:00:50. > :00:54.I can't actually believe it. I am so, so happy. The final of the

:00:54. > :00:58.women's 800 metres freestyle. into the race it was going to be a

:00:58. > :01:02.challenge. Lotte Friis of Denmark stating her purpose immediately.

:01:02. > :01:10.do normally have to battle with her. I tried to stick with as much as I

:01:10. > :01:14.can and then trust go for it on the last 15. It is very close indeed!

:01:14. > :01:18.To come away with a gold and silver, I couldn't ask for more. Rebecca

:01:18. > :01:23.Adlington, world champion of the world -- women's 800 metres

:01:23. > :01:26.freestyle. They are team have been absolutely fantastic. My family and

:01:26. > :01:30.friends have fully supported me. I would not be able to do it without

:01:30. > :01:37.them. That is a cracker! World champion 800 metres freestyle,

:01:37. > :01:46.Rebecca Adlington of Great Britain. I have got the whole SatNav. I

:01:46. > :01:49.can't actually believe it. I am so, so happy. The new world champions

:01:49. > :01:55.Rebecca Adlington and Keri-Anne Payne with the team sheet the camp

:01:55. > :02:00.showing their support for Liam Tancock, Hannah Miley, Fran Halsall

:02:00. > :02:03.and all the other British swimmers in this Championships in Shanghai.

:02:03. > :02:09.We have only got an hour for all the highlights, so plenty of action

:02:09. > :02:13.to pack in. Smiley Miley is in the final of her favoured event, the

:02:13. > :02:18.gruelling 400m individual medley. She just missed out on a medal two

:02:18. > :02:24.years ago. Liam Tancock is the defending world champion for 50m

:02:24. > :02:29.backstroke. Fran Halsall has had her training truncated and it has

:02:29. > :02:33.cost her. She is out for redemption in the 50-metre freestyle. In

:02:33. > :02:39.contrast, everything Ryan Lochte touches turns to gold. Four of them

:02:39. > :02:47.so far. Just the 400 left. Mark Foster is alongside me for the

:02:47. > :02:52.final time this week. We will hear from him. Let's get straight to the

:02:52. > :03:02.action and join our Istomin team out in China. Adrian Moorhouse and

:03:02. > :03:20.

:03:21. > :03:26.Tancock has had a very good start indeed. He looks good. He has got

:03:26. > :03:30.about a quarter of a metre on the Lacourt. Are they going belt --

:03:30. > :03:35.will is Zandberg. The rest of the field starting to come back now. It

:03:35. > :03:40.is going to be really tight. It is really tight. Liam Tancock has got

:03:40. > :03:44.it! Well done, Liam Tancock. World champion again. Successfully

:03:44. > :03:52.defending their championship title he won in Rome. Liam Tancock is

:03:52. > :03:58.world record holder and twice world champion. What a great swim. I was

:03:58. > :04:02.thinking please, please, please Liam. That was all down to her --

:04:02. > :04:12.who had their arm over when it counted against the wall. Liam

:04:12. > :04:14.

:04:14. > :04:20.Tancock had a great start. That was quite a distance. Liam Tancock goes

:04:20. > :04:27.in first, and that is what makes the difference. Lacourt's arms not

:04:27. > :04:36.just -- just not long enough. So, Liam Tancock world champion again.

:04:36. > :04:40.A brilliant swimmer from him. He won it by a mile! Followed by a

:04:40. > :04:44.Camille Lacourt of France and Camille Lacourt of France and

:04:44. > :04:49.Zandberg in the third. Well done, Liam Tancock. Many congratulations.

:04:49. > :04:52.A fantastic defence of that title. It was really amazing out there.

:04:52. > :04:57.These World Championships have been fantastic for the team. We missed

:04:57. > :05:03.out on a couple of occasions by a few 100 so, but all in all the team

:05:03. > :05:08.has done an amazing job. To comment on the last few, the 50 backstroke,

:05:08. > :05:12.I was defending the 2009 title. When I made it into the final I

:05:12. > :05:16.thought, you know, anyone could win it. It could come from any blame.

:05:16. > :05:20.But if they want to beat me they have got to come and get me. I

:05:20. > :05:24.needed to do everything I needed to do, get in there, get a good start

:05:24. > :05:29.and take the race to it. It resulted in a gold and a well

:05:29. > :05:35.turned into a muddle again. I am top of the world! -- it turned into

:05:35. > :05:39.a world champion. Next year you have got the home crowd advantage.

:05:39. > :05:44.The crowd out he has been fantastic. The pool is amazing. That is what

:05:44. > :05:50.is going to be like in London. We have seen the poll now and there is

:05:50. > :05:54.less than a year ago. But there are 1,500 1000 fans at here cheering

:05:54. > :05:58.for the Chinese. In London they will be cheering for the Brits, and

:05:58. > :06:03.there is no better feeling. That will really boost us. You have got

:06:03. > :06:06.to convert that 50 into 100. Yes, I have been doing that for a number

:06:06. > :06:10.of years. The training is working towards that. I am getting stronger

:06:10. > :06:14.and stronger, but there are always areas to improve. I will sit down

:06:14. > :06:20.with my coach back in Loughborough and work on a strategy to push me

:06:20. > :06:26.forward. I have got one of the best teams around me, not just my coach

:06:26. > :06:30.and support staff, but I am in a training circle with some good

:06:30. > :06:35.people, all like-minded people with the same dream. It is a nice

:06:35. > :06:40.environment. World champion for the second time in a row. Great

:06:40. > :06:45.Britain's Liam Tancock defending that title he won in Rome. And he

:06:45. > :06:54.in Shanghai he is world champion again in the men's 50m backstroke.

:06:54. > :07:04.The world record holder and double world champion. That is his 5th

:07:04. > :07:09.

:07:09. > :07:19.He has now equalled the most successful men in the World

:07:19. > :07:19.

:07:19. > :08:07.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 48 seconds

:08:07. > :08:14.Championships history for Great Liam Tancock is perfectly entitled

:08:14. > :08:19.to say his favoured world -- word, boom! The difference in size

:08:19. > :08:25.between those three men is amazing. Liam Tancock is 6 ft, but look at

:08:25. > :08:29.these guys! Zandberg is 6 ft 8, and Lacourt is 6 ft 6. It almost made -

:08:29. > :08:32.- makes Liam's achievement even more successful because their arms

:08:32. > :08:37.are longer than his. The most impressive thing was going into

:08:37. > :08:40.those flags on the last couple of strokes. I must admit, I thought

:08:40. > :08:44.Zandberg and Lacourt, with the length of their arms at the end

:08:44. > :08:48.would touch first. It is not always the biggest swimmer that wins

:08:48. > :08:55.actually. Swimmers tend to be tall, but Liam Tancock is not small at

:08:55. > :09:01.six foot. No, he is not. But, unfortunately, is not an Olympic

:09:01. > :09:11.event. Can he be a factor in the 100m. He was sick in the final of

:09:11. > :09:12.

:09:12. > :09:17.the 100m. Yes, and he came 6th in the Olympic Games. Some people come

:09:17. > :09:21.from the 200m down to the 100m. So you have got back end swimmers and

:09:21. > :09:29.speed some us. He has got loads of speed. He has got shorter arms and

:09:29. > :09:33.a lot of turnover. The thing he will work gone for the next year is

:09:33. > :09:37.working on that back end, getting up with his speed and then working

:09:37. > :09:42.on that back end so he does not tire towards the end. Lacourt does

:09:42. > :09:47.this very successfully, doesn't he? Yes, but I think he will be able to

:09:47. > :09:52.do this. It was in the Olympics three years ago, so he has worked

:09:52. > :09:57.on it before. He has worked on his speed. Speed is a natural thing.

:09:57. > :10:05.You can work on it, but you have it naturally. He has loads of speed

:10:05. > :10:09.but he need to work on that back end. He is genuinely excited about

:10:09. > :10:13.it. You could hear that in his interview, he is already thinking

:10:13. > :10:17.about that crowd and the cheering been for him. He is a big event man

:10:17. > :10:22.and always rises to the occasion. Absolutely. Every final he has been

:10:22. > :10:28.in, he is Commonwealth champion, European champion, he has won

:10:28. > :10:31.everything over the 50m, but over 100, European medallist, world

:10:31. > :10:35.medallist. He gets a medal every time, but the Olympics is the one

:10:35. > :10:40.he needs to do. He was 6th last stand. He needs to work on

:10:40. > :10:45.everything he does, do more cross- training. At the moment he will

:10:45. > :10:50.walk away from their going, I am world champion. That is fantastic.

:10:50. > :10:56.But next year there is another 50m. He made the final of the 50, he is

:10:56. > :10:59.only a couple of tents away from winning. He loves a challenge.

:10:59. > :11:03.it can be done. Liam Tancock will have a lot of attention focused on

:11:03. > :11:08.him in the run-up to the Olympic Games, and rightly so. And so as

:11:08. > :11:17.well will Hannah Miley. She is a really happy, bubbly, positive 21-

:11:17. > :11:27.year-old. She is coached in Aberdeen shared by her father. --

:11:27. > :11:29.

:11:29. > :11:39.Aberdeenshire. Hannah Miley wins gold at the European Championships!

:11:39. > :11:47.

:11:47. > :11:51.She swims 80,000 metres a week. My dad has always been my coach and

:11:51. > :11:55.I have not really known any other way. Like any other relationship

:11:56. > :11:59.you will have your ups and downs, but in the end we always managed to

:11:59. > :12:02.work it out. There is pressure because we are in the same house.

:12:02. > :12:09.But the quality of information that to get his second to none.

:12:09. > :12:13.Sometimes too much. He has worked with Ian Thorpe, lots of top

:12:13. > :12:22.Olympic athletes. I feel he knows what he is doing. But I can't

:12:22. > :12:26.really challenge that. OK, 37.3. This was your invention. It is

:12:26. > :12:29.basically in two parts. The main programming unit, which is this

:12:30. > :12:37.component here. And the pace or itself, the sounding unit which

:12:37. > :12:42.goes underneath the swim cap on the side of the head. Each beep relates

:12:42. > :12:47.to each entry. And it has had some high-profile users. Yes, Ian Thorpe

:12:47. > :12:51.used it before he broke his first world record. He started to use

:12:51. > :13:01.this and then broke the world record. It turns out that in Thorpe

:13:01. > :13:04.

:13:04. > :13:14.is quite a fan. Hannah Miley. That is awesome, he knows my name. That

:13:14. > :13:17.

:13:17. > :13:22.is pretty cool actually. I'm going I quite like being that bit

:13:22. > :13:26.different. Saying I did 12 sessions a week, and they do a bit of rock

:13:26. > :13:30.climbing, because not many other athletes do it. Have you ever been

:13:30. > :13:37.scared of heights? Yes, my first climb, I got to halfway and then

:13:37. > :13:43.thought, I have got to get down. I was actually quite scared. That

:13:43. > :13:48.really hurts. The Chinese suction caps release any sort trigger

:13:48. > :13:52.points, but it looks horrific when you see it happening. Patrick, your

:13:52. > :13:59.schedule is not exactly easy. Father, coach, inventor and

:13:59. > :14:05.helicopter pilot. Well, that pays the bills! That is my job, my

:14:05. > :14:10.profession. I flew in the army, and I have been flying on the North Sea

:14:10. > :14:14.for almost 22 years. How difficult do you find it when you see your

:14:14. > :14:20.daughter struggling? I don't find it difficult because, as a coach,

:14:20. > :14:23.it is information. It is pretty clinical poolside. If she does get

:14:23. > :14:33.ill during a session, pushes herself and gets sick, that is part

:14:33. > :14:40.

:14:40. > :14:46.of the process. I am not a fan of This is a very different setting to

:14:46. > :14:50.those training in Loughborough would be used to. Yes, you have got

:14:50. > :14:54.so much support behind your club and the young ones, and that's what

:14:54. > :14:58.makes it all the more special. It is a nice get away. If you want to

:14:58. > :15:01.come and hide somewhere and chain without being disturbed, come here.

:15:01. > :15:05.Hannah Miley doesn't have a great butterfly. After that she is really

:15:05. > :15:12.good. I am now going into the event with a bit more experience, a bit

:15:12. > :15:16.more know how, and hopefully nothing should faze me. Hannah

:15:16. > :15:20.Miley swam so well, but she has come up for the... For every missed

:15:20. > :15:25.opportunity, like getting 4th again, it is a huge driving.. You don't

:15:25. > :15:35.want that to happen again. You use it as fuel to come back fighting

:15:35. > :15:39.

:15:39. > :15:43.faster and stronger next time this championships. Hannah Miley of

:15:43. > :15:50.Great Britain does in Laina seven and has a chance of a medal here. A

:15:50. > :16:00.very good chance indeed. The fastest qualifier. That was

:16:00. > :16:07.

:16:07. > :16:10.Championships in Shanghai. Stephanie Rice at the top in that

:16:10. > :16:18.Yellow Hat of Australia. The world record holder. She has said it

:16:18. > :16:24.twice. Three-time Olympic champion. Expect her to go out reasonably

:16:24. > :16:28.well on this first leg, and hopefully Hannah Miley down in a

:16:28. > :16:35.lane seven doesn't lose too much on this leg. This is by far her

:16:35. > :16:41.weakest leg, and then she starts coming back. Yes, Hannah does leave

:16:41. > :16:49.a lot for the breaststroke leg. She won't impact Stephanie Rice on the

:16:49. > :16:55.backstroke. Beisel has got a fantastic backstroke. This morning

:16:55. > :17:05.she stormed through the field on the back straight. - Mark --

:17:05. > :17:11.

:17:11. > :17:21.backstroke. Belmonte Garcia has been leading in this. Hannah is not

:17:21. > :17:26.

:17:26. > :17:30.not been fit. Just two from the bottom there again, Hannah Miley.

:17:30. > :17:35.She is in seventh position at the moment that she has a cracking

:17:35. > :17:42.restaurant. This is not a bad position for her at all. If she is

:17:42. > :17:49.going to win the Olympics she is going to have to improve her but of

:17:49. > :17:55.like a bit but she is looking good at the moment. I think Stephanie

:17:55. > :18:00.Rice is having a great swim. This is more than -- more of a lead than

:18:00. > :18:09.I thought she would have. I am not sure if her fitness can take her

:18:09. > :18:19.through this race. Leverenz having a bit of a shocker. So rise over

:18:19. > :18:19.

:18:19. > :18:25.first at the halfway stage. Biesel second. Hannah Miley needs to start

:18:25. > :18:33.moving. She is just one lane closer to us than that silver hat at the

:18:33. > :18:42.bottom of the Czech swimmer. She is about two metres behind her. Coming

:18:42. > :18:50.back but the rest of the field is coming back, too. She is hunting

:18:51. > :18:57.for the bronze medal. The Czech swimmer or won her heat this

:18:58. > :19:03.morning. Biesel's breaststroke is pretty ropey but it is effective.

:19:04. > :19:10.This is better than this morning. I think Stephanie Rice's energy is

:19:10. > :19:15.going. The silver medal could still be up for grabs. Biesel is in a

:19:15. > :19:19.good position. Miley coming through into third place. You see a black

:19:19. > :19:24.hat there and I think Stephanie Rice is there for the taking.

:19:24. > :19:30.is very exciting indeed. Biesel in the centre for the USA but it looks

:19:30. > :19:37.like Hannah Miley may even turn second here. She is in third. On

:19:37. > :19:41.the right hand side here. Now the rest of the field will start coming

:19:41. > :19:45.in and can Hannah Miley is to make a decent but the plight? Backstroke

:19:45. > :19:52.OK and a really good breaststroke but the rest of the field is

:19:52. > :19:57.starting to come back fast. cannot see here but the Chinese

:19:57. > :20:07.swimmer has a great freestyle. In a lane five, Belmont he is not going

:20:07. > :20:08.

:20:08. > :20:14.to give it up too easily. This is looking ominous. You cannot quite

:20:14. > :20:18.see it but the 15-year-old Chinese swimmer is coming back. But still

:20:18. > :20:28.very good from Hannah Miley and she could well get a medal. It will be

:20:28. > :20:30.

:20:30. > :20:36.very tight. Biesel will get the gold. It is a silver for Hannah

:20:36. > :20:45.Miley! Well done. My goodness, what a fantastic last 200 metres that

:20:45. > :20:53.was, there, from Hannah Miley! Good swimming because she was a way back,

:20:53. > :20:58.eighth after the flies. I think Stefanie rise to just got in and

:20:58. > :21:05.emptied The Tank completely and Hannah Miley was going through the

:21:05. > :21:11.wall, which is how you should always finish a race. A good swim

:21:11. > :21:16.from Biesel who won the race. Stephanie Rice blew all her energy.

:21:16. > :21:23.She has not been training that well. Struggled in training. But a

:21:23. > :21:26.fantastic swimmer from Hannah Miley. We cannot see her on this shot.

:21:26. > :21:33.They are obviously concentrating on the world champion, Elizabeth

:21:33. > :21:41.Biesel. Hannah Miley could will her best into the breaststroke and back

:21:41. > :21:50.strain. -- Hannah Miley put her best into the breaststroke and

:21:50. > :21:56.backstroke. Biesel nailed the gold medal. Delighted. It is a long race,

:21:56. > :22:01.the 400m medley. Switching all the strokes. Hannah Miley paced that

:22:02. > :22:09.really well, Andy. What do you think? I think it is quite

:22:09. > :22:18.extraordinary, to be honest. Biesel's team-mates might win the

:22:18. > :22:26.400m men's medley tonight. Coming back to Hannah, if only she could

:22:26. > :22:30.get that flyer writer. She is so good at the rest of it! 400m

:22:30. > :22:40.women's medley, Elizabeth Biesel from the USA. A really good silver

:22:40. > :22:42.

:22:42. > :22:48.Hannah is having some galactic have done, which is important because it

:22:48. > :22:51.is all about getting the best performance next year. The European

:22:51. > :22:55.Championships went awesome and then a couple of Games felt tough but I

:22:55. > :23:02.was really glad to get a medal, but this is the next closest thing to

:23:02. > :23:08.the Olympics, so to get a medal in this...! You deserved it, 11

:23:08. > :23:14.hundredths as well. Poor old Stephanie Rice but well done you!

:23:14. > :23:19.thought, I have to get a medal, even if it is a bronze. I could see

:23:19. > :23:27.the two Chinese girls coming. My little legs could not keep any

:23:27. > :23:32.more! It was a really good. 0.1! But my little arms are long enough.

:23:32. > :23:37.I watched your warm-up with your father. A very meticulous. You have

:23:37. > :23:44.a great relationship. You are as, as anything. I know he knows what

:23:44. > :23:52.he's talking about so I fully trust him. And just backed family bond

:23:52. > :23:57.runs the -- deep between us. When he has the time to coach, because

:23:57. > :24:01.half the time he is flying helicopters, so it is a fantastic

:24:01. > :24:05.we can produce these results. It shows sometimes it is not about the

:24:05. > :24:13.best facilities but the coaching. Also hard work. I have never known

:24:13. > :24:22.anyone work as hard as you. You judge -- you do put the hard work

:24:22. > :24:29.and Arras in. Yes. I am very CLARE BALDING Isn't she just lovely,

:24:29. > :24:34.Smiley Miley, Hannah Miley? She gets the M glamourous into the

:24:34. > :24:40.because of the Test and being don't on her ear. When you watch that

:24:40. > :24:46.feature earlier, you are thinking, a plumber -- oh, please, with a

:24:46. > :24:52.medal this time. And she has a silver medal and she has beaten the

:24:52. > :25:01.Australian Stephanie Rice, who was walking behind, saying one one-

:25:02. > :25:07.hundredth. Yes, Miley's fly is not a very strong. Biesel's fly is not

:25:07. > :25:11.very strong either. You have always got a weakness to work on. But like

:25:11. > :25:16.Hannah says, she does not want to work too much on her flight. That

:25:16. > :25:22.is the balance to get right. Do you consolidate on what you are good at

:25:22. > :25:26.all really work on your weaknesses? You do not want to miss any one of

:25:26. > :25:30.them but if you spend a little bit more time on the butterfly and make

:25:30. > :25:38.a big improvement, and try not to lose too much on the breaststroke

:25:38. > :25:44.as well. She is not a big girl. It is not a cows -- case of pounding

:25:44. > :25:49.more weights in the gym. In the water at you think and swimmers

:25:50. > :25:55.have a good core but they actually float in the water. She does rock-

:25:55. > :26:00.climbing. I love the relationship between here -- her and her father,

:26:00. > :26:08.Patrick. I trained with him in Beijing. I found them such a

:26:08. > :26:13.calming influence to be behind. Hannah was always smiling. Palming

:26:13. > :26:18.-- Patrick was that calming influence around the pool. Just

:26:18. > :26:28.explain to me, that was the British doctor coming in to take blood from

:26:28. > :26:31.

:26:31. > :26:36.her ear. It is to test -- to test what you produce went Huke swim.

:26:36. > :26:42.Short distance swimmers previews it and are able to push it and very

:26:42. > :26:46.quickly. It went up and as she stopped swimming they wanted to see

:26:46. > :26:52.how it slowly it was going back down. So the best thing is too not

:26:52. > :26:58.produce very much? Sprinters produce a lot and longer distance

:26:58. > :27:01.swimmers produce smaller amounts... Becky Adlington, when she swims,

:27:01. > :27:11.reduces and flushes at the same time. That is what she does long-

:27:11. > :27:12.

:27:12. > :27:16.distance. Sprinters produce a lot very quickly. You learn so much.

:27:16. > :27:25.That feature beforehand was made for us by our Olympic dreams team.

:27:25. > :27:29.We are very grateful to them for Next Saturday at 1pm on BBC One,

:27:30. > :27:34.there will be a follow-up with Hannah and her father and exclusive

:27:34. > :27:38.access to Jessica Ennis and her team and the triathlon athletes

:27:39. > :27:43.ahead of London Olympics. The title of some of the year is pretty much

:27:43. > :27:49.sewn up for the second year running. You would have to put Your Money on

:27:49. > :27:52.Ryan Lochte. He has been phenomenal. Four gold medals so far in this

:27:52. > :27:57.Championships and he has beaten Michael Phelps into second place in

:27:57. > :28:07.two of them. To round of the week he had the 400m individual medley.

:28:07. > :28:26.

:28:26. > :28:30.And also in this race for Britain in the centre. My goodness.

:28:30. > :28:34.Unfortunately, you cannot really see with these pictures we are

:28:34. > :28:44.getting from Chinese television because look at that, that is 30

:28:44. > :28:44.

:28:44. > :28:54.metres on a 400m medley. swimmer in a lane Fife was in the

:28:54. > :29:07.

:29:07. > :29:12.same heat as Lochte. The two people dominate this. It is a great

:29:12. > :29:22.procession. It will become his fifth gold medals. What a great way

:29:22. > :29:32.

:29:32. > :29:38.awesome. He wriggles down the straight a little bit. Look at his

:29:38. > :29:47.hips. When you have a stronger leg kick, it makes it keeps a little

:29:47. > :29:52.bit more stable. When you are moving one arm contrary to the

:29:52. > :30:02.other arm, it will leave the hips out. When you have a very strong

:30:02. > :30:04.

:30:04. > :30:08.kick, it just keeps your balance. So there is the world record line

:30:08. > :30:13.and that is Michael Phelps' world record pace in. Phelps was not

:30:13. > :30:21.quite so good on the breaststroke so Lochte, I think, will start

:30:21. > :30:29.working it fairly sure it. Look at this, the halfway stage of the

:30:29. > :30:33.men's 400m medley. Ryan Lochte, apart from his team-mate, is about

:30:33. > :30:38.40 metres a head of the rest of the world. It is interesting cleric

:30:38. > :30:46.staying close to him. I think the breaststroke might sort him out. --

:30:46. > :30:51.it is interesting Clary staying close to him. Lochte has a strong

:30:51. > :30:56.the restaurant and Clary. A bit stronger than Michael Phelps, not a

:30:56. > :31:04.lot but I had always thought Lochte was quite strong on the

:31:04. > :31:08.breaststroke. He has a fantastic freestyle comeback. Phelps was very

:31:08. > :31:15.good indeed when he set that world record in the freestyle. It looks

:31:15. > :31:18.like Ryan Lochte is winding it up. Great Britain's Roberto Pavoni,

:31:18. > :31:23.seventh after the flight, eighth after the backstroke. He is going

:31:23. > :31:33.again. The pictures will not show him at the moment. It is all about

:31:33. > :31:48.

:31:48. > :31:56.Ryan Lochte or of the USA in the three or four seconds ahead of the

:31:56. > :32:03.rest of them. Look at his legs! He is really quick down the second 50

:32:03. > :32:08.metres of the 100m. He is getting further away from the world record.

:32:08. > :32:12.Great discipline under water, though. Fantastic discipline when

:32:12. > :32:17.he is so tired. Look at the dominance he is showing to the rest

:32:17. > :32:25.of the world. What a great victory celebration he will have. Sir Ryan

:32:25. > :32:30.Lochte of the USA is going to take the gold medal in the 400m medley.

:32:30. > :32:39.That is 12 gold medals in total from the World Championships for

:32:39. > :32:47.Ryan Lochte. Silver to Garrett for the USA and the bronze medal for

:32:47. > :32:52.Horihata or of Japan. This chap actually E -- absolutely wonderful.

:32:52. > :33:02.And at 26 years of age he's getting faster and faster. Lochte has put

:33:02. > :33:14.

:33:14. > :33:18.the yards in, put the training in, born and brought up there.

:33:18. > :33:28.team-mate Elizabeth Beisel is in the final of the women's 400-metre

:33:28. > :33:51.

:33:51. > :33:56.medley. What a team that would be! the 5th time here in Shanghai. This

:33:56. > :34:02.time, the men's 400m individual medley. A very tough programme he

:34:02. > :34:06.medley. A very tough programme he has had, but a brilliant swimming.

:34:06. > :34:10.Well done. It has been a long before you, hasn't it? Yes, I was

:34:10. > :34:13.waiting around for my chance to have a race. I was pleased to get

:34:14. > :34:19.into the final this morning. I am not so pleased with that. I felt

:34:19. > :34:24.really tired going into it. I was hoping for a lot better. But taking

:34:24. > :34:28.depositors out of the meet, this is my first World Championships, so I

:34:28. > :34:32.can't be too upset. There were a few people expected to make that

:34:32. > :34:37.final who were shocked this one. Yes, but it has been so close all

:34:37. > :34:43.week. It has been fingernails on the touch. I shaved my head

:34:43. > :34:46.yesterday thank God I did because I made it by 0.05. Just to be in

:34:46. > :34:49.there was a real positive for me. I'm looking forward to next year.

:34:49. > :34:53.Thank you. I suppose it really is a very

:34:54. > :34:59.different experience, being in your first to final at a major

:34:59. > :35:03.competition. Yes, being there with Ryan Lochte, his role model, that

:35:03. > :35:08.is the person he aims to be, in a sense. Going through those nations.

:35:08. > :35:13.He had a heart heat this morning. His best time actually would have

:35:13. > :35:17.put him in 4th place. There are lots of positive to take away from

:35:17. > :35:22.it. It is one of those things, at the end of a long week, he has

:35:22. > :35:26.waited eight days for that moment, it can sometimes get tiring. Just

:35:26. > :35:29.sum up the performance of Ryan Lochte this week, for people who

:35:29. > :35:34.may be our only tuning in for the first time today. Just how good is

:35:34. > :35:41.this guy and how much of him will we see in London? The guide is

:35:41. > :35:45.phenomenal. Not just a fact he has won five gold medals. He is a

:35:45. > :35:49.second Michael Phelps, in a sense. And to beat Michael Phelps on two

:35:49. > :35:54.events, he has been dominating. And having those two from America. It

:35:54. > :35:59.makes swimming exciting. Bringing in a few other people. We won some

:35:59. > :36:03.exciting races. When you see the footage, you see how to swim, how

:36:03. > :36:07.the best in the world do it. He is at his peak at the moment. It has

:36:07. > :36:10.been a privilege to watch him. But it has been a frustrating year for

:36:10. > :36:12.Fran Halsall. The British swimmer has only had four months of

:36:13. > :36:16.training after an ankle operation just before Christmas, and it has

:36:16. > :36:21.been a bit of a nearly week for her. She was 4th in the 400-metre

:36:21. > :36:31.freestyle. Now she lines up in the final of the 50m freestyle. So, one

:36:31. > :36:48.

:36:48. > :36:58.length of the poor. -- Cole. -- very fast start indeed. A good

:36:58. > :37:09.

:37:09. > :37:14.Very good! Very, very good. Well done. The Swedish crowd have jumped

:37:14. > :37:24.up and shouted for joy. And so they should. Finally, she has won the

:37:24. > :37:28.

:37:28. > :37:36.one! Finally! Alshammar wins that. Kromowidjojo gets silver and

:37:36. > :37:40.Veldhuis get bronze. Francesca Halsall came in 4th. There is one

:37:40. > :37:50.excited lady. She got it from the start. A great start, kept her head

:37:50. > :37:50.

:37:50. > :38:00.down. I'm not sure she breathed at all during that race. It was a good

:38:00. > :38:07.

:38:07. > :38:11.victory. Fran Halsall just a little seven times at the World

:38:11. > :38:16.Championships. She has got one gold, five silvers and one bronze. Now it

:38:16. > :38:23.is too cold. To raise as a mark, while champion in the women's 50m

:38:23. > :38:27.while champion in the women's 50m freestyle. -- to raise Alshammar. I

:38:27. > :38:30.know you're not happy with 4th place, but there are always good

:38:30. > :38:34.lessons to learn. I am really happy with that actually. I can't

:38:34. > :38:38.complain. Normally you are not happy with anything unless it is a

:38:38. > :38:45.medal. Usually I'm not but I didn't expect a medal coming into this

:38:45. > :38:51.meet, so getting a 4th on the 50m is a big surprise. I came in 9th,

:38:51. > :38:57.so it's a pretty good step up, I think. What are you going to do for

:38:57. > :39:04.next year? It is a building block. I put my name in the hat for both.

:39:04. > :39:07.Now I can get a good train -- Cheney ever Christmas, it will make

:39:07. > :39:11.a big difference. I'm sure you're not going to give this up easily.

:39:11. > :39:16.No, I broke my British record is still there, and no one has gone

:39:16. > :39:20.faster than me in that, so I will come back on that next year. I will

:39:20. > :39:24.have wanted to perform a 100m freestyle to relax me a bit texted.

:39:24. > :39:28.Do you think the British crowd shouting and screaming will help?

:39:28. > :39:32.Definitely. We have had a lot of close calls this meet. Quite a few

:39:32. > :39:38.of us have just been outside the medals. If we can convert next year

:39:38. > :39:42.will stop many congratulations. looked extremely happy. Yes, I am

:39:42. > :39:46.over the moon. I managed Diss and a whole race without thinking about

:39:46. > :39:51.the end result, which is hard when you are racing for medals. I tried

:39:51. > :39:55.to focus and my start was better tonight. I couldn't be happier,

:39:55. > :39:59.expressly after missing the gold yesterday. The start was great, but

:39:59. > :40:02.the finish was really good this time. Yes, it was. That is the

:40:02. > :40:08.important thing. You have just got to get back up there again. Luckily

:40:08. > :40:14.I had the chance. I was over the moon. Just so happy. This should

:40:14. > :40:18.give you great confidence going into next year. Will this be your

:40:18. > :40:22.swansong, or will we wait and see? I don't know, I made my personal

:40:22. > :40:26.best today. There is motivation and joy in the sport. See you this time

:40:26. > :40:31.next year. Thank you. It is so much more fun when you are

:40:31. > :40:35.winning. I know you are thrilled with that. Yes, we were training

:40:35. > :40:40.friends for ages. We went to Germany together and she won a

:40:40. > :40:44.silver medal in the Sydney Olympics in 2000. She is nearly 34 years of

:40:44. > :40:51.age. The fact that we trained together, she is still improving.

:40:51. > :41:01.That is one of her best times. Like Fran Halsall said, her best time in

:41:01. > :41:02.

:41:02. > :41:06.a texted. She had the opportunity today to put it right.

:41:06. > :41:16.In terms of Fran Halsall, potentially she has got another 12

:41:16. > :41:19.

:41:19. > :41:25.years at this if out to mark his 34. Yes, one swimmer won a gold medal

:41:25. > :41:31.at the age of 41. That is extraordinary. You just told me

:41:31. > :41:35.that you can break your fingers when you finish. Yes, very much so.

:41:35. > :41:40.When you try to spot the finish, when your arm is coming over, what

:41:40. > :41:45.you see a lot of people during his finishing like this. The difference

:41:45. > :41:53.between this and this is a hand length. You want to jab the ball

:41:53. > :41:57.with your fingers. -- the wall. When you finish with a pointed hand,

:41:57. > :42:07.you can bruise your hands. perfect freestyle technique looks

:42:07. > :42:07.

:42:07. > :42:13.like what? OK, a masterclass! What a lot of people don't think is you

:42:13. > :42:18.do this. What you actually do is when this arm comes back, your hips

:42:19. > :42:24.go. Your arms come in at the top and then the kids go. York power

:42:24. > :42:31.comes from your hips. He will sit on the 1,500. You will see the body

:42:31. > :42:41.shape changed. That is where all the power comes from stock --.. It

:42:41. > :42:42.

:42:42. > :42:46.is the same with golf and dancing. Now, there are world records and

:42:46. > :42:49.then there are world records that are just so special, and everyone

:42:49. > :42:57.in the swimming world has huge respect for the oldest world record

:42:57. > :43:00.of the lot, which is Grant Hackett's 1500m. It was said way

:43:01. > :43:07.back in 2001, and no one has been able to touch it, even through that

:43:07. > :43:12.period of high tech suits. But, could be Chinese crowd lift their

:43:12. > :43:22.man some young to break it? We join him with a two lengths to go. --

:43:22. > :43:31.

:43:31. > :43:37.Kis of hungry is really motoring. The crowd are really hoping he can

:43:37. > :43:41.wind up down this last few metres. A fantastic swim. He has broken the

:43:41. > :43:51.field from the very beginning. He is the man of the moment. Sun Yang

:43:51. > :43:52.

:43:52. > :43:58.will be there in London. You will be seeing this again. He may well

:43:58. > :44:06.still get it. He looks absolutely brilliant. Oh, he has got the world

:44:06. > :44:12.record! Unbelievable! Oh, my goodness! That is just incredible.

:44:12. > :44:19.I can't believe he came back so fast. He must have come back in a

:44:19. > :44:24.54! 54.1. My goodness! Why did he leave so much best -- left? He

:44:24. > :44:28.could go so much faster than. Sun Yang of China has just broken the

:44:28. > :44:31.oldest world record in the book. It was held by Grant Hackett of

:44:31. > :44:38.Australia set more than 12 years ago. I just can't believe what I

:44:38. > :44:41.have seen. Astonishing. Well, Grant Hackett knew that this world record

:44:41. > :44:47.would go at some point, but I bet even he didn't think it would be

:44:47. > :44:52.broken quite like this. Sun Yang made up two seconds, it was like he

:44:52. > :44:55.pressed a button. Then the outboard motor came on. It is this whole

:44:55. > :44:59.pacing thing. He goes out quite slowly and then just turns it on

:45:00. > :45:07.and brings it back at the end. That last 50m, just to put it into

:45:07. > :45:15.context, 25.9 seconds for that last 50m. A good 100 freestyler comes

:45:15. > :45:21.back in 25 point zero seconds. That back in 25 point zero seconds. That

:45:21. > :45:24.is phenomenal. Amazing. We love these World Championships

:45:24. > :45:28.for these brilliant performances. I particularly loved to see a home

:45:29. > :45:32.nation having something to roar about. And my word, they did there.

:45:32. > :45:42.We have talked about home advantage in London for us, and you have seen

:45:42. > :45:43.

:45:43. > :45:47.it with the Chinese team over here. This time, they have won 14 of 15

:45:47. > :45:51.medals, twice what they won three years ago in the Olympics. There

:45:51. > :45:56.are a few people who will be stars of next year, people to look out

:45:56. > :46:01.for. Sun Yang will be going in the 15, before and possibly the two as

:46:01. > :46:04.well. He will be another one to throw into the mix with in thought

:46:04. > :46:07.and Michael Phelps. He has made an awful lot of difference for this.

:46:07. > :46:13.Talking about Michael Phelps, the final race of this world swimming

:46:13. > :46:17.championships, and the final race in his extraordinary career was the

:46:17. > :46:23.4x100 medley relay. Michael Phelps said this will be his last World

:46:23. > :46:33.Championships. He was on the butterfly leg in leg three. Great

:46:33. > :46:47.

:46:47. > :46:57.World Championships. So 100m backstroke, bent breaststroke, then

:46:57. > :47:00.

:47:00. > :47:03.fly, then freestyle. In lane number five is the German. He goes off

:47:03. > :47:11.quickly always and do has not managed to bring it back

:47:11. > :47:17.particularly fast. Liam Tancock is second to turn. We will see how

:47:17. > :47:27.much he has got left because it think the medal ceremony has taken

:47:27. > :47:41.

:47:41. > :47:45.it out of him. I cannot imagine now fantastic breaststroke in him. If

:47:45. > :47:53.he can get this in 58 seconds or something like that, this will be a

:47:53. > :47:58.great need for the Japanese. Look at this, Germany. Fascinating. I

:47:58. > :48:08.thought America would be further ahead but they are now nearly two

:48:08. > :48:18.metres behind. Japan go in first. Their summer has gone off like an

:48:18. > :48:28.absolute rocket. -- swimmer. He is in lane six. Very quick indeed. And

:48:28. > :48:29.

:48:29. > :48:39.the Americans struggling. Phelps there. The Japanese Soarer was

:48:39. > :48:45.struggling a little bit there. -- swimmer. Japan, a real surprise is,

:48:45. > :48:52.in first place. Germany next to. America only in fourth. Britain in

:48:52. > :48:58.sixth. Going well. Michael Phelps in the black hat in the centre now.

:48:58. > :49:04.He has a huge amount of work to do to give America a medal here. Japan

:49:04. > :49:14.1, Germany two, Australia are still three. Australia have James

:49:14. > :49:27.

:49:27. > :49:37.Magnussen on the back end, the 100m swim there. A very tight takeover

:49:37. > :49:44.for the Japanese. Look at Nathan Adrian go. I am not sure if mad

:49:44. > :49:54.descent can get a second and Adrian here. -- if Magnussen can get a

:49:54. > :49:57.

:49:57. > :50:03.second on Adrian here. Magnussen is having a go. Adrian has absolutely

:50:03. > :50:07.blown off. He is going to tire a little bit. Australia have only got

:50:07. > :50:16.two medals so far and he has been part of both of them. He is coming

:50:16. > :50:21.very fast. Nathan Adrian has got it. How close was that? He gets the

:50:21. > :50:24.gold medal for the USA and finishes Michael Phelps' World Championship

:50:24. > :50:29.career in wonderful style but heavens above, that was so close

:50:29. > :50:34.that title for a second there that team Australia was going to get it.

:50:34. > :50:40.The gold medal to the USA, silver to Australia, Germany get the

:50:40. > :50:50.bronze and Britain did really well to get sixth. My Maghaberry Prison

:50:50. > :50:52.

:50:52. > :51:02.did 47 at flat. -- Magnussen did 47 flat. Phelps on the left-hand side

:51:02. > :51:07.

:51:07. > :51:17.shaking everybody's and as he well might. The greatest swimmer in

:51:17. > :51:21.

:51:21. > :51:28.history and he has now got 33 World Championship medals. 33. But for a

:51:28. > :51:34.long, long time, you have to say, not mucking about but nowhere near

:51:34. > :51:39.where I expected them to be. the Japanese had a great start.

:51:39. > :51:49.They did not have the freestyle. This is coming up to the end of the

:51:49. > :51:58.flight. Phelps gave Adrian what we thought was a chance but in the end

:51:59. > :52:05.that the great swim for him was over-stroked by Magnussen. It is

:52:05. > :52:11.always a team effort. Team USA winning the gold medal. The men's

:52:11. > :52:16.4X100m medley relay. And in doing so, more history made. Michael

:52:16. > :52:26.Phelps finishing with four gold medals, two silver medals and one

:52:26. > :52:27.

:52:27. > :52:33.good swim for them. CLARE BALDING So Michael Phelps

:52:33. > :52:37.with his team-mates stepping up on to that podium for the last time at

:52:37. > :52:43.a World Championships. A great career. The greatest swimmer the

:52:43. > :52:47.world has ever known. 33 medals in total for him. The Olympics next

:52:47. > :52:56.year will be his final event. And his coach has been talking to

:52:56. > :53:01.Brilliant to see you. A different target next year than you did for

:53:01. > :53:06.Beijing? A bit different. It will be a different experience. What

:53:06. > :53:11.sort of things have been learnt here? It is extremely tough to stay

:53:11. > :53:16.at the top. Exactly. What we have learned here is that Michael is

:53:16. > :53:19.still competitive and he is still at or near the top so we are

:53:19. > :53:23.pleased with where he is and we have plenty of time to get him

:53:23. > :53:28.ready for next year. Is it good for Michael and for swimming that it

:53:28. > :53:35.becomes more competitive now? Bryant brings at the best in

:53:35. > :53:39.Michael and vice versa. Competition is always a good thing. -- Brian.

:53:39. > :53:46.What will the competition be? will tell you soon.

:53:46. > :53:50.When will the tellers? The American trials are the latest. They have

:53:50. > :53:54.there's a month before the Olympics, June or July next year. You have

:53:54. > :53:57.been on the phone this morning to the one person who is missing from

:53:57. > :54:00.the jigsaw out there in Shanghai but will be back for London, Ian

:54:01. > :54:05.Thorpe. He is training in Switzerland. What was his reaction

:54:05. > :54:13.to what has been going on? He loved to the racing and the

:54:13. > :54:17.competitiveness. That was probably aimed at the Lochte race and the

:54:17. > :54:20.200m. How he is going to fit back into the relay team. It is a

:54:20. > :54:24.challenge. He is down their training at the moment so while

:54:24. > :54:31.everyone is at the World Championships, he is in Switzerland,

:54:31. > :54:39.training as hard as he can. He is not taking this lightly. Add 15

:54:39. > :54:47.years of age he was the world champion, then retired at 21 and

:54:47. > :54:51.back at 28. He will make the team stronger. Is he happy with his

:54:51. > :54:57.weight loss? He is shedding a lot of pounds. He has not competed

:54:57. > :55:02.internationally for a lot of time. He is trained as hard as he can. He

:55:02. > :55:09.is training with Aleksandr Popov's X coach. We will see what he comes

:55:09. > :55:14.out with technically. He was always doing lots of 100m and now he is

:55:14. > :55:18.doing a lot more sprint work which we have not seen before. He always

:55:18. > :55:24.wanted to be a sprinter and not a middle distance swimmer. It is just

:55:24. > :55:26.going to be so excited to see him come back! Team to be have done is

:55:26. > :55:29.this World Championships with three gold medals, three silvers and

:55:29. > :55:33.probably three or more swimmers thinking they could have done

:55:33. > :55:36.better. Let's hear the reaction of the national performance director,

:55:36. > :55:41.Michael Scott. Congratulations to you and your

:55:41. > :55:45.team. A week of highs and lows but at the end we finished off very

:55:45. > :55:50.strong and our strength as a team really came to the 4th. Irish unity

:55:50. > :55:55.and helping us through the days of not so good performance. -- our

:55:55. > :56:03.unity. We finished very strongly. Three gold medals and three silver

:56:03. > :56:07.medals. Can we match that next year or meet the -- maybe do better?

:56:08. > :56:12.had three fourth places that were 2.7 seconds away from the podium.

:56:12. > :56:18.Our focus now is clear. The results of swimming have now become global

:56:18. > :56:23.and it is a game of inches. We have to convert that going forward. Our

:56:23. > :56:28.focus will be on those inches, and making sure we can but next year.

:56:28. > :56:31.There were a lot of races won by hundredths of a second and

:56:32. > :56:36.sometimes swimmers need to be reminded that every little

:56:36. > :56:40.technique makes a difference? It is global and it is the World

:56:40. > :56:46.Championships. We respect the opposition. All countries had their

:56:46. > :56:52.highs and lows. What encourages us as a team is the depth of our

:56:52. > :56:56.performances. FINA have a championship trophy. We finished

:56:56. > :57:01.fourth on that, behind the USA, Australia and China. Top European

:57:01. > :57:06.country. That is all positive for next year. We have a lot of

:57:06. > :57:16.momentum going forward but we do do -- have to do the little things

:57:16. > :57:22.

:57:22. > :57:30.table. 29 medals in total for the USA. China in second, Brazil had a

:57:30. > :57:37.very good meet, Australia Pradeep poor by their standards. And Great

:57:37. > :57:47.Britain there, not on there is carried -- Keri-Anne Payne's medal

:57:47. > :57:47.

:57:47. > :57:51.from the open water, because these Mark, how would you rate that as a

:57:51. > :57:57.performance? Like Michael said, they have done really well. There

:57:57. > :58:04.are a lot of people we would expect to perform. Gemma Spofforth went in,

:58:04. > :58:09.we knew she was demotivated, she had not had the best year. Frant

:58:09. > :58:16.back in force. That could be turned into podiums. Lizzie Simmonds could

:58:16. > :58:19.do better. Yes, James Goddard came fourth as well. There are a lot of

:58:19. > :58:25.positives. There are a few things where we say, we could have done

:58:25. > :58:29.better. That comes at every Championships. With a team of 40

:58:29. > :58:35.people, the idea of getting all 45 in that the same time does not

:58:35. > :58:41.happen. You have one or two that are off. Pavoni, six seconds off

:58:41. > :58:45.his best. You have to welcome the positive side. And one of the big

:58:45. > :58:51.areas that we have heard they have specific investments to work on his

:58:51. > :58:58.the turns. Quite why that should be expensive to work on, I do not

:58:58. > :59:02.know! Loughborough is where baby -- British swimming is based and there

:59:02. > :59:07.they have a tracking system with a camera. Someone will move the

:59:07. > :59:11.camera along and get the underwater at shots. They will get your

:59:11. > :59:16.technique under water, video at the turns and the starts. They just

:59:16. > :59:25.need to work on it an awful lot more. And they can have a look at

:59:25. > :59:30.the slow motions of the man of the meet, Lochte. The positive things

:59:30. > :59:37.is, like Becky says, there are still the buildings she can put

:59:37. > :59:44.of years ago at the World Championships, we had 15, forget

:59:44. > :59:49.the medals, 15 finalists. This time we had 22 finalist. That is a 50%

:59:49. > :59:53.improvement on a couple of years ago. People making the top eight

:59:53. > :59:59.and Beijing finals. They have a chance of picking something up.

:59:59. > :00:02.six of the women were in two finals that our Olympic events. Thanks to

:00:02. > :00:08.Mark for his impact of -- input this week and his demonstrations,

:00:08. > :00:14.which ANA were popular. Thank you to our team in Shanghai. I do hope

:00:14. > :00:24.you have enjoyed it. Roll on 2012. Athletics coverage is coming up

:00:24. > :00:30.

:00:30. > :00:38.next on BBC Two. From all of us, Tancock! World champion again.

:00:38. > :00:43.is going to be Franklin... A gold medal... Keri-anne Payne but it is

:00:43. > :00:50.first and takes the gold medal. World champion... This is Michael
