0:00:29 > 0:00:32Hello and welcome to April's edition of Sport XIV.
0:00:32 > 0:00:36We are well past the 100 day to go mark and the excitement is
0:00:36 > 0:00:40building towards Glasgow 2014 and these guys need no reminding.
0:00:40 > 0:00:46My first training session was the two-year anniversary of Dad's death.
0:00:46 > 0:00:50Our newest netball star, Fiona Themann, talks about her emotional journey...
0:00:53 > 0:00:56That psychological difference is a reason why I didn't win.
0:00:56 > 0:01:00There's fighting talk from Michael Jamieson...
0:01:00 > 0:01:02You start to feel the pressure building a little bit.
0:01:02 > 0:01:05Steve Frew on holding his nerve under pressure...
0:01:05 > 0:01:08So, what have you learned? Where do you think you did go wrong.
0:01:08 > 0:01:12In London, I had maybe unrealistic expectations of how I could do.
0:01:12 > 0:01:15Imogen Bankier and Kirsty Gilmour look ahead to Glasgow.
0:01:17 > 0:01:19I was like, "I'm never going to be able to dae this."
0:01:19 > 0:01:23And weight-loss weightlifter Georgi Black talks mind over matter.
0:01:29 > 0:01:33Now, can you imagine leaving your family, your job and your partner
0:01:33 > 0:01:37behind and travelling halfway around the world for one shot at glory.
0:01:37 > 0:01:39That's what one netball player did.
0:01:39 > 0:01:43Scotland's three match win over Trinidad and Tobago was
0:01:43 > 0:01:45significant for many reasons.
0:01:45 > 0:01:49Not least that Australian-born Fiona Themann made her debut.
0:01:49 > 0:01:53Here she tells us her emotional story.
0:01:53 > 0:01:55It was a sunny day with clear skies.
0:01:55 > 0:01:59Across our suburbs it's going to be hot and sunny tomorrow,
0:01:59 > 0:02:00a very hot 36 degrees.
0:02:03 > 0:02:08This is a purchase I made before I came over because I didn't own
0:02:08 > 0:02:10any warm jackets.
0:02:10 > 0:02:13We do get cold, well, we call it cold, winters in Melbourne.
0:02:13 > 0:02:17But this was probably the only purchase that I really had to make.
0:02:17 > 0:02:18Mum bought it for me for my birthday.
0:02:18 > 0:02:21Three weeks today I've been here so,
0:02:21 > 0:02:24not long but a lot has happened in those three weeks.
0:02:31 > 0:02:35We had the selection for the TNT 3 Test Series.
0:02:35 > 0:02:38I was lucky enough to be included into the squad of 12.
0:02:38 > 0:02:39So I was pretty happy with that.
0:02:41 > 0:02:45With my dad being Scottish, I hold a dual citizenship
0:02:45 > 0:02:49so I was able to come across here and represent Scotland.
0:02:49 > 0:02:52I took a year off work and flew over in March, so, yeah,
0:02:52 > 0:02:53it's all happened.
0:02:56 > 0:03:00Dad actually passed away two years ago on March 15th
0:03:00 > 0:03:04so my first training session was the two-year anniversary
0:03:04 > 0:03:07of Dad's death, so that's pretty special.
0:03:07 > 0:03:10I don't know if it's meant to be or things like that,
0:03:10 > 0:03:13but it just means a lot to be able to do that. Dad was the number one fan.
0:03:13 > 0:03:19Back home everyone knew him in the crowd, big Scottish accent.
0:03:19 > 0:03:22Screaming "Go, Fiona!" in the crowd.
0:03:22 > 0:03:26# Oh, flower of Scotland
0:03:26 > 0:03:30# When will we see... #
0:03:30 > 0:03:34When we actually got to go out and sing the national anthem,
0:03:34 > 0:03:38when I was singing that I was thinking, this is actually awesome.
0:03:38 > 0:03:41I just wish that he was here to see it all.
0:03:43 > 0:03:46Doona's another one we've got to know. What? A doona. Yeah.
0:03:46 > 0:03:50David and I have been having conversations
0:03:50 > 0:03:55and halfway through we're just like, "What does that word mean?"
0:03:55 > 0:03:57'So I moved over and have come straight to my uncle's
0:03:57 > 0:03:59'place in Govan.
0:03:59 > 0:04:04'They've really welcomed me into the house so I've made myself at home.
0:04:04 > 0:04:07'I've only been here three weeks and we've all been saying out there'
0:04:07 > 0:04:10that it feels so much longer than three weeks.
0:04:10 > 0:04:12So I guess that's a good thing.
0:04:12 > 0:04:16She's brilliant. It really is. We're so pleased that she is here.
0:04:16 > 0:04:18Couldn't be mair happy for her.
0:04:19 > 0:04:22Will it be exciting for you to see her playing for Scotland?
0:04:22 > 0:04:25Aw, the heart was bursting.
0:04:25 > 0:04:30It really was. She's something amazing.
0:04:33 > 0:04:35I would say that my style of play,
0:04:35 > 0:04:38I'm probably quite a vocal defender as I'm not afraid to maybe
0:04:38 > 0:04:42leave my player and go and have a fly out or a hunt as we call it,
0:04:42 > 0:04:44for the ball outside the circle.
0:04:44 > 0:04:48Having Hayley Mulheron behind me, who is an experienced Scottish goalkeeper
0:04:48 > 0:04:50has been excellent.
0:04:50 > 0:04:54We're starting to get an understanding together on the court.
0:04:54 > 0:04:57Rachel Forbes, obviously the Australian wing defence,
0:04:57 > 0:05:00plays a similar game as well so that's been great.
0:05:00 > 0:05:06She has a real man on man defensive style. Just her experience, her knowledge.
0:05:06 > 0:05:10She's got some great coaches out in Australia,
0:05:10 > 0:05:11so she brings it with her.
0:05:11 > 0:05:13She's really fitted in nicely into the team.
0:05:15 > 0:05:17That's what I got given.
0:05:17 > 0:05:21I got presented that after my first game on Monday night.
0:05:21 > 0:05:24I think I got it on Tuesday and all the girls signed it
0:05:24 > 0:05:26so, yeah, pretty cool.
0:05:28 > 0:05:31PA: This is Fiona's first match for Scotland.
0:05:33 > 0:05:37I guess, when you get an opportunity like this, you don't know if you're
0:05:37 > 0:05:40going to make it halfway around the world, whatever it is,
0:05:40 > 0:05:43anyone that you ask that's playing netball at a high level,
0:05:43 > 0:05:46or any sport that is at a high level, you do it because you love it.
0:05:46 > 0:05:48You don't think about those things.
0:05:48 > 0:05:52You just want to be the best that you can be.
0:05:52 > 0:05:56Obviously, it's made even more special that
0:05:56 > 0:06:01I can hopefully represent Scotland in the Commonwealth Games in memory
0:06:01 > 0:06:06of my late father, so all of those things add into it.
0:06:06 > 0:06:11I left my boyfriend back in Australia. He was supportive.
0:06:11 > 0:06:16He sent me over here. Mum is hopefully going to come over as well.
0:06:16 > 0:06:21So you sacrifice a lot, but it means so much more to be here.
0:06:47 > 0:06:50Now he is the poster boy for these Commonwealth Games
0:06:50 > 0:06:53and one of the best-known sports stars in our country.
0:06:53 > 0:06:56And as Chris McLaughlin discovered at the Scotland team
0:06:56 > 0:06:58announcement this month, Michael Jamieson
0:06:58 > 0:07:03is as relaxed as he is focused on making his mark this summer.
0:07:03 > 0:07:07Being sedated and having my heartbeat reset,
0:07:07 > 0:07:12I really don't see myself as someone who's got bags of talent or ability.
0:07:13 > 0:07:16Swimming kind of chose me from an early age.
0:07:16 > 0:07:19You know, obviously by then it's too late.
0:07:19 > 0:07:22Michael, it's almost upon us.
0:07:22 > 0:07:26We've had 100 days, now the team announcement. It's getting real.
0:07:26 > 0:07:28Yeah, another milestone today I guess,
0:07:28 > 0:07:31the team announcement itself.
0:07:31 > 0:07:34Things are getting real now.
0:07:34 > 0:07:37You can really feel the excitement building in the city
0:07:37 > 0:07:38as well as in the pool.
0:07:38 > 0:07:40Jamieson in four...
0:07:40 > 0:07:42It's going to be Jamieson...
0:07:42 > 0:07:45CROWD SCREAMS
0:07:47 > 0:07:51I remember the night you won your silver in London,
0:07:51 > 0:07:52not too far from here,
0:07:52 > 0:07:54there was a packed Celtic Park watching you on the big screens.
0:07:54 > 0:07:56Yeah, that was incredible.
0:07:56 > 0:08:00I think it shows how well the Scots look after their own.
0:08:00 > 0:08:04That's what I mean in saying that we could be part of something special
0:08:04 > 0:08:08this summer. I am thoroughly looking forward to it.
0:08:08 > 0:08:11I must admit you are probably one of the most laid-back athletes
0:08:11 > 0:08:13I've ever spoken to.
0:08:13 > 0:08:15Is the nasty streak in the pool?
0:08:16 > 0:08:19I think, within reason, yes. I love competing.
0:08:19 > 0:08:22Training is very much a process.
0:08:22 > 0:08:25As much as I enjoy those tough days in training,
0:08:25 > 0:08:30it's with things like this summer in mind, you know I train to win medals.
0:08:30 > 0:08:34I think that's where the biggest transition in my career has
0:08:34 > 0:08:36come in the last couple of years.
0:08:36 > 0:08:40Pre-London Olympics, the goal was always to make podiums
0:08:40 > 0:08:44and to be in the top three. Since then it's to win gold.
0:08:44 > 0:08:48It has to be that way now if I want to keep progressing as an athlete.
0:08:48 > 0:08:51Britain's Olympic silver medallist Michael Jamieson has revealed that
0:08:51 > 0:08:54doctors had to restart his heart on Wednesday morning.
0:08:54 > 0:08:57Jamieson, who is 25, said on Twitter that he was back at home
0:08:57 > 0:09:00and had been cleared to resume training after the scare, during
0:09:00 > 0:09:04which his heart rate soared and he developed an irregular heart beat.
0:09:05 > 0:09:10Yeah, it was not a situation I thought I'd find myself in.
0:09:10 > 0:09:16It was a bit strange. It was just a blip. It was a one-off occurrence.
0:09:16 > 0:09:20There is no indication that something like that will ever happen again.
0:09:20 > 0:09:23I think the positive to come out from that is that it now shows,
0:09:23 > 0:09:27everyone knows how hard I'm pushing for this summer.
0:09:27 > 0:09:31Within 12 hours I'd gone from doing a max effort
0:09:31 > 0:09:36session in the gym to being sedated and having my heartbeat reset
0:09:36 > 0:09:40almost and pushed back into a regular rhythm.
0:09:40 > 0:09:43So that is done and dusted now and if nothing else,
0:09:43 > 0:09:46it makes for a good story to tell.
0:09:46 > 0:09:48Rickard in two. Jamieson in five.
0:09:48 > 0:09:51Rickard in two and Rickard has got it.
0:09:51 > 0:09:56I really don't see myself as someone who's got bags of talent or ability.
0:09:56 > 0:10:01There's been no special recipe to it. I've just enjoyed working hard.
0:10:01 > 0:10:04I've enjoyed training hard, and swimming is a sport where you can't
0:10:04 > 0:10:07get the results you're looking for unless you're willing to put
0:10:07 > 0:10:10the work in, and I've never been scared of the hard work.
0:10:10 > 0:10:13Psychologically I think I'm a better athlete now,
0:10:13 > 0:10:17and as I mentioned earlier, now I think about winning titles
0:10:17 > 0:10:21and not just finishing in the top three, and that change in mindset
0:10:21 > 0:10:26is, I think, has been important in my development as an athlete.
0:10:26 > 0:10:29It's probably the reason why I never won Olympic gold
0:10:29 > 0:10:32because I didn't think about winning Olympic gold until I was
0:10:32 > 0:10:36actually in the water, and, you know, obviously, by then, it's too late.
0:10:36 > 0:10:39That silver medal was an amazing result for me
0:10:39 > 0:10:41and was everything I wanted it to be,
0:10:41 > 0:10:43but a few years on, looking back on it,
0:10:43 > 0:10:46that psychological difference is the reason why I didn't win
0:10:46 > 0:10:50and, you know, that's what's changed post-Olympic Games.
0:10:50 > 0:10:53You come from a sporting background, don't you?
0:10:53 > 0:10:56Your father was a professional footballer with Alloa.
0:10:56 > 0:10:58But you were also nearly a footballer?
0:10:58 > 0:10:59HE LAUGHS
0:10:59 > 0:11:03I think, er, I think I'd say that loosely.
0:11:03 > 0:11:05I mean, I wasn't a great footballer.
0:11:05 > 0:11:08I played upfront and I had absolutely no pace, so, erm...
0:11:08 > 0:11:10A poacher, a good old-fashioned poacher?
0:11:10 > 0:11:11A poacher, yeah.
0:11:11 > 0:11:13I used to enjoy football, I loved playing it,
0:11:13 > 0:11:16but, I mean, swimming kind of chose me from an early age, I think,
0:11:16 > 0:11:20and that story's just kind of ran its course and, erm, you know,
0:11:20 > 0:11:23I always have a laugh about it with my dad
0:11:23 > 0:11:26because he, you know, is always taking the Mick about it
0:11:26 > 0:11:31and says I never once had a career in football.
0:11:31 > 0:11:33You know, I was just kind of sport mad as a kid
0:11:33 > 0:11:38and enjoyed competing and taking part in anything, and, erm,
0:11:38 > 0:11:42you know, obviously, made the right choice in sticking in the pool.
0:11:45 > 0:11:48Don't go away, plenty still to come here on Sport XIV.
0:11:50 > 0:11:53'Your mind gives up before your body does.
0:11:53 > 0:11:55'Train harder to fight harder.
0:11:55 > 0:11:58'At the end, it's you that's got to help yourself.'
0:11:58 > 0:12:00'It's hard to explain how much it would mean.'
0:12:00 > 0:12:02'Nothing was really expected of me
0:12:02 > 0:12:04'which is the complete opposite to now.'
0:12:04 > 0:12:07But before that, let's go back in time.
0:12:07 > 0:12:10Scotland's only won one gymnastics gold medal,
0:12:10 > 0:12:14it was back in 2002, it was Steve Frew.
0:12:14 > 0:12:19A fairy tale performance in his very last routine before retirement.
0:12:29 > 0:12:31BARRY DAVIES: A very warm welcome
0:12:31 > 0:12:34for the man from the Alloa Gym Club,
0:12:34 > 0:12:36Steve Frew.
0:12:37 > 0:12:40'My expectations going into the event was that
0:12:40 > 0:12:42'I wanted to hit my personal best.'
0:12:42 > 0:12:45I was planning for this to be my final gymnastic competition,
0:12:45 > 0:12:50and, erm, I was going there to do the best that I possibly could.
0:12:50 > 0:12:53In the rings final, there's eight gymnasts compete.
0:12:53 > 0:12:56I was number eight to go up out of eight, so, seven gymnasts go up,
0:12:56 > 0:12:58compete the routine,
0:12:58 > 0:13:02and then you start to feel the pressure building a little bit.
0:13:03 > 0:13:07I knew that I had the opportunity, the stage was set,
0:13:07 > 0:13:12and, er, you know, I'd trained really well in the year prior to Manchester,
0:13:12 > 0:13:15so I was physically and mentally prepared to do the best that I could.
0:13:15 > 0:13:18I'd never get a better opportunity, I think.
0:13:22 > 0:13:25I mean, it's almost like a force, a G-force is going through your body.
0:13:25 > 0:13:27I had 10 moves to do in my routine
0:13:27 > 0:13:32and I was only concentrating on each single move as it happened.
0:13:32 > 0:13:35So I was taking each step at a time.
0:13:35 > 0:13:39So I wasn't even really thinking about gold, silver or bronze.
0:13:41 > 0:13:42'And he's been in four Games,
0:13:42 > 0:13:45'he's never managed to make the final before.
0:13:46 > 0:13:48'Is there some reward?'
0:13:48 > 0:13:49I knew that I was good enough
0:13:49 > 0:13:53and it was just a case of could I pull it off under pressure?
0:13:54 > 0:13:58'And it's silver.
0:13:58 > 0:14:00'In fact, it's shared gold!
0:14:00 > 0:14:02'It's shared gold.'
0:14:02 > 0:14:04It's not too rare in gymnastics.
0:14:04 > 0:14:09If two gymnasts get the same score, then they tie for a medal.
0:14:09 > 0:14:12I was so happy to win a gold medal regardless.
0:14:12 > 0:14:16It was a pleasure, actually, to share my glory with someone else.
0:14:16 > 0:14:17I thought that was a great moment.
0:14:17 > 0:14:20You know, Herodotos was a great rings worker,
0:14:20 > 0:14:26and to be put on the same level as him, for me, I was happy with that.
0:14:26 > 0:14:29I'd done the best routine that I possibly could at the time.
0:14:29 > 0:14:34So, as I say, there was nothing to lose at all.
0:14:34 > 0:14:36I was very happy with what I did.
0:14:38 > 0:14:41This gymnast of long standing has well deserved the reward that
0:14:41 > 0:14:43he's about to receive, Steven Frew.
0:14:45 > 0:14:48It was incredible. I am Scottish.
0:14:48 > 0:14:51I, you know, I lived, I was born in Scotland, and it was great to
0:14:51 > 0:14:55finally give something back to the country that I'm from.
0:14:56 > 0:14:58Erm, to listen to the national anthem,
0:14:58 > 0:15:03to hear the joy from the crowds, the people, and just knowing that you had
0:15:03 > 0:15:06done the best that you could to help the team around you
0:15:06 > 0:15:08was a great thing for me.
0:15:10 > 0:15:12It was a first, and it's still the only gymnastics gold medal
0:15:12 > 0:15:16for Scotland in the history of the Commonwealth Games, so that was a
0:15:16 > 0:15:22big thing and a pleasure to have been the one to do that for the country.
0:15:22 > 0:15:24So, hopefully, fingers crossed,
0:15:24 > 0:15:28Scotland will win a gold medal in gymnastics in 2014 in Glasgow.
0:15:36 > 0:15:39Badminton will take place at the Emirates Arena,
0:15:39 > 0:15:43and although the team hasn't been picked, hopes are high of medals.
0:15:43 > 0:15:45We brought together the past, the present
0:15:45 > 0:15:49and the future as three of our best players looked ahead to the summer.
0:16:06 > 0:16:07Take one, action.
0:16:07 > 0:16:10Imogen, there's only a couple of months to go until Glasgow.
0:16:10 > 0:16:12Just tell me how this season has gone so far.
0:16:12 > 0:16:13Yeah, it's gone quite well.
0:16:13 > 0:16:18We've obviously been really busy qualifying for the Games of course.
0:16:18 > 0:16:21Both myself and Kirsty have been trying to get seeded,
0:16:21 > 0:16:23or in seeding positions, for our respective events.
0:16:23 > 0:16:24It's been really busy,
0:16:24 > 0:16:27but now it's quite exciting cos it's getting really close.
0:16:27 > 0:16:28Looking forward to it.
0:16:28 > 0:16:29How have you been getting on, Kirsty?
0:16:29 > 0:16:32How is everything going in the build-up to Glasgow?
0:16:32 > 0:16:33Yeah, it's been going really well.
0:16:33 > 0:16:36Obviously it's been nonstop since September.
0:16:36 > 0:16:39We had a little rest at Christmas.
0:16:39 > 0:16:41Then it was straight back in to tournaments.
0:16:41 > 0:16:43It's been really quite relentless.
0:16:45 > 0:16:49That is it. It's the end of the Olympic dream for Bankier and Adcock.
0:16:50 > 0:16:53You were disappointed with how you did in London.
0:16:53 > 0:16:57Do you think Glasgow's your chance to redeem yourself?
0:16:57 > 0:17:00Yeah, that's how I like to think of it in my head, because I feel
0:17:00 > 0:17:04as though it was a disappointing tournament for me in London.
0:17:05 > 0:17:08Yeah, I think I've got a chance to redeem myself
0:17:08 > 0:17:10and to learn from where I went wrong in London.
0:17:10 > 0:17:11So what have you learnt?
0:17:11 > 0:17:13Where do you think that you did go wrong
0:17:13 > 0:17:15and you won't make those mistakes again?
0:17:15 > 0:17:17I think that the expectation is different.
0:17:17 > 0:17:21In London I had maybe unrealistic expectations of how I could do.
0:17:21 > 0:17:24Based upon a couple of good tournaments, I thought
0:17:24 > 0:17:26we could do really well.
0:17:27 > 0:17:29Looking back now in hindsight,
0:17:29 > 0:17:31I don't think that was really realistic.
0:17:31 > 0:17:33We just expected because we were in London
0:17:33 > 0:17:36and because it was a home event, everything was just going to
0:17:36 > 0:17:38fall into place and work for us, and it didn't.
0:17:38 > 0:17:39That's nice.
0:17:39 > 0:17:41Lovely interception.
0:17:43 > 0:17:46Kirsty, this is your second Commonwealth Games,
0:17:46 > 0:17:50but you're far more experienced this time compared to Delhi
0:17:50 > 0:17:52when you were just a little kid.
0:17:52 > 0:17:58Obviously Delhi I was on a total experience clause. I wasn't really...
0:17:58 > 0:18:01Nothing was really expected of me, which is
0:18:01 > 0:18:04the complete opposite to now, which I think I'm a real...
0:18:04 > 0:18:07Obviously I've got a really good medal chance,
0:18:07 > 0:18:13but there's maybe five or six girls that are contenders
0:18:13 > 0:18:16for the three medals, so it's going to be really quite tough.
0:18:16 > 0:18:19You guys have both moved up from the GB system,
0:18:19 > 0:18:22or you've come out the GB system to train in Scotland.
0:18:22 > 0:18:25Imogen, you came out of the GB system after the Olympics,
0:18:25 > 0:18:28and you now have Scottish partners rather than English partners.
0:18:28 > 0:18:30What do you think that has done for you?
0:18:30 > 0:18:32Em, well, first of all it's enabled me
0:18:32 > 0:18:34to focus a lot more on the Commonwealth Games,
0:18:34 > 0:18:38cos if I'd still been a part of the GB system then
0:18:38 > 0:18:39I wouldn't be focusing on it at all,
0:18:39 > 0:18:41I'd be focusing on the World Championships
0:18:41 > 0:18:43with my English partners.
0:18:43 > 0:18:47It's enabled me to really make the Commonwealth Games a milestone,
0:18:47 > 0:18:49whereas I think it was just going to breeze past
0:18:49 > 0:18:50if I'd been part of the GB system.
0:18:50 > 0:18:53How about you Kirsty? I did the same as you.
0:18:53 > 0:18:55I came out of the GB system and trained in Scotland.
0:18:55 > 0:18:58Certainly I think it was a huge benefit, training up here.
0:18:58 > 0:19:00How about you? Yeah, definitely.
0:19:00 > 0:19:03I think there was a little bit of pressure to go down to Milton Keynes.
0:19:03 > 0:19:04I'm really happy up here.
0:19:04 > 0:19:07It is enabling me to wholly concentrate on Commonwealth Games,
0:19:07 > 0:19:12cos it's a really big deal for me and for all Scottish athletes.
0:19:13 > 0:19:15I know they don't put as much emphasis on it.
0:19:15 > 0:19:18Yeah, I'm quite happy being up here right now.
0:19:22 > 0:19:23It's long!
0:19:26 > 0:19:30Susan Hughes kept her nerve. The Glaswegian gets a bronze.
0:19:30 > 0:19:33What would it mean to both of you guys to stand on a podium,
0:19:33 > 0:19:34watching the saltire go up?
0:19:35 > 0:19:39That would be, I would guess, both your biggest achievements to date.
0:19:39 > 0:19:46I got maybe a tiny little taste. I got a Youth Games bronze medal.
0:19:46 > 0:19:48That's maybe the closest I've ever been to being on a podium with the
0:19:48 > 0:19:52flags going up, cos at international tournaments that doesn't happen.
0:19:52 > 0:19:54I think for me, at this stage of my career,
0:19:54 > 0:19:57it would've course be the highlight of my career so far.
0:19:58 > 0:20:01It's hard to explain how much it would mean,
0:20:01 > 0:20:04but that's certainly been a focus for the last couple of years,
0:20:04 > 0:20:06so if it all came together on the day,
0:20:06 > 0:20:09I think that would be absolutely fantastic.
0:20:09 > 0:20:11You guys will also be playing ladies doubles together.
0:20:11 > 0:20:12How have you managed to get on?
0:20:12 > 0:20:15You've only started playing together this season.
0:20:15 > 0:20:18It's been quite a slow, gradual progression,
0:20:18 > 0:20:22because we both, in our respective events,
0:20:22 > 0:20:24have achieved quite a lot, so there's been
0:20:24 > 0:20:28a lot of emphasis on Kirsty for her singles and me for my mixed.
0:20:28 > 0:20:31I think we're the two players that have it in us, have the
0:20:31 > 0:20:33capability of managing to beat people.
0:20:33 > 0:20:35How's it been for you playing doubles, Kirsty?
0:20:35 > 0:20:38Has it felt easy when you've only got half a court to cover?
0:20:38 > 0:20:40That's what I always say. Oh, it's so easy.
0:20:40 > 0:20:43It's more like three quarters if she's playing with me.
0:20:43 > 0:20:46She has a corner. It's like singles with an obstacle.
0:20:48 > 0:20:50It's a really exciting few months for Scottish athletes.
0:20:50 > 0:20:55I think I'm pretty jealous that you guys are getting the whole build-up.
0:20:55 > 0:20:57Yeah, I think it's going to be...
0:20:57 > 0:20:59I'm quite glad I'm going to be in the city, for a start,
0:20:59 > 0:21:01living in Glasgow for the build-up to the Games.
0:21:01 > 0:21:03I think people are getting excited now.
0:21:03 > 0:21:06All the different arenas are finished
0:21:06 > 0:21:09and people are getting that buzz and excitement about the Games.
0:21:09 > 0:21:11That's great to be a part of.
0:21:11 > 0:21:13Well, it's been great to catch up with you both.
0:21:13 > 0:21:17You're both looking really fit, and really good luck for the Games.
0:21:17 > 0:21:19Thank you very much. Thank you.
0:21:23 > 0:21:24Here, with some of the other stories
0:21:24 > 0:21:27that have made the headlines this month, is Jane Lewis.
0:21:27 > 0:21:31What a race there by Lee McConnell. Big smiles - a silver medal.
0:21:31 > 0:21:34There will be no emotional fourth Commonwealth Games
0:21:34 > 0:21:35for Lee McConnell.
0:21:35 > 0:21:39She's decided to retire after giving birth in October.
0:21:39 > 0:21:41I'd love to have been able to compete in Glasgow.
0:21:41 > 0:21:44I now believe that I wouldn't be at my best at Glasgow.
0:21:44 > 0:21:47I've never been willing to turn up at Glasgow, Hampden,
0:21:47 > 0:21:50in front of a home crowd, and deliver a below-par performance.
0:21:52 > 0:21:55The Emirates played host to the National Boxing Championships,
0:21:55 > 0:21:57and there was a big win for Lewis Benson,
0:21:57 > 0:22:01who moved up to welterweight to defeat his friend Connor Law.
0:22:02 > 0:22:06Yeah, he's a great pal of mine, but today we've not spoke one word.
0:22:06 > 0:22:08He was staring me out in the ring beforehand, like,
0:22:08 > 0:22:10"Aye, you must be for real then. Let's do this."
0:22:10 > 0:22:12So I went in there.
0:22:12 > 0:22:15Game plan was, first two rounds, make sure I get them in the bag.
0:22:15 > 0:22:20I got them in the bag. Then the third round I was coasting a wee bit.
0:22:20 > 0:22:23Elsewhere there were wins for Scott Forrest in red,
0:22:23 > 0:22:27and a big knockout victory for bantamweight Joe Ham.
0:22:31 > 0:22:33Plenty of new faces for Team Scotland.
0:22:33 > 0:22:38Squash players Kevin Moran, Stuart Crawford and Greg Lobban,
0:22:38 > 0:22:41and gymnasts Lauren Brash, Rebecca Bee
0:22:41 > 0:22:44and Victoria Clow got their Glasgow call-ups.
0:22:46 > 0:22:49While earlier this week the boxing, wrestling
0:22:49 > 0:22:51and Para-bowls teams were named.
0:22:53 > 0:22:56And here's what they'll be competing for.
0:22:56 > 0:23:00Glasgow 2014 medals were officially unveiled earlier this month.
0:23:03 > 0:23:0415 kilos - how heavy is that?
0:23:04 > 0:23:0615 bags of sugar
0:23:06 > 0:23:09and the maximum weight you can check in on some airlines.
0:23:09 > 0:23:12When it comes to body weight, it's a lot.
0:23:12 > 0:23:15Trying to lose 15 kilos and getting stronger is difficult,
0:23:15 > 0:23:18as weightlifter Georgi Black explains.
0:23:21 > 0:23:24Two years. Two years of cutting down and cutting things out.
0:23:27 > 0:23:30I was like, "I'm never going to be able to do this."
0:23:30 > 0:23:36The heaviest I was 78.6, I remember on the scales.
0:23:36 > 0:23:40The February of this year I was able to make 63, 15 kilos all in.
0:23:43 > 0:23:45Hungry.
0:23:45 > 0:23:46Starving.
0:23:48 > 0:23:52If you eat all the right things, you get all your vitamins,
0:23:52 > 0:23:57minerals, and you don't really crave much, do you know what I mean?
0:23:57 > 0:23:59As long as you drink hundreds of water too,
0:23:59 > 0:24:01it keeps you fuller for longer.
0:24:01 > 0:24:05Oh, aye, it was hard work. My mum, she works offshore.
0:24:05 > 0:24:07When she came home, she didn't phone in as much takeaways.
0:24:07 > 0:24:09Phoned something in when I'm not in the house.
0:24:09 > 0:24:11So everybody's helping me out.
0:24:11 > 0:24:14I'd make sure there's nothing around the house that I can pick,
0:24:14 > 0:24:16eat things as extra calories, as we'll call it.
0:24:18 > 0:24:21Focus and determination was definitely there.
0:24:22 > 0:24:24Aye, I wasn't...
0:24:27 > 0:24:29People question what way do you do it.
0:24:29 > 0:24:32It wasn't rocket science, really. It was just hard...
0:24:32 > 0:24:33Up here, up here in the brain.
0:24:33 > 0:24:35Everything you want to do in life is upstairs.
0:24:35 > 0:24:36I'm a great believer in that.
0:24:36 > 0:24:38This is a couple of photos of Georgi.
0:24:38 > 0:24:41One here when she was slightly heavier.
0:24:41 > 0:24:43She started just partying
0:24:43 > 0:24:46and never took the weightlifting as serious as we'd have liked it to be.
0:24:46 > 0:24:49When that photo came in, I couldn't believe it.
0:24:49 > 0:24:53A lot of people, when I was on the left photo wouldn't say that's
0:24:53 > 0:24:56a really bad picture, I didn't look like that.
0:24:56 > 0:24:59But obviously I did, you know what I mean?
0:24:59 > 0:25:02I'm well happy with the right photo. Just keep that one.
0:25:04 > 0:25:06It's a lifestyle change, it's not a diet.
0:25:06 > 0:25:10If it becomes a diet then you've already prepared yourself
0:25:10 > 0:25:11that you're going to come off it.
0:25:11 > 0:25:15Just cutting out simple things like white bread or all breads anyway,
0:25:15 > 0:25:20pasta, rice, potatoes. Any starchy carbs.
0:25:20 > 0:25:24We got her down to about 67 kilo at the tail end of last year.
0:25:24 > 0:25:3066.2, I made. So we still had three, three-and-a-half kilo to go.
0:25:30 > 0:25:32That was the hard point to do.
0:25:32 > 0:25:36She came from eating 1,500 to 1,800 calories in a day
0:25:36 > 0:25:38down to, the final two weeks was 800.
0:25:38 > 0:25:41Under 800. Under 800 calories a day.
0:25:41 > 0:25:43Come the day of the comp, we stripped her and she weighed-in on
0:25:43 > 0:25:47the scales, that was the first gold - making that weight.
0:25:50 > 0:25:52Training feels easier.
0:25:52 > 0:25:55Obviously with excess body weight, body fat, you're not as flexible.
0:25:55 > 0:25:58You've got a lot more fat round about your joints.
0:25:58 > 0:26:01You're slower, you're sluggish. I became faster, leaner.
0:26:01 > 0:26:03My muscles were working better. Training feels better.
0:26:03 > 0:26:07You don't feel tired halfway through a training session either.
0:26:07 > 0:26:08You know what grans are like.
0:26:08 > 0:26:11Grans like to give you cakes and stuff, "Oh, you're looking thin."
0:26:11 > 0:26:13But...
0:26:13 > 0:26:16my friends, they all know the Commonwealth Games are coming up.
0:26:16 > 0:26:19It's the biggest opportunity, the biggest achievement of my life.
0:26:19 > 0:26:21From just being a competitor in Glasgow,
0:26:21 > 0:26:25we're going to be in the medal hunt in Glasgow, you know what I mean?
0:26:25 > 0:26:27I'm not saying we're going to come away with a medal,
0:26:27 > 0:26:31but if everything goes well and there are a couple of hiccups
0:26:31 > 0:26:34with the strong countries, that will let Georgi in the door.
0:26:34 > 0:26:38I know what it's like, cos I used to strip down from 90 kilo
0:26:38 > 0:26:40to 82.5 to compete, and I went to the Games.
0:26:40 > 0:26:44So I was just implementing how I felt into Georgi's head.
0:26:44 > 0:26:47Somebody positive there to keep you on the right track,
0:26:47 > 0:26:50even although they maybe tell you a wee lie.
0:26:50 > 0:26:51How you feeling today, "Brilliant."
0:26:51 > 0:26:53You ken with the voice, you know what I mean?
0:26:53 > 0:26:55I know when she walks in the door.
0:26:55 > 0:26:57Last night she walked in the door, I'm going,
0:26:57 > 0:27:00"Oh, aye, do you need a cuddle tonight." Things like that.
0:27:00 > 0:27:02That just keeps them going a wee bit.
0:27:05 > 0:27:08Your mind gives up before your body does,
0:27:08 > 0:27:14so if you can re-programme that to train harder, to fight harder,
0:27:14 > 0:27:19to focus on your goals, then anything is possible. Nothing's impossible.
0:27:19 > 0:27:21You can't make PBs all the time,
0:27:21 > 0:27:24you'll have more downs than you will ups.
0:27:24 > 0:27:29It's just keeping motivated, keep focused, have your own goals,
0:27:29 > 0:27:32make your own short-term goals, long-term goals.
0:27:32 > 0:27:33Where do you want to be?
0:27:33 > 0:27:36There's hundreds of people out there who will help you,
0:27:36 > 0:27:39but at the end it's you that's got to help yourself first.
0:27:46 > 0:27:48Well, that's just about it for this month.
0:27:48 > 0:27:50If it's whetted your appetite, please go to our website.
0:27:50 > 0:27:53You heard earlier on that Lee McConnell has retired.
0:27:53 > 0:27:56She was our most successful female sprinter -
0:27:56 > 0:27:5814 years at the top, and we wish her well.
0:27:58 > 0:28:00Bye-bye.
0:28:00 > 0:28:03MUSIC: "Trembling Hands" by The Temper Trap
0:28:03 > 0:28:07# Somebody out there, help me
0:28:07 > 0:28:10# I'm on my own
0:28:10 > 0:28:14# I'm on my own
0:28:14 > 0:28:17# Throw me a line
0:28:17 > 0:28:21# Afraid that I have come here
0:28:21 > 0:28:25# To win you again
0:28:25 > 0:28:30# With trembling hands
0:28:35 > 0:28:37# There goes the ending
0:28:39 > 0:28:41# It left me in the war
0:28:42 > 0:28:44# But I tried everything, dear
0:28:46 > 0:28:48# I am done with my part. #
