small things. But you fight over small things. Everybody
:06:12. > :06:16.has to let out some steam sometimes in a team. It is normal. We can
:06:17. > :06:19.discuss everything from like politics to like small things that
:06:20. > :06:24.are just, you can have an argument and then you're done. But you're
:06:25. > :06:29.not... You can't let it go to say I don't like you as a person. So we
:06:30. > :06:36.have got to split. That is not good. I think also a big part of it is...
:06:37. > :06:42.Like putting your ego away at certain times. Because almost
:06:43. > :06:47.everyone, an athlete, has a big athlete. I have accepted being the
:06:48. > :06:52.No 2, which I think is OK. You get what you deserve in sport. It is
:06:53. > :06:54.more cool to win than get second. I have to make sure I give him the
:06:55. > :07:01.competition he deserves. Jansrud seems pretty relaxed
:07:02. > :07:04.about playing second fiddle to Aksel Dare I say you were in his position
:07:05. > :07:08.at times when you were racing Do you think he's being genuine
:07:09. > :07:18.there or might he be raging inside? I think he is being genuine.
:07:19. > :07:22.Although racing is an individual sport, if your team mates are doing
:07:23. > :07:28.well, it is confirmation that the programme you have been on is
:07:29. > :07:32.working. Let's get down to form. Svindal is the man to beat. But he
:07:33. > :07:36.has never won here. Can he do it today? He didn't train particularly
:07:37. > :07:42.well. But he is on amazing form. There is a lot of guys going for him
:07:43. > :07:53.here. I went with the Italians last week and I think they're going to be
:07:54. > :08:04.strong. Inner hopper had a brilliant ride. There is an added layer. The
:08:05. > :08:13.racers are distracted, we have Formula One cars at the top. You
:08:14. > :08:22.have Arnold Schwarzenegger in the stands. It is easy to ignore the
:08:23. > :08:30.other stuff, but the main motivation is achieving ski racing immortality.
:08:31. > :08:38.But for those not up to the test, the course will chew them up and
:08:39. > :08:42.spit them out. Who who get Nair name etched on a gondola and tame this
:08:43. > :09:01.beast of a piste. He is in trouble. He has got it
:09:02. > :09:04.wrong. He has got it. Win here and it makes you a legend.
:09:05. > :09:06.As the race nears, there's a tension around the start hut
:09:07. > :09:09.because the racers know they're facing their most difficult,
:09:10. > :09:16.At the grand old age of 50, let's hope experience is his friend
:09:17. > :09:23.as he prepares to trouble the Streif once again.
:09:24. > :09:31.We had some new snow and fog this morning, but the skies have cleared.
:09:32. > :09:36.We are left with a head wind on the top of the mountain and we have had
:09:37. > :09:42.to move the start. As you go over this jump with wind under your ski
:09:43. > :09:50.tips, you would fly way too far. It is the compression, picking up speed
:09:51. > :09:58.again. This is the big 180 turn. You have to keep a high line. Change in
:09:59. > :10:07.the air and down. That is the fence. Down on that left ski. Oh! And on to
:10:08. > :10:12.the flat. With the new snow that's fallen, you have got to get into
:10:13. > :10:19.good gliding position and let your skis wash across the snow. Now, we
:10:20. > :10:28.are approaching the toughest part of down hill. The Hausberg. Important
:10:29. > :10:37.to sit up high and get a good line off the jump. Over the jump into the
:10:38. > :10:44.compression. And then hard on that ski to get a high line. Over the
:10:45. > :10:53.bumps. It is rough there. Really rough. Absolutely flying. Over the
:10:54. > :11:05.finish jump. Good flight. Tucking into the line. That is a real test
:11:06. > :11:09.and skiing into the finish in front of all of these fans is such an
:11:10. > :11:20.incredible feeling. Time too hand you over to your commentator for the
:11:21. > :11:25.race Matt Chilton. COMMENTATOR: The trains have been carrying thousands
:11:26. > :11:38.of spectators. There is nowhere like Kitzbuhel. An epic battle of man
:11:39. > :11:45.versus mountain. Kilde just out from the start. It is normally a steep
:11:46. > :11:54.jump. It is a steep start as he comes swinging through one of the
:11:55. > :12:04.toughest turns in World Cup racing, the turn. He is inside the line.
:12:05. > :12:19.Kilde coming to the end of this section. In good shape. We pick him
:12:20. > :12:23.up at the Hausbergkanter. Good flight, good landing. He just what
:12:24. > :12:37.has to stay on his feet and he will lead. Kilde with 1.53.59 leads the
:12:38. > :12:43.way. Kilde with a good run. But not so clean on the top of the course.
:12:44. > :12:52.It is really bump there. You have got a big hit as he switched his
:12:53. > :12:59.edges to dive down the steep slope. Janka, in the last nine or ten years
:13:00. > :13:07.the Swiss have had more success than the Austrians. Janka has been out
:13:08. > :13:11.the Swiss have had more success than seasons. Showing signs of some of
:13:12. > :13:18.his brilliant best in the last three or four weeks. He is up at the first
:13:19. > :13:28.intermediate. Through the exit and in good shape. Janka 112 kilometres
:13:29. > :13:33.an hour. That is about 70mph. It has been green all the way for Janka.
:13:34. > :13:46.Just under half a second in front and intermediate No 4. Down to 0.28
:13:47. > :13:53.at No 5 as he comes into famous Hausbergkanter now. Has to take it
:13:54. > :13:58.on an angle. He lands cleanly. He is getting thrown around on to the big,
:13:59. > :14:06.bumpy traverse. Skis barely touching the snow as he makes that last turn.
:14:07. > :14:12.One final jump to go, 134 through the speed gun. He will lead for
:14:13. > :14:18.Switzerland. He has got it by more than half a second. Pulling it out
:14:19. > :14:22.of the bag on the Streif. He was good on the top of the course, using
:14:23. > :14:27.his technical ability to generate speed. He carried that speed well in
:14:28. > :14:31.the mid section and then finally nailed that traverse. It had the
:14:32. > :14:47.high line and he was able to dive down and carry speed to the finish.
:14:48. > :14:51.The Americans racing in memory of Bill Johnson, the champion who
:14:52. > :14:55.passed away last week. He is one of the more experienced athletes and
:14:56. > :15:03.knows the course well. That is key in Kitzbuhel.
:15:04. > :15:10.Nyman has taken a nice Highline. Nothing wrong with this so far.
:15:11. > :15:18.Three 10th of a second in front. Nothing wrong with this so far.
:15:19. > :15:26.has gone half a second up. Good from Nyman. Can he hang onto that? Nyman
:15:27. > :15:31.touches the hands down and props himself back up again. That has
:15:32. > :15:44.shaken his confidence. He spins out having been half a second and front.
:15:45. > :16:03.Feuz attacks the top of the Streif. Before entering the carousel. Years
:16:04. > :16:18.behind his team-mate Janka at the first intermediate. Nice line. He is
:16:19. > :16:31.the quickest man on the mountain. That equates to more than 70 mph. He
:16:32. > :16:43.is flying. Switzerland could post first and second fastest times. That
:16:44. > :16:51.might silence the Austrians here. Feuz sets himself up. As to fly
:16:52. > :17:04.long. Make the landing soft. Stand won the right ski to set up for the
:17:05. > :17:15.Traverse. He gets thrown around by the ambulation is. It could be won,
:17:16. > :17:25.two first Rosalind. -- for Switzerland. Switzerland first and
:17:26. > :17:31.second. Feuz made a bit of a mistake at the top of the chorus. He managed
:17:32. > :17:34.to carry good speed out onto the flat and I think what might have
:17:35. > :17:39.happened as the headwind at the start of this race seems that have
:17:40. > :17:44.dropped so Feuz was able to pick up a lot of speed in the mid part of
:17:45. > :17:53.the costs and able to hold on to keep the lead in the finish. Clarey
:17:54. > :17:55.is very delicate on his edges at keep the lead in the finish. Clarey
:17:56. > :18:05.times. On his best form. He keep the lead in the finish. Clarey
:18:06. > :18:10.started positively. The French off the back of the clean sweep in the
:18:11. > :18:16.Alpine combined. The last time they had equalling sweep was back in the
:18:17. > :18:29.70s. The French are on good form. High in confidence.
:18:30. > :18:36.Struggling for control but it is a decent high line. Higher than just
:18:37. > :19:04.about anybody else. It is close. He is third. That
:19:05. > :19:15.equates to 12 metres. Feuz hangs on. The ground drops away beneath him.
:19:16. > :19:20.That is a really decent start for the Italian. A good journey man on
:19:21. > :19:29.the World Cup. He has the Italian. A good journey man on
:19:30. > :19:34.experience racing in Kitzbuhel. He knows this track as well as anybody.
:19:35. > :19:51.He is the fastest through the speed trap at the top. More than 71 mph.
:19:52. > :20:04.Fill is flying on the Streif. Fill is quicker than the leader Feuz. Can
:20:05. > :20:09.he get the line right on the approach? It has to be smooth and
:20:10. > :20:18.clean. Nice and relaxed. The take-off is good. The landing is
:20:19. > :20:34.good enough. As to find a clean Highline. It is good.
:20:35. > :20:40.He takes first. Fill leads the way for Italy.
:20:41. > :20:44.Fill for Italy.
:20:45. > :20:49.Swiss. I thought he had dropped a fraction also Michael at that lost
:20:50. > :20:53.on some speed but he was able to carry on and carry that down
:20:54. > :21:14.on some speed but he was able to finish. Brilliant from the Italians.
:21:15. > :21:23.Reichelt enjoys the whole weekend and soaks up the adulation. He stays
:21:24. > :21:42.pretty relaxed and child throughout. Nothing relaxed and chilled about
:21:43. > :21:48.this. Reichelt got on his heels. Reichelt still travelling nicely.
:21:49. > :21:53.Nothing wrong with this descent so far. The time has moved against him
:21:54. > :21:59.so he cannot afford anymore mistakes. He has to be high on
:22:00. > :22:01.landing of the counter and into the big Traverse. He is going to have to
:22:02. > :22:21.be brave. That is horrible. A horrible crash.
:22:22. > :22:25.We will keep our fingers crossed. He almost head-butted the snow. He just
:22:26. > :22:30.had to wait as he hit the safety netting at high speed.
:22:31. > :22:35.There was a harsh as that was a spectacular crash. The worst place
:22:36. > :22:41.to go down on this course. If you overload going into the compression
:22:42. > :22:47.and get catapulted out you almost accelerate into the net.
:22:48. > :23:09.Reichelt is on his feet. Svindal the winner in Lake Louise.
:23:10. > :23:14.And last weekend. He has never conquered Kitzbuhel. A bit of a
:23:15. > :23:19.scrappy start. Getting bounced around. He looks to be travelling
:23:20. > :23:43.nicely. Further down the hill. Before the
:23:44. > :23:50.business end of this. He has left himself work to do on the bottom
:23:51. > :24:04.part of the course. He is trailing by 2200th of a second.
:24:05. > :24:12.-- 22 hundredths. The Streif does not have any respect
:24:13. > :24:16.for your world ranking or your ability. If you get it wrong in that
:24:17. > :24:28.spot going into the compression it goes horribly wrong. This year it is
:24:29. > :24:51.particularly tough. It has taken out Svindal and Reichelt.
:24:52. > :25:00.What a start for Jansrud. He has tasted success in Kitzbuhel before.
:25:01. > :25:14.He was the winner here 12 months ago on a shortened course.
:25:15. > :25:23.He has got exactly the same time as Svindal, who came a cropper. Jansrud
:25:24. > :25:40.has lost a huge chunk of time. His quest to win Kitzbuhel for the
:25:41. > :25:51.second-year in succession has faded away. He has stayed on his feet,
:25:52. > :25:57.which is more than many. He is on his way towards the finish. It will
:25:58. > :26:00.be a case of making up the numbers. That helicopter shot gives you a
:26:01. > :26:08.great impression of the velocity of these downhill skiers.
:26:09. > :26:14.The mental side of things, knowing his team-mate and friend Svindal had
:26:15. > :26:21.crashed out and still having to perform, and secondly because of the
:26:22. > :26:25.long delays to Reichelt and Svindal it has started to snow and that has
:26:26. > :26:42.slowed the track down and that made a difference.
:26:43. > :26:55.Gisin has made a decent start. He posted some decent results in
:26:56. > :27:02.training midweek. He does not have the best visibility. He has got good
:27:03. > :27:15.information from his team-mate who is currently in second and third.
:27:16. > :27:25.Just over half a second behind Fill. So many have encountered problems
:27:26. > :27:29.and danger just after landing. Gisin landlord than most. That gives him
:27:30. > :27:37.the opportunity to set up for the traverse. He is getting chucked
:27:38. > :27:47.around all over the place. He has come through unscathed. Can he make
:27:48. > :27:53.the top five? Yes. Remarkable result.
:27:54. > :28:01.Great run from Gisin. The snow has stopped. It might be clearing up
:28:02. > :28:11.again. Mack, it Fill might start to get nervous. The Swiss have three in
:28:12. > :28:17.the top five. A good day for Switzerland but not the Austrians,
:28:18. > :28:21.their rivals. The first skier on the Streif tumbled across the line.
:28:22. > :28:33.There would be no cushioning the blow for the home fans.
:28:34. > :28:41.The best of the finished seventh. He was the last race to tackle the
:28:42. > :28:46.mountain after the referee decided the increasingly flat light posed a
:28:47. > :28:53.serious risk to the remaining athletes. Almost eight years after
:28:54. > :28:57.his last downhill victory, Fill was crowned the champion of Kitzbuhel.
:28:58. > :29:05.What has made the difference for you? I do not know. Maybe I am
:29:06. > :29:14.married this year. It is a great season for me. This was my goal.
:29:15. > :29:19.Always a difficult one. High dramatic with the crashes and really
:29:20. > :29:20.tough. The first podium it is perfect for the whole Swiss team. I
:29:21. > :29:52.am happy. It was confirmed on Saturday that
:29:53. > :29:56.Aksel Svindal suffered a season-ending injury
:29:57. > :30:07.Aksel Svindal suffered a between eight and nine months.
:30:08. > :30:15.As the dust settles, the women have been racing in Cortina and we have
:30:16. > :30:24.the best of the action from the down hill in Italy. Cortina is one of the
:30:25. > :30:30.most picturesque stops on the circuit. But it is tough. The course
:30:31. > :30:39.has one of the stiffest tests on the calendar. The winner will be crowned
:30:40. > :30:45.the Queen of speed. This American is dominating and needs one more
:30:46. > :30:49.victory to break the all time record for World Cup down hill wins and
:30:50. > :30:55.this could be the perfect place to do it. Vonn has won nine World Cup
:30:56. > :31:03.races here. Could anyone challenge Lindsey for the crown here in
:31:04. > :31:09.Cortina? The sun was shining and the wind was swirling. But he took the
:31:10. > :31:14.lead and set the time to beat. The wind blew harder and the race was
:31:15. > :31:19.interrupted. Vonn had more time to contemplate what she wanted to
:31:20. > :31:27.achieve. But finally the moment had arrived. COMMENTATOR: Can she write
:31:28. > :31:33.another chapter in her remarkable clear here on a piste that she
:31:34. > :31:42.loves, a piste that she was fastest on in the two training runs. Vonn
:31:43. > :31:50.hard on that right ski. Keeps the tuck position, uses the hips to make
:31:51. > :31:56.the turn. Some of the speeds. But look at the time eight tenth faster
:31:57. > :32:06.than our current leader. Vonn looking to continue her love affair
:32:07. > :32:14.with this resort. 1.16 now the gap. 12 years ago as a 19-year-old she
:32:15. > :32:20.scored her first podium here. That is the first error from Vonn and she
:32:21. > :32:30.is very wide there. What does the clock say? The clock says she is
:32:31. > :32:35.1.33 in front of the leader. She will want to lay down as quick a
:32:36. > :32:45.time as possible here to try and get this record off the final jump. It
:32:46. > :32:52.will be smashed by over a second. Lindsey Vonn leads here in Cortina.
:32:53. > :33:00.With the World Cup leader still to race, it wasn't time to dust off the
:33:01. > :33:06.crown yet. I Gut has more speed at this point. While nay came close,
:33:07. > :33:13.neither could match the American's speed. How does it feel? The most
:33:14. > :33:20.successful female down hill skier in history. It is pretty awesome. The
:33:21. > :33:25.more people talk about the records, the harder it is to break them. I
:33:26. > :33:29.try to stay focussed on my skiing. It was tricky, the wind was going
:33:30. > :33:35.back forth. I'm happy that I was able to come away with another win
:33:36. > :33:44.and another record. If you want to see more of the women's down hill
:33:45. > :33:51.ski Sunday extra is on iPlayer and this live coverage on Tuesday.
:33:52. > :34:03.Lynsey Vonn recorded her second win earlier today. In Kitzbuhel the
:34:04. > :34:14.British ski Serce failed to finish. Kristoffersen took victory from the
:34:15. > :34:21.home favourite. Elsewhere Sasha Han won the free ride world tour in
:34:22. > :34:30.Andorra. On Friday Bill Johnson lost his long battle with illness at 55.
:34:31. > :34:37.He was the first American man to win the Olympic down hill in 84. It is a
:34:38. > :34:45.packed calendar at this time of year and also in free style and snowboard
:34:46. > :34:52.with the X games around the corner. Ed has been to Switzerland to watch
:34:53. > :35:02.the events. The largest half pipe welcomed the riders on Friday and
:35:03. > :35:11.the men's and women's competitions were up to expectations. Can he put
