:00:28. > :00:37.Some cities just brief history. Some cities are iconic. Some cities

:00:38. > :00:38.

:00:38. > :00:48.can stir the memory. It is Linford Christie, and the British captain

:00:48. > :00:50.

:00:50. > :00:57.is the Olympic champion! Sally Gunnell gets the gold. He has won

:00:57. > :01:07.nothing but admiration. Some cities can inspire. That is utterly

:01:07. > :01:07.

:01:07. > :01:17.brilliant. But this is not just any city, this is Barcelona. Welcome to

:01:17. > :01:53.

:01:53. > :01:56.A very warm welcome to Barcelona for the 2013 world swimming

:01:56. > :02:02.championships and with eight on our poolside perch are Mark Foster and

:02:02. > :02:07.a new to us, but not new to this environment, Rebecca Adlington. The

:02:07. > :02:17.world's greatest swimmers are assembled in Barcelona this week.

:02:17. > :02:42.

:02:42. > :02:49.If you need a reminder of who they He is absolutely brilliant. She is

:02:49. > :02:59.going to win a gold medal in the women's 800 metres freestyle. The

:02:59. > :03:00.

:03:00. > :03:08.individual medley. What a beautiful boy! We are going to start by

:03:08. > :03:14.showing you one of those big names in action, and the American

:03:14. > :03:24.teenager Katie Ledecky burst into the limelight. It is the women's

:03:24. > :03:37.

:03:37. > :03:47.400 metres freestyle from last the heats. The final of the women's

:03:47. > :03:48.

:03:48. > :03:51.400 metres freestyle. Katie Ledecky was the fastest qualifier. Jazmin

:03:51. > :04:01.Carlin of Great Britain is the Welsh record holder and expect her

:04:01. > :04:02.

:04:02. > :04:09.to go out nice and comfortably in lane three. What have you got to

:04:09. > :04:14.do? You have got to keep its move, it has got to be easy speed. The

:04:14. > :04:19.first 50 does not feel that hard. You do not want to burn out, so

:04:20. > :04:24.they want to keep it nice and smooth and set the race up. Katie

:04:24. > :04:34.Ledecky is bowing out in a not dissimilar fashion that she went

:04:34. > :04:34.

:04:34. > :04:38.out in the 800 metres final in London. Jazmin Carlin is in 7th or

:04:38. > :04:45.8th position, but she has a good second half. She does not want to

:04:45. > :04:51.get too far behind. No, she does not, but she does swim well in the

:04:51. > :05:00.second 200 metres. Expect her to dig in. Her coach calls her a rock

:05:00. > :05:05.Fila. Is that fair, Becky? definitely not. She goes for it.

:05:05. > :05:12.She definitely does. But Katie Ledecky is not just going for it,

:05:12. > :05:16.she is storming it. She looks as if she is on course for a record.

:05:16. > :05:23.think she will come back as well. She trains for the distance, I do

:05:23. > :05:28.not think she is going to drop off and died. A possible world record.

:05:28. > :05:34.Jazmin Carlin is just at the top three down in the picture. She

:05:34. > :05:44.could get a bronze medal here. Katie Ledecky has gone off like a

:05:44. > :05:48.shot. She is underneath world record pace. Jazmin Carlin is in

:05:48. > :05:54.6th position and she is moving through the field and looking

:05:54. > :05:58.pretty good. Becky, what do you think at the moment? She is spent a

:05:58. > :06:03.good position. Obviously Katie is next to her and it is a bit is

:06:03. > :06:09.heartening to see where she is. But she has got a great position and

:06:09. > :06:19.hopefully she can bring it back. She has gone on to Kylie Palmer's

:06:19. > :06:19.

:06:19. > :06:24.shoulders. Katie Ledecky is going to smash this world record. It will

:06:24. > :06:32.be interesting if Jazmin Carlin can get close to the Spanish girl who

:06:32. > :06:38.is second at the moment. But the Hungarian is also there. Camille

:06:39. > :06:48.Muffat at the bottom has gone. metres to go and it is Katie

:06:49. > :06:49.

:06:49. > :06:53.Ledecky ahead of world record pace and she is looking very strong.

:06:53. > :06:58.Jazmin Carlin has moved up into 4th position now and this is the

:06:58. > :07:04.strongest part of her race. She has got to keep pushing Katie Ledecky.

:07:04. > :07:09.Do you think the world record is going to go? She is always strong

:07:09. > :07:16.on the last 50, but Jazmin Carlin has got a race on her hands up for

:07:16. > :07:22.the third position. She could do it. It is Lauren boil or Jazmin Carlin

:07:22. > :07:31.for the bronze medal. She is in the bronze-medal position. She is going

:07:32. > :07:41.to do it, I am so excited. world record is on. It is held by

:07:42. > :07:43.

:07:43. > :07:48.Federica Pellegrini of Italy. She is just outside. The bronze has

:07:48. > :07:58.just gone to New Zealand. Jazmin Carlin has been touched out by 141

:07:58. > :08:08.hundredths of a second. It is so close. That is a tough one. Katie

:08:08. > :08:11.

:08:11. > :08:19.Ledecky has broken for a menace. beautiful stroke and very high

:08:19. > :08:25.elbows. Becky, world Jazmin Carlin be happy with that? She swung so

:08:25. > :08:31.well and nearly got a medal. Or will she be disappointed? 4th is a

:08:31. > :08:41.horrible position. But she will see the positive. She will be upset,

:08:41. > :08:48.

:08:49. > :08:55.but I think she will realise it is a positive. It says Jazmin Carlin

:08:55. > :09:01.up for the freestyle still to come. You look very happy at. You went

:09:01. > :09:10.under four minutes without one of those suits. It is crazy. My coach

:09:10. > :09:13.sometimes jokes around when I am doing 29 and he says, under four

:09:14. > :09:23.minutes, and I always thought it was a joke, but he must have known

:09:24. > :09:24.

:09:24. > :09:29.it was in me. We will see you later She has got a tough programme here,

:09:29. > :09:36.but before we talk about her, your job in the commentary box needs a

:09:36. > :09:41.quick mention. How did you find that? I loved it, but it is amazing,

:09:41. > :09:45.but you are commenting on your best friends. Jazmin Carlin did a

:09:45. > :09:49.fantastic job and it sets her up for the rest of the week.

:09:49. > :09:54.Unfortunately, she has not qualified for the 1500 metres and

:09:54. > :09:58.she was hoping to get herself back in the water and up on the rostrum.

:09:58. > :10:03.But Katie Ledecky came under the radar abate in London and suddenly

:10:03. > :10:10.she has grown physically. She is here again and it was no one-hit

:10:10. > :10:15.wonder. You should talk to Becky about her beating her last year.

:10:15. > :10:20.When you are younger you make a huge improvements. It was a

:10:20. > :10:25.surprise as she won last year and in such fashion. But coming here in

:10:25. > :10:29.that 400 with nothing to lose, it was about her and the record.

:10:29. > :10:34.way you have known what it is like to win gold medals and everybody

:10:34. > :10:40.knows who you are until you are the goal to beat. She is also a target

:10:40. > :10:45.now four other girls. In the US team that you have had Michael

:10:45. > :10:50.Phelps and Ryan Lochte and Missy Franklin, so back home she will not

:10:50. > :10:56.be a huge star, but it spreads across the team with the US team.

:10:56. > :11:00.There are so many big names it spreads the pressure across. It was

:11:00. > :11:06.different in my position, but she is an unbelievable athlete. I am

:11:06. > :11:11.glad I do not have to re serve. has got a big programme, the 115

:11:11. > :11:17.hundred. It is tough going. It will be interesting to see how she gets

:11:17. > :11:23.on especially with the 800 after the 1500. I am so excited because

:11:23. > :11:28.there will be special things from here. Next up, it is the men's

:11:28. > :11:34.hundred metres breaststroke final. Sadly no Ross murder or Michael

:11:34. > :11:44.Jamieson in it. But Michael Churm isn't's strongest event is the 200

:11:44. > :11:58.

:11:58. > :12:02.medallists in the Olympic Games. is going out very strongly. The

:12:02. > :12:12.question is whether he has got the energy and the training to hold on

:12:12. > :12:13.

:12:13. > :12:16.to this place. Christian Sprenger is right where he needs to be.

:12:16. > :12:25.Cameron van der Burgh had to do this, the question is whether he

:12:25. > :12:31.can do this. He is taking Felipe Lima and Fabio Scozzoli with them.

:12:31. > :12:36.This is fascinating. Surely he cannot come back. He is holding

:12:36. > :12:42.well in that green cap for South Africa. Christian Sprenger is

:12:42. > :12:51.coming through. It is Christian Sprenger, the world champion, right

:12:51. > :12:57.on the touch. The bronze has gone to Felipe Lima of Brazil. A great

:12:57. > :13:01.swimmer from him. Look what it means, the world champion at the

:13:02. > :13:08.100 metres breaststroke. deserves that one, all year he has

:13:08. > :13:11.been half a second faster than the rest of the field. I think

:13:11. > :13:21.Christian Sprenger was saying it was Cameron van der Burgh's title

:13:21. > :13:27.

:13:28. > :13:32.to lose. He knew Cameron van der Burgh was going to go out quickly.

:13:32. > :13:37.Congratulations, you have had a great year. A fantastic way to top

:13:37. > :13:41.it off. I went into that raised thinking it was possible to get the

:13:41. > :13:47.world championship. But you do not want to get too overwhelmed by

:13:47. > :13:52.every possibility. I said to myself, whatever happens will happen. And I

:13:52. > :13:57.came away with a win will start you Australians have had a tough time

:13:57. > :14:01.over the last year, particularly the swimmers. Have you been able to

:14:01. > :14:06.handle that? Coming off London it was always going to be a challenge

:14:06. > :14:11.to bring ourselves back again. But we are really strong as a team and

:14:11. > :14:21.we can put up some pretty good times in these championships.

:14:21. > :14:21.

:14:21. > :14:29.Australia is back. Yes, we are back Said a swapped around from the

:14:29. > :14:32.Olympic Games in one and two. was AA huge jump for a Felipe Lima

:14:32. > :14:40.and that is where Brazil will be in four years time. I was not

:14:40. > :14:45.surprised. Cameron van der Burgh has sat a few problems and injuries

:14:46. > :14:51.this year, but it was a great race. He tried to take it out and break

:14:51. > :14:54.Christian Sprenger. It was disappointing at the Olympic Games

:14:54. > :15:00.across the sport for Australia and they will be delighted this early

:15:00. > :15:07.in the championships to get a gold medal. It is so important for them.

:15:07. > :15:17.It was similar for us with a disappointing Games last year. They

:15:17. > :15:24.

:15:24. > :15:28.can just sign it off and now night and missing out on the final,

:15:28. > :15:32.he knew he couldn't take any chances. Yes, some of the more

:15:32. > :15:39.established swimmers will take it a little bit easier. This evening, I

:15:39. > :15:45.hope he has a little bit more again. The race plan will be to make the

:15:45. > :15:50.top 16, and he came out first, so he is obviously on top form. Yannick

:15:50. > :15:55.Agnel is a bit of a mystery at the moment. He has relocated to America.

:15:55. > :16:00.He said he was only going to compete in relays. Is he still going to be

:16:00. > :16:06.the force in this race? It is difficult. He wasn't even meant to

:16:06. > :16:11.do the 200 until a few weeks ago. He did swim in the relay last night. He

:16:11. > :16:18.wasn't where you would expect him to be. I think he is going to surprise

:16:19. > :16:25.people with the fact he is not on top form. And this young Japanese

:16:25. > :16:28.swimmer in the first heat. We have seen a cutout of him on Japanese

:16:28. > :16:36.television around the corner. They are pitching him to be the next big

:16:37. > :16:46.thing. He has a big programme. doing lots of races. He could be the

:16:47. > :16:51.

:16:51. > :17:01.next Lochte. Maybe he will start 200 metres freestyle, Yannick Agnel

:17:01. > :17:04.

:17:04. > :17:11.of France. Up in lane and the three. -- lane number three. There is some

:17:11. > :17:19.big guys in this race. Conor Dwyer, who actually swims at North

:17:19. > :17:29.Baltimore with Michael Phelps' coach. The Japanese swimmer goes in

:17:29. > :17:36.

:17:36. > :17:40.Olympic champion, has gone out in three. Don't be surprised by the

:17:40. > :17:44.Japanese either. He comes back very quick. Agnel has had a bit of a

:17:44. > :17:49.turbulent time in the last year since the Olympic Games. He split

:17:49. > :17:52.with his coach without telling his coach. He told the French

:17:52. > :17:59.federation. Then he went over to America to have a meeting, and his

:17:59. > :18:09.coach thought he was just taking some time off. A bit sneaky. Lane

:18:09. > :18:13.

:18:13. > :18:20.six, Thomas Fraser-Holmes. Talk about sneaky, Thomas Fraser-Holmes.

:18:20. > :18:30.USA's Conor Dwyer, team-mates with Michael Phelps until he gave up last

:18:30. > :18:31.

:18:31. > :18:37.year. Fraser-Holmes is still looking good. The race is two and three.

:18:37. > :18:47.Agnel still has something left. And Oliveira of Brazil in lane four.

:18:47. > :18:57.Very tight. The white hat of France is still in there. Yannick Agnel,

:18:57. > :19:00.

:19:00. > :19:07.the Olympic champion. Goodness me! Hagino has got it. Kosuke Hagino of

:19:07. > :19:11.Japan, winning that first semifinal. Agnel second. Dwyer third. The time

:19:11. > :19:16.is not that fast. With Robbie Renwick of Great Britain in the

:19:16. > :19:26.second semifinal, that is great news for him. That was amazing pace of

:19:26. > :19:31.

:19:31. > :19:36.Hagino. The Olympic champion second. Not that quick! It was crazy splits

:19:36. > :19:42.from Hagino. We know he trains hard on the back end of the race, but all

:19:42. > :19:47.the eyes were on the top end of the pool, and everybody missed him!

:19:47. > :19:53.has got his 200 and his 400 medley still to come. Those really are his

:19:53. > :19:57.best. He got that bronze medal in the Olympic Games in the 400 medal,

:19:57. > :20:05.pushing Michael Phelps into force. Look at this, right at the end of

:20:05. > :20:15.the race. We thought Agnel and Dwyer were going to take the positions.

:20:15. > :20:26.

:20:26. > :20:36.will have just watched that first semifinal. Very exciting indeed.

:20:36. > :20:36.

:20:36. > :20:46.Ryan Lochte up in lane two. Is a toff, who is very fast, in lane six.

:20:46. > :20:48.

:20:48. > :20:52.-- Danila Izotov. Robbie Renwick has just seen a slow first semi. I echo

:20:52. > :20:57.what Mark Foster said. He gave quite a lot in the heat this morning. He

:20:57. > :21:05.will have to step it up a bit because there are some good swimmers

:21:05. > :21:10.in this one. He has got Ryan Lochte two lanes away in lane two. Danila

:21:10. > :21:15.Izotov has the fastest time this year. He has got to do his own race,

:21:16. > :21:20.Renwick. Very, very important that he looks after himself and doesn't

:21:20. > :21:25.get spooked by anybody else. Absolutely. If you look at this

:21:25. > :21:33.list, you will get spooked! Ryan Lochte coming out in his fancy

:21:33. > :21:37.shoes. Just like the pair you have under your bed! He is the poster boy

:21:37. > :21:42.of American swimming now that Michael Phelps has retired. He is

:21:42. > :21:51.not the fastest in the world this year. He is the defending champion,

:21:51. > :21:54.but not the fastest in the world this year. The world University

:21:54. > :22:04.games champion very recently, and any Izotov is a big threat for the

:22:04. > :22:08.

:22:08. > :22:13.final. Cameron McEvoy of Australia. The new order is appearing,

:22:13. > :22:19.certainly in Australian swimming. The world junior in the 50 and 100m

:22:19. > :22:26.freestyle. This is the 200. The Commonwealth champion in Delhi,

:22:26. > :22:30.Robbie Renwick. From the city of Glasgow. Writ is record holder.

:22:30. > :22:34.There's never been a better opportunity to make the final of the

:22:34. > :22:43.World Championships of this 200 metres freestyle. There's the

:22:43. > :22:53.defending champion, probably the favourite, Ryan Lochte. Lochte lane

:22:53. > :23:16.

:23:16. > :23:23.heats. If Robbie Renwick does that got a decent start up there in two.

:23:23. > :23:31.The defending champion on the 200 200 back, 200 medley and 400 medley,

:23:31. > :23:36.Ryan Lochte - what a swimmer he is! Renwick seems to be regulating it a

:23:36. > :23:41.little bit more. He was not on the pace this morning and came through

:23:41. > :23:51.very, very quick in the last 50. Renwick has to not let them get too

:23:51. > :23:55.

:23:55. > :24:01.far away. Right now, McAvoy, Lochte, is a toff, -- Danila Izotov. He has

:24:01. > :24:07.the fastest time in the world this year. Very good turn. Lochte not

:24:07. > :24:12.using his turn as well as he normally does. Yes. Robbie Renwick

:24:12. > :24:22.has got some work to do. He does come back well on the second 100

:24:22. > :24:37.

:24:37. > :24:47.metres. He is probably about fifth Lochte is going well. Mac one Mac

:24:47. > :25:07.

:25:07. > :25:11.still holding. -- Izotoff still last turn of Ryan Lochte was

:25:11. > :25:18.something special. Something amazing. He was hardly breathing.

:25:18. > :25:25.You didn't really use the turn on the 100 metres. Izotov Had a

:25:25. > :25:30.fantastic turn. He will get confidence from that. Lochte is

:25:30. > :25:40.still hanging about in the pool. A really solid swim from Renwick. Not

:25:40. > :25:51.

:25:51. > :25:59.fazed by either side of him going very mature swim. I've got to tell

:25:59. > :26:04.you, the relief! He's going to qualify fourth. He will be next to

:26:04. > :26:11.Ryan Lochte and next to Conor Dwyer. He will be in lane six. Not a bad

:26:11. > :26:17.lane four the final four Robbie Renwick. The tracks start there, one

:26:17. > :26:24.foot in front of the other. Very interesting stroke. He reads very

:26:24. > :26:32.heavily over to his left hand side. Create a real loping stroke. Lochte

:26:32. > :26:37.is looking over. He is back at the end. That is a trademark of him. He

:26:37. > :26:42.says, I've got my position, why waste any more energy? Robbie

:26:42. > :26:49.Renwick did really well in the middle. I think Lochte was

:26:49. > :26:59.comfortable at the top there. A fairly lazy finish. Izotov Looks

:26:59. > :27:06.

:27:06. > :27:10.good. And Robbie Renwick is in. paced it well. A fantastic swim. He

:27:10. > :27:17.will be pleased with that after the 400 he missed out on earlier in the

:27:17. > :27:24.week. Can he go one better? Can he make it onto the rostrum? We would

:27:24. > :27:31.hope so. If he is on form, he has a lot more. But is he on form? He swam

:27:31. > :27:37.a great race. He just did his own thing. He didn't go out too fast. He

:27:37. > :27:41.did his own thing in the pool, and then he makes it back. He is in that

:27:41. > :27:46.optimum lane, and some of the great Olympic swimmers are on the outside

:27:46. > :27:52.of him. It must be hard to feel that you don't have to go with them.

:27:53. > :27:58.is one of those swims... A race, when it is paced, you can go with

:27:58. > :28:02.other people and burn other people off. When Becky is one her best

:28:02. > :28:08.races, she commanded it from the front. Some people are good at that,

:28:08. > :28:13.and other people like using other people. People have different

:28:13. > :28:18.tactics. We will hear from Robbie later on. We are building up to the

:28:18. > :28:23.final of the women's 200-metre individual medley, where we have not

:28:23. > :28:29.one but two women lining up. One of them is the very young Siobhan-Marie

:28:29. > :28:34.O'Connor, who qualified in night fastest. And Sophie Allen as well,

:28:34. > :28:39.fourth fastest in qualification. Unbelievable. It is great that

:28:39. > :28:44.Siobhan-Marie is in there. She is in contention for Rio. It is amazing

:28:44. > :28:49.for her that she has this final experience. I am excited to see what

:28:49. > :28:54.is coming from her. She swam really quick earlier in the season. It will

:28:55. > :28:59.be great to see her get in amongst the race. And Sophie swam a great

:28:59. > :29:05.race yesterday. She did swim a 100 breaststroke this morning, and

:29:05. > :29:13.didn't make it back. Hopefully, she can swim well tonight. Globally,

:29:13. > :29:16.this is a big race. The Olympic champion is there. Belmonte Garcia

:29:16. > :29:24.is being cheered right now. The local support for her is going to be

:29:24. > :29:30.huge. It is a stacked final. You have Alicia Coutts of Australia as

:29:30. > :29:34.well. It is the opportunity for these two to get the experience. In

:29:34. > :29:38.three years' time... I'm not saying that is when it really matters,

:29:38. > :29:43.because it matters now. But it is experience of the big stage. The

:29:43. > :29:48.more you do it, the more comfortable you become. Everyone wants to aim

:29:48. > :29:53.for the finals and get on the podiums. This is a great stepping

:29:53. > :30:01.stone for these guys, especially Siobhan, who was a bit younger. It

:30:01. > :30:08.is a great block for for Rio. Coutts has a big programme. It may

:30:08. > :30:12.have cost her in the relay yesterday for Australia. We have a big Chinese

:30:13. > :30:22.contingent in the audience here as well. Let's handover the commentary

:30:23. > :30:41.

:30:41. > :30:51.Mary O'Connor is in lane eight for Great Britain. Sophie Allen is in

:30:51. > :30:51.

:30:51. > :30:57.lane six for Great Britain. What a Lane assignment for the Brits.

:30:58. > :31:05.Absolutely. But Katinka Hosszu in Lane four has had multiple races

:31:05. > :31:15.over the year. She broke the one the Hungarian record this morning

:31:15. > :31:20.

:31:20. > :31:26.and pulled out of the semis to try and win this one. Great Britain in

:31:26. > :31:32.lane six and eight. Six is Sophie Allen and eight A Sherborne Marie

:31:32. > :31:38.O'Connor. The weakest leg for the British girls is the backstroke.

:31:38. > :31:45.There breaststroke is good. But out of the blocks and going very well

:31:45. > :31:52.is Katinka Hosszu. She has started really well. We know Shiwen Ye has

:31:52. > :31:57.got a fantastic three staff at the end of the race. Katinka Hosszu has

:31:57. > :32:03.a fantastic backstroke. She did a 59 this morning breaking the

:32:03. > :32:10.Hungarian record. She is trying to put some distance between herself

:32:10. > :32:15.and the white cap of China, Shiwen Ye. Katinka Hosszu's breaststroke

:32:15. > :32:21.is not bad. But Siobhan Mary O'Connor is doing well on the

:32:21. > :32:25.backstroke and is going to turn in second place. She was second after

:32:25. > :32:32.the fly and that is really good for Siobhan Murray a corner. She has

:32:32. > :32:38.got a good breaststroke as well. Now the race is on. They are going

:32:38. > :32:42.to try and catch Katinka Hosszu, the Hungarian. Siobhan Mary

:32:43. > :32:49.O'Connor is still in medal position. The rest of the field are starting

:32:49. > :32:56.to really attack now. Alicia Coutts is going to be in second place. She

:32:56. > :33:01.has got great freestyle. The Olympic champion is in 8th place.

:33:01. > :33:05.Sophie Allen is coming through. What a great race by Katinka Hosszu.

:33:05. > :33:15.Dominated from the start to the finish. I cannot see her losing

:33:15. > :33:22.back, but I do not believe she will give it up. Alicia Coutts is a very

:33:22. > :33:27.good three-star. Finally Katinka Hosszu is going to win a big race.

:33:27. > :33:36.She did not quite break the world record, but she becomes world

:33:36. > :33:40.champion. The silver medal goes to Alicia Coutts. That is her third

:33:40. > :33:47.silver medals so far these championships. And Spain has got

:33:47. > :33:53.the bronze. What a fantastic swim by Katinka Hosszu. You can hear the

:33:53. > :34:00.crowd. You knew the Spanish girl got the bronze medal by the

:34:00. > :34:03.reaction. But she has raced so hard and so determined this year.

:34:03. > :34:08.Everywhere we have seen her raised through Air Europe and the world

:34:08. > :34:13.she has taken 10 or more events as she has prepared herself for

:34:13. > :34:18.raising tough and hard all the way through this competition. That is

:34:18. > :34:28.her first world title. Maybe another one? She does so many

:34:28. > :34:37.

:34:37. > :34:47.events. She won it by miles. Nearly 1.5 seconds. 7th and 8th for the

:34:47. > :34:51.A great experience for the British girls. Sadly it Siobhan Mary

:34:51. > :34:57.O'Connor, I have looked as if she was with them on the turn, not

:34:57. > :35:01.quite her race today, but they will get experience. Definitely. They

:35:01. > :35:06.will be disappointed. They went slower than they did in their heats

:35:06. > :35:10.and the semi-finals come as Sir they will be disappointed. But that

:35:10. > :35:17.should drive them on for the next meet and hopefully they will train

:35:17. > :35:23.and work even harder. The hard work that Katinka Hosszu has done, but

:35:23. > :35:30.Shiwen Ye was nowhere in that event. Katinka Hosszu was determined she

:35:30. > :35:33.was going to address that. Also when she did the 100 backstroke and

:35:33. > :35:39.got a national record and poured out this morning, when people are

:35:39. > :35:45.on forum they pull out of the meat. Shiwen Ye is not the swimmer she

:35:45. > :35:49.was last year. It is an experience for our girls. The more you come to

:35:49. > :35:54.a competition and race the best people in the world, the more

:35:54. > :36:00.comfortable you become doing it. It is great experience. There is still

:36:00. > :36:04.a lot more to come from those two. There is an awful lot more to come

:36:04. > :36:09.with their age. This is a sea- change in the attitude towards

:36:09. > :36:14.British swimming. They want to tighten the squad and they want it

:36:14. > :36:20.to people -- to be people who get into finals. It is a totally

:36:20. > :36:24.different approach to the team. It is such a small team. It is nice to

:36:24. > :36:29.see that and it does need to be more focused. Everyone has to have

:36:30. > :36:33.the same edition and the same goal, to get on the podium. It will be

:36:33. > :36:38.interesting next year with the Commonwealth Games because it is

:36:38. > :36:43.going to be at home again. A lot of these guys had the home crowd

:36:43. > :36:53.experience in London and they have experienced it and they know how it

:36:53. > :36:57.can lift them. Sharon has managed to catch up with Sophie and Siobhan.

:36:58. > :37:03.Maybe not as fast as you would have liked to have gone, but fantastic

:37:03. > :37:09.experience. Everybody wants to improve after the semi-final, but

:37:09. > :37:18.it was an amazing race. Everyone was so close with Katinka Hosszu at

:37:18. > :37:24.the front. It just was not any tonight. Were you surprised to be

:37:24. > :37:30.in there? Yes, definitely. It was a crazy 10 minutes after the semi-

:37:30. > :37:37.final yesterday. I was determined to make the final, that was my aim

:37:37. > :37:43.when I came here. I was just disappointed I could not do a

:37:43. > :37:51.better time tonight. It is a big learning curve. You go out very

:37:51. > :37:55.fast and swim it in a pained away. What is there to work on? I think I

:37:55. > :38:01.worked to my strengths a bit too much because I know my flight is

:38:01. > :38:05.pretty strong. I could sacrifice something at the beginning to make

:38:06. > :38:12.up a few seconds on the back. it help that you push each other

:38:12. > :38:18.like crazy in training? Yes, definitely. My first 100 is my

:38:18. > :38:23.witness and her second 100 is, so it works well for us. Well done,

:38:23. > :38:27.ladies. We did not mention that how close they are in training and

:38:27. > :38:32.swapping British records as well over the last few days. That bodes

:38:32. > :38:36.well because they will push each other on. I know you had to do a

:38:36. > :38:41.lot of your training on your own, but having someone close to push

:38:41. > :38:47.you must be a positive. Sophie is very new, so it has taken a while

:38:47. > :38:52.to adapt, but they were brilliantly together. They will get stronger

:38:52. > :38:59.and stronger and better and better and work on each other's weaknesses.

:38:59. > :39:09.Let's move on to the 400 metres freestyle. We should also mention

:39:09. > :39:30.

:39:30. > :39:40.James Guy competing in his first pace at the moment. Sun Yang's

:39:40. > :39:40.

:39:40. > :39:44.strength is the second harp. -- second half. James Guy is closest

:39:44. > :39:54.to us. It is very difficult to follow from these pictures, I am

:39:54. > :39:54.

:39:54. > :39:59.afraid. Connor Jaeger is holding it, the 22 year-old from Michigan. They

:39:59. > :40:06.have been talking quite highly about this guy. They are looking

:40:06. > :40:11.for the next new star with the retirement of Michael Phelps. But

:40:11. > :40:18.Sun Yang is very strong. He comes back like a rocket in the last 100

:40:18. > :40:25.metres. It is very interesting that he has set such a hard place.

:40:25. > :40:31.metres to go. Sun Yang is half a second behind world record pace. I

:40:31. > :40:36.wonder if he has gone out a little bit too quick. He is looking very

:40:36. > :40:43.good. Connor Jaeger is trying to stay with him, but it is all about

:40:43. > :40:53.the world record. Sun Yang has spotted Connor Jaeger. I think he

:40:53. > :40:57.

:40:57. > :41:07.has moved his stroke rate up. Sun Yang has probably fallen short of

:41:07. > :41:17.the world record. He does come back very fast indeed. He is just

:41:17. > :41:21.

:41:21. > :41:27.outside the record. Connor Jaeger has got the bronze. James Guy swum

:41:27. > :41:34.well, he finished in 5th. That was his first world final. That is very

:41:34. > :41:44.good from the young Brit, 17 years of age. That was a great swim from

:41:44. > :41:44.

:41:44. > :41:54.him. He has not had the best of years. The Japanese 18-year-old

:41:54. > :41:56.

:41:56. > :42:06.came through. James I got 5th. That must have really hurt him in the

:42:06. > :42:19.

:42:19. > :42:26.That is a very impressive World Championship debut for James Guy.

:42:26. > :42:32.He has had a big season. He has done a European, the juniors, the

:42:32. > :42:38.trials as well. Is it easier or harder as a distance runner or a

:42:38. > :42:43.sprinter? Everybody is individual and then it comes down to the coach.

:42:43. > :42:49.We used to have our trials in March, but now we have the trials a month

:42:49. > :42:54.ago, which I like. Once you are swimming fast and you are on a high,

:42:54. > :42:59.it is easier to maintain a high. The best way to maintain form is to

:42:59. > :43:04.raise as much as possible. It is the men's 50 metre fly next. This

:43:04. > :43:14.is an open race. Power and speed can make up for any lack of

:43:14. > :43:36.

:43:36. > :43:46.Florent Manaudou. He is going well, but the rest of the field is coming

:43:46. > :43:53.

:43:53. > :43:56.back. It is the Brazilian! Oh, my goodness me. The defending champion.

:43:56. > :44:06.Could this Evans, nowhere near as quick as I thought it was going to

:44:06. > :44:14.

:44:14. > :44:18.be. Silver medal for the USA. Florent Manaudou was last!

:44:18. > :44:28.American was a backstroke where Anto two years ago. How did Florent

:44:28. > :44:52.

:44:52. > :44:56.Manaudou come last. The defending stadium, because he did fail a drug

:44:56. > :45:02.test. It is about respect. Swimmers do respect athletes who were clean.

:45:02. > :45:06.There are not that many drug cheats in swimming. There is a strict rule

:45:06. > :45:11.and format of drug testing. It is pretty strict within swimming, so we

:45:12. > :45:17.are very lucky. There is a respect thing, where athletes may feel a bit

:45:17. > :45:24.cheated by him as well. You were a bronze medallist in this in 2001.

:45:24. > :45:29.How do you get a medal in the 50 fly? Swim quick! It is a question of

:45:29. > :45:36.getting it all right. With me, the start had to be right. With

:45:36. > :45:43.butterfly, the more you rush, the timing has to be right. I would

:45:43. > :45:50.start quick, find my strokes, and the power came through. You have to

:45:50. > :45:55.not snatch the water. With Cesar Cielo, it is a grey area, because it

:45:55. > :46:02.wasn't proved either way. Let's move on to the women's 100 metres fly

:46:02. > :46:12.final now. Six of the line-up were in the final in London last year. A

:46:12. > :46:28.

:46:28. > :46:38.butterfly. That was very close indeed. Otterson has come up really

:46:38. > :46:39.

:46:39. > :46:49.well. Sjostrom is staying with her. Going well is Bianchi of Italy. I'm

:46:49. > :46:59.not sure she can hold that pace. Ottesen Grey is faster than the rest

:46:59. > :47:24.

:47:24. > :47:31.Sjostrom of Sweden gets it. The Olympic champion has to take bronze.

:47:31. > :47:35.That was a textbook swim there from so strong. -- from Stu Ostrom. She

:47:35. > :47:38.used the different techniques she had used in the semifinal. She said

:47:38. > :47:43.she was more relaxed in this competition. Had a few changes in

:47:43. > :47:48.her life and the Olympic Games. Going from the fourth -- from a

:47:48. > :47:58.fourth in the Olympics to winning now... You can see she is excited.

:47:58. > :48:06.

:48:06. > :48:13.how it can spur you on. Unbelievable. She swam it so well.

:48:13. > :48:21.Nobody was going to beat her. She wanted it. She looks fantastic.

:48:21. > :48:28.world-class field. Vollmer won the Olympic Games. Going into these

:48:28. > :48:34.championships, she looks good with the times. When Sarah Sjostrom first

:48:34. > :48:43.raised, she was very young. She came fourth in the Olympics. She has come

:48:43. > :48:47.back and one. For many, it is hard to keep it going. It is a cycle of

:48:47. > :48:54.four years, and it is a very long time in your life to commit to. She

:48:54. > :49:00.is at the beginning of that, and it bodes well. Definitely. She was only

:49:00. > :49:05.15, which was so, so young. She went back and trained hard. She wants to

:49:05. > :49:11.achieve more. She is motivated and driven, and works hard. Another lady

:49:11. > :49:21.who does all of those is up next. We are going to show you the second

:49:21. > :49:45.

:49:45. > :49:50.breaststroke semifinal for a reason. Ruta Meilutyte. A brilliant start.

:49:50. > :49:54.That is a great omen for this world record. Let's hope she does it.

:49:54. > :50:00.Great. Not just the reaction time, but the way she came through the

:50:00. > :50:09.water. Meilutyte is right on course for this. She just needs to qualify

:50:09. > :50:15.for the final. The night before the final, the semis, is the time to go

:50:15. > :50:25.for world records. She is well ahead of her own best time. She is off the

:50:25. > :50:35.world record, but that is a very fast one. Yuliya Efrimova is going

:50:35. > :50:50.

:50:50. > :50:55.proved she can go even faster. What a great swim that was! Attacked it

:50:55. > :51:01.down that first 50. She has got the world record. The Olympic champion

:51:01. > :51:06.is now the world record holder on the 50 metres breaststroke. The same

:51:06. > :51:14.reaction as we saw last year. Almost disbelief. This girl has trained

:51:14. > :51:17.very hard. The medal hasn't been won, but the world record has been

:51:17. > :51:25.captured. She is now the Olympic champion and the world record

:51:25. > :51:35.holder. That first 50 was blistering. The pacing was perfect.

:51:35. > :51:40.To get under 30 seconds, quicker than this morning. Almost at the

:51:40. > :51:46.end, just that glide... If she can finish on a full stroke, she could

:51:46. > :51:51.maybe go even quicker tomorrow night. On butterfly, you try and

:51:51. > :51:54.adjust your strokes are you finish right on the end. You do that on

:51:54. > :52:02.breaststroke as well. It's the sort of thing you learn with experience.

:52:02. > :52:12.Maybe she needs a few more years to work it out! It is Plymouth and

:52:12. > :52:21.

:52:21. > :52:26.like to think of her as being made in Britain, don't we? What was a

:52:26. > :52:31.scary about that race was she glided in at the end. What else can this

:52:31. > :52:36.girl do? She is just unbelievable. I am looking forward to the final

:52:36. > :52:46.tomorrow night. Do you think she could break it again tomorrow?

:52:46. > :52:47.

:52:47. > :52:51.Without a shadow of the doubt. If she has a good finish, maybe another

:52:51. > :52:59.half a second. When you saw her walk off for her interview, if you look

:52:59. > :53:05.at her back, she has developed a lot more muscle. You have the maturity

:53:05. > :53:10.that comes mentally and physically as well, between 15 and 16. It is so

:53:10. > :53:15.exciting what she can go on to achieve. Definitely. She has got one

:53:15. > :53:19.of the best stance I have ever seen. She is amazing. We do like to

:53:19. > :53:25.think of her as British, and a lot of the guys on the British team know

:53:25. > :53:31.her very well. We do cheer for her. We will be rooting for her

:53:31. > :53:36.tomorrow. Next up is the women's 100 metres backstroke semifinals. We

:53:36. > :53:46.have a British interest in this. Betty has a lot of interest in this,

:53:46. > :54:00.

:54:00. > :54:06.as she spends a lot of time with 100 metres backstroke. Lauren

:54:06. > :54:13.Quigley right at the top there. A decent start from her. Liz Pelton

:54:13. > :54:22.from the USA as well. Pelton didn't go out too quickly, but came back

:54:22. > :54:27.very strong in the end. Quigley is doing well. Currently in fourth

:54:27. > :54:36.place. We would like to do well for sure. The middle of the pool is

:54:36. > :54:42.where the race is. Force will do, I think. She has got to bring it back

:54:42. > :54:52.down this last 25 metres. It looks like it is Seebohm at the moment.

:54:52. > :55:13.

:55:13. > :55:23.Terakawa third. Lauren Quigley was sixth in the end. Hocking finished

:55:23. > :55:26.

:55:26. > :55:36.very well as well. The first semifinal won by Seebohm. Lauren

:55:36. > :55:40.

:55:40. > :55:45.Quigley, finishing 12th overall, and not making it through to tomorrow's

:55:45. > :55:55.final. The fastest qualifier Missy Franklin, that girl who did so well

:55:55. > :55:55.

:55:55. > :55:59.in London. She is the favourite going into tomorrow's final. It was

:55:59. > :56:05.the men's semifinal as well, and unfortunately, Christopher

:56:05. > :56:10.Walker-Hebborn didn't make it through either. Lauren is only 18.

:56:10. > :56:13.This is her first competition. She is just shining through. This is her

:56:13. > :56:23.first senior meat. When I went through to my first world

:56:23. > :56:24.

:56:24. > :56:30.competition, I was in pieces. It was great experience for her tonight.

:56:30. > :56:36.She is definitely the future. the names to watch. Will Christopher

:56:36. > :56:41.be disappointed? Yes, definitely. In the trials, he swum a fantastic

:56:41. > :56:45.time. He was nearly a second off that. The time you want to deliver

:56:45. > :56:49.is when you come to your Championships, as closed your best

:56:49. > :56:56.as possible. Tomorrow, one race in particular stands out, the men's 200

:56:56. > :57:02.metres freestyle with Robbie Renwick and Ryan Lochte. Agnel as well,

:57:02. > :57:08.depending on how good his training is going. A great chance for Robbie.

:57:08. > :57:13.He has got a shout. It is a loaded final. The semifinals were not that

:57:13. > :57:22.quick, so he is somebody who is always up for a race. He has got a

:57:22. > :57:27.chance. We will not write him off. Anything could happen. And that 1500

:57:27. > :57:35.freestyle as well. Definitely, I cannot wait for that race. I think

:57:35. > :57:45.that world record might go. Ledecky is on form. The men's 100 metres

:57:45. > :57:45.
