:00:53. > :01:00.Hello, and welcome to the programme, we are in St Moritz, where the

:01:01. > :01:04.Alpine skiing World Championships reaches its conclusion with the

:01:05. > :01:11.men's slalom. For the first time in a long time, we have a British skier

:01:12. > :01:16.with medal contention. Being a British ski racer feels like you are

:01:17. > :01:21.an out-of-town and you have walked into someone's local! The Swiss, the

:01:22. > :01:28.Austrians, the French, they look at you funny, you are a novelty to

:01:29. > :01:37.them. I've heard it before, so many times... " how can you be a ski

:01:38. > :01:43.racer on Alpine mountain is without any mountains in your country?"

:01:44. > :01:46.It breeds resilience, fight or flight! If you don't believe in

:01:47. > :02:03.yourself, no one else will! And there's nothing more satisfying

:02:04. > :02:17.than proving everyone wrong! COMMENTATOR: The day it all came

:02:18. > :02:19.right for Great Britain! COMMENTATOR: Alan Baxter wins the

:02:20. > :02:27.Olympic slalom bronze medal! COMMENTATOR: My goodness me, have we

:02:28. > :02:37.ever seen anything like that! It's no longer a novelty, Dave

:02:38. > :02:42.Ryding has earned the right to be taken seriously, and it will be no

:02:43. > :02:52.surprise to anyone if he places on the podium today. Of course, it's

:02:53. > :02:57.not just the British interest to look forward to, the two

:02:58. > :03:02.heavyweights of slalom, are set to do battle again, and it promises to

:03:03. > :03:05.be a stunning race between Henrik Kristoffersen and Marcel Hirscher.

:03:06. > :03:09.We will have a full round-up, and Jenny Jones has been meeting a young

:03:10. > :03:14.man doing his bit to prove that skiing and snowboarding is for

:03:15. > :03:17.everyone. No matter who you are or where you're from. I didn't know who

:03:18. > :03:21.I was, I was following the crowd, I wanted to find out who I was, I

:03:22. > :03:26.didn't know who I was, until I started skiing, I didn't have a

:03:27. > :03:28.clue. First, the men's slalom from the championship, we have been

:03:29. > :03:32.talking about Dave Ryding for a while but if we are honest, his

:03:33. > :03:37.progression has been even quicker than we expected. As he taken the

:03:38. > :03:48.European establishment by surprise? Graham went to take a closer look.

:03:49. > :03:50.-- has he taken. When Dave Ryding took his wealth World Cup podium,

:03:51. > :03:57.just a few weeks ago, the world of Alpine skiing took notice. It was

:03:58. > :04:03.not really a surprise, during the season he did very well. It was a

:04:04. > :04:11.surprise in your country rather than outside, he has the abilities.

:04:12. > :04:14.Austrian second, Dave Ryding, third, Russia, fourth, nobly would have

:04:15. > :04:20.thought that you could have a British guy and a Russian on the

:04:21. > :04:24.podium. But for me, it was very important for skiing. A change in

:04:25. > :04:31.Alpine skiing, not only big teams succeed also small team succeed with

:04:32. > :04:36.stop one-man team, one woman teams. The champion of the world. Dave

:04:37. > :04:39.Ryding's technique has caught the eye of Olympic gold medallist

:04:40. > :04:48.Bernard rootsy, he has been talking him up on Swiss television. Watch

:04:49. > :04:52.this guy, incredible how he skis, nobly else is so clean from the

:04:53. > :04:57.beginning until the end, without any mistakes, without any problems. He

:04:58. > :05:06.knows that by skiing down clean like he did so many times, he will be

:05:07. > :05:13.third. There is two who can go faster. If something happens, from

:05:14. > :05:16.Henrik Kristoffersen, from Marcel Hirscher, if they have problems,

:05:17. > :05:20.then he could be the world champion and he would be the greatest, in my

:05:21. > :05:32.opinion. I have come to the top of the mountain, to meet a man who

:05:33. > :05:40.knows a thing or two about slalom. COMMENTATOR: Gold medallist, Ingemar

:05:41. > :05:44.Stenmark of Sweden. I like his technique, I think that he can go

:05:45. > :05:48.even faster. He's never on the edge. He grew up racing on a dry slope,

:05:49. > :05:54.you came to the British artificial Championships. I was in Gloucester,

:05:55. > :06:01.but I did not race, I was scared of falling on the plastic! LAUGHTER

:06:02. > :06:05.What can we expect from Dave Ryding in the Olympics next year? I don't

:06:06. > :06:10.want to put too much pressure on him, but he can win... But, slalom

:06:11. > :06:17.is... It is difficult. There are many skiers who can win. A small

:06:18. > :06:21.mistake and then you are out. And this man knows what it is like to

:06:22. > :06:25.stand on top of the limping podium, Dave Ryding's recent form, along

:06:26. > :06:31.with his unconventional route to success, has earned the respect of

:06:32. > :06:36.the Swede. I have never tried a dry slope, that makes it even more

:06:37. > :06:41.impressive. He is going to be a dangerous contender for Olympic gold

:06:42. > :06:45.medal, so, staging. -- and the respect of the Norwegian. Consistent

:06:46. > :06:50.improvement over the last couple of years has shown that he is working

:06:51. > :06:53.hard, use very talented. All about progression, he won the Europa cup

:06:54. > :06:59.title four years ago, then the World Cup, scored a top 30, then top 15s,

:07:00. > :07:04.this season, he has blazed on the podium, if that continues, he is a

:07:05. > :07:10.definite medal prospect for a year's time. Back to today's racing, not

:07:11. > :07:13.just about day, a couple of other favourites. Henrik Kristoffersen and

:07:14. > :07:17.Marcel Hirscher, although anything can happen in slalom, Kristofferson

:07:18. > :07:21.crashed out in Kitzbuhel, where David had his great result, and

:07:22. > :07:26.Marcel Hirscher feels a lot of pressure in the World Championships.

:07:27. > :07:31.Alexander Rossi Roth could be one to watch out for. The Swiss have

:07:32. > :07:35.someone to cheer for, and it is an interesting background. Daniel

:07:36. > :07:39.Yuill, raced in the British Championships, Scottish parents. Can

:07:40. > :07:43.we claim in as one of our own? He signed for Switzerland, I don't know

:07:44. > :07:48.why, maybe something to do with... Hundreds of coaches, videos, the

:07:49. > :07:53.cars, the sponsors, the cheese...? The cheese alone would have done it

:07:54. > :07:57.for me! -- physios. The battle for the World Championships is about to

:07:58. > :08:01.begin, Matt has the best of the action from round one. On a course

:08:02. > :08:04.set by the Norwegian coach, everything looked set for Henrik

:08:05. > :08:09.Kristoffersen to lay down an early marker in round one. Skiing from bid

:08:10. > :08:14.three, he took the lead, but any convincing one, which did not last

:08:15. > :08:18.for long. Britain's Dave Ryding followed the Norwegian down and lay

:08:19. > :08:23.down a blistering run. -- but it was an unconvincing one. He took first

:08:24. > :08:26.position. Dave Ryding was justifiably satisfied with his

:08:27. > :08:30.morning 's work but the race lead would change hands again before

:08:31. > :08:34.long, slalom buzz number one this year, Marcel Hirscher, skiing in

:08:35. > :08:37.immaculate run, taking the lead by over half a second, followed into

:08:38. > :08:43.second and third by his Austrian team-mate, Marco Schwarz, and

:08:44. > :08:48.Michael Matt. Slalom Prodigy Manuel Feller was in seventh, Austrians are

:08:49. > :08:54.in a dominant position ahead of the second run. Matias Hagens skiing

:08:55. > :08:58.well, to take fifth place, and Russia's Alexander Khoroshilov is in

:08:59. > :09:02.charge of the top three, but is eight, going into round two. Lower

:09:03. > :09:06.down the field, the Swiss number one Daniel Yuill went 11, beaten by his

:09:07. > :09:10.team-mate, who finished ninth. Germany are without a medal from

:09:11. > :09:16.these championships, that run does not look set to end, with Felix

:09:17. > :09:20.Neureuther propping up the top ten. French racer Aleksei pans along

:09:21. > :09:24.would have been considered a prerace contender but failed to make it to

:09:25. > :09:30.the finish, he made it further than Sebastien Hummer not the ideal way

:09:31. > :09:35.to lead the World Championships. -- leave. All to play for, the top of

:09:36. > :09:39.the field is tightly packed, only a second is covering the fastest 14.

:09:40. > :09:43.-- Alexis Pinturault. Dave Ryding is handily placed in fourth, hoping to

:09:44. > :09:47.break the Austrian stranglehold on the podium positions, and secure a

:09:48. > :10:01.historic World Championship medal. Andre Myhrer, this is M has spent

:10:02. > :10:04.a chunk of the season with injury. Let's see what he can produce,

:10:05. > :10:10.Olympic bronze medallist in Whistler, in 2010, high arm, boxing

:10:11. > :10:15.the spring-loaded gates out of the way, effective technique, adding to

:10:16. > :10:23.his lead, by nearly half a second now. Jumping ever so slightly on the

:10:24. > :10:29.steep part of the course. Unusual technique. Dropping the inside hand,

:10:30. > :10:34.touching the slalom, picking it right back up, to hit the gate away,

:10:35. > :10:38.sometimes that increases the rotation on his hips, difficult to

:10:39. > :10:44.control the lower part of the body. He has only one hundredth in

:10:45. > :10:50.reserve, forcing his way across the line. And gets it, asked finish from

:10:51. > :10:54.Andre Moorer. The Swedes takes the gold medal position. -- Andre

:10:55. > :10:59.Myhrer. They still have Matias Hagen to come. Good run from the Swede,

:11:00. > :11:01.you can see the high arm carriage, both hands in front, as he goes

:11:02. > :11:14.through. Stefano Gross, 14th after the first

:11:15. > :11:18.run, on his way, a little weight, because of the technical time-out,

:11:19. > :11:23.comes charging onto the flat, I wonder if he was pushing a fraction

:11:24. > :11:27.too hard, 58.2 to for Andre Myhrer, Stefano Gross has pushed a little

:11:28. > :11:31.too furiously out of the start heart. Just a little stumble in the

:11:32. > :11:36.first couple of dates and that has cost in his speed. Under the first

:11:37. > :11:40.initial flat. -- a little wait. Lovely skier to watch when he is on

:11:41. > :11:45.great form, so fluid, great upper body, lower body separation. What,

:11:46. > :11:50.does not quite have the timing today, to get the skis divide,

:11:51. > :11:55.having problems, generating the same acceleration that he normally would.

:11:56. > :11:59.It is going to be tight, Andre Myhrer leads for Sweden, Stefano

:12:00. > :12:04.Gross will push him every step of the way, and go second, three

:12:05. > :12:08.tenths, relief, path of the cheeks from Andre Myhrer, he stays in the

:12:09. > :12:16.leaders area. Stefano Gross into second for the moment. VOICEOVER:

:12:17. > :12:21.Daniel Yuill, the Swiss number one loves the hill, taking the first run

:12:22. > :12:25.before finishing 11, he skis for pleasure as well as World Cup

:12:26. > :12:33.points, and he loves a powder turn. -- Daniel Yule. Can he get his face

:12:34. > :12:37.up on the podium today? COMMENTATOR: Daniel Yule for Switzerland, 11

:12:38. > :12:40.after the first run, getting towards the fastest men after the first late

:12:41. > :12:45.this morning, and Daniel Yule, Scottish heritage, racing for

:12:46. > :12:53.Switzerland, 11 hundredths, his advantage at the split, he is out.

:12:54. > :12:57.Caught on the inside ski, could not get out of the turn. As he went into

:12:58. > :13:05.the right footed turn. Set him up on the inside ski. Daniel Yule is out.

:13:06. > :13:08.Ready to race, Felix Neureuther, popular German has half a million

:13:09. > :13:14.followers on Facebook, and fans across all ages. VOICEOVER: When not

:13:15. > :13:21.impressing with his slalom skills, new wells them with his dance moves.

:13:22. > :13:28.-- he wows them with his dance moves. Can Felix walks to victory

:13:29. > :13:32.and be dancing on the podium today? COMMENTATOR: The turn of Felix

:13:33. > :13:36.Neureuther, huge amount of pressure on his shoulders, Germany without a

:13:37. > :13:40.medal from the Championships. Felix Neureuther, tense after the first

:13:41. > :13:47.run. Sykes himself up. And off he goes. Felix Neureuther, rattling

:13:48. > :13:52.through the first U-turns, 0.36 the advantage with which he starts this

:13:53. > :13:55.second run, that remains intact will stop expect fireworks, new knows

:13:56. > :14:00.that he is in touch, a good run could move him up into medal

:14:01. > :14:03.contention. CO-COMMENTATOR: Great skiing, uncharacteristic mistakes on

:14:04. > :14:07.this part of the cause in the first run but that's good, the German

:14:08. > :14:14.absolutely flying in the second run. Silver medallist in 2013, took the

:14:15. > :14:19.bronze in Beaver Creek, two years ago, is it still... It is! Up a

:14:20. > :14:25.second, that is the advantage that Felix Neureuther brings with him,

:14:26. > :14:30.into these final U-turns on the flat, skiing for gold medal position

:14:31. > :14:35.for Germany, and gets there, by 17 hundredths of a second. Felix

:14:36. > :14:40.Neureuther, lost a fraction of his lead in the very last section of the

:14:41. > :14:44.course, almost ran out of steam ever so slightly, but that could be good

:14:45. > :14:50.enough to put him on the podium. So tight from here until second place

:14:51. > :14:53.and then, the four tenths of a second lead for Marcel Hirscher.

:14:54. > :15:00.Last of the Swiss now, Ramon Sennheiser and, ninth after the

:15:01. > :15:07.first run. With bid number 23, remarkable first run for the Swiss,

:15:08. > :15:13.tall and lanky, deceptively quick... -- Ramon Zenhausern. Standing little

:15:14. > :15:17.backwards on his skis, extraordinary start, but he has more than doubled

:15:18. > :15:23.his lead coming into the state. Not the skier that you necessarily want

:15:24. > :15:29.to watch if you are a young racer! His technique is kind of his own,

:15:30. > :15:34.shall we say. Late there, that has got to have cost and time. He has

:15:35. > :15:41.played eight of his nine lives, he will not be challenging for a medal

:15:42. > :15:42.now. Gives it up, how frustrating. Holds his hands very low, there is

:15:43. > :15:53.the straddle, he has to stop. VOICEOVER: In the start, Alexander

:15:54. > :15:56.Khoroshilov, the Russian enjoying another consistent season on the

:15:57. > :16:00.World Cup, training with Dave Ryding of Britain. He celebrated his 33rd

:16:01. > :16:04.birthday this week, his team-mate vulnerable dented him with a special

:16:05. > :16:08.week as a present... Will he have the skills to pay the bills today,

:16:09. > :16:14.or will he be left tearing his hair out in St Moritz? -- special wig.

:16:15. > :16:24.Next to go, Alexander Khoroshilov of Russia. Training partner of Dave

:16:25. > :16:33.Ryding. He is storming through these first few turns on the flat. That's

:16:34. > :16:38.a furious start from Khoroshilov. His lead is maintained as he hits

:16:39. > :16:42.the steep now. He is high on the racing line. Letting the skis run

:16:43. > :16:49.and carrying the speed out onto this little flat section. Just lost a few

:16:50. > :16:55.tenths of a second. The 33-year-old Russian. Good results this season.

:16:56. > :17:05.Finish third in the race in which Dave Ryding finished second. He's

:17:06. > :17:12.got a little bit of work to do here. Heat charges the last few turns and

:17:13. > :17:21.goes second. The Russian coach is happy with that and Khoroshilov is

:17:22. > :17:28.into silver now. There is Dave Ryding, keeping his boots cold.

:17:29. > :17:38.Seven men left to race. Manuel Feller is next. Feller, on his way.

:17:39. > :17:43.This could be interesting. A really wild technique with the upper body,

:17:44. > :17:48.lots of hip movement as well. Really interesting to see. He's using that

:17:49. > :17:52.to generate the power now. The question with Feller is, how many

:17:53. > :17:56.mistakes will he make? When he's fast Kameni is very fast, but he

:17:57. > :18:04.tends to make some mistakes on his run. That remains green, 0.20. He

:18:05. > :18:08.hasn't really made any noticeable mistakes yet. One little stumble

:18:09. > :18:11.sideways, and he is a bit more sketchy as he crosses the next

:18:12. > :18:19.intermediate and puts himself 100th of a second behind Felix Neureuther.

:18:20. > :18:26.Can Manuel Feller charge in front of Felix Neureuther here? Yes he can,

:18:27. > :18:31.by a quarter of a second. It's a gold for Austria and they have still

:18:32. > :18:38.got three men to come. Great skiing from Manuel Feller. Just one ever so

:18:39. > :18:42.slight mistake where he rotated just before the third intermediate, but

:18:43. > :18:45.what a technique. Skis quite close together and produces this rotation

:18:46. > :18:50.with his upper body, but his lower body has to cancel that rotation

:18:51. > :18:54.out, so there is a lot of twisting movement trying to separate what his

:18:55. > :19:01.legs are doing from what his arms are doing, which is springing around

:19:02. > :19:05.and flailing at the gates. In the start-up is Henrik Kristoffersen.

:19:06. > :19:09.The Norwegian is breaking ski racing records left right and centre and is

:19:10. > :19:15.a start back home, being nominated for awards and appearing on TV

:19:16. > :19:21.shows. He's even design his own logo, imaginatively going with his

:19:22. > :19:25.initials. Will he be crowned WC, or world champion, today?

:19:26. > :19:31.Next to go, Henrik Kristoffersen, the incredibly talented 22-year-old

:19:32. > :19:35.Norwegian. He is off and charging. Two hundredths of a second, that's

:19:36. > :19:40.all he's got over Manuel Feller after the first run. He's not

:19:41. > :19:43.holding back anything here, Henrik Kristoffersen, as he rapidly arrives

:19:44. > :19:51.at the first intermediate, he is behind Feller by 2 cents -- two

:19:52. > :19:56.tenths of a second and he is behind Felix Neureuther -- Manuel Feller.

:19:57. > :20:01.There is more offset between the gates on the second run so it should

:20:02. > :20:04.suit him, but this course is not what the Norwegian wanted, going

:20:05. > :20:07.into the World Championships. He wants it steep and more difficult.

:20:08. > :20:15.Now he's trying to generate some speed. Fourth in the giant slalom,

:20:16. > :20:19.just missed a medal there. He has won five slalom races this season.

:20:20. > :20:24.Can he denied Manuel Feller? I don't think so. He has gone third, pushing

:20:25. > :20:31.Alexander Khoroshilov out of the medal positions. Those late turns

:20:32. > :20:35.that we saw from Kristoffersen on the speed, uncharacteristically

:20:36. > :20:42.making mistakes. Dave Ryding stepping into his skis. The biggest

:20:43. > :20:46.moment of his career coming up. Matthias Haagen steps forward, the

:20:47. > :20:50.Swede. His advantage over Manuel Feller is a tenth of a second and he

:20:51. > :20:59.is charging out of the starting heart here, a tragic year for him,

:21:00. > :21:03.he lost his wife, and extreme skier, in South America last summer in an

:21:04. > :21:10.avalanche. Just a little late as he went on to

:21:11. > :21:18.the steep and it could cost him at this next intermediate time, it

:21:19. > :21:23.hasn't! Hagen Is still good. Great run he skis with his skis very close

:21:24. > :21:30.together which allows him to take a tight line. He's giving this

:21:31. > :21:37.absolutely everything he's got, and he's out! Just on that final little

:21:38. > :21:47.roller, Matthias Haagen was risking absolutely everything. No risk, no

:21:48. > :21:51.reward, in slalom. Feller leads, not a

:21:52. > :21:58.-- Felix Neureuther in seconds. It's time for the rocket man, Dave

:21:59. > :22:03.Ryding, fourth after the first run, the 30-year-old, who learned to

:22:04. > :22:09.sleep acrobatic space ski on the plastic slope of Pendle in

:22:10. > :22:12.Lancashire. He had a fantastic first run. 1400s of sacking, that is the

:22:13. > :22:16.advantage he brings with him the second run over Manuel Feller.

:22:17. > :22:20.Didn't quite have the timing that he had on the first run in that flat

:22:21. > :22:24.section of the course. Timing is absolutely everything for generating

:22:25. > :22:30.the speed, and Ryding is clean but not quite as fast as the current

:22:31. > :22:35.leader, Manuel Feller, 0.26 at the moment between first and second

:22:36. > :22:41.position and Ryding is struggling here. 0.27 behind. He needs to find

:22:42. > :22:45.some acceleration, this next transition from the steep here onto

:22:46. > :22:50.the flat is Kiefer Dave Ryding. The British number one, can he get in

:22:51. > :22:57.amongst the medals? -- is key for Dave Ryding. Just didn't have the

:22:58. > :23:01.same timing and clean skiing that he had on the first run. Lost a lot of

:23:02. > :23:06.time on that first section. Normally Dave Ryding would be very good at

:23:07. > :23:15.carrying speed from the steep onto the flat. 26 to go and they are all

:23:16. > :23:20.Austrian. They are up -- six to go. We're going to have an Austrian

:23:21. > :23:27.gold. The resemblance to his brother Mario is obvious. Michael has

:23:28. > :23:30.stepped it up this year with some spec -- some sensational slalom

:23:31. > :23:36.skiing in the first run this year. Michael Matt is in contention. Mario

:23:37. > :23:39.Matt was one of the inventors of the new slalom technique with the skis

:23:40. > :23:45.shortened and the radius of the Skeete tight end. Stooping low, used

:23:46. > :23:49.to ski with the skis very wide apart to control the acceleration. Michael

:23:50. > :23:56.Matt now with a narrow stance but the same hunched over technique.

:23:57. > :23:59.Michael Matt trails by 11 hundredths of a second, he's managed to find a

:24:00. > :24:07.tenth between intermediate number two and split number three. He's

:24:08. > :24:14.down in sixth place and that means that Feller is guaranteed a medal,

:24:15. > :24:20.with just two to come. Feller leads the way, two Austrians to come, will

:24:21. > :24:26.the clean sweep happen for the big alpine ski racing nation now? Number

:24:27. > :24:30.ten, Marco Schwarz. Second after the first run. He brings with him a lead

:24:31. > :24:35.of a quarter of a second over team-mate Manuel Feller into this

:24:36. > :24:40.second run. Marco Schwarz at the first intermediate. His advantage

:24:41. > :24:43.has been sliced in half and just cut the turn off going on to the steep,

:24:44. > :24:50.so he didn't come on with much direction. Feet close together,

:24:51. > :25:01.controlling that upper body. Good core strength from Marco Schwarz. He

:25:02. > :25:05.might be able to claw some of the time back... It hasn't changed much

:25:06. > :25:08.but it is still red Fort Marco Schwarz and I think Manuel Feller

:25:09. > :25:14.might be dreaming of a silver medal now at least, as Marco Schwarz

:25:15. > :25:19.pushes hard for the line and goes sixth! Felix Neureuther has got a

:25:20. > :25:25.medal and Germany are off the mark, finally they get some reward and

:25:26. > :25:33.Feller can finish no worse than silver. The Austrian clean sweep

:25:34. > :25:39.will not happen. So, Feller leads and Felix Neureuther is second,

:25:40. > :25:42.Henrik Kristoffersen is on the cusp, in bronze medal decision. One man to

:25:43. > :25:52.come and it is of course the World War I, Marcel Hirscher. I fully

:25:53. > :25:56.expect Hirscher to ski 100% on this second run. He knows there is only

:25:57. > :26:03.one way to ski slalom and that is all-out attack. Which Austrian will

:26:04. > :26:09.win gold? Will it be this one or the one at the top? Of course, Hirscher

:26:10. > :26:13.doesn't drain with the rest of the Austrian team committee trains on

:26:14. > :26:17.his own. He's all they said he wants this young Austrian team to come

:26:18. > :26:21.through and start pushing him on the World Cup. They've done it today.

:26:22. > :26:24.He's moved from the leaders in close to take his position in the winner

:26:25. > :26:32.'s area. Marcel Hirscher has the lead after the first run and his

:26:33. > :26:37.advantage is 0.6 seven. Classic textbook, as predicted. Hirscher on

:26:38. > :26:43.the charge and he is already adding time to that lead. Brilliant skiing

:26:44. > :26:47.from Marcel Hirscher, so lean, so far from behind on the turns, he can

:26:48. > :26:52.generate speed and acceleration at will down the slope. Getting even

:26:53. > :26:56.better for Marcel Hirscher! You looks so calm and relaxed over his

:26:57. > :27:02.skis, it's almost like a training run for Marcel Hirscher. He's

:27:03. > :27:09.ripping it up, here. 0.70. He can still afford a mistake and go on and

:27:10. > :27:16.claim the gold. Not since 1996 when Alberto Tomba won both has anyone

:27:17. > :27:24.done the double but he has done it now, the golden double for Marcel

:27:25. > :27:28.Hirscher! He won the GS last week and now he's taken the slalom title.

:27:29. > :27:33.Absolutely brief from Marcel Hirscher. When he's on form and on

:27:34. > :27:39.fire, he is unstoppable. That second run, remember the course is cutting

:27:40. > :27:44.up with every skier down and Hirscher able to generate such power

:27:45. > :27:49.and clean turns. His great mate, Felix Neureuther, is there to

:27:50. > :27:55.congratulate him, and his team-mate Manuel Feller. He has destroyed the

:27:56. > :28:03.rest of the field today to reclaim the title he won in 2013 and to

:28:04. > :28:09.snatch his second gold, here in St Moritz. It is perfect the sun is

:28:10. > :28:13.shining, great conditions today. The skiing was as well pretty good.

:28:14. > :28:18.Austria is pretty stoked with another two on the podium. Thank you

:28:19. > :28:23.to an amazing crowd, have a nice Sunday and they safe trip home.

:28:24. > :28:31.Confirmation of victory for Marcel Hirscher, he takes the gold ahead of

:28:32. > :28:35.Manuel Feller and Felix Neureuther takes the bronze for Germany. Great

:28:36. > :28:39.Britain's Dave Ryding ultimately finished in 11th. St Moritz has seen

:28:40. > :28:42.some great racing here at the World Championships and we've covered it

:28:43. > :28:45.live on the red button, but if you've missed anything, here's our

:28:46. > :28:47.Graham with a quick reminder of the best of the action.

:28:48. > :28:55.With a World Championships in town, all signs led to St Moritz, a place

:28:56. > :29:02.rich in alpine history, ready for a new chapter to be written with two

:29:03. > :29:11.weeks of racing. The festival began with the Super G and high hopes for

:29:12. > :29:17.the poster girl. She goes second! Mikel gets it by a third of a

:29:18. > :29:33.-- Nicole. Beads to gold by her Austria -- Austrian rival, ouch.

:29:34. > :29:46.The 21st-century reincarnation of the crazy pair upset the form books.

:29:47. > :29:52.The victory was not a complete surprise but these shock bronze left

:29:53. > :29:55.St Moritz reverberating, much like the crash barriers in the finishing

:29:56. > :30:00.area! COMMENTATOR: Brilliant. The

:30:01. > :30:05.championships were up and running and all signs pointed towards more

:30:06. > :30:10.great racing to come. Up next, the Alpine combined, downhill and

:30:11. > :30:14.slalom, to crown the world's best all-rounder. Fears that the Swiss

:30:15. > :30:18.challenge was ending intensified with this season-ending injury. The

:30:19. > :30:25.home nation weren't feeling sorry for themselves for long. Wendy is

:30:26. > :30:30.the combined champion of the world! Switzerland have their first gold.

:30:31. > :30:38.Further home success followed in the men's race. Switzerland have two

:30:39. > :30:44.more medals. Luca is the world combined champion. The Swiss were on

:30:45. > :30:50.a roll. Could they maintain the momentum in the blue-ribbon events?

:30:51. > :30:54.The signs were looking good for the man who won here last year and had

:30:55. > :30:58.the luxury of behind closed doors practice runs before the

:30:59. > :31:03.championships. The big man is attacking the mountain in St Moritz

:31:04. > :31:07.'s! With the stands packed to cheer him home, he didn't let them down.

:31:08. > :31:15.Tucks in and takes gold medal position! First full Switzerland.

:31:16. > :31:21.The women's downhill was a thrilling battle from start to finish. Sophia

:31:22. > :31:24.took the lead but her expression in the finish area said it all. The

:31:25. > :31:30.Italian knew she wouldn't be on top for long. Gold was living. The best

:31:31. > :31:34.downhill rider of the season leads the World Championship downhill.

:31:35. > :31:38.Lindsey von may be the greatest of all time but the Americans seemed

:31:39. > :31:43.unusually unsure of herself in St Moritz. Bronze for her and a smile,

:31:44. > :31:49.but not the middle she likes to deal in. smile, but for most, however, a

:31:50. > :31:52.medal of any colour is not to be overlooked, redemption, in giant

:31:53. > :32:05.slalom bronze, after downhill disappointment. Gold went to Tessa

:32:06. > :32:11.Worley. Austria took a 1-2, with Marcel Hirscher taking the first

:32:12. > :32:14.gold medal of this Championships and his first ever in GS. The

:32:15. > :32:20.Championships concluded as always with the slaloms, in the women's

:32:21. > :32:42.face, the signs were pointing overwhelmingly to retains

:32:43. > :32:55.title for Mikaela Shiffrin. A glut of Swiss gold, the host nations are

:32:56. > :32:58.breaking. -- the host nation celebrating. This may be the last

:32:59. > :33:03.Ski Sunday of the series but the winter sport continues on BBC Sport

:33:04. > :33:06.with Scott fridge of the skeleton bobsleigh championships, watch the

:33:07. > :33:16.men's skeleton on Friday morning on the red button, and unconnected TV.

:33:17. > :33:18.-- with skeleton bobsleigh. And the ski and snowboard world freestyle

:33:19. > :33:25.championships from Sierra, Nevada, next month, Team GB sending a strong

:33:26. > :33:33.squad and it promises to be a strong competition.

:33:34. > :33:38.We all know that skiing and snowboarding have a reputation for

:33:39. > :33:42.exclusivity, but we wanted to show you that this does not have to be

:33:43. > :33:47.the case. Jenny Jones has been out to prove it. You may not think that

:33:48. > :33:51.this is the place to come to show that snow sport is not just for the

:33:52. > :34:01.privileged and wealthy, but bear with me. I am here in Verbier, to

:34:02. > :34:04.meet a ski instructor in one of the poshest results in Europe but it

:34:05. > :34:13.could not be more different from where he was just a couple of years

:34:14. > :34:16.ago. Let's do this. It's crazy, absolute crazy, to think that three

:34:17. > :34:20.and a half years ago, I had never put skis on, had never thought about

:34:21. > :34:33.skiing before, it was not available for me. This is where I grew up.

:34:34. > :34:40.School was not great. My dad, he left us. Everything was a bit

:34:41. > :34:44.downhill. I did not know who I was so I was following the crowd, I was

:34:45. > :34:46.just trying to fit in to something, I did not know what I was fitting

:34:47. > :34:49.into, it was a bit of a strange one. # "Fix Up, Look Sharp" - Dizzee

:34:50. > :34:59.Rascal. I was wanted to show that I was the

:35:00. > :35:03.big man, I wanted to show that I was a call big person, I was just trying

:35:04. > :35:06.to find out who I was, I did not know who I was, until I started

:35:07. > :35:16.skiing I did not have a clue who I was. -- cool, big person. -- I

:35:17. > :35:23.always wanted to show that I was the big man. I got myself into a lot of

:35:24. > :35:26.trouble. When he was about 15, 16, I was worried, because I felt he

:35:27. > :35:31.didn't know where he was going. At that age, he didn't want to listen

:35:32. > :35:36.to what I had to say, because it is the age where they know best. All

:35:37. > :35:42.this is going on, then he got introduced to snow camp. Yes, he

:35:43. > :35:45.did, the way it first happened, I was watching something on TV, they

:35:46. > :35:51.were in central London, they had been doing a bit of a promotion. And

:35:52. > :35:55.I thought, wow, he would love that. The away seem to be skating. It is

:35:56. > :36:00.something I've never been able to introduce him to. We did some

:36:01. > :36:04.research, it was a weekend, I took him to the station, you were

:36:05. > :36:09.apprehensive, wasn't you. What did you think? I was going to say... We

:36:10. > :36:14.pulled up and he said, why have you put me on this, why did you even

:36:15. > :36:18.arrange this! I said, go for today, just go for today and if you don't

:36:19. > :36:24.like it, don't have to go back again but give it a go. He loved it... He

:36:25. > :36:29.said, amazing. I said, are you going back tomorrow. He said, yes, I will

:36:30. > :36:31.go back tomorrow. I never dreamt this would happen, never dreamt this

:36:32. > :36:43.would come out of this moment. So, here we are, exactly where you

:36:44. > :36:47.first started. I walked in, and the first thing I thought, it's freezing

:36:48. > :36:51.cold, actually freezing cold! To step on the snow and how slippery it

:36:52. > :36:56.was, completely out of my comfort zone! A bit daunting at first. What

:36:57. > :37:00.they do here, they are a youth charity helping underprivileged

:37:01. > :37:04.young people get into snow sport, perfect candidate, I had never seen

:37:05. > :37:08.snow, had never thought to put skis on. And then snow camp offered you

:37:09. > :37:12.an apprenticeship. That's right, the way that the scheme works, you get

:37:13. > :37:17.the work placement within the snow industry, you get to see how it

:37:18. > :37:21.works, insight into what the world is that you're going into, that for

:37:22. > :37:25.me was amazing. What doors has it opened in terms of getting out of

:37:26. > :37:27.the mountains? Through the apprenticeship I am now

:37:28. > :37:32.internationally qualified as a ski coach, working my way up. Just

:37:33. > :37:37.through that one day of saying, you know what, ma'am, maybe I'm going to

:37:38. > :37:41.go... It has completely changed my life. -- you know what, mum. Who

:37:42. > :37:45.would know that I would ever be able to come to a place like this, get on

:37:46. > :37:48.a plane, into the mountains, get straight to it. That is the point

:37:49. > :37:55.when I knew, this is the life for me. Really nice, seriously, really

:37:56. > :37:59.nice! Really smooth, really control, keep it up.

:38:00. > :38:06.That had a lot more flow. Do you think he is out of his comfort zone?

:38:07. > :38:10.People buying a lot for this ski instruction and to have a good

:38:11. > :38:15.holiday but actorly you look so relaxed, very confident, enjoying

:38:16. > :38:19.himself, you might think he was out of his comfort zone, but not. The

:38:20. > :38:23.coaching sessions? It's crazy, it's not just a different area and a

:38:24. > :38:26.different place, it's completely different people, different

:38:27. > :38:30.upbringing, background to what I have had. I have had to learn a lot

:38:31. > :38:34.about myself to interact with it. If I was the same person I was three

:38:35. > :38:38.years ago, I would not fit here, I have had to change and grow. To be

:38:39. > :38:42.here is enough, I want to swallow everything, and become the best I

:38:43. > :38:47.can be. I would love to be able to go back to my borough and give back

:38:48. > :38:51.and change summary is's life, and do what snow camp have done for me,

:38:52. > :38:56.literally given me the opportunity to be here, you know. -- Snow Camp.

:38:57. > :39:00.And build a career for myself. Look at this amazing place, and just

:39:01. > :39:05.standing here, with half the people that do come skiing every year, is

:39:06. > :39:12.amazing. On paper, I shouldn't be here, you know? What Snow Camp do is

:39:13. > :39:16.so in spiralling, both Graham and I work with them and time and again we

:39:17. > :39:20.see how the sport we love can change lives are the better. -- is

:39:21. > :39:23.inspiring. Get out there and give it a go, hundreds of slopes all over

:39:24. > :39:28.the country, it does not need to be expensive, I promise it will be fun.

:39:29. > :39:32.Time to the last ski social of the season, you have been sending in

:39:33. > :39:37.questions in abundance and Bosco is up first, wanting to know how can I

:39:38. > :39:42.reduce muscle fatigue after a day on the slopes? The classic ways are hot

:39:43. > :39:46.tub, in North America, or sauna, in the Alps, but the professionals

:39:47. > :39:52.would rather sit on an exercise bike up for up to an hour, flushing the

:39:53. > :39:55.lactic acid out. You can go classic apres ski, replacing all of the

:39:56. > :40:02.minerals that you have used during the day (!) why are there no

:40:03. > :40:06.downhill snowball braces? It is too dangerous, skis, two edges, is one

:40:07. > :40:11.of them goes, you have a safety net, on a snowboard, at close to 100 mph,

:40:12. > :40:16.if the edge gives out, you will, on the ice, and it is not pretty. There

:40:17. > :40:21.is a reason why snowboards were banned on most speed skiing tracks,

:40:22. > :40:26.too dangerous. Alice wants to know can you snowboard? Yes, I can

:40:27. > :40:30.snowboard, and I really good at it, much better at snowboarding then Ed

:40:31. > :40:34.is at skiing! That is not true, I am a brilliant skier! The reason is

:40:35. > :40:38.that snowboarding is so much easier, so much less going on, technically.

:40:39. > :40:41.It's because you want to let your hair down after you have been in the

:40:42. > :40:46.uptight alpine environment! I think there is a challenge coming on which

:40:47. > :40:52.we will settle next season. We look forward to it. You have been sending

:40:53. > :41:06.in photos all winter, and videos, there has been a mix of the good...

:41:07. > :41:21.It is fair to say, the bad... And the ugly! But I think this clip of

:41:22. > :41:30.little Mika sums up most of your sentiments. Skiing! Skiing! Can't

:41:31. > :41:34.wait until he has snowboarding in his vocabulary! As much as we agree

:41:35. > :41:41.with Mika, it is always good to leave your audience wanting more, we

:41:42. > :41:45.will be reaching fever pitch before the unpicked. We will close the show

:41:46. > :41:48.with a view of the best bits from the winter, and last week we asked

:41:49. > :41:53.your suggestions for a track to accompany this, we got a blend of

:41:54. > :42:04.old and new. One of your favourites was human by Rag'n'Bone Man, but we

:42:05. > :42:09.have heard a lot about recently, so we have gone for something a little

:42:10. > :42:27.bit different. Enjoy your spring, we will see you next year.
