:00:52. > :00:58.Up here, surrounded by breathtaking landscape and the magic of the

:00:59. > :01:03.mountains, you're on top of the world looking down on a town steeped

:01:04. > :01:08.in winter sport history that has twice hosted the Olympic Games.

:01:09. > :01:13.COMMENTATOR: High above St Moritz, the torch marks the first meeting

:01:14. > :01:18.the world's Olympic athletes. It is preparing once more to welcome the

:01:19. > :01:23.fastest and most talented skiers on planet. This is St Moritz. In

:01:24. > :01:27.competition here, speed is a determining factor.

:01:28. > :01:35.COMMENTATOR: It's a Swiss racer in first. Feuz. The smallest of

:01:36. > :01:39.mistakes can make the difference between victory and loss.

:01:40. > :01:46.COMMENTATOR: The champion of the world. The pinnacle of ski racing

:01:47. > :01:49.are those who demand the best of themselves, constantly striving to

:01:50. > :01:55.go faster. COMMENTATOR: He's done it. He's the

:01:56. > :02:01.word champion. Pushing themselves to their absolute limit. And these

:02:02. > :02:05.marvellous yet challenging mountains will require their resilience and

:02:06. > :02:12.determination as they dream of finishing here on top of the world.

:02:13. > :02:18.Welcome to Ski Sunday. We're in Switzerland's glitziest resort, St

:02:19. > :02:22.Moritz, the birthplace of winter tourism for the biggest show of the

:02:23. > :02:25.alpine season. It is the World Championships. The town is packed

:02:26. > :02:29.with thousands of fans who've come to experience the thrill of watching

:02:30. > :02:33.the fastest ski racers in competition. If you're feeling the

:02:34. > :02:37.need for speed, today's show is for you. We've both of the blue riband

:02:38. > :02:41.events, the men's and women's's downhill races. In the men's

:02:42. > :02:49.competition it is too close to call it. Promising to be a thrilling

:02:50. > :02:56.race. In the women's Lindsey Vonn is making progress from her come back

:02:57. > :02:59.from injury Who ever wins either of these two downhill titles will write

:03:00. > :03:03.their names into the alpine skiing history books. Later in the show,

:03:04. > :03:09.Graham's teeming up with our armed forces to find out how they're using

:03:10. > :03:16.skiing to get the best out of their soldiers. First aid kit. Get him

:03:17. > :03:23.out, get him out, quick. It was no walk in the park. The The men's

:03:24. > :03:27.downhill on it is steeper than the infamous Stripe. It is truly

:03:28. > :03:30.terrifying. Before he takes it on himself is, Graham wanted to give

:03:31. > :03:38.you a taste of what the racers will see when they look down out of the

:03:39. > :03:42.start hut. The legendries Swiss downhill race Bernard Russi

:03:43. > :03:49.redesigned this course the last time St Moritz hosted the World

:03:50. > :03:54.Championships in 2003. The cable car stops halfway up. The racers have to

:03:55. > :04:01.climb this flight of stairs to the incredibly steep start section.

:04:02. > :04:06.Apparently Rusi had the idea when he was racing the Third World

:04:07. > :04:11.championships here in 1974, his visionfuls for a free fall start. If

:04:12. > :04:16.you have a look at it, it is quite incredible. 45 degrees, it's the

:04:17. > :04:23.steepest and fastest of all downhill starts in the world. By the time

:04:24. > :04:28.they reach this spot, the racers will have accelerated to 140 kmph in

:04:29. > :04:36.six seconds. There's plenty more meat lower down. Man-made features

:04:37. > :04:41.using natural terrain. The great thing about these man-made features

:04:42. > :04:45.is it is like a ski cross. This is called the Mauritius jump. Often the

:04:46. > :04:51.fastest line is also the most dangerous. You could lose count of

:04:52. > :04:55.the number of jumps on this course. For me, the toughest section is

:04:56. > :04:59.this. Felson. Very steep and technical. It is so important to

:05:00. > :05:05.carry the speed here to the finish. All in all, Bernard's done a great

:05:06. > :05:10.job. It's one of the most audacious start lines I've ever seen. I'm

:05:11. > :05:15.intrigued will it come down to maths and courage or is there a technical

:05:16. > :05:19.element? All of these guys have courage in abundance and a lot of

:05:20. > :05:23.mass. They spend a lot of time in the gym. The question is, who can

:05:24. > :05:31.take that speed and carry it out along the flats. Two years ago we'd

:05:32. > :05:37.a surprise winner in Patrick Kong. We've had a different winner in

:05:38. > :05:46.every World Cup downhill so far this season. We've the Italians. Dominik

:05:47. > :05:52.Paris won in kits very. Travis won in Garmis. And the Austrian's back

:05:53. > :06:01.as well. You have your eye on the Swiss? You would say it is beat

:06:02. > :06:06.Feuz. He is confident, he won the World Cup Finals here last year. It

:06:07. > :06:10.promises to be a highly competitive if not unpredibilitiable race.

:06:11. > :06:12.Here's a full taster of what the world's best will be facing. Rather

:06:13. > :06:51.you than me, Graham, it's all yours. We've seen what this free fall start

:06:52. > :07:00.looks like. This is what it feels like. It's like stepping into a we

:07:01. > :07:08.will lit elevator shaft. Absolutely flying from the moment you set off.

:07:09. > :07:16.Absolutely incredible feeling. You're going from 0-80 mph in just a

:07:17. > :07:21.few seconds. On to the banks, bumpy turn. We're approaching the first of

:07:22. > :07:30.these build-up man-made jumps. Will jump away a little bit to clear on

:07:31. > :07:33.to the flat. That was the Soretto. This is the Lanjiro. Over it. Just a

:07:34. > :07:47.fraction too high off that jump. Over the Mauritius. Now, we're going

:07:48. > :07:56.to tuck it out. Coming to the next jump. Didn't quite make the landing

:07:57. > :08:02.there. We're setting up for the tightest turns on the course. We're

:08:03. > :08:09.going into blind gate as you come over the rise. Then you dive down

:08:10. > :08:15.through this compression and over this other roller. That's the meat

:08:16. > :08:25.of the course. Really tough down through there. Two more jumps to go.

:08:26. > :08:33.Six in total. This is the Rollinger. A lovely little flight. Final jump,

:08:34. > :08:40.the La tricks kinsprung. Press forward. A high-speed course all

:08:41. > :08:48.right! Wow, really high-speed. Lots of air. From the start, it's just

:08:49. > :08:52.free fall. Brilliant. You said it resembled a ski cross course? All

:08:53. > :08:57.the jumps, I didn't have enough speed to make it. I had a real hard

:08:58. > :09:06.landing. Everything else is beautiful. Beautiful rollers if you

:09:07. > :09:09.attack it. It's note time for the running of the 2017 World

:09:10. > :09:13.Championships downhill. Matt Matt has the commentary. Conditions were

:09:14. > :09:18.clear this morning for the forerunners. A mid-mountain fog has

:09:19. > :09:23.swept in and the race organisers have decided to lower the start,

:09:24. > :09:27.depriving the racers and the crowd of the spectacular free fall course

:09:28. > :09:31.opening. But, we have a downhill. There's a huge crowd basking in

:09:32. > :09:39.sunshine in the finish area as we're set to get underway. Number 5,

:09:40. > :09:45.Dominik Paris, the winner of the down I will had, the toughest of

:09:46. > :09:50.them all on the 31st January. He's had solid results all season, in

:09:51. > :10:00.fact. Solid flight from Dominik Paris, the 27-year-old Italian. Now,

:10:01. > :10:05.the succession of high-flying spectacular rollers and ledges comes

:10:06. > :10:10.his way. One after the other. Having to straighten his legs. Push

:10:11. > :10:13.forward. Squash the jump, massive flight from Paris as he stands on

:10:14. > :10:21.that left ski to make the following turn. Flies again. Awkward on

:10:22. > :10:26.landing. 38 metres for the Frenchman. 99 kilometres per hour on

:10:27. > :10:34.landing. He's into the green zone now. Dominik Paris for Italy. He is

:10:35. > :10:42.fighting for top spot here. The Italian's on great form so far.

:10:43. > :10:50.1:20.95 for Paris. He's the quickest. So, pushes his arms

:10:51. > :10:56.forwards. Gets a nice early landing. One more turn and it's the finishing

:10:57. > :11:01.line waiting for Paris. Will he have gold medal position? Yes, he does!

:11:02. > :11:10.New leader in the men's World Championship downhill. It's

:11:11. > :11:17.high-flying Dominik Paris. Number 7 for Italy. Number 1 downhill racer

:11:18. > :11:23.of the season so far. Peter Fill. He hasn't won a race. Been second on

:11:24. > :11:29.two occasions. He's been third on one occasion. Fourth in kits very.

:11:30. > :11:32.Now he races. In the World Championship downhill. Nice jump

:11:33. > :11:41.from Peter Fill. He's in the green zone. In the early

:11:42. > :11:48.stages. Now he's going to have to fly. And fly again. It's good going

:11:49. > :11:53.so far from Peter Fill. Now, he'll thrust his arms forward here and

:11:54. > :11:57.wrap them behind his backside to maintain as much aerodynamic shape

:11:58. > :12:06.in flight. He's gone a slightly different line there. Wide of the

:12:07. > :12:13.blue line. And he flew 36 metres on take-off. Hand on the snow. That

:12:14. > :12:21.keeps him in first position. Green all the way for Fill of the hi.

:12:22. > :12:27.Italy. Another split coming up. Paris 1:20.95. Fill has lost a

:12:28. > :12:33.little. .17. Still green for the Italian. It could be an Italian

:12:34. > :12:39.one/two. Dominik Paris leads the way. Here comes his team-mate Peter

:12:40. > :12:43.Fill. Final jump, fill gets low and goes for the line and takes gold

:12:44. > :12:58.medal position. Fill is first for Italy. Pushing Paris to second. Feuz

:12:59. > :13:02.third for France. The 25-year-old Slovenian is away.

:13:03. > :13:13.Clean is notice green. -- clean is in the green.

:13:14. > :13:25.That jump, took is solidly. Kept himself nice and low. Anticipating

:13:26. > :13:31.every bump and jump. Getting better from Bostjan Kline. Having to react

:13:32. > :13:38.to the changes. He put the brakes on slightly. 34 metres of flight. Is he

:13:39. > :13:45.still in front? He's behind now. .05 behind. Very tight for Kline. The

:13:46. > :13:51.quality of downhill skiing on offer has been sensational. We are seeing

:13:52. > :13:57.men at the very top of their game putting down an astonishing feats of

:13:58. > :14:05.ski racing skill. Kline is fastest of the them all by four tenths. What

:14:06. > :14:12.a run from the Slovenian. He has the final jump to come. Lands solidly.

:14:13. > :14:23.Can Bostjan Kline go gold? He has. First position. Bostjan Kline leads.

:14:24. > :14:31.Jansrud. The winner of the World Cup race in Val d'Isere at the beginning

:14:32. > :14:39.of December. Big powerful stuff. Looking for maximum forward prop you

:14:40. > :14:44.wills. It's promising for Jansrud. Trails the shove of Slovenian by a

:14:45. > :14:48.tenth of a second. Now, non-stop succession of rollers, ledges and

:14:49. > :14:54.jumps to really test the overall skill of the downhiller. Long flight

:14:55. > :14:59.there. Stands on that left ski. Gets a little wide and lower in the line.

:15:00. > :15:03.Recovers. He's getting closer. 1 hundred wreath behind. Three red

:15:04. > :15:08.lights. Will he get a green at the next one? 13 metres of flight.

:15:09. > :15:13.Jansrud put the brakes on there. Kept it low. Kept the jump short.

:15:14. > :15:21.Switches on his first green light of this run. Run..32 in front.

:15:22. > :15:27.Norwegian's starting to anticipate something special here for Jansrud

:15:28. > :15:36.of Norway. Last Norwegian to win this title, 2013.

:15:37. > :15:47.It is going to be tight. Kline leads for Slovianskia. Jansrud takes it

:15:48. > :15:53.from him for Norway. 13 hundredth of a second, the lead changing time and

:15:54. > :15:59.time again. Jansrud into gold for Norway.

:16:00. > :16:04.One of the big favourites Jansrud takes the lead, he had an unusual

:16:05. > :16:08.line, he rolled too much in the air, to the right, landed, went straight

:16:09. > :16:12.down, had to correct at last minute. Back to the left and into that long

:16:13. > :16:17.right-hander again, it was. Will like he did a GS turn half way

:16:18. > :16:21.through the return but it got him back on line and he was able to

:16:22. > :16:27.carry that on the the steep section and clean in the air over the last

:16:28. > :16:36.two jumps. Here is the difending champion,

:16:37. > :16:46.wearing the white bib, he is the man that won this title. Two years ago.

:16:47. > :16:52.Kueng. Matching Jansrud turn for turn across the snow. It could come

:16:53. > :16:56.down to his skill in the air. Kept that one nice and tight. Just stood

:16:57. > :17:04.tall for a second and pays the price. 15 hundredths behind but not

:17:05. > :17:08.out of reach just yet. Patrick kueng with a slightly higher line there.

:17:09. > :17:14.That is the line that Peter Fill took into this section, winding down

:17:15. > :17:19.the windows Patrick Kueng and it has got away from him slightly. 16

:17:20. > :17:23.hundredths of a second off the pace, getting bounced around the course,

:17:24. > :17:28.cutting up as each racer puts their steel edges through the top surface

:17:29. > :17:33.of the snow. It's a little clumsy looking at times from Patrick Kueng,

:17:34. > :17:38.11 hundredths, he has clawed back a little bit of time. He might be in

:17:39. > :17:44.the hunt for a provisional podium position. As he takes a risk off the

:17:45. > :17:50.jump. Lands it, sets up for the next one. They are going crazy in the

:17:51. > :17:55.finish. As Patrick Kueng goes first equal. They couldn't split them at

:17:56. > :18:01.the top and Jansrud and Kueng are level. Sharing gold medal position

:18:02. > :18:07.right now. What a race! Patrick Kueng was tied

:18:08. > :18:12.with Jansrud on the first two splits. Splits. Went a bit behind as

:18:13. > :18:16.he took a different line, it was much too high on the left-hand side

:18:17. > :18:20.of the course, flapped in the air a couple of times and then his skis

:18:21. > :18:26.skidded into that right-hander, but made it up over the only ger jump

:18:27. > :18:34.and the Larkin to tie in the finish. Number 13.

:18:35. > :18:40.Fouad Feuz is ready to race. He was quickest in the training run. He is

:18:41. > :18:48.out on downhill day. The bronze medal list two years ago, first jump

:18:49. > :18:52.solidly landed. Feuz wraps the poles round his body and shapes himself as

:18:53. > :18:57.low as he dares for the next flight. Beautifully done. Lovely flight from

:18:58. > :19:02.Feuz and he has himself a green light for his efforts.

:19:03. > :19:09.Oh, what a jump there from Beat Feuz, he flew and flew and never

:19:10. > :19:14.ending flight and the line is nice and early now, for the Swiss

:19:15. > :19:20.downhill skier. 32 metres in the air, a little skid sideways but the

:19:21. > :19:28.speed is fantastic. Two tenth, Feuz gets a hand down. The big man is

:19:29. > :19:33.attacking the mountain in St Moritz, with a band this afternoon. Kueng

:19:34. > :19:38.and Jansrud are the joint leaders but they might be denied by Beat

:19:39. > :19:45.Feuz, who is leaving it all on the side of the mountain this afternoon.

:19:46. > :19:52.Brilliant flight again. Beat Feuz clocks 119.2 kilometres per hour,

:19:53. > :19:57.and tucks in, and takes gold medal position, Feuz into first, for

:19:58. > :20:07.Switzerland. Fantastic run. That is how to do it. Beat Feuz owned the

:20:08. > :20:12.lower section of this course, from the first jump he was faultless.

:20:13. > :20:15.Great line over that jump. Set him up to carry the speed through that

:20:16. > :20:27.compression right-hander, to the finish.

:20:28. > :20:40.Now Johan Clarey, this is solid from the Frenchman.

:20:41. > :20:45.Three greens all the way, he has the measure of the mountains so far. He

:20:46. > :20:49.is in the hunt for the medals Johan Clarey. If he can hold it together,

:20:50. > :20:58.that was a smooth flight, excellent landing. Left footed turn to follow

:20:59. > :21:06.was beautifully executed. 1.03.9. 1.04. He is down, he is out

:21:07. > :21:10.of the race. It looks innocuous enough as he thumps the snow in

:21:11. > :21:21.frustration, thankfully off his speed was extinguished before he

:21:22. > :21:27.arrive at the safety netting. Eric Guay is next to race for

:21:28. > :21:33.Canada. He is off and running. Looking for the golden double. Guay

:21:34. > :21:37.already the champion in the super-G last week.

:21:38. > :21:42.Green all the way for Erik Guay, nothing wrong with this so far, that

:21:43. > :21:49.is a good jump as well. Full control for Erik Guay. Still green for the

:21:50. > :21:53.Canadian, 8 hundredth in front of Beat Feuz, massive flight there for

:21:54. > :21:58.Guay. Slightly lower in the line, recovered well, didn't seem to cost

:21:59. > :22:07.him any speed. Upper body slightly twisted. Was that a sign that the

:22:08. > :22:13.brakes were applied? 1:03.9. Only just in the zone. Can't afford a

:22:14. > :22:24.mistake, has to be absolutely clean. From here, to the foot of the

:22:25. > :22:30.course. 120 flat. They are starting to celebrate that, the Swiss fans.

:22:31. > :22:39.Can Erik Guay just squeeze in among the medals? 120.9 through the final

:22:40. > :22:45.speed trap. Can he beat that? Silver for Guay. Erik Guay into second for

:22:46. > :22:51.Canada. What a run, what a week for Erik

:22:52. > :22:55.Guay. Erik Guay had a superb start, but then made a mistake, as he came

:22:56. > :23:00.round the long right-hander, set up for the wall, just as he disappeared

:23:01. > :23:04.out of view for a second you saw a ski flip away on him. He didn't

:23:05. > :23:13.carry the speed down so lost time on that section.

:23:14. > :23:17.Max Franz, 27-year-old Austrian who was in great on the downhill last

:23:18. > :23:20.month, before he lost a ski, and lost his chance to challenge for

:23:21. > :23:25.what was looking like a potential victory.

:23:26. > :23:28.And the Swiss are starting to get a little concerned, the atmosphere has

:23:29. > :23:32.changed slightly at the foot of the mountain as they have seen Max

:23:33. > :23:40.Franz's times come up. The jumps haven't been so clever for Max

:23:41. > :23:46.Franz, oh, he's flapping, and his knees are pumping in midair. Hasn't

:23:47. > :23:52.looked anywhere as comfortable some and another shaky landing. A inside

:23:53. > :23:56.of his full commitment to the course here, but 0.13 off the pace. That

:23:57. > :24:00.puts him in bronze medal position here, Max Franz. Can he hold it

:24:01. > :24:11.together, because there are plenty more jumps to come? Smoother there

:24:12. > :24:18.for Max Franz. Still skiing for bronze potentially. Oh, he's gone

:24:19. > :24:23.all freestyle. A little spread-eagle and his arms were all over the

:24:24. > :24:31.place. Max frands for Austria. Can he get it among the medals? He is

:24:32. > :24:36.into bronze. He snatches a bronze for ace that. The leader Beat Feuz

:24:37. > :24:42.had a terrible start, schoolboy error he kicked the wand over before

:24:43. > :24:48.he made his move to start so every racer is quicker on the top section.

:24:49. > :24:55.Franz was no exception but he made a mistake on the Rommi again, er jump.

:24:56. > :25:00.That is what cost him his race. -- Rommigeer. Beat Feuz is the champion

:25:01. > :25:04.of the world. A second medal for Erik Guay with silver today. Franz

:25:05. > :25:11.the best of the Austrians takes the bronze.

:25:12. > :25:15.The women's downhill is being contested on the historic course and

:25:16. > :25:20.as is customary in the build up to any of the women's speed events

:25:21. > :25:25.Lindsey Vonn has been the centre of attention. What can we expect from

:25:26. > :25:30.her? She made a fantastic recovery from the broken arm she suffered

:25:31. > :25:34.last November. Won her second race back in, but a week later she

:25:35. > :25:38.crashed out, and I think that crash is starting to play with her mind,

:25:39. > :25:42.and knocked her confidence slightly. And in training she hasn't looked

:25:43. > :25:45.that good. If she really nails one down she might end up on the podium

:25:46. > :25:51.but not for the win. One of the people who should have been able to

:25:52. > :25:54.take advantage was the home favourite but she has broken her

:25:55. > :26:00.cruciate ligament. Who does that leave? There are two women that have

:26:01. > :26:04.shining on this course. And it is Ilka Stuhec and Sofia Goggia, they

:26:05. > :26:10.both have incredibly contrasting styles, Stuhec is so clean, so

:26:11. > :26:14.smooth, you never see her make a mistake whereas Sofia Goggia likes

:26:15. > :26:19.to cut the taufrn, flailing off every jump like a mini Franz

:26:20. > :26:24.clamour. It promises to be an incredible spectacle. We are ready

:26:25. > :26:35.to run the 2017 women's World Championship downhill.

:26:36. > :26:43.Weirather away. Already a medallist from the World Championships. She

:26:44. > :26:52.took the silver in the super-G last week, looking to add to it. For

:26:53. > :26:57.Liechtenstein. Hugely popular, trains most of her time in

:26:58. > :27:03.Switzerland, with the Swiss team. So the Swiss fans see her pretty much

:27:04. > :27:09.as one of her own, and she is having a sensational run here. Tina

:27:10. > :27:15.Weirather. Long, controlled flight, perfect landing. Nearly half a

:27:16. > :27:20.second in front. Drifts slightly right. That big bank turn, on to the

:27:21. > :27:26.next. The final jump and we will have a new leader. Tina Weirather,

:27:27. > :27:34.into gold medal position, for Liechtenstein.

:27:35. > :27:42.Laurenne Ross is away for the US. A couple of ten results in the

:27:43. > :27:45.campaign so far, one hundredth of a second slower than Tina Weirather at

:27:46. > :27:50.the split. It is a promising start for Laurenne Ross of the US of

:27:51. > :27:58.America. Their big hope today of course Lindsey Vonn, who starts with

:27:59. > :28:04.number nine, Ross attacks the middle part of the course. And gets the

:28:05. > :28:10.green light for her efforts. 14 hundredths of a second faster than

:28:11. > :28:14.Weirather. Has to keep it clean here, getting bumped round, it is a

:28:15. > :28:22.challenging bottom section. No time to relax on this course, a massive

:28:23. > :28:29.flight there. 14 metres. 0.46 in front. The aggression may bring the

:28:30. > :28:32.rewards for Ross. Laurenne Ross skis for the lead in the World

:28:33. > :28:39.Championship downhill and gets its it by just under half a second. Ross

:28:40. > :28:43.into gold for the USA. Ready to race is Sofia Goggia. The

:28:44. > :28:50.Italian has had a superb season, and is renowned for her fearless skiing

:28:51. > :28:54.style. By contrast, she is a skier with a literary soul, and loves

:28:55. > :28:57.reading Shakespeare, when will we three meet again? On the podium of

:28:58. > :29:06.course. Sofia Goggia, ready to race for

:29:07. > :29:12.Italy. Couple of green lights. Early in this downhill for the Italian.

:29:13. > :29:15.Who has never won a World Cup race, but has come so close on so many

:29:16. > :29:22.occasions. And only knows one way to attack.

:29:23. > :29:26.That is full speed ahead. The exciting Sofia Goggia, taking

:29:27. > :29:32.risks on this World Championship downhill run. Has the reward so far,

:29:33. > :29:37.it is fast from the Italian, 0.37, quicker than the current leader

:29:38. > :29:41.Laurenne Ross, hand down. Super aggressive ski racing from Sofia

:29:42. > :29:46.Goggia, she is after one thing today, and that is the gold medal.

:29:47. > :29:52.0.37 in front. Perfect jump. Almost overcooked it. Landed on the tips of

:29:53. > :29:55.her skis but recovered well and now has a massive advantage, got her

:29:56. > :30:01.skis locked in together. She is struggling to stay on her feet. What

:30:02. > :30:06.a finish from Sofia Goggia, she has got the lead, yes. Two tenths of a

:30:07. > :30:17.second, lucky to finish at all, finishes in gold medal position.

:30:18. > :30:24.Stephanie Venier away for Austria. Venier, one of this young crop of

:30:25. > :30:33.aggressive Austrians who are hugely capable. She has the early

:30:34. > :30:40.advantage. .22 over Sofia gong ya. -- Goggia. Eke we will seventh is

:30:41. > :30:48.her best result in the current campaign. 1:02.44. Going yachlt

:30:49. > :30:53.Venier is faster by a tenth of a second. Remember, Sofia Goggia had

:30:54. > :30:59.three or four big errors on the final quarter of this run. If Venier

:31:00. > :31:03.keeps it clean, she might be able to steal gold medal position away from

:31:04. > :31:12.the Italian. 31 metres in flight. Goes into the red. But only just.

:31:13. > :31:20.Then drifts. It wasn't the ideal line off the final jump. Stephanie

:31:21. > :31:25.Venier tux in and goes first. New leader, the Austrian Stephanie

:31:26. > :31:30.Venier into gold. Next up is Ilka Stuhec who proved her pedigree with

:31:31. > :31:33.fine wins already this season. When she's not busy racing down the

:31:34. > :31:37.slopes, she enjoys trekking on horseback through the hills. Can she

:31:38. > :31:44.gallop to the finish in first place today? Now the World Cup downhill

:31:45. > :31:48.standings leader, the best downhiller of the season so far. The

:31:49. > :31:54.winner of three World Cup down hills. Did the double at the start

:31:55. > :32:00.of December. Backed it up with a win in Val d'Isere just before

:32:01. > :32:08.Christmas. It's green all the way for the Slovenian whose mum prepares

:32:09. > :32:12.her skis. .38. Still in front. Just a slight skid sideways. Look at how

:32:13. > :32:19.calm and relaxed she is over her skis. Goggia has been pushed into

:32:20. > :32:27.second. Venier leads for Austria. But for how much longer? Ilka Stuhec

:32:28. > :32:31.is on a roll here. Just into the red zone. Might be able to claw it back.

:32:32. > :32:37.Takes the final jump. Stands fractionally tall. Has she done

:32:38. > :32:43.enough? Yes.40. Stuhec's into gold for sleeve Ian ya. The best

:32:44. > :32:48.downhiller of the season leads the World Championship downhill. --

:32:49. > :32:53.Slovenia. Scombl Up next is Lindsey Vonn. She won her first World

:32:54. > :32:59.Championship downhill title back in 2009. She will be looking to repeat

:33:00. > :33:03.that success here. She's suffered a string of injuries but refuses to

:33:04. > :33:07.stop chasing history. Will she be the come back Queen here in St

:33:08. > :33:15.Moritz? Lindsey Vonn is ready to race in the World Championship

:33:16. > :33:19.downhill. Vonn.21 behind at the inter immediate. Since coming back

:33:20. > :33:31.from injury, she has registered victory. Vonn took the win in Garmis

:33:32. > :33:36.h on 21st January. Not going so well here for Lindsey Vonn this morning.

:33:37. > :33:40.She's a long way off the pace. It looks slightly cautious. No surprise

:33:41. > :33:46.when you think of all the injuries she's had in the past three or four

:33:47. > :33:49.seasons. .37 behind. Skiing potentially for third position.

:33:50. > :33:54.Let's see if she can make up that time on the final third of this

:33:55. > :34:03.downhill run? Vonn, the American, stands on that left ski. And gets a

:34:04. > :34:09.little closer to the time of Ilka Stuhec, our leader. Lindsey Vonn,

:34:10. > :34:17.such a good glider. Can she glide her way into gold medal postings?

:34:18. > :34:21.Vonn's gone third into bronze. Ilka Stuhec confirms her status as the

:34:22. > :34:28.world's best downhiller by taking gold in the World Championship.

:34:29. > :34:31.Lindsey Vonn taking the bronze for the United States. The World

:34:32. > :34:37.Championships continues this week with every medal race live on the

:34:38. > :34:43.red button, BBC Sport website and app and connected TV. The men ace

:34:44. > :34:48.alpine combined starts at 8.15 am. The action concludes on Sunday at

:34:49. > :34:53.8.35 am with the men's slalom which is our feature race next week on Ski

:34:54. > :34:59.Sunday. Elsewhere in winter sport, at the World Cup in quay he can

:35:00. > :35:05.Canada, Britain's Isabel Atkin made it to the final finishing in a

:35:06. > :35:09.respectable fifth place. Katie Ormerod has just come fourth in the

:35:10. > :35:17.slope style. Earlier this week at the Paris noble champs in Canada,

:35:18. > :35:23.Britain's Owen Pick and Ben Moore won in the slalom events. Moore

:35:24. > :35:28.Moore third in the SBUL. If you're enjoying any snow sport in an alpine

:35:29. > :35:34.environment, there will be elements of risk taking and physical

:35:35. > :35:38.exertion. Doesn't matter if you're going uphill or down, you'll be

:35:39. > :35:44.taking out of your comfort zone which means you need a hint of

:35:45. > :35:49.adventurous spirit. Graham travelled with our armed forces to find out

:35:50. > :35:54.why they're icing skiing to get the best out of our armed forces.

:35:55. > :35:58.Soldiers regular risk their lives for our country. The environments

:35:59. > :36:04.they work in don't usually require the ability to ski. Interestingly,

:36:05. > :36:06.the army are using this as part of their developmentment training for

:36:07. > :36:16.their servicemen and women. I've been invited to a base in

:36:17. > :36:22.Bavaria to see how it works. Unless I step out of line, thankfully,

:36:23. > :36:28.there won't be any combat involved. The Armed Forces add Sven rows

:36:29. > :36:34.training programme covers a range of activities such as rock climbing,

:36:35. > :36:38.mountaineering, as well as adaptive skiing for wounded or injured

:36:39. > :36:44.soldiers. From here, we'll cut right. We'll traverse up.

:36:45. > :36:50.Adventurous train something just another form of military, individual

:36:51. > :36:55.training. But we use this austere, extreme environment, to put an extra

:36:56. > :36:59.challenge in. There's an aspiration a third of our regiment will go away

:37:00. > :37:04.each year and do five days adventurous training. It is part of

:37:05. > :37:07.the offer which hopefully makes the army attractive to people wanting to

:37:08. > :37:12.join but it is a training measure that makes them better. It is about

:37:13. > :37:17.taking them out of their comfort zone, exposing them to risk in a

:37:18. > :37:22.controlled fashion. More likely do an avalanche scenario. It is

:37:23. > :37:27.enhanced self-awareness. If they have that, they make better

:37:28. > :37:29.decisions, they lead better and have a greater all-round ability to

:37:30. > :37:36.operate in the conditions we need them to.

:37:37. > :37:41.After a detailed briefing, it's time to head to the mountain. The plan is

:37:42. > :37:47.to tour to the peak and ski down through the back country. The

:37:48. > :37:51.reality is these soldiers may need to lead their teams in high pressure

:37:52. > :37:58.situations. They may never do their day job in the snow, but here,

:37:59. > :38:01.they're out of their comfort zone learning invaluable transferable

:38:02. > :38:05.skills. The emphasis is for them to lead the group in a risky and

:38:06. > :38:09.difficult environment What are the key things they're having to learn?

:38:10. > :38:15.As well as the technical aspects of skiing and to teach them skiing,

:38:16. > :38:21.safely travel in the mountains as well as off piste ski kit. Probes

:38:22. > :38:28.and companion rescue. There's aim on developmental skills. What are you

:38:29. > :38:33.doucheing in the decision making process in danger? Ski slopes and

:38:34. > :38:39.snow pack. Getting a feel for what's upped their feet. If they're leading

:38:40. > :38:43.a group of six people, to space out. We've steep aspects and ultimately

:38:44. > :38:50.make the right decision. Grab your maps. Work out where we are. Shall

:38:51. > :38:58.we have a change of route because of radiation on the south facing piste?

:38:59. > :39:03.Just changed from a southerly aspect to the shaded aspect. The snow's

:39:04. > :39:08.much colder, much safer travel for us. Out here, there's time to

:39:09. > :39:12.consider their decisions. Whilst on operations, these soldiers could

:39:13. > :39:20.face dangerous or life-threatening situations. How they radio act is

:39:21. > :39:29.vital. This training involves an of a an avalanche exercise. Let's go.

:39:30. > :39:38.First aid kit. Get him out, get him out quick! Any comments you'd make

:39:39. > :39:43.about this particular scenario? Started digging maybe slightly too

:39:44. > :39:47.close to where the casualty was. You can be quite often digging on top of

:39:48. > :39:52.somebody. It is much more effective to be digging downhill. That's why

:39:53. > :39:55.we practice these. The more times which practice it, the slicker and

:39:56. > :40:00.quicker they'll become as a team. The plan is to skin out this track

:40:01. > :40:13.here to the final bowl towards the top of the mountain.

:40:14. > :40:19.Ski touring may be scenic but it's exhausting. As we reach the top,

:40:20. > :40:20.it's another reminder of the physical condition required if you

:40:21. > :40:36.want to be an effective soldier. So we ski steep slopes one at a

:40:37. > :40:53.time. Got to have safe practice. I've done my fair share of off piste

:40:54. > :40:55.safety courses. It is interesting the Armed Forces deem the skills

:40:56. > :41:01.needed to be transferage to what they need. It's all about putting

:41:02. > :41:08.people into potentially hazardous environments so they can make the

:41:09. > :41:12.right decisions under pressure. It's fascinating to see how much snow

:41:13. > :41:15.sport can offer different people in different situations. Before we

:41:16. > :41:19.leave you, it's time for ski social. We always ask you to send in your

:41:20. > :41:27.photos and video. You never disappoint. This week, kicker have

:41:28. > :41:30.been a strong theme. Dominik caught nine-year-old fearless Millie

:41:31. > :41:38.perfectly in mid-air. We've one from Superman in the snow park. Nice

:41:39. > :41:43.cape! And fittingly, we've three-year-old Lillith who has her

:41:44. > :41:49.sights set on being the next Lindsey Vonn! Alongside your photos and

:41:50. > :41:55.videos, we need your questions. Send them in using the hashtag Ski

:41:56. > :41:58.Sunday. What is the coaches and racers discuss during course

:41:59. > :42:02.inspection? Mostly about the racing line. How much you can cut a turn

:42:03. > :42:05.off. Of course, if they get it wrong, the coaches can always get on

:42:06. > :42:10.their radios and make a course report after the first few skiers

:42:11. > :42:16.have raced. Another diamond from the human mind of alpine information.

:42:17. > :42:21.Ben also wants to know why do you grab your board? Where do the names

:42:22. > :42:26.for the grabs come from and how to do them in the snow park? To do

:42:27. > :42:30.this, I'll needs a snow park and snowboard. Follow me. There are

:42:31. > :42:35.three reasons to grab your board. It looks good, feels good and it shows

:42:36. > :42:40.you're in control. This is the mute grab. Front of hand to toe edge.

:42:41. > :42:44.Once you've got hold of your grab, you can tweak, bone and poke it in

:42:45. > :42:50.any direction. Just be sure to counter the movement with your

:42:51. > :42:56.trailing arm and upper body. Nose, roast beef, stale fish. Japan.

:42:57. > :43:04.They're all grabs. My favourite is the most iconic and stylish of them

:43:05. > :43:08.all, the method. How's that? More questions like that, please. Whilst

:43:09. > :43:14.you catch your breath, we've one final request. Next week is the last

:43:15. > :43:18.show of the series. It has become tradition, we want your suggestions

:43:19. > :43:23.of music for the closing montage. Your track could be the chosen one.

:43:24. > :43:27.Send in your suggestions using the hashtag Ski Sunday. We're sticking

:43:28. > :43:32.around here for the world champions is. We'll brings you more world

:43:33. > :43:42.class highlights, including Dave Ryding a slalom race. See you then.

:43:43. > :43:48.Out of the start lap and away. Krystof son is king of the hill.

:43:49. > :43:55.Dave, the rocket, his second. That's sensational. The first British racer

:43:56. > :44:01.on a World Cup podium since 1981.
