0:01:00 > 0:01:13The Streif. It is the daddy of all downhills. The most feared, the most
0:01:13 > 0:01:23revered. It is a fortress. The biggest of spectacles. Never
0:01:23 > 0:01:32underestimate it. Attack is the best form of defence. It is make... Or
0:01:32 > 0:01:40break. It pushes the body to the absolute limits. Risk versus reward.
0:01:40 > 0:01:52Anything less than 100%, and you are beat. Who dares wins.Instead of
0:01:52 > 0:01:55banging out these cliches, shall we actually see what happens on the
0:01:55 > 0:02:04Streif?Sounds like a great idea.
0:02:17 > 0:02:21Hello and welcome to Kitzbuhel.
0:02:21 > 0:02:23We're here for the most talked about, most feared, most thrilling
0:02:23 > 0:02:26race on the World Cup calendar.
0:02:26 > 0:02:29There's a reason why those cliches exist - years of racing
0:02:29 > 0:02:32on the Streif has taught us that they're all true.
0:02:32 > 0:02:34So we're hoping you'll forgive us for being a tad
0:02:34 > 0:02:35excited about this one.
0:02:35 > 0:02:43And if that's not enough for you, later on we'll have highlights
0:02:44 > 0:02:46of the women's racing from Cortina.
0:02:46 > 0:02:48It's the biggest race on the women's tour,
0:02:48 > 0:02:50and they've got two downhills for the price of one
0:02:50 > 0:02:53after the cancelled race from Val D'Isere before Christmas
0:02:53 > 0:02:56was re-arranged for Friday.
0:02:56 > 0:03:02First though it is the Hahnenkamm.
0:03:02 > 0:03:04The race marks the return of Aksel Lund Svindal to Kitzbuhel,
0:03:04 > 0:03:07whose trouble on the Streif in 2016 resulted in two knee
0:03:07 > 0:03:09surgeries and a lengthy period on the sidelines.
0:03:09 > 0:03:12Graham's been to meet the big Norwegian.
0:03:12 > 0:03:16It is one of those places, when you drive into the valley before the
0:03:16 > 0:03:23race you are excited because it's Kitzbuhel but you know it's going to
0:03:23 > 0:03:29be uncomfortable on the starting gate, that is how it is. Kitzbuhel
0:03:29 > 0:03:34is legendary for good reasons. When you ski, you feel how difficult it
0:03:34 > 0:03:41is because it's kind of like driving in Monte Carlo with a Formula One
0:03:41 > 0:03:49car. On the racetrack if you go out maybe you go onto some sand, but
0:03:49 > 0:03:55otherwise you hit the wall, and it is like that in Kitzbuhel. It is
0:03:55 > 0:04:02rare to just hit some gates. That kind of shows why the intensity is
0:04:02 > 0:04:13higher, right?Do you ever get dreams in the middle of the summer
0:04:13 > 0:04:20racing it?If I do, it is probably more nightmares.Aksel Lund Svindal
0:04:20 > 0:04:30is ready to tackle the Streif...
0:04:34 > 0:04:41How nervous will you be going back, having not skied on that course
0:04:41 > 0:04:48since you crashed there couple of seasons ago?Nervous for sure. This
0:04:48 > 0:04:53is not going to be famous last words or anything, I think I have good
0:04:53 > 0:04:59mentality in the sense that when something happens like that, I never
0:04:59 > 0:05:04blamed it on bad luck or anything I cannot control because that makes me
0:05:04 > 0:05:09nervous but I always blame myself. A lot of the other guys skied that
0:05:09 > 0:05:16section and pulled it off. I tried to skied it fast and I didn't pull
0:05:16 > 0:05:27it off so I just have to make sure I don't do that same mistake.
0:05:27 > 0:05:30don't do that same mistake.Svindal is out to prove he is the number
0:05:30 > 0:05:37one. He is second! From results this season, you would assume you are
0:05:37 > 0:05:43back and skiing at 100% but it is far from that, is it, with the knee?
0:05:43 > 0:05:47In races it is 100% but the preparations are different than they
0:05:47 > 0:05:52have been in the past. I have raced all the races but I haven't had two
0:05:52 > 0:05:59days of training. That's between races, the knee is swelling up and
0:05:59 > 0:06:04some paint and that's what I've been able to handle. It is not an ideal
0:06:04 > 0:06:09situation but you know, I am an experienced guy so still able to
0:06:09 > 0:06:14pull it off.A very insightful interview.
0:06:14 > 0:06:17You touched on it last week, Gra, but Aksel is basically
0:06:17 > 0:06:19saying he's not doing the training runs properly.
0:06:19 > 0:06:22Does that not put him at a significant disadvantage?
0:06:22 > 0:06:27It is definitely a disadvantage but Svindal has such experience on these
0:06:27 > 0:06:33downhill courses he can exist on muscle memory, but it is very
0:06:33 > 0:06:38wearing having a swollen knee so I get the feeling he cannot do this
0:06:38 > 0:06:43for ever.
0:06:43 > 0:06:48Beat Feuz is in great form, isn't he?
0:06:48 > 0:06:53He was in the lead, three quarters of a second up but ran wide in the
0:06:53 > 0:06:57compression onto the Traverse and then stacked it into the net so he
0:06:57 > 0:07:03will have the mental block to get over.Looking at the World Cup
0:07:03 > 0:07:07standings, Feuz and Svindal are opening a gap between them and the
0:07:07 > 0:07:12rest of the pack, will this mirrors the standings?Dominik Paris is the
0:07:12 > 0:07:16only other race to record a victory but this is Kitzbuhel, there are so
0:07:16 > 0:07:20many people who want to win this. It is more important than an Olympic
0:07:20 > 0:07:29medal to some of them. The Italians are flying as well on this course.
0:07:29 > 0:07:32Who is going to win?I'm going to go with last year's winner, Dominik
0:07:32 > 0:07:40Paris. If he can get his glide on, he will be up there for sure.It is
0:07:40 > 0:07:45time to get the race under way, like the fans we return every year and we
0:07:45 > 0:07:50know that experience is vital and mistakes can be catastrophic but
0:07:50 > 0:07:59victory here is glorious. There is nothing quite like the Hahnenkamm.
0:07:59 > 0:08:05The toughest course in the world!
0:08:07 > 0:08:18Oh, that's horrible! What run! Plunging down.
0:08:18 > 0:08:23Plunging down. The greatest race of all!
0:08:24 > 0:08:28all!Over a metre of new snow has fallen over the last few days but
0:08:28 > 0:08:33hundredths of course workers have been here scraping it off, down to
0:08:33 > 0:08:34this, sheet ice.
0:08:38 > 0:08:44Hard on the lest ski as you come through the first turn. -- the left
0:08:44 > 0:08:49ski. Straight down into the compression. Through the
0:08:49 > 0:08:54compression, setting up for the carousel. You can either ride on the
0:08:54 > 0:08:59bank like that
0:08:59 > 0:09:04bank like that or stick your ski into the turn. Stay high on the
0:09:04 > 0:09:14line. Do everything you can to stay out of that net. Now you are out
0:09:14 > 0:09:24onto the gliding section which gives you a chance to catch your breath.
0:09:24 > 0:09:32New snow on the course, just cut the speed down ever so slightly. As you
0:09:32 > 0:09:38go over the rise. It is rough and bumpy again down here. Heading
0:09:38 > 0:09:45towards this rough area.
0:09:46 > 0:09:49towards this rough area. This turn here is so crucial to carry the
0:09:49 > 0:09:55speed in the mid part of the course. Now I suspect Aksel Lund Svindal
0:09:55 > 0:09:59might be a little nervous coming into this section, and he's not the
0:09:59 > 0:10:08only one because it is the Hausberg. Over the jump, down and into the
0:10:08 > 0:10:15compression. Hard on that right ski. Over the role, taking a high line on
0:10:15 > 0:10:22this bumpy Traverse. Last jump! Flying towards it now. Oh my word,
0:10:22 > 0:10:34it is fast down here. Great speed off that last jump. Wow! My word! It
0:10:34 > 0:10:40has frozen solid on the lower part of the course and the speed is
0:10:40 > 0:10:47really, really high. It is going to be a test again! Over to Matt
0:10:47 > 0:10:50Chilton for the commentary. COMMENTATOR: Downhill day in
0:10:50 > 0:10:56Kitzbuhel is the most important skiing event of the year in Austria.
0:10:56 > 0:11:0045,000 people have gathered for the greatest occasion in winter sport,
0:11:00 > 0:11:12man versus the Streif. An Austrian will open the race for 2018.
0:11:12 > 0:11:21Reichelt is away. Hard on the right foot. 91 kilometres per hour, a
0:11:21 > 0:11:27flight of 38 metres. 105 kilometres per hour his exit speed with the
0:11:27 > 0:11:34carousel turn, one of the hardest turns in World Cup ski racing.
0:11:34 > 0:11:40Stands hard on that left ski, this is where Miller wrote the
0:11:40 > 0:11:47advertising banner several years ago. Now we will find Reichelt
0:11:47 > 0:11:53further down the course. Smooth flight. Around the minute mark,
0:11:53 > 0:12:07still a lot of skiing below. Flies and lands gently off there, now
0:12:07 > 0:12:12comes into Hausberg, the big inflatable arch. Has to get the
0:12:12 > 0:12:17flight correct, has to land solidly and give himself a high line.
0:12:17 > 0:12:26Heading on to the famous bumpy Traverse. Reichelt was a winner here
0:12:26 > 0:12:31back in 2014, then he injured himself and wasn't able to head to
0:12:31 > 0:12:36the Olympics in Sochi. That was a little scruffy on the landing. On
0:12:36 > 0:12:42the big Traverse, lower than he might like but keeping control.
0:12:42 > 0:12:48There is a long there, a little airborne. One final jump to go. Look
0:12:48 > 0:13:01at the scenes here in Kitzbuhel. Reichelt has won this race on home
0:13:01 > 0:13:06snow before.
0:13:07 > 0:13:19snow before. I think that is a very good run from him.
0:13:22 > 0:13:30Innerhoffer. Fell last weekend. He covers a distance of 38 metres
0:13:30 > 0:13:48airborne. He is ahead of Reichelt. Airborne...
0:13:48 > 0:13:56Airborne... Nicely done, off into the forest. Half a second up, and
0:13:56 > 0:14:00intermediate number too and Innerhoffer is not far away from
0:14:00 > 0:14:08Reichelt's time. Has to get the good line into the big jump with that
0:14:08 > 0:14:11awkward landing. One of the most feared elements anywhere in the
0:14:11 > 0:14:18world of ski
0:14:18 > 0:14:21world of ski racing, the Hausberg cantor, and the big Traverse that
0:14:21 > 0:14:28follows. These are smooth turns.
0:14:28 > 0:14:31follows. These are smooth turns. He is low in the line, recovers but is
0:14:31 > 0:14:36going to be in trouble on the Traverse. So high, clattered the
0:14:36 > 0:14:41control gate. Now he's in real bother. He's done the double, he has
0:14:41 > 0:14:48fallen again in Kitzbuhel. A perfect run on the top part of the
0:14:48 > 0:14:54course. He likes it hard and icy but on the lower section he just went
0:14:54 > 0:15:01for it. Came over the Hausberg, got late in the line. He actually hit
0:15:01 > 0:15:07the gate he was so high. Left it too late, then his outside ski went up
0:15:07 > 0:15:13into the air, we call that a Ninja kick but thankfully he's OK. This is
0:15:13 > 0:15:22the best downhiller of the season so far, Aksel Lund Svindal, the veteran
0:15:22 > 0:15:30Norwegian wearing the red beard, the leader in the downhill standings.
0:15:35 > 0:15:44Hot on the heels of Reichelt. He has never won the Kitzbuhel downhill but
0:15:44 > 0:15:51did win the super-G. The super-G on Friday was a peculiar affair, ending
0:15:51 > 0:15:56at the Hausberg cantor. He's desperate for downhill success. To
0:15:56 > 0:16:03make him one of the all-time greats.
0:16:07 > 0:16:12Two Darren Hill wins this season. He would give those up for success
0:16:12 > 0:16:26today. He has won 14 downhill races in total.
0:16:26 > 0:16:32in total. Svindal gets set for the cantor, this is far he crashed at
0:16:32 > 0:16:37the end of his season with knee damage two years ago. He might be
0:16:37 > 0:16:42paying the price were that caution as he comes onto the big Traverse.
0:16:42 > 0:16:49The Austrians are happy, his lead is safe. Svindal will not win in 2018.
0:16:49 > 0:16:56He may have to return for another go next year. How close can he go? It
0:16:56 > 0:17:06is good enough for second, provisionally.
0:17:06 > 0:17:11provisionally. Down the area he was quite good. Just went wide going on
0:17:11 > 0:17:22to the jump and as he went over the jump, he took a split from the gas.
0:17:25 > 0:17:33Beat Feuz is something of a star in Switzerland. He is picking up awards
0:17:33 > 0:17:43and mixing with the likes of Roger Federer, can he take victory today?
0:17:43 > 0:17:58Beat Feuz from Switzerland. Can he do Kitzbuhel double?
0:18:02 > 0:18:1346 metres of flight. He has got to grips with the Streif this year.
0:18:13 > 0:18:20Eating up the ground here. He is a massive unit, Beat Feuz. Dabbles
0:18:20 > 0:18:24with the netting but gets away with it and as we pick him up further
0:18:24 > 0:18:33down the chorus, he is travelling at 86 kilometres per hour.
0:18:36 > 0:18:4086 kilometres per hour. Beat Feuz was in danger of having his leg
0:18:40 > 0:18:45amputated. He had a terrible run of injuries, blood poisoning was the
0:18:45 > 0:18:51culprit. Look at him now. All courses for that Kitzbuhel double
0:18:51 > 0:18:58potentially. He is closing in. The Swiss would love to get one over on
0:18:58 > 0:19:09the Austrians on the most famous Austrian mountain of all. Beat Feuz
0:19:09 > 0:19:13swings in towards the Hausberg cantor. That is how to do it. The
0:19:13 > 0:19:19line on the Traverse is high, it is perfect, he has got the green light.
0:19:19 > 0:19:27This speed is good. A massive jump, took it in his stride. Now the final
0:19:27 > 0:19:32roller, Beat Feuz for Switzerland, high, elegant, and first in
0:19:32 > 0:19:41Kitzbuhel. Beat Feuz is on for it the Kitzbuhel double. He really
0:19:41 > 0:19:46attacked it. He complained that the jobs are going too far but on that
0:19:46 > 0:19:53run he went for it, 46 metres, nails the top part of the course. Lost a
0:19:53 > 0:19:57little bit of time on the glide but picked it up brilliantly on the
0:19:57 > 0:20:11lower part of the course. Next Austrian to take his chance
0:20:11 > 0:20:13Austrian to take his chance Vincent Kriechmayr. Kriechmayr sets out to
0:20:13 > 0:20:22attempt to conquer Kitzbuhel. That is good. That is vast. Long flight,
0:20:22 > 0:20:2640 metres, look at the speed and commitment from Kriechmayr and the
0:20:26 > 0:20:33green light is on. He has an advantage of a quarter of a second.
0:20:33 > 0:20:37As he approaches the Steihang, needs to stand hard on the left foot and
0:20:37 > 0:20:44avoid any contact. He got away with it and heads into the forest, has a
0:20:44 > 0:20:48lead of three tenths of a second. Kriechmayr gliding nicely. A chance
0:20:48 > 0:20:53to refuel.
0:20:57 > 0:21:02to refuel. The Austrians wait and they have seen that, half a second.
0:21:02 > 0:21:09Now the noise levels start to rise at the foot as Kriechmayr starts to
0:21:09 > 0:21:16exert control over his Kitzbuhel downhill run. It is getting better
0:21:16 > 0:21:22for Kriechmayr. .79 in front. He has got to hold it together here. Get as
0:21:22 > 0:21:29close as he dares to these red control gates. Keep up this speed,
0:21:29 > 0:21:37still really positive, .64,. He has got to get the line right on the way
0:21:37 > 0:21:43in towards the big jump that takes them the Traverse. The landing has
0:21:43 > 0:21:50to be soft and high, Kriechmayr, that is all he has got left. Onto
0:21:50 > 0:21:56the Traverse, a little lower than is ideal. Has he got the strength to
0:21:56 > 0:22:01claw this bag, outside of the blue racing line, that might have cost
0:22:01 > 0:22:07him the chance to lead. Vincent Kriechmayr and Austria goes for the
0:22:07 > 0:22:14line in the fog. When those green lights were going on for Vincent
0:22:14 > 0:22:18Kriechmayr, the Austrian crowd were going wild. But they know that when
0:22:18 > 0:22:23you come onto that Traverse you need to be high and up by the gate so you
0:22:23 > 0:22:30can carry this speed. He was about ten metres low and off-line and that
0:22:30 > 0:22:41is where he lost the race. In the start-up is Thomas Dressen. Of the
0:22:41 > 0:22:47piste he loves the great outdoors. Can he cascade down the Streif and
0:22:47 > 0:22:52make a big splash with victory in Kitzbuhel? Number 19 Thomas Dressen
0:22:52 > 0:23:01from Germany. He is on his way in Kitzbuhel. Crashed out of this
0:23:01 > 0:23:06competition 12 months ago. Finished third in Beaver Creek in December.
0:23:06 > 0:23:13That is one of the other really tough World Cup downhill races in
0:23:13 > 0:23:19Colorado. Then level with Beat Feuz at the early intermediate guideline
0:23:19 > 0:23:25times, he comes diving down towards the Steihang. He races for Germany
0:23:25 > 0:23:33but he grew up training in Austria. He is sponsored by an Austrian ski
0:23:33 > 0:23:38resort where his father died tragically in a ski lift accident in
0:23:38 > 0:23:442005. One of eight people who perished after a helicopter dropped
0:23:44 > 0:23:51a concrete block on top of a cable car. The most horrific day in the
0:23:51 > 0:23:56mountains. Now Thomas Dressen is moving along nicely. Good gliding
0:23:56 > 0:24:03through the forest. No German has won World Cup downhill for 13 years,
0:24:03 > 0:24:17the last man to win in Kitzbuhel won in 1979. His son is racing later in
0:24:17 > 0:24:24the competition. He is watching today. He was from West Germany and
0:24:24 > 0:24:291979, that is how long it has been. Thomas Dressen holding it together,
0:24:29 > 0:24:33he has got sunshine to show the way, he has a window in the weather and
0:24:33 > 0:24:42he can take more chances. He has got a tenth of a second on the Traverse,
0:24:42 > 0:24:47he has still got the green light. Last section now, Thomas Dressen
0:24:47 > 0:24:51from Germany, skiing to make a little bit of history in Kitzbuhel.
0:24:51 > 0:25:01He tucks in for the line, Thomas Dressen takes first position! By two
0:25:01 > 0:25:05tenths of a second. So unfortunate for a Thomas Dressen because the sun
0:25:05 > 0:25:10has come out, because he was ranked tenth in the world, 19 was the
0:25:10 > 0:25:17number was left that no one wanted, but this has counted, he took his
0:25:17 > 0:25:21opportunities, skied brilliantly at the top and as he came on to the
0:25:21 > 0:25:28final Traverse he was high and that was the difference between his run
0:25:28 > 0:25:31and his competitor, he could carry it to the finish and what a way to
0:25:31 > 0:25:39come into the finish. In the lead, incredible.
0:25:41 > 0:25:50incredible. Another German now this is Andreas Sander encouraged out of
0:25:50 > 0:26:00the start by the German team.
0:26:00 > 0:26:03the start by the German team. 43 metres, long flight for Andreas
0:26:03 > 0:26:08Sander and he is not far behind his team-mates, the Germans mean
0:26:08 > 0:26:13business here today.
0:26:14 > 0:26:16business here today. The investment into the German ski team is
0:26:16 > 0:26:22beginning to bring dividends. Off he goes into the woods and hot on the
0:26:22 > 0:26:27heels of his team-mate, that is a massive jump into the sunshine off
0:26:27 > 0:26:32the counter. The weather was good for Thomas Dressen and it is good
0:26:32 > 0:26:37for his team-mate as well he has flattened the control gate, that has
0:26:37 > 0:26:44probably cost him the lead but he may still register a personal best.
0:26:44 > 0:26:49Andreas Sander is theirs and the Germans are on fire. Andreas Sander
0:26:49 > 0:26:54into fifth place. This race is far from over. If the track starts to
0:26:54 > 0:26:58speed up as well we could see the biggest surprise in Kitzbuhel
0:26:58 > 0:27:03history.
0:27:07 > 0:27:10history. This is Marc Gisin from Switzerland, his sister is the
0:27:10 > 0:27:19women's Olympic downhill champion. He shared the -- she shared the gold
0:27:19 > 0:27:22medal in Sochi. Marc Gisin is returning from injury and returning
0:27:22 > 0:27:28from form. He has still got sunshine to help show the way. Down the
0:27:28 > 0:27:35Streif and he has made a good start. The Swiss had the late for a long
0:27:35 > 0:27:43time courtesy of Beat Feuz. Could Marc Gisin give the Swiss another
0:27:43 > 0:27:48chance at victory in Kitzbuhel? Here's a little scruffy there. Hands
0:27:48 > 0:27:53down on the snow as he gets thrown around on the big Traverse. Stands
0:27:53 > 0:27:59on the left ski and takes the little roller. And now tucks in for the
0:27:59 > 0:28:04line. I don't think he will win it, but it could be Olympic selection
0:28:04 > 0:28:09for Marc Gisin. That was an impressive run for Marc Gisin
0:28:09 > 0:28:13because the sun which came out for a Thomas Dressen has now gone back in
0:28:13 > 0:28:21again. Marc Gisin really fast, attacked the whole run from start to
0:28:21 > 0:28:27finish. It was a disappointing day for the defending champion who had
0:28:27 > 0:28:31an uncharacteristically scrappy run which left in 11th position. On the
0:28:31 > 0:28:36podium with him 12 ago was the Frenchman and he had a less
0:28:36 > 0:28:42accessible day as he fell victim to trouble on the Streif. Also losing
0:28:42 > 0:28:52the battle was American Jared Goldberg.
0:28:52 > 0:28:57Goldberg. Finally on a day of surprises, the relatively unknown
0:28:57 > 0:29:04Frenchman nipped in to finish in seventh place. Confirmation of an
0:29:04 > 0:29:06unforgettable day for Thomas Dressen. He is their champion in
0:29:06 > 0:29:11Kitzbuhel.
0:29:12 > 0:29:14Kitzbuhel. They say you need experience to win in Kitzbuhel but
0:29:14 > 0:29:19last year, you did not even make the finish here. That is what they told
0:29:19 > 0:29:27me. You need a lot of experience. I watched someone, he is a real role
0:29:27 > 0:29:34model to me. I thought it was not a bad run and I tried to do the same
0:29:34 > 0:29:39as he did. When I looked out of the start gate, I thought it looked
0:29:39 > 0:29:44really good and I tried to push from the top to the bottom.
0:29:44 > 0:29:47While the fastest men in the world have been competing in Kitzbuhel,
0:29:47 > 0:29:49the women's World Cup is in Cortina, Italy.
0:29:49 > 0:29:57Chemmy Alcott has been there for us to endulge in a feast of racing.
0:30:00 > 0:30:03This is one of the toughest challenges on the women's World Cup
0:30:03 > 0:30:09circuit. Set in the inspiring Dolomites, the athlete start by
0:30:09 > 0:30:14launching themselves towards the top section of the course, which is
0:30:14 > 0:30:18relatively easy but then they have to tackle this ball away, really
0:30:18 > 0:30:22difficult left footed double. The toughest and most challenging part
0:30:22 > 0:30:29of this course is this. The racers enter with a relatively serene 30
0:30:29 > 0:30:35mph before launching up to 75 mph in a matter of seconds. This year it is
0:30:35 > 0:30:42even tougher with double airtime. On the exit, you have a jump. The exit
0:30:42 > 0:30:47of this double it is imperative that the athletes, tied to set themselves
0:30:47 > 0:30:51up for the technical session following. It is also where Lindsey
0:30:51 > 0:30:56Vonn crashed twice in the races here one year ago. We call this the money
0:30:56 > 0:31:00gate, because of the two rain coming into it, the athletes cannot see the
0:31:00 > 0:31:09gate, they have to make the switch in the air are blind. As if the
0:31:09 > 0:31:12challenge was not difficult enough, the girls had to do it twice in two
0:31:12 > 0:31:13days this weekend.
0:31:29 > 0:31:35A little over the tales of their skis but she gets away with it.
0:31:35 > 0:31:49Floats that jump away. Chasing the time of the current leader,
0:31:49 > 0:31:55Schmidhoffer of Austria. Building all the way. The finale to come,
0:31:55 > 0:32:01this man-made jump celebrating Cortina's hosting of the 2021 World
0:32:01 > 0:32:09Championships, Goggia is into the lead. She comes in with a second
0:32:09 > 0:32:14lead. She doesn't normally like this run but that was super clean and
0:32:14 > 0:32:21superfast.The incredible Mikaela Shiffrin from Colorado, still in her
0:32:21 > 0:32:25early 20s. The Olympic and world slalom champion has developed into a
0:32:25 > 0:32:39downhill skier. She was in front of Goggia. Mikaela Shiffrin is flying.
0:32:39 > 0:32:45She has got the quickest speed of the race so far. 131.3 kilometres
0:32:45 > 0:32:52per hour as she stands on the right ski for this huge sweeping turn. 101
0:32:52 > 0:33:00through the second speed trap, trailing Goggia by 7.4. It's looking
0:33:00 > 0:33:07like it might be good enough for a top three finish for Mikaela
0:33:07 > 0:33:15Shiffrin. Second for the moment. The great Lindsey Vonn, wearing number
0:33:15 > 0:33:2213 today. Familiar fiddling with the hands around the ski pole handles.
0:33:22 > 0:33:2878 World Cup winds in her
0:33:28 > 0:33:4278 World Cup winds in her career. -- wins. 135 kilometres per hour, a
0:33:42 > 0:33:48little wild there. It is an unusual racing line, let's see if it pays
0:33:48 > 0:33:57dividends for Lindsey Vonn. She's absolutely charging.
0:33:57 > 0:34:00absolutely charging. 56.97. Her mistake has cost her a little bit of
0:34:00 > 0:34:08time but it is still green for the American. Some mistakes have crept
0:34:08 > 0:34:14into Lindsey Vonn's downhill. Goggia leading for Italy, Mikaela Shiffrin
0:34:14 > 0:34:20second for the USA, Lindsey Vonn has completed her run and goes into
0:34:20 > 0:34:26second. She has missed the win. Two Americans on the podium now.She
0:34:26 > 0:34:30nailed the top section of that course, then huge mistakes getting
0:34:30 > 0:34:35caught on the back on the inside ski and a really good fight to stay
0:34:35 > 0:34:40inside the course but it through her race away and she came into second.
0:34:40 > 0:34:44I'm really happy with what I've achieved as a result, not so happy
0:34:44 > 0:34:59with my ski performance but still I attacked in style and we got it.
0:34:59 > 0:35:01Mancuso Has made the difficult decision to retire after struggling
0:35:01 > 0:35:07with a hip injury for the last few years. After 36 podiums and four
0:35:07 > 0:35:13Olympic medals, how did you decide today was it?It was really hard but
0:35:13 > 0:35:17skiing has been a huge part of my life, I love it but unfortunately
0:35:17 > 0:35:22with an injury it has held me back but everything else is great. It's
0:35:22 > 0:35:27been an incredible journey, I love travelling, I love the experiences I
0:35:27 > 0:35:31have made and I will continue just to be involved in the future as best
0:35:31 > 0:35:39I can and figure out where the next journey will take me.Goggia
0:35:39 > 0:35:45claiming her first ever home victory today making it back to back wins in
0:35:45 > 0:35:53downhill. Setting us up beautifully for another battle tomorrow. Yet
0:35:53 > 0:36:05again, Cortina delivers four-day two of racing. Goggia attributed her win
0:36:05 > 0:36:12to the tough piste.
0:36:12 > 0:36:19Wearing the red bib, and what a beautiful day in Cortina on this
0:36:19 > 0:36:29Saturday. Her team-mate leading the way at this stage.
0:36:30 > 0:36:35way at this stage. Goggia is in trouble. What a recovery! Her airbag
0:36:35 > 0:36:40has inflated. Skiers wear these protective airbags within their
0:36:40 > 0:36:45suits. She's all right.
0:36:47 > 0:36:51suits. She's all right. Weirather from fantastic ski racing pedigree,
0:36:51 > 0:36:56both of her parents were World Cup winners and her mother was an
0:36:56 > 0:37:09Olympic medallist as well. She races for Lipton
0:37:13 > 0:37:21-- Liechtenstein. Weirather, putting down a fantastic run. 1.2 seconds
0:37:21 > 0:37:26clear of the leader at the base of the mountain. All she has to do is
0:37:26 > 0:37:36stay on her feet, and Weirather will lead the way in Cortina. Nearly a
0:37:36 > 0:37:42second and a half quicker. Lindsey Vonn was second on Friday,
0:37:42 > 0:37:52determined to go one better in this Saturday downhill. The way she goes.
0:37:52 > 0:38:0178 World Cup wins to her name, will 79 come today? The early signs are
0:38:01 > 0:38:06promising, four tenths faster than Weirather at the intermediate. And
0:38:06 > 0:38:11Weirather's lead may well be about to end. She hammers towards the
0:38:11 > 0:38:15finishing line, on her way potentially to World Cup win number
0:38:15 > 0:38:2379. Off the final jump, and home. Yes, she has got it. Nearly one
0:38:23 > 0:38:30second. Lindsey Vonn in a different class, leading in Cortina.
0:38:30 > 0:38:33Capitalising on the amazing conditions, full of confidence,
0:38:33 > 0:38:37skiing flawlessly from top to bottom. On the limit with the inside
0:38:37 > 0:38:51hand down but a fantastic run there. Number 14, the American Jacqueline
0:38:51 > 0:38:55Wiles who was struggling for financial support to race on the
0:38:55 > 0:39:02World Cup. So Lindsey Vonn made her first ambassador of the Lindsey Vonn
0:39:02 > 0:39:07foundation. On course potentially for a podium place. She's in
0:39:07 > 0:39:12trouble, she's got them sideways, then aerial! Somehow she stayed on
0:39:12 > 0:39:21the track. What a run from Jacqueline Wiles! It is still fast.
0:39:21 > 0:39:26It has been fun to watch, she will be relieved when it finishes. So
0:39:26 > 0:39:33Lindsey Vonn leading the way here in Cortina as Jacqueline Wiles comes
0:39:33 > 0:39:38off the final jump and on the podium again she's third! Was that the
0:39:38 > 0:39:46perfect run?It was pretty solid. I was happy with the way I skied, more
0:39:46 > 0:39:51clean than yesterday. Just really happy with my performance. I have
0:39:51 > 0:39:55really good self confidence now and I'm in a perfect place going into
0:39:55 > 0:39:59the Olympics. Are you gutted in the little way that Goggia didn't finish
0:39:59 > 0:40:05and you couldn't have a clean battle?Yes, we are really
0:40:05 > 0:40:08competitive and she knows what's coming but she knew I would be
0:40:08 > 0:40:13charging today. I think she pushed the limits and that's what happens
0:40:13 > 0:40:18with ski racing. I almost pushed it too far yesterday but she will be
0:40:18 > 0:40:21tough for the rest of the season and especially the Olympics.Another
0:40:21 > 0:40:27epic weekend of racing here from Cortina. Goggia yesterday taking her
0:40:27 > 0:40:33first ever home victory, and today Lindsey Vonn one step closer to
0:40:33 > 0:40:44those record books.
0:40:46 > 0:40:52Kristofferson took his first win of the season, beating Marcel Hirscher
0:40:52 > 0:40:56into second. It is that time of year when the ski racing comes thick and
0:40:56 > 0:41:02fast. On Tuesday, Ski Sunday Extra has live coverage of this famous
0:41:02 > 0:41:09night slalom from Schladming. It is loud, brash, and a race that always
0:41:09 > 0:41:16delivers. Watch it live on the red button, online and on your connected
0:41:16 > 0:41:23TV. Lizzy Yarnold narrowly missed out on a medal as she finished
0:41:23 > 0:41:32fourth. It was her best result since her bronze medal last November. Now
0:41:32 > 0:41:38it is time for ski social.
0:41:38 > 0:41:39After last week's feature
0:41:39 > 0:41:41on Chase, the snowboarder with additional needs,
0:41:41 > 0:41:44we've had a couple of amazing videos sent our way to further prove
0:41:44 > 0:41:46that the slopes are for everyone.
0:41:46 > 0:41:49This is Oscar, aged 9, catching a ride with Stefan
0:41:49 > 0:41:52from the Swiss ski school in Saenenmoser - the shreaks
0:41:52 > 0:41:56of delight tell you everything you need to know.
0:41:56 > 0:42:01I've had a go on one of those.
0:42:01 > 0:42:04It is so much fun.
0:42:04 > 0:42:09And Rachel has sent in a video of her incredible 10-year-old
0:42:09 > 0:42:12daughter Eilidh, who's completely blind but has been skiing,
0:42:12 > 0:42:13following a voice amplifier and her guide Jamie.
0:42:13 > 0:42:15We absolutely love this.
0:42:15 > 0:42:16Please keep sending your pictures and videos in.
0:42:16 > 0:42:20There's always a great variety of terrain, styles and skill,
0:42:20 > 0:42:21and we welcome everyone on Ski Social.
0:42:21 > 0:42:23Use the hashtag Ski Sunday.
0:42:23 > 0:42:25And don't be shy or embarrassed - we're just as likely
0:42:25 > 0:42:28to show a fail or fall, especially if you can get back up
0:42:28 > 0:42:34again like Ben here.
0:42:34 > 0:42:37Keep your questions coming too - we always get a few
0:42:37 > 0:42:38after you've done a course run.
0:42:38 > 0:42:41Mike wants to know if you get more than one go at it,
0:42:41 > 0:42:44and Sarah's been asking why you do it with a handheld camera
0:42:44 > 0:42:47instead of a helmet cam?
0:42:47 > 0:42:49A helmet mount would make things easier
0:42:49 > 0:42:52A helmet mount would make things easier because I could use two poles
0:42:52 > 0:42:56but it would make uncomfortable viewing back home. For the forward
0:42:56 > 0:43:01facing camera I use this stabiliser which keeps the camera steady. The
0:43:01 > 0:43:11ski tip camera shows how bumpy it is, this uses duct tape because
0:43:11 > 0:43:16otherwise it would come flying off like it did ten years ago. To answer
0:43:16 > 0:43:22Mike's question, I only get one go at it before the race starts. What's
0:43:22 > 0:43:27interesting to me is watching Graham's testosterone and adrenaline
0:43:27 > 0:43:31levels going from normal to beast mode. Thankfully they return to
0:43:31 > 0:43:35normal, whatever that is, when he takes the downhill skis off. There
0:43:35 > 0:43:42will be no need for those skis next week because we are in Schladming.
0:43:42 > 0:43:48In front of 50,000 screaming fans. We will be tasked with following all
0:43:48 > 0:43:59of the action as the chaos unfolds.
0:43:59 > 0:44:01Yep, it's certainly a unique challenge for us all,
0:44:01 > 0:44:03but we wouldn't have it any other way.
0:44:03 > 0:44:08See you then.
0:44:08 > 0:44:14COMMENTATOR: The noise is astonishing!
