:00:38. > :00:45.A day and a half a brain means that we get to Thursday at Eastbourne and

:00:46. > :00:48.it is manic - matches, people, players everywhere. It's crazy. -- a

:00:49. > :01:20.day and a half of rain. What a way to finish things off for

:01:21. > :01:27.Johanna Konta. She has got it. What an achievement. Good afternoon from

:01:28. > :01:33.Devonshire Park. The British number one against the French Open champion

:01:34. > :01:37.tops the bill today, and it should be a thrilling afternoon here. We

:01:38. > :01:44.have been playing for a couple of hours, and there is a glimmer of

:01:45. > :01:47.sunshine behind me. We should be back on schedule by the end of

:01:48. > :01:55.today. One big name has gone out today, Agnieszka Radwanska, a former

:01:56. > :02:01.champion here, who lost in straight sets to American Lauren Davies, who

:02:02. > :02:07.belies her size. 6-1 in the second set there. That was an unexpected

:02:08. > :02:09.result, but by and large, things have gone pretty much according to

:02:10. > :02:14.plan here at Eastbourne over the first few days, between the showers.

:02:15. > :02:21.That is how the top half of the draw looks. We are at the stage of the

:02:22. > :02:30.last 16. The winner of Kerber's match will play Ostapenko. It is

:02:31. > :02:33.worth repeating that from day one the quality of the draw has made

:02:34. > :02:40.this like Wimbledon by the sea this week. You can see that on Centre

:02:41. > :02:46.Court, the first match we will see at some point in the next few

:02:47. > :02:58.minutes is Johanna Konta against Jelena Ostapenko, followed by an

:02:59. > :03:11.either up or match. -- and either -- an either or match.

:03:12. > :03:23.I'm delighted to say that alongside me, and obviously tailored by the

:03:24. > :03:28.same Savile Row Company, Leon Smith, the Davis Cup captain. And we're

:03:29. > :03:36.wearing the same shoes? I am just taking tips! Big Davis Cup news

:03:37. > :03:44.today, kind of out of the blue, almost, with the ITF announcing that

:03:45. > :03:48.the final of the Davis Cup and the Fed cup should be played at a

:03:49. > :03:54.neutral venue, and they have chosen Geneva for the first three years.

:03:55. > :03:59.What was your reaction when you heard? I am not overly shocked

:04:00. > :04:04.because it has been talked about for a long time. I would not say there

:04:05. > :04:09.has been a formal consultation process, but I have had various

:04:10. > :04:15.meetings and conversations with the likes of the ITF president, David

:04:16. > :04:21.Hagerty, so I am not shocked. From the point of view of the players,

:04:22. > :04:25.what will happen with players committing to the Davis Cup, which

:04:26. > :04:29.ever wants to see? There will have to be information. It is all very

:04:30. > :04:33.well saying a neutral venue, but the initial reaction from players will

:04:34. > :04:38.be, we don't like that. I have seen some reaction from players, saying

:04:39. > :04:41.that they have destroyed the cup and this is insanity, some more

:04:42. > :04:46.vitriolic comments as well. It is all very well when Great Britain

:04:47. > :04:50.play Belgium in Ghent, because you get a great event with a great

:04:51. > :04:56.atmosphere, but if you ended up with the USA against Argentina in Geneva,

:04:57. > :05:03.that will be a nonevent, won't it? By playing it in a neutral venue,

:05:04. > :05:05.what does that secure for the players, from the various

:05:06. > :05:12.federations who have to travel differences? I can't go back to the

:05:13. > :05:18.players now and say, OK, this isn't hugely popular, but in terms of

:05:19. > :05:23.ranking points, purse strings, this is what it could look like you, and

:05:24. > :05:28.then they could put their energy into coming up with ways of dealing

:05:29. > :05:31.with it. There is a big debate about whether Davis Cup fits into the

:05:32. > :05:35.calendar. The thing that sets it apart is the atmosphere, the crowd,

:05:36. > :05:42.the gladiatorial nature, the nationality element, which we don't

:05:43. > :05:49.have in the normal treadmill of tennis. If you suddenly play it in a

:05:50. > :05:54.neutral venue, it takes away part of the reason for playing it at all.

:05:55. > :06:04.That is why people are sceptical. We played France, and the atmosphere

:06:05. > :06:07.was unbelievable. It was the fact that it was in France, in a great

:06:08. > :06:12.venue, and everyone was passionate about it. I don't know how we will

:06:13. > :06:16.get fans to the new venue, what proportion of tickets there will be.

:06:17. > :06:20.It is the trickling information. I get the impression from you that you

:06:21. > :06:26.don't think this will happen. I think it might happen, but we need

:06:27. > :06:33.to see the information. It might be sounding the death knell of the

:06:34. > :06:36.Davis Cup. I hope not. If there is a huge amount of money brought in that

:06:37. > :06:41.can rival what the players are getting week in week out, because it

:06:42. > :06:47.is not worth it for the top players, let's be honest. The top players

:06:48. > :06:52.play because of the fans and the experience. If you put the Davis Cup

:06:53. > :07:05.and FA Cup finals together, does that give it credence? -- the Fed

:07:06. > :07:10.cup. You can promote tennis around those events. It is like World Cup

:07:11. > :07:18.finals, there can be a lot more activity. We saw pictures of Andy

:07:19. > :07:22.Murray, that unforgettable lob to win the Davis Cup, but an

:07:23. > :07:28.announcement this morning that he will not play the second exhibition

:07:29. > :07:33.match he was scheduled to play because of the continuation of this

:07:34. > :07:37.hip injury. People are saying at home, this is all sounding rather

:07:38. > :07:45.alarming. Are we being unduly alarmed here, or is there actually

:07:46. > :07:49.something perhaps seriously wrong? Everyone looks forward to Wimbledon

:07:50. > :07:52.a lot because of Andy Murray, having won it twice, it is his best

:07:53. > :07:58.surface, and he loves the event, but this is not ideal. He hasn't played

:07:59. > :08:00.as much tennis as he would have liked, both in competition, where he

:08:01. > :08:06.likes getting matches under his belt... And we saw him losing at

:08:07. > :08:10.Queen's. He could go to Wimbledon having played just one match and

:08:11. > :08:16.having had one defeat. Which is why he wants to get more practice in. He

:08:17. > :08:19.puts a lot of pride and effort into doing hours on the court, and when

:08:20. > :08:24.you take that away, you need to build up to it. In Paris, people

:08:25. > :08:26.were questioning his form, the number of matches he had played, and

:08:27. > :08:32.I don't see it being any different at the moment. If he navigates his

:08:33. > :08:39.way through those early rounds, we will see him build on servers that I

:08:40. > :08:43.think he is the best on. Because it is Wimbledon, and Andy has won it

:08:44. > :08:50.twice, and everything else, how much does it matter to him to be in peak

:08:51. > :08:54.condition come Monday or Tuesday? It is his home tournament, and he has

:08:55. > :08:59.had his greatest success there, so of course, he wants to be in peak

:09:00. > :09:03.condition. He has so much experience of how you go through the fortnight,

:09:04. > :09:06.so if you can work your way through early on, build your confidence and

:09:07. > :09:10.your hours on court, that is how we will see him work his way into this

:09:11. > :09:17.tournament again. Great to have you here. You will be commentating as

:09:18. > :09:20.well, so we will talk more later about your involvement with Kyle

:09:21. > :09:24.Edmund, and we will talk about one or two signed out there that had

:09:25. > :09:29.been encouraging this week. We have two big names in the British game

:09:30. > :09:34.taking part today. We are going to see Johanna Konta later Ron against

:09:35. > :09:42.Jelena Ostapenko. That is the big match on Centre Court but asked. And

:09:43. > :09:47.then -- later on. Then Heather Watson will be in action on Court

:09:48. > :09:52.number four, which is sadly not covered by TV cameras, but we will

:09:53. > :09:57.update you on how she gets on. We will show you live Caroline

:09:58. > :10:01.Wozniacki in action, and here is her first set point, against Elena

:10:02. > :10:08.Vesnina, which he won 6-1. An emphatic first set. That is taking

:10:09. > :10:15.place on Court Number One. Here we are at 3-1 in the second set. Gigi

:10:16. > :10:20.Salmon and Sam Smith are in the commentary box.

:10:21. > :10:31.COMMENTATOR: Good afternoon everybody. A tough time out here for

:10:32. > :10:34.Elena Vesnina. She is a break down in the second set and facing a

:10:35. > :10:48.second break point in this fifth game of the second.

:10:49. > :10:56.APPLAUSE Another good save from Elena

:10:57. > :11:00.Vesnina. Sam Smith, the pressure is well and truly on the Russian. Yes,

:11:01. > :11:05.this is someone she has struggled with over the years, but good

:11:06. > :11:13.memories for her back in Eastbourne. And it is a surface she enjoys, but

:11:14. > :11:18.so does Caroline. The problem she has is that was the Aki knows

:11:19. > :11:23.exactly how to play her. Caroline plays it directly down the middle.

:11:24. > :11:28.You do not want to play with width with Vesnina, because you can always

:11:29. > :11:32.see her aiming down the line. She loves the", was the ackee, and very

:11:33. > :11:43.smart match player, and she has Vesnina's number. -- was the

:11:44. > :11:56.... A great second set from Vesnina, under pressure, says a third break

:11:57. > :12:00.point in this game. Vesnina is the 16th seed. She had a bye in the

:12:01. > :12:50.first round. And there it is - a lovely pass from

:12:51. > :12:54.Caroline Wozniacki. A pump of the fest, a little apology on the way

:12:55. > :12:58.back to the chair, but all that matters for Caroline Wozniacki is

:12:59. > :13:01.that she now leads by one set and a double break. Sam, I would like to

:13:02. > :13:08.have a word about conditions, because we started the week like we

:13:09. > :13:14.were in Miami - sunny, hot, lovely - then it was a complete wash-out.

:13:15. > :13:18.Yesterday, not much of a breeze. And today, conditions have changed once

:13:19. > :13:27.again, a little more breeze. It is also cooler. Players are not

:13:28. > :13:29.terribly keen. They will be glad it is not too windy, although yesterday

:13:30. > :13:39.was terribly still. The breeze should blow the rain clouds away.

:13:40. > :13:42.You can always banked on Caroline Wozniacki, because she is a gritty

:13:43. > :13:46.cell. When everyone is moaning that they don't have enough time to

:13:47. > :13:50.practice or stretch, or that it is raining or cold, she is like, I am

:13:51. > :13:55.not too worried about that, and she will be on an indoor court or in the

:13:56. > :14:01.gym. She is a cup half full kind of lady. There is this wittiness, this

:14:02. > :14:06.resilience, about Caroline that maybe we don't talk enough about.

:14:07. > :14:10.She is someone you can rely on, and she will get on with it. If

:14:11. > :14:14.conditions stay like this, you have to back her picking up another

:14:15. > :14:20.Eastbourne title, because she is left standing when everyone else is

:14:21. > :14:29.standing around complaining. No complaints from the Dane at the

:14:30. > :14:37.moment. The winner of this will face either Simona Halep or Svetlana

:14:38. > :15:00.Pironkova, a former finalist at Wimbledon.

:15:01. > :15:07.You can tell the conditions are cooler, the players wearing

:15:08. > :15:08.long-sleeved tops out there. We saw Lauren Davis out earlier with

:15:09. > :15:36.leggings on underneath the skirt. Yes, we have moved on a long way.

:15:37. > :15:42.There is Dad, a firm fixture in the Vesnina camp. We have moved a long

:15:43. > :15:52.way since back in the day. You would throw up tracksuit top on 20 years

:15:53. > :15:57.ago. It billowed up and you felt you were a stuffed turkey if you had a

:15:58. > :16:00.jumper underneath it. They have these Lycra, skintight tops now. A

:16:01. > :16:16.much better look. If you had a choice, you would not

:16:17. > :16:23.go for the stuffed Christmas turkey look, would you? That was a smart

:16:24. > :16:28.point from Wozniacki. She is far too consistent for Vesnina. Vesnina

:16:29. > :16:40.cannot hit enough winners versus her errors. Wozniacki works it up and

:16:41. > :16:43.down the middle. Talking about how hard Caroline Wozniacki works, she

:16:44. > :16:48.has 25 singles titles, the most without having won a Grand Slam. She

:16:49. > :17:00.is a worker. She is a former world number one.

:17:01. > :17:08.There it is, a comfortable hold. She drops just four points on serve in

:17:09. > :17:12.the first set, around the same in the second. She is one game away

:17:13. > :17:17.from booking her place in the quarterfinals, and that would be one

:17:18. > :17:39.better than last year's exit at this stage.

:17:40. > :17:50.Too many of those for Vesnina in this match. That is double fault

:17:51. > :17:53.number five. I was adding one onto her total. It is not as bad as I

:17:54. > :18:20.thought. A little bit of luck everybody

:18:21. > :18:27.needs. I don't think it is enough to get her back in this contest. Yes,

:18:28. > :18:31.Caroline is relentless. Wonderful concentration and an outstanding

:18:32. > :18:34.match player. Pretty much back to her best, or I would say, better

:18:35. > :18:45.than ever, the way she is hitting the ball these days.

:18:46. > :18:53.Vesnina has had a good couple of years, getting her ranking up to as

:18:54. > :18:57.high as 13 in March, a career high. She is currently sitting at 16. She

:18:58. > :19:00.took her biggest title to date in the singles at Indian Wells earlier

:19:01. > :19:29.this year on the hardcourt. Yes, played so well at Wimbledon

:19:30. > :19:31.last year. She is someone who has developed later in her career with

:19:32. > :19:43.her confidence and game style. Good use of the court. We know she

:19:44. > :19:47.has good hands at the net, Elena Vesnina. She is a champion in

:19:48. > :19:52.doubles Grand Slam level, winning a gold medal at the Rio Olympics. You

:19:53. > :19:55.have to think about when you come up against Caroline Wozniacki, it must

:19:56. > :20:00.be frustrating, because she is like a wall. She will run and run all day

:20:01. > :20:04.long. She is one of their best athletes, with a huge engine,

:20:05. > :20:13.stamina and a willingness to run. I kind of suspect that Caroline, I

:20:14. > :20:23.wouldn't put past her, there is a party tonight, and I think she might

:20:24. > :20:28.go up there and come back before her match tomorrow. She is playing as

:20:29. > :20:33.if, yes, I have got the dress ready. It is only an hour up the road...

:20:34. > :20:37.And if you have had the dress for a while, and it could be the one

:20:38. > :20:43.opportunity to wear the dress, if there is a window, you take it. And

:20:44. > :20:49.she is creating that window if she finishes this right now. She will be

:20:50. > :20:55.saying to her dad, who is the coach, I will be back and in bed on time. I

:20:56. > :21:01.will be ready for the final. She is always party- ready, and I say that

:21:02. > :21:06.in a positive way. She's great with the media, gives an awful lot of the

:21:07. > :21:10.tour. She appeared on the front cover of a magazine in Denmark with

:21:11. > :21:16.not a lot on, which has caused quite a fuss over there, but she looks

:21:17. > :21:21.incredible. Arms and legs strategically placed, I would say,

:21:22. > :21:26.from that shot. But it looks fantastic. Serving out for a place

:21:27. > :21:28.in the quarterfinals in her first event since her final eight showing

:21:29. > :22:22.at Roland Garros on the clay. From what I have seen from Caroline

:22:23. > :22:25.this week in practice and her early matches, she is striking the ball

:22:26. > :22:34.well, looks confident, and could have gone even further in the

:22:35. > :22:40.French. If that was her on clay, what will she be like on grass,

:22:41. > :22:46.which she has such a good game for? She will be very happy with this

:22:47. > :22:50.clean match. No dramas, last eight, tiptop. Three match points for the

:22:51. > :24:02.sixth seed, Caroline Wozniacki. And there it is, at the second time

:24:03. > :24:07.of asking, a cool, clean, composed performance from Caroline Wozniacki,

:24:08. > :24:13.a former winner here in 2009. The sixth seed, straight sets, one hour

:24:14. > :24:21.in six minutes. 6-1, 6-2, over Elena Vesnina. -- one hour and six

:24:22. > :24:32.minutes. She will be very happy with that performance. She is through

:24:33. > :24:37.into the last eight. STUDIO: That was conclusive enough. Goodness me!

:24:38. > :24:41.Barely an hour, on and off. She looks in good form. We will see

:24:42. > :24:49.Johanna Konta in action shortly, but one British player we will not see

:24:50. > :24:52.is Katie Dunn, who has just lost in qualifying at Roehampton. Leon Smith

:24:53. > :24:57.is with us here, and there is a lot to talk about in British tennis. We

:24:58. > :25:01.discussed Andy before that match, so let's go in ranking order. Kyle

:25:02. > :25:05.Edmund 's obviously lost in the first round here come you are now

:25:06. > :25:11.working with them, so is he someone now who has hit a crossroads in his

:25:12. > :25:17.career and needs to kick on somehow, and maybe you are the man to be the

:25:18. > :25:22.catalyst for that? Let's clarify - I am loosely helping him in my role as

:25:23. > :25:26.Davis Cup captain. He recently finished working with Ryan Jones,

:25:27. > :25:30.who did a terrific job, but these things happen. The life span is

:25:31. > :25:35.about 18 months on the men's tour, so we shouldn't be surprised by that

:25:36. > :25:40.change. He is now looking for a new situation, so I am helping very

:25:41. > :25:45.loosely. Kyle is going at his own place. Some players, if they have a

:25:46. > :25:48.certain characteristic that they shook through, he is making

:25:49. > :25:59.progress. He might be a bit sticky where he at just now. He has the

:26:00. > :26:04.right mindset. All the predictions that he is a top 20 player, you

:26:05. > :26:08.don't see any reason to revise that? Know, when you see him practice and

:26:09. > :26:12.some of the matches he has won this year, he came alive at the French

:26:13. > :26:16.Open, he gets too many good results, and he also pushes the top players

:26:17. > :26:22.hard, which is a good indicator. That shows that he has good weapons.

:26:23. > :26:26.Dan Evans, from one extreme to the other, the LTA took the media out

:26:27. > :26:31.for a bite to eat on Monday night, and the subject of Dan Evans came

:26:32. > :26:34.up. There was quite a vitriolic discussion taking place, with a lot

:26:35. > :26:39.of people thinking he has had so many chances and he has shot himself

:26:40. > :26:45.in the foot, basically, by testing positively for cocaine. Other people

:26:46. > :26:48.say that we need to be more conciliatory and understand that he

:26:49. > :26:54.is still a young guy, that he makes mistakes - whether you sit? I have a

:26:55. > :27:00.different relationship than many would have with Dan. I have known

:27:01. > :27:05.him well since he was 13, and he has gone through many ups and downs, and

:27:06. > :27:09.this is obviously a low point, the lowest that can get. It is a sad

:27:10. > :27:15.situation. Everything in front of him, everything. Even this year, he

:27:16. > :27:18.is in the top 50 and started the year well. The important thing from

:27:19. > :27:24.his point of view is, he has put his hand up, and he has to. He has made

:27:25. > :27:29.a stupid mistake and he will pay a price for that. How big a price

:27:30. > :27:35.should he pay, do you think? It is not for me to say. What ever the ITF

:27:36. > :27:40.end up giving him as a suspension, that is up to them, but he will

:27:41. > :27:45.serve it, and during that time, it is a question of us offering

:27:46. > :27:48.support, education, as we talked about, with the hope being that he

:27:49. > :27:55.will come back. He can come back but it will be tough, starting at zero

:27:56. > :27:59.and working through. He has done it, not from this low a point before,

:28:00. > :28:03.but it is possible and he will have to take responsibility for his

:28:04. > :28:11.actions. Have you spoken to him since it was announced? Yeah. How is

:28:12. > :28:14.he? He is gutted. He knows he has made a mistake. It is a really sad

:28:15. > :28:21.situation because we have all seen him groaning as a player, and this

:28:22. > :28:25.is... It will hit him hard, and he knows that, and he will have to take

:28:26. > :28:34.whatever comes his way. OK, talking of British players, Jelena

:28:35. > :28:41.Ostapenko... Maybe one day she will be an honorary Brit. She is walking

:28:42. > :28:48.on court to play Johanna Konta, who will appear shortly, I'm sure. Here

:28:49. > :28:59.is the reception for the local girl. She looked very impressive in her

:29:00. > :29:03.first match a couple of days ago. A gentleman walked in who had a

:29:04. > :29:08.sizeable bets on her to win. The odds were great, she's 5-2 favourite

:29:09. > :29:13.to beat the champion here in Eastbourne, which shows the kind of

:29:14. > :29:17.form she is in. Going back to the men's game, Dan Evans being out of

:29:18. > :29:20.the equation, does that mean that you, as Davis Cup captain, will

:29:21. > :29:37.start campaigning ever more eagerly to get Ali jazz playing? We help and

:29:38. > :29:44.support where we can, and the door is not shut. We have to keep looking

:29:45. > :29:49.at ways to keep the dialogue going. Is it opens like this are like that,

:29:50. > :29:58.the dog? It is narrowing, but there is a possibility. We have had

:29:59. > :30:07.discussions with the idea. -- the door. It is not closed yet. At some

:30:08. > :30:11.point in the future, the next generation will have to play in the

:30:12. > :30:15.Davis Cup. J Clark, he was in the last round of qualifying at

:30:16. > :30:16.Wimbledon, and most people watching at the moment will not know anything

:30:17. > :30:32.about him, so tell us about him. Jay is from derby come he works very

:30:33. > :30:39.closely with his family, just turned 19, he has recruited a coach for 25

:30:40. > :30:44.weeks a year to add some experience into the coaching team, and that's

:30:45. > :30:47.working well. I actually brought him into the last Davis Cup match

:30:48. > :30:51.against France, and he was absolutely fantastic, and you could

:30:52. > :30:54.see the qualities. He's got a lot of points from the Futures tour, which

:30:55. > :30:59.is the normal route for someone coming out of juniors, and just

:31:00. > :31:03.started to play Challengers recently, and just starting to find

:31:04. > :31:07.his feet. There was a lot of healthy discussion around coming into wild

:31:08. > :31:11.cards, with the All England Club, and it was decided that qualifying

:31:12. > :31:16.felt right for this stage. And actually, if he can get through this

:31:17. > :31:19.match which he is set and a up come he will have won a couple of

:31:20. > :31:24.matches... We're just hearing, he's serving for the match. It is

:31:25. > :31:29.absolutely terrific he's a terrific lad who is working hard, with a good

:31:30. > :31:34.family and coach, and he has got a game. And I think this is a better

:31:35. > :31:38.route for someone, winning a couple of matches, if he can get through

:31:39. > :31:41.three matches, best-of-five sets, that is a signal of intent. And

:31:42. > :31:46.actually, Andy Murray has had a huge influence on Kyle Edmund, and we can

:31:47. > :31:50.see a picture from the French Open of Jay with Andy. Andy is an

:31:51. > :31:59.enthusiastic supporter of him as well? Yeah, he knew what he was like

:32:00. > :32:03.at Davis Cup, which Andy often does with the younger ones, Kyle Edmund

:32:04. > :32:08.and others, he took him to Paris, for the preparation for the French

:32:09. > :32:12.Open. Unbelievable experience for them, with Andy when his team. I

:32:13. > :32:18.think he's certainly one for the future. I don't know if you had half

:32:19. > :32:22.an eye on Marcus will is against Liam Broady in qualifying late last

:32:23. > :32:25.night, when Marcus Willis came through - is he someone who has

:32:26. > :32:31.missed the boat, or is the boat perhaps still in dock and he could

:32:32. > :32:35.yet get on it? I hope so, he plays great tennis, especially on grass.

:32:36. > :32:45.We saw that last year, and he's got great personality. That was a good

:32:46. > :32:55.match, and Willis is playing well, and he will cause people problems.

:32:56. > :33:02.He's got a great serve and a lot of skill in his game. I hope he can go

:33:03. > :33:07.away now and play a fuller schedule. As we walked up here, I bumped into

:33:08. > :33:12.Michael Downey, the chief executive of the LTA, and tomorrow is his last

:33:13. > :33:17.day, and then there is a six-month hiatus before Scott Lloyd takes

:33:18. > :33:21.over. Where do you think elite men's tennis is in this country now,

:33:22. > :33:26.compared to where it was, say, five years ago, when Michael took over?

:33:27. > :33:32.Well, it's a lot better. And most of that's down to the players and their

:33:33. > :33:36.teams, obviously. We have continued to help when we can, as a

:33:37. > :33:42.federation, but once the players get into tour level, it is really an

:33:43. > :33:46.independent, professional business. Off the back of what Andy and Jamie

:33:47. > :33:50.have been doing, and what Jo Konta continue to do, there is a feel-good

:33:51. > :33:55.factor and a belief, and we have got a lot of success out of Davis Cup,

:33:56. > :33:59.with those players being able to rub shoulders with Andy and Jamie. It

:34:00. > :34:06.helps, when you hear stories like Jay Clarke Putin making inroads,

:34:07. > :34:09.because he can then access time to these players as well. There's

:34:10. > :34:13.certainly been improvements at the top end. It is a big shame what has

:34:14. > :34:17.happened to down, obviously. But there needs to be more. There's

:34:18. > :34:22.still too many gaps between where the tour players sit, and I include

:34:23. > :34:28.down in that, for now, but then there is a chunk, not much, between

:34:29. > :34:33.100 and 200. And that level is really important to have. We need to

:34:34. > :34:40.have people entering the top 100. But is where the likes of Willis and

:34:41. > :34:49.Clarke and Norrie and others will come in, hopefully. How far can Jo

:34:50. > :34:57.Konta go, in terms of a Grand Slam, is she a Grand Slam winner in

:34:58. > :35:00.waiting, do you think? I think so, I think she absolutely terrific. She

:35:01. > :35:04.has got weapons, she has got an all court game as well, which I think is

:35:05. > :35:08.very important. Because of her athleticism, she can hit big

:35:09. > :35:12.winners, and that's really important. I have been fortunate

:35:13. > :35:16.enough to spend some time with her, and I was with her as part of the

:35:17. > :35:21.team for a couple of weeks in Rio, and her hunger and drive is off the

:35:22. > :35:30.charts. We were watching the match between Kuznetsova and her opponent,

:35:31. > :35:34.which is now all square, and you were saying that Kuznetsova, you

:35:35. > :35:39.have never seen anybody with a work ethic like her, but Jo Konta is up

:35:40. > :35:48.there? She is, she works so hard. If you're going to win a slam, you have

:35:49. > :35:53.to, but she has it in abundance, Jo. She's another player, playing Fed

:35:54. > :35:58.Cup, it all helps, with the younger players. I think you're going to,

:35:59. > :36:03.take on Jo are you not? I am, and it is a great match to do some

:36:04. > :36:12.commentary on. It is a great match, and it is also a long walk! Here's

:36:13. > :36:19.Karolina Pliskova. And I think this is the match point, if I'm not

:36:20. > :36:33.mistaken. It is. So, the mandatory handshake at the net, and she's

:36:34. > :36:36.through against Peng of China. And so, this is what the draw looks

:36:37. > :36:44.like, with Radwanska having gone out. Pliskova is one ahead of

:36:45. > :36:50.everybody else, into the quarterfinals. But all the players

:36:51. > :36:57.are expecting to play two matches today, although that will be

:36:58. > :37:04.dependent on how long some games go, if we have some long ones. But by

:37:05. > :37:07.and large, they are hoping that we will have the quarterfinal line-up,

:37:08. > :37:12.maybe even semifinal line-up, sorted out by the close of play today.

:37:13. > :37:17.Let's go to Centre Court, Leon Smith is on his way there, to join Sam

:37:18. > :37:22.Smith. SAM SMITH: Jo Konta came out onto

:37:23. > :37:27.this court to rapturous applause, and my goodness, when she was out

:37:28. > :37:34.here, it was a day or so ago, she was outstanding, beating hi, assist

:37:35. > :37:49.a of Romania, and it took just over an hour. -- beating Cirstea of

:37:50. > :37:53.Romania. Today, she's up against Jelena Ostapenko, a name which was

:37:54. > :37:58.sort of in the next 12 months ago as a very good junior, but now she

:37:59. > :38:03.comes here as the reigning French Open champion, this hyperactive

:38:04. > :38:08.20-year-old who is taking the tennis world by storm. We needed a new

:38:09. > :38:12.star, we have certainly got one in Jelena Ostapenko, who loves playing

:38:13. > :38:17.on the grass. She's an absolute star, but she's got a very tough

:38:18. > :38:23.assignment here, in Britain's number one. Ostapenko won the toss, elected

:38:24. > :39:21.to receive. It will be Jo Konta get this third round match under way.

:39:22. > :39:31.Jo comes here as part of a pretty good grass court season. She went up

:39:32. > :39:32.to Nottingham, and did well, at Nottingham, not so good, losing in

:39:33. > :40:04.the second round to Coco Vandeweghe. Second appearance here for Latvia's

:40:05. > :40:06.Jelena Ostapenko. She had a tricky match against Soares Navarro. But

:40:07. > :40:45.was also a couple of days ago. And it is the Centre Court's first

:40:46. > :40:49.to look at this incredible ball striking from this young player.

:40:50. > :40:51.It's what Jo has got to deal with out here, how does she stop this

:40:52. > :41:08.flow of winners? It's the first time these two have

:41:09. > :41:09.met, so a little bit of settling down in the opening few minutes for

:41:10. > :41:49.both players. And an ideal start for the French

:41:50. > :41:53.Open Championship just to put Ostapenko into contact, if you

:41:54. > :41:57.haven't seen her play - three years ago, she was the junior Wimbledon

:41:58. > :42:00.champion. She furnished that year in the senior rankings at 300 in the

:42:01. > :42:06.world. 12 months later, she was in the world's top 80. A year later,

:42:07. > :42:12.she was in the top 50, and now, she's on the verge of the top ten.

:42:13. > :42:18.It has been a very quick rise for her, only just turned 20, on semi

:42:19. > :42:21.finals day at Roland Garros, and she took it all in her stride. Now,

:42:22. > :43:01.superstar back home. This time last year, she was only

:43:02. > :43:05.just graduating from the International House school in Riga,

:43:06. > :43:12.where she specialised in languages, including English. If you are only

:43:13. > :43:14.just getting your first look at what a precocious young woman and player

:43:15. > :44:05.she is developing into. The American commentator Mary would

:44:06. > :44:08.call this big baby tennis, there's going to be some heavy striking from

:44:09. > :44:20.the baseline from both these two. This is going to be a matchup to

:44:21. > :44:44.save over the next couple of hours. A cold and breezy day in Eastbourne.

:44:45. > :44:52.Fearless tennis and a start with some confidence from Jelena

:44:53. > :44:56.Ostapenko. I think we already realise after six minutes, Jo Konta

:44:57. > :45:00.has got quite match on her hands. Leon, well done, you made it over,

:45:01. > :45:05.up to the top of the stand! You covered the ground well! It was not

:45:06. > :45:28.what you call a sprint for me, but I got here!

:45:29. > :45:36.UMPIRE: Miss Ostapenko is challenging the call. It is a close

:45:37. > :45:42.one, she's hacker to challenge it. She has got it right. Shy in coming

:45:43. > :46:06.forward, and she's very pleased with herself.

:46:07. > :46:15.Leon, the court is playing pretty low, its soft, but with this young

:46:16. > :46:20.woman, it seems she could play on glass. What are the problems here

:46:21. > :46:25.facing Jo Konta one I think that is a good example of what she's going

:46:26. > :46:40.to have to do, use her hand skills, and other skills, just to cope with

:46:41. > :46:45.the power. How big is this ball from Ostapenko? Well, we all watched with

:46:46. > :46:56.astonishment what happened in Paris, the sheer pace that she has got, but

:46:57. > :47:04.the fearlessness as well, that's what makes it dangerous. You can see

:47:05. > :47:28.already, she's standing inside the baseline to receive.

:47:29. > :47:37.I guess a bit of the danger is when the ball is coming so fast that

:47:38. > :47:43.Konta, she feels the need to go back fast again, but she's probably just

:47:44. > :47:59.going to have to try and lengthen the rallies kinder she can.

:48:00. > :48:08.The coaching team of Jo. Andrew Fitzpatrick on the right, hitting

:48:09. > :48:19.partner. They've settle down this year very well.

:48:20. > :48:31.That is a gritty hold from the British none one -- number one, down

:48:32. > :48:36.an early break in this opening set. Leon, you've obviously been around

:48:37. > :48:41.Andy Murray for a very long time, and you seen him grow and fame and

:48:42. > :48:48.everything that goes with it - where are the pitfalls? Jo now comes into

:48:49. > :48:53.this event is the fifth seed, one of the contenders, and she got a lot

:48:54. > :48:57.more going on for her. What can she learn from what Andy has been going

:48:58. > :49:02.through, because next week is going to be something which even this man

:49:03. > :49:06.cannot prepare her for, and he's been working with Grand Slam

:49:07. > :49:10.champions? Yeah, and for Jo at Wimbledon, her home event, it goes

:49:11. > :49:18.to another level. Andy, in his early days, had to learn on the job well,

:49:19. > :49:23.that is part of it. But the team around her is going to be really

:49:24. > :49:28.important. And Jo has done such a great job of becoming much, much

:49:29. > :49:34.more composed, not just on the court but off the court, and that's going

:49:35. > :49:39.to help her as she heads into all of these expert nations over the next

:49:40. > :49:44.fortnight! It doesn't sound a nice place, does it?! But it comes with

:49:45. > :49:50.it, and she's earned that the petitioners well, and she'll learn

:49:51. > :49:55.from it as the years go by. And another player in the expectation

:49:56. > :49:57.zone is Ostapenko, at the far end, seemingly dealing with it very well

:49:58. > :50:38.here. She made a call, but you already

:50:39. > :50:41.missed the shot. And then she corrected. That's why I just want to

:50:42. > :50:51.know if you want to challenge or not. Miss Konta, challenging the

:50:52. > :50:58.call. So, the serve was called out, and then it was said that Jo hit the

:50:59. > :51:02.ball after the call, missed it, and then really, her only play was to

:51:03. > :51:06.challenge it. And it was a correct call. That was a bit of adult

:51:07. > :51:13.dinner! It certainly was, we got there!

:51:14. > :51:31.There's an example of what Jo can do, she can certainly step inside

:51:32. > :51:33.the court and look to be very offensive on the return of that

:51:34. > :51:59.second serve. That's pretty impressive, to be able

:52:00. > :52:09.to generate that sort of power off a lower ball.

:52:10. > :52:16.She is a very self-confident young woman, spent her formative years as

:52:17. > :52:21.a competitive ballroom dancer. Had to make the choice at 12. Not too

:52:22. > :52:31.many of those in the sport! Think she made the right choice! And

:52:32. > :52:38.that's a very good hold. We have had ex-swimmers and ex-footballers and

:52:39. > :52:43.basketballers, Simona Halep was a gymnast for a few years. Apparently

:52:44. > :52:47.she kept having to go away to tennis camp and missing out on ballroom

:52:48. > :52:53.answering, and she could not get a decent partner when she came back.

:52:54. > :53:08.That type of serving will certainly help Jo. She has got a great serve,

:53:09. > :53:15.and good variety with it as well. It's important to get as many first

:53:16. > :53:19.serves in as possible, so she's not facing those aggressive returns off

:53:20. > :53:45.the second serves. Do you think that's an area she can

:53:46. > :54:06.target, into that forehand wing of Ostapenko?

:54:07. > :54:16.She's got one of these late contact points, ala Steffi Graf. And if she

:54:17. > :54:23.is rushed, the racket tips open, and the ball can fly. But you go there

:54:24. > :54:34.at your peril. Her racket work, it's something else. What I can't get

:54:35. > :54:39.over, Leon, she on a grass court, she loves playing on this surface,

:54:40. > :54:44.but her take-backs are so high, and the ball is so low. She drops it

:54:45. > :54:50.down so quickly. I think we are looking at something really special.

:54:51. > :55:06.Yes! Really solid game from Konta. Just keeps it to the one break.

:55:07. > :55:14.Leon, I think we were all quite surprised that Jo switched coaches

:55:15. > :55:25.at the end of last year. I have to say, the women's game's loss is Jade

:55:26. > :55:30.Clarke's gain. Esteban Toledo has a phenomenal reputation. Can you see

:55:31. > :55:33.what he has brought to her game this year, or is it just going to be very

:55:34. > :55:55.small changes? One thing which springs to mind is,

:55:56. > :55:59.it is either someone who has been there and done it as a player or

:56:00. > :56:05.someone who has a very strong record of working with Grand Slam winners.

:56:06. > :56:08.I know Esteban really well now, and I am super impressed with him as a

:56:09. > :56:14.person, and as a coach, he is absolutely terrific, so it's no

:56:15. > :56:20.surprise to see Jade Clarke and his family really enjoying this working

:56:21. > :56:24.relationship. But with Wim Fissette, he has been there with Kim clusters

:56:25. > :56:28.and other players. That's got to help, it gives you something else to

:56:29. > :56:32.fall back on someone, knowing you're going to go deep into these

:56:33. > :57:12.tournaments, to have those sorts of conversations.

:57:13. > :57:21.Tell me about this serve. I'm amazed it held up in a French Open final!

:57:22. > :57:24.So am I. That second serve, that could be an Achilles' heel,

:57:25. > :57:25.especially has her reputation grows and people get to know her game

:57:26. > :58:00.world. -- her game well. We have seen Andy Murray having to

:58:01. > :58:26.work hard on his second serve to increase the speed.

:58:27. > :58:34.Konta was broken rather easily in the opening game - a couple of

:58:35. > :58:54.chances to get back on level terms now.

:58:55. > :59:14.Jo Konta, feeling her way into this first meeting with the French Open

:59:15. > :59:20.champion. It's the right mindset to have there from Konta. She's going

:59:21. > :59:21.to win a lot of points by being very aggressive on that second serve

:59:22. > :59:37.return. Signs that things are just starting

:59:38. > :00:57.to turn, momentum with Konta. APPLAUSE

:00:58. > :01:00.3-1 down just a few minutes ago, Johanna Konta, but no signs of

:01:01. > :01:05.panic. She played so well in her opening match a couple of days ago.

:01:06. > :01:25.Not too much tennis played yesterday.

:01:26. > :01:38.That's an emphatic service game for Johanna Konta. Ahead now for the

:01:39. > :01:43.first time in this opening set. Leon, just broadening out our

:01:44. > :01:48.discussions about women's tennis, what are you seeing in the women's

:01:49. > :01:55.game at the moment? We are going to hold fire here for one second...

:01:56. > :02:03.After 3-2, you begin to open the court. Remember your speed in the

:02:04. > :02:08.middle, then you open the court. On the second serve, don't give her a

:02:09. > :02:12.lot of angles, because she is going for it all the time. Move into the

:02:13. > :02:23.court and then you start to move her. At the beginning, fast middle,

:02:24. > :02:30.and then you open the court. With the serve, stop to think what you

:02:31. > :02:35.need to do. You arrive there, bounce and serve, without thinking. Put the

:02:36. > :02:43.ball high above your head and use your arm. It's OK. But attention on

:02:44. > :02:57.your legs. Stay low with the legs, pushing against the floor. Work with

:02:58. > :03:04.the legs, active. She is a very good player, retired a few years ago, and

:03:05. > :03:08.she knows her apples. That is a great piece of coaching. If I am a

:03:09. > :03:12.player listening to that, I am starting to feel good about myself.

:03:13. > :03:16.Important to have a clear plan. A couple of breaks so far. New balls,

:03:17. > :03:44.Ostapenko at 3-4. I like what she was saying about

:03:45. > :03:47.simple strategies. You can play fast through the middle on the first

:03:48. > :04:06.ball, get her on the back foot, and then look to open the door.

:04:07. > :04:17.UMPIRE: Miss Konta is challenging the call. You are allowed three

:04:18. > :04:22.incorrect challenges per set. You get an extra one if it goes into a

:04:23. > :04:28.tie-break. UMPIRE: The call stands. 30-0. Lots of things going on these

:04:29. > :04:33.days in tennis, on court coaching just for the women's tour. If you

:04:34. > :04:35.haven't watched too much tennis since Wimbledon last year, it is

:04:36. > :05:01.good to have a little refresh. APPLAUSE

:05:02. > :05:06.Well, Ostapenko has listened to her coach, who said, don't worry too

:05:07. > :05:09.much about the angles on your second serve return, you can play it into

:05:10. > :05:13.the body to take away the angles, and even by getting a little early

:05:14. > :05:23.success with that change of tactics it will help, build that confidence.

:05:24. > :05:24.I don't know quite what that was that was being moved off the court,

:05:25. > :05:43.but it is gone. So, Ostapenko now very much back on

:05:44. > :06:43.track. We have heard about the tactics that

:06:44. > :06:48.Ostapenko will use, but what about Jo? How will she utilise what she

:06:49. > :07:14.has got at the other end? Again, we are seeing this very calm,

:07:15. > :07:17.composed young woman here, routine almost in the extreme. No sign of

:07:18. > :07:37.panic yet from the fifth seed. APPLAUSE

:07:38. > :07:49.I do like that serve, the swinging serve. You can go into the Ostapenko

:07:50. > :08:14.forehand with quality, even though it is a strength.

:08:15. > :08:23.Ostapenko is clearly using the tactics given. It must be great to

:08:24. > :08:46.have player who rides to orders. No, Ostapenko on the march again. --

:08:47. > :08:49.oh, Ostapenko on the march again. That one travelled as straight as an

:08:50. > :08:52.arrow through the court. She has the ability to flatten the ball. She

:08:53. > :09:11.just leans right through the shot. UMPIRE: Miss Ostapenko challenges

:09:12. > :09:20.the call. A second challenge from Ostapenko, who already has got one

:09:21. > :09:49.right. UMPIRE: The call stands. Not such a good challenge.

:09:50. > :10:05.'S they will constructive point, that. We talked about getting good

:10:06. > :10:08.depth, and she certainly got it there. It is important once you find

:10:09. > :10:10.that depth and you get the easier ball, that you move into it quickly.

:10:11. > :10:27.She did that superbly well there. That is a really tough hold from a

:10:28. > :10:32.break point down will stop Johanna Konta, ahead once more in this

:10:33. > :10:36.opening session, leading 5-4. Before we were rudely interrupted at the

:10:37. > :10:40.last changeover, I was going to ask you about the wider sense of women's

:10:41. > :10:46.tennis, and why you feel that maybe the top players are not performing

:10:47. > :10:54.week in, week out. Do you have any idea what might be happening? It is

:10:55. > :10:59.a really tough question. I didn't bring you all the way over from the

:11:00. > :11:07.studio to throw you soft walls! I think, the emergence of other

:11:08. > :11:11.players. Obviously, with Serena and then obviously Sharapova, years ago,

:11:12. > :11:15.Azarenka, the ones that started to have a lot of power in the game, the

:11:16. > :11:19.one not as many power players around, and it makes it more

:11:20. > :11:22.difficult to establish yourself as consistently as they were able to.

:11:23. > :11:31.But it has thrown everything open. Not one player has that dominant

:11:32. > :11:35.game. We saw Kerber have such a terrific 2016, but then people

:11:36. > :11:45.started to figure out a way of, OK, I know shout -- how she plays and I

:11:46. > :11:53.can combat that. There was no one really emerging as that one player.

:11:54. > :11:58.Maybe it is Ostapenko. Although she is diminutive in size, she has

:11:59. > :12:04.unbelievable weapons, and that will be interesting to see if she starts

:12:05. > :12:15.to pull back together. -- poll that together.

:12:16. > :12:20.We talked about that late preparation, like contact time that

:12:21. > :12:27.she has. It allows her to change direction at the last second. She

:12:28. > :12:28.catches the opponent off balance. I'm sure Konta thought that last

:12:29. > :13:49.ball would go back across the court. It was certainly the right option

:13:50. > :13:53.there, the ball was hanging in the air, so why not? Take it out there

:13:54. > :14:12.with a swing volley. Well, this is turning into some

:14:13. > :14:18.first set. Ostapenko levels up with ease. This is the first event she

:14:19. > :14:22.has played since winning the French Open, and she seems completely

:14:23. > :14:29.unfazed by all the success. She is a superstar back home, and here she

:14:30. > :14:33.is, composed, reset, 20 years old. Unbelievable. It is. It's a great

:14:34. > :14:50.quality to have, especially with the way she plays, that fearless tennis.

:14:51. > :14:57.And probably smart scheduling from her team, not to delve into the

:14:58. > :14:58.tournaments beforehand. It allows you to settle and come back on your

:14:59. > :15:17.own terms. We are seeing a lot of those plays,

:15:18. > :15:19.aren't we? The swinging serve and then going big into the forehand. It

:15:20. > :15:52.is a good tactic. Amazing how low back ball stayed. We

:15:53. > :15:59.mentioned earlier the load balances. Barely a couple of inches there. She

:16:00. > :17:10.does -- it does traditionally play a little quicker than Wimbledon.

:17:11. > :17:16.She hasn't made too many wrong shot selections, but that one was a tough

:17:17. > :17:23.one to pull off, defending that ball, going for a drop shot. The

:17:24. > :17:30.wind is westerly, and it is funnelling around the Centre Court,

:17:31. > :17:40.making things very tricky. This opening set is an arm wrestle. Konta

:17:41. > :17:50.pushes ahead once more, 6-5 she leads, first set. Jo still trains

:17:51. > :17:55.quite a lot at the NTC when she's in London. Her parents still live down

:17:56. > :18:01.here, and I think that Eastbourne is home as well. You must have been

:18:02. > :18:06.around a few years ago when she was in that 150-160 mark. What was she

:18:07. > :18:14.like then in terms of training, personality? There was about a year

:18:15. > :18:22.where I was head of men's and women's tennis. Lucky you! It was a

:18:23. > :18:26.privilege. It was clear then that she was always looking for answers,

:18:27. > :18:30.looking to learn and develop, very serious about tennis, and this was

:18:31. > :18:37.her thing. It was her profession. Can I just ask, she plateaued for

:18:38. > :18:41.about three years after being a good junior. Did you ever see her be down

:18:42. > :18:48.and demoralised because she wanted it so much? You saw it come out in

:18:49. > :18:53.frustration, especially the tension. Wanting it so badly. And often, that

:18:54. > :18:57.type of character, when you are pouring yourself in, day in, day

:18:58. > :19:02.out, and you don't get the fruits of that on the court, the frustration

:19:03. > :19:06.and tension gets to be even more, and of course, everyone knows that

:19:07. > :19:10.in the last couple of years, she has managed to get that composure. One

:19:11. > :19:17.thing I know for sure is that she has not left any stone unturned. She

:19:18. > :19:18.is always looking to improve. Ostapenko, for a second time,

:19:19. > :20:56.serving to stay in this opening set. Oh, she is just nailing these second

:20:57. > :21:01.serves. And how well Jo Konta has turned this opening set around, down

:21:02. > :21:12.a break, 3-1 down, triple set point for the British number one.

:21:13. > :21:22.That is Ostapenko all over. Would you describe that as fearless? Why

:21:23. > :21:24.not? It will take something special to save this service game, and that

:21:25. > :21:50.is a pretty good start. A little wry smile from Konta. The

:21:51. > :21:58.top players know all about this. Word has got round the locker room

:21:59. > :22:06.about how fearless Ostapenko is, mac ten, no matter what the score. And

:22:07. > :22:12.that is a very popular outcome to the end of this opening set, and it

:22:13. > :22:21.is Britain's number one, Jo Konta, who takes it 7-5. STUDIO: That is a

:22:22. > :22:25.proper match on Centre Court. There have been some really good games

:22:26. > :22:33.being played on the outside courts as well. Simona Halep not very happy

:22:34. > :22:37.at being banished to Court number four. She has beaten Pironkova of

:22:38. > :22:43.Bulgaria in three sets to go through to the next round with Caroline

:22:44. > :22:53.Wozniacki, who won very easily against Elena Vesnina. This is

:22:54. > :22:56.Svetlana Kuznetsova just a couple of moments ago, winning her third set.

:22:57. > :23:05.It was a fantastic match against Kristina Mladenovic. I mentioned

:23:06. > :23:10.Simona Halep winning on Court number four, and she has been replaced

:23:11. > :23:21.there by Britain's Heather Watson. There she is. She will be playing

:23:22. > :23:26.Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, the world number 14, from Russia, that match

:23:27. > :23:32.about to get underway. Here we are, back on Centre Court. Let's tell you

:23:33. > :23:37.about J Clark. We were talking to Leon Smith about him. It is not

:23:38. > :23:43.funny, because there is a certain irony to it, because everyone on the

:23:44. > :23:49.courtside at Roehampton was under the impression it was the best-of-3

:23:50. > :23:53.sets, so when he won a second set, there was rapturous applause because

:23:54. > :24:00.everyone thought he had won, but it is the best of five Imran three. He

:24:01. > :24:04.is still two sets to the good. The Austrian is 2-1 in the second set,

:24:05. > :24:11.on serve. Right, back to this match with Jo Konta one to the good.

:24:12. > :24:15.Anyone watching this match, Leon, who is playing at Wimbledon next

:24:16. > :24:21.week will not fancy playing Jo Konta on grass when she is playing like

:24:22. > :24:24.this. Absolutely not, a terrific first set from Konta, especially

:24:25. > :24:28.when you think about the start of the set, when she went a break down.

:24:29. > :24:32.She then started to stamp authority on the match, and that is how much

:24:33. > :24:36.she has grown as a player, that she is able to carry that early

:24:37. > :24:53.disappointment and turn it round in her favour. Doing great.

:24:54. > :25:00.With the news that Konta has won the first, I think the sun has briefly

:25:01. > :25:06.come out, the wind is up, which will dry the court and make it play a

:25:07. > :25:07.little more truly. I'm not sure the players will enjoy the wind. You

:25:08. > :25:22.can't have it all. She has had a lot of success with

:25:23. > :25:25.that swinging serve, but that time, you would think Ostapenko would

:25:26. > :25:38.start covering that serve and move a little earlier.

:25:39. > :25:45.That was a tough shot to take on, because looking at the flags from

:25:46. > :25:49.the southern end, where Jo is, the wind is blowing from left to right,

:25:50. > :25:52.so you would need to aim towards the middle of the court to get it

:25:53. > :25:55.anywhere near the tramline, and that is the adjustment. This is a hard

:25:56. > :26:15.court to play on. Ostapenko... Disgusted with herself

:26:16. > :26:18.not making that passing shot. This is why it is sometimes worth

:26:19. > :27:17.venturing to the net. There is another example of the

:27:18. > :28:16.relentless but easy power she is able to create on the ball.

:28:17. > :28:22.It's not surprising that the double fault will come in on key points

:28:23. > :28:25.because of the way that Ostapenko is really being aggressive on the

:28:26. > :28:27.second serve return. It is normal for a player to put a little bit

:28:28. > :29:13.extra on it. Nicely done. What is the best

:29:14. > :29:20.serving pattern for Konta in this matchup? As we have been alluding

:29:21. > :29:25.to, she has been using the swinging serve, trying to rush the forehand,

:29:26. > :29:31.then opening into the backhand side, which is an obvious pattern. She's

:29:32. > :29:32.changing it up a bit more, maybe because she senses that Ostapenko is

:29:33. > :30:01.reading it. Very interesting that in the French

:30:02. > :30:03.Open semifinal, against Timea Bacsinszky, Timea Bacsinszky came

:30:04. > :30:08.off and said she could not believe how many winners Ostapenko hit. She

:30:09. > :30:13.was taking a one in ten chance of making it and making it all the

:30:14. > :30:19.time. She just couldn't believe it. It was outrageous.

:30:20. > :30:29.Just drifted long. I think a lot of the top players who play Ostapenko

:30:30. > :30:32.for the first time have got to contain that outrage, that, I can't

:30:33. > :30:38.believe she has made that, because that can get you in a negative

:30:39. > :30:44.spiral. You have to accept people who play like John Isner, on the

:30:45. > :30:50.men's site. You have to accept and take your chance.

:30:51. > :30:59.This is gritty from Konta, she's trying to keep the Genie in the

:31:00. > :31:02.bottle out here. She's doing a good job, finding those Serbs again,

:31:03. > :31:09.going big into the backhand this time. Not quite sure why Ostapenko

:31:10. > :31:19.decided to challenge that one, that was pretty obvious, even from where

:31:20. > :31:27.we are. Third deuce in this game. And it's another break point for

:31:28. > :31:31.this young Latvian. It's interesting. Sam, you were asking

:31:32. > :31:35.about the pattern of serving, just little signs that Jo Konta is not

:31:36. > :31:40.white sure where to go just now. The danger of going into the backhand is

:31:41. > :31:49.that I think the Senna counters on that side very well. -- I think

:31:50. > :32:04.Ostapenko counters on that side very well.

:32:05. > :32:12.Not sure whether Jo's mum and dad are here. They live down on the

:32:13. > :32:26.marina, I know that mum gets very, very nervous, tends to watch from

:32:27. > :33:11.behind the server! -- from behind the sofa.

:33:12. > :33:17.Just look at the numbers, Leon? Thanks for giving me just a split

:33:18. > :33:20.second to compute them! The important thing from Jo Konta, when

:33:21. > :33:24.you're playing somebody as aggressive as Ostapenko, really high

:33:25. > :33:30.percentage of first serves in is going to be crucial. That's the

:33:31. > :33:35.third line down. At 63%, that's good, especially because we know

:33:36. > :33:41.Konta is going after her serve. But she's being smart, she's using the

:33:42. > :33:44.swinger, and every now and then, she will go for the big flat once.

:33:45. > :34:04.There's some good signs of how she's serving.

:34:05. > :34:08.I was about to say, that was the perfect return, but that was an

:34:09. > :34:30.amazing reply from Ostapenko. Difficult shot there to try and

:34:31. > :34:37.make, a drive volley when the ball is that low.

:34:38. > :34:48.Yeah, that was inside the line. We need characters, and we've got one

:34:49. > :34:55.in spades here, haven't we? We certainly have. She is a cracker!

:34:56. > :34:57.She's not taking herself too seriously. She is a lovely young

:34:58. > :35:28.woman, I tell you. Gee whizz! . I mean, that is

:35:29. > :35:35.precision tennis at its best, just near the sideline. That is a

:35:36. > :35:46.difficult shot, but she's able to direct it with great accuracy. There

:35:47. > :35:52.is a wow factor to Ostapenko, we've seen it in games is throughout her

:35:53. > :35:55.junior career, and first few years in the prose. She plays with passion

:35:56. > :36:09.and love of the game. See certainly does. And she's got the weapons to

:36:10. > :36:18.go with it. I can do it, too, says Jo!

:36:19. > :36:42.Not about three points in a row there from Ostapenko. Vicky Brooke

:36:43. > :36:47.come her agent, who has had a busy assignment than she might have

:36:48. > :36:57.realised when she took over 18 months ago! Yes. Also agent to Jay

:36:58. > :37:01.Clarke as well. That phone will have been ringing nonstop, I would of

:37:02. > :37:09.thought, with the rise and rise of Jo Konta. Vicky and Jo played a lot

:37:10. > :37:17.of junior tennis together, and Jo requested the as her manager. Konta

:37:18. > :37:25.has got a chance to make a significant move here. She has

:37:26. > :37:27.created this pressure, she has done a great job in this game of getting

:37:28. > :38:20.balls back. I think Jo might have been called in

:38:21. > :38:22.two minds there. There was a lot of space on the other side, but she

:38:23. > :38:37.decided to go back across. Both women having to save break

:38:38. > :39:33.points, and Ostapenko comes through with aplomb.

:39:34. > :39:42.It's such a good serve, that one that Jo has, creating such a short

:39:43. > :40:54.angle. How does she do it?! It's like a

:40:55. > :41:00.luminous green! It's just unbelievable that you're able to

:41:01. > :41:02.send the ball but hard and that accurately back. Amazing rhythm and

:41:03. > :41:20.timing to be able to do that. It just feels out here that there is

:41:21. > :41:30.a little fire burning up the other end, and Jo is trying to put water

:41:31. > :41:36.on it, foam, blankets, to try and keep it from becoming some sort of

:41:37. > :41:52.huge situation. And she's doing a very, very good job so far.

:41:53. > :42:00.I don't know how you legislate for this kind of tennis from this

:42:01. > :42:06.extraordinarily self-confident 20-year-old, who says, I back

:42:07. > :42:23.myself. She's got a break point here.

:42:24. > :42:30.What a wonderful smoked, and how often we've seen that today, when

:42:31. > :42:31.she has needed to come up with a big first serve, she's managed to find

:42:32. > :43:11.it. Serving her way out of trouble. Jo

:43:12. > :43:12.Konta keeps control of this third round match, 2-1 she leads, second

:43:13. > :43:34.set. Anabel Medina Garrigues is back on.

:43:35. > :43:40.She has to go back, her speed is going down, so try to play a more

:43:41. > :43:46.deep at the beginning, the first one or two shots, to make her to go

:43:47. > :43:51.back, and then, you're going to have the opportunity to move her. Move

:43:52. > :43:58.more on the forehand side, she has more problems with the forehand

:43:59. > :44:07.side. And with the serve, she's serving 80% to your forehand. Why?

:44:08. > :44:19.And on the more important point. But it's good, you are playing good. How

:44:20. > :44:25.do you feel? Tell me. She's taking my mistakes, two errors in the whole

:44:26. > :44:29.match. It's OK, if you push your level a little bit higher, it's

:44:30. > :44:39.going to be better. And the score is very close. So, keep working, and

:44:40. > :44:44.keep playing aggressive, but deeper. If you could combine the attributes

:44:45. > :44:49.that Anabel showed on the tour, of toughness and hard work and

:44:50. > :44:56.relentless effort, with the talent of yelling, you've got a superstar.

:44:57. > :45:11.Yeah. I like her coaching, I think it's some of the best I've heard.

:45:12. > :45:18.I'm not saying I'm a fan of the coaching taking place, incidentally!

:45:19. > :45:23.But I think the coaching is really good! Next change of ends, we are on

:45:24. > :45:51.it! Very interesting, they have had on

:45:52. > :45:55.court coaching on the women's tour for close to eight years, and

:45:56. > :46:04.they've got some data from the last three. What the data is saying is

:46:05. > :46:09.that after on court coaching, the player does not always win the next

:46:10. > :46:21.game, but there is always, pretty much a bump up of performance.

:46:22. > :46:32.That's some response, a second love hold for Ostapenko in this match.

:46:33. > :46:37.You are allowed to have your coach on once in a set in the women's

:46:38. > :46:40.tour. She will not be allowed to bring Anabel on at Wimbledon, not in

:46:41. > :46:46.the slams. But if your opponent takes a medical time-out or there is

:46:47. > :46:50.a bathroom break, you can bring your coach on for an extra session.

:46:51. > :46:55.That's pretty much how it works all year round on the women's tour. Some

:46:56. > :47:29.players use it, some don't. It looks like Jo isn't going to use it.

:47:30. > :47:35.There's a slightly different serve, we haven't seen too much of that.

:47:36. > :47:40.Once or twice, Jo has served it into the forehand body of Ostapenko,

:47:41. > :47:54.which is a good idea when somebody has a fairly high swing.

:47:55. > :48:14.What unbelievable athleticism from both players. Yeah, this match has

:48:15. > :48:52.only just got going! SAM SMITH: Not afraid to show how

:48:53. > :48:53.she feels, Jelena Ostapenko. Anabel has been clamping down on a few of

:48:54. > :49:18.the histrionics! LEON SMITH: Terrific point from

:49:19. > :49:21.Konta, just stamping her authority. I like it when she looks to take the

:49:22. > :49:37.forehand early. Makes the swing a little bit more compact.

:49:38. > :49:42.Ostapenko wants to have another look at it. Well, that's not a surprise -

:49:43. > :49:53.she likes to challenge. That's taken a big piece of the

:49:54. > :50:03.line, and so we are on serve here in this second set, Konta having won

:50:04. > :50:08.the first. Leon - on court coaching on the women's tour, thumbs up,

:50:09. > :50:20.thumbs down? I'm moreover thumbs down, I think. Maybe not enough

:50:21. > :50:24.consistency behind it. I think... I think it would make more sense if

:50:25. > :50:28.you do it at every event, including the slams. They don't do it there,

:50:29. > :50:36.so why would you do it the rest of the tour? I'm not sure there's a

:50:37. > :50:39.huge amount to gain from it. It does put some accountability on the

:50:40. > :50:43.couch, in that moment. We've seen Anabel Medina Garrigues, who has

:50:44. > :50:49.spoken terrifically well to her player, and is no doubt making a

:50:50. > :50:55.difference. But for other coaches, it depends on their style, whether

:50:56. > :50:59.they're going to get enough out of it, have they got the communication

:51:00. > :51:06.style to go on and deliver succinctly in that moment? But I

:51:07. > :51:10.just think the consistency thing for me, if you're going to do it, do it

:51:11. > :51:15.the whole time, if not, leave it alone. And also, the way that our

:51:16. > :51:21.sport is played is the ability to think your way out of trouble. I'm

:51:22. > :51:26.not saying one conversation per set will change everything, but I like

:51:27. > :51:33.that part of our sport, where you're constantly problem-solving. You're

:51:34. > :51:52.in company, on that one. What we must say is, the standard of

:51:53. > :51:54.tennis is excellent out here. The long-time coach of angelic calibre

:51:55. > :52:28.there. -- of Angelique Kerber there. I don't know how she does that

:52:29. > :52:32.sometimes. It is a great return from Konta, it's early, it's accurate,

:52:33. > :52:35.somehow with that forehand, she's able to wrap the racket around the

:52:36. > :52:42.outside of the ball and create that angle. A true counterattack in every

:52:43. > :53:21.sense of the word in those situations.

:53:22. > :53:32.And it's back-to-back love service game for Jelena Ostapenko. Her level

:53:33. > :53:35.is on the rise. I have to say, the opening service game of this set

:53:36. > :53:39.were a real battle for both of the players. The last few service games

:53:40. > :54:54.have gone by pretty quickly. Just absolutely terrific watching

:54:55. > :55:00.Ostapenko's backhand, when she's got time on the ball, with a slightly

:55:01. > :55:22.longer swing, she's really able to hit through the line of the ball.

:55:23. > :55:32.There's another one of those screeching winners. At the French

:55:33. > :55:35.Open, they clocked the speeds of her various groundstrokes, and I think

:55:36. > :55:42.we were all rather amused to hear that in Paris, Jelena Ostapenko hit

:55:43. > :55:43.her forehand harder than Andy Murray. Not sure what Andy made of

:55:44. > :56:12.that? No comment! That was a chance, it wasn't the

:56:13. > :56:16.best of second serves from Konta. Plenty of time for Ostapenko to line

:56:17. > :56:18.up that forehand, but it was one of the few that she did not get hold

:56:19. > :56:33.of. Eight aces now for Konta, it's not

:56:34. > :56:36.just a number of them, it's when she has been serving them, at the

:56:37. > :57:10.critical moments. Absolutely. What a shot that is! That ball was

:57:11. > :57:17.barely bouncing off the court, so therefore it is difficult to get it

:57:18. > :57:20.up and down in time. Such are her skills and the racket speed, she's

:57:21. > :57:42.able to get just enough topspin so that it tips before the baseline.

:57:43. > :58:00.Steffi Graf raced this court on many an occasion, and I have to say,

:58:01. > :58:13.these shots are Graf-like. Absolutely. I don't know what the

:58:14. > :58:15.Latvian is for Fraulein forehand, but she has got it. And Ostapenko

:58:16. > :58:34.gets the breakthrough. I'm not sure Konta did an awful lot

:58:35. > :58:39.wrong in that game. Looking at her serve percentages, she's at 67% in

:58:40. > :58:45.this second set. Impressively, Ostapenko is at 90% of first serves

:58:46. > :58:51.in, which is impressive. What has blown everyone away about Ostapenko

:58:52. > :58:54.is, she's just suddenly able to produce winner after winner at any

:58:55. > :59:00.given time in a match. And at the moment, Serena is not out there, nor

:59:01. > :59:05.is Maria, Azarenka has just come back there's not really anyone out

:59:06. > :59:10.there that knows what to do with this game. I'm sure a lot of the

:59:11. > :59:13.coaches will be on their devices, looking at the stats, and over the

:59:14. > :59:19.next few months, they're going to try and work out a game plan. I'm

:59:20. > :59:23.sure. And that's the beauty now of the analysis tools that are out

:59:24. > :59:30.there. The WTA creating a lot of the information. That's what Wim is on

:59:31. > :59:35.right now, the tablet which has been specifically designed for lunar

:59:36. > :59:38.coaches on the tour, and that is giving him up-to-date information,

:59:39. > :59:42.service direction, first-served speed, everything you could ask for,

:59:43. > :59:48.it's an amazing innovation. Especially if you're being called on

:59:49. > :59:57.for on court coaching. For example, 80% of your first -- of her first

:59:58. > :00:05.serves are going to your forehand, fact - start covering it. Talking to

:00:06. > :00:10.Colin, who's working with Heather Watson. He says the information is

:00:11. > :00:43.absolutely terrific. There is a sense out here that this

:00:44. > :00:49.crowd who have been enjoying watching this match have not been

:00:50. > :00:50.investing in it. They have understood that Jo is in a little

:00:51. > :01:05.trouble here. Yes, it just sometimes takes a bit

:01:06. > :01:11.of time for the crowd to get that energy and maybe drop some of their

:01:12. > :01:20.inhibitions and make some noise. It is OK to make noise cinema it helps,

:01:21. > :01:23.and players like it. -- it is OK to make noise - it helps, and players

:01:24. > :01:54.like it. Konta has done very little wrong

:01:55. > :02:00.here. But suddenly, there is a breakaway in the second set. The

:02:01. > :02:05.British number one finds herself serving to stay in it, which happens

:02:06. > :02:10.so quickly. It was quick. Even the game where she got broken at 3-3,

:02:11. > :02:16.she didn't do much wrong. Even at deuce, she had a second serve of 97

:02:17. > :02:21.mph, which is big, but Ostapenko was able to get onto her forehand and

:02:22. > :02:24.start dictating play, and it is her who has that extra bit of confidence

:02:25. > :02:43.right now in her ground strokes. Just one break in the second set,

:02:44. > :03:39.three in the opener, a very tight match.

:03:40. > :03:44.Water terrific response from the loose error in the previous point,

:03:45. > :03:49.and she constructed that point on the front foot, looking to come

:03:50. > :04:06.forward as well -- what a terrific response. She volleys well. UMPIRE:

:04:07. > :04:13.Less Konta challenges the call. She might want to have a look at that

:04:14. > :04:48.one. -- Miss Konta challenges the call. UMPIRE: The call stands.

:04:49. > :04:56.Well, that is certainly tennis of the highest quality, just when she

:04:57. > :05:13.needs it as well. Crucial, crucial point there.

:05:14. > :06:13.Well, it is the irrepressible force of the French Open champion, Jelena

:06:14. > :06:52.Ostapenko. She is now at set point. UMPIRE: Miss Konta is challenging

:06:53. > :07:16.the call. She still has two left. UMPIRE: The call stands.

:07:17. > :07:22.What a response from Jelena Ostapenko! And she levels the match.

:07:23. > :07:31.The Latvian takes this second set, 6-3. STUDIO: Some serious hitting

:07:32. > :07:37.there, and if you did not see her during the French Open, Ostapenko's

:07:38. > :07:43.forehand is several miles an hour faster and harder than Andy

:07:44. > :07:49.Murray's. That is the kind of ammunition that is heading Johanna

:07:50. > :07:52.Konta's way now. On Court number four, Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova

:07:53. > :07:57.against Heather Watson, and this is set point. Well done, Heather, one

:07:58. > :08:04.set to her. 6-4. That is happening at this moment. News from Wimbledon

:08:05. > :08:11.qualifying, where we were talking about J Clarke, the 18-year-old from

:08:12. > :08:18.Derby, who was 2-0 up in sets against his Austrian opponent. You

:08:19. > :08:22.can see it is now 2-1 and 2-2 in the fourth. Anybody's guess at the

:08:23. > :08:29.moment. This match on Centre Court, because of the schedule changes, the

:08:30. > :08:34.next match on Centre Court will be Caroline Wozniacki against Simona

:08:35. > :08:41.Halep, the sixth seed against the second seed, and that will be on

:08:42. > :08:46.after this match. Johanna Konta at the start of this contest was 5-2 on

:08:47. > :08:50.to win this. I wonder what the bookmakers see as the balance of

:08:51. > :09:01.power now? Let's go back to the Smith team. COMMENTATOR: Scotland

:09:02. > :09:09.and Essex in one commentary box - it probably shouldn't be allowed. What

:09:10. > :09:13.now for the decider? What Ostapenko does will dictate a lot of that.

:09:14. > :09:19.You're right, Jo did not do a lot wrong, but Ostapenko raised her

:09:20. > :09:24.medal. She made a lot of returns and started to make a lot of winners. I

:09:25. > :09:29.think she caught Konta off-guard. She was serving well, the stats were

:09:30. > :09:34.good, up at around 70% of first serves in in that second set, but

:09:35. > :09:41.they kept coming back, and it will be interesting to see if Ostapenko

:09:42. > :09:49.can keep her level now. At the same time, we need to see Jo just cut out

:09:50. > :09:51.a few of those errors. She has to apply pressure early in this third

:09:52. > :10:27.set. It is that type of play that can

:10:28. > :10:35.really help her. If she tries to go toe to toe, Ostapenko has a slight

:10:36. > :10:39.edge in the weapons. Jo Konta can throw those angles on. She can play

:10:40. > :10:41.with more top-spin on the forehand, play with more width. The variety

:10:42. > :11:16.could help her. Already an important moment here

:11:17. > :11:22.early on in this opening service game. Konta doing a good job just to

:11:23. > :12:30.establish a lead. Well, you can just see her getting a

:12:31. > :12:35.little hitchy at the back of the swing. It stops the racket

:12:36. > :12:50.accelerating at the back of the ball. -- up the back of the ball. Jo

:12:51. > :12:55.had a break point the opening game of the second set, couldn't take it,

:12:56. > :12:58.and it will be the ease little micro-moments for Jo that will

:12:59. > :13:02.decide the outcome of this match. What a shame she couldn't just keep

:13:03. > :13:07.extending that rally, keep the pressure on.

:13:08. > :13:22.UMPIRE: Miss Ostapenko challenges the call. Jo seems pretty confident

:13:23. > :13:34.on this call. UMPIRE: The call stands. That is one from five now.

:13:35. > :13:41.Well, what a second serve that is, especially at that moment. It tells

:13:42. > :13:45.you an awful lot about the character of Ostapenko, being able to come up

:13:46. > :13:49.with this type of second serve, when she has not got a great second

:13:50. > :13:58.serve, let's be honest, but she finds it when she needs it.

:13:59. > :14:07.Four games in a row now for Jelena Ostapenko. The momentum of this

:14:08. > :14:12.third-round match going with the young Latvian. And we have blue sky

:14:13. > :14:16.- it feels like days since we have seen one. I did not pack my

:14:17. > :14:20.sunglasses, thought it was a pointless exercise. Maybe I should

:14:21. > :14:25.have thought again. Some more perplexing and confusing numbers for

:14:26. > :14:33.you, Leon. OK, the second set summary, what springs out? The serve

:14:34. > :14:36.percentage springs out, yet again. Look at Ostapenko, 87% of first

:14:37. > :14:40.serves in, a big shift from what happened in the first set, and that

:14:41. > :14:43.is why the momentum is starting to come with her, she was able to hold

:14:44. > :15:06.those service games more comfortably.

:15:07. > :15:13.Jo was involved and has been involved in quite a few 3-set

:15:14. > :15:19.battles over the years. Garbine Muguruza in this round a couple of

:15:20. > :15:26.years ago. And Petra Kvitova last year. So, very happy to go the

:15:27. > :16:03.distance. Particularly in the third round. It may be an omen.

:16:04. > :16:09.I think that is the other thing that happened throughout the second set,

:16:10. > :16:13.Konta still serving well but look at that return, just deep, fast, giving

:16:14. > :16:33.Konta no time on the ball. She has not found a way to solve

:16:34. > :16:38.this particular problem. That's what tennis matches are always about,

:16:39. > :16:41.they are a Rubik's Cube for you to deal with. She got a lot more free

:16:42. > :16:46.points in the first set, Konta, from those type of service, now the ball

:16:47. > :16:52.is coming back and she's having to work that bit harder.

:16:53. > :17:12.She loves that play. She loves the backhand after the survey. She had

:17:13. > :17:46.lots of control that, creates good width and

:17:47. > :17:56.that felt like an important moment early in the third set to weather

:17:57. > :17:58.the storm, hold serve, despite the pressure Ostapenko is putting Konta

:17:59. > :18:31.under. It's a good response. That's a tough shot to change

:18:32. > :18:34.Limond, it came back with interest, really fast and low over the high

:18:35. > :18:40.part of the net. That was a tough one.

:18:41. > :18:47.Yes, she is looking but it's very early to go with the challenge.

:18:48. > :18:52.Looking straight at her coach, he's probably about ten metres to the

:18:53. > :19:10.right of her. You cannot write this. That is a

:19:11. > :20:26.supercharged forehand. She has been given the window of

:20:27. > :20:57.opportunity to get back into this. Just a nice reminder from Konta that

:20:58. > :21:04.she can also connect with some of these returns in that way.

:21:05. > :21:16.That was awkward. Not entirely intentional. Konta can build

:21:17. > :21:46.pressure here, another break on the Ostapenko serve.

:21:47. > :21:50.Konta raising her level, she gets the early break in the deciding set.

:21:51. > :22:38.She leads to- one. I said before, keep going, OK? Start

:22:39. > :22:43.to play more aggressive. Who hits first is who won the point. Keep

:22:44. > :22:55.thinking on that. Every shot, behind the ball, push against and

:22:56. > :22:58.aggressive, OK? You changed your mentality here, you were saying,

:22:59. > :23:11.come on, that makes the change. Think on that. Sjoholm you are going

:23:12. > :23:19.to fight until the last -- show her. Remember what she does on the serve,

:23:20. > :23:24.the directions. They started working together in April this year a few

:23:25. > :23:29.weeks before the French Open and the chemistry has been excellent. That

:23:30. > :23:36.was the last throw of the dice, early throw of the dice from Jelena

:23:37. > :23:49.and you can come on willy-nilly. This is the final and deciding set.

:23:50. > :23:56.There will certainly be an actress bring in the step of Konta at the

:23:57. > :24:00.moment. Looked like it was going to be an easy hold for Ostapenko in the

:24:01. > :25:03.last game but she let Konta into it and took a chance.

:25:04. > :25:10.This is what players face when up against Ostapenko. When you

:25:11. > :25:13.mentioned it earlier, Sam, all of a sudden she connects with the ball

:25:14. > :25:16.and there is nothing you can do, you are not serving badly, making the

:25:17. > :25:20.wrong decisions, she's just got it on her racket that is often is going

:25:21. > :25:49.to be on her terms at the outcome of point.

:25:50. > :25:56.That ball has been bouncing within inches of the baseline forced a very

:25:57. > :26:03.hard to get hold of. Jo was getting a grip on the final set and finds

:26:04. > :26:04.herself at break points down in this game for an immediate break back of

:26:05. > :26:36.serve. There goes up they grown around the

:26:37. > :26:44.tennis court. Ostapenko, who I don't think many will know much about.

:26:45. > :26:55.Just over an hour and three quarters long, high-level contest, and we are

:26:56. > :27:06.none the wiser as to the outcome. -- a groan. It is set fair for the rest

:27:07. > :27:12.of the afternoon into the evening. So, Ostapenko, new bourse. Who do

:27:13. > :27:17.the new bourse favour in this matchup? There is a big difference

:27:18. > :27:22.from the last old balls to the ones that come fresh out of the can. In

:27:23. > :27:29.this situation it gives her a bit of extra pop in her serve and it helps

:27:30. > :27:34.Ostapenko. Yes. You could see that ball flying along. It helps her get

:27:35. > :27:38.on the front foot early on, and helps her on the front foot as well

:27:39. > :27:43.if it comes to that. The men are so much more aware of the change of

:27:44. > :27:47.balls than the women. With the women it just goes by, they don't realise.

:27:48. > :27:53.There was no change in racket and string tension. The men decide

:27:54. > :27:59.exactly when they will change the racket. Everyone has their own

:28:00. > :28:02.routines on that, of course. But, of course, the new balls are a little

:28:03. > :28:07.greasy and they can fly on new. That's probably the main reason for

:28:08. > :28:09.the last double fault. She went to be aggressive with it but there was

:28:10. > :29:03.not enough spin on it. She has served seven in a match

:29:04. > :29:25.against Carla Suarez Navarro. It is something that her and Anabel work

:29:26. > :29:27.tirelessly on the practice court. They know it is an issue. A foot in

:29:28. > :29:28.the door again for Konta. That was a smart serve. Based on those double

:29:29. > :29:31.faults. She doesn't have a lot of spin on her second serve so there

:29:32. > :29:34.isn't much margin. That's something that could be worked on overtime.

:29:35. > :30:38.She went to Konta can't get the breakthrough

:30:39. > :30:43.despite those couple of double faults from the young Latvian.

:30:44. > :30:50.Ostapenko rather confidently walks to the chair 3-2 ahead on serve in

:30:51. > :30:55.this deciding set. You would say sitting here that you can sense the

:30:56. > :30:58.tension has gone up here. The quality just dipped a little with

:30:59. > :31:02.some errors and double faults from Ostapenko they gave Konta those

:31:03. > :31:09.opportunities. She wasn't able to get momentum into the game. You can

:31:10. > :31:13.tell we've gone through the stage of flawless tennis, both players

:31:14. > :31:17.playing well. Now we are into the third set the stakes are high and a

:31:18. > :31:21.few more errors are creeping in. When it gets to that stage it is who

:31:22. > :31:29.can step up and who can get momentum and rhythm and get some consistency

:31:30. > :31:38.in the play again. Conditions have certainly changed out here. When you

:31:39. > :31:41.came to the studio from the commentary box, a couple of hours

:31:42. > :31:49.ago, it was heavy and dark and damp. Now the court is drying and the sun

:31:50. > :31:55.is out. I think it might be time for an ice cream. I think the van might

:31:56. > :32:03.be doing some good business and after a quiet few days. This is a

:32:04. > :32:08.proper Eastbourne sunny afternoon. Cream tea just around the corner.

:32:09. > :32:14.You can tell I missed lunch! Are you OK, Sarah? Those other nasty clouds,

:32:15. > :32:15.they can go away, the ones over the South, they are OK.

:32:16. > :32:33.Konta is on serve, 2-3, third set. UMPIRE: Miss Konta is challenging

:32:34. > :32:42.the serve. She was getting ready to walk across

:32:43. > :32:48.the court. It has to be. That has to be Konta's point, the call came so

:32:49. > :32:53.late. The umpire is clear on that, she knows that Ostapenko is not as

:32:54. > :33:32.clear as the umpire or Konta, but she is now.

:33:33. > :33:45.That is very much an Ostapenko point, going the ground strokes. She

:33:46. > :34:16.is quick to come in for those drive volleys.

:34:17. > :34:19.Yet again it's the power off the racket of Ostapenko that is causing

:34:20. > :34:37.the issues. Just look at the intent of Ostapenko

:34:38. > :34:54.right now. Right on the line, that's another

:34:55. > :35:00.one of those superb returns. It might be the difference in this

:35:01. > :35:24.matchup. Ostapenko, more break points on the Konta serve.

:35:25. > :35:34.Terrific point from Konta. She needs to reassert herself right now. She

:35:35. > :35:55.has fended off six of ten break points in this match.

:35:56. > :36:13.I'm afraid it's long. That might just be the decisive break. At the

:36:14. > :36:25.first meeting of these two, the battle of the Js, Jelena against

:36:26. > :36:43.Johanna. Especially on return of serve she just keeps asking

:36:44. > :36:46.questions of Konta. Getting her first serve return back and on her

:36:47. > :37:05.second serve she is able to really impose herself. That's more like it.

:37:06. > :37:12.All of a sudden Johanna Konta decides to step it up, couple of

:37:13. > :37:37.fantastic returns. A couple of doubles in her last

:37:38. > :37:44.service game looked as if they might be expensive. They weren't. But that

:37:45. > :37:45.one might be the one that allows Konta to break back. She's got three

:37:46. > :38:00.chances to do so. UMPIRE: Miss Ostapenko is

:38:01. > :38:08.challenging the call. Considering her record out there she is one from

:38:09. > :38:14.five at the moment. We always try and glance at the umpire to see what

:38:15. > :38:22.sort of signals they are giving off. You don't need to tell me what just

:38:23. > :38:27.happened. Huge roar from the Eastbourne crowd and we are back on

:38:28. > :38:32.serve in this final set. Sometimes there is patterns in matches,

:38:33. > :38:40.sometimes there isn't. Only a few minutes before. There is some

:38:41. > :38:46.confusion about Garrigues coming on for coaching. She's already had her.

:38:47. > :38:57.You are allowed one per set. Konta has not been off for a bathroom

:38:58. > :39:02.break and she will not want to. She will not give any little window to

:39:03. > :39:06.get her on. And looking down at Johanna Konta's coach and I'm pretty

:39:07. > :39:10.sure he has not been miked up and there has been a decision, loss of

:39:11. > :39:14.the players do this, Johanna Konta is seven in the world a lot of the

:39:15. > :39:18.players a few weeks before the stands on the tour they don't have

:39:19. > :39:23.their coaches on. It makes complete sense, why would you do something

:39:24. > :39:30.you will not do at the biggest event? That is a no-brainer, good

:39:31. > :39:33.decision from Konta. One thing I'm going to pick up from the coaching

:39:34. > :39:39.team that we mentioned, I feel sorry for Andrew Fitzpatrick when labelled

:39:40. > :39:47.as a hitting partner. It doesn't sound in a. Former player himself,

:39:48. > :39:52.600 in the world. -- in a. Dani Vallverdu, travelling with Andrew, I

:39:53. > :39:59.thought that's not fair, they do weigh more than that. I am with you

:40:00. > :40:33.there. On serve after four breaks in this deciding set, 3-4, Konta.

:40:34. > :40:41.Unsurprised Ostapenko is often able to get that ball under control,

:40:42. > :40:46.below one, she is a flat hitter of the ball. She adjusts really well on

:40:47. > :41:01.those low ones to get just enough top-spin to bring the ball in.

:41:02. > :41:08.This is a big moment. This is when Konta will need to draw upon her

:41:09. > :41:44.experience. I would label that one bonus point.

:41:45. > :41:51.You've been given that one, so now go and win this one,gen-mac. Lucero

:41:52. > :42:02.on the forehand side of Ostapenko. We don't see many of those. -- Jo.

:42:03. > :42:34.-- loose error. There is a word everyone uses about

:42:35. > :42:37.Jo: relentless and meticulous, she has needed both of those qualities

:42:38. > :43:39.to stay in this match, despite having won the opening set.

:43:40. > :43:47.Another tough holes after being broken in her two previous service

:43:48. > :43:50.games. It is all to play for in this third-round match. Especially when

:43:51. > :43:58.she was faced at 0-30 in that last game, Konta, and put in a couple of

:43:59. > :44:09.first serves that she dumped into the net. That was a very important

:44:10. > :44:15.hold of serve. She got completely caught out by the speed of the

:44:16. > :44:58.second serve. 94 mph, far faster than she normally hits it.

:44:59. > :45:06.This matches into its third hour. Because of the rain delays this week

:45:07. > :45:12.and matches backed up, the winner of this match will have to again later

:45:13. > :45:23.this evening. Yes, write to the line. Jo Konta giving Ostapenko some

:45:24. > :45:30.of her own medicine. Absolutely. Two in a row. Phenomenal returns. She

:45:31. > :45:32.has enormous experience at the tournament. Semifinalists last year,

:45:33. > :45:42.quarterfinalist, the year before. This is looking good for the British

:45:43. > :46:29.number one. Can she take these chances right here?

:46:30. > :46:45.There it is again. Konta in front in this deciding set. 5-4, she leads.

:46:46. > :46:53.What a time to find your returns. Absolutely phenomenal response. Just

:46:54. > :46:56.when we thought Ostapenko really had a foothold in the match, Konta

:46:57. > :47:11.responds with a terrific run of games. She must have a backlog of

:47:12. > :47:16.confidence, playing brilliantly at Sydney at the beginning of the year,

:47:17. > :47:23.and demolished Radwanska in the final. The win in Miami. One of the

:47:24. > :47:34.biggest titles on the wooded's tour. She is every inch a top player. On

:47:35. > :47:37.the women's tour. Those returns off the first serves of Ostapenko, three

:47:38. > :47:43.of which have landed pretty much on the baseline in that game, to get

:47:44. > :47:49.that break. We see her sitting there, composed, ready to go, being

:47:50. > :47:58.clear in her game plan. The sideshow what a good place she is in. --

:47:59. > :48:03.these signs show. She came back to win the opening set. The second set

:48:04. > :48:07.went away a little. There have not been any anxious looks at the

:48:08. > :48:14.coaching team, she has not called them on for on court coaching. The

:48:15. > :48:19.camera zoomed in and he does have a microphone. She is taking full

:48:20. > :48:23.responsibility. That is the right move. Why would you when you are

:48:24. > :48:32.moving into a Grand Slam, way you will not get on court coaching? It

:48:33. > :48:34.has been a battle for the British number one. She is serving now for a

:48:35. > :49:34.place in the quarterfinals. That is an important point to win,

:49:35. > :50:20.the ground stroke exchanges. It is as if the Ostapenko returns

:50:21. > :50:25.have a magnetic attraction to the baseline. I think the wind has

:50:26. > :50:27.picked up. We can see with the flags and trees in the background. More

:50:28. > :50:58.blustery conditions. I liked when Jo uses the angle

:50:59. > :51:01.forehand. She does play with more top-spin when she wants to but it is

:51:02. > :51:09.more difficult on the grass to create that angle.

:51:10. > :51:49.She will be seeded 13 for Wimbledon. Number 14 in the world. The seeds

:51:50. > :52:02.bumping up because of the absence of Serena Williams.

:52:03. > :52:10.We saw that across the first set when she needed a service winner, a

:52:11. > :52:45.big serve, Konta was able to come up with it.

:52:46. > :52:53.Konta in her hometown. This has been a labour of love for the British

:52:54. > :53:06.number one and here she stands at match point.

:53:07. > :53:19.It is just a winner machine. It is but I think Konta was caught out in

:53:20. > :53:23.two minds. Do I go in, do I not? Not a great position. Take nothing away

:53:24. > :53:25.from the passing shot. I do not think she would have got there

:53:26. > :53:44.anyway, Konta. She has needed all her composure

:53:45. > :54:01.over the last two hours and a quarter, Johanna Konta.

:54:02. > :54:08.It is long. Just for the moment we thought it might drop. And now,

:54:09. > :54:16.these fans, they are living every point. They are feeling it and made

:54:17. > :54:23.no Konta needs that support. Ostapenko was pretty lucky. She

:54:24. > :54:25.thought, I will leave it, no, hang on, it might go in, and she ended up

:54:26. > :55:56.running for the ball. That was a solid second serve from

:55:57. > :56:00.Konta. You do get thrown about when you are up against Jelena Ostapenko.

:56:01. > :56:18.It is a different experience for these top players.

:56:19. > :56:44.There it is! It is battling brilliance from Britain's Jo Konta.

:56:45. > :56:55.No wonder she is getting a great round of applause. Now the noise

:56:56. > :56:58.comes through. What a gutsy performance from Johanna Konta. She

:56:59. > :57:05.had to dig deep. It looked like it was slipping away in the third set.

:57:06. > :57:10.Ostapenko will be back here many years, a popular figure, but it is

:57:11. > :57:15.all about Jo Konta. She deserves that victory, she fought hard, there

:57:16. > :57:20.was quality. Nerves and tension in the final set, but she kept

:57:21. > :57:24.composure. No matter what happens, a match like that before going into

:57:25. > :57:38.the Championships next week is gold dust. She has grabbed her bags. A

:57:39. > :57:44.third quarterfinal for Jo. She has just gone down to the interview

:57:45. > :57:47.position and any second now... We will hear from her.

:57:48. > :57:58.She is with Annabel Croft. Well played, a terrific contest

:57:59. > :58:04.today. Give us your thoughts on beating the French Open champion for

:58:05. > :58:10.the second time. I think the scoreline and match itself shows it

:58:11. > :58:14.was an incredibly tough battle. There was little in it and she was

:58:15. > :58:18.playing very well and against a player like her it is difficult to

:58:19. > :58:23.accept you do not have much say in some points, but I tried to fight

:58:24. > :58:29.for every point. I did the best to stay solid and also to try to take

:58:30. > :58:33.advantage of the chances I created. There was a lot of tension in the

:58:34. > :58:40.last game with match points and facing a break point. How did you

:58:41. > :58:46.hold your nerve? On pretty much both of the match points before, she

:58:47. > :58:51.played incredibly well and hit two winners and won those points like

:58:52. > :58:57.that. I had good access. I knew I was trying to play the right way and

:58:58. > :59:02.had trust in that sooner or later I would keep taking my chances. You

:59:03. > :59:06.have a busy afternoon because you have to get back out against the top

:59:07. > :59:12.seed and world number one Angelique Kerber. Give us your thoughts on how

:59:13. > :59:16.you match up against her. I have not had the opportunity to beat her yet

:59:17. > :59:21.and I will try again this afternoon. It will be a different match than it

:59:22. > :59:28.was this morning, early afternoon, so I will prepare the best I can and

:59:29. > :59:32.most importantly recover as quick as I can after this round and really

:59:33. > :59:36.enjoyed the fact I got another match today.

:59:37. > :59:42.We interrupted you eating a banana. I need to let you get back to that.

:59:43. > :59:47.Energy all right? I am all good. I am not the only one in this position

:59:48. > :59:52.today and everybody is playing, I am sure, mainly on adrenaline. Back to

:59:53. > :59:58.the banana. Get the energy on board. We look forward to the next one.

:59:59. > :00:02.STUDIO: Next update is Angelique Kerber, the world number one, and

:00:03. > :00:09.that match will be at some point this evening but there are issues

:00:10. > :00:13.about scheduling. Next we will see Caroline Wozniacki against Simona

:00:14. > :00:20.Halep and depending on how long that lasts, it might be Britain's Heather

:00:21. > :00:28.Watson going on to play next against Barbora Strycova because she has

:00:29. > :00:32.come through against Pavlyuchenkova stock she said how much she enjoys

:00:33. > :00:37.the grass court season and she is playing well at the moment. I was

:00:38. > :00:42.watching from afar and she was playing aggressive, positive tennis.

:00:43. > :00:49.Barbora Strycova, her opponent after beating Lauren Davis of the USA 75,

:00:50. > :00:55.6-2. Lauren Davis was blighted by injury time-outs and medical

:00:56. > :01:00.interventions, so it was not the hardest match for Barbora Strycova,

:01:01. > :01:08.who will have to play Heather Watson this evening. Mentioning the next

:01:09. > :01:15.opponent of Johanna Konta, this is confirmation of Angelique Kerber's

:01:16. > :01:20.victory, which was straightforward. The world number one is through to

:01:21. > :01:25.play Jo and this interview was done before Konta won.

:01:26. > :01:30.How are you feeling? You must be delighted it was not three sets like

:01:31. > :01:35.yesterday? I am happy about my game today. I was playing aggressive,

:01:36. > :01:42.trying to go for it if I had the chance. I am happy about my game

:01:43. > :01:47.today. You have two wins, how are you feeling going into the next? I

:01:48. > :01:54.am feeling OK and will get ready for the next today and trying to play

:01:55. > :01:58.like I played now. You had a left eye injury before the tournament and

:01:59. > :02:06.pulls out of Birmingham, but how are you feeling now? The body is good.

:02:07. > :02:11.Having two matches today, we will see tomorrow, but right now I am

:02:12. > :02:15.feeling good. It is good to be healthy again, because I had

:02:16. > :02:20.problems the last two weeks but I am good to go now for the next. Do you

:02:21. > :02:24.feel you have settled into the grass court season? I love to play on

:02:25. > :02:31.grass and I am happy to be here and playing again on one of my favourite

:02:32. > :02:38.surfaces and I am looking forward to the next ones. You have Johanna

:02:39. > :02:43.Konta or Ostapenko, a tough match. I am just happy to be in the next

:02:44. > :02:47.round and I will try to play good tennis again and try to have fun and

:02:48. > :02:51.trying of course to win the next match. All the best in the

:02:52. > :03:00.quarterfinals. Ladies and gentlemen, Angelique Kerber.

:03:01. > :03:03.STUDIO: We reached the point at 4pm on Thursday and organisers thought

:03:04. > :03:08.they would hope for a 10am on Thursday morning but we got there in

:03:09. > :03:12.the end. All of these matches will have to be played tonight which

:03:13. > :03:17.means everybody will have had to play twice. Lauren Davis of the USA,

:03:18. > :03:28.if she had beaten Barbora Strycova, would have had to play three games.

:03:29. > :03:39.This is some disappointing news for Jay Clarke. Two sets to the good

:03:40. > :03:43.against his opponent. He would not have been human if he had not allow

:03:44. > :03:48.thoughts of getting through to the first round of Wimbledon next week

:03:49. > :03:55.and never mind anything else, ?35,000, which pays bills at 18. But

:03:56. > :03:59.he faded away and lost in the end. Leon Smith is here. That is

:04:00. > :04:06.disappointing for him. It is tough but he should be proud. One year out

:04:07. > :04:13.of juniors and had not won a Challenger until last week and here

:04:14. > :04:16.he is in the last round of qualifying getting to play in the

:04:17. > :04:19.pressure moment and five set match, and it will help a lot. He's a great

:04:20. > :04:25.kid with a wonderful attitude and will go from strength to strength.

:04:26. > :04:29.The good thing is that he has a main draw wild card for the doubles and

:04:30. > :04:33.he will experience the Championships in that capacity. Never under

:04:34. > :04:39.estimate the difference between best-of-3 and best-of-5. You can do

:04:40. > :04:45.it in practice but it is not like doing it for real. Never mind the

:04:46. > :04:49.physical attributes, it is the emotional. Two sets up and he starts

:04:50. > :04:57.thinking, this is going to happen. He will learn from it but he has had

:04:58. > :05:01.a terrific two weeks. What a shame the Johanna Konta Ostapenko match

:05:02. > :05:08.was not best-of-5. It was very good quality. We looked forward to that

:05:09. > :05:10.match and it lived up to expectations, terrific

:05:11. > :05:14.entertainment, and Jo Konta shows how far she has come in handling

:05:15. > :05:24.those moments. Her serve is an attribute. For Jo Konta, it is, it

:05:25. > :05:29.saved a lot of moments in the first set and the final set. She managed

:05:30. > :05:34.to come up with it importantly when it mattered. That is the key, and

:05:35. > :05:42.she is able to swing it out wide, but has the flatter up the T, or the

:05:43. > :05:49.wider on the ad court. The second serve, although Ostapenko is sitting

:05:50. > :05:54.far inside the court, Johanna Konta is serving well and that serve will

:05:55. > :05:59.help over the next fortnight. Ostapenko took the tennis world by

:06:00. > :06:04.storm in Paris. She is a staggeringly entertaining person to

:06:05. > :06:10.watch although I imagine unbearably frustrating to coach because the

:06:11. > :06:15.forehand especially, when that is going well, it is like watching

:06:16. > :06:20.Steffi Graf. But there is not much percentage tennis. As you say it

:06:21. > :06:25.makes her difficult to play because normally the feeling that someone

:06:26. > :06:30.might just come down to third gear at key moments, she does not, she

:06:31. > :06:35.goes after the ball. It is probably why she will become a popular figure

:06:36. > :06:40.because she just goes after it. It is difficult to get rhythm that way

:06:41. > :06:45.because you do not know what will come off the racket and she keeps

:06:46. > :06:49.going after it. If you were coaching her, could you incorporate into her

:06:50. > :06:55.game, just get it back and see where we are, or would that diminish the

:06:56. > :07:00.product? I think so, sometimes you can say where you will play it with

:07:01. > :07:04.the same offensive hit. She will go after the ball, but what I enjoyed

:07:05. > :07:10.was hearing the coaching, it was terrific coaching. You get a mixed

:07:11. > :07:15.bag on some coaching moments but she was clear with a plan and when you

:07:16. > :07:19.hit the ball that hard and that often, if you know where you will

:07:20. > :07:22.play at it takes some of the decision-making away and you can

:07:23. > :07:31.focus on execution. How would you assess Johanna Konta's performance.

:07:32. > :07:36.She has just beaten French Open champion and that is good. She

:07:37. > :07:40.played a long match and she was down in the third set. Quite a day to

:07:41. > :07:44.beat the French Open champion and world number one in the same date.

:07:45. > :07:52.You would have to say that would be above average! But she have earned

:07:53. > :07:57.it. A quick word about the business at Eastbourne. It has been a

:07:58. > :08:01.phenomenal few days and even allowing for weather interruptions

:08:02. > :08:08.and the reason for that is Novak Djokovic sprinkling stardust on

:08:09. > :08:13.sleepy Eastbourne. It is great for the game. For people to watch

:08:14. > :08:19.someone of his stature within world sport, to be able to watch him at

:08:20. > :08:22.close quarters in this environment? It is, and Gavin Fletcher the

:08:23. > :08:26.tournament director when he got the call from his team saying he would

:08:27. > :08:30.like to come down, he must have fallen off his chair and then some

:08:31. > :08:36.because that is a great phone call to get. The layout at the practice

:08:37. > :08:41.courts, you are at the side, you can get the sound of the ball hitting

:08:42. > :08:46.the strings, how hard he is working. You are a matter of feet away from

:08:47. > :08:51.one of the greatest ever players. It is huge for the tournament and it

:08:52. > :08:55.has caused a lot of excitement. Depending on when the phone call

:08:56. > :09:02.came, he might have thought it was somebody in the bar somewhere! This

:09:03. > :09:11.is the men's drawer. We cannot show the men's matches for contractual

:09:12. > :09:20.reasons. Djokovic, he will play Medvedev. He will be a big star in

:09:21. > :09:24.the years to come. Gael Monfils has beaten Bernard Tomic. They both seem

:09:25. > :09:32.to be grinning all the way through that. John Isner against Richard

:09:33. > :09:37.Gasquet is a match of contrasts. An interesting semifinal line-up in the

:09:38. > :09:40.men's draw. We have Simona Halep playing

:09:41. > :09:43.Caroline Wozniacki now on Centre Court. What did you make of Simona

:09:44. > :09:52.Halep falling at the final hurdle in Paris? Having had another look at

:09:53. > :09:56.Ostapenko, you can see how it would happen. Sometimes you look at the

:09:57. > :10:00.player who have the lead, like Simona Halep, but there was someone

:10:01. > :10:04.on the other end of the court to have something to say about it

:10:05. > :10:11.because of the way they played. It is not about a collapse. Her game

:10:12. > :10:15.style is not to go after the ball. She is solid, in incredible mover,

:10:16. > :10:19.she will grind opponents down but when Ostapenko goes up a gear from

:10:20. > :10:24.nowhere, it is difficult to change your game and it runs away with you

:10:25. > :10:30.at Ostapenko then got a wave of confidence. She will have other

:10:31. > :10:36.moments in her career. She is too good not to create moments when she

:10:37. > :10:40.will challenge for Grand Slams. Now is the time, and that is a good

:10:41. > :10:45.thing about what happened from Paris, not a huge amount of time,

:10:46. > :10:54.you can regroup and get focused. She is a Harrier and she scurries. Is it

:10:55. > :10:57.more of an advantage on clay? Yes she becomes difficult to break down

:10:58. > :11:03.on the clay court as we have seen many times. On the grass, players

:11:04. > :11:07.can get more free service point winners so do not have too

:11:08. > :11:11.entertained long exchanges, or they can get first strike in the points

:11:12. > :11:15.and attack the second serve. But she is a good player and the way the

:11:16. > :11:20.court is playing, it is quicker here, and in Wimbledon you can get

:11:21. > :11:26.more extended points. For her, it will be the clay she has more

:11:27. > :11:31.opportunities on. We will let you go back to the commentary box. You are

:11:32. > :11:36.earning your body today! This is the next live match. Depending on what

:11:37. > :11:41.happens later for Heather Watson and Johanna Konta, you will be able to

:11:42. > :11:43.see those matches on the red button later, depending on the schedule.

:11:44. > :11:55.Here we go with the next match. COMMENTATOR: I will time Leon Smith

:11:56. > :12:32.from studio back to commentary box. A fifth meeting between these two.

:12:33. > :12:40.Expect a big hitting from the baseline from these two. The second

:12:41. > :12:45.Match Of The Day with the Straits sets win for Wozniacki against

:12:46. > :12:46.Vesnina. Simona Halep was playing a match that continued from last

:12:47. > :13:00.night. Wozniacki entered the tournament

:13:01. > :13:06.last year in the 30s in terms of ranking. She has moved up 30 places

:13:07. > :13:08.to number six in the world. And number six seed here. A former

:13:09. > :13:41.winner in 2009. By contrast for Simona Halep, it is

:13:42. > :13:46.her Eastbourne debut. Taking a wildcard in the event and playing

:13:47. > :13:53.her first event since losing in the French Open and also her first grass

:13:54. > :14:17.event, for Caroline Wozniacki, who is looking for her fourth semifinal.

:14:18. > :14:26.It is going to be slightly brittle from the back of the court from

:14:27. > :14:29.these two. Both aggressive on the baseline, good on defence, good

:14:30. > :14:31.movement. The first time they have met since 2015 and their first

:14:32. > :15:30.meeting on grass. Great accuracy from the Romanian.

:15:31. > :15:32.Fought - zero becomes deuce, first game of this contest at Barbora

:15:33. > :15:36.Strycova or Heather Watson awaits the winner in the semifinals, their

:15:37. > :15:39.match to come a little later due to all of the bad weather we have had

:15:40. > :15:43.barring the first day which was glorious. And had to play match

:15:44. > :16:18.after match just to catch things are. -- 40-0.

:16:19. > :16:23.It is good hitting for both of them but for the moment it is Simona

:16:24. > :16:34.Halep forcing the errors off the racket of the Dane. Opting to wrap

:16:35. > :16:36.up a bit in the long sleeve top and three quarters length leggings

:16:37. > :16:39.underneath the skirt. Conditions have warmed up a bit but it's still

:16:40. > :17:19.cooler than it has been. What a shot from Halep. From 40-0,

:17:20. > :17:25.Wozniacki, she is broken. Simona Halep takes that game. It is the

:17:26. > :17:26.fifth meeting between these two. For Simona Halep it's been a pretty good

:17:27. > :17:50.season. She likes playing on clay. Looking for a bit of confirmation

:17:51. > :17:54.from the chair umpire. Wozniacki saying if it was a bit later on I

:17:55. > :17:59.might have challenged. As it is Simona Halep has game, break and the

:18:00. > :18:21.balls and now serve. With their heavy breathing you might

:18:22. > :18:29.be able to hear it is Leon coming up the stairs. That was tough work! I

:18:30. > :18:31.don't think it was a record. I got stopped at the barrier, the Stuarts

:18:32. > :18:47.did their job. It is a fairway from the studio to

:18:48. > :18:50.hear. As the weather gets warmer I bet you have found more and more

:18:51. > :18:57.people throwing rocks at around the court. I was pretty nimble. I was

:18:58. > :19:15.trying to give you some excuses. I was slow, that's it. It's OK.

:19:16. > :19:20.Immediate break back points for Caroline Wozniacki, a lot quicker

:19:21. > :19:25.than the Wozniacki serve when she won the first three only to be

:19:26. > :19:37.broken. Simona Halep lost the first three on serve.

:19:38. > :19:48.Loose shot from Halep, break to love. What we are going to see is

:19:49. > :19:53.lots of aggressive hitting from the baseline. Yes and probably a lot of

:19:54. > :19:57.rallies as well. Both more comfortable with extended points.

:19:58. > :20:01.They both play aggressive tennis but it's mainly at the back of the court

:20:02. > :20:04.and they both like to move a lot. Both players enjoy that side of the

:20:05. > :20:08.game and pride themselves on their ability to cover the court really

:20:09. > :20:16.well. So this could be a really long one.

:20:17. > :20:22.I mentioned it's their first meeting since 2015 and their first meeting

:20:23. > :21:12.on grass which might change things a little.

:21:13. > :21:19.We should not be surprised to see that type of rally. Both players

:21:20. > :21:24.trying to move around the court but in the end excellent from Halep

:21:25. > :21:52.opening up the court. S we still have the westerly breeze

:21:53. > :21:57.going from left to right and I'm pretty sure I've seen the sun. There

:21:58. > :21:59.is a bit of sun around. Not a lot left now. I will be honest. Clinging

:22:00. > :22:16.onto some sun. That is the first hold of the match

:22:17. > :22:24.and it goes the way of Caroline Wozniacki, holds to 15. The last

:22:25. > :22:29.game is an example may be of where Wozniacki on a grass court might

:22:30. > :22:34.have the slight edge, the ability to take the ball that little bit

:22:35. > :22:39.earlier. Flatten out the ball a little bit more. She will certainly

:22:40. > :22:44.not look to come forward is that much but she can make her swings

:22:45. > :22:48.that little bit more compact and take it away from Halep who prefers

:22:49. > :22:54.to sit deeper and control points from behind the baseline. You think

:22:55. > :23:00.if Wozniacki can keep imposing herself that bit more inside the

:23:01. > :23:05.court near the baseline, that could give her the edge. Something we

:23:06. > :23:09.spoke about a little earlier with Sam, Wozniacki's first match, was

:23:10. > :23:13.the work ethic of Caroline Wozniacki. She has been as high as

:23:14. > :23:18.world number one. Lots of people say she never won a Grand Slam, Wilshere

:23:19. > :23:23.true Grand Slam? She was, she has 25 single titles to her name and

:23:24. > :23:30.despite slipping down the rankings she is back at world number six. It

:23:31. > :23:36.is a phenomenal career. To get to number one is about the process of

:23:37. > :23:39.day-to-day work. We talked about Andy Murray's experiences, what he

:23:40. > :23:43.had to go through to get to that moment, and she will have done the

:23:44. > :23:49.same. It is the consistency of the work and approach that gets you to

:23:50. > :23:52.your number one ranking. Perhaps she has not had the weapons to go

:23:53. > :23:58.through the slams to win the major title. But certainly she will be

:23:59. > :24:02.very proud. I read somewhere she is eighth in the all-time list of

:24:03. > :24:08.earnings. Her bank account would suggests she has had a pretty good

:24:09. > :24:32.career. Plenty of money shots off the racket of Caroline Wozniacki.

:24:33. > :24:38.I think if you are a spectator it would be wise to take a break at the

:24:39. > :24:44.end of the Konta match because we could be here for a while. They

:24:45. > :24:50.could be. What is amazing is the extra match the ladies have to play

:24:51. > :24:54.today. Get the match done, if you win, back in the locker room, sort

:24:55. > :25:01.yourself out and back out on court. It is not easy and not something the

:25:02. > :25:02.players are used to. The good thing is everyone is in the same boat

:25:03. > :25:18.today. Simona Halep is yet to win a point

:25:19. > :25:42.on serve. Didn't leave much margin, Halep.

:25:43. > :25:48.Good to see her being offensive in that play. She will have to do more

:25:49. > :25:51.like that against Wozniacki, who looks to be the one taking the ball

:25:52. > :25:53.that bit earlier. Interesting to see what she does on this second serve

:25:54. > :26:04.opportunity. She didn't have to do much.

:26:05. > :26:14.Disappointing for Halep so far. Just one point, two service games.

:26:15. > :26:20.Caroline Wozniacki, 3-1. First set. Fifth meeting. Between herself and

:26:21. > :26:21.Simona Halep. Halep, the world number two, could become the world

:26:22. > :26:39.number one by the end of this week. That is a good return from Halep but

:26:40. > :26:43.Wozniacki managed to hold her ground on the baseline, although she missed

:26:44. > :26:44.it it is a good sign she is looking to stay as close to the baseline as

:26:45. > :27:49.possible. It's just so clean from Wozniacki at

:27:50. > :27:56.the moment. I watched her match against Elena Vesnina, she was so

:27:57. > :28:00.clean around the court. It helps as well when she is serving like she

:28:01. > :28:03.has started here, not the biggest serve but she is hitting it well and

:28:04. > :28:09.keeps her percentage up, she should be able to get onto the second shot

:28:10. > :28:15.in the rally. Big serving from Caroline Wozniacki. There will be a

:28:16. > :28:20.challenge. Both players will wait. I am not sure the call is going to

:28:21. > :28:29.change. Just hovering near the benches. UMPIRE: The call stands.

:28:30. > :28:36.There it is, the court stands. Caroline Wozniacki takes a 4-1 lead.

:28:37. > :28:40.In the first set. It is pretty quiet on the court just now. It is

:28:41. > :28:46.understandable after the Konta match which just finished, which was a

:28:47. > :28:48.terrific match full of entertainment, especially with the

:28:49. > :28:52.home girl playing in front of her home crowd. This match has started

:28:53. > :28:59.with one-way traffic now with Wozniacki completely in control. The

:29:00. > :29:03.way you look at it, Halep does not look particularly comfortable just

:29:04. > :29:06.now. Often when she has had such success on the clay she relies so

:29:07. > :29:11.much on her movement and ability to slide into the shops, hang in on

:29:12. > :29:18.some of the points and build the points much more on her terms. She

:29:19. > :29:22.will have to make some adjustments. Something I touched upon was the

:29:23. > :29:24.possibility of a number one ranking change. For Halep to get it with

:29:25. > :29:31.Angelique Kerber already progressing to the quarterfinals Halep would

:29:32. > :29:33.have to get the and they have to lift the trophy depending on

:29:34. > :29:39.Angelique Kerber ends up. Pliskova is also in the mix it is incredible

:29:40. > :29:44.in this situation, a handful of women could be number one by the

:29:45. > :29:49.start of next week. It is and you have done the maths brilliantly. All

:29:50. > :29:53.I can say is there is a bit of tennis to be played. Does it away on

:29:54. > :29:57.a player's mind? Are we just obsessed with rankings and points

:29:58. > :30:04.and who is doing what, or are they aware of it? -- weigh on a player's

:30:05. > :30:07.mind. Those that have not had the number one next event name it is

:30:08. > :30:12.huge gnome Dummett moment and those who have been number one, less so.

:30:13. > :30:16.Roger Federer has talked about it and he said it's not so much about

:30:17. > :30:20.the number one, it's winning those titles. If you ask either of the two

:30:21. > :30:22.on court right now what they want I would think they slam title will be

:30:23. > :30:37.the one at the top of their list. That is better play. This is what

:30:38. > :30:42.Halep will have to find herself doing, start dictating some more of

:30:43. > :30:46.the points, she cannot rely on the one being hustling down in the

:30:47. > :31:00.rallies. She will have to start being more offensive.

:31:01. > :31:07.That wasn't the best of football skills from Wozniacki. Is she a

:31:08. > :31:25.Liverpool fan? Yes, she's a big Liverpool fan.

:31:26. > :31:36.A little bit loose from Caroline Wozniacki. Just a bit. That is what

:31:37. > :31:41.Halep can do, she is good if she can get a service hold and start getting

:31:42. > :31:51.some confidence. As the sun makes a brief appearance.

:31:52. > :31:58.There we go, that will make Simona Halep feel a little better. It's her

:31:59. > :31:59.first service hold up until this game she had just won the point on

:32:00. > :32:20.serve. 4-2 Wozniacki with the break. Players are having to make their own

:32:21. > :32:37.energy out here just now. Incredible field. Eight of the top

:32:38. > :32:42.ten started in this tournament. Yes, it's very strong. We were talking

:32:43. > :32:46.about that earlier. Tournament director Gavin Fletcher probably

:32:47. > :32:59.couldn't believe what was happening. The women's field is very strong.

:33:00. > :33:04.Simona Halep said she was very grateful to have been given a

:33:05. > :33:11.wildcard. Can you imagine ringing of the tournament and they said, no,

:33:12. > :33:15.sorry, we are full. It's a good bit of business for the tour here

:33:16. > :33:25.getting players like Halep for free, Djokovic.

:33:26. > :33:33.Welcome Wozniacki is currently serving, 71% first serves in, which

:33:34. > :33:37.is obviously very good. It is not giving Halep the opportunity to get

:33:38. > :33:42.the look on the second serve when she could have an opportunity to get

:33:43. > :34:01.on the return. UMPIRE: The call is being

:34:02. > :34:07.challenged. The ball was called in. So many challenges today. We have

:34:08. > :34:11.Hawk-Eye on the squad. Maybe if they'd play on the outside courts,

:34:12. > :34:20.and then they come here, they put in a few challenges. Just go for it.

:34:21. > :34:45.UMPIRE: Replay the point. This Wozniacki has challenges remaining.

:34:46. > :34:51.It is great use of the court from Caroline Wozniacki. She holds serve,

:34:52. > :34:55.once again she looks comfortable, aside from being broken in the first

:34:56. > :34:59.game of this first set she has looked comfortable and less taken

:35:00. > :35:04.the lead 5-2. She is dictating nearly all of the points. She is

:35:05. > :35:10.obviously getting a lot of help from her first serve. She is serving 70%,

:35:11. > :35:14.around that mark, she will be able to get the first hit in the rally as

:35:15. > :35:19.well and she is doing it to good effect. Rang out because one-way

:35:20. > :35:22.traffic, she has won more than pretty much doubled the number of

:35:23. > :35:28.points so far so Halep will have to change something. Maybe like we

:35:29. > :35:34.discussed in the previous match, do they call the coach on for some on

:35:35. > :35:37.court coaching where most of the top players will resist that because

:35:38. > :35:42.obviously in preparation for Wimbledon when they cannot ask for

:35:43. > :35:45.their personal coach to come on the court to give some coaching then it

:35:46. > :35:52.makes sense to figure things out for yourself at this moment. Whether or

:35:53. > :35:56.not there is some help needed for Halep to try and get herself into

:35:57. > :36:00.the match in some way. Is there something you have seen in the first

:36:01. > :36:05.seven games about the way Halep has changed if you were her coach Andy

:36:06. > :36:13.had come on court? I think the obvious thing is she has to try and

:36:14. > :36:18.even win or lose more points on her own terms. Right now it is basically

:36:19. > :36:22.if Wozniacki wants to step up and dictate the point she does it. How

:36:23. > :36:26.can she do that? Make sure she gets her first serve percentage up, it is

:36:27. > :36:30.around 53 right now and she hasn't got a great second serve. She must

:36:31. > :36:33.get the first serve percentage up and try and stay closer to the

:36:34. > :36:36.baseline and be the one that gets Wozniacki moving a little more. It

:36:37. > :36:52.is probably easier said than done. There you go, there is a really good

:36:53. > :36:55.example, using the serve welcome opening of the court with that

:36:56. > :36:57.swinging wide serve and then be prepared to be aggressive on the

:36:58. > :37:33.next forehand. Not far. I mentioned it was the

:37:34. > :37:38.first grass court tournament for both of them. In terms of their

:37:39. > :37:42.pedigree on the grass, Wozniacki has more of one, including being the

:37:43. > :38:03.winner here in 2009. Looking for her fourth Eastbourne semifinal.

:38:04. > :38:09.That double fault probably the result of knowing what will happen

:38:10. > :38:17.next, she tried to put a bit extra on it. It is just coming back with

:38:18. > :38:21.interest at the moment. That is a terrific return on any surface. It

:38:22. > :38:22.works well if you can hit the ball back deep through the middle of the

:38:23. > :38:38.court. Well, that's unusual. We don't often

:38:39. > :38:45.see many of them. Hitting the forehand. That certainly wasn't

:38:46. > :39:01.intentional. But she will take it. She needs it.

:39:02. > :39:11.Slight pause while we find a rogue Paul Black needs collecting. --

:39:12. > :39:29.rogue ball that needs collecting. Another challenge. UMPIRE: The call

:39:30. > :39:33.stands. She was playing on court four earlier, there was no Hawk-Eye.

:39:34. > :39:53.That was the carry-over match against Pironkova.

:39:54. > :40:02.There we can see the qualities that Halep does have on any surface, the

:40:03. > :40:05.ability to return the point in the first place by scraping around,

:40:06. > :40:27.defending, but then she turned it well there.

:40:28. > :40:35.Looked a bit unsure as she made her way towards the net, Wozniacki,

:40:36. > :40:38.Simona Halep holds serve but the difficulty for Halep is she cannot

:40:39. > :40:43.get anything off the Wozniacki serve aside from the first game. She must

:40:44. > :40:47.look for the opportunity to defend the first serve as best you can

:40:48. > :40:53.neutralise it. On the second serve situation, she try and impose

:40:54. > :41:01.herself that little bit more. Wozniacki is serving for the set.

:41:02. > :41:11.UMPIRE: Fault, Miss Wozniacki is challenging the call. The ball was

:41:12. > :41:14.called out. There is not much crowd interaction. There is normally some

:41:15. > :41:23.kind of clapping going on. I can hear a couple of people. There was a

:41:24. > :41:37.little Ooo from the crowd. It just looks, doesn't it, that

:41:38. > :41:43.Wozniacki has got that bit more power, she has more of a physical

:41:44. > :41:46.presence out there, the weight of shot, especially on these crooked

:41:47. > :42:02.Eastbourne courts, the ball is carrying that bit faster through it.

:42:03. > :42:12.That is a great point. The way she utilises the clay-court game she has

:42:13. > :42:18.and uses the angles on the court, she is able to open it up really

:42:19. > :42:21.well. That is her job, exposed the movement of Wozniacki as much as

:42:22. > :42:30.possible, get her off balance when she can.

:42:31. > :42:38.Set up wonderfully from the serve. Yes, she just waited and waited for

:42:39. > :42:42.that ball. I thought she had left it to drop too low before she hit it

:42:43. > :42:43.but she waited until she saw way Halep would move so she could send

:42:44. > :43:47.it the other way. No challenge? No challenge but it's

:43:48. > :43:51.amazing how quickly became concerned and now this pressure on the

:43:52. > :43:58.Wozniacki serve, and double fault at 30-15 proving costly. The first

:43:59. > :44:08.break point since the first game for Wozniacki to try to save.

:44:09. > :44:18.And there it is, the set goes on. Simona Halep breaks, gets us back on

:44:19. > :44:21.serve, Wozniacki 5-4. That was a cheap game to give away from

:44:22. > :44:27.Wozniacki's point of view with that double fault and then she wasn't

:44:28. > :44:30.under a huge amount of pressure, even on the last backhand, just a

:44:31. > :44:34.couple of steps away, and wasn't able to control over the net, but at

:44:35. > :44:41.least we saw Halep able to take the ball on a bit more there. Certainly

:44:42. > :44:47.started to show she's able to play more offensive tennis. Simona Halep

:44:48. > :44:50.talked about this after losing to Ostapenko in the final of the

:44:51. > :44:54.French, she wanted to win, it was her second final and she said she

:44:55. > :44:58.wanted to win for her coach, Darren Cahill. It must have hurt and she

:44:59. > :45:02.did a very gracious speech on court and then it was about how quickly

:45:03. > :45:07.she could regroup for a few days, she went on holiday. It feels like

:45:08. > :45:12.mentally she is in a good place, she is ready to carry on. That must be

:45:13. > :45:16.tough to put behind you. It must have been bitterly, bitterly

:45:17. > :45:23.disappointing. You know, she was the much talked about favourite command

:45:24. > :45:27.as much as she tries to that await from the focus of what she can do on

:45:28. > :45:32.the court, you are aware of it. It is a surface that she is definitely

:45:33. > :45:36.the strongest on. Everything points in the direction of the Halep win.

:45:37. > :45:43.The good thing, which I mentioned earlier, is the timeline is between

:45:44. > :45:50.French Open finishing and Wimbledon starting is that time when you have

:45:51. > :45:53.to park the disappointment and start focusing on the next Grand Slam.

:45:54. > :45:57.That is what she will have been able to do. She said in recent weeks and

:45:58. > :45:59.months she has worked on the mental side of things, Simona Halep, to

:46:00. > :46:26.make herself stronger mentally. You felt she just saw Halep charging

:46:27. > :46:30.towards that size. No doubt that put her off. That feeling of, I had

:46:31. > :46:32.better hit it that little bit harder because I know she will get to the

:46:33. > :46:48.ball. That is the type of point, if you

:46:49. > :46:51.are in the Halep coaching team, that is encouraging, that she is

:46:52. > :47:00.gradually starting to assert herself, using the forehand as a

:47:01. > :47:05.weapon, which is a good sign. She has had tough 3-set matches to get

:47:06. > :47:24.to this match. That is much better. When she sits

:47:25. > :47:27.on that backhand as she did at the start of the match, probably to

:47:28. > :47:33.content to trade on the ball, and now she is running around the

:47:34. > :47:40.backhand more often, looking to pull the trigger on the forehand.

:47:41. > :47:47.When she is in full flight, Simona Halep, she is graceful to watch,

:47:48. > :47:53.very elegant. She is praised for her fighting spirit and her court

:47:54. > :47:59.coverage, which is exceptional. But a lot of times, people watch that,

:48:00. > :48:03.and when you are defending, counterattacking, but if you have

:48:04. > :48:08.court coverage as she does you can use it offensively to get around a

:48:09. > :48:24.backhand, look for your forehand, get up to the ball early.

:48:25. > :48:30.That is absolutely exceptional. There is a challenge, but if ever

:48:31. > :48:38.you saw a player who earned a point, it was probably that one. She

:48:39. > :48:43.covered a lot of ground, Halep. That is a final challenge for Caroline

:48:44. > :49:03.Wozniacki. Plumb on the line. An amazing point from Halep.

:49:04. > :49:10.Great stuff from these two. The amount of court they will cover in

:49:11. > :50:07.this contest, it is going to be quite incredible.

:50:08. > :50:13.She did pretty much everything right there, Halep. You do not often see

:50:14. > :50:21.her coming towards the net but she had quite a good backhand during the

:50:22. > :50:23.point, giving her the shorter ball. The breezy conditions making the

:50:24. > :50:40.last ball tricky. There it is. Running around the

:50:41. > :50:47.backhand, hitting the forehand. Does seem to have a lot of time on the

:50:48. > :50:49.ball, Halep. As the set has gone on, she has got more aggressive with her

:50:50. > :51:31.play. What's defence from Simona Halep.

:51:32. > :51:35.That is terrific to see. Wozniacki controlling the point, sending Halep

:51:36. > :51:39.side to side, but there we see the best of her defensive qualities. Not

:51:40. > :51:41.just getting to the ball is impressive, it is what she can do

:51:42. > :51:59.when she gets there. That is the type of thing that can

:52:00. > :52:03.have an affect on the opponent. I'm sure Wozniacki did not want another

:52:04. > :52:09.exchange like they just had, so that was not easy to go for, not the line

:52:10. > :52:21.winner. Halep looking for back-to-back breaks.

:52:22. > :52:29.And she has got it. How things change in tennis, how quickly things

:52:30. > :52:34.change. From serving for the set, Wozniacki will have to break the

:52:35. > :52:37.Halep serve to stay in this first set and this is what we love about

:52:38. > :52:43.the game, how quickly things can change. It is amazing. We said it

:52:44. > :52:48.throughout that set that Wozniacki was controlling everything put to

:52:49. > :52:58.the credit of Halep, she has problem solved herself. Wozniacki has called

:52:59. > :53:09.on her father. Not that I can do anything to help the translation. We

:53:10. > :53:18.might have some Polish listeners who can translate.

:53:19. > :53:28.What do you think? Have you got any words? No, but I am quite enjoying

:53:29. > :53:57.the exchange between the two of them.

:53:58. > :54:12.I think I heard the word positive. Well, there was a Lott said! Is that

:54:13. > :54:23.all you have got? I'm afraid I cannot translate. But it was good

:54:24. > :54:27.time to bring your coach. That momentum has completely gone from

:54:28. > :54:31.her that she had early in the set. The way Halep has played, she will

:54:32. > :54:35.have to do something significant to stop that. The father and coach of

:54:36. > :54:48.Caroline Wozniacki. Simona Halep three points away from

:54:49. > :55:16.the first set. Now it is Wozniacki who cannot get

:55:17. > :55:53.near the Halep serve. She is finding and mailing those

:55:54. > :55:55.lines, Simona Halep. With 44 minutes played, we have a couple of set

:55:56. > :56:09.points for the world number two. And she just needs the one. A fist

:56:10. > :56:16.pump over to her team. Simona Halep hat to come from behind, get the

:56:17. > :56:20.lead, and with 44 minutes played, she takes the first set against

:56:21. > :56:23.Caroline Wozniacki. STUDIO: There is fantastic tennis

:56:24. > :56:33.being played today. The quarterfinals are taking place. What

:56:34. > :56:39.has led to this situation is Heather Watson beat Pavlyuchenkova in

:56:40. > :56:43.straight sets. She is waiting to play her quarterfinal match against

:56:44. > :56:47.Barbora Strycova and not only is what's on in the last date but so is

:56:48. > :56:52.the British number one Jo Konta, who came through a magnificent match

:56:53. > :56:59.against Ostapenko, the French Open champion, in three sets. She plays

:57:00. > :57:06.Angelique Kerber. The other quarterfinal is Karolina Pliskova

:57:07. > :57:09.against Kuznetsova. We will have Angelique Kerber against Johanna

:57:10. > :57:17.Konta and that match will not be on before 6pm which means will -- we

:57:18. > :57:23.will be on the red button at that point. We will be on the red button

:57:24. > :57:29.all the time along with our coverage here on BBC Two.

:57:30. > :57:37.By the way, we are on tomorrow, 1pm, BBC Two.

:57:38. > :57:43.Thank you, John. The sun is shining and more people are taking their

:57:44. > :57:50.places, but I think they had a well-deserved break after the Jo

:57:51. > :57:56.Konta match. I think they have heard we are getting some good ball

:57:57. > :58:00.striking and they have come back in. Two phenomenal players, two of the

:58:01. > :58:09.best in the game. Such is the strength of the field in the women's

:58:10. > :58:13.event. Half the crowd bathing in nice sunshine and half,

:58:14. > :58:17.unfortunately for them, or in the shade. Some are under the roof,

:58:18. > :58:20.which earlier in the week was the place to sit. Not now. They still

:58:21. > :58:33.have a pretty good view. Work to do for Wozniacki. The winner

:58:34. > :58:59.here in 2009. A set down to Simona Halep.

:59:00. > :59:07.This is an important moment for Wozniacki to re-establish herself in

:59:08. > :59:22.the match. She has been so dominant for a large part of the first set.

:59:23. > :59:30.Now you see Halep, her eyes wide open. She knows that Wozniacki will

:59:31. > :59:36.be feeling very disappointed with how the first set runaway. Now is

:59:37. > :59:54.the time for Halep to turn the screw as much as possible.

:59:55. > :59:59.Halep broke in the first game of the first set. Looking to do the same

:00:00. > :00:36.here. She has three opportunities. Oh, dear, Caroline Wozniacki, double

:00:37. > :00:40.fault, broken to love, first game, second set. We spoke about the

:00:41. > :00:46.importance of that game for Wozniacki and it was over in the

:00:47. > :00:51.blink of an eye. Sammy, tree earlier was telling me about the research

:00:52. > :00:55.data they have collated from what happens after on court coaching and

:00:56. > :01:01.the success it has had but unfortunately it has not had that

:01:02. > :01:05.effect on Wozniacki. Weak start. She will have to snap out of this

:01:06. > :01:52.quickly. Halep will not change what she is doing.

:01:53. > :02:01.Good serving from Halep. Did not start the best, but she has warmed

:02:02. > :02:07.into it. She has come about is an ideal serve for her. She is not

:02:08. > :02:11.going to serve above that sort of speed. It is just mailing the

:02:12. > :02:17.placement. That is important. When you serve around a hundred mark,

:02:18. > :02:18.which she is, that accuracy and also the variety that she can offer is

:02:19. > :02:42.important. There is the point, the game, the

:02:43. > :02:47.consolidation of the break for the Romania. It will be interesting to

:02:48. > :02:52.see the next service game of Caroline Wozniacki. I think praise

:02:53. > :02:59.Halep. She has upped her game from what was a poor start. And now she

:03:00. > :03:05.is aggressive, focus. She is doing everything well. It will take

:03:06. > :03:35.Wozniacki to really up her game significantly now.

:03:36. > :03:44.Even Halep, who loves to run chase every ball, she decided enough is

:03:45. > :04:13.enough that. Great play from both ladies, though.

:04:14. > :04:29.I mean, it is quiet out there just now. It really is.

:04:30. > :04:41.Maybe it is quiet appreciation. It could be. That was a better point

:04:42. > :04:47.from Wozniacki. Costly in the point previous way she missed the

:04:48. > :05:01.forehand. That was a poor miss. But that was better.

:05:02. > :05:07.It is amazing with Halep, she goes forward but immediately retreats

:05:08. > :05:13.back to the baseline where she feels comfortable. She will not be looking

:05:14. > :05:16.to go to the net. Very rarely will she venture there. She is

:05:17. > :05:33.understanding where her strength lie and is playing to that.

:05:34. > :05:44.She tried to change things up, Wozniacki, and she drew Halep

:05:45. > :05:48.forward. It was not a bad play, to bring Halep into the net, where she

:05:49. > :05:51.does not want to be, but she could not control the passing shot. Halep

:05:52. > :06:14.was very quick up to the drop shot. Huge, huge shot and point from

:06:15. > :06:23.Simona Halep. She takes another break point opportunity. Hats off to

:06:24. > :06:30.Halep. As much as Wozniacki dipped, has dipped, Halep's level has really

:06:31. > :06:35.improved, dramatically improved from where it started in the match. She

:06:36. > :06:41.is doing everything well now. We know she will move and hustle well

:06:42. > :06:46.and defend great. Now, anything that is slightly short on the court she

:06:47. > :06:52.latches on with confidence, takes it early. And she is serving well. Her

:06:53. > :06:56.game has moved to a good level. She did not get down on herself in the

:06:57. > :07:06.first set when she was trailing and getting nothing from the Wozniacki

:07:07. > :07:11.serve. For Darren Cahill, it was the attitude of Simona Halep. She said

:07:12. > :07:17.it was shock therapy and she went away and worked on things. She seems

:07:18. > :07:22.to be stronger in these situations. She has spoken openly about that

:07:23. > :07:27.situation with Cahill and it scared her, because they have a very good

:07:28. > :07:31.relationship. It has been working well. It would have frightened her,

:07:32. > :07:36.losing the coach she wants to work with. She will know he can move on

:07:37. > :07:42.to pastures new, he would be sought after. She had to fight to keep the

:07:43. > :07:47.coach, and fight she has done. A terrific run in Paris. Even here,

:07:48. > :07:55.you can see that mentality. She is in a very good place. She won the

:07:56. > :07:59.title in Madrid on the clay. There were doubts about her coming into

:08:00. > :08:14.Paris, and she made her way through to the final.

:08:15. > :08:18.Very quick between points, Halep. Does not take a lot of time to get

:08:19. > :08:55.into the service motion. It is amazing, the amount of ground

:08:56. > :08:58.Halep covers. She just looked over to her box, to confirm that was

:08:59. > :09:31.indeed the right call. Got the thumbs up.

:09:32. > :09:34.UMPIRE: Miss Wozniacki is challenging the call. She had a long

:09:35. > :09:50.look. There was a real pause. I think Hawk-Eye was surprise. They

:09:51. > :09:56.were nowhere near ready to push the buttons on that one.

:09:57. > :10:10.Both players being told it is coming.

:10:11. > :10:37.That was good play from Halep. Excellent depth on the forehand.

:10:38. > :10:44.Wayward from the Romanian, who discards these spare ball in

:10:45. > :10:52.disgust. She still has a break, but Wozniacki has got one back. What do

:10:53. > :10:58.you put that game down to? Bad for Halep, all good for Wozniacki? Good

:10:59. > :11:02.for Wozniacki. Her spirit and attitude were there. She had to play

:11:03. > :11:07.long rallies and she looked determined to make every ball. I

:11:08. > :11:39.think she earned the right to get a break back.

:11:40. > :11:46.That was not an easy shot. Showing excellent racket skills to be able

:11:47. > :12:09.to whip the ball with as much spin. Suddenly, Wozniacki is feeling a lot

:12:10. > :12:11.better about herself. We have had exactly one hour on court in this

:12:12. > :13:08.quarterfinal match. There it is. A shift in momentum.

:13:09. > :13:14.Wozniacki breaks the serve of Simona Halep, she holds and Halep still

:13:15. > :13:17.leads in the second set. STUDIO: It has been a tremendous

:13:18. > :13:23.morning and afternoon and still three hours to go. For people who

:13:24. > :13:29.got in with a ?7 ground pass, it has been one of the great days. We are

:13:30. > :13:33.on BBC Two tomorrow at 1pm. From Eastbourne, we will swap the blue

:13:34. > :13:44.sky for the red button right now. We will see you tomorrow at one.

:13:45. > :13:48.COMMENTATOR: That is a popular outcome to the end of this opening

:13:49. > :14:00.set. What a response from Ostapenko.

:14:01. > :14:02.It is battling brilliance from Jo Konta.
