0:01:03 > 0:01:06Hello, two worlds collide this week, Leeds have been down under

0:01:06 > 0:01:09to take on Melbourne, and closer to home we've had two

0:01:09 > 0:01:10more matches in Super League.

0:01:10 > 0:01:12Jamie Peacock and Richard Mathers are here to cast

0:01:12 > 0:01:13their eyes across it.

0:01:13 > 0:01:17We'll start with the Rhinos, and their quest to become

0:01:17 > 0:01:20World Club Champions for the fourth time.

0:01:50 > 0:01:52Cameron Smith and Kallum Watkins leading out these two

0:01:52 > 0:01:53sides onto AAMI Park.

0:01:53 > 0:01:55It's a special occasion and it will take a special

0:01:55 > 0:01:58effort by Leeds to win this world club crown down under.

0:01:58 > 0:02:01Not since Wigan in Brisbane in 1994 has that been achieved.

0:02:01 > 0:02:03But there's no doubting Leeds have plenty of support here.

0:02:03 > 0:02:05Here's Cuthbertson with a lovely little off-load as well

0:02:05 > 0:02:07to Singleton, who goes rampaging closer towards where

0:02:07 > 0:02:08they want to be.

0:02:08 > 0:02:09And they get a penalty, Leeds.

0:02:09 > 0:02:12Two referees doing them a favour on that occasion.

0:02:12 > 0:02:14And so with a tap, Cuthbertson just teasing them and then

0:02:14 > 0:02:15deciding to have a go.

0:02:15 > 0:02:17Bromwich the first to meet him.

0:02:17 > 0:02:18Parcell.

0:02:18 > 0:02:24Spun across the line.

0:02:24 > 0:02:26Sutcliffe's pulled down but closer and closer they're

0:02:26 > 0:02:29getting at the moment.

0:02:29 > 0:02:30Hall back again.

0:02:30 > 0:02:33They are really testing Melbourne in these early stages.

0:02:33 > 0:02:36It's Parcell, and he's got a dart!

0:02:36 > 0:02:40But they're sharp, that Melbourne defence.

0:02:40 > 0:02:43It's one of their most impressive areas, defending.

0:02:43 > 0:02:51But Leeds are piling on the pressure.

0:02:51 > 0:02:56Left to Hall, and Ryan Hall will score in the ninth minute!

0:02:56 > 0:02:59Well, huge celebration, and it is confirmed.

0:02:59 > 0:03:03That's a wonderful finish by Ryan Hall.

0:03:03 > 0:03:06And it's Leeds who have the early lead.

0:03:06 > 0:03:11Well, isn't this Ryan Hall all over.

0:03:11 > 0:03:15Slater.

0:03:15 > 0:03:18Smith with a pass that will have Kaufusi pushing in,

0:03:18 > 0:03:21and Finucane is put down.

0:03:21 > 0:03:24Penalty.

0:03:24 > 0:03:26Right in front of the sticks, you'd imagine they will roll

0:03:26 > 0:03:30it on here, Melbourne.

0:03:33 > 0:03:38Forward by Finucane.

0:03:38 > 0:03:40Leeds defending very nearly on their own line at the moment.

0:03:40 > 0:03:43Here's Cameron Smith.

0:03:43 > 0:03:46A short pass by Croft, and a reach over!

0:03:46 > 0:03:51Terrific stuff in the end by Jesse Bromwich.

0:03:51 > 0:03:55Just carrying all the power and the determination.

0:03:55 > 0:04:00And a young fella who fills the boots of Croft

0:04:00 > 0:04:02with a no-look pass.

0:04:02 > 0:04:05And Jesse Bromwich, who had a World Cup off, of course.

0:04:05 > 0:04:08Smith.

0:04:08 > 0:04:13Kaufusi.

0:04:13 > 0:04:15Jones-Buchanan round the hips.

0:04:15 > 0:04:17Parcell needs a second effort here from Jones-Buchanan

0:04:17 > 0:04:19to stop the carry.

0:04:19 > 0:04:20They have taken him back.

0:04:20 > 0:04:26Ten yards, he gained.

0:04:26 > 0:04:33Slamming efforts down the middle.

0:04:33 > 0:04:35Player of the Year, Cameron Smith, how many times

0:04:35 > 0:04:39has he won that award.

0:04:39 > 0:04:41Five gone, here comes the last.

0:04:41 > 0:04:44Quick pick-up here from Billy Slater, running up.

0:04:44 > 0:04:45It is the last tackle.

0:04:45 > 0:04:49He keeps it alive for Cameron Smith, whose kick is to the in-goal area.

0:04:49 > 0:04:51And Ryan Hall is forced to concede the drop-out

0:04:51 > 0:04:59underneath his own sticks.

0:04:59 > 0:05:00Some typical Cameron Smith play there.

0:05:00 > 0:05:07It's a decent crowd inside AAMI Park as well.

0:05:07 > 0:05:08Cuthbertson will need some treatment.

0:05:08 > 0:05:18The drop out reaches the halfway line.

0:05:18 > 0:05:21And back come Melbourne with a little bit of vim and vigour.

0:05:21 > 0:05:23The ball drops over the top for Curtis Scott.

0:05:23 > 0:05:25The Leeds defence wins that one superbly.

0:05:25 > 0:05:28Forcing the Melbourne player out, and they will get their head

0:05:28 > 0:05:31and feet at the scrum, and that's a terrific effort right

0:05:31 > 0:05:36from the drop out.

0:05:39 > 0:05:42Finucane again trying to play a path down the middle

0:05:42 > 0:05:44of those Leeds defenders.

0:05:44 > 0:05:48Cameron Smith.

0:05:48 > 0:05:51Croft is going for the line and I think he's very nearly there.

0:05:51 > 0:05:54He might be there!

0:05:54 > 0:06:04The referee asking the question.

0:06:04 > 0:06:05I have a try.

0:06:05 > 0:06:06He says try.

0:06:06 > 0:06:09We are reviewing if it's momentum that gets the ball to the line.

0:06:09 > 0:06:11Momentum or double movement is what they're looking for.

0:06:11 > 0:06:13Well it looked as though momentum had stopped,

0:06:13 > 0:06:15but maybe a Leeds hand there helped proceedings.

0:06:15 > 0:06:19And the try is given.

0:06:19 > 0:06:21And for the first time, with 23 minutes played,

0:06:21 > 0:06:31Melbourne have the lead.

0:06:31 > 0:06:32Brodie Croft, the youngster, the scorer.

0:06:32 > 0:06:34Myler shifts it away to Moon.

0:06:34 > 0:06:36There's Watkins.

0:06:36 > 0:06:40Dealt with sufficiently by Curtis Scott.

0:06:40 > 0:06:45Jones-Buchanan.

0:06:45 > 0:06:52A couple of tackles left to go in this set for Leeds.

0:06:52 > 0:06:55They wouldn't mind scoring next, with half an hour looming.

0:06:55 > 0:06:57They've certainly caused Melbourne a few problems in this first half.

0:06:57 > 0:07:02And they're keeping it alive here until the tackle of Munster.

0:07:02 > 0:07:06Parcell searches down the blindside, Watkins keeps it alive.

0:07:06 > 0:07:09Parcell with a drop of the hips.

0:07:09 > 0:07:12Myler laying it back to Delaney.

0:07:12 > 0:07:16Sized up and put down by Kaufusi.

0:07:16 > 0:07:21Here is Moon.

0:07:21 > 0:07:24It will bounce into the hands of Watkins, who puts a kick

0:07:24 > 0:07:27on there for Briscoe.

0:07:27 > 0:07:28On the chase.

0:07:28 > 0:07:37Addo-Carr is back there.

0:07:37 > 0:07:39Lovely delicate little kick, it's a superbly weighted one

0:07:39 > 0:07:41by Watkins Addo-Carr has to deal.

0:07:41 > 0:07:44So, Melbourne under a little bit of pressure here.

0:07:44 > 0:07:47Leeds forcing the repeat set.

0:07:47 > 0:07:50Oh, it's a miscommunication.

0:07:50 > 0:08:00Keinhorst and Hall look at each other in reproach.

0:08:01 > 0:08:02Someone should have done better there.

0:08:02 > 0:08:06Melbourne will get the ball back again.

0:08:06 > 0:08:09Slater.

0:08:09 > 0:08:11On his knees, wants to play it quickly.

0:08:11 > 0:08:12Five gone, here comes the sixth.

0:08:12 > 0:08:16Hoisted high in the air by Croft.

0:08:16 > 0:08:18It's a tester.

0:08:18 > 0:08:22Oh, it's just about kept a hold of by Sutcliffe.

0:08:22 > 0:08:24But the referee has given a penalty for a bit

0:08:25 > 0:08:28of shepherding of the ball here.

0:08:28 > 0:08:34We see Dwyer just leaving the line of his run to get the shoulder in.

0:08:38 > 0:08:40The most consistently brilliant performers down the years,

0:08:40 > 0:08:43Cameron Smith, and his goal-kicking is pretty neat as well.

0:08:43 > 0:08:51And he's given his side a two-score lead at 12-4.

0:08:51 > 0:08:54Smith.

0:08:54 > 0:09:00Played back by Kenny Bromwich, who's on the field, and Slater

0:09:00 > 0:09:01with the ball over the top.

0:09:01 > 0:09:05And Brandon Smith's involved here.

0:09:05 > 0:09:08One play to go.

0:09:08 > 0:09:10Right at the end of the half.

0:09:10 > 0:09:12It's back on the inside for Vunivalu with a step

0:09:12 > 0:09:15and a surge, and over he goes.

0:09:15 > 0:09:19A heartbreaker for Leeds at the end of this first half,

0:09:19 > 0:09:22but a touch of class for last year's joint top NRL

0:09:22 > 0:09:29try-scorer, Suliasi Vunivalu.

0:09:29 > 0:09:32He shows exactly why he's one of the most feared wingers

0:09:32 > 0:09:34on the planet with a wonderful finish that left Leeds

0:09:34 > 0:09:41grasping at thin air.

0:09:41 > 0:09:46Here's Welch.

0:09:46 > 0:09:53Leeds cannot afford to let Melbourne score again

0:09:53 > 0:09:55if they're going to keep a grasp on the potential

0:09:55 > 0:09:56of winning this game.

0:09:56 > 0:09:58Here is Scott, searches back on the inside.

0:09:58 > 0:10:00Finds Delaney.

0:10:00 > 0:10:05Three more help with the defending.

0:10:05 > 0:10:08Still three tackles to go, they're beautifully placed.

0:10:08 > 0:10:10Cameron Smith again.

0:10:10 > 0:10:12The legs went through the perpendicular, and Cameron Smith

0:10:12 > 0:10:19has landed an elbow on the back of Matt Parcell's head.

0:10:19 > 0:10:22Interesting to see how the referee interprets this.

0:10:22 > 0:10:23There's the penalty but then there's the retaliation.

0:10:23 > 0:10:30It's given Melbourne's way.

0:10:30 > 0:10:34Cameron Smith in sniping range again, and a big effort has taken

0:10:34 > 0:10:42the big fella Asofa-Solomona over the line, to claim another,

0:10:42 > 0:10:44and Leeds' dream is just becoming a little more distant now.

0:10:45 > 0:10:54Parcell.

0:10:55 > 0:10:59Jones-Buchanan getting involved here.

0:10:59 > 0:11:04Held up short.

0:11:04 > 0:11:06Sutcliffe is the man who is into dummy half.

0:11:07 > 0:11:08Moon again.

0:11:08 > 0:11:12Missing a couple of their strikes of course, but here comes a big

0:11:12 > 0:11:15effort from Brad Singleton.

0:11:15 > 0:11:18Walker and Ward both off but Leeds battling on again.

0:11:18 > 0:11:22Myler is absolutely crunched by Vunivalu.

0:11:22 > 0:11:28Not only can he score tries, he can make a tackle as well.

0:11:28 > 0:11:31That hurts!

0:11:31 > 0:11:38Inside passes there but tidied up by those

0:11:39 > 0:11:40couple of Leeds defenders.

0:11:40 > 0:11:41Out of dummy half goes Brandon Smith.

0:11:41 > 0:11:42The young pretender to Cameron.

0:11:42 > 0:11:44Here comes Cameron and Munster.

0:11:44 > 0:11:46There are only ten away and they are eyeing up

0:11:46 > 0:11:51the Leeds line again.

0:11:51 > 0:11:54The point of the game where things start to get exhausting for Leeds.

0:11:54 > 0:11:58Cameron Smith manages to keep it alive.

0:11:58 > 0:12:01Melbourne still have ambitions here.

0:12:01 > 0:12:03Croft's kick to the right-hand side.

0:12:03 > 0:12:05Vunivalu is underneath it.

0:12:05 > 0:12:07Myler gets a hand back and it's going to be

0:12:07 > 0:12:10Will Chambers who will finish.

0:12:10 > 0:12:16They went the aerial route.

0:12:16 > 0:12:23They might have come up with the try.

0:12:23 > 0:12:28I have a try, just confirm it goes back please.

0:12:28 > 0:12:32Just look looking to make sure it wasn't backwards here.

0:12:32 > 0:12:34The contact, whoever got the contact, it does go back

0:12:34 > 0:12:36Melbourne's way so Chambers will touch it down.

0:12:36 > 0:12:42This surely will be another try.

0:12:42 > 0:12:47And it is confirmed in Melbourne's favour.

0:12:47 > 0:12:49Only one winner now for absolutely certain.

0:12:49 > 0:12:56Vunivalu having a little dabble himself, but throws back

0:12:56 > 0:13:06to the middle and Melbourne trying to keep it alive here.

0:13:06 > 0:13:09They're getting close.

0:13:09 > 0:13:10Glasby will play it.

0:13:10 > 0:13:13Brandon Smith, brought back to the middle again!

0:13:13 > 0:13:16And has Finucane managed to barge his way over here

0:13:16 > 0:13:21and claim the score.

0:13:21 > 0:13:24Make sure Finucane does not lose possession of the ball in getting

0:13:24 > 0:13:27it to ground please.

0:13:27 > 0:13:30Well, it hits the ground there and it doesn't look as though

0:13:30 > 0:13:40he has lost possession.

0:13:41 > 0:13:44It's going to be the final crowning glory for the Melbourne Storm.

0:13:44 > 0:13:47They are the world champions, as that proclaims.

0:13:47 > 0:13:49Leeds very much second-best here against what is undoubtedly

0:13:49 > 0:13:54the best side in the world.

0:13:54 > 0:13:58Well, they won at a canter today, they won at a canter several times

0:13:58 > 0:14:00in the NRL last year, including the Grand Final.

0:14:00 > 0:14:04They are a champion side.

0:14:04 > 0:14:08Leeds have gone halfway round the world.

0:14:08 > 0:14:10Their task was improbable, it's proved impossible and it's

0:14:10 > 0:14:16Cameron Smith who lifts yet another trophy in his glittering career.

0:14:16 > 0:14:20It is Melbourne, the 2018 world club champions.

0:14:20 > 0:14:22I think it was as we expected.

0:14:22 > 0:14:24We were against the world's best.

0:14:24 > 0:14:28Very efficient, they're clinical and it was really tough.

0:14:28 > 0:14:30We tried until the 80th minute, we kept playing and

0:14:30 > 0:14:32obviously disappointed but we will take some

0:14:32 > 0:14:35positives from that.

0:14:35 > 0:14:37By the end of the game, when we didn't have

0:14:37 > 0:14:40much energy, we were skating the line with no punch and Melbourne

0:14:40 > 0:14:43were just like sat on, you know, their line kept intact and we didn't

0:14:43 > 0:14:46have any punch through it.

0:14:46 > 0:14:48So they defended that quite well and, like I say,

0:14:48 > 0:14:50they are a very good side.

0:14:50 > 0:14:52Credit to them.

0:14:52 > 0:14:55To be the best, you have got to play against the best.

0:14:55 > 0:14:58Unfortunately we did not get the result.

0:14:58 > 0:15:01But we saw what a top standard of team did and hopefully

0:15:01 > 0:15:07that will be a catalyst to what we want to do this year.

0:15:07 > 0:15:09It was quite a harsh scoreline on Leeds, wasn't it?

0:15:09 > 0:15:12Is that just a reflection of Super League versus NRL,

0:15:12 > 0:15:13or just how good Melbourne are?

0:15:13 > 0:15:17I think a reflection of how good Melbourne were.

0:15:17 > 0:15:19They were ruthless.

0:15:19 > 0:15:22Big, strong, athletic.

0:15:22 > 0:15:25It was always going to be a tall order for the Rhinos to go down

0:15:25 > 0:15:27there and it certainly proved that.

0:15:27 > 0:15:30In the end I thought Melbourne had a great win.

0:15:30 > 0:15:31Cameron Smith was fantastic.

0:15:31 > 0:15:33And a blow out in the end.

0:15:33 > 0:15:35The defence was what Brian McDermott picked out afterwards.

0:15:35 > 0:15:42Outstanding, suffocating, awesome.

0:15:42 > 0:15:45Just some of the words he used about the Melbourne defence.

0:15:45 > 0:15:47You could agree with all of that.

0:15:47 > 0:15:49I think Melbourne have prided themselves on their defence

0:15:49 > 0:15:50over the last 20 years.

0:15:50 > 0:15:53That is why they have been one of the most successful sides.

0:15:53 > 0:15:54Got great kick chasing.

0:15:54 > 0:15:56They have got great systems and structures that

0:15:56 > 0:15:57everybody buys into.

0:15:57 > 0:15:59That is why they are so efficient.

0:15:59 > 0:16:02They have got two of the best players the world has ever seen.

0:16:02 > 0:16:03In Smith and Slater.

0:16:03 > 0:16:06If you just watch these clips, these highlights, all these players

0:16:06 > 0:16:11are in the same system, in the same structure.

0:16:11 > 0:16:13And they almost exactly what their roles are.

0:16:13 > 0:16:15And that is the beauty of Melbourne.

0:16:15 > 0:16:17That is why they win games and win Grand Finals.

0:16:17 > 0:16:20Is it just a question that Leeds couldn't find their way through?

0:16:20 > 0:16:22Can you see a way through that or not?

0:16:22 > 0:16:25You can't and I think it is a reflection of their system.

0:16:25 > 0:16:28I think Leeds quite rightly tried to play a Super League style.

0:16:28 > 0:16:31You cannot beat Melbourne trying to play like an NRL side.

0:16:31 > 0:16:34And throughout the game, they came up with some errors doing it.

0:16:34 > 0:16:36But look at the Melbourne defence and their systems.

0:16:36 > 0:16:37It was first class.

0:16:37 > 0:16:39And it is tough to defend against.

0:16:39 > 0:16:41It takes a lot of energy out of you.

0:16:41 > 0:16:42Can I just say, ouch!

0:16:42 > 0:16:43On that one!

0:16:43 > 0:16:45When they got the chance, they fired in.

0:16:45 > 0:16:47It is a tough way to defend.

0:16:47 > 0:16:48But the systems are great.

0:16:48 > 0:16:49Who says wingers can't tackle as well!

0:16:49 > 0:16:50Absolutely!

0:16:50 > 0:16:52It wasn't even a fair fight!

0:16:52 > 0:16:54You mentioned the errors and Brian McDermott mentioned

0:16:54 > 0:16:55the errors as well.

0:16:55 > 0:16:58Was that Leeds forcing it or is it early in the season,

0:16:58 > 0:16:59a mixture of the two?

0:16:59 > 0:17:02I think it is just lack of quality skill.

0:17:02 > 0:17:04I think Leeds wanted to play with the ball,

0:17:04 > 0:17:07move the ball around but just on the end you've got to be

0:17:07 > 0:17:08a little bit better.

0:17:08 > 0:17:10Stevie Ward will be disappointed with that past.

0:17:10 > 0:17:11He is a better player than that.

0:17:11 > 0:17:14This mistake here, you just can't do this against Melbourne.

0:17:14 > 0:17:16You have forced a set of six.

0:17:16 > 0:17:18You think we've got another set of six on their line.

0:17:18 > 0:17:22And then it is just a comedy of errors between Ryan Hall and Jimmy.

0:17:22 > 0:17:24I think as well you don't get that many opportunities

0:17:24 > 0:17:25on the Melbourne line.

0:17:25 > 0:17:27And you've got to be clinical to take them.

0:17:27 > 0:17:30And I think forcing passes and poor skill, I think Leeds

0:17:30 > 0:17:32played in the right way, the expansive way, but just

0:17:32 > 0:17:35didn't have the quality of skill on the end of it.

0:17:35 > 0:17:36You mentioned Cameron Smith.

0:17:36 > 0:17:38He has been an absolutely brilliant player for so many years.

0:17:38 > 0:17:43What is it that is so special about him?

0:17:43 > 0:17:46Because when you're watching a game, you're not necessarily going,

0:17:46 > 0:17:48wow, Cameron Smith, look what he's just done?

0:17:48 > 0:17:50I think it's because you never see him doing something

0:17:50 > 0:17:51wrong, that's the thing.

0:17:51 > 0:17:53Everything that he does is good.

0:17:53 > 0:17:54He is composed, he is good.

0:17:54 > 0:17:57I think he can read the game far better than any other

0:17:57 > 0:17:58player within the game.

0:17:58 > 0:18:01I think he has had the ability to do that for a long while.

0:18:01 > 0:18:03But he has that experience now.

0:18:03 > 0:18:05He has been in that many Australian games, Grand Finals,

0:18:05 > 0:18:08he knows better than anybody else how to win a big game.

0:18:08 > 0:18:11What step comes next, where does the ball need to go.

0:18:11 > 0:18:12Who needs the ball.

0:18:12 > 0:18:13He's the man in charge of it.

0:18:13 > 0:18:15Yes, and I think it is just his quality.

0:18:16 > 0:18:17And he never looks flustered.

0:18:17 > 0:18:19He plays 80 minutes week in and week out.

0:18:19 > 0:18:21It is tough whichever position you play.

0:18:21 > 0:18:23But playing hooker at 80 minutes, it looks like he comes off

0:18:23 > 0:18:25and he hasn't broken a sweat.

0:18:25 > 0:18:27It is just his quality and decision making,

0:18:27 > 0:18:29when to do the small things at the right time.

0:18:29 > 0:18:32The Cam Slam I think he has been calling it!

0:18:32 > 0:18:34He has won every single honour available to him.

0:18:34 > 0:18:37So what are the lessons that Leeds will learn from that and how

0:18:37 > 0:18:41will that stand them in good stead for the rest of the season?

0:18:41 > 0:18:47I think Leeds have got a good style for Super League.

0:18:47 > 0:18:49The ability to throw the ball around does stand them

0:18:50 > 0:18:51in good stead for the year.

0:18:51 > 0:18:53And they showed some courage as well.

0:18:53 > 0:18:55They did not back out of the challenge.

0:18:55 > 0:18:57They just came up against the far better team

0:18:57 > 0:18:58than they were on the day.

0:18:58 > 0:19:01I think Leeds just need to understand that when they get

0:19:01 > 0:19:03the good ball they need to build some more pressure,

0:19:03 > 0:19:06which they kind of do when they get into Grand Finals.

0:19:06 > 0:19:09But all year they do not bother doing it and then they get

0:19:09 > 0:19:11to Old Trafford and decide to do it.

0:19:11 > 0:19:14So they will have learned some good lessons and it is a great experience

0:19:14 > 0:19:17for a lot of those players to go down under and play

0:19:17 > 0:19:19the best side in the world.

0:19:19 > 0:19:21It got you a few trophies though, didn't it, that style!

0:19:21 > 0:19:23There was no official World Club series this year,

0:19:23 > 0:19:26but Wigan and Hull FC spent another week in Australia, and took

0:19:26 > 0:19:28on their own challengers from the NRL on Saturday.

0:19:28 > 0:19:30Hull were up first in Saturday's Sydney double-header

0:19:30 > 0:19:33and it was the Black and White's first match against a side

0:19:33 > 0:19:35from the southern hemisphere since they played New Zealand

0:19:35 > 0:19:38in the last match at the Boulevard in 2002.

0:19:38 > 0:19:40Despite being without captain Danny Houston and Vice Scott Taylor,

0:19:40 > 0:19:42the injury hit early birds got the opening try.

0:19:42 > 0:19:44Albert Kelly crossing after ten minutes.

0:19:44 > 0:19:46Dragons head coach Paul McGregor fielded a strong side

0:19:46 > 0:19:48and his team quickly responded.

0:19:48 > 0:19:55Tim Lafai pulling them level with 15 minutes played.

0:19:55 > 0:19:58The NRL team continued to press and got their rewards.

0:19:58 > 0:20:00Kurt Mann said the side's flourishing try scorer

0:20:00 > 0:20:02Jason Nightingale to take the lead on the half-hour mark.

0:20:02 > 0:20:05But it was the Super League side who went in ahead

0:20:05 > 0:20:07at half-time thanks to a flash of magic from Kelly.

0:20:07 > 0:20:10A sidestep past Tarik Sims and a burst of power saw him

0:20:10 > 0:20:14wrestle over the try line for his second score.

0:20:14 > 0:20:16On the other side of the hooter came another brace of tries.

0:20:17 > 0:20:19But this time the Dragons' McDonald.

0:20:19 > 0:20:22An acrobatic 47th minute dive at the corner was worthy

0:20:22 > 0:20:25of giving his team the lead.

0:20:25 > 0:20:28And it was deja vu just five minutes later as an almost copycat

0:20:28 > 0:20:35finish gave the NRL side the slender advantage.

0:20:35 > 0:20:38Hull regrouped and valiantly responded.

0:20:38 > 0:20:40Liam Watts getting his rewards for a strong performance

0:20:40 > 0:20:42with the 52nd minute try.

0:20:42 > 0:20:44Marc Sneyd's subsequent conversion left the scores level

0:20:44 > 0:20:47with over 20 minutes to play.

0:20:47 > 0:20:51The tie was only settled in the 77th minute.

0:20:51 > 0:20:54When the Dragons' Kurt Mann evaded the early bird's defence.

0:20:54 > 0:20:57But despite the narrow defeat, the fans will no doubt recount

0:20:57 > 0:21:03fondly the members of Hull on tour.

0:21:03 > 0:21:05The Warriors' 2018 tour of new South Wales also

0:21:05 > 0:21:07concluded on Saturday.

0:21:07 > 0:21:10Wigan were up after Hull at the ANC stadium and looking to block

0:21:10 > 0:21:12a hat-trick of NRL wins against their Super

0:21:12 > 0:21:17League opponents.

0:21:17 > 0:21:19With six minutes played they made the perfect start.

0:21:19 > 0:21:21Sean O'Loughlin's hit was pounced on by Tom Davies.

0:21:21 > 0:21:23A last-gasp touch on the ball was confirmed by video

0:21:23 > 0:21:27ref and the Warriors were up and running.

0:21:30 > 0:21:32The Rabbitohs drew level before the quarter hour mark.

0:21:32 > 0:21:33England international Tom Burgess was an almost

0:21:34 > 0:21:37superhuman reach for the line.

0:21:37 > 0:21:42And after another video ref consultation the try was awarded.

0:21:42 > 0:21:46The Sydney side began to dominate and took the lead five minutes on.

0:21:46 > 0:21:49Hunt spotted a gap and dashed through the Wigan defence before

0:21:49 > 0:21:56feeding Campbell Graham who dived in for the score.

0:21:56 > 0:21:59The NRL side extended their lead on the half-hour mark

0:21:59 > 0:22:03with Leon Marshall sidelined for a professional foul,

0:22:03 > 0:22:05the Rabbitohs capitalised on the extra man and Richard Kenna

0:22:05 > 0:22:10put daylight between the sides.

0:22:10 > 0:22:13Wigan closed the gap before the half-time hooter.

0:22:13 > 0:22:16A neat passage of play down the right saw winger Tom Davies role

0:22:16 > 0:22:23in for his second and the decision again going to the big screen.

0:22:23 > 0:22:26A quiet and cagey second-half meant the only other try of the game

0:22:26 > 0:22:29arrived in the 76th minute.

0:22:29 > 0:22:34Adam Doueihi the scorer for South Sydney.

0:22:34 > 0:22:36Despite the defeat, Wigan coach Shaun Wane hailed the trip

0:22:36 > 0:22:39and unbelievable experience and players and fans no doubt

0:22:39 > 0:22:47will hope to return in the future for more action down under.

0:22:48 > 0:22:51No doubt that for the two clubs involved this has been a fantastic

0:22:51 > 0:22:53experience for them and a success.

0:22:53 > 0:22:57But are you A, a fan of it, and B, what do we get,

0:22:57 > 0:22:59what does the rest of Super League get from it?

0:22:59 > 0:23:00I am a fan of it.

0:23:00 > 0:23:04I think you have got to applaud Wigan and Hull for going down there,

0:23:04 > 0:23:08taking that Super League game to Australia.

0:23:08 > 0:23:10Playing the game out there, then playing the friendlies

0:23:10 > 0:23:11against the NRL sides.

0:23:11 > 0:23:14I think the clubs themselves, their players are getting exposure

0:23:14 > 0:23:15to a high level of game.

0:23:15 > 0:23:16The NRL game as well.

0:23:16 > 0:23:19And I think it's just great for our brand of Super League that

0:23:19 > 0:23:21it's out there and out in Australia.

0:23:21 > 0:23:23Maybe take it to another country next time?

0:23:23 > 0:23:25Is that what you would like to see?

0:23:25 > 0:23:26Yes, I think so.

0:23:26 > 0:23:29I think it shows there is appetite there and I think just

0:23:29 > 0:23:31to echo what Jamie said, I think we can, their foresight

0:23:31 > 0:23:35to give up a home game and take it lock stock over there was great.

0:23:35 > 0:23:37I think America would be a great destination.

0:23:37 > 0:23:38Dubai.

0:23:38 > 0:23:41I think we've got a great product and the more we share it,

0:23:41 > 0:23:45the more we put it on a pedestal, I think that is what the game needs.

0:23:45 > 0:23:46I'm with you with America.

0:23:46 > 0:23:49I think there is a real opportunity for rugby league in North America

0:23:49 > 0:23:54and we've got a World Cup in 2025, we need to start doing things now.

0:23:54 > 0:23:55We need to get a foothold in that country.

0:23:55 > 0:23:57Hopefully, fingers crossed, England will be playing their mid-season.

0:23:57 > 0:23:59Well, Wigan are back in more familiar surroundings

0:23:59 > 0:24:03on Friday when they return to Super League action.

0:24:03 > 0:24:06There is commentary on that match on 5live Sports Extra

0:24:06 > 0:24:10from seven o'clock on Friday.

0:24:10 > 0:24:13And don't forget that Monday is the day to download the latest

0:24:13 > 0:24:145live rugby league podcast.

0:24:14 > 0:24:17There's a new one of those available every week.

0:24:17 > 0:24:19Well there has been confirmation that Wayne Bennett is staying

0:24:19 > 0:24:22on as coach of the England rugby league team.

0:24:22 > 0:24:27The Australian will remain in charge for another two years.

0:24:27 > 0:24:30Wayne Bennett first took charge of England for the 2016 Four Nations

0:24:30 > 0:24:32tournament when just one win from three matches saw them

0:24:32 > 0:24:37fail to make the final.

0:24:37 > 0:24:38Oh, it is intercepted!

0:24:38 > 0:24:40And this man will take some stopping.

0:24:40 > 0:24:43Johnson is away and they're not even going to get close

0:24:43 > 0:24:46before he touches down.

0:24:46 > 0:24:53He is a heartbreaker, isn't he, an English heartbreaker.

0:24:53 > 0:24:58But the World Cup was a different story.

0:24:58 > 0:24:59It's Gale.

0:24:59 > 0:25:01Back it comes to Kevin Brown.

0:25:01 > 0:25:02They're trying to craft something here.

0:25:02 > 0:25:09It's got to be an opening try for Jermaine McGillvary!

0:25:10 > 0:25:12England made it all the way to the final,

0:25:12 > 0:25:16where they were narrowly beaten by Australia.

0:25:16 > 0:25:19Bennett will now lead them into a match against New Zealand

0:25:19 > 0:25:21in June and a further three Test matches against the

0:25:21 > 0:25:22Kiwis in the autumn.

0:25:22 > 0:25:24Obviously you were part of that England camp

0:25:24 > 0:25:25as the England team manager.

0:25:25 > 0:25:27Is this the right decision for you?

0:25:27 > 0:25:29100%, yes.

0:25:29 > 0:25:30Wayne Bennett is outstanding.

0:25:30 > 0:25:32He is an outstanding coach in my opinion.

0:25:32 > 0:25:35You get to meet a lot of people within the game who have big

0:25:35 > 0:25:38reputations and you're disappointed when you meet them face to face.

0:25:38 > 0:25:39He exceeds all expectations.

0:25:39 > 0:25:41The players want him round.

0:25:41 > 0:25:43The results speak for themselves.

0:25:43 > 0:25:46I think you saw the transition of the side to a Wayne Bennett

0:25:46 > 0:25:48side when we beat Samoa in the mid-season test.

0:25:48 > 0:25:51And we saw it again in the World Cup as well.

0:25:51 > 0:25:54And I think it's fantastic news for England and for the game in this

0:25:54 > 0:25:57country that we've got the man in charge for two more years.

0:25:57 > 0:26:00So having seen it up close for a couple of months

0:26:00 > 0:26:03while you were down there, what is it that he does that leave

0:26:03 > 0:26:06the players just all of them saying how wonderful it was?

0:26:06 > 0:26:09You know what, players want things to be clear.

0:26:09 > 0:26:10They want clarity.

0:26:10 > 0:26:14What you need to stay in the team and why you are in the team and why

0:26:14 > 0:26:15you're not in the team.

0:26:15 > 0:26:16He gives them that.

0:26:16 > 0:26:18He creates an environment where they enjoy themselves.

0:26:18 > 0:26:20Where they are rewarded for working hard and rewarded

0:26:20 > 0:26:22for being an adult, for making adult decisions.

0:26:22 > 0:26:25And he puts it all back on them in that respect.

0:26:25 > 0:26:26And I think that is what players crave.

0:26:27 > 0:26:28And most coaches know that.

0:26:28 > 0:26:30But not all coaches deliver that.

0:26:30 > 0:26:32There has been talk though from Kevin Sinfield,

0:26:32 > 0:26:35he has done the review and everything and the one

0:26:35 > 0:26:38thing they had picked up on was in the last 30 metres

0:26:38 > 0:26:39there was not necessarily enough creativity in that

0:26:39 > 0:26:41final against Australia.

0:26:41 > 0:26:44In terms of who Wayne Bennett might bring in alongside to break things

0:26:44 > 0:26:47up, who would you like to see?

0:26:47 > 0:26:50I think in terms of players or in terms of coaches?

0:26:50 > 0:26:53In terms of coaching because we know it is Wayne Bennett, what we do not

0:26:53 > 0:26:55know is who the sports staff are.

0:26:55 > 0:26:58For me in that sense, to answer that question, I think Sean Long.

0:26:58 > 0:27:02I think on the international stage he is a brilliant player, creative,

0:27:02 > 0:27:05outside the box and doing a really good job at St Helens.

0:27:05 > 0:27:08I know they're happy with their staff.

0:27:08 > 0:27:11You know, speaking to the Warrington players, it was a great

0:27:11 > 0:27:13tribute to the staff.

0:27:13 > 0:27:16In terms of specialist, last 30 metres of a game,

0:27:16 > 0:27:20it would be Sean Long, for me.

0:27:20 > 0:27:23I just think I would like to some onus on the players themselves.

0:27:23 > 0:27:25I believe we've got a young half-back in terms

0:27:25 > 0:27:31of international experience.

0:27:31 > 0:27:33We used Luke Gale in there.

0:27:33 > 0:27:34And I think those players need to grow.

0:27:34 > 0:27:36Need to understand that internationally it is not

0:27:36 > 0:27:40about scoring the first set of six or the second set of six.

0:27:40 > 0:27:42It's probably the third set of six before you pull

0:27:42 > 0:27:43the trigger and score a try.

0:27:43 > 0:27:46And the sooner the half-backs understand that, the better we'll

0:27:46 > 0:27:47get in their 30 metres.

0:27:47 > 0:27:50A thumbs up from both of you that Wayne Bennett stays?

0:27:50 > 0:27:51Absolutely.

0:27:51 > 0:27:52Yes.

0:27:52 > 0:27:55Well you can see all three matches of the England Test match series

0:27:55 > 0:27:57against New Zealand right here on the BBC.

0:27:57 > 0:27:59The first game is in Hull on the 27th of October.

0:27:59 > 0:28:02Now there were two Super League matches this week, on Friday

0:28:02 > 0:28:04night was Derby night for Widnes and Warrington.

0:28:04 > 0:28:06It hasn't been a happy start to Super League life

0:28:06 > 0:28:09for the new Warrington coach Steve Price, who went to Widnes

0:28:09 > 0:28:12on the back of two defeats from two.

0:28:12 > 0:28:14Local derby, it's going to be a really important game for us.

0:28:14 > 0:28:16Especially coming off two losses at the start of the season.

0:28:16 > 0:28:18It's a matter of personal responsibility to nullify

0:28:18 > 0:28:20those penalties.

0:28:20 > 0:28:24It was one win, one defeat for Widnes and Denis Betts,

0:28:24 > 0:28:27who had lost their last nine matches against their local rivals.

0:28:27 > 0:28:30To only have two points after putting two massive efforts

0:28:30 > 0:28:32in, we've got to get points.

0:28:32 > 0:28:39We've got Warrington next on Friday night,

0:28:39 > 0:28:47they need points, they are smart, they have got a really strong squad.

0:28:47 > 0:28:50So we have got to dust ourselves down and come out and play.

0:28:50 > 0:28:51Quickly played.

0:28:51 > 0:28:53Clark out of dummy half here.

0:28:53 > 0:28:56Driven on by Cooper as Warrington go in search of the Widnes goal-line.

0:28:56 > 0:28:57Clark.

0:28:57 > 0:29:00A little chip by Declan Patten and up goes Ryan Atkins!

0:29:00 > 0:29:03Who has taken it, plucked it out of midair, and he's got

0:29:03 > 0:29:12the touchdown as well.

0:29:12 > 0:29:14There's a lot of pressure on.

0:29:14 > 0:29:15Here is Ratchford!

0:29:15 > 0:29:16Oh, wonderful!

0:29:16 > 0:29:19Weaving run by Stefan Ratchford.

0:29:19 > 0:29:21Classy play by the full-back.

0:29:21 > 0:29:29An eye-catching try for Warrington.

0:29:29 > 0:29:32They're trying to make progress here.

0:29:32 > 0:29:34Myer going to that right-hand side.

0:29:34 > 0:29:37Myer again, barking out the orders here and trying to get

0:29:37 > 0:29:44players in position.

0:29:44 > 0:29:47Little grubber kick to the in-goal area and taken by Krisnan Inu.

0:29:47 > 0:29:50Great finish, well read by Krisnan Inu.

0:29:50 > 0:29:51And the finish is good.

0:29:51 > 0:29:52Oh, hang on.

0:29:52 > 0:29:53Hang on.

0:29:53 > 0:29:56The referee wants another look.

0:29:56 > 0:29:59He thinks it's a try.

0:29:59 > 0:30:02They're having a look at onside-offside.

0:30:02 > 0:30:06There's nothing from that angle to rule the try out.

0:30:06 > 0:30:10Grounding is good.

0:30:10 > 0:30:14So it looks as though this is going to stand as a Widnes try.

0:30:14 > 0:30:15It is!

0:30:15 > 0:30:23And they have one back before the break.

0:30:23 > 0:30:25Now it's Patten.

0:30:25 > 0:30:26Delivering it back again.

0:30:26 > 0:30:27Ratchford.

0:30:27 > 0:30:29Hauls it out to this left-hand side.

0:30:29 > 0:30:31Curry with the pass away.

0:30:31 > 0:30:35Warrington knocking on the door again here.

0:30:35 > 0:30:36Here is Curry.

0:30:36 > 0:30:38Ratchford asks for it, gets it.

0:30:38 > 0:30:39Gets a kick in.

0:30:39 > 0:30:43Beautifully flighted and Atkins is there again!

0:30:43 > 0:30:48Almost a carbon copy of his first half try.

0:30:48 > 0:30:51Great aerial presence.

0:30:51 > 0:30:59Quickly skipping away.

0:30:59 > 0:31:00And a searching high kick again here.

0:31:00 > 0:31:01Ratchford is underneath it.

0:31:01 > 0:31:03The referee has taken a tumble!

0:31:03 > 0:31:04The referee slipped over.

0:31:04 > 0:31:06Chris Houston is down as well.

0:31:06 > 0:31:08It looks as though they might have collided here.

0:31:08 > 0:31:13Phil Bentham is looking a little shaken.

0:31:13 > 0:31:14There is the collision.

0:31:14 > 0:31:17And he has banged his head on the ground as well.

0:31:17 > 0:31:20Chris Houston offering his apology.

0:31:20 > 0:31:26The referee, Phil Bentham, having to go off for a head check.

0:31:26 > 0:31:29And Scott Mikalauskas is the man who comes on as a substitute referee

0:31:29 > 0:31:35for the rest of the game.

0:31:35 > 0:31:38Clark.

0:31:38 > 0:31:39Shuffling along that line again.

0:31:39 > 0:31:42Another high, searching kick from Patten.

0:31:42 > 0:31:45It is taken very well.

0:31:45 > 0:31:47It has been dropped!

0:31:47 > 0:31:48Warrington had it back quickly enough.

0:31:48 > 0:31:51The referee says play on and here is Clark again in real

0:31:51 > 0:31:54tangle of Widnes defenders.

0:31:54 > 0:31:57No way through.

0:31:57 > 0:31:59Zero tackle.

0:31:59 > 0:32:02Tackle count starts here and that is a penalty.

0:32:03 > 0:32:06Jay Chapelhow climbing all over.

0:32:06 > 0:32:12Giving the penalty away.

0:32:12 > 0:32:15It is very kickable for Bryson Goodwin.

0:32:15 > 0:32:18And as he puts it over it is a comfortable lead that

0:32:18 > 0:32:24Warrington have now.

0:32:24 > 0:32:26Daryl Clark wants to get up and get on with it.

0:32:26 > 0:32:27Curry plays it.

0:32:27 > 0:32:29A little push from Inuu as well.

0:32:29 > 0:32:32Who is getting a little involved here as well.

0:32:32 > 0:32:34Several players coming together.

0:32:34 > 0:32:37The referee says play on.

0:32:37 > 0:32:45And Jack Hughes will go through and score the try.

0:32:45 > 0:32:48I think there is a bit of unpicking to go on here,

0:32:48 > 0:32:49it is still a little heated.

0:32:49 > 0:32:52The referee Mikalauskas puts the square in the air.

0:32:52 > 0:32:55They will have to look again at this.

0:32:55 > 0:32:59Well a push and a shove between those two.

0:32:59 > 0:33:01Daryl Clark comes in and gets involved as well, just trying

0:33:01 > 0:33:04to barge Krisnan Inu out of the way.

0:33:04 > 0:33:06That attracts a few more.

0:33:06 > 0:33:10All rather unnecessary.

0:33:10 > 0:33:12And the referee with a decision to make.

0:33:12 > 0:33:14It is obviously no try.

0:33:14 > 0:33:23And tempers calming down a little now.

0:33:23 > 0:33:25Houston.

0:33:25 > 0:33:27Getting the arm free.

0:33:27 > 0:33:30He has done really well to get that arm free.

0:33:30 > 0:33:35So Widnes still with an opportunity here.

0:33:35 > 0:33:40Out of dummy half it is thrown and a kick towards this right-hand side.

0:33:40 > 0:33:42A leap in the air by Krisnan Inu, who will get his

0:33:43 > 0:33:45second of the night.

0:33:45 > 0:33:49Well, we have seen several tries scored in a similar manner.

0:33:49 > 0:33:52It is Krisnan Inu with the latest.

0:33:52 > 0:33:57But they're still a couple of scores behind.

0:33:57 > 0:34:00A feeling of relief around the place after that!

0:34:00 > 0:34:03Yes, I think it was.

0:34:03 > 0:34:05Played Leeds and had a disappointing result over at Huddersfield

0:34:05 > 0:34:08and they needed that win.

0:34:08 > 0:34:14It was a tough game, local derby.

0:34:14 > 0:34:16I think they've just not clicked as yet but they were tough,

0:34:16 > 0:34:19they were resilient and managed to get that much needed two points.

0:34:19 > 0:34:22Stefan Ratchford was picked out by Steve Price as man

0:34:22 > 0:34:23of the match performance.

0:34:23 > 0:34:25He had taken a bit of criticism.

0:34:25 > 0:34:27But he really did step up, didn't he?

0:34:27 > 0:34:28He did.

0:34:28 > 0:34:30And by Stef's standards he was disappointed

0:34:30 > 0:34:32with the last two performances.

0:34:32 > 0:34:34What I will say is you wouldn't meet a more meticulous professional

0:34:35 > 0:34:39and whose standards are way up high.

0:34:39 > 0:34:46So it didn't surprise me that he came out with that performance.

0:34:46 > 0:34:49And put his body, that clip there putting himself in the frame.

0:34:49 > 0:34:51You either catch and score or you get smashed.

0:34:51 > 0:34:53And just his all-round game was quality.

0:34:53 > 0:34:56And just another great kick, on the money, leading to Ryan Atkins

0:34:56 > 0:34:59and that second try.

0:34:59 > 0:35:02A really, really good professional and I expected that that

0:35:02 > 0:35:03performance from him.

0:35:03 > 0:35:04He was outstanding.

0:35:04 > 0:35:07And almost the season starts now, we can kick on finally?

0:35:07 > 0:35:10Yes, I think it was relief because of the expectation and been

0:35:10 > 0:35:12a lot of change with the new coach.

0:35:12 > 0:35:15But on the flip side of that, speaking to Steve,

0:35:15 > 0:35:16there was no panic.

0:35:16 > 0:35:19They knew it was going to come and a lot of it was down

0:35:19 > 0:35:22to individual errors and things you can fix easily.

0:35:22 > 0:35:24The systems and their fitness and everything,

0:35:24 > 0:35:26they were really pleased with.

0:35:26 > 0:35:29So a big game on Friday night but glad to get that two points.

0:35:29 > 0:35:31And for Widnes it was a good performance, wasn't it?

0:35:31 > 0:35:33They've had two on the bounce that they've lost.

0:35:33 > 0:35:36But they put a huge amount of effort in.

0:35:36 > 0:35:37Yes, they are a great side, Widnes.

0:35:37 > 0:35:46We saw that with the result against Catalans.

0:35:46 > 0:35:47And they pushed Cas close.

0:35:47 > 0:35:48So there are good side.

0:35:48 > 0:35:51They have a small squad but they have got a good

0:35:51 > 0:35:52coach in Denis Betts.

0:35:52 > 0:35:54You expect them to be competitive throughout the year.

0:35:54 > 0:35:57But they don't want to go too long without getting

0:35:57 > 0:35:58another win, do they?

0:35:58 > 0:35:59That's right.

0:35:59 > 0:36:01The system they've got puts a lot of pressure on.

0:36:01 > 0:36:03And Warrington, imagine if they had gone three,

0:36:03 > 0:36:05then there is real pressure on you.

0:36:05 > 0:36:08So you've got to try and get those little victories, those close ones,

0:36:08 > 0:36:09you need to win them.

0:36:09 > 0:36:12Well no game this week for the Super League leaders

0:36:12 > 0:36:14St Helens, but a few of them have been busy telling us

0:36:14 > 0:36:17all about their team-mates in the latest edition of Most

0:36:17 > 0:36:21Likely.

0:36:21 > 0:36:25Quickest would be Adam Swift or Regan Grace.

0:36:25 > 0:36:26Quickest, Regan Grace.

0:36:26 > 0:36:30Ben Mee.

0:36:30 > 0:36:31Alex Walmsley.

0:36:31 > 0:36:33He's always on it.

0:36:33 > 0:36:35Maybe Danny Richardson, someone like that.

0:36:35 > 0:36:38You know, they're on all the social media platforms and you know,

0:36:38 > 0:36:41they're constantly checking everything.

0:36:41 > 0:36:42James Roby.

0:36:42 > 0:36:43He's always on it.

0:36:43 > 0:36:46I actually sit next to him and every time I catch him,

0:36:46 > 0:36:49I always say every time I catch you, you owe me a pound.

0:36:49 > 0:36:54So if he held up to that, I'd be a millionaire by now!

0:36:54 > 0:36:57Dab, Benny Baba.

0:36:57 > 0:36:59Probably Adam Smith would be the most likely to dab.

0:36:59 > 0:37:00Young Danny Richardson.

0:37:00 > 0:37:02Bit of a cheeky lad.

0:37:02 > 0:37:05And yeah, when all that was going about, he was always giving it one.

0:37:06 > 0:37:10I was nearly going to do one then!

0:37:10 > 0:37:14There's a constant battle over the music in the gym.

0:37:14 > 0:37:17It's the same playlist we've had for about six months.

0:37:17 > 0:37:18Alex Walmsley.

0:37:18 > 0:37:21Yeah, he likes to take charge and to be fair to him,

0:37:21 > 0:37:25he's got a good balance of music.

0:37:25 > 0:37:29Jonny Lomax and Luke Thompson who are very much house and dance.

0:37:29 > 0:37:31It's not very good!

0:37:31 > 0:37:34And then we've got kind of Jon Wilkin, a few '80s kind

0:37:34 > 0:37:38of golden oldies as some of the young lads called it.

0:37:38 > 0:37:44And then obviously there is an R&B group as well.

0:37:44 > 0:37:46Probably Louis.

0:37:46 > 0:37:48Probably Louis McCarthy-Scarsbrook.

0:37:48 > 0:37:51Because he's that loud that someone would probably hear him.

0:37:51 > 0:37:55He's constantly just up there in terms of energy.

0:37:55 > 0:37:57It's hard to be sort of down and feeling miserable

0:37:57 > 0:37:59when you're around him.

0:37:59 > 0:38:01You know, he attracts people wherever he goes.

0:38:01 > 0:38:02Take to a desert island?

0:38:02 > 0:38:05Probably Luke Thompson.

0:38:05 > 0:38:12Could probably jump on his back and he could swim home.

0:38:12 > 0:38:16Who would save you two on a desert island?

0:38:17 > 0:38:19That says it all!

0:38:19 > 0:38:21Oh, bless you.

0:38:21 > 0:38:23Well finally to Hull Kingston Rovers, when

0:38:23 > 0:38:24the visitors were Catalan.

0:38:24 > 0:38:27And two teams looking for their first Super League

0:38:27 > 0:38:30win of the season.

0:38:30 > 0:38:32# It's all behind me, there's good luck up ahead.

0:38:32 > 0:38:36# Once bitten, twice shy, this time it feels so good.

0:38:36 > 0:38:40# I'd hate to see it fall apart.

0:38:40 > 0:38:45# The first time I was a fool.

0:38:45 > 0:38:48# It happened to me again.

0:38:48 > 0:38:56# Third time lucky.

0:38:56 > 0:38:58Well even this early in the season a crucial game for Rovers

0:38:58 > 0:39:03and the Catalan Dragons.

0:39:03 > 0:39:07Both teams have been hit hard by injuries in the early stages,

0:39:07 > 0:39:11losing those matches.

0:39:11 > 0:39:13Rovers will feel they possibly should have got something out

0:39:13 > 0:39:17of the trip to Leeds.

0:39:17 > 0:39:20And Catalan failing to meet St Helens last weekend of course.

0:39:20 > 0:39:24Saints down to 12 men.

0:39:24 > 0:39:26So is it going to be Rovers or...

0:39:26 > 0:39:31The Dragons off the mark, Thornley with a good run.

0:39:31 > 0:39:34And here is Broughton now for the Dragons,

0:39:34 > 0:39:44a good, positive start.

0:39:47 > 0:39:49Important for Catalan to get off to a flying start.

0:39:50 > 0:39:50Garcia brought down.

0:39:50 > 0:39:52What on earth where they doing!

0:39:52 > 0:39:54There was no one at the play golf ball.

0:39:54 > 0:39:55Luke Walsh is fuming.

0:39:55 > 0:39:56Steve McNamara will be too.

0:39:56 > 0:39:58That's a gift for Hull KR.

0:39:58 > 0:40:01Tommy Lee.

0:40:01 > 0:40:03Certainly with Maguire in the Rovers ranks,

0:40:03 > 0:40:08they won't be afraid to throw the ball around.

0:40:08 > 0:40:11That was a poor mistake, wasn't it, from Catalan right at the start?

0:40:12 > 0:40:13Little kick through.

0:40:13 > 0:40:14There's another error.

0:40:14 > 0:40:18And this time it's Luke Walsh.

0:40:18 > 0:40:21Missed the match against his former club, Saints, with injury.

0:40:21 > 0:40:22REFEREE: Ball in.

0:40:22 > 0:40:23Out.

0:40:23 > 0:40:27Play on.

0:40:27 > 0:40:30COMMENTARY: First score always important.

0:40:30 > 0:40:36Lee McNamara knows as well, it's a difficult ground to come and win.

0:40:36 > 0:40:41Rovers will be hoping that is certainly the case tonight.

0:40:41 > 0:40:43I can't really stress how important it is.

0:40:43 > 0:40:47Three weeks in, but a big win for one of these tonight...

0:40:47 > 0:40:52Atkin, stopped just short.

0:40:52 > 0:40:55First real opportunity for Hull KR.

0:40:55 > 0:40:56Lee.

0:40:56 > 0:40:58The ball comes to the right-hand side, that's good hands.

0:40:59 > 0:41:00Dagger.

0:41:00 > 0:41:01A chance here for sure!

0:41:01 > 0:41:04That's a terrific try from Ryan Shaw.

0:41:04 > 0:41:06He moved the ball very quickly.

0:41:06 > 0:41:08Maguire involved.

0:41:08 > 0:41:11It was the teenage full-back, Will Dagger with a pass

0:41:11 > 0:41:19and Shaw did the honours.

0:41:19 > 0:41:21You just feel at the moment that Catalan cannot get

0:41:21 > 0:41:25a foothold in this game.

0:41:25 > 0:41:27Shaun Lunt and Mose Masoe have made a real difference

0:41:27 > 0:41:30since they've come on.

0:41:30 > 0:41:32And both involved there.

0:41:32 > 0:41:35There is Carney.

0:41:35 > 0:41:38That was an inauspicious kick, to be fair.

0:41:38 > 0:41:41But the bounce is kind.

0:41:41 > 0:41:42Lunt with a little kick through.

0:41:42 > 0:41:44Should be OK for Mead.

0:41:44 > 0:41:46Knocked on, that is another error.

0:41:46 > 0:41:48And that is play on.

0:41:48 > 0:41:49Six to go.

0:41:49 > 0:41:54Shaun Lunt, the old experienced hand, very quick to that.

0:41:54 > 0:41:55Here is Mose Masoe.

0:41:55 > 0:41:57Charges for the line.

0:41:57 > 0:42:00He stretches out, has he scored?

0:42:00 > 0:42:02Mose Masoe thinks he has.

0:42:02 > 0:42:05James Child confirms it.

0:42:05 > 0:42:15Well, Mose Masoe, a Grand Final winner with St Helens

0:42:16 > 0:42:17last year of course, was wrecked by injury

0:42:18 > 0:42:19with St George in the MRL.

0:42:19 > 0:42:20Here is Shaun Lunt again.

0:42:20 > 0:42:21And Mose Masoe.

0:42:21 > 0:42:27Shaun Lunt, his 300th career appearance tonight.

0:42:27 > 0:42:33Enjoying it I think as much as he ever did.

0:42:33 > 0:42:35Mose Masoe trying to get things going.

0:42:35 > 0:42:37Danny Tickle on debut.

0:42:37 > 0:42:39More good pressure here.

0:42:39 > 0:42:40And Lunt with a dummy!

0:42:40 > 0:42:44Lunt with a try.

0:42:44 > 0:42:54What a way to celebrate 300 games in a long and illustrious career.

0:42:55 > 0:43:00Here is Dagger again.

0:43:00 > 0:43:04Big future for Will Dagger, only 18 years of age.

0:43:04 > 0:43:06Already created one try tonight.

0:43:06 > 0:43:09Rovers at the moment are in easy street.

0:43:09 > 0:43:12Tickle with the off-load.

0:43:12 > 0:43:15And Shaun Lunt first to react, as he has been all night.

0:43:15 > 0:43:17Maguire now, directing operations.

0:43:17 > 0:43:20Dummies to go one way.

0:43:20 > 0:43:23It does find Tickle and Tickle will surely wrap up the points

0:43:23 > 0:43:25and Rovers' first win!

0:43:25 > 0:43:30Much travelled Danny Tickle on debut.

0:43:30 > 0:43:33James Child reckons it is a try.

0:43:33 > 0:43:34And I reckon he's right.

0:43:34 > 0:43:37And there is confirmation.

0:43:37 > 0:43:41Hull Kingston Rovers dominant.

0:43:41 > 0:43:48That's going to be a first win back in Super League.

0:43:48 > 0:43:53Looks like Catalan have taken two steps backwards,

0:43:53 > 0:43:55and a giant step forward, in running St Helens so close

0:43:55 > 0:43:57in the south of France.

0:43:57 > 0:44:03But tonight Steve McNamara could have no excuses.

0:44:03 > 0:44:09I'm pretty sure he won't make any either.

0:44:09 > 0:44:11Tierney.

0:44:11 > 0:44:14His opposite number Tim Sheens will be delighted with what he seen.

0:44:14 > 0:44:18This is a rare opportunity for the Dragons.

0:44:18 > 0:44:21Bird with the break and it looks like Mead will have the legs.

0:44:21 > 0:44:26David Mead, the Papau New Guinea star, will go 40 yards to score.

0:44:26 > 0:44:28It is too little, too late.

0:44:28 > 0:44:38But they have points on the board.

0:44:39 > 0:44:45They would love to finish it in fine fashion, I'm sure.

0:44:45 > 0:44:49It has been a really good, professional performance.

0:44:49 > 0:44:53To be able to bring the likes of Danny Tickle and Mose Masoe

0:44:53 > 0:44:57and Shaun Lunt off the bench has been crucial.

0:44:57 > 0:44:59Here is Atkin with a drop goal.

0:44:59 > 0:45:01Last minute of the game.

0:45:01 > 0:45:05That is that.

0:45:05 > 0:45:06A dominant Hull Kingston Rovers and a disastrous display

0:45:06 > 0:45:08for the Catalan Dragons.

0:45:08 > 0:45:12Three defeats on the trot but Rovers, off and running.

0:45:12 > 0:45:13Three defeats on the trot but Rovers, off and running.

0:45:13 > 0:45:17Was it a relief for you guys as well to get off the mark?

0:45:17 > 0:45:20I don't think it is relief, it is just getting rid of pressure.

0:45:20 > 0:45:23Particularly with us being the site that has come back up

0:45:23 > 0:45:24from the championship.

0:45:24 > 0:45:26If we had lost that game then more questions asked,

0:45:26 > 0:45:28when is your first win going to come.

0:45:28 > 0:45:31And I think the performance we had against Leeds was a lot better

0:45:31 > 0:45:32than the one against Wakefield.

0:45:32 > 0:45:35It was great just to get the win against Catalans.

0:45:35 > 0:45:36Two points in the bank.

0:45:36 > 0:45:37And now looking forward to Salford.

0:45:37 > 0:45:40It wasn't a classic game by any stretch of the imagination.

0:45:40 > 0:45:43But was Tim particularly pleased with how KL managed the second half,

0:45:43 > 0:45:44having got that big lead?

0:45:44 > 0:45:45I think so.

0:45:45 > 0:45:48You can say Hull KR have been guilty of squandering leads before

0:45:48 > 0:45:50in the Super League two years ago.

0:45:50 > 0:45:53Not under Tim, Tim is a very smart coach, they have got

0:45:53 > 0:45:54different half-backs now.

0:45:54 > 0:45:56And to go in with that big half-time lead, they just

0:45:56 > 0:45:58played the right football.

0:45:58 > 0:46:00They defended Catalan's half of the game in the second half

0:46:00 > 0:46:02and just managed the game perfectly to win it.

0:46:02 > 0:46:04Steve McNamara, he did go for his team.

0:46:04 > 0:46:07There was no beating around the bush that it was not an acceptable

0:46:07 > 0:46:08performance from him.

0:46:08 > 0:46:10Would you be worried about Catalan?

0:46:10 > 0:46:12I am worried.

0:46:12 > 0:46:13I think they're way off.

0:46:13 > 0:46:15I think fundamentally they have got big issues.

0:46:15 > 0:46:18When they have experienced what they went through last year

0:46:18 > 0:46:20and had to play for their survival and all the pressure

0:46:20 > 0:46:23that came with that.

0:46:23 > 0:46:26To then roll into the start of a new season like that,

0:46:26 > 0:46:27pretty much the same attitude.

0:46:27 > 0:46:30I think they're going to struggle, I really do.

0:46:30 > 0:46:32I do not see anything from not necessarily the players,

0:46:32 > 0:46:35in terms of skill, I just think to making the point of difference,

0:46:35 > 0:46:43to change, or the attitude, I just don't see it.

0:46:43 > 0:46:46It is almost like a lack of urgency there when you watch them play.

0:46:46 > 0:46:48I know they're making some fundamental mistakes.

0:46:48 > 0:46:50I think that is the right word.

0:46:50 > 0:46:52And they can be changed, they can be corrected.

0:46:52 > 0:46:54But I just don't see a sense of urgency at

0:46:54 > 0:46:56the moment within that side.

0:46:56 > 0:46:58You would expect, from the back of last year, it is not

0:46:58 > 0:47:00like it is a surprise of loss of form.

0:47:00 > 0:47:03It is just the attitude has gone.

0:47:03 > 0:47:05I'm surprised, I was unfortunate enough to play

0:47:05 > 0:47:06in the million pound game.

0:47:06 > 0:47:08That game is horrific.

0:47:08 > 0:47:10I would never want to experience that ever again.

0:47:10 > 0:47:13I sure those players who played for Catalans who were in it,

0:47:13 > 0:47:16you would think they would come out with that sense of, we do not

0:47:16 > 0:47:18want to be in this game.

0:47:18 > 0:47:19But you don't see it.

0:47:19 > 0:47:22And for you guys, refocus for next week, how important to just keep

0:47:22 > 0:47:23building on those performances?

0:47:23 > 0:47:25I think for us it is about our performances.

0:47:25 > 0:47:27We played a little bit better each week.

0:47:27 > 0:47:29Some of the players have not played Super League before.

0:47:29 > 0:47:31They are getting used to playing it.

0:47:31 > 0:47:34We have strength in our squad and I think you will see us come

0:47:34 > 0:47:37good around Easter as well because I think we have

0:47:37 > 0:47:38quite a large squad.

0:47:38 > 0:47:41And we'll be able to take advantage of some sides that don't have quite

0:47:41 > 0:47:43as big a squad as we have.

0:47:43 > 0:47:45So Rovers and Warrington are off the mark and this

0:47:45 > 0:47:48is where it has left them in the BetFred Super League table.

0:47:48 > 0:47:52Those wins move Warrington and Hull KR out of the bottom four and leave

0:47:52 > 0:47:55Salford and Catalan as the only teams without a point on the board.

0:47:55 > 0:47:57All 12 teams are back in Super League action

0:47:57 > 0:48:01for Round 3 this weekend.

0:48:01 > 0:48:03That is it for now.

0:48:03 > 0:48:05My thanks to Jamie and to Richard for joining us.

0:48:05 > 0:48:07We will see you again next week.

0:48:07 > 0:48:10But from all of us here, goodbye.
