:00:33. > :00:41.Good afternoon. It is a one in the Deptford World Snooker Championship.

:00:42. > :00:47.The team are all here are settling in on the opening day. We're in

:00:48. > :00:52.Winter Gardens. The action taking place just across the square in the

:00:53. > :00:55.Crucible. We have been engrossed in the opening session of a match

:00:56. > :00:58.featuring Shaun Murphy, the runner-up last year and former

:00:59. > :01:04.champion, and Anthony McGill, the young Scot who made such an impact

:01:05. > :01:09.on his debut last year, getting to the quarterfinal, where he met Shaun

:01:10. > :01:12.Murphy in that match. Anthony McGill lost it last year and Shaun Murphy

:01:13. > :01:17.went on to be runner-up in the final. Two friends apiece, they're

:01:18. > :01:25.in the middle of frame five. -- frames. We go live to Stephen Hendry

:01:26. > :01:34.and Dennis Taylor. Thank you very much. A bit of a

:01:35. > :01:53.careless safety shot earlier from Shaun Murphy.

:01:54. > :02:08.Shaun Murphy has attempted at safety shot.

:02:09. > :02:17.Black still out of the game. The pink the highest available. No

:02:18. > :02:28.problem getting to the blue from here.

:02:29. > :02:33.Would not be a bad idea to pot the blue and then the red and possibly

:02:34. > :02:36.play for the pink to get it back up to the high scoring end of the

:02:37. > :02:55.table. It would be better to play for the

:02:56. > :02:59.pink if he could. Staying with the blue. He's going to have to do it

:03:00. > :03:16.now with the blues. Just looking to see if it is worth

:03:17. > :03:23.playing the red to the left of the six. He played for another red

:03:24. > :03:31.impact. Looking to see if there was a possibility of playing a cannon on

:03:32. > :03:53.the red and black. Could open the black from this shot.

:03:54. > :04:07.Not easy to play a cannon on the reds and possibly free the black as

:04:08. > :04:24.well. Not a good chance just yet but might be after this next shot.

:04:25. > :04:48.That is OK. The right-hand red pots. The wrong side of the blue though,

:04:49. > :04:55.needs to keep going. Get back to the reds, it will have

:04:56. > :05:08.to be the green. The wrong side. 35 in front. He is

:05:09. > :05:17.back looking at the blue. He looked at the green. Just needs to avoid

:05:18. > :05:23.the cannon on one of these colours. That is well played. He had a good

:05:24. > :05:34.angle. This will be a test of his hearing.

:05:35. > :06:04.-- his cueing. Just the five extra points and

:06:05. > :06:13.hopefully then a good safety shot. He has that good lead. But there is

:06:14. > :06:23.no colour on percussion. He has got to be very careful. -- on a cushion.

:06:24. > :06:30.He does not have to pot the blue, he could flick it onto a Russian and

:06:31. > :06:44.late a good safety shot. -- onto cushion.

:06:45. > :06:52.He has taken the five point but the blue is back on its spot so he will

:06:53. > :07:06.have to be careful. All the colours in open play. 46 point advantage but

:07:07. > :08:03.still a possible 51. This looks pretty good.

:08:04. > :08:23.He did well. He did not want to bring that back into play. -- black.

:08:24. > :08:32.He could knock that in, get on the blue and then bring the black and

:08:33. > :08:39.red into play. He might have got away with that. Thinking very

:08:40. > :08:43.positive at the moment. What a shot he tried. Unfortunately for him he

:08:44. > :08:57.has not left the red. Quite an important stage of the

:08:58. > :09:04.match for Anthony McGill. Shaun Murphy does not look like his time

:09:05. > :09:08.on the ball is good at the moment. Missing bees by quite a way so

:09:09. > :09:17.perhaps his concentration is not quite where it should be. -- missing

:09:18. > :09:23.bees. He could try to get the lead going into the second session.

:09:24. > :09:32.It took a look at time to think about it and then not playing a very

:09:33. > :09:36.good shot. -- a lot of time. If he can get on the blue he can then

:09:37. > :09:44.cannon into the black and red and maybe then get past the yellow. That

:09:45. > :09:53.is careless from Anthony McGill. One good shot. And back in the frame.

:09:54. > :10:00.This could open not only the black up but the difficult red next to it.

:10:01. > :10:05.If he could just get a cue ball right in the middle of that red and

:10:06. > :10:14.black -- red and black. That will do. Tough but he has got a

:10:15. > :10:28.lovely angle on the red. He could play for the black, but I think just

:10:29. > :10:36.drop it in, leave straight black. I think he is going to have to follow

:10:37. > :10:41.through. It's just ran a little further than

:10:42. > :10:46.he intended. Very delicate now, just a couple of inches short of that and

:10:47. > :10:52.it would have been so easy to pot this. It ran that little bit too

:10:53. > :10:58.far. He's having to use the rest. And he missed a few with the rest,

:10:59. > :11:04.after we said he was the greatest player ever to use that implement.

:11:05. > :11:11.He just made sure of the seven points. Now he has got to try to

:11:12. > :11:48.play snooker. Just because he did not get on the black as he intended.

:11:49. > :11:56.It is anyone's frame all of the sudden. Anthony McGill just got

:11:57. > :12:05.those five extra points a few moments ago. If he had left the blue

:12:06. > :12:44.on the side cushion it would have been a big advantage.

:12:45. > :13:11.Just enough room to slip round the back of that red. The green slightly

:13:12. > :13:24.in the way if he goes down the right-hand side of the table. The

:13:25. > :13:36.left side seems to be easier. There is more room to get to the red. The

:13:37. > :13:45.black just a bit awkward to play that swerve shot around the blues.

:13:46. > :13:58.Slightly in the way. He prefers the right side. Now back looking at the

:13:59. > :14:00.left side. That is the one. Would be very unlucky to go round the back of

:14:01. > :15:06.that. He is going to have to play a tough

:15:07. > :15:19.blue. You felt he was bound to be on a decent blue or pink. In a bit of

:15:20. > :15:30.no man's land. Needs a snooker. Good shot.

:15:31. > :15:39.Need another good pot. You think automatically, going to be on the

:15:40. > :15:57.green. The slightest touch of right-hand side. A little bit

:15:58. > :16:06.surprised he laid off two cushions. -- played. Now he has got to get the

:16:07. > :16:20.snooker behind the black. That is his plan.

:16:21. > :16:23.Came off a little bit square but it hampered Anthony McGill, he only

:16:24. > :16:26.needs the green. If he was not hampered, a chance he could have cut

:16:27. > :16:52.this green in, but not now. It shows you that awkward striking

:16:53. > :17:33.over the lack. -- black. It caused him to miss hit that slightly.

:17:34. > :17:41.He has missed I think three now with the rest, very unusual for Shaun

:17:42. > :17:48.Murphy. He could have pinched that frame. Because Anthony McGill looked

:17:49. > :17:59.favourite and then all of the sudden Shaun Murphy had the chance to take

:18:00. > :18:26.the frame. One pot and he would get himself into the lead.

:18:27. > :18:39.He did not worry about position. It was all about making sure of the pot

:18:40. > :18:46.on the brown. He will want to get this boot in to keep Shaun Murphy in

:18:47. > :18:55.his seat. -- this blue. And he duly does it. Shaun Murphy a bit ragged

:18:56. > :19:02.some of his play at the moment, he has got a little bit to think about.

:19:03. > :19:08.It does not matter about pink Shaun Murphy will stay in his seat. He is

:19:09. > :19:11.out out of the arena so Anthony McGill has got himself into the

:19:12. > :19:16.lead. He leads the former world champion by three frames to two.

:19:17. > :19:21.The world number 30 giving a good account of himself against the world

:19:22. > :19:28.number three and former champion. There was a shot you picked up

:19:29. > :19:35.earlier that might have saved him a bit of aggro. He had to rely on

:19:36. > :19:40.Shaun Murphy missing with the rest. Dennis Taylor pointed out, he's the

:19:41. > :19:46.wrong side of the blue, three reds left on the table and 41 points

:19:47. > :19:50.lead. Anthony McGill decides to pot the blue and then played the safety

:19:51. > :19:54.shot. The blue comes back on the spot and all the colours are in the

:19:55. > :19:58.open. Dennis Taylor put forward the suggestion that he should forego

:19:59. > :20:04.potting the blue for the five points because not over the line the frame.

:20:05. > :20:08.And then it makes it harder for Shaun Murphy to clear up in one

:20:09. > :20:13.visit. As it turned out he parted the blue and played the safety shot

:20:14. > :20:17.but then Shaun Murphy was very close to getting back in the frame. It is

:20:18. > :20:24.amazing, there is the benefit of wisdom and hindsight, but there was

:20:25. > :20:27.a loose safety shot he played trying to lay that snooker on Shaun Murphy

:20:28. > :20:33.and that caused all kinds of problems. He was looking at it for

:20:34. > :20:39.ages and sometimes you can bamboozle yourself. He chipped red and could

:20:40. > :20:47.have lost the frame. In the end it was Shaun Murphy failing to pot the

:20:48. > :20:50.brown. Again with the rest. He does not look totally comfortable out

:20:51. > :20:54.there and so many times at the Crucible we have seen the first

:20:55. > :20:59.round match, the favourite laying only in the best of 19 as opposed to

:21:00. > :21:04.the next round, best of 25. The players still feel under pressure,

:21:05. > :21:13.that best of 19 is not long enough to get your teeth into it. One

:21:14. > :21:22.observation you made a potentially looked very fast. On the first day,

:21:23. > :21:29.we have had a couple of fast bounces and it does not augur well for the

:21:30. > :21:35.coming days. You do not want fast and reactive cushions on the first

:21:36. > :21:40.day. And the players in the coming days will be interested to hear that

:21:41. > :21:45.and they might make adjustments accordingly. It could happen. It is

:21:46. > :21:50.day one, tomorrow could be a different day where the cushions are

:21:51. > :21:58.concerned. But we have had a couple of fingers. Observations general

:21:59. > :22:04.about Anthony McGill? I think he is doing his job. He has not had the

:22:05. > :22:08.best seasons in shorter frame matches but he seems to get his

:22:09. > :22:11.teeth into the longer frame matches. He looks comfortable enough out

:22:12. > :22:18.there to cause problems for Shaun Murphy. He is ahead. On the other

:22:19. > :22:23.table Alan McManus took the fifth frame with the best break of the

:22:24. > :22:28.match for him, 78. So it is now 3-2 to Stephen Maguire in that battle of

:22:29. > :22:36.the Glaswegians. Back we go and this is also 3-2.

:22:37. > :22:46.Shaun Murphy finds himself behind as we head into the next.

:22:47. > :22:58.That sounded like a kick. Has not cause problems. We had a few fast

:22:59. > :23:05.bounces. Did not matter, even though there was a heavy contact. These

:23:06. > :23:15.boys will finish at ten o'clock tomorrow morning. A long way to go

:23:16. > :23:22.in this session. What a fantastic shot. Look at how

:23:23. > :23:30.the white is finished. I think he might be playing the black. That was

:23:31. > :23:40.an attacking shot and he is unlucky to have finished there. All he can

:23:41. > :23:53.do is leave the fight tight on the cushion. -- the fight. It could turn

:23:54. > :23:59.out to be an all -- awkward frame. The safety is on. And that is where

:24:00. > :24:15.Shaun Murphy is going to leave the cue ball now. He's just going to

:24:16. > :24:21.drop the black. He wants to cover this red if he can. Because that

:24:22. > :24:31.would leave Anthony McGill and easy safety shot back. He has not done

:24:32. > :24:38.that. It is pretty simple for Anthony McGill, just bring the cue

:24:39. > :24:42.ball back to where it is now. There is a premium on getting the cue ball

:24:43. > :24:58.tight to the cushion in these situations.

:24:59. > :25:05.He has pretty much brought the cue ball back, an excellent shot. It

:25:06. > :25:10.looked simple but it was well played. If Shaun Murphy cannot get

:25:11. > :25:26.to the bottom of the cue ball he has got a problem.

:25:27. > :25:35.Shaun Murphy standing, looking to see if the red could go to the right

:25:36. > :25:46.middle. It could be a situation where the

:25:47. > :26:23.safety is as difficult as the pot. If he plays this shot the fight is

:26:24. > :26:29.going to bounce quite a bit. -- white He could roll to that red and

:26:30. > :26:42.cover everything but he is going to be in trouble again.

:26:43. > :26:49.Looking to see if he has got a straight red pot to the right

:26:50. > :26:57.middle. The safety is as difficult as the

:26:58. > :27:12.pot so you might as well go attacking.

:27:13. > :27:16.A fabulous pot. That is what you would call an

:27:17. > :27:21.absolute confidence booster. He was leaving Anthony McGill right in

:27:22. > :27:29.amongst the reds. Best shot of the match so far, without a doubt. And

:27:30. > :27:38.into the bargain, three two down, not playing great, every chance he

:27:39. > :27:48.missed it could be 4-2 down. That was the shot of the match so far as

:27:49. > :27:54.you said. And it might kick-start Shaun

:27:55. > :27:55.Murphy. I would not be surprised if he does not make enough to win this

:27:56. > :28:50.frame. Just playing the cue ball into an

:28:51. > :29:00.area because there's much available. You know you're guaranteed to be on

:29:01. > :29:09.a red. The black was there, it is not tied up, available into the left

:29:10. > :29:18.corner. He has got the pink in the open, blue on the spot, a great

:29:19. > :29:22.chance for Shaun Murphy. He can play for this, the red to the right

:29:23. > :30:04.middle, that would get him on the black.

:30:05. > :30:15.The black does not pot into the left corner. He has overscrewed that by

:30:16. > :30:26.quite a way. There is confirmation that the black is not available.

:30:27. > :30:39.He gave the table another dubbed the look after that shot. -- filthy. He

:30:40. > :30:46.has struggled to get pinpoint position at the moment. It does

:30:47. > :30:59.unsettle the players when conditions are acting unpredictably. You do not

:31:00. > :31:11.know how hard to hit some shop. -- shots. You cannot play a shot with

:31:12. > :31:20.the off chance, you play it the way you would normally play it. When it

:31:21. > :31:35.happens, you look silly. An unbelievable ankle that book! --

:31:36. > :31:45.angle. Nicely on the blue. Have a look at the side he got on this

:31:46. > :33:27.shot. Watch the white! An amazing amount of right-hand side.

:33:28. > :33:38.I said he might make enough to win this frame after that fantastic pot

:33:39. > :33:45.into the right centre pocket. That really was some shot. He was in all

:33:46. > :33:49.sorts of trouble. What a shot he pulled out! I thought it would give

:33:50. > :33:54.him a confidence boost and it certainly has.

:33:55. > :34:10.Have a look at this! Stephen said he might as well have a go but what a

:34:11. > :35:10.poll that was! -- a pot. Trying to take the red of the side

:35:11. > :35:15.cushion to give himself the chance of a century. He has missed the red.

:35:16. > :35:33.It does not really matter. No century but that read into the

:35:34. > :35:39.right middle pocket was some shot. He went on to make enough. With that

:35:40. > :35:49.break of 77, he draws level at three frames all. He does. There could be

:35:50. > :35:57.an early call even on the first afternoon. There will be shots

:35:58. > :36:02.played by great players got all types of shot. I think that shot by

:36:03. > :36:07.Shaun Murphy should wind shot of the championship. He is in all sorts of

:36:08. > :36:16.trouble and he proves the best form of defence is attack. That is an

:36:17. > :36:22.absolute screamer! If I had been sitting in my chair, I would say,

:36:23. > :36:27.have a go at that! He is tight on the cushion, half a pocket, even

:36:28. > :36:35.less. He could not hit back any better. Absolutely pure and he

:36:36. > :36:42.deserved everything. Shall we put that on a loop for you? Steve will

:36:43. > :36:49.be watching that tonight on his iPad. I can assure you. Three frames

:36:50. > :36:57.to peace and Shaun Murphy looks to have sprang into life. I have had

:36:58. > :37:05.enough of this, I will try to throw the shackles off. Alan McManus looks

:37:06. > :37:11.like he might be on the verge of winning the seventh to take a 4-3

:37:12. > :37:19.lead. I might be jumping the gun but back to this one. I would love to

:37:20. > :37:22.see that. Steve Davis in bed watching Shaun Murphy pot read into

:37:23. > :37:34.the middle pocket. -- red. That would be interesting.

:37:35. > :37:52.Not a bad break off. Having said that, Sean will knock

:37:53. > :37:57.this in and clear up. I could not see enough to take the pot on but he

:37:58. > :38:10.would have had he been able to see enough of this red. Three frames

:38:11. > :38:15.left to play in this first session. Shaun Murphy, as the seed and

:38:16. > :38:19.favourite, will want to win. He will want to win two of them. The last

:38:20. > :38:27.thing he will want is to go into tomorrow plus Max session behind. --

:38:28. > :38:31.tomorrow's session behind. That was a lovely shot! He controlled the

:38:32. > :38:59.cannon. That was really well played. That is unforgivable, I am afraid,

:39:00. > :39:10.it really is. After putting that fantastic read to the left-centre...

:39:11. > :39:20.-- fantastic red. He might have nightmares about that red tonight.

:39:21. > :39:30.I keep saying, in snooker, no matter how easy the shot is, you need full

:39:31. > :39:38.concentration. It is amazing what can be missed when you lose that

:39:39. > :39:42.little bit of concentration. He was not even thinking about the red, he

:39:43. > :39:45.was thinking about how to get the position. It was an amazing miss

:39:46. > :40:30.from him. Shaun Murphy accidentally cannoned

:40:31. > :40:52.into that and knocked it safe. Does he have enough angle? He has

:40:53. > :41:02.enough angle. It looks as if he has and it will go straight onto the

:41:03. > :41:14.red. We will show you the cannon again. That error from Anthony could

:41:15. > :41:18.cost him. That's black, the way that Shaun Murphy played it, maybe three

:41:19. > :41:21.or four players in the game have the cube power to do that, to generate

:41:22. > :41:30.the speed. -- DQ power. Fantastic to have that power in your

:41:31. > :41:36.armoury. It makes break-building so much

:41:37. > :42:04.easier. All of a sudden, you can tell by the

:42:05. > :42:09.body language of Shaun Murphy, how confident he is feeling. It is all

:42:10. > :42:15.down to that last frame and the magnificent red. It has given him a

:42:16. > :44:02.real confidence boost. He looks to be in control now.

:44:03. > :44:14.It looks as if this bad miss took his eye off the frame. It will cost

:44:15. > :44:45.him. He needs the pink and one more red.

:44:46. > :45:13.The frame will be in the bag. You need to read signs in matches.

:45:14. > :45:24.After that fantastic last frame and anti Niemi Gill missing -- Anthony

:45:25. > :45:40.McGill missing that read, it is about knowing how to put the hammer

:45:41. > :45:48.down stop -- that red. Another long hard stare at the cushion by Shaun

:45:49. > :45:51.Murphy. The Green would be enough to lead Anthony leaving Jason --

:45:52. > :47:04.needing a snooker. Shaun Murphy has made 379 centuries

:47:05. > :47:12.in his illustrious career. He is just on 23 this season. Just the

:47:13. > :47:27.black to give him his first century. We have got a few turn up banners

:47:28. > :48:02.here. Take it off this time to try to make

:48:03. > :48:09.the clearance. I do not know if his preference is a double or a travel.

:48:10. > :48:14.I know you would prefer a double. Shaun Murphy gets himself into the

:48:15. > :49:25.lead at four frames to three. Yes, he knows his way around the

:49:26. > :49:32.Crucible, but so does Alan McManus. Having been 3-1 down to Stephen

:49:33. > :49:37.Maguire, here he is in the seventh frame on his way to a break. He has

:49:38. > :49:42.won all three frames since the interval and leave this match

:49:43. > :49:51.against his friend and playing partner, Stephen Maguire, 4-3. He is

:49:52. > :49:58.the joint oldest in this year's petition. He has responded from the

:49:59. > :50:04.deficit 3-1. McManus is in the driving seat. That is the situation.

:50:05. > :50:08.You are updated. We are just a few moments from coming off air on BBC

:50:09. > :50:13.Two. If you want to continue watching these matches they are on

:50:14. > :50:17.connected TVs, tablets, computers and mobile phones, so when we do go

:50:18. > :50:23.off air in about 15 minutes, be sure to keep going if these matches are

:50:24. > :50:32.still going, as they will be. There are nine frames set to play in the

:50:33. > :50:38.opening session. Back we go. Anthony has lost two frames in a row. He

:50:39. > :50:47.badly needs to get back on track. He did not have much chance in the last

:50:48. > :50:54.frame. 76 in the previous frame. The very easily missed red into the

:50:55. > :51:01.corner pocket cost him the last frame. He cannot afford to miss

:51:02. > :51:10.them. This was a sitter. He took his eye off the pot.

:51:11. > :51:24.That has gone wrong. Maybe drifted slightly. It was a delicate shot he

:51:25. > :51:30.was trying. As he sits down... He is just having a quick look in one of

:51:31. > :51:36.the monitors. He knows if Sean can get onto a colour, he is in with a

:51:37. > :51:41.very good early chance. -- Shaun Murphy.

:51:42. > :51:48.I think you mentioned it early on in this match, when Shaun Murphy gets a

:51:49. > :51:56.couple of frames in France when he is a fantastic front runner. -- in

:51:57. > :52:08.front. He can steam roller any player when he gets on a run.

:52:09. > :52:20.He will definitely have a 6-3 lead on his mind now, Shaun Murphy. He

:52:21. > :54:35.seems to have stepped up a gear. Did he get a heavy contact? I think

:54:36. > :54:43.he might have turned. Cut this in with the rest. -- he might have

:54:44. > :54:51.done. The red did not seem to jump but the white did slightly. Not on

:54:52. > :55:01.the black as he intended. A good recovery. I think he can put that

:55:02. > :55:18.next to the black and avoid cannon ink into the black and get nicely

:55:19. > :55:25.onto it again. -- cannoning. He looks a different player now.

:55:26. > :55:30.Sometimes, top players, in these long matches, there will be times

:55:31. > :55:35.when you go out of position. Here it is again. You can be a bit flat in a

:55:36. > :55:39.match in your concentration and sometimes you need inspiration to

:55:40. > :55:48.get you going. I think that is what has happened with Shaun Murphy.

:55:49. > :55:54.Meanwhile, he has misjudged his position. It looked as if he would

:55:55. > :56:00.clinch this frame with one visit. He will have to wait for another

:56:01. > :56:18.chance. He just went astray of that last positional shot.

:56:19. > :56:24.This was the shot that he'd played. He was straight onto the black. Not

:56:25. > :56:45.enough reverse side on it. He must still be careful in this

:56:46. > :56:51.frame. He knows if he can go 5-3 in front, he is bound to have an

:56:52. > :57:17.overnight lead. Just one more frame to be played in this session.

:57:18. > :57:27.One good long pot from Anthony and he could possibly get right back

:57:28. > :57:29.into this frame. He is 55 behind. He can compose himself and pot a good

:57:30. > :57:54.long red in. The chance is there. He is looking

:57:55. > :58:00.to see if he can leave a read. As we show you this terrific part, he has

:58:01. > :58:15.an angle to bring the five reds into play. -- terrific pot. Not quite

:58:16. > :58:20.over yet. It is over for us right now. You are on BBC Two this

:58:21. > :58:24.afternoon. You can continue watching this match and the other on the

:58:25. > :58:29.other side of the arena on your connecting devices. We will take a

:58:30. > :58:35.quick break before Jason Mohammad returns. Also that the start of this

:58:36. > :58:40.evening's session with Stuart Bingham 4-5 down to Ali Carter.

:58:41. > :58:42.Thank you for your company on this opening day. We will catch you again

:58:43. > :58:44.soon.
