0:00:32 > 0:00:34Hello.

0:00:34 > 0:00:35The 2018 rugby Super League season is underway.

0:00:35 > 0:00:38We're back in the land of Giants.

0:00:38 > 0:00:40And the hills are once again alive with the sound

0:00:40 > 0:00:48of Super League.

0:00:48 > 0:00:50# Raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens.

0:00:50 > 0:00:53# Bright copper kettles and warm woollen mittens.

0:00:53 > 0:00:56# Brown paper packages tied up with string.

0:00:56 > 0:01:03# These are a few of my favourite things.

0:01:03 > 0:01:06# Girls in white dresses with blue satin sashes.

0:01:06 > 0:01:11# Snowflakes that stay on my nose and eyelashes.

0:01:11 > 0:01:13# Silver white winters that melt into spring.

0:01:13 > 0:01:17# These are a few of my favourite things.

0:01:17 > 0:01:19# When the dog bites.

0:01:19 > 0:01:21# When the bee stings.

0:01:21 > 0:01:24# When I'm feeling sad.

0:01:24 > 0:01:28# I simply remember my favourite things.

0:01:28 > 0:01:38# And then I don't feel so bad!

0:01:42 > 0:01:46We've re-united Danny McGuire with one of his favourite things.

0:01:46 > 0:01:49The eight time Grand Final winner is alongside John Kear to pick out

0:01:49 > 0:01:52the highs and lows of week one.

0:01:52 > 0:01:58Danny, obviously now over that Hull Kingston

0:01:58 > 0:02:02Rovers, was nice to get the debut out of the way so we stop

0:02:02 > 0:02:04asking you about being a Hull KR player?!

0:02:04 > 0:02:05Yes, it was.

0:02:05 > 0:02:06It was nice to get out there.

0:02:06 > 0:02:09I think pre season everybody enjoys it, it is always

0:02:09 > 0:02:11tough, but the real business is the start of the season.

0:02:11 > 0:02:13I think everybody has missed Super League.

0:02:13 > 0:02:16So it was great to get out there on Friday night.

0:02:16 > 0:02:19There has been a lot of talking off the pitch in terms of

0:02:19 > 0:02:21what is going on at the RFL.

0:02:21 > 0:02:23And are we going to have a new structure for

0:02:23 > 0:02:242019.

0:02:24 > 0:02:25And we're still none the wiser.

0:02:25 > 0:02:28Does that affect players and coaches going into a campaign?

0:02:28 > 0:02:29In a word, no.

0:02:29 > 0:02:31All players and coaches want to do is win.

0:02:31 > 0:02:33And that is all the preparation is designed for.

0:02:33 > 0:02:35And we leave the administration up to the administrators.

0:02:35 > 0:02:36We will indeed.

0:02:36 > 0:02:46Staying with the theme of favourites,

0:02:46 > 0:02:49St Helens and Castleford tipped by many as the most likely

0:02:49 > 0:02:50Champions this season, and they started off

0:02:50 > 0:02:52against each other on Friday.

0:02:52 > 0:02:54It was their first meeting since that epic play-off semi-final.

0:02:54 > 0:02:55Well, what a start.

0:02:55 > 0:02:56Great pass!

0:02:56 > 0:02:57Fantastic finish.

0:02:57 > 0:02:58Brilliant contest so far.

0:02:58 > 0:02:59And Luke Walsh scores.

0:02:59 > 0:03:00An absolute screamer!

0:03:00 > 0:03:05Saint Helens have just produced a play-off miracle!

0:03:05 > 0:03:11We are into extra time.

0:03:11 > 0:03:18Luke Gale has won it!

0:03:18 > 0:03:22Here is Regan Grace out of dummy half.

0:03:22 > 0:03:24To test the resolve of that Castleford defence.

0:03:25 > 0:03:28Roby.

0:03:28 > 0:03:31Lomax up to the line, the pass away for Percival.

0:03:31 > 0:03:34He's got the break and got the support.

0:03:34 > 0:03:37It's going to be Ben Barba who will sprint to the line.

0:03:37 > 0:03:39What a start to a season by Barba.

0:03:39 > 0:03:43What a start for St Helens.

0:03:43 > 0:03:44Four minutes played and an eye-catching

0:03:44 > 0:03:50try produced already.

0:03:50 > 0:03:52Trying to get out of it is Thompson.

0:03:52 > 0:03:55Roby again, the pass away to Wilkin.

0:03:55 > 0:03:56And he's made the cut and thrust.

0:03:56 > 0:04:00Barba back on the inside.

0:04:00 > 0:04:02Castleford defence is back there, but he's got Roby and then further

0:04:02 > 0:04:07left and Zeb Taia will score St Helen's second try.

0:04:07 > 0:04:10Thrill a minute stuff at the moment from Saints.

0:04:10 > 0:04:16Two tries in three minutes.

0:04:16 > 0:04:18Roby.

0:04:18 > 0:04:19Castleford back on their own line again.

0:04:20 > 0:04:21Richardson.

0:04:21 > 0:04:22Switching direction.

0:04:22 > 0:04:23Not sure where he's going.

0:04:23 > 0:04:25So back to Barba.

0:04:25 > 0:04:28He is asking the referee how many tackles to go.

0:04:28 > 0:04:29Just the one.

0:04:29 > 0:04:30So into the in-goal area.

0:04:30 > 0:04:32Lomax is claiming it.

0:04:32 > 0:04:37The referee unsurprisingly is asking the question.

0:04:37 > 0:04:46But Alex Walmsley here might just have produced something special.

0:04:46 > 0:04:48He's saying no try on the field.

0:04:48 > 0:04:49Have a look at this.

0:04:49 > 0:04:50Walmsley going through.

0:04:50 > 0:04:51His feet are in play.

0:04:51 > 0:04:54He knocks the ball backwards and Lomax touches down.

0:04:54 > 0:04:56It is a try.

0:04:56 > 0:05:04Spectacular stuff and Walmsley, the architect in so many ways.

0:05:04 > 0:05:06Roby.

0:05:06 > 0:05:12It's going to be a kick by Lomax.

0:05:12 > 0:05:14And Ben Roberts didn't seem to make too much

0:05:14 > 0:05:15of an effort to get to that.

0:05:15 > 0:05:18And it is a 40/20.

0:05:18 > 0:05:21So advantage, St Helens.

0:05:21 > 0:05:25Terrific kick from Lomax has put them in this position.

0:05:25 > 0:05:28McCarthy-Scarsbrook.

0:05:28 > 0:05:31Castleford in desperate straits again here.

0:05:31 > 0:05:34They can ill afford to concede a fourth.

0:05:34 > 0:05:36Richardson.

0:05:36 > 0:05:38Quick hands.

0:05:38 > 0:05:40Short, handy pass from Barba.

0:05:40 > 0:05:43And Percival is over for his first of the season.

0:05:43 > 0:05:49Wonderful stuff from St Helens.

0:05:49 > 0:05:51Roby.

0:05:51 > 0:05:54Walmsley just to his left.

0:05:54 > 0:05:59But it's back to Richardson who puts it short for Thompson.

0:05:59 > 0:06:01Castleford again in the role of hanging on.

0:06:01 > 0:06:05On what has been a flat night so far for them.

0:06:05 > 0:06:08And it might be getting worse here, and it is.

0:06:08 > 0:06:12Percival with his second score of the evening.

0:06:12 > 0:06:19And St Helens in a real comfort zone now.

0:06:19 > 0:06:22A little bit of a tangle on the floor but Castleford

0:06:22 > 0:06:23are up and away.

0:06:23 > 0:06:25And here is Ben Roberts.

0:06:25 > 0:06:30Who has not had a great night so far tonight, Ben Roberts.

0:06:30 > 0:06:33Kyle Amor just putting a knee in there and it has caused

0:06:33 > 0:06:37a little bit of strife.

0:06:37 > 0:06:39Have a look at this.

0:06:39 > 0:06:42Kyle Amor just putting a knee in, whether something has happened

0:06:42 > 0:06:43on the floor before that...

0:06:43 > 0:06:45The referee has the decision to make.

0:06:45 > 0:06:46Oh, a sending off!

0:06:46 > 0:06:47Ten minutes.

0:06:47 > 0:06:50Yellow card is going to be produced here.

0:06:50 > 0:06:57Kyle Amor is in the sin bin for the next ten minutes.

0:06:57 > 0:06:59It is McShane.

0:06:59 > 0:07:02Castleford looking for some zip.

0:07:02 > 0:07:05On a night when they've been strangely flat and lacklustre.

0:07:05 > 0:07:09Can they find a gear or two higher here?

0:07:09 > 0:07:11MacShane goes out at dummy half.

0:07:11 > 0:07:12Going left.

0:07:12 > 0:07:13The off-load.

0:07:13 > 0:07:14MacShane is over!

0:07:14 > 0:07:18Good hands from James Green.

0:07:18 > 0:07:21And a hooker is in and is that the start button

0:07:21 > 0:07:26for Castleford's season?

0:07:26 > 0:07:29Barba.

0:07:29 > 0:07:31Richardson.

0:07:31 > 0:07:32Slinging it along the line.

0:07:32 > 0:07:33Roby.

0:07:33 > 0:07:36Just finding position here.

0:07:36 > 0:07:38Putting themselves within five metres of that

0:07:38 > 0:07:41Castleford line again.

0:07:41 > 0:07:44Roby.

0:07:44 > 0:07:47Theo Fages with the pass away.

0:07:47 > 0:07:51Lovely inside ball and Ben Barba is going to smuggle himself over,

0:07:51 > 0:07:51I think he's got that down.

0:07:51 > 0:07:52He has.

0:07:52 > 0:07:54And it's a brace for Barba.

0:07:54 > 0:08:00On a night full of smiles for St Helens.

0:08:00 > 0:08:02Roby.

0:08:02 > 0:08:04Roby again.

0:08:04 > 0:08:06What a great performance he's produced as well tonight.

0:08:06 > 0:08:08Wilkin there in support.

0:08:08 > 0:08:11Roby waits at dummy half.

0:08:11 > 0:08:14Here's Theo Fages.

0:08:14 > 0:08:17Inside ball might have been for Barba but outside ball

0:08:17 > 0:08:20is an easy stroll to the line for Zeb Taia.

0:08:20 > 0:08:22Another St Helens try.

0:08:22 > 0:08:30They're running amok now.

0:08:30 > 0:08:32Roby.

0:08:32 > 0:08:35Wilkin on to Fages.

0:08:35 > 0:08:37Barba chiming in from full-back.

0:08:37 > 0:08:39And off he goes!

0:08:39 > 0:08:40This could be spectacular.

0:08:40 > 0:08:42Barba down the left-hand side.

0:08:42 > 0:08:43Inside ball.

0:08:43 > 0:08:47Mark Percival finishes with a hat-trick.

0:08:47 > 0:08:49What a night for St Helens!

0:08:49 > 0:08:52They have sent the message out here at the start of this

0:08:52 > 0:09:00Super League season, they aim to impress.

0:09:00 > 0:09:03Danny, as you know only too well, they do not give this out after

0:09:03 > 0:09:06Round 1 but that was quite a statement of intent from Saints,

0:09:06 > 0:09:07wasn't it?

0:09:07 > 0:09:08Yes, it was.

0:09:08 > 0:09:09Fantastic performance.

0:09:09 > 0:09:11I think something you're looking for, you have built

0:09:11 > 0:09:13your foundation in preseason and worked hard.

0:09:13 > 0:09:16And then to come out and put in a performance like that,

0:09:16 > 0:09:17a great start from St Helens.

0:09:17 > 0:09:19They look a very balanced squad.

0:09:19 > 0:09:21They have got some fantastic players and

0:09:21 > 0:09:25obviously a world-class addition in Ben Barba

0:09:25 > 0:09:27who had a storming game as well.

0:09:27 > 0:09:29And a great statement of intent from Saint Helens.

0:09:29 > 0:09:30Ben Barba was really quite special.

0:09:30 > 0:09:32Not just in attack but his defensive work as

0:09:32 > 0:09:33well.

0:09:33 > 0:09:37He looks like he is raring to go and going to make a huge mark.

0:09:37 > 0:09:40Yes, I mean preseason has had a great effect upon him.

0:09:40 > 0:09:42Because he has dropped a bit of weight.

0:09:42 > 0:09:46He certainly looks very quick, very enthusiastic and very committed.

0:09:46 > 0:09:49As is demonstrated with the tackle there.

0:09:49 > 0:09:53And we have seen in the game highlights, his attacking play.

0:09:53 > 0:09:55He assists here for one try supporting

0:09:55 > 0:09:58John Wilkin initially on the inside.

0:09:58 > 0:10:01And he was just everywhere on that night.

0:10:01 > 0:10:04He really was outstanding.

0:10:04 > 0:10:06He looks silky with his skills and he

0:10:06 > 0:10:08looks effortless with his running style.

0:10:08 > 0:10:11So he really is one to watch.

0:10:11 > 0:10:13And I will certainly enjoy this season watching Ben Barba

0:10:13 > 0:10:14in the Super League.

0:10:14 > 0:10:19He has talked as well about going St Helens something for

0:10:19 > 0:10:23standing by him.

0:10:23 > 0:10:24-- owing.

0:10:24 > 0:10:27And that will count for a lot as well, won't it, in

0:10:27 > 0:10:28terms of his attitude?

0:10:28 > 0:10:30I just think he looks happy, you know.

0:10:30 > 0:10:33He has had a bit of a turbulent past in the

0:10:33 > 0:10:34NRL.

0:10:34 > 0:10:37And sometimes you can come with a fresh start and it can bring

0:10:37 > 0:10:38out the best in you.

0:10:38 > 0:10:41And he certainly looks like he is playing well at the

0:10:41 > 0:10:42minute.

0:10:42 > 0:10:43As for Castleford, embarrassing, poor, disorganised and

0:10:43 > 0:10:44sloppy, shocking attitude.

0:10:44 > 0:10:47Just a few of the things that Daryl Powell

0:10:47 > 0:10:48said.

0:10:48 > 0:10:50That won't have been a happy dressing room after.

0:10:50 > 0:10:51Not at all.

0:10:51 > 0:10:54And in the regular season last year, Castleford had the best defensive

0:10:54 > 0:10:55record in Super League.

0:10:55 > 0:10:57And it looked as if they had lost that edge

0:10:57 > 0:10:58in defence.

0:10:58 > 0:11:00That desire, that commitment, that willingness to work

0:11:00 > 0:11:03for each other.

0:11:03 > 0:11:06And I'm certain Daryl will have picked up on that.

0:11:06 > 0:11:09And he will obviously be addressing that for this week and the upcoming

0:11:09 > 0:11:10game on Sunday.

0:11:10 > 0:11:12Obviously you got beaten last season at Leeds, badly,

0:11:12 > 0:11:14by Castleford and everyone pounced on the team.

0:11:14 > 0:11:16They are pouncing on Castleford now.

0:11:16 > 0:11:18How important for them to bounce back, if nothing else

0:11:18 > 0:11:19just to take the pressure off?

0:11:19 > 0:11:22I think you've got to realise it is only Round 1.

0:11:22 > 0:11:25So I don't think you need to get too carried away.

0:11:25 > 0:11:27I think you can use it as motivation as well.

0:11:27 > 0:11:30I think any time that you underperform or you get a beating

0:11:30 > 0:11:33like that, it sort of sticks with you as a player and a team.

0:11:33 > 0:11:36And they will definitely be going back to

0:11:36 > 0:11:39that during the season and realising that is a low point.

0:11:39 > 0:11:42And obviously looking to improve this week.

0:11:42 > 0:11:45Super League in Hull is whole again, with the Red and White half

0:11:45 > 0:11:47of the city promoted to the top division.

0:11:47 > 0:11:49Hull Kingston Rovers' first game back was against

0:11:49 > 0:11:56Wakefield on Friday.

0:11:59 > 0:12:03Opening night in East Hull and the Friday night Super League

0:12:03 > 0:12:06lights were once again shining on Hull Kingston Rovers.

0:12:06 > 0:12:08Fantastic to be back in Super League.

0:12:08 > 0:12:11But it just seems like two minutes ago we were last in Super League,

0:12:11 > 0:12:13you know, last year was a bit of a blur.

0:12:13 > 0:12:15So it's great to be back.

0:12:15 > 0:12:17We had fantastic support last year.

0:12:17 > 0:12:19For the championship and that.

0:12:19 > 0:12:22And it's a credit to them, you know, the way that they

0:12:22 > 0:12:25travelled and supported us.

0:12:25 > 0:12:28So hopefully we did it for them as well and they will be out

0:12:28 > 0:12:31in numbers tonight even though it is a little bit cold.

0:12:31 > 0:12:34Yeah, it's great to have them back in the Super League.

0:12:34 > 0:12:36It's where they belong.

0:12:36 > 0:12:39You know, fantastic memories here as a player and as a coach.

0:12:39 > 0:12:40And I wish them all the best.

0:12:40 > 0:12:42But you know my future is at Wakefield Trinity

0:12:42 > 0:12:45now and we need to get a job done tonight.

0:12:45 > 0:12:48We feel we are a stronger squad than last year.

0:12:48 > 0:12:50That is no disrespect to the players that were here last year.

0:12:50 > 0:12:52But we have brought some real quality.

0:12:52 > 0:12:53Justin Horo, Pauli Pauli.

0:12:53 > 0:12:54Jordan Baldwinson and Ryan Hampshire.

0:12:54 > 0:12:57So all competitive characters and you know, all play an important

0:12:57 > 0:13:02part this year in this Wakefield Trinity team.

0:13:03 > 0:13:07Rovers recruits were headed by Danny McGuire, bringing

0:13:07 > 0:13:10Grand Final experience to that already offered by Shaun Lunt.

0:13:10 > 0:13:14Tom Johnson was back for Wakefield and it was the visitors who did most

0:13:14 > 0:13:16of the smiling in the first half.

0:13:16 > 0:13:19Just 12 minutes into their latest Super League life, the home side

0:13:19 > 0:13:28were down to 12 men.

0:13:28 > 0:13:30Tom Johnstone broke down the left.

0:13:30 > 0:13:32And as Bill Tupou looked to provide try scoring support.

0:13:32 > 0:13:35Matty Marsh brought him down and was sent to the bin.

0:13:35 > 0:13:37And with Rovers short numbers, Wakefield took full advantage.

0:13:37 > 0:13:38Here comes Finn.

0:13:38 > 0:13:40Finn to his left has got options.

0:13:40 > 0:13:41It is out towards Johnstone.

0:13:41 > 0:13:43And Johnstone acrobatically dives in in the corner.

0:13:43 > 0:13:44Here is Wood.

0:13:44 > 0:13:46Wood in turn finds Finn.

0:13:46 > 0:13:47Finn along the line to Miller.

0:13:47 > 0:13:49Tupou is in.

0:13:49 > 0:13:52And Tupou scores the second.

0:13:52 > 0:13:54It is a real pressure, this.

0:13:54 > 0:13:55Here is Wood.

0:13:55 > 0:13:56Wood to Finn.

0:13:56 > 0:13:57Finn goes himself.

0:13:57 > 0:13:59Finn is there and Finn scores the third Wakefield

0:13:59 > 0:14:05try of the evening.

0:14:05 > 0:14:07Now it's Wood, Wood to Finn.

0:14:07 > 0:14:08Fast hands from Miller.

0:14:08 > 0:14:11Out towards Johnstone.

0:14:11 > 0:14:13And Johnstone has his second.

0:14:13 > 0:14:16It had been a first-half to forget for the expectant home crowd

0:14:16 > 0:14:20as Rovers remained scoreless for the first 40 minutes.

0:14:20 > 0:14:24Back up to 13 they did work their way into some decent positions.

0:14:24 > 0:14:25But rarely troubled the Wakefield line.

0:14:25 > 0:14:29Finally after 18 minutes of the second half, Rovers

0:14:29 > 0:14:31were up and running.

0:14:31 > 0:14:32Here is Maguire, up to the Wakefield line.

0:14:32 > 0:14:34Marsh.

0:14:34 > 0:14:37A chance maybe for Salter, too.

0:14:37 > 0:14:40Asserts his influence on the game, first carry of his evening.

0:14:40 > 0:14:42Now Maguire with it.

0:14:42 > 0:14:43Cuts out past, great stuff.

0:14:43 > 0:14:45Clarkson scores.

0:14:45 > 0:14:49Hull Kingston Rovers' first try.

0:14:49 > 0:14:52But the relief was short lived and when Johnstone

0:14:52 > 0:14:56completed his hat-trick on 60 minutes it continued,

0:14:56 > 0:14:59a night to remember for Wakefield and the winger who had been out

0:14:59 > 0:15:01for nine months with a knee injury.

0:15:01 > 0:15:03Now Hampshire finds Finn.

0:15:03 > 0:15:05Finn along the line to Miller.

0:15:05 > 0:15:08Out to Johnstone who is on a hat-trick.

0:15:08 > 0:15:11And if he has finished that it is already a contender

0:15:11 > 0:15:12for finish of the season.

0:15:12 > 0:15:17And my goodness me, he has.

0:15:18 > 0:15:20Finn finds Ashurst.

0:15:20 > 0:15:25Ashurst is eventually stopped by Maguire, Quinlan and Salter too.

0:15:25 > 0:15:27Hampshire.

0:15:27 > 0:15:28Three metres out.

0:15:28 > 0:15:29Worrying signs.

0:15:29 > 0:15:30Hampshire from dummy half.

0:15:30 > 0:15:32And he is over.

0:15:32 > 0:15:35Hampshire crashes over.

0:15:35 > 0:15:41And the Wakefield players celebrate in front of their supporters.

0:15:44 > 0:15:47There's not many teams who will come here and get a result.

0:15:47 > 0:15:51We weren't pretty, but the main thing was to get a result.

0:15:51 > 0:15:54And you know, we have been real slow starters these last couple of years.

0:15:54 > 0:15:57Certainly last year as well when I was in charge,

0:15:57 > 0:15:59we didn't win the first two.

0:15:59 > 0:16:02But it's always nice to get the season off to a flyer.

0:16:02 > 0:16:05We talk about getting beat or losing a game, we lost the game

0:16:05 > 0:16:07but we didn't get beat.

0:16:07 > 0:16:09By that I mean, no one gave up.

0:16:09 > 0:16:13We were a new team at the start of last year and we've formed

0:16:13 > 0:16:16together and we're starting to get a real roll on with each other

0:16:16 > 0:16:18and we've added some new people like Justin Horo,

0:16:19 > 0:16:20Pauli Pauli, Ryan Hampshire.

0:16:20 > 0:16:22And they've all slotted in to the team perfectly.

0:16:22 > 0:16:25And they're real big guys and they are doing a lot of damage.

0:16:25 > 0:16:28And it's helping us a lot on the field.

0:16:28 > 0:16:31So it just feels like it's a special team and we're looking forward

0:16:31 > 0:16:32to doing something good this year.

0:16:32 > 0:16:34Danny, tough on the scoreline but quite interesting

0:16:34 > 0:16:37from Tim Sheens there saying we didn't get beat, in terms

0:16:37 > 0:16:38of didn't get beat up out there.

0:16:38 > 0:16:40Yeah, I don't think anybody could question the attitude

0:16:41 > 0:16:46or the desire from the players.

0:16:46 > 0:16:47I think we worked hard for each other.

0:16:47 > 0:16:50We just coughed up a bit too much ball and missed one-on-one

0:16:50 > 0:16:52tackles and you know, Wakefield are very good team.

0:16:52 > 0:16:54And they punished the mistakes.

0:16:54 > 0:16:56And obviously with the tries on the clip as you saw,

0:16:56 > 0:16:57executed really well.

0:16:57 > 0:16:59And some great finishes by Tom Johnstone.

0:16:59 > 0:17:01But we are disappointed, obviously wanted to get

0:17:01 > 0:17:03off to a winning start.

0:17:03 > 0:17:06But you know, some good things to come out of the game.

0:17:06 > 0:17:08A lot for us to work on.

0:17:08 > 0:17:11Is it something that actually possibly you needed that opening

0:17:11 > 0:17:15game as well for some of the players who don't have as much Super League

0:17:15 > 0:17:17experience to realise what the step up is?

0:17:17 > 0:17:20And also quite a few of you are new as well.

0:17:20 > 0:17:22Yes, I think we are still gelling together as a team.

0:17:22 > 0:17:25We obviously have some new players, myself, Tommy Lee, Shaun Wood has

0:17:25 > 0:17:27missed a lot of preseason with a shoulder reconstruction.

0:17:27 > 0:17:30So I think we will improve as the games come on.

0:17:30 > 0:17:34But in Super League you haven't got a lot of time to find your feet.

0:17:34 > 0:17:36We need to start picking up some points and yeah,

0:17:36 > 0:17:38we were disappointed with the performance but obviously

0:17:38 > 0:17:39looking to improve this week.

0:17:39 > 0:17:42And what about the atmosphere, to have Hull KR back in Super League?

0:17:42 > 0:17:43Yeah, it was great.

0:17:43 > 0:17:46It was obviously the first game there for me and it

0:17:46 > 0:17:47was a great atmosphere.

0:17:47 > 0:17:49Obviously everybody knows that Rovers are a Super League club.

0:17:49 > 0:17:52And I think the competition missed Rovers last year.

0:17:52 > 0:17:54And hopefully we can put a better performance on next

0:17:54 > 0:17:55time we are at home.

0:17:55 > 0:17:57Obviously you're not at Wakefield any more,

0:17:57 > 0:17:58moved over to the Bradford Bulls.

0:17:58 > 0:18:01But young Tom Johnstone, I know he is a start you have talked

0:18:01 > 0:18:03about for a long time.

0:18:03 > 0:18:05He has had his injury problems, but boy what a talent.

0:18:05 > 0:18:07He is an outstanding wing man, he really is.

0:18:07 > 0:18:11He is going to be an England player, there's no doubt in mind whatsoever.

0:18:11 > 0:18:15He has put the hard yards in with his rehab.

0:18:15 > 0:18:16Recovering from a knee reconstruction.

0:18:16 > 0:18:19And I think you can see from his athleticism and his ability

0:18:19 > 0:18:25to finish from virtually nothing, that he really is very exciting.

0:18:25 > 0:18:29But he does not only do that, he's also very good bringing the ball out

0:18:29 > 0:18:30from his own end as well.

0:18:30 > 0:18:32Because he is very, very strong indeed.

0:18:32 > 0:18:34And there is an England winger in the waiting.

0:18:34 > 0:18:36What do you think Wakefield can do this year?

0:18:36 > 0:18:39They will get in the top four, I'm pretty certain of that.

0:18:39 > 0:18:42Because you can sense there is a confidence around the players.

0:18:42 > 0:18:44They were a good team last year.

0:18:44 > 0:18:47They will be even better at this year because they have

0:18:47 > 0:18:51got that experience, they have recruited

0:18:51 > 0:18:52and they have got their 0ne-six-seven-nine sorted out.

0:18:52 > 0:18:55So they will ask questions of anybody they play against.

0:18:55 > 0:18:58Next up for Rovers it's a trip to Elland Road,

0:18:58 > 0:19:05to take on the Champions.

0:19:15 > 0:19:18It's only two months since the World Cup when England

0:19:18 > 0:19:20made it all the way to the Final.

0:19:20 > 0:19:22Their player of the tournament was Jermaine McGillvary,

0:19:22 > 0:19:28who's now back home with the Huddersfield Giants.

0:19:28 > 0:19:31I'm a pretty normal person.

0:19:31 > 0:19:34Just make my family proud, that's my main aim playing rugby.

0:19:34 > 0:19:36For people to say that I've inspired them is crazy.

0:19:36 > 0:19:38McGillvary!

0:19:38 > 0:19:41The opening try of this World Cup!

0:19:41 > 0:19:43I just wanted to be a Super League player, you know.

0:19:43 > 0:19:46Just try to make a living from Super League and you know,

0:19:46 > 0:19:50to be playing on the world's biggest stage and you know, kids buying my

0:19:50 > 0:19:51tops and saying I've inspired them.

0:19:51 > 0:19:54I got loads of messages when I came back.

0:19:54 > 0:19:57It's a really special thing, I'm a guy, I like to

0:19:57 > 0:19:58keep myself to myself.

0:19:58 > 0:20:00You wouldn't even recognise me on the street,

0:20:00 > 0:20:01I'm just a normal guy.

0:20:01 > 0:20:03I'll have my hoody and my tracksuit on.

0:20:03 > 0:20:07You would probably look at me and be scared more than anything!

0:20:07 > 0:20:10I'm just a normal guy and the main reason I play rugby and do things

0:20:10 > 0:20:12other than that is for my family.

0:20:12 > 0:20:14They were really proud of me, especially my

0:20:14 > 0:20:15sons as well, you know.

0:20:15 > 0:20:18Sending me good luck messages and watching all the games

0:20:18 > 0:20:20and stuff like that.

0:20:20 > 0:20:21And all their friends talking about it.

0:20:21 > 0:20:24You know, to see them with a smile on their face

0:20:24 > 0:20:26and be proud of their dad, be proud of what I'm doing

0:20:26 > 0:20:28and what I've achieved, is amazing.

0:20:28 > 0:20:32Dad, good luck for tomorrow.

0:20:32 > 0:20:33We love you.

0:20:33 > 0:20:36Come on, England!

0:20:36 > 0:20:38Come on, England!

0:20:38 > 0:20:39McGillvary comes back in on the inside.

0:20:39 > 0:20:44Jermaine McGillvary scores again.

0:20:44 > 0:20:46He is literally unstoppable.

0:20:46 > 0:20:49Because he's got these.

0:20:49 > 0:20:52Muscles.

0:20:52 > 0:20:53And it goes to Jermaine McGillvary!

0:20:53 > 0:20:58Nine tries in nine successive Test matches in an England shirt.

0:20:58 > 0:21:00I loved every minute of Australia and I think the group

0:21:00 > 0:21:03of people I was with, the players and the staff, just made

0:21:03 > 0:21:05it even more special for me.

0:21:05 > 0:21:07Not just on the field, the rugby stuff, just

0:21:07 > 0:21:08visiting like different cultures, different people.

0:21:08 > 0:21:10You know and the surrounding areas.

0:21:10 > 0:21:11A life experience.

0:21:11 > 0:21:13It was amazing.

0:21:13 > 0:21:17As soon as I came back I was hiding away, I waited a week and then

0:21:17 > 0:21:20I went away on holiday just to get my mind off for a bit.

0:21:20 > 0:21:23I hadn't even reflected on the final, I haven't watched it back.

0:21:23 > 0:21:27I'd seen it a come on a couple of times on the highlights but it's

0:21:27 > 0:21:29not one I want to watch back.

0:21:29 > 0:21:30What about this ankle tap from Dougan?

0:21:30 > 0:21:31He was gone, Kallum Watkins.

0:21:31 > 0:21:35Oh, don't do it to us!

0:21:35 > 0:21:38There was a lot of talk that you would be moving to the NRL.

0:21:38 > 0:21:41Has anybody approached you, or was it never going to be a thing?

0:21:41 > 0:21:44That's it, no one's approached me.

0:21:44 > 0:21:47I think a lot of it was more media speculation.

0:21:47 > 0:21:51But no one has directly approached me so all I can do

0:21:51 > 0:21:55is focus on doing my job for England and for the Huddersfield Giants.

0:21:55 > 0:21:59I know I have to give back now, especially

0:21:59 > 0:22:01to the younger lads in the team.

0:22:01 > 0:22:03I've always kept quiet and just done my job,

0:22:03 > 0:22:04let my performance do the talking.

0:22:04 > 0:22:08But I know I have to give back now especially to the younger lads

0:22:08 > 0:22:10in the team, you know, hopefully it rubs off.

0:22:10 > 0:22:13When you give him that much space, he's not going to waste it, is he?

0:22:13 > 0:22:14Jermaine McGillvary.

0:22:14 > 0:22:17Back to reality now.

0:22:17 > 0:22:20This cold weather on the pitches, you know, slippy balls again.

0:22:20 > 0:22:23So you know, I just have to get on with the job.

0:22:23 > 0:22:26Well John, he topped the stats for clean breaks, metres made,

0:22:26 > 0:22:28tackle busts and hand carries.

0:22:28 > 0:22:31He scored seven tries in seven games.

0:22:31 > 0:22:33What has it been with him at international level,

0:22:33 > 0:22:34he seems to have really stepped up?

0:22:34 > 0:22:37He has, yeah.

0:22:37 > 0:22:39I mean it is another level up from Super League.

0:22:39 > 0:22:42But he just took to it like a duck to water.

0:22:42 > 0:22:45And it was absolutely sensational.

0:22:45 > 0:22:49I think he is very underrated in Super League as well.

0:22:49 > 0:22:53And you see here, a wingman's job isn't simply now scoring tries.

0:22:53 > 0:22:56It's getting the sets going early on when you're bringing it out

0:22:56 > 0:22:58from yardage at your own end.

0:22:58 > 0:23:01And he does this really well, whether it's against the French team

0:23:01 > 0:23:03where he made a break there.

0:23:03 > 0:23:06Or against the Australians who we were really struggling with.

0:23:06 > 0:23:08And you see here once again his power really takes him

0:23:08 > 0:23:10through that tackle.

0:23:10 > 0:23:12And he really is a handful, as you mentioned, with these carries

0:23:12 > 0:23:15and against so many yards.

0:23:15 > 0:23:18He is a massive, massive asset to his team and his team-mates

0:23:18 > 0:23:21as Kallum Watkins benefits there from him.

0:23:21 > 0:23:24And it's the physique of him as well, isn't it.

0:23:24 > 0:23:26You can see him finishing off the tries, but he's built

0:23:26 > 0:23:27like a prop, almost.

0:23:27 > 0:23:29He is, he's a huge man, he really is.

0:23:29 > 0:23:31But he's also very, very quick.

0:23:31 > 0:23:33And he is very evasive as well.

0:23:33 > 0:23:34We have seen in power through tackles.

0:23:34 > 0:23:36But he's also good on his feet as well.

0:23:36 > 0:23:40So as an all-round package, he ain't a bad wingman!

0:23:40 > 0:23:42Are you surprised to still see him in Super League?

0:23:42 > 0:23:43Partly, yes.

0:23:43 > 0:23:45Partly, because I thought they would have been gathering

0:23:45 > 0:23:48round him and trying to pick him off there.

0:23:48 > 0:23:51But it is obviously a big bonus for us that he has

0:23:51 > 0:23:52remained in Super League.

0:23:52 > 0:23:54But the biggest bonuses obviously for the Huddersfield Giants.

0:23:54 > 0:23:55It is indeed.

0:23:55 > 0:23:58Well Jermaine was still nursing an injury he picked up

0:23:58 > 0:24:00at the World Cup so sat out the Giants trip to

0:24:00 > 0:24:01Hull FC on Thursday.

0:24:01 > 0:24:03Dave Edwards has the details.

0:24:03 > 0:24:09The home side took an early lead in their opening

0:24:09 > 0:24:11home Super League clash, Marc Sneyd scoring two

0:24:11 > 0:24:12penalties in nine minutes.

0:24:12 > 0:24:15But it wasn't long before the visitors responded,

0:24:15 > 0:24:19first through Ryan Hinchcliffe on the quarter hour mark,

0:24:19 > 0:24:23then the Giants were on the hunt for a second just three minutes later.

0:24:23 > 0:24:27A neat little kick from Adam O'Brien was picked up

0:24:27 > 0:24:30unchallenged by Ukuma Ta'ai.

0:24:30 > 0:24:34Roth's conversion giving Huddersfield an 8-point advantage.

0:24:34 > 0:24:36Hull hit back only minutes before half-time, Albert Kelly

0:24:36 > 0:24:39making his presence known by powering through the defensive

0:24:39 > 0:24:41line and giving his team a lifeline.

0:24:41 > 0:24:44The Black and Whites were quick out of the blocks in the second half.

0:24:44 > 0:24:48A huge 40-20 from Sneyd set the grand work.

0:24:48 > 0:24:51And Fetuli Talanoa with brute strength, dived in at the corner.

0:24:51 > 0:24:55From then it began to feel like one-way traffic.

0:24:55 > 0:24:57Sneyd's boot was instrumental again as a perfectly weighted chip

0:24:57 > 0:25:02was scooped up into the waiting arms of Talanoa to get a second

0:25:02 > 0:25:03try in four minutes.

0:25:03 > 0:25:05Hull looking for their fifth opening round victory in a row.

0:25:05 > 0:25:08And as the hour mark approached it didn't seem in doubt.

0:25:08 > 0:25:12Jake Connor putting daylight between the two sides.

0:25:12 > 0:25:15With Huddersfield struggling to stem the tide and some slick passing

0:25:15 > 0:25:17from Lee Bradford's men, Talanoa was able to secure

0:25:17 > 0:25:21a hat-trick in style.

0:25:21 > 0:25:23-- Lee Radford.

0:25:23 > 0:25:26The final wound inflicted on the visitors came after 63 minutes.

0:25:26 > 0:25:29A hit and hope was lost and dropped by the returning Jake Mamo.

0:25:29 > 0:25:31And Jamie Shaul rounded off an impressive second-half

0:25:31 > 0:25:35performance and convincing home win.

0:25:35 > 0:25:39Lee Radford saying not perfect, but he was pretty happy

0:25:39 > 0:25:41with that as a start.

0:25:41 > 0:25:44Do you see this Hull FC as the club that are really building,

0:25:44 > 0:25:46having won the Challenge Cup last two seasons, building to possibly

0:25:46 > 0:25:48being in the Grand Final?

0:25:48 > 0:25:52I do, I think they have a very strong squad this year.

0:25:52 > 0:25:55They have been there or thereabouts for the last two or three years now

0:25:55 > 0:25:59obviously within the Challenge Cup.

0:25:59 > 0:26:02I think being over the other side of Hull, there's a lot of talk

0:26:02 > 0:26:05about them obviously wanting to win the Grand Final this year.

0:26:05 > 0:26:08And I definitely feel they have got the squad capable of doing that.

0:26:08 > 0:26:11You don't have to be a perfect Round 1, but obviously

0:26:11 > 0:26:12they have got the win.

0:26:12 > 0:26:14Obviously they will be really pleased with that.

0:26:14 > 0:26:16And Lee Radford was talking in preseason about needing

0:26:16 > 0:26:18a bit more consistency.

0:26:18 > 0:26:21They went in patches last season, just maybe

0:26:21 > 0:26:23being a bit more consistent?

0:26:23 > 0:26:25Yes, I think there is that element to it.

0:26:25 > 0:26:29But I also think they did take strides forward last year.

0:26:29 > 0:26:32Because when they won the Challenge Cup in the first year,

0:26:32 > 0:26:33they completely fell away.

0:26:33 > 0:26:35Whereas last year I felt they remained competitive

0:26:35 > 0:26:38for the rest of the season.

0:26:38 > 0:26:40So I am certain they will be in the latter stages

0:26:40 > 0:26:42of the Challenge Cup and in the latter stages

0:26:42 > 0:26:44of the Super League as well.

0:26:44 > 0:26:46And they could be challenging for both.

0:26:46 > 0:26:48And for Huddersfield, they had a really poor start to last

0:26:48 > 0:26:50season which really put them on the back foot.

0:26:50 > 0:26:52They did come through and make the eights.

0:26:52 > 0:26:55But they will want to get on the winning road again soon

0:26:55 > 0:26:57because that will be in their minds.

0:26:57 > 0:26:59Very much so.

0:26:59 > 0:27:01Obviously Rankin in the halfs and Mamo at full-back.

0:27:01 > 0:27:05They need to gel together.

0:27:05 > 0:27:08Because them playing together, it is new to them at the minute.

0:27:08 > 0:27:11So they might well be a little clunky are not quite

0:27:11 > 0:27:13there as efficiently as they will want to be.

0:27:13 > 0:27:16But they will realise the urgency to get some points posted

0:27:16 > 0:27:17on the Super League ladder.

0:27:17 > 0:27:21Clunky as a word of the first round really, isn't it!

0:27:21 > 0:27:24Hull and Wigan are travelling around the world for their next fixture,

0:27:24 > 0:27:27they meet in Australia on Saturday, but before that Wigan travelled

0:27:27 > 0:27:29around the corner for their opening match of the season.

0:27:29 > 0:27:32They were at Salford on Friday, and the commentator on this

0:27:32 > 0:27:35one is Matt Newsum.

0:27:35 > 0:27:37Salford in a good position here.

0:27:37 > 0:27:44Niall Evalds will go to the right of the ruck.

0:27:44 > 0:27:46O'Brian slides in the kick.

0:27:46 > 0:27:48Chris Wellen gets there first and he'll take it round to behind

0:27:48 > 0:27:49the sticks to score.

0:27:49 > 0:27:50Thomas Leuluai.

0:27:50 > 0:27:52Williams.

0:27:52 > 0:27:54They've got so many options out on this right edge.

0:27:54 > 0:27:55Powell to Tomkins.

0:27:55 > 0:27:56Through the hands it goes.

0:27:56 > 0:27:58Away to the corner for Tom Davies!

0:27:58 > 0:28:00Fine try, Wigan.

0:28:00 > 0:28:02Leuluai back to the ten.

0:28:02 > 0:28:03Williams with the kick.

0:28:03 > 0:28:04Delicately poised.

0:28:04 > 0:28:06Sent in and chased.

0:28:06 > 0:28:07And it has been put down.

0:28:07 > 0:28:10Oliver Gildart.

0:28:10 > 0:28:11Quick tap from Wigan.

0:28:11 > 0:28:16Keen to get on with this.

0:28:16 > 0:28:19Tompkins lifted out of the horizontal there by George Griffin.

0:28:19 > 0:28:21A shove in the back from Sam Tomkins.

0:28:21 > 0:28:24Tempers flaring.

0:28:24 > 0:28:31Robert Hicks has no option but to send George Griffin for ten.

0:28:31 > 0:28:32Tautai.

0:28:32 > 0:28:34Out the back it goes to Williams.

0:28:34 > 0:28:36Coming away to this left-hand side.

0:28:36 > 0:28:37Oliver Gildart gets it way.

0:28:37 > 0:28:38To Marshall.

0:28:38 > 0:28:40He has got space in front of him.

0:28:40 > 0:28:42He will send a little kick through.

0:28:42 > 0:28:43The chase is on.

0:28:43 > 0:28:47Morgan Escare will pluck it out of the air and touch it down.

0:28:47 > 0:28:49Wonderful try.

0:28:49 > 0:28:50Sam Tomkins.

0:28:50 > 0:28:52To Powell.

0:28:52 > 0:28:54William stepping at the line.

0:28:54 > 0:28:56So many options for Wigan.

0:28:56 > 0:28:58It is a loose off-load.

0:28:58 > 0:28:59Back to Sam Tomkins.

0:28:59 > 0:29:01Who will slide the kick in himself.

0:29:01 > 0:29:02Gildart is there.

0:29:02 > 0:29:03Marshall is there!

0:29:03 > 0:29:07And the winger is on the board.

0:29:07 > 0:29:11Wigan have looked really slick.

0:29:11 > 0:29:14It goes away to this left-hand side with George Williams who sends

0:29:14 > 0:29:15a little kick up into the air.

0:29:15 > 0:29:16Chase is on.

0:29:16 > 0:29:18It is Marshall, lovely footwork.

0:29:18 > 0:29:20And Niall Evalds had to get there and didn't.

0:29:20 > 0:29:22It will be Liam Marshall who gets his second.

0:29:22 > 0:29:26Wonderful footwork.

0:29:26 > 0:29:27Thomas Leuluai.

0:29:27 > 0:29:28Williams.

0:29:28 > 0:29:29Glorious wrap around.

0:29:29 > 0:29:31Then he gets it away to Marshall.

0:29:31 > 0:29:32Now he has got space.

0:29:32 > 0:29:36He's got Gildart inside him and Gildart will scoot to the line.

0:29:36 > 0:29:44Wigan on top.

0:29:44 > 0:29:46Leuluai pushes off a tackle from Kopchak.

0:29:46 > 0:29:49Now it is Tony Clubb's turn to open up and score.

0:29:49 > 0:29:51Too strong.

0:29:51 > 0:29:55Have Salford got a late response in them?

0:29:55 > 0:29:59O'Brian works it away, to the corner for Evalds.

0:29:59 > 0:30:06A fine opening night for Wigan.

0:30:06 > 0:30:08Shaun Wane was talking in preseason about having different options now,

0:30:08 > 0:30:12more attacking options, more attacking flair.

0:30:12 > 0:30:15What to make of Escare coming on part way through the game,

0:30:15 > 0:30:17coming into full-back with Sam Tomkins moving up?

0:30:17 > 0:30:19I think Wigan seem highly motivated team after obviously

0:30:19 > 0:30:21a disappointing season last year.

0:30:21 > 0:30:24But they've got some fantastic flair players in that team.

0:30:24 > 0:30:27I think it could be the making of Sam, to be honest with you.

0:30:27 > 0:30:30I know he started out as a half-back in the academy.

0:30:30 > 0:30:33And when he got into the first team, similar to Darren Locke,

0:30:33 > 0:30:40he went from full-back up into the house.

0:30:40 > 0:30:41-- halfs.

0:30:41 > 0:30:42And obviously everybody knows about Escare.

0:30:42 > 0:30:45You know, a few fantastic seasons with the Catalans.

0:30:45 > 0:30:47A really dangerous player when he has the ball in hand.

0:30:47 > 0:30:48Speed to burn.

0:30:48 > 0:30:51You know, it can be a real key combination for Wigan this year.

0:30:51 > 0:30:53They look very different already on week one?

0:30:53 > 0:30:54They did, yes.

0:30:54 > 0:30:55Very much so.

0:30:55 > 0:30:58I thought the shapes that they were playing were in stark

0:30:58 > 0:30:59contrast to last year.

0:30:59 > 0:31:02They were a little predictable last year with the ball in hand.

0:31:02 > 0:31:05But they have certainly mixed and matched it.

0:31:05 > 0:31:09And they have got some quality once they get it out to the wings

0:31:09 > 0:31:11in both Marshall and Davis who are out there.

0:31:11 > 0:31:13And we have talked about Sam Tomkins at full-back.

0:31:13 > 0:31:14And Escare.

0:31:14 > 0:31:16So yes, they will pose some problems.

0:31:16 > 0:31:18A tough opening match for Salford, wasn't it, with a Wigan

0:31:18 > 0:31:20that was clearly very intent.

0:31:20 > 0:31:22Yes, I think obviously Shaun Wane has been into it

0:31:22 > 0:31:25all preseason you know, by reading some of the things,

0:31:25 > 0:31:26they have had a tough preseason.

0:31:26 > 0:31:28So you know, Wigan, they are a fantastic side.

0:31:28 > 0:31:36They are littered with great players.

0:31:36 > 0:31:38So I think they were missing Sean O'Loughlin that night

0:31:38 > 0:31:41who was the leader and you know, the big motivator for the team.

0:31:41 > 0:31:43So a great start from Wigan.

0:31:43 > 0:31:46No team has changed as much over the winter as Warrington Wolves.

0:31:46 > 0:31:48They're looking to avoid the Qualifiers this year,

0:31:48 > 0:31:50and started the season at home to the Champions Leeds.

0:31:50 > 0:31:53Warrington have five new players, and a new coach in Steve Price.

0:31:53 > 0:32:03Here he is with all the comings and goings at The Wire.

0:32:03 > 0:32:04He's a quality football player.

0:32:04 > 0:32:06He understands the game really well.

0:32:06 > 0:32:09I'd like to think that he can adjust to all different type of conditions.

0:32:09 > 0:32:11Especially over in the English Super League, it can

0:32:11 > 0:32:12throw up a few variables.

0:32:12 > 0:32:22He is a naturally instinctive football player.

0:32:22 > 0:32:26Sit is from a Tongan background.

0:32:26 > 0:32:27He is a really enjoyable, likeable player.

0:32:27 > 0:32:30All the players have really gravitated to him in

0:32:30 > 0:32:31a short amount of time.

0:32:31 > 0:32:34He is a player that puts himself before other people and you know,

0:32:34 > 0:32:42he loves playing football tough.

0:32:42 > 0:32:45I had a little bit to do with Bryson through his younger years.

0:32:45 > 0:32:46Back in New Zealand.

0:32:46 > 0:32:49He is a player I would certainly like to coach.

0:32:49 > 0:32:51He competes hard and he's a goalkicker.

0:32:51 > 0:32:52Likes to play aggressive.

0:32:52 > 0:32:55He is attacking, an ex-Kiwi international and I thought

0:32:55 > 0:32:57he was one of the top three performers in the Rabbitoes

0:32:57 > 0:33:05especially last year.

0:33:05 > 0:33:07I know what I'm going to get from Mitch.

0:33:07 > 0:33:09He can play on the wing, he can play centre.

0:33:09 > 0:33:12Play at a pinch at full-back.

0:33:12 > 0:33:15And as an outside back it's important that you got the ability

0:33:15 > 0:33:18to be able to adjust and play different positions and Mitch

0:33:18 > 0:33:27certainly fits that criteria.

0:33:27 > 0:33:30Yeah, he's a damaging big lad, isn't he?

0:33:30 > 0:33:32He can certainly break a tackle.

0:33:32 > 0:33:36I'm amazed on his leg speed and how fast he can get across the ground

0:33:36 > 0:33:37for such a big body.

0:33:37 > 0:33:40I'm really looking forward to working with Ben because he's

0:33:40 > 0:33:47certainly a quality football player.

0:33:47 > 0:33:50So the start of a new season and new aspirations as far as

0:33:50 > 0:33:51the Warrington Wolves are concerned.

0:33:51 > 0:33:55Looking to improve dramatically on what they produced last year

0:33:55 > 0:33:58with a clutch of new signings.

0:33:58 > 0:34:00Back in the hunt for silverware.

0:34:00 > 0:34:03They will hope that these are the champions.

0:34:03 > 0:34:06The Leeds side that won the Grand Final last year.

0:34:06 > 0:34:10One or two changes in their line-up, too.

0:34:10 > 0:34:19Steve Price the new Warrington coach looking down from his new home.

0:34:19 > 0:34:21Leeds are going wide here and Ryan Hall has an opportunity

0:34:21 > 0:34:25down the left-hand side.

0:34:25 > 0:34:29Quickly up there is Sutcliffe.

0:34:29 > 0:34:33A delicate dab kick by Moon.

0:34:33 > 0:34:37It is down with Jones-Buchanan!

0:34:37 > 0:34:38And Jamie Jones-Buchanan, superb, and hangs on to

0:34:39 > 0:34:42what he thinks is a try.

0:34:42 > 0:34:43We've got try.

0:34:43 > 0:34:45Check the grounding, please.

0:34:45 > 0:34:48Phil Bentham says try on the field.

0:34:48 > 0:34:49Is there a knock-on?

0:34:49 > 0:34:50No.

0:34:50 > 0:34:51Jones-Buchanan keeps a hold of it.

0:34:51 > 0:34:53And reaches over and scores.

0:34:53 > 0:34:56That looks good.

0:34:56 > 0:34:58And there is the confirmation.

0:34:58 > 0:35:01Leeds with an early score.

0:35:01 > 0:35:03Wonderful little flighted kick by Joel Moon.

0:35:03 > 0:35:07There were three Warrington players there.

0:35:07 > 0:35:09McDermott looking on.

0:35:09 > 0:35:11Here is Jamie Jones Buchanan again.

0:35:11 > 0:35:15Leeds continuing to press.

0:35:15 > 0:35:18Still to see the best of Warrington, you feel, so far tonight.

0:35:18 > 0:35:21It is Sutcliffe.

0:35:21 > 0:35:24Just managed to hold his line, otherwise I think there

0:35:24 > 0:35:26was an obstruction penalty to be given away there.

0:35:26 > 0:35:29But he managed to hold out.

0:35:29 > 0:35:34Jack Walker just ahead of him.

0:35:34 > 0:35:37Taken away by Parcell to that left-hand side again.

0:35:38 > 0:35:41Another leap from Ryan Hall!

0:35:41 > 0:35:43Well Warrington defenders stood and watched and Hall was the man

0:35:43 > 0:35:45who went prodigiously high and Leeds have their second

0:35:46 > 0:35:54with 18 minutes played.

0:35:54 > 0:35:59It curves left and this is looking better for Warrington at the moment.

0:35:59 > 0:36:02Back on the inside.

0:36:02 > 0:36:10Bryson Goodwin, on his debut, might have scored here.

0:36:10 > 0:36:12Again we are going for the video.

0:36:12 > 0:36:17The referee thinks it's a try and there is absolute proof.

0:36:17 > 0:36:19And Warrington have their opening score of the season

0:36:19 > 0:36:23and it's Bryson Goodwin who gets himself over.

0:36:23 > 0:36:25Puncturing the line here, cutting back against

0:36:25 > 0:36:32the grain of the defence.

0:36:32 > 0:36:34Richie Myler, enjoying himself no doubt.

0:36:34 > 0:36:37On his former home field.

0:36:37 > 0:36:41Ryan Hall, off he goes.

0:36:41 > 0:36:43Ryan Hall, look at the pace here!

0:36:43 > 0:36:46Hands off Ratchford and Ryan Hall, turning back the years

0:36:46 > 0:36:51with a fabulous eye-catching try.

0:36:51 > 0:36:54The power and the pace was phenomenal.

0:36:54 > 0:37:02His second of the night.

0:37:02 > 0:37:04There is still time here for Warrington,

0:37:04 > 0:37:07whether there is a will or not remains to be seen.

0:37:07 > 0:37:09A good bit of carrying here.

0:37:09 > 0:37:17Murdoch-Masila gets it away.

0:37:17 > 0:37:18Atkins for the line!

0:37:18 > 0:37:19Well, the defenders got there.

0:37:19 > 0:37:22He went very high but he couldn't find the landing strip here.

0:37:22 > 0:37:25Great defensive work, though, by Jack Walker, to go in his face.

0:37:25 > 0:37:31Frustration for the coach.

0:37:31 > 0:37:33Spun along.

0:37:33 > 0:37:34Atkins.

0:37:34 > 0:37:39Can't find a way through.

0:37:39 > 0:37:44Time ticking by.

0:37:44 > 0:37:46Warrington hoping surely for consolation and no more here.

0:37:46 > 0:37:47Up it goes, Walker underneath it.

0:37:47 > 0:37:49Oh, he has missed it!

0:37:49 > 0:37:50Walker has missed it.

0:37:50 > 0:37:54And it is going to be touch down by Tom Lineham.

0:37:54 > 0:37:56Well it is the first and only mistake that the young

0:37:56 > 0:38:02full-back has made tonight on an impressive performance.

0:38:02 > 0:38:04Into the final play.

0:38:04 > 0:38:09Can Warrington snatch a dramatic victory here?

0:38:09 > 0:38:12Daryl Clark stands and waits.

0:38:12 > 0:38:14The whole of the HJ stadium on their feet now.

0:38:14 > 0:38:17They try and plunge again through Westwood.

0:38:17 > 0:38:19He is going to be held up.

0:38:19 > 0:38:21And that is that.

0:38:21 > 0:38:22The hooter sounds.

0:38:22 > 0:38:25The whistle is blown.

0:38:25 > 0:38:27Warrington's final desperate efforts come to naught.

0:38:27 > 0:38:32It is a victory for Leeds.

0:38:32 > 0:38:35We saw young Jack Walker coming through to the back end of last

0:38:35 > 0:38:36season.

0:38:36 > 0:38:39He seems to have bulked up a little bit more, doesn't he.

0:38:39 > 0:38:41I mean, he is an impressive young talent at

0:38:41 > 0:38:42full-back.

0:38:42 > 0:38:43Yes, he is a great player.

0:38:43 > 0:38:45He's a mature player for such a young boy.

0:38:45 > 0:38:48He just knows where to put himself, he just has

0:38:48 > 0:38:50got that natural instinct that I suppose is in-built and some

0:38:51 > 0:38:52players.

0:38:52 > 0:38:54And I think defensively he was very sound of this game.

0:38:54 > 0:38:56But you know, very confident with a high

0:38:56 > 0:38:57ball.

0:38:57 > 0:39:07Nothing seems to faze him.

0:39:08 > 0:39:10And to hold up Ben Murdoch-Masila that takes some doing.

0:39:10 > 0:39:12That is a tremendous effort, it really is.

0:39:12 > 0:39:13He saved two tries there.

0:39:13 > 0:39:15That is as good as scoring them, is saving

0:39:16 > 0:39:17them.

0:39:17 > 0:39:20I think it is often forgotten in the modern game, where we look at

0:39:20 > 0:39:22full-backs as an extra pivo and an attacking threat.

0:39:22 > 0:39:25But the job of full-back as well is to defend the

0:39:25 > 0:39:26line.

0:39:26 > 0:39:27And this kid does it very indeed.

0:39:27 > 0:39:30So what did you make of your replacement, Richie Myler?

0:39:30 > 0:39:31I thought he played really well.

0:39:31 > 0:39:33I thought he had a really good, really strong

0:39:33 > 0:39:35debut.

0:39:35 > 0:39:37I think the combination between Ritchie and Moon I thought

0:39:37 > 0:39:39something that will be really good for the team.

0:39:39 > 0:39:41Ritchie likes to control the game, control the team.

0:39:41 > 0:39:44And I think it will free up Joel to be able

0:39:44 > 0:39:45to play off-the-cuff, which

0:39:45 > 0:39:46he is very good at.

0:39:46 > 0:39:48Did Warrington look that much different to you

0:39:48 > 0:39:49under Steve Price?

0:39:49 > 0:39:52No, I think they are still finding their way, to tell

0:39:52 > 0:39:53you the truth.

0:39:53 > 0:39:55A new coach and new players in pivotal positions.

0:39:55 > 0:39:57They will need three or four games before

0:39:57 > 0:39:58they start hitting their straps.

0:39:58 > 0:40:00But Leeds of the two teams, they look

0:40:00 > 0:40:01the more comfortable.

0:40:01 > 0:40:02I think that was understandable.

0:40:02 > 0:40:04Do you think they will be a very different

0:40:04 > 0:40:05Warrington under Steve Price?

0:40:05 > 0:40:07It is hard to say.

0:40:07 > 0:40:09I mean at this moment in time it was difficult to say.

0:40:09 > 0:40:11And also when the pitches start drying

0:40:11 > 0:40:16out as well, that is another factor.

0:40:16 > 0:40:20Because at the minute you have got to roll your sleeves up in the mud

0:40:20 > 0:40:21and the cold and wet.

0:40:21 > 0:40:24And you have to grind out a win as much as

0:40:24 > 0:40:25anything.

0:40:25 > 0:40:26And congratulations to the Warrington captain Chris Hill

0:40:26 > 0:40:30who left the field during that game when his wife went into labour.

0:40:30 > 0:40:33They made a quick dash to hospital in time for the arrival of Iris-Kay.

0:40:33 > 0:40:35Finally then to Widnes, where preparations for

0:40:35 > 0:40:37the new season have been under a cloud after the death

0:40:37 > 0:40:39of Kato Ottio.

0:40:39 > 0:40:41The Papua New Guinea international sadly passed away before

0:40:41 > 0:40:44arriving at the club.

0:40:44 > 0:40:46The Vikings' first match of the season was against

0:40:46 > 0:40:53Catalan Dragons, and Matt Newsum saw this one.

0:40:53 > 0:40:54Widnes inside the Catalan ten.

0:40:54 > 0:40:55Mellor skirts the line.

0:40:55 > 0:40:57Cleaned out by Sam Moa.

0:40:57 > 0:40:59And the ball is worked away to Hanbury.

0:40:59 > 0:41:01There is a bit of a scuffle between Chris Houston

0:41:01 > 0:41:03and Michael McIlorum.

0:41:03 > 0:41:07And Ben Thaler has sent Sam Moa to the bin for ten.

0:41:07 > 0:41:09Catalan have given away a string of penalties

0:41:09 > 0:41:11in this first half already.

0:41:11 > 0:41:13And now they're down to 12.

0:41:13 > 0:41:14Here comes Chris Dean.

0:41:14 > 0:41:19Raiding the line.

0:41:19 > 0:41:20Pushing away and scores.

0:41:20 > 0:41:21Catalan soft in defence.

0:41:21 > 0:41:23McIlorum.

0:41:23 > 0:41:25Gets one away to David Mead.

0:41:25 > 0:41:26And another pile of bodies.

0:41:26 > 0:41:30A debut try.

0:41:30 > 0:41:32Samisoni Langi.

0:41:32 > 0:41:33Hangs up the kick.

0:41:33 > 0:41:35The chase is on.

0:41:35 > 0:41:37It bounces off and there is Benjamin Jullien.

0:41:37 > 0:41:46On his debut.

0:41:46 > 0:41:48Away to the right-hand side.

0:41:48 > 0:41:50Chris Dean has shown he's got some skill and he has

0:41:50 > 0:41:51sliced his way through.

0:41:51 > 0:41:53He has got Mellor in support.

0:41:53 > 0:41:55And it is a scoot to the line.

0:41:55 > 0:41:56Lewis Tierney won't catch him.

0:41:56 > 0:41:58Widnes are flying.

0:41:58 > 0:42:01A really good game so far.

0:42:01 > 0:42:03Tom Gilmore pushes the kick into the in-goal area.

0:42:03 > 0:42:06There is Krisnan Inu who comes up with the try

0:42:06 > 0:42:09against his former club.

0:42:09 > 0:42:10Mellor.

0:42:10 > 0:42:12Lovely short ball.

0:42:12 > 0:42:17And Chris Dean will just coast through for his second.

0:42:20 > 0:42:22It has been a really strong second-half for Widnes.

0:42:22 > 0:42:24Gilmore away to the left edge.

0:42:24 > 0:42:27It is a great run, lovely off-load.

0:42:27 > 0:42:33And into the corner, Patrick Ah Van.

0:42:33 > 0:42:36They have really piled on the pressure.

0:42:36 > 0:42:37Long, high kick.

0:42:37 > 0:42:39Not dealt with at all.

0:42:39 > 0:42:41Rhys Hanbury has come up with it.

0:42:41 > 0:42:42The ball away to Houston.

0:42:42 > 0:42:45Keeping it alive here, Widnes.

0:42:45 > 0:42:48Over on that far side and it will be touch down in the corner.

0:42:48 > 0:42:54Charly Runciman.

0:42:54 > 0:42:59Catalan have been on the end of one-way traffic so far.

0:42:59 > 0:43:01The ball picked up by Krisnan Inu.

0:43:01 > 0:43:03He is going to race away, he is going to be

0:43:04 > 0:43:05caught by Lewis Tierney.

0:43:05 > 0:43:06What a lovely pass!

0:43:06 > 0:43:07Stefan Marsh for the corner.

0:43:07 > 0:43:11He will flick on the turbos, come back inside and

0:43:11 > 0:43:13score a wonderful try.

0:43:13 > 0:43:19That is 34 points unanswered and we were not expecting that.

0:43:19 > 0:43:20Denis Betts was not surprisingly absolutely

0:43:20 > 0:43:22delighted with that start.

0:43:22 > 0:43:24Well, he will be, yes.

0:43:24 > 0:43:26And they seem to have had a really good preseason.

0:43:26 > 0:43:29And they seem to be growing in their trial games

0:43:29 > 0:43:31and that was obviously a polished performance there.

0:43:31 > 0:43:34And the Catalans will have been very disappointed indeed.

0:43:34 > 0:43:37But you can only play what is in front of you and Widnes played that

0:43:37 > 0:43:38game very cleverly indeed.

0:43:38 > 0:43:42One of the things they have talked about is through the struggles

0:43:42 > 0:43:45that they had last year, a lot of the young players have come

0:43:45 > 0:43:48in and they have got a lot of game time and experience.

0:43:48 > 0:43:50And that will help them, you know that at Leeds,

0:43:50 > 0:43:52sometimes youngsters coming in difficult times and they really

0:43:53 > 0:43:54do grow through that.

0:43:54 > 0:43:55Yes, definitely.

0:43:55 > 0:43:56They have had some tough situations.

0:43:56 > 0:43:58But I think obviously a lot of people write off

0:43:58 > 0:44:00Widnes this year as well.

0:44:00 > 0:44:04I have seen some predictions and I think quite a lot of people

0:44:04 > 0:44:06are putting Widnes at the bottom of the table.

0:44:06 > 0:44:08They will definitely be using that as motivation.

0:44:08 > 0:44:10They have two very good young halfs in Mellor and Gilmour.

0:44:10 > 0:44:12Who controlled the game.

0:44:12 > 0:44:14And you know they will be out to prove a lot

0:44:15 > 0:44:16of people wrong this season.

0:44:16 > 0:44:20Catalan were not good, a penalty count of 15-4.

0:44:20 > 0:44:24But also tackling was appalling, Steve McNamara said.

0:44:24 > 0:44:27That might be a consequence of the penalty count as well.

0:44:27 > 0:44:29Because obviously if you are giving the opposition so much ball,

0:44:29 > 0:44:31ultimately fatigue sets in.

0:44:31 > 0:44:34And that is when you start dropping off tackles.

0:44:34 > 0:44:37And there were some poor one-on-one misses there.

0:44:37 > 0:44:40Chris Dean went through twice simply by evading a one-on-one tackle.

0:44:40 > 0:44:43And obviously Widnes were great, pouring through and finishing.

0:44:43 > 0:44:45But certainly worrying signs with the discipline

0:44:45 > 0:44:50and with the defensive display for the Catalans Dragons.

0:44:50 > 0:44:52And given the season they had last season,

0:44:52 > 0:44:55is it not as scary place to go as Catalans, it always

0:44:55 > 0:44:56seemed a really hard trip?

0:44:56 > 0:45:00Yes, it is a tough place to go and get the win, over in France.

0:45:00 > 0:45:03You know, they lost Richie Myler so there's a lot of pressure

0:45:03 > 0:45:06on Luke Walsh to steer the team around.

0:45:06 > 0:45:10Mickey McIlorum coming in so they're still working on their combinations.

0:45:10 > 0:45:12Obviously Steve McNamara a new coach as well.

0:45:12 > 0:45:14Probably still learning the way he wants to play.

0:45:14 > 0:45:18It is only weak one, isn't it.

0:45:18 > 0:45:21So Round One is in the history books, my thanks to Danny

0:45:21 > 0:45:23and to John for joining us.

0:45:23 > 0:45:25The Round Two highlights include Wigan against Hull in Australia.

0:45:25 > 0:45:27Join us for that next week.

0:45:27 > 0:45:30But until then, goodbye.
