:00:52. > :00:58.The Scottish Cup journey called -- comes full circle. The circle began
:00:59. > :01:03.last May. Celtic are the Scottish Cup winners, 2013. The most
:01:04. > :01:10.unexpected cup journey came from Albion Rovers. Albion Rovers. The
:01:11. > :01:18.romance of the Cup, United on the trip. Raith Rovers incredibly take
:01:19. > :01:32.the lead. The magnificent journey continues. Scott Brown leathers home
:01:33. > :01:43.Celtic's seven. And it is into the wall. The final four travelled to
:01:44. > :01:57.Ibrox. Saint Johnstone are into their first-ever Scottish Cup final.
:01:58. > :02:00.Dundee United have the lead. Ciftci gets Dundee United to the Scottish
:02:01. > :02:07.Cup final. The Scottish Cup circle is complete.
:02:08. > :02:12.Good evening. Just reaching the Scottish Cup final has been a huge
:02:13. > :02:15.achievement for St Johnstone. They've never done it before in
:02:16. > :02:20.their 130 year history. They have never, ever won a major piece of
:02:21. > :02:24.silverware. Would today be the day? There was also a massive occasion
:02:25. > :02:28.for Dundee United as well, playing in front of their biggest ever
:02:29. > :02:32.support. Hoping to win the trophy for a third time and cap the season
:02:33. > :02:38.with a final flourish. With me tonight, two beaten -- beacons of
:02:39. > :02:42.neutrality, Pat Nevin who played for neither side and Billy Dodds, who
:02:43. > :02:50.played for both. Let's get to the action at Celtic Park. The usual
:02:51. > :02:54.green was replaced by an sea of tangerine, black and white.
:02:55. > :02:55.Therefore us, the St Mirren striker Steven Thompson and match
:02:56. > :03:07.commentator, Liam McLeod. The waiting is just about over for
:03:08. > :03:11.St Johnstone and Dundee United. Uncharted territory for the Perth
:03:12. > :03:16.side, who have always come up short in the last four until now. Tommy
:03:17. > :03:22.Wright with more than a little help from Stevie May, helped past their
:03:23. > :03:26.semifinal hoodoo last month. Plotting their way towards a first
:03:27. > :03:30.piece of major silverware, with the club is celebrating its 130th
:03:31. > :03:34.birthday this year. The Scottish Cup sitting proudly in bed trophy
:03:35. > :03:41.cabinet would be the perfect present. But it is a World Cup year.
:03:42. > :03:44.That means the omens are good for Dundee United. Both times they have
:03:45. > :03:50.won this competition it has come just before a World Cup final, in
:03:51. > :03:56.1994 and then in 2010. The names of Brewster, Conway and Goodwillie are
:03:57. > :04:00.written in United folklore. Their pictures adorn the walls at
:04:01. > :04:05.Tannadice. The 2014 team will have gazed that those these last four
:04:06. > :04:09.weeks, knowing they could be them. -- knowing it could be them. That is
:04:10. > :04:13.the Saint Johnstone team that beat Aberdeen in the semifinals. Dann and
:04:14. > :04:23.Millar were brilliant in the midfield. So were McQueen and
:04:24. > :04:30.upfront. Their goals have been pivotal. Dillon and Watson along
:04:31. > :04:36.with Gomis are the only survivors from the side that won four years
:04:37. > :04:42.ago. Mackay-Steven is fit. Ciftci is through the middle. Lee Croft and
:04:43. > :04:47.Nigel Hasselbaink have to deal with missing out on a starting slot, as
:04:48. > :04:51.do the much heralded youngsters, Gauld and Souttar, for United. The
:04:52. > :04:59.referee is 41-year-old Graham Thompson. It is his third Scottish
:05:00. > :05:06.Cup final, having presided over the 2009 and 2012 versions -- Craig
:05:07. > :05:11.Thomson. All set, so too, Tommy Wright. A big day for him, less than
:05:12. > :05:17.a year after replacing Steve Lomas, his compatriot, as St Johnstone
:05:18. > :05:23.manager. A wonderful atmosphere inside Celtic Park. 255 years of
:05:24. > :05:28.combined history. Just the fourth time Saints and United have met in
:05:29. > :05:35.the Scottish Cup. The Tangerines, in their new kit today. They are 2-1 up
:05:36. > :05:39.on that particular head-to-head, and one of those was on the route to
:05:40. > :05:46.their 2010 triumph. This is the biggest clash between these two
:05:47. > :05:52.Tayside rivals. Celtic Park is a sea of tangerine and black and blue and
:05:53. > :06:00.white. Mackay-Steven, looking for the run of Armstrong. Dug out by
:06:01. > :06:07.Dunne. But the spoon is finally getting a chance to play in this
:06:08. > :06:15.final. -- Wotherspoon. May, the first touch of the ball for him.
:06:16. > :06:18.Stevie May making a run, cuts inside. Always trying to get a shot
:06:19. > :06:31.away. Robertsons, who has had the
:06:32. > :06:34.wonderful 12-month period going from amateur player at Queen's Park to
:06:35. > :06:47.Scotland international and Scottish Cup finalists. An early test for
:06:48. > :06:53.Mannus. Fabulous play from Dow. A fabulous ball again. I think Ciftci
:06:54. > :07:30.meets a Porsche. -- Ciftci needs a push.
:07:31. > :07:43.It has gone through to MacLean. He could not squeeze it through.
:07:44. > :07:52.It comes onto the shoulder of Robertson, he takes a second. That
:07:53. > :07:54.is what he was looking for. I don't know if the referee did not see it,
:07:55. > :08:16.he has pulled him back. Support arriving. They know he is
:08:17. > :08:22.capable of it, maybe not from that distance. It is his first shot, he
:08:23. > :08:33.gets the shot away. People sit at the near post. -- he pulls it at the
:08:34. > :08:41.near post. MacLean was onside. Well won back. What a save from
:08:42. > :08:50.Cierzniak. A superb overlap from East Anne. I don't think Stephen
:08:51. > :08:55.MacLean can get it. It breaks and catch that sweetly. In the end,
:08:56. > :08:59.tipped over the bar. A great move from St Johnstone. They have looked
:09:00. > :09:06.the more dangerous of the two sides. They are real threat. Good at
:09:07. > :09:10.defending them and good attacking, as Wotherspoon takes. It comes
:09:11. > :09:15.across four Frazer Wright, who could not get purchase on it. I don't
:09:16. > :09:17.think he sees it until late. The ball is not the best one, but it
:09:18. > :09:32.finds its way right through. May fancies his chances against
:09:33. > :09:38.Dillon. Good defending from Dillon in the end. He knows May is fast, he
:09:39. > :09:44.has to get his body in front. He is a danger.
:09:45. > :09:57.Good defending by Watson. A split second there.
:09:58. > :10:04.It is a touch, not a lot in it but the game, every time Stevie May
:10:05. > :10:13.finds the ball, he finds MacLean and MacLean links with May. Craig
:10:14. > :10:22.Thomson sorting the ball out, eventually.
:10:23. > :10:29.It is Wotherspoon, and Cierzniak holds on for dear life. It was
:10:30. > :10:33.brilliant. He thinks he is going to have a shot, the set piece coming
:10:34. > :10:40.off the ball. Wetherspoon cuts inside. Great defending. It really
:10:41. > :10:44.is. I don't know if it was going in or not but Gunning does very well.
:10:45. > :10:45.It might have gone in, it is good defending at the same time they
:10:46. > :11:03.could have scored easily. A great ball across, Saints can't
:11:04. > :11:09.get it away. There is a big strike for hand ball, inside the box.
:11:10. > :11:17.Calamitous, great skill from down. The cutback is good. -- great skill
:11:18. > :11:20.from Ryan Dow. The ball falls to their own player, the ball strikes
:11:21. > :11:52.his hand but there is no intention. This is better from United. It is
:11:53. > :12:00.Robertson's Balling, a brilliant ball. It is Ryan Dow. Unlucky, has
:12:01. > :12:06.it come off the inside of the post? What a fabulous move. That is
:12:07. > :12:10.incredible. How unlucky can you get? The best move of the game from
:12:11. > :12:19.Dundee United. A deft touch from Ryan Dow, not of the post. It looked
:12:20. > :12:26.like it had gone in from this angle. The fourth meeting of the teams in
:12:27. > :12:31.the Scottish Cup. The first was a Saints win in 1933, they did not
:12:32. > :12:38.meet again until 1991. United went through. Anderson has hurt himself.
:12:39. > :12:47.I don't know if he has landed on his ankle. The left ankle. It looks as
:12:48. > :12:56.though he has rolled it. Strong from Ciftci, excellent work.
:12:57. > :13:07.Watson hasn't seen much of the ball in the first half. Into the final
:13:08. > :13:11.few minutes of it. Wetherspoon did not realise he had plenty of time to
:13:12. > :13:16.get it away but he has put it out of the corner anyway. When the ball
:13:17. > :13:20.breaks, great anticipation. He flashes that across the face and is
:13:21. > :13:28.not in the right place at the right time.
:13:29. > :13:51.He's recovered, Steven Anderson from that ankle knock earlier on.
:13:52. > :13:55.Great ball in as well. It's away by Robertson.
:13:56. > :14:08.A fabulous ball. The ball into a tremendous area.
:14:09. > :14:14.Wotherspoon's corner kick. In comes the keeper, misses it. Steven
:14:15. > :14:19.Anderson! It's St Johnstone into the lead, right on halftime. The dream
:14:20. > :14:29.is on for the Perth team. A Scottish Cup final goal for Steven Anderson.
:14:30. > :14:35.We talked about St Johnstone from set pieces. The keeper doesn't get
:14:36. > :14:45.anywhere near it. It's a fabulous header and a dream moment for him.
:14:46. > :14:51.You have to ask questions about Cierzniak there. Steven Anderson's
:14:52. > :14:57.fourth goal of the season. His most important goal for St Johnstone.
:14:58. > :15:00.After so much heartache in the past in cup competitions for Anderson and
:15:01. > :15:06.St Johnstone, they have given themselves a massive shot in the arm
:15:07. > :15:10.right at end of the first half of the William Hill Scottish Cup final.
:15:11. > :15:16.It is St Johnstone 1, Dundee United 0.
:15:17. > :15:22.Steven Anderson long servient with the Perth team. Six semifinal
:15:23. > :15:27.defeats at the club. A goal in the Scottish Cup final,
:15:28. > :15:34.round about the 300-appearance mark, hurtling towards that. A huge moment
:15:35. > :15:35.for him and potentially for St Johnstone football club. They have
:15:36. > :15:57.never won a major trophy. Last four Scottish Cup finals have
:15:58. > :16:02.been pretty one-sided affairs. Rankin pumping it forward. That's a
:16:03. > :16:12.free kick, no, it's not. It looked like a free kick.
:16:13. > :16:17.Play on says the referee. Frazer Wright has been decked as well
:16:18. > :16:22.inside his own box. This time it is a freak kick. There was something
:16:23. > :16:27.that happened off the ball, which I didn't see.
:16:28. > :16:31.That one is without a doubt a booking.
:16:32. > :16:39.Oh, he's so unlucky! Mannus holds on.
:16:40. > :16:48.He does absolutely everything right. It's a text book free kick, reverses
:16:49. > :16:55.it into the top corner. You're sure it's
:16:56. > :17:11.A brilliant effort. Paton flies into Dunst. -- Dunne. I think he wins the
:17:12. > :17:15.ball. How has Thompson viewed this foul? He certainly committed. He
:17:16. > :17:21.went in hard and fast. But I think he takes the ball.
:17:22. > :17:27.Oh, it's two-footed though. I didn't see that. He wins the ball, but it's
:17:28. > :17:32.two footed. It's a dangerous challenge. I think he's lucky.
:17:33. > :17:42.In from Wotherspoon. Loads of space for Wright. He's put it in with his
:17:43. > :17:49.hand. Is the ball already in? Craig Thompson is trying to sort this one
:17:50. > :17:56.out. Stevie May thinks he's put it in. Stevie May by the looks of
:17:57. > :18:05.things have given St Johnstone a 2-0 lead. Or has he changed his mind.
:18:06. > :18:11.The header is over the line, I think. Confusion reigns. It looks as
:18:12. > :18:16.though this isn't going to count. He's given the free kick. I think
:18:17. > :18:22.the ball is over the line. It's not. It's a deliberate handball.
:18:23. > :18:27.He doesn't even need to put it in with his hand. He could have put it
:18:28. > :18:37.in with his knee or his body in front. It's just a reaction thing
:18:38. > :18:39.really. He didn't bargain on them seeing that behind the goal line.
:18:40. > :18:47.Craig Thompson didn't see it. In comes the corner. Away by
:18:48. > :18:52.Eastonment -- Easton. O'Halloran gets there
:18:53. > :18:56.first. Wonderful play by hall ha. He's -- O'Halloran. They're away on
:18:57. > :19:06.the counter. Wotherspoon is going all the way
:19:07. > :19:10.himself. Cierzniak beats it away. That was a fabulous counterattack
:19:11. > :19:16.for United. They've just done a counterattack themselves. What a
:19:17. > :19:23.final. 29 minutes here. Robertson going all the way this time. He
:19:24. > :19:28.forces Mannus into the save. Wotherspoon breaks with the ball, it
:19:29. > :19:32.was a four V four, before Robertson here does the same, a great run.
:19:33. > :19:36.Mannus does well to tuck it round the post. Two counter-attacks.
:19:37. > :19:38.Here's the won wodge one. He -- Wotherspoon one. He does ever so
:19:39. > :19:52.well. They're in a hurry to take. Up comes
:19:53. > :20:36.the skipper. It just won't fall for Dundee
:20:37. > :20:43.United. Alan Mannus getting a vital touch here. It was brave. He tries
:20:44. > :20:51.to throw his head in front of it. Wilson can't get on the end of it.
:20:52. > :20:57.As I said very brave. But it hasn't fallen for Dundee United.
:20:58. > :21:16.He looks quite calm. They don't. Clock watching.
:21:17. > :21:27.He can hit from distance. Graham! He takes his first touch ever so well.
:21:28. > :21:34.It's a mis-hit. It's onto his left foot, everything he would want. He's
:21:35. > :21:38.looking for the far corner. Two feet on it too much. He can't wrap his
:21:39. > :21:42.foot around it to get it in the far corner. It's torture for the Dundee
:21:43. > :21:55.United supporters. They hit the post in what looked
:21:56. > :22:04.like a goal in the first half. How close was that? That is inches.
:22:05. > :22:09.Fabulous play from Ciftci. Skips past two men. You think it's going
:22:10. > :22:12.to nestle in the bottom corner. Dundee United really turning the
:22:13. > :22:40.screw now. That will surely win the cup for St
:22:41. > :22:46.Johnstone! Their first major trophy awaits them here. Steven MacLean
:22:47. > :22:54.with the goal that may well turn him and his team-mates into legends. You
:22:55. > :22:59.have to say the ball breaks kindly for Steven MacLean. He shows great
:23:00. > :23:03.opportunism. It's a good run from Stevie May. They get the break of
:23:04. > :23:11.the ball. Stevie goes into the challenge, the keeper does well, but
:23:12. > :23:18.when it falls, like it hasn't fallen for Dundee United today, he does
:23:19. > :23:23.well to get it in. John Rankin was unfortunate there. Steven MacLean,
:23:24. > :23:33.after such a long career, having been on the bench in 2003, whilst at
:23:34. > :23:40.Rangers, has played a starring role for write -- Tommy Wright's men.
:23:41. > :23:48.Look what it means to the big men from Belfast.
:23:49. > :23:56.When it's not your day, it's not your day. St Johnstone have been
:23:57. > :23:59.impervious to everything that Dundee United have thrown at them. They
:24:00. > :24:05.love defending. They've defended ever so well. Dundee United are
:24:06. > :24:11.committing to many to the came. They have to go for it. Here come United.
:24:12. > :24:13.Ciftci stretched his leg but could not get it from Frazer Wright. Play
:24:14. > :24:29.on says the referee. Another good play. He's been a stand
:24:30. > :24:33.out for Dundee United today. Deinjection for the Dundee United
:24:34. > :24:42.supporters. Elation for those who have made the journey from Perth.
:24:43. > :24:51.Their organisation has been exlem Prince Harry, defending --
:24:52. > :24:58.exemplary, defending incredible, at times. Frazer Wright, what he does
:24:59. > :25:04.best, throws his body in the line. Right to the end #2,-0 up and -- 2-0
:25:05. > :25:08.up and Wright puts his body in the way. Graham, and that right there
:25:09. > :25:10.sums it up. That's the biggest chance of the
:25:11. > :25:21.day. He really has to hit the target.
:25:22. > :25:29.Anderson right on halftime, Steven MacLean late on. Their names are
:25:30. > :25:32.about to be etched into St Johnstone folklore.
:25:33. > :25:37.Craig Thompson has checked his watch.
:25:38. > :25:50.St Johnstone, your time has come! History has been created and boy,
:25:51. > :25:55.they've had a long, long wait for this. For a crack at this old
:25:56. > :26:02.trophy, let alone getting their hands on it, which they will do now.
:26:03. > :26:11.A first Scottish Cup final in their 130-year history and the silverware
:26:12. > :26:13.is going to Perth. We can hear from Tommy Wright.
:26:14. > :26:20.130 years without a major trophy, sum up how that feels. Just look,
:26:21. > :26:26.tremendous. The lads were superb. I mean, the first half were chances
:26:27. > :26:29.for both teams. I can't thank them lads enough, what they've done for
:26:30. > :26:33.me since I got the job and the rest of the staff. I'm so pleased for so
:26:34. > :26:40.many people, the chairman and his dad up there and I'm proud. There
:26:41. > :26:45.will be a lot of Perth in -- people in Perth that will be prouder than I
:26:46. > :26:49.was. Could you have envisioned in your wildest dreams the season would
:26:50. > :26:55.end like this? He did say to me I had to win a trophy in my first. I
:26:56. > :27:00.said I would. Jokingly. As the cup run got on and on, we had a belief
:27:01. > :27:03.that we were going to win the cup. I watched the chance in the first half
:27:04. > :27:08.and I thought it was in. It hit the ground and just spun that little bit
:27:09. > :27:16.away. Then I knew this was going to be our day. Just sum up how that
:27:17. > :27:20.feels for you and the boys? Absolutely delighted. You wait a
:27:21. > :27:25.long time for days like these, I'm going to savour it. You were
:27:26. > :27:28.underdogs, but did you feel that you were coming in as second favourites?
:27:29. > :27:33.No, we didn't deserve to be second favourites. Last three games we beat
:27:34. > :27:39.them comfortably, no goals against us. We knew we'd beat them. Has had
:27:40. > :27:43.a fantastic impact in his first season as manager. Tell whaus he's
:27:44. > :27:50.done for you guys. From the first day he said he trusted us. We've
:27:51. > :27:55.just repaid his trust. At the fans, what a day for them. It's brilliant.
:27:56. > :28:12.They've waited a long time. They deserve it. Good man, well done.
:28:13. > :28:23.Now then. Tommy Wright leads them onto the podium to receive the
:28:24. > :28:31.William Hill Scottish Cup and what a moment this is for them. This is
:28:32. > :28:35.going to live with them forever. The 2014 William Hill Scottish Cup is St
:28:36. > :29:07.Johnstone's. St Johnstone, their first-ever major
:29:08. > :29:11.trophy. How does it feel? An unbelievable feeling. We have worked
:29:12. > :29:17.so hard for it. To win at our first attempt in a final is incredible. I
:29:18. > :29:21.hope these guys enjoy at night. It is fantastic to see so many fans in
:29:22. > :29:25.support of you. What does it mean to the players? Incredible. One third
:29:26. > :29:32.of the population of Perth has turned up today. It is incredible, I
:29:33. > :29:43.am delighted we have a trophy after all these years. You Gary Miller
:29:44. > :29:47.Jackie, that must be -- Jackie, that must be gutting. Give us a flavour
:29:48. > :29:51.of how you are feeling at the moment? Disappointed for the
:29:52. > :29:55.players, not just today, but to get us here. I have to congratulate St
:29:56. > :30:00.Johnstone winning the trophy as much as what happened just now, someone
:30:01. > :30:06.had to win it. It was not our day today. Hitting the post and the
:30:07. > :30:10.bar, they had fortune with the goal going in at half-time. The second
:30:11. > :30:14.goal ricocheting and putting it in. It was not our day today. How
:30:15. > :30:21.crucial were those elements, when the ball hit off the corner post,
:30:22. > :30:26.over the line and over the net and the Ciftci free kick. Thin lines,
:30:27. > :30:34.but that is what separates the game. There were few incidents in the
:30:35. > :30:39.match, but I still think we can lay and we took the game to them. We
:30:40. > :30:50.tried our best. We fell short with finishing. They get in your faces.
:30:51. > :30:56.Yes, it is a lot easier to create. They are fantastic season, I
:30:57. > :31:04.congratulate them on winning the trophy.
:31:05. > :31:11.The man who took St Johnstone on the road to victory. How did it feel
:31:12. > :31:17.when the goal went in? Delighted to be up 1-0 at half-time. It is a
:31:18. > :31:27.crucial time to get a goal. It changes, you can open up as well. An
:31:28. > :31:32.unbelievable celebration. You have had to wait for this. How does it
:31:33. > :31:38.feel to be part of that? It is good to be part of history. I have
:31:39. > :31:46.memories. Congratulations. Stephen, it was a tight game. Your goal helps
:31:47. > :31:50.you to victory. It is a fantastic feeling, to score in any Scottish
:31:51. > :31:57.Cup final. To score the second and put us in. A tremendous performance
:31:58. > :32:01.throughout from St Johnstone, but for you guys coming into this match
:32:02. > :32:07.as underdogs tonight, was there less pressure on you? No, we were quietly
:32:08. > :32:10.confident in ourselves and everybody else thought we were underdogs but
:32:11. > :32:15.we know we are a good side. Nobody turns is over. If we play well we
:32:16. > :32:20.know we can give anybody a game. We have qualities and they were
:32:21. > :32:26.unfortunate couple of times, but sometimes you need luck in a Cup
:32:27. > :32:31.final. We deserved. Sum up what he has done for the side? He is a
:32:32. > :32:36.fantastic manager and leader. He is a great guy. He has been fantastic
:32:37. > :32:45.for us. The transition from Steve Lomas to him has been good. He is a
:32:46. > :32:52.good older manager. It has been an historic day. I think
:32:53. > :32:56.the term is unbelievable scenes in the dressing room afterwards,
:32:57. > :33:01.champagne all over the place. Billy Dodds, you played for St Johnstone.
:33:02. > :33:06.What Walter might mean for the club? Del bobbin absolutely amazing. You
:33:07. > :33:11.have a club there, 130 years without winning anything. A trophy, to get
:33:12. > :33:14.there and the way they handled the whole occasion, they were strong in
:33:15. > :33:19.every department, defensively, midfield and attacking and they
:33:20. > :33:23.deserved it today. You can see by those celebrations they will have a
:33:24. > :33:27.fantastic night. It was a fantastic game as well. One of the best
:33:28. > :33:31.Scottish Cup finals we have seen for a few years. St Johnstone were
:33:32. > :33:35.deserved winners, weren't they? Yes, I think you can say that. You have
:33:36. > :33:39.to play intelligently as much as anything else. If you are going to
:33:40. > :33:43.win a game like that you have to play for your own strengths. They do
:33:44. > :33:49.play to their own strengths. You have to neutralise the opposition
:33:50. > :33:53.and they have a lot of strengths. Dundee United did not get to show
:33:54. > :33:58.their qualities as much as they wanted to. I look at the entire St
:33:59. > :34:02.Johnstone side and every single player played well. If you get every
:34:03. > :34:05.single player in the team playing well, you get a good chance of
:34:06. > :34:09.winning. We had expected maybe Stephen to be one of the
:34:10. > :34:21.goal-scorers for St Johnstone, maybe Stephen May, it came out -- it
:34:22. > :34:26.turned out to be Stevie May. The goalkeeper, all day long, people
:34:27. > :34:30.look at Watson but you have to clear out when your goalkeeper comes that
:34:31. > :34:35.far. You are thinking, he has got it and he misses it completely. Nobody
:34:36. > :34:39.on the post, maybe if there was somebody who could have got it, but
:34:40. > :34:45.it is a poor goal to lose and the timing of it. There is no one on
:34:46. > :34:52.either post, there were questions over what's in there. Not from me.
:34:53. > :34:56.You need to tell it like it is. It is Cierzniak's mistake and he knows
:34:57. > :35:01.it is his mistake. The defender turns around and says, what on earth
:35:02. > :35:05.are you doing? It is a shall we all know from youth football. If the
:35:06. > :35:09.ball is coming over, it is mine, the keeper's. He goes for it, so you get
:35:10. > :35:15.out of the way and he made a mistake. He has had a good season,
:35:16. > :35:23.the goalie. Great movement from Anderson. No Hamish McAlpine, in
:35:24. > :35:30.that scenario, what about this one? Was he to blame for the second goal?
:35:31. > :35:39.No chance. They go for-5-1 at this point, May finds himself in the
:35:40. > :35:45.space, it drifts off Rankin. I think the goal was brave more than
:35:46. > :35:49.anything. He's quick off his line. He comes off Rankin, nothing he can
:35:50. > :35:54.do about it. When you get your brakes, you have to make use of
:35:55. > :35:59.them. That is what St Johnstone did. He has to be brave there. The
:36:00. > :36:06.keeper is metres from getting it. What about the celebration? He has
:36:07. > :36:09.got a yellow card for it, he knew he would get a yellow card. I am not
:36:10. > :36:12.sure if it was for running up the crowd or taking off his shirt but in
:36:13. > :36:18.a Scottish Cup final you have to enjoy the moment. Absolutely. We
:36:19. > :36:21.need to give the officials credit. It did look like it might end in
:36:22. > :36:27.huge confusion, the steely May incident. -- the Stevie May
:36:28. > :36:33.incident. The additional assistant referee, it is not over the line
:36:34. > :36:38.from the header. We bring it out a bit here, when he handles it it is
:36:39. > :36:43.not over the line. Stevie May was saying he thought it was over the
:36:44. > :36:47.line. That proves it wasn't. The assistants is in a brilliant
:36:48. > :36:52.position. Somebody makes a decision, the linesman was gone and the
:36:53. > :36:58.referee was gone, he was giving the goal and Alan Muir, perfect
:36:59. > :37:02.position. He spotted it. On this occasion it works. They did speak to
:37:03. > :37:05.Alan Muir and it looked like they had awarded the goal and this could
:37:06. > :37:12.have marred the Cup final, if the goal had been given. Yes, but Alan
:37:13. > :37:17.Muir knew all the way right throughout the hand ball, whether it
:37:18. > :37:22.was over the line for the goalkeeper and he was spot on. They were never
:37:23. > :37:26.going to let the goal stand. They were taking their time, quite
:37:27. > :37:30.rightly, and got it spot on. I give the officials more than my fair
:37:31. > :37:34.stick -- more than my share of stick but today we praise them. Was
:37:35. > :37:38.impossible for Stevie May to tap that ball in with any other part of
:37:39. > :37:44.his body? I know what you are saying. When I was doing commentary,
:37:45. > :37:48.I thought could he have done it with his knee? It is high, behind him,
:37:49. > :37:53.and natural instinct to bundle it over the line. You have to say in
:37:54. > :37:58.slow motion it looks as if he can get it. It did not happen in slow
:37:59. > :38:02.motion. It was not Dundee United's day, Jackie McNamara said. They had
:38:03. > :38:08.plenty of chances, especially when you cut it down to the highlights.
:38:09. > :38:13.It does look good, a brilliant touch. That is amazing skill.
:38:14. > :38:24.Another day, he heads off the post and it goes in. This one, 90% of the
:38:25. > :38:29.time goes in. You have deride your luck, when you get a chance to ride
:38:30. > :38:34.your luck. At that point in time, we were starting to think this same
:38:35. > :38:39.thing, it is going to be St Johnstone's day. They did create
:38:40. > :38:42.chances, but Jackie McNamara, take nothing away from St Johnstone, they
:38:43. > :38:47.were excellent, a great strike from Ciftci, Jackie McNamara will be
:38:48. > :38:52.disappointed with their performance in the Cup final today because only
:38:53. > :38:59.Ryan Dow hit the post. They did not do it enough. Can you pinpoint why
:39:00. > :39:05.you think Dundee United were not on their game today? St Johnstone, as
:39:06. > :39:08.simple as that. You can say all along United, they were not at it,
:39:09. > :39:13.but you have to condiment St Johnstone and how they went about
:39:14. > :39:17.their jobs. All throughout the pitch, defensively, midfield,
:39:18. > :39:24.strikers, absolutely excellent. Who missed out in the last two Scottish
:39:25. > :39:28.Cup finals but played a strong role to date? He was superb, running with
:39:29. > :39:33.the ball was brilliant. See the drag backs and dummies. A great angle on
:39:34. > :39:37.this one, you wondered if it would go in the back post but here, that
:39:38. > :39:43.was going in. That was a goal. Good defending, number one. His running
:39:44. > :39:51.was superb. He was always confusingly, this one, the run is
:39:52. > :39:54.great. He has lots of options. The players dragging them all sorts of
:39:55. > :40:00.ways but there is a couple of little drag backs here, the last two, you
:40:01. > :40:04.have to say this would have been one of the greatest goals in Scottish
:40:05. > :40:07.Cup history. There is a bit of him that will be delighted he is a
:40:08. > :40:14.Scottish Cup winner but thinking, I could have gone down in history as
:40:15. > :40:18.one of the greatest goals ever. The only thing he missed was dragging
:40:19. > :40:23.across the goalkeeper in the bottom corner but brilliant. He had run a
:40:24. > :40:26.long way. In terms of St Johnstone's overall game plan, from
:40:27. > :40:32.the start it seemed they were in Dundee United's faces? Yes, closing
:40:33. > :40:36.down, they do that, they don't give any space. They break the pace.
:40:37. > :40:43.Armstrong I mentioned before, every time he got the ball they were close
:40:44. > :40:48.to him. Closing in, then try and break away. No space at all given.
:40:49. > :40:51.Mackay-Steven and Armstrong, Ciftci, three people, four people
:40:52. > :40:58.sometimes around him, closing him down. He has no space at all. There
:40:59. > :41:01.is a man on him, no chance to get going, get running. There were very
:41:02. > :41:05.few times in the game when he got the ball to run. This time he did.
:41:06. > :41:10.He runs out in defence that it is another great tackle. I was
:41:11. > :41:15.impressed he managed to keep this up for the entire game. Ten players
:41:16. > :41:21.behind the ball, but look what they do. They closed down Ciftci and they
:41:22. > :41:26.break the pace. They are not going to calm down. Look at this. Chasing
:41:27. > :41:34.him, one, five of them close into him. Have a look at these three.
:41:35. > :41:37.Right in there. Closing down, and do you know what happens when you do
:41:38. > :41:41.that? The ball goes away and you get position back. That was the game
:41:42. > :41:46.plan. They worked at it and they didn't lose it at any point. It is
:41:47. > :41:51.hard to do that. You get tired come mentally and physically tired, but
:41:52. > :41:53.they never let it lie. Impressive from St Johnstone, we have seen the
:41:54. > :42:02.goals but defensively you were impressed. It did start off shakily.
:42:03. > :42:06.United got in, Frazer Wright and Dunne have a kick-off, they kick it
:42:07. > :42:10.against each other twice. When it has to be blocked it is Frazer
:42:11. > :42:15.Wright out there blocking as he did all day, McDonald joining in near
:42:16. > :42:19.the end. All day we talk about United's front four, that is their
:42:20. > :42:24.main strength. St Johnstone were at them all day long. He's ton-macro
:42:25. > :42:28.tucked himself in from a fallback position, slangy -- slamming into
:42:29. > :42:34.the tackle. St Johnstone had to be spot on. When you won 2-0 up and
:42:35. > :42:37.wondering if they could get back in it, Wright is there to block the
:42:38. > :42:46.Armstrong shot. Incredible defending to stop United's strength.
:42:47. > :42:52.Courtesy of the Scottish FA's camera, you might have seen it
:42:53. > :42:57.attached to the chest of Dave Macaye, the St Johnstone captain, as
:42:58. > :43:02.he held aloft the Scottish Cup. What a scene. Billy, you've actually done
:43:03. > :43:10.this yourself. For the likes of us... I've not done that! It's
:43:11. > :43:17.amazing shots we've got there. I think it's Dave Macaye, you said. I
:43:18. > :43:22.think we're dismissive of these St Johnstone collect itch, good, old
:43:23. > :43:26.fashioned pros. Can you have 11 good players and team spirit, that
:43:27. > :43:33.doesn't necessarily win you the trophies. It's being really good
:43:34. > :43:37.players and on top of all that, these St Johnstone side have got
:43:38. > :43:42.railly good individuals. It has been a magic day. The party
:43:43. > :43:49.will be taking place in Perth. For us, there is Brian.
:43:50. > :43:56.They were formed in 1884, it's taken 130 years to get here, but the
:43:57. > :44:04.Scottish Cup is now in the hands of St Johnstone. Dave, congratulations.
:44:05. > :44:08.Well done. What was the bus journey like? Lively, as you can imagine. It
:44:09. > :44:13.was great atmosphere and the boys are delighted with it. You've got
:44:14. > :44:19.this, St Johnstone's name is on the trophy. Remarkable. Incredible. 130
:44:20. > :44:23.years and the club have never had a name on the trophy. To finally do it
:44:24. > :44:28.is fantastic. It's great to have so many fans the other day. You've been
:44:29. > :44:32.here a long time. What does it mean to you and the club and the city of
:44:33. > :44:35.Perth? It's great, fantastic. Hopefully we can get a few more of
:44:36. > :44:40.the fans that turned up today turning up next season. It's great
:44:41. > :44:44.to finally get a bit of silverware for the club. They've won First
:44:45. > :44:48.Division and second division, but to win a major trophy is incredible.
:44:49. > :44:55.It's a great feeling. Absolutely ecstatic, yeah. The feeling is
:44:56. > :44:58.incredible. Just what it means to everybody at St Johnstone, for the
:44:59. > :45:05.chairman, to everybody down in the dressing room, to the boys, to the
:45:06. > :45:10.kit man, honestly, for my family, it means so much to me. Us what this
:45:11. > :45:15.means to you. It means everything. To win the Scottish Cup in the first
:45:16. > :45:19.season in management as well. It's special to me and to so many more
:45:20. > :45:24.people at this football club. You know the chairman and his dad,
:45:25. > :45:27.they've done a tremendous job. All the supporters and the players as
:45:28. > :45:31.well. I'm really pleased for them today. At last, they've probably got
:45:32. > :45:37.the recognition that they deserve. Many people have served this club
:45:38. > :45:40.graciously over 130 years. But your name will go down in history as a
:45:41. > :45:50.manager who brought the first trophy here. That will probably hit me
:45:51. > :45:55.tomorrow, the enormity of it. They were saying, "Do you know what this
:45:56. > :45:59.means, we will have to, in 20 years' time, we'll get a phone call,
:46:00. > :46:04.there's a celebration dinner for the cup-winning side." I will have to
:46:05. > :46:08.get on my zimmer frame and come over. To be the first is really
:46:09. > :46:18.special. . You've been associated with this club for... 86. 6? What
:46:19. > :46:21.does this mean? I have always said that what I was butting in was going
:46:22. > :46:25.into the community. Hopefully the day would come where everyone
:46:26. > :46:32.appreciated what you were doing. This is that day. Done. Job done.
:46:33. > :46:38.Obviously, we'll be looking for more. Fantastic, ,500 people there
:46:39. > :46:49.from Perth, fantastic. Thank you very much, guys. You all right? Ten
:46:50. > :46:53.years you've been here, did you ever dream of days like this happening?
:46:54. > :47:00.Of course you dream about them. But it's when it happens, and we made
:47:01. > :47:05.sure we won the game. That's the most important thing. Does it mean
:47:06. > :47:09.to you, you had the League Cup Final with Kilmarnock, didn't go well that
:47:10. > :47:13.day. This is completely different. Completely different. Everyone is
:47:14. > :47:41.buzzing. It's completely different. It's finally happened after 130
:47:42. > :47:46.years, St Johnstone have won their first major trophy and tonight in
:47:47. > :47:51.Perth, the Saints are truly marching in.
:47:52. > :47:55.A hugely emotional day for everyone connected with St Johnstone. I
:47:56. > :47:59.guess, you'd have to say that a lot of the players, this might be their
:48:00. > :48:02.only chance to win a Scottish Cup final and they've done it. That must
:48:03. > :48:05.mean so much to them. That's what brought the pressure today. That's
:48:06. > :48:10.why these lads, we've talked about them as a team group, as
:48:11. > :48:14.individuals, but the hard work going on behind-the-scenes, what a guy,
:48:15. > :48:19.Jeff Brown is, his son Stephen, just hard work, graft, desire,
:48:20. > :48:24.dedication. That's what gets them that. I bet they're not sober now as
:48:25. > :48:28.they were in those shots. Tommy Wright seems to be a class act.
:48:29. > :48:34.Everybody has a good ward to say about him. Everybody pleased to see
:48:35. > :48:39.him win the Scottish Cup. That's the sense of -- theme of the day, the
:48:40. > :48:44.sense of goodwill. The manager has been brilliant. He hasn't put a foot
:48:45. > :48:48.wrong. Well done to the chairman. Well done to the fans, turning out
:48:49. > :48:52.in huge numbers. I have to say, I'd like to put it to Jeff Brown at the
:48:53. > :48:56.end, known him for quite a few years, he's one of the best guys
:48:57. > :49:01.I've ever met in football in my life. Well done, Jeff. The season
:49:02. > :49:05.never seems to ever end. There's live international football coming
:49:06. > :49:08.up on Sportscene, a week on Wednesday, when it's the friendly
:49:09. > :49:14.between Nigeria and Scotland. Join us for that. Today was all about the
:49:15. > :49:17.Scottish Cup. They say St Johnstone don't get the credit they deserve.
:49:18. > :49:19.Well, they get it tonight. Congratulations Saints from all of
:49:20. > :49:23.us here, good night.
