:00:12. > :00:17.Be world champion comes out of a gate. 12 weeks ago he competed in

:00:17. > :00:26.the world's greatest tournament and became the world's greatest cyclist

:00:26. > :00:36.of all time. His 6th gold medal. He is the greatest male Olympians in

:00:36. > :00:37.

:00:37. > :00:44.the history of the sport. Britain's most popular sport -- bolts man

:00:44. > :00:52.since 2008. His most recent honour, the Glasgow 2014 cycling venue has

:00:52. > :00:58.been named in his honour. The 113 million venue was opened earlier

:00:58. > :01:05.this month. But today, to honour the greatest ever cyclist, a two

:01:05. > :01:08.hour extravaganza featuring some of the world's top rider. Among them,

:01:08. > :01:16.former gold medallist and world champion, Jason Queally. Phil

:01:16. > :01:20.Steele led the team in London, 2012. A former world champion and also an

:01:20. > :01:23.Olympic silver and Paralympic gold medallist. And the most famous

:01:23. > :01:33.cyclist in the world, Sir Chris Hoy it will be racing in the stadium

:01:33. > :01:36.

:01:36. > :01:41.And we are here to bring you the best of the action. Today's riders

:01:41. > :01:47.have been specially selected for the event. There are four teams in

:01:47. > :01:52.this event. First, Scotland, then England, a European team and

:01:52. > :01:56.finally, Braveheart, led by Sir finally, Braveheart, led by Sir

:01:56. > :02:03.Chris Hoy. They will compete in Prix events. A team sprint, a match

:02:03. > :02:13.sprint and this event. Points are awarded for each event and the team

:02:13. > :02:15.

:02:15. > :02:18.How are you looking, Richard? a world-class field. It is a World

:02:18. > :02:25.Cup event. It is a wonderful occasion and people are

:02:25. > :02:33.enthusiastic. Much of the attention in this the Velodrome is on the

:02:33. > :02:38.guest of honour himself and he is talking to us. Welcome! The idea,

:02:38. > :02:42.it is very exciting. I have seen the plans and the pictures and the

:02:42. > :02:47.preparations. And to finally be here am standing here and seeing it

:02:47. > :02:51.coming to fruition is an amazing feeling. Very proud and a great day

:02:51. > :02:57.for Scottish cycling. It is exciting and a lot of it is in your

:02:57. > :03:04.honour. How do you feel? And I feel very proud. I feel a bit

:03:04. > :03:10.overwhelmed. I started cycling 20 years ago at Meadowbank and I never

:03:10. > :03:16.dreamt I would have a facility in my name of this standard. It is

:03:16. > :03:23.really special to me. Can you put into words what this could do for

:03:23. > :03:30.Scottish Cycling? When you look at Manchester, you can see how cycling

:03:30. > :03:35.has flourished in Manchester. In 1994, the Hilton, we had it gone

:03:35. > :03:40.MacGregor and other riders winning medals at the top level. And now we

:03:40. > :03:44.have got world championships coming up. We are hoping that with the

:03:44. > :03:49.right people and the right places, we will give athletes a chance and

:03:49. > :03:53.the Scottish team will be successful and certainly we hope to

:03:53. > :03:58.successful and certainly we hope to do well in the Games in 18 months.

:03:58. > :04:05.And we saw the emotion and you were drained physically and mentally.

:04:05. > :04:09.Have you come down off that yet? was a great chance to reflect. It

:04:09. > :04:13.was a great chance to reflect. It has been fantastic. And today we

:04:13. > :04:19.have seen a positive side of cycling. What about the Lance

:04:19. > :04:25.Armstrong issue? It has been very disappointing. As a cyclist and a

:04:25. > :04:30.fan, it is very sad for racing. We have heard things on the grapevine

:04:30. > :04:36.about things that have happened in the past. We have heard from the

:04:36. > :04:41.press and the media and the news headlines. It is getting worse. It

:04:41. > :04:48.is very disappointing and all I can say is that at least it has sorted

:04:48. > :04:54.itself out. This has happened previously and things have been set

:04:54. > :04:59.up and it will not be tolerated. We do not want anything like that in

:04:59. > :05:07.the future. We have got to get our act together. But it is not like we

:05:07. > :05:13.have got anybody above the law. It reflects on all of ours. We will

:05:13. > :05:19.still get that cloud of suspicion. It is frustrating and disappointing.

:05:19. > :05:24.But we look forward now and as I had said, we have got a lot of nice

:05:24. > :05:27.things to talk about. A lot of cyclists have got on bikes in theed

:05:27. > :05:31.for years and we have got a fantastic facility and the

:05:31. > :05:38.Commonwealth Games coming and good people coming through and they do

:05:38. > :05:43.not have to do that to win. We want people to realise that. And we have

:05:43. > :05:50.got Scotland, England and Europe and Braveheart and you are riding

:05:50. > :05:55.for re part. Will you crush the opposition today? -- Braveheart.

:05:55. > :06:01.am riding with John Paul and some of the young riders coming in. I am

:06:01. > :06:05.keeping my end of the bargain up. Turn left at the end of the

:06:05. > :06:12.straight and that is all I can remember. It is a little bit

:06:12. > :06:18.difficult. I will do the best I can. It is a bit of an exhibition today.

:06:18. > :06:23.I am going to the start line. are fast approaching the first

:06:23. > :06:28.event which has been called the Big event which has been called the Big

:06:28. > :06:32.Brother team sprint and we can find out more. The first event in the

:06:32. > :06:37.Thunder Drome is called Big Brother because young Scottish riders are

:06:37. > :06:42.leading the teams, four per team and after each lap, a rider drops

:06:42. > :06:52.out. England have beaten Scotland before but it is exciting because

:06:52. > :06:57.in Braveheart against Europe, one Sir Chris Hoy. We have got started.

:06:57. > :07:02.The second sprint heat. Sir Chris Hoy riding competitively for the

:07:02. > :07:08.first time since the Olympics. M Forsythe has got the honour of

:07:08. > :07:14.leading out team Braveheart for the first of four that. He is dropping

:07:14. > :07:18.out and a big role going up for Sir Chris Hoy. He has not been in that

:07:18. > :07:24.position for a number of years. An indication of his state of fitness

:07:24. > :07:31.perhaps. He has come out for a couple of laps and John Paul taking

:07:31. > :07:37.over. And team Europe and Braveheart, it is pretty much neck

:07:37. > :07:45.and neck. We have got one at rider on each team to drop out and it is

:07:45. > :07:54.straight to the line. He is very at home with Braveheart. We have got

:07:55. > :08:04.good riders from the European team. And it is going to be Jason Queally

:08:04. > :08:08.that gets there first and that will be a winner for Braveheart. Europe

:08:08. > :08:18.4th on one point. Braveheart second-bottom on two. Scotland's

:08:18. > :08:18.

:08:18. > :08:23.The Velodrome has been pasting the Scottish championships and it is

:08:23. > :08:26.one of the most exciting events. -- one of the most exciting events. --

:08:26. > :08:34.pasting. Things are about to get interesting in this Scottish

:08:34. > :08:40.championship. We have got two three laps left. This is when they are

:08:40. > :08:48.getting away. The riders are fighting it out and it is game on.

:08:48. > :08:54.We have still got Kayleigh Brogan. This is where the competition

:08:54. > :09:04.starts. Two laps left and Kayleigh Brogan in the lead from Charline

:09:04. > :09:04.

:09:04. > :09:12.Joiner. She has been looking very alert. Is anybody coming from

:09:12. > :09:18.behind tea macro --? And she is leading in the Scottish

:09:18. > :09:24.championship. Three riders in contention. Charline Joiner is one

:09:24. > :09:33.of them. It is a sprint for the line and who is going to get there?

:09:33. > :09:37.Charline Joiner comes through! It is the Scottish champion. A lot of

:09:37. > :09:42.riders copying the tactic of Sir Chris Hoy, leading from the front

:09:42. > :09:52.because that is a much safer place to be. Charline Joiner keen to keep

:09:52. > :09:54.

:09:54. > :10:02.out of trouble. She is the Scottish Well done. Thank you very much.

:10:02. > :10:07.was it for you? Tactically I think I did it well. I only had to come

:10:07. > :10:13.round one person and tactically it was a good race and a great track.

:10:13. > :10:20.As here you are, Scottish champion. It was a wonderful event. It was

:10:20. > :10:24.great to get that under my belt. are back with a young man that

:10:24. > :10:30.caught the eye of the great and the good in British cycling. He went on

:10:30. > :10:37.to win Commonwealth, Olympic and world championship medals. And he

:10:37. > :10:42.is going for Paralympic gold and we are talking to him.

:10:42. > :10:45.extraordinary was that, the Paralympic gold? It was a fantastic

:10:45. > :10:51.event from my point of view. It was essentially on behalf of somebody

:10:51. > :10:56.else. It was hard to get into the emotion of it but it was great with

:10:56. > :11:01.the aim kraut and the occasion was fantastic. What do you think of

:11:01. > :11:06.this place? It is amazing. I did not think we would have this in

:11:06. > :11:10.Scotland. To actually be racing on it is fantastic. What difference

:11:10. > :11:15.does it make to young cyclists that might want to compete, having

:11:15. > :11:21.something like this in Glasgow? timing is crucial. Straight after

:11:21. > :11:25.the Olympics, people were able to come back and have a go at track

:11:25. > :11:30.cycling. We have not been able to capitalise on that in Scotland

:11:30. > :11:36.before. Because of conditions and so on. But it is great for young

:11:36. > :11:41.cyclists. Thank you very much indeed. Now this has obviously been

:11:41. > :11:48.named after Chris White. We can come here and we can cycle -- Sir

:11:48. > :11:52.Chris Hoy. We can ask the fans what they think of it. Brilliant. It is

:11:52. > :11:58.great to see the kids taking part. And the adults and the

:11:58. > :12:06.professionals. He it is a really nice track. It is smooth and better

:12:06. > :12:13.than Meadowbank. It is a great opportunity for people. And this is

:12:14. > :12:18.a moment of madness and magic. This is the slow motion Mexican wave.

:12:18. > :12:23.Now it is time to go to John who is going to tell us about the match

:12:23. > :12:26.going to tell us about the match sprint. The riders are going in two

:12:26. > :12:30.sprint. The riders are going in two frees are. It is top level

:12:30. > :12:38.frees are. It is top level competition. -- going in teams of

:12:38. > :12:44.three. He is out in front of his compatriots and rivals. Trying to

:12:44. > :12:53.come round the outside. And at inside, he becomes! One of the

:12:53. > :12:59.a win for him. That is a tough one there for Callum Skinner. That is a

:12:59. > :13:06.difficult one for him. He saw him coming on be inside and he made a

:13:06. > :13:10.sudden deviation on the corner and you cannot really turn the wheel

:13:10. > :13:20.from there and he fell off at about the safest part and he fell a long

:13:20. > :13:22.

:13:22. > :13:28.A broken collarbone for Callum Skinner. We hope he is OK. Time for

:13:28. > :13:29.the semi-finals of the sprint and the semi-finals of the sprint and

:13:30. > :13:39.in the first, it is all to play for and in the second it is Sir Chris

:13:39. > :13:43.Hoy. Using all his experience to try and get past his opponent.

:13:43. > :13:47.now the race proper begins. And here it is the bell for the first

:13:47. > :13:56.semi-final of this match sprint with Scotland against England.

:13:56. > :14:04.Craig MacLean, an Olympic silver medallist in 2000. And Craig

:14:04. > :14:11.MacLean is beaten! The young legs slightly quicker than the older

:14:11. > :14:17.ones and it is England that have beaten Scotland. A very good rider.

:14:17. > :14:24.Robert Forstemann got a gold medal at the London Olympics and then, in

:14:24. > :14:33.perspective, he has got very strong legs. A bit of history between him

:14:33. > :14:37.and Sir Chris Hoy. He has surprised us with a fast start a couple of

:14:37. > :14:47.years back and we have seen a different race here. He is getting

:14:47. > :14:53.into position. And he is leading out and he is bowling. Sir Chris

:14:53. > :14:57.Hoy in the Velodrome bearing his name. It is all at stake as we have

:14:57. > :15:01.got one lap left and Robert Forstemann and Sir Chris Hoy are

:15:01. > :15:08.wheel to wheel at the top end. He is trying to put on the fire. Sir

:15:08. > :15:18.Chris Hoy response. And it is Robert Forstemann by a matter of

:15:18. > :15:23.

:15:23. > :15:27.Chris Hoy and Craig MacLean have not made the final of the sprint.

:15:27. > :15:34.They are in third and fourth place play-off action.

:15:34. > :15:40.This was not expected! I have not been on the bike for about ten

:15:40. > :15:47.weeks, but it would be nice statistic one offer with Craig. --

:15:47. > :15:53.it would be nice to win against Craig. When was the last time you

:15:53. > :15:59.line up alongside Craig? Probably about five or six years ago. But he

:15:59. > :16:07.is all wily old fox. I will give it my best shot. The a see what Craig

:16:07. > :16:11.has to say. Are you going to be that man over there. I have got the

:16:11. > :16:20.experience, but whether I have got the legs remains to be seen!

:16:20. > :16:26.nervous? Well, we cut our teeth together at racing against each

:16:26. > :16:32.other, so it is kind of like old times. But I am further over the

:16:32. > :16:37.hill then he is. It would be quite an achievement to beat Sir Chris

:16:37. > :16:45.Hoy in this fella drum. He has offered to rename it! -- in this

:16:45. > :16:50.Vella drome. Craig has a sports centre named after him in Grantown-

:16:50. > :16:54.on-Spey, so both these riders have a sporting facilities in their name.

:16:54. > :17:03.That tells you how much impact they That tells you how much impact they

:17:03. > :17:08.have made. The banking is something like a 4546 degree angle, so to do

:17:08. > :17:13.what they are doing is quite extraordinary. They are just

:17:13. > :17:19.wondering which of them is going to break first. No rider wants to have

:17:19. > :17:25.the lead, they want to be in the slipstream of their rivals. That is

:17:25. > :17:29.why they are not moving at all. Once you stop, it becomes a point

:17:29. > :17:33.of honour that you are not the first man to break. That can hand

:17:33. > :17:41.the impetus back to the other riders. It looks like Craig has

:17:41. > :17:50.lost his balance a bit. Go this is in the prime spot at the moment. --

:17:50. > :17:56.Chris is in the prime spot. Craig MacLean, the Paralympic gold

:17:56. > :18:02.medallist from London, versus the greatest Olympic cyclist of all

:18:02. > :18:08.time, and Britain's greatest ever Olympian, Sir Chris Hoy. Craig

:18:08. > :18:16.MacLean at trying to hold off the power of Chris Hoy. Craig MacLean

:18:16. > :18:25.looking strong. Just on the mine! It looks like Craig MacLean got

:18:25. > :18:31.there. Around of applause from Sir Chris Hoy. Craigie enjoyed that one.

:18:31. > :18:38.-- Craig enjoyed. In a proper competition it might have been an

:18:38. > :18:43.issue, but I am sure Chris will not be lodging an appeal. He will be

:18:43. > :18:49.be lodging an appeal. He will be glad to see Craig wind.

:18:49. > :18:54.celebration of cycling, not just about results. It's a carnival

:18:54. > :18:59.atmosphere here. Exhibition racing is showcasing what track cycling is

:18:59. > :19:04.to the general public, and hopefully they will come back to

:19:04. > :19:09.support it in at the World Cup in November, and also the Commonwealth

:19:09. > :19:15.Games in 2014. You are not ready for it to become Craig MacLean a

:19:16. > :19:21.mean that! I don't know where that came from. We can name the toilets

:19:21. > :19:29.after you. The final of the match day and was

:19:29. > :19:33.a might be against Robert Forstemann. It shows the talent

:19:33. > :19:39.that is coming through with the likes of Craig MacLean having

:19:39. > :19:43.retired and Chris Hoy on the brink of retirement. It shows that there

:19:43. > :19:49.is relief young talent coming through, not just from England, but

:19:49. > :19:58.some of the young Scots like John Paul and Callum Skinner. A Mardi

:19:58. > :20:02.being stalked by the bulky powerful figure of Robert Forstemann.

:20:02. > :20:07.Forstemann looks like he is trying to do what Craig MacLean did in the

:20:07. > :20:10.semifinal, take him up to the barriers. He does not seem to be

:20:10. > :20:20.very comfortable in the tracks very comfortable in the tracks

:20:20. > :20:21.

:20:21. > :20:31.stand. But he has managed to get out of that position. The race is

:20:31. > :20:31.

:20:31. > :20:38.on! Forstemann on the inside, he will not let his rival in. The bell

:20:38. > :20:42.tells you he -- we are in the last lap. Europe versus England. Robert

:20:42. > :20:45.Forstemann is exceptionally powerful. And sell it proves!

:20:45. > :20:50.powerful. And sell it proves! Robert Forstemann is the winner. --

:20:51. > :21:00.and so it proves. After two events, and so it proves. After two events,

:21:01. > :21:05.

:21:05. > :21:12.Away from the thunder drum, it is also the Scottish Championship. --

:21:12. > :21:17.Thunder Drome. Sadly no exciting climax today. That injury to Callum

:21:17. > :21:24.Skinner meant that it was a walkover for John Paul. It is part

:21:24. > :21:29.of the race, so I am hoping he gets better soon. You are in a race that

:21:29. > :21:35.Sir Chris Hoy made famous. He started off where you are. Do you

:21:35. > :21:42.have ambitions to end up where he is? Absolutely, he inspired me to

:21:42. > :21:47.start cycling. Watching him in Athens in 2004, that was the first

:21:47. > :21:53.time I had seen it track cycling. It inspired be to try it. To follow

:21:53. > :21:58.in his footsteps is what I have dreamt of. So it is fantastic.

:21:58. > :22:04.Congratulations, even though it is not the right circumstances. You

:22:04. > :22:14.are the champion. John Paul is the are the champion. John Paul is the

:22:14. > :22:18.

:22:18. > :22:27.Joining me now it is David Mellor. What do if make of this? -- David

:22:27. > :22:34.Miller. It is a world-class venue for Glasgow and Scotland. We should

:22:34. > :22:41.consider ourselves very lucky. admitted to using drugs back in the

:22:41. > :22:45.day in the Tour de France. Do we have a clean sport now? You have to

:22:45. > :22:50.be careful making such definitive comments, because I don't think it

:22:50. > :22:54.what ever be fully clean. But the difference is we have an anti-

:22:54. > :22:59.doping culture. If you come into the sport now you are going to have

:22:59. > :23:06.a level playing field. If you have the right people around you, you

:23:06. > :23:14.can end up having no -- no regrets. Be the best you could ever be. A

:23:14. > :23:19.few years ago, that was not the case. So it is a sport that my son

:23:19. > :23:25.may be 14 months on, but even if he was 18 now I would let him get into

:23:25. > :23:33.it. Do you think you and kids now will take up cycling? A I think

:23:33. > :23:42.they will, for numerous reasons. If you get into sport, greasy a venue

:23:42. > :23:48.or an event, it should be romantic. -- you see a venue. I think many

:23:48. > :23:53.kids in the past have seen that there previously was no way they

:23:53. > :24:00.could have started on the road to the dream, but now with this

:24:00. > :24:06.Velodrome bacon make that happen. They are very lucky. Now it is the

:24:06. > :24:14.big event, in the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome - the keirin. Chris Hoy

:24:14. > :24:21.it is riding, and the big question it is riding, and the big question

:24:21. > :24:28.is can he win it? The climax to the Thunder Drome. The keirin, arguably

:24:28. > :24:33.Chris Hoy's favourite event. He is after all the Olympic champion. And

:24:33. > :24:40.we have another Olympic gold medallist in the field as well. His

:24:40. > :24:46.team-mate Philip Hindes. This is eight laps of the track, 5 1/2

:24:46. > :24:54.paced by the motor riced... For the final two-and-a-half laps, a

:24:54. > :24:59.freefall. More riders than usual on the track. Normally there are only

:24:59. > :25:09.six riders. You do not want to be too far at the back. Chris Hoy

:25:09. > :25:13.ready in six the at the back. He usually is further up. But it makes

:25:13. > :25:19.it more complicated and probably a little bit more dangerous as well.

:25:19. > :25:27.It is a high quality field, a lot of Olympic medals from Craig

:25:27. > :25:34.MacLean, Jason Queally, Chris Hoy and Philip Hindes. So it is Jason

:25:34. > :25:42.Queally for the brave heart team, the Olympic gold medallist. Tucked

:25:42. > :25:46.in behind the Doney, plenty can happen from here on in there.

:25:46. > :25:53.are boxed pretty tightly together. It makes it difficult to move up

:25:53. > :25:59.and down the line. You have to be careful. I would imagine Chris Hoy

:25:59. > :26:03.able try out some. To get himself a little bit better placed. You can

:26:03. > :26:12.see Mitchell coming from the back and manoeuvring for position. Three

:26:12. > :26:21.laps to go. The donee will drop out soon and the real racing will begin.

:26:21. > :26:27.Chris Hoy getting onto Craig MacLean's will. The race is on. The

:26:27. > :26:32.closing stages of the keirin, Jason Queally leading out, Chris Hoy is

:26:32. > :26:42.back in fourth place and now starting to make his move. Coming

:26:42. > :26:43.

:26:43. > :26:50.up to the Basle, and Sir Chris Hoy one -- will he win at the keirin?

:26:50. > :26:56.He's come up the it -- he has come up the outside. Is that a fast

:26:56. > :27:02.finish? Es! Chris Hoy takes the keirin in the Thunder Drome.

:27:02. > :27:08.have seen him in that position so many times in this discipline it

:27:08. > :27:15.over the years since 2007. At think he has been beaten perhaps it on on

:27:15. > :27:19.the two or three occasions. What a day. Team Europe on six points, in

:27:19. > :27:21.third the English on seven, in second of Scotland on eight, but

:27:21. > :27:28.second of Scotland on eight, but the winners are brave heart on nine

:27:28. > :27:33.points. Go I was quite a way back, and Jason was driving hard. My next

:27:33. > :27:38.a struggling a little bit, but I managed to get him on the outside.

:27:38. > :27:44.A great feeling to win on this track for the first time. You have

:27:44. > :27:49.been busy since the Olympics. What is happening next? On Tuesday our

:27:49. > :27:54.goal on my first holiday for a week, then it is time to get back in

:27:54. > :27:58.training. The difficulty is finding time, because you have so many

:27:58. > :28:03.people to see and so many things to do. The requests are coming thick

:28:03. > :28:09.and fast - so many charity events, media events, and you have to say

:28:09. > :28:13.no to most of them, but even so do I still very busy. I am not going

:28:13. > :28:19.to go for the World Cup this season, I will just keep its simmering away

:28:19. > :28:29.and hit it hard for 2014. It's been a great occasion today, and well

:28:29. > :28:33.done with the Thunder Drome. I hope everyone has enjoyed it at home.

:28:33. > :28:41.that's it from the Thunder Drome. Well done to it all the Scottish
