0:00:29 > 0:00:32Hello and welcome to June's edition of Sport XIV.

0:00:32 > 0:00:34Forget the World Cup,

0:00:34 > 0:00:37the Commonwealth Games are just under a month away.

0:00:37 > 0:00:38The final team has been picked

0:00:38 > 0:00:41and it is battle stations for all our athletes, including this one.

0:00:44 > 0:00:46I have got a helmet on, body armour, big pads,

0:00:46 > 0:00:48and everyone else wears a gum-shield.

0:00:48 > 0:00:51So I think I am probably the most sensible.

0:00:51 > 0:00:55Scottish hockey's Amy Gibson debunks the myth about a goalkeeper's

0:00:55 > 0:01:00- frame of mind.- I was out for just under ten years. Competing wise.

0:01:00 > 0:01:04I think it would be a much better way to end my gymnastics career.

0:01:04 > 0:01:08Judo player John Buchanan and gymnast Adam Cox

0:01:08 > 0:01:11are turning back the clock for one last shot at glory.

0:01:11 > 0:01:14To get to an international, as in football,

0:01:14 > 0:01:17was a million miles away from the level I was at.

0:01:17 > 0:01:20The Stenhousemuir striker who had to quit football

0:01:20 > 0:01:23in order to represent Scotland at Hampden.

0:01:23 > 0:01:26Because I go through so much rubbish, in the end.

0:01:26 > 0:01:28And wheelchair racer Meggan Dawson-Farrell

0:01:28 > 0:01:30on digging deep when it matters.

0:01:33 > 0:01:37But first, hockey. They say that all goalkeepers are mad.

0:01:37 > 0:01:41But Scotland's number one, Amy Gibson, seems perfectly composed.

0:01:41 > 0:01:44That is despite the odd ukulele jam session with her dog,

0:01:44 > 0:01:46as you are about to see.

0:01:50 > 0:01:55People say that goalkeepers are the most stupid in the team.

0:01:55 > 0:01:59But basically, I have got a helmet on, body armour, big pads,

0:01:59 > 0:02:01and everyone else wears a gum-shield.

0:02:01 > 0:02:05So I think I'm probably the most sensible.

0:02:05 > 0:02:06I played football and my mum told me

0:02:06 > 0:02:11that I said I didn't like running about, so I ended up just

0:02:11 > 0:02:15playing in goals, because you are standing about, don't do so much.

0:02:20 > 0:02:22It is difficult, obviously, if a forward loses the ball

0:02:22 > 0:02:27or does not stop properly, it goes to a defender, and that is fine.

0:02:27 > 0:02:29Or it goes off the pitch.

0:02:29 > 0:02:32Whereas, if I don't stop the ball properly, it will go in the goal.

0:02:32 > 0:02:34That is a pretty big mistake.

0:02:34 > 0:02:37As a goalkeeper you have got to be able to deal with that.

0:02:37 > 0:02:39It is something you learn to deal with

0:02:39 > 0:02:41over the years of being a goalkeeper.

0:02:42 > 0:02:45In a game you maybe get one or two shots

0:02:45 > 0:02:48and then you get a break for five minutes.

0:02:48 > 0:02:51Or if we are attacking, you might not have much to do, in the sense

0:02:51 > 0:02:53that you don't need to save a ball,

0:02:53 > 0:02:54but you're still chatting to everyone.

0:02:54 > 0:02:57In a game, if you make a mistake

0:02:57 > 0:03:00or don't save the ball as nicely as you want to,

0:03:00 > 0:03:05you need to get over that and just keep talking to your defenders.

0:03:05 > 0:03:10I have got my ukulele. I like to play it sometimes.

0:03:10 > 0:03:15There is a song that me and my housemate sometimes sing

0:03:15 > 0:03:18if we have a guest over or whatever.

0:03:18 > 0:03:22It is a bit lame. But we just make up our own words.

0:03:22 > 0:03:24It goes a bit like this.

0:03:24 > 0:03:30PLAYS RIFF REPEATEDLY

0:03:33 > 0:03:35And then we just make up our own words.

0:03:35 > 0:03:39This is one that has been in the charts. It is pretty good.

0:03:39 > 0:03:42I'll play it, see if you can guess what it is.

0:03:42 > 0:03:46PLAYS CHORD STRUCTURE

0:03:46 > 0:03:49Oh, I've messed it up!

0:03:54 > 0:03:58Any ideas? It is 5 Years Time, by Noah And The Whale.

0:04:06 > 0:04:12I have been chosen to carry the Queen's baton through Dumbarton.

0:04:12 > 0:04:17I asked for a medium and they sent a large. Just a wee bit big.

0:04:17 > 0:04:20Wear it over my goalie kit!

0:04:25 > 0:04:27I went to the trials

0:04:27 > 0:04:31and I got selected into the GB squad through that.

0:04:31 > 0:04:34We all went to San Diego in February.

0:04:34 > 0:04:38Unfortunately I was injured and never got to play.

0:04:38 > 0:04:40I'm really disappointed,

0:04:40 > 0:04:44because I really want to play with Kate Richardson-Walsh,

0:04:44 > 0:04:48but she is retiring after the Commonwealth Games.

0:04:48 > 0:04:52So, I am a wee bit disappointed that I will never get to play with her.

0:04:52 > 0:04:54It would be good to be able to get to the final

0:04:54 > 0:04:57and play against England in the final.

0:04:57 > 0:05:00But I am obviously going to want to do it for my country.

0:05:00 > 0:05:04Sorry, Kate, but I'm going to deny you that shot.

0:05:14 > 0:05:17We are aiming for a semifinal.

0:05:17 > 0:05:20That is the aim, so, to come top two in the group.

0:05:20 > 0:05:25That will be difficult with who we have in the group -

0:05:25 > 0:05:31Australia, England, Malaysia and Wales. It will be a tough ask.

0:05:31 > 0:05:33But we have been working really hard.

0:05:33 > 0:05:39We performed really well last year at the Europeans,

0:05:39 > 0:05:44and we basically started where we finished at the Europeans,

0:05:44 > 0:05:47we have just grown on top of that.

0:05:47 > 0:05:52We're hoping we can go out there and perform well and get the wins.

0:05:52 > 0:05:55DOG BARKS ALONG WITH TUNE

0:05:55 > 0:05:58That is pretty good. That is Britain's Got Talent!

0:06:30 > 0:06:32Have you heard the one about the old warhorse

0:06:32 > 0:06:35making a comeback for one last shot at glory

0:06:35 > 0:06:38after a decade in retirement?

0:06:38 > 0:06:41It is not a Hollywood movie plot, it is the real-life story

0:06:41 > 0:06:43of judo hero John Buchanan,

0:06:43 > 0:06:45who is about to cap an amazing comeback.

0:06:59 > 0:07:03Originally I finished in 2004.

0:07:03 > 0:07:04I competed in the Sydney Olympics,

0:07:04 > 0:07:07I won a medal in the 2001 World Championships,

0:07:07 > 0:07:09and I was reserved for the Athens Olympics.

0:07:09 > 0:07:11I missed that place to Craig Fallon.

0:07:11 > 0:07:13That's when I decided to call it a day.

0:07:14 > 0:07:17Myself and my wife, Claire Buchanan,

0:07:17 > 0:07:22we moved everything we owned in the back of a car, back home to Scotland.

0:07:22 > 0:07:26I was out for just under ten years, competing wise,

0:07:26 > 0:07:29I never fought a competition until the tail end of last year.

0:07:33 > 0:07:36I remember watching the 2012 Olympics in London and I just,

0:07:36 > 0:07:38it inspires you.

0:07:38 > 0:07:40You think, I wish I'd stuck in.

0:07:40 > 0:07:42With the home Games in Glasgow,

0:07:42 > 0:07:44I came in and had a meeting with David, I said, "Do you think

0:07:44 > 0:07:47"if I have a bit of training I could maybe make the team?"

0:07:47 > 0:07:49Certainly when we first discussed it there was a lot of laughter

0:07:49 > 0:07:53amongst the two of us, in the conversation.

0:07:53 > 0:07:57But no, I think the vast, vast majority of even high-performance

0:07:57 > 0:08:01players would struggle, but John has aged relatively well.

0:08:03 > 0:08:06He said, "We will get you to fight in a couple of tournaments.

0:08:06 > 0:08:08"If they go well, we will back you

0:08:08 > 0:08:10"and we will see how it goes from there."

0:08:14 > 0:08:16The first two competitions that I fought in did not go very well.

0:08:16 > 0:08:18In fact, the first three did not.

0:08:18 > 0:08:22But the last three that I have fought in, I have medalled in every

0:08:22 > 0:08:25single European Cup, the last three attempts.

0:08:25 > 0:08:28The last one in Bosnia, which was the very last qualifier,

0:08:28 > 0:08:31I beat the current European silver medallist.

0:08:31 > 0:08:34Maybe two tournaments in, I was sitting with Euan over a cup of tea,

0:08:34 > 0:08:38I said, "I think I might have bitten off more than I can chew."

0:08:38 > 0:08:39He said the same.

0:08:39 > 0:08:43"What if people say you are now no' good enough to make the team?"

0:08:43 > 0:08:46The following day, I lost first round and Euan won the tournament.

0:08:46 > 0:08:48And it was getting to the point where I was thinking,

0:08:48 > 0:08:50"I'm going to call it a day."

0:08:50 > 0:08:52It just so happened that the next tournament,

0:08:52 > 0:08:57I managed to find a wee bit of form again and managed to pull a bronze.

0:08:58 > 0:09:01Nobody trains harder than Buchanan.

0:09:01 > 0:09:04He is a great athlete, John Buchanan.

0:09:04 > 0:09:06You spend your whole judo career building yourself up to be

0:09:06 > 0:09:09the number one in the country for five years,

0:09:09 > 0:09:12and then it can all be undone in the blink of an eye.

0:09:12 > 0:09:14I'll never, ever get back to how strong I was or how fit I was,

0:09:14 > 0:09:20the very tournament I fought in, the very first contest I had, I lost.

0:09:20 > 0:09:23And there was a kind of eerie silence.

0:09:23 > 0:09:24Because my children were there,

0:09:24 > 0:09:27I could hear them shouting in the crowd, "Come on, Daddy!"

0:09:27 > 0:09:30And it was just a numbness. People were looking at my wife,

0:09:30 > 0:09:32going, "What's he done there?!"

0:09:33 > 0:09:36And she was going up the stairs of the stadium and there was a whole

0:09:36 > 0:09:41group people sitting, and she said, "Oh, well, no fool like an old fool!"

0:09:41 > 0:09:44Craig Fallon wins very, very comprehensively

0:09:44 > 0:09:46against John Buchanan.

0:09:46 > 0:09:50Mixed emotions that day. My wife got silver that day.

0:09:50 > 0:09:54I was then current world medallist and I never won a fight.

0:09:54 > 0:09:57So I can't really do any worse now, ten years on,

0:09:57 > 0:10:00I am not really going to put any pressure on myself.

0:10:00 > 0:10:05So it motivates me in that way, that I know that I can't do any worse.

0:10:15 > 0:10:19It makes you feel both proud and inspired, if I'm being honest.

0:10:19 > 0:10:22It is an inspiring story that athletes can drag themselves up

0:10:22 > 0:10:26and rise from where they have maybe been in the past ten years.

0:10:26 > 0:10:32It is most definitely too late for David Somerville!

0:10:32 > 0:10:34Yeah, the body is not responding great.

0:10:34 > 0:10:36I had a rib problem, a hamstring problem,

0:10:36 > 0:10:39at the minute I have got a kind of knee problem.

0:10:39 > 0:10:43Which again is just the volume of work on my older body, if you like.

0:10:43 > 0:10:46But it is kind of holding together. I can see the finish line in sight,

0:10:46 > 0:10:50so it only has to hold together for another nine weeks.

0:10:50 > 0:10:52If I can get to the starting line in one piece,

0:10:52 > 0:10:55I stand a good chance of getting a medal.

0:10:59 > 0:11:01Don't go away, still plenty to come here on Sport XIV.

0:11:03 > 0:11:05The thing I am definitely looking forward to

0:11:05 > 0:11:08is going to Hampden Park and being part of that team, Scotland.

0:11:12 > 0:11:14Having them here, even though they have won medals,

0:11:14 > 0:11:17they are just the exact same as I am.

0:11:17 > 0:11:18They are here to train.

0:11:18 > 0:11:22If they are lifting those weights, I want to lift them weights as well!

0:11:22 > 0:11:24Push you on a bit.

0:11:24 > 0:11:28You heard earlier on about the comeback from John Buchanan.

0:11:28 > 0:11:31Here is another story about somebody else rolling back the years.

0:11:31 > 0:11:32Four years ago,

0:11:32 > 0:11:37gymnast Adam Cox pulled out of the 2010 Games just before they started.

0:11:37 > 0:11:40After two years in retirement he is back

0:11:40 > 0:11:43as captain of what he says is our greatest ever team.

0:11:51 > 0:11:54This will be my third Games, but it should be my fourth.

0:11:56 > 0:11:58Let's get the sports news, over to David.

0:11:58 > 0:12:00Scotland's athletes have delayed heading out

0:12:00 > 0:12:02to the Commonwealth Games

0:12:02 > 0:12:05but one Scot definitely not going at all is the gymnast, Adam Cox.

0:12:05 > 0:12:08'Sports Report on BBC Radio Scotland.'

0:12:08 > 0:12:11'Scottish Gymnastics sack their senior coach,

0:12:11 > 0:12:13'throwing the Commonwealth Games hopes into doubt...'

0:12:13 > 0:12:15My coach was dismissed by Scottish Gymnastics

0:12:15 > 0:12:16two days before we flew out.

0:12:16 > 0:12:20It was just an awkward situation. I decided not to compete in Delhi.

0:12:20 > 0:12:24He was like a second dad to me. I retired for two years.

0:12:24 > 0:12:26I went and got my teaching degree

0:12:26 > 0:12:29and I started teaching in West Lothian Council.

0:12:29 > 0:12:31It was summer 2012, just after the Olympics, I seen how well

0:12:31 > 0:12:35the boys were getting on, doing a fantastic job, and looked at some

0:12:35 > 0:12:37of the boys who would be in contention

0:12:37 > 0:12:40for this Commonwealth Scottish team.

0:12:40 > 0:12:43I thought, it would be a really great Games to be a part of,

0:12:43 > 0:12:46a much better way to end my gymnastics career.

0:12:46 > 0:12:49My first one was in Manchester Commonwealth Games when I was 15.

0:12:49 > 0:12:53Steve Frew, team captain, was 29, almost twice my age.

0:12:53 > 0:12:56And now I am almost going into the same situation with Frank Baines,

0:12:56 > 0:13:00who is just 17, and I'm 27, so a good ten years his elder.

0:13:00 > 0:13:03In terms of the team's Commonwealth experience

0:13:03 > 0:13:06I have got the most experience of Commonwealth Games.

0:13:06 > 0:13:10Daniel Keatings has done one Commonwealth Games, Daniel Purvis,

0:13:10 > 0:13:13Frank Baines, and Liam Davie, it will all be their first time out.

0:13:13 > 0:13:15I hope I can bring something to them

0:13:15 > 0:13:18and show them a little bit of what it is all about.

0:13:23 > 0:13:25Adam Cox. Final of the evening.

0:13:26 > 0:13:29I was feeling like I was in my prime in Melbourne.

0:13:29 > 0:13:31I went out, again, as the all-rounder,

0:13:31 > 0:13:35and I made two finals, and it was always in the back of my mind

0:13:35 > 0:13:37that I could go up and win a medal on bar.

0:13:38 > 0:13:43It is something that I talked a lot about with my old coach.

0:13:43 > 0:13:46On the day we went up, done the routine, and it hit.

0:13:46 > 0:13:50It looks so long, uses the levers so effectively. Look at that.

0:13:53 > 0:13:57Got to stick it. It is a triple. And just the pace.

0:13:57 > 0:14:02But Adam Cox, taking an opportunity to impress.

0:14:03 > 0:14:05It was a great feeling and I loved it.

0:14:05 > 0:14:08There were 12,000 people in the Rod Laver Arena that night,

0:14:08 > 0:14:10all on their feet, loving it.

0:14:10 > 0:14:13It was a great experience, one I hope to duplicate in Glasgow.

0:14:15 > 0:14:19There's the 19-year-old from Livingston taking bronze. And...

0:14:20 > 0:14:23The older you get, the shorter you have to train.

0:14:23 > 0:14:25So you need to be quite clever - shorter sessions,

0:14:25 > 0:14:27compact more into it, longer rest periods

0:14:27 > 0:14:29for your body to recover from it.

0:14:32 > 0:14:35I've got old injuries as well. I've had both my shoulders operated on,

0:14:35 > 0:14:37and my ankle, and I had a stress fracture in my spine.

0:14:37 > 0:14:41My body is not in the best in terms of ligaments and tendons and bones

0:14:41 > 0:14:44but I'm holding well together and I'm feeling really good.

0:14:45 > 0:14:47The team that we've got for this Games is incredible

0:14:47 > 0:14:50with the experience of Daniel Keatings, us both being Olympians.

0:14:50 > 0:14:55I've got quite a bit of experience in Worlds and Europeans,

0:14:55 > 0:14:57as well as the Commonwealth Games.

0:14:57 > 0:15:01Frank Baines was the fantastic Junior European Champion

0:15:01 > 0:15:02the previous time round.

0:15:02 > 0:15:05He's starting to build his successes as a senior.

0:15:05 > 0:15:08Liam Davie will be the youngster on the team

0:15:08 > 0:15:10that's not got quite the same experience

0:15:10 > 0:15:13at multi-internationals but this will be

0:15:13 > 0:15:15a good stepping stone for him as well.

0:15:15 > 0:15:18I believe that if this team go out there and do the job,

0:15:18 > 0:15:20there's no reason we couldn't come back with a gold or silver medal.

0:15:20 > 0:15:23This is definitely... This time the hand guards are going up.

0:15:23 > 0:15:28In Delhi I felt like the decision was forced up on me,

0:15:28 > 0:15:30I wasn't quite ready to let the sport go.

0:15:30 > 0:15:32I think that's why, when I retired,

0:15:32 > 0:15:35I left the gym and didn't come back for two years.

0:15:35 > 0:15:38I was probably still hurting a little bit.

0:15:38 > 0:15:41Now, I feel like I'm ready to go out and put on a fantastic show.

0:15:41 > 0:15:44We'll hopefully have the best Commonwealth Games

0:15:44 > 0:15:46so that I can say my last Commonwealth Games, it was

0:15:46 > 0:15:50the most successful team that ever was and we produced the most medals,

0:15:50 > 0:15:53something that I can remember the sport by and say goodbye properly.

0:16:01 > 0:16:03When Grant Plenderleith was playing for Stenhousemuir

0:16:03 > 0:16:06in the Scottish football leagues, he never dreamed

0:16:06 > 0:16:09of competing in front of 50,000 people at Hampden.

0:16:09 > 0:16:13That was made even less likely when he was released by the club

0:16:13 > 0:16:14in 2012.

0:16:14 > 0:16:18But that black cloud has a very shiny silver lining.

0:16:37 > 0:16:39WHISTLE BLOWS

0:16:39 > 0:16:42MUFFLED CROWD UTTERANCES

0:16:44 > 0:16:46WHISTLE BLOWS

0:16:54 > 0:16:57To get to be an international in football

0:16:57 > 0:17:00was a million miles away from the level I was at.

0:17:03 > 0:17:05I definitely looking forward to going to Hampden Park

0:17:05 > 0:17:07and being part of that Team Scotland.

0:17:11 > 0:17:15Two years ago, in March, I was playing football with Stenhousemuir.

0:17:15 > 0:17:18There was a competition. They were trying to find

0:17:18 > 0:17:21the fastest football player in the SFL.

0:17:21 > 0:17:24The grand final was today and there was a cash prize.

0:17:24 > 0:17:26I just had to be there.

0:17:29 > 0:17:32Welcome to Livingston's Almondvale Stadium,

0:17:32 > 0:17:35where you're about to witness something that probably

0:17:35 > 0:17:37comes as close as you'll get to Scottish football's version

0:17:37 > 0:17:41of a game show - The Dash For Cash.

0:17:41 > 0:17:45- Contestant number one? - Grant Plenderleith, Stenhousemuir.

0:17:47 > 0:17:50It's the quiet man, Grant Plenderleith, the winner

0:17:50 > 0:17:52with a late spurt.

0:17:53 > 0:17:56It was after the race, with a couple of journalists,

0:17:56 > 0:17:58and the question was asked,

0:17:58 > 0:18:02"Have you ever thought about a career in athletics?"

0:18:04 > 0:18:08I said I'd run years ago before I played football

0:18:08 > 0:18:13and one of them said, "Have you ever thought about going back to it

0:18:13 > 0:18:16"with Glasgow 2014 in two years' time?"

0:18:16 > 0:18:19At that point I said I'd never really thought about it.

0:18:19 > 0:18:21I went home that night, thought about it,

0:18:21 > 0:18:23came down to the track here,

0:18:23 > 0:18:26and ran open-graded two nights later.

0:18:26 > 0:18:28That's where it all started for me.

0:18:30 > 0:18:33CROWD CHANT

0:18:39 > 0:18:41Training with athletics is ongoing.

0:18:41 > 0:18:44It's even come down to weekends that I'm training all the time.

0:18:44 > 0:18:46I've not got time to think about the football.

0:18:46 > 0:18:49I thought there would be a period before the season started

0:18:49 > 0:18:51in the winter hard-training months

0:18:51 > 0:18:53that I would be thinking about football,

0:18:53 > 0:18:56when all my mates were playing games on a Saturday,

0:18:56 > 0:18:58when I'm sitting in the house or going to watch them.

0:18:58 > 0:19:01But it's never happened yet so...

0:19:01 > 0:19:03I'm glad I stuck with what I came to achieve.

0:19:03 > 0:19:06When I started back at athletics a year and a half ago,

0:19:06 > 0:19:10if you had told me I was going to be running in the Commonwealth Games

0:19:10 > 0:19:14in a month's time, I would have told you, you're having a laugh.

0:19:14 > 0:19:19It just shows that through hard work and dedication

0:19:19 > 0:19:23and commitment to something, you really can achieve your target.

0:19:29 > 0:19:31CHEERING

0:19:31 > 0:19:34In football, with it being a team sport, or any team sport,

0:19:34 > 0:19:36you could play a really good game

0:19:36 > 0:19:39and if your team-mates don't perform and you get beat,

0:19:39 > 0:19:40it feels quite bad.

0:19:40 > 0:19:44You know you've tried your hardest and your team-mates haven't.

0:19:44 > 0:19:47That's the joys of a team sport, whereas - and you've got

0:19:47 > 0:19:50the reverse effect sometimes as well - you're maybe not playing

0:19:50 > 0:19:52as good, but you've got everyone around you to pick you up.

0:19:52 > 0:19:55Whereas athletics, if you have a good run, you win the race.

0:19:55 > 0:19:59So it's completely down to you performing on the day

0:19:59 > 0:20:02whereas football, you've got team-mates supporting you.

0:20:04 > 0:20:09I like the athletics situation that I know

0:20:09 > 0:20:11it's all down to what I do

0:20:11 > 0:20:14and if I prepare myself correctly, I'll get a good race.

0:20:14 > 0:20:16I became a lot more dedicated to myself,

0:20:16 > 0:20:19and had to make a lot of strict cuts.

0:20:22 > 0:20:24I wouldn't say it's a regret but my biggest miss is

0:20:24 > 0:20:29in the last year since I've taken athletics serious again,

0:20:29 > 0:20:32is I'm missing nights out with my pals.

0:20:32 > 0:20:36I'm doing it for a reason, and they are good as well.

0:20:36 > 0:20:38They're not constantly texting me, saying,

0:20:38 > 0:20:40"Are you coming out tonight? We're all going out."

0:20:40 > 0:20:42They give me space and freedom and they know

0:20:42 > 0:20:44that it's for a good cause.

0:20:44 > 0:20:49Thankfully now, I've got a reason to show that I've made the sacrifice

0:20:49 > 0:20:50and it's paid off.

0:20:50 > 0:20:53It was more like you could go out on a Saturday night,

0:20:53 > 0:20:56have a drink, go up the town.

0:20:56 > 0:21:00You would feel, the Sunday, you would struggle,

0:21:00 > 0:21:01sometimes even the Monday.

0:21:01 > 0:21:04Back to training was normally on a Tuesday

0:21:04 > 0:21:07whereas you actually train Sunday, Monday,

0:21:07 > 0:21:10so you can't afford three days to recover.

0:21:10 > 0:21:13When I first started back, I did have a couple of drinks

0:21:13 > 0:21:17every now and then and Sunday, Mondays, it was sessions lost

0:21:17 > 0:21:20so these days I can't afford... Every session counts.

0:21:20 > 0:21:22If you lose a session, you're going backwards.

0:21:22 > 0:21:24When I started off, I was raw.

0:21:24 > 0:21:27I got tips and coaching points and it's helped me progress

0:21:27 > 0:21:29as an athlete.

0:21:29 > 0:21:32If I see a guy I can pass the same tips onto,

0:21:32 > 0:21:34then they will listen

0:21:34 > 0:21:36and they're happy to listen to what I'm telling them,

0:21:36 > 0:21:38as well as the coach.

0:21:38 > 0:21:41There's definitely a lot of work to be done,

0:21:41 > 0:21:43which is also a positive.

0:21:43 > 0:21:45It means there's room for improvement,

0:21:45 > 0:21:49keep bringing my times down, progressing to the next level.

0:21:49 > 0:21:52Something I'm definitely looking forward to is going to Hampden Park

0:21:52 > 0:21:55and being part of that Team Scotland,

0:21:55 > 0:21:56The atmosphere will be incredible.

0:22:00 > 0:22:03Here with a round-up of some of the other stories making the news

0:22:03 > 0:22:05is Rhona McLeod.

0:22:11 > 0:22:13The final faces have been added to Team Scotland

0:22:13 > 0:22:18and every one of those 310 athletes is in the right frame of mind.

0:22:19 > 0:22:21A lot of people have raised the bar

0:22:21 > 0:22:24and put on their best performances

0:22:24 > 0:22:27and made sure that they get into the team.

0:22:27 > 0:22:30The atmosphere is beginning to build up,

0:22:30 > 0:22:32especially after today's announcements.

0:22:32 > 0:22:35Everybody is looking forward to the opening.

0:22:35 > 0:22:37In terms of where our strength is,

0:22:37 > 0:22:40it's back to where we've traditionally been,

0:22:40 > 0:22:41in terms of the bowls,

0:22:41 > 0:22:46the shooting, the swimming and now with athletics, going forward.

0:22:46 > 0:22:50- COMMENTATOR:- 'This gymnastics team from Great Britain

0:22:50 > 0:22:53'step forward to receive a bronze medal.'

0:22:53 > 0:22:57That successful gymnastics Team GB from London

0:22:57 > 0:22:58will be adversaries next month.

0:22:58 > 0:23:02English star Louis Smith is relishing the battle.

0:23:03 > 0:23:05It's going to be a clash of the titans.

0:23:05 > 0:23:08You've got half of the Great Britain squad in the Scottish team,

0:23:08 > 0:23:10half of them in the English team.

0:23:10 > 0:23:11It's going to be a real clash.

0:23:11 > 0:23:13I'm really excited.

0:23:13 > 0:23:16I don't normally get excited in competitions.

0:23:16 > 0:23:18You've got a bit of anxiety, a bit of nerves.

0:23:18 > 0:23:20I've come back off doing nothing,

0:23:20 > 0:23:24I've come out just to want to enjoy the Commonwealth Games,

0:23:24 > 0:23:26get that feeling back again.

0:23:28 > 0:23:30COMMENTATOR: 'It's going to be a glorious win.

0:23:31 > 0:23:34'Mo Farah for Great Britain.

0:23:34 > 0:23:35'It's gold!'

0:23:35 > 0:23:37It's been confirmed that Mo Farah will compete in Glasgow

0:23:37 > 0:23:41in the 5,000m and 10,000m.

0:23:41 > 0:23:43There's good and there's bad news for fans at the Games.

0:23:43 > 0:23:47Usain Bolt is a step closer to Glasgow

0:23:47 > 0:23:50while fellow Jamaican Yohan Blake has definitely ruled himself out.

0:23:53 > 0:23:55Here's a story that defines the word courage.

0:23:55 > 0:23:58Wheelchair racer Meggan Dawson-Farrell

0:23:58 > 0:24:00never considered a career in athletics

0:24:00 > 0:24:02during her teenage years.

0:24:02 > 0:24:04But she's overcome health issues and hardship

0:24:04 > 0:24:09to take her place on the starting line at Glasgow 2014.

0:24:09 > 0:24:12I'd gone through school thinking I couldn't do sport.

0:24:14 > 0:24:16But the teenage Meggan Dawson-Farrell's life

0:24:16 > 0:24:18was about to change forever,

0:24:18 > 0:24:20thanks to a surprise from her mum.

0:24:20 > 0:24:21My plan was going on holiday

0:24:21 > 0:24:24and my mum told me she was taking me to sports camp.

0:24:24 > 0:24:29It was to get kids with spina bifida into different things

0:24:29 > 0:24:31and get them out there.

0:24:31 > 0:24:33I got there eventually, kicking and screaming.

0:24:33 > 0:24:36By the time I'd got there

0:24:36 > 0:24:39and the days were over and my mum came back to pick me up,

0:24:39 > 0:24:41I didn't want to go home because

0:24:41 > 0:24:43I had so much fun.

0:24:43 > 0:24:47Despite holding the Scottish record at every distance

0:24:47 > 0:24:48in her class,

0:24:48 > 0:24:51Meggan's biggest opponent, at times, has been her own body

0:24:51 > 0:24:55with continued bouts of bad health stalling her career.

0:24:56 > 0:25:00I carry a bacteria that's in my kidneys

0:25:00 > 0:25:02that have been playing up recently.

0:25:02 > 0:25:05The antibiotics for it aren't really working.

0:25:05 > 0:25:09I'm having to go into hospital

0:25:09 > 0:25:13soon to see what they can do about it.

0:25:13 > 0:25:15It's kind of been up and down, in and out of training

0:25:15 > 0:25:17because I've been poorly.

0:25:17 > 0:25:20I've had a couple of injuries since then as well.

0:25:20 > 0:25:22I was out training with my dad

0:25:22 > 0:25:26and I managed to put my arm through my spoke in my chair.

0:25:26 > 0:25:31I did a full rotation so I damaged my ligaments in my arm.

0:25:33 > 0:25:35- Yep.- You put this up again, didn't you?

0:25:39 > 0:25:43You almost need to...not plan massively far ahead.

0:25:43 > 0:25:46You have to have the goal of where you want to be

0:25:46 > 0:25:49but having the flexibility of knowing that

0:25:49 > 0:25:51every once in a while you might lose her for a couple of weeks.

0:25:51 > 0:25:54As long as the trend is improving,

0:25:54 > 0:25:56we're happy with how she does.

0:25:56 > 0:26:01For Meggan, what we did, we looked at where we could have

0:26:01 > 0:26:03the biggest impact on her performance.

0:26:03 > 0:26:06We decided that her ability to keep her posture in her chair

0:26:06 > 0:26:12and develop power would have an impact on her performance.

0:26:12 > 0:26:14A lot of our programme is driven towards that.

0:26:15 > 0:26:17The session wasn't that bad this morning.

0:26:17 > 0:26:19He was nicer to me.

0:26:19 > 0:26:24Usually it's a lot harder, although I was kind of dying quietly,

0:26:24 > 0:26:26slowly but surely,

0:26:26 > 0:26:29but I enjoy them anyway.

0:26:29 > 0:26:32It's good to have hard sessions in there

0:26:32 > 0:26:34as well as slightly easier ones.

0:26:35 > 0:26:37You really are giving me over.

0:26:38 > 0:26:39For once.

0:26:43 > 0:26:45I'll just crawl, thank you.

0:26:45 > 0:26:47If you're not enjoying what you're doing,

0:26:47 > 0:26:49why are you doing it?

0:26:49 > 0:26:50You have to enjoy it.

0:26:50 > 0:26:51Make jokes about things!

0:26:54 > 0:26:56I have goals.

0:26:57 > 0:27:00We're eventually starting to work towards them again.

0:27:00 > 0:27:01They're coming so fast now!

0:27:01 > 0:27:06Erm, at the moment, because of having the injuries

0:27:06 > 0:27:10and illness, I'd love to get in the final.

0:27:10 > 0:27:13And then it's anyone's game.

0:27:13 > 0:27:16I'd love to come home with a medal from a home Games.

0:27:16 > 0:27:19But in the end, just being there

0:27:19 > 0:27:21is an amazing experience in itself

0:27:21 > 0:27:25because it'll be my first major competition.

0:27:26 > 0:27:28COMMENTATOR: 'It all comes down to this.

0:27:28 > 0:27:31'A chance to win an Olympic medal.'

0:27:32 > 0:27:35If Meggan ever needed inspiration during

0:27:35 > 0:27:38an early-morning weight session, she need not look too far.

0:27:38 > 0:27:43Meggan is an inspiration for a lot of other athletes in here as well.

0:27:43 > 0:27:48She enjoys the environment of who she trains with.

0:27:48 > 0:27:53She really adds to the place. A good addition to the team here.

0:27:53 > 0:27:55Even having them here,

0:27:55 > 0:27:57even though they've won medals,

0:27:57 > 0:27:59they're the just the same as I am,

0:27:59 > 0:28:01they're here to train.

0:28:01 > 0:28:04Yeah, it's nice having people to work with as well,

0:28:04 > 0:28:08thinking, "They're lifting those weights,

0:28:08 > 0:28:10"I'm going to be lifting them weights as well!"

0:28:10 > 0:28:13It pushes you on a bit.

0:28:13 > 0:28:16It's all worth it. Having to get up early in the morning,

0:28:16 > 0:28:20coming to the gym and training in the rain

0:28:20 > 0:28:23and all that, it's so much worth it

0:28:23 > 0:28:26when you get the results that you want.

0:28:26 > 0:28:29Because I go through so much rubbish, in the end,

0:28:29 > 0:28:33I just... Having the sport keeps me going

0:28:33 > 0:28:36and because I love it so much.

0:28:36 > 0:28:39It's the one thing that does keep me so happy

0:28:39 > 0:28:41because I love it so much.

0:28:46 > 0:28:47That's it for this month's show.

0:28:47 > 0:28:49We'll be back on July 20th.

0:28:49 > 0:28:53That will be just three days before the Games begin.

0:28:53 > 0:28:55From all of us here, bye-bye.
