:00:23. > :00:30.The call John Hartson and Elliot Richards wannabes in cancer. I never

:00:31. > :00:35.thought I could not come back, just wanted to get the treatment done and

:00:36. > :00:41.get back to full fitness. Kristian is on the road to Rio with David

:00:42. > :00:49.Omeregie. If I can just run really well I'll be happy. We catch up with

:00:50. > :00:55.Newport County boss Warren Feeney. I'm not one of those people who want

:00:56. > :00:57.to jump ship. And Non brings a surprise guest to training with the

:00:58. > :01:00.seven sisters. Elite sports stars often

:01:01. > :01:05.take their health for granted. But what happens when you're told

:01:06. > :01:09.that you have cancer? Eliot Richards was playing

:01:10. > :01:12.football for Cheltenham Town Six month after being given

:01:13. > :01:16.the all clear he's back playing. John Hartson, himself a cancer

:01:17. > :01:25.survivor, has been to find out more. I was lucky enough to be

:01:26. > :01:36.a professional footballer I played for some of the biggest

:01:37. > :01:41.clubs in the country. But my biggest victory

:01:42. > :01:44.was surviving cancer. Well, we've both been

:01:45. > :01:58.given that dreaded news, you know, you've got testicular

:01:59. > :02:01.cancer and it's quite nice now to be in full health, both of us,

:02:02. > :02:04.especially yourself. Just walking here in the fresh air,

:02:05. > :02:07.how are you feeling now? It's nice to be back to normality,

:02:08. > :02:15.kind of as it is. It's quite a long time getting back

:02:16. > :02:19.to health but thankfully I'm When I look back it's quite good

:02:20. > :02:27.to get back playing games and just I've not really had a pre-season

:02:28. > :02:32.to get back there, but it's been 3000 men per year are diagnosed

:02:33. > :02:41.with prostate or testicular cancer. Almost half of those diagnosed

:02:42. > :02:47.are males under the age of 35. It's believed that one in every 195

:02:48. > :02:51.men will be diagnosed with testicular cancer

:02:52. > :02:56.during their lifetime. Obviously when you first get told

:02:57. > :02:59.you have testicular cancer, I've been there myself,

:03:00. > :03:04.it's not a nice thing to be told. My first thought was,

:03:05. > :03:10."My season's over," honestly. And then it hit me that

:03:11. > :03:15.I was seriously and I thought, right, just do what I've got to do

:03:16. > :03:21.to get through it and grind on and get through and it's

:03:22. > :03:25.all worth it in the end. Mum and dad were there

:03:26. > :03:30.all the way through, my wife was sat next

:03:31. > :03:32.to my bed every day, so I've got a lot to thank her

:03:33. > :03:35.for putting up with me. Quite grumpy going through it,

:03:36. > :03:39.so I've got a lot of people to thank and then Cheltenham,

:03:40. > :03:43.getting back fit, they were terrific and they've just been helping me

:03:44. > :03:47.all the way through it. When somebody has that type

:03:48. > :03:52.of illness you just feel for them. We wanted to make sure

:03:53. > :03:54.we were there to support him, as a professional body,

:03:55. > :03:58.if you like, he was professional footballer with us and he will be

:03:59. > :04:01.again. It's just trying to keep his

:04:02. > :04:06.positive attitude going. It must be hard at some

:04:07. > :04:09.stage when you think, And you've just got to keep

:04:10. > :04:13.their spirits up. In terms of myself I was also told

:04:14. > :04:24.I had testicular cancer but it had spread to both my lungs

:04:25. > :04:26.and onto my brain. I don't think I could have

:04:27. > :04:29.resumed my career but with yourself you have resumed your career,

:04:30. > :04:32.got the all-clear. I got it quite early so I've not had

:04:33. > :04:37.quite as long treatment as you had. Going through it I've come back

:04:38. > :04:40.and thankfully I still had a club that

:04:41. > :05:21.quick to pull a hamstring. And you've also represented Wales,

:05:22. > :05:24.played that one time under Williams I went away for a week

:05:25. > :05:32.so it was a good experience to go there and very proud moment to put

:05:33. > :05:36.the Wales top on and hopefully do well, and get back and never say

:05:37. > :05:42.never, hopefully in the first team. It's still vital for thousands

:05:43. > :05:46.of football out there Obviously some days you just

:05:47. > :07:28.want to pig-out on chocolates Yeah, I ran for an hour

:07:29. > :07:35.last Friday, so... Motivating each other

:07:36. > :07:48.to get going from the go. As soon as we're up

:07:49. > :07:51.there we're going for it. Right girls, I'm back here tonight

:07:52. > :07:54.in the mud to watch you train and see how you got on since

:07:55. > :07:57.the start of the season. The girls have been

:07:58. > :08:09.working really hard on their fitness, skills, health,

:08:10. > :08:15.diet, but they could be doing with a helping hand

:08:16. > :08:17.on the pitch, so who Shane Williams, always

:08:18. > :08:20.a buzz of excitement! Is there a sharper winger

:08:21. > :08:25.in the world at the moment I've been working with Seven Sisters

:08:26. > :08:39.all season, but you've Yeah, Rachel plays, my cousin

:08:40. > :08:42.and she's been playing What do you make of

:08:43. > :08:49.the training sessions so far? I've been hiding in shadows here,

:08:50. > :08:53.and a lot of endeavour and I'll certainly enjoy each other's

:08:54. > :09:01.company, there's camaraderie You can certainly see

:09:02. > :09:06.a lot of these girls have lost weight and it's only

:09:07. > :09:09.going to help in their rugby as well Girls, I've been really impressed

:09:10. > :09:16.with you this season. I think there's one little thing

:09:17. > :09:19.missing on the pitch and I've got Come with me and see

:09:20. > :09:26.if you can sidestep. When you're sidestepping

:09:27. > :09:33.you got to move There's no point

:09:34. > :09:38.just going straight. If I'm just running straight

:09:39. > :09:41.at the defender and I step she's just going to come with me,

:09:42. > :09:44.and then hold me really But, if I move across as she comes

:09:45. > :09:52.with me and then step. You're going to put the defender

:09:53. > :09:57.off-balance, and it should work. At the moment you're

:09:58. > :10:07.going over on your leg. It should make a noise

:10:08. > :10:11.when you do it. It's good, even better

:10:12. > :10:12.he's here, Keep doing it, keep doing it,

:10:13. > :10:15.until it comes naturally. You are doing everything

:10:16. > :10:17.right, it's just... It's hard for her to

:10:18. > :10:28.change angle there, seen? You've got to move the defender

:10:29. > :10:34.as much as you can. I've personally done one sidestep

:10:35. > :10:37.in my life before tonight A lot of us just

:10:38. > :10:40.automatically look for It's good to have

:10:41. > :10:43.another option there. I think I taught Shane

:10:44. > :10:51.how to step more so. I think we've seen already she's

:10:52. > :10:53.a better sidestepper than me. The girls have done

:10:54. > :10:55.well though, Shane. Do you think they can make good

:10:56. > :10:58.and get back to the Premiership? tonight to tell me they are very

:10:59. > :11:06.committed and they give 100%. If they keep working

:11:07. > :11:08.like this could be To athletics, and one young athlete

:11:09. > :11:18.who's hoping to make the GB team Christian Malcolm has been to meet

:11:19. > :11:34.the U20's World Record 60m Back to what I spent the last 18

:11:35. > :11:37.months of my athletics career to meet someone who is just starting

:11:38. > :11:55.out. How's it going? Not too bad. You're

:11:56. > :12:02.not a get any more. I've improve the lot in two years, I'm a big diet

:12:03. > :12:07.now. Competing with the big guys, enjoying it so far. How was it last

:12:08. > :12:12.year for your first year as a senior? It was interesting mainly

:12:13. > :12:16.for the first reason that I lost my coach in December so between

:12:17. > :12:21.December and February I did not have a coach. I still ran very well and

:12:22. > :12:28.run a personal best indoors but this year I hope to build on that. The

:12:29. > :12:32.transition from junior to senior and your expectations, would you say you

:12:33. > :12:37.made the progression of the way you would like? I think if I progress

:12:38. > :12:42.the way I would have wanted to I would be breaking the world record

:12:43. > :12:48.now. I had high expectations but in reality there is a lot of setbacks

:12:49. > :12:52.and it is a long process. Especially in my event which is very technical.

:12:53. > :12:56.It's about how efficient you can be but I feel I am getting efficient

:12:57. > :13:06.and over time I feel I am getting better. From the start of the first

:13:07. > :13:13.model is a stride is, a lot of the world's best to do seven these days.

:13:14. > :13:19.My coach said in the 70s everyone was doing seven and then a 28

:13:20. > :13:32.strides and now it's going back to seven. I can get a lot of frequency.

:13:33. > :13:37.What is the one thing you think of when and as a sprinter it's building

:13:38. > :13:44.up the speed. But that's not until you get to 25 metres. You've got to

:13:45. > :13:49.get your hips up at eight strides. I think about touching down as fast as

:13:50. > :13:53.I can for the first horrible and embossed three of the most important

:13:54. > :13:55.because that is the acceleration phase so getting the first view is

:13:56. > :14:08.very important. I these days and I think, how do I

:14:09. > :14:16.get over that? They're very tall. They are up to my waist. It has just

:14:17. > :14:22.taken time, really. Working over the smaller hurdles allows you to work

:14:23. > :14:27.on your technique, which is what a horrible event is about, efficiency.

:14:28. > :14:35.The more efficient you are, the quicker you can run. That's what we

:14:36. > :14:42.aim to do. How has this progression been over the last 12, 80 months?

:14:43. > :14:48.He's a great kid to work with. I think the progression is coming on

:14:49. > :14:51.really nicely. You can see the big jump in his performance yet but the

:14:52. > :14:57.way he is running, that is going in the right direction. I've got to

:14:58. > :15:00.ask, you've been the best Welsh hurdler since Colin Jackson. Do you

:15:01. > :15:07.really sense of pressure on your shoulders because of that? Not at

:15:08. > :15:11.all. At the end of the day, I'm myself. I will achieve whatever I

:15:12. > :15:17.achieve. Colin Jackson had a really exceptional career so that's a very

:15:18. > :15:21.big thing for any hurdler to kind of achieve no matter what so I'm just

:15:22. > :15:26.going to do my own thing and see where that takes me. From the

:15:27. > :15:38.coach's perspective, what you think David's chances are of making it to

:15:39. > :15:41.be woody Janeiro this year? -- Rio. It's a tough event from the British

:15:42. > :15:48.point of view but I think he has a good chance. I wanted to progress

:15:49. > :15:55.nicely and go from 40 to 30. I think he has a good chance to do that.

:15:56. > :15:59.This September, season's over, you're relaxing on a beach holiday,

:16:00. > :16:04.what would you be happy with for the season? If I can get myself on the

:16:05. > :16:09.team for Rio it is is going to get me so much confidence. If I can just

:16:10. > :16:17.run so well and consistently this year, it will put me ahead for next

:16:18. > :16:18.year and make me happy. We wish you all the best, mate.

:16:19. > :16:23.Next week on Sport Wales we'll be previewing the crucial England v

:16:24. > :16:26.Wales Six Nations game - It's a fixture which every youngster

:16:27. > :16:31.dreams of playing in - but imagine it being the game

:16:32. > :16:34.where you make your debut, and on top of that you're captain!

:16:35. > :16:42.This, in his own words, is the Clive Rowlands story.

:16:43. > :16:47.Wales is the best country in the world. Put a red Jersey on it and

:16:48. > :17:11.it's even better. The first game I went to see, at a

:17:12. > :17:38.caravan park, was Wales versus all Blacks, 1953. Wales winning. Wheels

:17:39. > :17:41.haven't beaten New Zealand since. In the final trial, they picked the

:17:42. > :17:45.team and announced that evening. It was unusual. I have spoken to my

:17:46. > :17:52.wife Margaret and everybody stay behind in the clubhouse and all the

:17:53. > :17:55.press were after him. He said, I don't think he has done quite

:17:56. > :18:14.enough. He was being honest and very true. The big five said yes, I'm in

:18:15. > :18:20.the side. They were coming from all sides of the world. I could cry now

:18:21. > :18:25.thinking about it. He travelled down on Saturday morning to the match and

:18:26. > :18:34.each village as you passed to get to Cardiff, everybody was the same. We

:18:35. > :18:40.had bobble hats and scarves. -- and they had. All you could see was red

:18:41. > :18:51.and white of these bobble hats and these scarves.

:18:52. > :18:59.When I saw the new cats and there were five others with me, my face

:19:00. > :19:03.must have been a picture as well. I'm sure it's the same feeling,

:19:04. > :19:10.every player that gets that Jersey for the first time. If he doesn't,

:19:11. > :19:15.he should, because it goes through there and it registers very quickly

:19:16. > :19:27.up there what you have achieved in playing for Wales. Richard and

:19:28. > :19:29.myself as captains. I remember coming on the field together. We

:19:30. > :19:32.played very well for half of the game and England won 13 points for

:19:33. > :19:49.six. The nice thing for me was, for the

:19:50. > :20:01.next 28 years, at Cardiff, Wales always one. -- won. I wanted to beat

:20:02. > :20:24.England and that has never changed. Clive Rowlands hoisted shoulder

:20:25. > :20:31.high. Triple Crown winners and international winners for the

:20:32. > :20:36.season. I can see the ground running on, I can feel them holding me up. I

:20:37. > :20:45.can feel them lifting me up and I'm crying but that's what... We Welsh

:20:46. > :20:49.are lucky. We show our feelings. Those guys that run on that pitch,

:20:50. > :20:55.I'd surely all played the game that day and they were on the winning

:20:56. > :20:57.side. I Welsh supporters, without a shadow of a doubt, are the best

:20:58. > :21:16.supporters in the world. That's the cat that each player

:21:17. > :21:19.receives when he plays for Wales for the first time and it is the most

:21:20. > :21:27.treasured thing I've got in the house. I pass it every morning and I

:21:28. > :21:29.say, thank you. Playing for Wales and having a cap is something

:21:30. > :21:38.special. Wales and Northern Ireland

:21:39. > :21:40.continue their preparations for Euro 2016 when they meet

:21:41. > :21:43.in a friendly later this month. We've been speaking to one man

:21:44. > :21:45.who'll have a particularly keen He's played for both

:21:46. > :21:50.Cardiff and Swansea, and now it's his job to keep

:21:51. > :22:03.Newport County in the League. Talk about being in the deep end.

:22:04. > :22:06.You're 35 years old, you've never managed in the football league

:22:07. > :22:10.before and then all of a sudden you've got the hopes of a city on

:22:11. > :22:15.your shoulders. It's your job to save a proud old football club from

:22:16. > :22:19.the worst relegation of the lot. 15 months as boss of Linfield in his

:22:20. > :22:23.native Northern Ireland, Warren Feeney's only previous experience as

:22:24. > :22:28.a number one, but when John Sheridan left in January, Newport asked him

:22:29. > :22:37.to step up from his assistant role, the brief simple, keep us in the

:22:38. > :22:40.league. It's a great opportunity for me. No one wants to get relegated.

:22:41. > :22:47.You don't want relegation on your CV. As a manager, I want the best.

:22:48. > :22:52.It's not something I would want on my CV. I love the club. It's

:22:53. > :22:56.excellent. I live in the area, I know the club want stability but I'm

:22:57. > :23:04.not the type who wants to jump ship. I want to stay here for years. It

:23:05. > :23:11.was easy for me. I wanted to get back in full-time football so it was

:23:12. > :23:14.a no-brainer for me. There's not many dull moments with him. He's

:23:15. > :23:19.enthusiastic and what is the best for his players. He lets them

:23:20. > :23:25.express themselves. He certainly is a character. You can still see his

:23:26. > :23:29.quality every now and then when he joins in on the training sessions.

:23:30. > :23:34.Good communication and good technique. His sessions are very

:23:35. > :23:40.similar to an enjoyable. Look at our results since he's come in. On the

:23:41. > :23:44.training pitch every day, he drilled it into us how he wants us to play,

:23:45. > :23:53.every day. We believe he is the right man to take us forward. He

:23:54. > :23:57.certainly knows his way around the streets of South Wales. He spent

:23:58. > :24:02.three years at Cardiff city and became one of the few players to

:24:03. > :24:15.switch from blue to white with a loan spell of Swansea, on thinkable

:24:16. > :24:21.for some -- on thinkable -- unthinkable. A lot of people said

:24:22. > :24:34.you must be mad. But Rebecca was fantastic. We won the league by 15

:24:35. > :24:38.to 20 points -- Roberto. I remember warming up and a lot of Swansea fans

:24:39. > :24:45.were telling me to go back to Cardiff in a nasty way. I remember

:24:46. > :24:53.my loan spell was up and taken back to Cardiff. There was an 80% boom

:24:54. > :24:59.because fans knew I was back! I don't look of rivalry, fans are

:25:00. > :25:03.fans. I'm there to play football. It was a great move for me to move down

:25:04. > :25:13.to Swansea because I enjoyed five goals in ten games. Later this

:25:14. > :25:18.month, a nice distraction from the stresses of the job here. The

:25:19. > :25:23.friendly between Wales and Northern Ireland, who Warren Feeney played

:25:24. > :25:26.for 46 times. But did he think both countries would ever be preparing

:25:27. > :25:35.for the finals of a major tournament? We got very close one

:25:36. > :25:40.year. I think we needed one point, two points, but we ended up not

:25:41. > :25:45.getting them. It's good to see both countries going to the Urals. I

:25:46. > :25:54.think it's absolutely fantastic and obviously you know it's a friendly

:25:55. > :25:58.game but we want to do it right. How do you think Wales and Northern

:25:59. > :26:04.Ireland can do? It will be tough early on but you have to be

:26:05. > :26:09.confident at the group stages. Probably no, but they've done it, so

:26:10. > :26:11.I think once they arrived there, fantastic opportunity. It's a big

:26:12. > :26:18.stage and the players will want to show off on the big stage and I

:26:19. > :26:23.think they'll do OK. I think it was -- they will surprise a lot of

:26:24. > :26:31.people. Newport stay up and Northern Ireland get to the quarterfinals,

:26:32. > :26:35.semifinals? That would be a nice bet. My main aim is for Newport to

:26:36. > :26:45.stay up. That's my only concern at the moment. The aim is to keep us up

:26:46. > :26:47.and that's all I'm focusing on. That's it for this

:26:48. > :26:49.week's Sport Wales. Next Friday, we'll bring

:26:50. > :26:52.you all the very latest on the eve of the massive England v

:26:53. > :26:56.Wales Six Nations match. Join me at 7pm next week

:26:57. > :27:00.for that, but from all of us
