:01:15. > :01:22.This has been called the most unlikely semi-final line-up in over

:01:22. > :01:32.a two decades as some of the world's most experienced players

:01:32. > :01:34.

:01:34. > :01:38.went tumbling out at the bottom Both players ranked outside the

:01:38. > :01:48.world top ten, attention inevitably played its part in their opening

:01:48. > :01:51.

:01:51. > :02:01.First time for up Ricky Walden and Barry Hawkins in the same theatre.

:02:01. > :02:06.Plenty of nerves. Ricky Walden played Super in the first two games.

:02:06. > :02:16.Basically, he has laid down a mark here saying, I can play just like

:02:16. > :02:27.

:02:27. > :02:32.everybody else. The crowd loves Barry looked so are at of sorts,

:02:32. > :02:42.didn't he? To have missed so many balls, it was a miracle he managed

:02:42. > :02:46.

:02:46. > :02:50.The Barry Hawkins goes to the interval with plenty to think about.

:02:50. > :03:00.At the interval I am sure Barry Hawkins would have spent a little

:03:00. > :03:09.

:03:09. > :03:13.bit of time with Terry, trying to He could not have hit it better.

:03:13. > :03:23.reflection, that is as good as Barry could have got out of the

:03:23. > :03:26.

:03:26. > :03:31.His highest break was 36 so far and he was 6-2 down last night. Ricky

:03:31. > :03:37.Walden are more comfortable of the to throwing in two centuries on the

:03:37. > :03:47.way. They are still in the ninth frame as we pick it up. Both

:03:47. > :03:54.

:03:54. > :04:00.The you join us at quite a crucial stage. It has been an awkward frame,

:04:00. > :04:09.30 minutes were both players have had lots of chances. Barry has not

:04:09. > :04:15.settled. He has not been cueing very well. Ricky Walden has had a

:04:15. > :04:25.few chances to win this frames. He looks and little bit tired. This is

:04:25. > :04:38.

:04:38. > :04:48.all new for these players. Lots of And another nervy shot coming up.

:04:48. > :05:12.

:05:12. > :05:20.He got up, he got back down again, He will be feeling a little better

:05:20. > :05:30.now. These men are good friends, but Ricky has let this one slip

:05:30. > :05:34.Well that settle Barry Hawkins down? Ricky Walden should have

:05:34. > :05:41.taken this frame and he has not. There are three frames difference

:05:41. > :05:46.now. Steve, if you had been Terry Griffiths in Barry Hawkins corner

:05:46. > :05:51.before he walked out this afternoon, what words of encouragement might

:05:51. > :05:58.you have given him? To say that every session can be a different

:05:58. > :06:02.story that unfolds. Even if you are 6-2 behind, if you can win the

:06:02. > :06:07.First couple's frames, the heat becomes on your opponent very

:06:07. > :06:12.quickly. You can look at the scoreboard, but if you are not

:06:12. > :06:19.getting enough table time, you can still freeze. He has certainly not

:06:19. > :06:24.frozen so far, he has beaten at the world number one in this

:06:24. > :06:29.championship. How difficult is it to reproduce that kind of form in a

:06:29. > :06:35.Crucible semi-final? It is difficult, and he did start off the

:06:35. > :06:42.more met -- at the more nervous of the two. Terry will be saying to

:06:42. > :06:48.him, forget about yesterday. If you can go out and when the session 5-3,

:06:48. > :06:57.anything better than that it is a bonus. You take each session as it

:06:57. > :07:01.comes along. Go out and win the first four frames, 3-1. Do not look

:07:01. > :07:06.at the scores, just take each session and each frame as it comes

:07:06. > :07:16.along. It is a cliche, but I am sure that is what Terry will be

:07:16. > :07:22.

:07:22. > :07:27.We will join them just a after the What about this for a break off?

:07:27. > :07:33.There have not been many worse than this. It is probably the worst one

:07:33. > :07:37.we had seen in this year's World Championship. Straight away he has

:07:37. > :07:43.given Ricky Walden a chance to settle down because Ricky looked

:07:43. > :07:48.very tense even though he led 6-2. He had chances to open up a five

:07:48. > :07:55.frame advantage. Let's see if he can produce some of the snooker

:07:55. > :08:03.that he produced in the first game where he made two centuries. It is

:08:03. > :08:13.a great opportunity for this player from Chester. He was brought up in

:08:13. > :08:15.

:08:15. > :08:25.North Wales but is now back to He has certainly settled down out

:08:25. > :08:27.

:08:27. > :08:34.For someone who has played so well in this championship, Barry Hawkins

:08:34. > :08:43.has not produced yet. When you get to the semi-final and the one table,

:08:43. > :08:47.it is a totally different theatre altogether. It really is. If I was

:08:47. > :08:53.using the Wimbledon analogy, you have been playing on the outside

:08:53. > :09:03.court for the first week and a half, then you are Centre Court for the

:09:03. > :09:11.

:09:11. > :09:16.He has done it again, it is the sort of thing Ricky does. He looks

:09:16. > :09:22.absolutely terrific and all of a sudden he loses focus. He did it

:09:22. > :09:30.earlier on in the opening frame exactly the same. When there is a

:09:31. > :09:37.cannon involved, he misses the pot. You're quite right. Barry has

:09:37. > :09:41.really got to start scoring, OK, this is not a great opportunity.

:09:41. > :09:51.But when he does get one, he has got to score for his own peace of

:09:51. > :09:55.

:09:55. > :10:05.Well, that was a much better shot than it looked and he is unlucky

:10:05. > :10:16.

:10:16. > :10:23.not to be on anything here. That He might be able to take this on

:10:23. > :10:27.such a way you can run through and get on the pink or blue. It is just

:10:28. > :10:37.one of those awkward angles were if he screws back he might hit the

:10:38. > :10:38.

:10:38. > :10:45.black. If he runs through, he'd I think I would prefer the screw

:10:45. > :10:55.shot than the run through. He in fact, he doesn't like both and I do

:10:55. > :11:13.

:11:13. > :11:17.Ricky is just ahead in the head-to- heads. He has won four to Barry's 3.

:11:17. > :11:24.The longest match they played was in the qualifiers for the World

:11:24. > :11:32.Championship in 2005. They are fairly evenly matched, these two

:11:32. > :11:39.players. That red is causing a slight problem, the one on the

:11:39. > :11:49.right hand side of the table. He needs a thinner contact here. He

:11:49. > :12:07.

:12:07. > :12:17.If he keeps leaving Barry these chances, you feel it is a matter of

:12:17. > :12:23.

:12:23. > :12:27.time before he gets back into Just for his own piece so mind and

:12:27. > :12:37.to make him feel as if he is truly involved in the semi-final, he

:12:37. > :13:05.

:13:05. > :13:15.That is not quite as planned but he just needs one good shock to get

:13:15. > :13:28.

:13:28. > :13:34.He is slightly the wrong side of You want to keep them as simple as

:13:34. > :13:44.possible. He is having to change Planner all the time because the

:13:44. > :13:46.

:13:46. > :13:56.shot before he played to get on the When you're struggling a little bit,

:13:56. > :14:08.

:14:08. > :14:17.like he is, you wanted everything He has got an angle here to pot

:14:17. > :14:25.this and may be spun around the All depends on the angle he is

:14:26. > :14:31.faced with here. If you can play position on this pink, it is

:14:31. > :14:41.perfect to pot and move all the reds out. If that is available,

:14:41. > :15:01.

:15:01. > :15:07.He is one good positional shot away You could see he cued across that

:15:07. > :15:15.slightly. He played it with a trace of side to play the shot that you

:15:15. > :15:25.said. And he just cued slightly across it. It would have opened the

:15:25. > :15:41.

:15:41. > :15:47.reds up and that is what he thought I cannot believe what I'm seeing.

:15:47. > :15:54.Ricky put a little bit of unwanted side on that. Worrying signs for

:15:54. > :16:04.Ricky even though he is three frames and fun. -- three frames in

:16:04. > :16:09.

:16:09. > :16:19.He is leading 6-3 and he seems to be under pressure. He has got to

:16:19. > :16:38.

:16:38. > :16:44.All the coaching in the world does not help you when you're out there

:16:44. > :16:54.on your own. You have got to do it yourself, or rely on your technique.

:16:54. > :16:54.

:16:54. > :16:59.He has just lost his game at the If I was Ricky Walden, I would be

:16:59. > :17:09.trying extra hard. His opponent certainly is not punishing him up

:17:09. > :17:14.

:17:14. > :17:19.when he misses. If he could step up The way Ricky is feeling and some

:17:19. > :17:29.of the pots he is missing, the way he is walking around, he does not

:17:29. > :17:29.

:17:29. > :18:56.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 87 seconds

:18:56. > :19:01.That is a useful little flicker Yes, it is a wonderful venue this

:19:01. > :19:11.Crucible Theatre, but when you came goes west, it is absolutely

:19:11. > :19:20.

:19:20. > :19:26.We keep talking about how fast these cloths are, they are

:19:26. > :19:34.brilliant to play on when you're cueing well. When you lose that cue

:19:34. > :19:44.action, they can make you look a little bit silly at times. That is

:19:44. > :19:46.

:19:46. > :19:53.to Ricky's advantage of there, He is 24 points behind. He has a

:19:53. > :19:59.straightforward safety shot. You never know sometimes. Just looking

:19:59. > :20:09.to see if he plays the red next to the pink, up what that pink will do

:20:09. > :20:32.

:20:32. > :20:42.Even his safety play, he is just You would not believe you could win

:20:42. > :20:44.

:20:44. > :20:54.three frames with the highest break That was pretty good. In fact, he

:20:54. > :21:10.

:21:10. > :21:20.may be snookered. It is just not That is what he is faced with. This

:21:20. > :21:25.

:21:25. > :21:35.That was risky, he tried to just clip that on the way back down. It

:21:35. > :22:05.

:22:05. > :22:15.The green will leave him nicely on I think that white seemed to fly

:22:15. > :22:38.

:22:38. > :22:48.Just wondering about those two reds He can get their off the green.

:22:48. > :23:00.

:23:00. > :23:06.Either of one Krishan or two If you are all to critical, he

:23:06. > :23:16.should not have went anywhere near the pink with that positional shot.

:23:16. > :23:50.

:23:50. > :24:00.This is a free shot for Ricky. He can take the red that is near the

:24:00. > :24:06.pink. If it goes in he has got the yellow near the corner pocket. It

:24:06. > :24:16.goes past the pink, so it is worth the risk. He will be playing a

:24:16. > :24:24.

:24:24. > :24:34.He got a kick there, believe it or not. That was amazing. It through

:24:34. > :24:37.

:24:37. > :24:47.You could see the red jumper. In fact, that kick helped the red

:24:47. > :24:47.

:24:47. > :26:09.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 87 seconds

:26:09. > :26:19.What has he done here? I mean, that is a terrible shot from Ricky. What

:26:19. > :26:38.

:26:38. > :26:48.The good news for Ricky is, that red on the right-hand side is a bit

:26:48. > :26:55.

:26:55. > :27:00.tricky for Barry Hawkins being I am just wondering whether they

:27:00. > :27:10.are getting a bit nervous because of the prize-money. The runner-up

:27:10. > :27:31.

:27:31. > :27:35.is guaranteed 125,000 and the Yes, you're absolutely right. It

:27:35. > :27:41.gets a little bit embarrassing when you are out there and you keep

:27:42. > :27:46.missing. But somebody has got to grab hold of this match. Ricky has

:27:46. > :27:53.a three frame advantage and he has got to capitalise on Barry's

:27:53. > :28:03.mistakes. He is trying so hard, maybe he is trying that little bit

:28:03. > :28:06.

:28:06. > :28:16.As you say, 73,000. I used to twitch when I played for a fiver.

:28:16. > :28:16.

:28:16. > :28:57.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 87 seconds

:28:57. > :29:07.have seen you on the golf course, Barry has the chance to take

:29:07. > :29:24.

:29:24. > :29:30.Well, it is in but of course the cue ball will be going away from

:29:30. > :29:40.the red. It might be a kiss of dropping it in dead weight. Trying

:29:40. > :30:11.

:30:11. > :30:18.to leave the cue ball slightly off Somehow, Barry Hawkins has got

:30:18. > :30:28.himself just two swims behind with a highest break of 36. -- two

:30:28. > :30:37.

:30:37. > :30:41.Ricky has thatted enough of the frame. He concedes. . He leaves, I

:30:41. > :30:46.don't blame him. Too very poor frames. Barry Hawkins must be

:30:46. > :30:50.delighted. High break of 36 and he is only two behind now.

:30:50. > :30:54.HAZEL IRVINE: All defies belief. Proof that snooker can make you a

:30:54. > :30:57.head banger as we saw from Barry Hawkins in that one. Frustrations

:30:57. > :31:03.from both men, how do you assess what we have seen? How do you

:31:03. > :31:08.explain it? I think it is safe to say that is the occasion getting to

:31:08. > :31:13.them. It is the importance of trying to get over that line, trying to get

:31:13. > :31:17.into the final. It is such a big match for both. Everybody suffers

:31:17. > :31:22.nerves and these guys have played great to get to this stage. At the

:31:22. > :31:28.moment, the occasion and maybe the arena has changed. The one table set

:31:28. > :31:32.up, that, one player starts to miss, sometimes it is like contagious, the

:31:32. > :31:36.other guy starts to miss. When one guy can grab this hatch pick the

:31:36. > :31:44.scruff of the neck, he could run away with it. But at the moment,

:31:45. > :31:49.Ricky, even though he is 6-2, he looks more nervous of the two.

:31:49. > :31:55.was the one that came out full of confidence, knocking in a couple of

:31:55. > :32:00.century, look looked great. You try and work out why one day you can

:32:00. > :32:04.play so well and even within the same session, it seems to go wrong.

:32:04. > :32:07.Very fine margins playing the game of snooker. It is amazing the

:32:07. > :32:11.standard that achieved the difference between potting a ball

:32:11. > :32:16.and missing is so much. The difference as Ken alluded to there,

:32:16. > :32:20.is as much as in the early rounds is a two table set up and you are not

:32:20. > :32:25.centre of attention. If you are a dull part of the match, there is

:32:25. > :32:29.another game on the other table. All of a sudden all eyes are on you, and

:32:29. > :32:33.all responsibility is on you to produce and intertaken as well as

:32:33. > :32:36.compete. When it goes wrong it can go drastically wrong. Then it

:32:36. > :32:46.becomes catching for the other guy. That is what is happening at the

:32:46. > :32:53.

:32:53. > :32:58.moment. It ain't pretty but it is important.

:32:58. > :33:07.Ricky wept out of the arena, to compose himself. -- went out. In he

:33:07. > :33:10.comes and hits the blue. And we don't know, having got

:33:10. > :33:15.chatting to Ricky, I don't know if they have slept well, it is a huge

:33:15. > :33:20.occasion for both players coming to the semifinal, one table situation,

:33:20. > :33:25.6-2 lead. You would think you would sleep well. It is not always the

:33:25. > :33:29.case. . This is a new ball game. They won't have played in a

:33:30. > :33:34.tournament where they play first to is, first to 30 and then you have a

:33:34. > :33:38.semifinal coming up. All the length of the matches is all new to both of

:33:38. > :33:48.these players, so, all great experience for them, but tough to

:33:48. > :33:48.

:33:48. > :34:30.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 87 seconds

:34:30. > :34:34.trying to get the white on to the he has blocked off the escape down

:34:34. > :34:39.the left hand side of the table. The pink is in the way. Looking at the

:34:39. > :34:42.table, I can't see any other red. He might be forced into taking the pot

:34:42. > :34:50.on and screwing back in to the baulk area.

:34:50. > :35:00.That is the first time I have seen this type of shot. If he takes it

:35:00. > :35:00.

:35:00. > :35:06.on. Ricky feels as if he has got a gap, he might be able two to go in

:35:06. > :35:16.between the black and red. And he did. Well judged.

:35:16. > :35:18.

:35:18. > :35:28.That was an excellent shot. He got That is a beauty through the gap.

:35:28. > :35:34.

:35:34. > :35:39.I wonder whether Barry might choose to play slow roll into the jaws, and

:35:39. > :35:47.try to come to that red. That is a shot he has got if he wants it. We

:35:47. > :35:51.will have to try and take that one Don't like much else.

:35:51. > :35:55.He is looking at maybe coming off the side cushion for it.

:35:55. > :36:05.That would be all right as well. Which ever way he does it, the red

:36:05. > :36:20.

:36:20. > :36:25.is down at the bottom in the corner Ooh, it was there was a red

:36:26. > :36:30.available unthem knocked that red and covered it, so, there is a red

:36:30. > :36:37.with a cut into this right corner, but the red just knocked another red

:36:37. > :36:42.on to it and covered it. Just watch as he sends this red up

:36:42. > :36:52.the table. There is a red available there, and all of a sudden the one

:36:52. > :37:02.

:37:02. > :37:06.he canoned on to went and blocked Well, the one thing Ricky had to do

:37:06. > :37:10.was get that cue ball next to the baulk cushion. There is a red that

:37:10. > :37:16.is pottable. You don't know where the cue ball is going to go but he

:37:16. > :37:20.should have been making it more difficult for Barry.

:37:20. > :37:23.It is one of those situations where he might take this on and try and

:37:23. > :37:30.canon the black, bring it into play, that is what he was thinking about.

:37:30. > :37:34.There is an angle to pot that red and screw over on to the black.

:37:34. > :37:39.If he takes the pot on, screws the white across the table, he could

:37:39. > :37:43.bring that black into play. If he doesn't see easy safety shot, there

:37:43. > :37:48.would be nothing wrong with playing this. He might be able to get the

:37:48. > :37:58.back red, find the gap. No, he has took the shot on.

:37:58. > :38:01.Good pot that, den ni, when you haven't had your game most of the

:38:01. > :38:06.match. A lot of pressure on that one.

:38:06. > :38:11.If he doesn't hit that red he would have put the black on, but he has

:38:11. > :38:21.the yellow and green to go at. Ricky's shot before all the more

:38:21. > :38:23.

:38:23. > :38:28.sloppy. He wasn't in any trouble. It was an enforced error that.

:38:28. > :38:32.It is slightly running away from Ricky, he hasn't settled. Barry

:38:32. > :38:35.hasn't in fairness, but one or two mistakes he doesn't need to be

:38:35. > :38:40.making. As you say, when he is in front as

:38:40. > :38:45.well. It is strange how it works out. He came out 6-2, you would

:38:45. > :38:50.think he would be the more confident and relaxed of the two player, but

:38:50. > :38:54.neither seem comfortable yet. Although, if I was Barry Hawkins I

:38:54. > :39:04.would be jumping through hoops to be only 6-4 behind with a high break of

:39:04. > :39:23.

:39:24. > :39:28.You can see him strike the white there on the top. That creates the

:39:28. > :39:37.top spin. Has he found the gap? Do you know

:39:37. > :39:45.this might be absolutely perfect. Without a doubt.

:39:45. > :39:55.Struck that beautifully. Much more like Barry Hawkins.

:39:55. > :39:58.Lots of top spin. Couldn't have put it any better.

:39:58. > :40:04.You just sense that Barry is growing in confidence, and that confidence

:40:04. > :40:14.has been given to him, because Ricky, his opponent, has been

:40:14. > :40:27.

:40:27. > :40:32.Barry had a little look there, that red closest to the black spot would

:41:02. > :41:07.the way, tries to get the black back moment. It seems to happen when you

:41:07. > :41:12.are struggle for your game a bit. The balls seem to land up or are a

:41:12. > :41:16.bit awkward. I am wondering, he has a good angle on the green, his

:41:16. > :41:26.background to the yellow, a couple of reds he can play on from the

:41:26. > :41:27.

:41:27. > :41:30.yellow. He had an angle on the green there,

:41:30. > :41:34.which I don't think he locked at. He could have played the grown and

:41:35. > :41:38.played a canon on to the three reds behind the pink. He was always going

:41:39. > :41:44.to be on something, can he get the black into play with a nice canon?

:41:44. > :41:49.He could do, looking at that picture. You have to trust your

:41:49. > :41:59.ability, play the correct shot and hope you get the correct canon.

:41:59. > :42:01.

:42:01. > :42:05.Beautifully controlled, that, a bit more bomb bottom on the cue ball

:42:05. > :42:11.required for that shot. Struck really well. Still awkward the way

:42:11. > :42:16.these are at the moment. Don't quite know what angle he has

:42:16. > :42:20.got, if any on the black, it is not too bad. Should be able only do out

:42:20. > :42:30.for the red on the right hand side here.

:42:30. > :42:30.

:42:30. > :42:37.But you have to pot the black at the result he has had.

:42:37. > :42:40.REFEREE: Touching ball. REFEREE: Touching ball.

:42:40. > :42:44.Put the black safe. Touching ball. Tried to do a bit too much with

:42:44. > :42:48.that. If I was rickey I I would be trying to get the black into play.

:42:48. > :42:53.You have to make sure that red safe near the pocket. What a mistake that

:42:53. > :42:57.was from Barry. I don't know why he hit it so hard. As long as he

:42:57. > :43:01.stunned the black he was on the right hand side guaranteed. Ewas he

:43:01. > :43:06.trying to play the screw back an move the red off the spot? That was

:43:06. > :43:13.asking a lot. That is what happens when you are under the cosh.

:43:14. > :43:18.You make wrong decisions. That is where Ricky would love to

:43:18. > :43:23.play the cue ball so he doesn't leave the red near the corner. If he

:43:23. > :43:27.tries to get there... And move the black at the same time, it is a

:43:27. > :43:31.slight problem. I think I would be playing off the black here,

:43:32. > :43:38.three-quarter ball run through. As long as he doesn't get the double

:43:38. > :43:41.kiss. Well, he needs the grown to come to

:43:41. > :43:46.his rescue, that is a terrible shot again.

:43:46. > :43:51.Understand that one, I know there was a double kiss maybe involved,

:43:51. > :43:56.but honestly such an easy shot to play. Control the cue ball a lot

:43:56. > :44:06.better. Once again, he has left a red there

:44:06. > :44:24.

:44:24. > :44:34.but he has been fortunate to leave No no value in taking that pot on.

:44:54. > :45:03.A little thin significant off that he can get to the blue. He is

:45:03. > :45:07.looking at something else, but that has to be the best shot.

:45:07. > :45:12.That is what he tried, but he is a long way off, he has left a path

:45:12. > :45:17.back down the table. He can play-off the reds to the left

:45:17. > :45:27.of the pink as we look at it, has he have got the last shot correct, this

:45:27. > :45:41.

:45:41. > :45:46.That was a good shot. Well played. There is a red on the reasoned, but

:45:46. > :45:50.don't think there is a path back down to the baulk area. There would

:45:50. > :45:53.be a gap between the two reds on the left, but the one that is stuck

:45:54. > :45:57.directly behind the black spot, tightly on the rail, would be in the

:45:57. > :46:01.way. So if he does take the pot on, there is a fair bit of pressure on

:46:01. > :46:11.this. If he tried to pot that, he would

:46:11. > :46:33.

:46:33. > :46:39.have to try and find a gap. So that Well, it is coming into the jaws, it

:46:49. > :47:22.

:47:22. > :47:32.Ricky Walden, he needs either this frame or the one before the

:47:52. > :47:55.The red on the right hand side cushion is a wit bit of a problem

:47:55. > :47:59.because Barry would like to go off the side cushion to the other side

:47:59. > :48:08.and back for the red together op the top. The one on the right hand side

:48:08. > :48:12.might be a bit of a problem. He has judged it well, though, John.

:48:12. > :48:16.He played the shot that you suggested.

:48:16. > :48:20.Played it pretty well, although Ricky had a look at the red along

:48:20. > :48:30.the cushion, but the way things have been going, I don't think he wants

:48:30. > :48:35.

:48:35. > :48:41.to be taking that on, but... He is Well played.

:48:41. > :48:51.He made it look easy. Now can he restore a bit of confidence, because

:48:51. > :48:54.

:48:54. > :49:01.that was a terrific shot he played get himself to the mid-session

:49:01. > :49:06.interval, get on the practice table, because he has lost his rhythm at

:49:06. > :49:09.the moment. The pink has come back, it has covered the red, that was a

:49:09. > :49:14.dolly straight into the corner pocket. You can see it, pink has

:49:14. > :49:24.come back and blocked the path, so the bottom red is obviously

:49:24. > :49:32.

:49:32. > :49:36.He can play a canon here. The red that is close toast the black, move

:49:36. > :49:46.that along. He should leave himself on the other two reds. Chance to

:49:46. > :50:03.

:50:03. > :50:07.score a few points here. He played the cappen outed, John,

:50:07. > :50:17.but he could have played it a bit better than this.

:50:17. > :50:20.

:50:20. > :50:24.He needed a fuller contact on that red.

:50:24. > :50:34.Under the circumstance, that was a good shot. It wobbled a few times,

:50:34. > :50:58.

:50:58. > :51:03.Not the best positional shot that Barry has ever played. He is walking

:51:03. > :51:13.round the table smiling to himself. Well, he has plenty to smile at at

:51:13. > :51:26.

:51:26. > :51:33.the moment, because he has won two Well, it is not pretty to watch at

:51:33. > :51:43.the moment, and they just keep running out of position, they are

:51:43. > :51:47.

:51:47. > :51:57.just under so much pressure at the moment, these two boys, no prizes

:51:57. > :51:58.

:51:58. > :52:06.for guessing where the cue ball will behind the brown!

:52:06. > :52:16.You got it, John. It is one of those frames, bitty,

:52:16. > :52:18.

:52:18. > :52:28.hard fought. Balls are horrible. Get frames like that, you have to

:52:28. > :52:30.

:52:30. > :52:34.put up with it and try and win them. If he goes twice across the table

:52:34. > :52:38.there, to land, he can leave that red. So he is going the other way

:52:38. > :52:41.round to get into a similar position.

:52:41. > :52:51.He could push this red over the pocket here.

:52:51. > :52:55.

:52:55. > :52:59.Oh, he has flicked it. He settles He was sticking that straight up.

:52:59. > :53:09.There is a red Ricky can pot but it is tough and you couldn't guarantee

:53:09. > :53:14.

:53:14. > :53:20.any position, so it doesn't seem like any great value.

:53:20. > :53:26.He is back looking at the pot. He has too easy safety shots, he can

:53:26. > :53:32.play-off the one to the right of the white. He can go thin off the red

:53:32. > :53:42.near the middle pocket. Thin off this one. Must make sure he

:53:42. > :53:56.

:53:56. > :54:05.Have to make sure this is nice thin. A massive target to go between the

:54:05. > :54:08.It is all a struggle at the moment, even that simple safety shot.

:54:08. > :54:18.Nowhere near where it should have been. How he has hit a jaw there, he

:54:18. > :54:22.

:54:22. > :54:26.He has more or less got away with it. Ricky might take this on,

:54:26. > :54:34.because he is coming twice across the table. So it is a bit of a free

:54:34. > :54:38.shot. Well played.

:54:38. > :54:43.Look where the white has finished. He was hoping that he didn't pot the

:54:43. > :54:47.red. He has potted some of the finest

:54:47. > :54:55.ones I have ever seen in this frame. To roll in behind, this is, this is

:54:55. > :54:59.tricky, you have to be careful he This is going to be difficult to

:56:30. > :56:35.That is not bad. He has the yellow and the reds clear now.

:56:35. > :56:45.Ricky Walden, can he get a bit of rhythm going here? He badly needs

:58:57. > :59:02.This doesn't look particularly appealing.

:59:02. > :59:06.It is going to be a struggle to get on this.

:59:06. > :59:11.Well, the one thing you don't want to do is try and do too much with

:59:11. > :59:17.that cue ball, and miss the pot. He could quite easily take the six

:59:22. > :59:27.I think I would be sending this red round the angle, and getting the red

:59:27. > :59:32.somewhere up near the blue, if you take the cut on down the cushion, I

:59:32. > :59:39.wouldn't fancy that. Even at the best of times. Well, he is looking

:00:34. > :00:46.

:00:46. > :00:50.it or not! He's even getting tense now. I think he'll be taking the

:01:36. > :01:40.these across the table sometimes. I was going to say it shouldn't be a

:03:42. > :03:49.gimme. It'll be a very relieved Ricky Walden. It looked as if he was

:03:59. > :04:00.

:04:00. > :04:04.again. It's seven - for two Ricky Walden. That gentleman is known as

:04:04. > :04:09.Medal Man. His name is Peter. He takes part in the daily competitions

:04:19. > :04:20.

:04:20. > :04:23.set. We have a fairly interesting crew

:04:23. > :04:29.down here every day and they're all very friendly and make us feel very

:04:29. > :04:39.welcome. Steve, a huge relief for Ricky Walden because he must have

:04:39. > :04:43.

:04:43. > :04:48.been so frustrated at seeing this advantageous being squandered. We've

:04:48. > :04:52.all played that type of material. It's not nice when you come this far

:04:52. > :04:56.an event to all of a sudden store. Barry Hawkins doesn't look like a

:04:56. > :05:03.winner at the moment. It's interesting that we saw Ricky Walden

:05:03. > :05:07.eating something there. We've all commented that he looks very jaded

:05:07. > :05:13.and lacking in energy. Is this where the fatigue of two weeks of hard

:05:13. > :05:16.graft starts to show? We know he is a fit young lad and has run

:05:16. > :05:21.marathons in the past. I don't think fitness or tiredness should be a

:05:21. > :05:27.factor for him. But we are in the semifinals. It is only still the

:05:27. > :05:32.halfway stage so there's still the four sessions of the semi-final and

:05:32. > :05:36.the final. He may be feeling a little bit tired. You don't get much

:05:36. > :05:40.sleep when you're in this championship. He may be just chewing

:05:40. > :05:45.on a bit of banana to get a bit of energy. But so often in the years

:05:46. > :05:53.we've been coming here on a Friday afternoon in the semifinals, this is

:05:53. > :05:56.Jen really where we start to see the fatigue coming out. -- generally.

:05:56. > :06:02.The effect of being in the studio, the same thing applies. You feel

:06:02. > :06:07.like you've been here for ever. Whilst that's nice in one respect

:06:07. > :06:15.because you get into the flow of it, if you hit the brick wall it's tough

:06:15. > :06:21.to get out of it. John, Dennis, have you hit the brick wall yet?

:06:21. > :06:29.DENNIS TAYLOR: Not quite yet, Hazel, but Barry Hawkins has hit the table

:06:29. > :06:36.with that cue ball. It's almost stop. -- stuck. The mid-session

:06:36. > :06:43.interval is coming up after this frame. If Ricky Walden could go to

:06:43. > :06:52.that mid-session interval with four friends intact, he'd be delighted,

:06:52. > :06:58.especially the way he's performed in this session. This will be a body

:06:59. > :07:08.blow for Barry Hawkins. He may have had a kick on the brown but he had a

:07:09. > :07:33.

:07:33. > :07:40.great chance. He should have been about that shot and we've got it

:07:41. > :07:50.here. You can just roll the Browning, roll the blue in and then

:07:50. > :07:57.the framers one. -- roll the Crown Inn. -- roll the brown in and then

:07:57. > :08:07.the frame is won. This is the kick. He was playing a cannon but he

:08:07. > :08:15.

:08:15. > :08:25.shouldn't have been in that seems to take off, off the back

:08:25. > :08:52.

:09:02. > :09:32.

:09:32. > :09:42.he's got to force this in. And he's played that beautifully. He's played

:09:42. > :09:52.it so well, he's got a choice. If he plays the other one, he'll be on the

:12:07. > :12:13.You can run out of position quite easily. Absolutely. We've all been

:13:31. > :13:35.that little flick on the red is just what the doctor ordered because it's

:13:35. > :13:42.the correct side of the blue. It was a good pot, he had a bit of good

:13:42. > :13:47.fortune with a cannon - can he capitalise on it? Earlier in the

:15:02. > :15:10.through to the one he thought he would be on but the one just behind

:15:10. > :15:13.the two reds in front of the pink - can he see enough of that? I don't

:15:13. > :15:17.know, Dennis, but it's just an example of him not thinking straight

:15:17. > :15:23.out there to play that shot and cannon those two reds of the pink.

:15:23. > :15:33.I've never seen him do that before. Well recovered, though. That'll

:15:33. > :15:48.

:15:48. > :15:54.between the green and brown to get on the red over the middle pocket

:15:54. > :16:04.and can get nicely onto the black. He should be going to the

:16:04. > :16:25.

:16:25. > :16:29.mid-session interval having won the does, it's a foul. He's got to

:16:29. > :16:36.nominate the colours. The referee will ask him to nominate the car.

:16:37. > :16:46.He's not landed on a position... He's got a 52 point lead and would

:16:47. > :17:00.

:17:00. > :17:10.love a side read as an insurance done any damage. It's just a matter

:17:10. > :17:13.

:17:13. > :17:23.of not thinking clearly. They yellow, blue and brown are to

:17:23. > :17:26.

:17:26. > :17:36.Riddick target now. -- our a to reflect target. -- they are a too

:17:36. > :17:45.

:17:45. > :17:55.Barry. The red is behind the pink. If he catches it correctly, he won't

:17:55. > :17:58.

:17:58. > :18:02.cannon the reds to the left of the blue spot. So he'll take this on.

:18:02. > :18:12.I'm just wondering whether he's worried about contacting that read

:18:12. > :18:20.

:18:20. > :18:23.on the way back. He's had a look at to be wary of not sticking your

:18:23. > :18:32.opponent back in when you've worked hard to get your 52 point lead. The

:18:32. > :18:35.last thing you want us to give him a decent opener. He's looked at the

:18:36. > :18:44.possibility of taking this part onto the right corner. It looks as if he

:18:44. > :18:54.wants to have a go at this. -- this pot. Is he taking the safety shot

:18:54. > :18:54.

:18:54. > :18:58.of? He took it on and that's a typical Ricky Walden type shot.

:18:59. > :19:01.deserves to be on one after that. That was a fabulous pot and last

:19:01. > :19:11.frame he pottered about three crackers with no shot but that was a

:19:11. > :19:38.

:19:38. > :19:43.beauty. That's probably his best ball. He had the choice to play on a

:19:43. > :19:48.red or move a few round. The top one obviously potted. I just don't know

:19:48. > :19:58.whether he's played that particularly well or whether the cue

:19:58. > :20:09.

:20:09. > :20:16.trying to make things happen. -- shot. It was difficult to get the

:20:16. > :20:26.cannon and guaranteed position. In fact, he hit that so hard he's

:20:26. > :20:31.

:20:31. > :20:40.get to the mid-session interval and get on the practice table. I think

:20:40. > :20:50.both players will be heading to the practice table. Yes, the highest

:20:50. > :21:01.

:21:01. > :21:03.so far is just 32. I'm a little bit worried for him at the moment. I

:21:04. > :21:09.know he's in front of that of the two players, he looks the more

:21:09. > :21:18.tired. And he looks frustrated. First time I've seen Ricky Walden do

:21:18. > :21:22.that. The way he chopped his cue, he was angry with himself. He's going

:21:22. > :21:29.to leave the red on. He needs the brown and blue to come to his

:21:29. > :21:32.rescue. He can pot this and get up onto the black but we did see Ricky

:21:32. > :21:36.get a bit annoyed with himself. Let's see if it affects this shot.

:21:36. > :21:46.He's spotted something on the cue ball so Paul Collier, the referee,

:21:46. > :22:10.

:22:10. > :22:14.of genius to clear from here. These balls are not horrible position.

:22:14. > :22:23.Three reds, all on cushions. The green that he's just played on the

:22:23. > :22:30.other one. It just might be a case of getting 16 points here. I don't

:22:30. > :22:33.know if you can get yourself back in the frame. He's faced with one of

:22:33. > :22:39.those tricky little ones - the harder you hit it, the harder they

:22:39. > :22:43.are. He's played that very nicely and given himself a chance to go for

:22:43. > :22:47.the one near the middle pocket. He can play to just not that out. He

:22:47. > :22:51.could leave himself on the other one, also, so a bit of a chance

:22:51. > :22:58.here. That was an excellent pot down the cushion. Had a couple of those

:22:58. > :23:08.today. Tough to play and... I'm surprised, I can't understand that

:23:08. > :23:14.

:23:14. > :23:23.shot. Why not play the cannon on the shot. Even if you haven't pushed the

:23:23. > :23:26.other red on, it would've been than using the rest. -- easier than. He's

:23:26. > :23:36.not thinking straight. He needs the black to come to his rescue and it

:23:36. > :23:57.

:23:57. > :24:07.swerve to potted. -- pot it. Ricky's pouring himself a glass of

:24:07. > :24:39.

:24:39. > :24:43.water out. The mid-session interval going to miss. He's got an angle on

:24:43. > :24:53.the black. Has he got one good cannon left in him here? The green

:24:53. > :24:53.

:24:53. > :25:40.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 87 seconds

:25:40. > :25:50.is also safe. Barry won't be too out here. Yes, excellent. The

:25:50. > :26:25.

:26:25. > :26:35.1-person escape looks to be the only trouble. Where has he found the? --

:26:35. > :26:39.

:26:39. > :26:44.can come off the side cushion, similar to the last shot, and hit

:26:44. > :26:54.the cushion first, he can get the red back at the table. Don't want

:26:54. > :26:57.

:26:57. > :27:04.the red hitting the black. That's could take this read on and move the

:27:05. > :27:14.green of the side rail at the same time. I like that shot a Lott,

:27:15. > :27:31.

:27:31. > :27:36.black? Not quite. It's funny - we mentioned earlier in the frame when

:27:36. > :27:46.he played that shot whether it would come back to haunt him, sticking the

:27:46. > :28:05.

:28:05. > :28:08.green safe. It certainly stopped him yellow, he'll be safe and won't need

:28:08. > :28:18.the difficult green but he should be able to get accurate cross between

:28:18. > :28:33.

:28:33. > :28:41.the blue and yellow. cup of tea with a few sugars I

:28:41. > :28:49.think. Perk himself up, ready to come back. He's still two frames in

:28:49. > :28:59.front. At least it's looking like that. You say that and look where

:28:59. > :29:13.

:29:13. > :29:23.he's put the white! There's only one needed but barring that snooker,

:29:23. > :29:24.

:29:24. > :29:28.he's won the mini-session 31. -- three - one. At first glance, that

:29:28. > :29:34.appeared quite a clever shot to stick the blue safe. Ricky hasn't

:29:34. > :29:39.hit it at all well there. I thought it hit him -- gave him a good chance

:29:39. > :29:49.to get behind the black. It wouldn't have been clever if Ricky had played

:29:49. > :30:13.

:30:13. > :30:19.That was a nice little slip of the It looks like he is going to be two

:30:19. > :30:25.behind, at 7-5. What a game

:30:25. > :30:29.You mentioned it John, that recce will go for a cup of tea with a

:30:29. > :30:35.couple of sugars to give himself a bit of energy.

:30:35. > :30:39.If you put the kettle on I will just have one sugar in mine, John and we

:30:39. > :30:44.will be back for more of this fascinating semifinal. Doesn't

:30:44. > :30:47.matter about the blue. The snooker hasn't been pretty but Barry Hawkins

:30:47. > :30:53.won't mind that, he has won the littleman anysession, three frames

:30:53. > :30:56.to one, he is only two behind at 7-5.

:30:56. > :31:02.Ricky Walden's advantage has been halved and I think the boys were

:31:02. > :31:06.saying in commentary there, his thinking seems a bit skewed. He

:31:06. > :31:12.looks a bit muddled. Necessary never really got going and it has gone

:31:12. > :31:17.from bad to worse. Both player, very low standard by the standards of

:31:17. > :31:22.semifinals of the World Championships. Highest break, 32 for

:31:22. > :31:26.that session of the two, it won't affect Barry Hawkins as badly as

:31:26. > :31:30.Ricky Walden. He has something to protect and he hasn't protected it

:31:30. > :31:34.very well. What do you think could be the problem? We have talked about

:31:34. > :31:43.fatigue. I am not sure you are a fan of that particular explanation or

:31:43. > :31:46.not, Ken. He looks tire. It might be pressure. Being tired muddles your

:31:46. > :31:50.thought process, maybes you play shots that not the right shot. I

:31:50. > :31:54.mean we saw in that last frame, there, he had a perfect angle on the

:31:54. > :31:58.black with two reds remaining. To knock the red near the middle

:31:58. > :32:03.pocket, he tried to knock out one red. A completely wrong shot, and

:32:03. > :32:06.that is what pressure does to you. Maybe he didn't get enough sleep,

:32:06. > :32:10.but sometimes the pressure does get to you, and particularly for the

:32:10. > :32:13.realisation of these player, that it is such a big occasion, it is

:32:13. > :32:16.understandable. We are not overcriticising them. We have all

:32:16. > :32:19.been there, I know what it is like, because I know, it has happened to

:32:20. > :32:25.me as well. But sometimes the pressure can muddle your head, and

:32:25. > :32:30.you need a few, and he looks more muddled than Barry Hawkins. I think

:32:30. > :32:34.it could be a couple of sugar, maybe strong coffee for Ricky and Barry

:32:34. > :32:39.Hawkins, his top break still only 36. Well, as you know, when we get

:32:39. > :32:44.to this stage here, snooker is an art form, but it can also be a

:32:44. > :32:52.science, at least it can be here in Sheffield. At the University of

:32:52. > :32:56.Sheffield, in particular, John It is known as the steel city and

:32:56. > :33:00.sometimes as the snooker city, but Sheffield is also very much a

:33:00. > :33:04.science city. And the University of Sheffield has

:33:04. > :33:10.played its part in one of the greatest scientific discoveries in

:33:10. > :33:15.human history. This Professor is a particle physicist. He spends his

:33:15. > :33:21.time in Geneva at certain's Large Hadron Collider where he is working

:33:21. > :33:28.on the atlas project. Here in Sheffield, we are involved

:33:28. > :33:34.in an experiment called the atlas, perment, which is one of two big

:33:34. > :33:38.experiments that runs at the Large Hadron Collider, and reported the

:33:38. > :33:45.first possible discovery of the Higgs boson in the summer of last

:33:45. > :33:49.year. The Higgs Boson is a particle that gives mass to the other

:33:49. > :33:54.fundamental particles. So an electron acquires its mass

:33:55. > :33:59.from the Higgs Boson, if an electron didn't acquire mass like that, it

:33:59. > :34:03.would never hold inside atoms so we won't have atom, so we wouldn't have

:34:03. > :34:13.the world round us, this room, snooker tables or anything like

:34:13. > :34:13.

:34:13. > :34:18.that. So so when something said to me what

:34:18. > :34:25.do you think of hissing bow son, I thought I had lost at Kempton Park.

:34:25. > :34:30.How do you come pine snooker and science. It is smoobg balls. We use

:34:30. > :34:36.snooker ball, throughout physics to explain easy concept, so things like

:34:36. > :34:40.where you have friction, and also things like energy and momentum,

:34:40. > :34:46.which are the properties that the balls have as they roll across the

:34:46. > :34:53.table, but we can also explain much more complicated concepts like

:34:53. > :34:57.quantum physics and sub at Mick particle physic. Can you explain how

:34:58. > :35:02.the large Hadron Collider works? the old type of experiments he used

:35:02. > :35:06.to carry out, we used to take sub-atomic particles and fire them

:35:06. > :35:13.into a stationery target, much the same way as you might neckache a cue

:35:13. > :35:17.ball and fire it into the pack, and some of the energy incoming particle

:35:17. > :35:24.gets turn into new particle, so you get new particles created, and that

:35:24. > :35:28.is what we want to study. But there is only a certain am of energy

:35:28. > :35:33.available, so much more recently, we have built what are called particle

:35:33. > :35:37.colliders, where we take two sub-atomic particle, moving in

:35:38. > :35:43.opposite directions and collide them together, and when they collide,

:35:43. > :35:48.some of the energy that is in the collision is available to create new

:35:48. > :35:56.particle, which can be heavier, like this, which is representing a Higgs

:35:56. > :36:02.Boson. I was flippant about that tierry,

:36:02. > :36:05.what is it? Sure, so it is a type e elementary particle which interacts

:36:05. > :36:09.with the other particles in the universe and through that

:36:09. > :36:13.intersanction gives them mass, so that means that some of them end up

:36:13. > :36:18.heavy and some light. That is important, in particular, because

:36:18. > :36:23.some of these particles, they include the electron, which because

:36:23. > :36:29.they have mass through inter interaccuse -- interaction with

:36:29. > :36:34.Higgs Boson, that means they can form atom, if we didn't have atoms

:36:34. > :36:40.the universe wouldn't exist. We wouldn't exist. Thank you for your

:36:40. > :36:44.time. Playing snooker, I didn't know I was that intelligent. I hope you

:36:44. > :36:49.were paying attention to that you need to pay attention in school to

:36:49. > :36:53.have got the gist of that particular feature, but you know, once upon a

:36:53. > :36:58.time snooker used to provide some children, some players with an

:36:58. > :37:02.excuse not to concentrate on their homework or not even to go school,

:37:02. > :37:09.but Steve Davis is helping to mastermind a new scheme which might

:37:09. > :37:14.help keep them in there. Following the success of functional

:37:14. > :37:17.snooker rolled out last year, the cue zone has gone into schools. This

:37:17. > :37:27.week, local school children were introduced to the initiative at

:37:27. > :37:30.

:37:30. > :37:34.The opportunity to get involved in the functional snooker was

:37:34. > :37:40.discussed, and we thought it was a very very good idea. Something we

:37:40. > :37:44.could use to help students to develop their literacy, and numeracy

:37:44. > :37:48.skills. Look at the kids today, they are enjoying it. I don't think they

:37:48. > :37:53.were that interested in snooker. It is not something that appeals to

:37:53. > :37:56.kids. Because it is funning unional, I think it is attracted them a lot.

:37:56. > :38:01.I don't think they realise they are learning stuff and they are adding

:38:01. > :38:07.it up. They are too busy, I got that score. And they don't think about

:38:07. > :38:10.adding it up. A key objective to the cue zone project is to increase

:38:10. > :38:16.school-children's participation in snooker by 10,000 over the next 12

:38:16. > :38:20.months. As well as being an importanten casual tool, it is hoped

:38:20. > :38:24.the project will encourage a new generation to take up the game in

:38:24. > :38:31.large numbers, by putting an emphasis on having fun.

:38:31. > :38:36.Cue zone into school, it is backed by the WPBSA. We have launched it in

:38:36. > :38:39.12 schools. We have set ourself a target of 10,000. We are confident

:38:39. > :38:44.we can achieve that, because schools have developed themselves in the

:38:44. > :38:48.last ten year, we are confident that young people will engage in snooker

:38:48. > :38:54.and they will see it in a different light. It is a long time since it

:38:54. > :38:58.was a smoke-filled snooker club in the 0s, where it was great. Things

:38:58. > :39:01.have moved on. Xbox is here, different clubs are here, different

:39:01. > :39:08.challenges but snooker is still here, and snooker still has a place

:39:08. > :39:12.to play, many young people's lives. Gone the days of the smokey haul. We

:39:12. > :39:17.know we need to take our sport to the youth of today and to engage

:39:17. > :39:21.here at the academy, it has given us that opportunity to get young people

:39:21. > :39:26.on a snooker table, having fun, but not only just young people having

:39:26. > :39:32.fun, they are learning as well at the same time. If we look at the way

:39:32. > :39:36.that you know, you ask any smoobg player his mental arithmetic is

:39:36. > :39:41.terrific. The one thing we can engage is in arithmetic. The success

:39:41. > :39:43.of it in the UK prompted the association to introduce it into

:39:43. > :39:48.another important market for the sport.

:39:48. > :39:52.China. Interesting enough the association

:39:52. > :39:57.is engaged with 87 country, we believe we are the fastest growing

:39:57. > :40:01.sport in the world. We have seen huge growth, particularly in the Far

:40:01. > :40:06.East as well, and we have returned up from opening a world snooker

:40:06. > :40:10.academy in Beijing, as a world governing body we see this as a

:40:10. > :40:14.global body. This initiative is just the start.

:40:14. > :40:21.10,000 in the next year getting into this. Why are you passionate about

:40:21. > :40:24.this project? I think as we sort of seen-to- year, perhaps kids losing

:40:24. > :40:28.interest in snooker, because perhaps they weren't watching with their

:40:28. > :40:32.parents at home on a television set, and so all of a sudden, there maybe

:40:32. > :40:36.a dearth of enters in this country, at that level. Not abroad but in in

:40:36. > :40:44.this country, so the idea was if snooker, if kids weren't coming to

:40:44. > :40:48.snooker clubs with their parents take snooker to the schools. A more

:40:48. > :40:54.complex mathematical equation, system of the ball balls have multi

:40:54. > :40:59.my case signs on, or whatever you want to do, creates a bit more

:40:59. > :41:07.mathematics involved, that appeals to the teacher, they like the way, a

:41:07. > :41:12.different unfun way of learning. is a great idea. Back many my

:41:12. > :41:16.school. We haven't introduced that to Ireland yet, back in my old

:41:16. > :41:20.school they put a couple of snooker tables in and they said the

:41:20. > :41:25.difference in the children, who go in and play, they mix with the

:41:25. > :41:30.teacher, they have the competition, they mix with some of the girl, but

:41:30. > :41:34.the discipline and the, the sort of how they look after it, how well

:41:35. > :41:39.kept it is, and no fighting, no messing in the snooker room. It is

:41:39. > :41:44.like a Holy Grail in there. And the benefit of that is they are getting

:41:44. > :41:49.more from the students in sort of in the classroom as well. Also another

:41:49. > :41:55.way of introducing it, without the club, because there is clearly a

:41:55. > :41:59.important place for clubs but it is not a popular way into the sports as

:41:59. > :42:03.it once was That is because there is a generation has gone missing with

:42:03. > :42:07.the other entertainment form, but really, a snooker club is a great

:42:07. > :42:12.social atmosphere, and it is a great way to learn among your peers and

:42:12. > :42:17.elders as well. And going back to the old youth club style, it is

:42:17. > :42:21.teaching kids social skills, if you are in your bedroom, playing on an

:42:22. > :42:26.Xbox, fair enough, but going into a club atmosphere teaches you more

:42:26. > :42:32.about life. Good luck with that. Lovely idea. OK, well, as you know

:42:32. > :42:36.Ronnie O'Sullivan has been in chat mode nor the last while. He has been

:42:36. > :42:41.coming back in to snooker to pay the school fees and put food in the

:42:41. > :42:47.fridge. That is a prime motivation for many players, for Barry Hawkins

:42:47. > :42:52.it has been his job for the last 17 year, for Barry reaching the

:42:52. > :43:02.semifinals is the biggest pay day of his career. He has put 52,000 into

:43:02. > :43:05.

:43:05. > :43:08.the bang. His eyes not just on the Big opportunity to try and get to

:43:08. > :43:12.the final of the World Championships, which I have always

:43:12. > :43:16.dreamed about. I am concentrating on the semifinal, if I happen to play

:43:16. > :43:20.really well and get through to the final, then, then it is all of a

:43:20. > :43:25.sudden it is a bit different. There is a few friends that come

:43:25. > :43:29.round and support me, and as far as my wife and my mum and dad and

:43:29. > :43:33.things like that, I have told them to stay away really. If I get to the

:43:33. > :43:38.final I would love them to come up, especially my little boy, because he

:43:38. > :43:45.is at that age he knows what he I am doing, for him to watch me play out

:43:46. > :43:52.there, and for my wife and mum and dad, to see me playing on the

:43:52. > :43:56.biggest stage would be a proud moment for all of us.

:43:56. > :44:02.The mental side of things has been a big part of what was lacking in the

:44:02. > :44:07.past, you know, like the self-belief, especially, Ied

:44:07. > :44:13.self-belief over the year, I have been working on that really hard

:44:13. > :44:18.with Terry Griffiths. If I get to the final, then I have

:44:18. > :44:21.nothing to lose, and perhaps that puts less pressure on me, I suppose,

:44:21. > :44:25.but there will be enough pressure on that situation, getting to the

:44:25. > :44:29.final. I have to deal with it. I have to get through the semifinal

:44:29. > :44:34.first. And Barry's son Harrison I am sure

:44:34. > :44:37.will be watching his every move this afternoon. As for Ricky Walden, it

:44:37. > :44:44.is a big weekend for him here in Sheffield as well. Not just in the

:44:44. > :44:54.snooker sense, because his beloved Liverpool have a derby match against

:44:54. > :45:06.

:45:06. > :45:13.John Parrott's beloved Everton. We When I first turned pro there was

:45:13. > :45:18.only six tournament, now you have 20, 30, it is hectic.

:45:18. > :45:25.I have a bit of anger in there, it some times comes out. Maybe not

:45:25. > :45:33.enough but sometimes it comes out. The last couple of years I have been

:45:33. > :45:36.working really hard, definitely a, worker at the moment.

:45:36. > :45:41.There is loads of characters in the game, it is just the way the game,

:45:41. > :45:50.the actual game has changed. There is not enough joking round. It has

:45:50. > :45:55.become more serious by the I think some player also say I have

:45:55. > :46:01.underachieved. Some will say I have overachieved. I try to look like I

:46:01. > :46:10.give it my best all the time. You can be fitter. I could be

:46:10. > :46:15.fitter. I am not too shabby! Definitely struggle by tournament by

:46:15. > :46:22.tournament, to keep riding in there, it is something I am working on to

:46:22. > :46:28.stay consistent. Hopefully you are wrong with that

:46:29. > :46:33.one. I have the ability to, I think. Well, we put it to Ricky Walden he

:46:33. > :46:37.is not fit enough. I don't think so, he ran the New York Marathon four

:46:37. > :46:42.years ago, he is a marathon man all right, but he has hit the wall a bit

:46:42. > :46:47.today, has Ricky, four more frames to play this afternoon. Has he got

:46:47. > :46:57.the energy to get through in fine style? Back to Dennis and John we

:46:57. > :46:58.

:46:58. > :47:08.go. Thank you Hazel. So it is marathon man Ricky Walden,

:47:08. > :47:25.

:47:25. > :47:29.He has to forget about what has gone A good long pot might just restore

:47:29. > :47:39.recce's confidence. Let us see how close he can get to

:47:39. > :47:49.

:47:49. > :47:59.That is not what he wants to see. And he stuck the red up that he has

:47:59. > :48:09.He could see the backhand coming out a bit. Didn't push the cue through

:48:09. > :48:15.

:48:15. > :48:25.Well, the interval hasn't made a great deal of difference.

:48:25. > :48:25.

:48:25. > :49:51.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 87 seconds

:49:51. > :49:57.Let us see if Ricky can get the long Where is this red going to finish

:49:57. > :50:03.up? That is OK. Just erred on the safety side with that last attempt.

:50:03. > :50:13.A little smile, just, they are both trying the so hard out there and

:50:13. > :50:40.

:50:40. > :50:50.they just can't get a good rhythm That is an excellent shot.

:50:50. > :51:14.

:51:14. > :51:18.That is what he is looking at, and there is no escapes available there.

:51:18. > :51:28.And no easy I ball to just land on if he. Co-s off the side cushion.

:51:28. > :51:29.

:51:29. > :51:32.He will have to be very very precise That is not going to get anywhere

:51:32. > :51:37.near. REFEREE: Foul and a miss. Barry

:51:37. > :51:47.Hawkins four. So that is what can happen when you

:51:47. > :52:02.

:52:02. > :52:06.That was a good line, but this is the trouble now, you hit that a bit

:52:06. > :52:10.harder and it slides off the cushion a bit more.

:52:10. > :52:20.This looks pretty good. Well played.

:52:20. > :52:26.How close with that to the pink there? Just have a look at this.

:52:26. > :52:29.Wow! Of course, if he had hit the pink it

:52:30. > :52:34.would have gone back and he would have been warned. Now he is very

:52:34. > :52:44.close to this, got to be careful he doesn't push this, it is OK striking

:52:44. > :52:46.

:52:46. > :52:55.down but you can still push it if They are difficult shots those.

:52:55. > :53:05.You are worried about pushing it. am not surprised he overcut it.

:53:05. > :53:08.

:53:08. > :53:12.If he had that the correct angle it Yes, a push shot is where the tip of

:53:12. > :53:16.the cue, the cue ball and the object ball are all in contact at the same

:53:16. > :53:20.time. When they are that close together

:53:20. > :53:25.you have to to make sure you get the cue away quickly.

:53:25. > :53:31.Well, the first glance here, he may have to take this on, it is very

:53:31. > :53:37.Pink is definitely covering all the reds downed the right hand side. He

:53:37. > :53:42.can't see any of those. -- down.

:53:42. > :53:46.If he takes I think he has another one he might be able to take on past

:53:46. > :53:50.it and find the gap back down the table.

:53:50. > :53:58.He just played to move that but he has brought the red down. He hit it

:53:58. > :54:03.all wrong, John. Yes, just tough to describe, he has

:54:03. > :54:06.played so well in this Championship. Just completely out of sorts in the

:54:06. > :54:12.semifinal. It can happen and I am feeling for

:54:12. > :54:16.him at the minute. Once he careered into the reds and

:54:16. > :54:21.pink he could have left something easier than this, though.

:54:21. > :54:31.He can take this on, and avoid the canon, on the two reds.

:54:31. > :54:46.

:54:47. > :54:52.He will be OK, bound to be on a Could have done with hitting it

:54:52. > :55:01.harder. He is a tall lad Ricky, he has quiet a reach. It looks like it

:55:01. > :55:11.is the blue. He has had a good luck round.

:55:11. > :55:21.That is the one to the right of that little bunch of red, does it pot? It

:55:21. > :55:21.

:55:21. > :55:31.must do. the semifinal. He got off like a

:55:31. > :55:32.

:55:32. > :55:38.It is all about concentration, he nearly missed that and he loses that

:55:38. > :55:48.bit of concentration. It is amazing. That must have wobbled five or six

:55:48. > :56:10.

:56:10. > :56:15.teems before it went in. He is pretty quick round the table

:56:15. > :56:19.when he gets go, he is a very fluent player. I mean no player wants to

:56:19. > :56:23.play in a session where it is as bitty as this. For Ricky to play at

:56:24. > :56:31.his best, he needs a more fluent an open game, than at the moment he has

:56:31. > :56:35.the pals in pretty decent position here. So he will settle himself down

:56:35. > :56:45.if he can make a decent contribution, without losing the cue

:56:45. > :56:53.

:56:53. > :56:59.He is a bit reluctant to play for the black, but this is helping the

:56:59. > :57:04.situation. That has removed one of the reds that was hampering the

:57:04. > :57:08.black. That is why he didn't play to get on black on that occasion

:57:08. > :57:18.because there is still one more red to the left of the black spot that

:57:18. > :57:20.

:57:20. > :57:30.That will be red, blue and then on to that red that is near the black

:57:30. > :57:30.

:57:30. > :58:14.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 87 seconds

:58:14. > :58:18.So he should be able to pot that and Haze with Ricky into rit here, I am

:58:18. > :58:21.afraid we will have to take our Leigh of you on BBC Two, but don't

:58:21. > :58:25.forget you can access the semifinal, it is on the red butt top and on

:58:25. > :58:32.line until the end of the session. We will update row with news when
