0:00:38 > 0:00:41Hello, we are back in Newcastle, where the football team is back

0:00:41 > 0:00:42in the Premier League.

0:00:42 > 0:00:51But for now, it is all about rugby league and the Magic Weekend.

0:01:04 > 0:01:06Oh, he is over, they have won it.

0:01:06 > 0:01:12And the try is given.

0:01:12 > 0:01:13Look at the face here.

0:01:13 > 0:01:19What a finish.

0:01:19 > 0:01:24It is a happy tenth birthday to the Magic Weekend,

0:01:24 > 0:01:27and this is how it works, it is Round 14 of the Super League

0:01:27 > 0:01:30season and all the fixtures are played here at St James' Park.

0:01:30 > 0:01:33The regular two competition points are on offer to the winner,

0:01:33 > 0:01:36with three games on Saturday and three more on Sunday.

0:01:36 > 0:01:37Joining us for the weekend, is Iestyn Harris.

0:01:37 > 0:01:40Iestyn, you played in a Magic Weekend, you coached one,

0:01:40 > 0:01:42how different is it for the clubs?

0:01:42 > 0:01:45It is very difficult, to focus your players in, you know,

0:01:45 > 0:01:48being both player and a coach, because there is a lot

0:01:48 > 0:01:50of things going on.

0:01:50 > 0:01:54You come to the game, and generally there is a game,

0:01:54 > 0:01:57as there is behind us, now that's going on, how do

0:01:57 > 0:02:00you focus, keep the guys really key to getting their preparations right?

0:02:00 > 0:02:02And that's a challenge for all the coaches,

0:02:02 > 0:02:04but it's a great event.

0:02:04 > 0:02:06It's been growing and growing for a large number of years,

0:02:06 > 0:02:09we are in the tenth one now, it's an exciting concept for the

0:02:09 > 0:02:11fans and everybody involved with it.

0:02:11 > 0:02:15You say it's growing, but ticket sales, they are predicting not

0:02:15 > 0:02:17as good as previous years.

0:02:17 > 0:02:21A lot of people in the game saying why not have a nines

0:02:21 > 0:02:22competition, what do you think?

0:02:22 > 0:02:25I think a nines competition would be terrific, I think that could be

0:02:25 > 0:02:26a real plus for the game.

0:02:26 > 0:02:29If you look at other sports and how they develop,

0:02:29 > 0:02:31cricket, for example, going to Twenty20 and making a fast

0:02:31 > 0:02:33paced game, which has been done in the NRL,

0:02:34 > 0:02:35working with the nines.

0:02:35 > 0:02:40I think that would work very well.

0:02:40 > 0:02:43Whether they change the concept, we will have to wait and see,

0:02:43 > 0:02:46but certainly there's a big talk about moving away from Newcastle

0:02:46 > 0:02:48to a different ground.

0:02:48 > 0:02:52It will be interesting what they do there, because I think it is key

0:02:52 > 0:02:54to the importance of this being in a city centre,

0:02:54 > 0:02:57where fans can come in and out of the stadium, enjoy the rugby,

0:02:57 > 0:02:59but go out and experience the atmosphere outside

0:02:59 > 0:03:00the ground as well.

0:03:00 > 0:03:02The headline match on day one was Wigan against Warrington.

0:03:02 > 0:03:05These two met in the Grand Final last year and they will meet

0:03:05 > 0:03:07in the Challenge Cup next month.

0:03:07 > 0:03:08Watching this one is Dave Woods.

0:03:08 > 0:03:09Here is McIlorum.

0:03:09 > 0:03:14And what a position Wigan find themselves in here.

0:03:14 > 0:03:17Shifting across that left-hand side, Williams with a step back inside,

0:03:17 > 0:03:21but he's held onto and he has the pass away.

0:03:21 > 0:03:24Nuuausala is not going much further.

0:03:24 > 0:03:26It's a ball over the top.

0:03:26 > 0:03:28Which has just evaded the winger.

0:03:28 > 0:03:33Marshall is the man to make the most of it.

0:03:33 > 0:03:39He loves playing against Warrington.

0:03:39 > 0:03:47It's his fifth try against them in two games.

0:03:47 > 0:03:48Clark.

0:03:48 > 0:03:57Hill.

0:04:05 > 0:04:07Real determination, just going to be held up short.

0:04:07 > 0:04:09In fact, he has lost the ball.

0:04:09 > 0:04:10Clark picks it up.

0:04:10 > 0:04:12Well, he sniped in there when he saw the opportunity.

0:04:12 > 0:04:13Is it a try?

0:04:13 > 0:04:14He thinks so.

0:04:14 > 0:04:15So have a look at this.

0:04:15 > 0:04:17The ball is ripped out.

0:04:17 > 0:04:19And it has gone backwards as the referee says.

0:04:19 > 0:04:21Hits the head of Farrell on the floor.

0:04:21 > 0:04:26So all good from that point of view, it is a clean pick up,

0:04:26 > 0:04:27it's a clean touchdown.

0:04:27 > 0:04:29And it is a try for Warrington.

0:04:29 > 0:04:30Well done Darrell Clark.

0:04:30 > 0:04:36It's Brown.

0:04:36 > 0:04:38Oh, Marshall with the intercept.

0:04:38 > 0:04:40We know he has pace, but he's also got company.

0:04:40 > 0:04:42From this near side, he will be chased down

0:04:42 > 0:04:44but he will not be caught.

0:04:44 > 0:04:52And Marshall in for his second.

0:04:52 > 0:04:55It's a long buster length of field but it is a moment of celebration.

0:04:55 > 0:05:04L with the intercept.

0:05:17 > 0:05:19Quickly away and finds the gap here does Russell.

0:05:19 > 0:05:20He has Ratchford in support.

0:05:20 > 0:05:22Ratchford unable to take them on for pace.

0:05:22 > 0:05:25But that have the momentum here and they have a penalty.

0:05:25 > 0:05:26Lewis Tierney holding down.

0:05:26 > 0:05:27It is a yellow card.

0:05:27 > 0:05:29It's a yellow card for the professional foul here.

0:05:29 > 0:05:33And he was hanging on and hanging on and now he has to go.

0:05:33 > 0:05:34McIlorum.

0:05:34 > 0:05:36Farrell to his left, so was O'Loughlin, runs

0:05:36 > 0:05:38into Kevin Brown but Brown does the job.

0:05:38 > 0:05:43It's another chance.

0:05:43 > 0:05:52Marshall might have a hat-trick here.

0:05:52 > 0:05:54Well they are having a look.

0:05:54 > 0:05:55He thinks it is a try.

0:05:55 > 0:05:56Marshall picks up.

0:05:56 > 0:05:57Is there a bubble there?

0:05:57 > 0:06:00Has he hit the line?

0:06:00 > 0:06:02Crucially on the field he says try.

0:06:02 > 0:06:05The try is given.

0:06:05 > 0:06:10It's a hat-trick for Marshall.

0:06:10 > 0:06:12It's seven in two games against Warrington.

0:06:12 > 0:06:14That is clever by Brown, it is well read by Ratchford,

0:06:14 > 0:06:21Ratchford pushing away, and swerving away,

0:06:21 > 0:06:24what a wonderfully crafted try that is from Warrington.

0:06:24 > 0:06:31Really neat stuff.

0:06:31 > 0:06:34Hill.

0:06:34 > 0:06:38He has done well to keep that ball alive.

0:06:38 > 0:06:39It is Clark.

0:06:39 > 0:06:42Despite the three defenders he has made some decent yardage.

0:06:42 > 0:06:43Ratchford again.

0:06:43 > 0:06:46Creates the space.

0:06:46 > 0:06:51Over to Lineham on that left-hand side.

0:06:51 > 0:06:52Lineham.

0:06:52 > 0:06:57It's tight.

0:06:57 > 0:07:04They will have to have another look.

0:07:04 > 0:07:05The touch judge.

0:07:05 > 0:07:09And the referee.

0:07:09 > 0:07:11They are going to go upstairs again.

0:07:11 > 0:07:14So what kind of a job has Lineham done here?

0:07:14 > 0:07:15Have a look at that left boot.

0:07:15 > 0:07:18That is clearly still in the field of play, that is a wonderful

0:07:18 > 0:07:19finish by Tom Lineham.

0:07:19 > 0:07:20Really good winger's finish.

0:07:20 > 0:07:26Spun left, six taggle.

0:07:26 > 0:07:28Spun left, six tackle.

0:07:28 > 0:07:29Will have a go here.

0:07:29 > 0:07:30Brown tries to keep it alive.

0:07:30 > 0:07:31Wigan drop on it.

0:07:31 > 0:07:32Knocked on by McIlorum.

0:07:32 > 0:07:35There is a bit afters here between Gidley and McIlorum.

0:07:35 > 0:07:37And the referee can blow all he likes.

0:07:37 > 0:07:40They are angry there, they were having a go.

0:07:40 > 0:07:42McIlorum clearly unhappy with the way Gidley tried

0:07:42 > 0:07:45to complete the tackle.

0:07:45 > 0:07:54Gidley is unhappy with the response.

0:07:57 > 0:07:58Julien.

0:07:58 > 0:07:59Brown.

0:07:59 > 0:08:03That looked a little high from Shaun O'Loughlin.

0:08:03 > 0:08:07Stepping away, and it was high.

0:08:07 > 0:08:09Right around the neck of Kevin Brown.

0:08:09 > 0:08:13So Ratchford with a very kickable attempt here,

0:08:13 > 0:08:17they are edging closer to victory are Warrington, with

0:08:17 > 0:08:25another two points.

0:08:25 > 0:08:27That's a kick through, was Burgess impeded there?

0:08:27 > 0:08:28Ratchford gets across.

0:08:28 > 0:08:29Yes, he was.

0:08:29 > 0:08:31Penalty for Wigan.

0:08:31 > 0:08:39Well, they still have a wonderful opportunity here, Wigan.

0:08:39 > 0:08:46It's well struck, it hits the post but it bounces in.

0:08:46 > 0:08:54And there is some joy still to be had from those in cherry and white.

0:08:54 > 0:08:56Atkins.

0:08:56 > 0:09:00He has done well to get that away to Julien.

0:09:00 > 0:09:03Julien is not tackled so he is going to carry on.

0:09:03 > 0:09:07Wigan's defence has to be smart.

0:09:07 > 0:09:12It's Atkins.

0:09:12 > 0:09:15Gidley, back to Brown.

0:09:15 > 0:09:17Shows it to two, opposites to Ratchford, Ratchford

0:09:17 > 0:09:20to this right-hand side.

0:09:20 > 0:09:24Hughes cuts in and against his former team, Jack Hughes with a try,

0:09:24 > 0:09:28that might just seal the win here for Warrington.

0:09:28 > 0:09:32They are delighted, with every reason.

0:09:32 > 0:09:35This is going to be it.

0:09:35 > 0:09:37Last play, last chance for Wigan.

0:09:37 > 0:09:38Game running away from them.

0:09:38 > 0:09:39Williams.

0:09:39 > 0:09:41Last tackle now.

0:09:41 > 0:09:46Clock's running down.

0:09:46 > 0:09:49So it's a big hit and hope.

0:09:49 > 0:09:50Up it goes, look at that score.

0:09:50 > 0:09:58Burgess has it.

0:09:58 > 0:09:59To draw them level, at 24 points apiece.

0:10:00 > 0:10:02But we are having another look.

0:10:02 > 0:10:08They ain't going to confirm it yet.

0:10:08 > 0:10:10The Magic Weekend is littered with moments like this, that have

0:10:10 > 0:10:12gone unchecked in the past.

0:10:12 > 0:10:15They absolutely have to have another look here.

0:10:15 > 0:10:16It looks to be onside.

0:10:16 > 0:10:21There is nothing wrong with the leap.

0:10:21 > 0:10:24If he touches down, the Wigan end will erupt here.

0:10:24 > 0:10:30He has touched down.

0:10:30 > 0:10:33He thinks it's a try and he is right to think it is.

0:10:33 > 0:10:3524 points apiece.

0:10:35 > 0:10:39With a kick to come.

0:10:39 > 0:10:41All eyes on Williams, has he got it?

0:10:41 > 0:10:44Has he snatched the victory?

0:10:44 > 0:10:45No, he's not.

0:10:45 > 0:10:49It goes just wide, but what a game.

0:10:49 > 0:10:51It goes just wide, but what a game.

0:10:51 > 0:10:55To get in a position we could have won and then you don't, yes,

0:10:55 > 0:10:56it is disappointing.

0:10:56 > 0:10:58I am sure Wigan feel the same as well.

0:10:58 > 0:11:01They got in a position where they could have won the game

0:11:01 > 0:11:04and allowed us back in, and, you know, we did that

0:11:04 > 0:11:07in the last couple of minutes.

0:11:07 > 0:11:11I have just thought out, I don't know that we deserved to win today.

0:11:11 > 0:11:15I'm not suggesting that for a second, but it's disappointing

0:11:15 > 0:11:17when you have worked to get an opportunity to win

0:11:17 > 0:11:20and then you blow it, and I thought we blew it.

0:11:20 > 0:11:21I am really disappointed, really gutted, really

0:11:21 > 0:11:24pleased with the effort, but effort is not enough,

0:11:24 > 0:11:27I want to win these games, and Warrington are a great team,

0:11:27 > 0:11:32but I thought we gave ourselves too much to do.

0:11:32 > 0:11:35The new St Helens coach, Justin Holbrook, has arrived

0:11:35 > 0:11:37and he takes charge of his side for the first time as

0:11:38 > 0:11:39they played Hull FC.

0:11:39 > 0:11:46Your commentator is Matt Newsome.

0:11:46 > 0:11:47Your commentator is Matt Newsome.

0:11:47 > 0:11:50James Roby directing Fages.

0:11:50 > 0:11:53Through the hands to Taia.

0:11:53 > 0:11:57Hull stand firm.

0:11:57 > 0:11:58Stand firm back towards the middle.

0:11:58 > 0:11:59Dropped off short.

0:11:59 > 0:12:01Off short, Kyle Amor.

0:12:01 > 0:12:02Testing Hull.

0:12:02 > 0:12:04In those Incredible Hulk shirts.

0:12:04 > 0:12:07Roby, from dummy half to Walmsley.

0:12:07 > 0:12:13Walmsley bashes his way through, and St Helens have a breakthrough.

0:12:13 > 0:12:14And it's the talismanic Walmsley, overlooked

0:12:14 > 0:12:19by England, not by Saints.

0:12:19 > 0:12:20Roby.

0:12:20 > 0:12:24Testing, probing.

0:12:24 > 0:12:26Gets it away to Walmsley, those two causing Hull

0:12:26 > 0:12:27all manner of problems.

0:12:27 > 0:12:28Matty Smith.

0:12:28 > 0:12:29Lines up a kick.

0:12:29 > 0:12:30Hangs it up.

0:12:30 > 0:12:37There is Ryan Morgan.

0:12:37 > 0:12:39He hung and he climbed, and he gathered.

0:12:39 > 0:12:40And Saints have a second try.

0:12:40 > 0:12:42And they are happy.

0:12:42 > 0:12:47And so is Ryan Morgan.

0:12:47 > 0:12:51Hull barely had a sniff so far.

0:12:51 > 0:12:54Thompson makes his way inside the 40.

0:12:54 > 0:12:56Smith again.

0:12:56 > 0:12:59Another kick, another tester for Hull.

0:12:59 > 0:13:02Steve Michaels, he has fumbled it.

0:13:02 > 0:13:05Knowles, he has juggled it, and Knowles has it down,

0:13:05 > 0:13:09but I think we will go to the video referee,

0:13:09 > 0:13:14and he wants some clarity.

0:13:14 > 0:13:16Try on field decision.

0:13:16 > 0:13:20Morgan Knowles.

0:13:20 > 0:13:22As Steve Michaels climbs, the ball slips through his

0:13:22 > 0:13:26fingers, bounces loose.

0:13:26 > 0:13:28Was he tackled in the air?

0:13:28 > 0:13:30Well, it would be a bit harsh to say he was.

0:13:30 > 0:13:32Ball pops loose, Knowles takes it in.

0:13:32 > 0:13:34Now, is there a knock-on here?

0:13:34 > 0:13:37Certainly there is a bit of juggling.

0:13:37 > 0:13:39But that looks good.

0:13:39 > 0:13:43And Saints running riot now.

0:13:43 > 0:13:47A third try, 23 on the clock.

0:13:47 > 0:13:56Morgan Knowles.

0:13:57 > 0:13:58Matty Smith, drop goal.

0:13:58 > 0:14:05Just seconds before the break.

0:14:05 > 0:14:07He knows how to turn a game.

0:14:07 > 0:14:08Tommy Lee from dummy half.

0:14:08 > 0:14:10They have worked it away, to that right edge.

0:14:10 > 0:14:13In front of the post.

0:14:13 > 0:14:21Thompson.

0:14:21 > 0:14:23Red alert at the moment as Saints go to the line again.

0:14:23 > 0:14:26And it's Walmsley, with his second try of the game.

0:14:26 > 0:14:31They just can't stop him.

0:14:31 > 0:14:34And Saints are on fire.

0:14:34 > 0:14:36Alex Walmsley the man.

0:14:36 > 0:14:41Roby again, on to Walmsley, that combination.

0:14:41 > 0:14:42Shredding Hull.

0:14:42 > 0:14:44Robey from dummy half.

0:14:44 > 0:14:46Smith.

0:14:46 > 0:14:48To that left-hand side.

0:14:48 > 0:14:51Back in field from Percival.

0:14:51 > 0:14:52And Hull have to stop him.

0:14:52 > 0:14:54Grace.

0:14:54 > 0:15:09Smith back to that left side again.

0:15:09 > 0:15:10Rampages through!

0:15:10 > 0:15:11And Hull cut to ribbons.

0:15:11 > 0:15:12What is going on here?

0:15:12 > 0:15:16St Helens look a changed side.

0:15:16 > 0:15:19A rare raid for Hull, trying to find a bit of rhythm,

0:15:19 > 0:15:22that bit of slickness.

0:15:22 > 0:15:31Tommy Lee makes the tackle.

0:15:31 > 0:15:33Well taken in space by Tommy Makinson.

0:15:33 > 0:15:35He's going to have a dig here.

0:15:35 > 0:15:36He slips the tackle.

0:15:36 > 0:15:42Has Tommy got space in front of him?

0:15:42 > 0:15:46Danny will try to stop him, but Tommy Makinson,

0:15:46 > 0:15:47on his 150th appearance,

0:15:47 > 0:15:57has scored a remarkable try.

0:15:58 > 0:15:59Length of the field.

0:15:59 > 0:16:00And Justin Holbrook might well smile.

0:16:00 > 0:16:03Making it look easy.

0:16:03 > 0:16:07Delight for Tommy Makinson.

0:16:07 > 0:16:13St Helens, really pulling out the stops this afternoon,

0:16:13 > 0:16:16but you have to say, Hull look a shadow of the team

0:16:16 > 0:16:23that destroyed Catalan in the Challenge Cup last weekend.

0:16:23 > 0:16:24Here goes Perceval.

0:16:24 > 0:16:32Sleight of hand!

0:16:32 > 0:16:35And this winger continues his remarkable form, or does he?

0:16:35 > 0:16:37Robert Hicks is going to the screen.

0:16:37 > 0:16:38Sleight of hand from Perceval, lovely pass.

0:16:38 > 0:16:40He's well in the field of play.

0:16:40 > 0:16:41Is the finish good?

0:16:41 > 0:16:42It's sublime.

0:16:42 > 0:16:43Josh Griffin coming across.

0:16:43 > 0:16:44He couldn't stop him.

0:16:44 > 0:16:50And that is sensational from Grace.

0:16:50 > 0:16:58What a season he's having.

0:16:58 > 0:17:04Hull looking for a consolation.

0:17:04 > 0:17:06That's a huge hit on Danny Washbrook.

0:17:06 > 0:17:12Just about sums up this game.

0:17:12 > 0:17:15Matty Smith gets it away to Morgan, who rides the challenge.

0:17:15 > 0:17:17Justin Holbrook must be thinking, what's all the fuss about?

0:17:17 > 0:17:18Simple.

0:17:18 > 0:17:20Swift looking to get away.

0:17:20 > 0:17:27But Hull wrap him up.

0:17:27 > 0:17:28They have shifted it left here.

0:17:28 > 0:17:32Out on that left-hand side is Grace.

0:17:32 > 0:17:34And he's got a second try.

0:17:34 > 0:17:37That is the icing on the cake.

0:17:37 > 0:17:38St Helens will clear.

0:17:38 > 0:17:43St Helens in full control.

0:17:43 > 0:17:47What a Magic Weekend for them, and for Justin Holbrook.

0:17:47 > 0:17:51Justin, welcome to Super League.

0:17:51 > 0:17:53You have made this coaching lark look easy!

0:17:53 > 0:17:56You must be delighted.

0:17:56 > 0:18:01I can't take much credit for it, but full credit to the boys.

0:18:01 > 0:18:05It was great to see them play so well today.

0:18:05 > 0:18:08You haven't had much time with them, but what are the key things

0:18:08 > 0:18:09you have been saying?

0:18:09 > 0:18:09I have just been trying to take pressure off them.

0:18:12 > 0:18:18I saw the way they were playing when I was back in Australia.

0:18:18 > 0:18:19I could see how tense they were.

0:18:19 > 0:18:21They were trying too hard, putting pressure on themselves.

0:18:21 > 0:18:23I just wanted them to relax.

0:18:23 > 0:18:26They had to work hard, but it was good to see

0:18:26 > 0:18:27them playing well.

0:18:27 > 0:18:29To be fair to Justin, he has been making simple demands of us.

0:18:29 > 0:18:32The main one was to be excited about playing.

0:18:32 > 0:18:35We have lost that in the last few weeks, and he could see

0:18:35 > 0:18:38the frustration in our performances.

0:18:38 > 0:18:42I didn't see a result like that coming, did you?

0:18:42 > 0:18:46No, I started worrying when we collapsed.

0:18:46 > 0:18:48So that is obviously something we got to speak

0:18:48 > 0:18:51about moving forward.

0:18:51 > 0:18:53I watched them last week and they couldn't

0:18:53 > 0:18:55have been any worse.

0:18:55 > 0:18:58When you get quotes like "It's the lowest point of my career"

0:18:58 > 0:19:01from a 20 year veteran, you know they're in a bad place.

0:19:01 > 0:19:06But they got up off the canvas and did a real job on us.

0:19:06 > 0:19:08How excited are you for the rest of the season?

0:19:08 > 0:19:11Oh, very.

0:19:11 > 0:19:14I knew I was coming to a squad that were capable of that.

0:19:14 > 0:19:16They just had a tough period.

0:19:16 > 0:19:19It is only one win, so we have to back it up

0:19:19 > 0:19:20on Thursday against Wigan, but very pleasing.

0:19:20 > 0:19:23Football is of course the number one sport in this city,

0:19:23 > 0:19:26but rugby league does have a presence in the form

0:19:26 > 0:19:29of Newcastle Thunder.

0:19:29 > 0:19:31They play in the third tier of the sport,

0:19:31 > 0:19:33but have big ambitions.

0:19:33 > 0:19:36There's a romantic side of us says we would like to be

0:19:36 > 0:19:37in the Super League.

0:19:37 > 0:19:39But the reality side says we have to develop

0:19:39 > 0:19:42the north-east as a community of rugby league players.

0:19:42 > 0:19:44We are starting, that trickle is coming through.

0:19:44 > 0:19:47We now need to continue to do that, but there is no quick fix.

0:19:47 > 0:19:49We'll raise our commercial profile and our playing profile.

0:19:49 > 0:19:54We have to raise everything.

0:19:54 > 0:19:57There are three of us working in the community department.

0:19:57 > 0:19:59We run various programmes.

0:19:59 > 0:20:05We also run a girls' programme.

0:20:05 > 0:20:07The kids are bringing the parents along, which is brilliant.

0:20:07 > 0:20:09Year-on-year, we are proud to have grown, especially

0:20:09 > 0:20:10with events like this.

0:20:10 > 0:20:13It puts us on the map a bit.

0:20:13 > 0:20:15I think the north-east general public are now turning their heads

0:20:15 > 0:20:18with the recent Magic Weekends we have had here.

0:20:18 > 0:20:19Three years is sufficient.

0:20:19 > 0:20:22It is right to take it elsewhere now, but we would love to see it

0:20:22 > 0:20:25back in the north-east.

0:20:25 > 0:20:28I think Newcastle has created the Magic into a concept that works.

0:20:28 > 0:20:31We are very fortunate from working with the likes of Newcastle United

0:20:31 > 0:20:33and the RFL to make it a really good event.

0:20:33 > 0:20:43That has to be the platform or the framework for going forward.

0:20:45 > 0:20:48I would love to have it back, though.

0:20:48 > 0:20:50Well, joining us is the executive director

0:20:50 > 0:20:51of Super League, Roger Draper.

0:20:51 > 0:20:54Roger, do you think Magic Weekend has done its job in Newcastle

0:20:54 > 0:20:56for raising the presence of rugby league here?

0:20:56 > 0:21:02Absolutely.

0:21:02 > 0:21:05We have had our top three ever Magic Weekend attendances

0:21:05 > 0:21:06here in Newcastle.

0:21:06 > 0:21:07It has been a big success story.

0:21:07 > 0:21:08The fans love it.

0:21:08 > 0:21:09It's a great story.

0:21:09 > 0:21:13It gets ticks all round.

0:21:13 > 0:21:16So why are you hinting that it is moving?

0:21:16 > 0:21:19Well, we always look to review it every two or three years.

0:21:19 > 0:21:22So that's one reason.

0:21:22 > 0:21:24The second reason is that we now have an international calendar

0:21:24 > 0:21:28leading up to the World Cup in 2021, so we know we've got the Kiwis

0:21:28 > 0:21:31coming over next year, the Aussies in 2020 and the World Cup in 2021.

0:21:31 > 0:21:34So it gives us a chance to put our events out

0:21:34 > 0:21:37to a bidding process.

0:21:37 > 0:21:43Newcastle has been the spiritual home in the last three years,

0:21:43 > 0:21:45but Liverpool is bidding for the Commonwealth Games.

0:21:45 > 0:21:48There is a lot of support for the Etihad in Manchester,

0:21:48 > 0:21:50and there are new stadiums coming on board.

0:21:50 > 0:21:51Coventry, London and so on.

0:21:51 > 0:21:54So it's only fair to make sure we put it out to tender

0:21:54 > 0:21:56and may the best city win.

0:21:56 > 0:22:01Do you see it staying as this extra round and still being Super League?

0:22:01 > 0:22:06Certainly for next year.

0:22:06 > 0:22:10We have said we are reviewing a lot of things at the moment, and trying

0:22:10 > 0:22:13to optimise the calendar as best we can, but I think Magic Weekend

0:22:13 > 0:22:16is one of those things that is not broken, so why fix it?

0:22:16 > 0:22:19So certainly for next year, Magic Weekend is here to stay.

0:22:19 > 0:22:21There are those who say actually, that extra game

0:22:21 > 0:22:22does skew the league.

0:22:22 > 0:22:25There are those who say we should be more innovative and bring

0:22:25 > 0:22:27it in with the nines and Commonwealth Games and so on.

0:22:27 > 0:22:35But for the time being, Magic works and all the clubs and fans love it.

0:22:35 > 0:22:44Thank you for joining us.

0:23:02 > 0:23:05These two teams were meeting for the first time at the Magic Weekend,

0:23:05 > 0:23:08and it took nearly 20 minutes for them to register some points.

0:23:08 > 0:23:10Maggie takes on debut for with the saw his pass

0:23:10 > 0:23:13intercepted by Ben Jones Bishop, and only a great tackle

0:23:13 > 0:23:14by Ryan Innes prevented the winner from going over.

0:23:14 > 0:23:17But the respite for Super League's bottom team was only brief,

0:23:17 > 0:23:19and two plays later, Trinity were in front.

0:23:19 > 0:23:22The influential Scot Griggs found his way over from close range

0:23:22 > 0:23:24for the first of his two tries of the afternoon.

0:23:24 > 0:23:26There were two more tries for Trinity before half-time

0:23:26 > 0:23:29as they searched for a third consecutive Super League with.

0:23:29 > 0:23:33as they searched for a third consecutive Super League win.

0:23:34 > 0:23:37Lynn put them 10-0 up crossing for his fourth try of the season

0:23:37 > 0:23:39and then straight from the scrum, Wakefield worked the ball

0:23:39 > 0:23:42to their left hand side before Jacob Miller said Scot Griggs.

0:23:42 > 0:23:50The full-back found a gap and another four points.

0:23:50 > 0:23:53Much to ponder for Denis Betts, whose team were looking

0:23:53 > 0:24:01for only their third win of the season, a task not helped

0:24:01 > 0:24:04by a sinbinning for Lloyd White just before half-time.

0:24:04 > 0:24:05Referee Chris Kendall was unhappy with the challenge

0:24:05 > 0:24:08on Mason Katyn Brown.

0:24:08 > 0:24:12Widnes have three players making their debuts,

0:24:12 > 0:24:15and the Vikings fell further behind just a minute into the second half,

0:24:15 > 0:24:18Ben Jones Bishop with his now familiar looking finish

0:24:18 > 0:24:21in the corner.

0:24:21 > 0:24:24But finally in the 47th minute, Widnes gave their own fans something

0:24:24 > 0:24:30to shout about and it was arguably the try of the match.

0:24:30 > 0:24:33Breaking down the right-hand side, Ed Chamberlain flicked

0:24:33 > 0:24:35a pass to Ryan Innes, and the winger cut inside to Widnes'

0:24:36 > 0:24:45first points of the afternoon.

0:24:46 > 0:24:50But any help for those in black-and-white stripes was brief.

0:24:50 > 0:24:53Liam Finn kicked a penalty and then Ben Jones Bishop went over again

0:24:53 > 0:24:55on the Wakefield right, his 12th try of a productive season.

0:24:55 > 0:24:58Six minutes from time, Rangi Chase once again failed

0:24:58 > 0:25:01to find one of his new team-mates and Matty Ashurst happily dived over

0:25:01 > 0:25:07to put Wakefield out of sight.

0:25:07 > 0:25:12The top eight may now be out of sight for Widnes too.

0:25:12 > 0:25:15Hep Cahill's late try was no more than a consolation for the Vikings,

0:25:15 > 0:25:18who remain at the foot of the table and seven points adrift

0:25:18 > 0:25:19of the top eight.

0:25:19 > 0:25:26Wakefield, though, continue to fly high.

0:25:26 > 0:25:28You must be pleased with that.

0:25:28 > 0:25:31Yeah, we were pretty ruthless.

0:25:31 > 0:25:34I thought that first half, we strangled them with the field

0:25:34 > 0:25:39position we have and defended really tough as well.

0:25:39 > 0:25:42They're a good side, Widnes, and to keep them to two scores,

0:25:42 > 0:25:45I'm really pleased.

0:25:45 > 0:25:47We are all fighting hard.

0:25:47 > 0:25:50The lads are injured and they're trying to get on their feet.

0:25:50 > 0:25:56That's the hardest part.

0:25:56 > 0:25:58It's not just about having people back fit.

0:25:58 > 0:26:01This is a tough game and it can take a couple of weeks

0:26:01 > 0:26:06to get to that position where you feel more durable.

0:26:06 > 0:26:08We genuinely feel we can get in that top four.

0:26:08 > 0:26:10It's a long shot, but we keep ticking away nicely.

0:26:10 > 0:26:13We keep picking up the wins, and who knows what we could

0:26:13 > 0:26:18achieve as a group.

0:26:18 > 0:26:21So, the first day is done and we're on to day two

0:26:21 > 0:26:22of the Magic Weekend.

0:26:22 > 0:26:25What was the standout for you of day one?

0:26:25 > 0:26:35You would have to say the centre halves performance.

0:26:35 > 0:26:37You would have to say the St Helens performance.

0:26:37 > 0:26:39The new coach, Justin Holbrook, has done a fantastic job

0:26:39 > 0:26:40coming in to prepare.

0:26:40 > 0:26:42He lifted the pressure off the team.

0:26:42 > 0:26:45We saw St Helens play with a bit of a smile on their face.

0:26:45 > 0:26:48They looked as though they were enjoying the rugby again

0:26:48 > 0:26:49and they looked impressive.

0:26:49 > 0:26:51Everybody tipped Hull to win that game and they dominated.

0:26:51 > 0:26:53That was the star performance of the day.

0:26:53 > 0:26:55The opening match, Wakefield were really clinical.

0:26:55 > 0:26:58They did what they needed to do.

0:26:58 > 0:27:00For Widnes, difficult with so many players coming

0:27:00 > 0:27:01in and so many players out.

0:27:01 > 0:27:02Can Rangi make a difference?

0:27:02 > 0:27:04He didn't have a good day.

0:27:04 > 0:27:09He didn't.

0:27:09 > 0:27:18Widnes still have a lot of injuries and are not.

0:27:20 > 0:27:23Widnes still have a lot of injuries and are not up to full complement.

0:27:23 > 0:27:25But you can't take anything away from Wakefield.

0:27:25 > 0:27:28They are on 16 points now in the league and nobody tipped them

0:27:28 > 0:27:30to be up there at the start.

0:27:30 > 0:27:32They look a really accomplished side and they could

0:27:32 > 0:27:33challenge the top four.

0:27:33 > 0:27:36And the drama of the day in the final match, with Wigan

0:27:36 > 0:27:38and Warrington and both coaches bitterly disappointed.

0:27:38 > 0:27:41You think with a draw that late, somebody will be euphoric,

0:27:41 > 0:27:44but not a bit of it.

0:27:44 > 0:27:45Both coaches were disappointed for different reasons.

0:27:45 > 0:27:47John Webb was disappointed because they got into a winning

0:27:47 > 0:27:49position two scores up and were looking comfortable

0:27:49 > 0:27:51and they ran out of steam.

0:27:51 > 0:27:53Tony Smith was hugely disappointed with 20 or 30 seconds to go.

0:27:53 > 0:27:57They had a 4-point lead and to let that go, he will be devastated.

0:27:57 > 0:28:07On reflection, the 24-24 was a fair result.

0:28:08 > 0:28:15First up on day two, we have Catalan against Huddersfield.

0:28:15 > 0:28:18And one man who arrived at the Magic Weekend in style

0:28:18 > 0:28:21but probably a bit sore was Eorl Crabtree.

0:28:21 > 0:28:24He cycled 120 miles to be here this weekend, all in memory of the Giants

0:28:24 > 0:28:26academy player Ronan Castello, who died after sustaining

0:28:26 > 0:28:29a serious head injury in an academy match last year.

0:28:29 > 0:28:32Sadly, Ronan Castello passed away almost a year ago through a brain

0:28:32 > 0:28:33injury during the game.

0:28:33 > 0:28:36So we're trying to raise their profile and a bit of money for them.

0:28:36 > 0:28:38We've had a good start so far.

0:28:38 > 0:28:44Around ?1,000.

0:28:44 > 0:28:47Trying to build that up, but it's been a tough ride.

0:28:47 > 0:28:4991 miles on the first day was tough.

0:28:49 > 0:28:51It rained all the way.

0:28:51 > 0:28:54I got double cramp in both hamstrings, so I was struggling.

0:28:54 > 0:28:55We all battled through it.

0:28:55 > 0:29:00We knew what it was for.

0:29:00 > 0:29:03It's a rugby league family and this is where the fans come together.

0:29:03 > 0:29:06You get a lot of attention as soon as you come.

0:29:06 > 0:29:08You get a bit of stick for wearing lycra,

0:29:08 > 0:29:13but it's all for a good cause.

0:29:13 > 0:29:16This was a fifth straight defeat for Catalan and proved to be

0:29:16 > 0:29:19the final act for the Dragons' head coach, who was sacked

0:29:19 > 0:29:26on Monday morning.

0:29:26 > 0:29:30Yet Catalan had the crowd on their feet with the opening score

0:29:30 > 0:29:33of the game after just four minutes, Richie Myler celebrating his 27th

0:29:33 > 0:29:34birthday with an eye-catching try.

0:29:34 > 0:29:38It was all square by half-time, though.

0:29:38 > 0:29:44The Giants levelled things up at 6-6.

0:29:44 > 0:29:46Ten minutes into the second half, Ian Thornley went over

0:29:46 > 0:29:49on the left-hand side to put Catalan 10-6 up and seemingly

0:29:49 > 0:29:51on course for their first win in the middle of April.

0:29:51 > 0:29:54And that result looked even more likely when Greg Bird touched

0:29:54 > 0:30:02down for the Dragons.

0:30:02 > 0:30:05But his 65th minute effort was sent upstairs and eventually ruled out

0:30:05 > 0:30:07by the video referee, Richie Myler ruled to have

0:30:07 > 0:30:16obstructed Lee Gaskell as the ball came down.

0:30:17 > 0:30:24And Catalans' 4-point lead proved not to be enough for the Dragons.

0:30:24 > 0:30:28Huddersfield got level with just eight minutes to play,

0:30:28 > 0:30:30much to the delight of Giants' chairman Ken Davey, who then

0:30:30 > 0:30:33saw his side snatch the victory as Adam Brown got his

0:30:33 > 0:30:34first Huddersfield try,

0:30:35 > 0:30:37sealing the Giants' fourth win of the season.

0:30:37 > 0:30:46sealing the Giants' fourth win of the season.

0:30:46 > 0:30:48How important for your guys to keep building on this?

0:30:48 > 0:30:54It's pretty important for us in the context of the competition.

0:30:54 > 0:30:58We need to keep taking every drop out of this as far as momentum goes

0:30:58 > 0:30:59and use it in a positive manner.

0:30:59 > 0:31:02Tough today, but some very good defensive effort for 70 minutes.

0:31:03 > 0:31:12But we let the win past us.

0:31:12 > 0:31:15One of the difficulties for the teams at Magic Weekend

0:31:15 > 0:31:17is that they have to warm up away from the stadium.

0:31:17 > 0:31:21Salford are about to warm up.

0:31:21 > 0:31:24With me is the assistant coach.

0:31:24 > 0:31:27How tricky are the logistics of getting ready for Magic?

0:31:27 > 0:31:29A bit more difficult.

0:31:29 > 0:31:31It takes more planning for the conditions and the staff

0:31:31 > 0:31:34with the three minute walk from the changing rooms.

0:31:34 > 0:31:36So we're out a bit earlier than normal.

0:31:36 > 0:31:40Obviously, the dimensions are not too big either,

0:31:40 > 0:31:43so we've had to adapt the warm up a bit, but we'll

0:31:43 > 0:31:46still get ready for kick-off.

0:31:46 > 0:31:49How are the guys ahead of their first experience of Magic Weekend?

0:31:49 > 0:31:52Really good, really excited.

0:31:52 > 0:31:56It's a real challenge to play in front of so many

0:31:56 > 0:31:58people at a neutral venue.

0:31:58 > 0:32:01Obviously, a lot of the players have experienced the Blackpool Bash,

0:32:01 > 0:32:03but this is a different kettle of fish and the players

0:32:03 > 0:32:05are looking forward to it.

0:32:05 > 0:32:07Could it be the fillip they need to turn around their form?

0:32:07 > 0:32:08That's what we're hoping.

0:32:08 > 0:32:11We're hoping the pressure will be off away from home.

0:32:11 > 0:32:14We're playing a good team in Salford that has not lost many

0:32:14 > 0:32:15games and they're used to winning.

0:32:15 > 0:32:18But if we're going to turn it around, why not today?

0:32:18 > 0:32:22The players are confident in what we've asked from them

0:32:22 > 0:32:28and they've trained well.

0:32:28 > 0:32:31We've had a weekend off, so we are coming into it fresh.

0:32:31 > 0:32:33You'd better get back to warming them up.

0:32:33 > 0:32:36Let's see how Leigh get on against Salford.

0:32:36 > 0:32:39Liam Hood.

0:32:39 > 0:32:48He's round O'Brien!

0:32:51 > 0:32:54Johnson comes across.

0:32:54 > 0:32:56Robert Lui will get him in the end.

0:32:56 > 0:33:05Good chance for the Leigh Centurions.

0:33:07 > 0:33:09Opening try, a try on debut as well.

0:33:09 > 0:33:10Matthew Fleming is in.

0:33:10 > 0:33:11Robert Lui.

0:33:11 > 0:33:12Dummy half to Dobson.

0:33:12 > 0:33:13Dobson kicks.

0:33:13 > 0:33:14It's a bit of a mess.

0:33:14 > 0:33:15Salford hit straight back.

0:33:15 > 0:33:16No messing around.

0:33:16 > 0:33:24Tomkins.

0:33:24 > 0:33:28Harrison Hansen defending.

0:33:28 > 0:33:30A bit of mucking around there.

0:33:30 > 0:33:33Leigh's captain will be penalised.

0:33:33 > 0:33:38Hands on the ball.

0:33:38 > 0:33:40O'Brien.

0:33:40 > 0:33:42Slotted between the uprights.

0:33:42 > 0:33:47Salford keep the ball ticking over.

0:33:47 > 0:33:49Here is Liam Hood.

0:33:49 > 0:33:51Drinkwater looks left again.

0:33:51 > 0:33:52Chance again, try again!

0:33:52 > 0:34:00It's the full-back, Mitch Brown.

0:34:00 > 0:34:03Leigh Centurions making hay down the left for the second

0:34:03 > 0:34:04time this afternoon.

0:34:04 > 0:34:05Tomkins to Dobson.

0:34:05 > 0:34:06Dobson looks right.

0:34:06 > 0:34:11Can he get the ball down?

0:34:11 > 0:34:14The referee will have a look at that.

0:34:14 > 0:34:23Let's have a look.

0:34:23 > 0:34:25Big old beast.

0:34:25 > 0:34:29More Godzilla than Masila!

0:34:29 > 0:34:38Tomkins looks right, sees Dobson.

0:34:38 > 0:34:40Opportunities here.

0:34:40 > 0:34:49Does what he does best!

0:34:49 > 0:34:53Scoring another try for Salford, and the Leigh fans don't like that.

0:34:53 > 0:34:55Here is Tomkins, to Dobson.

0:34:55 > 0:35:00This looks familiar.

0:35:00 > 0:35:02Johnson cuts in!

0:35:02 > 0:35:06And Greg Johnson scores another and the Red Devils

0:35:06 > 0:35:13are ratcheting up the pressure.

0:35:13 > 0:35:16What can Leigh do to start the second half?

0:35:16 > 0:35:17They could start it well with this!

0:35:17 > 0:35:18Brooks breaks through.

0:35:18 > 0:35:21Murdoch Masila gets in and Brooks may have just

0:35:21 > 0:35:26handed Leigh a lifeline.

0:35:26 > 0:35:32The Centurions needed that.

0:35:32 > 0:35:35Here is Robert Lui.

0:35:35 > 0:35:38Oh, dear me, that did not look good at all.

0:35:38 > 0:35:41And it looks even worse there.

0:35:41 > 0:35:47That could be that.

0:35:47 > 0:35:51The referee brandishes the red card.

0:35:51 > 0:35:56Salford down to 12.

0:35:56 > 0:36:02Dobson, across the front of the uprights.

0:36:02 > 0:36:06Scores!

0:36:06 > 0:36:08Nice finish.

0:36:08 > 0:36:15Salford home and hosed, you would think.

0:36:15 > 0:36:18Paterson now.

0:36:18 > 0:36:26This is good.

0:36:26 > 0:36:29Dawson will score.

0:36:29 > 0:36:31Could be just a Centurions consolation, but they keep

0:36:31 > 0:36:34chasing down Salford.

0:36:34 > 0:36:38Dawson with the try in the corner.

0:36:38 > 0:36:47Michael Dobson again.

0:36:47 > 0:36:49Johnson.

0:36:49 > 0:36:50Two!

0:36:50 > 0:36:54Johnson's second.

0:36:54 > 0:37:01I think the referee might have a look at this.

0:37:01 > 0:37:02Robert Hicks, the video referee.

0:37:03 > 0:37:04Krasniqi knocks it backwards.

0:37:04 > 0:37:07And Dobson through Lui's legs.

0:37:07 > 0:37:17A couple of nutmegs.

0:37:23 > 0:37:28Then we check the grounding.

0:37:28 > 0:37:36That will be a try.

0:37:36 > 0:37:40Josh Jones does well to keep going and battering his way into Paterson.

0:37:40 > 0:37:43Leigh will try and slow this down.

0:37:43 > 0:37:53Jones tried to get up there, but was held down.

0:37:56 > 0:37:58Jones tried to get up there, but was held down.

0:37:58 > 0:38:01And Dobson will slot another two points on the scoreboard

0:38:01 > 0:38:05for the Salford Red Devils.

0:38:05 > 0:38:13It's no fluke that they're in the top four, this side.

0:38:13 > 0:38:15It's no fluke that they're in the top four, this side.

0:38:15 > 0:38:18I don't think you can question the effort of the boys.

0:38:18 > 0:38:21Every time we scored a try, we conceded a try on the back of it.

0:38:21 > 0:38:23We have to get some hardness into the game.

0:38:23 > 0:38:25It's good that we got the points.

0:38:25 > 0:38:27There were bits of our performance we weren't happy

0:38:27 > 0:38:29with and that's something to fix.

0:38:29 > 0:38:35But it's good that you can get the win.

0:38:35 > 0:38:38Castleford Tigers were top of the table coming into the weekend.

0:38:38 > 0:38:40They were top of the bill on Sunday.

0:38:40 > 0:38:41Their opponents, their local rivals, Leeds.

0:38:41 > 0:38:51Watching this one was Dave Woods.

0:38:53 > 0:38:55Castleford are working their way back into position here.

0:38:55 > 0:38:56Two tackles still to go.

0:38:56 > 0:38:57Here is Gayle with a kick.

0:38:57 > 0:38:59It's been spilt and caught by Gayle!

0:38:59 > 0:39:07And Castleford have their opening try.

0:39:07 > 0:39:09Confusion at the back for Leeds, and Castleford prosper.

0:39:09 > 0:39:18McGuire beginning to look threatening...

0:39:33 > 0:39:35This is good from Leeds now.

0:39:35 > 0:39:37Intent here already to go wide, and to go wide with effect.

0:39:37 > 0:39:41The chance to go the distance, and no one is going to catch him.

0:39:41 > 0:39:43Greg Eden, with a try out of the top drawer.

0:39:43 > 0:39:45That is Castleford in 90 yards.

0:39:45 > 0:39:54But hang on, the thrill might be taken away here.

0:39:58 > 0:40:07They are looking for obstruction.

0:40:09 > 0:40:11We've got the try.

0:40:11 > 0:40:14So he says try on the field, but have a look at this.

0:40:14 > 0:40:15Michael Shenton runs in.

0:40:15 > 0:40:18Has he done enough for this to be given as an obstruction?

0:40:18 > 0:40:26Yes, he has.

0:40:26 > 0:40:27It's taken away, that glorious moment.

0:40:27 > 0:40:30So Sutcliffe, with a chance to make it all square.

0:40:30 > 0:40:32And that is quite a return for Leeds just before half-time.

0:40:33 > 0:40:38They will take that.

0:40:38 > 0:40:47They have quelled the Castleford fire.

0:40:50 > 0:40:51Here is McShane.

0:40:51 > 0:40:52Cook.

0:40:52 > 0:40:55They have a bit of space here.

0:40:55 > 0:40:58They have got the numbers, they have got Eden!

0:40:58 > 0:41:07His first try of the afternoon.

0:41:15 > 0:41:16McShane again gets them motoring.

0:41:16 > 0:41:17Moores is going through here.

0:41:17 > 0:41:19And he's got the off-load to Holmes.

0:41:19 > 0:41:21Leeds are backtracking, McShane with a one-handed pick-up.

0:41:21 > 0:41:22What a pass from Shenton!

0:41:22 > 0:41:31Michael Shenton with a miracle pass.

0:41:36 > 0:41:39And Eden scores the try, but have a look at this.

0:41:39 > 0:41:48Absolutely sensational.

0:41:53 > 0:41:56It has gone straight into the hands of Holmes, and he has pace.

0:41:56 > 0:41:58Tom Holmes, the youngster, fulfilling that Castleford category

0:41:58 > 0:41:59with another wonder try.

0:41:59 > 0:42:09Webster.

0:42:23 > 0:42:26He has shaken off his injury from earlier in the game.

0:42:26 > 0:42:29McShane was asking if there was another set of six to be had.

0:42:29 > 0:42:32There's not, so they only have one chance to score,

0:42:32 > 0:42:33and Shenton will take that chance again.

0:42:33 > 0:42:36It's a hat-trick from Eden, but he has got so much

0:42:36 > 0:42:44to thank his centre, Michael Shenton, for.

0:42:44 > 0:42:46Castleford again, quick as a flash.

0:42:46 > 0:42:52Leeds put to the sword.

0:42:52 > 0:42:55It can only be about consolation now for Leeds.

0:42:55 > 0:42:57Looking for something to put a smile on their face

0:42:57 > 0:43:07at the end of Magic Weekend, and a try!

0:43:12 > 0:43:14He is going to go for the drop goal...

0:43:14 > 0:43:23He's got the drop goal!

0:43:32 > 0:43:35It's knocked down by Handley, but the hooter will sound.

0:43:35 > 0:43:42It's been fabulous again from the Tigers.

0:43:42 > 0:43:44The clock is counting down on another Castleford win.

0:43:44 > 0:43:47It's knocked down by Handley, but the hooter will sound.

0:43:47 > 0:43:57It's been fabulous again from the Tigers.

0:43:57 > 0:44:00Some of the class on our left hand side today was world class.

0:44:00 > 0:44:01It was outstanding.

0:44:01 > 0:44:02I thought we got our game together.

0:44:02 > 0:44:04It was a tough game.

0:44:04 > 0:44:07We said that at half-time but I thought it was a perfect game

0:44:07 > 0:44:11for us in terms of developing as a team.

0:44:11 > 0:44:15Being in a big stadium like this, different environment,

0:44:15 > 0:44:19having to deal with all sorts of things, a team that is coming

0:44:19 > 0:44:22after us like Leeds were, and we found a way out of it.

0:44:22 > 0:44:25We were too good for Leeds in the second half.

0:44:25 > 0:44:27It was an outstanding second half.

0:44:27 > 0:44:29We conceded a couple of ones towards the end,

0:44:29 > 0:44:31but we had done enough to win the game.

0:44:31 > 0:44:41So I was delighted with the second half and that whole game.

0:44:41 > 0:44:43We have a job out there and Greg Eden was sensational.

0:44:43 > 0:44:45His execution was awesome.

0:44:45 > 0:44:50He deserved all three of his tries.

0:44:50 > 0:44:52He has worked hard right from when he signed here.

0:44:52 > 0:44:58I think he has developed this season and he is playing well.

0:44:58 > 0:45:01We've been beaten by a very good team in Castleford.

0:45:01 > 0:45:04But what we showed is that we are ourselves a very good team.

0:45:04 > 0:45:07We're trading punches with a team at the top of the tree.

0:45:07 > 0:45:11They have a lot of confidence in how they go about things.

0:45:11 > 0:45:16That period just after half-time, that deflated us a bit.

0:45:16 > 0:45:17We didn't handle that.

0:45:17 > 0:45:20It's about what you do on the field and where you position

0:45:20 > 0:45:21yourself defensively.

0:45:21 > 0:45:24Concentration, or lack of concentration, was key.

0:45:24 > 0:45:33Then we went into a crazy period.

0:45:35 > 0:45:37If you consider that we kept in the fight,

0:45:37 > 0:45:40there are some real positives.

0:45:40 > 0:45:42And there's optimism about what we're doing.

0:45:42 > 0:45:44But obviously, there are some things we can't do

0:45:44 > 0:45:45against a team like that.

0:45:45 > 0:45:48Iestyn, it's fair to say we saved the best till last.

0:45:48 > 0:45:54Yes, Castleford Tigers were scintillating at times.

0:45:54 > 0:45:56They probably didn't put a full 80 minute performance in.

0:45:56 > 0:45:58But did Leeds let them?

0:45:58 > 0:46:02I thought Leeds were much improved from where they were ten weeks ago.

0:46:02 > 0:46:05They have been improving, but it was a real test for them today.

0:46:05 > 0:46:08They matched them for large parts of the game, but Castleford have

0:46:08 > 0:46:11another gear when they need it.

0:46:11 > 0:46:16That pass from Michael Shenton was excellent.

0:46:16 > 0:46:19The difference between the two teams was Grant Millington.

0:46:19 > 0:46:21He was all over the park.

0:46:21 > 0:46:24He is the real linchpin in the middle of the field

0:46:24 > 0:46:27for Castleford Tigers.

0:46:27 > 0:46:30We have really seen a gulf in quality, though,

0:46:30 > 0:46:34between that game and some of the others this weekend.

0:46:34 > 0:46:37The biggest difference for me was between game one today,

0:46:37 > 0:46:41which was Catalan and Huddersfield, versus the intensity

0:46:41 > 0:46:42of the last game.

0:46:42 > 0:46:48It was chalk and cheese.

0:46:48 > 0:46:51There is a big difference from the top of Super League

0:46:51 > 0:46:53towards the bottom of Super League, but you can't take anything

0:46:53 > 0:46:56away from the quality of the last game we saw today.

0:46:56 > 0:46:58How would you sum up the weekend overall?

0:46:58 > 0:46:59I've enjoyed it.

0:46:59 > 0:47:00There's been some entertaining rugby league.

0:47:00 > 0:47:04The fans have enjoyed it.

0:47:04 > 0:47:06There have been differences in quality from top to bottom,

0:47:06 > 0:47:10which is something we have to address as a game.

0:47:10 > 0:47:12But as an entertaining weekend, it's been fantastic.

0:47:12 > 0:47:16I think Newcastle is a great event to have.

0:47:16 > 0:47:18There's a lot of debate about whether we move or not.

0:47:18 > 0:47:22I think we should stick with it, because everybody's enjoyed it.

0:47:22 > 0:47:25So, Magic is over for another year.

0:47:25 > 0:47:34Let's see how it leaves things in the Betfred Super League table.

0:47:43 > 0:47:45So that's it from Newcastle.

0:47:45 > 0:47:49We're back in the studio next week, when we will have a double

0:47:49 > 0:47:51round of Super League to bring you.

0:47:51 > 0:48:00But from Iestyn and from me, goodbye.

0:48:06 > 0:48:09MUSIC: Fire by Beth Ditto

0:48:09 > 0:48:11Queer, to me, is power.

0:48:12 > 0:48:15I always say we're the broken biscuits in the box.

0:48:15 > 0:48:18Anyone that feels queer IS queer.

0:48:19 > 0:48:22What's it like to be queer in the UK?
