:00:43. > :00:53.So far at these World Championships in Shanghai, it has all been about

:00:53. > :00:53.

:00:53. > :00:59.USA, USA, USA! Whether it is the new stark or not, and Britain have

:00:59. > :01:03.been lagging behind. But today, the first real chance in the pool of a

:01:03. > :01:09.gold medal, because Becky Adlington is out to get the one title that

:01:09. > :01:19.has so far eluded her. She wants to be world champion. The Olympic

:01:19. > :01:21.

:01:21. > :01:26.champion, over 800m Adlington hopes to complete the set. Lycett

:01:26. > :01:30.Simmonds a snug into the final of the 200m backstroke and is up

:01:30. > :01:34.against a 16-year-old American superstar. Mark Foster is alongside

:01:34. > :01:39.me and will be analysing all the action and putting it into context

:01:39. > :01:44.as far as 2012 is concerned and with one year to go, Becky

:01:44. > :01:49.Adlington knows exactly what to expect. As a 19-year-old, she went

:01:49. > :01:59.into the Beijing Olympics with hopes possibly of fake medal, maybe

:01:59. > :02:32.

:02:32. > :02:38.two. She came out as a double for a week, the women's 800m

:02:38. > :02:48.freestyle final and Rebecca Addington does In the fastest. But

:02:48. > :02:56.

:02:56. > :03:03.beware the dame in lane five, Lotte but finally she did stop before the

:03:03. > :03:08.gun went. 16 events of this pool and hopefully it will take about

:03:08. > :03:13.eight minutes and 14 seconds and if it does, Addington will break the

:03:14. > :03:19.world record. Her own world record. But this is a little ominous. Lotte

:03:19. > :03:28.Friis of Denmark stating her pace immediately, under Becky's world

:03:28. > :03:34.record pace by quite a way. Becky has such a fantastic finish. I

:03:34. > :03:39.think if Adlington is there with Friis, with 100m to go, I think it

:03:39. > :03:46.is Becky's. But it is a psychological game, this one,

:03:46. > :03:53.because there are bigger rivals. Becky knows that Friis is on form,

:03:54. > :04:03.having swung the St heat together. -- having been in the same heat

:04:04. > :04:04.

:04:04. > :04:08.together. The world champion from 2005, 2007 with the black cap on.

:04:08. > :04:14.Only 23 years of age but I am not sure it had better days are behind

:04:14. > :04:24.her. Horrible to say that at 23, but I am not sure if Kate Ziegler

:04:24. > :04:25.

:04:25. > :04:29.is in form. We are at the 150 mark. Friis and Addington in the white

:04:29. > :04:37.hat and blue had respectively. Touching almost exactly the same

:04:37. > :04:41.time. Lotte Friis closer to us with the white hat. Becky Adlington

:04:41. > :04:50.looks very good at the moment. Friis tends to be bid up about half

:04:50. > :04:55.way. -- tends to pick it up. A big breath into the wall. Not the

:04:55. > :04:59.greatest turn from Becky. Something she has 12 Munster were gone. I

:04:59. > :05:02.know the British team has specific funding to work on its terms.

:05:02. > :05:06.Talking to Michael Scott, the performance director, before we

:05:06. > :05:10.started, and he was talking very specifically about working with the

:05:10. > :05:16.coach is on the turns and clearly, they have got a lot of work to do.

:05:16. > :05:23.Becky needs to do work on that. She cannot afford, on a 16 length

:05:23. > :05:30.raised, to lurch -- to lose half a second per turn. Ziegler is still

:05:30. > :05:36.on them, though, Andy. This is good, actually. I am pleased about this.

:05:36. > :05:40.Adlington is still there with Friis but Ziegler, that is also ominous.

:05:41. > :05:45.For Ziegler to still be with Friis. They are playing into her hands a

:05:45. > :05:51.little bit and she is tough. It is better for Adlington that she is

:05:51. > :05:55.therefore Friis. Although Friis does Jennie Tonge, I think

:05:55. > :06:05.Adlington can do the same. I think it will be a sprint in the last

:06:05. > :06:10.100m in this race. If it is, I have my money ANA Adlington. She is now

:06:10. > :06:18.two wants hundredths of a second behind Lotte Friis. Nine lends left

:06:18. > :06:28.at the end of this Lent. -- nine lengths left at the end of this

:06:28. > :06:35.

:06:35. > :06:41.move and that would be interesting, because I expected Lotte Friis to

:06:41. > :06:47.go at the next turn, the halfway point. You have to be careful with

:06:47. > :06:51.abrupt moves on this race, Andy, because if you do put in extra

:06:51. > :07:00.effort just to try to break you can bring your pacing. She will not

:07:00. > :07:03.want to do that. -- you can ruin your pacing. So the women's 800m

:07:03. > :07:08.freestyle at the World Championships and Becky Adlington

:07:08. > :07:16.still just in the lead and it has been less than a tenth of a second

:07:16. > :07:23.on every turn isobar. Addington in the blue hat for Great Britain.

:07:23. > :07:28.Lotte Friis from Denmark. And Kate Ziegler of the USA. Well, maybe

:07:28. > :07:38.still there. Looks like she is just dropping back -- dropping back a

:07:38. > :07:39.

:07:39. > :07:44.tiny bit. They have picked it up their little. -- a little. The two

:07:44. > :07:54.ladies at the front, Adlington and Friis, are stepping it up just

:07:54. > :07:55.

:07:55. > :08:00.slightly, and it is proving a little bit too hard for Ziegler. An

:08:00. > :08:06.American in fourth place. Fourth or fifth. This is now turning into a

:08:06. > :08:15.head-to-head match. It looks like Friis is having a go now. She is

:08:15. > :08:20.going right now. And Becky has seen her. She is breathing to her left-

:08:20. > :08:27.hand side. But Friis, with six lengths to go, is trying to break

:08:28. > :08:35.in. Friis can keep on going. She does not have the sprint so she has

:08:35. > :08:41.to go early, but six lengths is an awful long way. Five to go. The two

:08:41. > :08:48.of them have stepped up their pace do now. It looks like the turn is

:08:48. > :08:55.just... She is losing that is 0.1 or 0.2 on each of the turns, Andy,

:08:55. > :09:01.Rebecca Adlington. Friis has moved over to the right. She is trying to

:09:01. > :09:11.distance herself from Beckett so she is not breathing down her neck.

:09:11. > :09:16.

:09:16. > :09:20.200m to go, four lengths of this Paul -- of these pool. Addington on

:09:20. > :09:24.the left and Lotte Friis of Denmark on the right. They have tracked

:09:24. > :09:30.each other all the way through and I think Adlington is playing a

:09:30. > :09:36.pretty clever game here. I think she is letting Lotte Friis state --

:09:36. > :09:40.set the pace. She looks like she is holding on. If it is 50 to go and

:09:40. > :09:48.it is a sprint, I would stick my money on Becky, but she is working

:09:49. > :09:58.very hard at the moment. She has more of a sprinter as's at stroke.

:09:59. > :09:59.

:09:59. > :10:06.-- a sprinter's stroke. Only two lengths to go. 100m at the stern.

:10:06. > :10:11.It is head-to-head. All that swimming and it boils down to this.

:10:11. > :10:18.Becky is starting the hundredm the biggest gap down that she has had.

:10:18. > :10:23.We do not know how much energy Becky has left. Becky on the left,

:10:23. > :10:27.Friis on the right. The gold medal goes to one of these two ladies.

:10:27. > :10:33.Friis is looking strong. Becky is coming back. This is an

:10:33. > :10:41.unbelievable race. Fantastic to watch. Becky, the Olympic champion,

:10:41. > :10:48.Friis the world champion. Just looking over each other. One length.

:10:48. > :10:53.Look at this! Friis closer to us, from Denmark, and Rebecca Adlington.

:10:53. > :10:59.She is starting to overtake! Rebecca Adlington in the blue hat

:10:59. > :11:06.for Great Britain is starting to overtake! It is very close! Is the

:11:07. > :11:13.Goldman going to Britain? -- is the gold medal going to Britain? What a

:11:13. > :11:21.superb swim that was! She waited until the last 50m after tracking

:11:21. > :11:29.Friis. World champion, 800m freestyle, Rebecca Abingdon of

:11:29. > :11:37.Great Britain. It was like two heavyweight boxers slugging each

:11:37. > :11:43.other. And really the last 50m. She is going to congratulate Friis. She

:11:43. > :11:48.knows the battle they were in. Friis did everything she could. The

:11:48. > :11:52.race goes to Becky and what a great time to come back into form, to win

:11:52. > :12:00.the World Championships the year before the Olympics in London.

:12:00. > :12:06.Friis is looking ever more at Adlington and she was. -- looking

:12:06. > :12:15.over more at Adlington than she wants. Addington dug the for this,

:12:16. > :12:21.didn't she, Andy? -- dubbed deep. She is the world champion. In the

:12:21. > :12:31.end, it was actually quite a long way. What a great sprint she has

:12:31. > :12:32.

:12:32. > :12:37.got, Betty. -- Becky. This is great to see. Our two world champions,

:12:37. > :12:43.Keri-Anne Payne on the right and Becky Adlington, the new world

:12:43. > :12:48.champion in the 800m freestyle. She is delighted. Good on you. Such an

:12:48. > :12:52.intelligent race as well. Just totally used Lotte Friis all the

:12:52. > :12:57.way through to the stop so world champion in the 800m freestyle,

:12:57. > :13:05.Rebecca Adlington adding that gold medal to the gold medal she won in

:13:05. > :13:13.Beijing. She clearly enjoys swimming 800m freestyle in China.

:13:13. > :13:21.great swim. Great Britain winning gold in the swimming pool, Rebecca

:13:21. > :13:26.Adlington world champion in the women's 800m women's freestyle.

:13:26. > :13:32.World champion and Olympic champion and world record holder, 800m

:13:32. > :13:37.freestyle. And with one year to go, that is very impressive indeed.

:13:37. > :13:46.was, Andy. I am really looking forward to the national anthem.

:13:46. > :13:53.am I! We have been listening to everybody else's. Keri-anne Payne

:13:53. > :14:03.won the 10th Kai open water. And now Rebecca Adlington, winning the

:14:03. > :14:03.

:14:03. > :14:54.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 51 seconds

:14:54. > :15:00.CLARE BALDING: Becky Adlington shouts out there, come on! And she

:15:00. > :15:04.had her finger nails done with the Union flag. How fitting. And we can

:15:04. > :15:14.now go live to Shanghai and speed to the new world champion, Rebecca

:15:14. > :15:19.

:15:19. > :15:23.What a race and what a fabulous final length. Thank you. I am

:15:23. > :15:30.feeling the pain now. It is the first time I have sat down since

:15:30. > :15:33.the race! In terms of the way Lotte Friis did you want from the start

:15:34. > :15:39.and absolutely sat neck-and-neck with you, it made it thrilling to

:15:39. > :15:44.watch, but it made it Tens as well. Yes, the way she has dominated the

:15:44. > :15:47.Olympic Games, the eight handers, she goes out and does her own race,

:15:48. > :15:52.and in her mind she is positive that way and we always thought that

:15:52. > :15:57.if she has got people with her then she will fight a bit more, but in

:15:57. > :16:02.that last 100m, it was phenomenal. She has proven to herself that she

:16:02. > :16:05.can do it in two different ways. She had a tiny technical problems

:16:05. > :16:08.in Shanghai, but it does give us an opportunity to talk about the fact

:16:08. > :16:12.that she can improve on this because there are areas of her

:16:12. > :16:17.swimming that can be even better. Yes, the actual swimming part,

:16:17. > :16:20.after she has pushed off the ball she is the best in that world, the

:16:20. > :16:26.fastest in the world, but the bit she can improve on is the start and

:16:26. > :16:32.the terms. She need to streamline the kicks off the wall. Lotte Friis

:16:32. > :16:37.is not the best turn in the world, but she took off this much, which

:16:37. > :16:41.is 0.1 of a second, but times that by 16, that is maybe a second she

:16:42. > :16:47.is losing just on the terms alone. Interesting but the commentary said

:16:47. > :16:50.there, and D James said Betty Adlington you are the best sprinter

:16:50. > :16:54.in the world, believe in yourself and hold on to that. Sometimes you

:16:54. > :16:58.wonder if she does herself more than anyone else. This is a big

:16:58. > :17:02.thing, the belief. She said she can believe she may be World

:17:02. > :17:05.Championship final, but hang on, you are Olympic champion, now you

:17:05. > :17:09.are world champion, Commonwealth champion, she has won everything.

:17:09. > :17:13.She just lacks that tiny belief in herself which hopefully she will

:17:13. > :17:22.soon realise how good she is before it orphanages at the end. She is

:17:22. > :17:27.absolutely amazing. -- before a tour finishes at the end. Maybe

:17:27. > :17:30.this deflects from herself in a sense. We are going to try and

:17:30. > :17:34.joint Becky Adlington again a bit later in the programme. Our

:17:34. > :17:40.connection has gone down, I'm afraid. We will go from one extreme

:17:40. > :17:50.to the other. One length of the poll in the butterfly final. Seven

:17:50. > :18:30.

:18:30. > :18:37.I expected. It looks like she is starting to swim away. Oh, who has

:18:37. > :18:42.got it? Dekker has got it! Oh, come on! Theresa, what are you doing in

:18:42. > :18:52.these finals? Inge Dekker finally wins a gold for Holland. That is a

:18:52. > :18:52.

:18:53. > :19:00.massive shock. When we see the replay, Alexandra went too far over.

:19:00. > :19:10.A good win for Dekker. You can't take anything away from her. Two

:19:10. > :19:13.

:19:13. > :19:23.gold medals for her. We are not going to see the bird's eye view of.

:19:23. > :19:30.

:19:30. > :19:37.going to see the bird's eye view of. bronze medal position. A massive

:19:37. > :19:47.surprise. So, the gold goes to Inge Dekker of Holland. I can't believe

:19:47. > :19:47.

:19:47. > :19:50.it. And a huge bronze medal for Melanie Henique he frowns.

:19:50. > :19:55.You look very pleased. Yes, it is You look very pleased. Yes, it is

:19:55. > :19:59.the best result you can get. I am so happy with this. I just tried to

:19:59. > :20:04.focus on my race and then I finished first. I was so surprised

:20:04. > :20:09.and happy. I was going to ask where the EU because it was a very tight

:20:09. > :20:14.finish and batteries but in an extra stride. Oh really? So it was

:20:14. > :20:18.the finish that saved me. Well done. Thank you. Inge Dekker following in

:20:18. > :20:21.the footsteps of the great Dutch sprinter. I think that is what

:20:21. > :20:28.Sharron Davies was referring to. She is an interesting character,

:20:28. > :20:32.Dekker, isn't she? Really interesting. It is funny how many

:20:32. > :20:36.athletes are amazing in the ball, but I remember at the World Short

:20:36. > :20:41.Course Championships last year she said she did not want to go out for

:20:41. > :20:51.the final. She said she did not feel right today. But she got it

:20:51. > :20:52.

:20:52. > :20:56.right today. She felt right in that race. What to raise decided it was

:20:57. > :21:00.to slip to straight out, but she lost it on that. It is one of those

:21:00. > :21:04.things, when Becker wants to race she races well, but when she does

:21:04. > :21:09.and then she doesn't bother. Butterfly is fast, but freestyle is

:21:09. > :21:16.even faster. If the 50m freestyle is your thing, you are the fastest

:21:16. > :21:23.human in water. And this man should know. What a race this is going to

:21:23. > :21:33.be. To be the fastest. The fastest in the water. The fastest in the

:21:33. > :21:43.world. Every sinew straining to hear the gun. 20 seconds. 32

:21:43. > :21:44.

:21:44. > :21:52.strokes. No breath. Until you hit the wall. You are in agony. You are

:21:52. > :22:02.in ecstasy. You are the fastest. has won it! The fastest in the

:22:02. > :22:07.

:22:07. > :22:17.world. Gold to Great Britain. Gold record holder Cielo Filho, only the

:22:17. > :22:21.

:22:21. > :22:31.second fastest resilient into the final. This will be fascinating.

:22:31. > :22:38.

:22:38. > :22:42.One length of the pool. The fastest Filho in lane five. He took about

:22:42. > :22:48.20 or 30 centimetres of the rest of the field. In freestyle, that is an

:22:48. > :22:57.awful lot. It looks like it is Cielo Filho. He has won it by

:22:57. > :23:01.miles! Cielo Filho has won it. The silver goes to Dotto of Italy, a

:23:01. > :23:07.big surprise. And the bronze has gone to Bernard of France. Goodness

:23:07. > :23:17.me, all over the place. Well, his team-mate looking a bit

:23:17. > :23:28.

:23:28. > :23:36.disappointed. The guy was already sprint freestyle at right now in

:23:36. > :23:42.the world. Successfully defending his title. He gets the gold in the

:23:42. > :23:47.53. Dotto takes silver and Bernard takes bronze. The second gold of

:23:47. > :23:53.the week for Cielo Filho. This has been an emotional week. Comforting

:23:53. > :23:56.him is an Olympic medallist in the freestyle. He is a got back in

:23:56. > :24:01.Brazil, so that would be his role model when he was growing up.

:24:01. > :24:08.word, isn't Brazilian swimming off- word, isn't Brazilian swimming off-

:24:08. > :24:15.line? Yes, they have always been good in the sprint events. We have

:24:15. > :24:20.seen Cielo Filho win took this meet and also sell well. -- silver. And

:24:20. > :24:24.we have got Liam Tancock. Yes, we will see him in a second or two. We

:24:24. > :24:28.are still trying to get Rebecca Adlington back. If she is the

:24:28. > :24:33.leader of the women's pack in terms of Team GB, then Liam Tancock is

:24:33. > :24:38.the leader of the men. He lined up in the semi-finals of the 50m

:24:38. > :24:40.backstroke. Tancock was in lane two. The big danger was Camille Lacourt

:24:40. > :24:50.The big danger was Camille Lacourt of France in lane four. Commentary

:24:50. > :24:59.

:24:59. > :25:02.once again comes from Adrian They have got to come up at 15. The

:25:02. > :25:06.judges have been a relatively relaxed on people coming up be on

:25:06. > :25:11.the 50 mark. My goodness me, Tancock is going well at the Kop --

:25:11. > :25:17.at the top of. My goodness me! He was very sluggish in the heats. He

:25:17. > :25:24.has blasted the first 35 here. I think he has got it. Yes, he has!

:25:24. > :25:31.He wins this first semi-final. was fast. That is incredible. Over

:25:31. > :25:36.half a second faster than his heat, half a second faster than his heat,

:25:36. > :25:43.on a 50! Thumbs-up. A good thumbs-up when you finished?

:25:43. > :25:47.Yes, I want to come out fast in each race I do. I take each race as

:25:47. > :25:50.an individual one whether it is a heat, final or semi-final. I just

:25:50. > :25:55.want to come here and get through the round. I have got my spot in

:25:55. > :25:58.the final tomorrow night and anything can happen. All those guys

:25:58. > :26:06.are going to be strong tomorrow. We have got world champions struck the

:26:06. > :26:10.years, 2005, 2007, 2009, you know, a new 100 backstage champion this

:26:10. > :26:13.year in Camille Lacourt, so it will be tough. Medals can come from any

:26:13. > :26:18.lane in the final and I have got one of those lanes and I have got a

:26:18. > :26:22.shot. What makes a perfect race? don't think there is such a thing

:26:22. > :26:25.as a perfect race. I went through with my coat this morning about how

:26:25. > :26:31.eyes on this morning, and how I can improve, and there were so many

:26:31. > :26:36.ways I can improve. I am going to go back and swim down, have a

:26:36. > :26:40.massage, have a good night's sleep, go for my race again and find areas

:26:40. > :26:44.that they can improve on and go faster. You know, I am looking

:26:44. > :26:51.forward to it. Lovely Liam Tancock. He has good at keeping it simple,

:26:51. > :26:54.isn't he? He loves racing, he loves that sort of competition and

:26:54. > :26:58.challenge against the best people in the world. One of the things he

:26:58. > :27:01.said there was to go back and look at the footage and tried to improve.

:27:01. > :27:05.As a swimmer, as an athlete, you always want to have the perfect

:27:05. > :27:09.race. I came out of the world record and said there were a couple

:27:09. > :27:13.of things wrong, you say you can go faster. I think if he does the same

:27:13. > :27:19.tomorrow night, then he could win it. I think he will win it if he

:27:19. > :27:24.does the same. It is the thing in the final, when that pressure is on,

:27:24. > :27:27.they try too hard. It is interesting because it is very

:27:27. > :27:30.important that he continues his success. I had an e-mail from

:27:30. > :27:37.someone the other day running a swimming meet pockets sewn that all

:27:37. > :27:43.these girls are turning up, 80% girls, 20% boys. Where have all the

:27:43. > :27:47.boys gone? I wonder if that is one of the negative side of having such

:27:47. > :27:53.a lopsided team. The women have been great and the men had not been

:27:53. > :27:58.so successful. Historically in men sport as a whole, there are more

:27:59. > :28:03.sports to choose from. If you are an up-and- coming youngster, I

:28:03. > :28:09.can't think of the name of the one I am thinking of, he was a great

:28:09. > :28:12.footballer and swimmer - James Beattie - he chose football. If you

:28:12. > :28:16.look at sport as a career and you are younger, if you're really good

:28:16. > :28:20.then you will go to a sport with money in it, and there is no money

:28:20. > :28:25.in swimming. Youngsters get to an age and life takes over and they

:28:25. > :28:31.don't want to do sport. It is so positive that we have got role-

:28:31. > :28:36.models from both men and women. Some news - Fran Halsall has

:28:36. > :28:40.qualified for the final of the at 50m freestyle. She was 5th fastest.

:28:40. > :28:45.Kate Haywood in the 50m breaststroke, she just missed out.

:28:45. > :28:48.She was night fastest and missed a place in the final bike to hundreds

:28:48. > :28:52.of a second. You have seen from those shots bear how supportive the

:28:52. > :28:57.rest of the swimmers are when they are not competing, they are there

:28:57. > :29:00.to cheer everyone on. The one he got a big hug from Betty Adlington

:29:00. > :29:05.was Keri-Anne Payne because her World Championships in terms of

:29:05. > :29:11.medals was over when she qualified for the Olympics in the 10

:29:11. > :29:15.kilometres. Sharron Davies caught up with Keri-Anne Payne in Shanghai.

:29:15. > :29:21.I remember getting nervous in the run-up to Moscow. Is that how you

:29:21. > :29:23.feel? Definitely. The last three years, to be honest, have been

:29:23. > :29:31.geared up to making the Olympic team and I have not let myself

:29:31. > :29:35.think be up -- think pass that. I am really pleased that I am going

:29:35. > :29:39.to be there as a competitor now. But it really has not quite sunk in

:29:39. > :29:43.yet. I'm sure when I have a bit of time off and get back home and see

:29:43. > :29:49.some of the stuff that has been in the papers that London is only one

:29:49. > :29:52.year away. It is very scary, but really exciting at the same time.

:29:52. > :29:56.Defending your title was important, but what was more important, the

:29:56. > :30:00.title of qualifying for London? me it was always a qualifying for

:30:00. > :30:04.London. It was amazing that I won it and I was so pleased to regain

:30:04. > :30:09.my title, which is amazing. Especially with a year to go until

:30:09. > :30:13.the Olympics. But my whole game- plan all year has been geared

:30:13. > :30:16.around a long and boring qualification process which has

:30:16. > :30:20.ended in being top 10 at the World Championships, which I did.

:30:20. > :30:24.Anything better than that for me was always going to be a bonus.

:30:24. > :30:27.am so excited about having a home crowd for you guys. I never had

:30:27. > :30:31.that experience, but it must be a big part of what you are looking

:30:31. > :30:35.forward to. I can't wait. It is going to be amazing. Every time I

:30:35. > :30:39.have been to Beijing, Rome, or come here to Shanghai, there is always

:30:39. > :30:42.their home crowd and it is unbelievable. Every time there is

:30:42. > :30:48.someone Chinese swimming in Shanghai at the moment, the noise

:30:48. > :30:51.is unbelievable. The crowd just get behind them. Hopefully having that

:30:51. > :30:55.noise for us as British athletes will be amazing. And there is

:30:55. > :30:59.another important event that you are organising for 2012. Yes, I am

:30:59. > :31:02.getting married a month afterwards, which is plenty of time, I am sure.

:31:02. > :31:06.I have been doing a lot of organising for the wedding. It has

:31:06. > :31:11.been really fun, I must admit. I have loved every minute of it so

:31:11. > :31:14.far. I have just got invitations and table decorations left, but all

:31:14. > :31:24.the big decisions have been made. 2012 really could be your perfect

:31:24. > :31:28.

:31:28. > :31:35.here. Whatever happens it will be a Lizzie Simmonds just squeezed into

:31:35. > :31:45.the final of the 200m. She was very sick this morning and it was touch

:31:45. > :31:49.

:31:49. > :31:54.and go whether she would make the four. Lizzie Simmonds has done well

:31:54. > :32:04.to turn up here. She is not particularly well. She has an upset

:32:04. > :32:12.tummy. But Lizzie Simmonds did really well. It will be interested

:32:12. > :32:18.-- interesting to see Hocking it. She is on form this year. Lizzie

:32:18. > :32:25.Simmonds of Great Britain at the bottom of the picture. Decent start.

:32:25. > :32:29.Her tactic will be to see how much energy she has got. Frankly of the

:32:29. > :32:35.USA in the middle. As expected. I wonder whether she will try to get

:32:35. > :32:45.the world record here. She is one a hundredth of a second underneath of

:32:45. > :32:48.

:32:48. > :32:54.the world record at the 100m at Split. The world record holder,

:32:54. > :33:04.Coventry, did not make the final here. No, she had a year off and

:33:04. > :33:04.

:33:04. > :33:09.she is struggling to make the form. Lizzie Franklin on pace. She has

:33:09. > :33:15.dropped to 0.2 of a second below. Sometimes I wonder, the excitement

:33:15. > :33:22.of the final, the Jones of Maisie - - maybe breaking a world record, it

:33:22. > :33:29.gets to us. She had a lead over Hocking towards the end of the

:33:29. > :33:34.first length. Hocking swimming well in the last few leads. Hocking it

:33:34. > :33:41.does look very good and she is just stalking Franklin. Franklin over

:33:41. > :33:50.first. Hocking second. And Lizzie Simmonds dropping a bit now,

:33:50. > :33:59.backing sixth position. Just outside of our shot. Franklin of

:33:59. > :34:07.the USA looking good and now beginning to swim away from the

:34:07. > :34:12.Australian in lane five. Franklin gets the gold. Franklin, the new

:34:12. > :34:18.world champion, aged 16, in the women's 200m backstroke. That is

:34:18. > :34:23.amazing. I think that is a new American record. Very good swim

:34:23. > :34:31.indeed. And it was just three- tenths of a second outside the

:34:31. > :34:36.world record. Belinda Hocking it has broken the Commonwealth record.

:34:36. > :34:40.A fantastic swimmer from parking. I thought she was on form this year.

:34:40. > :34:45.Reversing the disappointment of last year's Commonwealth Games. She

:34:45. > :34:51.was still in bed towards the end, but Franklin, what a fantastic gold

:34:51. > :34:56.medal. A lot of talent and promise for next year, 2012. We will be

:34:56. > :35:06.seeing a lot of her, I think. I think she will be challenging for

:35:06. > :35:07.

:35:07. > :35:11.three or four gold medals. She has destroyed her lifetime best. And

:35:11. > :35:16.free tenths of a second outside the world record. When I do not think

:35:16. > :35:21.she really knows yet how to swim it properly. How exciting if you are a

:35:21. > :35:28.coach and you have Franklin, someone like that, walking into

:35:28. > :35:37.your club. An absolute dream. I wonder if she has stopped growing

:35:37. > :35:47.yet. That is the thing. Here she is. She is very good. 200 backstroke

:35:47. > :35:50.

:35:50. > :36:00.now. A new Commonwealth record for Belinda Hocking. And Lizzie

:36:00. > :36:05.I know you wanted to do really well at that but you were poorly this

:36:05. > :36:12.morning. Yes, I spent two hours in the bathroom. I was just about

:36:12. > :36:18.getting in there. I did about a 600m warm-up, just trying to

:36:18. > :36:22.conserve energy. It just did not happen on the night. I am a bit

:36:22. > :36:26.disappointed but there is nothing you can do about these things so I

:36:26. > :36:36.just have to put it in perspective and Lochte were excessive. Devera

:36:36. > :36:40.aid, and it is London. -- and look towards the next year. Definitely,

:36:40. > :36:45.and it is in London. We are not going to have any problems with

:36:45. > :36:50.food. It will be unfinished business. I will have to prove I am

:36:50. > :36:57.back amongst the best. You do have a little bit of time off. It was

:36:57. > :37:07.raised turf, and that is what you did. I gave it everything. We will

:37:07. > :37:08.

:37:09. > :37:15.CLARE BALDING: Difficult therefore Lizzie Simmonds, but wrong to

:37:15. > :37:21.assume you cannot get food poisoning in London. You have to

:37:21. > :37:27.look after yourself. A lot of the teams have dietitians looking after

:37:27. > :37:31.what food you are eating. Sometimes it can happen. Can it happen worse

:37:31. > :37:39.because you are cup-tied and you're nervous? When you are getting ready

:37:39. > :37:43.to race, if you are the most successful you are going to be. --

:37:43. > :37:48.You are the most susceptible you are going to be. You are highly

:37:48. > :37:57.tuned... What did you say? I'd thought you said you sleep with

:37:57. > :38:00.horses! You see it with courses! So things can happen. You have to

:38:00. > :38:05.manage yourself and look after yourself and there are some

:38:05. > :38:10.supplements you can take, vitamins etc, so now is the time to get it

:38:10. > :38:15.right if she is going to. But you can see that the first 100 was good

:38:15. > :38:21.and the second was not so good. So it that proves she was a bit sick.

:38:21. > :38:24.On paper she was second fastest in the world last year. So you are

:38:24. > :38:31.always disappointed as an athlete because you want to perform at the

:38:31. > :38:37.right time. Even with the Olympics being in London, would you suggest

:38:37. > :38:41.to the swimmers that they drink bottled water only? Yes. Around the

:38:41. > :38:48.world you always tend to drink only bottled water. But you can never be

:38:48. > :38:53.too careful. In the athletes' village, we use the gel on the

:38:53. > :38:59.hands to kill bacteria. So you cover all... And do not clean your

:38:59. > :39:01.teeth with tap water, either, or have ice-cubes. When you go into a

:39:01. > :39:06.championship, you think you're going to put everything at risk if

:39:06. > :39:11.you get ill. So do not get ill. have not yet talked about one big

:39:11. > :39:16.name, Michael Phelps. He qualified fastest for the qualifier of the

:39:16. > :39:19.men's 100m butterfly. He has won more silver medals than gold medals

:39:19. > :39:29.this week and that is not a normal thing for him so he had just one

:39:29. > :39:43.

:39:43. > :39:47.fastest for the 100m men's Championship final, Michael Phelps

:39:47. > :39:53.of the USA. He never has a particularly good start against the

:39:53. > :40:03.rest of the field but we have seen him start comfortably down the

:40:03. > :40:25.

:40:25. > :40:32.strongly. -- Michael Phelps. This is not all going Michael Phelps'

:40:32. > :40:40.away at the moment. He did not hit the wall particularly well. He

:40:40. > :40:50.looked over. He now knows he has won the gold medal. 50.71 is fast!

:40:50. > :40:55.He was not sure when he touched the wall. Gold medal for Michael Phelps.

:40:55. > :41:02.Kisses for the girl friend, the sister, and forever is standing

:41:02. > :41:12.medal Michael Phelps had that one. I thought McGill might have pushed

:41:12. > :41:16.

:41:16. > :41:22.further. Michael Phelps, well, that is a supreme achievement if you

:41:22. > :41:30.think about it. The butterfly has always been his signature strip. He

:41:30. > :41:37.burst onto the scene in Sydney in 2000 as a 15-year-old. You can get

:41:37. > :41:47.him on the other events. But there is no taking the butterfly of him,

:41:47. > :41:47.

:41:47. > :41:57.even when he is a little bit under par. World champion in 2007. World

:41:57. > :42:05.champion in 2009 on the hundredm butterfly. And now in China, gold

:42:05. > :42:15.medal and gold medal again. Happy fan club. In the end he won it

:42:15. > :42:17.

:42:17. > :42:22.comfortably. McGill with bronze and Interesting that even at probably

:42:22. > :42:30.80% of his capability, Michael Phelps is still good enough to see

:42:30. > :42:35.off the rest of the world. Yes, on the 200m freestyle, it is not his

:42:35. > :42:39.main event and he is susceptible but next year we will see a faster,

:42:39. > :42:44.fitter Michael Phelps. His mother has always been the disciplinarian.

:42:44. > :42:49.She will be the one... As much as his coach. She will say, you will

:42:49. > :42:54.get the other stuff. You will get on and swim. You are going to

:42:54. > :43:00.perform and you will not lose your title. What would have to say at

:43:00. > :43:06.this stage, bearing in mind you won eight gold medals in Beijing, and

:43:06. > :43:13.that is not going to happen again, how many medals can he win in

:43:13. > :43:19.London? He is not going to go for eight. He is not going to go for

:43:19. > :43:26.nine. That is the only way he can beat his eight in a way. He is

:43:26. > :43:31.going to do the relays. I hope he is going to do the 200m freestyle

:43:31. > :43:36.because I want to see him. I think he will go for seven races with the

:43:36. > :43:42.relays. Just to bring you up-to- date on Becky Adlington. We have

:43:42. > :43:46.contact again with Shanghai but Becky has gone off to do her urine

:43:46. > :43:55.test. So we hope that between now and the end of the programme we

:43:55. > :44:01.will be able to talk to her! It is the women's 400m medley relay.

:44:01. > :44:11.Ellen Gandy was on butterfly. Let's be realistic, the USA are very good

:44:11. > :44:15.

:44:15. > :44:22.evening. Great Britain in lane two, and a good lane. The USA were the

:44:22. > :44:29.fastest qualifiers. Slow reaction from Davies up their in lane number

:44:29. > :44:35.two. A very good start indeed for these remote from the USA. The

:44:35. > :44:38.crowd are going nuts. They are getting into this meet. One day to

:44:38. > :44:42.go and they have had some great success. Not much to cheer about

:44:42. > :44:46.now but right now, head-to-head with the Americans and the Russians.

:44:46. > :44:56.And I do not think they would have it any other way. Georgia Davies

:44:56. > :45:01.

:45:01. > :45:06.turning in six. Very good underwater. Anastasia Zueva Zueva

:45:06. > :45:16.of Russia also starting pretty well. And the American is starting to

:45:16. > :45:30.

:45:30. > :45:35.Well done Georgia Davies. Yes, she is putting the team in good

:45:35. > :45:45.contention. A great a takeover there. Well, you could not split

:45:45. > :45:58.

:45:58. > :46:01.the swimmers in the middle, could Holding her stroke well. When she

:46:02. > :46:06.rushes it too much, she get to ahead of herself. But this is

:46:06. > :46:12.wonderful. She should not be taking this much of Efimova, but she is.

:46:12. > :46:17.Well, she swam well in the individual. The Chinese one is the

:46:17. > :46:27.one I am surprised about. She is one lane up from the USA. This is a

:46:27. > :46:44.

:46:44. > :46:47.very good swimmer for her. Starting the USA can be caught. China have

:46:47. > :46:57.got a very good sprint freestyle at the end. This will be a contender

:46:57. > :47:02.

:47:02. > :47:08.for the medals. Gandy has got a lot of work to do. Getting quite a few

:47:08. > :47:18.waves, I imagine, stuck in between China and Canada. The Canadians are

:47:18. > :47:18.

:47:18. > :47:22.in the at -- outside lane. Look at this. Mr Franklin coming in on the

:47:22. > :47:28.back leg. Wouldn't it be a great evening for her if she could take

:47:28. > :47:32.this to a world record? The Chinese are half a second ahead. They are

:47:32. > :47:38.ahead of the Australians. The Australians are now coming into the

:47:38. > :47:48.bronze medal position. Dingjan doing the freestyle. Not much known

:47:48. > :47:54.

:47:54. > :48:04.Franklin has had a fantastic evening already. -- Melissa

:48:04. > :48:04.

:48:04. > :48:08.Franklin. She is trying to take the USA team to a world record. The

:48:08. > :48:13.world record is held by the People's Republic of China. Look at

:48:14. > :48:21.that! Just outside the world record, but

:48:22. > :48:27.only just. Second gold of the night for Franklin. Britain finished 6th

:48:27. > :48:35.after Germany and Canada were after Germany and Canada were

:48:35. > :48:39.disqualified. Jorja, I am sure you are pleased.

:48:39. > :48:44.Yes, I am definitely pleased with my time. I did not expect to be in

:48:44. > :48:49.this final, so it was a bonus really. To be under a minute for

:48:49. > :48:53.the second time I am pleased, it shows that I am a bit more

:48:53. > :48:58.consistent. It makes you a world finalist, too. Yes, I am really

:48:58. > :49:06.excited about that. One lady that already have that experience, Allen,

:49:06. > :49:10.how was it? It was pretty hard. A lot of fun doing the relays. Week

:49:10. > :49:14.all did our best so become be disappointed. You can't be

:49:14. > :49:19.disappointed with that. You have got your 50 to come. You must be

:49:19. > :49:22.excited about that one tomorrow. am, I am really excited. It is just

:49:22. > :49:27.who get to the wall first. I have got a good lane next to Therese,

:49:27. > :49:31.one of the best stars in the world. If I can latch on to her and bring

:49:31. > :49:37.it home, it would be a good race. She can still make mistakes, like

:49:37. > :49:41.sheet tonight. I know, bless her. It is anyone's game, I suppose.

:49:41. > :49:45.And she has got the final of the 50m freestyle tonight. I am

:49:45. > :49:50.delighted to say that Rebecca Adlington is back in position and

:49:50. > :49:55.we have contact with Shanghai. Let's try once again. Becky, your

:49:55. > :50:01.reaction to becoming world champion in the 800 metres? I can't actually

:50:01. > :50:06.believe it. I am so happy. It is the one thing that I hadn't

:50:06. > :50:10.achieved. To come away with a gold and a silver, I could not ask for a

:50:10. > :50:15.better result. It was a fabulous race to watch because Lotte Friis

:50:15. > :50:20.was put in you so hard throughout. How was it to deal with physically

:50:20. > :50:25.and mentally? Physically it was tough. I knew that going into the

:50:25. > :50:28.race it was going to be a challenge. Battling in the heat so, I normally

:50:28. > :50:33.have to battle with Lotte Friis. I knew she was going to be there, and

:50:33. > :50:38.I saw her keeping on edging away. I tried to stick with as much as I

:50:38. > :50:44.could and just go for it on the last 15. Mark Foster is with me in

:50:44. > :50:50.the studio. Well done again! Thank you. Are you starting to believe in

:50:50. > :50:57.yourself now? Hopefully, yes. It is one of those things, do you always

:50:57. > :51:01.have that issue, little doubts creeping in. I am trying my best,

:51:01. > :51:06.and I'd definitely went into that swim feeling a lot more confident

:51:06. > :51:10.after the 800 metres heat. After the 400 but was not feeling very

:51:10. > :51:14.confident. It was totally different going into this race, and I was so

:51:14. > :51:19.pleased to come away with a gold medal. And the time as well. I was

:51:19. > :51:23.very happy with that. It was unbelievably fast. Are you going to

:51:23. > :51:30.come home now? Do you want me to help you with your starts and

:51:30. > :51:33.turns? I need the work, don't I? I have worked a lot more on my terms,

:51:33. > :51:37.but it doesn't come as naturally to me as the other guys. You were

:51:38. > :51:41.always amazing at that and it is definitely at something I have got

:51:41. > :51:47.to improve on over the next 12 months. I'm glad there is something

:51:47. > :51:52.I have got to improve on. I know what I have got to do. In terms of

:51:52. > :51:56.your plans for the London Olympics, would you be looking to may be

:51:56. > :52:02.dropped the 200 from the programme? Yes, probably. I think it is

:52:02. > :52:07.something that I just don't have enough speed on. On a 200 and just

:52:07. > :52:12.can't get going. It is a bit too quick for me. I would still love to

:52:12. > :52:17.do the 4x200, but I think the 400 and 800 is my main focus. You love

:52:17. > :52:20.that relay situation, don't you? And you are so much part of the

:52:20. > :52:26.team. All of the team best supporting you, I guess you are

:52:26. > :52:30.doing it for them as much as for yourself? Yes, 100%. I have such a

:52:30. > :52:37.good support network. The team have been absolutely fantastic. They

:52:37. > :52:41.have held me this week and cat meet up. That is what the team is all

:52:41. > :52:47.about. And my coach and my family and friends. I would not be able to

:52:47. > :52:50.do it without them. You are very good on Twitter, too, and you were

:52:50. > :52:59.trending earlier today, did you know that? Yes, someone just told

:52:59. > :53:02.me. I saw I got over $25,000. great! And lovely for everyone to

:53:02. > :53:07.share this moment. For you, personally, this is a massive

:53:07. > :53:12.achievement. It completes the set of championship titles, doesn't it?

:53:12. > :53:16.I know, I can't believe it. That is all Bill kept saying to me

:53:16. > :53:20.afterwards, no one can take that away, no matter what happens next

:53:21. > :53:25.year. I am so happy I do have that set. It is something I can always

:53:25. > :53:30.look back on and it will be amazing to hopefully tell my kids one day.

:53:30. > :53:34.Don't plan that far ahead just yet! Marchand I went to the aquatics

:53:34. > :53:37.centre, and you will get a chance to get in there as soon as you come

:53:37. > :53:39.home. You will be able to train their whenever you want. How much

:53:39. > :53:44.can you see yourself using it and getting familiar with those

:53:44. > :53:49.surroundings? Obviously our Olympic trials next year are in that Paul,

:53:49. > :53:53.so we have got a British slimming camp in October that we get to go

:53:53. > :53:58.down there and obviously it is a bit far for me to travel to on a

:53:58. > :54:04.daily basis, being in Nottingham, but hopefully a couple of cans down

:54:04. > :54:09.there to get used to it. It looks amazing. I saw on television mark's

:54:09. > :54:13.race. I think he should make a comeback for next year! He said no

:54:13. > :54:18.to that. He was very tempted. So you will come home when, and what

:54:18. > :54:22.is the immediate plan, a bit of a rest? We fly home as a team on

:54:22. > :54:25.Monday. We get home late Monday night, and then Tuesday morning I

:54:25. > :54:32.have got to come to London. Hopefully I will get an hour with

:54:32. > :54:37.my family. Three days of media and then holiday! I can't wait. A good

:54:37. > :54:41.holiday planned? Definitely. I am going away with my boyfriend to

:54:41. > :54:45.Greece. I can't wait to lie on a beach and not move. Becky, you are

:54:45. > :54:48.a superstar, not just for what you have done in the swimming-pool, but

:54:48. > :54:57.putting up with everything and coming back to talk to us. Thank

:54:57. > :55:00.you. Thank you. And very well done. You can send her at your

:55:00. > :55:04.congratulations on Twitter. If you have been inspired by any of these

:55:04. > :55:14.swimmers, this is how you can get involved.

:55:14. > :55:19.

:55:20. > :55:28.Come on! I'm in. The big splash. Everyone is doing it. To find out

:55:28. > :55:32.more, visit the BBC website. Mark, of the you did it full time

:55:32. > :55:37.and you were very, very fast, there is so much for people to gain, not

:55:37. > :55:43.only in terms of enjoyment but also in terms of exercise. Yes, it is a

:55:43. > :55:47.gateway to other things. People like surfing, windsurfing, canoeing,

:55:47. > :55:51.water-skiing, any other sport and you need the basis of storming

:55:51. > :55:56.first and foremost. It is not just the health benefits, but also the

:55:56. > :56:00.social benefits. You can interact with other people. It is giving

:56:00. > :56:05.people opportunities that people know they can go to a Paul. The

:56:05. > :56:08.sight and sound and feel of the water is very relaxing. Lovely to

:56:08. > :56:12.talk to Rebecca Adlington. Where do you rank her now in terms of

:56:12. > :56:19.British Women, in terms of world swimming? No. 1. She dominates her

:56:19. > :56:22.event. But historically for British swimming. I would say the best she

:56:22. > :56:27.has ever been. We have never had someone who has won two golds in

:56:27. > :56:32.one Olympics. She has got this next Olympics coming up. She is 22, 23

:56:32. > :56:38.years of age. She could probably do a couple more Olympics. She has got

:56:38. > :56:42.a lot more in her and a lot more things she can improve on. As far

:56:42. > :56:46.as swimming technically, Lotte Friis is likely to be to cater.

:56:46. > :56:51.Every time she puts one arm in, she kicks won two every stroke. Look at

:56:51. > :56:55.Becky and she has got more of a six-speed leg kick. More of a

:56:55. > :57:00.swimmer cake, in a sense. She catches more water. She is a lot

:57:00. > :57:04.more fluent than the other swimmers. She gets it right at the right time.

:57:05. > :57:11.She is now back in form. In that form she is unbeatable come next

:57:11. > :57:16.year. And number one in the world. I really respect her she has

:57:16. > :57:20.responded to a couple of that championship. My word, has she come

:57:20. > :57:25.back strong? That is a gold and silver this week. Yes, at the

:57:25. > :57:32.beginning of the week you saw the press here, all about the 400. But

:57:32. > :57:37.that is not her main event. She did not expect that 400 at the Olympic

:57:37. > :57:41.Games. Now she has got to events. She can going for the 400, not her

:57:41. > :57:45.main event, she can go in and have a bit of fun with it. But she

:57:45. > :57:49.always looks at the other people as the main players. Especially in the

:57:49. > :57:54.800, she dominates that event and everyone is looking at Becky

:57:54. > :57:59.Adlington. She can look other people and put pressure on them.

:57:59. > :58:02.She needs to work on has been a little bit more. And her

:58:02. > :58:06.performance continues to inspire everyone who watches. If you want

:58:06. > :58:10.to see the final day of competition from the World Swimming

:58:10. > :58:16.Championships in Shanghai it live on the red button at 11am, and on

:58:16. > :58:24.BBC Two at 5pm tomorrow. That features Hannah Miley, Liam Tancock,

:58:30. > :58:34.BBC Two at 6pm today. And the men's 100. At 4pm on the red button B
