0:00:46 > 0:00:49For a Scotland the serious staff is less than a few weeks away and we

0:00:49 > 0:00:56will find out to Craig Levein and company have made it for the play-

0:00:56 > 0:00:59offs for euro 2012. The friendly against Denmark was hugely

0:00:59 > 0:01:02significant tonight. We will hear from Pat Nevin shortly after we

0:01:02 > 0:01:06have seen half an hour of highlights with commentary from

0:01:06 > 0:01:16another former Scotland international, John Robertson and

0:01:16 > 0:01:20

0:01:20 > 0:01:28European Championship begins. The building blocks will be laid

0:01:28 > 0:01:35tonight. In the last five matches against Denmark, the Scots have

0:01:35 > 0:01:40lost without scoring a single goal. They Danes themselves have

0:01:40 > 0:01:48qualification on their mind as well. They have no way lying in wait for

0:01:48 > 0:01:54them in one month's time. -- Norway. This match is as important for the

0:01:54 > 0:02:01visitors as it is for the hosts. Craig Levine leading the Scotland

0:02:01 > 0:02:09side last night. A couple of survivors against the last match in

0:02:09 > 0:02:132004 -- from the last match against Denmark in 2004. Starts for Robert

0:02:13 > 0:02:23Snodgrass and Danny Wilson. Some familiar names in that Denmark team.

0:02:23 > 0:02:24

0:02:24 > 0:02:30Sorensen gets his 94th cap. Christian Eriksen looking exciting.

0:02:30 > 0:02:37A few under 21 graduates on the bench for the Scottish. David

0:02:37 > 0:02:46Goodwillie is a Blackburn player. Anders Lindegaard heads up the

0:02:46 > 0:02:51bench for the Danes. The referee is from Malta. He was involved and the

0:02:51 > 0:03:00referee strike and had been due to take part in the Cup final before

0:03:00 > 0:03:10it. In 1975, Scotland last beat Denmark, in the qualifiers for euro

0:03:10 > 0:03:10

0:03:10 > 0:03:1576. Winning tonight could give their side a boost for the games

0:03:15 > 0:03:25next month. Three wins out of three should seal the play-off for the

0:03:25 > 0:03:25

0:03:25 > 0:04:13Apology for the loss of subtitles for 47 seconds

0:04:13 > 0:04:20He seems happy with the way it is Sorensen. Excellent play. He

0:04:20 > 0:04:30dropped the shoulder, put it in. That is what Scotland need to do,

0:04:30 > 0:04:58

0:04:58 > 0:05:04He scored against West Ham, not a They must keep passing. An extra

0:05:04 > 0:05:14man in midfield. This is exactly what Craig Levein will be looking

0:05:14 > 0:05:29

0:05:29 > 0:05:32for, just that final pass was too in some quarters and in others as

0:05:32 > 0:05:37an international challenge match. That was the latter. Scott Brown

0:05:37 > 0:05:47does not give anything up. That was good and old fashioned. Scott Brown

0:05:47 > 0:06:02

0:06:02 > 0:06:12gets the ball first. It does look He is clutching his ankle. That is

0:06:12 > 0:06:23

0:06:23 > 0:06:33a disappointment for Scott Brown. the Danish one. Running along the

0:06:33 > 0:06:37

0:06:37 > 0:06:47line. Brown's pain can mean an introduction for Don Cowie. He is

0:06:47 > 0:06:57

0:06:57 > 0:07:07doing well for himself, moving to Snodgrass could have played that

0:07:07 > 0:07:22

0:07:22 > 0:07:32use his feet in the end. That is top-class goalkeeping. A wonderful

0:07:32 > 0:07:34

0:07:34 > 0:07:44save. A wonderful reverse pass. Krohn-Delhi hit it with power, but

0:07:44 > 0:07:54

0:07:54 > 0:08:00this is why McGregor is so well hits it too hard. This is world

0:08:00 > 0:08:10class. A great touch, but that is instinctive goalkeeping at its

0:08:10 > 0:08:11

0:08:11 > 0:08:21highest quality. Don Cowie has come on, his 4th cap. A stop-start

0:08:21 > 0:08:39

0:08:39 > 0:08:48beginning to his career. He came on pressure by Jacobsen. Promising for

0:08:48 > 0:08:53the hosts. Don Cowie does this best. Box-to-box player. He gets himself

0:08:53 > 0:09:03forward. Difficult to mark. It is fantastic to see him becoming a

0:09:03 > 0:09:17

0:09:17 > 0:09:21That is a brilliant start for Scotland. Just what they wanted.

0:09:21 > 0:09:29Charlie Adam takes the credit. The goalkeeper touched it on its way

0:09:29 > 0:09:34through but he will not care at all. His first international goal. What

0:09:34 > 0:09:44matters is that Scotland are in front. The great ball and difficult

0:09:44 > 0:09:51

0:09:51 > 0:10:01to defend. I am pretty sure that being taken off for his ankle as a

0:10:01 > 0:10:35

0:10:35 > 0:10:40And a promising situation for Denmark here. Yes, I think he got a

0:10:40 > 0:10:50bit of a ball and a bit of the man. The referee is being very sharp.

0:10:50 > 0:10:56

0:10:56 > 0:11:01This is a good position to swing it Eriksen and he has found the net!

0:11:01 > 0:11:06The Scotland goalkeeper is left red-faced by that. Christian

0:11:06 > 0:11:10Eriksen has found the net. They gave him praise for that wonderful

0:11:10 > 0:11:15save but that goes down as a mistake. He got caught underneath

0:11:15 > 0:11:20the ball. That was a shocker. He will be very disappointed with

0:11:20 > 0:11:29himself. He is a top-class goalkeeper. For letting that in, he

0:11:29 > 0:11:35will be annoyed. It has been like that all day in Glasgow, with rain

0:11:35 > 0:11:45thundering down on the Park. players do like a wet surface, but

0:11:45 > 0:11:54

0:11:54 > 0:11:59I am afraid that is too much! It Cristian Eriksen! He is a wonderful

0:11:59 > 0:12:04player, he plays in an area like that and has no other thought and

0:12:04 > 0:12:14to go straight for the goal. Does not catch it will and it is saved,

0:12:14 > 0:12:25

0:12:25 > 0:12:29but what a good player and he is Danish side. It is a good save from

0:12:30 > 0:12:33Allan McGregor, making amends for the mistake that led to the

0:12:33 > 0:12:39equaliser. That is great goalkeeping and why he is such a

0:12:39 > 0:12:46great goalkeeper. A wonderful instinct. He made a mistake, how

0:12:46 > 0:12:56does he respond? It world-class save, it shows what he is about.

0:12:56 > 0:13:14

0:13:14 > 0:13:20The Danes are threatening the game. Snodgrass gets his first

0:13:20 > 0:13:26international goal in his third cap! And they have a crucial lead

0:13:26 > 0:13:35just before the interval. The brilliantly taken. A fantastic goal

0:13:35 > 0:13:39and it starts at the beginning. Wonderful from Gary Caldwell, a

0:13:39 > 0:13:49wonderful cross to Kenny Miller, a wonderful header, and is Super goal

0:13:49 > 0:14:08

0:14:08 > 0:14:14for Scotland! A moment that will half-time whistle. Scotland getting

0:14:14 > 0:14:18back in front, the lead given to them initially. Charlie Adam has

0:14:18 > 0:14:24taken credit and Allan McGregor mistake -- Allan McGregor's mistake

0:14:24 > 0:14:32led to the free kick. And on the interval, Robert Snodgrass has

0:14:32 > 0:14:39Scotland in front in the it -- in the International Stadium in this

0:14:39 > 0:14:45match. It does not look like August, but I can assure you it is! It is

0:14:45 > 0:14:49not a big crowd inside Hampden tonight, but those here are being

0:14:49 > 0:14:58given a decent friendly international between Scotland and

0:14:58 > 0:15:08Denmark. And it will definitely be fall for next week's qualifiers.

0:15:08 > 0:15:09

0:15:09 > 0:15:16The Danes have made three changes at half-time. They have brought on

0:15:16 > 0:15:26a blind macro. And they have brought on Niki Zimling. -- they

0:15:26 > 0:16:04

0:16:04 > 0:16:14have brought on of Lasse Schone. nearly caught out again. -- Allan

0:16:14 > 0:16:33

0:16:33 > 0:16:39McGregor. He did well to knock it for Smith. It is good support play

0:16:39 > 0:16:42from Morrison in the corner, he takes a bit of pressure off and

0:16:42 > 0:16:48gives the defenders chance to get back together again. The first time

0:16:48 > 0:16:54they have made the Danish defence think in the second half. There

0:16:54 > 0:16:59were too many touches from James Morrison. He has got a chance with

0:16:59 > 0:17:04his right foot but he has to get it in, and he is crowded out

0:17:05 > 0:17:08eventually. The Danes work it so well that they get the kick. Under

0:17:08 > 0:17:18pressure, Denmark, and that is stuck in the ground! Thomas

0:17:18 > 0:17:23Sorensen. Smith must have thought he got his first Scotland goal.

0:17:23 > 0:17:33just tried to close it back and there was a puddle. That is a very

0:17:33 > 0:17:51

0:17:51 > 0:17:58good save from Thomas Sorensen. it is not Denmark's strongest team

0:17:58 > 0:18:03or Scotland's. And this is Cristian Eriksen, who has already made a

0:18:03 > 0:18:11good impression. And a good save from Allan McGregor. He took an

0:18:11 > 0:18:21eternity to get that away and Allan McGregor held on. That is another

0:18:21 > 0:18:40

0:18:40 > 0:18:50Nicklas Pedersen. Wonderful play again, he knows he wants to play

0:18:50 > 0:18:50

0:18:50 > 0:20:27Apology for the loss of subtitles for 47 seconds

0:20:27 > 0:20:36from Denmark, and knocking it Both teams have helped the

0:20:36 > 0:20:46defenders and well. Certainly. Smith is waiting in the middle,

0:20:46 > 0:21:12

0:21:12 > 0:21:18situation here. Wonderful football again and a decent effort, a good

0:21:18 > 0:21:24strike. Allan McGregor again getting behind it and just as well

0:21:24 > 0:21:27for Scotland that he did not seek a run wide left of him. Again,

0:21:27 > 0:21:33Denmark showing they are a quality side. It is not their strongest

0:21:33 > 0:21:39team, but they have quality players. Another opportunity for Denmark

0:21:39 > 0:21:44here! And well caught out by Gary Caldwell! It was imperative he did

0:21:44 > 0:21:50that and he did. Brilliant defending, Gary Caldwell using his

0:21:50 > 0:21:55experience. They could not keep up with the wide run at some he got to

0:21:55 > 0:22:05the threat and wonderful athleticism to clear it. And he was

0:22:05 > 0:22:05

0:22:05 > 0:23:06Apology for the loss of subtitles for 47 seconds

0:23:06 > 0:23:16Nicholas Pedersen. Seven yards out, you have to hit the target. There

0:23:16 > 0:23:33

0:23:33 > 0:23:39is just enough pressure put on them, It hit the palms of the goalkeeper.

0:23:39 > 0:23:49Thomas Sorensen scampering across. Super strike from Barry Bannan. An

0:23:49 > 0:24:16

0:24:16 > 0:24:25equally good save from the Stoke wonderful ball from Michael

0:24:25 > 0:24:35Silberbauer. What an opportunity. Scotland are surviving at the

0:24:35 > 0:25:12

0:25:12 > 0:25:22the Achilles, unintentional of lad all night. The audacity to try

0:25:22 > 0:25:46

0:25:46 > 0:25:56from there! He has made McGregor around the 18 yard area. He just

0:25:56 > 0:26:14

0:26:14 > 0:26:24every set-piece tonight. A corner kick to defend as well. I think the

0:26:24 > 0:26:41

0:26:41 > 0:26:47big number three was in as well. It first win over Denmark since 1975

0:26:47 > 0:26:51and more importantly, a morale- booster ahead of Czechoslovakia and

0:26:51 > 0:27:00Lithuania when it really matters next month for Craig Levine and the

0:27:00 > 0:27:05team. They will be in the group European Championship qualifiers.

0:27:05 > 0:27:10Danny Wilson had a good game in defence. He is only 19. He played

0:27:10 > 0:27:15like a man with 10 years more experience than that. He was good,

0:27:15 > 0:27:24but so was just about everybody in this team. Gary Caldwell, the

0:27:24 > 0:27:31opposite end of the spectrum. Alan McGregor, despite that the state,

0:27:31 > 0:27:40pulled out some superb saves as well. A great win for the Scottish.

0:27:40 > 0:27:432-1. For spells in the game I felt that we did play in the manner that

0:27:43 > 0:27:47I would like to see us play every time we take the field,

0:27:47 > 0:27:51particularly attacking. We played some lengthy spells when we passed

0:27:51 > 0:27:57well and the movement of the ball was good. We were brave in

0:27:57 > 0:28:01possession as well. Admittedly, the Danes had a lot of pressure in the

0:28:01 > 0:28:05second half and they tired out. I made some changes and introduced

0:28:05 > 0:28:10some less physical players. The signs are encouraging. We are

0:28:10 > 0:28:14getting better. If you go back one year to the Sweden game, you will

0:28:14 > 0:28:20see a significant improvement. We cannot guarantee anything, but I do

0:28:20 > 0:28:26know that we are improving. It was tough. Denmark Ra fantastic team.

0:28:27 > 0:28:33They put us under a lot of pressure in the second half. But Danny and

0:28:33 > 0:28:36Gary were outstanding and they kept on. The first after gusts 50

0:28:36 > 0:28:41minutes to get to grips with the game but I think we played some

0:28:41 > 0:28:46decent stuff. -- the first half took us 15 minutes. It's pleasing

0:28:46 > 0:28:51result. I thought we started good in the first 10 minutes and then

0:28:51 > 0:28:55Scotland was the better team. We had the first big chance, for

0:28:55 > 0:29:03Dennis Rommedahl. We made an own goal and we were lucky, I think,

0:29:03 > 0:29:06that the Scottish goalkeeper will not be satisfied. And

0:29:06 > 0:29:10psychologically they made a goal in the last minutes of the first half,

0:29:10 > 0:29:16but I thought in the second half we had all of the play. It is a

0:29:16 > 0:29:21balance in midfield. Don Cowie did a fantastic job. We ended up with

0:29:21 > 0:29:24quite an attacking team. Don Cowie is an attacking player and so are

0:29:24 > 0:29:32Charlie and James Morrison. Steven Naismith is an attacking player and

0:29:32 > 0:29:38so is Robert Snodgrass. So we ended up really without the energy for us

0:29:38 > 0:29:42to get forward and to get back. That resulted in some tired legs

0:29:42 > 0:29:46and the Danes are exploiting us in midfield in particular and at times

0:29:46 > 0:29:51down the sides. But that is a top team that we are playing, way above

0:29:51 > 0:29:56us in the rankings. I always work hard first and foremost for

0:29:56 > 0:30:01Scotland. We are playing the right way. We are definitely progressing.

0:30:01 > 0:30:08It bodes well for the up-and-coming qualifiers. Do you expect a similar

0:30:08 > 0:30:18style game against the Czech Republic? Yes. There are different

0:30:18 > 0:30:19

0:30:19 > 0:30:24things that the two teams do. They are quite dangerous. The players

0:30:24 > 0:30:31will have learned a lot. For the double-header, they get plenty of

0:30:31 > 0:30:35time with them. And we can look at some of the things in today's match

0:30:35 > 0:30:38and see if we can improve. Sometimes when we analyse

0:30:38 > 0:30:42friendlies, we think that the performance is more important than

0:30:42 > 0:30:47the result. I wonder about that tonight because that will be a

0:30:47 > 0:30:51result to give Scotland a big boost. Absolutely. Everybody talks about

0:30:51 > 0:30:55confidence and it is important. Building up a good feeling in the

0:30:55 > 0:30:59Scotland squad. You can sue the way it works. Yes, that helps, and

0:30:59 > 0:31:03winning helps as well. Winning against a very good team really

0:31:03 > 0:31:07helps. I know there were large parts of the game when Denmark were

0:31:07 > 0:31:11the better side, holding the ball in the second half particularly,

0:31:11 > 0:31:14and Scotland could not get near them in midfield. But sometimes

0:31:14 > 0:31:17with teams that are technically better, you need to get a result

0:31:17 > 0:31:21and Scotland got that. significant improvement was the

0:31:21 > 0:31:28phrase used them. When you look back a year to the Swedish debacle,

0:31:28 > 0:31:31that is progress. That is the big difference. Back then Scotland were

0:31:31 > 0:31:36getting beaten and they looked frightened. They did not look like

0:31:36 > 0:31:39a group, structured the right way. But they did to that. Even though

0:31:39 > 0:31:45they were not in possession you were not fearful for large parts of

0:31:45 > 0:31:50the game. Highly satisfying for Scotland tonight, scoring two top

0:31:50 > 0:32:00quality goals. No. 1, Charlie Adam's free kick, which was just

0:32:00 > 0:32:04

0:32:04 > 0:32:08the delivery that he would bond in and does not care who gets the

0:32:08 > 0:32:14touch, so fantastic play from Charlie Adam and he is obviously

0:32:14 > 0:32:18capable of doing that. And he has done that all the time. This is one

0:32:18 > 0:32:24of the best Scotland goals for a long time. This is what you call

0:32:24 > 0:32:30and to end, isn't it? And good passing play, but this is brilliant.

0:32:30 > 0:32:34Nothing for defender can do. Kenny Miller knew what he wanted to do

0:32:34 > 0:32:39and obviously Robert Snodgrass at the back has to be brave and he is

0:32:39 > 0:32:43brave. And when they go back and meet up for the next game, but will

0:32:43 > 0:32:48show that to the players and say, by the way, you can play and you

0:32:48 > 0:32:53can pass through good teams. And I think there were periods throughout

0:32:53 > 0:33:00the game that they were capable and they did do that, but not all of

0:33:00 > 0:33:05the game. But that will happen at the Czech Republic. Our McGregor

0:33:05 > 0:33:13conceded a goal about which he will have nightmares -- Allan McGregor.

0:33:13 > 0:33:19But also he had top draw saves. is a shot stopper and we have seen

0:33:19 > 0:33:23that for years from him. That is a particularly bad one and he will

0:33:23 > 0:33:27have nightmares about, maybe not him because he is confident, but

0:33:27 > 0:33:32there is nothing more to be said and that was a bad mistake. And he

0:33:32 > 0:33:37has had that problem with Rangers. The flashy stuff that people love,

0:33:38 > 0:33:47he is as fabulous as Craig Gordon, and that is high praise from the!

0:33:47 > 0:33:50But also, this is your problem. the Czech Republic will look at

0:33:50 > 0:33:57this and Allan McGregor will expect to be tested with cross balls from

0:33:57 > 0:34:02them. That ball was moving but anything that comes in across...

0:34:02 > 0:34:07And this is particularly bad. I give him some excuse for the bad

0:34:07 > 0:34:11conditions, but if you are a goalkeeper and come for a cross,

0:34:11 > 0:34:17you have to make it yours it is your fault. So I suspect he will

0:34:17 > 0:34:21have to work on it between now and the Czech Republic. Scotland scored

0:34:21 > 0:34:30twice and could have scored more goals, although we were more biased

0:34:30 > 0:34:35tonight. But Denmark had better chances. Obviously Miller and

0:34:35 > 0:34:39Steven Naismith know how to play together. This is good play, he

0:34:39 > 0:34:44plays straight to the feed. And Steven Naismith is through, it is

0:34:44 > 0:34:49just in front of him and it is a fabulous chance. Smith chases it

0:34:49 > 0:34:57down and that is an important job for Scotland because Kenny Miller

0:34:57 > 0:35:01does it and now someone else can do it. There are only scraps and a few

0:35:01 > 0:35:05chances, but you see Scotland play as we know are capable and those

0:35:05 > 0:35:10coming on such as Smith he may be able to add something and that is

0:35:10 > 0:35:16important if you have a campaign. And let's look at to a result we

0:35:16 > 0:35:21hope is not too significant for the progress we hope for and the Euro

0:35:21 > 0:35:252012 play-offs. It was the Czech Republic in Prague, we play them in

0:35:25 > 0:35:30a couple of weeks at Hampden, and this was a bad night for Scotland

0:35:30 > 0:35:34and hopefully we will not count the cost of this at a later stage. We

0:35:35 > 0:35:39said we were not happy about the tactics of Craig Levein in this

0:35:39 > 0:35:44game, at too defensive. But I do not think he has made many other

0:35:44 > 0:35:48mistakes. If you play those tactics we did tonight against the Czech

0:35:48 > 0:35:52Republic with that attitude, and a few more players capable of coming

0:35:52 > 0:36:00in to strengthen the side -- to strengthen the side slightly, we

0:36:00 > 0:36:06have a great chance of winning that game and we know we need to. Craig

0:36:06 > 0:36:11said it was 1848 places above us in the rankings, and they are also

0:36:11 > 0:36:14significantly above the Czech Republic -- 40 places. Everybody

0:36:14 > 0:36:19looks at the Czech Republic and remembers the great teams and

0:36:19 > 0:36:24players. But even in the first game, I was not over impressed and I

0:36:24 > 0:36:29spoke to Petr Cech after and he said it was possibly the weakest

0:36:29 > 0:36:34Czech Republic team he has played in. So Scotland can go for this.

0:36:34 > 0:36:37They have a great opportunity. They have to play their best and we hope

0:36:37 > 0:36:43everyone is back, it would be lovely if Darren Fletcher was one

0:36:43 > 0:36:47of them, but there is a great opportunity. We beat a better team

0:36:47 > 0:36:52tonight. So everybody behind us and a big night at Hampden, a full

0:36:52 > 0:36:57house and hopefully not raining, we have every opportunity. Let's

0:36:57 > 0:37:03refresh our memories to the group table. Scotland have played four

0:37:03 > 0:37:09and four points, forget about Spain. It is at -- it is about the fight

0:37:09 > 0:37:15at the bottom. A double header in September and October. The Czech

0:37:15 > 0:37:19Republic at Hampden followed by Lithuania, and two a weight games,

0:37:19 > 0:37:23Liechtenstein and Spain. Realistically, do Scotland have to

0:37:23 > 0:37:27win the his first three games? worry about each one up the two

0:37:27 > 0:37:33together of the most important. We have talked about the Czech

0:37:33 > 0:37:38Republic and we know what we have to do. I think it is almost in the

0:37:38 > 0:37:44hands of Scotland after that. I think if Scotland go out and beat

0:37:44 > 0:37:47the Czech Republic, this group is good enough to go and win the two

0:37:47 > 0:37:51games after that with some ease, but it is all about that and I

0:37:51 > 0:37:57cannot wait. What did tonight make you think about our chances are

0:37:57 > 0:38:02getting into the play-offs? I am lifted by it. Some good luck, but

0:38:02 > 0:38:06the group looks like it can defend. A number of players were important

0:38:07 > 0:38:11tonight. Phil Bardsley was fantastic at right back, but may be

0:38:11 > 0:38:16more than anybody else off Danny Wilson. You need centre backs that
