0:00:51 > 0:01:00Imagination. It's a powerful force. Looking beyond what is towards what
0:01:01 > 0:01:05could be. It's the reason a small, sleepy mountain village transforms
0:01:06 > 0:01:15once every year into a place where the world's best ski racers meet.
0:01:16 > 0:01:19Absolutely ripping it up! In the shadow of three great peaks, eight
0:01:20 > 0:01:27unique and challenging course was created here. A course so beautiful,
0:01:28 > 0:01:37so dramatic that it has hosted almost a century of racing.
0:01:38 > 0:01:44Its demands its subjects to imagine themselves in action.
0:01:45 > 0:01:51Nearly home, he's done it! And to tread a fine line between
0:01:52 > 0:01:58courage and respect. And he has fallen. A gruelling
0:01:59 > 0:02:04course like this entices the brave, invites ingenuity, summons stamina.
0:02:05 > 0:02:10This isolated village is about to transform, and the stories that
0:02:11 > 0:02:11unfold will likely be more unpredictable and dramatic than we
0:02:12 > 0:02:20can imagine. Hello and welcome to Ski Sunday. We
0:02:21 > 0:02:26are in there and then, the Swiss resort but is usually quiet and
0:02:27 > 0:02:29quaint. But not this weekend. We are joined by thousands of ski racing
0:02:30 > 0:02:35fans for the classic Lauberhorn races. Unfortunately, the weather
0:02:36 > 0:02:39has conspired against us, on the downhill has been cancelled, but as
0:02:40 > 0:02:43we proved last week, slalom and can be run in almost any conditions, and
0:02:44 > 0:02:54the Alpine technicians will be at it again here in Wengen. Later we are
0:02:55 > 0:02:57in Austria for the women's downhill, and all the talk is an Lindsey
0:02:58 > 0:03:06Vonn's comeback from injury. And we will be talking about Jeremie Heitz,
0:03:07 > 0:03:10whose need for speed is no less now he is riding big mountain is. At the
0:03:11 > 0:03:17moment, I don't think there is anyone who can touch him.
0:03:18 > 0:03:21Jeremie Ayre is redefining what is possible on a mountain, and the
0:03:22 > 0:03:25results are simply breathtaking. Stay tuned for that. But now it is
0:03:26 > 0:03:31time for the slalom. Last week, Henrik Kristofferson was
0:03:32 > 0:03:35blisteringly quick in Adelboden, and last week he won all four of the big
0:03:36 > 0:03:40classic races. Can he do it again? There is a good chance he will. He
0:03:41 > 0:03:46has redefined slalom skiing, he gets incredible angles and yet he moves
0:03:47 > 0:03:49with such speed and precision. Even Marcel Hirscher who uses the brute
0:03:50 > 0:03:58force technique is going to struggle to beat him. And there is a new name
0:03:59 > 0:04:03in the mix, Manfred Molgg is skiing wonderfully. Yes, he counts for a
0:04:04 > 0:04:08lot here because it is flat and then steep and then flat again, and you
0:04:09 > 0:04:13need that experience. We also have a very young David Ryder, a very good
0:04:14 > 0:04:17result for him last week shows improving form. And that result
0:04:18 > 0:04:21gives in the points to stay in the mix for the top 15, because starting
0:04:22 > 0:04:30early in slalom is important. I can't wait to see how he does.
0:04:31 > 0:04:35Slalom is tested over two runs. He is the best of the action from the
0:04:36 > 0:04:51first. COMMENTATOR: This looked liked being
0:04:52 > 0:04:56a brilliant first run in baby 19, but an review, he was disqualified,
0:04:57 > 0:05:01having been shown to miss the first gate. Luke O'Dea looked good for a
0:05:02 > 0:05:05top in the first five, before a mistake close to the finish. It was
0:05:06 > 0:05:15a disappointing morning for the Swiss team, with mark Shinnie
0:05:16 > 0:05:19arguing with a slalom poll. A stunning run finish them second,
0:05:20 > 0:05:29just 0.23 seconds behind Kristofferson. Marcel Hirscher is
0:05:30 > 0:05:38just behind the Russian in fourth. The inform Italian Manfred Molgg was
0:05:39 > 0:05:47first this morning, but finished a disappointing ten. The Brit skied an
0:05:48 > 0:05:52impressive run. And entertaining first run, and a very solid marker
0:05:53 > 0:06:00in ninth place of David Ryder. Yes, brilliant skiing from Ryder, and he
0:06:01 > 0:06:05is one place ahead of Manfred Molgg, who we tipped for the podium. If
0:06:06 > 0:06:11Ryder keeps this form, he will get a at some stage.
0:06:12 > 0:06:15No surprises, Henrik Kristofferson is looking comfortable at the top of
0:06:16 > 0:06:19the table. Yes, and his success is rubbing off on his team-mates.
0:06:20 > 0:06:29Jonathan Nord bottom had a very good second run. That Norwegian team is
0:06:30 > 0:06:33brimming with confidence. And you have Marcel Hirscher further down
0:06:34 > 0:06:37the standings, is the gap to big to close? Not at all, this new snow
0:06:38 > 0:06:42that has fallen has made the piste ever so slightly more grippy than we
0:06:43 > 0:06:46normally see, so we have these close time differences which will will
0:06:47 > 0:06:51lead to an exciting second run. The racers will descend in reverse
0:06:52 > 0:06:54order, which means Henrik Kristofferson will have the luxury
0:06:55 > 0:06:59of going last. Charlie Broome has the commentary.
0:07:00 > 0:07:21COMMENTATOR: Julian Lizeroux France, the advantage over his compatriot.
0:07:22 > 0:07:30Lizeroux slightly airborne as we see the yellow underside of his skis
0:07:31 > 0:07:44over that terrain change. But it hasn't heard his time. Now the steep
0:07:45 > 0:07:51section. Lizeroux, 1:30.37, and look at that, finding a lot of time
0:07:52 > 0:07:59between two and three, and he is letting his skis run. He needs to
0:08:00 > 0:08:06keep it clean if he can. 1:45.18, he has beaten him by nearly a second!
0:08:07 > 0:08:12Impressive skiing by Lizeroux. He enjoyed that one!
0:08:13 > 0:08:19What a crowd pleaser, he dives for the line to take the lead, one of
0:08:20 > 0:08:24the first skiers to drop that inside hand onto the snow, and now all of
0:08:25 > 0:08:25the racers are pretty much doing it. He really is a ground-breaking
0:08:26 > 0:08:38slalom skier. COMMENTATOR: And this is Yuasa of
0:08:39 > 0:08:46Japan, the next ago, his advantage over Lizeroux is slender, and it is
0:08:47 > 0:08:52the same at the first checkpoint. Oh, but he goes down as he comes up
0:08:53 > 0:09:01to the terrain change. A very disappointing way for Yuasa's
0:09:02 > 0:09:14challenge to finish. And now it is Felix Neureuther of Germany. Third
0:09:15 > 0:09:19in the 2009 edition here. And his advantage has been hard at the first
0:09:20 > 0:09:24intermediate, now coming into the steep part, and he still has the
0:09:25 > 0:09:32green light. Good from the German number one. Fourth in Adelboden last
0:09:33 > 0:09:38weekend, second in Zagreb three or four days before that. And he still
0:09:39 > 0:09:40has the green light inside of the finish, and Neureuther is
0:09:41 > 0:09:46desperately low on the slope, that surely has cost him as he comes over
0:09:47 > 0:09:49the final terrain change, Neureuther trying to take it away from
0:09:50 > 0:09:54Lizeroux, Germany trying to take it away from France, and he does!
0:09:55 > 0:10:00Somehow Neureuther get himself back up right to take the lead, what a
0:10:01 > 0:10:04ski that was. Felix Neureuther just looks so
0:10:05 > 0:10:07smooth, he doesn't look like he is trying, but he gained the speed by
0:10:08 > 0:10:13not making any mistakes at all and staying relaxed, brilliant over that
0:10:14 > 0:10:20second last roller to the finish. COMMENTATOR: Next ago, baby number
0:10:21 > 0:10:3246, skiing into 11th place in the first run, his advantage, he won a
0:10:33 > 0:10:43Roper cup race, and he has clearly brought that form, and he has grown
0:10:44 > 0:10:47the advantage, a brilliant start from the Austrian. And he still has
0:10:48 > 0:10:52the advantage as he comes on the steep. This is the hardest part of
0:10:53 > 0:10:56the challenge, and the key is to be clean as you come off it to keep the
0:10:57 > 0:11:03speed as you come onto this relatively flat section. 1:29.53,
0:11:04 > 0:11:16has he done it? No, he hasn't. He has lost time, 14 hundreds the wrong
0:11:17 > 0:11:23side. He is outside by 12 hundredths of a second.
0:11:24 > 0:11:33Next races Manfred Molgg, enjoying something of an Indian summer, with
0:11:34 > 0:11:37a victory in Zagreb and Adelboden. He likes to keep fit by climbing
0:11:38 > 0:11:43when he is not skiing, but can he harness his slalom skills and top
0:11:44 > 0:11:53the podium in Wengen? COMMENTATOR: The winner in Zagreb,
0:11:54 > 0:11:57second in Adelboden. Disappointed with his first run, what can he do
0:11:58 > 0:12:03on the second? He has to let the skis fly here. His advantage over
0:12:04 > 0:12:17Neureuther has been extended to two tenths. Good skiing so far, and the
0:12:18 > 0:12:30clock turns red, so he is on the wrong side of the clock. Now, he
0:12:31 > 0:12:34goes to work on the flatter section, 1:29.53, he still has time to make
0:12:35 > 0:12:41up, can he find it in these closing terms where Neureuther had a big
0:12:42 > 0:12:48mistake? He is outside that time I over half a second.
0:12:49 > 0:13:01David Ryder of Great Britain the next to go, ninth after the first
0:13:02 > 0:13:11run, his advantage over Neureuther, he was excellent on the first turn,
0:13:12 > 0:13:22and he has started well again on the second run. Neatly done by David
0:13:23 > 0:13:31Ryding. He has the green light, but it is close. This is the hardest
0:13:32 > 0:13:37part of the race. Neatly done, but what does the clock say? The light
0:13:38 > 0:13:47is read by over half a second, and he has to let it go if he is to
0:13:48 > 0:13:52maintain a top ten position. He is currently skiing in sixth, 1:43.94,
0:13:53 > 0:13:58that time comes and goes, and David Ryding is eight for the time being.
0:13:59 > 0:14:01His second run started well, able to generate speed on the flat of the
0:14:02 > 0:14:06course, but when he got onto the steep, he seemed to block himself as
0:14:07 > 0:14:11he went down, not letting the ski run, not generating speed, no bigger
0:14:12 > 0:14:19mistakes but just slipping a couple of tenths every turn.
0:14:20 > 0:14:26Next to go is Mattias Hardin. This summer, his wife was caught in an
0:14:27 > 0:14:31avalanche in Chile and died, and here set up a foundation and wants
0:14:32 > 0:14:35to continue to celebrate the times he and Matilda spent skiing. How
0:14:36 > 0:14:43will he fare today? COMMENTATOR: Sixth back in 2016, how
0:14:44 > 0:14:49will he perform? This man knows only one way to ski, and that is fallout
0:14:50 > 0:14:57attack, he is like a bull in a china shop when he on a China -- slalom
0:14:58 > 0:15:04course. How will he fare here? Sweden with so many top skiers, and
0:15:05 > 0:15:08in the slalom standings, it is a battle for all of them as they try
0:15:09 > 0:15:14to make the four spots available at the World Championships, eight of
0:15:15 > 0:15:23them in the top 30. Half of them will be disappointed. 1:29.53 is the
0:15:24 > 0:15:27time to beat, and he is the wrong side of the clock. Driving hard for
0:15:28 > 0:15:32the line, can he find one tenth of a second? 1:43.94, no he can't, and he
0:15:33 > 0:15:46goes forth. Patrick Tyler, the next to
0:15:47 > 0:16:10challenge. He straddles as he comes over the
0:16:11 > 0:16:16change. What a disappointment. On a fairly innocuous gate, comedy gets
0:16:17 > 0:16:21it wrong. This Austrian has been enjoying the
0:16:22 > 0:16:37recent dump of snow. He has been on the podium in four out of five
0:16:38 > 0:16:43slaloms this season. COMMENTATOR: .41 of an advantage
0:16:44 > 0:16:52over Neureuther. He has never won here in Wengen. Can he put the
0:16:53 > 0:17:05record straight? Hirscher has over half a second on his German rival.
0:17:06 > 0:17:11Hirscher, he recorded a podium finish 101 last weekend, looking for
0:17:12 > 0:17:18victory number 20 in slalom. Still has the Green light, still over half
0:17:19 > 0:17:30a second. Hirscher, driving for the line. Hirscher leads. Neureuther
0:17:31 > 0:17:33drops into second. Absolutely blistering run from Marcel Hirscher.
0:17:34 > 0:17:40He does attack on the difficult courses. He cuts the line-up with so
0:17:41 > 0:17:44much pressure on the skis, so clean on his edges. Not as quick as
0:17:45 > 0:17:48Neureuther in the final section of the course, but has throw down the
0:17:49 > 0:17:59gauntlet of the Henrik Kristoffersen at the top.
0:18:00 > 0:18:07COMMENTATOR: His advantage over Hirscher, just 1200th of a second.
0:18:08 > 0:18:17He likes its steep, and that is what we have here it is desperately icy.
0:18:18 > 0:18:26Can he find his best form on the steep. Shows you how well Hirscher
0:18:27 > 0:18:40Skeete, because the Russian is just behind Hirscher. He is a long way
0:18:41 > 0:18:44off the pace of the Austrian. As skied himself out of the podium at
0:18:45 > 0:19:01the moment. In seventh place. Needs to find time on these bottom turns.
0:19:02 > 0:19:14Two remain, both are Norwegian. The first ago,. 26 years of age. His
0:19:15 > 0:19:32advantage over Hirscher Kotze. Gone the wrong side of the gate.
0:19:33 > 0:19:37That is the end of the road. What a disappointment after a great first
0:19:38 > 0:19:45run. Massive disappointment, sat on his inside ski and got late. Had to
0:19:46 > 0:19:49stop and went out of the course. Those World Cup points would have
0:19:50 > 0:19:56been crucial to move his start number forward. It wasn't to be for
0:19:57 > 0:20:04one Norwegian, one left to go. Henrik Kristoffersen, the last ago.
0:20:05 > 0:20:08Huge advantage over Hirscher. 0.56 of a second. He has won three of the
0:20:09 > 0:20:17four slalom races he has raced this season. Henrik Kristoffersen
0:20:18 > 0:20:29maintains the advantage at half a second. He makes slalom skiing look
0:20:30 > 0:20:34so easy. 113.6. He loses a little bit more time. Hirscher was
0:20:35 > 0:20:39excellent down this steep bit. Henrik Kristoffersen will be under
0:20:40 > 0:20:45pressure. But he rarely feels the pressure. Well, he has got the red
0:20:46 > 0:20:49light, so Henrik Kristoffersen doesn't ski it well. He will have to
0:20:50 > 0:20:59find something here, otherwise Hirscher will make the 20th slalom
0:21:00 > 0:21:03World Cup win. Never any doubt! Hirscher cannot believe it. Henrik
0:21:04 > 0:21:10Kristoffersen has won again. This man is incredible. When Hirscher saw
0:21:11 > 0:21:13the red light on, he thought he might have finally done it. But
0:21:14 > 0:21:22Henrik Kristoffersen skied the final section very well, almost as well as
0:21:23 > 0:21:29Neureuther skied it. And carried the speed over birth flat for Gates to
0:21:30 > 0:21:37the finish and picked the Austrian. The final results...
0:21:38 > 0:21:44It is Henrik Kristoffersen who will take the overall lead in the men's
0:21:45 > 0:21:50slalom standings. Dave Riding finishes 12th. It says something
0:21:51 > 0:21:59you're disappointed coming down with a top 15 results? I come down and I
0:22:00 > 0:22:04saw eight. I thought that is not top 15 if everyone finishes. It was
0:22:05 > 0:22:10tough, I did what I could, it is so hard to keep it going the whole way.
0:22:11 > 0:22:14I just miss out on the top ten. But I was happy with that. Today was a
0:22:15 > 0:22:20little bit more difficult with the courses being so fast and straight.
0:22:21 > 0:22:28I like it when it is turning more and a bit more difficult. So does
0:22:29 > 0:22:33Marcel? He does, but he skis with more power and intensity than I do,
0:22:34 > 0:22:40I am a little bit more smooth sometimes. But we are kind of
0:22:41 > 0:22:52similar. Today, I am really happy. The men have been racing in Wengen,
0:22:53 > 0:23:00but the women have been racing as well. We have one of the all-time
0:23:01 > 0:23:05greats. She has been the dominant force on snow for so long now,
0:23:06 > 0:23:09Olympic downhill champion, for overall World Cup son two world
0:23:10 > 0:23:16titles. Very little Lindsey Vonn hasn't already won. The
0:23:17 > 0:23:19uncompromising approach to ski racing has left her injury prone and
0:23:20 > 0:23:23this problem has been difficult to overcome. A training accident in
0:23:24 > 0:23:30November left out with extensive nerve damage and the loss of feeling
0:23:31 > 0:23:33in her right arm. The world kept spinning while she recovered,
0:23:34 > 0:23:40bringing an exciting new name to talk about in the name of downhill.
0:23:41 > 0:23:47Breathtaking skiing from the civilian.
0:23:48 > 0:24:00This weekend, against all the odds, guess who is back? Back again.
0:24:01 > 0:24:05Brillant from Vonn. No one can touch her when she is racing. Can you talk
0:24:06 > 0:24:12me through the last few months, what it has taken for you to get here? It
0:24:13 > 0:24:16has been a lot of work, rehab five hours a day. Step-by-step, I am
0:24:17 > 0:24:25making progress, but still a little bit to go. What do you make of Ilka
0:24:26 > 0:24:29Stuhec, and her progress? I haven't really watched, it is insane to what
0:24:30 > 0:24:37races when I cannot be there, but I am happy for her. Big goals, big
0:24:38 > 0:24:41titles? Definitely, I didn't finish two races and I missed one downhill
0:24:42 > 0:24:45and I still won the title. Anything is possible and I will give my best
0:24:46 > 0:24:51every day and we will see what happens at the end of the season.
0:24:52 > 0:24:59Who is this new start to emerge? It is Slovenia's Ilka Stuhec. She has
0:25:00 > 0:25:06won all three downhill this season beating the likes of Lara Gut along
0:25:07 > 0:25:11the way. She always had potential. She was a three-time junior
0:25:12 > 0:25:17champion, but her success this season has come as a surprise to
0:25:18 > 0:25:23everybody. Incredible season for you so far this year? It is amazing. I
0:25:24 > 0:25:28know how good I can ski but I didn't show it in the race yet. When it
0:25:29 > 0:25:33started to go, everything was growing and I was more confident. I
0:25:34 > 0:25:39had more fun and it is just flowing. At home, you are a big star, you are
0:25:40 > 0:25:45on billboards, how does it feel? Kind of weird. I am still the same,
0:25:46 > 0:25:51I didn't change, but everybody knows me now. It is nice. In 2016, Vonn
0:25:52 > 0:25:57was head and shoulders above the rest of the field before injury cut
0:25:58 > 0:26:01her season short. Last season she was an entire second faster than
0:26:02 > 0:26:06anybody else. As the 2017, the American still has World Cup titles
0:26:07 > 0:26:11in her sights. So victory number 77 of an already incredible career
0:26:12 > 0:26:18could be on the cards. Picking up the action is Charlie Broome.
0:26:19 > 0:26:27COMMENTATOR: Lindsey Vonn, coming back to reaction. But first Ilka
0:26:28 > 0:26:37Stuhec, picking up the mantle. The last skier to win the first four.
0:26:38 > 0:26:50Stuhec has the advantage by 0.74 over Sophia Godley in the finish.
0:26:51 > 0:27:00Stuhec continues her fine form. Goggia's time... She gets hard on
0:27:01 > 0:27:07the right ski before snaking her way back. Here comes the final jump.
0:27:08 > 0:27:18Stuhec, surely it is going to be beaten? 1.39, the right side of the
0:27:19 > 0:27:24clock. Here is a welcome sight for ski racing fans. Lindsey Vonn in the
0:27:25 > 0:27:34start of a World Cup race. That break of her right arm, has it
0:27:35 > 0:27:43affected her ability to get her initial speed out of the hut. She is
0:27:44 > 0:27:51half a second off the pace. Vonn, finds herself 0.89 out of the place.
0:27:52 > 0:28:02Will she find some time as she comes across the hill. Coming up to the
0:28:03 > 0:28:09final jump. Vonn goes into second for the time being. She is safely
0:28:10 > 0:28:14down. First blood to Ilka Stuhec as Lindsey Vonn's comeback ended in
0:28:15 > 0:28:25disappointment. The American eventually finished 13th. But Lara
0:28:26 > 0:28:33Gut was delighted. That was before Tino Y Rather stunned the crowd
0:28:34 > 0:28:38finishing ahead of Lara Gut. She looks set for her first downhill
0:28:39 > 0:28:46victory. It was time for one last twist.
0:28:47 > 0:28:58Christine Shire of Austria. Perhaps a dark horse. That has gone up to
0:28:59 > 0:29:040.60 two. She has run a little wide, Scheyer. Has to come back and that
0:29:05 > 0:29:11has resulted in her running wide as well. She still has half a second in
0:29:12 > 0:29:18the tank. Scheyer, in only had 12 World Cup start. Little wobble. Her
0:29:19 > 0:29:26best finish was ninth in Valder 's earlier in the season. She is there
0:29:27 > 0:29:30by 0.39 of a second. And Scheyer sends the Austrian coaches into
0:29:31 > 0:29:35raptures. A result nobody could have
0:29:36 > 0:29:38predicted, even more so when Jacqueline Wyles, an ambassador of
0:29:39 > 0:29:49the Lindsey Vonn foundation scored her maiden World Cup podium later
0:29:50 > 0:29:55on. Scheyer took the wind. The women's World Cup moves on next
0:29:56 > 0:29:59weekend and who knows what will lie in store for us.
0:30:00 > 0:30:03In as part of the world, every kid dreams of becoming a ski racer. It
0:30:04 > 0:30:08is the equivalent of wanting to become a footballer back home, but
0:30:09 > 0:30:13very few make it to the top. And like in football, the question is,
0:30:14 > 0:30:16what next? It was a conundrum Jeremie Heitz faced a few years ago.
0:30:17 > 0:30:23But he came up with a spectacular answer.
0:30:24 > 0:30:2850 years ago, these peaks were sold preserve mountaineers, armed with
0:30:29 > 0:30:32ice axes and a great deal of courage. The idea of descending
0:30:33 > 0:30:37these sheer faces on skis was considered impossible. Then came the
0:30:38 > 0:30:43steep skiing pioneers, and extreme skiing was born. Half a century
0:30:44 > 0:30:48later, a young man husband following in their footsteps, drawing up a
0:30:49 > 0:30:55list of some of the Alps' steepest peaks to climb and ski.
0:30:56 > 0:31:06I was born here in the mountains. I've been skiing all my life. For
0:31:07 > 0:31:10me, it wouldn't be possible to live without this passion, this sport. I
0:31:11 > 0:31:19came to a tiny Swiss mountain village to meet Jeremie Heitz. How
0:31:20 > 0:31:24would you describe this ski resort? It is where I learned how to ski. It
0:31:25 > 0:31:31is my home. As soon as I was able to walk, my parents put me on some
0:31:32 > 0:31:36skis, and then it is where I learned Alpine racing. You were a really
0:31:37 > 0:31:40talented downhill racer. Your technique was really good. But it
0:31:41 > 0:31:52was your size that you struggled with? Yes, exactly. I did some Swiss
0:31:53 > 0:31:56championships. But I was not good at all in alpine skiing. When Jeremie
0:31:57 > 0:32:00Lane school, he turned his back on formal ski training and started
0:32:01 > 0:32:12riding with the legendary extreme skiing brothers Nicholas and
0:32:13 > 0:32:25Lori Falquet. As soon as I saw him, I knew he had something special. He
0:32:26 > 0:32:29is super fast and super motivated, and you put this together, you have
0:32:30 > 0:32:32one of the best skiers in the world. Since he was a little kid, he had
0:32:33 > 0:32:38this energy that was probably hard to manage for the parents and
0:32:39 > 0:32:43grandparents, and maybe if you find a way to manage his energy in this
0:32:44 > 0:32:50sport, and that is a very important aspect of this little guy. Not big,
0:32:51 > 0:33:01but strong. Jeremie Chardy that energy into La List, his idea being
0:33:02 > 0:33:08to scale and film 15 of the top weeks. The idea was to show the
0:33:09 > 0:33:14evolution of steep skiing, so that was the red line for me. That was
0:33:15 > 0:33:21the natural evolution of my skiing, exploring this area for a lot of
0:33:22 > 0:33:33times, and for me, it is clear, the Alps is the best playground we have.
0:33:34 > 0:33:40He started skiing behind us. He was the first to climb out and ski down
0:33:41 > 0:33:48this route. Because before that, people had only been interested in
0:33:49 > 0:33:50climbing it? Exactly, and he said to himself, I think it is possible to
0:33:51 > 0:34:19ski down this route. Saudin became known for skiing the
0:34:20 > 0:34:26impossible, and Jeremie decided to attempt became slope. It has been 50
0:34:27 > 0:35:05years since he was here to ski for the first time.
0:35:06 > 0:35:11He wants to show that skiing has progressed, and for a long time it
0:35:12 > 0:35:15didn't. Steep skiing was popular for 20 years in the mid-80s, and then it
0:35:16 > 0:35:20was trying to get down the mountain in the safest possible way. The
0:35:21 > 0:35:26original steep skiers use the windscreen wiper technique, jumping
0:35:27 > 0:35:27back and forth. Basically trying to find the safest way to get down the
0:35:28 > 0:35:54mountain. I like to ski fast, and I've been
0:35:55 > 0:35:58doing that for ages now. When I was a kid, we were going up to the
0:35:59 > 0:36:02summit of these mountains, and we wanted to go the fastest we can, and
0:36:03 > 0:36:10to be the first down to the chalet, so that was always the game.
0:36:11 > 0:36:15Speed you ski on the gradients, the risk looks so high. How do you
0:36:16 > 0:36:20minimise the risk? It is the preparation. There is a lot of
0:36:21 > 0:36:25tension, because you are waiting a really long time to get those
0:36:26 > 0:36:32perfect conditions, and you are putting the pressure on yourself. I
0:36:33 > 0:36:36won't deny it is dangerous, but he is at such a level, he knows what
0:36:37 > 0:36:41he's doing. He is not unnecessary risks. People at the top of their
0:36:42 > 0:36:47game, they have got such a feel for the mountain. The reason why we
0:36:48 > 0:36:52climb at first this mountain, at least we are all aware about the
0:36:53 > 0:37:00steepness, the snow, and then we can see how much snow is sticking to the
0:37:01 > 0:37:05ice at every aspect. All of the elements you need to study to know
0:37:06 > 0:37:10it's safe? Yes, and to know how fast you could ski this route. The choice
0:37:11 > 0:37:16you have to make on the mountain, if you take the wrong decision,
0:37:17 > 0:37:33sometimes it can underpin a really bad situation.
0:37:34 > 0:38:04It is overconfidence, I think. When you lose one ski, especially on the
0:38:05 > 0:38:09ice, when it is super steep, you can't do anything. And on that
0:38:10 > 0:38:14gradient, at that speed, if you catch, you can start to tumble, and
0:38:15 > 0:38:19you won't stop? Yes. We are just playing close to a certain line,
0:38:20 > 0:38:22where you can have high consequences, and if you are close
0:38:23 > 0:38:29to that line a lot of the time, you have those experiences.
0:38:30 > 0:38:33If you are able to learn from this mistake, it is the best experience
0:38:34 > 0:38:37you can have on the mountain. After that, I was telling to myself that I
0:38:38 > 0:38:43need to go back home, to take a rest, to learn from this
0:38:44 > 0:38:48experience,... And to process it? Exactly, and then to come back, and
0:38:49 > 0:38:58we did that with success, so I am super happy.
0:38:59 > 0:39:04You've worked with some of the best skiers in the world. Put Jeremie
0:39:05 > 0:39:11Lane context with those. Just how good is he? In the environment he is
0:39:12 > 0:39:16in, which is the big, big mountain, at the moment, I don't think there
0:39:17 > 0:39:20is anyone who can touch him. I think the most impressive thing I have
0:39:21 > 0:39:29witnessed an skis is possibly the descent he did on the Gabba horn,
0:39:30 > 0:39:33and it is like the days where it is in a condition to ski so few and far
0:39:34 > 0:39:38between. We had the discussion if he should ski this line or not, and in
0:39:39 > 0:39:44my opinion, it was too risky for me, and he was still taking it. It's
0:39:45 > 0:39:51opening also my eyes. Not many people would have skied it, and I'm
0:39:52 > 0:40:31pretty certain no one would have skied it at the speed he did.
0:40:32 > 0:40:37He once dominant most scared he has ever been an skis were stood on one
0:40:38 > 0:40:40of those Alaskan peaks. And that puts it in perspective, because in
0:40:41 > 0:40:48Alaska you have huge amounts of soft snow. What Jeremie is doing is
0:40:49 > 0:40:52skiing steeper harder snow twice as fast. We have arrived at the end of
0:40:53 > 0:40:56the show, but we just have time for Ski Social. We asked you to send in
0:40:57 > 0:41:01your pictures, and you did in abundance. What we were not expected
0:41:02 > 0:41:05was the artwork, and I love these because I appeared to be having more
0:41:06 > 0:41:12fun than you. But look at the smile on my face, and I have obviously had
0:41:13 > 0:41:15a really big lunch! Photorealistic. You have also been sending in your
0:41:16 > 0:41:19videos as well, and it is great to see you starting your kids so young.
0:41:20 > 0:41:27Archie has clearly inherited the speed gene. And Ted appeared to have
0:41:28 > 0:41:32been inspired by last week's dry slope feature, he has gone DIY on
0:41:33 > 0:41:34us. Ten out of ten for creativity, keep sending us your photos and
0:41:35 > 0:41:40videos, and don't forget your questions. Does use the hashtag: The
0:41:41 > 0:41:44first question this week, a lot of people were confused by your, last
0:41:45 > 0:41:48week in the slalom that the coaches set the courses. A lot of people
0:41:49 > 0:41:51wondering if that is fair. If you had a standard course set like you
0:41:52 > 0:41:55having downhill, you would lose the progressive element of that
0:41:56 > 0:41:58discipline, so what happens is they take the top 15 skiers, the coaches
0:41:59 > 0:42:03are drawn at random at the beginning of the season, so if David Ryding
0:42:04 > 0:42:08keeps skiing well, we could have a British course set next season.
0:42:09 > 0:42:11Fantastic news. Sam wants to know how Deuchar von ice, he feels like
0:42:12 > 0:42:17he is just sliding. I feel a demonstration coming on.
0:42:18 > 0:42:23Three tips for you for carving on ice. Practical, technical and
0:42:24 > 0:42:27psychological. Make sure your edges are sharp enough, I do take your
0:42:28 > 0:42:32skis to the ski shop, or sharpen them yourself. Secondly,
0:42:33 > 0:42:37technically, make sure you are stood in the right position. Try to avoid
0:42:38 > 0:42:42too much pivot or steering movement with your ski. Thirdly,
0:42:43 > 0:42:47psychological. You have got to have faith that your skis are going to
0:42:48 > 0:42:53grip. You have to have faith to lean them over on an edge, otherwise they
0:42:54 > 0:42:57will not carve. Hopefully that has answered your
0:42:58 > 0:42:58question, Sam. I'm afraid that's all we've got time for this week. We
0:42:59 > 0:43:10will be back next week from kits COMMENTATOR: And he's gone! Oh, my
0:43:11 > 0:43:55word. Big moment. a free five-a-side tournament
0:43:56 > 0:44:08that's for everyone. For more information,
0:44:09 > 0:44:13go to the Get Inspired website.
