:00:06. > :00:10.It is the year ending for Na Li and what an incredible sporting year it

:00:10. > :00:15.has been. Welcome to a very special programme

:00:15. > :00:25.- we look back at the Scots to have made the headlines. Who will be the

:00:25. > :00:40.

:00:40. > :00:43.first Sport Nation sports person of It has been described as the

:00:43. > :00:48.greatest sporting year ever and Scots were at the heart of it.

:00:48. > :00:55.Olympic gold, Grand Slam titles and world champions. Who would you say

:00:55. > :00:59.has come out on top? That is the question we asked our

:00:59. > :01:06.panel of experts. More on that later but first let's relive some

:01:06. > :01:11.of the memorable moments of 2012 boast home and abroad.

:01:11. > :01:17.Heather Stanning starred in the London 2012 gold rush when she won

:01:17. > :01:23.Team GB's first gold and the first ever women's gold medal for Great

:01:23. > :01:32.Britain. I was thinking, look how many people are watching us! It was

:01:33. > :01:40.incredible. Tim Baillie originally completed -- competed in the K one

:01:40. > :01:50.class but he switched and he and Etienne Stott paddled to gold.

:01:50. > :01:56.

:01:56. > :02:02.Scott Brash won gold as part of the men's showjumping team. The man

:02:02. > :02:07.from Peebles, Scott Brash, what a performance. Michael Jamieson took

:02:08. > :02:11.silver in the 200 metres breaststroke. He broke two British

:02:11. > :02:21.records on the way to the final and was only beaten in the final by the

:02:21. > :02:23.

:02:23. > :02:30.two-time world champion who won in record time. David Florence won his

:02:30. > :02:36.second Olympic silver. Luke Patience won silver in the 470

:02:36. > :02:42.class. Back in 1912 Britain last won a team medal in Olympic

:02:42. > :02:50.gymnastics. A century later Daniel Purvis was part of the team who

:02:50. > :02:54.rode their name in history. Emily McGuire it was part of the hockey

:02:54. > :03:04.team who secured bronze over -- after a win against New Zealand.

:03:04. > :03:06.

:03:06. > :03:15.Eton Dorney saw a Team GB gold rush. David Smith's mixed cox for road to

:03:15. > :03:25.gold, beating favourites Germany. Craig McLean cycled to gold with

:03:25. > :03:27.

:03:27. > :03:32.his partner Anthony cappers. Neil Fachie won gold in the time-trial.

:03:32. > :03:42.Them in the Olympic Stadium, two Scots who found Paralympic success,

:03:42. > :03:43.

:03:43. > :03:48.Libby Clegg and Stef Reid, both won silver. Aileen McGlynn celebrated

:03:48. > :03:55.double Paralympic success, silver in the time-trial and bronze in the

:03:55. > :03:59.individual pursuit. 18-year-old James Clegg made his Paralympic

:03:59. > :04:07.debut in the poor and came away with a bronze medal in the 100

:04:07. > :04:17.metres butterfly. -- in the pool. The women had a year to forget --

:04:17. > :04:24.

:04:24. > :04:34.to forget but the men fared better. Only 10 other people have done what

:04:34. > :04:39.Dario Franchitti did. 2012 will be a year to forget for Scotland's

:04:39. > :04:44.rugby team, who got the wooden spin -- wooden spoon and the Six Nations.

:04:44. > :04:54.A then things seem to be looking up after three straight wins against

:04:54. > :04:57.

:04:57. > :05:07.Australia, Fiji and Samoa are but after a loss to Tonga Andrew

:05:07. > :05:07.

:05:07. > :05:14.Robinson resigned. I have never seen a goal scored like that from

:05:14. > :05:20.that distance. Without a win since 2008, Scotland were hoping for a

:05:20. > :05:30.reversal in fortunes but Koh Dong island Duff Ireland proved too

:05:30. > :05:30.

:05:30. > :05:39.strong. -- but Ireland proved too strong. Steve and Hendry showed

:05:39. > :05:43.there was still life in the old dog when he got a 100 -- but after a

:05:43. > :05:52.quarter-final exit to Steve McGuire the most successful snooker player

:05:52. > :05:57.of all time decided to hang up his pool cue. The -- his snooker cue.

:05:57. > :06:02.Some great moments still to come as tonight we reveal sport nation's

:06:02. > :06:08.choice for top form of 2012. make the final decision we asked

:06:08. > :06:15.six experts to name the one sports man or one and they believed should

:06:15. > :06:19.win. Let's meet the panel. Liz McColgan is a former world champion

:06:19. > :06:26.and double Commonwealth games winner who is still at the heart of

:06:26. > :06:35.Scottish athletics, coaching in her home town of Dundee. Graham O breed

:06:35. > :06:43.twice hold -- held the world record in cycling. Even your head is a

:06:43. > :06:48.four-time world junior champion. Lee McConnell has won world and

:06:48. > :06:52.European and Commonwealth games medals in the 400 metres, 400-metre

:06:52. > :07:00.hurdles and relays in her international career. For Alex

:07:00. > :07:06.Arthur is a former British European and WBO super-featherweight

:07:06. > :07:16.champion with a professional record of 31 wins and just three losses.

:07:16. > :07:22.Susan Engel star for his Scotland's most-capped badminton players.

:07:22. > :07:28.is the panel. They challenge is to choose the sport nation person of

:07:28. > :07:38.the year. We have narrowed it down to five Scots who have had its -- a

:07:38. > :07:42.stand-out 2012. Ricky Burns, Scotland's WBO lightweight champion.

:07:42. > :07:49.There is or well-known theory in sport that says it takes hard work

:07:49. > :07:59.to get to the top but even harder to stay there. If that is the case,

:07:59. > :08:04.in 2012 Ricky Burns has put in the hard graft for stockists -- hard

:08:04. > :08:09.graft. But 29-year-old has made it two successful defences of his WBO

:08:09. > :08:15.lightweight crown. He makes to aimed -- to make that three in

:08:15. > :08:21.London next week. I have just been getting more confident. I am coming

:08:21. > :08:31.out and fighting a lot more aggressively. I think I have a good

:08:31. > :08:33.

:08:33. > :08:41.combination. A successful first defence of his title came in the

:08:41. > :08:46.spring. Burns once again showed his superpowers to the world. He is the

:08:46. > :08:56.Clark Kent of boxing. Once he is in the ring he becomes Superman. At

:08:56. > :09:05.

:09:05. > :09:11.side he is a lovely guy. -- outside. Rickey Burns! The fight the fans

:09:11. > :09:21.craved came in September. London's Kevin Mitchell was to provide the

:09:21. > :09:28.

:09:28. > :09:33.spark and he came up against Burns power. Kevin Mitchell is being

:09:33. > :09:37.knocked. Me and Kevin wanted to fight for a couple of years. The

:09:37. > :09:47.fight had been talked about for so long and I think that is why I was

:09:47. > :09:48.

:09:48. > :09:54.so up for it. It is all over in the 4th round! Kevin Mitchell is

:09:54. > :10:04.rescued. The man who was supposedly not a puncher has achieved the win

:10:04. > :10:07.

:10:07. > :10:17.of his career. After my last fight I went over for a week, took my

:10:17. > :10:21.

:10:21. > :10:30.training staff. What did misses mind if I had a chance to meet

:10:30. > :10:37.Floyd himself. -- she didn't. You wake up and the sun is out. Even at

:10:37. > :10:46.night, the heat is unbelievable. It is so much better getting out of

:10:46. > :10:56.rain -- out of bed and not having the rain. 2012, a phenomenal year

:10:56. > :10:59.

:10:59. > :11:07.for Ricky Burns. I have been with Amanda for about eight years. She

:11:07. > :11:14.always says that she is the mature one and I need to grow up. So the

:11:14. > :11:19.real boss is misses Burns? That's right.

:11:19. > :11:22.Now time for the Scottish golden girl of London 20 told. Katherine

:11:22. > :11:26.Grainger had three Olympic silver medals and six World Championships

:11:26. > :11:35.but she could not get the one she really wanted, an Olympic gold

:11:35. > :11:39.medal. Until the summer of 2012, Grainger proving that guts and

:11:40. > :11:43.determination can make you succeed. It has been an exciting time for

:11:43. > :11:48.Katherine Grainger since the Olympic games. As well as a gold

:11:48. > :11:57.medal she is receiving many accolades. Recently added --

:11:57. > :12:01.Edinburgh University named over in gym in her honour. -- a role in the

:12:01. > :12:07.gym. If it has been a whirlwind of things to do and places to go and

:12:07. > :12:16.people to see. It is hard to believe it really did happen. It

:12:16. > :12:26.was utter joy at the time. I did not think you could be that happy.

:12:26. > :12:28.

:12:28. > :12:32.It was as amazing a high as Beijing was a low.

:12:32. > :12:42.Beijing took me a long time to come around to and move on from and deal

:12:42. > :12:45.with. It took a few months. But I have not come down yet from this

:12:45. > :12:51.one. After Beijing she changed her

:12:51. > :13:00.discipline to compete in the double sculls with a new partner.

:13:00. > :13:04.Me and her instantly knew that this had something that very few crews

:13:04. > :13:10.had. I had not road in that boat class before. We knew from the

:13:10. > :13:17.beginning that was the level we could be aiming at. That is what we

:13:17. > :13:27.set about doing. Ultimately we loved it, we loved the journey. We

:13:27. > :13:37.had so much passion for doing and racing. She can hang her scull stop

:13:37. > :13:39.

:13:39. > :13:45.now if she really wants to. -- sculls. A lot of people say, you

:13:45. > :13:49.have to go again, you have Rio, you are at the top of your game.

:13:49. > :13:54.Especially people who have just got excited by the Olympics this time

:13:54. > :14:00.round. Other people think, well, fine if you want to continue but

:14:00. > :14:07.consider what an amazing story it is up to this point. For this

:14:07. > :14:10.Olympian it is not about being recognised. Most Olympians,

:14:10. > :14:16.especially in the room -- in the less public sports that you don't

:14:16. > :14:25.see much of in between the Games, very few people are driven by the

:14:25. > :14:32.fame side. It is fun but it is not the reason you did why you did. But

:14:32. > :14:37.I think we all have a responsibility to sort of spread

:14:37. > :14:45.the word and share our experiences and what we have benefited from

:14:46. > :14:50.sport and to get young people involved, women involved. The

:14:50. > :14:54.Olympics and the Paralympics transformed this country for

:14:54. > :14:58.women's sport and we will always remember 2012. There is an aspect

:14:58. > :15:03.that you don't want that to fade. It will inevitably but you want to

:15:04. > :15:12.hang on to that enthusiasm, that passion, excitement, inspiration.

:15:12. > :15:15.For a few weeks people thought Our next star of 2012 didn't win at

:15:15. > :15:19.Wimbledon the first time around, but come the Olympics he came back

:15:19. > :15:22.to Centre Court and defeated all who stood against him.

:15:22. > :15:31.Even more was still to come, a grand slam victory had seemed so

:15:31. > :15:34.close but yet so far, the 2012 was the year Andy Murray made history.

:15:34. > :15:38.To me it is a bit unfair the criticism he has been getting, very

:15:38. > :15:48.similar to the situation I had losing to Bjorg, and so on. A

:15:48. > :15:51.

:15:51. > :15:54.player needs to mature and he is Glorious five-hour match. Djokovic

:15:54. > :16:01.is through to play Nadal in the 2012 Australian Open final.

:16:01. > :16:04.Absolute respect to the effort of Murray today. He set the bar so

:16:04. > :16:08.high last year, been working as hard as I could to try and close

:16:08. > :16:11.that, and that is the main thing I take away from tonight, a great

:16:11. > :16:21.performance from him, he was so dominant last year, to get by me,

:16:21. > :16:31.

:16:31. > :16:40.What a way to do it! Andy Murray is through to his first ever Wimbledon

:16:40. > :16:50.I got given two Angry Birds costumes for the dogs. That was

:16:50. > :16:54.

:16:54. > :17:04.probably the strangest thing I've A brilliant start fron Murray, he

:17:04. > :17:08.

:17:08. > :17:14.hasn't won a set in a grandslam Championship number seven for Roger

:17:14. > :17:24.Federer. A fabulous first Wimbledon final for Andy Murray, he has done

:17:24. > :17:31.

:17:31. > :17:34.So here we are, 28 days after that Wimbledon final won by Roger

:17:34. > :17:44.Federer, this time to host, for the second time in its history, the

:17:44. > :17:48.

:17:48. > :17:58.He has got it, first blow in this Olympic final. There is another

:17:58. > :18:04.

:18:04. > :18:13.It is a golden triumph for Andy Murray. And he finished off like a

:18:13. > :18:19.What scenes here in New York, as the entire stadium rises for Andy

:18:19. > :18:27.Murray. It has been a long summer for everybody, French, Wimbledon,

:18:27. > :18:32.Olympics and now this. Played a lot of tennis but I gave everything in

:18:32. > :18:35.final. Murray has three championship points to win his

:18:35. > :18:39.first grand slam title. As Murray serves, forehand return from

:18:39. > :18:42.Djokovic, it is out, Andy Murray has won the title, his first grand

:18:42. > :18:51.slam! Oh, my goodness, he has gone and done it and done it the hard

:18:51. > :18:58.way. Cannot believe he has done it. Just can't. But he has. Andy Murray

:18:58. > :19:00.is a grandslam champion. The moment it happened I realised I

:19:00. > :19:04.had won I was very relieved, excited, emotional, happy and proud

:19:04. > :19:07.and you think a lot about your career when a moment like this

:19:07. > :19:17.happens and other things you have been through, a lot of tough losses

:19:17. > :19:27.

:19:27. > :19:34.Well, it was a fantastic year in golf for Paul Lawrie, the comeback

:19:34. > :19:42.kid. He won two titles over the season and over 1.5 million in

:19:42. > :19:45.prize money. And he played a big role in

:19:45. > :19:48.Europe's remarkable comeback in the Ryder Cup so Paul Lawrie is the

:19:48. > :19:53.fourth super Scot to be considered for the Sport Nation but Sports

:19:53. > :19:55.Peson Of The Year, 2012. Paul Lawrie's season has been

:19:55. > :20:01.nothing short of remarkable, two wins and nine top-10 finishes

:20:01. > :20:05.helping the 43-year-old earn over 1.5 million. And of course there

:20:05. > :20:07.was Chicago, he was playing his part in helping Europe win the most

:20:07. > :20:14.remarkable Ryder Cup match ever witnessed but the Aberdonian isn't

:20:14. > :20:20.one to dwell on his achievements. It has been good. You want to keep

:20:20. > :20:23.going. I want to make next year even better, that is what you try

:20:23. > :20:27.and do, don't want to put too much importance on this year, I think it

:20:27. > :20:30.is another good year, I was 18th in the order of merit in 2011, an

:20:30. > :20:40.improvement on the year before. If I can improve on this year next

:20:40. > :20:46.

:20:46. > :20:52.year and even better step forward. His successful 2012 is down to how

:20:53. > :20:57.he finished 2011. Last year was a huge boost in confidence. I had a

:20:57. > :21:02.run of top tens, won in Qatar. Every week was a snowball.

:21:02. > :21:05.Obviously your confidence will get a boost. He wasn't the only one

:21:05. > :21:15.taking confidence from the way he is playing. Everybody knows how

:21:15. > :21:15.

:21:15. > :21:19.good a golfer he is. He has been showing that week in week out. We

:21:19. > :21:23.can use that as inspiration, the more players we have up there in

:21:23. > :21:27.contention, the better for everybody. Of course the highlight

:21:28. > :21:33.of the golfing year for many was the Ryder Cup. For Paul Lawrie a

:21:33. > :21:35.return to the European team, after a 13-year absence. A vital win in a

:21:35. > :21:42.singles match helping Europe comeback from 10-6 down to complete

:21:42. > :21:45.a remarkable victory. We all thought, man, this is

:21:45. > :21:49.possible, you turn around, look at the board, you can see points all

:21:49. > :21:53.over the place. As much as it was a snowball for us, it was opposite

:21:53. > :21:59.for them. They could see this is getting messy, this is getting

:21:59. > :22:06.tight and we were there in 99 when it was on the other foot. It went

:22:06. > :22:09.for us, it was fantastic to be part of it. I think it might never

:22:09. > :22:16.happen again, the way it happened away from home, 10-6 down. 2012 has

:22:16. > :22:21.been one of his busiest and best. How do you follow it up? By not

:22:21. > :22:26.letting up, of course. Next season and in the years to come.

:22:26. > :22:29.What I do, golf, 43 is not that old. I plan on playing the seniors when

:22:29. > :22:33.I get to 50, playing competitive full-time golf until I am at least

:22:33. > :22:42.60, so the way I look at it, I have got 17, 18 years to play

:22:42. > :22:48.professional golf. I love what I do, not many people have a better life

:22:48. > :22:52.than me earning vast amount of money playing a game I enjoy. And

:22:52. > :22:55.not bad at it, some would say. When you hear the noise from the

:22:55. > :23:05.Paul Lawrie boys will be coming down the road

:23:05. > :23:05.

:23:05. > :23:10.Finally, no list of top Scots performance would be complete

:23:10. > :23:15.without Sir Chris Hoy. His professionalism and work ethic

:23:15. > :23:18.powered him into the top time after time. A multiple world and Olympic

:23:18. > :23:28.champion, his dream was to triumph at London 2012, but back at the

:23:28. > :23:53.

:23:53. > :23:57.beginning of the year nothing was You're working very hard, producing

:23:57. > :24:01.lactic acid and it burns and stings in your legs. Then you do it again

:24:01. > :24:06.and you rest and do it again. Every time it is feeling worse and worse

:24:06. > :24:10.before you even start the effort. Your legs just shut down and you

:24:10. > :24:12.almost grind to a halt then it gets worse and you are rolling about the

:24:12. > :24:19.floor in the foetal position, sometimes you are physically sick,

:24:20. > :24:26.it is not very pretty. But it's part of the training. It is part of

:24:26. > :24:29.what you have to do to get to the top. Hours, days, weeks and months

:24:29. > :24:36.of brutal training to achieve this, his dream of walking out to compete

:24:36. > :24:40.in his fourth Olympic Games. In March he told us he wanted to be

:24:40. > :24:43.selected in three events and wining gold was not guaranteed. I could be

:24:43. > :24:47.better then I was in Beijing but come away with no medals. The

:24:47. > :24:51.standard could raise. What happens with your rivals, you have got no

:24:51. > :24:54.control, but what you do yourself, you have control over. I aim to be

:24:54. > :25:00.better then I was and if I win three gold medals with that

:25:00. > :25:05.performance, that is fantastic. If you don't you have got to shake the

:25:05. > :25:08.guy's hand and say well done if not. He was selected for two events in

:25:08. > :25:14.London 2012, missing out on the kilometre sprint. Here comes Chris

:25:14. > :25:17.Hoy. At 36 success on the track would only be tougher than ever

:25:17. > :25:20.before. Gold medal for Great Britain, a new world record, 42.6,

:25:20. > :25:30.I don't believe what I am seeing here, they are going quicker and

:25:30. > :25:35.

:25:35. > :25:38.quicker and Great Britain have won the gold for the team sprint.

:25:38. > :25:42.Back in his hometown of Edinburgh the gold painted postbox and stamp

:25:42. > :25:45.printed in his honour. Back on track, the pressure was on in the

:25:45. > :25:55.keirin, his only chance for an individual gold, in a notoriously

:25:55. > :25:58.unpredictable event. Who is going to get it? Chris Hoy gets the gold

:25:58. > :26:04.medal here in the keirin, his sixth gold medal, he becomes the greatest

:26:04. > :26:14.achiever ever, the greatest British Olympian. His tally, six gold

:26:14. > :26:16.

:26:16. > :26:26.medals, one silver. He is the Olympic champion. The sixth of his

:26:26. > :26:26.
