:00:19. > :00:23.Hello and welcome to the first Sport Wales of 2016 - yet another
:00:24. > :00:28.jam-packed year for Welsh sport and one which we'll be
:00:29. > :00:47.What is the message from the Swansea fans? He needs to put his hand in
:00:48. > :00:50.his pocket and help us out. As for the national team the Welsh players
:00:51. > :00:56.are feeling upbeat. We believe we can do something special. Christian
:00:57. > :01:02.Malcolm finds out what is cutting ahead of Rio. I have come to focus
:01:03. > :01:10.on the Welsh hopefuls for the Olympic Games. And Jazz Carlin means
:01:11. > :01:21.business. 12 hour days, a tireless pair weak. There is no easy way to
:01:22. > :01:27.win an Olympic medal. Lee Selby. I believe my brother could be the best
:01:28. > :01:32.Welsh boxer ever. And Lee Jenkins talks about his first cap 25 years
:01:33. > :01:37.ago. Something I will never ever forget. You have made it.
:01:38. > :01:40.But we start with the hangover from 2015 - Swansea City battling
:01:41. > :01:42.against relegation and still looking for a new manager.
:01:43. > :01:53.Ian Hunt has been finding out what's happened to the Swans.
:01:54. > :02:03.Swansea City. A shining example of how to run a Premier League club the
:02:04. > :02:07.right way. Part owned by the fans. Run by fans. Never threatened I
:02:08. > :02:12.relegation. Always prepared for any emergency.
:02:13. > :02:17.That is how it's used to be. That is how the club was viewed from the
:02:18. > :02:21.outside. What has gone wrong in recent months? Why this time was
:02:22. > :02:31.there no Plan B in place when things began to unravel? You cannot help
:02:32. > :02:36.but think this is very much unlike Swansea City. Here we are in the New
:02:37. > :02:41.Year. Only two victories since August. The club is in deep
:02:42. > :02:44.relegation trouble. After Leicester beat Swansea at the start of
:02:45. > :02:50.December as the great game over for a Garry Monk. Pressure was growing
:02:51. > :02:55.on chairman Hugh Jenkins. On the 9th of December Garry Monk was sacked.
:02:56. > :02:59.Alan Curtis was placed in temporary charge. With the likes of David
:03:00. > :03:03.Moyes and Brendan Rodgers appealing to pull themselves out of the
:03:04. > :03:08.chairman for to South America where it is believed he spoke to the
:03:09. > :03:14.former boss of Argentina and Chile but TV turned to Wales zero neither
:03:15. > :03:20.an appointment. But there was festive cheer with a victory against
:03:21. > :03:24.West Brom on Boxing Day. It seems the club had consolidated under Alan
:03:25. > :03:28.Curtis and on 7th of January he was placed in charge until the end of
:03:29. > :03:34.the season. For all office at is not the Swansea
:03:35. > :03:39.way. Hugh Jenkins always seems to have managerial Midas touch. He did
:03:40. > :03:43.not sack managers. He lost them when they got booed at the bottom
:03:44. > :03:48.somebody who was better. Not this time. Now it has a job nobody seems
:03:49. > :03:53.to want. Wednesday night. The mood among fans
:03:54. > :03:59.was about to get worse. Defeat to Sunderland left the club deep in
:04:00. > :04:04.relegation trouble. Swansea should not be in this position. We are
:04:05. > :04:08.struggling. What should the club do? Stick with Alan Curtis and spent a
:04:09. > :04:13.bit of money. You do not want to play pretty and lose. Hugh Jenkins
:04:14. > :04:24.needs to put his hand in his pocket and help us out. I am heartbroken. I
:04:25. > :04:28.am sorry. We asked Hugh Jenkins for an interview but he declined. In his
:04:29. > :04:32.statement on appointing Alan Curtis for the rest of the season he said
:04:33. > :04:36.they had spoken to a number of potential managers. Some do not want
:04:37. > :04:39.to leave their clubs at this stage of the season and others did not
:04:40. > :04:43.want to put their dedication on the line by joining a struggling side.
:04:44. > :04:48.Swansea do not know which division they will be in next season. That is
:04:49. > :04:53.a crucial factor. Hugh Jenkins hinted at it in his programme notes
:04:54. > :04:57.for the Sunderland game. He topped about financial uncertainty.
:04:58. > :05:01.Difficult for the club to commit a long contract to a high earning
:05:02. > :05:06.manager bearing in mind that it could be that they are not in the
:05:07. > :05:09.Premier League come the summer. Whenever they have got rid of it
:05:10. > :05:14.manager they have always quickly brought someone in to fill that gap.
:05:15. > :05:18.This is not the case for one reason or another. I do not think when they
:05:19. > :05:25.got rid of Garry Monk the plan was to give the job to Alan Curtis until
:05:26. > :05:29.the end of the season. No pressure on Alan Curtis but relegation would
:05:30. > :05:34.prove more costly than ever. Costly to the tune of ?81 million. That is
:05:35. > :05:38.what each club stands to get next season from the eye watering new TV
:05:39. > :05:45.deal. Assuming they survive, who might Swansea turn to in the summer?
:05:46. > :05:50.David Moyes appears to be one of the early favourites. Appointed as Alex
:05:51. > :05:54.Ferguson's successor as artist United things did not work out for
:05:55. > :05:56.him at Old Trafford or in Spain and he was quick to rule himself out of
:05:57. > :06:10.the job. Bielsa was manager of Argentina and
:06:11. > :06:16.Chile. Brendan Rodgers, after leading
:06:17. > :06:22.Liverpool to second in the Premier League, his financial expectations
:06:23. > :06:27.are one possible stumbling block. And what about Ryan Giggs? A one
:06:28. > :06:32.club man, he is being tipped as the next manager of Manchester United.
:06:33. > :06:35.Taking over at Swansea looks a long shot.
:06:36. > :06:40.They could be in the bottom three by the time they face Watford here on
:06:41. > :06:44.Monday. Who would be Alan Curtis? 17 days left to save Swansea and ensure
:06:45. > :06:48.their fifth year in the Premier League is not the last.
:06:49. > :06:50.On the International stage, the countdown to Euro 2016 has
:06:51. > :06:53.begun, and we've been to meet one of the key members
:06:54. > :07:00.Hal Robson-Kanu plays his club football for Championship club,
:07:01. > :07:17.Reading, and we sent former Wales striker Iwan Roberts to meet him.
:07:18. > :07:28.Thought you had scored the winning goal. It was not to be. But you have
:07:29. > :07:33.got a replay. Could be a chance to start another cup run this year. Of
:07:34. > :07:38.course. Last year they cap run was potassic for the club and the
:07:39. > :07:42.players. We showed what we could do. We got to Wembley which was an
:07:43. > :07:49.un-believable occasion for the fans and the club. 2016 is finally here.
:07:50. > :07:55.I am excited. How excited are you at the prospect of what will happen to
:07:56. > :08:00.you in June? The anticipation is sometimes unbearable. It is what we
:08:01. > :08:05.have worked for. It has been our ambition to be performing at that
:08:06. > :08:09.level and competing at that level. With you 2016 coming up we believe
:08:10. > :08:15.we can do something special. It is no secret that you are a huge fan of
:08:16. > :08:22.Chris Coleman. Can you explain how good a job he has done? He is
:08:23. > :08:26.phenomenal. He has taken the mantle and put his own mark on things. He
:08:27. > :08:35.has taken the nation forward again. I cannot speak highly enough of him.
:08:36. > :08:48.Long may it continue. Explain to people your family connections in
:08:49. > :08:53.Wales. My grandmother was born in Caerphilly and wanted me to play for
:08:54. > :08:58.Wales. England came calling first. I prefer them at youth level. Brian
:08:59. > :09:03.Flynn knocked on my door. He said we have got a group of young players
:09:04. > :09:08.that if you are part of we can achieve something. I sat down with
:09:09. > :09:12.my family and to the delight of my grandmother I said there is no
:09:13. > :09:17.reason why I should not. To be a great opportunity and I made a
:09:18. > :09:21.decision to switch to Wales. June 16 you play England. There will be no
:09:22. > :09:29.sports loyalties. They will all be wearing the Welsh red shirt.
:09:30. > :09:32.Correct. My partner as Scottish. My child with her is half Scottish.
:09:33. > :09:44.They will all be wearing Welsh shirts on the day.
:09:45. > :09:49.You are a firm favourite with the Welsh fans. You have got your
:09:50. > :10:03.status. They have got a special song for you.
:10:04. > :10:12.Just a message to wish you all the very best in France. We will see you
:10:13. > :10:16.there. Brilliant. Looking at the build up
:10:17. > :10:22.now. Couple of friendlies in March against Ukraine and Northern
:10:23. > :10:28.Ireland. How important are these preparations going to be? Massively
:10:29. > :10:33.important. The manager and his staff have been preparing right. As
:10:34. > :10:38.players it is important that we turn up from March. What are your hopes
:10:39. > :10:44.and ambitions for this year? Every year you want to continue to
:10:45. > :10:50.progress. You want to have great moments in your career. Going into
:10:51. > :10:56.2016 there are some fantastic occasions coming up. I am looking
:10:57. > :11:01.forward to being ready for them. And we will be meeting at with other
:11:02. > :11:03.members of the squad between now and the start of the tournament.
:11:04. > :11:06.Another big event taking place this summer is the Olympic Games
:11:07. > :11:09.in Rio, so our very own golden boy, Christian Malcolm selects his Welsh
:11:10. > :11:25.This summer all eyes will be focused on the Olympic Games in Rio.
:11:26. > :11:28.This is Barry Island. Not quite corporate cabana beach but I have
:11:29. > :11:34.come to focus on the Welsh hopefuls for the Olympic Games.
:11:35. > :11:45.Entire four we could have two Welsh ladies. Non Stanford has qualified.
:11:46. > :11:51.In 2012 Non Stanford was a newcomer, by 2013 she was world champion. In
:11:52. > :11:55.2014 she admitted she did not get preparations connect. In 2015 she
:11:56. > :12:05.has qualified for the Olympics. In 2016 I think she will be ready.
:12:06. > :12:10.Having won the team pursuit in 2008 and 2012 Geraint Thomas is a
:12:11. > :12:18.decorated Olympian. The two would advance will be a main focus as he
:12:19. > :12:27.walks to assist Chris Froome. After which Geraint Thomas could be in his
:12:28. > :12:33.element on the hilly roads of Rio. Seren Bundy-Davies had an excellent
:12:34. > :12:39.season last year. Top of the season with a World Championship bronze. It
:12:40. > :12:43.will be tough. She has an outside chance of making the final. Even
:12:44. > :12:48.major has to try and make the team. But for the really I am sure she
:12:49. > :12:57.will be in there. There we she anchors the team home last year she
:12:58. > :13:06.has to be certain. Holding on for a bronze for Great Britain.
:13:07. > :13:12.There are two Welsh girls looking to shine on the water. Vicky Thornley
:13:13. > :13:18.will be paired with Katherine Grainger who won gold in 2012. They
:13:19. > :13:23.are quickest in their field individually but can they come
:13:24. > :13:32.together as appear to win a medal at Rio? Second is Hannah Mills. She won
:13:33. > :13:36.a silver in London. She only partnered Saskia Clark for ten
:13:37. > :13:45.months. For use training, does that mean golf is on the rise in? After
:13:46. > :13:51.missing selection in 2012 Natalie Powell has her sights set on 2016.
:13:52. > :13:57.In 2014 she was a star of the Welsh team in the column of Games by
:13:58. > :14:05.taking gold. Who could forget Jade Jones? The golden girl. She said she
:14:06. > :14:11.struggled after that. But since then she has got her confidence back. She
:14:12. > :14:15.looks ready. Last time round there was no expectations. Before 2012
:14:16. > :14:19.nobody had heard of Jade Jones and she came out with a medal. This time
:14:20. > :14:23.around she will go in as defending champion and one of the favourites.
:14:24. > :14:30.She backs herself to win again and so do life. Those are some of my
:14:31. > :14:35.predictions. And for the rest of the Welsh athletes, good luck.
:14:36. > :14:38.Well, another person aiming for Gold in Rio is swimmer Jazz Carlin.
:14:39. > :14:40.No one claims that winning an Olympic medal comes easy,
:14:41. > :14:43.but some have to work harder than others.
:14:44. > :15:01.Here's a day, a very long day, in the life of an Olympic hopeful.
:15:02. > :15:13.Four years ago, I was absolutely gutted not to be on the Olympic team
:15:14. > :15:19.and it was tough. I nearly walked away from the sport.
:15:20. > :15:29.But I thought, you know what, I have got something left - I want to give
:15:30. > :15:34.it one last go. We're still this building until 8pm
:15:35. > :15:39.tonight, that is when Jazz will finish. She has a full day and four
:15:40. > :15:47.sessions to complete until then. It is full on. Let's go... Come on! And
:15:48. > :15:51.breathe. Working hard. Right until the end! We need to leave no stone
:15:52. > :15:57.unturned in our pursuit of that medal for her. She needs to be fit
:15:58. > :16:07.and strong, and have a number of attributes. Three, two, one... Rest.
:16:08. > :16:15.Well done! That's you done now. Day done,
:16:16. > :16:21.finished? I wish. I moved to Bath at the end of 2014. This is the
:16:22. > :16:26.national centre for Great Britain. Swansea used to be a national
:16:27. > :16:33.centre. I get on really well with David McNulty, so I thought I would
:16:34. > :16:42.give it a try here. Hold the line. To your box...
:16:43. > :16:56.Jazz got in the pool at 8am and she will swim until about 10am this
:16:57. > :17:01.morning. She will probably cover 7500 metres. This week she will
:17:02. > :17:06.average 70-80,000 for the week. Swimming is tough and when you do
:17:07. > :17:11.the amount of metres Jazz is doing it takes a special person. Not
:17:12. > :17:18.everybody can do it, I don't mean physically, I mean mentally. I have
:17:19. > :17:22.just finished my gym and swim for the morning. I am having breakfast,
:17:23. > :17:27.refuelling and back to bed, I think. Back to bed? Back to bed. I always
:17:28. > :17:31.need to recover between sessions. I have not swim and gym later on. It
:17:32. > :17:39.is a full-on day. I need to get in as much rest as possible.
:17:40. > :17:46.Training here and everything is organised. We get sent a weekly plan
:17:47. > :17:51.of what we need to do. It is a full on day. I am tired most of the time.
:17:52. > :17:57.It is not the most glamorous lifestyle. I would not have it any
:17:58. > :18:02.other way. I love what I do. She's had a tough day today. We have a
:18:03. > :18:09.race model we would like her to do in Rio. Tonight we have all of the
:18:10. > :18:13.race pace on target. How is that going Jazz? Last 100. Spot on! I
:18:14. > :18:17.don't want to take anything for granted. I don't want to say I'm on
:18:18. > :18:23.the team, I am definitely not. There are a lot of people fighting for
:18:24. > :18:30.spots. The first stepping stone is making the team. We will put 2. 12
:18:31. > :18:34.behind us. -- 2012 behind us. She's a European
:18:35. > :18:38.and Commonwealth champion. We are not just going to the Olympics to
:18:39. > :18:42.make the final or enjoy it, we are going there to bring some medals
:18:43. > :18:46.home. Obviously as your coach he's got every confidence in you, but it
:18:47. > :18:48.is about the Olympic trials for me first. I will obviously keep my feet
:18:49. > :19:00.on the ground and see how it goes. So it is 7pm now and we are at the
:19:01. > :19:04.end of a long training day and Jazz is doing her key strength focus
:19:05. > :19:11.session. We will be here until going on 8pm. Probably doing a good earner
:19:12. > :19:16.and the S and C work. Squeeze up. This is a long day. It is a 13-hour
:19:17. > :19:21.training day. Jazz will be back home probably 8. 30pm. She will refuel
:19:22. > :19:25.and relaxing before starting again tomorrow. This is what it takes to
:19:26. > :19:33.make it to the Olympics and compete with the best in the world.
:19:34. > :19:38.There's no easy way to win an Olympic medal. 12-hour days, six
:19:39. > :19:40.days a week, 80kms a week. There's no short cuts. You have to give it
:19:41. > :19:51.everything. Now, 2016 promises to be a really
:19:52. > :19:55.exciting year for the Selby family. Andrew has started on his path
:19:56. > :19:59.towards becoming world champion and his brother, Lee, well, he's already
:20:00. > :20:05.there, at the top of the tree and knows all about the Welsh greats
:20:06. > :20:10.that he's following. To really appreciate your sport you
:20:11. > :20:14.must know the history. I follow my boxing history,
:20:15. > :20:19.especially Welsh boxing. My brother boxes too. He's a professional now.
:20:20. > :20:23.He boxed in the Olympics and represented Great Britain. My father
:20:24. > :20:29.claims he boxes, but there's no evidence and his father boxed too.
:20:30. > :20:32.There's been 11 more champions before me and I am the 12th world
:20:33. > :20:39.champion. The first Welsh man to win a world
:20:40. > :20:45.le was Percy Jones. He won that in 1914. He was born on boxing day,
:20:46. > :20:52.funnily enough. Next up was Freddie Welsh. They called him the Welsh
:20:53. > :20:56.Wizard. He was born in Pontypridd but made his name in America. Next
:20:57. > :21:03.up was the Ghost with the hammer in his hand. He learnt his trade and
:21:04. > :21:07.the boxing moves. January 1968 Howard Winston was world champion.
:21:08. > :21:12.Despite hurting his hand in a factory accident, he lost one of his
:21:13. > :21:18.fingers, he became feather weight champion. On to the 90s, Steve
:21:19. > :21:24.Robinson. The Cinderella Man. When he sat here eating pies and chips,
:21:25. > :21:30.gets a phone call, two days later, he's world champion. The hardest
:21:31. > :21:39.part of boxing is the sparring. Robbie region. He was the best at
:21:40. > :21:42.it. -- Regan. He was the best at it. Freddie Jones, superflyweight
:21:43. > :21:49.champion. Despite punching power, he proved you can become world champion
:21:50. > :21:59.on boxing of ability alone. Calzaki. Undefeated, a retired world
:22:00. > :22:04.champion. Say no more. Enzo Macanelly he could punch.
:22:05. > :22:15.Gavin Reese. He had one of the best jabs in the busy. Nathan Cleverly,
:22:16. > :22:19.as intelligent in the ring as out. Next up, what will I say about
:22:20. > :22:24.myself? One of the hardest working boxers in the sported. I never give
:22:25. > :22:29.up. I stay focussed. I am determined and I find a way to win. I have
:22:30. > :22:36.proven my worth for Great Britain. Now I want to establish my name on
:22:37. > :22:39.the world scene. You look at some of the past fighters that went to
:22:40. > :22:46.America at the latter part of his career. I heard him say he wished he
:22:47. > :22:50.did it sooner. I am doing it now. Have my defence out there and I will
:22:51. > :22:55.go to America and try to build my name. The 13th world champion, I
:22:56. > :23:00.believe will be my younger brother, Andrew Selby. I believe he could be
:23:01. > :23:05.the best Welsh boxer ever. It is a big claim, but I have been watching
:23:06. > :23:15.boxing from eight, 10 years of age and he's one of the mostal lented
:23:16. > :23:20.box - most talented I have seen. Lee's next opponent will be Eric
:23:21. > :23:25.Hunter. Good luck to Lee and Andrew in 2016. Now, there are just three
:23:26. > :23:31.weeks to go until the start of this year's Six Nations. And it is a
:23:32. > :23:35.special anniversary for a former player who made his Wales debut 25
:23:36. > :23:41.years ago. We sent Martyn Williams to catch up with an old friend.
:23:42. > :23:49.I have come back to a very special place which holds fond memories for
:23:50. > :23:53.myself. I will meet an old team-mate here today.
:23:54. > :24:05.Here he is... Doing all right, Sir? Good to see you. Good to be back. It
:24:06. > :24:10.hasn't changed much, has it? Not at all. Nothing has changed.
:24:11. > :24:14.Everything's in the same position. I've had some fantastic times in
:24:15. > :24:18.here. We had some good times in her. We
:24:19. > :24:25.had some fantastic times. Good times in here. We had some
:24:26. > :24:47.fantastic times. It is 25 years this year that you
:24:48. > :24:52.got your first cap, famously you and Scott Gibbs. 19 years, running out
:24:53. > :24:54.against England. Can you remember much of it? As you would, your first
:24:55. > :24:59.cap. You think, I am a player. much of it? As you would, your first
:25:00. > :25:04.lump in your throat, playing against England. The other side, you think,
:25:05. > :25:08.here we go. It was proper rugby and proper stuff. It is reality, it is
:25:09. > :25:12.when you run out, it is like yes! You have made it. You've done it. It
:25:13. > :25:17.is something I will never, ever forget.
:25:18. > :25:28.It is always an ambition to play for Wales. Up there, as we both know, is
:25:29. > :25:37.the very first one, which we wanted to explain. On the front of it is
:25:38. > :25:42.Neily, Neily. For my mum and dad, they thought, what can we get him
:25:43. > :25:48.for his 18th birthday. Having one made might cost an arm and leg. That
:25:49. > :25:54.is what they gave me for my 18th birthday. My old man messing about.
:25:55. > :26:00.One of the best presents I have ever had.
:26:01. > :26:03.Unbelievable international career. Over 1,000 points. 87 caps. One
:26:04. > :26:10.moment that stands out for you in all that? It is difficult to look
:26:11. > :26:15.past '99, it was at Wembley. Still in London. That was a ridiculous
:26:16. > :26:19.day, that was. Obviously for us to beat them it was a special day
:26:20. > :26:27.really. And that, if I am honest, will probably take some beating.
:26:28. > :26:34.Ironic, we mention you and Gibbs and Gibbs scored the try.
:26:35. > :26:40.Scott Gibbs has scored. What an amazing try. I remember Gibbsie
:26:41. > :26:45.doing all that. I thought get yourself under the post.
:26:46. > :26:49.I realised we were still behind. Scott, don't do that! Touch down for
:26:50. > :26:54.the try. It was not right in front of the sticks? Probably one of the
:26:55. > :26:58.easiest for that level for something on the line, probably. Your mind
:26:59. > :27:05.goes to your jogging hand, kicking the goal and making sure we get in
:27:06. > :27:13.front. What wrould you want to kick this in world rugby? That man.
:27:14. > :27:20.I would probably have been lynched. Of all of the goals he's kicked in
:27:21. > :27:26.his life, this will lift the roof. An incredible atmosphere. An
:27:27. > :27:33.incredible way to finish the Five Nations. For you, what was the best
:27:34. > :27:37.highlight at this ground? It is difficult to pick a game. Grown up,
:27:38. > :27:40.you probably said it earlier about the changing room, being nervous.
:27:41. > :27:48.That would be the start of it. Especially as a young kid and
:27:49. > :27:51.knowing what is around you. And the old school wonder test. If you were
:27:52. > :27:55.not together you would get it in the ear. I think that alone was probably
:27:56. > :28:00.a special place to be in the changing rooms before we came out.
:28:01. > :28:04.Chief obviously walking around about being aggressive.
:28:05. > :28:08.It was a scary place, if you were a young kid and not sure what is to
:28:09. > :28:12.come. Coming out here and I think, for me, it is what it was all about,
:28:13. > :28:18.playing for the Jersey, for the team. There are no prima donnas. It
:28:19. > :28:22.didn't matter who you played for, you came back and your feet were on
:28:23. > :28:28.the ground. There was one thing and one thing only and that was to
:28:29. > :28:34.represent Pontypridd and play for the shirt. That is it for this week.
:28:35. > :28:36.We are on at 7pm next Friday. From the Sport Wales team, have a good
:28:37. > :28:45.weekend.
