:00:52. > :01:00.Hello and welcome to Chamonix, this weekend, this is the venue for the
:01:01. > :01:04.fastest men on the mountain. They will be racing in the shadow of Mont
:01:05. > :01:08.blanc and the home fans will be cheering on the French team. But the
:01:09. > :01:14.origins of the Kandahar ski race started on the other side of the
:01:15. > :01:18.channel. The British love affair with sport goes back centuries. Our
:01:19. > :01:25.country's passion for rules and regulations is just as timeless.
:01:26. > :01:28.Skiing was not so much a sport as a means of getting around. That was
:01:29. > :01:34.before the British tried it and loved it. Soon, the Kandahar Ski
:01:35. > :01:39.Club had written the rules of two new disciplines, slalom and
:01:40. > :01:43.downhill. In 1931, the first-ever skiing World Championships took
:01:44. > :01:48.place. The rule book was written by the British and British names were
:01:49. > :01:52.entered into the history books. It was an enrichment, Sir Arnold Love,
:01:53. > :01:55.who persuaded the Olympic Committee to accept ski racing into the
:01:56. > :02:00.competition schedule. But then, the Alpine nations had mastered the
:02:01. > :02:05.British rules and make the sport their own. We might have written the
:02:06. > :02:09.rule book, organise the committee and taken the minutes but
:02:10. > :02:21.unfortunately, British names were absent from the Hall of Fame. But we
:02:22. > :02:30.didn't turn our back on snow. Giving up, that is just not British. We
:02:31. > :02:34.have challenged the establishment. We have tasted glory only to have it
:02:35. > :02:42.cruelly taken away. And for better or worse, we do love it. British
:02:43. > :02:49.athletes have never been content to make up the numbers and now, they
:02:50. > :02:53.are contenders. After all, London to the Alps is not that far and when we
:02:54. > :03:00.get here, we have proved we can flourish. Once British sport was all
:03:01. > :03:07.about writing the rules and making sure the athletes blazers fitted.
:03:08. > :03:12.Now, things are a little different. Now there is a new generation of UK
:03:13. > :03:13.talent who have the backing and potential to write their names in
:03:14. > :03:31.the history books. Chamonix of course has a heritage
:03:32. > :03:36.all its own. The first host of the Winter Olympics in 1924. It is a
:03:37. > :03:41.regular stop for the World Cup and the freeride world tour. Which make
:03:42. > :03:44.our features this week more appropriate. After the racing we
:03:45. > :03:49.have a report from the winter youth Olympics in Lillehammer. Jenny Jones
:03:50. > :03:59.has caught up with our British gold medal winner. New champion, Madi
:04:00. > :04:05.Rowlands. Well done. How does that feel? I am so happy. And we bring
:04:06. > :04:09.you the incredible story of Britain's best big mountain is no
:04:10. > :04:13.border, Sascha Hamm, his journey from London to the freeride world
:04:14. > :04:17.tour has been a very colourful one and it includes the most terrifying
:04:18. > :04:29.thing that can happen to any skier or snowboarder. I am dead. Hello.
:04:30. > :04:35.No. That really does send shivers down your spine. Thankfully, his
:04:36. > :04:40.powerful story has a happy ending. First, it is time for the downhill
:04:41. > :04:45.in Chamonix. The race bears the name, the Kandahar, a town in
:04:46. > :04:49.Afghanistan, how did the two come to share a name? It started with the
:04:50. > :04:54.Kandahar Ski Club which was founded in Murren, his main benefactor was
:04:55. > :04:58.the Earl of Kandahar, a British military commander. They started
:04:59. > :05:03.racing in Murren and then to St Anton, and then it went on the road
:05:04. > :05:11.to Sestriere, garnish and Chamonix. This is a classic stop of the
:05:12. > :05:15.Kandahar ski race. How do you know so much? I am a member of the
:05:16. > :05:21.Kandahar Ski Club and I trained there as a kid. The French have a
:05:22. > :05:25.rich ski racing heritage, it was the French is set up the World Cup along
:05:26. > :05:29.with the American, Bob Beattie. Jean-Claude Keeley took the first
:05:30. > :05:36.two World Cup titles but not since Luc Alphand have they had an overall
:05:37. > :05:39.title winner. That was back in 1997, although France have a large chunk
:05:40. > :05:44.of the outs, it is a small proportion of their country so ski
:05:45. > :05:47.racing is a minority sport. You compare that to Switzerland or
:05:48. > :05:51.Austria, it is their number one sport. That is why they are able to
:05:52. > :05:55.put more investment in it. The French do have strength in depth and
:05:56. > :06:03.could produce an overall winner. The best shot recently has been Alexis
:06:04. > :06:06.Pinturault. Could the winner be a Frenchman? Guillermo Fayed, the
:06:07. > :06:10.group upon this mountain and he knows it like the back of his hand.
:06:11. > :06:14.He has the skill set to do well on this course but the surprise could
:06:15. > :06:20.come from anywhere. Steven Nyman is a good shout, big and strong and
:06:21. > :06:25.smooth on his skis. Guillermo Fayed looked incredibly relaxed. That is
:06:26. > :06:26.what you need on this course. Eight glittering list of previous winners,
:06:27. > :07:02.who can join Schranz, Kuszczak, Gra. COMMENTATOR: Getting chucked about
:07:03. > :07:10.all over the place. Can he take first position? Yes. Before the
:07:11. > :07:15.racers tackle this Kandahar course, it is time for me to take a closer
:07:16. > :07:18.look at it. A little bit of snow falling, at the start there are a
:07:19. > :07:24.couple of little turns that you need to stay high on. And just work the
:07:25. > :07:32.speed, we are heading down towards the first jump. This first jump, you
:07:33. > :07:40.still need the right gear to get up in the air. This is the passage
:07:41. > :07:44.Eriksson. Setting up for the rush a blanc. It is important to delay this
:07:45. > :07:52.term, you have to wait and then get hard on that ski. Quite rough and
:07:53. > :07:54.bumpy over the little road. You need good direction back. Don't want to
:07:55. > :08:16.miss that gate. Over the next jump. This is so important, you need to
:08:17. > :08:22.carry the speed out onto the flat. Try and carry maximum speed. Towards
:08:23. > :08:30.the road jump. You have to jump away a little bit here. And it is the
:08:31. > :08:32.fastest part of the course, close to the finish line, it is quite icy
:08:33. > :08:45.here. And then you cross the line. A lot of gliding on that course and
:08:46. > :08:49.the new snow in the middle section is slowing it down ever so slightly.
:08:50. > :08:56.That is why it is so crucial to carry speed out of the blanc and
:08:57. > :09:01.over that jump. That is where the race will be decided. Over the Max
:09:02. > :09:06.Chilton for commentary. COMMENTATOR: Midwinter in the shadow of mighty
:09:07. > :09:09.Mont blanc and the crowd are out in force for the Kandahar race. We are
:09:10. > :09:21.set for the ninth World Cup downhill of the season. An explosive start
:09:22. > :09:27.from the man in yellow. A flat, like today, that was a clumsy looking
:09:28. > :09:32.jump by the Canadian. Last time he raced here was back in 2012, he was
:09:33. > :09:37.stretchered off the mountain with a broken leg. He needs to put that out
:09:38. > :09:40.of his mind and focus on the high-speed work ahead. Looking
:09:41. > :09:51.pretty good so far. But currently do in the finish, the Austrian, and
:09:52. > :10:00.Osborne parody as he comes through. He comes through in good shape. 16
:10:01. > :10:06.hundredths off the pace now. His next bit, 1.44.43, he has an
:10:07. > :10:12.advantage of one hundredth of a second and he is the fastest man on
:10:13. > :10:18.amount in. 117 K pH, absolutely tearing down. Final turn, has he
:10:19. > :10:23.done enough to lead? He has got it, he is into first for Canada. The
:10:24. > :10:29.Canadians have a happy history on this course and he really attacked
:10:30. > :10:31.on the top part. But little roll out of the start catching him
:10:32. > :10:35.off-balance and throwing him onto the tales of the skis but he was
:10:36. > :10:39.attacking the top section. What he does really well is the glide,
:10:40. > :10:47.picking up a lot of time after that road jump to the finish. An early
:10:48. > :10:51.marker set by the Canadian. Next up, Steven Nyman, the veteran American
:10:52. > :10:54.has notched up three World Cup downhill wins and is looking to the
:10:55. > :11:00.future, hoping to leave a legacy block -- beyond his racing career.
:11:01. > :11:06.He works for a charity that gives underprivileged kids the chance to
:11:07. > :11:11.try snow sports. Can he make child's play of the Chamonix slopes? Steven
:11:12. > :11:17.Nyman of American, still pushing after 100 metres. Still involved
:11:18. > :11:26.with his ski poles in the snow. The leader from Canada, he is faster. He
:11:27. > :11:34.just missed a medal at the Alpine world skiing Championships last
:11:35. > :11:41.year. He finished fourth behind the medal winners. Getting bounced
:11:42. > :11:46.around, tough to see where he is going in the flat light, no real
:11:47. > :11:52.definition on the high part of the course. Visibility slightly easier
:11:53. > :11:56.on the bottom half. 0.23, beautiful jump there from Steven Nyman.
:11:57. > :12:00.Absolutely rock-solid in-flight. Now, he opens up a wide stance,
:12:01. > :12:09.cutting through the air effectively. Through the forest and Nyman looks
:12:10. > :12:14.to be in good shape here. Steven Nyman, 11th place in the World Cup
:12:15. > :12:21.downhill standings coming into this event. Looking for a decent finish
:12:22. > :12:26.for the season. Look at this, 0.69 in front. The Canadian's lead is
:12:27. > :12:34.under threat from Steven Nyman from Utah. Coming towards the road jump,
:12:35. > :12:38.this could be a crucial part of the course. He needs to get this right,
:12:39. > :12:42.long flight, soft and gentle on landing. Then there is one tight
:12:43. > :12:47.turn towards the finish which has caught a few of them out. Nyman
:12:48. > :12:54.needs to take it early, he tucks involve a line, Nyman leads the way
:12:55. > :12:58.for the USA, by eight tenths of a second. My tip for a surprise
:12:59. > :13:02.winner, Steven Nyman putting down an impressive run. So loose and relaxed
:13:03. > :13:06.on his skis, there was one section where he was going through the
:13:07. > :13:12.middle part of the course where he made this incredibly smooth
:13:13. > :13:16.transition. He takes an enormous amount of risks by staying so
:13:17. > :13:24.relaxed and a brilliant glider. Absolutely great on the flats. Next
:13:25. > :13:31.up is Dominik Paris, when he is not competing, he is the front man of a
:13:32. > :13:34.death metal band. Rather in keeping with his all out racing, he will
:13:35. > :13:40.hope he is pitch perfect on the slope and he will be singing a
:13:41. > :13:45.victory song in Chamonix today. Dominik Paris, the big Italian, what
:13:46. > :13:49.a powerful start, goodness me. You will never see anyone except the
:13:50. > :13:56.start faster and with more determination than that. He is
:13:57. > :14:01.without a World Cup win this season. Went well in the two training runs,
:14:02. > :14:12.looking quite sharp. He is faster than Nyman at the first checkpoint.
:14:13. > :14:17.Now he needs to set up and negotiate these this turns. Ard on the left
:14:18. > :14:21.ski and then hard on the right. Standing tall and negotiating the
:14:22. > :14:29.next jump on the next exit. On his way. Down towards the forested part
:14:30. > :14:34.of the course where visibility is a little more straightforward. Just
:14:35. > :14:41.three hundredths in front. Off onto the glide.
:14:42. > :14:48.Rock solid in flight. Total commitment to this course so far for
:14:49. > :14:53.Dominik Paris of Italy. The Italians have had a good season across the
:14:54. > :15:03.board, in both the men's and the women's world Cup tour. 1: 43.
:15:04. > :15:09.22 hundredths of a second. Bottom part of the course to come.
:15:10. > :15:14.Visibility difficult here. Can he negotiate this final turn? It looks
:15:15. > :15:18.good. Paris leads in France and that will take some beating.
:15:19. > :15:24.When you see Dominik Paris warming up in the start area you have to
:15:25. > :15:28.realise he's a big guy. He's strong enough to carry that extra weight
:15:29. > :15:33.and that is what helped him glide along the flat. It is not just about
:15:34. > :15:37.that, he's very smooth on his skis. That is what makes him such a good
:15:38. > :15:45.glider, what makes him really fast on a course like this.
:15:46. > :15:49.Adrien Theaux on his way for the French team, looking for early
:15:50. > :15:56.speed. Has been a winner already this season. He took round four of
:15:57. > :15:57.the world Cup tour at the end of December in Italy. This is a good
:15:58. > :16:01.start. December in Italy. This is a good
:16:02. > :16:05.The crowd are seeing this on the big screen, down in the village and they
:16:06. > :16:09.are starting to get behind Adrien Theaux.
:16:10. > :16:12.Hugely talented downhiller. Let's see if he
:16:13. > :16:13.Hugely talented downhiller. down here today.
:16:14. > :16:22.Good on the way in. Smooth on the exit. Stays within the
:16:23. > :16:26.blue racing lane, which is adding a certain contrast and definition to
:16:27. > :16:30.the race's visibility in Chamonix today.
:16:31. > :16:37.He's lost a bit of time on the glide. Now Adrien Theaux needs to
:16:38. > :16:42.just claw back a couple of tenths to give himself a chance of a podium.
:16:43. > :16:48.Off the road jump, which has been built up artificially to add to the
:16:49. > :16:58.spectacle of the Kandahar Downhill. Theaux cannot beat - he is third for
:16:59. > :17:02.the moment. 1.15 slower than the Italian.
:17:03. > :17:08.Ready to race is Guillermo Fayed. The local favourite is having a
:17:09. > :17:14.great season, despite the setback of someone making off with his ski
:17:15. > :17:15.boots. Luckily an eagle-eyed commentator spotted the thief
:17:16. > :17:30.wearing them on the mountain. Guillermo Fayed, from right here in
:17:31. > :17:34.Chamonix. He grew up racing on these slopes and his friends and family
:17:35. > :17:39.are here, making a huge amount of noise at the bottom of the course.
:17:40. > :17:43.They are encouraged because Fayed set the fastest time in the first
:17:44. > :17:48.training run, held on the mountain on Wednesday.
:17:49. > :17:56.Potentially a sign of good things to come. Guillermo Fayed - fifth in the
:17:57. > :18:01.World Championship. Downhill last season. Fifth in the World Cup
:18:02. > :18:08.downhill standings. Third season. Fifth in the World Cup
:18:09. > :18:17.classic before Christmas. In pretty good shape so far. Very much in
:18:18. > :18:26.touch here. 0.34 down. He's closed the gap by another eight hundred
:18:27. > :18:32.dretds -- hundredths. Fayed was particularly sharp on the bottom of
:18:33. > :18:38.the mountain. Needs to replicate that on race down. Lands softly and
:18:39. > :18:45.gently and sets infor the running to home. Last couple of homes. It will
:18:46. > :18:54.be close. Oh, he's third for the moment.
:18:55. > :19:00.Very good from the local boy. Great gliding position. You can tell he
:19:01. > :19:03.knows every inch of this course. Ran slightly wide on that last turn.
:19:04. > :19:06.That is when he dropped a couple of tenths. He was challenging for
:19:07. > :19:31.second, but now he's down in third. Fill off and running. A smooth start
:19:32. > :19:56.for the veteran Italian. 700ths of a second off the pace of Paris.
:19:57. > :20:03.If he never wins another race, he will always be remembered for
:20:04. > :20:07.conquering the strife in mid-January.
:20:08. > :20:12.Off on to the flied here in Chamonix. He needs to pick up points
:20:13. > :20:19.if he is to mount a serious challenge for the downhill title for
:20:20. > :20:21.2016. He's in touch here. 26 hundredths off the time of Dominik
:20:22. > :20:26.Paris. Now we hundredths off the time of Dominik
:20:27. > :20:31.of the course. Just over half a second for Fill to find. He
:20:32. > :20:37.approaches the road jump and the final tricky turn, where some have
:20:38. > :20:43.discovered trouble, Peter Fill is on course for a top five. Stands hard
:20:44. > :20:48.on the left ski. Has to steer clear of the final control gate. Dives
:20:49. > :21:01.inside that and Peter Fill is fourth for Italy. 0.89 off the pace. Next
:21:02. > :21:06.is The lightingen Ball. He claims playing golf is vital in his
:21:07. > :21:11.rehabilitation. Now he's off the golf course he will hope there's no
:21:12. > :21:12.bogeys here for him and that lightning strikes with victory
:21:13. > :21:32.today. Chasing the time of Dominik Paris
:21:33. > :21:38.here. His strength and confidence grows
:21:39. > :21:46.after coming back from injury, race by race. Lots of Swiss fans here.
:21:47. > :21:51.Down on to the Swiss side only an hour's drive from the Chamonix
:21:52. > :22:01.valley. So plenty of Swiss supporters have made the journey and
:22:02. > :22:07.they may well be remembered because remembered Beat Feuz is storming
:22:08. > :22:14.downhill. Beat Feuz needs to be in the hunt.
:22:15. > :22:24.He's pushing for a podium place here.
:22:25. > :22:32.Twenty one hundredths off the pace. That could deny Guillermo Fayed, who
:22:33. > :22:43.sits in place for the host nation, France. I a am not sure he'll beat
:22:44. > :22:48.Paris, but he will come close. Beat Feuz towards the final section. A
:22:49. > :23:02.little twitch there. Has he done enough? He's on the podium in third.
:23:03. > :23:03.A bit of a grown in the finish area as Beat Feuz knocks the favourite
:23:04. > :23:15.off the podium. Beat Feuz comes in to take third.
:23:16. > :23:20.Unlucky for Guillermo Fayed, the local boy, who was pushed down to
:23:21. > :23:26.fourth place. You are having a great weekend here
:23:27. > :23:31.in Chamonix. What do you like about the course so much? I don't know. A
:23:32. > :23:39.good speed on the course and it's not so easy to bring it on the flats
:23:40. > :23:46.and that's what I did today and I'm happy. What are the skills you need
:23:47. > :23:50.to ski well on this course? In Chamonix you need to execute the
:23:51. > :23:57.top, which is the technical section and carry all that speed on the
:23:58. > :24:03.flat. I thought I nailed it, but Dominik nailed it. He's a big boy. I
:24:04. > :24:08.am 100kgs, he's probably 105. Steven Nyman says that you have a little
:24:09. > :24:14.bit extra weight than he does and that's what made the difference?
:24:15. > :24:31.Maybe. A lot of weight here. Very possibly.
:24:32. > :24:35.The World Cup took place in Italy. Vonn did secure the downhill title
:24:36. > :24:41.with her second place on Saturday, behind the surprise winner of Italy.
:24:42. > :24:55.In the freestyle World Cup test event in South Korea Britain's Katie
:24:56. > :24:59.Almerod finished fourth. In the ski slopes Katie Sumerhayse finished
:25:00. > :25:03.sixth. The winter youth Olympic Games has seen some excellent
:25:04. > :25:08.results for British athletes, including gold.
:25:09. > :25:16.There was bronze in the women's monobob.
:25:17. > :25:27.In freestyle skiing Addy Rowlands had bronzed in the slopestyle.
:25:28. > :25:34.No matter how different the discipline, all athletes are linked
:25:35. > :25:39.by their need for an adrenaline fix, to seek out thrills every day life
:25:40. > :25:43.cannot supply. Outside this action-packed world things can be
:25:44. > :25:48.surprisingly different, as Ed has been finding out.
:25:49. > :25:54.It is the middle of January in London, probably the last place you
:25:55. > :26:00.would expect to find Britain's best mountain snowboarder. This is where
:26:01. > :26:07.you will find Sascha Hamm, Monday to Friday, 9-5.
:26:08. > :26:16.Hello. How are you? Ed, you are too early. We are trying to work. If you
:26:17. > :26:21.can come back in like three hours. No!
:26:22. > :26:24.I was expecting your suit. A tie and a jacket.
:26:25. > :26:34.Have you ever seen me so smart? No. Exactly. We are like an estate
:26:35. > :26:39.agent, but like clients who want to invest, not in stocks and shares,
:26:40. > :26:43.but to buy a property. It is incredibly serious. Not really. This
:26:44. > :26:48.is a side of you I have never seen after 20 years. We did a season back
:26:49. > :26:55.in 2000. Are you tried it. You failed. I managed it. But... So much
:26:56. > :27:04.I want to ask you about. I want to get stuck into these guys first. I
:27:05. > :27:08.want to talk to them. OK. Do you know what Sascha Hamm does in
:27:09. > :27:14.his spare time? I believe he's famous, isn't he? He does some
:27:15. > :27:16.extreme sport. I have seen some videos on YouTube after having
:27:17. > :27:26.googled his name. How much did you know about what he
:27:27. > :27:31.had done in snowboarding terms then? Not much. I mentioned his name to a
:27:32. > :27:35.friend who went to university and he was like, oh, my God, you work with
:27:36. > :27:40.him! I was like, what, you are joking. Like idealising him. I was
:27:41. > :27:44.like, no, no, he's not like that. When he decided to go back to
:27:45. > :27:50.snowboarding was it a concern for you? First of all the free ride I
:27:51. > :27:53.was told that was going to be a one-off, which is why I agreed he
:27:54. > :27:57.could leave the office on a Thursday night and come back on a Monday.
:27:58. > :28:04.This has been going on for three years now. So, yeah. Do you think
:28:05. > :28:08.there's an end in sight for the adrenaline side of him? No. The
:28:09. > :28:11.transformation is complete? It is final.
:28:12. > :28:22.Off to the mountain. See ya! Bye! How do you separate office life
:28:23. > :28:26.and snowboard life? At the moment, what I have done is I have managed
:28:27. > :28:31.to separate it. I have four days work. I think I am more productive
:28:32. > :28:34.and have a weekend of three days, not spending it in London and then
:28:35. > :28:38.you can switch off. Of course when you come back into the office on
:28:39. > :28:45.Monday you are fully prepared to get back to work. In six times of winter
:28:46. > :28:49.you have to transition from the office into an elite snowboarding
:28:50. > :28:54.contest. You are talking about snowboarding competitions. I dodo
:28:55. > :28:59.this every weekend. This is from mid-December all the way through to
:29:00. > :29:02.June. I thought I would take you to the home of the free world ride
:29:03. > :29:11.tour. You were one of the first British
:29:12. > :29:17.rider who got an international contract. You were the most
:29:18. > :29:23.naturally talented of our generation of snowboarders and you pretty much
:29:24. > :29:28.turned your back on it? I want to be a snowboard professional. I did five
:29:29. > :29:32.seasons in the Alps and then after that won the British Championships
:29:33. > :29:37.and that got me a bit of money to start what I really always wanted to
:29:38. > :29:44.do, which was to become a Formula One driver.
:29:45. > :29:48.I wept to a racing school in the UK, in Silverstone, but it was manic
:29:49. > :29:53.with the amount of money you have to put into it. Snowboarding is with
:29:54. > :30:01.?10,000 you have the best season ever. With motor racing with
:30:02. > :30:07.?100,000 you hardly scrape through. What was your nickname? Sacha the
:30:08. > :30:11.crasher! I did have a couple of incidents, but that is the way you
:30:12. > :30:17.learn: You have to push the limits and see how far you can go. You did
:30:18. > :30:20.decide to go back to competing. You did have free ride proper. You made
:30:21. > :30:35.a splash, didn't you? I had a very good run, I was quite
:30:36. > :30:40.happy. For me, it then went downhill. You pulled it back in
:30:41. > :30:46.Alaska, one of the best runs of the day? Alaska was good fun, it had
:30:47. > :30:49.loads of powder, one of the best events we have had. You have been
:30:50. > :30:56.pretty much Europe -based, the first time you were there? Europe is
:30:57. > :30:59.accessible, you do not have rules, you have to take your own
:31:00. > :31:03.responsibility into your own hands. That leads us into one of the most
:31:04. > :31:11.spectacular avalanche survival stories on record. You saw this
:31:12. > :31:18.space that lead into complete no man's land, my friend got turned
:31:19. > :31:25.around and me being stubborn, decided to keep on going.
:31:26. > :31:52.I was about five feet under the snow, I was stuck in their and I
:31:53. > :31:57.thought that was it. Luckily I had a very big air pocket on the right
:31:58. > :32:04.side of my body and my phone was literally in the right pocket. Yes,
:32:05. > :32:09.yes. I called my friend, I navigated him to roughly where I was and said
:32:10. > :32:14.if I could hear them getting louder, tell them and that is how they ended
:32:15. > :32:19.up pinpointing me. I have never heard anyone surviving past and our
:32:20. > :32:24.really, let alone two hours. You'll agree usually guys suffocate. I got
:32:25. > :32:27.really lucky, learned my lesson, don't go riding on your own and the
:32:28. > :32:33.most important one is don't go riding when you are very tired. You
:32:34. > :32:39.look back and you are not 40 yet and you have done a huge amount. Is
:32:40. > :32:46.there anything you still have to do? For me, snowboarding, I am in my
:32:47. > :32:52.30s. But for me it is about enjoyment still. When you are in
:32:53. > :32:56.London, you basically wake up and go into work and you are stuck on the
:32:57. > :32:59.tube, being out on amount in, you are free. Snowboarding has always
:33:00. > :33:05.been about being out there with friends and doing things where after
:33:06. > :33:13.you have done your run, or you have climbed that peak, it fulfils you.
:33:14. > :33:18.Sascha Hamm with an unconventional route to the top of his sport. It is
:33:19. > :33:22.something that former chalet girl and Olympic bronze medallist Jenny
:33:23. > :33:26.Jones can relate to. This week she has been with some athletes who have
:33:27. > :33:30.had their pathway to a leaked level competition mapped out from an early
:33:31. > :33:38.age, at the winter youth Olympics in Lillehammer.
:33:39. > :33:52.The Winter Olympics two years ago was one of the best experiences of
:33:53. > :33:56.my life. She has done it. It wasn't just winning a bronze medal at the
:33:57. > :34:01.Olympics, it was more about being part of a team and representing my
:34:02. > :34:06.country. What an amazing opportunity for 16 young GB athletes to get a
:34:07. > :34:12.taste of what is potentially to come. I am heading to Oslo to watch
:34:13. > :34:16.the half pipe because I read you want to see Madi Rowlands in action,
:34:17. > :34:21.she is only 15 and is already making waves in freestyle skiing. This is
:34:22. > :34:25.the first summer I have seen the half pipe and it is not for the
:34:26. > :34:26.faint-hearted. They are definitely going to have to hold their nerves
:34:27. > :34:44.in this contest. There she is, go on. She is safe.
:34:45. > :34:52.Yes. Maddie just put it down, lovely 540 and a brilliant 720.
:34:53. > :35:07.I am Alexei to the year, I don't know why. The champion, Madi
:35:08. > :35:15.Rowlands. Well done. How does that feel? I am so happy. What does this
:35:16. > :35:24.event mean to you? Everything, I am so happy. You have to phone your
:35:25. > :35:29.mum. Back in Lillehammer, I am going to meet Adam Pinky Lee, the shifter
:35:30. > :35:35.mission and find out what he hoped the athletes take from this. First
:35:36. > :35:39.we are here to compete but also learn. They get to see the guys in
:35:40. > :35:44.Team GB and see how the system works. They understand the limbic
:35:45. > :35:47.village, dining room and the accreditation you need to go
:35:48. > :35:50.everywhere. Not just to watch each other in competitions but watching
:35:51. > :35:55.training and supporting one another. The older ones are looking after the
:35:56. > :35:59.younger ones. Some of the boys are giving it lots of this as they
:36:00. > :36:03.normally do. It has been great to see them work together and support
:36:04. > :36:08.one another. Do you think many of them will make it onto the Olympics
:36:09. > :36:14.from the standard you are seeing? I hope so, we talked about the youth
:36:15. > :36:17.games being part of a journey. Most of them are on the early path to
:36:18. > :36:21.their journey and hopefully that will finish in the Olympic Games and
:36:22. > :36:27.hopefully on the podium. It might not but that is what I want them to
:36:28. > :36:30.aspire to. I will check out buying the scenes in the Olympic Village
:36:31. > :36:33.area with Jasmine and Ian who will show me around, shall we say how
:36:34. > :36:46.dirty your rooms are? This is the girl 's room with four
:36:47. > :36:51.bunks, is it cramped or OK? It is very cramped but it is fine. I have
:36:52. > :36:56.to mention there is a medal hanging off of one of the beds, has it been
:36:57. > :37:03.hanging there ever since? It has been everywhere, in a few cupboards,
:37:04. > :37:07.bags. And you are the most messy? LOUD APPEALS
:37:08. > :37:20.Yes, definitely. This reminds me so much of Saatchi. Have you got
:37:21. > :37:25.different future aspirations for your career? For me it is a stepping
:37:26. > :37:28.stone between standard international races and the senior Olympics. After
:37:29. > :37:36.having done this, I am keen to go to the Olympics. The Olympics in Korea
:37:37. > :37:42.in two years but more realistic is six years in Beijing. Would you like
:37:43. > :37:47.the next one? I think Beijing is more realistic, it is definitely a
:37:48. > :37:52.stepping stone and I do think it is achievable. I love that the guys get
:37:53. > :37:56.to meet with athletes from all the different countries and sports but
:37:57. > :38:01.also keen to compete and beat them when it matters. A great atmosphere
:38:02. > :38:11.at the Alpine and now we have Yasmin in the giant slalom.
:38:12. > :38:21.She was coming out of the start, I hope she's not too nervous. Oh no, I
:38:22. > :38:25.don't know what happened, she is not actually finished the machine must
:38:26. > :38:34.have either crashed or missed a gate. How did it go? I tried to be
:38:35. > :38:39.as aggressive as possible and really go for it. I didn't want to go to
:38:40. > :38:42.the games and feel like I could have done more, I gave it everything. I
:38:43. > :38:48.am fine with coming out because I know I was trying my hardest. How
:38:49. > :38:53.has the experience been in the last few days? A bit of a roller-coaster,
:38:54. > :38:57.today didn't go as well, but I did get a couple of personal bests in
:38:58. > :39:02.the super combine so I am happy with that. It has been so good to come to
:39:03. > :39:06.the event and meet these guys, they have a real team spirit amongst
:39:07. > :39:14.them. Surely it is a great thing for them to experience the highs and
:39:15. > :39:17.lows of Olympic competition. Off the back of that gold in Lillehammer, it
:39:18. > :39:22.seems appropriate to start the last Ski Social of the season celebrating
:39:23. > :39:23.all of the young British talent in snow sport. We have accumulated
:39:24. > :39:45.quite a show your this week. That has been added to this week by
:39:46. > :39:52.ill of Ella and 10 euros Martha and Meyer. And seven-year-old Oscar who
:39:53. > :39:58.has the look of his old man about him. Sadly he has inherited my
:39:59. > :40:03.flailing arms. Talking about men, Graham did a course run here using a
:40:04. > :40:07.360 camera with some incredible footage, if you want to check it
:40:08. > :40:12.out, go to the BBC sport Facebook page. Nicola has worked out a way of
:40:13. > :40:19.filming himself through three of the Dixie degrees off piste, you do have
:40:20. > :40:22.to ski powder. It looks a little gangland style. Talking of South
:40:23. > :40:27.Korea, Jamie Nicholls has been testing out the new slopestyle
:40:28. > :40:34.course ahead of the Olympics. I guarantee you one thing, there will
:40:35. > :40:38.be far more rotations in that run. Before we go, we have time for a
:40:39. > :40:42.couple of questions. The first one from Dave Blackwell, he wants to
:40:43. > :40:48.know, in freestyle, who is pushing the boundaries more, skiers or
:40:49. > :40:54.snowboarders? 2009-2012, free skiing was leading the charge but since Lee
:40:55. > :40:59.Morgan landed the quad court, it has gone back to the snowboarding court.
:41:00. > :41:04.On a similar note, another cheeky question from a certain Tim Warwood,
:41:05. > :41:09.he wants to know what is better, skis or snowboard? I think what he
:41:10. > :41:14.is actually asking is will we have a fight? I have a snowboard in the
:41:15. > :41:18.back of my car and you don't have any skis. I know lots of skis or
:41:19. > :41:24.snowboard but not any snowboarders who ski, what does that tell you?
:41:25. > :41:30.Allen snowboarders it is easier than skiing. Skiers have more fun, it is
:41:31. > :41:34.more graceful and expressive. Power is nothing without control. This
:41:35. > :41:39.could go on forever and I do not want to end on a confrontational
:41:40. > :41:42.note. Use whatever vehicle you want on a mountain, just enjoy
:41:43. > :41:45.yourselves. I'm afraid that is it for this show and this season.
:41:46. > :41:52.Another incredible winter and what better way to to celebrate than a
:41:53. > :41:56.rousing highlight montage. Thank you Karen McDougal for selecting the
:41:57. > :42:03.music and for watching this evening everyone, see you next year.
:42:04. > :42:16.Yellow macro hi. This year we got given the opportunity to try
:42:17. > :42:50.something bigger and better. First time ever I ended up first.
:42:51. > :42:51.Wow, Jamie Anderson is untouchable. A lot of other people would like to
:42:52. > :43:01.be in there with you. What happens if you've done the
:43:02. > :43:12.calculation is wrong. Then someone might get their head chopped off.
:43:13. > :43:39.What a season riding has had. Gone. That is unbelievable. It is a world
:43:40. > :43:43.first. Aksel Lund Svindal absolutely burning it down. A brilliant second
:43:44. > :43:51.run, he has got it, Henrik Kristoffersen is first for Norway.
:43:52. > :43:59.This lady is absolutely unstoppable. Peter Fill skiing for the lead. I
:44:00. > :44:00.told you that was worth it, awesome stuff.
:44:01. > :44:04.'I think he was being nudged there by Moreno.
:44:05. > :44:08.'Mahrez kept control of the ball, looking for Vardy,
