:00:09. > :00:49.Hello again. Today's classic Crucible match told us a lot indeed.
:00:50. > :00:57.It is the second round from 1988. It is Jimmy White against Stephen
:00:58. > :01:05.Hendry. Two years earlier his ambitions were fuelled by a run to
:01:06. > :01:13.the quarter-finals. Jimmy White was already in a Crucible final.
:01:14. > :01:16.However, he lost. This is the first time that these two champions
:01:17. > :01:21.squared off against each other. When Stephen Hendry appeared on the scene
:01:22. > :01:25.couple of years ago. He started winning tournaments. Played in the
:01:26. > :01:36.first match. He is one of my favourite players.
:01:37. > :01:48.It was one of the first battle is of many to come. -- battles Hendry
:01:49. > :02:09.appeared overwhelmed and nervous at the start. Stephen Hendry has had
:02:10. > :02:44.the opportunity and he has given it act. -- back. Well, that is very
:02:45. > :02:52.surprising. Stephen Hendry was for frames behind. However, he does have
:02:53. > :04:01.a 20 seven frame advantage here. -- 27 frame.
:04:02. > :04:24.Well, that could have worked out better. He doesn't want him on
:04:25. > :04:30.either side of the pocket. It is 27 all and Jimmy White is in a
:04:31. > :06:18.perfect position. 28. 24 points in front. He needs both
:06:19. > :06:22.remaining to be read. -- red. He now needs a good positional spot for the
:06:23. > :06:38.last red. Again, Stephen Hendry has another
:06:39. > :06:55.chance. And, obviously he cannot see the red
:06:56. > :07:01.as he would like. However, he is trying a swerve. That was brilliant!
:07:02. > :07:37.Look at that. Now, that is a pity. He will have to
:07:38. > :07:45.pull something out of the bag. How vital as this one. -- how vital is
:07:46. > :09:05.this one? Quiet. It is good to see. Some would call that the luck of the
:09:06. > :09:32.green. But, what a time to get it? It was the green that was needed.
:09:33. > :09:40.Well, that was quite unlucky. But from the angle of this pocket it
:09:41. > :10:21.could have been a snooker. Yes, John and the green goes. And, it is gone.
:10:22. > :10:28.Well, it is so easy. What came next was seemingly quite comfortable for
:10:29. > :10:32.his age. However, then Stephen Hendry was giving nothing away in
:10:33. > :10:33.facial expressions which was compounded by him giving nothing
:10:34. > :11:30.away at the table either. Well, I don't know if he can take
:11:31. > :11:57.this long one and hold on to the black.
:11:58. > :12:15.He will have to go for aid old -- a bold colour it appears. Especially,
:12:16. > :12:23.if he wants to go and get that black.
:12:24. > :13:30.Well, Stephen Hendry kept the pack as tight as possible. Now, it is his
:13:31. > :15:22.turn. That was brilliant. That was a nice little kids on the
:15:23. > :15:35.blue. He now needs to go around the table. -- nice little kids. No, I
:15:36. > :15:51.don't think so. Nice, little one there. -- nice little kiss on the
:15:52. > :16:18.blue. No, I don't think so. He is 43 points behind, but there is
:16:19. > :16:21.still a possible 51 left on the table. He cannot afford to lose a
:16:22. > :18:42.single red. What a cracking shot that was. It
:18:43. > :18:48.had a lot of side on it. It was just off the brown.
:18:49. > :19:23.Well, what a great frame. From 11 it went ahead for Stephen Hendry and
:19:24. > :19:27.Jimmy White only potted one red. Look what happened in this frame. Oh
:19:28. > :21:01.dear! Well again, Stephen Hendry is
:21:02. > :21:08.confronted with a very long pot. And, just look at the shot he has
:21:09. > :21:09.played. It was nicely on the blue. He will be able to fetch the cue
:21:10. > :21:41.ball back. That gives Stephen Hendry a chance
:21:42. > :22:03.to utilise the black ball again. My word, he really had some stuff on
:22:04. > :23:06.that. 31. Stephen Hendry is completely
:23:07. > :23:11.engrossed in what he is doing now. This is the ideal thing to be doing.
:23:12. > :23:17.The thing to do is to try and forget your opponent. Completely. That is
:23:18. > :24:05.what he is doing. That is it. Jimmy White needs
:24:06. > :24:20.sneakers again. -- snookers. What impressive stuff this is? Stephen
:24:21. > :24:29.Hendry's has said to me how he cannot believe the way this young
:24:30. > :24:50.man plays and practices. And my word, it really is terrific stuff.
:24:51. > :25:25.Well, I thought the opening frames were quick with six minutes apiece.
:25:26. > :25:38.But this one has proven to be much quicker.
:25:39. > :26:29.Now, let us hope he can get the black on. What a wonderful
:26:30. > :26:35.clearance! What a wonderful clearance! For the rest of it, you
:26:36. > :26:50.have to look very hard for Jimmy White. He only potted for balls. --
:26:51. > :26:55.four. In then next action it was a time that Jimmy White never enjoyed.
:26:56. > :27:02.This was a frame that Jimmy White should have really wrapped up. Look
:27:03. > :27:35.how lucky he is being. He has missed.
:27:36. > :28:07.Well, that was amazing. It was certain to go into the green. He
:28:08. > :28:15.doesn't want to two much bent on this. And yes, he has got to two
:28:16. > :28:22.much. That has put him in trouble. Well, that means that Stephen Hendry
:28:23. > :28:57.can only draw from 24 points with 25 points left still on the table.
:28:58. > :29:41.Well, what a magnificent shot. And that green is very much in the open.
:29:42. > :29:57.Well, Jimmy White has declared himself there. Begin ceased even
:29:58. > :30:04.sitting down. -- we can see Stephen Hendry sitting down. That has been
:30:05. > :30:09.tremendous. Such as task situation. Nobody could see it but Jimmy White.
:30:10. > :30:42.-- tough situation. And so Stephen Hendry is requiring
:30:43. > :31:05.both balls now. What a seesaw that has been. This is not nice. That was
:31:06. > :31:08.certainly a tough shot. So now, it is down to Jimmy White. My word, you
:31:09. > :31:46.cannot get any closer than this. APPLAUSE. So a tremendous struggle
:31:47. > :33:02.in this first frame of the morning session.
:33:03. > :33:55.One, Jimmy White. Fully engrossed in this, as we all are.
:33:56. > :34:44.One, Jimmy White. APPLAUSE. One.
:34:45. > :35:59.One, Stephen Hendry. Not quite found his touch yet. Jimmy must punish him
:36:00. > :36:01.for those mistakes. He knows he should have won the first frame,
:36:02. > :36:27.cannot afford to lose this one. Seven. Eight. Well, he took a
:36:28. > :36:31.chance, mainly because there was a red in the area full of not an ideal
:36:32. > :36:40.position. He's very much aware of the
:36:41. > :37:29.importance of winning this one. 20. 38 points in front. After this, he
:37:30. > :39:12.needs just one more red. This 440 points. 23 left on the
:39:13. > :39:29.table but it should not matter now. 55. 56.
:39:30. > :39:58.Frame conceded. Stephen Hendry deciding to have a pot but then
:39:59. > :40:34.concedes immediately and the frame score 10-8.
:40:35. > :40:51.One, Stephen Hendry. Well played, that really stuck on the black.
:40:52. > :41:55.APPLAUSE. Well, that was... I do not think
:41:56. > :42:01.that was the right shot to play. Try to be positive with his safety but I
:42:02. > :42:03.think a negative one would have done just as well and he has left this
:42:04. > :42:57.for Stephen. One. Steven not happy with the contact on
:42:58. > :43:05.that one, for sure. I think Ebi skewed, Jack, for sure. -- he
:43:06. > :43:36.miscued. Nine. The referees realised that he is not
:43:37. > :44:06.as young as he was. He has had to work so hard. Nine, Stephen Hendry.
:44:07. > :44:54.Going for this. He will be opening the reds up. Interesting to look for
:44:55. > :45:22.position. 15. It is going to be very difficult to
:45:23. > :45:30.play safe. That is the problem with this type of game, opening the reds,
:45:31. > :45:42.if you make a mistake, it's their for your opponent. -- they are there
:45:43. > :45:50.will stop in fact, John, I think he has been rather fortunate there.
:45:51. > :45:54.Yes, Jack, I think that is about the safest spot on the table. A little
:45:55. > :46:47.bit of luck for Jimmy. Jimmy certainly not finding the
:46:48. > :46:53.bottom cushion as he would have liked but nothing easy here and the
:46:54. > :47:02.sort of situation that could lead to trouble.
:47:03. > :47:17.And I think it has. APPLAUSE .. One.
:47:18. > :48:57.APPLAUSE. That was a good shot. Of the two
:48:58. > :49:03.players, Jimmy certainly looks the stronger this morning. He should
:49:04. > :49:05.have won the first and really getting the cue through nice and
:49:06. > :49:22.smooth. 31 points in front and the reds
:49:23. > :49:27.still nicely spaced but it he keeps going out of position slightly.
:49:28. > :50:06.APPLAUSE .. 31. So now just a red and a colour
:50:07. > :50:31.required. A red and colour will put him well safe. 38.
:50:32. > :51:06.APPLAUSE. Would have left his heart just a little and Stephen Hendry
:51:07. > :51:14.knives and Jimmy White wins a very excellent frame to put it back 10-9.
:51:15. > :51:20.He is hanging on to his coattails the whole match and a new now and
:51:21. > :51:21.then we had a title on how hands because Stephen Hendry is just a
:51:22. > :54:08.fantastic potter. APPLAUSE. One. One, Jimmy White.
:54:09. > :55:01.APPLAUSE. (CROWD GROANS). APPLAUSE
:55:02. > :55:39.One, Stephen Hendry. And Stephen Rather than letting the muscles come
:55:40. > :55:57.into the action, which is not good to see. One.
:55:58. > :56:58.Well, there is no doubt he is feeling the pressure at the moment.
:56:59. > :57:00.Just having a bad patch. Needs to hold himself together.
:57:01. > :57:19.APPLAUSE. He is on that red but he has overrun
:57:20. > :58:03.it. 13. But the black is out clear. Has he
:58:04. > :58:14.got the right angle on the blue. 27 points in front, now.
:58:15. > :58:31.18. APPLAUSE. 19.
:58:32. > :58:50.If Jimmy can go into the interval, 10-10, I shall he will be
:58:51. > :58:57.delighted. -- I am sure. And surprisingly, in fact it is almost
:58:58. > :59:04.amazing, Stephen Hendry, this morning his highest break is 24 so
:59:05. > :59:10.quite a slump from yesterday. Just one red required after this blue and
:59:11. > :59:16.that looks perfect so it looks like 10-10 and what character Jimmy has
:59:17. > :59:19.shown this morning, particularly after losing the first frame as he
:59:20. > :59:52.did. So quite a good session for Jimmy.
:59:53. > :00:00.He would be delighted and... What our last five frames we are going to
:00:01. > :00:10.have. APPLAUSE. And that is, in fact, the
:00:11. > :00:25.biggest break of the match so far for Jimmy.
:00:26. > :00:57.69. Well, bad luck, missing the pink but no matter...
:00:58. > :01:06.APPLAUSE. LAUGHTER Deary me. Well, how do you follow that! What is the
:01:07. > :01:15.going to do with the Swans? So, at the interval, it is 10- ten. Five to
:01:16. > :01:23.go and what a session that will be. STUDIO: Nothing to choose between
:01:24. > :01:28.these exciting talents. Always on the professional, Stephen Hendry
:01:29. > :02:09.spent the interval on the practice table.
:02:10. > :02:24.Stephen Hendry is first off the mark, and he will be trained to read
:02:25. > :02:34.store what he thinks is the balance. -- restore. Six.
:02:35. > :03:07.Amazing how he does not worry about long pots, at all.
:03:08. > :04:18.11. That last shot really cleared the path, it is a fine chance for
:04:19. > :04:47.Jimmy. 19. 20. He just slid that in all the jaw of
:04:48. > :05:48.the centre pocket. 35. Just flicking one red out, he will
:05:49. > :06:25.be happy with that. 54. 55. Just one more red colour
:06:26. > :06:46.required after this black Mac. 54. 55. Just one more red colour
:06:47. > :07:59.required after this black. Do not think Stephen will be hoping
:08:00. > :08:03.to win this frame, but he will be taking the opportunity to get some
:08:04. > :08:16.practice in. He has not been able to get involved. Yes John, I think that
:08:17. > :08:21.is what may well put Stephen to the test. He took some of the bout the
:08:22. > :08:31.pressure, but this is tremendous for a young man such as Stephen Hendry.
:08:32. > :08:53.Jimmy is certainly marching on now. Jimmy White takes that frame to
:08:54. > :10:05.lead by 11-10. That is fairly accurate, but
:10:06. > :10:14.unfortunately bouncing the cue ball Intern bounced to the object ball.
:10:15. > :10:56.Jimmy looks to the sky, that was not very good.
:10:57. > :11:11.Eight, Jimmy White. That was in that -- a terribly important shortfall
:11:12. > :11:14.Jimmy White. If it got position, there would have been five reds
:11:15. > :11:57.waiting for the black. APPLAUSE. Nice and gently. APPLAUSE. Eight.
:11:58. > :12:42.Nine. He lost the run of the white there.
:12:43. > :14:14.16. 17. 23. 37. Pickup shot, but a little
:14:15. > :14:22.unfortunate to be so close to the cushion. He does take it in stride,
:14:23. > :14:43.as a rule. That should lead a red into the centre pocket. Is 42 points
:14:44. > :14:44.in front, the way the reds are situated it looks like you have the
:14:45. > :15:00.more. situated it looks like he will have
:15:01. > :15:15.them all. Trigger form, Stephen has put
:15:16. > :15:20.himself together and he has his head down.
:15:21. > :15:23.True to form, Stephen has put himself together and he has his head
:15:24. > :17:20.This shows you the strength of Stephen, now he has a good chance to
:17:21. > :17:28.make a 100 break. 97. APPLAUSE. And magnificent effort, and so
:17:29. > :17:32.controlled after so much pressure. I am sorry to see him do that, a
:17:33. > :17:34.marvellous break they buy it Stephen Hendry to take this, this match to
:17:35. > :18:09.11-11. APPLAUSE. He is playing for the red just above
:18:10. > :18:45.the black, to clear the black. Whoever loses this frame carries the
:18:46. > :20:01.most pressure. 20. APPLAUSE. 21. 36. That was an instance where Jimmy
:20:02. > :20:26.White could have test on, but he wants to top everything. Tremendous
:20:27. > :20:38.stuff. 41. Might not just have the angle to come through on the black.
:20:39. > :21:01.42. Coming down for the blue, but just the wrong side. He will have to
:21:02. > :21:16.leave himself another long red. 47. 48.
:21:17. > :21:52.He has not played that too well. He wanted to be at least another six
:21:53. > :22:17.inches further up the table. APPLAUSE. That puts in front by 64
:22:18. > :22:25.points, there another possible 67 points on the table. Discretion is
:22:26. > :22:30.the better part of valour, and rightly so. No legs, and he is left
:22:31. > :22:36.on. rightly so. No legs, and he has left
:22:37. > :22:46.one. Jimmy White is now in a position
:22:47. > :22:53.where Stephen Hendry needs snooker 's. He will want to reply after the
:22:54. > :23:15.tremendous century break from Stephen Hendry.
:23:16. > :23:34.13. What tremendous panache this fellow has. He really is a joy to
:23:35. > :23:49.watch. In the economy of his play is something quite special.
:23:50. > :24:07.29. The frame is over. Surely it Stephen Hendry will remain seated,
:24:08. > :24:20.and he does. Jimmy White makes it 12- 11.
:24:21. > :24:48.Stephen Hendry was rather nervously thick on that contact, and if ever
:24:49. > :25:03.Jimmy White wanted to win a frame, it will be this one.
:25:04. > :25:24.This is one that Stephen Hendry will have a go at, he is coming back into
:25:25. > :25:27.the danger area in doing so. He will have to play the brunt into the
:25:28. > :25:30.centre, he could not play the yellow. The brown is the only bullet
:25:31. > :26:35.will get him up amongst the red. Six, Stephen Hendry. APPLAUSE. It is
:26:36. > :26:47.fraught with danger, this pot is on the red. He may collide with
:26:48. > :27:23.something, he has to get it. That little nudge there by the red, what
:27:24. > :27:29.a gift. APPLAUSE. One. Jimmy White. APPLAUSE. That was really a pressure
:27:30. > :28:38.ball. APPLAUSE. That is a good shot. That
:28:39. > :28:40.is some bad luck, he really wanted to kiss on the left-hand side of
:28:41. > :29:32.that very gently. Seven. Already into the centre, it
:29:33. > :30:02.looks like the angle he will have to come down onto the black. Eight.
:30:03. > :30:11.APPLAUSE. 15. Every point is really punishment now for Stephen Hendry.
:30:12. > :31:58.23. 24. APPLAUSE. 43. Would you believe
:31:59. > :32:03.that, it is on the tip of my tongue thou to say that the writing was on
:32:04. > :32:06.the wall, and Jimmy White makes a mistake. But this is a very
:32:07. > :32:56.difficult opportunity. APPLAUSE. It looks like Jimmy White
:32:57. > :32:59.has got a way with that, we do not see him miss many shots like the
:33:00. > :33:28.rest. That has been fortunate. Jimmy White is inclined to be having
:33:29. > :34:33.a thrash. Suddenly it is deathly silent. 16.
:34:34. > :34:49.17. Stephen Hendry has underhit that slightly. APPLAUSE. He takes a look
:34:50. > :34:55.at the scoreboard, he is 19 the height. -- behind. Beautifully
:34:56. > :35:35.played. APPLAUSE. 32. 33. APPLAUSE. The only
:35:36. > :35:55.problem now is to get to the blue. 41. This could be the important one,
:35:56. > :36:11.he must get onto the brown. A little bit close for comfort. What a
:36:12. > :36:24.cracking shot. A big sigh and a puff from Stephen Hendry.
:36:25. > :36:30.Now, where is the blue going? Stephen Hendry is now just five
:36:31. > :37:08.points in front. If you can pot the blue, he must be
:37:09. > :37:20.on the pink. APPLAUSE. Of the. -- oh dear. What about that! On rushed
:37:21. > :37:26.shot against the critical Stephen Hendry, could prove a little at a
:37:27. > :38:06.cost of the match for Jimmy White. Let's find out what happened next.
:38:07. > :38:19.Jimmy is determined to get the cue ball back to safety, and he has not
:38:20. > :38:44.made a bad effort at that. This 25th frame is a real shoot out.
:38:45. > :39:42.Jimmy White is having a look, and decides it is not want Stephen
:39:43. > :39:48.Hendry to hit it to the left-hand side of the cluster. This could be a
:39:49. > :40:09.good safety. It should have been, but it is not.
:40:10. > :40:18.APPLAUSE. Stephen Hendry is anxiously looking to see if he left
:40:19. > :40:42.that the red, but apparently not. Again, Stephen Hendry is up very
:40:43. > :40:45.quickly they are at a very fortunate indeed. That was a bad shot, but he
:40:46. > :41:20.has got away with it. Not too bad, you would be a brave
:41:21. > :41:25.man to take on this red. APPLAUSE. A great shot. If he can get out of the
:41:26. > :41:42.corner. Seven. And angle on the black to go
:41:43. > :43:50.into the cluster. APPLAUSE. And that is absolutely
:43:51. > :44:07.colossal, can he capitalise on this blue?
:44:08. > :45:00.Six. APPLAUSE. 21. APPLAUSE. Jimmy White is forging ahead now, a nice
:45:01. > :45:01.chance here. 27. I would not choose to play that, but nicely on the
:45:02. > :45:50.blue. 32. 33. Things are looking maybe ominously
:45:51. > :46:06.here. And he sits and thinks and hopes. APPLAUSE. These two men have
:46:07. > :46:13.tried to break one another for three days, and neither have succeeded.
:46:14. > :46:40.Whomever wins. APPLAUSE. That looks perfect. 54.
:46:41. > :46:41.55. After this black, just one more red required for a remarkable
:46:42. > :47:09.victory. APPLAUSE. APPLAUSE. The Jimmy White supporters
:47:10. > :47:15.give him a clap. And that black surely?
:47:16. > :47:36.APPLAUSE. 71. There is disappointment, but he is young and
:47:37. > :47:43.he is marvellous. 78. APPLAUSE. Sir Jimmy proves the point by making his
:47:44. > :47:50.largest break so far. On must say, what they wonderful display he has
:47:51. > :47:56.put on. Earswick stood, this pressure -- he has with stood the
