:00:25. > :00:30.Hello, and welcome to the programme on the eve of Wales's autumn
:00:30. > :00:35.international against the World Cup holders, New Zealand. Will it be a
:00:35. > :00:39.6th consecutive defeat, or can Warren Gatland fire them up for an
:00:39. > :00:46.historic win over the mighty All Blacks? That and plenty more
:00:46. > :00:49.besides so stay with us. After losing to Argentina in at --
:00:49. > :00:53.Argentina and Samoa, Sam Warburton understand the frustrations of the
:00:53. > :00:58.supporters. If I was a fan, and would be upset with the last two
:00:58. > :01:02.performances as well. An away win at Newcastle, next at Swansea hope
:01:02. > :01:07.-- host Liverpool and their former boss.
:01:07. > :01:13.And we speak to Roger speed, a year after the passing of his son,
:01:13. > :01:16.former Wales boss, Gary Speed. know, you don't believe it. We
:01:17. > :01:22.still don't believe it, we are still wondering why a. He had the
:01:22. > :01:26.world at his feet. First, it is rugby. And after a
:01:26. > :01:30.disappointing start to their autumn series with defeats against
:01:30. > :01:35.Argentina and then Samoa, Wales now get ready for their toughest test
:01:35. > :01:40.yet as they face world champions New Zealand here tomorrow. We have
:01:40. > :01:43.been assessing their preparations. This was not the plan. Having
:01:43. > :01:46.dominated Europe in the spring, and got within a whisker to Australia
:01:46. > :01:51.in the summer, autumn was meant to be the season when Wales meant the
:01:51. > :01:56.leap to their top table of London - - rugby by beating the big guns.
:01:56. > :02:00.They were not supposed to stumble at the first two hurdles. It is all
:02:00. > :02:04.going horribly wrong for Wales. I was a fan, I would be upset with
:02:04. > :02:08.the performances as well. I can understand why people are upset.
:02:08. > :02:13.The players want to make sure we can put it right. There most of his
:02:13. > :02:19.place to point the finger is the top, but with Wales, things are
:02:19. > :02:25.complicated. A sabbatical for rhyme Gatland gave Rob Howley the chance
:02:25. > :02:30.to be the boss but for Warren Gatland is back. I came in and I
:02:30. > :02:35.put my arms up and I said, the Messiah is back! A couple of tater
:02:35. > :02:40.it -- caterers turned around and said, go away! It is exactly the
:02:40. > :02:45.result I wanted. I do not know how many differences I would have made
:02:45. > :02:50.over the last few weeks, we just have to laugh. I hope it shows that
:02:50. > :02:56.we are a close group. So was Rob Howley in total control before the
:02:56. > :03:01.Argentina and Samoa games? And how involved was Warren Gatland? I saw
:03:01. > :03:08.a couple and afternoon sessions for the Argentina, I was not involved
:03:08. > :03:12.with Samoa. I have spoken to rob and we have spoken and I have seen
:03:12. > :03:16.what his thoughts are, it was important that had an input. I was
:03:16. > :03:20.able to support them as much as I could. Now that Warren is back, it
:03:20. > :03:24.is a massive influence on a lot of the players and the management team.
:03:24. > :03:30.It seems like everything is back in place for the next two games.
:03:30. > :03:33.Winning his 10% physical and 90% mental, according to the old adage.
:03:33. > :03:38.The current squad are as physically fit as any who have pulled on a red
:03:38. > :03:42.shirt, so is it a case of complacency? I do not think it has
:03:42. > :03:52.been a physical or game thing, it is mentally, we are not quite as
:03:52. > :03:54.sharp as we were. Baby that is a little bit, sometimes the players
:03:55. > :03:58.are thinking they have achieved something in the last 12 months,
:03:58. > :04:02.the pressure is off, they are not on edge as much as they should have
:04:02. > :04:06.been for those first couple of games. I do not think there has
:04:06. > :04:12.been lapses in mental states of the players or anything like that. But
:04:13. > :04:15.I know coming into the camp this Monday, everyone was really excited.
:04:15. > :04:19.We had to figure out the game recently and find out what went
:04:19. > :04:23.wrong, but we are looking forward to the game on Saturday, we are
:04:23. > :04:26.full of confidence. The effective game-plan that has served Wales so
:04:26. > :04:31.well in the past seems to be faltering. Have they become too
:04:31. > :04:35.one-dimensional? In terms of being one-dimensional, I think that
:04:35. > :04:39.criticism could have been posed at me when I first arrived. We were
:04:39. > :04:43.quite structured in the way that we played, but we have differed in the
:04:43. > :04:46.last year or so, we have tried to give players more responsibility to
:04:46. > :04:50.play what is in front of them, move the ball if they have felt that
:04:50. > :04:55.moving the ball in our twenties he was on, to have the confidence to
:04:55. > :05:01.do that and changed the attacking structures. We have tried to
:05:01. > :05:03.implement that. Next it is the world champions and Wales will be
:05:03. > :05:08.without winner George North. Form and history suggests another all-
:05:08. > :05:12.black victory. One of the things that surprise me against the All
:05:12. > :05:15.Blacks is that they are a fantastic group of players, great athletes
:05:15. > :05:18.but they are not the biggest players in the world. We saw the
:05:19. > :05:22.periods when Scotland had them under pressure, they were able to
:05:22. > :05:27.keep the ball and retain possession. That is what we have to get to do
:05:27. > :05:31.in the weekend, get a big ball carriers, our second rows, wingers
:05:31. > :05:35.and midfield running and indirect. Looking to retain as much position
:05:35. > :05:40.as we can. You do not become a good team overnight, but to do not
:05:40. > :05:43.become a bad team either. I am hoping we have got a good
:05:43. > :05:48.performance and we can do that on Saturday.
:05:48. > :05:53.Less than 24 hours to go, until the big game. The New Zealanders are in
:05:53. > :05:59.town and among them, a shy and retiring soul that Welsh fans have
:05:59. > :06:03.taken to heart. Very pleased to welcome former All Blacks captain
:06:03. > :06:07.Justin Marshall. Welcome to Wales again. It is good to be back, thank
:06:07. > :06:11.you for that kind welcome! What could be made of the autumn so far,
:06:11. > :06:15.a dramatic fall from grace. It has not been great. To be honest, New
:06:15. > :06:18.Zealand have paid them a huge compliment. They targeted this game
:06:19. > :06:21.as being the most difficult -- difficult. They have based their
:06:21. > :06:25.tour around it, hit their stride for the Wales game. Since then,
:06:25. > :06:29.Wales suffered some losses but in saying that, they are getting some
:06:29. > :06:32.players back which helps them. Confidence is massive in sport. You
:06:32. > :06:36.would have to say that that confidence is going to be lacking
:06:36. > :06:40.given the recent results. Warren Gatland just said in that piece,
:06:40. > :06:44.perhaps some of the youngsters have experienced the highs of the Grand
:06:44. > :06:48.Slam, perhaps there was a bit of complacency. Do you agree with
:06:48. > :06:53.that? It is difficult when you're playing teams that you are expected
:06:53. > :06:57.to win. As players you have got to adjust to being the favourite and
:06:57. > :07:02.performing like favourites, and they have not performed. They are
:07:02. > :07:05.not playing a kite -- kind of rugby they are capable of. Everyone who
:07:05. > :07:10.supports Wales can see that. Expectation has Whiddon Down, but I
:07:10. > :07:14.don't agree with the fact that it is youngsters. Youngsters are
:07:14. > :07:17.involved in any match. It is just the effect that favouritism and
:07:17. > :07:21.expectation has stopped them playing the top rugby they know how
:07:21. > :07:25.to play. Can Warren Gatland coming backing for this match instil
:07:25. > :07:29.confidence into the Wales players? Do you expect things to improve?
:07:29. > :07:32.do think they will improve. A capability in this team has not
:07:32. > :07:36.been shown in the last few weeks in particular. I think they can get
:07:36. > :07:40.the performance, yes, but the problem for them is the results. In
:07:40. > :07:43.the last couple of weeks, that is not going to get them to the level
:07:43. > :07:48.the All Blacks are at at the moment, they are playing grade rugby.
:07:48. > :07:53.will take a look at your boys very shortly. Now, it is almost exactly
:07:53. > :07:58.a year since the world of football was left stunned by the death of
:07:58. > :08:04.Gary Speed at the age of just 42. So what have the last 12 months
:08:04. > :08:08.been like for Gary's family? We have been speaking to Gary's dad
:08:08. > :08:16.Roger, while friends and colleagues reflect on an awful day they will
:08:16. > :08:19.never forget. We interrupt this programme here on
:08:19. > :08:28.BBC Radio Wales with the news that the football world is stunned
:08:28. > :08:31.because the Wales manager at Gary Speed has died at the age of 42.
:08:31. > :08:37.think it was that much of a shock, you do things and you don't realise
:08:37. > :08:41.what you doing. Until you sit down for five minutes, then you think,
:08:41. > :08:47.oh, God. I don't believe it. You don't believe it. We still don't
:08:47. > :08:55.believe it. We are still wondering why a, he had the world at his feet.
:08:55. > :09:01.So... It has been a struggle. It has been a howler that 12 months. -
:09:01. > :09:05.- it has been a hell of a 12 months. They still wonder why, football
:09:05. > :09:12.still wonders why. Still pays its respects, mourns the loss of a
:09:12. > :09:18.great football man. It is overwhelming, the tributes we have
:09:18. > :09:24.had. All corners of the globe, Australia, Africa, New Zealand,
:09:24. > :09:30.America. Canada. People we don't know. They even sent a slappers.
:09:30. > :09:34.They addressed the letter Mr and Mrs Speed, Gary's parents, no
:09:34. > :09:38.address, they posted it like that and we got it through the post. I
:09:38. > :09:47.have got a couple of bin bags for, I have kept all of the letters. It
:09:47. > :09:51.is tough. Even in morning, the game of football goes on, and it went on,
:09:51. > :09:58.at the very day that Gary Speed passed away. The game barely
:09:58. > :10:02.mattered. This was the football world united in grief and disbelief.
:10:02. > :10:06.How hard was it to actually play a game of football after you have
:10:06. > :10:10.just heard that a few hours ago? was really hard, I don't remember
:10:10. > :10:14.anything about the game. If you asked me a highlight, I could not
:10:14. > :10:18.have the one thing. I think the game was so secondary that day. No
:10:18. > :10:26.one really wanted to play, and yet the fans, the atmosphere, they felt
:10:26. > :10:30.the same way. It was one of the toughest games I have ever played.
:10:30. > :10:36.Three months later, and the team Speed had led had to begin life
:10:36. > :10:39.against him -- without him. A tribute game against Costa Rica,
:10:39. > :10:42.and a night of unbearable emotion for his family. Again the game
:10:42. > :10:45.itself seemed irrelevant, on the night when the players and all
:10:45. > :10:55.those former team-mate and colleagues off Gary's had Tivoli
:10:55. > :10:56.
:10:56. > :11:01.listened to his teenage son give a speech. When Ed got up and spoke in
:11:01. > :11:06.front of all those people, that made my day. Fantastic. Can you
:11:06. > :11:15.remember what he said? Me and granddad Roger. We will carry on.
:11:15. > :11:21.We will do it for that, he said. That gets me, it really gets me.
:11:21. > :11:25.was not about the game of football. It was not about, this is the make
:11:25. > :11:29.-- next stage and so on. It was about people getting together and a
:11:29. > :11:34.drawing strength from each other, to help each other through this
:11:34. > :11:36.difficult time. And the players, despite all the well in the world,
:11:36. > :11:41.could not perform on the night physically, they were drained
:11:41. > :11:46.because of the emotional state they were in. So it became a non-
:11:46. > :11:49.football event as far as I'm concerned. Things were starting to
:11:49. > :11:53.happen for Speed, he had won four of his nice -- last five games in
:11:53. > :11:58.charge. There was will promise of what might lie ahead for Wales,
:11:58. > :12:03.what he might achieve as a coach. The great thing about Gary was, he
:12:03. > :12:06.knows he was not the end product. He was certainly going that way,
:12:06. > :12:12.but he was always saying, remember, tell me if I am doing something
:12:12. > :12:15.wrong or you think it should be done differently. He was always
:12:15. > :12:22.seeking advice, that is one of the things he wanted me therefore,
:12:23. > :12:27.probably. So he was always aiming for perfection. Something like this
:12:27. > :12:31.will always be a void, it will be a major piece in our history,
:12:31. > :12:34.unfortunately. But that is the reality and we need to insure that
:12:34. > :12:38.we pay it then it appropriate respects that it has -- deserves,
:12:38. > :12:43.that Gary and his family deserve. At some point we also have to pick
:12:43. > :12:47.up the pieces, we did have to think after the event, where do we go now,
:12:47. > :12:52.what do we do? Of course I was delighted when Gary's friend,
:12:52. > :12:57.former colleague Andrew made was prepared to tread Pickup the pieces.
:12:57. > :13:01.-- and room-mate. Some said it was an impossible job for Chris Coleman
:13:01. > :13:06.and preserving speed's legacy has proved tough. Claims that the
:13:06. > :13:10.momentum of 12 months ago have gone. We took England to the wire at
:13:10. > :13:15.Wembley when Robert Earnshaw missed that chance, we were playing great
:13:15. > :13:18.stuff, moving up the world rankings. The future was so great for him and
:13:18. > :13:21.the waste that Wales were playing such attractive football, I thought
:13:22. > :13:29.that with Gary, we would have a great chance of qualifying. I don't
:13:29. > :13:34.think Walsh report has recovered. Everyone has their opinions, we are
:13:34. > :13:39.still doing a lot of the backroom staff, our philosophy is still the
:13:39. > :13:43.same. I suggest they have been changes but not fundamental changes.
:13:43. > :13:46.Ultimately, yes, people have only got so much patience. Of course,
:13:46. > :13:52.winning ways must return. We must play more competitively and win
:13:52. > :13:58.more, that is the game wherein. While the game goes on, memories of
:13:58. > :14:03.Gary Speed, frozen in time, cherish always. I have got my computer, a
:14:03. > :14:07.picture of him there on my computer, the screen saver. On my phone, on
:14:07. > :14:12.Carol's phone, pictures. So we see him and talk to him every day, I
:14:12. > :14:22.think it is good. And things like this, this is helping me through.
:14:22. > :14:30.
:14:30. > :14:34.Talking about it. You have got to Sad news this week, with the
:14:34. > :14:38.passing of former Manchester United player Kenny Morgans. One of the
:14:38. > :14:44.Busby Babes, that survived the Munich air disaster. Kenny Morgans
:14:44. > :14:48.was just 16 when he left Swansea to play for Manchester United. He made
:14:48. > :14:53.his first-team debut aged 18, going on to establish himself in the side
:14:53. > :14:57.that was to become known as the Busby Babes. He survived the Munich
:14:57. > :15:01.air disaster in 1958. His unconscious body was pulled out of
:15:01. > :15:05.the plane five hours after the official search was called off.
:15:05. > :15:15.After making 23 appearances for United, he returned home to Wales
:15:15. > :15:22.
:15:22. > :15:27.to play for both Swansea City and There will be tributes to Kenny
:15:27. > :15:32.Morgans at all the Liberty Stadium and Old Trafford this weekend.
:15:32. > :15:38.After the disappointment of Helen Jenkins battling through injury to
:15:38. > :15:43.finish death at this year's Olympics, the latest Welsh
:15:43. > :15:51.triathlete to make a stamp on the world stage. We went to speak to
:15:51. > :15:56.her about her rise to the under 23 world title. Born and raised in
:15:56. > :16:01.Swansea, she has been winning medals from a tender age. Whether
:16:02. > :16:06.in the pool or dry land, she excelled through her school days.
:16:06. > :16:11.The four time winner of the London Mini Marathon is note under 23
:16:11. > :16:17.world triathlon champion. My first sporting memory is when I was
:16:17. > :16:23.really young, gymnastics. I asked my mum if I would ever go to the
:16:23. > :16:32.Olympics for gymnastics and she said no. It is pretty harsh but it
:16:32. > :16:36.save time. When I was 12 or 13 I started running. It was not until
:16:36. > :16:42.my second year of university I tried to give Praf won a gold. I
:16:42. > :16:48.had been injured and I wanted a different focus to keep me fit. --
:16:48. > :16:54.I decided to try ape the triathlon. That was my first training and it
:16:54. > :17:00.has gone from there. Kelly Holmes spotted her talent and to Kirk to
:17:00. > :17:07.South Africa to develop her skills as a middle-distance runner.
:17:07. > :17:13.supported my transition from athletics, and still to this day is
:17:13. > :17:18.there and if I need to speak to her, I would add credit much of what I
:17:18. > :17:24.learned to her. You train with the Brownlee brothers. What is that
:17:24. > :17:27.like? Fantastic. The support staff and coaching staff are brilliant,
:17:27. > :17:31.and I have the best training partners in the world in the
:17:31. > :17:36.Brownlee brothers. They always offer guidance and advice. That is
:17:36. > :17:41.why I made a leap forward. You were down at the Olympics watching Helen
:17:41. > :17:45.Jenkins. Has she been something to aim for? She is one of the nicest
:17:45. > :17:48.people I've ever met, she's been a good friend and helped me all the
:17:48. > :17:56.way. She always gives me good advice and is a fantastic role
:17:56. > :18:00.model for all of us. In August, she was in the team that won the world
:18:00. > :18:06.relay gold, and last month in Auckland she added the under 23
:18:06. > :18:13.individual title. If 12 months ago you said I would get to stand on a
:18:13. > :18:17.world podium twice, I would not have believed you. It was fantastic,
:18:18. > :18:23.before the race, I knew I had a decent chance of getting a medal if
:18:23. > :18:30.it went to plan, as the race unfolded and I was looking about, I
:18:30. > :18:35.realise we were pulling away. I could not believe it. We gained
:18:35. > :18:43.confidence, when we went out onto the run there was two of us left.
:18:43. > :18:48.With one K to go live broke her and realised. It still hasn't hit home
:18:48. > :18:56.that I am world champion. It does not feel any different. Before that
:18:56. > :18:59.he had the relay Championship. was amazing, I was in a team with
:18:59. > :19:05.the Olympians, to stand at the start with them felt really
:19:05. > :19:13.honoured. It spurred me on to be allowed my best performance because
:19:13. > :19:17.I didn't want to let those guys down. Next year, we will be doing
:19:17. > :19:23.the world triathlon series, concentrating on doing well at that.
:19:23. > :19:25.The Grand Final is in London, so that would be fantastic. We also
:19:25. > :19:30.need to think about the Commonwealth selection which starts
:19:31. > :19:40.next year, if I can qualify next year, know that I have that in the
:19:41. > :19:42.
:19:42. > :19:45.back, that would be really good. I Back to football, and to a man who
:19:45. > :19:49.is still a hero to thousands of Swansea fans for getting the club
:19:49. > :19:54.into the Premier League. To others he is a villain for walking out in
:19:54. > :19:58.the summer to join Liverpool. This weekend, he's back at the Liberty
:19:58. > :20:04.Stadium for the first time, and we've been speaking to Brendan
:20:04. > :20:09.Rodgers. Never mind that he was only there for two years, getting
:20:09. > :20:17.Swansea to the Premier League made Brendan Rodgers one of the best
:20:17. > :20:21.managers to some. He left to go and match one of the biggest clubs in
:20:21. > :20:24.the world. It was a great experience and I was very honoured
:20:24. > :20:29.to be in Wales at that time because it was not just the Swansea
:20:29. > :20:33.experience, I loved the Welsh people, and they gave me everything.
:20:33. > :20:38.Whatever reception I get is irrelevant. The important thing is
:20:38. > :20:43.I know they're good people there. I'm sure time will heal any at
:20:43. > :20:49.thought they might have. Few would have spotted, but he makes his
:20:49. > :20:55.first return to Swansea with his old club above his new club in the
:20:56. > :21:05.table. I think the play slightly different. Each manager that has
:21:05. > :21:09.gone in there for the last six years, they created foundations,
:21:09. > :21:15.put different slants on it, there is a bit more counter-attack this

:25:13. > :25:22.and I was very grateful for this opportunity. It's my own country,
:25:22. > :25:27.it is even more humbling. That is sad legacy that the All Blacks have,
:25:27. > :25:31.you've got a duty to make sure you do things right and make it better,
:25:31. > :25:37.that's what pushes you along. People are saying it is the best
:25:37. > :25:42.I'd ever. Is that a difficult thing to deal with? Other people are
:25:42. > :25:46.saying that. It is just about us being as good as we can and
:25:46. > :25:52.striving to be better. That is one of the things we set out to do at
:25:52. > :25:57.the beginning of the year, respect our opponents at all times and get
:25:57. > :26:03.better as an individual and as a group. Going horribly wrong for
:26:03. > :26:08.Wales in the opening series. They know they need to go to the dark
:26:08. > :26:16.places to get right. When this Welsh team does that there are good
:26:16. > :26:21.side. History tells us that. Three Grand Slams and a semi-final in the
:26:21. > :26:29.World Cup. There is enough history there to suggest we need to go to
:26:30. > :26:35.the dark place ourselves and prepare completely, otherwise we
:26:35. > :26:41.will the second. We have just seen them. Is this the greatest All
:26:41. > :26:43.Blacks team ever? Difficult question. They are not bad. It is
:26:43. > :26:48.difficult to answer that considering I was involved in the
:26:48. > :26:53.team for a wild, so I was thinking we were not bad. These guys are
:26:53. > :27:00.pretty good, they have a winning streak, culminating in a dry in
:27:00. > :27:07.Brisbane. You try not to be too arrogant, because when you say they
:27:07. > :27:10.are the greatest team you get beaten. Steve Hanson said, maybe
:27:10. > :27:15.Wales took their eye off the ball. They have been looking at this
:27:15. > :27:20.match and they took the last two for granted. Can you see his point?
:27:20. > :27:26.Yes. Possibly they took their eye off the ball and targeted the All
:27:26. > :27:30.Blacks game. That is not sensible, but who knows? They could be
:27:30. > :27:35.building for a performance against the All Blacks. Let's hope so.
:27:35. > :27:41.have a soft spot against Wales. What do they need to do to beat
:27:41. > :27:47.them all Blacks? The need to uncomplicated themselves. The
:27:47. > :27:55.biggest issue I have seen is the are looking to do too much. I
:27:55. > :28:03.watched the game against Argentina, they were throwing short balls,
:28:03. > :28:08.outside drifting, it looked like it was too messy. The directness from
:28:08. > :28:17.Phillips on No. 9, those things were working really well. They need
:28:17. > :28:21.to not think too much. Are they too predictable? It doesn't matter if
:28:21. > :28:26.you're too predictable as long as you do it well. When the play and
:28:26. > :28:32.complicated rugby they are lethal. Score prediction? The All Blacks
:28:32. > :28:37.are a better team by 20 points. The pace and confidence they are
:28:37. > :28:42.playing with, Wales cannot get up to speed with which New Zealand are.
:28:42. > :28:47.It is New Zealand's second last game of the season, Wales are
:28:47. > :28:53.trying to find answers. We have already got the answers. Justin
