:00:09. > :00:48.Hello again. The 1986 Crucible final had a lot to live up to. 12 months

:00:49. > :00:54.earlier, 18 and a half million people were glued to their TV sets,

:00:55. > :00:59.watching the drama served up by Steve Davis and Dennis Taylor. 1

:01:00. > :01:05.year on, Steve Davis was back, in another final, and if he was widely

:01:06. > :01:14.expected to beat Dennis Taylor and famously didn't, he was expected to

:01:15. > :01:23.crush Bradford's Joe Johnson. They was the 150' to-1 outer. The whole

:01:24. > :01:29.of Yorkshire was entranced by his progress and so was very neutral in

:01:30. > :01:33.the country. Everyone was dream a fairy tale sporting finale. I

:01:34. > :01:34.remember thinking, should I touch this trophy now? Because

:01:35. > :01:38.remember thinking, should I touch this trophy now? Because I may not

:01:39. > :01:43.get another chance. Obviously, he was going to win. I will just have a

:01:44. > :01:48.little touch. I approached the final against Steve Davis, thinking to

:01:49. > :01:53.myself, what a great player he is. He lost in the final of the year

:01:54. > :01:58.previously, with the famous black ball, and I thought, he is going to

:01:59. > :02:03.set his stall out to beat me. And I tried to put him out of my mind

:02:04. > :02:08.completely. I was playing the balls rather than Steve Davis. If you

:02:09. > :02:13.start thinking you're playing the best player ever which he was at

:02:14. > :02:19.that time, you're halfway beaten before you start. Coming into the 86

:02:20. > :02:27.world championship, I had weathered the tomorrow, won events during the

:02:28. > :02:35.season, got my Lib equilibrium back, and was relishing the chance of

:02:36. > :02:37.regaining my title. I got into the final, against another huge

:02:38. > :02:42.underdog, Joe Johnson decided to play the match and tournament of his

:02:43. > :02:45.life. Just shy of his 29th birthday, Steve Davis took the opening frame

:02:46. > :03:05.and in the second, he is 14 points adrift.

:03:06. > :03:52.Well, that kiss as it turns out, couldn't have been better.

:03:53. > :04:00.Well, it is does seem the only plb here can be the blue -- the only

:04:01. > :04:01.problem here can be the blue. He looks to epretty straight on the

:04:02. > :04:25.brown. That brings Steve level on the

:04:26. > :04:26.scores. So this obviously the key shot. Just requiring now blue and

:04:27. > :04:44.pink. So, a sigh of relief by Joe and he's

:04:45. > :05:16.got a chance here. APPLAUSE

:05:17. > :05:18.So, this frame taken twice as long as the first one. So Joe is putting

:05:19. > :05:23.up the night. Well done, Joe!

:05:24. > :07:13.APPLAUSE Slight slit more difficult, having

:07:14. > :07:14.to use the cue extension, and because of that reason, he is not

:07:15. > :07:28.ideally placed on the black. Pot is quite easy, but he'll need to

:07:29. > :07:30.develop one or two reds in order to keep the break going. Or go for the

:07:31. > :07:59.single red in baulk. He is looking very closely at the

:08:00. > :08:01.possibility of a 3-ball plant, just directly behind the pink. 4-ball,

:08:02. > :08:05.possibly. Nicely controlled as well. He is

:08:06. > :11:57.sitting on the pink here. 43. He has accumulated 43 points so

:11:58. > :12:02.far, and the break hasn't been easy because of the situation of the

:12:03. > :12:27.balls, the next couple of shots, we should see it develop.

:12:28. > :12:37.And that's a nice little kiss on the blue.

:12:38. > :12:45.And Steve certainly sill looking fresh after that tremendous match

:12:46. > :12:51.he's had. I wonder if perhaps little later, Willie Thorne may be able to

:12:52. > :13:04.enlarge on that, whether he should be tired after such a tough match.

:13:05. > :13:36.Well, useful kiss to leave him on the brown, still got to break into

:13:37. > :13:40.the reds to maintain the break. Ask he couldn't have played it any

:13:41. > :14:28.better. 67. Steve now safe. And quite a nice

:14:29. > :14:39.possibility of a nice sized break here.

:14:40. > :16:06.Naict. I it will interesting to see how he handles the glean. The rest

:16:07. > :16:12.of the colours on their spots. More or less.

:16:13. > :16:16.APPLAUSE And there he tried to give it's a

:16:17. > :16:48.little pick. APPLAUSE

:16:49. > :16:52.Oh, what a beauty! And that must make him feel pleased. But he's got

:16:53. > :17:11.to get another one. APPLAUSE

:17:12. > :17:17.So, even applause from Joe there for a lovely 100 break.

:17:18. > :17:24.Well, he can obviously see a problem there, I would suggest it's the fact

:17:25. > :17:26.he is not straight on the plaque makes it very difficult when it's so

:17:27. > :19:06.tight. Well, Steve has intentionally potted

:19:07. > :19:15.that red, because it clears the black into the right-hand corner

:19:16. > :19:35.pocket. But finishing as straight as he has on the black...

:19:36. > :19:40.I was about to say he was limited in the shot he could play. But possibly

:19:41. > :19:50.now has the same problem. 16.

:19:51. > :21:16.APPLAUSE Well, he's certainly on the pink,

:21:17. > :21:33.but he cut that one a little bit fine.

:21:34. > :22:22.36. Not quite as he intended. He was looking for a thicker contact on the

:22:23. > :22:31.red, no too far away from the cue ball, now a different choice of red.

:22:32. > :22:40.And this really is a beautiful break that Steve is making. He is using

:22:41. > :23:42.very few cannons and pinpointing the cue ball.

:23:43. > :23:47.Back in position. Now requiring the black or one of the 3 remaining reds

:23:48. > :24:56.to secure the frame. Skaix 6667. Again, a very clean

:24:57. > :24:58.tiedsy break. Colours virtually on their spots again. This could be a

:24:59. > :25:17.formality. And this really is a classic break

:25:18. > :25:21.from Steve Davis. He's playing so well now, that he's put in the

:25:22. > :25:22.absolute minimum of effort into the stroke, but getting the maximum from

:25:23. > :26:02.it. 89. 94.

:26:03. > :26:13.APPLAUSE So there's the hundred. And a lovely

:26:14. > :26:18.break. So Steve Davis leads by 3 frames to one at the interval. Steve

:26:19. > :26:26.Davis had this habit of really punishing people. I remember the

:26:27. > :26:31.year before, he was 8-nil up. And he had beaten Mike Hallett 9-0 in one

:26:32. > :26:36.of the big tournaments as well. I thought to myself, every time you

:26:37. > :26:41.get a chance, try and make sure you win the frame, you know? Don't give

:26:42. > :27:19.up frames, if you like. Don't take them too lightly. Stay with him.

:27:20. > :27:26.One of the problems for Joe, he is not certain where the pink is going

:27:27. > :27:29.to go after he is potted it. Whether the red in the open there would be

:27:30. > :28:36.covered by by the pink. Well, just a couple more reds to

:28:37. > :28:37.make this frame safe. And a good performance considering what

:28:38. > :29:11.happened in the last two frames. So that red means that Davis needs a

:29:12. > :29:35.snooker. And because he couldn't get his body

:29:36. > :29:37.right down to play his last shot, Johnson didn't get his positional

:29:38. > :29:38.play as accurate as he might have done.

:29:39. > :30:02.APPLAUSE Nevertheless, all is well and he can

:30:03. > :30:06.congratulate himself on coming back so strongly after the mid-session

:30:07. > :30:07.interval,ing a having 2 century breaks put on him in the two

:30:08. > :30:21.previous frames. APPLAUSE

:30:22. > :30:51.Davis concedes. And Johnson narrows the gap to one frame.

:30:52. > :30:54., he can obviously get through to this red, and now a good chance for

:30:55. > :31:14.Joe. Just having a look after potting the

:31:15. > :31:26.pink into had red centre, whether he can stay on that red.

:31:27. > :31:32.Now gone six points in front, and the only difficult ball it appears

:31:33. > :32:06.to me could possibly be the green. Now this is the important shot - 12

:32:07. > :32:10.points in front. Once have you a green and grown, and Joe having a

:32:11. > :32:13.look at where he's got to screw back off the yellow. If the green was on

:32:14. > :33:40.the spot, it would be quite simple. So, Davis scored four, but he only

:33:41. > :33:43.added one more red as Johnson played some very tight, competitive match

:33:44. > :33:50.snooker to win the frame and level the match at 3-all. 12 months

:33:51. > :33:55.earlier, Davis had famously gone 8-0 in front against Dennis Taylor ask

:33:56. > :33:59.still lost. But this time, Joe Johnson was determined to stick with

:34:00. > :34:07.him a lot more closely in the early stages. But suddenly after breaks,

:34:08. > :34:13.he found it was clear blue water in front of them. But even then, the

:34:14. > :34:20.Nugget was not taking anything for granted. The only shot I remember of

:34:21. > :34:25.the final was Joe potting a ball down the rail, all the way down into

:34:26. > :34:29.the green pocket, and taking on shots with breathtaking ease. He

:34:30. > :35:16.didn't have a care in the world - such a great cueist. Great shot.

:35:17. > :35:25.Ties time, Joe -- this time, Joe is taking the half bass. Earlier, he

:35:26. > :36:37.used his own telescopic cue, not terribly successful with.

:36:38. > :36:46.Joe keeps looking at that red at the back of the pack.

:36:47. > :36:54.And he looks to have the perfect position on it.

:36:55. > :37:27.They have broken beautifully for him! Every chance now of pulling his

:37:28. > :38:24.frame out of the bag. Now looks to stun off the red into

:38:25. > :38:40.the pink for the right-hand coverage pocket. Corner pocket.

:38:41. > :38:51.Is a terrific player and great temper. For a match player. Probably

:38:52. > :38:54.his greatest attribute coming into the world championship, his cool,

:38:55. > :39:04.calm and collected manner at the table.

:39:05. > :39:12.So already 32 points in point. If he could get 2 pinks, that could be

:39:13. > :39:28.sufficient to leave Steve needing snookers.

:39:29. > :39:43.He may have to get down for the blue off this red.

:39:44. > :40:34.66. APPLAUSE

:40:35. > :40:55.72, Johnson has a break. Well, Joe Johnson has mate 3 centuries in the

:40:56. > :41:01.championship, but that's the highest break in the final, a break of 72.

:41:02. > :41:04.He now trails by just 2 frames. The support of the people absolutely

:41:05. > :41:11.certainly helped my, without a doubt. They were fantastic. Every

:41:12. > :41:13.time I got a good shot, I could hear the thunder russ applause. Fantastic

:41:14. > :41:21.to have that kind of support. Take it quite naturally. Difficult

:41:22. > :42:25.red, along the top. Yes, a lot more difficult shot than

:42:26. > :42:31.it looked. Knew he would be leaving Steve if he missed it. But now given

:42:32. > :43:14.himself an excellent chance in this frame. Already 20 points in front.

:43:15. > :43:24.He was 3 times Yorkshire amateur champion and turned professional in

:43:25. > :43:25.1979. It has taken him 7 years to get to this stage, the stage of the

:43:26. > :43:51.world championship final. APPLAUSE

:43:52. > :43:58.And this is the last of the easy reds. And of course, it's not enough

:43:59. > :44:04.for Joe to win the frame. So he's looking now, I think, to go down

:44:05. > :44:10.near in baulk cushion off this red, so he has an angle when potting the

:44:11. > :44:23.green to come down and split the 3 reds.

:44:24. > :44:41.So now, 39 points in front. Just need the red and one more colour to

:44:42. > :45:19.leave Steve needing snookers again. And Joe, just checking the board.

:45:20. > :45:29.And just note the position a little bit there. Just checking he is 40 in

:45:30. > :45:30.front, he needs at least the green. I think we may see him play a

:45:31. > :46:30.snooker here. APPLAUSE

:46:31. > :46:37.. John, had a brave shot that was! Yes, that's a great shot. Puts him

:46:38. > :46:53.43 in front now. Knew he was leaving the red and he missed

:46:54. > :47:03.32, Joe Johnson. That knock of 32 was enough to bring Johnson within

:47:04. > :47:06.one frame of his decorated opponent. He has a slight advantage in the

:47:07. > :47:21.next But Steve is eyeing up a red here.

:47:22. > :48:09.In next red could win him this frame.

:48:10. > :48:18.7, Steve Davis. This is hard to believe... He missed the same shot

:48:19. > :48:21.now into that pocket, identical, I would say, 3 times.

:48:22. > :48:37.So now got to be an excellent opportunity for Joe. Unfortunately

:48:38. > :48:41.for Joe, I think the green is covering the brown spot. So should

:48:42. > :48:45.he pot the brown, of course, he would come back down to the black

:48:46. > :48:51.spot, so Joe electing the take the green instead.

:48:52. > :49:10.And he's over his problems. Just a little bit care now. And the match

:49:11. > :49:27.is all square. The brown and blue now to put this

:49:28. > :49:44.frame safe. APPLAUSE

:49:45. > :49:45.And Steve must be wondering how he lost this frame with the chances

:49:46. > :50:10.he's had. Well, this frame has been going to

:50:11. > :50:32.and fro throughout. Finally, Johnson takes it. And makes

:50:33. > :50:36.the match all square at 7 frames each.

:50:37. > :50:57.And Joe Johnson is away straightaway.

:50:58. > :51:03.Yes, the sight of reds that Joe's been knocking in all week. Again, a

:51:04. > :51:05.crucial shot. This red will be going into the pack.

:51:06. > :52:14.APPLAUSE 16. So now, a choice, could run down

:52:15. > :52:17.for the red into the right-hand centre pocket, or may elect to

:52:18. > :52:35.disturb these reds again, just above the black.

:52:36. > :52:38.Probably screw back for the blue here, to get away from the side

:52:39. > :53:30.cushion. Playing with complete ease. And of

:53:31. > :53:36.course, the way the reds are set, each time he pots one, it opens up

:53:37. > :53:46.the path for the another one into the opposite corner pocket.

:53:47. > :54:17.I would like to have come a little lower on the black there, to get the

:54:18. > :54:43.reds into this right-hand corner pocket.

:54:44. > :55:21.The capacity crowd appreciating every move he makes.

:55:22. > :55:58.So just one red and one more colour to leave Steve needing snookers.

:55:59. > :56:08.Could just scu the black, leave the pink in the centre off this red.

:56:09. > :56:25.Joe, just looking at the baurd - and I'm sure if it was me playing his

:56:26. > :56:26.shot, I would be screwing off the pink so I didn't play a position for

:56:27. > :56:38.the red. APPLAUSE

:56:39. > :56:46.He seems to be playing the same game as you, John. D.

:56:47. > :57:02.APPLAUSE He made a 72 in the 12th frame, his

:57:03. > :57:05.highest in the final. He has now equalled it. And about to go a

:57:06. > :57:23.little better. 77.

:57:24. > :57:35.APPLAUSE Some brilliant potting by Joe

:57:36. > :57:44.Johnson, a break of 75 and only 59 points left on the table.

:57:45. > :58:07.Said before, these are the ones that he has been knocking in all week.

:58:08. > :59:12.It was a long way off with that one. A bit wild, John.

:59:13. > :00:15.Now, 70 points in front, just wants the one red to clinch this frame.

:00:16. > :00:22.It's been some entertaining snooker in the first 16 frames of the first

:00:23. > :01:19.day's play of the world final. APPLAUSE

:01:20. > :01:28.Terrific stuff! Some great potting by both players. Superb safety.

:01:29. > :01:58.48. The last red disappears and Joe Johnson, without a point on the

:01:59. > :02:31.scoreboard. And so clinically, Steve Davis

:02:32. > :02:38.white-washing Joe Johnson in our final frame of the day, but Joe

:02:39. > :02:43.Johnson takes the honours. He has drawn level over the 16 frames of

:02:44. > :03:05.the first day's play, and they share the match, 8 frames each.

:03:06. > :03:16.APPLAUSE , they shake hands and the brilliant

:03:17. > :03:24.81, but it's all square, 8 frames each. So at 8 #23r5i78s all, this

:03:25. > :03:28.was not the lap of honour for Davis had many people had predicted. This

:03:29. > :03:48.was very tight and very delicately poised. So in frame 17 we go. E lap

:03:49. > :03:54.And a rather surprising miss by Steve there. Just a little twist of

:03:55. > :04:30.his hand as he went through with the shot.

:04:31. > :04:38.Well, Joe would want to be on this red as straight as pock possible, in

:04:39. > :04:44.order he can run through for the black.

:04:45. > :04:50.Tried to leave himself an angle in which to take one of 3 reds, into

:04:51. > :05:28.the left-hand corner pocket, he may have finished a little too straight.

:05:29. > :06:21.16, 17. Set Joe up here for every chance to take the frame.

:06:22. > :06:28.And that sounded like a kick and sure enough... Giving the ball a

:06:29. > :06:38.clean. Unfortunately, he is away from the

:06:39. > :06:52.side cushion and just the black now is going to put Joe safe.

:06:53. > :06:57.37 points ahead with a possible 35 still on.

:06:58. > :07:09.38. So Johnson, the underdog, 9 frames to 8 in front. And you know,

:07:10. > :07:13.on the very, very smallest of the margins, titles are won and lost.

:07:14. > :07:30.Just take a look at what happens in frame 18.

:07:31. > :07:50.Well, that is a cruel fluke and one sympathy is with Steve there. That

:07:51. > :08:17.really hurts. And at such a vital stage.

:08:18. > :08:24.Reason why he shouldn't. The yellow is not as easy as he planned. But he

:08:25. > :08:43.is back in perfect position. So Joe goes two ahead. Needs the

:08:44. > :09:12.blue and the pink. APPLAUSE

:09:13. > :09:20.So Joe gets the fluke of the final so far, and makes it 10-8. I got my

:09:21. > :09:26.luck in the final. I watched it back afterwards and there was certain

:09:27. > :09:32.times where the lucks went with me and I won important frames with that

:09:33. > :09:42.a little bit of rung in. Maybe that affected him. So 25 ahead now, Joe.

:09:43. > :09:46.35 points remaining. So we are in this situation again, where with who

:09:47. > :11:01.takes this red could very well be the winner.

:11:02. > :11:18.Well that rather poor effort by Joe, he might pay for that.

:11:19. > :11:33.APPLAUSE Well, by recall that statement.

:11:34. > :11:44.He is having the run-in, but you got to take it when it comes your way.

:11:45. > :11:51.Steve, of course, has the problem of not only hitting the red, but trying

:11:52. > :11:54.to keep it safe. It would be disaster for him, should Joe have a

:11:55. > :12:14.chance at a pot. So now, 31 points ahead and this red

:12:15. > :13:12.will make Joe compare Tivoli save. What a session this has been. Quite

:13:13. > :13:18.unbelievable, and one in fairness to Steve, one must say that as well as

:13:19. > :13:26.Joe has played, and my word he has played well - he certainly had the

:13:27. > :13:28.running but then, one can say he has overcome the big occasion while

:13:29. > :13:39.nobody thought he could. So it's great credit to him. So without

:13:40. > :13:45.question of doubt, Joe is going to take all four frames in this first

:13:46. > :13:54.session to lead by 12 frames to 8, and that gives Steve quite a task.

:13:55. > :13:56.So 12 frames to 8 it is. And I just remember thinking, well he's

:13:57. > :14:00.outplaying me. And I really struggled. I tried as hard as I

:14:01. > :14:10.could to get back every session. 25. Joe Johnson.

:14:11. > :14:23.APPLAUSE Well, obviously, Johnson thought

:14:24. > :15:49.that plant was on. But he could regret playing it now.

:15:50. > :15:57.Noticeable after coming on after the interval, Steve staying down that a

:15:58. > :15:58.little bit longer on some shot. Walking around and just thinking

:15:59. > :16:09.positive thoughts. His record since he came into the

:16:10. > :16:14.professional game, has been just unbelievable, really. I feel this is

:16:15. > :17:18.probably the greatest challenge he has ever had to face.

:17:19. > :17:21.Just the pink now to leave Joe Johnson needing snookers in this

:17:22. > :19:01.frame. With that break of 52, Steve Davis

:19:02. > :19:09.closes to 3 frames behind. Johnson still leading 12 frames to 9. Well

:19:10. > :19:14.the next 2 were shared, so now it's 13 frames to 10 in the under dog,

:19:15. > :19:16.Johnson's favour. Steve to may, no score. A lot of pressure on this

:19:17. > :19:38.shot. It was indeed, no position

:19:39. > :19:40.guaranteed if he got it. Every possibility of leaving a very good

:19:41. > :20:08.opening for his opponent if he missed it.

:20:09. > :21:42.15. That was a nice shot by Steve, clearings that red, so after potting

:21:43. > :21:49.the black, the black won't be available in both corner pockets.

:21:50. > :21:53.And I'm certain that a nice big break here, would be a nice boost

:21:54. > :22:18.for him. Yes, if Davis can win this frame,

:22:19. > :22:22.perhaps with this visit to the table, a deficit of two frames going

:22:23. > :22:29.into the final session would be recoverable, obviously. If he were

:22:30. > :24:01.to lose it, the deficit of four would take some retrieving.

:24:02. > :25:00.Just this pink and one more red... Would leave the frame safe.

:25:01. > :25:06.And a good performance this, by Steve. Certainly looked to be on the

:25:07. > :25:21.ropes at 1 stage. I said earlier that this was one of

:25:22. > :25:25.the his great challenges, mainly because he has not played his best,

:25:26. > :25:29.whether it's due to the pressure or what have you.

:25:30. > :25:37.When he came from behind against Willie Thorne in the UK, Willie was

:25:38. > :25:43.playing brilliantly, but so was Steve. So this is a bit different.

:25:44. > :25:48.And in this frame, showing he can stand up to it.

:25:49. > :26:09.Question, when he was 12-8 down, this world final looked as if it

:26:10. > :26:16.could be slipping away from him. But he's sure of winning this frame now.

:26:17. > :27:07.So it will be 3 out of four for him. Since mid-session interval.

:27:08. > :27:26.Davis's third century of this final. Following his consecutive efforts of

:27:27. > :27:30.108, and 107 in the third and fourth frames.

:27:31. > :27:41.APPLAUSE So, would that break of 100 Steve

:27:42. > :27:45.Davis, he takes the last frame of the afternoon, but it's Joe Johnson

:27:46. > :27:52.who takes a 13 frames to 11 lead into the final session. What a

:27:53. > :27:58.match! And it's the underdog, 33-year-old Joe Johnson who led

:27:59. > :28:04.going into the final session, 13-11. This is a man who until this point

:28:05. > :28:11.hasn't won a single ranking title. And here he was, leading one of the

:28:12. > :28:16.iconic players of the 1980s. With the Yorkshire crowd beginning to

:28:17. > :28:19.sniff an upset, they got firmly behind their man, Johnson surged

:28:20. > :28:34.ahead even further. It's Steve to play, frame 28.

:28:35. > :29:47.Well, would you believe that! ? And that is so unlike Steve. And a gift

:29:48. > :30:04.of a chance here for Joe. Couldn't ask for more than this.

:30:05. > :30:10.Well I never like to use the word "pressure" too loosely, but surely

:30:11. > :30:20.that's the reason that Steve missed the black. So Joe now 25 points

:30:21. > :30:30.ahead. And without any problems, he should clear the colours. And Steve

:30:31. > :30:38.was picking up his rest to say that will do, but he's put it back again.

:30:39. > :30:44.25 points behind, 22 on the table. And that frame indeed went to

:30:45. > :30:49.Johnson. He is two frames away from the most incredible of victories at

:30:50. > :31:17.the Crucible. 16 frames to 12 the front.

:31:18. > :33:19.REFEREE: Foul. And could be a free now, it's not quite.

:33:20. > :33:33.There's ?112,000, ?72,000 to the winner, and ?42,000 to the loser.

:33:34. > :33:42.I think his eyebrows were applauding the shot before he got it.

:33:43. > :33:59.He was just playing as though he was in a club handicap.

:34:00. > :34:23.Doesn't seem to have any pressure at all on him.

:34:24. > :34:28.And of course, four open reds would be, could be enough for Joe.

:34:29. > :34:34.Wouldn't need to bother with the two on the side cushion.

:34:35. > :35:14.His agony is turning into a nightmare.

:35:15. > :35:20.So joe now 29 points in front. So just needs 14 points off these two

:35:21. > :35:51.open reds... So just this red... And the blue,

:35:52. > :36:09.pink or black would be sufficient to leave Steve needing snookers.

:36:10. > :36:24.Bradford's Joe Johnson, rewriting the history books.

:36:25. > :36:36.APPLAUSE I was expecting him to go 17, 13,

:36:37. > :36:38.14, 15. I may get over the line in one of them. That relaxed me. I

:36:39. > :36:45.expected him to do it. Here he is, on the brink, just

:36:46. > :38:57.wanting 1 frame. So a chance for Steve here, but a

:38:58. > :40:38.pressure shot. And I think that's the difference

:40:39. > :40:42.with Steve, normally, would have seen him knock in red in by the side

:40:43. > :41:10.of the blue, and been sure of position.

:41:11. > :41:18.Joe Johnson has learnt a great deal during the championship. He have

:41:19. > :41:20.always known him to be a terrific potter, but his safety play has been

:41:21. > :42:01.impeccable. And Steve refuses pots that I

:42:02. > :42:14.couldn't believe he would refuse. Yes, he is at it again, and the

:42:15. > :42:43.crowd are loving it. Well, I couldn't believe that Steve

:42:44. > :42:46.refused two reds he had a chance of there. He played a safety shot and

:42:47. > :43:24.of course, Joe, back in again now. APPLAUSE

:43:25. > :43:30.And of course, when the pressure's on, wanting one frame for the

:43:31. > :43:32.championship, nothing better than a few points lead early on in the

:43:33. > :43:56.frame, to give you that bit of confidence.

:43:57. > :44:30.22, Joe Johnson. APPLAUSE

:44:31. > :45:41.And again, Steve not getting the right contact on the reds there. And

:45:42. > :47:14.now, just a safety shot left. Well that certainly looked in the

:47:15. > :47:30.pocket. Quite regularly he finds that baulk

:47:31. > :48:38.cushion. And John that, shot, surely, says it

:48:39. > :48:44.all. Yes, but that is probably the wildest shot I have seen Steve play

:48:45. > :48:53.in 3 or 4 years. He through his cue as that one. -- at that one.

:48:54. > :49:30.Those little touches make so much difference.

:49:31. > :49:55.No, just a screw for the pink into the opposite middle.

:49:56. > :49:59.I don't think the pink will pot so it gives Steve a chance here. The

:50:00. > :51:12.pink going on the black spot. 20, Steve Davis. Another miss by

:51:13. > :51:16.Steve! Looked all set. But now just five points in front. And one can

:51:17. > :51:23.only think the pressure is getting to Steve. And of course, misses like

:51:24. > :51:47.that with just increase Joe's confidence.

:51:48. > :52:07.And treating it as another game of snooker.

:52:08. > :52:26.And Joe will be, I'm sure, thinking now, all I've got to do is hold

:52:27. > :52:37.myself together, and the choif is mine -- championship's mine.

:52:38. > :53:11.There's enough reds all around the centre of the table.

:53:12. > :53:14.Obviously, too straight on the red in the middle, will want to be the

:53:15. > :53:35.other side of the blue. 14.

:53:36. > :54:02.And he'll certainly never have a better chance than this of becoming

:54:03. > :54:11.world champion. 14 points in front. -- 15 points in front.

:54:12. > :54:15.And Steve must be becoming resigned now to becoming runner-up for the

:54:16. > :54:32.second year running. What a tournament to win for your

:54:33. > :54:37.first one - the World Championship. And Joe, quite rightly, not rushing

:54:38. > :55:03.at all this break. Can obviously see this is the one.

:55:04. > :55:14.By taking the green there, of course, it means... He needs both

:55:15. > :55:27.reds, red and a colour and the last red to clinch this vital frame.

:55:28. > :55:48.Just 17 days ago, he was a rank outsider.

:55:49. > :56:11.Steve just waiting in his chair. I'm sure... Brilliant potting from this

:56:12. > :56:11.fella from Bradford. Nothing to stop him now.

:56:12. > :56:23.CHEERING Not quite! It must be said, he had

:56:24. > :56:24.the run of the balls, but it takes nothing away from his brilliant

:56:25. > :56:44.potting. And still thoroughly enjoying every

:56:45. > :56:46.moment of it. The crowd here at the Crucible are going mad for

:56:47. > :57:02.Bradford's the Joe Johnson. A most remarkable world final, I

:57:03. > :57:06.have ever seen. And Joe Johnson defeats Steve Davis, 18 frames to

:57:07. > :57:18.12, as the capacity crowd go completely mad! The shock of the

:57:19. > :57:25.1385 final and how I felt afterwards, it was nowhere near the

:57:26. > :57:30.same playing Joe. You have outplayed me, 18 to 12, what can I say?

:57:31. > :57:39.Desperately disappointed. I got beaten.

:57:40. > :57:49.The emotions I felt, was just... Fantastic. Elation. There was no

:57:50. > :57:54.words that could explain it. All the world champions feel the same

:57:55. > :57:55.feeling. Is that you have finally achieved the ambition of that you

:57:56. > :58:11.have always hoped for. This was by any standard, a seismic

:58:12. > :58:19.sporting surprise. A 150-to-1 outsider. Joe Johnson, reaching the

:58:20. > :58:24.pinnacle of his sport having never won a match at the Crucible that

:58:25. > :58:29.year. 12 months later, he was back in the final again, in the defence

:58:30. > :58:37.of his title, in a carbon copy showdown against Steve Davis. On

:58:38. > :58:40.that occasion, the Nugget prevailed. Joe Johnson is living proof that the

:58:41. > :58:45.sport, every under dog has their day. And in Joe's case, fully

:58:46. > :58:49.deserved as well. It was fantastic to list the trophy, take it back to

:58:50. > :58:53.my club and everyone have the picture with the trophy. I mean, it

:58:54. > :58:57.was quite special.
