:01:13. > :01:18.Good evening and welcome to the Newport Centre for the 22nd Welsh

:01:18. > :01:23.Open final, which has been riveting. You cannot separate Stephen Maguire

:01:23. > :01:33.and Stuart Bingham. They have played each other eight times. At

:01:33. > :01:34.

:01:35. > :01:43.the BetVictor Welsh Open final, it My first event I qualified for, I

:01:43. > :01:48.got to the quarter-finals and then lost out. It is a nice place for me

:01:49. > :01:55.with good memories. I feel as if I have under-achieved in 11 years I

:01:55. > :02:02.have been a professional. It is not good enough, really. I hope to get

:02:02. > :02:06.one and push on after that. I think he has come on this season. I think

:02:06. > :02:11.he has been practising a bit and his game has come good. Stuart

:02:11. > :02:14.Bingham in the last two years improved probably 50%. He could not

:02:14. > :02:20.quite make that break through for whatever reason but it was all

:02:20. > :02:25.about self belief that he never had. Obviously, he won a tournament in

:02:25. > :02:30.Australia and he is a completely different player. Loads of people

:02:30. > :02:36.have won this to start their career so to pick up the world -- Welsh

:02:36. > :02:40.Open trophy would be great. I have had good memories here so we would

:02:40. > :02:47.be great to pick it up. I came down to this tournament just trying to

:02:47. > :02:52.get down to the quarter-finals. To get to the best of nines. Once I

:02:52. > :03:02.got there, I relaxed and I seem to have pushed on after the matches.

:03:02. > :03:07.

:03:08. > :03:12.One more match to go and hopefully And fabulous first four frames of

:03:12. > :03:16.snooker. It is key to get a good start, whether it is best of 17 or

:03:16. > :03:22.nine. Bingham wanted to get a good start. A terrific opening round. He

:03:22. > :03:26.snookered himself on the black. the fourth frame, Stephen Maguire

:03:26. > :03:30.made an excellent double into the centre. A good position on the

:03:30. > :03:37.black. Went on to make the first century of the match it and took a

:03:37. > :03:43.3-1 lead. Later on, Bingham was 4-2 behind. He had to win at least one,

:03:43. > :03:49.two as a bonus. He'd just missed the kiss on the blue, potted the

:03:49. > :03:54.red, got on the black and made it 4-4. In the last frame, Bingham

:03:54. > :04:01.potted a good read, the last on the table. He needed to pinch that

:04:01. > :04:07.frame. He played some really good stuff in the second half of the

:04:07. > :04:16.first session because when you are fighting and you're 4-2 behind,

:04:16. > :04:21.every shot is more difficult. Clearly all to play for.

:04:21. > :04:31.Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome a man in form - from

:04:31. > :04:31.

:04:31. > :05:27.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 56 seconds

:05:27. > :05:37.And now, please welcome the at the MUSIC: "Here I Go Again" by

:05:37. > :06:01.

:06:01. > :06:05.What a superb atmosphere here in the Newport Centre for this final.

:06:05. > :06:12.Ken Stuart Bingham keep up this remarkable run of comebacks at the

:06:12. > :06:15.Welsh Open to add to the title he won in Australia in 2011? Let's

:06:15. > :06:21.find out in the company of our commentators, Darren Morgan and

:06:21. > :06:26.Dominic Dale. Good evening everybody. Welcome to the final

:06:26. > :06:35.session of the final. Superbly poised and I would not like to pick

:06:35. > :06:42.a winner, Darren. You said it, Dominic. I went early on for

:06:42. > :06:50.Stephen Maguire, because of experience. 4-2 up. To be fair to

:06:50. > :07:00.Stuart Bingham, he played terrific towards the end to get out of that

:07:00. > :07:10.session 4-4, so anybody's, really. It is he wants it the most. -- who

:07:10. > :07:29.

:07:29. > :07:32.This frame is probably a bigger frame for Maguire. They are all

:07:32. > :07:39.important but he has lost two on the trot and will want to stop the

:07:40. > :07:49.rot. He will want to stamp his authority on the match. This will

:07:50. > :08:07.

:08:07. > :08:11.be quite nerve-racking for him. The Both players, when they were

:08:11. > :08:14.introduced by our MC, received a standing ovation. I am sure that

:08:14. > :08:24.have lifted their spirits. At fantastic crowd at the Newport

:08:24. > :08:35.

:08:35. > :08:40.Centre for this last session of the If either of the players on nervous,

:08:41. > :08:50.they are not showing it at the moment. Safety at the moment in

:08:51. > :09:24.

:09:24. > :09:34.this first frame of the evening I think he is having a little go at

:09:34. > :09:38.

:09:38. > :09:42.That was such a big risk to take. Like Dominic said, there have been

:09:42. > :09:47.a couple of good safeties. Even if he had made that pot, he was still

:09:47. > :09:57.going to be clattering into the reds. An element of luck attached

:09:57. > :10:08.

:10:08. > :10:18.That was one of those pots he had to get quite close to, if not pot,

:10:18. > :10:25.

:10:25. > :10:30.to get the path of the cue ball That did well. I just wonder if

:10:30. > :10:33.Stephen Maguire will fairly soon try to get position on the black to

:10:33. > :10:43.get it back to the spot or whether he is comfortable enough playing

:10:43. > :11:18.

:11:18. > :11:28.He would love to get the black back onto its own spot. He may play for

:11:28. > :12:04.

:12:04. > :12:09.That was an error. He is having a look to see if he can snick the red

:12:09. > :12:14.into the corner. From where we are, it looks very tight. Too much of a

:12:14. > :12:24.risk. There is one to the right centre but what a risk that would

:12:24. > :12:28.

:12:28. > :12:38.Stuart Bingham will be a little bit relieved that he has missed a long

:12:38. > :12:39.

:12:39. > :13:45.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 56 seconds

:13:45. > :13:53.pot. It has not cost him more than He was trying to contact a thin

:13:53. > :13:59.edge there. He missed it and cannoned another red on the way

:13:59. > :14:04.back. I believe he has been extremely fortunate here. The red

:14:04. > :14:09.is over the yellow pocket but the black is in the way of it. If he

:14:09. > :14:19.can pot the red that is just below the pink in the red corner, it will

:14:19. > :14:19.

:14:19. > :15:27.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 56 seconds

:15:27. > :15:36.be impressive because it is a In an ideal world, where the circle

:15:36. > :15:46.is is where he will be trying to put the cue ball. That is just

:15:46. > :15:51.

:15:51. > :16:01.So, what a chance this is turning into. It is not ideal with no real

:16:01. > :16:07.

:16:07. > :16:10.He can concentrate on the blue. I think the pink will be tied up with

:16:10. > :16:20.the reds. He would still have to get that black down there but for

:16:20. > :16:22.

:16:22. > :16:26.now, just carry on working with the I think the pink will respot. It

:16:26. > :16:30.would be better for Stuart if it did not and it went on to the black

:16:30. > :16:40.spot. The problem is that the way these breads are positioned,

:16:40. > :17:04.

:17:04. > :17:11.getting on the plant will not be We could see him play a clever shot

:17:11. > :17:21.here. He is going to have to play the cannon off the other red. He

:17:21. > :17:29.

:17:29. > :17:39.has noticed a foreign body of some He might leave himself for the pink

:17:39. > :17:55.

:17:55. > :18:02.It wasn't easy, having to play with that much pace and stretching as

:18:02. > :18:12.well. He cued across it slightly. Probably had some sides been on the

:18:12. > :18:30.

:18:30. > :18:40.cue ball cull which deviated the He did not time that well. Slightly

:18:40. > :18:52.

:18:52. > :19:02.hampered cueing but a trace of reds This is what I mean with the

:19:02. > :19:12.

:19:12. > :19:20.butterflies. Both are not settled He will not be happy with himself

:19:20. > :19:27.there. He will be quietly kicking himself. He is still in control. A

:19:27. > :19:37.little roll-up either behind be duller all the brown -- the yellow

:19:37. > :19:52.

:19:52. > :19:57.Well, what do you make of that? It looks like he has gone down and had

:19:57. > :20:04.a wild day at that one with no thought. Do you really think that

:20:04. > :20:14.was a hit and hope shot? If he has got away with this, he is very

:20:14. > :20:15.

:20:15. > :20:19.I don't want to be cruel but what do you deserve after a shot like

:20:19. > :20:26.that? He did not give it any thought at all. You just can't

:20:26. > :20:29.believe it, can you? He had options there. Whether he has come out a

:20:29. > :20:35.little bit frustrated with a couple of the shots that he has played

:20:35. > :20:45.previously, I don't know. But this is only the first frame of this

:20:45. > :20:45.

:20:45. > :21:38.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 56 seconds

:21:38. > :21:44.evening's session. That was an Depending on whether these reds go

:21:44. > :21:52.to the right corner, we might see him playing a little cannon. He has

:21:52. > :22:02.played the cannon. Has he been lucky? I think so. Awkward cueing

:22:02. > :22:08.

:22:08. > :22:12.but I think he would settle for I can't believe that has gone in. I

:22:12. > :22:22.can only put that down to the pace he has hit it at but it looked like

:22:22. > :22:22.

:22:22. > :23:16.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 56 seconds

:23:16. > :23:23.You would have to say this is now He will not need to worry about the

:23:23. > :23:33.two reds that are tight on the top cushion. A colour is all that

:23:33. > :24:01.

:24:01. > :24:05.Often, Stuart Bingham has found himself a couple of frames behind

:24:05. > :24:15.in matches before he gets going. He is the one who has got going first

:24:15. > :24:15.

:24:15. > :25:16.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 56 seconds

:25:16. > :25:26.There has only been one frame in this entire match so far that has

:25:26. > :25:36.

:25:36. > :25:40.not had a 50 break. There was a 41 The it is not there but Stuart

:25:40. > :25:42.Bingham will not mind. An excellent break which is more than enough to

:25:42. > :25:49.secure the first frame of the session. He leads for the first

:25:49. > :25:55.time in the match at 5-4. A great start to the evening's

:25:55. > :25:59.session. Terry Griffiths is with me. That is his 14th break over 50 of

:25:59. > :26:04.the tournament. Both players have been pretty impressive in the first

:26:04. > :26:09.session but Stephen Maguire lost it. He was after a snooker and just

:26:09. > :26:12.smashed them all over the place. He could not find an easy escape.

:26:12. > :26:20.Sometimes they just tip them really hard, hoping some of them will goes

:26:20. > :26:24.safe. But it left him with a chance and he clear the table. This week,

:26:24. > :26:29.Stuart Bingham has been a master of coming back into matches. The

:26:29. > :26:33.question tonight is, if he gets his nose in front, can he stay there?

:26:33. > :26:36.It is difficult if you start defending rather than attacking. It

:26:36. > :26:42.is a natural instinct and it is very difficult to get over that

:26:42. > :26:52.hurdle. But I always tell the players to just play as it goes,

:26:52. > :26:55.

:26:55. > :27:01.forget about the score board. COMMENTATOR: I take on board some

:27:01. > :27:05.of the stuff Terry said then but I don't totally agree with his

:27:05. > :27:15.analogy of Stephen Maguire are not being able to find an out. I don't

:27:15. > :27:16.

:27:16. > :27:19.the key looked. -- I don't think that he looked. Do you think other

:27:19. > :27:23.professional players will be watching this match and seeing this

:27:23. > :27:28.from Stephen Maguire, on many occasions, when he just lashes out

:27:28. > :27:36.and does not look too hard for an escape? You could put a long red

:27:36. > :27:42.against Stephen now thinking he would do just that. I don't know if

:27:42. > :27:47.I would go as far as other players but certainly that last frame - he

:27:47. > :27:57.should have spent a bit of time trying to find an out. To Tristan

:27:57. > :28:01.

:28:01. > :28:11.lot and have a while clash -- trust in having good luck and have a wild

:28:11. > :28:30.

:28:30. > :28:40.I wonder if Stephen may be tempted by the possibility of Dublin this

:28:40. > :28:40.

:28:40. > :28:50.Not quite but it was worth it. He thought he could get on to a ball

:28:50. > :29:04.

:29:04. > :29:14.Here is an option for Stuart Bingham.

:29:14. > :29:16.

:29:16. > :29:26.He has gone the other way. It was a good red. He just tried to slide

:29:26. > :30:04.

:30:04. > :30:14.If he can get through to the potting angle of the red to over

:30:14. > :30:14.

:30:14. > :31:01.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 56 seconds

:31:01. > :31:11.from the black, he can play this as Super at length with the safety

:31:11. > :31:15.

:31:15. > :31:25.I wonder if he has come out with a different tactic tonight. He seems

:31:25. > :31:48.

:31:48. > :31:58.to be playing a bit of a cagey game A little flick on the yellow came

:31:58. > :31:58.

:31:58. > :33:09.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 56 seconds

:33:09. > :33:14.I think that is another of snooker on all the reds. Unless he can just

:33:14. > :33:22.get between the blue and delay to edge the red on the right-hand side

:33:22. > :33:32.of the cluster. But if you can and it took thinly you could make

:33:32. > :33:50.

:33:50. > :34:00.contact with another red on the top I think the middle draw is going to

:34:00. > :34:06.

:34:06. > :34:14.come into play. He may have to Did he played the red audit the try

:34:14. > :34:24.to come off the cushion and play the other one? He played that with

:34:24. > :34:37.

:34:37. > :34:47.swing around side! I think he did The middle pocket is definitely in

:34:47. > :34:51.

:34:51. > :35:01.the way to rest on this red at the Placing the cue ball is obviously

:35:01. > :35:22.

:35:22. > :35:32.pretty important here, placing it As long as the line of the shot is

:35:32. > :35:48.

:35:48. > :35:58.the same, I do not suppose that it It was a risky shot but he played

:35:58. > :35:58.

:35:58. > :37:07.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 56 seconds

:37:07. > :37:17.If he is half ball on the red into the corner he could play a half

:37:17. > :37:27.ball cannon into the one beside it. But he was quite straight. But he's

:37:27. > :37:54.

:37:54. > :37:58.I wonder if Stephen Maguire feels a touch deflated because he must have

:37:58. > :38:08.felt that the way that he played this afternoon was good enough to

:38:08. > :38:12.

:38:12. > :38:17.carry some sort of an advantage Sometimes those thoughts can carry

:38:18. > :38:27.with you for a few hours into the evening session. But here is his

:38:28. > :38:28.

:38:28. > :38:34.He played that with a lot of running side and it pushed the cue

:38:34. > :38:44.ball off line. Stephen Maguire it needs to do something here to lead

:38:44. > :38:44.

:38:44. > :40:19.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 56 seconds

:40:19. > :40:24.his opponent know that he is still He played that very well. It would

:40:24. > :40:34.have looked an easy shot putt the employment are not the easiest to

:40:34. > :40:34.

:40:34. > :42:04.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 56 seconds

:42:04. > :42:14.World, we do believe it? -- well, it would you believe it? He has

:42:14. > :42:14.

:42:14. > :42:20.been lucky there. But there may be a double on for Stuart Bingham. He

:42:20. > :42:30.will be so disappointed that he missed that. He thought he had

:42:30. > :42:38.

:42:38. > :42:48.A little chuckle as well. He is looking the most comfortable of the

:42:48. > :42:48.

:42:48. > :43:36.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 56 seconds

:43:36. > :43:46.What a good shot. It was risky but Stuart is very focused but he looks

:43:46. > :44:07.

:44:07. > :44:12.very, and relaxed at the same time. He is not happy with the way that

:44:12. > :44:22.he played that and the reaction from the cushion. But he is lucky

:44:22. > :44:22.

:44:22. > :45:42.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 56 seconds

:45:42. > :45:48.Stuart Bingham knows that when he missed the red across the cushion,

:45:48. > :45:58.he was in the ascendancy. Stephen Maguire well saved now in this

:45:58. > :46:20.

:46:20. > :46:30.Stephen Maguire like to show his Some of the faces that he Paul's

:46:30. > :46:43.

:46:43. > :46:53.They came in and it was a best-of- nine match. Now it is back to level

:46:53. > :46:54.

:46:54. > :47:04.so it is best of seven. That is what they played when they first

:47:04. > :47:05.

:47:05. > :47:15.came to this tournament here at The pockets are starting to look

:47:15. > :47:35.

:47:35. > :47:45.It is still going to be hard to He has kept the trend going, with a

:47:45. > :48:03.

:48:03. > :48:08.Stuart Bingham had first chance in this frame and missed a relatively

:48:08. > :48:14.easy red but Stephen Maguire and levels up.

:48:14. > :48:18.You cannot separate these two. Are saying at the beginning of the

:48:18. > :48:28.programme these two guys have played each other eight times and

:48:28. > :48:33.it is for my Queen's Speech. And now we are level. We have seen some

:48:33. > :48:41.dodgy plants over the past six days or so. I think Darren thought this

:48:41. > :48:51.was a bit risky. When we reverse the plant, it is not aiming towards

:48:51. > :48:51.

:48:51. > :48:57.the pocket. It is squeezing the red the other way. But Stephen Maguire

:48:57. > :49:05.had already missed one chance and he does get, shall we say, a little

:49:05. > :49:15.excited out there. But when it goes in, it helps. Back to Dominic and

:49:15. > :49:34.

:49:34. > :49:44.Referee Zhu Ying just finishing Some of the audience just waiting

:49:44. > :49:44.

:49:44. > :50:54.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 56 seconds

:50:54. > :51:04.He has to be careful with this next safety shot. That is why he is

:51:04. > :51:15.

:51:15. > :51:25.He has hit it too thick and the red has gone towards the corner pocket.

:51:25. > :51:42.

:51:42. > :51:47.The yellow has not saved him. He He thought he could stop the cue

:51:47. > :51:57.ball for the black, playing it the way that he did, but it went on too

:51:57. > :52:13.

:52:13. > :52:18.far. If he wants to continue this It is difficult sometimes, been you

:52:18. > :52:28.have an opportunity, to refuse a pot when you run out of position. I

:52:28. > :52:28.

:52:28. > :54:10.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 56 seconds

:54:10. > :54:20.think discretion he would be the I do not know if that is a good or

:54:20. > :54:22.

:54:22. > :54:32.bad kiss. The blue will not cope. Brown and cream of blocked. --

:54:32. > :54:32.

:54:32. > :55:56.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 56 seconds

:55:56. > :56:01.He certainly has a lot of his own - If he has a little angle on the

:56:01. > :56:11.yellow he can pot and stand it up, but I still think the green is

:56:11. > :56:11.

:56:11. > :56:57.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 56 seconds

:56:57. > :57:07.He has put the easy miss on the red You get a good perspective of the

:57:07. > :57:43.

:57:43. > :57:47.Not something that you can homes He had an opportunity to disturb

:57:47. > :57:57.the cluster then but with three reds out in the open he did not

:57:57. > :58:02.

:58:02. > :58:11.He is on the brown and he could play into the cluster again,

:58:11. > :58:16.straight on to the pink. But he has got two reds out in the open.

:58:16. > :58:22.not like it because the way that the red below the pink's our

:58:22. > :58:32.position, he is likely to clients off them and the cue ball could go

:58:32. > :58:32.

:58:32. > :59:33.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 56 seconds

:59:33. > :59:43.Now he will play the shot with a full ball contact on to the pink.

:59:43. > :59:43.

:59:43. > :01:19.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 56 seconds

:01:19. > :01:29.This is frame ball. Stephen Maguire is not happy. He is

:01:29. > :01:37.

:01:37. > :01:39.I am pretty certain that Stephen Maguire will not have the

:01:39. > :01:49.opportunity to play for a snooker because he will need to many

:04:04. > :04:13.Great stuff from Stuart Bingham. He takes the lead in this match at 6

:04:13. > :04:20.We are going to have a look at a shot during the course of this

:04:20. > :04:26.frame but Stephen Maguire played. He played a very good safety shot

:04:26. > :04:35.here but he was just a few inches short of having Stuart Bingham in a

:04:35. > :04:40.couple -- a lot of trouble. played a virtually to perfection

:04:40. > :04:44.but when the one red came over, it was difficult to move that into a

:04:44. > :04:53.pottable position. If it had, that would have put Stuart Bingham in

:04:53. > :04:56.all kinds of trouble. But he got his 118. It's was a very good black

:04:56. > :05:00.that Stuart potted from that red. He did not know where the cue ball

:05:00. > :05:07.would go. It cannoned into a loose red and run forward about a foot.

:05:07. > :05:17.The only pottable colour he had was very tricky. He potted it without

:05:17. > :05:18.

:05:18. > :05:25.He expected the black to cover the pocket for the reds. There was a

:05:25. > :05:33.lot of pressure on that. So what do you think is going to happen now?

:05:33. > :05:37.It is a good question. 4 Stephen Maguire, you do feel that whatever

:05:37. > :05:44.happens, he needs to win this frame to try to go into the mid-session

:05:44. > :05:52.interval of this evening's session still square. If he goes to behind

:05:52. > :05:55.with all to play, -- it goes two behind with four to play, it is

:05:55. > :06:02.going to be difficult for him. Stuart Bingham looks by far the

:06:02. > :06:06.most comfortable out there. That is absolutely how I see it. There

:06:06. > :06:16.seems to be a world of difference between these two. Stuart looks

:06:16. > :06:37.

:06:37. > :06:47.very comfortable and ready to win He can go for this red to the left

:06:47. > :06:47.

:06:47. > :07:27.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 56 seconds

:07:27. > :07:31.If he can play one more good pot, Something Stephen Maguire has said

:07:31. > :07:34.in a couple of interviews this week - he wants to win this trophy very

:07:34. > :07:44.badly because he has lost in the last five finals that he has been

:07:44. > :07:47.

:07:47. > :07:54.in and that must be weighing on his Of course, when a top player goes

:07:54. > :08:01.through a bit of a bad spell, the press can sometimes get on the back,

:08:01. > :08:11.I suppose, for want of a better way of putting it. I think Stephen has

:08:11. > :08:15.

:08:15. > :08:25.mentioned that he does not like that, although all he needs to do

:08:25. > :08:29.He played that very well. He would have expected more reds to command

:08:30. > :08:39.of the pack there. It was quite unbelievable that only one

:08:40. > :08:47.

:08:47. > :08:51.In his press interview, he just needs to make them leave him alone.

:08:51. > :09:01.There would not be many press people there to interview him if he

:09:01. > :09:04.

:09:04. > :09:14.It is the first to nine frames this evening who will lift the trophy.

:09:14. > :09:18.

:09:18. > :09:23.It would be good for Stuart if a green went. If it does not, I don't

:09:23. > :09:25.know how on earth he can get on a red from the yellow. Nothing

:09:25. > :09:35.available in the cluster except that one loose red to the left of

:09:35. > :10:09.

:10:09. > :10:15.A clever shot there. He used the brown. He put a bit of right hand

:10:15. > :10:25.side onto the cue ball. Very well played. Very clever. He is going to

:10:25. > :10:36.

:10:36. > :10:41.have to pull off a good pot, though, That was a tremendous shot from

:10:41. > :10:46.Stuart Bingham. I wasn't sure whether he would run through to

:10:46. > :10:52.give himself a better opportunity to pot the ball. What an angle he

:10:52. > :11:02.has got here on the blue to go into the cluster. Just checking the

:11:02. > :11:12.

:11:12. > :11:19.potting angle was, he needs to use Stephen Maguire would have been in

:11:19. > :11:25.his chair willing him to miss it. He has got what he asked for. He

:11:25. > :11:32.must make this chance count. Stuart Bingham has been behind the right

:11:32. > :11:37.the way through in this match. He missed a relatively easy red across

:11:38. > :11:46.the cushion. Maguire won the frame. He has gone one frame ahead. It

:11:46. > :11:50.his lead. That blue was far from easy. If it had gone in, from this

:11:50. > :12:00.position you would have expected him to have extended the lead. What

:12:00. > :12:38.

:12:39. > :12:42.a lifeline he has thrown Stuart Well, would you believe it?!

:12:42. > :12:52.Stephen knows he should not really have missed that. Sometimes you

:12:52. > :13:04.

:13:04. > :13:09.just focus so much on not hitting I think Maguire was fortunate that

:13:09. > :13:12.that black was tight enough for the red. If it had come out it would

:13:12. > :13:18.have left him a nice easy red to the right corner and then it would

:13:18. > :13:27.all have been on. As it is, he is on this pink but he is going to be

:13:27. > :13:37.left a bit of distance from the cue The other colours are down the

:13:37. > :13:39.

:13:39. > :13:49.other end of the table so this is It was a poor shot played by

:13:49. > :13:52.

:13:52. > :13:56.I just think he has not caught the right potting angle. He could have

:13:56. > :14:02.caught the near jaw, which would have missed, so he hedged his bets

:14:02. > :14:12.but that was not a very positive and confident shot. As you can see,

:14:12. > :14:19.he is completely and utterly He seems to have put himself under

:14:20. > :14:28.so much pressure. Such a difference in the demeanour of these two.

:14:28. > :14:38.Stuart looks confident and ebullient, and Steve McQuire looks

:14:38. > :14:38.

:14:38. > :16:37.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 56 seconds

:16:37. > :16:43.like he is frightened to death. -- In it goes. The pink was an

:16:43. > :16:53.important shot in this match. He needs to try to get onto the pink,

:16:53. > :17:18.

:17:18. > :17:22.That is the problem when you stretch. You force things in. A

:17:22. > :17:32.couple in the audience were shouting out a bit of encouragement

:17:32. > :17:43.

:17:43. > :17:46.If Stephen Maguire what a pot four reds and four colours -- worked to

:17:46. > :17:56.pot four reds and four colours, it would be a problem for Stuart

:17:56. > :18:21.

:18:21. > :18:25.Stephen Maguire smiled but at the moment, he is a horrible place.

:18:25. > :18:31.Everything was looking so good at the start of this match - positive,

:18:31. > :18:41.a couple of centuries, 4-2 up - but ever since, you would have to say

:18:41. > :18:42.

:18:42. > :18:50.it has been totally one-sided. He is trying to hold on and it is

:18:50. > :18:54.hurting him. Even though they say it doesn't have an effective, he

:18:54. > :19:02.has not won any of the last five or six finals see have been in since

:19:02. > :19:12.2008. It is bound to have an effect. -- he has been in. You want to get

:19:12. > :19:23.

:19:23. > :19:29.This interval, I think, is just about to the right time. It is just

:19:29. > :19:33.pressure for Stephen Maguire. The next 15 minutes will do him good.

:19:33. > :19:43.He might even go up and have and knock on the practice table to try

:19:43. > :19:58.

:19:58. > :20:06.Every one is pottable now for Stuart. It has been a good

:20:06. > :20:10.performance this morning. -- evening. I fancied him just rolling

:20:10. > :20:20.the green then because he has not got play this shot on the red. We

:20:20. > :20:27.might even see him just knock the black in and play a street plant. -

:20:27. > :20:30.- is straight plant. Stephen has a lot to think about in the next few

:20:30. > :20:38.minutes. Stuart Bingham will be more than happy with his evening's

:20:38. > :20:43.work and extends his lead 2 7-5. You have to have a lot of sympathy

:20:43. > :20:46.for Stephen but everything is going right for Stuart Bingham. I will

:20:46. > :20:50.explain why we have swapped the lovely, cosy studio for a gym. I

:20:50. > :20:54.have not been in the gym for a few weeks and I think it is starting to

:20:54. > :21:00.show that I have had to drag Terry away from the bench pressing Casey

:21:00. > :21:05.embarrasses me. He can lift about 150! I will tell you why we are

:21:05. > :21:08.here in a moment. Nothing is going right for Stephen. No, nothing is

:21:08. > :21:12.going right but Stuart Bingham has played very well and Stephen has

:21:12. > :21:17.not really stayed with him. It is the first time in the match

:21:17. > :21:21.somebody has made a move. He has won five of the last six frames and

:21:21. > :21:24.that is a big move. From his opponent's perspective, he has not

:21:24. > :21:29.scored a lot and is not having many chances and has just watching the

:21:29. > :21:33.title slipping away from him. the fact that Stephen has been in

:21:33. > :21:39.this position before and lost the Welsh Open to John Higgins in 2011,

:21:39. > :21:43.does that trouble you? He had a lead in that as well and lost it so

:21:43. > :21:48.it will be starting to trouble him now, thinking that he has given him

:21:48. > :21:52.the game. You don't really notice the other player is playing really

:21:52. > :21:55.well at that moment. It is more like what they could have done

:21:55. > :22:01.because they are all perfectionists when they should strive a little

:22:01. > :22:04.bit more for excellence - it is a bit easier. All footballers and

:22:04. > :22:07.rugby players I know, who I see every week, spend a lot of time

:22:07. > :22:11.here in the gym but I have been wondering how much time snooker

:22:11. > :22:18.players spend working out. So Dominic Dale swapped his fancy bow-

:22:18. > :22:23.tie for some Lycra and headed to a sweaty gym.

:22:23. > :22:26.As a snooker player, I spent my life bend every snooker table in a

:22:26. > :22:36.dimly-lit room - not an environment suitable for helping living. But

:22:36. > :22:49.

:22:49. > :22:52.periodically, snooker players still I don't know if you're asking me if

:22:53. > :22:57.I am fit but I am not the fittest. A run not many players that really

:22:57. > :23:02.take it seriously. Ronnie was the first person that implemented it

:23:02. > :23:08.and I am just looking to follow on. It did not do him any harm so any

:23:08. > :23:11.advantage you can get, even if it is just 1%, is going to help.

:23:11. > :23:15.the new world number one thinks it gives him an advantage, maybe there

:23:15. > :23:20.is something to it. I ventured into the gym here at the Newport Centre

:23:20. > :23:23.to see if getting fit would help with my snooker. Strength

:23:23. > :23:30.conditioning is a major thing in any sport, at the top elite sports,

:23:30. > :23:37.so even with snooker people can progress by having that little bit

:23:37. > :23:40.more than somebody else. It will the real heart rate, which is good

:23:40. > :23:45.because of your heart rate is lower, you will have better concentration.

:23:46. > :23:50.But what we won today is to engage our core a bit more and hold in

:23:50. > :23:55.some contractions. The first exercise is a squat. We are going

:23:55. > :23:57.to replicate what we do at the snooker table. So when you are in

:23:58. > :24:02.that position, your hands are going to be high, as if you are taking a

:24:02. > :24:07.shot, and you are going to work both shoulders. Get into score

:24:07. > :24:10.position. Legs shoulder with the apart, hips fightback and we are

:24:10. > :24:15.going to sit into it and keep our hands high. Come a bit deeper and

:24:15. > :24:21.we are going to hold that for a minute. Much of the stuff I do with

:24:21. > :24:27.the guys is about posture so even squat techniques, your hands are

:24:27. > :24:32.high so your lower back is engaged. Banks are really good for keeping

:24:32. > :24:37.core stability but with your contractions, you're holding that

:24:37. > :24:42.position so for a snooker player to beat doing a squat for about 10

:24:42. > :24:45.seconds or 20 seconds, you can bring that to the training side and

:24:45. > :24:53.to 30 or 40 seconds in that position, so you of replicating the

:24:53. > :24:59.position at the table. How can you feel that? Hamstrings, call, lower

:24:59. > :25:06.back? Everywhere. It is relaxed muscle. We don't want to feel heavy

:25:06. > :25:10.legs and heavy arms. As you saw, you are only doing 10 seconds on

:25:10. > :25:20.the table but I am training you for longer so for your flexibility, we

:25:20. > :25:25.should do the same. Lie down on your back and get your leg up. What

:25:25. > :25:29.is the lead that you stand on? What we are going to do is get you to

:25:29. > :25:34.your normal flexibility so star footing -- pushing against me and

:25:35. > :25:38.you are going to push for 15 seconds. Keep going. A snooker

:25:38. > :25:43.player needs good flexibility but I don't want to build muscle mass

:25:43. > :25:46.because that was short and every inch of motion. So then on the

:25:46. > :25:50.table there cue stroke might be off. There long-range potting might be

:25:50. > :25:56.different. Also when they are on the table, if there is too much

:25:56. > :26:03.muscle mass, you get muscle fatigue so what I would be advising snooker

:26:03. > :26:12.players to do is go into a more meditative state, like isometric

:26:12. > :26:15.So my physical well-being can help better my game. Sport Wales works

:26:15. > :26:21.with our elite athletes, providing them with analysis and data that

:26:21. > :26:25.helps them build their performances. Tradition Lee, physiology would be

:26:25. > :26:29.more involved with traditional marathon running, endurance cycling,

:26:29. > :26:33.but actually come up with our Commonwealth sports team, we work

:26:34. > :26:38.with shooting and balls so it is a different end of physiology and we

:26:38. > :26:41.approach that differently in terms of it being about healthy living,

:26:41. > :26:45.being confident about yourself, because everyone knows that if you

:26:45. > :26:48.do a bit of exercise, you get your happy hormones flowing and you feel

:26:49. > :26:52.good about yourself because you are looking after yourself and you are

:26:52. > :26:56.in a better position. In terms of snooker, it would be about

:26:56. > :27:01.maintaining and increasing confidence levels. If you are fit

:27:01. > :27:06.and active, you reduce the risk of diseases and you get a feel-good

:27:06. > :27:09.factor. Concentration is fundamental in our sport and apart

:27:09. > :27:14.from the extensive hours of practice, there is one key

:27:14. > :27:18.ingredient I have obviously been missing. You are about 50% water so

:27:18. > :27:21.when you are dehydrated, you have lost some of that. When water is in

:27:21. > :27:25.our bloodstream, every time our heartbeats it is pushing it round

:27:25. > :27:29.the body so that is the blood volume. If you are dehydrated, your

:27:29. > :27:33.blood volume decreases, said to pump the same event around your

:27:33. > :27:37.body has to work faster. If you are dehydrated in snooker, your heart

:27:38. > :27:42.rate is going to be elevated so it will be pumping a lot more to just

:27:42. > :27:45.deal with providing oxygen to the muscles. That might make you feel

:27:45. > :27:51.nervous and you will think about all sorts of things and it is

:27:51. > :27:55.actually taking your mind off the game. Drinking water I can handle

:27:55. > :27:59.but I'm not so sure about this physical education. What it has

:27:59. > :28:07.proven, though, is that if I want to move back up in the rankings,

:28:07. > :28:10.every little helps. Suck it up, Dominic! One minute, hold it. Hold

:28:10. > :28:20.it there. This is where you need to concentrate, think about the

:28:20. > :28:30.snooker shot and think about where it you or breathing. 10, 9, 8, 7, 6,

:28:30. > :28:31.

:28:31. > :28:34.5, 4, 3, two, one. Good, Dominic! If I was coaching Dominic and I put

:28:34. > :28:39.him in that position, instead of that man giving him a minute, I

:28:39. > :28:43.would say that I would be back in an hour! Backing your day, did you

:28:43. > :28:48.players keep fit? EU and Cliff Thorburn - did you have a bench

:28:48. > :28:55.press competition? No, the June would be closed by the time we

:28:55. > :29:00.finished. -- the gymnasium. If you think about how many frames Stuart

:29:00. > :29:04.Bingham and Steve Maguire have played, it is 84! Fit this would

:29:04. > :29:10.help them a bit. How much, I don't know. But in my day, there were not

:29:10. > :29:15.many gyms about and it was not the way to go but today it is much more

:29:15. > :29:19.readily acceptable to young and old. There must be something in it

:29:19. > :29:23.because as Judd Trump said, even if it is 1%, it can give you the edge

:29:23. > :29:28.to win the game. You work with so many players and give advice on the

:29:28. > :29:32.mental aspect of the game to so many professional players. Do they

:29:32. > :29:41.say, "I am having a morning in the gym and I will meet you in the

:29:41. > :29:45.afternoon"? They may have said it but I didn't hear it. I am no

:29:45. > :29:50.expert in the gym and I could not give them the advice. They would

:29:50. > :29:55.need to go and see the experts to advise them what is needed in that

:29:55. > :30:00.particular sport. So, what is going through Stephen Maguire's mind

:30:00. > :30:05.right now? What is it like being in the final of a major event and

:30:05. > :30:15.possibly being down and out? One man who knows his this fellow who

:30:15. > :30:28.

:30:28. > :30:34.I turned professional in 1978. I wanted to find out if I could

:30:34. > :30:39.the world. I set myself a target of three years and if I failed I would

:30:39. > :30:48.go back to work. Little did I know what I was going to experience in

:30:48. > :30:54.my first season. I led Rex Stevens 8-2, first to nine, in the first

:30:54. > :30:59.round of the championship. I somehow managed to lose 9-8. When I

:30:59. > :31:05.shook his hand I could not feel anything. I wanted to say well done

:31:05. > :31:10.but nothing came out. There was an emptiness inside me that had

:31:10. > :31:15.deadened by mind. It was a horrible defeat, overwhelming for me because

:31:15. > :31:20.of its potential impact. Her career I had looked forward to was in

:31:20. > :31:25.jeopardy but also because of the stupid, self-inflicted, almost

:31:25. > :31:35.suicidal way in which I lost. First comes the sadness and you start

:31:35. > :31:40.become a stranger to yourself. You being in the company of many. Your

:31:40. > :31:45.eyes up to to the world. It takes strength to shift your attention

:31:45. > :31:49.off the plane when you feel your soul has been stripped bare. I

:31:49. > :31:55.stood alone in a cocoon of grief, emotionally cut it, wondering if I

:28:22. > :28:26.pressure has transferred to Stuart Bingham. He looked like he was

:28:26. > :28:32.going to take the last two frames and ended up losing them. Let's

:28:32. > :28:42.look at one of the key moments from that frame. This is Steve Maguire's

:28:46. > :28:50.Stuart miss the long red which, earlier in the match, he has been

:28:57. > :29:01.crucial frame when both players were making mistakes and there was

:29:01. > :29:07.a bit of cat-and-mouse. He was right because suddenly, the impetus

:29:19. > :29:26.Maguire has struggled. Now all of a sudden it is seven all and it is

:29:26. > :29:28.the toss of a coin. What is is missing the pot that he was

:29:28. > :29:35.potting at the end of the first session and at the start of this

:29:35. > :29:38.session. That is what makes it so intriguing. He has sat in his chair

:29:38. > :29:43.now and the demons will now be possessing his head a bit. He knows

:29:43. > :29:46.he has had a chance to run out the winner and now he is going to have

:14:44. > :14:51.I thought it was far enough from the cushion not to do that. This is

:20:17. > :20:24.momentum after that clearance under pressure and has done it twice

:20:24. > :20:28.already this week. Should Stuart go on to win this, it will stand him

:20:28. > :20:35.in good stead for future tournaments, having done what he

:51:08. > :51:12.but these two fellows have been magnificent. It has been a

:51:12. > :51:17.fantastic week for both players. But final was second to none. One

:51:17. > :51:23.of the Best finals there have had for a very long time. Both players

:51:23. > :51:31.played their part and it could have gone either way. Reading the

:51:31. > :51:37.newspapers this morning, Stephen Bull's same, I am getting sick and

:51:37. > :51:41.tired of people reminding me that my last major was in 2008. He said

:52:03. > :52:08.finals. He has won it now, it has gone, he is a tournament winner

:52:08. > :52:13.again. These are beautiful pictures of Mackay who has worked extremely

:52:13. > :52:18.hard this week. Stephen Hendry earlier in the week described him

:52:18. > :52:23.as an animal when he is playing. No better illustration of that than

:52:23. > :52:31.when he realised perhaps that he had won the Welsh Open and he bangs

:52:31. > :52:38.the table. Just take a look at this. This is what it means to him.

:52:38. > :52:47.might pay for it in the morning. What is he like around the table?

:52:47. > :52:52.He is a real nice fellow. He had a spell of five frames where his

:52:52. > :52:55.break-building was prolific and he started today with two centuries in

:52:55. > :52:59.the first six frames. Stuart Bingham will be really disappointed

:52:59. > :53:04.that he led the match get away after putting himself in a winning

:53:04. > :53:09.position. But Stephen Maguire took his chance at the end. What a week

:53:09. > :53:13.we have had here in Newport at the Welsh Open. The next snooker here

:53:19. > :53:26.the Crucible in Sheffield for the World Championships. It starts on

:53:26. > :53:30.April 20th. This week has been pretty amazing, really, with some

:53:38. > :53:44.contenders to lift the crown at the Crucible, he would they include?

:53:44. > :53:49.Ding Junhui, Neil Robertson, Mark Selby, John Higgins and Ronnie

:54:00. > :54:01.

:54:01. > :54:06.cannot rule him out on this form. But he would not be in my three or
