:01:18. > :01:24.You'd half expect her to make that, especially hitting up into the wind.

:01:25. > :01:28.Go but yes, you would on other surfaces, but I do think it is a

:01:29. > :01:31.tough shot to play our grass court. To really get under the ball and

:01:32. > :01:40.spin it over your opponent's head. That's more like it! An emphatic way

:01:41. > :02:02.to record her first win. That's something Radwanska won't be

:02:03. > :02:07.allowing her to do, get hold of the Baltic topic comes that very hard.

:02:08. > :02:33.Lucic-Baroni very quick up to this one. All over it. Too much hyped

:02:34. > :02:55.from Radwanska. -- height. Yes, might find it a little harder

:02:56. > :02:59.coming down the end where we believe the wind is blowing into her so she

:03:00. > :03:32.is having to fight against it. She should be used all of that

:03:33. > :03:39.because there are other players who can beat her when it comes to power.

:03:40. > :03:43.That's what she's so good at, and absorbing pace from her opponents

:03:44. > :03:59.and redirecting the play. Just a little wayward in this game,

:04:00. > :04:24.Radwanska. It is a break for the qualifier. You

:04:25. > :04:34.would expect nothing less of Lucic-Baroni.

:04:35. > :04:42.Now, this isn't such a good sign. I'm just thinking about Mirjana, it

:04:43. > :04:51.doesn't seem very good, does it? She's 56th in the world, which is a

:04:52. > :04:58.fantastic ranking, and has won a lot of matches, but it's so strong. The

:04:59. > :05:03.last direct at into main draws was Heather Watson at 55. In case that

:05:04. > :05:09.sounds rather confusing, Mirjana must've just got a couple of spots

:05:10. > :05:14.from when the entry lists were sorted out for this event, which is

:05:15. > :05:22.usually six weeks before the start. It does get a little confusing. I

:05:23. > :05:26.was on the tool when she was 15 or 16 and won her first tournament when

:05:27. > :05:34.she was 16. She won her second couple of years ago at 32. Just

:05:35. > :05:38.can't quite get over it. She's done really well to come back. Had quite

:05:39. > :05:42.a few years out of the game. No longer lives in Croatia but she is

:05:43. > :05:51.still their best player, still represents them.

:05:52. > :05:58.She married a number of years ago now. I don't know what's going on

:05:59. > :06:02.but she offers three doesn't feel too well. That's not the best sign,

:06:03. > :06:20.is it? The doctor out. Well, she did play a match earlier

:06:21. > :06:30.today, beat the lucky loser Denisa Allertova in straight sets. I can't

:06:31. > :06:37.say there is anything obvious. Five games that they've played.

:06:38. > :06:47.No medical time-out taken. That's good to do, just let Radwanska know

:06:48. > :06:55.what's happening. Maybe she was just a little bit under the weather.

:06:56. > :07:01.The sun's out here in Eastbourne. You've got to feel chirpy, surely!

:07:02. > :07:15.The fans are feeling good. If she isn't feeling great, she'll

:07:16. > :07:19.want to keep these points short and snappy, which she tries to do

:07:20. > :07:23.anyway. There is no holding back when it comes to Lucic-Baroni. It is

:07:24. > :08:31.all or nothing, no plan B. But unfortunately, when she was at

:08:32. > :08:37.her very best, that was a long time ago. Too many errors these days.

:08:38. > :08:48.Still a fine player and quite capable of worrying the top.

:08:49. > :08:56.Offered to WTA titles, I wonder which one brings her the most joy,

:08:57. > :09:59.the first one or the last one. -- of her two WTA titles.

:10:00. > :10:04.Certainly the amount of time and commitment she's put in on the grass

:10:05. > :10:13.this season has paid off. Whatever happens here, after the first round

:10:14. > :10:22.in Holland... Much better here in Eastbourne. As she recovers from a

:10:23. > :11:02.three-game deficit to level up in this first set.

:11:03. > :11:08.I'd hazard a guess she's feeling a tad better and Radwanska once again

:11:09. > :11:35.under pressure on her serve. So important for Radwanska to really

:11:36. > :11:36.hit her shots here because Lucic-Baroni will be taking

:11:37. > :11:54.advantage of a wise. -- otherwise. Just get the feeling over the last

:11:55. > :11:56.12 months, that's department has been beefed up. Always accurate with

:11:57. > :12:16.her deliveries. Very quick, Radwanska to change

:12:17. > :12:19.things up if she thinks things are going the wrong way. Great on-board

:12:20. > :12:33.computer that she has. That could have been awkward.

:12:34. > :12:42.Radwanska hold serve. And pushes ahead once more in the second set.

:12:43. > :12:48.You talked about her mindset with her serve, what does that mean?

:12:49. > :12:54.There comes a point in the player's development that technical lead big

:12:55. > :12:59.changes are hard to make and to add another five or ten mph behind your

:13:00. > :13:03.server is tough to do. Particularly when you hit your 20s. But the

:13:04. > :13:09.mindset of trying to be more aggressive, that is something you

:13:10. > :13:13.are in control of yourself. To toss the ball up, she launches herself

:13:14. > :13:19.into the serve, that is something that Radwanska does much better

:13:20. > :13:26.these days. And overall, with the rest of her game. I am a big

:13:27. > :13:30.believer, aggressive tennis -- if aggressive tennis doesn't come to

:13:31. > :13:34.you naturally, if you're mindset can be up there on your server, it rubs

:13:35. > :13:40.off on to the rest of your game. It can make you become more aggressive

:13:41. > :13:46.from the back of the Court or at the front of the court and everything

:13:47. > :13:50.else follows. You anticipated my next question! Are there any other

:13:51. > :13:54.aspects of her game which you have seen change? She is looking to go

:13:55. > :13:59.after second serves more and get up the court. And the other thing for

:14:00. > :14:03.Radwanska is that this year her scheduling has been better. She is

:14:04. > :14:08.smarter about how much he plays and if she is injured or she has a

:14:09. > :14:11.niggle, she doesn't need to put herself on the line week in, week

:14:12. > :14:20.out. She needs to peek at the right tournaments. And she has trained her

:14:21. > :15:12.clay-court season. New ball skills -- new ball.

:15:13. > :15:19.She looks very good on the ball. Particularly when she doesn't have

:15:20. > :15:33.to run or stretch for it. When she has got the time.

:15:34. > :15:57.Game, Mrs Lucic-Baroni. The Croatian really sticking in here. She had the

:15:58. > :16:07.doctor out a couple of games ago. Her husband, to the left of your

:16:08. > :16:16.picture. And coach, to the right. Husbands doesn't fancy combining the

:16:17. > :16:23.role. Oh, that was huge! Very compact on that backhand. Uses a

:16:24. > :16:28.very stiff bracket, Szczesny don't get the sound on the replay but it

:16:29. > :17:03.came right of the sweet spot. Great racket head speed.

:17:04. > :17:13.that's where Radwanska is clever. She doesn't necessarily play the

:17:14. > :18:15.outright pass. She liked the target. Delightful, it really is, from our

:18:16. > :18:22.top seed. Some authority here. Certainly not having it all her own

:18:23. > :18:28.way. I wonder how long Lucic-Baroni will play for? Is she inspired by

:18:29. > :18:36.the owners Williams or Kimiko Dante who is even older than me! I think

:18:37. > :18:47.all the players are inspired by her. She's in her 40s now. I think she's

:18:48. > :18:53.getting beyond that! I remember, 1520 years ago, when you are

:18:54. > :18:57.approaching or 30s, before that was going to be when you need to start

:18:58. > :19:03.thinking about what the earth you would do apart from tennis. In my

:19:04. > :19:12.late 20s, people started asking, when you retiring?! Nowadays, if you

:19:13. > :19:21.don't go on to your 30s, it is as if you are putting up yours too early.

:19:22. > :19:27.But the tour has so much to offer. If you are playing those big events

:19:28. > :19:33.week in, week out, it makes it so much more enjoyable. You are not

:19:34. > :19:36.grafting at the ITF tournaments. Yes, she had to work away through

:19:37. > :19:46.the qualifying rounds, but it was all worthwhile. Yes, and she was on

:19:47. > :19:50.the cut of making the Olympic cut, -- on the cusp of making the cut.

:19:51. > :19:56.But she missed many years of tennis so she is probably about 27 or 28 in

:19:57. > :20:22.tennis years. Serving here to stay in this first set.

:20:23. > :20:27.She is a tough cookie, Radwanska, tough on herself. The ball really

:20:28. > :21:31.moved on her there. Not happy with that. It hit the line

:21:32. > :21:40.right in front of our commentary box. And it has been a good set from

:21:41. > :21:46.Lucic-Baroni, but facing set points here.

:21:47. > :21:58.Game and first set, Miss Radwanska. Radwanska slightly cross that she

:21:59. > :22:04.let a three - zero lead slip, but in the end, get the job done. Wins by

:22:05. > :22:11.six games to four. Just in case you have forgotten from last year, you

:22:12. > :22:24.can have your coach on pretty much once per set.

:22:25. > :22:55.As you can see, it is a lovely sunny afternoon at Eastbourne and if you

:22:56. > :22:59.want to follow any tennis news, you needed BBC sport at. Once we are

:23:00. > :23:07.done here, then I am sure you are in complete football don't -- dose, and

:23:08. > :23:14.this is what Radwanska wants to get off the court in time to see. On the

:23:15. > :23:20.red button today. And then highlights of everything and

:23:21. > :23:23.discussions at 10:55pm. And 35 minutes later in Northern Ireland

:23:24. > :23:26.because you will still be recovering from the enormity of the victory

:23:27. > :23:30.over Germany! If you like your cricket, this is

:23:31. > :23:36.what is taking place today. You can follow that now on the BBC app where

:23:37. > :23:39.you can get the clips as well as followed the BBC Test match special.

:23:40. > :23:47.That's on BBC five live sports extra.

:23:48. > :23:57.I don't think she was talking about where can we go see the football!

:23:58. > :24:03.Thomas is a good man, he has been in her corner for a good long time now.

:24:04. > :24:04.Since she was a junior. She seemed quite disgruntled at that change of

:24:05. > :24:36.ends, Radwanska. It's interesting that Radwanska even

:24:37. > :24:44.called him on to court, because it's not something you see often. She is

:24:45. > :24:51.not really one for on court chatting. Yes, she's a wonderful

:24:52. > :24:56.tactician, she works it out herself. I just wonder if she is being a

:24:57. > :25:08.little more insecure than normal eco-she lost in her opening match in

:25:09. > :25:11.Birmingham last week Ek -- to Coco Vandeweghe and base doesn't feel

:25:12. > :25:19.completely settled with the type of play she is facing. -- perhaps

:25:20. > :25:24.doesn't feel completely settled. She isn't getting rid getting stuck into

:25:25. > :25:29.this match despite winning this first set. That is kind of the issue

:25:30. > :25:33.whenever you up against somebody like she doesn't give you any

:25:34. > :25:35.rhythm, as you have to go with the flow and put those balls back into

:25:36. > :26:07.play. Won't want Lucic-Baroni is to get

:26:08. > :27:04.away here. It's the age-old problem, how do you

:27:05. > :27:29.hit through or past Radwanska? Good movement there from

:27:30. > :27:38.Lucic-Baroni. The control, too. -- good control,

:27:39. > :28:05.too. And maybe that is why she was so

:28:06. > :28:11.worried at the end of that first set. Really feels the threat from

:28:12. > :28:23.Lucic-Baroni. Can you follow her, please? She has just run off court.

:28:24. > :28:30.Mrs Lucic-Baroni just went to the bathroom. That is not a good sign.

:28:31. > :28:37.I'm surprised she didn't go at the end of the first set. Unscheduled

:28:38. > :28:42.bathroom break. I'm not sure about the stats, five unforced errors from

:28:43. > :28:46.Lucic-Baroni? It felt like she was in double figures in the opening

:28:47. > :28:55.set. And Radwanska doing a decent job on serve. Not venturing to the

:28:56. > :28:59.net too often. Hasn't had too many opportunities because it has been a

:29:00. > :29:15.winner or an error for the most part from Lucic-Baroni.

:29:16. > :29:28.Radwanska rather hopefully walking out to receive serve, no sign of

:29:29. > :29:34.Lucic-Baroni as yet. I hope she is all right, actually. Had the doctor

:29:35. > :29:39.out midway through that first set. But Radwanska doing the right thing.

:29:40. > :29:47.It is so easy to sit in your chair and not do a lot. You've got to keep

:29:48. > :29:53.moving. She is back. She seems all right, I she is.

:29:54. > :29:59.And she might want to remember after a terrible start to the first set,

:30:00. > :30:33.she is up a break early on in the second.

:30:34. > :31:55.Well, if you look at what has been happening in the last 20 minutes or

:31:56. > :31:57.so, since Radwanska pinched that opening set, it has been

:31:58. > :33:02.Lucic-Baroni dominating the points. sometimes she can look a little

:33:03. > :33:09.untidy with her footwork. Almost 6-foot. Not too many players

:33:10. > :33:14.confessed to being 6-foot, they are always five foot 11. Oh, but great

:33:15. > :33:46.levers. Advantage Mrs Lucic-Baroni. That was sloppy footwork, right

:33:47. > :33:52.there. Planted far too early, waited for the ball to come onto her

:33:53. > :33:56.racket. Square on. You can't do that in the grass court season because

:33:57. > :34:06.the ball takes so many last-minute dives.

:34:07. > :34:13.And all of a sudden, the former champion and finalist here last year

:34:14. > :34:29.has a chance to wrestle back some control in this match.

:34:30. > :34:44.And that is a real shame. The early break. She looks really despondent.

:34:45. > :34:52.She is clearly not feeling her best out there, having had the doctor on.

:34:53. > :34:54.But actually, playing pretty well. Despite everything. Just in a body

:34:55. > :36:22.language, not quite there. She took all the pace of this folly.

:36:23. > :36:26.Great feel. She has all the shots, and she has had quite enough of

:36:27. > :36:56.being pummelled from the back of the court by Lucic-Baroni.

:36:57. > :37:06.Just a little too heavy. More mistakes from the southern end with

:37:07. > :37:10.the wind behind her. You are right, despite the fact she is playing

:37:11. > :37:25.well, just the fact that she is not feeling great is getting in the way.

:37:26. > :37:44.Yes, come on says Agnes guff. Shaking her head, Lucic-Baroni. --

:37:45. > :37:53.ladies and gentlemen, Mrs Lucic-Baroni had to retire. We don't

:37:54. > :37:56.often see that. That is a real shame for her. She came up from a

:37:57. > :38:01.qualifying match and is clearly playing well but she must be feeling

:38:02. > :38:08.absolutely terrible. She is a fighter. To retire, clearly she is

:38:09. > :38:12.not feeling great, but it is a shame because she was not playing back

:38:13. > :38:17.tennis. You called it, you just said, and you don't often see it,

:38:18. > :38:21.players often take their bathroom breaks at the end of a set, so we

:38:22. > :38:29.can only speculate at what might have happened as she dashed off. Oh,

:38:30. > :38:33.dear. Well, she has had a few grass court matches going into Wimbledon.

:38:34. > :38:39.She will be dangerous, capable of beating the big names. And Radwanska

:38:40. > :38:52.might be heading for the practice courts. Our next match on Centre

:38:53. > :38:57.Court features Johanna Konta. We can have a look at the numbers, and

:38:58. > :39:07.reappear curiously at them, I think they are coming along, any second

:39:08. > :39:13.now... Well, there you can see Radwanska rock-solid on serve. I

:39:14. > :39:18.first serve percentage. Second serve, as well. Neither player

:39:19. > :39:23.venturing forward to much. But Radwanska capitalising on all those

:39:24. > :39:27.break point opportunities. Never too many errors but never too many

:39:28. > :39:35.winners from Radwanska, ever. She did enough but strange way to go

:39:36. > :39:39.through. Let's hear from her. Not the way you want to go through, but

:39:40. > :39:45.how do you assess the way you are playing. It was a tough match. She

:39:46. > :39:50.was playing really good tennis even when something happened to her

:39:51. > :39:55.today. I am very happy that I could play some good games but hopefully

:39:56. > :40:00.she will get better soon and she will play some good tennis at one.

:40:01. > :40:06.Grass has always been a good service for you. You have done well at

:40:07. > :40:11.Wimbledon and won the title here. How do you feel on these calls? I

:40:12. > :40:17.always feel great, I am happy to be for the 10th time so thank you for

:40:18. > :40:27.coming and see you tomorrow! Ladies and gentlemen, Agnieszka Radwanska!

:40:28. > :40:31.Obviously hugely disappointing for Lucic-Baroni, but bigger fish to fry

:40:32. > :40:34.for her and she will want to be in optimum form for women. Radwanska

:40:35. > :40:40.safely through and somebody else safely through is, well she was

:40:41. > :40:44.going to be the next big thing a couple of years ago. But the shard

:40:45. > :40:53.of Canada has had all sorts of issues of course, coloured Eugenie

:40:54. > :41:05.Bouchard, came through against Irina Kennelly and they do of Romania. --

:41:06. > :41:12.Irina Camellia bedroom, and this pair of us as a London was beaten by

:41:13. > :41:18.Kristina Mladenovic of France. So that's a browser that we so

:41:19. > :41:23.accustomed to on the clay of the Paris open is making a successful

:41:24. > :41:27.reappearance here on the grass of Eastbourne. The zebra is not extinct

:41:28. > :41:42.in Sussex. Other results to give you...

:41:43. > :42:12.Tsurenko will be the next opponent for a British player.

:42:13. > :42:47.Some second-round scores to give you...

:42:48. > :42:53.The next match we are going to see will feature the British number one,

:42:54. > :42:55.Joe Konta, who this time last year was sitting alongside us here in our

:42:56. > :43:01.little presentation booth and she was ranked 100 something in the

:43:02. > :43:05.world and money people had heard of her and suddenly her world is turned

:43:06. > :43:09.upside down and she is now going to be seeded at Wimbledon next week,

:43:10. > :43:11.the first woman to be seeded at Wimbledon for three decades and she

:43:12. > :43:15.really is someone who the other players on the tour are having to

:43:16. > :43:17.look out for. Yesterday, when it was pouring with rain, she spoke to Sam

:43:18. > :43:30.Smith. Jo, welcome back to Eastbourne. What

:43:31. > :43:35.was it like walking through the gates with a huge poster in front of

:43:36. > :43:43.you and coming back as a seed and a top 20 player? I did a double-take.

:43:44. > :43:48.I was like, "Oh, is that me?" . It was quite an imposing poster. I'm

:43:49. > :43:55.happy to be here. I get to go home and spent time with my family. And I

:43:56. > :44:00.get support in the lead at so that's the main thing. A lot has changed

:44:01. > :44:03.for you in a year, particularly with that wonderful run to the Australian

:44:04. > :44:11.open semifinals in January. Do you feel life has changed in terms of

:44:12. > :44:15.status, fame? Not really. On paper, it definitely does look different,

:44:16. > :44:20.my ranking, this year, compared to last year. How is it coping with the

:44:21. > :44:23.change in status, the workload? Has it come from yourself or compromise

:44:24. > :44:29.outside advice and help from people around you? The biggest thing is

:44:30. > :44:34.that I don't judge myself on my ranking all my results. My

:44:35. > :44:40.self-respect towards myself very much comes from my work ethic, how I

:44:41. > :44:45.approach the work every single day, so as long as that stays very clear

:44:46. > :44:49.and clean, I think I'm better equipped to really handle whatever

:44:50. > :44:55.happens. You that's only great results on hard courts. How well do

:44:56. > :44:58.you feel your game fits to grass? Obviously, what happened after the

:44:59. > :45:03.grass season here last year, my best results were at these events up

:45:04. > :45:10.until that point, so I think it's all relative and we'll see how it

:45:11. > :45:16.goes. I definitely don't think that last year's result is any reflection

:45:17. > :45:19.on how I will do this year. It is a New Year, new tournament, but I'm

:45:20. > :45:25.just really happy to be a part of it.

:45:26. > :45:28.Jo Konta and here is this huge poster of her that she was talking

:45:29. > :45:33.about it what a difference a year makes and her year will end with the

:45:34. > :45:36.US open but before the US open, she has a date in South America because

:45:37. > :45:54.Jo is going to be heading out to the Olympic Games.

:45:55. > :46:06.Jessica Ennis-Hill is back on top of the world. Nicola Adams has just

:46:07. > :46:14.made history. That's a huge jump! Laura Trott, world champion!

:46:15. > :46:18.40-something days and counting. Anne Keothavong has popped back from the

:46:19. > :46:23.commentary box. Whatley or collections of the picks? My best

:46:24. > :46:30.moment. -- what are your recollection of the Olympics? It was

:46:31. > :46:34.huge for me to be part of the Olympics for London 2012. My first

:46:35. > :46:38.and only the picks and it was on home soil. Did you stay in the

:46:39. > :46:41.Olympic village? We did for a few nights before the tournament started

:46:42. > :46:44.but all of us British players who won the team have a place in

:46:45. > :46:49.south-west London, so I actually stayed in my own flat. In hindsight,

:46:50. > :46:53.do you wish you hadn't stayed at home? Do you wish you'd just totally

:46:54. > :47:01.embraced it and be on the other big village for the whole time? -- been

:47:02. > :47:05.in the Olympic Village. Stratford is where I grew up. But you didn't grow

:47:06. > :47:11.up surrounded by 20,000 Kenyan athletes. There is a part of me that

:47:12. > :47:14.feels like I missed out on the Olympic experience at the other part

:47:15. > :47:19.of me knows that it wouldn't have made sense to stay in Stratford and

:47:20. > :47:23.be competing in Wimbledon, knowing the commute and knowing what it was

:47:24. > :47:29.like at that time of the year. The Central line is a killer! Do you

:47:30. > :47:32.think for someone like Serena, where do you think an Olympic gold bundle

:47:33. > :47:38.sits for her in her list of triumphs? -- gold medal. I think it

:47:39. > :47:41.is right up there. She puts herself on the line at the Olympics every

:47:42. > :47:46.time. What is this going to be, her fifth Olympic Games? And with Venus

:47:47. > :47:51.as well, teaming up to win gold in the doubles, it's a big thing for

:47:52. > :47:54.the Williams sisters. I know her big thing, though, the grand slam

:47:55. > :47:59.titles, but I'm pretty sure she would put the Olympic gold medal at

:48:00. > :48:02.there. Gulf is the Olympics for the first time this year and there are a

:48:03. > :48:05.lot of people who think that is a bit of nonsense, and there are still

:48:06. > :48:10.some people who aren't convinced about tennis's place against. What

:48:11. > :48:16.is a attitude to that? I sit in the middle here. I don't think tennis

:48:17. > :48:22.should be part of the Olympics. I don't think it's really an Olympic

:48:23. > :48:27.sport. It is a professional sport that's played right from the start

:48:28. > :48:31.of the year until October, November. It's not like the other track and

:48:32. > :48:35.field, swimming, where you get your moment in the spotlight once every

:48:36. > :48:39.four years. As a tennis player, you get to experience those type of

:48:40. > :48:43.feelings we can, week out and at the grand slams four times a year. I

:48:44. > :48:47.think the Olympics is very special but already you can see a number of

:48:48. > :48:54.top players, more on the men's side, have opted out on the Olympics and

:48:55. > :48:58.have chosen not to go to Rio. It is interesting. Kyrgios and tonic

:48:59. > :49:02.amongst others, who are now being accused of betraying the Australian

:49:03. > :49:06.Olympic ethic by not wanting to go to the games so it depends on which

:49:07. > :49:10.side of the fence you sit. You don't see... Our English footballers would

:49:11. > :49:13.be out there, the top guys will be competing at the Olympics. We don't

:49:14. > :49:16.see our rugby team at the Olympics. I don't think Gulf should be at the

:49:17. > :49:21.Olympics in the same way that tennis shouldn't. Each to their own but at

:49:22. > :49:24.the same time, I'm glad to have experienced that and I can still say

:49:25. > :49:30.I'm an Olympian. You can say that for evermore! Just going back to Jo

:49:31. > :49:34.Konta, who has a first-round match against a player who has played a

:49:35. > :49:39.match already today. How difficult will not be for her opponent? Well,

:49:40. > :49:43.it was based great sets victory for Lucy Tsurenko so she will be feeling

:49:44. > :49:47.good about herself. It wasn't physically too taxing for her and I

:49:48. > :49:57.think it is going to be a tricky one for Joe, to be cleverly honest. Jo

:49:58. > :50:04.is a completely different player to what she was back then. The thing

:50:05. > :50:10.about Jo is that 12 months ago, the border said Jo Konta? She might get

:50:11. > :50:16.through around, and now it is Jo Konta, she's going to be in the

:50:17. > :50:19.quarters at the least. And she doesn't get the quarters, it will

:50:20. > :50:28.seem that she has failed, which is ridiculous because she hasn't. Still

:50:29. > :50:33.got a lot to go. Tsurenko will be a tough opponent. I bumped into Jo's

:50:34. > :50:36.parents on the way here, who were a bit apprehensive, given their

:50:37. > :50:40.head-to-head record. Do they walk in? They live just down the road.

:50:41. > :50:43.I'm sure they would have walked it. It would have been far too lazy to

:50:44. > :50:49.have driven! We are at Queens on Sunday. We had 4 million people

:50:50. > :50:52.watching tennis on a Sunday afternoon on BBC One, which is a

:50:53. > :50:57.fantastic audience, given everything else. The weather was quite nice and

:50:58. > :51:02.all the football. Huge audience, a testament to a great event and a

:51:03. > :51:05.fantastic match but also annexed Audrey performance from Andy Murray

:51:06. > :51:09.who, having lost the first set to Milos Raonic, blades are extremely

:51:10. > :51:15.tennis. It wasn't just that he'd won the match, it was the manner in

:51:16. > :51:21.which he won it. You are seeing now almost a complete player. To come

:51:22. > :51:32.back from a set down against Raonic, Lendl back in his box... Everyone

:51:33. > :51:36.seems to be going on about him. Andy Murray I think is our greatest ever

:51:37. > :51:39.athlete. I'm with you on that. Of all the people that we have playing

:51:40. > :51:45.on the international sporting stayed at the moment, whatever sport it

:51:46. > :51:53.might be, he, I think has to be the number one because of who he is

:51:54. > :51:57.competing against and we can, week out, he... We will miss him. When he

:51:58. > :52:01.got his racket down, we will think, why didn't we get behind him of it

:52:02. > :52:04.more? The British public have embraced a more so than they did in

:52:05. > :52:08.previous years but they could do even more to see is the best we've

:52:09. > :52:12.had in a long time. What is your first memory of beating Andy? I

:52:13. > :52:17.couldn't tell you. Probably when he was a young teenager, I would like

:52:18. > :52:24.to say he was a brat but I don't think he was! Was he cracking jokes

:52:25. > :52:29.every five and its? Actually, Judy took me away when I was 13 on an

:52:30. > :52:33.international trip so my memories of the Murray boys were whatever she

:52:34. > :52:36.spoke to us about and I think it was probably the issues she had

:52:37. > :52:41.controlling his temper and his behaviour on the court, which was

:52:42. > :52:47.notorious, even when he was a kid. And very different to Jamie, who I

:52:48. > :52:51.assume was happy-go-lucky. They are completely different personalities,

:52:52. > :52:55.more so now, but Andy, away from the tennis court, that persona he puts

:52:56. > :52:59.out on the court, he couldn't be any more different. He's lovely, very

:53:00. > :53:06.down-to-earth, very friendly, very easy to get along with. When he was

:53:07. > :53:11.that age, where people saying, when he was 15, 16, "Watching, he's going

:53:12. > :53:14.to go a long way"? I believe so. He was one of the top juniors in the

:53:15. > :53:19.world and have achieved so much already. Nobody would have expected

:53:20. > :53:23.what he would go on to achieve and to lift a Wimbledon trophy, it's

:53:24. > :53:28.something special and something I'm not sure we'll see again in our

:53:29. > :53:32.lifetime, a British player lifting that Wimbledon trophy, someone other

:53:33. > :53:37.than Andy Murray. I don't know. Talking about being a junior, and he

:53:38. > :53:41.was a top junior, Petra Kvitova was up here a few moments ago and I'm on

:53:42. > :53:47.to ask her and I forgot, she was nowhere as a junior, barely got into

:53:48. > :53:49.the world's top 30, and is now double grand slam winner, and if you

:53:50. > :53:54.look at her contemporaries as juniors, most of them, I of the

:53:55. > :53:58.names and I thought, I'd almost never heard of those people, they

:53:59. > :54:03.just disappeared off the face of the. Why does that happen? One of

:54:04. > :54:07.the reasons for Petra Kvitova not being outstanding as a junior was

:54:08. > :54:10.she was in the Czech Republic but she did not play a lot of junior

:54:11. > :54:17.international events. I remember when she played one of her first ITF

:54:18. > :54:20.events because it was in the Czech Republic and it was a tournament I

:54:21. > :54:25.was in and I remember seeing this 16-year-old wild card smacking the

:54:26. > :54:30.ball so hard. She went out in the first round to my doubles partner

:54:31. > :54:34.that week but you just thought, "Oh, my goodness, this girl hits the ball

:54:35. > :54:42.so hard, she is going to go a long way". It was so long ago but curb

:54:43. > :54:47.was in the draw that week as well. Only people beginning with Kerry

:54:48. > :54:53.were allowed to be in it! It was a limited draw. Seeing her play as a

:54:54. > :54:58.16-year-old, having those huge weapons, was incredible, but nobody

:54:59. > :55:02.would have predicted she would go on to win two grand slam titles at

:55:03. > :55:07.Wimbledon and she could still win plenty more. She's a left-hander tit

:55:08. > :55:14.up there is an interesting article in the official programme about the

:55:15. > :55:19.advantages. It is a column, an opinion piece, about how almost

:55:20. > :55:23.unfair it is in tennis to be left-handed because of the advantage

:55:24. > :55:26.it gives you because less than 10% of the players who play tennis are

:55:27. > :55:30.left-handed so if you are a right-hander, you get so little

:55:31. > :55:34.practice against them, pro rata, against right-handed players, but

:55:35. > :55:36.sometimes when you are playing right-handed, you are sometimes

:55:37. > :55:40.taken aback and as a consequence of that, if you want to really make it

:55:41. > :55:43.in sport and you are left-handed, tennis is the sport you ought to go

:55:44. > :55:48.into because you've got an unfair advantage before you even start. Now

:55:49. > :55:54.you tell me! That's obviously where I went wrong! People always talk

:55:55. > :55:59.about, especially from the vantage court, that left-handed serve, the

:56:00. > :56:04.angle that it gets. The right hand does not have the same going the

:56:05. > :56:07.other way. No, for some reason a right-hander heading on the due

:56:08. > :56:11.score doesn't have the same effect. It's just not as good and as lethal

:56:12. > :56:16.as a left-handed player serving from the other court. I don't know why it

:56:17. > :56:22.shouldn't be. I've always felt left-handed players also have more

:56:23. > :56:25.natural feel on their shots than right-handed players but that could

:56:26. > :56:29.just be meted We are chatting away here but we are going to have some

:56:30. > :56:33.live tennis in just a moment or so because Jo Konta and her opponent

:56:34. > :56:38.from Ukraine will be on court very shortly. It is a lovely afternoon

:56:39. > :56:42.now for playing tennis and also for actually watching it, especially on

:56:43. > :56:46.Centre Court. Last year, my recollection of Eastbourne was that

:56:47. > :56:50.it was a bit mix and match as far as the weather was concerned and there

:56:51. > :56:53.were sometimes when you wanted a fleece and a woolly jumper out there

:56:54. > :56:58.to watch it. Today it is really nice and they've been playing Chris of a

:56:59. > :57:03.cross's Ride Like The Wind to get people feeling like it really is a

:57:04. > :57:10.summer over the tannoy. This is how this section of the draw looks at

:57:11. > :57:13.the moment. Radwanska against Bouchard is a good game for tomorrow

:57:14. > :57:17.and a good game for Bouchard after the last couple of years under the

:57:18. > :57:21.microscope, her ranking falling and people asking what happened to this

:57:22. > :57:24.great new star that was going today the game by storm. It didn't really

:57:25. > :57:26.happen but a really good run again at Eastbourne might get people

:57:27. > :57:35.thinking that she might be on the way back.

:57:36. > :58:11.We could have a good all Italian affair. Here comes Jo Konta's

:58:12. > :58:16.opponent for the afternoon and she had a very good winter day in

:58:17. > :58:21.straight sets against Shuai Zhang of China, Lesia Tsurenko. She is 27

:58:22. > :58:27.years old so she has been around for a while. And here is someone else

:58:28. > :58:33.who has been around for a while but never quite to a reception like this

:58:34. > :58:38.at Eastbourne. And the key thing, of course, is to embrace it, to enjoy

:58:39. > :58:42.it. Enjoyed it, yeah, and I think that's the hardest thing to do when

:58:43. > :58:49.you're desperate to do so well, desperate to perform in front of

:58:50. > :58:53.your home crowd. I suppose the key thing... Oh, she's walked on court

:58:54. > :58:57.and she's forgotten something. I knew I should have brought a rocket

:58:58. > :59:02.with meted top but in days gone by, if you are banished to... If you are

:59:03. > :59:06.at Wimbledon, you're playing on court 13. It is a very different

:59:07. > :59:10.experience to being on Centre Court but you can almost guarantee,

:59:11. > :59:14.providing it is an opponent of some stature, Jo Konta's first match next

:59:15. > :59:17.week is going to be on Centre Court at Wimbledon and suddenly it is

:59:18. > :59:22.like, show us what you've got. You'd hope so. Last year she played a

:59:23. > :59:26.first-round match out on Centre Court and was up against Maria

:59:27. > :59:31.Sharapova. She's been there, done it, knows what it feels like, but

:59:32. > :59:36.this time round, it will be, I guess, roles reversed, everyone

:59:37. > :59:42.expecting Konta to win the match as opposed to her opponent. This is

:59:43. > :59:46.interesting. What has she walked on court without? Have you ever walked

:59:47. > :59:50.on court without something? Like, why have I only got one shoe on?

:59:51. > :59:56.I've walked on court in my running shoes and of my tennis shoes before.

:59:57. > :00:01.As the umpire toss the coin, I thought I ought to change my shoes!

:00:02. > :00:06.I'm not too sure what's going on here but you see these huge tennis

:00:07. > :00:08.bags the players carry around, which weigh an absolute tonne. They seen

:00:09. > :00:12.to have everything in those tennis bags so I'm not quite sure what she

:00:13. > :00:19.seems to have forgotten, unless you just need the loo, last-minute

:00:20. > :00:22.nerves. -- she just needs. She might have some instructions that she

:00:23. > :00:25.keeps surreptitiously hidden in her bag but she doesn't need to hide

:00:26. > :00:28.them because on the women's tour, you can actually get the coaches

:00:29. > :00:32.down to talk to you at various points in the game if things aren't

:00:33. > :00:37.going well. Anyway, are very summery outfit on a summer's afternoon,

:00:38. > :00:40.albeit a little bit patchy. When you walked across from the commentary

:00:41. > :00:45.box to hear, how much of an impact is that having on the game, the

:00:46. > :00:51.wind? Roll huge. Here in Eastbourne, the wind swirls around Centre Court

:00:52. > :00:57.It is expected. You expect wind. You come to Eastbourne and don't expect

:00:58. > :01:04.perfect conditions. It will be something Jo is used to. Presumably

:01:05. > :01:06.when she lives here, does she come and practice here or is there an

:01:07. > :01:14.indoor centre down the road which she uses? Jo, when she's in the UK,

:01:15. > :01:20.practices at national tennis centre most of the time. That is where she

:01:21. > :01:30.will do most of her heading. -- hitting. She must come here

:01:31. > :01:37.occasionally. Her parents lived nearby and are huge supporters of

:01:38. > :01:41.her tennis. When you think about the peripatetic life that she's had,

:01:42. > :01:46.being born in Australia, Hungary and parents, coming to this country, in

:01:47. > :01:49.that kind of environment, it would be very easy to not actually end up

:01:50. > :01:53.focusing on something because your life just takes you here, there and

:01:54. > :01:59.everywhere but all the while, there has been an immense support base for

:02:00. > :02:08.the. ... Yes, and her parents follow her tennis very closely. I remember

:02:09. > :02:13.practising with Jo over the years and her mum or dad or whoever are at

:02:14. > :02:18.the back of the court, chipping in, trying to advise her here and there,

:02:19. > :02:23.getting involved with her tennis. That could be good and bad. Good and

:02:24. > :02:26.bad, and she knows how to manage it herself, better than anyone else,

:02:27. > :02:31.but I know she has a very close relationship with her mum and dad

:02:32. > :02:36.and each to their own. Be honest here, because I remember when it

:02:37. > :02:44.happened with Aljaz Bedene in the last couple of years, when I saw on

:02:45. > :02:50.the BBC website, another player from whatever background, Wenzhou

:02:51. > :02:54.appeared, were there some members of the British tennis set to thought,

:02:55. > :03:02.what is all this about? -- when Jo appeared. But she, as a teenager,

:03:03. > :03:10.based herself in the UK with her parents. The LTA bagged her before

:03:11. > :03:13.she got her British passport so she was always around. I remember

:03:14. > :03:20.practising with Jo for years and even before she got her British

:03:21. > :03:24.passport... You just get on with it. There will have been a few people...

:03:25. > :03:28.Especially people who have their noses put out of joint, who go from

:03:29. > :03:33.being number four and five to number five and six. It makes a difference

:03:34. > :03:37.but she's showing what she can do and I think everyone supports her

:03:38. > :03:42.now. It's going to be very exciting next week. Lets hope she has a good

:03:43. > :03:46.run here because if she can go into Wimbledon in a good run of form, it

:03:47. > :03:50.adds an extra dimensional to Wimbledon next week. It doesn't just

:03:51. > :03:52.become the Murray show, it becomes Jo getting through to the second

:03:53. > :03:58.week and who knows what happens after that. Who knows what can

:03:59. > :04:01.happen? We saw it at the Australian Open and I think a result there

:04:02. > :04:09.together on by surprise. The French Open didn't go her way but we've got

:04:10. > :04:11.a female player who is capable of beating those top players, capable

:04:12. > :04:17.of being involved in the second week of a slam, and it's something to get

:04:18. > :04:22.excited about and hopefully Jo will embrace it, Jo will enjoy it and

:04:23. > :04:28.live up to expectations. Absolutely. The knock up this taking place so

:04:29. > :04:31.we'll let Anne Keothavong had up to the commentary box. You are working

:04:32. > :04:37.overtime today! I'm getting my work-out! Let's have a chat with Sam

:04:38. > :04:44.Smith, who is up in our commentary box. Sam, two years ago, if we'd

:04:45. > :04:47.said Jo Konta was going to be a Grand Slam semifinalist and a top 20

:04:48. > :04:52.player in the world, would you have said, you've got to be joking? I

:04:53. > :04:55.don't the guy would've been quite bad as respectful but I think most

:04:56. > :05:00.people would have said, we are not seeing that, because just because of

:05:01. > :05:04.her results. Throughout her early 20s she was a good junior, not

:05:05. > :05:08.outstanding, and she was a player that could win a match or two in

:05:09. > :05:11.slams, having come through the qualifying, but she seemed to be in

:05:12. > :05:17.this awful place in the rankings, veering between 140 and 90, which is

:05:18. > :05:21.impossible to schedule, and she looked stuck there, and when I

:05:22. > :05:24.watched her play at the US Open a few years ago, she nearly made it

:05:25. > :05:28.through to the third round, played fabulously well. I thought her

:05:29. > :05:32.format was always going to hold her back and the fact that she just

:05:33. > :05:37.seemed to get very uptight and nervous. And over the last 12

:05:38. > :05:44.months, she's conquered that. Forehand is unrecognisable from what

:05:45. > :05:47.it was. Her fitness has improved dramatically. I've always thought

:05:48. > :05:50.she is a really good and strong athlete and mentally, she's put in

:05:51. > :05:54.so much work, so I think we're seeing a totally different player.

:05:55. > :05:58.Unless you had a crystal ball, I don't think you would've thought she

:05:59. > :06:01.would be in the position she is now. And I wonder how she processes it

:06:02. > :06:06.because it is a big change in status. For that don't have

:06:07. > :06:10.happened, did that require a big jump in mindset for her? Maybe I've

:06:11. > :06:14.got to work a bit harder certain aspects of my game? I don't the

:06:15. > :06:18.gritters mindset at all because I ball was felt that she has carried

:06:19. > :06:23.herself like a top player, super disciplined, so meticulous and when

:06:24. > :06:27.you are struggling, because it is a struggle around that ranking,

:06:28. > :06:32.sometimes you are in the main draw, you are in satellites, it is not the

:06:33. > :06:37.most grammar is like. -- glamorous life. You think, is it really all

:06:38. > :06:42.worth it, being this disciplined, this particular is about everything?

:06:43. > :06:46.Jo has carried on as if it was always going to be, she was always

:06:47. > :06:49.going to have a different tennis life, and I think that has been one

:06:50. > :06:54.of the most important thing is, along with training in Spain. I

:06:55. > :06:58.think that's been great for her. Her application has been of someone that

:06:59. > :07:03.has top-10 potential. She is back disciplined, that hard-working.

:07:04. > :07:15.Hywel Key to this rise up the rankings was last year? When you

:07:16. > :07:17.beat Ekaterina Makarova and another player, which is a victory that

:07:18. > :07:23.improves with age, you build a lot of confidence and it is great with

:07:24. > :07:26.hindsight top Bob she went on and won a couple of challenges in

:07:27. > :07:31.Canada, had a great run at the US Open, so it looks like it was very

:07:32. > :07:35.important. Only she will know what it meant to her but I can't think it

:07:36. > :07:41.was insignificant because it seems to be a real marker in the career of

:07:42. > :07:47.Jo Konta. We can pontificate until we are blue in the face and

:07:48. > :07:51.sometimes we have to, about what is significant and what isn't but as a

:07:52. > :07:59.player, you can offer platitudes the whole time about, I genuinely

:08:00. > :08:04.believe I can do this, but until you can actually do it, you don't know

:08:05. > :08:08.if you can do it on beating Muguruza last year was a moment when you

:08:09. > :08:11.thought, I've heard of her and she's beaten her well and suddenly things

:08:12. > :08:16.just change of interview to talk Things happen very quickly. She's

:08:17. > :08:19.got a tough match here. I watched Tsurenko in her first round this

:08:20. > :08:27.morning, hitting the ball fabulously well. Well, Sam is on her own for a

:08:28. > :08:29.moment but Anne Keothavong will get there shortly. The British number

:08:30. > :08:42.one in action today. COMMENTATOR: Lesia Tsurenko ranked

:08:43. > :08:44.at 42 in the world, beat Shannon Schweiger of China a few hours ago

:08:45. > :08:58.now. She hasn't had the best of years.

:08:59. > :09:02.She went upfront just outside the world's top 100 to just inside the

:09:03. > :09:29.world's top 30 and has struggled for victories on tour this year.

:09:30. > :09:35.Tsurenko is a player that has improved her fitness quite

:09:36. > :09:38.dramatically over the last few seasons but whenever we commented on

:09:39. > :09:42.her matches, the one thing you have to always mention, and it really

:09:43. > :09:51.stands out, if she only really took tennis seriously at age 17. Started

:09:52. > :09:56.to play mainly for fun, between 14 and 17, but only really applied

:09:57. > :10:51.herself in her late teens. This is extraordinary.

:10:52. > :10:57.Well-known for having a fabulous backhand. Sometimes struggles to

:10:58. > :10:59.generate her own pace and can sit deep behind the baseline but has a

:11:00. > :11:22.fine game overall. And that is the side that Konta

:11:23. > :11:26.should be targeting. That is her forehand that on her bad days can be

:11:27. > :12:06.erratic. Konta would love to break here.

:12:07. > :12:26.Altec smack correction. -- out. Correction. A correction and it did

:12:27. > :12:43.look good at first look. An ideal opening game on this first

:12:44. > :12:48.game for Lesia Tsurenko. And any, you should go back on the court, you

:12:49. > :12:56.are covering the ground with such grace and swiftness! You sound so

:12:57. > :13:01.impressed. Totally. I would take double the time. But Tsurenko, we

:13:02. > :13:07.will watching her this morning at 11am and she looked to be striking

:13:08. > :13:12.the ball really well. She was. She got herself into a good position and

:13:13. > :13:19.struggled to close it out in the second set. She was 6-1, 5-2 up. But

:13:20. > :13:21.she managed to close out the second set in a tie-break. She can get a

:13:22. > :14:15.little tight. these two have met on one previous

:14:16. > :14:21.occasion, three years ago. But at the start of that year, Tsurenko

:14:22. > :14:27.winning 7-5 in the deciding set and went on to have a really great run

:14:28. > :14:34.that week. They did play against each other last year in Fed cup as

:14:35. > :14:41.well. In Budapest. Tsurenko the winner there in straight sets. So

:14:42. > :14:47.this is a tricky matchup for Konta even though she is ranked 18 in the

:14:48. > :15:31.world. And the 11th seed here in Eastbourne.

:15:32. > :15:47.One of two Spanish coaches employed by Jo.

:15:48. > :15:59.An important game for Konta. Both women safely aboard in the second

:16:00. > :16:06.round match. The winner will play Petra Kvitova who won first up on

:16:07. > :16:55.Centre Court today. A very tough draw, wherever you look.

:16:56. > :17:06.Oh, beautifully done. She made that look a lot easier than it was. When

:17:07. > :17:12.I watch her play, maybe it is the backhand, she reminds me, maybe

:17:13. > :17:17.looks like her as well, but reminds me of Elena Vesnina, champion here a

:17:18. > :17:31.few years ago. You're not seeing it, are you, Annie?

:17:32. > :17:43.There are similarities in the way they look but she hit the ball very

:17:44. > :17:52.flat. As he you mean. Help me out here, Annie. Vesnina without the

:17:53. > :18:09.grant. Yes, she is very quiet, Lesia.

:18:10. > :18:17.What has Jo got to watch out for? The Tsurenko backhand? Also,

:18:18. > :18:31.Tsurenko moves well around the court.

:18:32. > :18:52.And her first serve should not be underestimated.

:18:53. > :19:01.Good shot from Konta. Stay down low. It threw the ball. -- stayed through

:19:02. > :19:35.the ball. A good hold from the Ukrainian. And

:19:36. > :19:40.looking comfortable. Her debut here at Eastbourne and on the Centre

:19:41. > :19:47.Court. She had a great year last year, almost ranked outside the top

:19:48. > :19:50.30 after being ranked just inside the top 100 at the start of the

:19:51. > :19:56.year. What has made the difference with her? 'S belief. For some

:19:57. > :20:01.delight to rank, she has been on tour for a number of years. I like

:20:02. > :20:08.the way she is tucking her racket up, like she's putting them to bed!

:20:09. > :20:15.Very odd, I've never seen a player do that. But you don't want too much

:20:16. > :20:20.sun on your racket. I thought they were also a statically sealed right

:20:21. > :20:25.now or am I thinking there is more technology than there really is? Oh,

:20:26. > :20:31.it's being touted by the umpire, being put to bed! Looks comfortable

:20:32. > :20:37.there, doesn't it? I guess that is one way to look after your rackets.

:20:38. > :20:43.A bit extreme. But what was the improvement all about last year,

:20:44. > :20:48.because she's 27 now? I think it is belief, more than anything. For any

:20:49. > :20:53.player. She has been out on tour for a number of years. I think she was

:20:54. > :20:58.just able to back herself. The tennis has always been there. She is

:20:59. > :21:03.in better shape than she used to be these days. She is much fitter and

:21:04. > :21:06.quicker around the court. That has been a big improvement. She backs

:21:07. > :21:37.herself. I think that is key. You know, when you put yourself on

:21:38. > :21:41.the line and compete week in, week out, get used to players around you,

:21:42. > :21:47.you feel like you belong and you start playing like you belong.

:21:48. > :22:02.Konta had such a good year last year, with big wins before losing to

:22:03. > :22:02.Belinda Bencic, the eventual champion, in the quarterfinals,

:22:03. > :22:35.having taken the first set. Yes, right on the line! This is

:22:36. > :22:41.going to be a difficult encounter and I wonder where Jo's confidence

:22:42. > :22:46.is? It has not been a particularly good grass court season for her.

:22:47. > :22:53.Second round exit in Nottingham and in Birmingham and also first round

:22:54. > :22:57.at Roland Garros, where she left to a player to you we were surprised

:22:58. > :23:03.she lost. Just needs to get back to winning ways. -- to whom we were

:23:04. > :24:00.surprised. Quite a clever shot there from

:24:01. > :24:10.Tsurenko, took all the pace of it. Got the ball to dip low. Tsurenko

:24:11. > :24:13.looking rather at home here, this is posing a few problems and Konta

:24:14. > :24:46.having to face break point. These two had very different days

:24:47. > :24:52.yesterday. Tsurenko very much watching the rain, hoping to get on

:24:53. > :25:33.court. Konta, a lot of media commitments.

:25:34. > :25:52.Come on! The fitness trainer to the left of your picture, Konta's coach.

:25:53. > :26:17.She used to do a lot of work with you. Yes.

:26:18. > :26:33.Really tense opening four games. Konta doing very well to hold there.

:26:34. > :26:37.Well, it's an afternoon that is lovely and sunny at Eastbourne but

:26:38. > :26:40.it is time for the industrial strength hairspray, they are playing

:26:41. > :26:46.enabling the tunnel at the moment! Not easy at all. -- they are playing

:26:47. > :27:16.in a wind tunnel. Got to give yourself bigger margins

:27:17. > :27:22.in these conditions, big targets. You aim for the central channel of

:27:23. > :28:00.the court! Yes! And then allow the wind to take it wherever.

:28:01. > :28:09.I don't know about you, Annie, I don't completely trust the swing

:28:10. > :28:13.path on that forehand. It is by far the weakest shot. And when it does

:28:14. > :28:17.get a little close and tense, you see her looking to take her backhand

:28:18. > :28:24.from the middle of the court as much as possible. A side she is much more

:28:25. > :28:56.comfortable on. It's a more reliable win, as well. -- wing as well.

:28:57. > :29:19.Yes, didn't really adjust her feet, there. And she has played her way

:29:20. > :29:21.into some trouble and now it is Konta with a chance to get the early

:29:22. > :30:36.break. Konta is not sure, but a look at her

:30:37. > :30:40.camp and elected not to challenge. It looks like Tsurenko won the

:30:41. > :30:50.coach, but going along pretty well here. She wants her racket, we are

:30:51. > :30:57.just seeing. A late we string. So, if you work on two, -- if you were

:30:58. > :31:02.Konta, how would you take on Tsurenko in the city conditions? She

:31:03. > :31:06.still has to give herself big targets. She knows what to expect

:31:07. > :31:09.from Tsurenko and she will be aware the forehand wing is the weaker wing

:31:10. > :31:15.and where she will have more opportunities to play more

:31:16. > :31:21.aggressively. If she attacked that side she is more likely to get a

:31:22. > :31:27.shorter ball. But I think for Jo out here, it is all about her. If she

:31:28. > :31:31.does what is in her control very well, it big first serve, she makes

:31:32. > :31:35.herself tough to break and then on the return games, have a go. She was

:31:36. > :31:41.able to create opportunities in that last game. Understandably, as you

:31:42. > :31:46.know her really well, you have practised with her quite a lot, she

:31:47. > :31:51.looks quite tense. But that is Jo for you. In terms of how she

:31:52. > :31:57.prepares, she is one of the most meticulous tennis players I know.

:31:58. > :32:04.She is, she is very OCD about a lot of things. She would take that as a

:32:05. > :32:13.compliment, wouldn't she? I don't doubt she would have prepared very

:32:14. > :32:17.well. But it is all about controlling the nerves, which is the

:32:18. > :32:23.toughest thing for her to do. When she can, she produces fabulous

:32:24. > :32:24.tennis. We on serve here. The second round match winner to play Petra

:32:25. > :33:11.Kvitova. Give her time on that forehand and

:33:12. > :33:16.she will give it a good crack. She is also the better at the southern

:33:17. > :33:20.end, where the wind is behind you and if you get the wind behind you,

:33:21. > :34:28.very difficult to defend against. Well, she talked about staying in

:34:29. > :34:33.her own bubble and not letting crowd support getting into her zone. She

:34:34. > :35:08.could do with it here. Once again, break point on serve.

:35:09. > :36:07.come on! UMPIRE: Deuce! It's not like in

:36:08. > :36:16.Germany or in France when the home crowd sensed their play a struggling

:36:17. > :36:20.a little and they do race slow handclap and let their player know

:36:21. > :36:36.what's going on. Here, it's not more polite. Oh, that might need a little

:36:37. > :36:46.look at. A challenge for the call, it was called out.

:36:47. > :36:54.A long way from our commentary box, the far end. Two challenges

:36:55. > :37:33.remaining. The wind really has picked up this

:37:34. > :37:40.afternoon. It's horrid wind, because suddenly it will drop for half a

:37:41. > :37:43.minute and then it will gust up. It just bounces off the stands and

:37:44. > :37:45.swirls around. You never know what you are going to get. Confusing

:37:46. > :38:11.wind. That is a gritty holder from the

:38:12. > :39:21.British number one. Konta just doing enough in that last

:39:22. > :40:23.game to draw the errors from Tsurenko.

:40:24. > :41:12.Cap next -- great control from Konta. Not the easiest control to

:41:13. > :41:25.find from that part of the court, she managed it.

:41:26. > :42:09.Still with serve in the second set, Tsurenko. We were chatting about how

:42:10. > :42:16.she didn't take tennis seriously until she was 17. A lot of players

:42:17. > :42:21.take it seriously from the age of seven! She is still very young in

:42:22. > :42:26.tennis years. How can you do that these days? Well, she is showing the

:42:27. > :42:30.rest of us that it is possible and you don't have to be on a full-time

:42:31. > :42:36.schedule by the age of ten to succeed as a tennis player. There is

:42:37. > :42:40.no right or wrong way to come through and up the tennis ranks.

:42:41. > :42:45.What works for one player will not work for another. You know, there is

:42:46. > :42:50.a lot of pressure on young kids these days, who do show an interest

:42:51. > :42:55.in becoming a professional tennis player to give up full-time

:42:56. > :42:59.education and training for five hours a day from such a young age,

:43:00. > :43:06.which I don't think is actually the right thing to do. I think if you

:43:07. > :43:15.can, you should stay at school until the age of 16, at least, try and,

:43:16. > :43:20.you know, base yourself at home for as long as possible, if it is

:43:21. > :43:26.possible, to have the right coaches and the right practice partners

:43:27. > :43:32.around to develop your game. I just think that provides you with much

:43:33. > :43:37.better stability. Some of these players now have online schooling or

:43:38. > :43:43.travelling tutors. It is easier to read and have that sort of life.

:43:44. > :44:35.Contact with the new ball certainly has her work cut out here. -- Konta.

:44:36. > :45:07.One of her favourite shots to play, that backhand up the line.

:45:08. > :45:16.Not the most fluent match, it is rather hit and miss, understandable

:45:17. > :45:22.in these conditions. A lot of nerves out there as well.

:45:23. > :45:33.Dropped, I'm afraid. Where is that steward today? He caught a beauty at

:45:34. > :46:01.Samantha Stosur's... APPLAUSE

:46:02. > :46:05.Well, they have been out here in this second round match for just

:46:06. > :46:08.over half an hour. Maybe Joe and just starting to

:46:09. > :46:36.loosen off and burn off some of those nerves. -- maybe Jo.

:46:37. > :46:49.Oh! That was the obvious short for Tsurenko to play. Konta very quick

:46:50. > :46:58.up to the short one. Very close to crushing forwards into the net. Had

:46:59. > :48:16.to steady herself there. Just a bit too much for the British number one.

:48:17. > :48:24.Frustrating for Konta, she has only had one in the fifth game of this

:48:25. > :48:33.opening set, had to face quite a few on her serve.

:48:34. > :48:45.And Tsurenko managing rather well here. Polite applause from the

:48:46. > :48:49.stands. It is funny when you come to Eastbourne and you're playing and

:48:50. > :48:54.coming down here for commentary, you see a lot of the same faces. They

:48:55. > :48:58.are very loyal, they know their players. Ticket sales, yesterday was

:48:59. > :49:03.terrible with the weather but as soon as the sun comes out, Centre

:49:04. > :49:08.Court is almost full now, apart from the odd little corner in the shade.

:49:09. > :49:11.As a tournament, it is well supported by the locals. They like

:49:12. > :49:17.their tennis here but they are probably the most polite crowd you

:49:18. > :49:22.will ever find. You might get the odd come on, Jo at some point. What

:49:23. > :49:27.do you think about her saying she was not going to allow the fact her

:49:28. > :49:32.parents live a couple of miles from here and she is very much, has spent

:49:33. > :49:38.a lot of her teenage years in Eastbourne, she is seen as a local

:49:39. > :49:43.girl despite being brought up on the northern beaches of Sydney, until

:49:44. > :49:49.she was 14, and her family moved everyone here, but she said she will

:49:50. > :49:55.stay in the bubble, she will not let lost support the PSF? Should she

:49:56. > :49:58.embrace it a little more? I don't think it would do any harm but

:49:59. > :50:04.leading thinkers that with -- that is really her personality. She is

:50:05. > :50:08.learning to just give people a bit more of her personality more. But it

:50:09. > :50:16.is not something that comes naturally to her. She is quirky, I

:50:17. > :50:22.can vouch for that. We are all quirky! You, more than just a bit!

:50:23. > :52:32.So, Konta here serving to stay in this opening set.

:52:33. > :52:39.Usually has a very reliable second serve, one of the best on the

:52:40. > :52:46.women's tour, was in fine form down in Australia at Melbourne Park. That

:52:47. > :52:58.was a huge part of her run to the semifinals.

:52:59. > :53:04.She has done an enormous amount of work over the last couple of years

:53:05. > :53:06.with a sports psychologist and you can almost see her going through her

:53:07. > :53:27.process, because she is nervous. Yes, relief to get through that

:53:28. > :54:31.game. They have gotten very handy players,

:54:32. > :54:42.they always produce a few... Bondarenko... They could have had

:54:43. > :54:50.Elena Vesnina, because she was born in that part of the world. Has

:54:51. > :54:57.chosen to represent Russia. Sochi is her home town these days. I think

:54:58. > :54:59.she moved there when she was quite young, when it was still part of the

:55:00. > :55:13.Soviet Union. The perfect shot from Konta to play,

:55:14. > :55:18.hard and deep into the Tsurenko forehand. That is exactly what

:55:19. > :55:40.you're talking about, when it gets tight, that forehand looks fragile.

:55:41. > :55:54.Good pressure from Tsurenko. The court looks very soft for her and

:55:55. > :56:02.the ball isn't coming through at all. But there are places where it

:56:03. > :56:03.is still a bit lush. Very much so. It will harden up as we go through

:56:04. > :56:27.this week. Again, that forehand... Right on

:56:28. > :56:34.power line. -- on our line. The wind looks as if it is blowing from left

:56:35. > :56:41.to right of your picture. The ball would have just drifted over. On

:56:42. > :56:46.another day, it would have been a couple of inches inside. But a great

:56:47. > :57:03.opportunity here for Konta. Second serve return. A careless

:57:04. > :58:33.error therefore Konta. There it is again. Deep into the

:58:34. > :58:39.Tsurenko forehand. There is an irony in that, because for many years, it

:58:40. > :58:47.would be players going into Jo's forehand hard and fast and getting

:58:48. > :58:55.the error. The Konta forehand is something that has improved, out of

:58:56. > :58:58.sight. It is not the same shot. Johanna Konta is not the tennis

:58:59. > :59:34.player I remember! Tsurenko rather labouring through

:59:35. > :59:36.this game, and she is at what we feel is the good end, with the wind

:59:37. > :59:59.behind her. When you're feeling nervous and a

:00:00. > :00:02.little uptight, the first thing that goes is your footwork, and Konta

:00:03. > :00:47.just not getting up to that ball in that last point.

:00:48. > :00:59.Oh! My goodness. I just wonder if she caught Konta moving... And also,

:01:00. > :01:07.the previous point where she missed a forehand, by some distance. That

:01:08. > :01:09.would have also had an effect. Big support there from the fans. They

:01:10. > :01:33.sense this is important. Whoever is doing the school graphic

:01:34. > :01:43.has got a little carried away. It is actually 5-5 at the moment. Another

:01:44. > :02:08.break point. That forehand really breaking down from Tsurenko.

:02:09. > :02:15.Better margin, better control that time of the forehand from Tsurenko.

:02:16. > :02:26.But it was the server setup that short ball, very smart serve into

:02:27. > :02:35.Konta's body. Must be coming up to, what, and eight of nine minute game.

:02:36. > :04:19.Once again, second serve return. Break point.

:04:20. > :04:36.Oh! Well, they are living and breathing every shot that Jo please.

:04:37. > :04:41.She has done a great job of building pressure in this game. -- Jo plays.

:04:42. > :05:22.Still hasn't got the breakthrough after so many chances.

:05:23. > :05:32.That was a much better return from Konta, that was what she needed when

:05:33. > :05:40.she had break point opportunities. That is what it is easy to think,

:05:41. > :05:41.why didn't I do that before? But Jo was ever dog-eared, sticking in,

:05:42. > :06:01.back to deuce. -- dogged. Very decisive and matter of fact on

:06:02. > :06:15.that forehand from Tsurenko. Surprising, given some of the

:06:16. > :06:32.mistakes he has made in this game. She has.

:06:33. > :06:39.Does incredibly well, Lesia Tsurenko. Hold on despite all those

:06:40. > :06:48.break points. They have been on court for just

:06:49. > :07:05.under an hour. I can't translate what he's telling

:07:06. > :07:16.her... It has been a topsy-turvy affair, both players have other

:07:17. > :07:22.opportunities. The conditions haven't been easy as well. The wind

:07:23. > :07:37.has been making it awkward for both women held there. You have to admire

:07:38. > :07:45.their discipline as well. You cannot expect of a perfect tennis out here.

:07:46. > :07:48.But for Konta, she has had her opportunity, and number of break

:07:49. > :07:52.point opportunities, the number of second serve returns she has missed,

:07:53. > :07:58.and she still looks fairly tentative out there, to me. She doesn't look

:07:59. > :08:03.like she is able to relax just yet. And just play with a bit more

:08:04. > :08:07.freedom, which she needs to, if she is to make a real impact in this

:08:08. > :08:15.match. Up against a player she hasn't beaten before. It would be

:08:16. > :08:20.great to see if Jo can release herself and once again, she finds

:08:21. > :10:02.herself trying to serve to stay in this very long opening set.

:10:03. > :10:11.Both women struggling with their ball tosses, normally so secure

:10:12. > :10:28.behind a second serve, gets a lot of sheep and work on it. -- shape.

:10:29. > :10:38.That was a great response from Konta.

:10:39. > :10:45.So, 12 games played, not a single break in them but lots of break

:10:46. > :10:55.points. Konta with a very good record this

:10:56. > :11:45.season. Oh, superb! But has she made it? I

:11:46. > :11:53.have to say poor guy has had a rest on the Centre Court today. --

:11:54. > :11:56.Hawk-Eye. On most of the matches, this is the fourth of the day. This

:11:57. > :12:48.is a good one from Tsurenko. Beautifully done. Superb from Konta!

:12:49. > :13:03.And maybe now, just starting to relax out here. Konta's tie-break

:13:04. > :13:40.record this year won five, lost two. You take that, wouldn't you? Yes.

:13:41. > :13:47.Very smart return, taking the pace off, forcing Tsurenko to come up

:13:48. > :13:53.with something herself. A clever shot to play to the Tsurenko

:13:54. > :13:57.forehand. Give her no pace. She doesn't like generating her own. And

:13:58. > :14:03.it is a tough thing to do on the grass, the ball staying down very

:14:04. > :14:05.low. Yes, take advantage of the soft courts. They will not be like that

:14:06. > :14:37.for much longer. What you can say about Jo Konta is

:14:38. > :14:41.that she has been persistent out here. She hasn't got too

:14:42. > :14:46.disappointed when she hasn't converted on so many break point

:14:47. > :14:52.opportunities. She might be rewarded here. She has had to play catch up

:14:53. > :16:10.the whole set, serving second. She can drive this tie-break now.

:16:11. > :16:27.And contour has just been -- and Konta has just been rock solid in

:16:28. > :16:32.the tie-break. She has had such a great record this season in

:16:33. > :16:34.tie-breaks. It has been a real labour of love, 67 minutes, four

:16:35. > :17:01.break points. The ball is taking a long time to

:17:02. > :17:37.get down to the other end. -- the balls.

:17:38. > :18:00.It's OK. Still got a couple of set points in her pocket.

:18:01. > :18:09.Oh, relief for everyone and Britain's number one as Konta take

:18:10. > :18:16.the opening set by 7-5 on the tie-breaker.

:18:17. > :18:22.STUDIO: That's great, a full house as the

:18:23. > :18:26.British number one take the set. It big upset with seeded Roberta Vinci

:18:27. > :18:32.going out to Ekaterina Makarova of Russia. That will make our British

:18:33. > :18:38.Tara Moore feel better because she lost two very yesterday. They have

:18:39. > :18:44.been mixed fortunes for two of our guys at Nottingham. A good win for

:18:45. > :18:52.Dan Evans. We are back tomorrow at ten past

:18:53. > :19:07.one. Let's hope that if Jo Konta can win

:19:08. > :19:12.this, she will be playing Petra Kvitova. And we should mention that

:19:13. > :19:17.Northern Ireland versus Germany is on BBC One at the moment. When this

:19:18. > :19:23.match leaves us here on BBC Two, you can still follow it on the Internet

:19:24. > :19:28.and also on connected TV. Which we know you have.

:19:29. > :19:36.COMMENTATOR: Whether you like or disapprove of

:19:37. > :19:44.this on court coaching, it's a huge relief for Jo to get her coaching.

:19:45. > :19:53.Let's listen in. I mean, I know there are some balls bouncing a bit

:19:54. > :19:57.shorter but it is pushing it back. Yes, if you find yourself in a

:19:58. > :20:02.vision like that, don't be afraid of missing because you have to hit a

:20:03. > :20:06.passing shot. Also you did a good job trying to bring her into the net

:20:07. > :20:11.with short balls or top shots. Stay with that.

:20:12. > :20:15.COMMENTATOR: Well, Jo is the last lead to

:20:16. > :20:22.complain about everything but bearing out what you have been

:20:23. > :20:29.saying tactically. Always very impressed with her coach when he has

:20:30. > :20:32.come on court. -- Jo is the last player to complain. Let's see how

:20:33. > :20:50.she goes now. Second set. Her coach, whenever he comes on for

:20:51. > :21:07.a pep talk, he's always very clear and precise.

:21:08. > :21:18.For Konta, in these conditions, she has to be decisive and make up our

:21:19. > :21:20.mind what she wants to do and go with it. You can't doubt yourself

:21:21. > :21:43.out there. A huge weight will have been lifted

:21:44. > :21:49.off her shoulders, having got that first set under her belt. Yes, just

:21:50. > :22:03.has to be careful she doesn't have a let down here. 15-30.

:22:04. > :22:21.A shot you see Konta play more often these days. There is definitely more

:22:22. > :22:25.variety in her game. That is one of the reasons why we have seen her

:22:26. > :23:00.improved so much and shoot up the rankings.

:23:01. > :23:12.If you are going to approach against Tsurenko, you have got to go into

:23:13. > :23:17.her forehand. Going into her strength... Tsurenko with the chance

:23:18. > :24:03.to begin the fight back here. Well that call has been challenged

:24:04. > :24:16.straightaway. Sorrento seems convinced it was either long or wide

:24:17. > :24:23.of the tramlines. -- Tsurenko. And it has caught the line, it's in!

:24:24. > :24:26.Just feels like such an important game for Konta, to keep the momentum

:24:27. > :24:44.of that opening set up. STUDIO:

:24:45. > :24:49.That may have been a big moment, but that is where we will have to leave

:24:50. > :24:53.things on BBC Two. But you can say with this match online and on

:24:54. > :24:58.connected TVs. Let's hope that Jo can carry on with her form. And the

:24:59. > :25:00.programme tomorrow starts at 1:10pm. From a
