:00:31. > :00:36.With just minutes to go before Andy Murray embarks on the last

:00:36. > :00:43.tournament of the year, the final countdown has started on what has

:00:43. > :00:48.been a memorable season for the Scot. Title secured across three

:00:48. > :00:53.continents. A brilliant win for Andy Murray. He is the champion at

:00:53. > :01:00.Queen's Club again. Grandstand semi-finals reached, the set that

:01:00. > :01:10.man ever to achieve the feat of four. His current world ranking is

:01:10. > :01:10.

:01:10. > :01:15.three, should he maintain it will be his best ever. Naughty boy!

:01:15. > :01:20.Masters 1,000 series wins, equalling his best ever. One. Grand

:01:20. > :01:24.Slam final, though it ended in disappointment. Hopefully there is

:01:24. > :01:30.belief that he will come back again and have his day. His run at the

:01:30. > :01:35.Australian Open set a standard 40,011. Andy has never won tennis'

:01:35. > :01:45.end-of-season and Ali, but a victory this week could be a launch

:01:45. > :01:49.He will have plenty of support here, and while the talk is always about

:01:49. > :01:55.whether he can win a Grand Slam or not, this event is the next best

:01:55. > :01:59.thing. Welcome to date two of the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals and

:01:59. > :02:06.we are set for Andy Murray's opening match against and --

:02:06. > :02:10.against David Farrar. 10 and Andrew are with me a game, as the build-up

:02:10. > :02:14.starts behind us -- Tim Henman and Andrew are with me. It has been a

:02:14. > :02:19.terrific year for Andy Murray. Although he has not won a Grand

:02:19. > :02:23.Slam. For me, it has been his best year. I think he agrees with that.

:02:23. > :02:29.It is one of these moments when we should focus on what he was able to

:02:29. > :02:33.achieve, not what he was not able to achieve. He has won five

:02:33. > :02:37.tournaments, two Masters 1,000 events. When you look in the

:02:37. > :02:41.context of how many players have done this in a calendar year, it is

:02:41. > :02:47.only seven. It is a phenomenal achievement, but he wants more than

:02:47. > :02:51.that. I think next year he can and will win one forced on we think he

:02:51. > :02:56.can because he beats the top players on a break in the basis.

:02:56. > :03:01.Nadal got in the way this year. The 4th game of the second set in the

:03:01. > :03:05.Wimbledon semi-final, he missed that forehand, 15-30, and in the

:03:05. > :03:11.commentary box and the crowd, everybody went, oh, it was so

:03:11. > :03:15.surprising. He was on the way and it slipped after that miss. He is

:03:15. > :03:21.in esteemed company, he talks about it all the time, it is not an

:03:21. > :03:25.excuse, it is a great era of tennis. Djokovic elevated himself this year,

:03:25. > :03:29.can Andy Murray do that next it? I think he can. I think Federer still

:03:29. > :03:34.has more to give, but it is captivating at the top of the game.

:03:34. > :03:38.Federer has been the man in form in recent weeks. Let's look at the

:03:38. > :03:43.group's as they stand at the moment. This is what we are concentrating

:03:43. > :03:51.on today. First up, Andy Murray against David Ferrer. Also on the

:03:51. > :03:58.HD Channel this evening, Novak Djokovic against Tomas Berdych.

:03:58. > :04:06.Group B were in action yesterday, Federer-the Dow of -- of Federer

:04:06. > :04:11.and Nadal were involved in two marathons here. We can show you a

:04:11. > :04:16.bit of what happened in Nadal against Fish, Nadal raced away with

:04:16. > :04:25.the opening set but Fish fought back well, big serves in the second

:04:25. > :04:30.set and he took it by six games to The match level at one set all.

:04:30. > :04:34.Fish was proving a problem on court, but he was proving a problem off

:04:34. > :04:37.court as well because Nadal had to leave the court, he said he had

:04:37. > :04:42.salmon pasta that did not agree with him and had to have a bathroom

:04:43. > :04:46.break. He then lost three games in a row to go a break down in the

:04:46. > :04:51.final set but he fought back, as you would expect Rafael Nadal to

:04:51. > :04:57.always do, and he won it 7 points to 3 in the final set. It was an

:04:57. > :05:01.immense battle, wasn't it, for Rafa yesterday? Very much so, he had not

:05:01. > :05:05.played a great deal of tennis coming into this event, and it is

:05:05. > :05:08.different here because of the round-robin format. You can lose in

:05:08. > :05:13.the first match and still go through to the semi-finals but if

:05:13. > :05:20.you get that first win under your belt, it sets you up and his nest -

:05:20. > :05:27.- and his next match will be great to see. Federer was not at his best

:05:27. > :05:30.yesterday, either. He won the first set, Tsonga was nowhere, it was a

:05:30. > :05:36.mirror image in the second set, and then Tsonga made some mistakes in

:05:36. > :05:40.the last service game. Double fault, a missed volley. Then he lost the

:05:40. > :05:44.match. Federer is a man of substance, though, and knows how to

:05:44. > :05:50.win matches, so does Nadal. For the sake of the tournament, I was

:05:50. > :05:52.pleased to see them both win even the Fish and Tsonga did well.

:05:52. > :05:56.two great champions came through yesterday and this is the match we

:05:56. > :06:02.are looking forward to now, Andy Murray at the back up against David

:06:02. > :06:07.Ferrer. Andy Murray has won the three matches they have played in

:06:07. > :06:11.2011. Now we get the walk from the locker rooms. This really is

:06:11. > :06:15.showbiz, it is so different from any tournament around the world.

:06:16. > :06:19.certainly is, but the atmosphere is building and they will be looking

:06:19. > :06:24.forward to getting out there. They have had enough time practising,

:06:24. > :06:28.they want to get on the court and get going. The only thing missing

:06:28. > :06:33.from David Ferrer is a hard hat, because he is an absolute grinder,

:06:33. > :06:38.it is a good match to start with for Murray, but he will have to get

:06:38. > :06:48.the patience and aggression sorted out. OK, we are just about to hear

:06:48. > :07:19.

:07:19. > :07:26.Ladies and gentlemen, three-time Grand Slam finalist and winner of

:07:26. > :07:36.five ATP World Tour singles titles in 2011, the British number one and

:07:36. > :08:03.

:08:03. > :08:11.A lovely moment, one she will cherish for a while! The players

:08:11. > :08:14.are on court. This is a magnificent arena for tennis, isn't it? It is

:08:14. > :08:19.incredible to have 17,500 capacity, there is not a bad seed in the

:08:19. > :08:23.house. So much focus on Wimbledon in the summer, and this really

:08:23. > :08:27.fills a gap so that people can get their fill of tennis in the

:08:27. > :08:31.wintertime. It is the third year it has been here at the O2 Arena, I

:08:31. > :08:36.think there are a few more years to go, let's hope it can stay after

:08:36. > :08:39.that. Andy Murray leads this arena, he loves this surface, loves being

:08:40. > :08:45.indoors and played so well last year. There is nothing he likes

:08:45. > :08:50.more than to feel a tennis match is gladiatorial. He spent a lot of

:08:50. > :08:56.time with boxers over the years, and this atmosphere is very much

:08:56. > :09:00.that one on one, one man against another on the stage. It suits him,

:09:01. > :09:06.there are no variables, the lighting is superb, the courts are

:09:06. > :09:11.a nice, even pace. It is ideal for just about everybody. He would

:09:12. > :09:17.rather it was on the red clay but it is not. The only time David

:09:17. > :09:21.Ferrer has beaten Murray is on clay, not on anything else. But Murray

:09:21. > :09:26.has been in awesome form recently as well. He has had a tremendous

:09:26. > :09:32.end to the year. He has had a lot of great wins coming in, the three

:09:32. > :09:38.tournaments in Asia. Whoever wins this point us can choose to serve,

:09:38. > :09:41.they can choose this side, that side, but all of the pressure is on

:09:41. > :09:51.the person flipping the point. David, if you could call heads or

:09:51. > :09:55.

:09:55. > :09:59.tails? Heads. It is a tale. Andy? Receive? Pretty standard for Andy

:09:59. > :10:04.Murray to elect to receive. obviously fancies getting an early

:10:04. > :10:08.break of serve. That is the picture, Andy Murray is

:10:08. > :10:13.keen to get on with it, as you can expect, because the opening matches

:10:13. > :10:18.are always a bit nerve-racking. As we talk about Murray and his record,

:10:18. > :10:26.we look back on it, he has done so well, hasn't he? He has had another

:10:26. > :10:29.great year, two ATP Masters 1,000 Series titles. Shanghai was the

:10:29. > :10:36.third of the three victories that he got in a row in Asia. That is a

:10:36. > :10:40.very strong effort, winning three tournaments in a row. Grand Slam

:10:40. > :10:47.record, or semi-finals, he is a Pat world number three, only 24 years

:10:47. > :10:52.of age. His best years may be now - - he is up at world number three.

:10:52. > :10:56.The trouble is the standard continues to rise. He is ready to

:10:56. > :11:00.achieve great things, I really believe that. The beauty of this

:11:00. > :11:03.tournament for us, but the hard part for the players, is normally

:11:03. > :11:08.in a regular tournament you have a couple of matches before you come

:11:08. > :11:11.up against a senior player. First match out, he is playing world

:11:11. > :11:16.number five, and it emphasises the point that you have to hit the

:11:16. > :11:20.ground running, there is no way to feel your way in, get used to the

:11:20. > :11:24.conditions, the balls, the court. You have to play your best tennis

:11:24. > :11:29.from the word go, and they appreciate that and it will be

:11:29. > :11:32.interesting to see who does that. The warm-up has some time to go,

:11:32. > :11:38.let's hear from Andy Murray a couple of days ago, looking back at

:11:38. > :11:42.his incredible so even. I think it has been my best here, -

:11:42. > :11:48.- his incredible season. Even moving up 1 spot in the rankings,

:11:48. > :11:51.it is good to see that you are making progress. I played well in

:11:51. > :11:55.the majors, still improvements to make, that is what is exciting for

:11:55. > :12:02.me. If I felt it was going backwards, that is when you start

:12:02. > :12:07.to worry, but I have a lot of improving to do. A lot of players

:12:08. > :12:12.this year, especially, have had their best years at 26, 27 years

:12:12. > :12:17.old, so that is a good sign for me that there is still a lot of

:12:17. > :12:21.improving today. Scenario, you get a time machine for Christmas back

:12:21. > :12:25.and taking to an era when a dark, Federer and Djokovic do not exist,

:12:25. > :12:29.so you are a number one, a multiple major champion, but not as good a

:12:29. > :12:34.player because you are not been tested week in, week out. Do you

:12:34. > :12:39.take the trip or stay where you are? I would probably rather stay

:12:39. > :12:45.here. I think it is probably the most competitive era in tennis, I

:12:45. > :12:51.have had the chance to compete against Federer and Nadal, the two

:12:51. > :12:55.best rivals I have ever played, no question, and Djokovic has had,

:12:55. > :13:00.before this year, people would not have been putting him in that

:13:00. > :13:08.bracket. But anything can happen in sport, and he has played an

:13:08. > :13:13.incredible season and it has tested me, made me need to get fitter and

:13:13. > :13:19.stronger and kind of be resilient and keep coming back. I have had a

:13:19. > :13:24.lot of tough losses, big events, but I keep working hard, trying to

:13:24. > :13:27.get much ultimate goals and I am getting closer, and that is what is

:13:27. > :13:33.exciting. But because I have been around those guys it has made me a

:13:33. > :13:38.better tennis player. I have managed to win against each of them

:13:38. > :13:43.many times, and I would like to have some more opportunities in

:13:43. > :13:47.getting the chance against them, which is a privilege. I would hope

:13:47. > :13:56.that most competitors in the situation that I'm in would want to

:13:56. > :13:59.do the same day. Have a fantastic He is in such a tough era, but this

:13:59. > :14:06.is the match today against Davide Ferrere, where Andy Murray holds

:14:06. > :14:15.five wins in -- five wins against three, and he has won the last four

:14:15. > :14:21.against Arab. You wonder how Ferrer can hurt Murray -- the last four

:14:21. > :14:27.against David Farrar. I think coming into this environment, Andy

:14:27. > :14:31.playing at home on a hard court, it points in Murray's favour, but

:14:31. > :14:38.again, actions speak louder than words. Murray has got to come out

:14:38. > :14:47.and play well, and it he does not, you know that Farrow will not give

:14:47. > :14:51.up, he will compete hard -- Davide Ferrere. As far as Murray, I was

:14:52. > :14:56.reading an article by Boris Becker where he was saying his first serve

:14:56. > :15:02.percentage has got to improve, he has to improve his position in on

:15:02. > :15:08.court? All of these things, they are highlighted when they are not

:15:08. > :15:12.working well. When Murray gets the balance right between aggressive

:15:12. > :15:16.from the baseline and still not making unforced errors, that is

:15:16. > :15:20.when he plays well, but those are all dictated by his mentality, his

:15:20. > :15:25.mental approach on the court. When he can be focused on his game plan,

:15:25. > :15:30.the style he needs to play, he is one of the best and can only get

:15:30. > :15:34.better. When, in the Australian Open final, he got distracted after

:15:34. > :15:38.losing the first set to Djokovic, he had that running commentary with

:15:38. > :15:44.his player box, that is when he came unstuck, but if he can

:15:44. > :15:48.maintain that focus then there are bit things ahead. His supporters

:15:48. > :15:53.are all caught sight watching, hoping he will make a good start

:15:53. > :15:59.here at the finals. As far as the serve is concerned, technically it

:15:59. > :16:04.is very good, isn't it? I think a little bit for me is dictated by

:16:04. > :16:08.his ball toss, when it gets too far in front he loses elevation and the

:16:08. > :16:13.margin for error goes down. When he is further back, momentum is going

:16:13. > :16:18.up, that is what you want. You look at someone like Federer, Roddick,

:16:18. > :16:22.great servers, their momentum is going up, they get huge elevation

:16:22. > :16:26.and Murray, when he serves like that, serves comfortably and it

:16:26. > :16:30.puts pressure on his opponent and his return game is probably the

:16:30. > :16:36.best in the world. Sir definitely his serving can dictate a lot of

:16:36. > :16:39.aspects to his game. We see this every year when it comes to a

:16:39. > :16:44.round-robin situation. They are not easy, so different from a

:16:44. > :16:47.tournament when it is win or lose. Very much so, I don't think it

:16:47. > :16:50.necessarily changes your mind set because you are focused on your

:16:50. > :16:55.game plan, you want to win the match, but in the back of your mind,

:16:55. > :16:59.perhaps, if you have a loss in this format you can say, I am still

:16:59. > :17:04.alive, I need to win the next two matches and I can still get to the

:17:04. > :17:08.semi-finals. But you are starting off against another player right at

:17:08. > :17:16.the top of their game and you have got to be ready to gowns. I know it

:17:16. > :17:23.is drawn out, but I am sure Murray is delighted to be facing Davide

:17:23. > :17:29.Ferrere first rather than Berdych? As is a, I think in terms of the

:17:29. > :17:33.best scenario, this is it, it will give him the opportunity to go out

:17:33. > :17:36.there and find his rhythm, but he will know he has to produce a good

:17:36. > :17:43.performer. The warm-up is over, they are about

:17:43. > :17:48.to go out to play, so I will send Tim to the commentary box, Andy is

:17:48. > :17:57.already there. Thank you. It is interesting

:17:57. > :18:02.talking about David Ferrer. He said, you don't get ranked by talent, you

:18:02. > :18:05.get ranked by result. He knows he may not be the best player in the

:18:05. > :18:15.world but he knows how to get the best out of his game and knows he

:18:15. > :18:15.

:18:15. > :19:29.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 73 seconds

:19:29. > :19:39.Davide Ferrere's coach in the middle there. He once locked him in

:19:39. > :19:42.

:19:42. > :19:47.I should explain that! It was a form of discipline, it is the sort

:19:47. > :19:51.of relationship they have got. Ferrer will be the work, he has

:19:51. > :19:56.moulded Ferrer into the world No. 5, a world-class operator of many

:19:56. > :20:00.years. He does not need praise, he says of Ferrer, he just needs a

:20:00. > :20:10.critique, he just wants to get better. He is No. 5 in the world

:20:10. > :20:15.

:20:15. > :20:22.but wants to know how to get to A good opener for the Spanish

:20:22. > :20:26.player, a good settling game, 1-0. He is a worker. You have got

:20:26. > :20:32.somebody like Ferrer down the other end. A few years ago was there

:20:32. > :20:41.another Ferrer type player in your generation? Who was around in your

:20:41. > :20:45.day? He is the typical Spanish player. You talk about success for

:20:45. > :20:52.David Ferrer, and I think that is about maximising your potential.

:20:52. > :20:56.Can I see him breaking into the top four? I just don't see it. Those

:20:56. > :21:00.guys have separated themselves, and Ferrer, I think, is maximising his

:21:00. > :21:06.potential, getting the most out of his game, and perhaps has to wait

:21:06. > :21:16.to see if somebody gets injured. He will have to see whether he will

:21:16. > :21:16.

:21:16. > :22:49.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 73 seconds

:22:49. > :22:54.get an opportunity to get higher You have got to love watching Andy

:22:54. > :22:58.Murray played. He has more changes of spins and directions, more

:22:58. > :23:02.changes of elevation over the net and changes of pace, than anybody

:23:02. > :23:12.else. He really does throw every sort of look at an opponent and it

:23:12. > :23:26.

:23:26. > :23:30.He can certainly break his opponent's rhythm but sometimes

:23:30. > :23:34.when he gets the shot selection wrong he can break his own rhythm.

:23:34. > :23:44.It is a nice problem to have when you have got the assets on the

:23:44. > :23:49.

:23:49. > :23:53.court, you just have to make sure Did that serve finish the game? I

:23:53. > :24:03.think Murray might finish this one is out as well, he is preparing to

:24:03. > :24:25.

:24:25. > :24:30.hit a second serve, but hoping he Poor shot selection, and it? It is,

:24:30. > :24:33.he was on the baseline and the ball is coming through flat and hard.

:24:33. > :24:39.But if Andy Murray wants to play it, then he should, because the

:24:39. > :24:49.opponent never knows what is coming up. It is the right shot if he

:24:49. > :25:08.

:25:08. > :25:18.makes it, the wrong shot if he There was a very interesting

:25:18. > :25:27.

:25:27. > :25:37.article that was re-tweeted about how easy he was to underrate as a

:25:37. > :26:01.

:26:01. > :26:06.tennis player when he first arrived Murray was laying down some rubber

:26:06. > :26:16.on the court here. He was pulled and pushed around but he is just so

:26:16. > :26:23.

:26:23. > :26:28.And this is the essence of the problem for the Spanish player

:26:28. > :26:33.today. That rally, the first rally of this game, was everything that

:26:33. > :26:43.he does and editing that is good enough against everyone else apart

:26:43. > :26:58.

:26:58. > :27:04.from the top four. -- and When you don't have that big weapon

:27:04. > :27:14.of a serve, you cannot give away too many donations and a drop shot

:27:14. > :27:50.

:27:50. > :27:54.on the first point, making life a Murray had the opportunity to come

:27:54. > :27:57.forward in the rally there but I think it is a sign that he does not

:27:57. > :28:07.feel the ground shots of Ferrer so much that he stayed in the rally

:28:07. > :28:07.

:28:07. > :29:05.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 73 seconds

:29:05. > :29:10.and got the unforced error, and now Talking of unforced errors, Murray

:29:10. > :29:20.will be very disappointed making a routine backhand mistake on break

:29:20. > :29:20.

:16:22. > :16:25.I suppose if you look back for signs of any injury to Andy Murray,

:16:25. > :16:29.it was fairly early on in this match, clearly having trouble with

:16:33. > :16:41.strokes as well, particularly when moving to the backhand side. So he

:16:41. > :16:51.is going to get treatment. This could be anything from lower back

:16:51. > :16:53.

:16:53. > :16:57.through hip flexor, hip joint, Well, Federer had to struggle like

:16:57. > :17:04.mad to get past song there, the world number six, in the first

:17:04. > :17:07.match on Sunday afternoon. Against the world No. 8, Mardy Fish, Rafael

:17:07. > :17:11.Nadal had to struggle. Now Andy Murray will have to struggle to get

:17:11. > :17:15.through this match, seemingly physically and mentally as well

:17:15. > :17:22.because it is tough to concentrate if you're in to it -- if you are

:17:22. > :17:26.injured. Probably the last person you want to play in this situation

:17:26. > :17:30.is David Ferrer, because they are having long, physically demanding

:17:35. > :17:41.whether he needs to take more risks, be aggressive, keep the points

:17:41. > :17:47.shorter. That certainly looks like hip treatment that he is getting,

:17:47. > :17:53.whether it is hip flexor will on the lack -- hip flexor on the left

:17:53. > :17:57.leg, but it looks more like the Joint, doesn't it? Everyone is

:17:57. > :18:03.leaving, Tim! A good idea from David Ferrer, instead of sitting on

:18:03. > :18:10.the court he may as well use the time and maybe have a bathroom

:18:10. > :18:18.break. Definitely keep his focus, how he is playing the match, what

:18:18. > :18:26.is working. The trainer would have been aware of this through Andy's

:18:26. > :18:29.personal physiotherapist before the match began. This is not something

:18:29. > :18:39.which is unfamiliar to tennis players, their hips take an

:18:39. > :18:42.

:18:42. > :18:46.absolute battering with all of the rotation. And that will be the

:18:46. > :18:52.battle now, as well as the physical side, to understand the work that

:18:52. > :19:00.he has to do to get back in this match and win two sets straight

:19:00. > :19:08.against the old Jew as a bunny at the other end, David Ferrer. --

:19:08. > :19:12.Duracell bunny. It could serve to focus his game, make him more

:19:12. > :19:15.aggressive, or it could make him more distracted, not able to hit

:19:15. > :19:21.the shots that he wants to, so it will be interesting to see how the

:19:21. > :19:27.early part of the second set unfolds. Most players come into the

:19:27. > :19:32.season-ending championship, we are in the 11th month of the season,

:19:32. > :19:37.most come in with some niggling injuries, things that are not right,

:19:37. > :19:41.and it has been one of the things that Andy has been vociferous about,

:19:41. > :19:45.so has Rafael Nadal. Others less so, like Andy Roddick, but the length

:19:45. > :19:50.of the season, the fact they need more down time. There was a

:19:50. > :19:56.suggestion that if the players were not listen to, then they might

:19:56. > :20:00.discuss strike action, which, on a personal note and as a former

:20:00. > :20:04.member of the ATP Tour player Council, I thought was ridiculous.

:20:04. > :20:08.I don't think there was any real talk of a strike. The players said,

:20:08. > :20:12.we might talk about it if we are not listen to, and it came out in

:20:12. > :20:18.public which was bad PR. I'm sure that was not how they wanted it to

:20:18. > :20:22.come out, but if you look at the way the ATP is structured, 50%

:20:22. > :20:26.tournaments, 50% players and it is right that the players have

:20:26. > :20:30.representation just for themselves. You look at how this unfolded at

:20:30. > :20:35.the US Open, the scheduling is a huge issue and one that certainly
