:00:32. > :00:38.Yes, welcome back to Friday night at the Welsh Open, and the quest for a

:00:39. > :00:42.place in the semifinals. If you were with us earlier you will have seen

:00:43. > :00:48.Stuart Bingham take a 1-0 lead against the man ranked at number 55,

:00:49. > :00:55.Stuart Carrington. Then on, Stuart Bingham was cruising, into a 4-0

:00:56. > :01:00.lead and one frame from victory. Carrington pulled two frames back

:01:01. > :01:01.and we join it with Stuart Bingham 4-2-macro up. Your commentators are

:01:02. > :01:13.Darren Morgan and Rob Walker. Well, it looked for all the world at

:01:14. > :01:20.the interval as though when they resumed, with Stuart Bingham four

:01:21. > :01:25.frames up, Stuart Carrington's spell in the quarterfinals at the Welsh

:01:26. > :01:33.Open was going to be very brief. But he got one on the board with breaks

:01:34. > :01:36.of 38 and 45 to go 4-1. And then a Mr black from Stuart Bingham when it

:01:37. > :01:44.looked as though he was going to get over the line allowed the

:01:45. > :01:50.26-year-old from Grimsby to get back in and halve the deficit for- two, a

:01:51. > :01:55.really spirited response to a desperate situation for Carrington.

:01:56. > :02:07.But at the start of this frame, Stuart Carrington was bold and went

:02:08. > :02:12.for a big opening read -- red. So once again, a little momentum shift

:02:13. > :02:19.here. Just as Stuart Bingham was beginning to get a bit shifty in his

:02:20. > :02:22.seat, he is now at the table again, and he will be absolutely desperate

:02:23. > :02:26.not to allow this match to last any longer than it needs to, especially

:02:27. > :02:31.knowing, Darren Morgan, that he could have had this wrapped up but

:02:32. > :02:35.for missing the black in the previous frame. Absolutely. And even

:02:36. > :02:43.though he was on that red into the middle pocket and it went OK, you

:02:44. > :02:48.just can't believe that. All of the hard work was done and it was all

:02:49. > :02:52.over. He did not miss hit it, he just missed it by a long way. So

:02:53. > :02:56.second time lucky with this last shot. He tried to play this the

:02:57. > :03:00.previous time, going for the two reds and he missed it. He was lucky

:03:01. > :03:04.to leave one into the centre. You would have to say, if this was

:03:05. > :03:08.before the interval, this would have been end of the match. The way he

:03:09. > :03:14.played the first three and a half frames, anyway, certainly.

:03:15. > :03:26.Obviously, it has gone a little bit edgy for him. Stuart Carrington,

:03:27. > :03:30.pulling two frames back. He is leaving himself on the black half

:03:31. > :03:34.ball to go into the cluster of reds. With the red to the left of the

:03:35. > :03:43.black, that is going into the cluster, dragging the cue ball back

:03:44. > :03:47.a futures. -- a few inches. That was similar to the one that he missed

:03:48. > :03:55.but this time, no problems. If he is on the red... He wanted to get into

:03:56. > :04:05.the red is a bit fatter than that, disturb them a bit is tight.

:04:06. > :04:10.If it is that tight, he can pot it with the right-hand side, just

:04:11. > :04:19.turning the ball over a little bit. Well, that was fortunate, to find

:04:20. > :04:57.the plant. He picked that one out. Stuart Bingham, the world number

:04:58. > :05:06.two. He made the semifinals here at the Welsh when we were over at the

:05:07. > :05:10.Newport Centre in 2013. He may have thought, during the mid-session

:05:11. > :05:13.interval, that he was one frame away from a whitewash. All credit to

:05:14. > :05:16.Stuart Carrington for forcing his way back into the match from such a

:05:17. > :05:29.truly desperate situation. But Stuart Bingham will want to

:05:30. > :05:34.close this door before the belief grows any further in his opponent.

:05:35. > :05:40.And another error! The black in the preceding frame, and the 2015 world

:05:41. > :05:45.champion is having a little bit of a wobble here. And every time he does

:05:46. > :05:56.so, Stuart Carrington 's resolve grows. What a match this is turning

:05:57. > :06:01.out to be. Yes, when he picked out the plant, I thought it was all over

:06:02. > :06:05.again. It just shows you the difference with getting on the right

:06:06. > :06:09.or the wrong side of the blue. He was dead straight on it. If he had

:06:10. > :06:16.had a slight angle he could have stunned down to the reds and it

:06:17. > :06:19.would have been unmissable. Obviously it was awkward playing

:06:20. > :06:24.with the rest and he had to play it with pace to stun through. Stuart

:06:25. > :06:26.Carrington will be quite happy, but he has the same problem. He is using

:06:27. > :06:38.the rest. It was an easy pot but the

:06:39. > :06:45.positional side was harder. He forced it around the ankles, and he

:06:46. > :06:49.needed the cue ball to slow down. I can't understand why he played

:06:50. > :06:52.around it instead of off one cushion and up and down.

:06:53. > :07:12.REFEREE: Touching ball. A reprieve. Food for thought for Stuart Bingham.

:07:13. > :07:19.He must have been as certain as you can be that he had -- that he would

:07:20. > :07:19.already be having a bite to eat, after his post-match press

:07:20. > :07:35.conference. The touching ball enabling Stuart

:07:36. > :07:46.Carrington to avoid a difficult shot. And at what stage, Darren,

:07:47. > :07:49.despite the fact that he still leads 4-2, at what stage will Stuart

:07:50. > :07:55.Bingham start to get a little bit edgy? Well, I think it's fair to say

:07:56. > :08:03.that that stage has already come and gone, and the black he missed in the

:08:04. > :08:11.frame before, he could play it 100 times and never miss it.

:08:12. > :08:18.After he picked out that plant, he missed another red that he would

:08:19. > :08:22.probably pot eight out of. And again, he has played a really poor

:08:23. > :08:28.shot there. He played it as a shock to nothing and he hit it way too

:08:29. > :08:36.thick, so this is a wobble. The thing is, if Stuart Carrington can

:08:37. > :08:40.win this frame, he played that plant as a shock to nothing, but hit it a

:08:41. > :08:47.bit thick. But this is starting to get a bit worrying for Stuart

:08:48. > :08:52.Bingham. But obviously, Stuart Carrington has got to take these

:08:53. > :08:56.chances. These balls are absolutely perfect. OK, he is a long way behind

:08:57. > :09:15.in the frame. At 4-3, it is anybody's match. Which

:09:16. > :09:23.is absolutely amazing, when you think that Stuart Carrington had

:09:24. > :09:30.only three points to his name across the first four frames of the match.

:09:31. > :09:38.We have had some big comebacks this week. Mark Davis, coming from way

:09:39. > :09:42.behind to beat Ronnie O'Sullivan, who was here as defending champion,

:09:43. > :09:47.having won a fourth Welsh Open crown 12 months ago. But this really would

:09:48. > :09:54.be the best of the week so far. A little tester now. Into the left

:09:55. > :10:47.centre. Straight into the heart of the

:10:48. > :10:50.pocket. And he has settled right down now, Stuart Carrington. He was

:10:51. > :10:58.a completely different player before the into. Stuart Bingham, at the

:10:59. > :11:06.moment, has been helping his cause slightly. He has to sit in his

:11:07. > :11:07.chair. This will be painful for him, because he knows he should have won

:11:08. > :11:41.by now. You just never know, in this great

:11:42. > :11:55.sport. Where and when will the great

:11:56. > :12:17.comebacks start? Well, it is much better on the pot

:12:18. > :12:20.success. Earlier in the match was up 33%, because Stuart Carrington had

:12:21. > :12:25.only had three opportunities to pot a red.

:12:26. > :12:35.At one stage, the points deficit was over 370, I think. That's a bit more

:12:36. > :12:52.like it, if you are in the Stuart Carrington fan club.

:12:53. > :13:03.Well, that one has gone wrong. He has struggled a little bit all might

:13:04. > :13:08.with the pace of this table. He has just lost the cue ball. He has

:13:09. > :13:11.played all of his matches on the outside tables. This table is

:13:12. > :13:18.playing much faster than them. And I am sure if that shot had been on the

:13:19. > :13:28.outside table, he would have been on these reds perfect. He is still on

:13:29. > :13:35.the red. But it is a lot thinner than he would have liked. Now, is he

:13:36. > :13:39.going to play it in a confident manner? I think he can get to the

:13:40. > :13:44.potting angle. He is just making sure it will pass the other one to

:13:45. > :13:50.the corner pocket. If he is feeling really confident and good, he will

:13:51. > :13:51.not play this with pace. He will be playing for blue, or one of the

:13:52. > :14:06.baulk colours. Well, it just clipped the red. So he

:14:07. > :14:13.did play positively and with confidence but the red clipped the

:14:14. > :14:17.other one, so it would not go. You just see the other red move, so it

:14:18. > :14:28.changed the path of the red he played. Well, Stuart. He really

:14:29. > :14:33.cooked that one. He played for the black but he landed on the pink.

:14:34. > :14:37.Still a little bit nervy. He will be desperate to get over the line. And

:14:38. > :14:58.to set up his semifinal place. It is all going to be now, red to

:14:59. > :15:08.colour, colour to that last red against the cushion. He is going to

:15:09. > :15:13.be a little further from this red then he would have liked, off this

:15:14. > :15:46.black. He overscrewed by about four inches.

:15:47. > :15:55.Taking his time over this one. He knows how important this is.

:15:56. > :16:03.And maybe that indicates the change in mindset from Stuart Bingham.

:16:04. > :16:08.Pre-interval, he would have gone for that with no hesitation at all. But

:16:09. > :16:14.now, he is aware he is in a match. Don't get me wrong, this could work

:16:15. > :16:21.out to his favour, but Stuart Bingham, world number two, for him,

:16:22. > :16:27.that was a really strange shot. He could now come off the cushion, hit

:16:28. > :16:31.the red, go safe. Stuart Bingham will not get another chance in this

:16:32. > :16:36.frame. That was his chance to win frame and match. That was a real

:16:37. > :16:38.strange decision. But it could land up being the right decision. We will

:16:39. > :16:55.soon find out. I have to say, especially now the

:16:56. > :17:21.blue has come towards seven, he may have made the wrong choice.

:17:22. > :17:33.Uncomfortable moments the Stuart Bingham. Quit on that shot, and you

:17:34. > :17:37.would even have to say now that, even though Stuart Carrington is ten

:17:38. > :17:44.points behind in this frame... He is in control.

:17:45. > :17:51.I was going to say, as long as he plays a good safety, and he has.

:17:52. > :17:56.That is very good. Just cannot believe that Stuart

:17:57. > :18:08.Bingham refused that black. From a position of absolute strength

:18:09. > :18:14.in this match, the world number two has displayed just a couple of

:18:15. > :18:20.frailties there. And what a chance this is.

:18:21. > :18:29.4-0. Should be about to become 4-3. And who would have thought that at

:18:30. > :18:45.the mid-session interval? Amazing. Well, you were right, Darren.

:18:46. > :18:53.Assuming there is no issue with this clearance from Carrington, that lack

:18:54. > :18:59.of conviction from Stuart over that black has allowed Stuart Carrington

:19:00. > :19:06.an opportunity. And the longer this match goes, the

:19:07. > :19:12.more frustrated the 2015 world champion will become.

:19:13. > :19:19.It looked for all the world that the interval as if he would already be

:19:20. > :19:24.having a meal after his press conference now, and suddenly, Stuart

:19:25. > :19:29.Bingham has been dragged into a real battle here. A battle for tomorrow's

:19:30. > :19:47.semifinals. O! But will he have one more chance

:19:48. > :19:51.to secure a 5-2 win? And a wry smile there. It was a fantastic

:19:52. > :20:02.opportunity. But only if he closed it out.

:20:03. > :21:01.What a let off therefore Stuart Bingham. -- and let off

:21:02. > :21:05.he will be relieved he is still in the Spain.

:21:06. > :21:11.Stuart Carrington has got himself back into this match. If he loses

:21:12. > :21:58.this frame and the match, he will be hurting for a little while.

:21:59. > :22:09.How many more twists of drama does this frame and this match hold?

:22:10. > :22:15.Well, he needs that cue ball to run, and has it come? It has, it has

:22:16. > :22:19.sniggered. Well, well, well. Just about to say, here's looking at me,

:22:20. > :22:23.he is looking up at the guards, he has had a massive result. Because at

:22:24. > :22:32.the moment, Stuart is completely gone. He is in panic mode out there.

:22:33. > :22:39.He is just desperate to get over the line any which way he can. Real

:22:40. > :22:40.unfortunate, this, for Stuart Carrington, to be faced with a

:22:41. > :22:49.snooker. He has left the green.

:22:50. > :23:20.It is not easy. Just asking for that cue ball to be

:23:21. > :23:28.cleaned by Ben Williams. It has all got a little bit nervy.

:23:29. > :23:32.Can he take this chance? This chance to finish the match, that he would

:23:33. > :23:44.have thought would have been over at least half an hour ago.

:23:45. > :23:54.Seven. So, he is almost there.

:23:55. > :24:06.Just the blue, to be certain. The blue that came to his rescue.

:24:07. > :24:11.Denied Stuart Carrington what would have been an easy green and this

:24:12. > :24:19.frame. And it is not there! The world number two has become so

:24:20. > :24:22.nervous, and how the tables have turned in this match. In confidence

:24:23. > :24:36.and composure. Yes, and he played the more

:24:37. > :24:40.difficult shot. The shot he could play all day long, chipping the blue

:24:41. > :24:41.back into the middle pocket. He is just not thinking straight at the

:24:42. > :24:50.moment as well. Well, that is OK, that safety shot.

:24:51. > :24:54.I can't believe that Stuart Carrington did not have a go at

:24:55. > :25:00.that. He goes for the blue and pops the blue, gets on the pink. It would

:25:01. > :25:26.have hurt Stuart Bingham so much more.

:25:27. > :25:31.I'm not even sure many people in the crowd for the match would still be

:25:32. > :25:38.going at this time. Two hours, 22 minutes on the board. A real treat

:25:39. > :25:57.for the neutrals here. Stuart is going to need that black

:25:58. > :26:06.and could play a clever little shot here. A blue half ball. More for

:26:07. > :26:10.that black across the corner pocket. He might try and decide to play the

:26:11. > :26:14.blue up and down the spots, tried to put the cue ball in behind the

:26:15. > :26:22.black. He has got an opportunity to move this black.

:26:23. > :26:33.And I would say that is a great shot. Not sure if Stuart can get

:26:34. > :26:36.through to this blue. Know, and he is having a little look

:26:37. > :26:40.to see if he can come off the side cushion and pot this blue. This will

:26:41. > :26:47.be an interesting one. One thing he doesn't want to do is miss

:26:48. > :26:51.completely. That was a clever shot by Stuart Carrington. I thought he

:26:52. > :26:58.would maybe move the black the other way. But obviously, you always run

:26:59. > :27:02.the risk there. The blue was always going close to that corner pocket.

:27:03. > :27:09.He didn't get a cue ball. That it on. -- left it on.

:27:10. > :27:16.The longest frame of the match so far. We have had another one. Around

:27:17. > :27:32.the same sort of time frame, 27-28 minutes.

:27:33. > :27:37.He has played this role on. And that's OK.

:27:38. > :27:46.Needed to be a good safety shot, and it was. 85% safety success for

:27:47. > :27:54.Stuart Bingham, and Stuart Carrington's has grabbed up over 80

:27:55. > :27:55.as well. -- crept up. What an intriguing contest this has

:27:56. > :28:10.turned out to be. From a stage where, at one time, it

:28:11. > :28:13.looked as if it was almost going to be an embarrassing defeat for Stuart

:28:14. > :28:21.Carrington. Absolutely far from it now.

:28:22. > :28:29.That was a good shot. You can guarantee you wouldn't have been too

:28:30. > :28:38.happy playing that with the way he is feeling at the moment.

:28:39. > :28:47.Stuart Carrington, having a long, hard think about this.

:28:48. > :28:59.He has done so well to get any kind of foothold in this match. And

:29:00. > :29:04.here's close to turning this into a genuine contest. -- he is close. For

:29:05. > :29:18.the 2017 world champion. STUDIO: Well, we have to leave it at

:29:19. > :29:22.this crucial point, but our time is up on BBC Two. Coverage continues by
