:00:35. > :00:41.Welcome to Germany's capital city, Berlin, for the European swimming

:00:42. > :00:44.Championships. In 2012 when Team GB was riding the crest of a wave

:00:45. > :00:48.swimming was the one sport that underperformed. At last year 's

:00:49. > :00:52.World Championships we barely made a splash, bringing home just one

:00:53. > :00:57.bronze medal. British women was dead in the water, we had sunk without

:00:58. > :01:00.trace, something had to change. For the British swimmers competing at

:01:01. > :01:06.last months Commonwealth Games it really was case of sink or swim.

:01:07. > :01:12.COMMENTATOR: Ross Murdoch is going to take the gold for Scotland, and

:01:13. > :01:19.utterly brilliant swim, can you believe it? Look at that, he is just

:01:20. > :01:24.realising what he has done. Halsall looks like she is going to get it,

:01:25. > :01:30.another Commonwealth record. It is called again for Fran Halsall. A

:01:31. > :01:36.great swim from Chris Walker-Hebborn. Hannah Miley wins

:01:37. > :01:47.gold for Scotland, brilliant swim from her. Can add PC win the gold? I

:01:48. > :01:57.think he is going to, yes he does. -- Adam Peaty. Jazz Carlin gets gold

:01:58. > :02:07.for Wales, what a brilliant swim it was. That is an enormous thing to

:02:08. > :02:11.do. Gold. Then proud, England. Nobody expected anybody other than

:02:12. > :02:22.Australia to top the medal table at the Commonwealth Games. Just look at

:02:23. > :02:27.the home nations. Combines they had 15 gold medals. Only four behind

:02:28. > :02:34.Australia, how good sign is this for British swimming? Fantastic, in

:02:35. > :02:37.world terms USA is the powerhouse, but below that Australia is probably

:02:38. > :02:46.the second best nation in the world. For GB, the team as a whole, running

:02:47. > :02:50.close, it was exciting. Without Australia and China, some of the big

:02:51. > :02:53.hitters, how big is the opposition at the Europeans? Good, in world

:02:54. > :02:59.terms if you look at the best teams in the world, USA, Australia, China,

:03:00. > :03:03.Japan, Brazil. With certain swimmers in certain events there are other

:03:04. > :03:06.countries. European swimming has been strong across the years,

:03:07. > :03:13.Germany, Italy, France, all have good swimmers. Reading between the

:03:14. > :03:17.lines, grasping at straws, Team GB could do very well here. They should

:03:18. > :03:22.do very well. It was a huge surprise, not huge, but look two

:03:23. > :03:25.years ago to the Olympic Games as last year the World Championships

:03:26. > :03:29.with one bronze medal, it was not looking very good. To coming here

:03:30. > :03:33.after the Commonwealth Games I am optimistic. They will have

:03:34. > :03:38.confidence. Absolutely. It is amazing how in two years they can

:03:39. > :03:43.make a huge difference. A lot of the swimmers are very young, 18, 20, in

:03:44. > :03:47.another two years time for the Olympics they will be towards their

:03:48. > :03:52.prime. Not all of the big hitters are here, why not? Some people like

:03:53. > :03:58.Hannah Miley, Michael Jamieson, Siobhan Marie O'Connor, they looked

:03:59. > :04:02.at the Commonwealth Games, that was the major meat for the summer. I

:04:03. > :04:06.would have said you are racing, in shape, just come here. For those

:04:07. > :04:10.swimmers within their programme, they said that is the focus for the

:04:11. > :04:16.summer, they will take it easy. It is a lot of hard work on your mind

:04:17. > :04:28.and body going into the Olympics. That get cracking with the men's 400

:04:29. > :04:32.meter freestyle. -- let's get cracking. COMMENTATOR: We start with

:04:33. > :04:40.the men's 400 meter freestyle. Steven Milne is arguably the

:04:41. > :04:51.favourite. The swimmers just coming out. A massive opportunity for

:04:52. > :04:56.Lelliott. Ahead of the local favourite who finished ninth in the

:04:57. > :05:01.heat. It really is wide open for the rest of the field. They will be

:05:02. > :05:02.thinking, this is my big opportunity to take a gold medal at the major

:05:03. > :05:18.games. Who got the best start? Closest to

:05:19. > :05:33.us, Lelliott, good start from him but over on the far side, well away,

:05:34. > :05:42.it looks like Stjepjanovic doing well. Going out too hard on that

:05:43. > :05:49.first 50. Use holding onto that lead. They will be looking to reel

:05:50. > :05:57.him in. Only 150 metres to go for the Serb to hold on. His tactic is

:05:58. > :06:04.to go out like a hair on the greyhound track. Everybody has a

:06:05. > :06:08.chance, I have to take the raids on. His last 50 metres is going to be in

:06:09. > :06:14.a world of pain and it will be down to the swimmers who have tasted

:06:15. > :06:22.better. Stephen Milne is in one of those centre lanes. A little bit of

:06:23. > :06:26.the pace. He will need to step up to get in with the medal. The other

:06:27. > :06:33.British swimmers still holding onto second place. Still over two seconds

:06:34. > :06:39.lead for the Serbian. At the moment does not look like anybody will be

:06:40. > :06:43.able to reel him in. He was born in Abu Dhabi but chose to swim for

:06:44. > :06:47.Serbia because that is where his parents were from. He looks like he

:06:48. > :06:53.might win the first medal of the meat for Serbia. This is where you

:06:54. > :07:02.feel you have an elephant on your back. Making a big move. The

:07:03. > :07:10.Italians have a great history of distance freestyle swimming. Less

:07:11. > :07:18.than 25 metres to go and the Serbian is hanging on, it is tight with five

:07:19. > :07:31.metres. What a swim to take gold. A superb Bronze for Lelliott.

:07:32. > :07:36.Stjepanovic really took that race on. You would not have thought

:07:37. > :07:43.coming into the meat that Lelliott would be walking out of here with a

:07:44. > :07:49.bronze medal. It is the teenager from Bath who will be on the medal

:07:50. > :07:53.roster later. Unbelievable. I was not expecting that. I knew I could

:07:54. > :07:59.do better from this morning. After I talked to my coach, he said I was

:08:00. > :08:02.going to hard down the first 200. I tried to work the arms more and

:08:03. > :08:07.focus on the legs, it really paid off. First senior medal for him, how

:08:08. > :08:14.much confidence will it give Lelliott? He came sixth in the 1600

:08:15. > :08:18.freestyle. A shorter distance, but a mature swim on the outside of the

:08:19. > :08:23.pool, could not see anyone else and stuck to his own race plan. 19 years

:08:24. > :08:29.of age with two years to go until the Olympics. Not a great result for

:08:30. > :08:34.Stephen Milne. Sometimes it is about just making the final. He went in

:08:35. > :08:38.fastest. We thought he had a big shout. He had a lot of big names

:08:39. > :08:44.around him. A lot of people save stuff for the final. Different race

:08:45. > :08:50.tactics can throw you. He stuck to his own race. Through James Guy into

:08:51. > :08:54.the mix, he got a bronze medal at the Commonwealth Games for England.

:08:55. > :09:00.His time would have won that race. It is really exciting times. Cue

:09:01. > :09:04.James Guy throwing things at the telly. The women's 100 metre

:09:05. > :09:11.individual medley. Anna Miley gave the home crowd plenty to shout

:09:12. > :09:16.about. She was pushed by Eddie Wilmot. It looks like it will be

:09:17. > :09:23.Anna Miley, she is streaking away, this is a brilliant swim, Hannah

:09:24. > :09:30.Miley wins gold for Scotland. Brilliant swim for Hannah Miley. No

:09:31. > :09:34.Hannah Miley at the European Championships. It gives a new Wilmot

:09:35. > :09:45.the chance to step out from under her shadow. -- gives Amy Wilmott.

:09:46. > :09:53.What an extraordinary swimmer Katinka Hosszu is, of Hungary.

:09:54. > :10:00.Belmonte in second place is a world medallist. She has been taken apart

:10:01. > :10:07.by horses at the 200 metre mark. -- taken apart by Katinka Hosszu. She

:10:08. > :10:12.is miles ahead of the field. Wonderful swimming. So far inside

:10:13. > :10:18.that European record. If there is a weakness to the medley it will be

:10:19. > :10:22.the breaststroke for her. I cannot see anyone challenging Katinka

:10:23. > :10:26.Hosszu. When she turns onto the freestyle she will be so strong. Amy

:10:27. > :10:30.Wilmott having a good breaststroke leg. Mireia Belmonte still going

:10:31. > :10:44.well. A new expect to see Amy Wilmott very

:10:45. > :10:50.strong in the closing stages of this 400 metre medley. She has moved into

:10:51. > :10:54.third place but it is Katinka Hosszu who is just powering through. No

:10:55. > :10:58.surprise, the amount of training and racing this girl does it is no

:10:59. > :11:03.surprise to see her really dominating this race. Belmonte and

:11:04. > :11:07.Amy Wilmott will not know what is going on here, they will think they

:11:08. > :11:11.are having a shocking performance but that is not the case, it is

:11:12. > :11:16.Katinka Hosszu who is putting together the best 400 metre medley

:11:17. > :11:22.of her life here. She will turn in the scary time here of 3:26, she has

:11:23. > :11:29.every chance of breaking the European record. The big question is

:11:30. > :11:34.can Amy Wilmott with 100 meters to go hold it together for a medal? She

:11:35. > :11:40.taken Maria Belmonte. What a battle between the two freestylers. A new

:11:41. > :11:49.Wilmot very good, but Mireia Belmonte is a silver medallist. Amy

:11:50. > :11:55.Wilmott could not get past Hannah Miley at the Commonwealth Games,

:11:56. > :11:59.will she have any luck here? This is like a time trial swim for Katinka

:12:00. > :12:03.Hosszu, it is her own European record, her own best time she is

:12:04. > :12:08.aiming to beat. Extraordinary swimming from the iron Lady. The

:12:09. > :12:13.first of goodness knows how many races she is doing at these

:12:14. > :12:18.championships. She is just holding onto that European record pace. That

:12:19. > :12:22.line is moving swiftly, will she be able to hang on? She is outside her

:12:23. > :12:28.European record. What time will it be? What a swim for Katinka Hosszu

:12:29. > :12:39.out on her own. Belmonte got in there for second place with a silver

:12:40. > :12:48.medal. Another medal for Britain and Wilmott. Hats off to Katinka Hosszu,

:12:49. > :12:54.she is one tough lady. We will see her and Mireia Belmonte many times

:12:55. > :12:58.this week. Congratulations to Wilmott, coached by Lisa Bates. What

:12:59. > :13:09.a season she has had, really turned it around this year. Really happy

:13:10. > :13:12.with that. I thought I could try and catch Belmonte but she was a little

:13:13. > :13:14.bit stronger than me. I am happy with that only two weeks after the

:13:15. > :13:26.Commonwealth. Day two at the European swimming

:13:27. > :13:27.Championships and it is time to see a Commonwealth Games hero in action.

:13:28. > :13:41.Ben Proud goes in the 1500 metres Then

:13:42. > :13:46.Ben Proud goes in the 1500 metres fly. He is such an exciting

:13:47. > :13:50.prospect, what makes him so good? The interesting thing is in real

:13:51. > :13:53.terms he only really started training three years ago. He has

:13:54. > :13:57.swum before but only been in a proper programme for three years. He

:13:58. > :14:02.still has the worlds fastest time, that time would have won that race.

:14:03. > :14:11.He will be disappointed he did not do a little bit better but it is the

:14:12. > :14:17.experience. He has got fast twitch. He has got rich? There are slow

:14:18. > :14:24.twitch fibres for long distance swimmers, he is a sprinter, fast

:14:25. > :14:32.twitch fibres. This is the beginning of his story. Only 19 years of age.

:14:33. > :14:38.Adam Barrett as well, only .2 behind Ben Proud, that was his best time.

:14:39. > :14:42.Ben Proud has a bright future, if he continues training hard in the setup

:14:43. > :14:47.he is in I expect huge things from that guy. Things can only get

:14:48. > :14:52.better. We will get royalties from M people after this.

:14:53. > :15:02.He qualified second-fastest for this, but can he beat the 2011 world

:15:03. > :15:14.champion Jeremy? COMMENTATOR: Ben Proud just 19 years of age. These

:15:15. > :15:21.are some world-class swimmers going in this 50 metres butterfly, not to

:15:22. > :15:27.mention Florent Manaudou. Two men in the centre of the pool, in lane five

:15:28. > :15:34.in pink and black trunks, getting a fantastic start. Great speed. Now it

:15:35. > :15:46.is about the other swimmers trying to chase him down. A fantastic start

:15:47. > :15:55.from him. Looking good, but... The windows to Manaudou. Eight the gold

:15:56. > :16:04.medal. Florent Manaudou was leading the race up until one stroke to Gulf

:16:05. > :16:08.-- one stroke to go. Florent Manaudou got such a great start.

:16:09. > :16:11.Look at the streamlining under the water. Absolutely beautiful

:16:12. > :16:19.swimming. He is a big match player, this chap. He did not quite get his

:16:20. > :16:24.finish. He let the Belarussian get back in but Ben Proud has got to be

:16:25. > :16:33.so happy. And a tie for bronze between Ben Proud Andriy Govorov.

:16:34. > :16:37.Four men on the podium. Ben Proud is adding to his medal collection. If

:16:38. > :16:41.he put them together all at once, he would fall over? He such an exciting

:16:42. > :16:45.prospect. After the Commonwealth Games gold medal, and his time in

:16:46. > :16:49.the 55, it would have won the race, the fastest time in the world. I'm

:16:50. > :16:53.so excited because he has only really been swimming for three

:16:54. > :16:59.years. Only been training properly, I mean. He is down in Plymouth,

:17:00. > :17:06.training and seems to be getting a reading right. Florent Manaudou is a

:17:07. > :17:11.unit. He is a strong lad, Olympic champion at the 50 free. It is a big

:17:12. > :17:17.field. He can go faster. But he did well. To do all of that in such a

:17:18. > :17:21.short time, to announce himself on the senior stage, credit to him and

:17:22. > :17:25.his trainer and his team. If you know you are capable of a certain

:17:26. > :17:29.time, what stops you delivering it always? If I knew the answer, I

:17:30. > :17:34.would still be in there. It is one of those things, on a given day,

:17:35. > :17:38.when the gun goes off, whenever it is, it is being at your best

:17:39. > :17:42.consistently and delivering. After having the Commonwealth Games four

:17:43. > :17:46.weeks ago, trying to go back into training, how many weights do you

:17:47. > :17:49.do, how much work in the water, trying to get it right is a fine

:17:50. > :17:54.line, to peak twice but he has done a good job and I will let him off.

:17:55. > :17:58.Congratulations to Ben Proud. Let's turn our attention to the men's 100

:17:59. > :18:02.meter backstroke and we have the Commonwealth Games champion in this,

:18:03. > :18:06.Chris Walker-Hebborn, he qualified second fastest but if you want cops

:18:07. > :18:08.what -- top spot in this one, he's going to have to see of the 2011

:18:09. > :18:23.world champion, Jeremy Stravius. COMMENTATOR: We are hoping to see

:18:24. > :18:27.the calm, confident, cool Chris Walker-Hebborn we saw at the

:18:28. > :18:31.Commonwealth Games. He will be up against Jeremy Stravius of France,

:18:32. > :18:37.who anchored the freestyle team to a gold medal last night.

:18:38. > :18:46.As they get underway, a good start from Jeremy Stravius, really pulled

:18:47. > :18:49.himself high out of the water but Christian Diener Germany in lane

:18:50. > :18:56.two, close to us, has got away very fast as well. Great start from him.

:18:57. > :18:59.He is really turning over. You can see the difference in his stroke

:19:00. > :19:03.rate between the other swimmers. Whether he will be able to keep that

:19:04. > :19:09.up over 100 metres remains to be seen. Christian Diener turns first

:19:10. > :19:13.ahead of Jeremy Stravius. Where is Chris Walker-Hebborn? He has got to

:19:14. > :19:16.dig deep. I would have liked to have seen a bit faster but this is where

:19:17. > :19:21.he has dabbed the confidence. He is working his way back into the peel.

:19:22. > :19:25.He has every chance. Great swimming from Walker-Hebborn, coming through

:19:26. > :19:30.the field. He is against Jeremy Stravius. Who will have the longest

:19:31. > :19:38.arms? Walker-Hebborn eases past, what a swim. Gold medal, 53.32. That

:19:39. > :19:40.will feel good. You don't have too many better seasons than winning

:19:41. > :19:44.gold at the Commonwealth Games and the European champ in chips. He has

:19:45. > :19:45.been in the wilderness for a few years but has done the business. I

:19:46. > :19:58.am made up for him. -- European Championships. I'm

:19:59. > :20:03.really happy with that. It has been a long season. Still got quite a few

:20:04. > :20:07.races to go. That tops it off for me. I can kind of enjoy it now. I

:20:08. > :20:17.can get on with it. The British team supporting him,

:20:18. > :20:21.great team spirit in the camp. So many swimmers picking up medals, so

:20:22. > :20:26.the atmosphere must us be fantastic at the team hotel. It is great to

:20:27. > :20:29.see. He has turned it around. He could have caved in to just being

:20:30. > :20:32.known as the person who could not quite deliver at major

:20:33. > :20:48.championships, but this year, Chris Walker-Hebborn has turned it around.

:20:49. > :21:27.STUDIO: Chris, congratulations, how impressive was that? It is the

:21:28. > :21:30.nominal, to win the Commonwealth Games and then go back to back in

:21:31. > :21:35.the Europeans against another world-class field. It is one of

:21:36. > :21:37.those things about going from championship to championship,

:21:38. > :21:44.consistency. That will do his team and him so much confidence. He has

:21:45. > :21:48.got to which, hasn't he? A lot of twit. I love seeing sprinters do

:21:49. > :21:53.something because historically we have been known as a nation of

:21:54. > :21:57.middle and long distance swimmers. How fantastic to get the first

:21:58. > :22:04.golfer Team GB? I don't want to jinx it but could we start a gold rush.

:22:05. > :22:07.Next up, Fran Halsall in the 50 meter fly.

:22:08. > :22:15.COMMENTATOR: Sarah Sjostrom in the centre of the pool, the world

:22:16. > :22:20.record-holder. Fran Halsall is going to be one of the top competitors.

:22:21. > :22:24.Are one of the top four in the world, going into the 50 metres

:22:25. > :22:26.butterfly. The question is, can Fran Halsall keep it going? Can she get

:22:27. > :22:40.another medal? Fantastic start from Jeanette

:22:41. > :22:45.Ottesen. She really made the most of the underwater work. Fran Halsall in

:22:46. > :22:49.the blue hat, you can see, three lanes out, going well. Inge Dekker

:22:50. > :22:55.moving through the water well but Sarah Sjostrom is starting to ease

:22:56. > :23:02.past Annette Alderson. Head town into the water. -- Jeanette Ottesen.

:23:03. > :23:07.You would not believe she had done the 100 free just before. Fran

:23:08. > :23:11.Halsall takes bronze. Sarah Sjostrom, under 25 seconds. It

:23:12. > :23:19.looked like she did not breathe at all. 24.98 and the gold medal. Fran

:23:20. > :23:25.Halsall with another bronze medal for Great Britain. It is a tough

:23:26. > :23:29.race, five of the fastest girls out there were in that race. It is a

:23:30. > :23:34.totally different situation to what I was in in the Commonwealth Games.

:23:35. > :23:37.I was only one point four I did there. Hopefully I can maintain that

:23:38. > :23:42.through the week and do a good 50 free towards the end of it. How

:23:43. > :23:47.happy will she be with that? The bottom line is, coming into this

:23:48. > :23:51.race, Sarah Sjostrom broke the world record by 0.5 seconds and she has

:23:52. > :23:57.got another 0.5 seconds faster. She is another level. She is that good.

:23:58. > :24:01.She is in a league of her own in a sense. So Fran putting another medal

:24:02. > :24:05.in the bag, she will be pleased. It is a long summer for some of these

:24:06. > :24:08.swimmers. The best thing about the British athletes coming here is

:24:09. > :24:12.seeing how they performed at the Commonwealth Games and then three

:24:13. > :24:15.weeks later. Some of them will get faster, they will look at their

:24:16. > :24:18.programme coming into major championships in the future and

:24:19. > :24:27.change their programme coming in the future and change their programme

:24:28. > :24:29.coming into of the Commonwealth Games, Ross Murdoch, was more

:24:30. > :24:32.surprised than anyone that he got the gold and he is up next in the

:24:33. > :24:35.100 metres breast broke with Adam Peaty. This is a great chance for

:24:36. > :24:37.Team GB to get a gold. They were not big shocks because they have been

:24:38. > :24:40.coming up on the world scene but when it came to the Commonwealth

:24:41. > :24:45.Games, they took the world by storm, Adam Peaty beating Cameron van der

:24:46. > :24:49.Burgh and Christian Sprenger, arguably the two best breast broke

:24:50. > :24:52.through Ms in the world. And then Ross Murdoch came out of Michael

:24:53. > :24:57.Jamieson's shadow. They are exciting, very young and they have a

:24:58. > :24:58.lot more to give. We have brilliant British breast stroke swimmers. That

:24:59. > :25:16.was a mouthful! COMMENTATOR: The two British

:25:17. > :25:26.swimmers are in the centre of people. -- of the pool. Great start

:25:27. > :25:34.coming from Adam Peaty. And Ross Murdoch. But also, in the early

:25:35. > :25:39.stages, it is the Frenchman who got away well. The power of Adam Peaty,

:25:40. > :25:42.lifting himself high out of the water. Ross Murdoch with a slightly

:25:43. > :25:46.different stroke, smoother. Adam Peaty finishes strongly but Deirdre

:25:47. > :25:49.is to tennis, the Lithuanian, out fast as well. -- Airdrie is to

:25:50. > :25:56.tennis. He knows what it is all about. Adam

:25:57. > :25:59.Peaty will have to work here. Maybe he is holding something back because

:26:00. > :26:04.he seems to be turning it on now, going a bit more to the arms,

:26:05. > :26:09.working them. Can he and Ross Murdoch pull through on the second

:26:10. > :26:12.leg? What a battle unfolding in the middle. Ross Murdoch, try to hold

:26:13. > :26:16.off Adam Peaty. The Lithuanian dropping off and Adam Peaty is

:26:17. > :26:21.powering through in the centre of the pool, like he did in Glasgow.

:26:22. > :26:27.Lighting to the finish, but a gold medal nonetheless for Adam Peaty and

:26:28. > :26:31.Ross Murdoch gets a silver. The Lithuanian was out so quickly and

:26:32. > :26:36.gets a bronze. So made up for Adam Peaty, what a season, only just

:26:37. > :26:45.turned 19 as well. 58.96, the winning time. Absolutely amazing,

:26:46. > :26:49.coming into the start of the season, I did not have that many objectives.

:26:50. > :26:52.The Commonwealth Games was the main aim, so to carry it over to the

:26:53. > :26:57.Europeans and perform that well, last night as well, amazing. It is

:26:58. > :27:00.great for me to come here, my first European Championships and I put

:27:01. > :27:05.myself in a position to get a medal and delivered. So, we really are

:27:06. > :27:11.very spoilt for men's brushstrokes swimming in Britain at the moment.

:27:12. > :27:17.-- breaststroke. These two are just 19 and 20. No reason to think we

:27:18. > :27:25.won't be watching these guys swim and enjoying it for a few more

:27:26. > :27:29.years. He still looks 11th. He has got the body of a wet left about his

:27:30. > :27:37.face looks about 11. What a summer this guy has had. STUDIO: A British

:27:38. > :27:42.one-two and a phenomenal finish by Adam Peaty. Could this be going any

:27:43. > :27:48.better? I have not seen an evening where we have done a one-two in the

:27:49. > :27:52.Europeans ever, or for a long-time. If you watch the way he swims the

:27:53. > :27:55.race, he sits back down the first length, they are all in a line and

:27:56. > :27:59.then he brings himself through. It shows you that he has his own plan

:28:00. > :28:02.and he has such confident at the moment. A lot of other people would

:28:03. > :28:07.try to go with other swimmers but he does his own race. Is that something

:28:08. > :28:10.you get from competing more often? Absolutely, the more you race at

:28:11. > :28:13.this level, the more confidence you become. You have got the knowledge

:28:14. > :28:20.on the blocks to know you can do your own race and not get carried

:28:21. > :28:23.away by other people. Going back to the home programme, because we have

:28:24. > :28:25.these two, Jamieson, Willis, every race they have got at home is like a

:28:26. > :28:28.World Championship because they have got the best in the world around

:28:29. > :28:32.them. They are pushing themselves to another level every time. I can feel

:28:33. > :28:35.you getting very proud. Young years, walking around the poolside

:28:36. > :28:40.now, and I know a lot of people because I was in the sport for 25

:28:41. > :28:44.years at a senior level, people ask me how exciting it is because every

:28:45. > :28:47.session, we have got a name and an opportunity. And those guys are

:28:48. > :28:51.delivering. It is easy going in number one but you have to come out

:28:52. > :28:55.the same. Seeing Adam Peaty do that is exciting and makes me feel proud.

:28:56. > :28:59.Hopefully Lizzie Simmonds can get caught up with it because she goes

:29:00. > :29:04.in the 200 meter backstroke now. By her own admission, she has has had a

:29:05. > :29:05.couple of years but she qualified second fastest for this. Time for

:29:06. > :29:22.the final. Commentator you need to watch out

:29:23. > :29:27.for Duane da Rocha Marce and Simona Baumrtova of the Czech Republic. The

:29:28. > :29:31.final is underway, and in Lane 5, we will be watching for Lizzie

:29:32. > :29:35.Simmonds. What a fantastic start, and also a good start from Simona

:29:36. > :29:40.Baumrtova of the Czech Republic. Both of them have left Duane da

:29:41. > :29:43.Rocha Marce way behind Angie is having to fight to come through. We

:29:44. > :29:49.could not have asked for a better start from Lizzie Simmonds. Now she

:29:50. > :29:53.needs to put the race together. Simona Baumrtova leading at the 50

:29:54. > :29:56.metre mark. She is a 100 metres specialist so no surprise she will

:29:57. > :30:01.take the race on but will she be able to hold on in the closing

:30:02. > :30:06.stages? She is great on the short course, Simona Baumrtova, ten medals

:30:07. > :30:10.and the European Short course. The long format might start to tell.

:30:11. > :30:13.Lizzie Simmonds is in a good place with Jenny Mensing, getting in the

:30:14. > :30:18.mix but you don't want to lose touch too much. I was getting nervous,

:30:19. > :30:21.telling her not to go out too fast but now I am saying, come on,

:30:22. > :30:25.Lizzie, you have to get with it, stay with them all the way and don't

:30:26. > :30:39.watch lane for too much. Swim your own race. -- Lane four. Baumrtova is

:30:40. > :30:42.leading. The Burling goal -- the Burling girl swimming in front of

:30:43. > :31:04.her home crowd. -- Berlin. Simmons has given herself every

:31:05. > :31:08.chance at 150. Fabulous underwater work from Lizzie Simmonds. There you

:31:09. > :31:15.go, it is not all about the swimming, the turns have to be

:31:16. > :31:19.fantastic as well. The work she has been doing with Dave McNulty in Bath

:31:20. > :31:24.is paying off. She could win this. What a swim from Lizzie Simmonds. A

:31:25. > :31:41.beautiful turn has put her in contention. But will Marce get the

:31:42. > :31:46.touch? DA Rocha Marce gets the gold medal. She looked very composed

:31:47. > :31:50.there, Lizzie Simmonds. Another medal for Great Britain, very close

:31:51. > :31:55.to gold. I am sure Lewsey will be happy to be on the podium. A little

:31:56. > :32:00.disappointed not to have got the gold, I tried a tactically different

:32:01. > :32:03.race. It backfired because they swam a similar type of race, thought

:32:04. > :32:07.other people would be out faster than me. It is a good learning

:32:08. > :32:12.experience and I am pleased to be back on the podium. That was

:32:13. > :32:18.amazing, she was nearly not in it, then she nearly won it. For 150

:32:19. > :32:22.amazing, she was nearly not in it, were not in the race then came back

:32:23. > :32:27.in the last 50 metres. It is about doing your own race plan. The last

:32:28. > :32:32.turn she did nearly 50 metres underwater. She stayed under and

:32:33. > :32:35.came back, brilliant. Incredible to see because she popped up after

:32:36. > :32:40.everybody else and when she did she was ahead, it was like, when will

:32:41. > :32:45.she surface? They will train batch so much in the training room. You

:32:46. > :32:49.can do 50 metres on every wall underneath the water, that is XT

:32:50. > :32:53.metres that can be done underwater. Coming off the last war, your legs

:32:54. > :33:02.and arms are burning, your lungs, stay underwater, that is hard. -- 60

:33:03. > :33:06.metres. She has shown real strength of character. Look at any athlete,

:33:07. > :33:09.there is no bible for an athlete, this is the training pattern you

:33:10. > :33:22.follow, to get the best out of yourself. She is in Bath, should one

:33:23. > :33:35.Maria O'Connor, Chris Walker -- Chris Walker-Hebborn. We have the

:33:36. > :33:37.mixed four X 100 meter relay. Italy were the fastest qualifiers, in the

:33:38. > :33:51.centre of the pool. COMMENTATOR: Three out of the eight

:33:52. > :33:57.going on in the backstroke. It makes for a very strange race. Such a

:33:58. > :34:01.massive mix. You can see the lead that the men get over the women.

:34:02. > :34:08.Having to dive into that kind of wave and wash and try to claw it

:34:09. > :34:14.back. We will see how it unfolds. In the early stages four men leading

:34:15. > :34:25.the way. It is Russia just ahead of Great Britain's Chris

:34:26. > :34:30.Walker-Hebborn. Chris Walker-Hebborn in the blue hat in the centre of the

:34:31. > :34:35.pool starting to come through. Morris of starting to fight back.

:34:36. > :34:42.Chris Walker-Hebborn starting to come through. Onto the breaststroke

:34:43. > :34:48.leg it is Adam Peaty who will be going in the water. For Great

:34:49. > :34:51.Britain. What a start, what an amazing start from Adam Peaty,

:34:52. > :34:57.fantastic performance from him there. I have not seen too many of

:34:58. > :35:02.these mixed medley relays, but it cannot harm being out in front. He

:35:03. > :35:12.is going very well, Adam Peaty. He is up against Italy in lane for.

:35:13. > :35:17.They have Pellegrini on the last leg. Fran Halsall would not mind a

:35:18. > :35:24.few metres advantage over Pellegrini. A male swimmer will be

:35:25. > :35:30.going up against Jemma Lowe on the butterfly leg. It is quite

:35:31. > :35:37.misleading how far he is ahead of the Russian swimmers, Italy have two

:35:38. > :35:43.female swimmers on the second half, same as Great Britain. Unlikely they

:35:44. > :35:48.will be able to get past, but is that lead going to be enough? What

:35:49. > :35:54.can the Russian do? It is Jemma Lowe, the Welsh swimmer who swam for

:35:55. > :35:59.them at the Commonwealth Games in the water on this 100 meter

:36:00. > :36:04.butterfly leg, she could not have asked for a better opportunity. Adam

:36:05. > :36:09.Peaty swam a fantastic breast stroke leg. Here come the Russians. Oh my

:36:10. > :36:18.god, this is where the mixed medley relay gets interesting. Jemma Lowe

:36:19. > :36:22.has got to get into the wall, it is all about what sort of finish the

:36:23. > :36:27.Russians will have here. They have every chance, Great Britain, of

:36:28. > :36:32.taking home the gold medal. This is where it hurts on butterfly, ten

:36:33. > :36:38.metres to go. Fran Halsall is no slouch, she will love this

:36:39. > :36:43.opportunity. A great takeover. Great Britain leading with 100 metres to

:36:44. > :36:50.go. 3.1 seconds clear of the Netherlands and 3.2 clear of the

:36:51. > :36:53.Dutch. No more male swimmers to go, certainly not the medal contenders,

:36:54. > :36:57.surely nobody can get close to Fran Halsall, she has swum an event here

:36:58. > :37:03.this evening, but she will have the legs to hang on. Great turn from

:37:04. > :37:08.her. I may have doubted the mixed medley relay, did not think it was

:37:09. > :37:11.up to much, but I have changed my opinion, what a fantastic

:37:12. > :37:17.performance from Great Britain coming down the last 50 metres with

:37:18. > :37:23.Fran Halsall, three of these four swimmers have gone to light. Superb

:37:24. > :37:27.anchor leg from Fran Halsall, she loves bringing the team home. She

:37:28. > :37:32.had an insurmountable lead from Jemma Lowe. Great Britain take the

:37:33. > :37:36.gold medal, mixed medley relay. Netherlands take silver and Russia

:37:37. > :37:42.in bronze medal position. That is the third gold medal of the night

:37:43. > :37:46.for Great Britain. We know it is a new event, but it is a world

:37:47. > :37:50.record, 3.44, no idea whether it is good or not because we have not seen

:37:51. > :37:55.too many of these races. It is a new event, but it is a world record for

:37:56. > :38:02.Great Britain. Previously held by Australia. It was set earlier this

:38:03. > :38:06.year in Perth. Two seconds quicker. It was so good, such a good relay to

:38:07. > :38:10.be part of, to going ahead and think all I have to do is maintain this,

:38:11. > :38:14.it was fantastic, credit to these guys for putting me in this

:38:15. > :38:22.position, it was really good fun. Can you put your finger on where it

:38:23. > :38:26.was one? -- won. This morning we met up, we knew we had something special

:38:27. > :38:31.come into this, we got giddy about it. All three of us had races this

:38:32. > :38:33.evening, to come back and do that again and get a medal and a record

:38:34. > :38:45.is more than we could ask for. Well done. Three of those four have

:38:46. > :38:48.already been on the podium, two have already heard the national anthem

:38:49. > :38:55.tonight. What an evening swimming for Great Britain. An unbelievable

:38:56. > :39:00.start of the European Championship. Team GB at the top of the table and

:39:01. > :39:05.running away with it, aren't there? When we look at the moment we have

:39:06. > :39:10.nine medals. I have never seen that before, I have been around for a

:39:11. > :39:15.long time, for 25 years. It is normally dominated by Germany, then

:39:16. > :39:18.France, Italy, Russia. To say we are there on top at the moment, only the

:39:19. > :39:22.moment, we have a lot of good swimmers to come also we could

:39:23. > :39:28.potentially be at the top of the medal table. Why is Team GB at the

:39:29. > :39:33.top of the table? It is a golden era, when we have good swimmers, it

:39:34. > :39:42.is whether you leave a legacy. I said there was a big hole, Jazz

:39:43. > :39:46.Carlin stepped into empty shoes. David Wilkie, Adrian Moorhouse,

:39:47. > :39:50.Duncan Goodhew, James Gibson, we still have good breaststroke is. We

:39:51. > :39:58.need good swimmers in certain events. -- good breaststroke

:39:59. > :40:03.swimmers. Is Team GB good enough to top the medal table on the world

:40:04. > :40:06.stage? In the Olympic Games, World Championships, America is the

:40:07. > :40:11.dominant force. Lucy Franklin, Michael Phelps, but then in any

:40:12. > :40:18.race, they are odds-on favourites to win. We have Ross Murdoch, Fran

:40:19. > :40:22.Halsall, Hannah Miley, Adam Peaty, they could potentially be Olympic

:40:23. > :40:25.champions. We have never had handfuls of swimmers that I have

:40:26. > :40:31.said could be potential Olympic champions. Surely performances like

:40:32. > :40:35.this make Team GB seem a force to be reckoned with. You will not write

:40:36. > :40:40.them off. Take Sarah Sjostrom, the world 's best swimmer at certain

:40:41. > :40:45.events at the moment. And I say that right? I am leaving the musical

:40:46. > :40:57.references to you. She is another level. Look at James Franks... The

:40:58. > :41:01.best in their events. Some events will be weaker than others. Some of

:41:02. > :41:05.the worlds best swimmers are here and we can consistently compete

:41:06. > :41:09.against them and beat them, when the rest of the world is in there, we

:41:10. > :41:13.can still do well. Plenty to be excited about in the short and

:41:14. > :41:17.long-term. Can Team GB top of the medal table at the end of the week?

:41:18. > :41:23.Potentially, yes, we have a lot of good swimmers to come. Adam Peaty

:41:24. > :41:27.and Fran Halsall go again. There are several swimmers not here, a lot of

:41:28. > :41:30.top swimmers are not here. If we put them in I can guarantee we would be

:41:31. > :41:34.top of the medal table in Europe, that is exciting. It gives the

:41:35. > :41:40.others who are here something to aim for. Something to think about. Two

:41:41. > :41:48.fantastic days of swimming and plenty more to come.

:41:49. > :41:55.We start date three with the 1500 meter freestyle final, it featured

:41:56. > :42:02.Stephen Milne and the bronze medallist from day one, J Liley at.

:42:03. > :42:11.Both were dust outside the medals, finishing fourth and fifth. It was

:42:12. > :42:15.won in European record time. There was no British interest in the first

:42:16. > :42:23.races on day three. In the men's 200 meter individual medley, Team GB

:42:24. > :42:51.against the Hungarian legend. The 200 individual medley final.

:42:52. > :42:59.Good butterfly swimmer. He will take that race out. Being challenged by

:43:00. > :43:00.the blur of Germany. In the lane closest to us. And Heinz of Germany

:43:01. > :43:22.as well. Keebler is taking it out on the fly.

:43:23. > :43:26.-- die blah stop Deibler. A beautiful view of the swimmers

:43:27. > :43:31.rolling their shoulders, heads perfectly still. Just the shoulders

:43:32. > :43:37.that are moving. Cseh starting to edge into the lead is now. Kicking

:43:38. > :43:42.into the wall. At the halfway point it is Cseh leading. Britain's

:43:43. > :43:48.Roberto Pavoni in 1's medal position at the halfway mark. What can he do

:43:49. > :43:52.on the breast stroke legs? Not his strongest. He is good at freestyle

:43:53. > :43:58.as well. Cseh in the centre of the pool. It is close. Come on, Pavoni,

:43:59. > :44:02.this is where you have to work it. Fantastic performance here, but it

:44:03. > :44:07.could be a four way split. Pavoni has to get himself in the mix. He

:44:08. > :44:17.has determining one of the top three spots. Get yourself at, Roberto

:44:18. > :44:23.Pavoni. It was Deibler who turned first for Germany, pursued by Cseh.

:44:24. > :44:30.Four swimmers in the race for three medals. Pavoni is digging deep but

:44:31. > :44:35.these medals could go absolutely anywhere at this point. Cseh

:44:36. > :44:39.fighting back, so is Deibler, who will get to the wall and get the

:44:40. > :44:44.touch? It is Cseh who takes gold medal for Hungary for the fifth

:44:45. > :44:49.straight time. The German second and a wonderful bronze medal for Roberto

:44:50. > :44:59.Pavoni. Fantastic breast stroke lead made the difference. -- leg. The

:45:00. > :45:05.European bronze medal well-deserved. Confirmation of a bronze medal for

:45:06. > :45:10.Pavoni. Cseh makes it five in a row and takes the gold. I am over the

:45:11. > :45:14.moon, it is my first medal at a senior competition, it is great to

:45:15. > :45:18.get up on the podium. I have seen a lot of guys do it from GB already

:45:19. > :45:22.this week and wanted to be one of them. Today was such a close race,

:45:23. > :45:29.when I finished, my first reaction was disappointment because I so how

:45:30. > :45:44.close I was to the goal. -- I saw. I am happy.

:45:45. > :45:51.It was so close in the end. Yes, any one of five of them could have won

:45:52. > :45:54.it. But he fought for every it and got there and almost took out Laszlo

:45:55. > :46:00.Cseh. Without Michael Phelps, you would have been one of the world's

:46:01. > :46:03.best swimmers. Laszlo Cseh has got buckets of international experience

:46:04. > :46:08.and Roberto Pavoni, not so much. When you are against someone like

:46:09. > :46:11.that, can it get into your head? Before you come up to the pool

:46:12. > :46:15.before the race, Laszlo Cseh has been around for a number of years

:46:16. > :46:18.and achieved great excess. He would have been looking at Laszlo Cseh,

:46:19. > :46:22.the way he was behaving and what he was doing, and walking out to

:46:23. > :46:25.poolside, would have been nervous. But that was the thing I was most

:46:26. > :46:30.impressed by. From the Commonwealth Games, to hear, Roberto Pavoni has

:46:31. > :46:35.got one second faster. He and his coach will go back before the next

:46:36. > :46:39.Championships, looking to do things differently. The exciting thing is,

:46:40. > :46:43.he knows he can be better with different preparation. Not a bad way

:46:44. > :46:44.to end the day, bronze medal for Roberto Pavoni, which wraps things

:46:45. > :46:57.up for day three of competition. In the first final today, Welsh

:46:58. > :47:01.woman Jazz Carlin is chasing her first European title. She got top

:47:02. > :47:15.spot in Glasgow but can she retain her golden glow in Berlin?

:47:16. > :47:22.COMMENTATOR: A big shout for a gold medal in this one with Jazz Carlin.

:47:23. > :47:31.She is fastest on paper. But that does not mean anything.

:47:32. > :47:38.So, the women's 800 meter freestyle final is underway. Jazz Carlin is in

:47:39. > :47:42.Lane 4, for Great Britain. The final is underway. Jazz Carlin is in

:47:43. > :47:45.reigning Commonwealth champion after that fantastic swimming Glasgow a

:47:46. > :47:50.few weeks ago. You can see her in the blue swimming cap, closest to us

:47:51. > :47:56.in the two yellow lanes, and one lane up from her, Mireia Belmonte

:47:57. > :48:00.Garcia of Spain. She has a huge programme of events. This is Jazz

:48:01. > :48:05.Carlin's first event of the Championships. But Mireia Belmonte

:48:06. > :48:11.Garcia has already picked up a medal in the five K, and is doing ten pool

:48:12. > :48:17.events at these championships. A different programme. She will be

:48:18. > :48:21.very tough to beat. Easier to talk about the events they are not doing

:48:22. > :48:25.rather than the ones they are. They are doing the majority of the

:48:26. > :48:28.programme. In the early stages, important to check out Jazz

:48:29. > :48:33.Carlin's turn. I think she is the fastest in the water but her turning

:48:34. > :48:37.is not always the best. Mireia Belmonte Garcia, she loses maybe

:48:38. > :48:41.half a metre or a meter on her. That will not do you any favours when you

:48:42. > :48:46.have 15 or 16 turns to do in the event. She's the best swimmer, far

:48:47. > :48:53.and away but Mireia Belmonte Garcia no pushover. Jazz Carlin got about

:48:54. > :48:57.five seconds, in terms best times, but that was the Commonwealth Games.

:48:58. > :49:03.These two will go head to head and have a right old ding-dong.

:49:04. > :49:10.Now and 600 metres, it is a head to head battle with Jazz Carlin and

:49:11. > :49:13.Maria Belmont Garcia. For the first time, Jazz Carlin pushes off the

:49:14. > :49:18.wall in first place. She is starting to make a move. She is sat on the

:49:19. > :49:22.hips of Maria Belmont Garcia for the majority of the race but like we saw

:49:23. > :49:26.and the Commonwealth Games, she is not leaving it to a sprint finish in

:49:27. > :49:30.the closing stages. She is trying to break early. At the moment, Maria

:49:31. > :49:37.Belmont a Garcia not responding but what can Jazz Carlin do? Garcia has

:49:38. > :49:41.been pulling away from her on every turn but Jazz Carlin is trying to

:49:42. > :49:48.extend the lead, and looking like she is really managing to step up a

:49:49. > :49:52.gear. Yes, come on, Jazz Carlin. You have got about 125 metres to go and

:49:53. > :49:58.you are showing Marriot Belmont Garcia who the boss is. She may have

:49:59. > :50:04.the stamina but you have broken Garcia who the boss is. She may have

:50:05. > :50:07.with 100 metres to go. It looks like Jazz Carlin could win Great

:50:08. > :50:18.Britain's fourth gold medal. Beautiful swing form Jazz Carlin. At

:50:19. > :50:21.the whistle, she leads by 1.65 seconds, turning the race around in

:50:22. > :50:26.the space of 100 metres. She was just behind going that point and she

:50:27. > :50:30.finished that 100 metres nearly two seconds ahead. She has broken

:50:31. > :50:36.Belmonte. Surely she cannot find another gear? She has left five or

:50:37. > :50:41.six metres clear. With 50 metres to go in the 800 freestyle, Jazz Carlin

:50:42. > :50:46.has stepped up the pace. She is dust outside the European record spit.

:50:47. > :50:53.This is a fantastic swim from Jazz Carlin. -- just outside. Perfectly

:50:54. > :50:57.timed. Unbelievable, in 150 metres, she has taken seven metres out of

:50:58. > :51:03.it, Jazz Carlin. She knows she has won it at this stage. How good must

:51:04. > :51:10.it feel? Superb swim from Jazz Carlin, she comes to the wall and

:51:11. > :51:13.take the gold medal in 8:15 .54. Superb swimming, and gold again for

:51:14. > :51:18.Great Britain, and gold again for Jazz Carlin. She could challenge for

:51:19. > :51:24.the world record if her turning wire as good -- was as good as

:51:25. > :51:29.Belmonte's. I guess I'm never happy but well done. There we have

:51:30. > :51:30.confirmation, Jazz Carlin is the European champion in a new

:51:31. > :51:41.championship record time. I can't believe it. Off the back of

:51:42. > :51:44.the Commonwealth Games, I thought it was going to be tough but to do a

:51:45. > :51:48.personal best like that, in a great race with a strong field, to come

:51:49. > :51:53.out on top, I'm so happy, I can't believe it. Jazz Carlin with a big

:51:54. > :52:01.smile on her face and rightly so. A championship record. She is the

:52:02. > :52:06.European champion, 2014. It adds to her Commonwealth Games gold medal as

:52:07. > :52:11.well. You can't tell smiling back at her, to see the big grin on her

:52:12. > :52:15.face. -- help smiling. She so deserves to be on top of the podium

:52:16. > :52:20.this summer. Both at the Commonwealth Games and here. She has

:52:21. > :52:25.worked really hard, stepped up from the 200 and 400. Her coach said he

:52:26. > :52:32.thought she would be good at 800 and it has worked. She has got the gold.

:52:33. > :52:35.STUDIO: Huge congratulation, gold medal at the European Championships

:52:36. > :52:40.for Jazz Carlin, back-to-back titles. She must be thrilled but

:52:41. > :52:44.also relieved. She has been in Rebecca Adlington's shadow, the

:52:45. > :52:48.never-never girl, and has been sick and ill going into major meetings in

:52:49. > :52:50.the last couple of years. The Commonwealth Games was excellent but

:52:51. > :52:56.she has gone three seconds faster, here. What was so impressive was

:52:57. > :53:01.that Belmonte was with her at 650 metres and in the last 150, she tore

:53:02. > :53:07.her apart and took six seconds off her. That bodes well. The only other

:53:08. > :53:11.person that can stay with that pace is the American girl. It is not like

:53:12. > :53:16.you are doing massive competitions every week. How easy is it to find

:53:17. > :53:20.and maintain form? Can she kicked on? To me, when you do all the

:53:21. > :53:23.training, identify and understand swimmer not wanting to come to the

:53:24. > :53:29.Europeans. It is a long year but Ukraine a lot during the year, for

:53:30. > :53:34.one competition. -- Ukraine a lot. Why not do another? She probably

:53:35. > :53:38.thought she had peaked at the Commonwealth Games but she has gone

:53:39. > :53:42.three seconds faster now. Is there more to come? A lot of coaches will

:53:43. > :53:47.go into major meetings, seeing the way the swimmers have rested and

:53:48. > :53:51.what training they do leading into competitions. Another lady who is

:53:52. > :53:53.delighted she came here is one who already has a bronze medal and now

:53:54. > :53:55.she goes in the 200 metres individual medley. Can she go one

:53:56. > :54:05.matter? -- better. COMMENTATOR: Aimee Willmott will try

:54:06. > :54:25.to challenge in this one. Katinka Hosszu, in the centre yellow

:54:26. > :54:29.lanes in the black swimming hat. She holds the European record and she is

:54:30. > :54:36.the class act in the field. No one should get near Katinka Hosszu. She

:54:37. > :54:42.is the class act. Siobhan O'Connor might have given her a run but she

:54:43. > :54:47.is not here. Aimee Willmott has put in a good fly leg, which did not

:54:48. > :54:50.happen yesterday in her semifinal. She is really taking this to her.

:54:51. > :54:55.There is definitely a medal up for grabs. You never know, she might

:54:56. > :55:00.even be able to catch her. This is Katinka Hosszu's strongest rogue,

:55:01. > :55:03.the backstroke. Breaststroke is probably her weakest but she has

:55:04. > :55:10.given herself over a body length lead. No surprise to see Belmonte

:55:11. > :55:16.well off the pace, having literally just finished the 800 free final.

:55:17. > :55:21.Gutsy, but a pretty gruelling attempt to swim two races

:55:22. > :55:28.back-to-back. It looks more like a swim down for Belmonte, for me.

:55:29. > :55:32.Aimee Willmott had a fantastic breaststroke leg in the semifinals

:55:33. > :55:37.she had to really work it. She needs to get into medal contention. No

:55:38. > :55:41.doubt who the winner is going to be, Katinka Hosszu can have a cup of tea

:55:42. > :55:47.at 150 but Aimee Willmott looks fantastic coming through, with 125

:55:48. > :55:52.to go. She has got to keep working. Then the medal will be hers. Superb

:55:53. > :55:57.restaurant leg in the 400 medley gave her a bronze medal. They turn

:55:58. > :56:02.for the final 50 and Katinka Hosszu is ahead of Aimee Willmott. The

:56:03. > :56:05.superb breast stroke leg has put into second place. Aimee Willmott is

:56:06. > :56:12.working very hard in the freestyle leg. She has got to keep the

:56:13. > :56:15.Austrian firm. She has do look out for the outside lane. Aimee Willmott

:56:16. > :56:20.seems to be heading. No doubt who the winner will be. Katinka Hosszu

:56:21. > :56:24.has led from the gun and she is heading into the wall for a

:56:25. > :56:31.fantastic swim, taking the title in a championship record time. And

:56:32. > :56:35.Aimee Willmott takes silver. Lisa Zaiser of Austria takes the bronze.

:56:36. > :56:39.Jamie Moore what with another medal. She had bronze and now she has a

:56:40. > :56:44.silver. There is the winner, Katinka Hosszu with a championship record.

:56:45. > :56:47.Fantastic swim from her, great championship record. But look what

:56:48. > :56:52.it means to Aimee Willmott. She might well have a smile on her face.

:56:53. > :56:58.This girl cannot stop winning championship medals. Confirmation of

:56:59. > :57:01.Aimee Willmott's silver, and the championship record and second gold

:57:02. > :57:05.medal of the meat for Katinka Hosszu.

:57:06. > :57:12.I'm really happy with how I swam, I managed to step it up through the

:57:13. > :57:16.heat and the semifinal and final. I'm chuffed I progressed my time and

:57:17. > :57:21.have come away with a silver which is better than bronze. Another medal

:57:22. > :57:25.for Aimee Willmott, bronze and silver, after two silver medals in

:57:26. > :57:30.Glasgow. How exciting prospect is she? Very exciting, leading into

:57:31. > :57:33.Glasgow, a lot of people thought she would pip Hannah for the title but

:57:34. > :57:37.she has the experience and a better time and on the day she delivered.

:57:38. > :57:40.After getting the experience in Glasgow and now here, we talk about

:57:41. > :57:44.the Olympics in two years time but she is one to watch. I know between

:57:45. > :57:49.her and Hannah, every competition they have against each other will be

:57:50. > :57:52.a dogfight. She's moving from Middlesbrough to London. How will

:57:53. > :57:57.that affect things? She will be moving away from family and friends

:57:58. > :58:01.but potentially to a better coach? Everyone adapts in different ways

:58:02. > :58:06.and react in different ways. For her, the pool in London is a really

:58:07. > :58:10.inspiring environment. It is one of those. If you are not a swimmer, you

:58:11. > :58:14.won't get this but some pools, you walk in and it has a wow factor. She

:58:15. > :58:17.will have that everyday, the best acidity in the world, one of the

:58:18. > :58:21.best coaches in the world, given what she has done with her at the

:58:22. > :58:24.moment. She has got the right ingredients, and in two years time,

:58:25. > :58:29.she will be one to look out for. That is not a feeling exclusive to

:58:30. > :58:33.swimmers. When I go to that cool, I don't look like a swimmer but I feel

:58:34. > :58:38.like one. Now for the men's 200 metre breast road. Ross Murdoch, the

:58:39. > :58:43.golden boy of Glasgow 2014, going up against Andrew Willis. Earlier this

:58:44. > :58:58.week, that was a Team GB one-two but that involves Adam Peaty.

:58:59. > :59:04.COMMENTATOR: Varies the line-up for the men's 200 metre breast stroke

:59:05. > :59:06.final and two British swimmers going in a second, Ross Murdoch, the

:59:07. > :59:21.fastest qualifier. Ross Murdoch is in the centre of the

:59:22. > :59:26.pool, the fastest qualifier from the heats. What can he do in this final?

:59:27. > :59:32.So much promise this summer and he has already delivered so much. Marco

:59:33. > :59:37.Koch, the home favourite, will be trying to win Germany's first gold

:59:38. > :59:42.medal. It was quality, Andrew Willis in Lane 3, yesterday, during the

:59:43. > :59:47.semifinal, started off so smoothly, starting to tie up on the fourth

:59:48. > :59:51.length a bit. You have to just swim your own race on these stroke

:59:52. > :59:57.events. Don't worry about yet arrested tennis in Lane 2, swim your

:59:58. > :00:00.plan, make sure you are there. -- Giedrius Titenis. Ross Murdoch is so

:00:01. > :00:06.composed in the centre of your picture. Beautiful, technically,

:00:07. > :00:10.such a proficient swimmer. Not the biggest, but he makes up for his

:00:11. > :00:15.technical ability, Ross Murdoch. Ross Murdoch, one of the new kids on

:00:16. > :00:20.the block but these swimmers, they have seen enough to know that he

:00:21. > :00:25.finishes strongly. At halfway, Giedrius Titenis of Lithuania is

:00:26. > :00:29.leading. No surprise he has taken the race out because he is better at

:00:30. > :00:32.the 100. This is where Ross Murdoch turns up the pace, this is the

:00:33. > :00:37.length that makes all the difference on his races. Here he comes,

:00:38. > :00:55.challenging Marco Koch, one lane up from him, closing in on him with

:00:56. > :00:59.every stroke. They are ahead of the European Championship record time.

:01:00. > :01:11.Ross Murdoch might have the ability. A fantastic turn from Koch, Murdoch

:01:12. > :01:17.trying to chase him down with every single stroke. Speeding up his

:01:18. > :01:23.stroke rate, Koch, his stroke is going up and down. Can he get to the

:01:24. > :01:32.wall first? And is Koch gets the win, just three tenths ahead of

:01:33. > :01:37.Murdoch. Titenis in third. Koch took that race on and Ross Murdoch left

:01:38. > :01:44.himself a little bit too much to do. I thought Murdoch might take Koch at

:01:45. > :01:48.the end. He did seem to tie up a little bit, maybe a little bit more

:01:49. > :01:54.race experience, you have to keep that stroke really long. He was so

:01:55. > :01:58.strong. Just into the finish. He is reaching Murdoch. Reaching at the

:01:59. > :02:00.end. Paul Andrew Willis just missing out.

:02:01. > :02:06.reaching Murdoch. Reaching at the end. Paul Andrew -- poor.

:02:07. > :02:11.Confirmation, championship record for Marco Koch. Andrew Willis in

:02:12. > :02:16.fourth place. The last 50 metres I was catching, I ran out of fuel a

:02:17. > :02:20.little bit, but it is the race tactics and how it went on the

:02:21. > :02:28.night. It is a tough ask to come out here and PB again. There he is, Ross

:02:29. > :02:36.Murdoch. What a season this young man has had full is Marco Koch will

:02:37. > :02:41.have looked at the race split and know how fast Ross Murdoch finished.

:02:42. > :02:47.He probably would have adapted his tactics for that. He took the race

:02:48. > :02:51.out really strong. He was pushing for that world record, we thought he

:02:52. > :02:55.would almost get it, in the end silver. A fantastic race. Have a

:02:56. > :03:03.look at his progression over the last year. From just making the

:03:04. > :03:08.semifinal at Barcelona and the Olympics, to beating Jamieson. Then

:03:09. > :03:12.coming in here. Although he lost the race, the time he did was very close

:03:13. > :03:19.to what he did in Glasgow, not far off the world record. How do you get

:03:20. > :03:22.that good that quick? Just training. There is not a magic ingredient in

:03:23. > :03:29.terms of... It is doing what your coach tells you to and finding work.

:03:30. > :03:34.The training he is doing is paying dividends. Silver for Ross Murdoch,

:03:35. > :03:42.old for Koch, much to the delight of the German home crowd. Andrew Willis

:03:43. > :03:46.just missed out on that one. In 1976 in Montreal we saw a bit of a breast

:03:47. > :03:52.stroke legend in the shape of David Wilkie. Here is his story. My father

:03:53. > :03:57.was actually working in Sri Lanka and he worked there out of the

:03:58. > :04:01.Second World War. My uncle was there at the time and thought it was such

:04:02. > :04:08.a great place. He eventually brought my mother over and I was born in

:04:09. > :04:11.1964. Grew up in Sri Lanka, learned to swim there and spent many a happy

:04:12. > :04:16.year there. Because I was swimming from a very young age and because we

:04:17. > :04:21.spent a lot of time at the swimming club, I could not but be, good

:04:22. > :04:26.swimmer. If it was up to me I would have stayed in Sri Lanka, Colombo.

:04:27. > :04:30.My father, being a Scot, my mother being Scottish, it was going to be a

:04:31. > :04:34.Scottish education for my sister and I, so we were sent back to this

:04:35. > :04:42.country. We used to have swimming at a place with a school pool. There

:04:43. > :04:47.was a pool attendant who looked at us and talked to my coach, Frank

:04:48. > :04:52.Thomas, he said we have a good little swimmer, you might come and

:04:53. > :04:56.have a look at him. Frank came down. My father was in town at the time.

:04:57. > :05:02.He said, would David like to become a member of the Varsity club? I have

:05:03. > :05:07.done a few thousand laps of this pool, I can tell you. I remember

:05:08. > :05:10.when there were about 25 swimmers swimming up and down here, it was

:05:11. > :05:17.like swimming in a harbour, it was that rough. Good memories and some

:05:18. > :05:21.tough memories. Invariably the pool was freezing cold. We were tough

:05:22. > :05:27.swimmers in those days, we could handle that. The whole thing was a

:05:28. > :05:31.Victorian bath and I began to train a bit harder and push myself a

:05:32. > :05:34.little bit more, then I was picked for the Scottish team to swim in the

:05:35. > :05:40.Commonwealth Games. And I won a bronze medal. A child perhaps for a

:05:41. > :05:43.home medal from David Wilkie in the men's 200 meter breaststroke final.

:05:44. > :05:47.They should have felt a lot more nervous than I did. I coach said

:05:48. > :05:52.it's looks like I was reading a comic behind the blocks, but I do

:05:53. > :05:56.not think it is true. Wilkie has made such astonishing progress

:05:57. > :05:59.recently. There were 2000 people here in 1970, you can imagine the

:06:00. > :06:05.atmosphere in what is a huge building, a young guy swinging his

:06:06. > :06:08.four lengths in his first real major international competition. Had it

:06:09. > :06:13.not been in Edinburgh I probably would have not got gold medal.

:06:14. > :06:20.Wilkie kicking as hard as he can. It is going to be Mahoney. Wilkie in

:06:21. > :06:26.third. I suppose the bronze was the catalyst of the rest of my swimming

:06:27. > :06:32.career. The Commonwealth Games in 1974 for me was an important things

:06:33. > :06:37.going. Two golds and a silver is not bad. If I had had silver at the 1972

:06:38. > :06:43.Olympics I was determined to get at least one gold medal. My main event

:06:44. > :06:48.was breaststroke, I trained so hard for it. It was a joy to win, it

:06:49. > :06:56.really was. David Wilkie is absolutely superb. Look at him go.

:06:57. > :06:59.It is Wilkie! And it is a new world record for Great Britain and David

:07:00. > :07:08.Wilkie. What a swim. The gold medal for the 200 metres breaststroke in

:07:09. > :07:13.Montreal 1976. And the wearer, Britain's David Wilkie. David, you

:07:14. > :07:18.must be a very happy man. Very happy, I am glad the hard work I put

:07:19. > :07:23.in is finally paying off. I am very proud wearer. When I went to

:07:24. > :07:43.Aberdeen, the traffic stopped. Look for get inspired. Click on that

:07:44. > :07:48.and find details of events and activities happening in your area.

:07:49. > :07:50.Time to turn our attention to the women's 100 metres backstroke

:07:51. > :08:00.featuring Jordan Amis. -- George Davies. Katinka Hosszu is

:08:01. > :08:15.back in the pool. The girls are away. A good start

:08:16. > :08:26.coming from Nielsen in the white swimming hat in the centre of the

:08:27. > :08:32.pool. Perhaps Baumtova can do something more in the Hundred than

:08:33. > :08:38.her previous race. The Dane looks brilliant. George Davies has two

:08:39. > :08:43.work on the second 15. I have no idea how Katinka Hosszu is there.

:08:44. > :08:47.She has already swum this evening, won the medley. She might fade at

:08:48. > :08:58.the end. If George Davies focuses she could get on the shoulder of

:08:59. > :09:02.Nielsen. -- Georgia DAvies. She's finishing strong, so is Katinka

:09:03. > :09:05.Hosszu. The girls are coming back at her. It will be so tight for the

:09:06. > :09:12.finish, who is going to get the touch? I joint victory, Nielsen and

:09:13. > :09:16.Katinka Hosszu take joint first place, how many times have we seen

:09:17. > :09:18.this at the championships already? Joint gold, Katinka Hosszu and Mia

:09:19. > :09:31.Nielsen. What a swim. Just look at this finish, so

:09:32. > :09:37.important to spot that finish. Mia Nielsen guiding in at the end. She

:09:38. > :09:43.is only 17 years of age. The experience of Katinka Hosszu, who

:09:44. > :09:47.spotted that finish to perfection. It was a joint victory for Katinka

:09:48. > :09:52.Hosszu and Mia Nielsen with George Davies back on the podium for Great

:09:53. > :09:56.Britain and the bronze medal. I am really pleased I can be on the

:09:57. > :10:00.podium after last night's semifinal, I was not that happy with the time.

:10:01. > :10:03.I lost a bit of confidence because I was not quite on the same form as I

:10:04. > :10:08.was at the Commonwealth Games but I have managed to come back tonight

:10:09. > :10:12.and drop my time quite a lot. To be on the podium again is just a bonus.

:10:13. > :10:17.That could not have been any closer. Really exciting, the main

:10:18. > :10:23.bit funny about watching Georgia DAvies, she was coming back over the

:10:24. > :10:27.last 25 metres. She is normally a 50 metres swimmer. She was fighting.

:10:28. > :10:32.More work on that back end and she could be a real contender, she could

:10:33. > :10:38.have potentially won that race. It is good experience, isn't it?

:10:39. > :10:41.Absolutely. She made her senior debut four years ago, all of this is

:10:42. > :10:44.about experience, getting to the point where you stand on the block

:10:45. > :10:47.and are confident in your own ability, you have been in the

:10:48. > :10:52.situation many times before and you relax. Standing on the podium is not

:10:53. > :10:57.a bad experience. Gold in Glasgow, bronze tonight. One man who got

:10:58. > :11:01.plenty of medals in Glasgow is in action might now the 50 meter

:11:02. > :11:09.backstroke. Let's turn our attention to Chris Walker-Hebborn.

:11:10. > :11:17.COMMENTATOR: Chris Walker-Hebborn, winner of the 100 meter backstroke.

:11:18. > :11:26.He is the one in lane three. You need a good start. It is a good

:11:27. > :11:31.start. A great start coming from Chris Walker-Hebborn. He really made

:11:32. > :11:35.the most of that underwater work. Has he got the power and speed to

:11:36. > :11:40.turn over? Nothing between the swimmers as they power down the

:11:41. > :11:55.pool. It will come down to who can nail the finish, who will get the

:11:56. > :12:00.touch. Morozov takes the gold. Bronze for Chris Walker-Hebborn. It

:12:01. > :12:08.is all about his finish. He absolutely nailed it. You can see

:12:09. > :12:12.the power of Morozov, freestyler turned backstroke. How close is

:12:13. > :12:23.that? Chris Walker-Hebborn had no right to get a medal, but he's not

:12:24. > :12:25.one. -- he snuck one. Chris Walker-Hebborn taking that medal two

:12:26. > :12:33.hundredths of a second ahead of fourth place. Chris Walker-Hebborn

:12:34. > :12:37.feels like another exciting prospect in Team GB, is this evidence to

:12:38. > :12:41.support he can be want to go for gold? Very much, we have seen in

:12:42. > :12:45.Commonwealth Games how well we did, the strength and depth we have.

:12:46. > :12:48.Coming into the championships with certain names missing, we have been

:12:49. > :12:53.on the podium a lot of time, on top of the podium winning gold and

:12:54. > :12:59.bronze. He has had a fantastic year. Consistently. I am pleased he has

:13:00. > :13:02.come here and raised his game. The more you stand up there, compete and

:13:03. > :13:06.win medals, the more confidence you get. He has swagger and is

:13:07. > :13:13.confident, but lovely to see him do it.

:13:14. > :13:23.On day five Britain still topped the medal table, and Steven Milne adds

:13:24. > :13:27.to the hall? He goes in the 800 meter freestyle. -- adds to the

:13:28. > :13:46.hall. Look out for the Italians in lanes two and three. The men's 800

:13:47. > :13:53.metres freestyle underway. Not the greatest dive from Paltrinieri in

:13:54. > :13:58.lane two. They do not need the quickest start in this race. The two

:13:59. > :14:02.Italians in the black swimming hat in lanes two and three. Towards the

:14:03. > :14:08.bottom of the screen. They already look like they will have a national

:14:09. > :14:14.championship battle. The turnover from Paltrinieri on the first 50 is

:14:15. > :14:18.an incredibly high tempo for an 800 meter freestyle. He is certainly not

:14:19. > :14:23.afraid. He has to have a lot of confidence in his fitness. Detti

:14:24. > :14:32.next to him, as Karen said, European record-holder, as the form. 742 he

:14:33. > :14:35.has been. The Italians and formidable form, taking it to

:14:36. > :14:49.everybody else on the first hundred. It is going to be behind Jonson and

:14:50. > :14:53.Detti. Paltrinieri raise 100 of a second inside that European record.

:14:54. > :14:59.He has dropped off the pace a little bit. That blistering early pace he

:15:00. > :15:05.set. Jonson fighting back into silver medal position and Gabriel

:15:06. > :15:10.Detti currently in third. You can see a strong finish coming from

:15:11. > :15:14.Stephen Milne. Great performance from Stephen Milne. It is all about

:15:15. > :15:19.the head of the race. Paltrinieri looks fantastic, he is starting to

:15:20. > :15:22.hurt a little bit. You can tell, but the European record is still within

:15:23. > :15:29.his lights. Paltrinieri fancies another similar to the macro

:15:30. > :15:33.silver. It is all about the Italian. It is Paltrinieri finishing off this

:15:34. > :15:35.silver. It is all about the Italian. great 800 metres swim, just five

:15:36. > :15:40.metres left for him as he heads into the wall. On that finish. It is a

:15:41. > :15:48.championship record, not a European record. A great swim from

:15:49. > :15:55.Paltrinieri to finish ahead of Joenson and Detti. A really strong

:15:56. > :16:05.finish from Stephen Milne and inside the Scottish record. Confirmation of

:16:06. > :16:07.the championship record for Gregorio Paltrinieri. The same top three as

:16:08. > :16:16.the 1500. It must be so frustrating, the

:16:17. > :16:20.second time for him this week. He finished so strong but did he get

:16:21. > :16:24.his tactics wrong? He was on the wrong side of the pool, to start

:16:25. > :16:28.with. He was in Lane 7 and the action was on the other side. When I

:16:29. > :16:32.said race the other people, he can see across and he should have gone

:16:33. > :16:37.with the others. You say tactically he got it wrong. It was a good time

:16:38. > :16:41.but next time, he should not save so much until the end. If we had gone

:16:42. > :16:46.earlier, he could have potentially have stolen a medal. He will be

:16:47. > :16:49.disappointed. In terms of times, he had a brilliant time tonight and

:16:50. > :16:55.earlier in the week, so plenty to take away from this one. Now it is

:16:56. > :16:58.the turn of Renshaw, she got a bronze in this in the Commonwealth

:16:59. > :17:06.Games but can she do it or even go better at the Europeans?

:17:07. > :17:14.COMMENTATOR: The 200 metres breast road final four women.

:17:15. > :17:24.The women's 200 breaststroke final, in Lane 4, the whites in Hat of

:17:25. > :17:28.Pedersen, the clear favourite. -- white swimming hat. She must be

:17:29. > :17:33.eyeing up the record. She has had a great season and has been posting

:17:34. > :17:43.some superb times this year already. She has been under 2:20, this year.

:17:44. > :17:52.Leading the world. Well, Pedersen looks fantastic on the first 50.

:17:53. > :17:56.Very good will work and a strong butterfly kick. She is not having it

:17:57. > :18:00.all her own way, though, Vitalina Simonova, trying to stay on her hip.

:18:01. > :18:09.Molly Renshaw, there, in Lane 2, still in the mix. Great start from

:18:10. > :18:16.Rikke Moller Pedersen. You can see the glide she has, the powerful

:18:17. > :18:21.kick, making the most of it in the streamlined position. Looking very

:18:22. > :18:25.comfortable. At the halfway mark, just 0.3 seconds outside the

:18:26. > :18:35.European record, which is the world record as well. She is right on the

:18:36. > :18:39.world record time. Being chased by Vitalina Simonova of Russia. She

:18:40. > :18:46.finished sixth in the 100 breast stroke earlier this week. Also

:18:47. > :18:56.coming through, Marina Khan -- Marina Garcia Urzainqui. It is a

:18:57. > :19:01.thing of beauty, Pedersen's 200 Breast Rd. It looks pretty good. She

:19:02. > :19:04.is under the European record split, her world record split but Molly

:19:05. > :19:07.Renshaw is in fifth position and she still has a chance. This is where

:19:08. > :19:13.she has two Bridge, got to work like she did at the Commonwealth Games.

:19:14. > :19:17.-- has to push. Let's see her get into the mix. Pedersen is ahead of

:19:18. > :19:22.world record pace. Right on the Red Line, the European record, the world

:19:23. > :19:26.record. It is going to come down to the touch. Can Rikke Moller Pedersen

:19:27. > :19:29.get the touch? It is starting to drift away in the closing stages as

:19:30. > :19:35.she ties up on the breast road, coming towards the end. It is

:19:36. > :19:39.Pedersen, taking the gold medal. -- rest stroke. Molly Renshaw comes

:19:40. > :19:43.through to take silver and Jessica Vall, third. What a swim from the

:19:44. > :19:47.18-year-old Molly Renshaw, just like at the Commonwealth Games, storming

:19:48. > :19:53.through in the closing stages, a superb silver medal but there is

:19:54. > :20:01.your winner. Wow explanation mark that is all we can say about a swim

:20:02. > :20:05.like that. -- wow! You can see the power they generate, coming out of

:20:06. > :20:09.the top of the water and diving into each stroke. Look at the distance

:20:10. > :20:15.that Rikke Moller Pedersen had a head. And look at the distance from

:20:16. > :20:19.Molly Renshaw, to take silver. What a swim from her. And various

:20:20. > :20:32.confirmation of the result. -- there is confirmation. I never

:20:33. > :20:35.inspected to go that fast at the end of the long season so to get more

:20:36. > :20:40.than half a second personal best is more than I can ask for. And a new

:20:41. > :20:44.British record. Yes, I did not think of that but I can't complain. We

:20:45. > :20:49.thought Molly Renshaw was out of it and then she might win it. Where did

:20:50. > :20:54.that come from? Down the last length, she kept calling them back.

:20:55. > :20:58.Pedersen is the world record holder but down the last length, her stroke

:20:59. > :21:02.flowed, she did not panic, the timing was there. It was a really

:21:03. > :21:07.mature swim, two seconds than she has been before. Out of the pool,

:21:08. > :21:12.she showed great mental strength as well, having missed the Olympics. It

:21:13. > :21:18.is one of those, turning a negative into a positive. In London, she did

:21:19. > :21:21.not go, lost on a technicality, did not make the qualifier, appealed and

:21:22. > :21:25.it did not happen and she was only 16. It can make or break you and it

:21:26. > :21:31.has made her. Now she's winning medals at major championships and it

:21:32. > :21:34.can only better from here. It feels like a great time for British

:21:35. > :21:37.swimming but going forward, the future looks bright. You have a list

:21:38. > :21:44.of young, potential good summers like Ben Proud and Adam Peaty and

:21:45. > :21:49.she is part of that. Did I tell you are used to swim? I was 38 but now

:21:50. > :21:52.it is a lot younger. Chris Walker-Hebborn and Hannah Miley,

:21:53. > :21:57.Fran Halsall the oldest and they are 24. When I was on the team, they

:21:58. > :22:00.were the young ones. 18-24, now, two years before the Olympics in Rio,

:22:01. > :22:09.which we are already focusing on, they will be in prime. Let's move on

:22:10. > :22:13.to the men's 100 metres freestyle. It was a one-two for France, Florent

:22:14. > :22:16.Manaudou taking his third gold of the championship so far and he has

:22:17. > :22:19.got even more chances in the pool, so look out for him. Fabien Gilot

:22:20. > :22:28.took silver and the bronze went to Italy. Next up, the women's 100

:22:29. > :22:31.meter butterfly final. Jemma Lowe is going for Team GB. If she wants to

:22:32. > :22:36.take gold, she will have to get by one of these rumours of the

:22:37. > :22:38.tournament, Sarah Sjostrom Sweden but other British swimmers have done

:22:39. > :22:41.well against a world-class field tonight, so hopefully that will set

:22:42. > :22:49.up Jemma Lowe nicely. Let's see what happens.

:22:50. > :22:59.COMMENTATOR: The star to watching this one, Sarah Sjostrom of Sweden.

:23:00. > :23:02.-- in this one. The 100 metres butterfly final, featuring the 50

:23:03. > :23:07.metres world record-holder, Sarah Sjostrom in Lane 4. At a very fast

:23:08. > :23:13.start coming from Jeanette Ottesen in the white swimming hat in Lane 5.

:23:14. > :23:18.She is the danger that Sarah Sjostrom has do watch out for. Inept

:23:19. > :23:22.artisan, great 50 metres speed on freestyle and butterfly, taking this

:23:23. > :23:26.on. Sarah Sjostrom is the master of keeping the pace going over 100

:23:27. > :23:30.metres. Fantastic from Sarah Sjostrom. She knows what she's

:23:31. > :23:34.doing, hanging on the shoulder but I like the look of Jemma Lowe in Lane

:23:35. > :23:38.7. She has put herself in the mix for a medal but she has to bring the

:23:39. > :23:42.second 50 home. It is all about the head of the race between Sarah

:23:43. > :23:45.Sjostrom and Jeanette Ottesen. Jeanette Ottesen hanging onto the

:23:46. > :23:50.lead and Sarah Sjostrom trying to make a move. It's a great battle

:23:51. > :23:55.between Denmark and Sweden. And Jeanette Ottesen hang on? It will

:23:56. > :24:02.come down to the touch. And the windows to Jeanette Ottesen! 0.01

:24:03. > :24:07.seconds ahead. What a surprise that she took the championship record,

:24:08. > :24:17.that has stood for so long, since 2002, and Sarah Sjostrom take the

:24:18. > :24:24.silver. Ilaria Bianchi of Italy taking the bronze. Jemma Lowe

:24:25. > :24:28.finishing sixth. You can't breathe, the last two strokes will lose you

:24:29. > :24:32.race is only 100 flight and Sarah Sjostrom as proof that. Don't

:24:33. > :24:36.breathe in the red zone. She was ahead with five metres to go. She

:24:37. > :24:40.has got to get her head down. That is what Jeanette Ottesen does, gets

:24:41. > :24:45.her head down on the last two strokes, and steals the victory.

:24:46. > :24:49.Jeanette Ottesen, European champion and a championship record time.

:24:50. > :24:55.Sarah Sjostrom has do settle for silver.

:24:56. > :25:00.In the end, Jeanette Ottesen winning by the tiniest of margins but given

:25:01. > :25:05.she beat Sarah Sjostrom, is it a bigger victory? Genk everyone was

:25:06. > :25:08.shot because Sarah Sjostrom had not been on form leading into this but

:25:09. > :25:12.Jeanette Ottesen is the second fastest in the world in that

:25:13. > :25:15.distance. It showed you about getting the detail right, the

:25:16. > :25:19.reactions to the start, turn and finish, if you get something wrong,

:25:20. > :25:23.that is the difference between winning and losing races. What about

:25:24. > :25:28.Jemma Lowe? She got the gold from earlier in the week but this is the

:25:29. > :25:31.individual. Slightly disappointed. She has been faster. It was not bad

:25:32. > :25:35.but when you look at the other athletes, if I was her coach, I

:25:36. > :25:39.would go back and look at Sarah Sjostrom and Jeanette Ottesen, they

:25:40. > :25:42.are bigger and stronger. She needs a bit more speed so I would work hard

:25:43. > :25:50.on getting more strength in the gym and hopefully that will translate

:25:51. > :25:53.into the water and she can get on the podium. Other female members of

:25:54. > :25:56.the team have done that and it has worked. Absolutely. Now the men's 50

:25:57. > :25:59.metre breast row, Adam Peaty goes in this one, the semifinals but he has

:26:00. > :26:04.been in brilliant form this season so let's

:26:05. > :26:13.COMMENTATOR: Adam Peaty going in the second semifinal of the men's 50

:26:14. > :26:20.metre backstroke. What can he do in this? The reigning European champion

:26:21. > :26:24.in this one but Adam Peaty in the centre of the pool, looking high,

:26:25. > :26:27.strong and smooth and he is edging further and further ahead with every

:26:28. > :26:35.single stroke. Adam Peaty in a class of his own, a big glide into the

:26:36. > :26:41.wall. It is a world record! 26.62, the world record for Adam Peaty,

:26:42. > :26:46.with a glide into the finish! He cannot believe it, Adam Peaty, it

:26:47. > :26:54.has just dawned on him, he is the fastest 15 East -- fastest 50 metre

:26:55. > :26:57.restricts women in history. He has come out of the lane, cannot believe

:26:58. > :27:03.it, the dons are on show, get in there. A real power. Although it was

:27:04. > :27:07.not the best. He did not come up the fastest, getting into great

:27:08. > :27:12.streamlining, whole-body going through, the one hole in the water.

:27:13. > :27:16.A big, powerful break-out as well. As he is going down, here, so much

:27:17. > :27:28.power but look at the finish, a world-record swim. Oh, my gosh! He

:27:29. > :27:32.can go 0.3 quicker. Confirmation of the new world record for Great

:27:33. > :27:33.Britain's Adam Peaty, to take semifinal number two, looking good

:27:34. > :27:43.for the final tomorrow night. Feeling like I never have before, I

:27:44. > :27:51.don't think it will sink in for a few weeks. Tomorrow is a new day.

:27:52. > :27:56.Who knows what it brings? Where did the speed come from? I don't know,

:27:57. > :27:59.probably my winter training and a really good season. I have been

:28:00. > :28:04.getting faster every year. It is great to come out here and break a

:28:05. > :28:07.record. Adam Peaty with the world record. He is in phenomenal form

:28:08. > :28:11.coming off the back of the Commonwealth Games but that is

:28:12. > :28:15.incredible. It is huge, it was by 0.4 seconds as well. He pushed Van

:28:16. > :28:21.den Berg close in the race, the world record-holder, it is one of

:28:22. > :28:27.those times, the semifinals when you can let loose. The final is a bit

:28:28. > :28:32.more tense but he knew he had made the final Sony cut loose and had a

:28:33. > :28:35.go. He was surprised. A good time to get on the block and show off the

:28:36. > :28:41.dons but phenomenal for him. What does this mean for the final? Can he

:28:42. > :28:44.go quicker? He should win the race and on that time, he will win it a

:28:45. > :28:48.bit ahead of the rest of the field. It should not be tight but when it

:28:49. > :28:54.comes to finals and it is about the medals, you tend to try to go a bit

:28:55. > :28:58.quicker. He may try to break the record again but I don't know. He

:28:59. > :29:03.has to do it tomorrow. He has a bright future. Not a bad way to end

:29:04. > :29:07.day five, a world record and a silver medals at Team GB. -- and a

:29:08. > :29:16.silver medal for Team GB. No medals yet for Team GB on basics

:29:17. > :29:17.but this is a real chance, Fran Halsall and Georgia Davies in the 50

:29:18. > :29:33.metre backstroke. COMMENTATOR: And they are separated

:29:34. > :29:37.by two lanes. The women's 50 metre backstroke final, a big chance for

:29:38. > :29:41.the Britain, and away they go, Fran Halsall prides herself on good

:29:42. > :29:46.starting budgie is better known as a freestyler. What can she deliver?

:29:47. > :29:49.Georgia Davies, one of the great British champions. Not much between

:29:50. > :29:55.them as they cover the first of the race. Mercedes Peris Minguet and Mie

:29:56. > :30:02.Nielsen between the girls but it is a British one-two at the moment. The

:30:03. > :30:05.two of them come close together, and Mie Nielsen and Mercedes Peris

:30:06. > :30:09.Minguet, they touch, and it is a golden one-two for Britain with Fran

:30:10. > :30:13.Halsall just in front of Georgia Davies. And the smile on her face,

:30:14. > :30:21.enjoying the victory. She has got home by just 0.01 seconds. Fantastic

:30:22. > :30:25.performance from Fran Halsall, winning it by throwing herself at

:30:26. > :30:30.the wall but her start was fantastic. Just do the left of your

:30:31. > :30:33.screen, she has really worked the underwater butterfly leg kick. And

:30:34. > :30:37.then straight up into her stroke. Not known for her backstroke but

:30:38. > :30:39.look at the finish. It looked like Georgia Davies would take it but

:30:40. > :30:55.Fran Halsall by 0.01 seconds. was like a fun event coming in. I

:30:56. > :31:00.hoped to dip under 28 seconds. I did that and managed to get more medals

:31:01. > :31:08.so I cannot complain. You are not done yet, are you? I hope not. My

:31:09. > :31:12.main event is tomorrow. Arguably the race we have been waiting for

:31:13. > :31:15.all-day, 50 meter breaststroke final. Adam Peaty set a world record

:31:16. > :31:19.coming into this, what effect will it have on tonight?

:31:20. > :31:25.The rest of the field will say it is about us trying to win silver

:31:26. > :31:29.because Adam Peaty is in a league of his own, .7 of a second faster than

:31:30. > :31:33.the rest of the field when he broke the world record yesterday. This

:31:34. > :31:38.event is nailed on for him, it is just how fast it is going to go. Can

:31:39. > :31:42.he go quicker? Absolutely, he made a couple of mistakes yesterday. You

:31:43. > :31:45.look at the little things you could have done differently when you break

:31:46. > :31:50.a world record. He glided into the wall a little bit, there is more he

:31:51. > :31:55.could have done there. Let's watch as Adam Peaty takes to the stage.

:31:56. > :31:59.COMMENTATOR: So much expectation, in lane number four, what a golden year

:32:00. > :32:13.he has had. That world record, 26.62. Peaty, mergers quite late out

:32:14. > :32:21.of the water. Just behind the likes of Titenis from Lithuania. Peaty,

:32:22. > :32:27.now famed for the second half of his races, alongside these leaders, now

:32:28. > :32:42.digging in. Peaty going strongly. On the far side... Peaty is too strong

:32:43. > :32:47.for them. Titenis finishes second. A really good swim from this bristling

:32:48. > :32:51.young talent. He will be happy with another gold medal around his neck

:32:52. > :32:55.but I don't think, looking back, his coach will be too happy with this

:32:56. > :33:00.start. He was half a metre down on the Little Wayne Jan. You can't

:33:01. > :33:04.really do that on a 50. He is so strong and powerful he did get back

:33:05. > :33:09.into it. He missed the war when he broke the world record. A better

:33:10. > :33:14.finish there. A marvellous meeting continues for Adam Peaty, gold medal

:33:15. > :33:18.again. Titenis and Dugonjic second and third. I am really happy with

:33:19. > :33:25.that one, slower than the heats and the semis, coming off a massive high

:33:26. > :33:27.last night. I hope that by the Olympics I can find you in that and

:33:28. > :33:37.get stronger through the rounds. Welcome to the final day of

:33:38. > :33:42.competition here in Berlin. Fran Halsall already has two gold medals,

:33:43. > :33:46.last night's was a surprise. Let's see what she can do in the 1500

:33:47. > :33:48.meter freestyle we are about to find out who the fastest woman in Europe

:33:49. > :34:06.is. The 50 meter freestyle is the first

:34:07. > :34:08.up for the women tonight. Two girls have enjoyed a fantastic year of

:34:09. > :34:17.swimming, Fran Halsall and Sarah Sjostrom. And away they go. Fran

:34:18. > :34:23.Halsall seemed to get a very good start ahead of Sjoestroem. Ottesen

:34:24. > :34:27.for Denmark swimming very fast in the early stages. Al Gore has a

:34:28. > :34:31.distinct the early stages. Al Gore has a

:34:32. > :34:35.as they enter the closing stages. The blue cap of Fran Halsall. Can

:34:36. > :34:43.Sjoestroem get her back? Ottesen behind. Fran Halsall is European

:34:44. > :34:49.champion and she has beaten seals strum and Ottesen. What a tremendous

:34:50. > :34:54.week will stop Francesca Halsall, another big winner in the pool. What

:34:55. > :34:58.a stellar start Fran had, it was that start that made all the

:34:59. > :35:10.difference. The third medal of the week. Fran Halsall, URS die. -- you

:35:11. > :35:13.are a star. To get inmates is where it is close, get your hand on the

:35:14. > :35:18.wall first, dumping you have to make a habit of, you have got to want to

:35:19. > :35:24.do it. Especially in the 50. To win by such close margins and freestyle

:35:25. > :35:27.being so close. My race practice is going really well and I am looking

:35:28. > :35:33.forward to moving on in the future. This girl this week has been

:35:34. > :35:37.unbelievable, gold in the 50 backstroke, gold in the medley

:35:38. > :35:44.relay, another gold here on the 50 freestyle. Last night was not Fran

:35:45. > :35:50.Halsall's event so she went into it relaxed, tonight more pressure, but

:35:51. > :35:54.it did not seem to show. She was very relaxed going in. Surprise to

:35:55. > :35:58.have come out on top. It is her revenge, she is the fastest swimmer

:35:59. > :36:04.in the world this year, she won the Commonwealth Games then had to, to

:36:05. > :36:08.do job again. She looked like a pond skater in the pool. What do you mean

:36:09. > :36:12.she is like a pond skater? What you try to do when you swim along its

:36:13. > :36:16.pull yourself out of the water, as much of your body outside the water.

:36:17. > :36:22.The faster a speedboat goes the more of the body is outside the water.

:36:23. > :36:27.What you are trying to do is gate across the water. It worked, it

:36:28. > :36:35.worked forward to diet. -- it worked for her tonight. She's only 24 years

:36:36. > :36:41.of age, phenomenal. Well done, Fran Halsall, let's what Ben Proud can

:36:42. > :36:44.do. COMMENTATOR: Ben Proud will go for Great Britain, the 19-year-old

:36:45. > :36:52.in lane number five. What a task ahead of him, Florent Manaudou for

:36:53. > :36:57.France looks red hot at the moment. Proud was the last man to strip down

:36:58. > :37:00.on his blocks, Manaudou seemed to get a tremendous start. He has arms

:37:01. > :37:07.like trees as they powered through the water. Manaudou is relentless in

:37:08. > :37:10.his power here, he has the advantage over Ben Proud. Hard to see Ben

:37:11. > :37:16.Proud getting back. Manaudou looking class here as they come home.

:37:17. > :37:24.Manaudou is going to win it for France. Journey out in second, he

:37:25. > :37:29.has had a good week. And Finland in third place. A different class,

:37:30. > :37:33.Manaudou. He was, there he is, four gold medals for him this week. He

:37:34. > :37:37.has broken the competition record and is the fastest man in the world

:37:38. > :37:43.this year. He may swim with those straight arms, slightly unorthodox,

:37:44. > :37:56.but he gets the job done. Florent Manaudou is the winner from journey

:37:57. > :38:01.out and Liukkonen in third place. It is up against the machine, Manaudou.

:38:02. > :38:05.It looks like a beast, it is like a man against the boy in a sense. Ben

:38:06. > :38:09.Proud has a lot of muscle mass and speed, but he is younger than

:38:10. > :38:14.Manaudou. Ben Proud is new on the scene, Manaudou is the reigning

:38:15. > :38:20.Olympic champion, I expected him to win. We will hear a lot more about

:38:21. > :38:27.that boy, Ben Proud. Plenty more to come from Ben Proud. The next

:38:28. > :38:31.athlete has come back from China especially to take part in this

:38:32. > :38:36.event. The line-up dominated in the 50 metres breast wrote for women by

:38:37. > :38:47.the Lithuanian, 17 years old. She has had quite a week. There she

:38:48. > :38:49.goes. Of her body in the pool before the others leave the blocks, it

:38:50. > :39:07.would seem. Meiluttye should kick in now. The

:39:08. > :39:10.prize is definitely going to be hers. Brand cannot finish of

:39:11. > :39:32.strongly. It is all about the clock. Meilutyte strikes gold. What a

:39:33. > :39:38.future she has and what the presence she gives us. I am very pleased.

:39:39. > :39:48.Maybe the time was not as good as I hoped but I am happy to finish my

:39:49. > :39:54.season racing. A convincing victory by Meilutyte. Onto the women's 200

:39:55. > :39:57.meter butterfly final. A Spanish 1-2. As Belmonte Garcia set a new

:39:58. > :40:09.championship record to claim her second gold of the meat. -- of the

:40:10. > :40:14.meeting. With one gold in the bag already for Team GB, let's see what

:40:15. > :40:22.Roberto Pavoni can do in the men's hundred metre final. Max Litchfield

:40:23. > :40:33.has done very good to get here after a disappointing Commonwealth Games.

:40:34. > :40:39.Pavoni is in five. Next to him is Verraszto. The Germans in six and

:40:40. > :40:43.two. Max Litchfield is nearest to us, trying to get a good start, but

:40:44. > :40:48.you can see he is already a little bit behind as Pavoni goes off like a

:40:49. > :40:52.steam train. It is great to see this, early commitment on the 400

:40:53. > :40:56.metres individual medley. Such fine margins, you do not want to go off

:40:57. > :41:04.too fast, you want to be about 90-95%. It is good swimming. I am

:41:05. > :41:09.liking the look of Pavoni on this hundred metres butterfly at the

:41:10. > :41:13.start of this 100 IM. You have to play to your strengths. He is a

:41:14. > :41:20.quality swimmer. A nice low head position, making sure he is really

:41:21. > :41:25.efficient. Look at the rat so. He is saying no, I fancy this myself.

:41:26. > :41:30.Verraszto is drawing alongside him, perhaps knows he is ahead towards

:41:31. > :41:34.the halfway stage. It will be Verraszto for Hungary turning in

:41:35. > :41:40.front of Pavoni. Litchfield is still in the mix in third. He is swimming

:41:41. > :41:44.well, renewed confidence perhaps for him after that terrible experience

:41:45. > :41:47.he had in the Commonwealth Games. Onto the breaststroke and it is

:41:48. > :41:53.important that Pavoni can at least stay with, or hopefully get in front

:41:54. > :41:58.of, Verraszto. He has done himself a massive favour on the wall. Because

:41:59. > :42:02.he was behind but just on that wall work he got straight back into the

:42:03. > :42:05.race on level terms. Verraszto swimming quicker, Roberto needs a

:42:06. > :42:10.good turn. Looking great for a medal, the question is, can he win

:42:11. > :42:14.gold? Max Litchfield is nearest to us in third place and a little way

:42:15. > :42:19.in front of the fourth man. Verraszto sets the standard as they

:42:20. > :42:30.come down the pool again. He has moved almost a body length clear of

:42:31. > :42:36.Pavoni. Max Litchfield is in the mix for Great Britain in lane number

:42:37. > :42:42.one. We head towards the culmination of this final. Verraszto is a good

:42:43. > :42:47.freestyler, hard to see him not winning gold. It is, but I am

:42:48. > :42:51.excited about Max Litchfield. The one, Roberto Pavoni, your final

:42:52. > :42:55.hundred. Max Litchfield is having the swim of his life. He is a great

:42:56. > :43:00.freestyle swimmer, he has really performed in the 1500 in his life.

:43:01. > :43:06.It would be great if Great Britain can go to and three. Verraszto for

:43:07. > :43:09.Hungary lead the way. A length and a half to go. Verraszto is to metre

:43:10. > :43:18.clears up of only, looks as though Turrini is trying to come back. The

:43:19. > :43:20.final turn, the rat so, Pavoni and Turrini is now ahead of Litchfield,

:43:21. > :43:25.who really will have to dig Turrini is now ahead of Litchfield,

:43:26. > :43:29.wants a medal. Turrini might take on Pavoni. Pavoni is here to be

:43:30. > :43:35.committed early on in the race. Come on, Max Litchfield, the chance of a

:43:36. > :43:40.light Sunni lifetime, commit over the 25. Verraszto is going to win

:43:41. > :43:45.gold, not a shadow of a doubt. Looks like match Litchfield -- Max

:43:46. > :43:53.Litchfield will only just missed out. Turrini was third and Max

:43:54. > :43:57.Litchfield touches in fourth place. Well done, Roberto Pavoni, you said

:43:58. > :44:00.right at the start he gave it everything from the world go. The

:44:01. > :44:12.world go. Verraszto is just too strong. -- the word go.

:44:13. > :44:19.I am very satisfied with the place, I was hoping to be in a closer fight

:44:20. > :44:25.for the gold, but I did not have enough on the last 50 metres to

:44:26. > :44:31.catch him. I am happy with silver but was hoping for a tiny bit more

:44:32. > :44:35.at the time. Team GB almost had two medals, Litchfield missed out by

:44:36. > :44:40.half a second. Another medal for Roberto Pavoni. This time silver to

:44:41. > :44:45.add to his bronze. A fantastic swim, I am really pleased for him. It is a

:44:46. > :44:51.gruelling event. Another time close to his best. He fought hard towards

:44:52. > :44:56.the end. The more you race, the more experienced you will get. Now we

:44:57. > :45:00.have got him, Max and Wallace. Three guys potentially in the top five

:45:01. > :45:04.swimmers in the whole of Europe. We talk about success, they will be

:45:05. > :45:08.tired. They have had a gruelling summer. From the Commonwealth Games,

:45:09. > :45:14.leading into the European Championships, over four weeks, not

:45:15. > :45:17.just mentally, but physically, these guys never raced two major

:45:18. > :45:21.championships back-to-back. It is a learning experience. The more times

:45:22. > :45:24.they stand on the block and go through this process are more

:45:25. > :45:27.relaxed they become and the better they get at it. Hopefully the more

:45:28. > :45:31.times they are on the block, the more times they will be on the

:45:32. > :45:38.podium. Jazz Carlin goes in the 400 meter freestyle.

:45:39. > :45:50.Commentator macro, Mireia Belmonte is back in the pool. And Jazz Carlin

:45:51. > :45:55.is in Lane 6. Jazz Carlin is a way to the far side, just beyond the

:45:56. > :45:58.last of the yellow lane ropes. She did not appear to get the best

:45:59. > :46:05.start. Pellegrini starts well, definitely. Sharon Rouwendaal of the

:46:06. > :46:09.Netherlands has begun strongly. Jazz Carlin moving into contention,

:46:10. > :46:14.together with Melanie Costa Schmid, as they approach their first term,

:46:15. > :46:18.Melanie Costa Schmid, on the far side, possibly one of the leaders.

:46:19. > :46:23.The early stages of this intriguing 400 metres final. Melanie Costa

:46:24. > :46:29.Schmid still leading at the halfway stage. Mireia Belmonte in third

:46:30. > :46:34.place. Pellegrini a close fourth, and Sharon Rouwendaal in fifth

:46:35. > :46:37.place. Not too far off them. Lotte Friis has got work to do, a great

:46:38. > :46:43.distance swimmer but she has dropped right of them at the nearside in the

:46:44. > :46:48.white cap, and looks completely off it. Jazz Carlin is in front at 250.

:46:49. > :46:52.She has a narrow lead from Mireia Belmonte. Keep your fingers

:46:53. > :46:59.crossed. She is doing everything right. She is apart from her turns,

:47:00. > :47:03.freaking me out a bit. But Sharon Rouwendaal is the ten kilometre open

:47:04. > :47:09.water champion. She does not want for Sam and. But Mireia Belmonte,

:47:10. > :47:13.surely it is impossible she can do the 200 fly and 403 double in the

:47:14. > :47:19.same session? Jazz Carlin, what an opportunity with 100 metres to go.

:47:20. > :47:25.-- 403 double. Pellegrini has the speed by Jazz Carlin going into the

:47:26. > :47:30.turn and what a fantastic turn from Maria Belmondo, how is this

:47:31. > :47:33.possible? She is showing unbelievable technique and remained

:47:34. > :47:40.as bravery, Mireia Belmonte, and is a head in front of Jazz Carlin.

:47:41. > :47:43.Pellegrini, Sharon Rouwendaal and Melanie Costa Schmid there as well.

:47:44. > :47:48.Jazz Carlin tries to get back in front before the final turn. Jazz

:47:49. > :47:52.Carlin on the far side in the dark blue cap, and Mireia Belmonte turns

:47:53. > :47:57.almost alongside her. Sharon Rouwendaal is in contention as well.

:47:58. > :48:02.0.3 seconds and Pellegrini has a big finish. This is an epic. It is an

:48:03. > :48:07.Pellegrini has the speed. Mireia Belmonte is going to be tight but

:48:08. > :48:13.Jazz Carlin has gone to the head of the race and she has the legs and

:48:14. > :48:17.has the chance of doing the double. 2013 was a disaster for Jazz Carlin

:48:18. > :48:22.but 2014 is looking rosy. Sharon Rouwendaal coming back, a great

:48:23. > :48:30.finish, can Jazz Carlin hold on? She touches to take the European title.

:48:31. > :48:35.Sharon Rouwendaal second and Mireia Belmonte with an heroic swim into

:48:36. > :48:39.third place. Pellegrini out of the medals and Jazz Carlin's disbelief

:48:40. > :48:47.replaced by a beautiful smile and a tremendous swim. Jazz Carlin has one

:48:48. > :48:51.age Mendis, unforgettable, tremendous 400 metres freestyle. --

:48:52. > :48:55.she has won a tremendous. Unbelievable performance. She has

:48:56. > :48:57.broken the Welsh record on the way to winning the European

:48:58. > :49:03.Championship. I don't think she can quite believe it.

:49:04. > :49:07.I have moved it on from the Commonwealth Games and my times have

:49:08. > :49:14.been quicker. To come away with two gold medals is an incredible feeling

:49:15. > :49:24.to end the season. A new record for Jazz Carlin. The gold medallist,

:49:25. > :49:31.once again this week, and after the games in Glasgow, a summer that she

:49:32. > :49:36.will remember. STUDIO: Another gold for Jazz Carlin and another personal

:49:37. > :49:39.best by due thing she has even more? A lot more. One of the things I've

:49:40. > :49:43.noticed from the Commonwealth Games and here is the turn of speed at the

:49:44. > :49:47.end, she is so quicker which -- so much quicker, which is awesome but

:49:48. > :49:52.she cannot turn and how much does that lose on the opponents? It is

:49:53. > :49:56.kind of exciting, because you have 16 turns in 800 metres and it can

:49:57. > :50:00.make a lot of difference. It is exciting she has that much left to

:50:01. > :50:05.come. I am only slightly laughing because of what you has achieved a

:50:06. > :50:07.ready. Looking at the bigger picture, she can go up against

:50:08. > :50:12.Caitlin Hideki and she needs everything she can get. Doing the

:50:13. > :50:16.double here and winning the Commonwealth Games in world-class

:50:17. > :50:21.times is phenomenal. This is why I say you should coach but it is not

:50:22. > :50:27.my place to say. Let's move on to the women's four X 100 relay.

:50:28. > :50:37.COMMENTATOR: Denmark looked very strong. It is going to be Denmark at

:50:38. > :50:41.halfway with the lead. They are in front by half a second, Great

:50:42. > :50:46.Britain in third place, and going now is Jemma Lowe. She needs to hang

:50:47. > :50:50.in there. She does and Sweden and Italy are going to be strong

:50:51. > :50:56.finishers. Sweden has Sarah Sjostrom on the 100 fly and she is in the

:50:57. > :51:01.water right now. Ilaria Bianchi got a bronze medal in the 100 fly so

:51:02. > :51:08.Jemma Lowe needs a big leg to give Fran Halsall every chance. Jeanette

:51:09. > :51:12.Ottesen turns and Denmark's lead has grown and Italy have nudged past

:51:13. > :51:15.Great Britain into third place. Britain need to hang on and they

:51:16. > :51:20.have Fran Halsall to come on the final leg. Vanilla bloom will go

:51:21. > :51:28.over Denmark. Sweden will rely Michelle Coleman. They had for the

:51:29. > :51:35.closing stages. Erica Ferri only will go for Italy and it looks as

:51:36. > :51:39.though Britain will turn in third place but the gold medal has gone.

:51:40. > :51:41.Definitely but we will have a great race at the head because Michelle

:51:42. > :51:49.Coleman for Sweden, the bronze medallist, and then the Italian got

:51:50. > :51:55.fourth place. Heading down with 75 metres left ago to us, us, Sweden,

:51:56. > :52:00.then Denmark's white cap and Britain in third place on the far side. Fran

:52:01. > :52:03.Halsall doing her level best. She turns in third place, trying to hang

:52:04. > :52:07.on to hang onto the bronze medal ahead of the Netherlands, who are

:52:08. > :52:10.coming home strongly. A great scrap in third place, trying to hang onto

:52:11. > :52:12.the bronze medal ahead of the likes of the Netherlands, who are coming

:52:13. > :52:13.home strongly. A great scrap insulin Sweden's yellow cap and Denmark in

:52:14. > :52:23.the white. -- a great third place on the far side? Coming

:52:24. > :52:28.hard at her, but the battle for gold is between Denmark and Sweden and

:52:29. > :52:31.Denmark when, capping a great week, and Great Britain and Fran Halsall

:52:32. > :52:39.bringing home a bronze medal in third place. Denmark beat Sweden,

:52:40. > :52:43.not for the first time, Steve. You were right, they were the ones to

:52:44. > :52:45.beat. They will be waiting with bated breath because they got

:52:46. > :52:51.disqualified earlier in the week after winning the freestyle relay.

:52:52. > :52:56.It was close. Sweden ran them close the whole way. But Denmark, real

:52:57. > :53:00.qualities will mean this week. But Fran Halsall, bringing it home for

:53:01. > :53:05.Great Britain, and other medal. They can't stop winning medals. Denmark

:53:06. > :53:07.are the champions and Sweden with silver and Great Britain with

:53:08. > :53:17.bronze. A new European record for Denmark,

:53:18. > :53:21.who won the women's 100 metres relay medley. Bronze for the British

:53:22. > :53:25.girls. How useful is the relay for swimmers who are not in the best

:53:26. > :53:30.form, not winning medals? Is it a good chance to get confidence?

:53:31. > :53:33.Looking at Sophie earlier the week, she was injured a few days ago and

:53:34. > :53:37.she swam six seconds off her best time and she was close to her best

:53:38. > :53:41.again. For her, it is a great step forward. Jemma Lowe has not had the

:53:42. > :53:45.best meeting and walks away with a medal. Fran Halsall has got three

:53:46. > :53:50.medals already and gets another. And Georgia has got a couple as well. It

:53:51. > :53:55.is good for everyone. For Britain as a whole, it shows the strength in

:53:56. > :53:58.depth. Let's see what the men can do. In the Commonwealth Games, they

:53:59. > :54:00.blew the field away so let's see what they can do in the European

:54:01. > :54:14.competition. COMMENTATOR: France, with Adam Peaty

:54:15. > :54:18.trying to kick in, in second place as they head towards the halfway

:54:19. > :54:23.stage. France held the advantage over Adam Peaty who is swimming

:54:24. > :54:26.well. Adam Peaty has the lead. The French backpedalling slightly.

:54:27. > :54:31.Hungary and Germany behind them. This has been a tremendous second

:54:32. > :54:34.50, from Adam Peaty. And now, Britain is in front. They lead by

:54:35. > :54:38.over one second from France and Germany. Adam Barrett, a

:54:39. > :54:44.Commonwealth swim which he will never forget, helping to give

:54:45. > :54:50.England the Commonwealth gold. Now he needs to maintain form. Britain

:54:51. > :54:56.have a really good lead, now. That's right but don't count out France and

:54:57. > :55:01.Germany. Steffen Deibler was in the 100 fly final. Look at Adam Barrett

:55:02. > :55:04.go. He doing it again. He did it at the Commonwealth Games. He stepped

:55:05. > :55:10.up and delivered, there. If he can give Ben Proud a body length lead,

:55:11. > :55:13.they have every chance of winning the gold medal. Adam Barrett is

:55:14. > :55:18.doing it for Great Britain, 15 metres to go, he has to get his head

:55:19. > :55:22.down and get to the wall. Ben Proud will be nervous but he has do have a

:55:23. > :55:24.good takeover. Adam Barrett has given Great Britain a fantastic

:55:25. > :55:30.chance of ending the meeting in Berlin with a gold medal again.

:55:31. > :55:35.France in pursuit. 1.7 seconds behind. Now the battle is on. Can

:55:36. > :55:38.Ben Proud bring it home for Great Britain? Looking very good, 1.5

:55:39. > :55:44.metres clear from France and Hungary, who give chase. Look out

:55:45. > :55:50.because Fabien Gilot is the world champion in the freestyle relay. He

:55:51. > :55:54.knows how to bring it home. But surely Ben Proud has got too much?

:55:55. > :56:00.He has got the speed but does he have the stamina? 25 metres to go,

:56:01. > :56:05.hold on! France coming hard but Britain a metre in France still from

:56:06. > :56:08.France and Hungary. Great Britain and Ben Proud, maintaining form,

:56:09. > :56:13.France trying their best with Fabien Gilot in second place. But more

:56:14. > :56:16.successful Great Britain, who win European gold in the relay. Britain

:56:17. > :56:21.are too strong for France and Hungary. A brilliant way for the

:56:22. > :56:26.British team to enter the European Championships. Well done to them

:56:27. > :56:31.all. Ben Proud, Adam Peaty, Chris Walker-Hebborn but for me,

:56:32. > :56:32.particularly, Adam Barrett, who was relentless, remorseless, with his

:56:33. > :56:48.fly leg. Last night, we set a new record for

:56:49. > :56:53.the best European Championships ever. To come here and go on top of

:56:54. > :56:56.that was even better. Not a lot I can say. I am absolutely over the

:56:57. > :57:03.moon with the performance of the team. I am ready to go home now!

:57:04. > :57:05.Incredible reaction and an incredible performance which means

:57:06. > :57:09.that Ben Proud at Adam Barrett go home with gold medals as well.

:57:10. > :57:13.Fantastic way to finish the competition, and Team GB enter the

:57:14. > :57:19.European Championships at the top of the medal table, with 25 medals in

:57:20. > :57:20.total, ten of them gold. A brilliant performance, just a couple of years

:57:21. > :57:29.out from the Olympics. Joining us now is Bill Furness, the

:57:30. > :57:32.Team GB head coach. People have made a lot of the fact that Team GB was

:57:33. > :57:36.falling short of its targets a couple of years ago but now you are

:57:37. > :57:43.far exceeding them. You have been at the helm for 18 months. What has

:57:44. > :57:46.changed? Behaviours, Chris Spice and I, the performance directors, Aaron

:57:47. > :57:50.initial thought was to do it a British way. We are looking at

:57:51. > :57:54.world-class behaviours, whatever they are. We are getting everyone to

:57:55. > :57:57.do the best they can, all the time, in training and competition. I

:57:58. > :58:04.suppose the biggest change is that we are making them race more

:58:05. > :58:09.internationally. In the Commonwealth Games and this week, you can see we

:58:10. > :58:12.are tougher, difficult to beat. From my perspective, I have to make that

:58:13. > :58:16.a normal behaviour. For Great Britain, this is what we expect,

:58:17. > :58:19.swimming against the best nations in the world and expecting to win

:58:20. > :58:26.medals, it's pectin to win gold medals and breaking records. --

:58:27. > :58:29.expecting to win gold medals. We can then take that forward to the World

:58:30. > :58:34.Championships and Olympic Games. If it is important to raise, is it

:58:35. > :58:40.important to bring the whole team? Not everyone is here. Is it a shame?

:58:41. > :58:43.Not really because our top priority busy was the Commonwealth Games. We

:58:44. > :58:50.only brought 21 swimmers here on purpose. About a dozen of them are

:58:51. > :58:55.senior swimmers and we have brought some good juniors who have got a

:58:56. > :58:58.feeling for it and got medals. It has worked for us. The people who

:58:59. > :59:04.came here, they were very focused on doing well in both competitions. It

:59:05. > :59:07.is difficult to do. The people who were absolutely focused on the

:59:08. > :59:12.Commonwealth Games finished their season there, and start preparing

:59:13. > :59:17.for next season. It is easy to try to do too much. The athletes who did

:59:18. > :59:18.it here, a very small team but the biggest medal total, have done a

:59:19. > :59:29.great job. Thank you for joining us. And it was not just in swimming that

:59:30. > :59:35.Team GB did well. In diving, we got our first individual European diving

:59:36. > :59:39.gold since 1927. Victory in the ten metres platform on Friday. The

:59:40. > :59:46.Devonshire diversity of the title with five well executed routines,

:59:47. > :59:50.giving her a personal best of 363.7. I came here for a European medal. I

:59:51. > :59:55.wanted a gold medal but I did not expect it. This year has been pretty

:59:56. > :00:00.tough. I have had a lot of competitions. But it ended pretty

:00:01. > :00:05.well. Tom Daley secured silver in the ten metres platform final but

:00:06. > :00:07.was unable to defend his title at the European aquatic Championships

:00:08. > :00:14.in Berlin. The 20-year-old Commonwealth jump in finished with

:00:15. > :00:20.535.45. But the Russian managed 586.1, to take gold. I would

:00:21. > :00:24.535.45. But the Russian managed loved to have retained my title as

:00:25. > :00:27.European champion. But I am actually really pleased with the way I dived.

:00:28. > :00:33.Lots of positives in there. really pleased with the way I dived.

:00:34. > :00:38.them were around a ten and two of them were around seven. I could not

:00:39. > :00:41.afford to miss two dives with the standard of competition. Victor

:00:42. > :00:49.dived amazingly well. It was a nice contest and a good fight to the end.

:00:50. > :00:56.Congratulations to the diving team. Lots more sport to come on the BBC.

:00:57. > :01:15.The brothers showing the way once again. It is simply stunning. A

:01:16. > :01:23.wonderful performance. Geraint Thomas, what a superb victory. What

:01:24. > :01:29.a star. It is a golden floor routine. Plenty of great sport to

:01:30. > :01:35.come on the BBC. First is the youth Olympic aims in China. The highlight

:01:36. > :01:39.are on Saturday the 30th of August. Daily highlights on the red button

:01:40. > :01:42.from 9am. The world rowing Championships in the Netherlands are

:01:43. > :01:53.live with John in the Dale and Katherine Grainger. -- John

:01:54. > :01:56.Inverdale. If the swimming is anything to go by I recommend you to

:01:57. > :02:01.and into those sporting events. We have had a world record, personal

:02:02. > :02:06.bests, multiple European titles. This is a team that has had a torrid

:02:07. > :02:10.time, how will the mood be in the camp? The boys summed it up at the

:02:11. > :02:16.end, how excited and pumped they were. The whole team will be pumped.

:02:17. > :02:21.They all defended their titles from the Commonwealth Games. These are

:02:22. > :02:26.world-class wins. Are they world-class? Casual swimming fans

:02:27. > :02:31.will say there is no Australia, America, China, where does this put

:02:32. > :02:36.Team GB on the world stage? We were level with Australia on the medal

:02:37. > :02:40.table in the Commonwealth Games. We topped the medal table here.

:02:41. > :02:46.Watching Australia, America, Japan, of the bigger nations, looking at

:02:47. > :02:50.the rankings, our teams could conflict with those swings. Let's

:02:51. > :02:55.not get carried away, but let's get excited. It has been our catchphrase

:02:56. > :03:00.of the week, plenty more to come. It is fair to say in conclusion there

:03:01. > :03:03.is plenty more to come from Team GB, thanks for watching the European

:03:04. > :03:07.Championships with us. For now, goodbye.
