:00:19. > :00:22.He Good evening from the Celtic Manor, Newport where two years ago

:00:22. > :00:31.the World of golf descended on Newport as Europe beat the USA to

:00:31. > :00:41.win 2010 Ryder Cup. We look at on the legacy of that win, plus much

:00:41. > :00:43.

:00:43. > :00:46.more on tonight's Sport Wales. Coming up tonight: We talk to Wales

:00:46. > :00:56.manager Chris Coleman ahead of their must win qualifier against

:00:56. > :00:58.

:00:58. > :01:01.Scotland. Now we do it or where I want to do it. Wallabies legend is

:01:01. > :01:04.in town and he says it's now or never for Wales to beat Australia.

:01:04. > :01:11.After season ending injury we talk to Swansea City full back Neil

:01:11. > :01:17.Taylor. It is one of those freak things that happen to. I couldn't

:01:17. > :01:20.do anything about it. Two years ago, and no-one would ever have thought

:01:20. > :01:23.that the celebrations that we saw here at Celtic Manor on that Monday

:01:23. > :01:26.could ever be topped, but last weekend at Medinah, the Europeans

:01:27. > :01:31.staged arguably the greatest comeback of all time. But what's

:01:31. > :01:41.been the legacy of hosting the Ryder Cup for Welsh golf? Gareth

:01:41. > :01:49.

:01:49. > :01:54.Rhys Owen has been investigating. The scenes at last weekend were

:01:54. > :02:01.almost identical to the ones we saw here when Graham McDowell secured

:02:02. > :02:08.that historic victory. The Greens might have been a Welsh but there

:02:08. > :02:13.was no red blood here two years ago. In fact, a decade has passed since

:02:13. > :02:21.the last Welshman played in the Ryder Cup. So, two years on, what

:02:21. > :02:31.is the state of Welsh golf was Mark we will see maybe in another 10

:02:31. > :02:36.years -- of Welsh off? The last Welshman to feature for the

:02:36. > :02:46.European team was built price who stand up all my -- film they could

:02:46. > :02:49.send back in 2002. Price is now ranked 379th in the world. The

:02:49. > :02:55.current world rankings don't make happy reading from a Welsh

:02:55. > :03:02.perceptive, with the exception of Jamie Dodleston who lies just

:03:02. > :03:08.outside the top 50. Chris Davies has fallen 300 places in the last

:03:08. > :03:17.two years. This man is now ranked 400 night. I think we stay this has

:03:17. > :03:22.been our best potential, Jamie Donaldson. Probably struggle to see

:03:22. > :03:32.other than those two. I was convinced early on that Bradley

:03:32. > :03:34.

:03:34. > :03:39.would be a Ryder Cup player. He got close a couple of times. I would

:03:39. > :03:46.loved to be part of the Ryder Cup. But whatever cup you can be

:03:46. > :03:56.involved in the, you get with. hosting the competition made any

:03:56. > :03:59.

:03:59. > :04:05.real difference? Probably not. We will see maybe in another 10 years

:04:05. > :04:11.if there is any fruits to bear from that. I think we have got better

:04:11. > :04:17.coaches in Wales now than we did before. The legacy is affording

:04:17. > :04:20.better golf coaches. But this takes time. The year after the Ryder Cup,

:04:20. > :04:25.we saw a huge increase in the number of people participating. I

:04:25. > :04:31.went up by 10,000 people. That would be due to the schemes we have

:04:31. > :04:37.been running to increase funding. Golf development Wales was

:04:37. > :04:47.established as a result. Two players who have benefited are

:04:47. > :04:53.

:04:53. > :04:57.these two. We now have a driving range and a four hole course.

:04:58. > :05:04.is a complete pathway now from beginners to becoming integrated

:05:04. > :05:09.members of the golf club. strength of golf in Wales now is

:05:09. > :05:19.very high, too to the legacy of the Ryder Cup and that one coming.

:05:19. > :05:26.There has been plenty of a Welsh success at an amateur level. This

:05:26. > :05:33.woman was a key member. So it is there enough support if you want to

:05:33. > :05:37.take the next step? If you well over a good player, there is. -- if

:05:37. > :05:40.you are the really good player. If you're a very good player, you get

:05:40. > :05:44.everything you need. But there has probably not enough funding or

:05:44. > :05:48.coaching for the masses to get enough players to come through.

:05:48. > :05:54.in a perfect world we would have the funding to set up some sort of

:05:54. > :05:59.transitional organisation that would help players in the

:05:59. > :06:02.transition from top amateur golf to top professional golf. But Olivia

:06:02. > :06:06.Hall won her first professional tournament this summer after

:06:06. > :06:11.winning financial help in the early part of her career. But now she

:06:11. > :06:15.struggles for support. I don't feel there is enough support. When I

:06:15. > :06:20.compare myself to other nations, other girls have the same age as me,

:06:20. > :06:25.the girls in Holland have got a fantastic backing from their

:06:26. > :06:30.national Netherlands golf, and it would be fantastic to gain that

:06:30. > :06:36.interest in Wales. But I don't blame the Welsh Golf Union all

:06:36. > :06:44.sport Wales. We need to have more people playing golf to enable us to

:06:44. > :06:49.get those role-models out there. the time when I was turning pro, we

:06:49. > :06:54.had the lottery funding. I was very fortunate that it helped me to find

:06:54. > :06:59.myself. He in 2007, this man played in the Walker Cup, the amateur

:06:59. > :07:03.version of the Ryder Cup, alongside the current number one Rory

:07:04. > :07:12.McElvogue. But that is where the parallels end. Despite stint in

:07:12. > :07:16.European and Asian circuits, his career has now stalled. My funding

:07:16. > :07:20.continued into when I was a pro. It wasn't enough to cover a season, it

:07:20. > :07:25.was may be enough to cover two to three events. And then I sold

:07:25. > :07:29.shares and myself with members of the golf club to fund it. And they

:07:29. > :07:35.helped me for two years and wants the money ran out, might

:07:35. > :07:39.opportunity ran out. You can continue working on again correct

:07:39. > :07:48.you have to have the aspirations to go outside of Wales -- she can

:07:48. > :07:52.continue working on your game. Despite having a smaller population,

:07:52. > :07:57.three players from Northern Ireland have featured in recent Ryder Cups.

:07:57. > :08:01.Is the triple success simply a coincidence? One thing that the

:08:01. > :08:06.Ulster branch is very grateful for is the support of the executive in

:08:06. > :08:10.Northern Ireland and sport Northern Ireland in particular if, for the

:08:11. > :08:16.financial support given to those elite athletes. As far as golf is

:08:16. > :08:22.concerned, the boys received payments which enables them to have

:08:22. > :08:26.a competitive programmes throughout the year. Legacies take decades,

:08:26. > :08:30.not months. The success of the 2010 Ryder Cup will be assisted by the

:08:30. > :08:40.numbers in the local clubs but measures -- but measured by the

:08:40. > :08:47.

:08:47. > :08:51.faces of our TV screens be years to come. It will always be numbers, we

:08:51. > :08:58.can't accept that as an excuse, but I will be very disappointed in the

:08:58. > :09:01.next two Ryder Cups we didn't see more Welsh players. I think Wales

:09:01. > :09:08.does not have enough golfers and enough budget to improve the

:09:08. > :09:13.golfers. I don't see us doing any better. A I think we're going to

:09:13. > :09:19.get a dozen Ryder Cup players coming out of it because we have

:09:19. > :09:23.the Ryder Cup here. I think that is dreaming. It takes a while for it

:09:23. > :09:30.to happen. It doesn't happen in five minutes. If you ask when that

:09:30. > :09:33.question in 10 years' time, it could be a different answer.

:09:33. > :09:38.Working hard as everybody is. It would be nice to get myself back on

:09:38. > :09:48.the track of improving quicker now. I would definitely be thinking

:09:48. > :09:50.

:09:50. > :09:54.Well, from the drama of Medinah to a man who's hoping that some of the

:09:54. > :09:58.European comeback magic will rub off on Wales. After two defeats

:09:58. > :10:00.it's Scotland next in the World Cup Qualifiers so I caught up with

:10:00. > :10:02.Wales manager Chris Coleman From international football to

:10:02. > :10:05.international rugby, and in just over a month's time Wales' Autumn

:10:05. > :10:15.internationals get under with a Argentina who this year joined the

:10:15. > :10:26.

:10:26. > :10:30.To create the Ruby Championship Wales has been hit the six! It has

:10:30. > :10:35.been just over three weeks since that defeat in Serbia. We have had

:10:35. > :10:41.time to reflect. What role feelings now? Three weeks feels like six

:10:41. > :10:45.months. We are bitterly disappointed. I felt the players

:10:45. > :10:51.couldn't have done much more in that game. It was a very committed

:10:51. > :10:59.performance, which was the opposite some days later in Serbia. For me,

:10:59. > :11:02.it was probably the worst I had felt after defeat as a manager.

:11:02. > :11:08.After the Serbia game, I felt sorry for the players. A was disappointed

:11:08. > :11:13.but them but I also felt sorry for them because I think they thought I

:11:13. > :11:21.was trying to do something that someone else had been doing and it

:11:21. > :11:26.wasn't necessarily my way. It hasn't been working. For me, after

:11:26. > :11:31.the Serbia game, it has given me three weeks to sit down and say,

:11:31. > :11:37.right, now we have got to do it for the where I want to do it. There's

:11:37. > :11:43.a lot of changes I need to make and I will make for this next camp. I'm

:11:43. > :11:48.looking forward to it. After that defeat in Serbia, you seemed quite

:11:48. > :11:52.angry with the players. You said it was time they proved they were the

:11:53. > :11:56.golden generation. Do you still stand by that Audie regret it now?

:11:56. > :12:06.A why don't regret that. They will be the golden generation of this

:12:06. > :12:07.

:12:07. > :12:11.exceed. -- if they succeed. Don't forget, that is not them but in

:12:11. > :12:17.themselves out there and saying, we are the golden generation, it is

:12:17. > :12:20.other people. You have mentioned Gary Speed. How much has his death

:12:20. > :12:30.in affecting the players and do talk about it and the Changing

:12:30. > :12:32.

:12:32. > :12:40.Room? He will never be forgotten. Not by me or anybody else. But in

:12:40. > :12:45.terms of football, we have got to move on and go forward. It is a

:12:45. > :12:52.highly sensitive situation. I felt the pressure of that, I have done

:12:52. > :12:56.all along. And almost, I have been walking in somebody else's

:12:56. > :13:06.footsteps because Gary put a lot of good working. As soon as I got the

:13:06. > :13:12.

:13:12. > :13:17.job, it was not necessarily my way. So what is Chris Coleman's way? You

:13:17. > :13:23.say you want to draw a line under the last two games. What now?

:13:23. > :13:30.we meet up with the camp, how we do things. I spoke with Adam Ramsey

:13:30. > :13:37.yesterday because I think ready to go in another direction. -- I think

:13:37. > :13:47.we need to go in another direction. It is time to change the captain,

:13:47. > :13:47.

:13:47. > :13:54.which I will do. When he has turned up, he runs himself into the ground.

:13:54. > :14:02.But I think he's trying too hard a lot of the time. He feels he is the

:14:02. > :14:05.captain, he needs to be doing more, and are probably lose Adam Ramsey

:14:05. > :14:10.as a player. But if you just concentrated on his own game, we

:14:10. > :14:16.will probably get more out of him. That was at a tough decision. I

:14:16. > :14:20.spoke with him yesterday and he was magnificent. He was very mature

:14:20. > :14:25.about it and I think it is the pressure lifted off home. So here

:14:25. > :14:33.is your new captain Christopher Hunnisett my new captain will be

:14:33. > :14:37.asked to -- who is your new captain? Ashley Williams. He has

:14:37. > :14:44.got enough experience on an international level. He is one of

:14:44. > :14:54.the best defenders. He has been since he has been in the Premier

:14:54. > :14:55.

:14:55. > :14:59.League. What is the latest on Craig Bellamy? Is he in or not? We have

:14:59. > :15:08.picked 21. There waiting for confirmation from Fifa about James

:15:08. > :15:13.Collins his suspension. What I don't want to do is pick him and

:15:13. > :15:17.then for him to play loud. How much of Craig Bellamy is about physical

:15:17. > :15:23.injury and how much is about what is going on in his head? He spoke

:15:23. > :15:27.candidly recently about the effect Gary Speed's death has had on him.

:15:27. > :15:37.Have you had that conversation with Cray? You can't physically makes

:15:37. > :15:37.

:15:37. > :15:44.somebody, and play. If Craig is ready and wants to continue, great.

:15:44. > :15:51.We welcome him. If he doesn't, like you said, he spoke very openly

:15:51. > :15:54.about one or two problems he has in his personal life, and if that is

:15:54. > :15:58.something he is trying to concentrate moron, and he feels

:15:58. > :16:03.coming away and playing international football is too much,

:16:03. > :16:13.then we have got to respect that. Either way, we need to say, right,

:16:13. > :16:27.

:16:27. > :16:33.which way are we going with Craig? Ever a game as a must win and it is

:16:33. > :16:37.almost a case of what happens next? I am not looking at it like that.

:16:37. > :16:43.Scotland is another game and a chance for us to win. Are you

:16:43. > :16:53.enjoying it or have you enjoyed it at all since he took over? I would

:16:53. > :16:54.

:16:54. > :17:00.not Colleter enjoyment. It has been tough. -- call it. Not because it

:17:00. > :17:10.is an international job but because of the circumstances. Thank you for

:17:10. > :17:11.

:17:11. > :17:14.talking to us. We wish you all the very best for the upcoming games.

:17:14. > :17:19.From international football to international rugby and in just

:17:19. > :17:24.over one month, up Wells's internationals get under way with a

:17:24. > :17:29.match against Argentina to this year joined the Southern hemisphere

:17:29. > :17:33.try Nations to create the Rugby Championship tournament. The Pumas

:17:33. > :17:38.are widely fancied to defeat the Wallabies who have had a less than

:17:38. > :17:48.successful year. An Australian legend came to South Wales this

:17:48. > :17:51.

:17:51. > :18:01.week. We cut up with David Campese. -- caught. David Campese, capped by

:18:01. > :18:02.

:18:02. > :18:12.the Wallabies 170 times between 1982 and 1986. Often absurdly

:18:12. > :18:16.

:18:16. > :18:26.brilliant. And occasionally slot. - - flawed. But 64 mostly inspired

:18:26. > :18:26.

:18:26. > :18:33.rise of an discredits the Diego Maradona other international rugby.

:18:33. > :18:35.When you pass, you pass the ball like this. David Campese was in the

:18:35. > :18:41.Vale of Glamorgan this week passing on his thoughts about how rugby

:18:41. > :18:50.should be quite a local school children. You are not the enemy,

:18:50. > :18:55.they are! The opposition! I have had a problem trying to coach in

:18:55. > :19:01.Australia but that is because people see me as outspoken. I love

:19:01. > :19:07.rugby and people have been over here talking to me, but things have

:19:07. > :19:12.moved on. You look at the current Australian side in the way things

:19:12. > :19:17.are going, and last season pretty much sums up how things are going

:19:17. > :19:27.for them. We have struggled in Australia because we have a Kiwi

:19:27. > :19:32.coach. He does that understand the way we play. He got rid of one of

:19:32. > :19:37.her best players because he did not like them, they did not get on. We

:19:37. > :19:44.struggled in the World Cup last year. I do not know where we sit

:19:44. > :19:52.into the game just now. I have been on at him week in and week out

:19:52. > :19:59.saying we need an Australian coach. Seeing some of the comments that

:19:59. > :20:04.have been made by Clare's, it is a toxic environment. For Cooper to

:20:04. > :20:09.see it is affecting his game... It is about the team. I got into

:20:09. > :20:14.trouble last World Cup because somebody interviewed me, and they

:20:14. > :20:20.criticised Cooper. He is a great player, a great individual, but he

:20:20. > :20:25.has to play as part of a team. I was a winner. I was the last man

:20:25. > :20:34.but he has a Number Ten. His comments would be taken more

:20:34. > :20:37.seriously if he was actually playing well but he has not been.

:20:37. > :20:42.We are one month away from Wales playing against you guys. Is it a

:20:42. > :20:46.good time for us to be playing? Look at it this way - if you cannot

:20:46. > :20:53.beat us something is wrong. You have had for Test matches and you

:20:53. > :20:58.have still struggled. If you cannot beat us this time, forget it. The

:20:58. > :21:03.thing that has always not amused me but that has been interesting is

:21:03. > :21:08.that when you play us, you give up to us. You play really well but

:21:08. > :21:11.then with other teams you do not play with the same enthusiasm. You

:21:11. > :21:19.have to play with that enthusiasm week in and week out. That is how

:21:19. > :21:25.you win and how you get respect. You look at the series of games

:21:25. > :21:28.Wales has coming up - Argentina, New Zealand and then the Wallabies

:21:28. > :21:33.- is that at a series of should they be looking for three

:21:33. > :21:37.victories? It depends what you want to get out of it. If you're looking

:21:37. > :21:42.for the next World Cup, then pick a team and say, this is what we are

:21:42. > :21:47.looking for her. It is no use chopping and changing. Argentina

:21:47. > :21:51.has learnt a lot. They have been built up well and they're not used

:21:51. > :21:56.to that. They're not used to playing rugby week in and week out

:21:56. > :22:03.but in a couple of years, they will understand the pressure and be

:22:03. > :22:13.better. Some more up, a very physical team and they know they

:22:13. > :22:17.

:22:17. > :22:22.can beat us. -- Samoa. Superbly done their by Leigh Halfpenny. Do

:22:22. > :22:28.you like that spell of weather? You need the guys outside to feed them

:22:28. > :22:34.the ball. When North comes up the wind, he is huge but give him the

:22:34. > :22:41.space to move and give him one-on- one opportunities. We've got some

:22:41. > :22:47.really talented players and Leigh Halfpenny is one of them. You have

:22:47. > :22:50.some really good players. Let them control and if that does not work,

:22:50. > :22:56.change. See if they can work it out for themselves, that is what rugby

:22:56. > :23:01.is all about. We turn our attention now back to football and to a

:23:01. > :23:07.player who would certainly have started again Scotland next week.

:23:07. > :23:10.The summer had started so well for Swansea City's Neil Taylor. Eye-

:23:10. > :23:19.catching performances for Team GB met Premier League clubs were

:23:19. > :23:24.rumoured to be ready to pounce. On 1st September, his world was

:23:24. > :23:34.shattered. Swansea City appear to have found some punch over the

:23:34. > :23:34.

:23:35. > :23:40.summer. Their passing style won many fans last summer. -- last

:23:40. > :23:44.season. Neil Taylor's and Cole was dislocated and broken. An injury so

:23:44. > :23:54.severe that he is likely to be out for the list of the season. His

:23:54. > :24:01.

:24:01. > :24:06.recovery has started already here It's horrible to think back on it.

:24:06. > :24:16.It is just one of those feet things that happens. I could not do

:24:16. > :24:22.anything about it. -- freak things. We had an orthopaedic specialist

:24:22. > :24:25.beside the pitch and he helped to put my ankle back in. That and

:24:25. > :24:30.another combination of things really helped me to stop it being

:24:30. > :24:36.worse. Up his rehab has been overseen by the club physio or Kate

:24:36. > :24:39.Rees, where he has five physiotherapy sessions a week.

:24:39. > :24:44.first couple of weeks there really hard where they had to lie down

:24:44. > :24:48.with my leg above me. It was really tough mentally watching the boys

:24:48. > :24:55.carry on playing. I have now been able to get back into training and

:24:55. > :24:58.be around the lads and it is easier. The Paralympics was on the

:24:58. > :25:03.television while I was lying in hospital and it was easier to watch

:25:03. > :25:07.people like that. It was inspiring because they have gone through much
