:00:39. > :00:44.Today's big match, twice Wimbledon champion against the British number
:00:45. > :00:51.one. Right left-hand. Holding on desperately to her place in the
:00:52. > :00:54.world's elite, scorching up the world rankings. It is Johanna Konta
:00:55. > :01:03.against Petra Kvitova, but who will be the Special K today?
:01:04. > :01:23.Or some power from Petra. Kvitova survives. I love playing on the
:01:24. > :01:30.grass. Superb from Konta. Just the opening win for Britain's 11.
:01:31. > :01:34.Looking forward to the opportunity, hopefully we will give you guys a
:01:35. > :01:40.good match. Good afternoon from Devonshire Park where sadly it has
:01:41. > :01:43.been raining, surprise surprise. But after a delayed start, we do have
:01:44. > :01:49.played, and we will be going live to our first match in a moment's time.
:01:50. > :01:52.The loneliness of the long-distance spectator, don't you just wish you
:01:53. > :01:56.had taken out a number other franchise in this rain? We have a
:01:57. > :02:01.nondescript sky, but a far from nondescript line-up for you. Monica
:02:02. > :02:06.Puig against Caroline Wozniacki is on court at the moment, we will show
:02:07. > :02:16.you that shortly. Then Radwanska against Bouchard, and our main focus
:02:17. > :02:22.today is an bit of against Johanna Konta on Centre Court this
:02:23. > :02:25.afternoon. The forecast for tomorrow is simply horrendous, although on
:02:26. > :02:28.Friday on Saturday it is glorious, so we should finish on time as we
:02:29. > :02:32.head towards Monday and the opening day of Wimbledon, and the seeds have
:02:33. > :02:35.been announced at the last hour, with Serena Williams not
:02:36. > :02:44.surprisingly topping the bill in the women's draw. Garbine Muguruza is
:02:45. > :02:49.second. Petra Kvitova is now outside the world's top ten where she has
:02:50. > :03:00.been a fixture for so many years. On the second page, Jo Konta is seeded
:03:01. > :03:06.17, the best British seat since Jo Durie in 1984. In the men's draw,
:03:07. > :03:09.Andy Murray is at number two, but the main thing about the menstrual
:03:10. > :03:13.is that the Wimbledon committee have exercised their right to manoeuvre
:03:14. > :03:17.the rankings a bit because of the grass peculiarities, which means
:03:18. > :03:21.that Richard Gasquet moves from ten in the world to seven after his
:03:22. > :03:25.performance last year when he got to the semifinals. Somebody else who
:03:26. > :03:30.goes up is marrying Cilic, who is 13th in the world rankings but is
:03:31. > :03:34.seeded nine, and Nick Kyrgios who is outside the world 'stop 16 is seeded
:03:35. > :03:40.15 because of his performance on the grass. So, more immediately, what
:03:41. > :03:50.have we got today? This is how the draw looks at Eastbourne, and we are
:03:51. > :03:55.down to the last 16. It has been ridiculously erratic in terms of the
:03:56. > :03:59.variation in form. Onto the second page, a lot of less familiar names,
:04:00. > :04:03.and in fact of the 16 players left in the draw at the only five are
:04:04. > :04:07.seeds, and it is not inconceivable that we could you down to just one
:04:08. > :04:12.seed in the quarterfinals when we get to tomorrow. And that will be
:04:13. > :04:16.Konta or Kvitova, because both of them are seeded here. So let's go
:04:17. > :04:21.live to the match between two unseeded players, Monica Puig and
:04:22. > :04:25.Caroline Wozniacki. This match should have started at 11, but it
:04:26. > :04:29.began 20 minutes or so ago, so they are behind schedule. Commentary from
:04:30. > :04:54.Anne Keothavong and Sam Smith. ANNE KEOTHAVONG: they have started
:04:55. > :05:00.at quite a pace here. Monica Puig got off to the better start,
:05:01. > :05:01.breaking the serve of Wozniacki. But Wozniacki, the former champion,
:05:02. > :05:23.hanging on here. And Puig, currently ranked at 43 in
:05:24. > :05:25.the world, ranked 20th in the world recently, really taking it to
:05:26. > :05:49.Wozniacki. Yes, Monica Puig is a cracking young
:05:50. > :05:52.player, absolutely fearless. It doesn't matter what surface she
:05:53. > :05:54.plays on, she always has that aggressive mindset. Wozniacki
:05:55. > :06:16.digging deep here. That is a real shame, because she
:06:17. > :06:28.made such a good start. UMPIRE: New balls, please.
:06:29. > :06:35.It will be fascinating to see this week what sort of Caroline Wozniacki
:06:36. > :06:59.we will have. She has missed a couple of months through injury.
:07:00. > :07:11.Monica from Puerto Rico, but based in America.
:07:12. > :07:56.S that was a lot of information there. He is still going! She does
:07:57. > :08:01.need some help after such a good start, but it is Wozniacki now down
:08:02. > :08:24.the early break, up a break and with the new balls.
:08:25. > :08:30.Always been a fan of this tournament. Champion back in 2009,
:08:31. > :08:37.and additionally three times a semifinalist here.
:08:38. > :08:49.Her choice of cuisine last night was Thai, because all of the restaurants
:08:50. > :08:58.are in walking distance. A lot of people go to that
:08:59. > :09:01.restaurant, it is popular. Wozniacki was there as well. They are friends,
:09:02. > :09:35.they hang out a lot. Very strange to see the Dane not
:09:36. > :09:56.seeded at this event, currently ranked at 37 in the world.
:09:57. > :10:03.She will be a dangerous floater in the draw for Wimbledon once the draw
:10:04. > :10:08.comes out, Caroline Wozniacki. She won't be seeded at the
:10:09. > :10:11.Championships. Yes, real problems this year, started off the year
:10:12. > :10:15.inside the world's top 20, but all those problems with her right ankle
:10:16. > :10:25.course to to miss a couple of months.
:10:26. > :10:33.Yes, sprained her right ankle start of April, so didn't compete at all
:10:34. > :10:35.during the clay-court season. Made her return in Nottingham on the
:10:36. > :11:30.grass is ago. Wozniacki doing a great job
:11:31. > :11:36.absorbing the pace from Puig here. Redirecting the play. Something we
:11:37. > :11:40.have watched and seen her done for so many years, worked hard in this
:11:41. > :11:44.set to get into this position, and Puig really from playing the better
:11:45. > :11:45.tennis of the two, and leading by a break, finds herself serving to stay
:11:46. > :12:43.in it now. Really does give it a thump. Her
:12:44. > :13:01.mother, when she was born, named her after Monica Seles.
:13:02. > :13:42.APPLAUSE It is that bread-and-butter shot,
:13:43. > :13:44.that backhand. You got Wickmayer how low she stays and how well she stays
:13:45. > :14:01.through that shot, with her swing. APPLAUSE
:14:02. > :14:06.Well, a packed house here at Devonshire Park on the Centre Court,
:14:07. > :14:11.really enjoying a fabulous opening match after having to wait around. I
:14:12. > :14:54.hear that tickets completely sold out for both the show courts today.
:14:55. > :15:19.No holding back on that second serve. Even though she was named
:15:20. > :15:23.after Monica Seles, her idol was Jennifer Capriati, and whatever you
:15:24. > :15:26.think, both those players gave the ball a hefty whack, didn't they? And
:15:27. > :15:37.she is following very much in the same vein, really exciting to what.
:15:38. > :15:48.Does really well to hang on. UMPIRE:, game, Miss Puig. Ms
:15:49. > :15:53.Wozniacki leads by five games to four. She has had an interesting
:15:54. > :15:58.development, she was a good junior and made the finals of both the US
:15:59. > :16:08.Open and Roland Garros. First onto the tour, got up to the top 50, and
:16:09. > :16:12.then it was like, a few things went wrong, she dropped outside the top
:16:13. > :16:17.100 and almost had to rebuild again. Do you think she is stronger for
:16:18. > :16:21.that? I believe she is. She is only 22 years of age, and quite often you
:16:22. > :16:24.see that with a number of young players, particularly players who
:16:25. > :16:28.have been successful as juniors. They burst onto the scene when they
:16:29. > :16:31.hit the pro game, there is really no pressure whatsoever and they can go
:16:32. > :16:37.out to play with lots of freedom, the other players are not so aware
:16:38. > :16:41.of them, and their game style, and often that first or second year on
:16:42. > :16:47.tour is one of their best. But a good test is backing all of that up,
:16:48. > :16:52.defending those points, building and making improvements in their games,
:16:53. > :16:55.which is the biggest test, and she has had to do that. She has gone
:16:56. > :17:04.back to the drawing board, and she is a better player for it. She
:17:05. > :17:08.started 2016 ranked just in time the world's top 100, Monica Puig, and
:17:09. > :17:12.now she is back inside the world's top 50, and she had a great start to
:17:13. > :17:18.the year, qualifying in Sydney just before the Australian Open. Yes, a
:17:19. > :17:24.very different year to Wozniacki, who even before she got injured were
:17:25. > :17:28.struggling for wins. But as dogged and determined as ever, she loves it
:17:29. > :17:31.here at Eastbourne, it would be a great way to reboot her 2016.
:17:32. > :18:30.Serving over this opening set. It's just got a little behind her
:18:31. > :18:31.after all that work, and that is what Wozniacki does. She makes you
:18:32. > :19:19.play one more ball. UMPIRE: Miss Puig has challenged the
:19:20. > :19:24.ball on the right side. The ball was called out.
:19:25. > :19:35.Well, the flight looked OK. It is not in a terribly good position for
:19:36. > :19:38.our commentary box. I'm not sure if it was the linesman? That was a
:19:39. > :19:44.brilliant call. UMPIRE: The call stands. It brings
:19:45. > :19:56.up after 49 minutes of excellent play, three set points.
:19:57. > :20:07.UMPIRE: Game and first set, Ms Wozniacki. What a great way to open
:20:08. > :20:16.the game here at Devonshire Park. It is Wozniacki who takes the first
:20:17. > :20:22.set, 6-4. I'm sure there will be a lot of people writing off Caroline.
:20:23. > :20:26.I don't think you are one, and Edin think any of the players would, do
:20:27. > :20:30.you? I don't think anyone would enjoy playing her in the first round
:20:31. > :20:35.at Wimbledon. You are talking about a Grand Slam finalist here, former
:20:36. > :20:39.world number one, still a great competitor, she shows a lot of
:20:40. > :20:42.desire out there, and she still wants it, she still feels like she
:20:43. > :20:51.has got something to prove. Whether we will see her as world number one
:20:52. > :20:55.again are or a Grand Slam finalist, I'm not so sure, I think in some
:20:56. > :20:57.ways we have seen the best of Caroline Wozniacki, but that is not
:20:58. > :21:04.to say that she still isn't capable of causing a big upset and going
:21:05. > :21:07.deep into the Tour de France. It was only a couple of years ago that she
:21:08. > :21:10.was a finalist at the US Open, that wonderful match with Serena
:21:11. > :21:19.Williams, and had a great end to 2014. The form went a little awry.
:21:20. > :21:23.And obviously with the right ankle, there was also issues with the left
:21:24. > :21:28.knee earlier this year. That body has run a lot of miles, on and off
:21:29. > :21:33.the court. You talk about her being hungry, she has hired a new coach
:21:34. > :21:40.consultant to go alongside her father who has always been there,
:21:41. > :21:51.the real rock, so when she relies on, Piotr. David Kotyza, he is here
:21:52. > :22:04.alongside dad. One thing we didn't see from Caroline Wozniacki
:22:05. > :22:07.yesterday, it was a coach side call. You are allowed to call the coach
:22:08. > :22:12.on, and even if she is in a winning position, she often calls her
:22:13. > :22:17.father, who has doubled up as her coach were so many years on for a
:22:18. > :22:25.pep talk, nothing yesterday. And I wonder, if she wants a pep talk,
:22:26. > :22:29.would it be him or David Kotyza? We will find out. I hope Puig is not
:22:30. > :22:32.too disheartened, she is playing wonderful tennis, here she is start
:22:33. > :23:58.of the second. Might have just caught, Wozniacki
:23:59. > :24:03.not convinced but not wanting to waste challenge this early the set.
:24:04. > :24:44.UMPIRE: Game, Miss Puig. Good start to the second, she is battling well,
:24:45. > :24:48.Monica Puig, and Wozniacki will know that she will still have a lot of
:24:49. > :24:54.work to do here. They have played a couple of years ago, that was in
:24:55. > :24:59.Puig's hometown of Miami, and it went three sets them, Wozniacki
:25:00. > :25:04.winning in the decider. But I have a feeling there is plenty more tennis
:25:05. > :25:07.here. You must never write Monica Puig off. She is a dangerous,
:25:08. > :26:42.explosive tennis player. It is a high risk game that she
:26:43. > :26:44.plays, and very few can hit through Wozniacki, which is what she is
:26:45. > :27:04.attempting to do out here. I was impressed with the way
:27:05. > :27:08.Wozniacki served yesterday against Samantha Stosur, a good percentage
:27:09. > :27:23.and played great conversion. I just wonder having a Czech coach
:27:24. > :27:26.in David Kotyza, they are very good technicians, all the players have
:27:27. > :27:32.wonderful timing, I just wonder if he has been brought in just a tidy,
:27:33. > :27:35.it seems weird talking about a world number one with technical
:27:36. > :27:39.deficiencies, but there have always been a few hitches in that serve.
:27:40. > :27:41.She will double fault now, but it does look, you are right, it does
:27:42. > :28:12.look very smooth, doesn't it? When you talk about a top player
:28:13. > :28:15.fiddling around with their technique, it is all about subtle,
:28:16. > :28:21.small changes, it is never too obvious. No, they are not going to
:28:22. > :28:26.take a crowbar to the technique. That would be a disaster! Once you
:28:27. > :28:30.have laid a certain way for so many years, it is very tough to change,
:28:31. > :28:51.make big changes. And what about these small marginal gain?
:28:52. > :29:00.Clean games in the end for the Dane. She is going nicely, danger from the
:29:01. > :29:05.other end but she is handling it really well. I just wonder if she is
:29:06. > :29:10.getting her patterns right. She has been able to mix up her serves very
:29:11. > :29:15.well, particularly on that ad side. Naturally she prefers that tea
:29:16. > :30:10.server and the one out wide, the flatter serves.
:30:11. > :30:23.Sometimes that second serve has a look of something of a lottery about
:30:24. > :30:26.it. It is almost like a slightly slower version of first serve,
:30:27. > :30:28.doesn't get a lot of shape or spin on it.
:30:29. > :31:07.UMPIRE: Let, first service. Drive volley has paid off for Puig.
:31:08. > :32:37.-- there have been times where that drive volley has paid off.
:32:38. > :32:44.Deuce. She didn't play to the court. I understand why. Was a mis-hit from
:32:45. > :32:52.Wozniacki, as if it was drifting wide. It looked like a terrible
:32:53. > :32:53.lead, didn't it? Not as breezy as was yesterday. Can't blame the wind,
:32:54. > :33:14.can you? A tough, tough competitor, someone
:33:15. > :33:18.who didn't really take her tennis to seriously until she was in her
:33:19. > :33:26.mid-teens and then she decided that's what she wanted to do.
:33:27. > :33:37.Fabulous! UMPIRE: Game, Miss Pouille. -- Ms
:33:38. > :33:46.Puig. When you look at these two and how
:33:47. > :33:49.they've developed, you've got Wozniacki, who was winning junior
:33:50. > :33:53.Wimbledon at 15 and made up her mind at ten that she wanted to be number
:33:54. > :33:58.one in the world, and you have Monica Puig who was playing at local
:33:59. > :34:02.clubs and doesn't come from a sporty family at all, comes from a very
:34:03. > :34:06.academic family and finished high school, had loads of offers from the
:34:07. > :34:10.top American, just like Stanford and UCLA and chose to play tennis. Two
:34:11. > :34:17.very different routes into the game and I'm just wondering, as players
:34:18. > :34:21.are maturing later, maybe you can stay at school longer and have a
:34:22. > :34:23.more regular life? I'm a great believer in all young players
:34:24. > :34:29.staying at school at least until the age of 16 and staying at home for as
:34:30. > :34:34.long as possible. Having that stability of living at home, being
:34:35. > :34:38.close to your family, as well as combining your education and
:34:39. > :34:42.training, I'm a big believer in that and I really don't think there's any
:34:43. > :34:47.wrong or right way to go about being a professional tennis player. And
:34:48. > :34:51.often I think there's too much pressure on young kids today to have
:34:52. > :34:56.a full-time schedule at the age of ten, to be playing five, six hours
:34:57. > :35:04.of tennis, and trying to compete in other sports as well. It's just too
:35:05. > :35:07.much, too soon. Just enjoy it! Puig probably won't be playing her best
:35:08. > :35:12.tennis until she's in her mid-to-late 20s but that's OK.
:35:13. > :35:16.You're right, the wind has dropped but there is a sort of sea mist
:35:17. > :35:22.coming across the caught up moment! Strange conditions. Pretty warm and
:35:23. > :35:25.humid out there. A lot for the players to cope with. Lets hope the
:35:26. > :36:04.surface stays dry. She's got her regain with that
:36:05. > :36:09.backhand. -- again. Puig doing a great job to hold her ground here.
:36:10. > :36:11.Which she wasn't doing in the opening set. She was going way too
:36:12. > :36:48.early. It's quite interesting. We've just
:36:49. > :36:53.got what I think is a reliable translation of what her coach said
:36:54. > :36:59.to her and he actually said to her, "Why aren't you going for it when
:37:00. > :37:02.you're up in the game?" And she like, "I don't know," and he's told
:37:03. > :37:28.her to just keep going and keep Wozniacki on the back foot.
:37:29. > :37:33.It's all about controlled aggression when you're up against Caroline
:37:34. > :37:40.Wozniacki. You can't just beat her from the back of the court with
:37:41. > :37:44.these long rallies and long points, and you need to keep going for it
:37:45. > :37:52.and accept that you will make some errors. Here's what he was telling
:37:53. > :37:56.her, 15-30, you've got to go for it it But it's OK, you make a few
:37:57. > :38:00.errors but if it's a positive error, fine. Next point, get on with it.
:38:01. > :38:03.Didn't totally commit to that return, did she? Allows Wozniacki
:38:04. > :39:15.some breathing room. Good challenge. She had quite a long
:39:16. > :39:20.think about it but you know when you've had a good serve... It just
:39:21. > :39:24.feels good. It is very hard to explain, but you just know. That is
:39:25. > :39:46.as technical as we are going to get. Did really well from 15-30.
:39:47. > :40:33.Wozniacki levels up once more. Caroline's just asking about the
:40:34. > :40:36.court surface because it's hard to see on your screens but this fog
:40:37. > :40:41.has, over the court, reigning a lot of moisture. -- has come over the
:40:42. > :41:16.court. That's what's coming over the
:41:17. > :41:17.courts. It might take a while. As you mentioned, Annie, the wind has
:41:18. > :41:29.dropped. It doesn't take much for the grass
:41:30. > :41:44.to start feeling slippery underfoot for the players.
:41:45. > :41:51.Really convincing service came from Puig and she's still very much in
:41:52. > :42:00.this second set, this third-round match. The winner of this match,
:42:01. > :42:06.it's the bottom half of the draw and there's only two seeds in the top
:42:07. > :42:11.half. The winner will play either Kristina Mladenovic of France or
:42:12. > :42:18.Anna-Lena Friedsam of Germany, both really big hitters. But, Annie, I've
:42:19. > :42:24.been covering the tennis a very long time and you been on the Torah long
:42:25. > :42:27.time, have you ever known a year where so many seeds fall before the
:42:28. > :42:35.second and third round? It's been incredible, from week to week, at
:42:36. > :42:37.all these tournaments it's been so in predictable. The depth of the
:42:38. > :42:41.women's game is so much stronger than it used to be. It makes it
:42:42. > :42:44.tough for fans to follow because you don't have four or five big
:42:45. > :42:49.superstars like you do in comparison to the men's game but I think it's a
:42:50. > :42:53.great opportunity for the other players out there. Anything is
:42:54. > :42:56.possible and it doesn't matter how high your ranking is, what seed you
:42:57. > :42:59.are in the draw. You've got to be on your garden right from the very
:43:00. > :43:04.first match you play in any tournament. You are still in touch
:43:05. > :43:08.with a lot of players on the tour. Is there a feeling in the locker
:43:09. > :43:13.room that if you are ranked 70 in the world you can still be a top-10
:43:14. > :43:16.player? Absolutely. On any given day, anything is possible. We've

:43:22. > :43:22.a doc who would've thought Angelique Kerber would have won the Australian
:43:23. > :43:40.Open at the start of the year? Anything is possible at Wimbledon.
:43:41. > :43:43.It makes punditry tricky. Wozniacki is just pacing about, a little
:43:44. > :44:31.unsure of the service. I wonder if that is what the coach
:44:32. > :44:37.was talking about. She's just had a look over at him. But you've got to
:44:38. > :44:40.go for it. You can't hold back. Had a lot of opportunities, many
:44:41. > :45:32.chances. That's where Wozniacki is
:45:33. > :45:35.vulnerable. If you can get her moving to that forehand and Russia
:45:36. > :45:38.on that forehand side, you can draw an error. She's got quite an extreme
:45:39. > :46:11.grip. She must feel like this match is
:46:12. > :46:13.very much on her racket but there have been plenty of others before
:46:14. > :46:23.that have felt the same and have come off the loser.
:46:24. > :46:53.UMPIRE: Game, Miss Wozniacki. The chances keep sailing by,
:46:54. > :47:50.Wozniacki levels up once more. Three games all so far in the second set.
:47:51. > :48:41.Certainly gets that very quickly threw the ball. Has a superfast am.

:48:53. > :50:17.It looks like the coaches back on and our translator is at the ready.
:50:18. > :50:25.What I'm hearing, some of the snippets of information, he feels
:50:26. > :50:28.that she's doing too much of the running and not enough of the
:50:29. > :50:33.dictating out there. Wants to get Wozniacki on the move. We might hear
:50:34. > :50:37.more snippets in just a little while. Our translator is very busy
:50:38. > :51:09.at the moment. I'm also hearing that the coach
:51:10. > :51:11.wants his player Monica Puig to be closer to the baseline, doesn't want
:51:12. > :51:29.her to get caught back behind that baseline. Stay on the baseline.
:51:30. > :51:55.That's where you can dictate points from.
:51:56. > :52:08.Oh, dear! Did everything right until the smash.
:52:09. > :52:14.It's those kind of mistakes that are really costing her in this match up.
:52:15. > :52:31.Wozniacki gives so little away. More bite behind these returns from
:52:32. > :52:34.Puig and that's when she can really make an impact it doc Wozniacki
:52:35. > :52:39.doesn't have the biggest serve, particularly of the biggest serve
:52:40. > :52:54.return. That's when Puig can look to dictate the point.
:52:55. > :53:06.That's what the coach asked her to do. She's done it quite brilliantly.
:53:07. > :53:39.And its Puig who has the first break points in this second set.
:53:40. > :53:49.Much better second serve from Wozniacki. Just kept moving Roy from
:53:50. > :54:17.Puig that serve. -- moving away from.
:54:18. > :54:25.Wonderful returning from Puig and she gets the breakthrough that has
:54:26. > :54:30.been so expecting and one that she should have had in that opening set.
:54:31. > :54:37.Had all those chances to lead 4-2, got pegged back and here she is now
:54:38. > :54:40.turning this match on its head. And will serve to take this into a
:54:41. > :55:32.deciding set. Anne, what happens on that second
:55:33. > :55:39.serve? She's got this aggressive mindset behind her and sometimes it
:55:40. > :55:43.doesn't have to be all out. You can aim in the middle of the box.
:55:44. > :55:56.Perfectly played, that point. I love the sound of the ball and her
:55:57. > :56:22.racket strings. It's such a clean hit. Wonderful timing.
:56:23. > :56:35.Just the one break in this second set. Looks to be enough for Puig.
:56:36. > :56:42.Two chances for her to close it out. What a turn around from the Puerto
:56:43. > :56:47.Rican. She levels up and takes the second set 6-3.
:56:48. > :56:52.STUDIO: We mentioned that this match is running behind schedule because
:56:53. > :56:55.we lost an hour and a half's later the weather earlier so it means the
:56:56. > :57:01.match on Court One is the first singles of the day between Cibulkova
:57:02. > :57:06.of Slovakia and Bondarenko of the Ukraine. And you can see that
:57:07. > :57:16.Cibulkova has taken the first set 7-6. So this is what the draw looks
:57:17. > :57:18.like at this stage of affairs. We've got Radwanska against Bouchard to
:57:19. > :57:23.come up shortly, the winner of that match on Court One will play the
:57:24. > :57:27.winner of that. And then Mladenovic against Friedsam. Mladenovic is
:57:28. > :57:33.seeded 32 at Wimbledon. The winner of that match will play the winner
:57:34. > :57:36.of the game at the moment between Puig and Wozniacki. At the bottom
:57:37. > :57:41.half of the draw, a lot of big names fell by the wayside. You can see
:57:42. > :57:49.that there are only three seeds left in the bottom half of the draw
:57:50. > :57:53.already. Pliskova plays Doi. That's very late, the fourth match on court
:57:54. > :57:58.want it doc the winner of that will play Brengle or Vesnina, who beat
:57:59. > :58:04.Bencic last night. And then Kvitova against Konta will be our third
:58:05. > :58:07.match on Centre Court. Talking of champions, I might just mention the
:58:08. > :58:13.doubles match that is taking place behind me at the moment tween Sam
:58:14. > :58:20.Stosur and Lucie Safarova against Martina Hingis and Sammy Mirza who
:58:21. > :58:26.are the top seeds here, who are ranked two at the moment and it is
:58:27. > :58:30.gone to a champions' tie-break. But in the way that Men's Doubles can
:58:31. > :58:35.sometimes be a bludgeoning game, it is an one simple putaway, this is a
:58:36. > :58:39.fantastic contest with long rallies, really engrossing, and you really
:58:40. > :58:46.can't get a seat around court to at the moment. And as we head back to
:58:47. > :58:49.Centre Court, it is busy. Sam was saying that Centre Court and Court
:58:50. > :58:55.One are sold out today, which is fantastic and for the rest of the
:58:56. > :58:59.week, ticket sales have been great. I'm sure Anne and some will talk
:59:00. > :59:03.about it, massive development plans are in the pipeline for here at
:59:04. > :59:07.Eastbourne and this post will be unrecognisable in three years, with
:59:08. > :59:10.a lot of the old buildings knocked down and restored and play
:59:11. > :59:14.facilities improved, so Eastbourne is going to go from, if you like, a
:59:15. > :59:19.championship tennis tournament to a Premier League tennis tournament in
:59:20. > :59:24.three years and, Sam, it's going to look very different? It is, there is
:59:25. > :59:28.going to be a ?44 million investment between the borough council and the
:59:29. > :59:31.LTA. I've seen the plans they look wonderful. At it looks pretty good
:59:32. > :59:36.now and it's not often the women play early on in tournaments with a
:59:37. > :59:40.packed house on Centre Court. This is a special event and particularly
:59:41. > :59:43.someone like Wozniacki, who has been around for a long time, realises how
:59:44. > :00:01.lucky they are here. There is a loyal fan base in
:00:02. > :00:10.Eastbourne, isn't there? They like their tennis here. They are enjoying
:00:11. > :00:11.this one. This is fascinating. Puig has completely turned this match on
:00:12. > :00:23.its head. And in a way, in that first set it
:00:24. > :00:29.was weak playing the better tennis and Wozniacki hanging on and Puig
:00:30. > :00:36.not quite taking the opportunities. In the second set, it all changed.
:00:37. > :00:38.And Wozniacki's dad doesn't look worried but who knows how difficult
:00:39. > :01:27.the next 30 minutes are going to be? Well, she was broken in her opening
:01:28. > :01:32.service game of the match, almost an hour and a half ago, and still
:01:33. > :02:39.struggling here behind her serve. Needs to hold.
:02:40. > :03:19.The former champion really digging in.
:03:20. > :03:29.Well, it was a superb return from Puig. Wozniacki did well to dig out.
:03:30. > :03:31.On one or two occasions, we have seen that backhand down the line
:03:32. > :04:50.from Puig really doing the damage. UMPIRE: Miss Wozniacki is
:04:51. > :04:55.challenging the call on the right near sideline. The ball was called
:04:56. > :05:02.out. She is a think about whether she challenges or not, she processes
:05:03. > :05:09.it first, it is not instantaneous. And that is why, it is very early in
:05:10. > :05:12.the set. Just to incorrect challenges left for Wozniacki, and
:05:13. > :05:24.another break from Puig. Fantastic tennis!
:05:25. > :05:39.UMPIRE: Game, Miss Puig. Gregg first game, final set. Miss
:05:40. > :05:48.Wozniacki has two challenges remaining. I was thinking when she
:05:49. > :05:54.was 4-3 up with the new balls in that second set, and said, get up to
:05:55. > :05:59.the baseline, be more aggressive. He said that was the plan right from
:06:00. > :06:03.the start, he said the same at the end of the first set as well, but
:06:04. > :06:07.she teams to have taken it all on board and she is connecting better.
:06:08. > :06:11.And Wozniacki is backing off a little herself. It is a really
:06:12. > :06:14.meaningful ball strike. You can forget the game plan in the middle
:06:15. > :06:41.of the match. It is nice to have a reminder.
:06:42. > :06:50.Much better from the Dane. Much better aggression from that
:06:51. > :06:55.forehand. Something she backed off doing in that second set. She
:06:56. > :07:00.allowed Puig to really dictate points rather than going after it
:07:01. > :07:01.herself, and it is a natural counterpunch, she has got to step
:07:02. > :08:43.up, too, when it really matters. Wozniacki pushing back. And a chance
:08:44. > :08:48.for any immediate break back, you would expect nothing less from the
:08:49. > :09:21.woman who spent so long as the world number one.
:09:22. > :09:54.Well, they really have been playing at such a high level right from the
:09:55. > :09:58.start of the match, very few ebbs and flows. This is such an important
:09:59. > :10:21.game for Puig to hold. She has done it again.
:10:22. > :10:30.UMPIRE: Game, Miss Puig. Miss Puig leads by two games to love.
:10:31. > :10:37.The second serve has been a little bit iffy, but she has done very well
:10:38. > :10:40.with her first. You can see what she favours going down the tea,
:10:41. > :10:58.particularly on that induce side. UMPIRE: Let, first service she has
:10:59. > :11:27.hardly lost any points behind it, really step up.
:11:28. > :11:37.Clever. I have lost count of the number of times she has been really
:11:38. > :11:41.able to burn Wozniacki with her backhand down the line. Whether it
:11:42. > :11:45.has been an outright winner, or whether she has forced up the error
:11:46. > :12:08.or set up the next ball, it has done a lot of damage today.
:12:09. > :12:14.And it is a battle between these two as to who can stay upon the baseline
:12:15. > :12:16.or get themselves inside the baseline to take the ball on and to
:12:17. > :12:25.rush the opponent. Personally, I think it comes more
:12:26. > :13:16.naturally to Puig than it does to Wozniacki.
:13:17. > :13:24.UMPIRE: Game, Miss Wozniacki. Buying us all some time there, but
:13:25. > :13:34.down a break in this final set, Wozniacki. -- buying herself
:13:35. > :13:37.sometime. We are midway through this event, we certainly hope the weather
:13:38. > :13:41.doesn't disrupt it too much tomorrow, but that might be wishful
:13:42. > :13:46.thinking. With the players that are left at the moment, and this is an
:13:47. > :13:50.awful question for you, Annie. Are they coupled that you see that might
:13:51. > :14:04.be featuring on Saturday afternoon? Well, hell innovation
:14:05. > :14:21.in a while, Eleanor Vesnina, she has done well. And I am fascinated to
:14:22. > :14:26.see how Eugenie Bouchard performs in her next match against Radwanska. So
:14:27. > :14:37.far she has taken at Lepchenko in the first round, and she has also
:14:38. > :14:41.come up against Begu, both comfortable wins for her. I think it
:14:42. > :14:46.will be a good test her taking on the top seed, as it will be for the
:14:47. > :14:48.rest of us to see where exactly she is, because we know she can play and
:14:49. > :15:02.perform. UMPIRE: Time. Are we going to have a
:15:03. > :15:09.Bouchard - Vesnina final? , chalk you up for that? Hard to say. So
:15:10. > :15:16.many names to watch out for these days.
:15:17. > :15:19.UMPIRE: Ladies and gentlemen, take your seat, please. Thank you. The
:15:20. > :15:59.fans really invested in this one. UMPIRE: Correction, the call was
:16:00. > :16:03.good. Replay the point. One of those is it was one of those where the
:16:04. > :16:10.flight looks as if it is going way out, but just held up at the last
:16:11. > :16:13.moment. And even though we have all the technology, that is what umpires
:16:14. > :16:22.are supposed to do. Intervene when it is a clear mistake.
:16:23. > :16:31.UMPIRE: Out. Is she going to challenge? She is
:16:32. > :16:41.not taking on the umpire on that one. The umpire today, Paula Vieira
:16:42. > :16:42.Susa. That wasn't challenged, but we can look at Hawk-Eye anyway, and
:16:43. > :16:57.that was a good decision from Puig. Don't forget you had a couple of
:16:58. > :17:24.break points in Puig's last service game. She has got three more here.
:17:25. > :17:31.And all of a sudden, the pendulum has swung back the Dane's way, and
:17:32. > :18:59.we are level in this deciding set. Well, she knows, her coach knows,
:19:00. > :19:03.that if this turned into a war of attrition with these long baseline
:19:04. > :19:04.rallies, it is highly likely that she won't be shaking hands is the
:19:05. > :20:06.winner. She has ramped up her aggression,
:20:07. > :20:21.and it is paying off for Wozniacki. That is the way it has got to be. If
:20:22. > :20:26.she is going to work our way back up in the rankings, back inside the
:20:27. > :21:15.world top 20, top ten, she needs to step inside that baseline.
:21:16. > :21:21.That has rather taken the wind out of Wozniacki's sales. She was in a
:21:22. > :22:06.good position in this game. UMPIRE: Game, Ms Wozniacki. Miss
:22:07. > :22:13.Puig has requested to see her coach. This Wozniacki leads by three games
:22:14. > :22:18.to two. And coach one is back on from
:22:19. > :23:36.Monaco. -- for Monica. Well, that is the last time she can
:23:37. > :23:44.have him on unless Wozniacki has a bathroom break or takes an injury
:23:45. > :23:48.time-out. He was saying, care of our translator, more power, but she has
:23:49. > :23:54.to pick a time and coming at the right time, not get caught out. But
:23:55. > :23:56.it is very much more of the same, keep going after Wozniacki, keep
:23:57. > :24:34.getting up on that baseline. Oh, superb from Wozniacki. David
:24:35. > :24:44.Kotyza, and father Piotr on the right. They look like they get on,
:24:45. > :24:53.so that is good. I saw dad having a stroll on the seafront this morning.
:24:54. > :24:58.David seems a little more laid-back than dad. Maybe they haven't worked
:24:59. > :24:59.out what is going on, maybe they are still deciding. Trying something
:25:00. > :25:12.different. Going back to the on court coaching,
:25:13. > :25:18.I was saying to Puig about coming in, coming in at the right time,
:25:19. > :25:20.that is all easier said than done, because coming forwards for Puig
:25:21. > :25:23.isn't something that comes naturally. Does she really
:25:24. > :25:34.understand when the right time is not to come forward?
:25:35. > :25:39.She is coming forward when she has her opportunities because she is
:25:40. > :25:44.forceful. It is due to a Wozniacki short ball. We have just seen
:25:45. > :25:46.exhibit A, but it doesn't terribly comfortable when she is pulled in on
:25:47. > :26:39.a big point. Those are the mistakes she can't
:26:40. > :26:43.afford to make at this stage in the match, especially against a
:26:44. > :27:29.competitor like Wozniacki. Puig under no pressure there whatsoever.
:27:30. > :27:39.UMPIRE: Game, Miss Puig. New balls, please.
:27:40. > :27:43.Well, there was some excellent serving that allowed her to get back
:27:44. > :27:46.in this match and pick up the second set, and some fine deliveries to get
:27:47. > :30:07.out of that game. That is just coming up to the
:30:08. > :30:12.two-hour mark, and this court is starting to harden up, starting to
:30:13. > :30:15.play better. Able to get the ball through it far more easily, and
:30:16. > :30:24.Wozniacki in a bit of trouble in this game now.
:30:25. > :30:34.The right shot? She likes to go for broke. She does like her lines,
:30:35. > :30:55.takes time away from Wozniacki. Happy with the risk.
:30:56. > :31:18.A great job of cutting the angle off on that return.
:31:19. > :31:29.This match takes another twist and its Puig who is ahead with the
:31:30. > :31:36.break. Once again, you feel the on court coaching has done the trick.
:31:37. > :31:44.Still plays for four at Ricoh, does Monica, despite the fact she left
:31:45. > :31:55.their when she was one-year-old. -- still plays for Puerto Rico. She is
:31:56. > :31:59.still very close to her Puerto Rican roots and goes back there every
:32:00. > :32:04.summer to see her mother's parents. She's like a superstar in Puerto
:32:05. > :32:08.Rico. They used to be a women's tour event in Poyer to Rico back in the
:32:09. > :32:16.days of Gigi Fernandez, who ended up playing under the American flag. --
:32:17. > :32:19.in Puerto Rico. She talks about how committed she is too Puerto Rico,
:32:20. > :32:25.even though she's lived all her life in Miami. That tournament was before
:32:26. > :32:34.my time, Sam. I don't remember any tournament in poor to Rico. --
:32:35. > :32:48.Puerto Rico. The night matches were interesting. A wonderful place. You
:32:49. > :32:55.missed out, you see! But these days, the players go to so many glamorous
:32:56. > :33:01.locations, Acapulco... But all you see is your hotel room and the
:33:02. > :33:04.tennis court! The life of a tennis player. You don't get to see the
:33:05. > :33:14.seafront, the promenade, the bandstand. You can keep Acapulco and
:33:15. > :33:16.Monterey! And of course the South Downs are impressive. Did try and
:33:17. > :33:39.get up there the other day but didn't quite make it.
:33:40. > :33:48.A change up there from Puig. It's a good sign, isn't it, if you're a
:33:49. > :34:08.Puig sign, to see Wozniacki scampering about? -- a Puig fan.
:34:09. > :34:16.How does she get this home from here? She's got to be able to hold
:34:17. > :34:20.her nerve. She's got to be able to hit her spot on the serve, too, and
:34:21. > :34:46.not allow Wozniacki to get on that front foot on the return of serve.
:34:47. > :34:54.UMPIRE: Miss Wozniacki has challenged the call. That wasn't a
:34:55. > :34:57.thoughtful challenge. That was a frustrated attempt to. The ball is
:34:58. > :35:25.certainly long on the baseline which is nearest our commentary box.
:35:26. > :35:47.UMPIRE: Miss Wozniacki has one challenge remaining. That's the best
:35:48. > :35:54.game she's played in this match. I think the nerves are OK so far.
:35:55. > :36:06.Wozniacki serving to stay in this third round match.
:36:07. > :37:27.Going from strength to strength, Miss Puig.
:37:28. > :37:35.He knows what great scrapper Carolinas. Whatever it takes her to
:37:36. > :38:21.stay in this match... -- Caroline is.
:38:22. > :38:24.Well, Wozniacki says, "My car, you're going to have to serve for it
:38:25. > :38:36.if you want to move through close We talk so much about forehands and
:38:37. > :38:42.backhands unfitness and all that but I think with these tough players --
:38:43. > :38:50.top players, toughness, grit is as or maybe more important it I don't
:38:51. > :38:57.think she gets enough credit for how strong she is mentally. You compare
:38:58. > :39:03.her to some of the other top players and you could say she is limited in
:39:04. > :39:07.their abilities in many ways but she's such a great competitor,
:39:08. > :39:11.Caroline Wozniacki. Sheol was fight for every ball, chases things down
:39:12. > :39:15.makes life as difficult as possible. You have to beat her when you're up
:39:16. > :39:20.against her. It will be a good test for Monica Puig to see if she
:39:21. > :39:24.conserve this one out. There's not much difference between the two in
:39:25. > :39:29.the rankings at the moment but this would be a huge win for Monica Puig
:39:30. > :39:34.against a former world number one. You'd put that pretty much near the
:39:35. > :39:37.top of your CV, wouldn't you? Yeah. And cheese battle hardened this
:39:38. > :39:43.week, came through two rounds of qualifying, one of those really
:39:44. > :39:49.tricky three setters. But then very comfortable against Brodie in the
:39:50. > :39:54.opening match and then against Anna Cognac. One of the class of 97 who
:39:55. > :40:05.were so talented. Not a bad way to spend your
:40:06. > :40:11.Wednesday afternoon watching this match. Now, can Puig hold her nerve
:40:12. > :40:37.and serve out for a place in the quarters?
:40:38. > :40:44.That's a pretty good start to the game. You'd think at moments like
:40:45. > :40:48.this, winning the first point of the game is so keen. Tends to set the
:40:49. > :41:22.tone for the next viewpoints. That was a very late call. She's
:41:23. > :41:23.only got one challenge left, Wozniacki, so she'd better be right
:41:24. > :41:43.here. No challengers left for Wozniacki. A
:41:44. > :42:20.great intervention from the umpire. She's had a great match so far.
:42:21. > :42:26.The best drop-shot here from Puig. She really broadcast that one. And
:42:27. > :42:43.didn't close the net after playing. Deep breaths now here for Puig.
:42:44. > :42:56.Could do with a first serve. This could be two match points for
:42:57. > :43:34.the Puerto Rican. She went for it, didn't she? If you
:43:35. > :43:35.are in her player camp, you must have a heart attack with that second
:43:36. > :44:11.serve. Still has a much point here. That said. What a performance from
:44:12. > :44:16.Monica Puig, and the qualifier is through to the quarterfinals at
:44:17. > :44:20.Devonshire Park. Fantastic performance from the 22-year-old.
:44:21. > :44:34.She really held her nerve at the end. Incredible aggression. She
:44:35. > :44:39.didn't waver. Played so well in that first set, but what a comeback in
:44:40. > :44:48.the second, served brilliantly. Just the one break in the second and one
:44:49. > :44:58.break in the decider. Well, a former champion. I'm sure she'll be here,
:44:59. > :45:01.bitterly disappointed. As Sportsweek -- as for Puig, she will be another
:45:02. > :45:06.player in that Wimbledon draw unseeded, who will be dangerous. And
:45:07. > :45:14.it's such an open section. She will play the winner of either Mladenovic
:45:15. > :45:19.all Friedsam. They are just starting out over an caught one. Love to hear
:45:20. > :45:25.what she's got to say. Here she is with Annabel Croft.
:45:26. > :45:29.Well played, Monica. That was such an incredible contest. Caroline is
:45:30. > :45:33.such a veritable opponent. What made the difference? It was a really
:45:34. > :45:37.tough match. There wasn't a lot of room to make a lot of mistakes. She
:45:38. > :45:41.made me play for every single ball so just being as aggressive as I
:45:42. > :45:44.could, so I'm really happy with how I played. Things were getting tight
:45:45. > :45:49.towards the end. You must be pleased with how you served up a match?
:45:50. > :45:52.Finishing an amazing the way to go sometimes but I'm just really happy
:45:53. > :45:57.with my performance so far and I hope I can keep going far. You've
:45:58. > :46:01.got Madonna that all Friedsam in the next match, what are your thoughts
:46:02. > :46:06.on facing them? I'm going to try and enjoy the win first but it was a
:46:07. > :46:10.tough match out there today. I'm ready for whatever comes my way so
:46:11. > :46:13.I'm excited. You've made your way through qualifying and have won
:46:14. > :46:19.three matches in the main draw. Have you got lots of energy left? Yeah, I
:46:20. > :46:24.did that at the beginning so coming through qualifying has helped me out
:46:25. > :46:29.a bit. I'm just trying to focus on recovering for tomorrow and just
:46:30. > :46:30.continuing. Well done again it into the quarterfinals, Monica Puig,
:46:31. > :46:35.ladies gentlemen. APPLAUSE
:46:36. > :46:39.STUDIO: Perhaps one unexpected name to enter the last eight but at least
:46:40. > :46:52.order of some sort was restored on Court One, where Cibulkova beat her
:46:53. > :46:58.opponent in straight sets, 76, 63. A diminutive figure, as you can see,
:46:59. > :47:03.just 5'3", but that was a big screech on match point to take her
:47:04. > :47:07.through into the last eight. So we've just seen a great performance.
:47:08. > :47:11.That was a really good match between Monica Puig and Caroline Wozniacki.
:47:12. > :47:15.Then it's Radwanska against Bouchard. They will be on court very
:47:16. > :47:17.shortly, and our third match this afternoon will see Petra Kvitova
:47:18. > :47:22.against Jo Konta, the British and one. We had to leave you on BBC Two
:47:23. > :47:30.last night when Jo had just won the first sent web offset against her
:47:31. > :47:34.opponent, Lesia Tsurenko, but if you managed to follow it on the BBC
:47:35. > :47:41.website you will have seen Jo winning emphatically six Ivan wanted
:47:42. > :47:44.top that is the unfamiliar sight of glorious blue skies above Eastbourne
:47:45. > :47:51.late last night. It was a spectacular evening. Anyway, after
:47:52. > :47:56.the match, Jo told us what her thoughts were.
:47:57. > :48:02.When we spoke last year, you were on the top 150, you are now inside the
:48:03. > :48:07.top 20, there are huge posters of view, one right behind you. How are
:48:08. > :48:12.you coping with all of that? Is it a surprise? I think the less time I
:48:13. > :48:17.spent thinking about it, the less and less effect it will have on me,
:48:18. > :48:24.if it has one. I'm very much the same person with the same desires.
:48:25. > :48:26.I'm just trying to improve on my profession but I'm very grateful for
:48:27. > :48:31.the situation that I'm in, very grateful for the events that I'm
:48:32. > :48:36.playing in. All the players work all their lives to get to the top of
:48:37. > :48:39.their game so I feel very fortunate and I'm really enjoying just getting
:48:40. > :48:43.out there every single day and competing or training to the best of
:48:44. > :48:49.my ability. It is your home tournament. Do you have any home
:48:50. > :48:55.comforts? Yes, I get to cheekily ask my parents to make my breakfast and
:48:56. > :49:00.get to just roll-out of bed and have breakfast in my pyjamas, where's in
:49:01. > :49:03.hotel rooms identikit would be socially acceptable. So I'm very
:49:04. > :49:07.happy to be at home and spent time with them. But obviously changes
:49:08. > :49:12.your stress levels, being at home, because you are very relaxed. You up
:49:13. > :49:17.playing a two-time champion, Petra Kvitova, who you know very well.
:49:18. > :49:21.What are her strengths? She is an incredibly good ball striker, she
:49:22. > :49:25.has a very good serve, she's left-handed and she really does love
:49:26. > :49:30.the grass so I'm just going to be going out there looking to really
:49:31. > :49:35.stay in the points that I need to and try to take advantage of any
:49:36. > :49:39.opportunity that comes my way. You two are almost the same age, you
:49:40. > :49:42.been around for the same amount of time on the tour. You seemed quite
:49:43. > :49:47.friendly at Edgbaston a couple of weeks ago, playing tennis of canal
:49:48. > :49:51.boats. Are you quite good friends? We had an interesting time on that
:49:52. > :49:54.day. I think we are friendly and I don't know her that well but
:49:55. > :49:58.whenever I've spoken to her and seen her, we've always had nice chats and
:49:59. > :50:03.she's a very lovely girl. Everyone says that about Kvitova drop in
:50:04. > :50:08.terms of your progression over the last year, going from the top 152
:50:09. > :50:13.120, have you looked at it as it has been a mental progression and the
:50:14. > :50:16.self belief came from the technical advances that you've made,
:50:17. > :50:18.particularly in commentary today they were talking about how much
:50:19. > :50:24.your forehand has improved, or is the other way round, the technical
:50:25. > :50:31.advantages have given self belief? I think it became less about looking
:50:32. > :50:34.for something. I think the less you look for self belief, the less you
:50:35. > :50:41.look for things, the more energy you invest in just working and just
:50:42. > :50:45.trying. That's what we'll give the opportunity to play lots of matches
:50:46. > :50:50.and lots of matches does bring you certain confidence that you can
:50:51. > :50:56.repeat day in, day out. It is one of those chicken or the eggs and REO is
:50:57. > :51:01.but I think the more matches you get under your belt, the more you feel
:51:02. > :51:03.comfortable in situations out there. You've spoken about the fat that
:51:04. > :51:07.your confidence doesn't come from the rank and you have, even though
:51:08. > :51:11.you're in the top 20. Can you explain that, because I think people
:51:12. > :51:16.might find it hard to understand. It's important to understand that
:51:17. > :51:21.results and rankings come and go. Sport can be quite fickle in that
:51:22. > :51:25.way and it's important to really have your self-respect and your
:51:26. > :51:30.self-confidence, things that you have more control over, your effort,
:51:31. > :51:35.who you are as a person, because that's where you can always go back
:51:36. > :51:42.to. If you live and die with your wins and losses, it can be a very
:51:43. > :51:47.roller-coaster like living. I try to keep it as level as possible.
:51:48. > :51:50.Looking ahead, I know you are going to say you don't want to talk about
:51:51. > :51:53.it but Wimbledon is just round the corner. It must be a difficult
:51:54. > :51:58.feeling going into that knowing you are so highly ranked. I guess it
:51:59. > :52:02.just depends if I'll be a top 16 seed or not. I don't know what my
:52:03. > :52:06.ranking is or how the seeding will work exactly. I think that will be
:52:07. > :52:10.the only difference, whether I move upstairs downstairs for the locker
:52:11. > :52:16.room. The locker room is a very nice when you do that. Both locker room
:52:17. > :52:19.is a very nice so I'm not picky. And just happy to be part of such a good
:52:20. > :52:23.event, it is really the most procedures one of the year. And also
:52:24. > :52:27.I get to spend another week at relative home, so that's nice,
:52:28. > :52:31.before I get back on the plane and start flying transatlantic.
:52:32. > :52:34.STUDIO: The bad bees for Jo is that she's not going to be in the best
:52:35. > :52:37.locker room but the good news for her is that she is the first British
:52:38. > :52:43.seed in the Women's Singles at Wimbledon for 32 years. She is
:52:44. > :52:48.number 17 seed, the first person since Jo Durie in 1984. I will say
:52:49. > :52:52.one other thing about Jo Konta, if you want to know more about her
:52:53. > :52:55.because she has come with a rush into the public consciousness, a
:52:56. > :52:59.brilliant piece of journalism in the Daily Mail today by the tennis
:53:00. > :53:02.correspondent Mike Dixon about her background and what has motivated
:53:03. > :53:06.her over the last few years to become what she is now and that is
:53:07. > :53:10.actually a contender at Wimbledon. I warmly recommend that. When we talk

:55:53. > :55:54.Ronaldo score? We will be back with more toasted we will start the
:55:55. > :56:04.programme but with the weather forecast, we might be on at one and
:56:05. > :56:10.off again at one minute past 1pm. Here we are, live on Centre Court,
:56:11. > :56:13.for Bouchard against Radwanska and I'm sure Anne Keothavong and Sam
:56:14. > :56:17.Smith are going to be talking about this a lot during the course of the
:56:18. > :56:20.match but, Sam, Eugenie Bouchard was going to be the next big thing and
:56:21. > :56:24.was going to replace Maria Sharapova as the poster girl for women's
:56:25. > :56:30.tennis a couple of years ago and it didn't quite happen. Why?
:56:31. > :56:35.Well, maybe expectation, maybe it was just too much, too soon. She won
:56:36. > :56:39.the juniors at Wimbledon in 2012 and two years later she was in the main
:56:40. > :56:44.final. That's coming into women's tennis and taking the game really by
:56:45. > :56:49.storm and just maybe she wasn't strong enough to handle all the Guha
:56:50. > :56:52.and noise around it. Because she is so marketable and was signed up and
:56:53. > :56:56.had huge pressures and she's talked about that a lot last year, how she
:56:57. > :57:01.was so nervous at times she couldn't even eat, it was just so much and
:57:02. > :57:06.overwhelming. That's a pretty simple it gets placing. I'm sure she could
:57:07. > :57:13.give you a more detailed one but to me, Annie, that's the bones of it.
:57:14. > :57:17.Yeah. We see that a lot with young players. I mentioned it in the
:57:18. > :57:20.previous match with Monica Puig, the first, second year on tour, they
:57:21. > :57:23.burst on the scene and make a huge impact were trying to back. The
:57:24. > :57:28.following year with all the expectations and everything else,
:57:29. > :57:33.all the commitments that are expected of them off the court, as
:57:34. > :57:39.well as on the court, it takes its toll and it takes some getting used
:57:40. > :57:44.to but we've seen Eugenie Bouchard plays better tennis this year. She's
:57:45. > :57:49.on the right path again and is reunited with her coach, who knows
:57:50. > :57:58.her so well. He worked with her when she was a little girl at his academy
:57:59. > :58:01.in Florida, from the age of 11, 12? STUDIO: Sorry to come back on that,
:58:02. > :58:05.Sam, is one of the great things, and you could say this about all sports,
:58:06. > :58:10.a lot of the guys playing in the Euros, when you are very young and
:58:11. > :58:15.suddenly you become very famous, almost the most important people are
:58:16. > :58:18.the people that you surround yourself with and they have your
:58:19. > :58:21.best interests at heart and don't allow you to be diverted from the
:58:22. > :58:29.path that you're going down. SAM SMITH: Yes, you look at the
:58:30. > :58:36.support. You look at Muguruza at Roland Garros and she has got such a
:58:37. > :58:38.strong family base behind her. You think, she has had the limelight
:58:39. > :58:44.pretty young and pretty big and should be OK and at the end of 2014,
:58:45. > :58:50.nobody could believe it but she fired her coach who took her from a
:58:51. > :58:53.junior to being one of the best players in the world, to five in the
:58:54. > :58:57.world, and it seemed from that moment, Annie, that everything went
:58:58. > :59:02.wrong. We are very pleased to see him back. Since he's been back, they
:59:03. > :59:08.reunited in Charlton a few months ago at the first of the clay-court
:59:09. > :59:12.tournaments, and we've seen glimpses of what really took her to five in
:59:13. > :59:16.the world and the grand slam finals. She does seem to be back on track.
:59:17. > :59:20.He knows her game so well, he knows her personality, what makes her
:59:21. > :59:25.tick, and that's so important for any player. Radwanska won't be
:59:26. > :59:30.taking this likely, even though she's had a couple of wins against
:59:31. > :59:35.Eugenie earlier this year in Australia, both in two sets.
:59:36. > :00:33.Eugenie, though, might fancy her chances.
:00:34. > :00:42.Genie is 22 years of age, ranked just inside the world top 50. When
:00:43. > :00:53.she was with Saviano she was ranked five in the world. Maybe the end of
:00:54. > :00:59.season finals. And what is it that is so good about her game? Her
:01:00. > :01:00.ability to take the ball on the rise and to take time away from her
:01:01. > :01:36.opponent. She's a great athlete who moves well
:01:37. > :01:41.around the court, as is Agnieszka Radwanska. She is known as the
:01:42. > :02:10.magician. She has conjured herself a couple of early break points, here.
:02:11. > :02:42.Bouchard, a great athlete. Moves well around the court.
:02:43. > :02:47.But it's her all out aggression the transfers across all services that
:02:48. > :02:55.makes her such a dangerous player to play against. -- surfaces. And an
:02:56. > :03:49.exciting player to watch. Heavy second serve. I'm amazed she's
:03:50. > :03:51.not challenging that. Oh, right not to. It's me that needs to get down
:03:52. > :04:11.to the opticians. Tough opening hold forbid -- Phil
:04:12. > :04:19.Bouchard. That might prove significant. Radwanska one of the
:04:20. > :04:22.best players in the world this year. Ranked at number three, one of the
:04:23. > :04:28.favourites were Wimbledon where she has already been a finalist. That
:04:29. > :04:43.bears out how aggressive Bouchard plays. That's from last year.
:04:44. > :04:48.Bouchard write up on that baseline. Compromise is not a big word in her
:04:49. > :05:05.dictionary, is it? There was an amazing statistic in
:05:06. > :05:11.2014 on her way to the Wimbledon final which told us she didn't hit
:05:12. > :05:18.one return of serve from behind the baseline on her way to that final.
:05:19. > :05:20.That year was always looking to pounce on everything. Did not
:05:21. > :06:23.compromise. Radwanska was also at the time last
:06:24. > :06:27.night with her partner David. She has a really good team behind her, a
:06:28. > :06:59.physio, and Thomas who has coached us such a long time.
:07:00. > :07:13.Fantastic from the Bouchard. I hope the tie isn't a bad omen. Wozniacki
:07:14. > :07:19.has already lost on this Centre Court today. It is sold out, a few
:07:20. > :07:21.of the fans having a break from a very long opening match. They'll be
:07:22. > :07:37.coming back in in a game or so. Radwanska doesn't possess a huge
:07:38. > :07:51.amount of power but she's accurate on serve. Or maybe not so!
:07:52. > :08:00.APPLAUSE Having to work quite hard in the
:08:01. > :08:10.opening service games. Safely aboard in this third-round match. Winner of
:08:11. > :08:12.this contest will play Dominika Cibulkova who won earlier today
:08:13. > :09:16.against Kateryna Bondarenko. APPLAUSE
:09:17. > :09:18.So explosive for that smash, B -- Bouchard. And not afraid of
:09:19. > :10:24.venturing forwards. Does rather go after that second
:10:25. > :10:31.serve. A couple of finals this year for Bouchard. At the start in Hobart
:10:32. > :10:38.Tasmania and then a month or so later in Kuala Lumpur. It's been a
:10:39. > :10:47.little thin on the ground since then.
:10:48. > :11:04.She was on her back fit here but didn't back-up. Held her ground on
:11:05. > :11:06.that baseline. Came up with something quite spectacular. Very
:11:07. > :11:21.little take back on that backhand. You wouldn't really know from the
:11:22. > :11:25.way she's played this week so far that she lost first round on the
:11:26. > :11:29.grass in Holland a few weeks ago, and then second round at the new
:11:30. > :11:35.tournament in my yorker. I didn't know they had any grass courts in
:11:36. > :12:20.Mallorca. She is playing well this week in Eastbourne.
:12:21. > :12:40.Just drifted. Radwanska gets the early break. Radwanska always look
:12:41. > :12:43.so call and calm. It was interesting chatting to how on Monday when it
:12:44. > :12:53.was tipping down here. Another monsoon on Monday. I said are you
:12:54. > :12:57.going to practice? She said, I'd hit enough balls I think, I do think I'm
:12:58. > :13:01.going to worry about it today. I'm just going to go to the gym. You
:13:02. > :13:07.don't often hear that on the women's tour which is practice mad. That's
:13:08. > :13:11.the beauty of experience. Radwanska is 27 now, she has run enough miles
:13:12. > :13:17.on tennis courts, she knows how to play. There's not as much urgency to
:13:18. > :13:22.just hit tennis balls for the sake of it. It's great to see her
:13:23. > :13:29.vitalise to because there was a period midway 2014, almost this time
:13:30. > :13:34.last year, where she didn't look as made to baited as we've seen her.
:13:35. > :13:39.She looked jaded with tennis, maybe lost her passion -- she didn't look
:13:40. > :13:43.as motivated. It was already getting on the grass that kick-started her
:13:44. > :13:47.season. Grass is her favourite surface. Growing up in Poland she
:13:48. > :13:53.was surrounded by clay courts but that is her least favourite surface
:13:54. > :13:59.to play on. Despite spending hours honing her game on the dirt. Just
:14:00. > :14:06.the one grass court title to her name, that came here back in 2008.
:14:07. > :14:52.The rest have all been on hard courts.
:14:53. > :15:10.They can come out of nowhere these drop shots from Radwanska. Which
:15:11. > :15:11.makes her a nightmare to play against if you're on the receiving
:15:12. > :15:24.end. I sense the feeling. She's very much old school, isn't
:15:25. > :15:29.she? There's no grunting or chats with herself at the back of the
:15:30. > :15:33.court. She is only recently just started changing her rackets with
:15:34. > :15:34.the new ball. She was never really remotely interested in her string
:15:35. > :15:48.tension or anything like that. She's a player who gets on with it.
:15:49. > :15:52.She's got that very light racket, I almost think it's like a toy racket,
:15:53. > :16:11.a five-year-old could happily play with it.
:16:12. > :16:20.APPLAUSE Great point by Bouchard. It was the
:16:21. > :16:27.return of serve that really set everything else up for her. That is
:16:28. > :16:51.what she'll look to pounce on, first off second serve return.
:16:52. > :18:14.Team Radwanska, there's Thomas Howard coach on the right, her
:18:15. > :18:19.physio and trainer in the middle, and David her boyfriend and hitter
:18:20. > :18:26.on the end. They also went a little jog along the this morning. Where
:18:27. > :18:35.you jogging? I was in the strolling camp, I'm afraid.
:18:36. > :19:10.You just sense the longer the point goes on, the more it favours
:19:11. > :19:21.Radwanska. More chance of Bouchard just making an error.
:19:22. > :19:36.In the opening 20 minutes or so they've been out here, she's played
:19:37. > :19:37.some really good tennis, great individual points, but it hasn't
:19:38. > :19:58.really gained any territory so far. She doesn't come from a tennis
:19:59. > :20:02.playing family. There were park courts very near to where she grew
:20:03. > :20:06.up in Montreal, Canada. Her brothers and sisters don't play.
:20:07. > :20:19.She has a twin sister, Beatrice, and a younger brother, William, and
:20:20. > :20:23.another sister, Charlotte. I don't know if you can spot the royal
:20:24. > :20:53.connection? I think her mother was obsessed with the Royal family!
:20:54. > :20:58.APPLAUSE Really good play from Bouchard. She
:20:59. > :21:09.just keeps it to the one break in this opening set. It's been a
:21:10. > :21:14.fascinating career so far from Genie. I did think anyone expected
:21:15. > :21:20.her to hit the worlds top ten so quickly after coming out of Genius.
:21:21. > :21:26.So tough had to regroup and the meltdown last year. It was an utter
:21:27. > :21:30.disaster. She just couldn't really find any form. Until the US Open,
:21:31. > :21:35.and then was the concussion to deal with. If you didn't hear about it,
:21:36. > :21:43.she slipped on the changing room floor late in the evening after the
:21:44. > :21:48.cleaners had cleaned the floor. It's all gone to court, she is saving the
:21:49. > :21:51.STA. She hit her head very badly and didn't play for the rest of the
:21:52. > :21:55.year. She was still struggling at the start of this year, had to be
:21:56. > :22:04.monitored carefully. It's turning into a movie script. Seems to be
:22:05. > :22:07.fully recovered now. Just more focused, she looks fitter, stronger,
:22:08. > :22:18.and that has made a huge difference as well I think, this year. Great to
:22:19. > :22:25.see her back with Saviano. He's a huge fan of this tournament. He was
:22:26. > :22:31.saying, do the girls know how lucky they are to play to packed houses
:22:32. > :22:39.day in day out. He is known as one of the best coaches on the tour. I
:22:40. > :23:22.hope she calls him answer a bit of on-call coaching.
:23:23. > :23:37.Clean and clinical from the Pole. Hasn't seemed to let superstardom go
:23:38. > :23:40.to her head, she is still studying for a degree in tourism which she
:23:41. > :23:51.studies when she gets back at the end of the year.
:23:52. > :23:58.Do you think she'll ever complete that degree? I haven't asked her
:23:59. > :24:02.recently. I think there might be still a few modules. There is one
:24:03. > :24:07.benefit of superstardom, she can say to them, be back in December, can I
:24:08. > :24:40.do my exams on these particular dates, please. They allow that.
:24:41. > :25:00.She's doing a very nice job, holding the fort. Without doing too much.
:25:01. > :25:23.Not fazed by the Bouchard court is she? -- court position, is she?
:25:24. > :25:40.UMPIRE: Ms Bouchard is challenging the call. The call is overturned.
:25:41. > :27:07.15-0. Bouchard very nicely behind
:27:08. > :27:19.Radwanska but it's still the Pole who leads by a break. I wonder what
:27:20. > :27:23.her expectations are this year, after winning the WTA finals at the
:27:24. > :27:28.end of last season in Singapore. That was unexpected, and her biggest
:27:29. > :27:33.title so far. I wonder when she was sitting at the breakfast table in
:27:34. > :27:38.January, 2016, what's going to be the priority? A Grand Slam title. I
:27:39. > :27:42.think it's noticeable how much smarter she's been about her
:27:43. > :27:46.scheduling this year. Hasn't overplayed. If there have been any
:27:47. > :27:53.niggles, in the past she's tried to play through them. Quite often with
:27:54. > :27:58.Radwanska, you see her bandaged up. And this year, any signs of any
:27:59. > :28:02.niggles or injuries, she hasn't been shy about withdrawing from
:28:03. > :28:05.tournaments to make sure she's fresh for the big ones. Wimbledon is her
:28:06. > :28:11.best chance of winning a slam. She's made it to the final before. Is that
:28:12. > :28:15.because of her game style fit to the surface or the fact she likes it?
:28:16. > :28:19.She's a natural counterpuncher. Grass isn't the first surfaced yet
:28:20. > :28:23.think about when you think about Radwanska winning titles, most of
:28:24. > :28:27.her six has come on hard courts. But it certainly is the surface she
:28:28. > :28:33.enjoys playing on, she's comfortable moving on a grass court, which are a
:28:34. > :28:40.lot of players aren't. She stayed down nice and low when it shoots
:28:41. > :28:46.through. She's just ticking over here. We haven't quite seen the best
:28:47. > :29:27.of Radwanska yet. She's got the new balls.
:29:28. > :29:34.She has this uncanny knack to keep opponents guessing, to keep them off
:29:35. > :30:03.balance. And then they end up making a mistake. Really annoying.
:30:04. > :30:10.It is casino returning, isn't it, from Bouchard? It is at times like
:30:11. > :30:15.this one I just think she has to compromise, just a little bit. Would
:30:16. > :30:23.it do her so much harm if she just backed off a little bit to give
:30:24. > :30:29.herself time? When it is good, it is great, but when she misses a few in
:30:30. > :30:40.a row... She just needs to give herself a bit
:30:41. > :30:43.of time to work the point more, rather than just being all-out
:30:44. > :30:50.aggression constantly, that would be the logic. Bouchard, serving to stay
:30:51. > :31:02.in the opening set. Radwanska's turn to hit a huge
:31:03. > :31:54.return. She does not look as if she has
:31:55. > :32:06.broken sweat yet. Rather easy for the world number three.
:32:07. > :32:16.Bouchard getting a tennis lesson out here.
:32:17. > :32:21.They had been on court for just over 30 minutes and it is the Polish
:32:22. > :32:41.woman with a three set points. That will do very nicely. Radwanska
:32:42. > :32:47.takes the opening set 6-3. That was a hugely impressive first set by
:32:48. > :33:04.Radwanska. On Court one, an equally impressive first set.
:33:05. > :33:12.This is how the results today are affecting the draw. We are hoping to
:33:13. > :33:23.have the quarterfinals, weather permitting tomorrow. The one match
:33:24. > :33:30.we are focusing on on the last 16 in the bottom half is Petra Kvitova
:33:31. > :33:55.against Joe contra. That is coming your way next. -- Johanna Konta.
:33:56. > :34:05.That will be on next after the culmination of this match. If you
:34:06. > :34:09.are a seasoned watcher of Radwanska across many years, you will know
:34:10. > :34:15.that there is no such thing as an easy game for her. If Bouchard can
:34:16. > :34:18.get back into this it could be anybody's same. Always interesting
:34:19. > :34:23.to hear the relationship between the coach and the player. Bouchard is
:34:24. > :34:29.not saying much, just listening. Let's hear what is being said. Every
:34:30. > :34:35.single point, all right? You were close the except you give a few
:34:36. > :34:39.points away. Come on, every point. Just saying that she gave too many
:34:40. > :34:45.points away and that every single point counts which is true. It was a
:34:46. > :34:50.lot better than the chapel there were at the French Open a couple of
:34:51. > :34:56.years ago, she got so annoyed at what he was saying she bashed a ball
:34:57. > :36:06.out into the food court! I think that was a good chat!
:36:07. > :36:51.This is a turn-up for the books, the first time that has made any threat
:36:52. > :37:10.to the Radwanska service game. Quite a few loose ones, you don't
:37:11. > :37:15.see any of that and Eugenie takes full advantage. Nick was saying
:37:16. > :37:20.there that she was pretty close in the first set. Did you see it like
:37:21. > :37:24.that or is that just giving her a boost? I think it is the sign of a
:37:25. > :37:29.good coach, trying to see the positives and everything! She was
:37:30. > :37:35.not close towards the end of that first set. In fact, she lost eight
:37:36. > :37:43.points in a row to lose the first set. She did not get close at all to
:37:44. > :37:48.the Radwanska service games until just then. What I like about the
:37:49. > :37:51.cultures that every time he comes on he always asks her how she is
:37:52. > :38:14.feeling. He did not get much of a response
:38:15. > :38:20.from Bouchard when he asked the question. This time. Although he has
:38:21. > :38:25.done in the past. There is nothing worse than watching on court
:38:26. > :38:32.coaching and seeing a coach come on and fire so much information to the
:38:33. > :38:56.player. Without asking for the player's opinion.
:38:57. > :39:12.Just drifted. She always seems to guess the right way! This is good
:39:13. > :39:14.from Eugenie. If she had some sleeves she would be rolling them
:39:15. > :40:49.up, working very hard now. It is an area of the game that she
:40:50. > :40:57.has really improved over the last 12 months, looking to been more
:40:58. > :41:54.aggressive, move up the court, make more things happen.
:41:55. > :42:04.I am sure somewhere she has a microchip, she is so quick to feel
:42:05. > :42:06.the match, know when and where to make some changes. She has a break
:42:07. > :42:21.back point here. She does not allow Eugenie to get
:42:22. > :42:36.away. She has a very solid support camp.
:42:37. > :42:42.Thomas has been with her for a long, long time. It was her father,
:42:43. > :42:48.Robert, who coached her and sister for the first years of her life.
:42:49. > :42:53.Glenn Thomas took over. He travelled with her a lot as a junior. That is
:42:54. > :43:01.in on the end in the grey, brown T-shirt. It is not easy that
:43:02. > :43:05.transition from dad as the coach to bring in somebody else in. It
:43:06. > :43:10.generally hasn't been that successful in women's tennis. No, it
:43:11. > :43:17.hasn't. He has also been the Polish Federation cup captain. Martina
:43:18. > :43:26.Navratilova at the start of last year, too. She has kept the coaching
:43:27. > :44:13.changes to a minimum, unlike her opponent today.
:44:14. > :44:24.She was not even looking at the ball on this volley! She is always in the
:44:25. > :45:02.right position. She reads the game beautifully, Radwanska.
:45:03. > :45:36.Well played! Bouchard really stepping up here.
:45:37. > :45:51.And again! She has the shovel out! All awkward balls are both of the
:45:52. > :45:58.players at this point. That is what this lovely, -- so lovely about
:45:59. > :46:05.grass court tennis. She has another break point.
:46:06. > :46:13.Perfect playing conditions, really for the first time this week. Barely
:46:14. > :46:21.a breath of wind, the sun has come out, the court has hardened up. It
:46:22. > :46:26.is always a great time of day to play here in East born. --
:46:27. > :47:38.Eastbourne. She really is playing some of our
:47:39. > :47:44.very best tennis right here. Now, another chance, one she has to take,
:47:45. > :48:05.you feel. Radwanska coming up with the goods
:48:06. > :48:09.when under pressure. She is so confident, Radwanska. She has won so
:48:10. > :48:24.many matches this year. The most consistent player on tour.
:48:25. > :48:31.Radwanska has reached the semifinals or better name out of the last four
:48:32. > :48:37.team tournament is. That is some serious research! I'm impressed!
:48:38. > :48:48.Going against the grain of the top players who have been so predict to
:48:49. > :48:53.ball and unreliable all season. -- unpredictable and unreliable all
:48:54. > :48:59.season. So, Radwanska way out of the very tricky service game. She now
:49:00. > :49:08.leads by one set and 2-1 in the second. It is interesting, the
:49:09. > :49:12.coaching carousel which so often gets rather busy at the end of
:49:13. > :49:19.season. Players and coaches coming and going, consultants being added
:49:20. > :49:29.and taken away. I think it is so tough to find a good coach when you
:49:30. > :49:35.are on tour. I do. A lot of the good hitting partners who then become
:49:36. > :49:41.coaches... But it is very hard to find somebody who is genuine, has
:49:42. > :49:46.your best interest at heart and has the information to help you do well.
:49:47. > :49:57.I can't imagine Thomas ever splitting up that partnership. It is
:49:58. > :50:02.great that David is travelling with her now, as well. You need to have a
:50:03. > :50:06.life of the court, as well. Also, that Radwanska has invested in
:50:07. > :50:11.having a trainer travelled with her. I mentioned earlier, there was
:50:12. > :50:17.always times when you would see Radwanska bandaged up. She always
:50:18. > :50:21.had tape on her shoulder, her thigh, Ernie, always something. Less of
:50:22. > :50:28.that these days. The training room used to stock up if the was a
:50:29. > :50:33.Radwanska week. It was an ongoing joke how much tape and her sister,
:50:34. > :50:37.her she left, would use on their toes. I am pretty sure they are
:50:38. > :50:41.still tipped up! I'm sure they are. Not a pretty sight. Bouchard playing
:50:42. > :51:34.catch up at the moment. When you are going after it as much
:51:35. > :52:25.as Bouchard does... The margins are so tight for her.
:52:26. > :52:32.She has had some really good moment in this match but she has looked
:52:33. > :52:51.like old self, but, unfortunately, too many loose ones from Bouchard.
:52:52. > :52:59.APPLAUSE. When it has been good it has been great and it has been fun
:53:00. > :53:03.to see her play these good points, but she has not been able to back it
:53:04. > :53:09.up or come up with it consistently enough to really hurt Radwanska. You
:53:10. > :53:13.get the sense that if she can play at this level she should be back in
:53:14. > :53:41.the top 20 sooner rather than later. We hope so, we like Eugenie.
:53:42. > :53:53.My goodness me! She got that totally wrong.
:53:54. > :53:59.Really struggling behind her serve now. She has look on her last three
:54:00. > :54:06.service games. Radwanska has never dropped a set against that can be --
:54:07. > :54:08.against the Canadian, including one game earlier this year, looks very
:54:09. > :56:28.comfortable in this matchup. Well, she is applying herself as he
:56:29. > :56:33.asked for and every single point. It is a difficult balancing act against
:56:34. > :56:50.the Polish woman, he gives you so little. A chance here, though.
:56:51. > :57:02.That will do nicely! Bouchard is back on track in the second set. I
:57:03. > :57:06.guess with everything she has been through over the past year, it is
:57:07. > :57:12.good to see her looking healthy and strong again. It is about results, I
:57:13. > :57:17.guess, but more about level of play now? Consistent level of play, which
:57:18. > :57:23.is something she is searching for. Even when she had her breakthrough
:57:24. > :57:27.back in 2004 team, it is not like she was performing consistently
:57:28. > :57:33.well. It was the grand slams in which he did well. Semifinals at the
:57:34. > :57:38.Australian and French, finals at Wimbledon. She was able to perform
:57:39. > :57:45.on the big stage, but wasn't able to bring that type of aggressive tennis
:57:46. > :57:49.that had won her so many matches, and the energy, into the smaller
:57:50. > :57:57.events. Somehow the motivation was not the same. She has to realise
:57:58. > :58:02.that to be able to perform well at the big tournaments each time, she
:58:03. > :58:06.still has to find a way to perform well at the smaller events more
:58:07. > :58:10.consistently. Who wins that she picks up during the course of the
:58:11. > :58:19.year will give her confidence to do so. I think that is something she is
:58:20. > :58:24.still working towards. But Bouchard has so much talent, so much skill, I
:58:25. > :58:30.have no doubt you will be back inside the world top 20 sooner or
:58:31. > :58:35.later. And a lot of charisma. I huge star back in Canada, maybe too much
:58:36. > :58:43.of a huge star last year, it was a bit overwhelming for her. We are
:58:44. > :58:44.back on serve after four bricks in the opening five games of the second
:58:45. > :59:25.set. -- breaks. She is special, isn't she,
:59:26. > :00:31.Radwanska? She has all the little toy shops. --
:00:32. > :00:32.shots. When she has got you on a string like that, you can often feel
:00:33. > :01:05.quite silly! This has suddenly turned into such a
:01:06. > :01:08.high-level match. The fans sense it as well. Packed house on this centre
:01:09. > :01:27.court at Devonshire Park. UMPIRE: Warning, Bouchard. Only
:01:28. > :01:35.allowed 20 seconds between points and she tipped over it.
:01:36. > :01:57.They always come at the wrong time, those code violations.
:01:58. > :02:09.That will do nicely. Really against the run of play, Bouchard levels up
:02:10. > :02:13.in the second set. Those code violations often feel like they come
:02:14. > :02:17.at the wrong times, but it's on those big points when they do calm
:02:18. > :02:21.and it's on those big points when players feel like they needed an
:02:22. > :02:56.extra few seconds to regroup and focus.
:02:57. > :03:02.There it is again, doesn't try to do too much on the volley, just places
:03:03. > :04:14.it in the perfect position. It's got to be this good, hasn't it?
:04:15. > :05:02.That's why Radwanska is number three in the world.
:05:03. > :05:12.So quick to change things up. Radwanska puts in an emphatic old to
:05:13. > :05:20.push ahead once more in this second set. # hold. Whenever you watch her,
:05:21. > :05:29.she does things you can't really teach, or can you? I don't think it
:05:30. > :05:35.is. She is the queen of improvising. What she is able to do on the tennis
:05:36. > :05:42.court is unorthodox a lot of the time. She's not over fussed with Tec
:05:43. > :05:48.Ni, it's instinct. I wonder, when she started playing, if her father
:05:49. > :05:53.got her and her sister to start with balloons instead of tennis balls.
:05:54. > :05:56.Balloons are great. They are something all young kids being
:05:57. > :06:03.introduced to ball games should start off with. They stay in the air
:06:04. > :06:08.for longer, they are bigger. Yeah, easier to hit if you do have a
:06:09. > :06:17.racket or something, or just with your hand. They started at four with
:06:18. > :06:22.these balloons. My niece plays tennis... She doesn't play tennis,
:06:23. > :06:28.she goes to classes to play tennis, but actually they just hit balloons
:06:29. > :06:34.around. You have a seven-month-old. I haven't introduced balloons to her
:06:35. > :06:39.yet! I expect to see balloons tied to her pram tomorrow. You will be
:06:40. > :06:44.crazy tennis ma'am. She's already got a miniature tennis racket. She's
:06:45. > :06:50.got two, I bought her one! Her favourite toy. Bouchard doing really
:06:51. > :06:57.well in the second set, coming back strongly. Needs to hang on here. On
:06:58. > :07:16.serve in the second set, a couple of breaks.
:07:17. > :07:23.Radwanska thought one of the balls earlier in the rally was long, on
:07:24. > :07:30.the baseline. Tough to tell from where we are sacked. I do like
:07:31. > :07:34.Radwanska, she's so understated. Gave a slightly agitated stair to
:07:35. > :08:15.the spot where she thought the ball bounced.
:08:16. > :08:36.There's no knowledge and from Radwanska that she's hit an shot
:08:37. > :08:46.either! -- no acknowledgement. -- an awesome shot. Does not like making
:08:47. > :08:52.mistakes. Usually you can count them per set by the handful, if that.
:08:53. > :09:22.Still got a couple of chances to serve for the match.
:09:23. > :09:29.Just build it. The scoreline a little unfair on Bouchard. -- she
:09:30. > :09:40.just pulled it. Certainly doesn't reflect how well
:09:41. > :09:45.she played in parts in the first, and certainly all the way through
:09:46. > :09:49.this second set. But Radwanska, well, she's the past master of
:09:50. > :09:52.coming through these kind of encounters and will serve now for a
:09:53. > :10:51.place in the quarterfinals. UMPIRE: Miss Bouchard is challenging
:10:52. > :10:57.the call on the right service line, the ball was called in. Very few
:10:58. > :11:02.challenges this afternoon. The umpire has done a top job in the
:11:03. > :11:05.chair. Miss Bouchard has two challenges remaining. Wishful
:11:06. > :11:33.thinking from Bouchard. Wasn't quite central enough with the
:11:34. > :11:35.approach, and far too short from Radwanska to not give Bouchard the
:11:36. > :12:00.angle to play with. I do like her finishing shots.
:12:01. > :12:04.Dismissed that particular rally. Two points away, has really had to
:12:05. > :12:13.concentrate out here, particularly in this second set.
:12:14. > :12:21.Well, she didn't have the best time in Birmingham, losing her opening
:12:22. > :12:26.match. It hasn't derailed her by the looks of things. She's really put it
:12:27. > :12:32.together out here. Match point for Radwanska.
:12:33. > :12:41.And the top seed is safely through to the last eight. A very
:12:42. > :12:47.businesslike performance from Agnieszka Radwanska. She was more
:12:48. > :12:57.solid out there. Unfortunately for Bouchard, the errors cost her in
:12:58. > :13:10.that match. Don't bet against her putting her name once again on that
:13:11. > :13:15.trophy. Great signs from Youzhny -- Youzhny
:13:16. > :13:24.She goes into Wimbledon with some confidence, but how many times have
:13:25. > :13:28.we seen this sort of performance from Radwanska? She has the type of
:13:29. > :13:32.game to really drive you up the wall. She makes it as awkward as
:13:33. > :13:39.possible out there and Bouchard felt it. At 27, just maybe that first
:13:40. > :13:45.Grand Slam is just around the corner. She's been close and who
:13:46. > :13:49.knows what is possible. She'll play Dominika Cibulkova in the next
:13:50. > :13:56.round, a very difficult matchup for her. But a great tune-up. A couple
:13:57. > :14:00.of good wins already this week and she's really enjoyed herself here
:14:01. > :14:08.once again on the grass in Eastbourne. Her 10th visit.
:14:09. > :14:12.Loves the conditions. Can you give us your assessment of the winter
:14:13. > :14:17.day? It was a really good match from the beginning to the end. She was
:14:18. > :14:21.really playing solid tennis the whole match. I'm just very happy
:14:22. > :14:26.with my game so hopefully I can play better and better. What areas of
:14:27. > :14:32.your game are you particularly happy with? I'm serving much better and
:14:33. > :14:38.that was working very well today. Keep in this match was the servers
:14:39. > :14:43.well. Very Hafeez that I was focused on till the end and I could close
:14:44. > :14:46.out the match. Your 10th appearance in Eastbourne. What do you think you
:14:47. > :14:53.learn about playing on a grass court? Every match is a challenge on
:14:54. > :14:57.the grass. Players play different types of tennis so every match is
:14:58. > :15:01.different. I'm just happy to have another couple of matches here
:15:02. > :15:06.before Wimbledon and hopefully I can play great next week as well.
:15:07. > :15:10.Dominika Cibulkova in the next round, you've met 11 times and use
:15:11. > :15:16.won seven times. You've never played on grass before, what difference
:15:17. > :15:19.will that make? We've played so many great matches. Playing against is
:15:20. > :15:25.never easy, she's a great fighter and a great game from baseline. Now
:15:26. > :15:31.is another level of the tournament so I need to play 100%. Into the
:15:32. > :15:49.quarterfinals, Agnieszka Radwanska! Thank you very much.
:15:50. > :15:57.Britain's number one Job and a Konta against Petra Kvitova is coming up
:15:58. > :16:01.next. -- Johanna Konta. Talking about Grand Slam champions, is
:16:02. > :16:06.another Grand Slam champion, Sam Stosur, who just happened to be
:16:07. > :16:11.wandering by. How are you? You've been coming here many times, do you
:16:12. > :16:15.like Eastbourne? I do, I've come here many times. I've always really
:16:16. > :16:22.enjoyed my week and had some good results. It's all is nice to come
:16:23. > :16:25.back. You always seem to embody everything stereotypically
:16:26. > :16:29.Australian. You fight and you haven't the dog in you that you will
:16:30. > :16:35.never go until you have to. Were you always like that? Yeah, I've always
:16:36. > :16:39.been pretty competitive no matter what I was doing, playing in the
:16:40. > :16:42.background with Mike -- in the playground with my brother or
:16:43. > :16:49.playing tennis, or at school, I always wanted to win. You've been on
:16:50. > :16:54.the tour non-enough to know that it's so competitive, there's no such
:16:55. > :16:59.thing as an easy game. No. The level of our tennis now is better and
:17:00. > :17:04.better every year, every decade. Maybe a person ranked 50 in the
:17:05. > :17:08.world ten years ago make not cut it now with somebody in the same
:17:09. > :17:13.position. You have to be prepared every day to have a tough battle. I
:17:14. > :17:18.was talking to Sam Smith and she said to ask you about your amazing
:17:19. > :17:25.flat in Sydney overlooking the water. How does she know! She said,
:17:26. > :17:30.what's she's still doing travelling the world when she can just sit per
:17:31. > :17:36.month -- sip a martini and look out on Bondi Beach. I love it. Results
:17:37. > :17:42.like I just had at Roland Garros and the lead up to Roland Garros, I was
:17:43. > :17:44.pleased with what I was doing. It's really enjoyable when you're
:17:45. > :17:49.competing against the best players in the world. When you're not
:17:50. > :17:55.playing well, it's harder to leave home. But I will enjoy what I do and
:17:56. > :18:00.I'm going to be a long time retired. When you won the US Open, you were
:18:01. > :18:06.the first Aussie to win a title since Evonne Goolagong. That must
:18:07. > :18:09.have been huge. It was a dream come true for me. My second Grand Slam
:18:10. > :18:14.final and that time I knew what to expect a bit more. I went out there
:18:15. > :18:19.and knew exactly what wanted to do and needed to do and I did it
:18:20. > :18:22.perfectly. If there's any time to do it it's then. It was a dream come
:18:23. > :18:29.true. Something I'll always remember. Does it change your life
:18:30. > :18:34.being a Grand Slam champion? Does it elevate you to being a bit more than
:18:35. > :18:38.you were the day before? I think a lot of other people think that. I'm
:18:39. > :18:43.still doing the same thing and five years later it hasn't changed for
:18:44. > :18:47.me. The year after you get a few extra perks on tour and people want
:18:48. > :18:52.to talk to you a bit more and if that goes away, you know where you
:18:53. > :18:55.stand again. I'm still the same player, same person, same
:18:56. > :19:00.everything, but it's something I've been able to achieve and something
:19:01. > :19:05.I'm very proud of. I didn't get a chance to ask you if this was true
:19:06. > :19:09.and there is a wizard danger at a random question. I once interviewed
:19:10. > :19:15.Frankie Dettori and on the Internet it said he had been brought up by
:19:16. > :19:23.nuns so live on television... I haven't been. I said to him, you
:19:24. > :19:28.were brought up by nuns. He said, I wasn't. I'm always wary of beating
:19:29. > :19:33.things up. But it did say that when you were 60 or whole family's house
:19:34. > :19:41.was washed away by floods. -- when you were six, your whole family's
:19:42. > :19:47.house. That is true. Do you remember it? I don't remember the night it
:19:48. > :19:50.happened. We were living on the Gold Coast and my mum and dad at
:19:51. > :19:55.management rights to a block of flats and they all went under. So we
:19:56. > :19:59.moved to Adelaide and that's where I started playing tennis. If the flood
:20:00. > :20:04.didn't happen, maybe I wouldn't have played tennis and been able to do
:20:05. > :20:08.what I do. It wasn't good for the family, but we were able to start
:20:09. > :20:15.again. Your mum and dad talk about it? Yeah, we lost a lot of photos
:20:16. > :20:18.and other things. My mum nearly lost her wedding ring and my elder
:20:19. > :20:23.brother dived in the water and found it. I'm sure it was a scary moment,
:20:24. > :20:29.but I was pretty young and don't remember it. I got folks here with
:20:30. > :20:34.you? They are, they've come over again. The last time they were here
:20:35. > :20:38.was 2004. They are loving Eastbourne, we go to Wimbledon
:20:39. > :20:42.tomorrow and then they will go on holiday. Nice for them to come over
:20:43. > :20:48.and see some tennis. Do you love having them here? Yeah, it's nice.
:20:49. > :20:52.They've come to the US Open a couple of times. They always come to the
:20:53. > :21:00.Australian Open. It's nice for them to enjoy watching me play and
:21:01. > :21:09.playing in another country. Petra Kvitova is on court and Johanna
:21:10. > :21:12.Konta will be on court shortly. Waiting to be introduced, always a
:21:13. > :21:16.nerve wracking moment. Especially here because last year was such a
:21:17. > :21:20.big moment in her career, kick-starting a run to the
:21:21. > :21:25.semifinals of the Australian Open later this year. That's coming at
:21:26. > :21:30.live in a moment. Going back to your parents, Sam, this is an
:21:31. > :21:33.extraordinary sport, there are a lot of parent-child relationships that
:21:34. > :21:39.have gone haywire in the course of tennis. Using to be happy with
:21:40. > :21:44.everything. It's a massive advantage to have that bedrock for the rest of
:21:45. > :21:48.your career. Yeah. They've always been involved in my tennis, but
:21:49. > :21:52.never my coach or necessarily travelled with me. They've always
:21:53. > :21:56.taken a really big interest, they watch all my matches at home. We've
:21:57. > :22:01.been able to have that separation where I've got my coach and my team
:22:02. > :22:06.around me, then they can enjoy it from afar. That's worked well for
:22:07. > :22:12.me. They don't really know anything about tennis as far as coaching is
:22:13. > :22:17.concerned! How much longer, obvious question. If you are loving it,
:22:18. > :22:23.semifinalist at Roland Garros, why not keep going? What will be the
:22:24. > :22:29.determining factor? Probably health and injuries. The last few years,
:22:30. > :22:32.there's been a few... Not big injuries, but niggardly things where
:22:33. > :22:40.you're not 100% for a long period of time. Touch wood I'm doing well
:22:41. > :22:43.again this year. If I'm fit and healthy and feel like I did before
:22:44. > :22:48.and that I can compete with the best in the world, I want to do it. I'd
:22:49. > :22:53.say at least another few years and then maybe a recess. As we head off
:22:54. > :22:59.to Centre Court, what's your take on this game? I think it will be tough.
:23:00. > :23:04.Petra isn't having her best year, but I'm sure when she steps on the
:23:05. > :23:08.grass court, she loves it. Jo is having a fantastic year, and playing
:23:09. > :23:14.at home on a surface she likes so hopefully it will be a good match.
:23:15. > :23:20.Sat on the fence. I'll go Jo, I'll go for the local. Great to meet you.
:23:21. > :23:25.Let's go to Sam Smith and Anne Keothavong.
:23:26. > :23:31.Always very amusing in Melbourne in January. Jo grew up in Sydney until
:23:32. > :23:36.she was 14. The Aussies were quite clean -- quite keen to claim her
:23:37. > :23:42.when she started doing well. They haven't shown much interest in the
:23:43. > :23:46.intervening years. Her colours are firmly strapped to the Great Britain
:23:47. > :23:53.flag and the Great Britain Olympic team. She'll be in Rio in a few
:23:54. > :24:01.months with Heather Watson. Tremendous reception for Jo. She is
:24:02. > :24:05.the British number one and the world number 18... A very tough assignment
:24:06. > :24:09.against the two time Wimbledon champion who really has struggled
:24:10. > :24:14.this year. Not quite sure why. She was ill at the start. She had mono
:24:15. > :24:24.last year, which took some getting over. Her ranking reflects her worst
:24:25. > :24:28.ever start to a season. 29 on the road to Singapore, which is points
:24:29. > :24:34.accumulated this year. Weighed down in terms of results this year. She's
:24:35. > :24:39.lost her aura on tour, but not on the grass court. Not on grass court.
:24:40. > :24:43.There where a Petra Kvitova on a grass court because she loves this
:24:44. > :24:50.surface. Her game is perfectly suited to the grass. It's obviously
:24:51. > :24:55.where she's had so much success, two time Wimbledon champion. That leg
:24:56. > :25:03.wasn't strapped yesterday. That right thigh. Hopefully it's nothing
:25:04. > :25:08.too Sirius for her sake. -- Sirius. I do think when players are changing
:25:09. > :25:11.surfaces more these days, particularly from the clay to the
:25:12. > :25:15.grass, they pick up so many injuries. Maybe it was always like
:25:16. > :25:18.that, but it seems to be more prevalent. They seem to be terrified
:25:19. > :25:24.of moving on it in their first couple of matches. When a grass
:25:25. > :25:28.court hasn't been played on much, it is very lush. You see more players
:25:29. > :25:33.slipping on a grass court than any other surface. They try to move like
:25:34. > :25:41.it's a hard court. That's maybe a debate for another day. What an
:25:42. > :25:47.amazing year for Jo. Climbed inside the top 50 last season. A wonderful
:25:48. > :25:52.run here last year and at the US Open. She's burst into the world's
:25:53. > :25:57.top 20 and backed up that run in Melbourne, through to the
:25:58. > :26:02.semifinals. She will be seeded 17 at Wimbledon. She's down on the roster
:26:03. > :26:05.for the Wimbledon media day this Sunday. That's quite an event in
:26:06. > :26:12.itself and she will need to be in her bubble for that one. It's
:26:13. > :26:15.wonderful to have someone you feel that can content in pretty much
:26:16. > :26:22.every tournament she plays in. She's right up there and she goes on court
:26:23. > :26:25.against Petra Kvitova, 12 months ago, you'd probably sake of it of a
:26:26. > :26:32.fairly straightforward, but it's not the case now. Give it of will be
:26:33. > :26:38.thinking, hang on, this is serious opposition. It's a transformation.
:26:39. > :26:43.When they last played at the US Open, the fourth round of the US
:26:44. > :26:48.Open, where Konta qualified and had a superb run, it was a very close
:26:49. > :26:54.run. Give it of was the winner on that particular day, 7-5, 6-3, but
:26:55. > :27:02.in the first set there wasn't a lot in it. Very close games. How would
:27:03. > :27:06.you assess Jo's opening match yesterday against the qualifier? She
:27:07. > :27:13.wasn't a qualifier, the debutant, Lesia Tsurenko. There wasn't much in
:27:14. > :27:18.it in the first place and it was a tie-break that Konta played very
:27:19. > :27:23.well. She served very well in that match yesterday. Didn't get broken
:27:24. > :27:29.once in that match. That will be key in this match today. Give it of
:27:30. > :27:36.possesses a big serve herself. -- Kvitova. Why do you think of it of
:27:37. > :27:40.has struggled so much this season? Consistency isn't really her thing.
:27:41. > :27:44.You never know what you're going to get from her from week to week. You
:27:45. > :27:49.just know she is a dangerous player and when she's on, choose
:27:50. > :27:54.unplayable. When it's off, it can be back fence tennis, but it doesn't
:27:55. > :28:00.seem to faze her much. Came through very well in the clutch yesterday in
:28:01. > :28:05.her opening match. She had a bye in the first round. Yesterday was
:28:06. > :28:12.against Timea Babos, the big hitter. Good signs after losing early in
:28:13. > :28:20.Birmingham last week. It's tough to look into the result in Birmingham
:28:21. > :28:25.last week, where she went out to a young Latvian player. Very good
:28:26. > :28:29.player, former Wimbledon junior player, Ostapenko. They were on and
:28:30. > :28:33.off the court due to rain on a number of times, tough to find any
:28:34. > :28:47.rhythm. Here there is a new team can fit of. -- Kvitova. She's taken on
:28:48. > :28:54.Frankie Srna. Esteban Karen is one half of the Spanish coaching team. A
:28:55. > :29:04.new agent for Jo. She is building a team around herself. Of course still
:29:05. > :29:09.on paper Kvitova is the favourite, but there have been Sony upsets at
:29:10. > :29:14.Eastbourne throughout the years, at the Grand Slam is. -- so many
:29:15. > :29:19.upsets. It's a pundit's nightmare. The top half is complete. This is a
:29:20. > :29:24.match from the bottom half. The winner will play the victor between
:29:25. > :30:01.Andrea Petkovic and Ekaterina Makarova.
:30:02. > :30:09.The fifth appearance here for Kvitova, the leading check they are
:30:10. > :30:19.on tour at the moment, there are five in the top 100. She was a
:30:20. > :30:21.finalist by peers -- five years ago. A couple of years later she found
:30:22. > :30:48.herself lifting the Wimbledon crown. Results have been very hard for her
:30:49. > :31:02.to come by this year. A quarterfinal in Miami probably her best effort.
:31:03. > :31:10.And a semi-indoors on the clay in Stuttgart. It has been a stop start
:31:11. > :31:15.season for her. Very strange. You feel that she has not played badly
:31:16. > :31:37.in a lot of the matches that she lost, they have been tight.
:31:38. > :31:47.This is a match where Konta can play with a bit more freedom. Yesterday
:31:48. > :31:51.we saw her look uptight, very tense until she got the first set under
:31:52. > :32:03.her belt when she was able to free up.
:32:04. > :32:14.Good start from the former finalist. And ideal time of the day, late
:32:15. > :32:18.afternoon at Devonshire Park. The wind has dropped. The court is
:32:19. > :32:23.hardening up with every ball but his head. A packed house. This is the
:32:24. > :32:31.one they have been waiting for. How lucky it is for Jo to be able to
:32:32. > :32:39.have her home just a few miles away. She lives with her parents. They
:32:40. > :32:42.moved here from Sydney when she was 14 years of age. It is very much
:32:43. > :33:24.home for her. We associate power with Kvitova
:33:25. > :33:29.whenever we talk about, but touch is something she possesses, and a lot
:33:30. > :33:31.of that. Don't underestimate her drop shots her feel around the
:33:32. > :34:07.course. -- court. Even though she can swing a little
:34:08. > :34:15.bit more freely in this match, you got this sense she was very tense
:34:16. > :34:24.yesterday, there will still be some anxiety about here.
:34:25. > :35:08.What makes her serve so dangerous is that it is so tough to read, the
:35:09. > :35:11.Konta serve. A very consistent ball toss, she can kick it, slice it,
:35:12. > :35:58.flatten it out. She has a great physique, Jo. Five
:35:59. > :36:13.feet 11, 180 centimetres, good athlete.
:36:14. > :36:35.She works and practices these days in the north-west of Spain, which is
:36:36. > :36:40.actually in altitude. She trains at altitude the weather to Spanish
:36:41. > :36:52.coaches. APPLAUSE. -- with her to Spanish
:36:53. > :36:59.coaches. What a nice start. I did not realise her paternal grandfather
:37:00. > :37:04.played for Hungary. One of the famous 1950s Hungarian team that did
:37:05. > :37:09.so well at the World Cup. I am not up on the 1950s football but any
:37:10. > :37:15.mention of Hungary at that time is very impressive. That must be why
:37:16. > :38:03.she gets a few of her athletic genes from!
:38:04. > :38:09.She knew when she hit it, didn't she? It looks like she has found a
:38:10. > :38:40.very good early serving rhythm here. It is not unusual to see players
:38:41. > :38:42.with a ball on the court like this. It just diverted from its path,
:38:43. > :39:00.didn't it? APPLAUSE. It has been good to see
:39:01. > :39:05.Petra Kvitova serve and volley more this year. It is something she has
:39:06. > :39:11.been trying to do a lot more, especially since she squirted with
:39:12. > :39:15.her coach, a former top 20 doubles player. It has always been on the
:39:16. > :39:23.table, he has been wanting her to do it for a long time. -- she started
:39:24. > :39:45.with her coach. She did not play here last year. Had
:39:46. > :39:51.to pull out with illness. Had to pull out in the quarterfinals the
:39:52. > :39:56.previous year against Heather Watson, she was also unwell. They
:39:57. > :40:06.will need to wrap up in cotton wool this week.
:40:07. > :40:19.Good start for Kvitova on her return to Devonshire Park.
:40:20. > :40:26.What is so lovely about Petra Kvitova, top-class sportswoman, but
:40:27. > :40:30.so popular and respected, not just amongst her peers but amongst her
:40:31. > :40:36.fellow athletes from the Czech Republic, which I find remarkable
:40:37. > :40:42.because she always seems to be them! She has a great record, yes. She is
:40:43. > :40:46.very laid-back, down to earth, easy-going, easy to talk to. That is
:40:47. > :40:52.what makes her so popular with her peers. She is not like A*. She comes
:40:53. > :40:58.from the eastern part of the Czech Republic, where her father used to
:40:59. > :41:04.coach, but is also the vice mayor at the moment. She has two older
:41:05. > :41:08.brothers who used a head with her. She did not move to the National
:41:09. > :41:13.tennis Centre until she was 16. These days she has an apartment in
:41:14. > :41:20.Monte Carlo, properties all over the world and is a superstar back home.
:41:21. > :41:24.A big life change for Petra. I remember seeing her players a
:41:25. > :41:27.16-year-old when she got a wildcard at a Challenger Event in the Czech
:41:28. > :41:34.Republic and is she was so in thrall, but she knew she was going
:41:35. > :41:39.to go on and achieve rate things. I could not say about you was going to
:41:40. > :41:43.be a Wimbledon champion, but she had a huge serve, huge strikes, and she
:41:44. > :41:51.was dangerous, you could see it from an early age. I saw her at eight
:41:52. > :41:54.team and a dash eight team Anna Todd if she ever gets the ball near the
:41:55. > :43:29.court, she will be a champion! She has already thrown in a couple
:43:30. > :43:33.of double faults. I wonder how much pressure she is feeling on the
:43:34. > :43:59.second serve. Kvitova really does give a higher hit. -- gave it a hit.
:44:00. > :44:06.She managed to cope with a break point in turn asked him, she has a
:44:07. > :44:19.couple more to deal with. The harsh in her
:44:20. > :44:32.You need to be that good when you're up against Kvitova. If you put a
:44:33. > :44:45.serve into her hitting zone it'll come back with a lot of interest.
:44:46. > :46:48.You see this space, you open up the court well like Konta did here, you
:46:49. > :46:53.need to take your chances, which is exactly what she did. That is
:46:54. > :47:03.classic Jo, that has always been her pattern of play.
:47:04. > :47:43.A little bit wild from Kvitova. She is being a little bit rocked by some
:47:44. > :47:47.of these returns. Konta has had to deal with all of the break point so
:47:48. > :47:52.far in this match, but she has three of her own now. Esteban looks on. He
:47:53. > :48:10.is That was a very late call from the
:48:11. > :48:15.line judge. My goodness! Konta would have been in control of the point.
:48:16. > :48:19.That was a fantastic return. Sometimes you just need to take
:48:20. > :48:24.those on the chin. The point will be replayed.
:48:25. > :48:38.There is nice Petra, but there is a mean streak in there as well, isn't
:48:39. > :49:27.the?! -- she did not see that coming. Konta
:49:28. > :49:31.is the first to break. I really good start in this third round for the
:49:32. > :49:36.British number one. You spent many years sitting with Jo at the
:49:37. > :49:44.National tennis Centre, hitting with, what issue like to be around?
:49:45. > :49:56.She is one of the most active -- meticulous people you could ever
:49:57. > :50:05.meet. She is disciplined. She would practice for hours, I practised for
:50:06. > :50:09.hours with her. What has happened in the past 12 months has been
:50:10. > :50:13.incredible, what she has been able to achieve I never would have called
:50:14. > :50:19.it. She used to fret a lot, whether it was on the back are scored, match
:50:20. > :50:26.court, if things weren't perfect, it used to really get to her and you
:50:27. > :50:30.could see, because she is naturally highly strung, she will admit that
:50:31. > :50:38.herself, you can't always be perfect. You control what you can
:50:39. > :50:43.control, which he is better at doing now, and for the rest you have to go
:50:44. > :50:48.with the flow. She talks about it a lot, not getting too high or too
:50:49. > :50:55.low, trying to stay on an even keel. That is what she credits her success
:50:56. > :51:00.towards. The work that she has done away from the tennis courts on the
:51:01. > :51:02.mental side, she is so much stronger now in the head than she ever used
:51:03. > :51:35.to be. Yes, and again, from Kvitova. What
:51:36. > :51:39.is the strategy for Konta? She has to weather the storm and accept that
:51:40. > :51:46.Kvitova will come up with some fantastic points. For Konta, on her
:51:47. > :51:51.service game she has to make sure she hits her spot on that service,
:51:52. > :51:54.particularly on the first serve. That will be key for her. Also,
:51:55. > :52:05.holding her ground. I don't think she necessarily has to
:52:06. > :52:09.be right on the baseline all the time because the weight of shot from
:52:10. > :52:13.Kvitova is something else. Having been on the receiving end and
:52:14. > :52:21.feeling like I was going to topple over with some of her strikes!
:52:22. > :52:30.It is important to recover well. Give yourself a bit of time on these
:52:31. > :52:34.points. The ball will come through hard and deep from Kvitova, but make
:52:35. > :52:37.sure didn't too much ground by getting stuck too far up on the
:52:38. > :53:11.baseline. There has been a double fault in
:53:12. > :54:03.each of her service games so far, from Konta.
:54:04. > :54:25.Konta did a great job holding her room because there was a barrage of
:54:26. > :54:29.huge strikes coming from Kvitova from the back of the court. A huge
:54:30. > :55:06.point to play at 15-30. APPLAUSE.
:55:07. > :55:16.She does make the most of those long levers, Kvitova.
:55:17. > :55:30.Another opportunity for Kvitova on the Konta serve.
:55:31. > :55:44.That was great from Konta. -- brave. Break point down, not afraid to go
:55:45. > :55:51.for it. Straight into this space, which is what you have to do against
:55:52. > :56:15.Kvitova, keeper on the move. -- keep her on the move.
:56:16. > :56:30.Good challenge! The point is not being replaced. -- replayed. She is
:56:31. > :56:41.always very accepting of the decision from the umpire.
:56:42. > :56:59.To doing brilliantly here. She backs up her break in style.
:57:00. > :57:06.It is extraordinary to see that she is in the lead in this opening set
:57:07. > :57:10.because she has faced quite a barrage, but has held her ground
:57:11. > :57:13.well and it is Kvitova now who might be a little bit frustrated out here
:57:14. > :57:36.with a lot of work to do in the opening set.
:57:37. > :58:25.Very close. It was some swing at the ball, wasn't it? A home run and type
:58:26. > :58:33.of swing. Never too much margin when Kvitova is around. Another good
:58:34. > :58:34.challenge from Konta. It has been a real feature of the set, Kvitova
:58:35. > :59:26.just missing. You she misses again! Some of these
:59:27. > :59:34.close misses she said our credit to Konta for the number of balls she's
:59:35. > :59:39.been able to put back into court. Her defensive play.
:59:40. > :59:43.Forcing Kvitova to go for more. The Centre Court crowd really sensing
:59:44. > :59:45.something here. A couple of chances to go up a double break in this
:59:46. > :00:07.opening set. Konta far too much the Kvitova at
:00:08. > :00:15.the moment and she will serve for the second set. UMPIRE: New balls,
:00:16. > :00:19.please. (STUDIO), summer, beautiful weather,
:00:20. > :00:23.blue skies, the court looking magnificent, a packed house and a
:00:24. > :00:27.British tennis player playing tremendous tennis, but sadly we will
:00:28. > :00:32.have to leave this in a couple of minutes. Coverage will continue
:00:33. > :00:36.online and on and connected TV. For satellite and cable viewers only,
:00:37. > :00:44.this match is available on the red button.
:00:45. > :00:53.That's how you can follow Johanna Konta against Petra Kvitova. The
:00:54. > :00:58.British number one is leading 5-2 and about to serve for the set.
:00:59. > :01:00.We'll be back with you tomorrow for the quarterfinals at 1pm. That's on
:01:01. > :01:24.BBC Two. It's been quite some 30 minutes or
:01:25. > :01:28.so for the British number one, Johanna Konta, who was under the
:01:29. > :01:38.cosh in her opening three service games. She had such a job to hold
:01:39. > :01:40.onto them, plenty of clutch moments. She has just worked so hard. She's
:01:41. > :01:53.got everything right out there. Kept her head together. She finds
:01:54. > :02:29.herself now serving for this opening set. New balls.
:02:30. > :02:38.There is a huge difference between points won behind the first serve
:02:39. > :02:39.and second serve for Konta. Only won one point from six behind her
:02:40. > :03:17.second. She is winning over 75% of points
:03:18. > :03:23.behind her first serve, though. She's been so accurate. Really
:03:24. > :03:28.trimming the reaction time Kvitova has with those big swings. We spoke
:03:29. > :03:31.about it at the start and it's been key in this match. It's got her out
:03:32. > :04:10.of trouble on a number of occasions. That might be one of the liabilities
:04:11. > :04:12.of that extravagant ball bouncing routine. I'll ask you about that
:04:13. > :04:27.later! No, not the right choice of shot
:04:28. > :04:32.that time from Konta. She's faced break points in all of her service
:04:33. > :04:37.games so far in this set and here we are again. Kvitova hasn't been able
:04:38. > :05:13.to convert. What can she do here? Real frustration for the former
:05:14. > :05:19.finalist. Great defence once again from Konta. That's been a huge
:05:20. > :05:26.improvement over the last 18 months, too. How much stronger she is when
:05:27. > :05:28.she's pushed off the court. Her ability to make her opponent play
:05:29. > :05:42.one more ball. (STUDIO) well, Johanna Konta is two
:05:43. > :05:46.points away from this first set. If you're a bit confused about where
:05:47. > :05:51.you can now watch this match, just go on the BBC website. Go online to
:05:52. > :05:59.the BBC sport website and you can watch the match to its conclusion.
:06:00. > :06:02.It's also available on connected TV, Sky, free sat and virgin. She is one
:06:03. > :06:08.point away from the Britain's best athletes
:06:09. > :06:11.head to Birmingham to compete for a place at the
:06:12. > :06:15.Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.
