0:00:14 > 0:00:22Dropping.

0:00:56 > 0:01:004240 metres to ski. 2.5 miles.

0:01:05 > 0:01:10In the above Wengen, the crowds gathered to witness the best of the

0:01:10 > 0:01:17best.

0:01:17 > 0:01:22best. -- in the skies above Wengen. To become the very best takes

0:01:22 > 0:01:25meticulous preparation. Only when you are truly ready can you take

0:01:25 > 0:01:26flight.

0:01:33 > 0:01:39To conquer the Lauberhorn takes endurance.Has he got the strength

0:01:39 > 0:01:46and stamina?Concentration. He is on course and then he goes.Oh, dear.

0:01:46 > 0:01:49Agility, lightning reflexes. That is how to do it, he makes the turn in

0:01:49 > 0:01:58midair.And more than anything else, speed. The speed through the gun is

0:01:58 > 0:02:06more than 100 mph. He has left it all on the Lauberhorn.

0:02:11 > 0:02:14Hello and welcome to Ski Sunday.

0:02:14 > 0:02:19This week, we're in Wengen for the men's downhill.

0:02:19 > 0:02:23When you look at the statistics it is easy to see why this race is a

0:02:23 > 0:02:25classic.

0:02:25 > 0:02:26It's the oldest, established in 1930.

0:02:26 > 0:02:28It's the longest, four and a half kilometres,

0:02:28 > 0:02:33two and a half minutes of racing on the limit.

0:02:33 > 0:02:35And it's the fastest, with the speedometer clocking

0:02:35 > 0:02:37a record 100mph a few years ago.

0:02:37 > 0:02:42It truly is a spectacle not to be missed.

0:02:42 > 0:02:45And from the speed of the downhill, we take things down a notch

0:02:45 > 0:02:48with the inspiring tale of a young woman called Chase.

0:02:48 > 0:02:50Her health issues make everyday life incredibly difficult,

0:02:50 > 0:02:58but her passion for snowboarding makes the pain worthwhile.

0:02:58 > 0:03:05I love how do kind of free it feels. It is like flying. It is amazing.

0:03:05 > 0:03:08Let's go flying.

0:03:08 > 0:03:12Before that, we've got the men's downhill from Wengen.

0:03:12 > 0:03:16Raced on the mighty Lauberhorn, it's a course dripping in history,

0:03:16 > 0:03:20with all the features named after famous, or infamous moments.

0:03:20 > 0:03:22Before his camera run, Graham's been taking

0:03:22 > 0:03:28a trip down memory lane.

0:03:28 > 0:03:31There are number of sections and there's Lauberhorn course that set

0:03:31 > 0:03:36it apart from any other downhill in the world. Because it is so old,

0:03:36 > 0:03:41some of these features would not be allowed on a modern downhill. The

0:03:41 > 0:03:48first one is this, Hundschopf. The hound's head. It is of that -- it is

0:03:48 > 0:03:52effectively a cliff drop. The growing drops away from you and you

0:03:52 > 0:03:56go into freefall, giving you butterflies in your stomach. The

0:03:56 > 0:04:01landing is super steep, but if you are out jump the landing like

0:04:01 > 0:04:05Svindal did a few years ago, you will end up crashing out.He is in

0:04:05 > 0:04:09the nets.My word. I remember my arms flailing. It gets the

0:04:09 > 0:04:15adrenaline going. As soon as you land from the Hundschopf, you have

0:04:15 > 0:04:21picked up lots of speed. You have this left-hander onto this jump

0:04:21 > 0:04:26known as Minsch-Kante, named after a Swiss skier who crashed here. It is

0:04:26 > 0:04:30harder than it looks. You have to switch weight from one like to the

0:04:30 > 0:04:36other well you're in a. When you land from the Minsch-Kante, you are

0:04:36 > 0:04:38straight onto the Canadian Corner, named after the Canadians who

0:04:38 > 0:04:43crashed here in the 1970s. Another section that would not be allowed on

0:04:43 > 0:04:51a modern downhill. This is now known as the Kernen-S. There was a

0:04:51 > 0:04:57spectacular crash in the 1990s. This is where the course goes underneath

0:04:57 > 0:05:00the railway. I always reckoned it was lucky if there was a train going

0:05:00 > 0:05:08over the top as you race underneath. No time to wave. This is the fastest

0:05:08 > 0:05:12part of the course, the Haneggschuss. It is the fastest part

0:05:12 > 0:05:17of any course. A few years ago a French skier went over 100 mph

0:05:17 > 0:05:24through the speed trap. Remarkable speed across the snow. Up there is

0:05:24 > 0:05:28the Silberhornsprung. It is a fairly new edition, but this part is the

0:05:28 > 0:05:34Osterreicherloch. The Swiss christened it as a date at the

0:05:34 > 0:05:38Austrian rivals, including this legend. The crashed one after

0:05:38 > 0:05:44another kid in 1954. In 1984, Bill Johnson spectacularly stayed on the

0:05:44 > 0:05:52course. Bill Johnson, down the Lauberhorn. At this point the lactic

0:05:52 > 0:05:56acid will build up so much that your legs will be screaming at you. You

0:05:56 > 0:06:02need to summon up every last bit of energy to take on the course. It is

0:06:02 > 0:06:07the Ziel-S. After 2.5 minutes, you're absolutely spent. This

0:06:07 > 0:06:14legendary Swiss skier crashed into the hay bales back in the 1980s.

0:06:14 > 0:06:20More recently, Miller crashed in the finish area after winning the race.

0:06:20 > 0:06:25Unbelievable drama. It really is a physical test from start to finish.

0:06:29 > 0:06:32Amazing to think people have been racing on this course for almost 90

0:06:32 > 0:06:35years.

0:06:35 > 0:06:37But the thing that really marks it out as being

0:06:37 > 0:06:38different is its length.

0:06:38 > 0:06:40Just put that extra distance into context compared

0:06:40 > 0:06:41with a normal downhill course?

0:06:41 > 0:06:46Physically it would be like asking a 400 metre runner to run 600 meters

0:06:46 > 0:06:50are Premier League footballer to play extra time in every game. The

0:06:50 > 0:06:58toughest part of this course is in the last 30 seconds. The Ziel-S.

0:06:58 > 0:07:02What type of skier does this Cossu? Someone tenacious? Historically it

0:07:02 > 0:07:08has been a skier with a good technical base. Someone who has

0:07:08 > 0:07:13switched to downhill. Because of the tight turns and the long gliding

0:07:13 > 0:07:17sections. You need to carry the speed out of the terms. When you

0:07:17 > 0:07:22look at the World Cup rankings furred downhill, the top men, Feuz

0:07:22 > 0:07:25and Svindal are both previous winners. You've got to expect them

0:07:25 > 0:07:30to feature?Yes, Svindal does not train quickly because he's coming

0:07:30 > 0:07:35back from a knee injury but he will pull it out 100% for the race. Beat

0:07:35 > 0:07:40Feuz does not need one hand -- does not need any excuse to go 100%,

0:07:40 > 0:07:50particularly at home in Switzerland. Who do you fancy? There are the

0:07:50 > 0:07:53Italians. Dominik Paris edged out Svindal just before Christmas. His

0:07:53 > 0:08:00team-mate, Peter Fill as well. There are Austrians, Max Franz, Matthias

0:08:00 > 0:08:06Mayer, to name but two. We could news on the result, but there are no

0:08:06 > 0:08:11guarantees in downhill, especially on a course that gets your heart

0:08:11 > 0:08:19pounding, your legs screaming, and puts the crowd into a frenzy.

0:08:21 > 0:08:30-- whips the crowd. He leads the way. Absolutely ripping it up, going

0:08:30 > 0:08:37like an express train.

0:08:37 > 0:08:42It has been five years since we have been able to start at the top

0:08:42 > 0:08:46without any weather delays, so this is a real treat. Let's have a look

0:08:46 > 0:08:51at the most classic of downhills. It is fast up year. The snow is running

0:08:51 > 0:08:59really quick. Now we are approaching the Hundschopf. You can see the

0:08:59 > 0:09:07Eiger. It is looking down on you. You come into this tight

0:09:07 > 0:09:10right-hander. You have got to carry the speed through. Into the

0:09:10 > 0:09:19left-hander. Setting up for the jump. Over the jump. Down onto the

0:09:19 > 0:09:26steep section. Heading towards the Minsch-Kante. Switch the edges. Now

0:09:26 > 0:09:34the Canadian Corner. That is good, carry the speed out onto the little

0:09:34 > 0:09:40flat. Now the Kernen-S. No room to set up, right by the fence. Ardron

0:09:40 > 0:09:48the edges. Run out onto the bank. Carry maximum speed onto the next

0:09:48 > 0:09:58section as you fly underneath the railway track.

0:10:02 > 0:10:08We are onto the Haneggschuss. The courses really icy really fast.

0:10:08 > 0:10:15Absolutely flying. Out into the sunshine. You have got to carry all

0:10:15 > 0:10:24this speed. The next little jump, the Silberhornsprung. We are now

0:10:24 > 0:10:28heading towards the Osterreicherloch. Through the

0:10:28 > 0:10:35Austrian hole. My legs are burning. You cannot break the park too early.

0:10:35 > 0:10:42Set up wide by the fence, hang on to the right ski, onto the left ski. No

0:10:42 > 0:10:49energy left as you go over the finish.

0:10:49 > 0:10:53finish. How are the likes? A little bit burnt out. The more you go down

0:10:53 > 0:10:59the course, the icy it gets. It is so warm down here, but it has frozen

0:10:59 > 0:11:04really hard.We will let you get your breath back. It is time for the

0:11:04 > 0:11:08men's downhill on the Lauberhorn. Matt Chilton has the commentary.

0:11:08 > 0:11:13Tens of thousands have flocked to Wengen for this magnificent race. It

0:11:13 > 0:11:16is one of those rare occasions where we have perfect conditions and the

0:11:16 > 0:11:23classic Lauberhorn downhill over the full 4.2 kilometre course. We are

0:11:23 > 0:11:31all set for Wengen 2018. Feuz of Switzerland, the first to tackle the

0:11:31 > 0:11:36Lauberhorn. Here he goes. 2.5 minutes or there about, like burning

0:11:36 > 0:11:41fun in the mountains. What a day in the Swiss Alps. We will follow his

0:11:41 > 0:11:45run, some of it at least, from the helicopter circling above. A

0:11:45 > 0:11:51straightforward start. Some wide-open turns before he has to

0:11:51 > 0:11:58work hard and concentrate for the famed and fearsome Hundschopf jump,

0:11:58 > 0:12:04which is a cliff jump, to all intents and purposes. Down on the

0:12:04 > 0:12:12left ski. Swings around, and then prepares for this iconic lounge in

0:12:12 > 0:12:17Wengen. Beautifully taken. Perfect flight. Stands hard and the right

0:12:17 > 0:12:23ski. Now we will pick him up at the Minsch-Kante which can catch them

0:12:23 > 0:12:28out. Into the Canadian Corner. Locate out the courses. Just about

0:12:28 > 0:12:39five metres wide at its narrowest point. The Kernen-S, in at 108.

0:12:39 > 0:12:41point. The Kernen-S, in at 108. I did 79.1 kilometres per hour. Local

0:12:41 > 0:12:44legend has it that if you go under the bridge with the train above, you

0:12:44 > 0:12:53are in luck. 110.3, the latest speed trap reading for Feuz as he comes

0:12:53 > 0:13:01into words the forest. This is the fastest part of the Lauberhorn, the

0:13:01 > 0:13:05feminists Haneggschuss, where we would expect speeds in excess of 90

0:13:05 > 0:13:11mph. A little stumble with the left ski. He recovered well, and dives

0:13:11 > 0:13:15down the quickest part of the course. We will get another reading

0:13:15 > 0:13:23on his speed across the snow. 145. That is in excess of 90 mph. Much

0:13:23 > 0:13:29more the rain to come, including the Silberhornsprung John. Raised

0:13:29 > 0:13:37artificially to add a certain spectacle to this famous track. By

0:13:37 > 0:13:42now, his legs are on fire. He is a big unit, Feuz. It is a near-perfect

0:13:42 > 0:13:51run. He flies the final rule and sets the pace.It is good. 1: 26.5.

0:13:51 > 0:13:55Feuz putting down a mistake free run from number one. The early start

0:13:55 > 0:14:00numbers will be favoured as the one temperatures will soften the track

0:14:00 > 0:14:05in Wengen. The top ten skiers in the world ranking list get to pick their

0:14:05 > 0:14:09number so it is no coincidence Feuz is going first. They can only take

0:14:09 > 0:14:15the odd numbers. That run from Feuz is looking good.In the start houses

0:14:15 > 0:14:21Svindal. The Norwegian is the leader of the attacking team, whose photos

0:14:21 > 0:14:26have a light-hearted retro feel to them. Can Svindal be the gladiator

0:14:26 > 0:14:36and the Lauberhorn piste today. Svindal ready to tackle Wengen.

0:14:36 > 0:14:40He has been a winner here in 2016, but it wasn't the full course from

0:14:40 > 0:14:45top to bottom. He would love to get a win over the floor Lauberhorn

0:14:45 > 0:14:57track, and he's made a good start, 1100 points up over Feuz. He skimmed

0:14:57 > 0:15:03his skis on the snow mid-flight before taking off again and leaping

0:15:03 > 0:15:13over the French cantor. Still in front, Svindal taking it well. Down

0:15:13 > 0:15:20towards. Speed on the way in, fast, 108.1. On the exit, he went slightly

0:15:20 > 0:15:25high, a little below the speed registered by Beat Feuz. Under the

0:15:25 > 0:15:31railway line and away. 27.68 the next split for Feuz. Svindal is

0:15:31 > 0:15:39right in there, just four hundreds of the pace. He just allows the skis

0:15:39 > 0:15:44to glide from side to side when he is in that long Clark, looking for

0:15:44 > 0:15:49the most efficient way across the snow on the relative flat section

0:15:49 > 0:16:00before the fastest part of the course.

0:16:00 > 0:16:05course. Feuz's split, 1:57.73, and Svindal is faster, 146 kilometres

0:16:05 > 0:16:10per hour, almost through the speed trap. Svindal will give the Swiss a

0:16:10 > 0:16:21real scare. Two hundredths up, and Svindal in the hunt for top spot.

0:16:21 > 0:16:27Manages to recover his poise and flies the final roller. Svindal is

0:16:27 > 0:16:34second, he just missed it. Delight from Feuz. After two and a half

0:16:34 > 0:16:39minutes, it all came down to the finish, and Beat Feuz was the one

0:16:39 > 0:16:44with more power and strength through that turn. Svindal may be lost a bit

0:16:44 > 0:16:50on the cantor, when he had to delay setting that left skied to start the

0:16:50 > 0:16:52Canadian corner, but otherwise brilliant, changing lead away down.

0:16:52 > 0:17:00In the start-up is Thomas Dressen. The German is making a name for

0:17:00 > 0:17:03himself and his need for speed extends beyond the slopes, with a

0:17:03 > 0:17:08real passion for motorbikes. Can he ride like the wind and BA hells

0:17:08 > 0:17:17angel on the Lauberhorn today? -- and be a hells angel?

0:17:17 > 0:17:21Thomas Dressen for Germany, a big push out at the start, still

0:17:21 > 0:17:23skating, starting with the ski poles, long after control gate

0:17:23 > 0:17:29number one. Already macro, the control gates here. On the

0:17:29 > 0:17:36background in the left, the Eiger. The Jungfrau on the right, 4158

0:17:36 > 0:17:44metres above sea level, that's more than 13 and a half thousand feet.

0:17:44 > 0:17:47Thomas Dressen, within half a second of the lead of Beat Feuz of

0:17:47 > 0:17:58Switzerland, as he comes down here. They renamed it in favour of a Swiss

0:17:58 > 0:18:04downhillers of the 90s, winning the world title at Sestriere in 97.

0:18:04 > 0:18:08Under the railway bridge and away those Thomas Dressen, chasing the

0:18:08 > 0:18:14time of the Swiss leader, Beat Feuz. Not far off. A difference of half a

0:18:14 > 0:18:20second, and we follow Thomas Dressen from the helicopter, absolutely

0:18:20 > 0:18:26stunning conditions here in Wengen today, doesn't get much better. The

0:18:26 > 0:18:30Austrians over in Kitzbuehel will be hoping for similar weather in the

0:18:30 > 0:18:34build-up to their big race next Saturday. The Kitzbuehel downhill,

0:18:34 > 0:18:40the toughest of them all. This one in Wengen, the longest of the lot.

0:18:40 > 0:18:44Thomas Dressen is going well, he doesn't have a lot of experience on

0:18:44 > 0:18:46this mountain, but he's keeping himself in contention. Just over

0:18:46 > 0:18:52half a second off the silver horn jump. Slightly further away to his

0:18:52 > 0:18:56left and he might have liked. Back into the sunshine now. Trees on

0:18:56 > 0:19:04either side. Signs of fatigue, for Thomas Dressen. Still hard work to

0:19:04 > 0:19:11go, final big turn. Lands on the tales, skis into third.

0:19:11 > 0:19:14When Thomas Dressen looks back at that, he'll figure that he skied

0:19:14 > 0:19:19really well, carried good speed out of there, but he blew it on the

0:19:19 > 0:19:26finish S. Got a little high and floated out as he went into the

0:19:26 > 0:19:31second turn, the right-hander, and missed the apex, didn't get onto the

0:19:31 > 0:19:34date, skied a lot longer route, which cost him a half a second at

0:19:34 > 0:19:38the finish. -- didn't get onto the gate.

0:19:38 > 0:19:42Number seven in the start, Dominik Paris. Already a winner in downhill

0:19:42 > 0:19:51this season. Let's see if he can add to his tally. Paris, a big, powerful

0:19:51 > 0:19:57man. Oh, look at this, two hundredths off the pace Beat Feuz.

0:19:57 > 0:20:05As he comes swinging in. He has to get this right, brakes on very

0:20:05 > 0:20:08slightly before the start. Landed early, skimmed, took off again,

0:20:08 > 0:20:15touched down for the 0.65 behind, heading in the wrong direction for

0:20:15 > 0:20:23Dominik Paris. He's got work to do. As far left as he dares, then a sort

0:20:23 > 0:20:28of soft snowplough with the skis on the way in, and a slightly high line

0:20:28 > 0:20:34on the way out, but the speed is solid, and a good line, unorthodox

0:20:34 > 0:20:37but effective, and there's a train overhead is Dominik Paris comes out

0:20:37 > 0:20:44from under the bridge, going like a train. 109.1 kilometres per hour.

0:20:44 > 0:20:47His straight speed is good, but somewhat lacking on the clock,

0:20:47 > 0:20:55almost a second off the pace of Beat Feuz. Hard on the right ski, a big

0:20:55 > 0:20:59hole. That was coming off the tales of his skis, a sign he is just

0:20:59 > 0:21:04applying the brakes. He is supremely fit, but this race takes it out of

0:21:04 > 0:21:11the very best of the Alpine ski racers, such are its demands. Nobody

0:21:11 > 0:21:17faster there, quickest time of the day. 146 kilometres per hour, just

0:21:17 > 0:21:23stood slightly told off the silver horn, and now he is more than a

0:21:23 > 0:21:29second removed from the target time. That was set so far by Beat Feuz,

0:21:29 > 0:21:34who was wearing number one. Fatigue creeping in to Paris's run. You'll

0:21:34 > 0:21:40be glad to cross the line. He has gone forth.Dominik Paris, quick on

0:21:40 > 0:21:47the top part of the course, but he lost speed on BS and then a bit

0:21:47 > 0:21:53more. He is big and powerful and good at the glide, but he couldn't

0:21:53 > 0:21:58carry the speed for the tight, technical terms.Number eight, from

0:21:58 > 0:22:04Italy. Christof Innerhofer, fourth in final training. They had two

0:22:04 > 0:22:10training runs over the full course in the build-up to race day. It was

0:22:10 > 0:22:15a difficult preparation, because of the high wind following Storm

0:22:15 > 0:22:18Eleanor, which destroyed some of the hospitality areas. They had to work

0:22:18 > 0:22:22around the clock with literally thousands of people helping out to

0:22:22 > 0:22:29get it ready for downhill day. Innerhofer does a little double hop.

0:22:29 > 0:22:36Barely got airborne there. Not quite the speed we've come to expect from

0:22:36 > 0:22:38Christof Innerhofer, who hasn't had a great season by his high

0:22:38 > 0:22:45standards.

0:22:45 > 0:22:49standards. 107.2 foot oh, he's in trouble. Oh, my word! A big hit for

0:22:49 > 0:22:55Christof Innerhofer. It's like a chicane on a street circuit, like

0:22:55 > 0:22:59Monaco, no room to run out on the corner.Innerhofer came into the

0:22:59 > 0:23:05first turn really late, just managed to miss the first net but then had

0:23:05 > 0:23:12no direction and couldn't avoid the padding on left hand of he looks OK.

0:23:12 > 0:23:18-- the left-hander. He looks OK. Ready to races Matthias Mayer, the

0:23:18 > 0:23:21Olympic downhill champion who has a fierce competitive streak, whether

0:23:21 > 0:23:27it's on the piste or the golf course. Thankfully, the Austrian is

0:23:27 > 0:23:31considerably better on skis than with the putter foot he held out for

0:23:31 > 0:23:39an ace on the Lauberhorn today. Matthias Mayer, potentially be first

0:23:39 > 0:23:42of the Austrian contingent, second fastest in first training earlier in

0:23:42 > 0:23:48the week. He's never won on the Lauberhorn. He will head to Jung

0:23:48 > 0:23:57Chang in defence of his Olympic downhill title next month. -- he

0:23:57 > 0:24:03will head Pyeonchang. Nicely done, thrusting his hands forward, just a

0:24:03 > 0:24:10squat to prejudge it. Clever, not getting too much air and standing

0:24:10 > 0:24:15early on that left ski to continue the turn. To this narrow gully.

0:24:15 > 0:24:25106.9. His entrance speed. On the way out, he clocked 70.3, as he

0:24:25 > 0:24:35dives down under the railway bridge. Feuz's next split, 1:27.68, and

0:24:35 > 0:24:40Matthias Mayer is nearly a second off the pace, 108.9 through the next

0:24:40 > 0:24:45speed trap, off into the woods. Relatively flat, long, sweeping

0:24:45 > 0:24:52turn. Has to stand tall for this big, right footed turn, which he

0:24:52 > 0:24:57executes smoothly. Wrapping the body shaped ski poles around the body.

0:24:57 > 0:25:02All the top racers spent plenty of time in the wind tunnel, perfecting

0:25:02 > 0:25:11the best possible shape. 1:46.2 here. That's around 90 mph.

0:25:11 > 0:25:17Clattering the control gate on the silver horn. We have seen speed in

0:25:17 > 0:25:21the past of 100 hours per hour, but not this year. Just a bit slower.

0:25:21 > 0:25:29Matthias Mayer edging closer to a place in the top three. I'm not sure

0:25:29 > 0:25:35he will beat Beat Feuz, but he is third, on the podium.Matthias Mayer

0:25:35 > 0:25:40not quick on the top part of the course, but when the course

0:25:40 > 0:25:44conditions changed and we went on to that harder, more icy snow lower

0:25:44 > 0:25:52down after crossing under the Rob Lee bridge, the F above, he's beat

0:25:52 > 0:25:55brilliantly. -- under the railway bridge. Picking up time all the way

0:25:55 > 0:26:02down but not enough to challenge Feuz or Svindal.

0:26:03 > 0:26:10Feuz or Svindal. And is why Kelt has won period before.

0:26:10 > 0:26:13won period before. He won here in 2015. He knows his way down this

0:26:13 > 0:26:18mountain, the Austrian veteran. A slightly sluggish start, 0.66 off

0:26:18 > 0:26:25the pace, as he dives off. A good jump. Barely moved from the tuck

0:26:25 > 0:26:32position. That was a jump of real experience from Hannes Reichelt, but

0:26:32 > 0:26:37I don't know if he's got a problem the ski setup. The time is heading

0:26:37 > 0:26:44away from him, more than a second down now, and clocking that on the

0:26:44 > 0:26:55entrance at 108.3 and, on the entrance, 73.4.

0:26:55 > 0:27:00entrance, 73.4. Feuz Switzerland leading. Hannes Reichelt of Austria

0:27:00 > 0:27:03is within a second, and clocking the fastest speed of the lot on the way

0:27:03 > 0:27:11out of the railway line, 122. Difficult for the athletes to adjust

0:27:11 > 0:27:16there, with the change in vision. Again, it comes here, into the shade

0:27:16 > 0:27:25for a moment. And now this speckled sunshine down towards the next turn.

0:27:25 > 0:27:28Takes off, tucked in, looking to gather speed on the quickest part of

0:27:28 > 0:27:33the course. Oh, and it is quick, nobody has been faster there! 91 mph

0:27:33 > 0:27:39plus four Hannes Reichelt of Austria. Easy off the silver horn.

0:27:39 > 0:27:46Still within touch of Beat Feuz's lead. Has he got the fitness in his

0:27:46 > 0:27:55legs to keep it going for this crucial final ten seconds? Hannes

0:27:55 > 0:28:01Reichelt is fourth. He's just missed the podium.Good, aggressive skiing

0:28:01 > 0:28:08on the lower part of the course. Look a little hit on BS, shady and

0:28:08 > 0:28:11dark, and you can see his outside ski bouncing around, but he was

0:28:11 > 0:28:20attacking and charging on the ice on the lower part. Very similar to his

0:28:20 > 0:28:27team-mate with where he cost his race.Number 24 Austria, Vincent

0:28:27 > 0:28:34Crick Meyer, 13th in the season-long world downhill standings after four

0:28:34 > 0:28:39races, Lake Louise in Canada, beaver creek in Colorado, one more and

0:28:39 > 0:28:51Bormio. This is the first serious test. Wengen in all its glory, and

0:28:51 > 0:28:56Vincent Kriechmayr took that like a pro. That was superb. Oh, he is

0:28:56 > 0:29:02close. Within half a second of the lead of Beat Feuz. Beat Feuz's face

0:29:02 > 0:29:07on the board on the grandstand, staring down at his rivals as they

0:29:07 > 0:29:12try to take the lead away from the big Swiss racer, who waits at the

0:29:12 > 0:29:16bottom in the leader 's chair, watching everything unfolding on the

0:29:16 > 0:29:22big screen. Vincent Kriechmayr under the bridge and away, 1:27.68 is the

0:29:22 > 0:29:29target. 110.2 through the gun, all going well so far four Vincent

0:29:29 > 0:29:33Kriechmayr, aiming to be the best of the Austrians, aiming to beat the

0:29:33 > 0:29:41Swiss. Got to be early, standing on that right ski. Decent entrance, and

0:29:41 > 0:29:48exit. Bounced around slightly still lots of to deal with.

0:29:48 > 0:29:57Now he plunges down the Haneggschuss, ski spread wide. 145.

0:29:57 > 0:30:01It is quick enough. He could do some damage to the top of the leaderboard

0:30:01 > 0:30:07in Wengen in 2018. Slightly off-balance on the Silberhornsprung.

0:30:07 > 0:30:15That was not the best part of Kriechmayr's run so far. Now the

0:30:15 > 0:30:19energy sapping downhill track takes its toll. Kriechmayr rolls of the

0:30:19 > 0:30:28final jump and crosses the line to go into sixth place.Good skiing

0:30:28 > 0:30:31from Kriechmayr, putting three Austrians in the top six, but on the

0:30:31 > 0:30:36Swiss is on the top of the podium. It bodes well for Kitzbuehel next

0:30:36 > 0:30:42weekend. It will be a real rivalry between nations. What feels better,

0:30:42 > 0:30:48your victory here today are your first victory in 2012?TRANSLATION:

0:30:48 > 0:30:54They were both unbelievable. In 2012 I was in such a role. It was an

0:30:54 > 0:30:59unbelievable season, right up to the end. Now after lots of injuries I am

0:30:59 > 0:31:01back again. There were not many people who thought I could come back

0:31:01 > 0:31:08and to be back on top in Wengen is fantastic.I here you have been

0:31:08 > 0:31:13cutting off the corners as much as you can?Yes, I have some pieces of

0:31:13 > 0:31:21the safety net is left and my shoulder. It is really fast going in

0:31:21 > 0:31:29there today, and the exit was tricky.Feuz is the winner in Wengen

0:31:29 > 0:31:36for the second time in his career, ahead of the evergreen Svindal. The

0:31:36 > 0:31:43Olympic downhill champion, Mayer, was third. In the day's slalom in

0:31:43 > 0:31:47Wengen, Marcel Hirscher took his first-ever career victory on the

0:31:47 > 0:31:53piste, making it four wins in a row this season. Britain's Dave Ryding

0:31:53 > 0:32:03field to finish. Sofia Goggia led an Italian clean sweep in the downhill.

0:32:03 > 0:32:10British skier Izzy Atkin the an excellent bronze medal in the

0:32:10 > 0:32:12slopestyle competition in Aspen. Her team-mate finished sixth in the

0:32:12 > 0:32:18men's final. In an incredible snowboard final, Sean White to

0:32:18 > 0:32:23victory with an incredible score of 100, securing his spot in the US

0:32:23 > 0:32:28squad.

0:32:28 > 0:32:34squad. This is coming up on the BBC. Freddie also sees the start of two

0:32:34 > 0:32:38days of coverage from this tournament. A quality field will

0:32:38 > 0:32:42compete in snowboard slopestyle and half pipe, with both competitions

0:32:42 > 0:32:48live on the BBC Sport website. Ski Sunday Kallis extra continues next

0:32:48 > 0:32:54Sunday. That is live on the red button.

0:32:54 > 0:32:56At elite level, whether it's in alpine or freestyle,

0:32:56 > 0:32:58the pace of life and competition is frantic, always moving

0:32:58 > 0:33:01and hard to keep up with.

0:33:01 > 0:33:05Understandably, the athletes and the world they exist in seems

0:33:05 > 0:33:06out of reach.

0:33:06 > 0:33:11But what makes the sports we love so great is that anyone can do them.

0:33:11 > 0:33:14And if you need a little convincing of that, Ed's been to meet someone

0:33:14 > 0:33:20who defies body and mind every time she straps on her snowboard.

0:33:23 > 0:33:27I tend myself very lucky to have met some of the best skiers and

0:33:27 > 0:33:30snowboarders in the world. The inspirational people, but they

0:33:30 > 0:33:34usually exist in the mountains. Today I'm going to meet in

0:33:34 > 0:33:39Basingstoke. I have come to meet Rachel, or Chase, as she prefers to

0:33:39 > 0:33:44be called. She has had to face many challenges in her life, which

0:33:44 > 0:33:47includes a form of autism called Asperger's, and she has also been

0:33:47 > 0:33:51diagnosed with a rare genetic condition which affects the tissue

0:33:51 > 0:33:56that basically holds her body together and therefore puts her at

0:33:56 > 0:34:00incredibly high risk of severe injury. Despite the setbacks, it has

0:34:00 > 0:34:05not stopped her love of snowboarding and she wants to push herself one

0:34:05 > 0:34:08step further with her first trip to the mountains, no matter how

0:34:08 > 0:34:15daunting it might be.It is massive. It is very difficult. Yes, I am

0:34:15 > 0:34:21getting stressed. Good boy. Sit. I have Asperger's syndrome, which is a

0:34:21 > 0:34:25problem of social communication and executive function. So,

0:34:25 > 0:34:28understanding what people mean when they are talking, but also things

0:34:28 > 0:34:34like my working memory is really bad. My impulse control is bad, my

0:34:34 > 0:34:40emotional regulation is bad. All of the kind of ways that people

0:34:40 > 0:34:44mentally manage themselves, I struggle with that. It is endless

0:34:44 > 0:34:49thinking. Every sensory input that comes into my body I have to

0:34:49 > 0:34:52consciously process. Sometimes it overwhelms you, your overloaded. I

0:34:52 > 0:34:58also have a connective tissue disorder. Connective tissue is

0:34:58 > 0:35:02everywhere, it is what glues everything together in your body.

0:35:02 > 0:35:08For me, they hurt all the time, and partial dislocation is every day,

0:35:08 > 0:35:11multiple times every day. It also affects the autonomic nervous system

0:35:11 > 0:35:16is I find it hard to regulate my temperature. My body does not adjust

0:35:16 > 0:35:21very well if I stand up. I always joke about the fact that this messed

0:35:21 > 0:35:25up my entire body and then as burgers messed up my brain.I am

0:35:25 > 0:35:30broken head to toe. With all of that, what an error made you think

0:35:30 > 0:35:35that snowboarding would be a good idea?I have always loved snow. With

0:35:35 > 0:35:39the understanding I have come to with my diagnosis, it makes perfect

0:35:39 > 0:35:44sense. Snow deaden sound. Everything is quiet. Because everything is

0:35:44 > 0:35:50white, visually it is much easier for me. Since my nervous system got

0:35:50 > 0:35:54worse and my temperature control got worse, it is cold, so every other

0:35:54 > 0:35:59sport, I would overheat within five minutes. I could not do it any more.

0:35:59 > 0:36:06I still overheat, but I can do it a bit longer.Understanding all of

0:36:06 > 0:36:10that, how big is the task of leaving this environment and going out to

0:36:10 > 0:36:14the mountains?It is utterly terrifying. I have never done it

0:36:14 > 0:36:19before, I do not know how I will cope. I do not know how much I will

0:36:19 > 0:36:25be able to do when I am there. But at the same time, a big part of me

0:36:25 > 0:36:28is thinking, why did you learn to snowboard if you were not going to

0:36:28 > 0:36:34go and snowboard? It is so easy when your world is so small to give into

0:36:34 > 0:36:39it, and to say, I cannot do anything. I do not want the

0:36:39 > 0:36:42conditions to win. I do not want to feel that I cannot do anything so I

0:36:42 > 0:36:51have to try something. Stupidly I thought I would try this.So far,

0:36:51 > 0:36:55Chase is only ever ridden here at the Snow centre in Hemel Hempstead.

0:36:55 > 0:36:59It is a long way from the mountains but a great place to get to grips

0:36:59 > 0:37:04with snowboarding. I thought I would tag along for the red and see she

0:37:04 > 0:37:08was ready for the piste. When did you learn? I started about five

0:37:08 > 0:37:13years ago. It takes me a really long time to learn physical things. I

0:37:13 > 0:37:16have got to build up so much extra strength jewelled myself together,

0:37:16 > 0:37:21and because I have got to get over all the anxieties. I just should not

0:37:21 > 0:37:26have picked snowboarding really. But I love it. I love how kind of free

0:37:26 > 0:37:30it feels, when you get it right. When you do not get it right it is

0:37:30 > 0:37:35frustrating but when you get it right, it is amazing, like flying.

0:37:35 > 0:37:41Let's go flying.

0:37:42 > 0:37:49You have got it. You are so fast I am having trouble keeping up. There

0:37:49 > 0:37:55was a bit of worry in me that taking her out to the mountains might just

0:37:55 > 0:37:59have been a step too far, but she has got a really, really solid,

0:37:59 > 0:38:03strong style. I am confident that when we get her out of the mountains

0:38:03 > 0:38:10she will be right.

0:38:10 > 0:38:13she will be right. -- to the mountains. This is the ideal resort

0:38:13 > 0:38:17for someone like Chase with additional needs, because there are

0:38:17 > 0:38:21lots of blue and green runs, which makes it beginner and family

0:38:21 > 0:38:26friendly. When you look at the map, you see the sheer size of the

0:38:26 > 0:38:29mountain. There is lots of Chase to deal with. She has already been here

0:38:29 > 0:38:35for one day. Hopefully it has gone well. Unfortunately when I met up

0:38:35 > 0:38:39with Chase it was clear right away that things had not gone well the

0:38:39 > 0:38:42day before and her confidence was at rock bottom.I was feeling awful

0:38:42 > 0:38:48yesterday. I thought it was a massive waste of time. I felt

0:38:48 > 0:38:52unsteady. Why have you taken me on a run that is steeper than what I have

0:38:52 > 0:38:59ever done before by a long way? I thought it was too much to ask of my

0:38:59 > 0:39:02body and my brain. This was a major setback for Chase, but she had come

0:39:02 > 0:39:07this far, so I was determined to get her back on the slopes and help

0:39:07 > 0:39:14regain the confidence, that I had seen at Hemel Hempstead.Super slow

0:39:14 > 0:39:20on your heels. It is already going better than yesterday. Brilliant.

0:39:20 > 0:39:25You are doing incredibly, really, really well.I have done a slope and

0:39:25 > 0:39:32I did not fall. I want to go faster. You're starting to make that look

0:39:32 > 0:39:40really is the. Yes. Lovely, great control.

0:39:43 > 0:39:50My goodness. My goodness. That was amazing. The speedier getting and

0:39:50 > 0:39:55the control you have got between your edges is incredible. That was

0:39:55 > 0:40:01really fun.Yes. It was scary but it was really fun. That is exactly when

0:40:01 > 0:40:15it gets good. Again. That was fun. Again? Right.

0:40:15 > 0:40:17I get the impression that filming with Chase

0:40:17 > 0:40:23taught you a thing or two, Ed?

0:40:23 > 0:40:27Definitely. It changed the way I had looked at the mountain. Chase had

0:40:27 > 0:40:31come from an artificial slope to the variables of the mountain, that

0:40:31 > 0:40:35different terrain. I was terrified for, but it reinforced my belief in

0:40:35 > 0:40:41the mountain's ability to inspire. That was the point of the film.

0:40:41 > 0:40:46Chase did so well. If it has inspired you, if you have additional

0:40:46 > 0:40:49needs or no anyone who could benefit from the mountains, there is no

0:40:49 > 0:40:55shortage of organisations in the UK who could help. Good places to start

0:40:55 > 0:40:59our disability sport UK, and there are no shortage of holiday companies

0:40:59 > 0:41:03who all have bespoke programmes for people with additional needs. If you

0:41:03 > 0:41:08can, get out to the mountains.

0:41:08 > 0:41:10Now it's time for Ski Social.

0:41:10 > 0:41:12Last week we asked for your pictures and videos,

0:41:12 > 0:41:13and you didn't disappoint.

0:41:13 > 0:41:16We even said we didn't expect you to match Paddy Graham,

0:41:16 > 0:41:18but you know what, you gave it a good go.

0:41:18 > 0:41:21It's given us a great glimpse of the next generation, and a nice

0:41:21 > 0:41:22variety of skis and snowboards.

0:41:22 > 0:41:24Clip of the week goes to 13-year-old Ethan.

0:41:24 > 0:41:27An absolutely stomping a double back flip.

0:41:27 > 0:41:33Nice work. We will see you in Beijing, 2022.

0:41:33 > 0:41:34We've had some questions, too.

0:41:34 > 0:41:37Shreevo wants to take his wife to a World Cup race for her 40th

0:41:37 > 0:41:40birthday and wants to know which one you'd recommend?

0:41:40 > 0:41:44If you want de Monte Carlo ski racing, it has got to be Kitzbuehel,

0:41:44 > 0:41:50it has the crowds, celebrities, Arnold Schwarzenegger. Come on. If

0:41:50 > 0:41:55you want a really nice, quiet, relaxing trip away before Christmas,

0:41:55 > 0:42:00how about Italy. The Dolomites, beautiful scenery and great skiing.

0:42:00 > 0:42:05You did not specify, Shreevo, whether you wanted a ski Arsenal

0:42:05 > 0:42:09World Cup, so this is our equivalent. It is next week, the

0:42:09 > 0:42:13biggest snowboard competition on European soil. If you want to try it

0:42:13 > 0:42:18yourself, you have got the P 60, an enormous snow park full of

0:42:18 > 0:42:22holiday-maker level jumps and drills.

0:42:22 > 0:42:27Sarah has asked for tips on skiing bumps and moguls.

0:42:27 > 0:42:30I feel a practical demonstration coming on. She did not specify

0:42:30 > 0:42:37whether it was on a snowboard or skis. We are in Wengen, and it is a

0:42:37 > 0:42:42T-bar called Bombs, with bombs on it.Awesome, two of my favourite

0:42:42 > 0:42:48things.

0:42:53 > 0:42:58When you are skiing moguls, the most important thing to do is to plant

0:42:58 > 0:43:05your pole on top of the bomb and extend and flex your legs do.

0:43:05 > 0:43:11Personally, I prefer to do moguls when they have got a bit of powder

0:43:11 > 0:43:13on them.

0:43:13 > 0:43:15That's all we have time for this week.

0:43:15 > 0:43:16Next week, we are in the aforementioned Kitzbuehel

0:43:16 > 0:43:18for the biggest race on the downhill circuit.
