:02:05. > :02:13.And this will it be the theatre of the 2012 Olympics. Or we are in the
:02:13. > :02:19.Olympic Park. The beautiful curved roof has given it the nickname of
:02:19. > :02:25.the stingrays. The capacity will be 17,500 people but it can be reduced
:02:25. > :02:30.because of the yellow sections will come out and that will leave a
:02:30. > :02:35.capacity of 2,500. The whole thing will be left open for the community.
:02:35. > :02:41.It is the most beautiful scene. It makes you want to dive in. He had
:02:41. > :02:47.the diving pool and the diving platform where Tom Daley will make
:02:47. > :02:54.the first official dive. The opening ceremony is exactly one
:02:54. > :03:00.year from today. For the next two hours we will be here and having
:03:00. > :03:04.interviews with the Beijing silver medallists and bringing new all of
:03:04. > :03:09.the highlights from the World Championships in Shanghai. -- are
:03:09. > :03:15.bringing new. Michael Phelps has not won a gold
:03:15. > :03:18.for yet but this is his event. He goes for a title number five.
:03:19. > :03:23.Frederica Pellegrini won gold at the last world championships and
:03:23. > :03:33.she defends her title this afternoon. Jemma Spoforth has had a
:03:33. > :03:35.
:03:35. > :03:42.disappointing week. With me here is Mark Foster. You
:03:43. > :03:47.will be diving into this pool later? It will be the first
:03:47. > :03:55.official race. There will be lots of other swimmers in there. It will
:03:55. > :04:03.be a fun race. He wants to make sure you set the record? I hope so.
:04:03. > :04:09.25 years will have gone down the drain if not. I saw you in a bikini
:04:09. > :04:18.earlier. You made the first tile here, one of the first trials.
:04:18. > :04:24.was about the -- about a year ago. I have done when a fitting before
:04:24. > :04:28.and this was my first attempt at tiling. I can fix any problem in
:04:28. > :04:35.the bathroom. If there is a leak they might be coming to knock at my
:04:35. > :04:42.door a. What do you make of this as a venue? I think it is wonderful.
:04:42. > :04:47.The big thing for me was standing there and seeing the wings go up. I
:04:47. > :04:52.think, as a home athlete knowing that 16,000 people will be
:04:52. > :04:56.supporting me, what is coming up is going to be unbelievably special
:04:56. > :05:04.for everybody. Home Games are fantastic. It must make you wish
:05:04. > :05:11.that you could have home -- held arm. I would have loved to have
:05:11. > :05:16.done that. At the end of my career, I competed for 23 years, and the
:05:16. > :05:20.most important ones were the ones at home. When you are young you
:05:20. > :05:24.want to travel and go to Australia and America but at the end of my
:05:24. > :05:31.career I wanted to stay home so my friends and family could come and
:05:31. > :05:37.watch. It is a convert. It is going to be sensational. -- it is a
:05:37. > :05:46.comfort. He do you expect to be standing here in one year? I think
:05:46. > :05:52.Michael Phelps will be there. I also think we will see thought back.
:05:52. > :05:57.-- Ian Thorpe. Of course Rebecca Adlington. That will be very
:05:57. > :06:03.exciting. Michael Phelps did such an extraordinary thing in Beijing
:06:03. > :06:12.and won eight gold medals. When you have been that high it is very hard
:06:12. > :06:18.four years later to motivate yourself. When he went for six in
:06:18. > :06:23.Athens, that was the thing that drove him to go for eight medals.
:06:23. > :06:28.It was a butterfly finish at the end. America should have won in the
:06:28. > :06:37.relay. He has done six and he has done eight and he will not go for
:06:37. > :06:41.any more. 14 Olympic medals, where does the motivation come from? If
:06:41. > :06:46.he needs any motivation, he has been beaten, and he will come back
:06:46. > :06:53.stronger than before. We will see Michael Phelps not too far off in
:06:53. > :06:58.the final of the 200m butterfly, which is his event. He needs to
:06:58. > :07:04.prove himself. To make the decision to come back is a huge risk. This
:07:04. > :07:10.is what will shock me. I did this because I loved it and I enjoyed it
:07:10. > :07:15.and being a sportsman is the best thing in the war. -- in the world.
:07:15. > :07:20.Ian Thorpe went on to the Olympic Games and won three gold medals and
:07:20. > :07:26.then won medals in Athens as well. He maintained his title and won
:07:26. > :07:32.again. He did not have anything to prove. His big race was in Athens
:07:32. > :07:37.at the age of 21 but I have always wondered how much more he could
:07:37. > :07:42.have done. He walked away before it was too late. But he always loves
:07:42. > :07:50.coming to London and I think that has spurred him. We will have more
:07:50. > :07:58.discussions about that in one year. In turns of events in Shanghai, we
:07:58. > :08:03.have the 100m coming up. We have been talking a lot about Cesar
:08:03. > :08:08.Cielo Filho. There is a mixed feeling about his emotional win. He
:08:08. > :08:15.has tested positive for a banned substance. There are two trains of
:08:15. > :08:19.thought. I think when the world governing body and the world giving
:08:19. > :08:23.system make a policy where if you test positive for something that is
:08:23. > :08:30.it, I think the onus is on the athletes themselves. What they put
:08:30. > :08:35.on their body is up to them. If it has got a simulant in it you will
:08:35. > :08:38.lose weight and you should get it checked out. I am not saying that
:08:38. > :08:43.he cheated deliberately but he should have been more careful. He
:08:43. > :08:51.is not a schoolboy's winner. There is a mixed feeling and I think it
:08:51. > :09:01.will be interesting to see what is going to happen in the next few
:09:01. > :09:11.
:09:11. > :09:19.days. -- schoolboy a swimmer. freestyle. We can see that the
:09:19. > :09:25.champion Cesar Cielo Filho is in five. The slowest of the qualifiers,
:09:25. > :09:31.James Roberts of Australia. The slowest but he has a gold medal
:09:31. > :09:41.already. He had a stunning race recently. The gold medal on the 400
:09:41. > :09:45.
:09:45. > :09:52.freestyle, tied one Park. -- Park Tae-Hwan. Nikita Lobinstev wine
:09:52. > :10:02.five years ago and he is back again. This chap from South Africa for
:10:02. > :10:07.
:10:07. > :10:17.trains over in the States. Now we have any in Adrian from the USA. He
:10:17. > :10:24.is a champion at the 100m freestyle. Now here is the fastest man in
:10:24. > :10:28.water in history, Cesar Cielo Filho. The world record holder in the 150
:10:28. > :10:38.but not the fastest qualifier because James Magnussen did that in
:10:38. > :10:46.
:10:46. > :10:53.fine form. 47.49. We know that he has got 0.07 for sure. Michael
:10:53. > :11:02.Phelps is doing a lead off against him. He said he was excited to see
:11:02. > :11:07.such exciting talent coming through at such a young age. He beat Phelps
:11:07. > :11:17.by half a second, I believe. first indication that Michael
:11:17. > :11:22.
:11:22. > :11:29.Phelps may not be on top form in freestyle has gotten under way. The
:11:29. > :11:38.Olympic champion and the world champion. Cesar Cielo Filho is in
:11:38. > :11:45.the black cap. We expected him out very quickly. 4th fate looks like
:11:45. > :11:55.lane set for -- lane six will turn quickly. Nowhere near a world
:11:55. > :11:59.
:11:59. > :12:08.record. I am not surprised that he looks so good. The world record
:12:08. > :12:17.holder does have some work to do. He takes eight, 47.9. James
:12:17. > :12:25.Magnussen takes it. Adrian takes second and the world record holder
:12:25. > :12:31.in third. We have seen some really on his staff here. James Magnussen
:12:31. > :12:41.was very slow for the first five metres. He is going to have to work
:12:41. > :12:48.on that. He came back very strongly. Had a lot left in his tank. Here he
:12:48. > :12:56.is just teaching -- touching out Adrian. He swam fantastically on
:12:56. > :13:01.the relay. James Magnussen has won the first semi-final. Adrian is in
:13:01. > :13:11.second and Cesar Cielo Filho in third. The second semi-final is
:13:11. > :13:12.
:13:12. > :13:22.really stacked. It will be difficult to choose this one. We
:13:22. > :13:23.
:13:23. > :13:33.have a grammar more in lane two. Five and six will be capable of
:13:33. > :13:37.
:13:37. > :13:47.this semi-final. The French pride themselves on sprint but they have
:13:47. > :13:47.
:13:47. > :13:52.not delivered. Silver, silver everywhere. Here is the lowest seed
:13:53. > :13:59.for this second semi-final. Now we have the young at 21-year-old
:13:59. > :14:09.Italian who is a world junior champion. We have a tie for the
:14:09. > :14:19.
:14:19. > :14:29.gold medal. This chap did it and he is in 7th. The South African is out
:14:29. > :14:30.
:14:30. > :14:35.unbelievably quick this morning. The swimmer from Holland has a
:14:35. > :14:45.lifetime best to qualify. Anything is possible after a slightly slower
:14:45. > :14:48.
:14:48. > :14:55.heat. We have the second Frenchman there. Relatively slow said this
:14:55. > :15:05.will be interesting. The two French guys will pull each other on. We
:15:05. > :15:06.
:15:06. > :15:16.have the younger of the two. He is a couple years older. An intense
:15:16. > :15:18.
:15:18. > :15:28.time in 2007 but he's not really been on form since then. War macro
:15:28. > :15:55.
:15:55. > :15:58.years is quite a while not have Africa was moving a little bit. We
:15:58. > :16:03.have to see whether the start of thought he was moving or not. If he
:16:03. > :16:13.was, he will be disqualified at the end of the race. He got a great
:16:13. > :16:31.
:16:31. > :16:35.from the bottom, he looks pretty good. Heavens above, who's going to
:16:35. > :16:39.get this one? If they can go under 48 they are going to get through.
:16:39. > :16:46.They are very slow again. This is going to be really tight to make
:16:46. > :16:53.the final. Some big guns are going to miss out. Meynard won it. Hayden
:16:53. > :17:00.was second. Magnini was 7th. But he was only a 10th behind third.
:17:00. > :17:09.took sub 49 to make these semi- finals. 48.99 the last one in. 16
:17:09. > :17:13.men under 49. A pretty much done similar sort of times. -- they've
:17:13. > :17:19.pretty much done similar sorts of times. There's not much room for
:17:19. > :17:29.error. Even in the heats, these guys know they have to put in fast
:17:29. > :18:01.
:18:01. > :18:04.times and they are not improving Very disappointing that Simon
:18:04. > :18:09.Burnett and Adam Brown on not in the semi-finals. I'll discuss that
:18:09. > :18:13.with Mark Foster. They are testing everything today, and we've had
:18:13. > :18:17.swimmers in the pool from the local Newham at swimming group. That's
:18:17. > :18:20.the borough we are in. In the diving pool we've got the
:18:20. > :18:24.synchronised swimming British team doing a demonstration. It's very
:18:24. > :18:28.noisy. Simon Bennett interestingly said, he was a silver medallist at
:18:28. > :18:31.the Commonwealth Games at this distance, he said the death of the
:18:31. > :18:36.field at the World Championships is a much stronger than it has been in
:18:36. > :18:40.past years. What's happening is the Times, take the suits out of the
:18:40. > :18:44.way, the Times aren't getting faster at the top. It's getting
:18:44. > :18:47.faster but by tiny amounts. Everyone is squeezing up at the top.
:18:47. > :18:50.If you look back at the Commonwealth Games last year, his
:18:50. > :18:54.time would have just been outside the final, but it would have made
:18:55. > :18:59.him through to the semi-finals. This morning he was 25th. He was
:18:59. > :19:02.talking about the depth, those 25 people. It is tight but he's just
:19:02. > :19:06.got to be performing at his best in the morning to make the next round.
:19:06. > :19:16.Let's move on to the women's 50 metre backstroke semi-finals. You
:19:16. > :19:24.
:19:24. > :19:34.will see Gemma Spofforth and George Franklin of the USA, I think she
:19:34. > :20:08.
:20:08. > :20:14.just got it. Very close indeed. Franklin came back very fast. I was
:20:14. > :20:24.getting a bit worried, might call was miles out. She was 7th until
:20:24. > :20:35.
:20:35. > :20:39.The underwater is so fast. All the strokes, the fly kicks. Although
:20:39. > :20:49.breaststroke is the one where you are not allowed to do a lot of them,
:20:49. > :21:26.
:21:26. > :21:29.London. There is Phelps. He's not in the second semi-final of the
:21:29. > :21:39.women's 50 backstroke. I'm not quite sure why Chinese TV is
:21:39. > :21:40.
:21:40. > :21:45.showing that. He is taking on two Chinese. Peng Wu has beaten him
:21:46. > :21:52.twice in America on his home soil. There is a big expectation for Peng
:21:52. > :21:58.Wu. I don't know, Phelps can't let too many slip away, can he? Well,
:21:58. > :22:08.it's the evening of day four and Michael Phelps has not yet won a
:22:08. > :22:19.
:22:20. > :22:25.gold medal. We are halfway through I'll, that's Georgia Davies.
:22:25. > :22:34.Georgia Davies in lane two. She looked very good in the heats.
:22:34. > :22:44.Pelton, just 17 years old. The third fastest qualifier for this
:22:44. > :22:52.
:22:52. > :23:01.Championships in Rome and a silver six years ago. She is quick, but
:23:01. > :23:07.whether she's going to be quick here or not... Wait and see.
:23:07. > :23:11.Herasimenia in six. Drakou of Greece in seven. Then Gemma
:23:11. > :23:16.Spofforth. We haven't seen the best of her, she's had a tough year.
:23:16. > :23:21.Absolutely. It was suggested she was ill last weekend, I'm not sure
:23:21. > :23:24.what that is. She's obviously not on top form. She trains with Ryan
:23:24. > :23:34.Lochte over in Florida. She had a message of support from him
:23:34. > :23:47.
:23:47. > :23:57.overnight. She's got her work cut to make it through. Zueva of Russia
:23:57. > :24:29.
:24:29. > :24:39.and the water than I expected there. Really close. On the finish it
:24:39. > :24:42.
:24:42. > :24:52.looks like a Herasimenia. Zueva got it. It's going to be really tight.
:24:52. > :24:52.
:24:52. > :24:58.27.88. Then they are all 28.0. Georgia Davies swimming well but
:24:58. > :25:08.not well enough. What a fantastic shot. Arching their back, head back.
:25:08. > :25:09.
:25:09. > :25:19.You get those 15 metres of kicking in. Chang Gao is probably going to
:25:19. > :25:59.
:25:59. > :26:03.the final from that second semi- You are still the world record
:26:03. > :26:07.holder, one-year today exactly to go. What are your plans? I'm going
:26:07. > :26:12.back to the States, I'm not taking a break. I'm just going to get fit
:26:12. > :26:16.again this year. It hasn't gone to plan at all. I can't just blame it
:26:16. > :26:19.on the food poisoning, that's just one little thing. The rest of the
:26:19. > :26:23.Earth needs a lot more fine-tuning. I'm going to go back and really get
:26:23. > :26:27.in shape and look to 2012 was a queue are not the sort of person he
:26:27. > :26:31.dishes out excuses, but it's been a very hard here. It's in you to go
:26:31. > :26:36.back and get stuck in to some hard work. We will see you in London.
:26:37. > :26:40.Definitely. Before the heat this morning I had a lot of decisions. I
:26:40. > :26:44.was really on the edge as to whether I would quit and not do
:26:44. > :26:48.this final year. Now it's 100 % commitment and we are coming back
:26:48. > :26:54.next year. It's fantastic to see you in there. It's great you are
:26:54. > :26:59.here. Yeah, I didn't expect to be here. I'm really pleased. Although
:26:59. > :27:04.I'm disappointed with the time I did there, it's all experience.
:27:04. > :27:08.I've just got to keep motivated and keep training and globally next
:27:08. > :27:12.year I will be on top form. Last year, you broke internationally
:27:12. > :27:18.into winning medals. Then there was a fuss of trials where things went
:27:18. > :27:22.slightly askew. But you got added to the list at the last moment.
:27:22. > :27:25.Yeah. Things didn't go quite to plan at trials, although we did
:27:25. > :27:29.some good times. I took that away with me, so I'm really pleased
:27:29. > :27:34.about that. It's given me confidence. I need to make sure I
:27:34. > :27:38.don't make silly mistakes and hopefully repeat those times again.
:27:38. > :27:45.Very strong words from Gemma Spofforth there. I'm delighted to
:27:46. > :27:51.say that Lord Cole is with me here, looking down on this glorious venue.
:27:51. > :27:56.-- Lord Coe. It's extraordinary. Everyone is reacting very
:27:57. > :28:00.positively. Yes, they are. The competitors and the young kids from
:28:00. > :28:04.the Newham swimming club. Historically, they will always be
:28:04. > :28:09.able to say they were the first competitors in the pool. It's an
:28:10. > :28:13.extraordinary story. I'm really proud today because so many things
:28:13. > :28:18.have happened in this area, so many things have happened in this
:28:18. > :28:21.borough. But sport is at the heart of it. I guess for those of us, you
:28:22. > :28:26.know what I'm saying here, for those of us that had been in sport
:28:26. > :28:31.all our lives, it's just a great demonstration of what sport can do.
:28:31. > :28:36.You actually sound and look very emotional. We start about seven
:28:36. > :28:40.years ago. Three of us all sitting in the pub thinking, it's quite a
:28:40. > :28:45.nice thing to think about. You end up with an organisation of 6000
:28:45. > :28:50.people. But along the way you leave things like this. It just seems
:28:50. > :28:53.right today. As an athlete, you will have all been about preparing
:28:53. > :29:01.for the big event and giving yourself a timetable. What happens
:29:01. > :29:07.in this role for you in the next year? I guess you can take the man
:29:07. > :29:11.out of competition but you never take the athlete out of the life of.
:29:11. > :29:15.For me, it's now about making sure this really works for the
:29:15. > :29:18.competitors. Every time you see a young swimmer in a pool, you know
:29:18. > :29:23.that they've spent half their young lives getting there. So this has
:29:23. > :29:27.got to work. Its testing and testing. Just making sure that at
:29:27. > :29:30.the end of the competition they may be able to turn to me and say, I
:29:30. > :29:33.didn't have the greatest competition, I didn't have the
:29:33. > :29:36.greatest Olympics, but there's nothing that you guys did other
:29:36. > :29:40.than to help me perform at the highest level. For me, that's why
:29:40. > :29:46.we get up in the morning. Tom Daley is going to do the first official
:29:46. > :29:50.dive from that ten-metre platform later today. That is as huge height
:29:50. > :29:56.when you stand below it. It is when you stand up there - have you been
:29:56. > :29:59.up there? It's like most things in sport. When you get really close up
:29:59. > :30:03.to it is extraordinary what he does off that height. It is amazing. You
:30:03. > :30:08.will allow him as much access as he needs some people get very familiar
:30:08. > :30:16.with it? Yes. Will he get his own key to the place? We might even
:30:16. > :30:20.name it after him if he wins! would be absolutely worthwhile. We
:30:20. > :30:24.genuinely cant see it in your face, the motion that this inspires. And
:30:24. > :30:29.very different to be inspired by a place rather than by a sporting
:30:29. > :30:35.event. It must be really... This is a very different experience for you.
:30:35. > :30:42.Yes, it is. As I said, seven years ago we were standing on a parcel of
:30:42. > :30:46.land that was contaminated, rivers that were filthy. An area that had
:30:46. > :30:51.been neglected for far too long. It probably shouldn't have taken the
:30:51. > :30:57.Olympic Games to have done that, if we are being honest, but it has.
:30:58. > :31:02.Once the games have gone and the wings disappear, we are left with a
:31:02. > :31:05.fantastic community facility, but a facility that I hope stages world
:31:05. > :31:14.swimming championships, European swimming championships in years to
:31:14. > :31:19.It is amazing to see all of the photographers that have assembled
:31:19. > :31:24.by the side of the pool. But it is about the competition and it does
:31:24. > :31:34.not matter if you have world titles galore, nothing can compare to
:31:34. > :31:37.having an Olympics in your own country. A year to go until 2012.
:31:37. > :31:45.Everyone wants the chance to compete at a home Olympics. When
:31:45. > :31:51.you dream about it it gives you goose bumps. It is a special moment.
:31:51. > :31:56.It is pretty exciting to think what could happen. It is amazing and
:31:56. > :32:03.exciting. It is not too far away. If I qualify for the Olympics and
:32:03. > :32:09.then I will be the most happy girl on the plastic -- planet. I can do
:32:09. > :32:16.myself proud now. I am thinking about winning, desire, passion and
:32:16. > :32:22.motivation. Good to start in one piece. I got a silver medal in
:32:22. > :32:26.Athens. I can only imagine what getting a gold will feel like.
:32:26. > :32:31.win a gold medal on home waters would be an incredible achievement.
:32:31. > :32:37.So will really excited and still really loving the journey. It is
:32:37. > :32:42.just a privileged to be able to do this again. When you say a year to
:32:42. > :32:48.go, I think you get a slight rush of adrenalin, and you think, bring
:32:48. > :32:55.it on. I think that we just need to go out there and enjoy it and do
:32:55. > :33:05.what we do best. Absolutely fantastic. I cannot wait until the
:33:05. > :33:09.
:33:09. > :33:13.Olympics come to our shores. Cool, tingly. You heard that Jemma
:33:13. > :33:18.Spoforth was feeling really bad about herself. She was thinking
:33:18. > :33:26.about walking away from the sport altogether but she felt that she
:33:26. > :33:31.was too good to walk away. She has got a lot of people around her
:33:31. > :33:38.saying that, at two years ago, she was four seconds faster, that does
:33:38. > :33:42.not go away. Her mother has died and her dad's girlfriend has died.
:33:42. > :33:48.These things affect people in different ways. Her mind that is
:33:48. > :33:52.probably different. She is coming from a low and getting back. She
:33:52. > :33:58.came from nowhere to be a world champion and she has to use that
:33:58. > :34:04.drive. She will be here and I have no doubt that she will be one of
:34:04. > :34:10.the people standing on a podium. hope so. Every athlete goes through
:34:10. > :34:15.these horrible low points of but to have it happens so public a --
:34:16. > :34:20.publicly. Some people have injuries and operations and never come back.
:34:20. > :34:25.People expect so much. People expect more and more. They put a
:34:25. > :34:30.lot of pressure on you and you put pressure on yourself. She is so far
:34:30. > :34:34.away from home and she is thinking that she should be home. She is
:34:34. > :34:40.completely distracted away from what she should be doing. She
:34:40. > :34:46.should be focusing on the water. I think she should come with the team,
:34:46. > :34:52.the gritters team, they should come into this environment. -- the
:34:52. > :34:56.British team. We wish her well in her recovery because it is a low
:34:56. > :35:01.point for her right now. For another swimmer looking for added
:35:02. > :35:06.motivation is Michael Phelps. He has a bronze medal from the relay
:35:06. > :35:11.and a silver medal because Ryan Lochte beat him and the 200m
:35:11. > :35:21.freestyle. Now it is the 200 metres butterfly. Has felt still got what
:35:21. > :35:35.
:35:35. > :35:40.it takes? We will find out very Michael Phelps is not looking well.
:35:40. > :35:49.He has got all of his energy stacked up in the final which is
:35:49. > :35:54.important. We have Takeshi Matsuda in line for next to him. Wu Peng
:35:54. > :36:04.has been him twice in America. He has a couple of good big guys are
:36:04. > :36:12.
:36:12. > :36:22.medallist last year. The medals could go to any of these eight
:36:22. > :36:26.
:36:26. > :36:35.names. I can make a good case for gold on all of them. Here is Chad
:36:35. > :36:40.le Clos. He has been improving year on year. This guy is the new
:36:40. > :36:44.European junior champion, the 18- year-old. He looks really good. He
:36:44. > :36:54.looks like one of those wind-up toys that goes around and around.
:36:54. > :37:04.Wu Peng, China. Massive ovation. He has based himself in the state now.
:37:04. > :37:11.Bronze in 2005 and silver in 2007. Here comes Dinko Jukic. He has got
:37:11. > :37:15.to step up now. He is right next to the Chinese man in lane two, it is
:37:15. > :37:22.Michael Phelps. 28 world championship medals. He has won
:37:22. > :37:30.this race. He won in 2001 and 2003 and 2009. No one in history has won
:37:30. > :37:35.the same race five times. The second Chinese man, Chen Yin. He
:37:35. > :37:41.has not been on great form for a while. He missed the final two
:37:41. > :37:48.years ago. And Japan is very excited about Takeshi Matsuda. What
:37:48. > :37:55.a chance he has got. A great chance. He is on great form. The ultimate
:37:55. > :38:05.carrot for this is that he will go to 2012. There is a lot on the line
:38:05. > :38:05.
:38:05. > :38:09.for him. Not on the scale of Michael Phelps. He came onto the
:38:09. > :38:13.international scene when he was 15 and impressed everyone so much. He
:38:13. > :38:23.will find it hard to see himself lose in his signature race but
:38:23. > :38:25.
:38:26. > :38:32.like a bit of a wounded animal. You do not have that swagger that you
:38:32. > :38:42.usually see from Michael Phelps. Could someone else be world
:38:42. > :38:48.
:38:48. > :38:58.the men's 200m butterfly. Michael Phelps gets an absolutely cracking
:38:58. > :38:58.
:38:58. > :39:03.start. Takeshi Matsuda and is in for. He is close to Phelps. He is
:39:03. > :39:07.half a metre down on the start. was thinking that this morning. He
:39:07. > :39:14.is a lot smaller. He does not quite have the power under what are that
:39:14. > :39:23.Phelps has. Takeshi Matsuda is going with him. Chad le Clos at the
:39:23. > :39:28.top. He is having a look over at fops. Takeshi Matsuda F is right on
:39:28. > :39:35.-- is right on the shoulder of Michael Phelps. Takeshi Matsuda is
:39:35. > :39:41.a dog at swimming. He will still keep going. That is good. He looks
:39:42. > :39:46.really good. This is going to be exciting. Michael Phelps goes first
:39:46. > :39:50.and Takeshi Matsuda second. Chad le Clos is in there. Phelps has gone
:39:50. > :39:55.reasonably early here. He normally tries to wind it up but he has gone
:39:56. > :40:05.early. Takeshi Matsuda is going with him. I am worried for Phelps
:40:06. > :40:08.
:40:08. > :40:11.here. The bronze medal, you have got Dinko Jukic down here. Takeshi
:40:11. > :40:19.Matsuda is almost neck-and-neck with him. Has he got the training
:40:19. > :40:25.and fitness? Phelps is looking good. Fells as starting to make a move.
:40:25. > :40:30.The rest of the field are coming back. -- felt the starting. Else is
:40:30. > :40:36.tightening up. It looks like Phelps is going to hold on. It is his race.
:40:36. > :40:40.This is going to be a massive win for Michael Phelps. Five times
:40:40. > :40:49.world champion in the men's 200 metres butterfly. The first time
:40:49. > :40:59.anyone has done that in history. There is his mother. She is so
:40:59. > :41:04.
:41:04. > :41:08.happy. That is not the Michael Phelps we know. Fascinating. He is
:41:08. > :41:14.not in the best shape. He said that before he came in. He has been
:41:14. > :41:20.struggling for motivation. Who could blame him? 2000 and was a bit
:41:20. > :41:29.of a dead year for him. -- 2010. He knows what he has to do. More
:41:29. > :41:36.training this winter for many a little less. His coach made a
:41:36. > :41:42.humorous comments earlier. He said that he had a life but now he does
:41:42. > :41:49.not because he has become a swimmer. I think he is deadly serious about
:41:49. > :41:52.London. I think he has realised that the world is competitive. He
:41:52. > :41:57.lost that freestyle with Ryan Lochte and he was talking about the
:41:57. > :42:03.job he had to do and that he was committed. There is his mum. There
:42:03. > :42:08.is his sister. I think that maybe his girlfriend as well. Michael
:42:08. > :42:15.Phelps, for the 5th time, is the champion on the men's 200m
:42:15. > :42:25.butterfly. It was a toff and classes swim. Wu Peng got the third
:42:25. > :42:29.
:42:29. > :42:33.So the answer is, yes, he has still got it. Unbelievable determination
:42:33. > :42:38.from Michael Phelps. I wonder if it was just sheer desire and guts that
:42:38. > :42:46.got him through. He is not on the top of his game. He was heard by
:42:46. > :42:54.losing to Ryan Lochte. That was his event. -- he was hurt. That
:42:54. > :43:00.freestyle was always his number one event. It hurt him and that -- a
:43:00. > :43:06.lot. Now he knows how it feels. We have seen the human side of him. I
:43:06. > :43:11.think this year it will be good for him to not have a good year.
:43:11. > :43:21.coach has been going on about him. He says that he has to stop
:43:21. > :43:22.
:43:22. > :43:24.scoffing and things and concentrate distractions. He was a superstar
:43:24. > :43:28.before the Beijing Olympics and then he became an even bigger
:43:28. > :43:34.superstar. There is a lot of pressure on him from outside
:43:34. > :43:40.sponsors. America is a big place. You get distracted. You think that
:43:40. > :43:45.the pool is not everything any more. Now he will get back in and train
:43:45. > :43:49.incredibly hard. I think he will be dangerous for next year. Now he has
:43:49. > :43:53.a chance to stand up on the medal podium and here the national anthem
:43:53. > :44:03.being played for his family and friends who are there for support.
:44:03. > :44:04.
:44:04. > :44:07.It's very difficult to get interviews with Michael Phelps
:44:07. > :44:11.after these things, but his reaction to this would have been
:44:11. > :44:15.really interesting. Because it certainly was not a certainty, even
:44:15. > :44:20.in the event in which he specialises. Lots of people here
:44:20. > :44:24.today, among them David Davis, a silver medallist in open water from
:44:24. > :44:28.Beijing. Your reaction to this place? It's amazing. I walked in
:44:28. > :44:36.and you feel the buzz when you walk into these venues. I definitely
:44:36. > :44:39.have that today. It's like a mini camper at the swimming pool. Mark
:44:39. > :44:44.was saying it would be really motivational for a lot of the
:44:44. > :44:48.British swimmers to come here and take it in. Absolutely. I walked in
:44:48. > :44:51.and I definitely thought, this is great, I'd love to be part of it.
:44:51. > :44:55.Get the work done throughout the winter and hopefully be on the team
:44:55. > :45:00.next year. This is when it sinks in, what it's going to be like next
:45:00. > :45:04.year. The options for you would have been 1500m. You could have
:45:04. > :45:08.gone to Shanghai and swum that, couldn't you? Yeah, I've had a bit
:45:08. > :45:11.of a tough year and decided to take a break from the pool to put things
:45:11. > :45:15.right for next year. That's the best thing I've done. Luckily, I've
:45:15. > :45:19.got another chance at the open water as well. I need to get the
:45:19. > :45:23.fitness and form back and then swim with a chance here in March next
:45:23. > :45:27.year to give me the option of going for the pool or open water as well.
:45:27. > :45:33.Is there an instance where you could do both? A got a qualified
:45:33. > :45:37.for the open water via the 1500m. I have this won well here in March.
:45:37. > :45:44.I'd love to do both, I love to be involved with this. But if it makes
:45:44. > :45:47.sense to us to do the one, that's what I will do. A remember being
:45:47. > :45:51.there and seen you get out of the water. You will almost delirious
:45:51. > :45:56.with exhaustion. I was just coming to turns with it then. It's a
:45:56. > :46:00.really demanding race. It's hard work. At that end it I didn't
:46:00. > :46:04.really know where I was going. That is what cost me in the end.
:46:04. > :46:10.Hopefully I can be there in London. I will get more experience on me
:46:10. > :46:13.and see what happens. What will guide you, the event in which you
:46:13. > :46:17.have the best chance of getting a medal is the one you can
:46:17. > :46:21.concentrate on? There's not that much difference between the two. We
:46:21. > :46:25.do the same training as we do when we were poor swimmers. We just
:46:25. > :46:27.learn to deal with the different experiences of it all. The
:46:27. > :46:31.difference is whether you want to put all your eggs in one basket or
:46:31. > :46:36.whether you will have a go at the poor as well. Are you going to get
:46:36. > :46:43.a chance to swim in the pool today? I've brought my trunks! I'd love to
:46:43. > :46:46.have a go. Great to see you here. Good luck. I hope things start to
:46:46. > :46:52.go well again for you and you recover physically. I'm not
:46:52. > :46:55.surprised you are exhausted, the amount of lengths he does.
:46:55. > :46:58.Hopefully he will be here either in the Poor Law in the Serpentine,
:46:58. > :47:03.which is where the open-water swimming is taking place in a
:47:03. > :47:06.year's time. A real battle on in the 200 metre freestyle women's
:47:06. > :47:10.between Federica Pellegrini, of Italy, who is the world champion,
:47:10. > :47:20.and a young Dutch sprinter who has all speed on her side, but can she
:47:20. > :47:45.
:47:45. > :47:50.slammer great heat, but if she can rub peaked this when she did in the
:47:50. > :48:00.heats, anything can happen there. She trains with Michael Phelps,
:48:00. > :48:07.
:48:07. > :48:09.Pottermore. A third North Voldemort Swimming Club swimmer who is
:48:09. > :48:16.winning in this final session of the world championships this
:48:16. > :48:26.evening. Michael Phelps is one of the others as well, it's not too
:48:26. > :48:32.
:48:32. > :48:35.bad! The 17-year-old German, Lippok, in one. Barratt of Australia. Only
:48:36. > :48:39.10 at the Commonwealth Games, but she swam really well in the semis
:48:40. > :48:44.to make it through here. This is a fascinating one for me. Sarah
:48:44. > :48:48.Sjoestroem. She is the world record holder on the 100m butterfly. She
:48:48. > :48:52.swam poorly on that but really looked good on this one. To his
:48:52. > :49:02.been talking a lot in the interviews about trying to get onto
:49:02. > :49:23.
:49:23. > :49:27.the 200m freestyle and converting phenomenal form. Tactics are the
:49:27. > :49:37.only question for me. She got scared at the Olympics by Becky
:49:37. > :49:39.
:49:39. > :49:44.Adlington into a swimming a very same. The only thing on that, I'm
:49:44. > :49:47.with you, is at the Olympics she hadn't got a gold medal. That was
:49:47. > :49:51.her first shop for it and I think she put a lot of pressure on
:49:51. > :49:55.herself to get the gold. Whereas here, she's already got a gold
:49:55. > :49:59.medal. The design on her suit is a replica of the tattoo on the side
:49:59. > :50:03.of her neck, one of seven tattoos she has got. The first one she got
:50:03. > :50:07.from her parents as a reward for making the world championship team
:50:07. > :50:17.in Barcelona in 2003 at the age of 14. Would you let your daughter get
:50:17. > :50:30.
:50:30. > :50:35.five, she goes in as the favourite. She had a very good start.
:50:35. > :50:45.Heemskerk again, she went off like a shot. She is in the centre in the
:50:45. > :50:52.
:50:52. > :50:55.black hat. Also going but there is two women have been swimming in
:50:56. > :51:00.juniors. It's sometimes hard to make the jump from junior to senior.
:51:00. > :51:04.But Lippok is very strong. Not surprised at shimmied down the
:51:04. > :51:08.bottom here. Thought she might do write on world record. It looks
:51:08. > :51:12.like it's going to be a mountain to climb here. This is a huge
:51:12. > :51:22.difference. This is very unusual for her to let them go away that
:51:22. > :51:24.
:51:24. > :51:34.gone off a bit too slowly. She went 57.0. She's one-and-a-half seconds
:51:34. > :51:38.
:51:38. > :51:48.metre or so. Heemskerk is going to be in trouble here. Schmitt is to
:51:48. > :51:54.
:51:54. > :52:00.interesting. She's working this every single metre, she's taking
:52:00. > :52:05.more and more. Heemskerk, the wheels have fallen off, there's no
:52:05. > :52:11.medal for her. She's blown it. Moffat of France in six. Look at
:52:11. > :52:15.this, what a swim from Pellegrini. She was miles behind at the 100m.
:52:15. > :52:20.She's won a gold medal. What a great swim it was. One-and-a-half
:52:20. > :52:26.seconds down at the halfway turn. She's just won the gold medal by
:52:26. > :52:35.half a second. Huge to swim! Gold medal on the 400m, now gold medal
:52:35. > :52:39.on the 200m. There are two examples of how to pace a 200m freestyle and
:52:39. > :52:42.how not to. Pellegrini is a year younger than Heemskerk and
:52:42. > :52:47.Heemskerk blue that big-time. She smiles more capable than that. What
:52:48. > :52:51.a mistake. Having the patience to see somebody next to you go off so
:52:51. > :52:55.quickly and realise that you actually have the capability and
:52:55. > :53:00.the class to come back on the second 100. That's brilliant. What
:53:00. > :53:04.do you do when you get the 100 turn and you can see the person's feet
:53:04. > :53:10.ahead of you on the 200 freestyle? Pellegrini knows what she's doing
:53:10. > :53:16.and what she's capable of in training. She pulls that face in
:53:16. > :53:20.the mirror every date. She knows what she is doing. Whereas
:53:20. > :53:30.Heemskerk, I think she was trying to be brave and Brega but it just
:53:30. > :53:38.
:53:39. > :53:42.didn't work. There was no energy defend the 200m freestyle champion.
:53:43. > :53:52.In winning the first 400 freestyle, she's also become the first female
:53:53. > :53:58.
:53:58. > :54:03.That was the most extraordinary race to watch. Heemskerk leading on
:54:03. > :54:07.the final turn. She finishes only 7th, and Pellegrini coming back to
:54:07. > :54:10.win by half a second. It was painful to watch, from her
:54:10. > :54:14.perspective. I used to swim 100m. perspective. I used to swim 100m.
:54:14. > :54:18.When you feel the lactate down the last length... You see her going
:54:18. > :54:24.into the war, 25 metres to go. She still half a second ahead of the
:54:24. > :54:31.next person in the race. She's swimming in a soup, you were saying
:54:31. > :54:36.to me. You see her going backwards and backwards. It's a story of two
:54:36. > :54:43.different races. Heemskerk goes hard on the first 100. Pellegrini,
:54:43. > :54:47.not so much speed. She comes on the back end. She comes back faster
:54:47. > :54:50.than she goes out. Heemskerk goes out and tries to hang on. If she
:54:50. > :54:53.held off a little bit more at the beginning of the race, had time
:54:53. > :54:57.from the semi-final would have won that final. That's how wrong she
:54:57. > :55:01.got it tactically. Didn't Pellegrini get it very wrong
:55:01. > :55:05.against Becky Adlington at the Olympics? So tactically, Pellegrini
:55:05. > :55:10.has improved at everything. Absolutely. When you want it so
:55:10. > :55:19.much, there's a fine line dunn macro one I used to swim 50m people
:55:19. > :55:22.used to go, it's just 50m. I used to tire up with 50m to go.
:55:22. > :55:26.Noradrenalin is going, you are going at full speed. For those
:55:26. > :55:30.girls, it's almost like keeping your legs down and then you bring
:55:30. > :55:33.them in later. Adrenalin, excitement, everything is going on,
:55:33. > :55:36.do have to calm yourself down and do have to calm yourself down and
:55:37. > :55:41.take a second. In Longo races it's all about pacing. I remember Colin
:55:41. > :55:46.Montgomerie, when he was leading at the US Open or the US PGA, in the
:55:46. > :55:51.final shot he said to his caddie, what do I need? The caddie
:55:51. > :55:55.recommended a cup, and he said, have you factored in adrenalin? You
:55:55. > :56:03.can't really study that, as to what it will do to you. Exactly. People
:56:03. > :56:06.say, don't you get nervous when you stand by the block? I get excited.
:56:06. > :56:11.Nervous Timmy is scared. I used to get excited about racing but I used
:56:11. > :56:16.to say to myself, the thing to stop me going to heart was the first
:56:16. > :56:21.five strokes, relax, relax. I used to count my strokes and build into
:56:21. > :56:24.which. For her, she's almost got to do the first 100m to keep her legs
:56:24. > :56:28.down. She was kicking from the Front thinking she would dominate
:56:28. > :56:33.the race. It went terribly wrong. Or a lot of these people, it's a
:56:33. > :56:40.year out. It's a long time to put those things right. She's got the
:56:40. > :56:48.basic mechanics, she will get it right. Sjoestroem keeps coming
:56:48. > :56:51.fourth. We are moving on to their 800m freestyle, which is all about
:56:51. > :56:59.pacing and getting it right and not going too soon. The home crowd will
:56:59. > :57:09.go mad here because the fastest go mad here because the fastest
:57:09. > :57:22.
:57:22. > :57:28.qualifier for the final was Sun this, for the men. It's not an
:57:28. > :57:38.Olympic event. The Olympic events of 50, 100, 204 hundred. Then it
:57:38. > :57:46.
:57:46. > :57:51.like the men and the women to do exactly the same thing. I'm with
:57:51. > :57:56.you. I think it should be the same. It's an historical thing. You know
:57:56. > :58:02.what it's like to try and change people in history. It's not easy.
:58:02. > :58:06.Sun Yang, the best chance is to go out. He does a spot of training
:58:06. > :58:16.every now and again on the Gold Coast in Australia with Dennis COB
:58:16. > :58:27.
:58:27. > :58:37.race before, we kind of thought the race would be down two, 3, four and
:58:37. > :58:47.
:58:47. > :58:54.whether PoW Johnson could hang on. Cochran is the one for me. He's
:58:54. > :59:00.doing quite well. This is interesting. Ryan Cochrane not
:59:00. > :59:04.always at the front. He's got a spidery stroke. He's tough, he will
:59:04. > :59:10.Dakin. But, for me, I don't know, I think Sun Yang has got a good
:59:10. > :59:14.finish as well. It's one of those where we thought the race looked
:59:14. > :59:19.like it at the top of the pool, which it is, but they are not
:59:19. > :59:24.really shining. Mellouli is not as fast as I thought he would be.
:59:24. > :59:28.Mellouli comes back very hard, Mellouli, Lane two, two from the
:59:28. > :59:31.left-hand side in the black hat. If Mellouli has got the finish that we
:59:31. > :59:35.think he has, and it's not just the finish, it's the whole of the
:59:35. > :59:41.second half of the race, he's reasonably well placed at the
:59:41. > :59:47.moment. They are exactly what I thought they would be. Ryan
:59:47. > :59:54.Cochrane normally attracts them. That's what he's doing. Mellouli,
:59:54. > :59:58.very dangerous. I'm not quite sure of the sprinter's speed of Sun Yang,
:59:58. > :00:08.the leader. If he's got the sprint, well, if he's leading, he's got a
:00:08. > :00:12.
:00:12. > :00:17.Asian Games and the 200 free. He got the silver in the 400 free. He
:00:17. > :00:24.has something in him from last year. He has had a more sprint training.
:00:24. > :00:29.He is trying to go along without it being a to training on him. He has
:00:29. > :00:36.just got to get a little bit more and step the pace up. The gap is
:00:37. > :00:45.just opening up between him and Ryan Cochrane. It really is opening
:00:45. > :00:53.up a. It is about 30 centimetres or 50 centimetres. Ryan Cochrane is
:00:53. > :01:00.now going towards him. A smooth stroke. Look at the stretch. If you
:01:00. > :01:10.look at Ryan Cochrane's head, you can see his hair. Sun Yang just
:01:10. > :01:13.
:01:13. > :01:22.digs in break in. -- digs it right in. Sun a gang of China has led
:01:22. > :01:32.from the start but only just. -- Sun Yang. Sun Yang is leading and
:01:32. > :01:41.
:01:41. > :01:47.Ryan Cochrane is just one of lane starting to make his move. Look at
:01:47. > :01:54.the kicks off the wall. There is still a feel of cat and mouse to
:01:54. > :02:03.this race. This is not done. I think Sun Yang needs a little bit
:02:03. > :02:10.more. It is not enough to be comfortable. Ryan Cochrane is a
:02:10. > :02:19.bigger threat. Ryan Cochrane is a Dyfed competitor and he will not
:02:19. > :02:27.give in on this one. There is not a lot of significance sprinting going
:02:27. > :02:32.on and there should have been. -- significant. It is Ryan Cochrane
:02:32. > :02:38.who is really doing something at the moment. Sun Yang was ahead at
:02:38. > :02:46.the last turn. Let's see the kick off the wall. A big kick from Ryan
:02:46. > :02:50.Cochrane. It suggests that he still has something in him. I wonder if
:02:51. > :02:59.he is just seeing how much he is getting away with before he has to
:02:59. > :03:09.turn it on. The position of his head is a very low indeed. La Hogue,
:03:09. > :03:09.
:03:09. > :03:14.he has picked his head up. -- Lock, he has picked his head up. This is
:03:14. > :03:19.very interesting. Sun Yang is just starting to use his legs properly
:03:19. > :03:27.and he is starting to swim away. Ryan Cochrane needs to react very
:03:27. > :03:32.quickly. It looks like lane to is coming back very hard in the second
:03:32. > :03:42.half of the race but he could lose the bronze medal Eddie is not
:03:42. > :03:53.
:03:53. > :04:03.Look at that stroke. He has got some left in him. Sun Yang looks
:04:03. > :04:05.
:04:05. > :04:11.very powerful. There is the bell. Two lengths to go. 100 metres to go.
:04:11. > :04:15.Sun Yang has gone to his lengths -- legs. He is going for it. He is
:04:15. > :04:20.swimming away and it looks wonderful. Ryan Cochrane is trying
:04:20. > :04:29.to stay with him. I think it will be in vain. Let's see what happens
:04:29. > :04:35.in the last turn. This crowd are going to go absolutely Batty. 50
:04:35. > :04:41.metres to go. They are all standing up. Hugely impressive. All the
:04:41. > :04:50.spectators are standing on their feet. They are roaring him on. What
:04:50. > :05:00.a fantastic swim. This is superb. What a fantastic display of
:05:00. > :05:00.
:05:00. > :05:08.freestyle swimming. He is going fast. Seven minutes. The gold goes
:05:08. > :05:18.to Sun Yang of China. The second place goes to Ryan Cochrane and the
:05:18. > :05:25.bronze goes to the Hungarian. What style. Sun Yang, the 19-year-old
:05:25. > :05:31.Chinese man, the storied the field. -- destroyed the field. We know
:05:31. > :05:36.that he has put a lot of work into it. They train forever. They
:05:36. > :05:46.trained so hard. That guy will spend hours in the water every day
:05:46. > :05:58.
:05:59. > :06:04.I can tell you the average person on the American team has since --
:06:04. > :06:14.swims 2,300 miles a year. These guys probably do about 50 % more
:06:14. > :06:17.
:06:17. > :06:27.than that. Extraordinary, that last 50. He had so much a laugh.
:06:27. > :06:30.
:06:30. > :06:40.1500m is going to be extraordinary. There is a scoreboard attended --
:06:40. > :06:43.
:06:43. > :06:53.lowered down in the arena. It is the dawn of a new champion. Hungary
:06:53. > :06:55.
:06:55. > :07:01.came in very strong for the bronze. 4th the 800 metres for a man is not
:07:01. > :07:10.an Olympic events so Sun Yang will have to stand up and have raised
:07:10. > :07:16.Andy 1,500 metres in this pool behind me. -- race in the 1,500
:07:16. > :07:20.metres. Michael Phelps has proved that he
:07:20. > :07:28.is still a major force to be reckoned with. There are two
:07:28. > :07:38.British swimmers to look out for. We have Ellen Gandy and Jemma Lowe.
:07:38. > :08:03.
:08:03. > :08:13.Gandy goes in lane five for Great Games silver medallist, in lane
:08:13. > :08:13.
:08:13. > :08:23.seven. -- the Commonwealth Games silver medallist, in lane seven. If
:08:23. > :08:25.
:08:25. > :08:35.here is Teresa Crippen from the University of Florida. Jiao Liuyang
:08:35. > :08:37.
:08:37. > :08:41.in lane six. Ellen Gandy goes in five. She is a bronze medallist on
:08:41. > :08:50.this 200 butterfly but she is the British record holder. I would
:08:50. > :08:58.imagine she needs to get closer to the record to make the final.
:08:58. > :09:06.Suzanne and Jack are less from Hungary -- Zsuzsanna Jakabos here.
:09:06. > :09:16.Very good at the flies. I think she is in good shape and it will be
:09:16. > :09:17.
:09:17. > :09:27.good to see how she gets on here. Check out Ida Marko-Varga and. She
:09:27. > :09:42.
:09:42. > :09:49.is looking good. Ellen Gandy is in on there? She does kick twice. She
:09:50. > :09:57.just does not do it right. She is merely pausing. It is the most
:09:57. > :10:02.bizarre a stroke. That is going to hold her back. The rest Of them are
:10:02. > :10:12.working hard. Ellen Gandy is working very hard. A quarter of a
:10:12. > :10:12.
:10:12. > :10:18.second lead. She might want to try that a little bit different rate.
:10:18. > :10:24.Ida Marko-Varga from Sweden is going at the bottom of the shot.
:10:24. > :10:29.Ellen Gandy is leading. This is good to see. Her 100 fly was very
:10:29. > :10:38.good. She needs to qualify well. she can keep this pays out she will
:10:38. > :10:46.do very well. She is a little bit out of the stroke. That is halfway.
:10:46. > :10:55.For a British record is -- her British record was set in 2009. It
:10:55. > :11:03.is impressive and it is very good. We have seen and patch was first
:11:03. > :11:08.hundreds before tonight. Look at the woman who is reading in the
:11:08. > :11:14.black cap. She is breathing to the side. -- breathing in the black cap.
:11:14. > :11:21.You have to keep a good stroke when you do that. Ellen Gandy has 50
:11:21. > :11:27.metres to go. She looks tough. This is impressive stuff. Sometimes if
:11:27. > :11:34.you are a little bit heavier you take more. She is digging in deep.
:11:35. > :11:44.Zsuzsanna Jakabos is coming after her. I do not mind if Ellen Gandy
:11:44. > :11:52.comes in first, second or third. Ellen Gandy just gets it sweat the
:11:53. > :12:01.Zsuzsanna Jakabos things again. -- with Zsuzsanna Jakabos in second.
:12:01. > :12:07.Fantastic. She has a big smile. It is good to get a victory in the
:12:07. > :12:13.semi-final. Fantastic. She will be in a good position. Let's see how
:12:13. > :12:20.the second semi-final gets on. should not get too excited too
:12:20. > :12:30.early. Look at that. Get your head down. It is like Michael Phelps. He
:12:30. > :12:30.
:12:30. > :12:38.keeps his head down very low. Ellen Gandy has won the first semi-final
:12:38. > :12:48.of the women's 200 flights. Susannah did have this comes in
:12:48. > :12:49.
:12:49. > :12:54.second -- Suzanne and Jacobus in That was a great win. 60.6. That
:12:54. > :12:58.was much quicker. Yes. I will probably go quicker in the final
:12:58. > :13:08.tomorrow but I wanted to make it in safely and have a good swim. I am
:13:08. > :13:47.
:13:47. > :13:55.really happy. Good luck for that in the world from 2007 who
:13:55. > :14:04.qualified. Here we have Otylia Jedrzeczak. She is an Athens
:14:04. > :14:11.champion. Jemma Lowe, what can you do? She has been coached in Swansea.
:14:11. > :14:19.Here is Jessicah Schipper. She is defending world champion. She won
:14:19. > :14:26.in 2007 and 2009 and is also a world record holder. Here comes
:14:26. > :14:33.Stephanie Rice, also an Olympic champion. And here is Liu Zige. She
:14:33. > :14:38.is the current chimp -- champion. Now we have Kathleen Hersey. She is
:14:38. > :14:43.an Olympic finalist. That sounds a little boring compared to the rest!
:14:43. > :14:53.She will be out quick though. Keep an eye on her. Natsumi Hoshi from
:14:53. > :15:01.
:15:01. > :15:11.time this year, 25.36. She was a little bit faster than that earlier.
:15:11. > :15:22.
:15:22. > :15:27.the bottom of your picture. Slightly worryingly, the three big
:15:27. > :15:37.guns in Lane's one, two and three. Three, the world record holder, and
:15:37. > :15:46.
:15:46. > :15:52.one and two, four times past world from the world champion, sorry, the
:15:52. > :16:02.world record holder, the Olympic champion. Zil getting a very good
:16:02. > :16:08.
:16:08. > :16:11.at the top, it will be called with the Olympic and world champions at
:16:11. > :16:16.the top there. It's good that Stephanie Rice has taken this race
:16:16. > :16:21.out quite quickly as well. Good turns. Jemma Lowe has been really
:16:21. > :16:25.working on them up for a while. She's now back in Swansea training
:16:25. > :16:31.with but McAllister. It's very important on the fly to get the
:16:31. > :16:41.good turns. Jemma Lowe in good shape. She looked good, she looked
:16:41. > :16:45.
:16:45. > :16:49.good, second at the turn. 60.30 is pretty much exactly the same as we
:16:49. > :16:55.saw in that first semi-final. This is good if she can hold on. She
:16:55. > :17:05.does look good. She's tracking the Olympic champion in her home poll,
:17:05. > :17:05.
:17:05. > :17:15.home crowd. There she is. Neck-and- of thing in the first semi-final.
:17:15. > :17:39.
:17:39. > :17:49.Jemma Lowe. Schipper has an ugly struck but it's very effective. --
:17:49. > :17:55.
:17:55. > :18:05.mistaken, Great Britain are going to go in the fastest, one, two.
:18:05. > :18:20.
:18:20. > :18:26.some -- similar to Michael Phelps. Beautiful head down as well, just
:18:26. > :18:31.as the arms go past your ears your head has got to be going down. She
:18:31. > :18:35.finished well as well. Some of the technical parts of Jemma Lowe's
:18:35. > :18:45.racing are fantastic. In that underwater turn, she was down quite
:18:45. > :19:03.
:19:03. > :19:13.third. Schipper back in fourth. think she will make the final,
:19:13. > :19:25.
:19:25. > :19:30.though. Schipper and Rice, the two and Ellen Gandy. Two Australians,
:19:30. > :19:37.two Chinese. That's going to be a cracker. Can we get a gold medal in
:19:37. > :19:42.You said to me early in the week you liked the 100. It's hard to
:19:42. > :19:47.decide which is my favourite one. I like the 100 because it's a shorter
:19:47. > :19:51.than the 200. That's painful. But I do train for the 200 more, it's
:19:51. > :19:55.shown in my results. That puts you into the final at the fastest and
:19:55. > :19:59.puts Ellen Gandy in there as well. It's going to be a really good race.
:19:59. > :20:03.I'm loving the fact that we both got in the final again. We share a
:20:03. > :20:06.room together and have the same schedule, so it's nice we're going
:20:06. > :20:09.to be there together and give it a shot tomorrow. A lot of people at
:20:09. > :20:13.home probably find it quite difficult that you can be good
:20:13. > :20:17.mates and then race each other. have been asked quite a lot of
:20:17. > :20:22.questions about that, but we did share a room in 2008 at the
:20:22. > :20:27.Olympics as well. We just both want to do well. We'd all -- boat train
:20:27. > :20:32.hard. We are good friends and one each other to do really well.
:20:32. > :20:37.good result would be great Britain, one, two.
:20:37. > :20:40.You are looking lovely and slimline. Thank you, that's always great to
:20:40. > :20:44.hear after a brace. I'm really enjoying this meet. It was good for
:20:44. > :20:49.me to get a good preparation in and to get back down to a good racing
:20:49. > :20:53.wait for me. I've enjoyed the meet so far. A double Olympic champion,
:20:53. > :20:57.it's quite hard to come back down off that and not be caught in all
:20:57. > :21:02.of the stuff that goes with being a great champion. Then you have to
:21:02. > :21:06.focus for another Olympics. You want Michael have the same task.
:21:06. > :21:11.Yes, Phelps on a different scale to me but it took me a couple of years
:21:11. > :21:14.to get over what had happened. I wasn't very motivated in 2009, and
:21:14. > :21:19.I had surgery last year. It's been a rough couple of years but I feel
:21:19. > :21:24.I've picked myself up quite well. I needed 10 months out for surgery,
:21:24. > :21:30.so hopefully I can improve on how I've done this year and use it as a
:21:30. > :21:35.stepping-stone towards next year. The 204 hundred are the things I
:21:35. > :21:39.trained for. This 200 fly is a bit of fun. It's not bad to make the
:21:39. > :21:43.final of something you consider a bit of fun. Stephanie Rice talking
:21:43. > :21:49.to Sharron Davies there. Jemma Lowe, winning her semi-final and
:21:49. > :21:52.qualifying fastest for the final. It's brilliant. After seeing her in
:21:52. > :21:56.the 100 fly, after saying it was not their distance, they do double
:21:56. > :22:02.the distance. We saw in the semi- finals there, Jemma Lowe in the
:22:02. > :22:05.outside lane, she did her own race on her own. The Chinese Olympic
:22:05. > :22:10.world record holder, she gave her a lesson. It's going to be different
:22:10. > :22:14.in the final, it's going to be a tight race. There are two Brits in
:22:14. > :22:19.the final again. Jemma Lowe and Ellen Gandy. If you have your tea
:22:19. > :22:23.made with you, it actually helps, you are so used to racing each
:22:23. > :22:27.other at home. You've got someone alongside you out there. That just
:22:27. > :22:31.shows the strength and depth we've got in certain events. We needed
:22:31. > :22:36.that. It's going to be our first opportunity to take a gold medal.
:22:36. > :22:44.Ellen Gandy, she's only 19. Jemma Lowe was very young, 21, but for
:22:44. > :22:49.Ellen Gandy this is a real learning process - a process. She's done
:22:49. > :22:54.fantastic. Looking at the 100, getting faster each round. She
:22:54. > :22:57.dominated her semi-final. She went in second-fastest into that final.
:22:57. > :23:03.The thing with heats is making semis, the thing with semis, it's
:23:03. > :23:06.making finals. She gets faster every race. 19, this is like fast
:23:06. > :23:10.track experience for next year. She is only going to be 20 at the
:23:10. > :23:15.Olympics. It's a great time for her. She learns an awful lot, gets
:23:15. > :23:18.faster each time. She trains out in Australia. You have pockets of
:23:18. > :23:22.training groups around the world where you have lots of different
:23:22. > :23:28.swimmer's training together. They learn from each other. If you've
:23:28. > :23:31.got that club environment, that... With Stephanie Rice just down the

:42:40. > :42:45.at the moment and Phelps is just off form. Both of them on form at
:42:45. > :42:53.the same time his fireworks anyway. We know they can do a freestyle and
:42:53. > :42:57.a medley. I would go for Ryan Lochte. Phelps has got his 200
:42:57. > :43:02.metres butterfly and that made a difference for him. He will not
:43:02. > :43:07.have anything to lose. The strokes are great. I think it will be neck-

:43:17. > :43:19.
:43:19. > :43:24.be a dogfight for third. The guide does not seem to break a sweat --
:43:24. > :43:28.Ryan Lochte does not seem to break a sweat. He was joking about

:52:03. > :52:08.easily be lining up. We haven't seen Jo DAX and yet. No, she's had
:52:08. > :52:12.a torrid year. She's had problems with injuries, illness and asthma.
:52:12. > :52:16.She is slowly coming back to her best form. She told me about a year
:52:16. > :52:19.ago that the asthma got so bad she actually cracked ribs in the pool
:52:19. > :52:22.when she was winning because she was struggling so hard to breathe.
:52:22. > :52:27.She didn't know she had a problem at the time. She's trained through
:52:27. > :52:30.it. This is how much athletes push themselves through pain barriers.
:52:30. > :52:35.After a couple of months it doesn't go away and you think there's a bit
:52:35. > :52:40.more to it. Jo Jackson did do heats of the 200 freestyle but didn't
:52:40. > :52:44.make it through to the semis. She hasn't been on great form. We are
:52:44. > :52:47.here at the Aquatics Centre, a big sign down their say in one year to
:52:47. > :52:51.go. This being unveiled to the public and press. All sorts of
:52:51. > :52:55.people are going to get their chance to use that pool. The man
:52:55. > :53:05.who will get the honour of doing the first official diver off that
:53:05. > :53:07.
:53:07. > :53:10.10 metre board will be Tom Daley. Back from Shanghai. Yes. Your
:53:10. > :53:13.reaction to everything that happened there? It was good for me.
:53:13. > :53:18.We got all the spots for the Olympics, individual, Synchro and
:53:19. > :53:23.qualified for the World series. Four new divers in there as well.
:53:23. > :53:27.Didn't dive too well but to come fifth and not dive to well is
:53:27. > :53:37.pretty good. Which was your favourite? The dive I was most
:53:37. > :53:42.
:53:42. > :53:48.happy with was a triple somersault because you can't spot the dive,
:53:48. > :53:54.can you? It's quite difficult to died of doors, especially in that
:53:54. > :53:59.final, it started to rain. It was quite windy as well. It was quite
:53:59. > :54:03.weird, but it's something you have to deal with. The competitor who
:54:03. > :54:07.won the gold just seemed a league apart. He was sensational. Is it
:54:07. > :54:11.because he looks so good or just because you know what you need to
:54:11. > :54:15.do that you've decided to give up school in January? I'm not giving
:54:15. > :54:18.up school in January. I'm going full-time diving and part-time
:54:18. > :54:23.school. I'm going to be going to school but two hours each day to
:54:23. > :54:26.keep up with things. Yeah, he's doing fantastic at the moment. He's
:54:26. > :54:30.out there, 40 points ahead of the rest of the field. It's going to be
:54:30. > :54:34.interesting to see whether anyone will be able to keep up with him
:54:34. > :54:38.next year. It myself or any of the other divers do their dives as well
:54:38. > :54:43.as they can come I can't see why they couldn't beat him. Are you
:54:43. > :54:49.excited? This is the first time I've seen it. I've just arrived. It
:54:49. > :54:56.really looks amazing. It's the best pool I've ever seen. Seb Coe said
:54:56. > :55:06.earlier that the diving end of it doesn't have a name yet. Really?
:55:06. > :55:12.
:55:12. > :55:16.could be the Tom Daley diving pool. Do you know what dive you are going
:55:16. > :55:21.to do tonight? I'm not sure what dive and going to be doing yet,
:55:21. > :55:24.I'll leave it for a surprise. chances are it will be an upright
:55:24. > :55:30.one rather than a handstand one. haven't really thought about it
:55:30. > :55:33.that much. Photo finish. We will see. There are ones which look good
:55:33. > :55:40.for photos, ones which look good for people-watching. We will have
:55:40. > :55:43.to wait and see. Four 1/2, it has to be one that I know I can do well
:55:43. > :55:47.because it might be a bit embarrassing otherwise. We've been
:55:47. > :55:51.talking about the balance for high profile at its, and you are one of
:55:51. > :55:56.the most well-known faces leading into London. A year to go, how much
:55:56. > :55:58.do you have to balance the training and public appearances? Definitely,
:55:58. > :56:01.training comes first. It's something you have to focus on
:56:01. > :56:07.because you don't get any of the public appearances without the
:56:07. > :56:11.training and good results. For me, the main thing is to meet -- major
:56:11. > :56:15.and training in the off-season. Then the media comes second after
:56:15. > :56:19.that. I make sure I do some, but I have to make sure I do it at the
:56:19. > :56:23.right time and not to affect the training. Part of it is visualising
:56:23. > :56:27.what it might be like to win a gold medal. You'll get your first look
:56:27. > :56:30.at the medals tonight. Then you've got to block that out. Exactly. But
:56:30. > :56:35.today is a great source of motivation and inspiration, to be
:56:35. > :56:41.able to see the metals and the pool. It's going to be an advantage to
:56:41. > :56:44.stand at the top of the board and visualise my dives. See how much of
:56:44. > :56:48.the stands you can see from 10 metres, imagine the amount of
:56:49. > :56:53.people who are going to be here. It's going to do me good. When you
:56:53. > :56:58.spin round off a ten-metre outdoors, does this guy and the water look
:56:58. > :57:02.the same colour? Yeah. But you can practise it here an awful lot.
:57:02. > :57:05.you are diving outdoors you got the wind and the sky that is blue and
:57:05. > :57:09.the water that is blue. When you are spinning round you have to know
:57:09. > :57:13.which way is up, when they are both blew it is difficult. Here, because
:57:13. > :57:17.the water is quite dark, which the divers love for being able to see
:57:17. > :57:21.where the water is. The ceiling is a different colour, the seats are a
:57:21. > :57:25.different colour. That makes it easier. How much do you think you
:57:25. > :57:28.will come here and train? As much as possible. We got one day of
:57:28. > :57:34.training later this year and then the rest of the year we got a few
:57:34. > :57:38.training camps here. Probably before the Olympics we will have
:57:38. > :57:42.about three weeks' training year. I'm not sure. It will be fabulous.
:57:42. > :57:46.It feels so right. It looks incredible. To imagine the amount
:57:46. > :57:50.of people that are going to be here, it really is amazing. You can see
:57:50. > :57:55.Tom in action. He will be performing the first official dive
:57:55. > :58:05.of the ten-metre platform at 7:20pm tonight. That programme starts at
:58:05. > :58:09.7pm. Mark and I will be back on BBC Two tomorrow afternoon at 1pm.
:58:09. > :58:13.Jemma Lowe and Ellen Gandy, we could have two medals for Great
:58:13. > :58:17.Britain. We could have a first gold medal of these championships in the
:58:17. > :58:23.pool for Great Britain. They will be going in the 200m butterfly.
:58:23. > :58:26.From all of us here, the unofficial name of this place is the stingray.
:58:27. > :58:30.It's wonderful to have Tom here to help close the programme. I'll let
