0:00:56 > 0:01:01If you can dream and not make dreams your master, Eddie can think and not

0:01:01 > 0:01:08make thoughts your aim, if you can meet with triumph and disaster and

0:01:08 > 0:01:20treat those two impostors just the same...If you can force your heart

0:01:20 > 0:01:26and not to serve your torrent, long after they had gone... And so hold

0:01:26 > 0:01:30on when there is nothing in you, except the will which says to man,

0:01:30 > 0:01:42hold on. If you can fill the unforgiving minute with 60 seconds

0:01:42 > 0:01:46worth of distance run, yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,

0:01:46 > 0:01:51and, which is more, you will be a woman, my love!

0:01:58 > 0:02:07.Mac to Ski Sunday, we're back in the French Alps.

0:02:07 > 0:02:08The fastest women in the world

0:02:08 > 0:02:10are preparing to race on the iconic course.

0:02:10 > 0:02:12It's a place with bitter-sweet memories

0:02:12 > 0:02:13for World Cup legend Lindsey Vonn.

0:02:13 > 0:02:15She's won here four times in downhill, including

0:02:15 > 0:02:17a World Championship gold eight years ago.

0:02:17 > 0:02:19But she's also suffered two really bad crashes here,

0:02:19 > 0:02:28and hasn't had a great start to the season,

0:02:28 > 0:02:30in Lake Louise in November so the result in Val

0:02:30 > 0:02:32is far from a foregone conclusion.

0:02:32 > 0:02:35Later in the show, we hear from another inspiring female racer,

0:02:35 > 0:02:38Britain's very own Millie Knight, who has high hopes of winning gold

0:02:38 > 0:02:48at the Winter Paralympics next year.

0:02:50 > 0:02:51Racing with a visual impairment like Millie's

0:02:51 > 0:02:55requires courage and skill.

0:02:55 > 0:03:00I've made these goals which replicate my vision, so he can have

0:03:00 > 0:03:11a go.Willie? Is that all that you can see?

0:03:13 > 0:03:15First, we've got the women's super G

0:03:15 > 0:03:18and before the race Chemmy Alcott went to catch up with Lindsey Vonn.

0:03:18 > 0:03:20The American might have broken almost every record

0:03:20 > 0:03:22in the World Cup, but she's as motivated as ever.

0:03:22 > 0:03:25Are happy with how things are progressing? I'm happy with the way

0:03:25 > 0:03:30I'm skiing, but not happy with the result. I'm on a good path, but

0:03:30 > 0:03:34things haven't really gone, they haven't come together. The first

0:03:34 > 0:03:40race in Lake Louise, I was on my way to probably winning the race and

0:03:40 > 0:03:44then crashing, that derailed me a bit. It took me a little bit to get

0:03:44 > 0:03:50back on my feet, then I felt good going in the Super G and I just feel

0:03:50 > 0:03:57like I haven't been able to get my confidence going.The back injury,

0:03:57 > 0:04:01that's anything?I've never had a back problem, my back is normally

0:04:01 > 0:04:09great. The doctor said that my MRI looked amazing. But it is good now

0:04:09 > 0:04:16so I'm happy to be back.I know that your dad is here. How important is

0:04:16 > 0:04:20that structure, that team around you, to keep you focused and happy?

0:04:20 > 0:04:26Is really important. You are on the road for so many months, you need a

0:04:26 > 0:04:31good team supporting you, especially when things don't go well. My dad is

0:04:31 > 0:04:40like my new hype man. It is nice to have family here, they have been so

0:04:40 > 0:04:43good to me.Is that why the dogs are there, because they love you no

0:04:43 > 0:04:51matter what? She is my travelling companion. The road is long and

0:04:51 > 0:04:54that's why I got there. It is nice to have someone to come home too,

0:04:54 > 0:05:01even if you're coming home a hotel room.Eating up the ground here,

0:05:01 > 0:05:04beautiful turns from Lindsey Vonn.I like to keep my intensity high.

0:05:04 > 0:05:15After crashing, my knee was pretty strong, pretty unhappy with me, but

0:05:15 > 0:05:21in general I normally don't back off at all. I don't have an 80% or 90%.

0:05:21 > 0:05:26I am always trying to win. I realise that it's an Olympic year. I'm

0:05:26 > 0:05:34trying to be saved, but I get insane and they just want it.The next

0:05:34 > 0:05:37Olympic Games, going to Korea. It's a track you've done really well on

0:05:37 > 0:05:45last year.I really like the course. It really suits me, I can really

0:05:45 > 0:05:50drive like in Colorado or it can be very icy, depends how the snowmaking

0:05:50 > 0:05:54is and how they prepare. They are trying to build a little bit more

0:05:54 > 0:06:01terrain into the course this summer. We will see when we get there. But

0:06:01 > 0:06:04in general it suits all of the Americans very well and hopefully we

0:06:04 > 0:06:15will have some good luck, there. You went out there, and you had the

0:06:15 > 0:06:18opinion that you were out there to represent the United States people

0:06:18 > 0:06:22and not the president. How do you not let this distraction of a

0:06:22 > 0:06:28ringing you been through recently not get you?I've had a lot of

0:06:28 > 0:06:31distractions in my life, this has been a big one, definitely, but at

0:06:31 > 0:06:36the same time I love my job, I'm happy when I'm skiing, I can block

0:06:36 > 0:06:39everything out and just focus on skiing fast. That's one thing I'm

0:06:39 > 0:06:44really good at. I might not be good at anything else but I can

0:06:44 > 0:06:53definitely block out the noise and stay focused. Racing down the

0:06:53 > 0:06:57mothers that suit you? I don't care, as long as you raise, that is all I

0:06:57 > 0:07:01care about. It has definitely been an interesting season on the ski

0:07:01 > 0:07:05site. It has been nice to see new girls on the podium and it makes the

0:07:05 > 0:07:08World Cup more interesting because you don't then what is going to

0:07:08 > 0:07:12happen, more so like the men's side were any of the top 30 could win any

0:07:12 > 0:07:20of the races. So it is more exciting.

0:07:20 > 0:07:25I'm really pleased to say Chemmy's joined us.

0:07:25 > 0:07:29By her standards, it has been disappointing for Lindsey Vonn, just

0:07:29 > 0:07:34one World Cup victory? What is going on? She needs to get confidence and

0:07:34 > 0:07:37experience. And she has missed so much of the last year through

0:07:37 > 0:07:42injury, she just doesn't have that right now. There are lots of other

0:07:42 > 0:07:45young women who have been chasing her for so long. Now they have

0:07:45 > 0:07:53caught up.Lindsay is just nine of the record of victories in the World

0:07:53 > 0:07:58Cup. The you think that break it? For me it depends how she performs

0:07:58 > 0:08:03in the Olympics this year. If she goes there are claims that gold

0:08:03 > 0:08:08Medal reignite her Mojo, herself believe that she can continue and

0:08:08 > 0:08:13she can compete against the jungles, despite her age.For me, not so

0:08:13 > 0:08:24sure. This could be the crux point of year. -- these young girls.

0:08:24 > 0:08:28Lindsey is in that crux point of her career now, where she could go on to

0:08:28 > 0:08:32the Olympics and win gold and then beat the record, or this could be

0:08:32 > 0:08:36it, this could be the twilight of her career happening right now.

0:08:36 > 0:08:45Who's going to push Lindsay today? The list in Stian Skjerahaug at Tina

0:08:45 > 0:08:50Weirather.The result was a start number race, if you got the good

0:08:50 > 0:08:53start number you are likely to be very wrong. And Cornelia Huetter,

0:08:53 > 0:08:58she has come back from injury well. She won the downhill in Lake Louise

0:08:58 > 0:09:04and she has won at the Super G in the past.Plenty of options. If we

0:09:04 > 0:09:08knew what was good to happen it would be boring. This is Super G, no

0:09:08 > 0:09:13places the corrosion, no prizes for half measures. The equation is

0:09:13 > 0:09:21simple. The fastest women wince. -- wins.

0:09:40 > 0:09:45Let's go and have a look at this beast. They have lowered the start

0:09:45 > 0:09:49the next to the restaurant, straight out of the start and onto the

0:09:49 > 0:09:54Meadows. You can see how much new snow has fallen here. It is so

0:09:54 > 0:09:59important to be like on the skis. You have to make a good transition

0:09:59 > 0:10:07into these corners. Approaching the S into the forest, setting up for

0:10:07 > 0:10:12this turn, hard onto right foot, then a little shimmy back. This is

0:10:12 > 0:10:18the crucial turn, left footer. Onto the flat. You got to carry speedier,

0:10:18 > 0:10:23as you approach the panel jump. Onto the Tamil jump. Wrong direction,

0:10:23 > 0:10:35there! And heading towards the compression now. This is the

0:10:35 > 0:10:38compression, because it squeezes you into the hill, and there you have

0:10:38 > 0:10:43got to wait and then come onto that right ski, carrying the speed out of

0:10:43 > 0:10:49the compression, insight of the finish. Straight over this last

0:10:49 > 0:10:56role, picking up speed now. A little bit bumpy down here. I'm flying

0:10:56 > 0:11:06towards the line. Ha! I got to say, a really nice course to ski.I got

0:11:06 > 0:11:12the line completely wrong off all the tunnel jump. I would not be

0:11:12 > 0:11:18winning this race. A few more challenges for you. Yes, but you've

0:11:18 > 0:11:24got to be released moved to win on this, you got to be on line and

0:11:24 > 0:11:28aggressive, but you have to be smooth in the ratios because of the

0:11:28 > 0:11:33snow.They have not been able to ice this up.It is not icy. On this

0:11:33 > 0:11:39occasion it is all about letting the skis run.It is time for the woman

0:11:39 > 0:11:47is Super G from Val d'Isere. Matt Chilton has the commentary. Training

0:11:47 > 0:11:50has to take place first, and a volume of snow has stopped the

0:11:50 > 0:11:53organiser preparing the full downhill course so we have a sort

0:11:53 > 0:11:58Super G course on the bottom half of the mountain. High-speed tones

0:11:58 > 0:12:01through alternating red and blue control gates, and it will take just

0:12:01 > 0:12:05over a minute to win it. Cornelia Huetter in the start for

0:12:09 > 0:12:14Out into the light snowfall, talented racer, loves speed, has had

0:12:14 > 0:12:19a great starter this season. Victory in the first downhill of the tour,

0:12:19 > 0:12:23as she was on the podium a year ago in the d'Isere downhill, before

0:12:23 > 0:12:28sustaining an injury that kept her out of the rest of the season. It

0:12:28 > 0:12:32has been a really good comeback. Down into the forest at the foot of

0:12:32 > 0:12:40the mountain. Up and over the tunnel jump. The Triple A restaurant on the

0:12:40 > 0:12:48left, lots of people on the terrace watching this race unfold. Uphill

0:12:48 > 0:12:53briefly onto the compression. That big right footed turn towards the

0:12:53 > 0:12:57bottom of the course. This has been a near flawless run so far from the

0:12:57 > 0:13:02Austrian. Typical visibility. Feeling her way through parts of the

0:13:02 > 0:13:10track. Late in the line, hard right ski, and she goes right through the

0:13:10 > 0:13:14middle of that control gate, and she will be disqualified. Happy to have

0:13:14 > 0:13:21finished in one piece. The first run for Cornelia Huetter, showing the

0:13:21 > 0:13:28graph to stay focused at the end, you can't not focus. She skied so

0:13:28 > 0:13:33well and is straddled the second last gate, straddled those lively

0:13:33 > 0:13:43bumps and there was no coming back from that. Now Haehlen from

0:13:43 > 0:13:46Switzerland. Sometimes she can be guilty of pushing just a little too

0:13:46 > 0:13:52wide. She had a good result year ago, top ten, her best ever result

0:13:52 > 0:13:59in Super G. She's a little late finding the line, soft snow at the

0:13:59 > 0:14:03side of the course, there. If you get in that soft snow, it acts as a

0:14:03 > 0:14:11handbrake. Cornelia Huetter has been disqualified so all that Joanna

0:14:11 > 0:14:18Haehlen has to do is finish and she will be leading in Val D'isere. That

0:14:18 > 0:14:22is a good, long, tough position. Up and over the compression. Barely

0:14:22 > 0:14:28moved out of the tap. She wraps the ski poles around her body, to

0:14:28 > 0:14:37improve her shape through the air. 96, through the bottom speed trap,

0:14:37 > 0:14:4396 kilometres per hour, and now she tucks into borderline, and Haehlen

0:14:43 > 0:14:52sets the pace.1:05.56, the time to beat. She seemed to be a little bit

0:14:52 > 0:14:56too aggressive on her skis, and she had the outside knee wiggling in and

0:14:56 > 0:15:00out, and that is not the quickest way to be on this course, you have

0:15:00 > 0:15:04to be smooth and consistent through the donors. Next ago is Nicole

0:15:04 > 0:15:09Schmidhofer, the three new lines skiing and not just on snow, throw

0:15:09 > 0:15:14in a climbing and mountain biking and you get the impression that

0:15:14 > 0:15:18Nicole is something of an adrenaline junkie. Can she get her fix with a

0:15:18 > 0:15:25victory on the piece today?

0:15:25 > 0:15:30Next race, Nicole Schmidhofer. Powerful start, two, three, four

0:15:30 > 0:15:36stamps with the ski poles. Red and blue control gates and she has

0:15:36 > 0:15:41stayed in the temper my position throughout. Now time to stand tall

0:15:41 > 0:15:45for the technical parts of this course. She has the lead at the 1st

0:15:45 > 0:15:50intermediate. 14 hundredths of a 2nd quicker than Joanna Halen, who leads

0:15:50 > 0:15:58at the foot of the mountain. The next sprint, 30.88, Schmidhofer will

0:15:58 > 0:16:03be close. A little wide there. Flew a lot longer in the air than she

0:16:03 > 0:16:08would have wanted. Not the perfect flight. She didn't lose too much

0:16:08 > 0:16:12racing line. Up and over the compression. Down towards the race

0:16:12 > 0:16:20finish. The world Super G Champion, she won the gold medal in this

0:16:20 > 0:16:26discipline in St Mortiz last February. 98.3. A little stumble,

0:16:26 > 0:16:32but it's been a pretty solid run from Nicole Schmidhofer, and should

0:16:32 > 0:16:38leads the way! It was tight. She has got it done by three hundredths.

0:16:38 > 0:16:43Schmidhofer showing her experience. One of these skiers who has done it

0:16:43 > 0:16:47more than others is here. An exciting skier. Super G is about

0:16:47 > 0:16:50making the gate just than she did that and picked up speed as she went

0:16:50 > 0:16:56down the course.Lindsey Vonn is ready to race in Val D'Isere. A

0:16:56 > 0:17:00course where she has had a lot of success in the past, with multiple

0:17:00 > 0:17:07World Cup wins here. She took two gold medals which was used for the

0:17:07 > 0:17:13World Championships in 2009, the most successful ski racer of her

0:17:13 > 0:17:19generation. 77 World Cup wins, looking for number 78 today. Her

0:17:19 > 0:17:22father Alan is here watching her race. She has had a disappointing

0:17:22 > 0:17:26start to this season. A couple of crashes. Thankfully, she is kept

0:17:26 > 0:17:31injury free. Of the tunnel jump, beautiful flight, perfect control in

0:17:31 > 0:17:36the air. The green light comes on for the great Lindsey Vonn. 12

0:17:36 > 0:17:42hundredths of a 2nd quicker than our current leader Nicole Schmidhofer.

0:17:42 > 0:17:47Up through the compression, a little bit of inside ski action from the

0:17:47 > 0:17:53American but she never lost control. Surely Vonn will be well in front at

0:17:53 > 0:17:57the next intermediate. Almost half a 2nd better than Nicole Schmidhofer!

0:17:57 > 0:18:02A little stumble their from Lindsey Vonn but she kept the speed up and

0:18:02 > 0:18:10she's got the lead. A massive margin in favour of Vonn by 0.60 seven. She

0:18:10 > 0:18:18is back.Yes, yes, yes!A big lead for Lindsey Vonn and a big smile at

0:18:18 > 0:18:21the finish area but she went out the start gate she looked very nervous.

0:18:21 > 0:18:25The timing wasn't there but she worked her way into the course. Then

0:18:25 > 0:18:30there was a scare just before the finish, Lindsey Vonn put her hand on

0:18:30 > 0:18:34the snow and was almost pulled out of the course but the core strength

0:18:34 > 0:18:37and determination to fight above line was brilliant.

0:18:37 > 0:18:48In the start-up is Tina Weirather. She has previous has been on podium

0:18:48 > 0:18:53twice. Can Tina race with her mother's touch and take victory

0:18:53 > 0:19:00today? Tina Weirather, wearing the red bib

0:19:00 > 0:19:04that signifies that she is the leader in the World Cup Super G

0:19:04 > 0:19:10standings. She was victorious in the opening Super G race of the tour at

0:19:10 > 0:19:15Lake Louise in November. She was on the podium last weekend in

0:19:15 > 0:19:20Switzerland at St Mortiz, 3rd that day. She is the defending World Cup

0:19:20 > 0:19:27Super G Champion. She won that title at the end of 2017. She is down!

0:19:27 > 0:19:33Tina Weirather comes to an abrupt stop. Hopefully she will be OK. It

0:19:33 > 0:19:36looked fairly innocuous.Really uncharacteristic from Tina

0:19:36 > 0:19:39Weirather, so confident at the start, laying the skis over but she

0:19:39 > 0:19:42didn't pull it off. Coming into the forest, just got caught on the

0:19:42 > 0:19:50inside and went down quite hard, hit her head but she is up and fine.

0:19:50 > 0:19:55Johanna Schnarf from Italy, number eight, the veteran. 33 years old.

0:19:55 > 0:20:01Has never won a World Cup race. She's been getting close. Two decent

0:20:01 > 0:20:13results at the start of the season. Six Matt Lake Louise. On that big

0:20:13 > 0:20:17right footed turn should put the brakes off. She will have lost a

0:20:17 > 0:20:2210th of a 2nd or possibly more as a result of that little edge check.

0:20:22 > 0:20:2930.90 six. 31.21 for Schnarf. That's the difference, the quarter of a

0:20:29 > 0:20:362nd. Running well, good and fast transition from edge to edge, uphill

0:20:36 > 0:20:41briefly, stands on the right ski, it's a bit of soft snow at the side

0:20:41 > 0:20:47of the course and then gets towards the final five or six dates. Within

0:20:47 > 0:20:54half a 2nd of Lindsey Vonn's time. Good speed as well for Johanna

0:20:54 > 0:21:00Schnarf of Italy. Vonn's lead... Johanna Schnarf good enough for 4th

0:21:00 > 0:21:04place at the moment. Ready to race 's Lara Gut. The Swiss

0:21:04 > 0:21:10star is a World Cup veteran, making her debut 12 years ago. Still only

0:21:10 > 0:21:1528, Lara has plenty left in the tank. She loves racing and training

0:21:15 > 0:21:19and keeping her hips lose the Super G turns by throwing shapes in the

0:21:19 > 0:21:23warm up area. Will she danced to victory today?

0:21:23 > 0:21:28Lara Gut is racing in Val D'Isere. Impressive start. I wonder if the

0:21:28 > 0:21:34snow might be a little soft underfoot for Lara Gut? Prefers it

0:21:34 > 0:21:40when it is a little harder and more I see on the World Cup racetracks.

0:21:40 > 0:21:44100th of a 2nd behind Lindsey Vonn at the 1st intermediate. A beautiful

0:21:44 > 0:21:50turn for Lara Gut. Smooth, sweeping right footed turn she dives down to

0:21:50 > 0:21:56the base of the Meadows. Approaching the tunnel jump now. Lindsey Vonn's

0:21:56 > 0:22:04time of 31.90 six. Lara Gut not too far away. Just returning from

0:22:04 > 0:22:07injury, getting the confidence back after she ruptured her anterior

0:22:07 > 0:22:12cruciate ligament at the World Championships in St Mortiz, not

0:22:12 > 0:22:16before she had taken a medal in the Super G. She has had a good start to

0:22:16 > 0:22:23the season. 2nd in the Lake Louise race, the 1st Super G of the season.

0:22:23 > 0:22:2898.09 kilometres an hour for Lara Gut. Just over half a 2nd down. The

0:22:28 > 0:22:33soft snow certainly not her friend this morning here in Val D'Isere. A

0:22:33 > 0:22:39full 2nd off the pace and 6th. Lara Gut, normally so aggressive on

0:22:39 > 0:22:44her skis. I think today she tried to be relaxed and let the skis flow but

0:22:44 > 0:22:48what I did is brought her shoulders up, and so she was almost too

0:22:48 > 0:22:51passive and catching too much wind with her body. That's what really

0:22:51 > 0:22:57cost her the time. The best chance for France, Tessa

0:22:57 > 0:23:03Worley. Double world champion in Cheval, getting better all the time

0:23:03 > 0:23:10in Super G. Let's see what she can produce. She comes not too far away

0:23:10 > 0:23:13from here. A big fan club gathered at the foot of the mountain. What a

0:23:13 > 0:23:19start for Tessa Worley. But then she makes a massive mistake, gets

0:23:19 > 0:23:22strapped backwards by the soft snow at the side of the

0:23:25 > 0:23:31powder slowing her down. She is in trouble on the tunnel jump, what a

0:23:31 > 0:23:37recovery! A little bit of aerial ballet there from the French skier.

0:23:37 > 0:23:41Lee Johnston get near the leader's time has gone, but she's done well

0:23:41 > 0:23:45to stay on the track here. -- a chance to get near the leader's time

0:23:45 > 0:23:50has gone. We will check her time now was that she will be more than a 2nd

0:23:50 > 0:24:00down on Lindsey Vonn here. 1.7 one. All the speed has been wiped away

0:24:00 > 0:24:04with the spectacular recovery on the tunnel jump. Tessa Worley comes home

0:24:04 > 0:24:09and dry and 11th position. So the crowd really getting behind Tessa

0:24:09 > 0:24:12Worley, who skied fantastically. She has good form here, she has won on

0:24:12 > 0:24:16this hill. She charged and then make some really rocky mistakes, going

0:24:16 > 0:24:21off that tunnel jump, twisting and managing to pull that core strength

0:24:21 > 0:24:31and pull it off but losing too much speed.Sofia Goggia from Italy. An

0:24:31 > 0:24:37exciting race. Always some fireworks when Goggia attacks these World Cup

0:24:37 > 0:24:42courses. Often running in Val D'Isere. Aggressive start. Low and

0:24:42 > 0:24:48focused. Now she stands tall briefly for these more technical turns. Not

0:24:48 > 0:24:53far behind Lindsey Vonn at that intermediate, 16 hundredths of a 2nd

0:24:53 > 0:24:59off the pace. Goggia goes between the trees, where there is a little

0:24:59 > 0:25:02more definition. Visibility just slightly improved on this part of

0:25:02 > 0:25:07the course on the tunnel jump, where Tesak Worley had her shaky moment.

0:25:07 > 0:25:12Goggia comes through unscathed. This is fast and accurate, solid skiing

0:25:12 > 0:25:18from the Italian. She was at the World Championships last year in the

0:25:18 > 0:25:24giant slalom and just missed the podium in the downhill, 4th. She is

0:25:24 > 0:25:28one to watch at the Olympic Winter games. She was the winner of the

0:25:28 > 0:25:34Olympic test event in the Super G in Pyeongchang last March, love for

0:25:34 > 0:25:39Olympic course. How will she fare in Val D'Isere? Pretty close, good

0:25:39 > 0:25:43enough for 2nd. Excellent run again for Goggia.

0:25:47 > 0:25:51So despite not having the results this season in Super G, you can

0:25:51 > 0:25:54never write off Goggia, she's a firecracker to watch, always

0:25:54 > 0:25:58exciting. She laid it over, had the confidence to make big angles and

0:25:58 > 0:26:11they paid off. She goes into 2nd. Ragnhild Mowinckel from Norway. The

0:26:11 > 0:26:16Norwegians have plenty of good skiers. Ragnhild Mowinckel the only

0:26:16 > 0:26:20serious contender in downhill and Super G. That's how she deals with

0:26:20 > 0:26:24this Val D'Isere Super G today. She has been making good progress in the

0:26:24 > 0:26:29early part of the season, with the regular top ten finishes. She's got

0:26:29 > 0:26:35all the support of the well funded Norwegian ski Federation behind her.

0:26:35 > 0:26:40She has made a really positive start here. 100th of a 2nd quicker than

0:26:40 > 0:26:48Lindsey Vonn at the 1st split. She is right in that, 12 hundredths of a

0:26:48 > 0:26:552nd off the pace. A slightly off-kilter landing as she exits the

0:26:55 > 0:27:02tunnel jump. She now goes uphill and over the compression. Mowinckel's

0:27:02 > 0:27:06speed has remained intact. Looking for her first-ever World Cup podium

0:27:06 > 0:27:12finish, and she's in the hunt. Just under 100 kilometres through the

0:27:12 > 0:27:16speed gap. Ragnhild Mowinckel of Norway, looking to really kick-start

0:27:16 > 0:27:25her season. She is into 3rd. Excellent skiing.Really strong

0:27:25 > 0:27:29skiing from Ragnhild Mowinckel and it's proving it still can be done on

0:27:29 > 0:27:32this course. I think Lindsey is starting to get a little nervous in

0:27:32 > 0:27:36the winner's seat at the finish. The weather is improving slightly, as

0:27:36 > 0:27:41well. Ready to go is Viktoria Rebensburg.

0:27:41 > 0:27:48She is a multiple winner in giant slalom but has taken depressing

0:27:48 > 0:27:54results in speed events in recent years. Off the track, her passion is

0:27:54 > 0:27:59cycling and football. Can she take World Cup victory for Germany today?

0:27:59 > 0:28:03Viktoria Rebensburg were ready to go. Standing tall in the start

0:28:03 > 0:28:08heart. An aggressive push out of the gate and away. A good start to the

0:28:08 > 0:28:15season in giant slalom, two wins. She has been in the top six in Super

0:28:15 > 0:28:21G as well. Could be one to watch today, Rebensberg. She's made a

0:28:21 > 0:28:26dynamic start. Five hundredths of a 2nd faster than Lindsey Vonn, who is

0:28:26 > 0:28:30watching at the foot of the mountain. Vonn hoping today will

0:28:30 > 0:28:35bring her World Cup win number 78 and the 1st of her season.

0:28:35 > 0:28:38Rebensberg was flying and then jammed the skis sideways and will

0:28:38 > 0:28:45have lost all of that leader as a result. Just the slightest mistake.

0:28:45 > 0:28:50Fine margins in this sport. She was for hundredths of a 2nd ahead at the

0:28:50 > 0:28:582nd intermediate. She will be behind at the next. It is 54.73 for Vonn

0:28:58 > 0:29:04and 55.24 for Rebensberg. The difference of just over half a 2nd.

0:29:04 > 0:29:08Rebensberg stands hard on that right foot, tucks in for the line. One

0:29:08 > 0:29:13mistake of cost her the chance, she is 7th.Rebensberg starting off so

0:29:13 > 0:29:17promising with the green light, through it all away with one late

0:29:17 > 0:29:20turn of the tunnel jump and there is note coming back from that.Another

0:29:20 > 0:29:24World Cup win for Lindsey Vonn as she closes in on the record of 86,

0:29:24 > 0:29:29held by the great Ingemar Stenmark. When we spent

0:29:29 > 0:29:31held by the great Ingemar Stenmark. When we spent this league said you

0:29:31 > 0:29:33are happy with your performance but the result wasn't there to stop what

0:29:33 > 0:29:39was different today?I just tried to attack, tried to be in a solid

0:29:39 > 0:29:46position. I definitely got through the gates to the finish happy with

0:29:46 > 0:29:52how I skied.Did you realise how close you were on the 2nd last date?

0:29:52 > 0:29:55I was thinking, dude, don't crash right before the finish, you idiot!

0:29:55 > 0:29:59I feel so good to be at the top of the podium and to get my confidence

0:29:59 > 0:30:04back up and get the ball rolling for the rest of the season.

0:30:04 > 0:30:10In Italy, the big star of the men's World Cup tour axle took his 2nd

0:30:10 > 0:30:15downhill win of the season. Meanwhile, in the absence of Lindsey

0:30:15 > 0:30:19Vonn, Olympic Super G 's champion Anna Viper took victory earlier

0:30:19 > 0:30:26today in the week and's 2nd Super G from Val D'Isere. In cross-country

0:30:26 > 0:30:30skiing, Great Britain's Andrew Musgrave celebrated the best result

0:30:30 > 0:30:34of his career, winning bronze in the 15 kilometres freestyle World Cup in

0:30:34 > 0:30:38Italy.

0:30:38 > 0:30:48Great Britain's Issey Atkin, and her team-mate James was finished seventh

0:30:48 > 0:30:51in the men's competition.In freestyle Arial, Britain's Lloyd

0:30:51 > 0:30:55Wallace made his return to World Cup competition in China, just four

0:30:55 > 0:31:00months after a training injury was left him in an induced coma. He

0:31:00 > 0:31:03finished in an encouraging 19th position.

0:31:03 > 0:31:06finished in an encouraging 19th position.With 28 in just around the

0:31:06 > 0:31:12corner, attention is inevitably turning towards events in Korea. --

0:31:12 > 0:31:142018.

0:31:14 > 0:31:16Team GB are hoping for their most successful Winter Olympics ever,

0:31:16 > 0:31:19and they're just as ambitious at Paralympics GB, with a number

0:31:19 > 0:31:20of medal contenders on snow.

0:31:20 > 0:31:23Graham's been to Saas Fee in Switzerland to meet one

0:31:23 > 0:31:30of them, Millie Knight.

0:31:30 > 0:31:35When you are ski racing, your senses are super heightened, you feel every

0:31:35 > 0:31:40bump underneath your skis, and your eyes pick up cambers and gradients

0:31:40 > 0:31:44and adjust to like conditions quicker than any camera good. Your

0:31:44 > 0:31:46brain then processes that information and makes lightning fast

0:31:46 > 0:31:53decisions to make you fast and keep you safe. I really can't fathom how

0:31:53 > 0:31:56you can race with visual impairment, but Millie Knight does just that and

0:31:56 > 0:32:06does it brilliantly. Tell me about your disability and how you develop.

0:32:06 > 0:32:10I lost my sight in my right eye when I was one, then I lost again in my

0:32:10 > 0:32:16left eye when I was six, and since then I have been left with just

0:32:16 > 0:32:21peripheral site, the majority in my left eye, I can only see light in my

0:32:21 > 0:32:27right eye, and it is about two metres, after that it is unclear.

0:32:27 > 0:32:32When did you learn to ski with all of that? I lost my sight when I was

0:32:32 > 0:32:35six, then my mum decided it would be a fantastic idea to go skiing, which

0:32:35 > 0:32:39it turns out was a fantastic idea, and that is where the journey

0:32:39 > 0:32:44started. My mum was my first guide and I knew from the moment I got my

0:32:44 > 0:32:50skis on that this was my passion, something I really wanted to do.

0:32:50 > 0:32:54Tell me about your selection process for Sochi.I got a phone call my

0:32:54 > 0:32:5815th birthday to say I had been selected for the Paralympics, which

0:32:58 > 0:33:02is the most crazy thing because I wasn't expecting it at all. When you

0:33:02 > 0:33:05meant to Sochi you within carrying the flag. Yes, that was absolutely

0:33:05 > 0:33:10amazing. I got called into the office and told that I was going to

0:33:10 > 0:33:15be carrying the flag. Prior to that I thought I was in trouble and that

0:33:15 > 0:33:18I was going to be told of this meeting, but no, it was absolutely

0:33:18 > 0:33:22fantastic. Walking out into the stadium with 50,000 people

0:33:22 > 0:33:26screaming, it's something you cannot really re-enact. I had no pressure

0:33:26 > 0:33:30on me. It was purely for the experience that I went, but the

0:33:30 > 0:33:34experience that I gained from that is so important and has set me up

0:33:34 > 0:33:42really well for, hopefully, if I get selected next year.Selection is

0:33:42 > 0:33:45vital, if you can see it, but if you're visually impaired it is even

0:33:45 > 0:33:52more important. It is the time when we sweep through what Brett is going

0:33:52 > 0:33:57to say so that there are no secrets or surprises. You are looking at the

0:33:57 > 0:34:01course, you're going to tell Millie what you're going to say at that

0:34:01 > 0:34:08point. How much do you have to memorise the course?I memorise more

0:34:08 > 0:34:12of the rain and promised that Brett is going to give me.Brett was a

0:34:12 > 0:34:15promising ski race with the Scottish junior squad but he had embarked a

0:34:15 > 0:34:21career as a sub Mariner with the Royal Navy and the offer to guide

0:34:21 > 0:34:29Millie came out of the blue.I had been given five weeks to race at the

0:34:29 > 0:34:33Milijovejic then I got a text course to do a trial with a visually

0:34:33 > 0:34:38impaired skier, and I had to respond asking what it was, I didn't even

0:34:38 > 0:34:48have a clue.A big push... The first time I met him he asked so many

0:34:48 > 0:34:52questions. And that the me was fantastic that he really wanted to

0:34:52 > 0:34:57get it right. And that commitment that he had was the thing that I

0:34:57 > 0:35:03really liked.Coming through, little bit bumpy, stand strong, stand on,

0:35:03 > 0:35:09stand on.You need to have complete trust in Brett.I need to know that

0:35:09 > 0:35:13he knows the course, he knows the fastest line, but he also has to

0:35:13 > 0:35:19take me down safely.Turn, turn... You have to be clear and confident

0:35:19 > 0:35:23at all times so I believe my Royal Navy training on communications on

0:35:23 > 0:35:26the submarine is one of the biggest things that help, if I am not clear

0:35:26 > 0:35:33and confident to Millie she's not going to trust me and commit 100%.I

0:35:33 > 0:35:37need to know that if he told me to do something at 90 miles an hour, I

0:35:37 > 0:35:41need to know that that's the right thing. You need to repeat that

0:35:41 > 0:35:46outside, then you repeat on the outside ski.Is it important to get

0:35:46 > 0:35:52on with your guide off the slopes, is not just a kind of 9-to-5 job?It

0:35:52 > 0:35:57is very much my 9-to-5 job. It is so important to get on, off the snow.

0:35:57 > 0:36:02We do everything together. Even when we are at home and not even on a

0:36:02 > 0:36:06camp I am talking to him daily.Me and my girlfriend Claire would go

0:36:06 > 0:36:11down and spend the week in London with Millie, we have gone down for a

0:36:11 > 0:36:14couple of concerts, and it makes it a lot easier when you are spending

0:36:14 > 0:36:17so much time together that it is your friend. That's really nice that

0:36:17 > 0:36:21I can have Brett as a professional partnership but also as a really

0:36:21 > 0:36:26good friend. You go out of the gate, what do you see when you are doing

0:36:26 > 0:36:31the downhill? So, the distance between me and Brett on the downhill

0:36:31 > 0:36:36is probably five metres away. Which is a little bit further than my

0:36:36 > 0:36:40site, so on a downhill, I rely pretty much solely on the audio

0:36:40 > 0:36:46feedback that I get from Brett. I try to follow the orange blur as

0:36:46 > 0:36:52much as possible! You get his orange jacket, do you see the blue marks on

0:36:52 > 0:36:56the side of the course? The gates? Possibly the gates, as they whizz

0:36:56 > 0:37:02past. Depending on how close I am. I have made these goggles that

0:37:02 > 0:37:07replicate my vision.Would you like to have a go? I can see that that is

0:37:07 > 0:37:13a very high-tech.It is basically just duct tape.Just gaffer tape

0:37:13 > 0:37:16across your site.Is that all you can see? It is mainly peripheral

0:37:16 > 0:37:23vision. I put my head down a little bit because I can see out of the

0:37:23 > 0:37:27tops of my eyes a little bit better. That little gap, their? Let's have a

0:37:27 > 0:37:34go. I'm going to have a go down the course.What do I need from you? I

0:37:34 > 0:37:38am shouting, if you just shout the back to me, yes, yes, even to see

0:37:38 > 0:37:44outcome of.I am all new, aunt, all... Then I can't see any more,

0:37:44 > 0:37:52I'm off! To be honest I could barely see Brett. The top of the course was

0:37:52 > 0:37:55fairly flat but then making confident tones was difficult

0:37:55 > 0:37:59because I was so uncertain of where I was and what was coming next. I

0:37:59 > 0:38:15was already well out of my comfort zone when we hit the steep.Go!Wow!

0:38:15 > 0:38:22Total respect. Would you like these goggles back? Very much so. At one

0:38:22 > 0:38:27stage I might as well have been blind, I could just about hear

0:38:27 > 0:38:30Brett, I couldn't see it. Did you see me go straight through one of

0:38:30 > 0:38:37the gates? It has been filmed so she will be able to watch it!You will

0:38:37 > 0:38:42see it, I go straight through one of them. Putting myself in the skis of

0:38:42 > 0:38:47Millie made me have an appreciation of how in June she is with Brett and

0:38:47 > 0:38:56how well they have worked together. We didn't have many goals for the

0:38:56 > 0:39:01World Championships, we just wanted to do well, and a gold would be

0:39:01 > 0:39:06lovely, and I was in a great mental place for the downhill, and in the

0:39:06 > 0:39:12end we skied really well. I actually crashed at the bottom of the

0:39:12 > 0:39:19downhill run. So that wasn't great. It is getting her down competitively

0:39:19 > 0:39:23but safely first, so when she did crash, it was horrible. I can

0:39:23 > 0:39:26remember hearing the screams and I knew straightaway that it was bad,

0:39:26 > 0:39:33then she got stuck underneath the kind of blow-up fence.I did feel

0:39:33 > 0:39:37extremely guilty. It has taken me four monster get over the

0:39:37 > 0:39:42concussion. It does not your confidence and you do is start the

0:39:42 > 0:39:47question, well, is this safe?Do you work with a sports psychologist?

0:39:47 > 0:39:53Yes. And what are you working on? Regaining trust and confidence in

0:39:53 > 0:39:59myself. Our performance is very much psychological. On race day it comes

0:39:59 > 0:40:04down to 80% psychological and 20% actual ability, because your mental

0:40:04 > 0:40:09mindset is what allows you to do what you do.It's about releasing

0:40:09 > 0:40:13that mental handbrake.Very much so, just letting go of what you think

0:40:13 > 0:40:18could be dangerous, you've just got to go. I train every day with the

0:40:18 > 0:40:24goal of winning gold. And that's what really motivates me, to do

0:40:24 > 0:40:29that, that one more rep in the gym. You imagine it winning the gold,

0:40:29 > 0:40:33what would it be like to win Paralympic gold?Talking about it

0:40:33 > 0:40:39gives me butterflies. I started skiing when I was six years old, and

0:40:39 > 0:40:43ever since that moment I thought, I love to do this on a competitive

0:40:43 > 0:40:47level, and I want to win gold at whatever it is I'm doing, and there

0:40:47 > 0:40:51have been a lot of people on my journey so far that have helped me

0:40:51 > 0:40:57get to the stage that I'm at, and I think, to win gold, it will do it

0:40:57 > 0:41:00justice of the help that I've had, and hopefully make a lot of people

0:41:00 > 0:41:12proud.We're almost at the end of the show. We have time for Ski

0:41:12 > 0:41:17Social. Thanks to that enormous dump of snow across the UK, you have not

0:41:17 > 0:41:29disappointed and you have been sending in your pictures this week.

0:41:32 > 0:41:40And a certain Lotte Bell got involved.Sue could not find any

0:41:40 > 0:41:46skis, so she made do with a couple of sledges on ice. Nice! And after

0:41:46 > 0:41:50the ski fashion fails last week you guys have been sending them in. No

0:41:50 > 0:41:57shortage of rightly coloured onesies worn without a hint of irony! We

0:41:57 > 0:42:01have a question here, the first one is quite apt, Nicola Coles wants to

0:42:01 > 0:42:10to know what other best lens to wear and a white out.I have prepared

0:42:10 > 0:42:15this one earlier, Blue Peter style. Lens shades have changed hugely,

0:42:15 > 0:42:21bright yellow drawers and old alike, they go dark until they are almost
