:00:36. > :00:40.Last night a packed house at the O2 arena. Roger Federer, arguably the

:00:40. > :00:46.greatest player of all time, up against a man who took over as the

:00:46. > :00:50.dominant force in tennis until this year, Rafael Nadal. Over the years,

:00:50. > :00:55.these two great champions have produced many epic matches. Last

:00:55. > :01:05.night was not one of them. Federer was all some while Nadal was

:01:05. > :01:05.

:01:06. > :01:09.was all some while Nadal was ordinary. 6-3, 6-0 was the score.

:01:09. > :01:17.With that victory, Federer has booked his place in the semi-finals

:01:17. > :01:21.and is now the firm favourite to take the title. That was yesterday.

:01:21. > :01:24.The other big story was that Andy Murray was forced to pull out of

:01:24. > :01:30.the tournament because of bad groin injury that hampered in so much in

:01:30. > :01:35.his opening match. That means that Janko Tipsarevic, the world No. 9,

:01:35. > :01:38.comes in today and will take on Tomas Berdych today. Although

:01:39. > :01:42.Tipsarevic is coming in late, he can still qualify for the semi-

:01:42. > :01:48.finals if he wins his two matches. That is what we have to look

:01:48. > :01:51.forward to, but first back to Murray. Let's what he had to say

:01:51. > :01:54.yesterday. Hard luck in pulling out of your

:01:54. > :02:01.final tournament of the year. It must have been a hard decision to

:02:01. > :02:10.take. It is tough. I do not think it is something that any of the

:02:10. > :02:20.players like to do, especially in an event like this. I always try to

:02:20. > :02:21.

:02:21. > :02:28.give it a goal and see how I am feeling. I need more time to rest

:02:29. > :02:32.and recover. I did not have that luxury, so I am disappointed, but,

:02:32. > :02:38.you know, nothing much else I could have done.

:02:38. > :02:44.How long have you been advised to rest for? It is a week to ten days

:02:44. > :02:51.of complete rest, and then, obviously, you would start to build

:02:51. > :02:59.up again. But I did it on Monday, a week before my match. I had scans

:02:59. > :03:02.on the Tuesday. Unfortunately, I did not have a week to rest and do

:03:02. > :03:10.nothing, so I was just trying to do little bits and pieces of training,

:03:10. > :03:20.but nothing that was enough to test it out, test myself but physically

:03:20. > :03:28.

:03:28. > :03:33.As soon as I felt my growing towards the end of the first set

:03:33. > :03:40.against David Ferrer, it just hurt me because I knew I was not going

:03:40. > :03:44.to be able to compete properly and that was why I was so disappointed

:03:44. > :03:53.and felt flat on the court and upset that that is the way that the

:03:53. > :03:56.year's come to an end. It is a horrible thing to pull out of

:03:56. > :04:03.tournaments. You feel like you're kind of letting the people down

:04:03. > :04:07.that you work with, and on top of that, playing in London, you feel

:04:07. > :04:10.that you have let a lot of people down. That is why it takes so long

:04:11. > :04:20.to come to a decision like this. I have spent a long time speaking

:04:21. > :04:22.

:04:22. > :04:24.about it today. And trying to convince myself, but carrying on

:04:24. > :04:30.was never going to be the right thing to do.

:04:30. > :04:35.You have a very short off-season, but it is now crucial for you to

:04:35. > :04:40.prepare as well as you can. Had you aggravated it here it could have

:04:40. > :04:45.been terrible, couldn't it? Little things like that can help you make

:04:45. > :04:49.the decision. The off season has been really important for me in the

:04:49. > :04:53.last three or four years. It is the only time when you can get a lot of

:04:53. > :05:03.physical work done and work on technical things because you have

:05:03. > :05:10.

:05:10. > :05:15.that extra time. If I had played on and hurt myself more I could have

:05:15. > :05:18.done something worse and the off season could have been messed up.

:05:18. > :05:28.We're only six or seven weeks away from the start of the Australian

:05:28. > :05:31.Open as well. SUE BARKER: That means that Janko

:05:31. > :05:35.Tipsarevic is in. He is up against Tomas Berdych. That is what is

:05:35. > :05:42.coming up this afternoon. Let us reflect on the news that Murray is

:05:42. > :05:46.coming out. The we think -- we thought, 10, but that was what was

:05:46. > :05:50.going to happen on Monday. That is why it is so disappointing for him.

:05:50. > :05:53.He has had such a good season and he wanted to finish on a high note

:05:53. > :05:59.in a fantastic event like this. It is bitterly disappointing for him

:05:59. > :06:05.but it is also disappointed for the fans and for us. We wanted to see

:06:05. > :06:09.his progression. From Tipsarevic's point of view, it is an amazing

:06:09. > :06:14.opportunity. He has finished number nine, the best year of his career.

:06:14. > :06:18.Now he has the opportunity of two matches, and he has a great record

:06:18. > :06:25.against Tomas Berdych. He is going to fancy his chances of getting

:06:25. > :06:35.through to the semi-finals. Let's just drop in on the court for

:06:35. > :06:47.

:06:47. > :06:54.They will take a photo and we will carry on chatting. Andy, I think it

:06:54. > :06:58.was the right decision for Murray because he would not be able to

:06:58. > :07:01.compete against the top players like that. He is right to delight.

:07:01. > :07:05.It is a brave decision as well because he knows he is

:07:05. > :07:10.disappointing everyone here. He has commitments that he would like to

:07:10. > :07:14.satisfy, but it is a brave decision because it is the right one. It is

:07:14. > :07:19.just one of those things. What you have to do is manage your schedule.

:07:19. > :07:24.You have to learn how to do that over the years. He is a vastly

:07:24. > :07:29.experienced man out on the circuit but you have to question whether he

:07:29. > :07:34.would have got injured. To go to Asia and Neil Furman tournaments

:07:34. > :07:41.and come back and satisfied the commitment in Switzerland, was that

:07:41. > :07:45.the right thing to do? Or should he have taken some time off? He did

:07:45. > :07:52.admit that yesterday - the fact that he has learned some lessons

:07:52. > :07:55.and he has to rest his body. think, when you reflect on him

:07:55. > :08:00.making his schedule, after the US Open he was probably thinking, I

:08:00. > :08:05.want to go for the No. 3 spot. He probably did not think he was going

:08:05. > :08:13.to go there and when all the tournaments. In hindsight, he has

:08:13. > :08:22.to learn. You see Federer and Nadal, the manager their schedule very

:08:22. > :08:27.well. -- they manage their schedules. It would be

:08:27. > :08:33.disappointing if Federer was able to overtake him as well. When you

:08:33. > :08:40.look at the rankings, Federer, who is looking awesome, could overtake

:08:40. > :08:44.Murray can take that away from them. That is the irony of this situation.

:08:44. > :08:49.He could lose the number three spot because of injury. It is just one

:08:49. > :08:56.of those things. To be honest, they are the top four in the world and

:08:56. > :09:01.they know it. If Federer produces tennis like that again I want to be

:09:01. > :09:05.there to see it. That was incredible last night. He was half

:09:05. > :09:10.volleying, playing with this wonderful freedom. It is like

:09:10. > :09:20.watching anyone who is excellent at anything that they do. I sat there

:09:20. > :09:22.

:09:22. > :09:26.giggling on this offer. It was great to watch. -- on the sofa.

:09:26. > :09:36.can ask if Nadal was at his best, but he was not allowed to be at his

:09:36. > :09:37.

:09:37. > :09:44.best. Federer served a double fault near the start of the match. Then

:09:44. > :09:48.none for the remaining two sets. Given the right conditions, he is

:09:48. > :09:53.still capable of beating anyone. has left so many performances

:09:53. > :09:59.hanging this year, hasn't he? And last year. When you think of the

:09:59. > :10:03.last two a US Opens for Federer, where he has had matches against

:10:03. > :10:08.Djokovic was I think he feels he has not had quite the return and he

:10:08. > :10:18.should have done since he won his last Grand Slam. That is two full

:10:18. > :10:19.

:10:19. > :10:28.years without a Grand Slam. Briefly, on Murray, the off season

:10:28. > :10:33.is so important for him. Very much so. Obviously, he needs to recover

:10:33. > :10:36.from the injury but then you have this one really good window of

:10:36. > :10:40.opportunity where you can do the bulk of your fitness work that will

:10:40. > :10:47.give you that foundation that will, hopefully, see you through it will

:10:47. > :10:54.just after Wimbledon. If you look at what Federer and Nadal did after

:10:54. > :10:56.the US Open, they took a big block then. People think that you finish

:10:56. > :11:04.this season and take your big training block at the end of the

:11:04. > :11:07.year. Four guys to play that well, they have to look at little windows

:11:07. > :11:11.of opportunity within the year. Perhaps after the US Open is a very

:11:11. > :11:14.good time to have a training block that will set you up for the rest

:11:14. > :11:20.of the year and then move into the following year. I think they will

:11:21. > :11:26.all be pleased it is changing next year anyway. Today, we have this

:11:26. > :11:31.match to look forward to. It is going to be a tough one, isn't it?

:11:31. > :11:39.Tipsarevic was ranked 29 at Wimbledon, he is now a number nine.

:11:39. > :11:43.He has gone up 40 places. It is unbelievable. He has been here for

:11:43. > :11:49.ten days preparing. I think it is an advantage for Tomas that he has

:11:49. > :11:55.been on the court already. He has been out there and he has felt the

:11:55. > :12:03.heat of battle and of competition. If anybody likes a big stage it is

:12:03. > :12:07.Janko. He is only 53011 and covered in tattoos. He plays with the same

:12:07. > :12:14.intelligence that he has in his mind. I am looking forward to him

:12:14. > :12:20.trying to get close to Berdych. We will get this match under way in

:12:20. > :12:30.just a moment. Ten-man Andrew are going to the commentary box. Let's

:12:30. > :12:36.

:12:36. > :12:41.I came to London early enough, I was practising every day and

:12:41. > :12:48.preparing, whether I am playing a match the day after. My daily

:12:48. > :12:55.routine and my regime is not going to change much now that I know I am

:12:55. > :12:59.officially one of the top eight. You have two matches to come,

:13:00. > :13:06.Berdych and Djokovic. What are your thoughts? I am aware that I am

:13:06. > :13:12.playing against two really tough opponents. I played Tomas a couple

:13:12. > :13:16.of times this year. I lost and I won. But every time I remember that

:13:16. > :13:21.we played really, really interesting and tough matches. So

:13:21. > :13:28.why am looking forward to that one tomorrow. Regarding Novak, he is

:13:28. > :13:37.probably one of my best friends off of the tennis court. Friendship is

:13:37. > :13:41.set aside for the time on court. Things will hopefully go back to

:13:41. > :13:46.normal after wards. He has had to wait but he will get

:13:46. > :13:50.his chance. Andy was talking about the big stage, not only their

:13:50. > :13:57.grandson's but the David Cups as well, it has been terrific for him.

:13:57. > :14:00.That is right. If you can play in the Davis Cup at home in front of

:14:00. > :14:05.20,000 people then you are safe to play anywhere. We talk about

:14:05. > :14:13.Berdych, I think he probably fancied his chances coming into a

:14:13. > :14:19.match against Murray of who had questions and injuries. Then, all

:14:19. > :14:26.of a sudden, you have someone coming in who is fresh and you have

:14:26. > :14:36.a losing record against him. It depends to his best on the day.

:14:36. > :14:40.

:14:40. > :14:43.certainly has the weapons, Berdych. Absolutely. I think it is a bit of

:14:43. > :14:53.a coin tossed to see who will come out on top here. Thank you very

:14:53. > :14:55.

:14:55. > :14:59.much. Now over to Andy. Thank you. Berdych has an advantage

:14:59. > :15:09.in terms of height. He will be trying to bring his power to bear

:15:09. > :15:09.

:15:09. > :16:32.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 82 seconds

:16:32. > :16:36.So much for my theory that it might take a bit of time for Tipsarevic

:16:36. > :16:40.to play his way into the pace of the court and the arena. I thought

:16:40. > :16:44.it might be an advantage for Berdych to have played a match.

:16:44. > :16:49.sat on the fence in the studio and said that it was a bit of a toss of

:16:49. > :16:59.a coin, but after seeing those first two points, Tipsarevic looks

:16:59. > :17:19.

:17:19. > :17:22.After the tie-break he lost to Djokovic in his first round-robin

:17:22. > :17:27.match, Berdych made some of the worst mistakes he could probably

:17:27. > :17:31.have made in his career. This is a very disappointing start to this

:17:31. > :17:39.one. He has probably had enough of the Serbians. That is mum and dad

:17:39. > :17:42.there. He made a lot of unforced errors in the tie-break against

:17:43. > :17:52.Djokovic and there was no real need to hit the drive volley there, he

:17:53. > :17:59.

:17:59. > :18:09.could have taken his time and let The parents are getting younger

:18:09. > :18:28.

:18:28. > :18:33.these days, as well. Have you What is going on here? Parents are

:18:33. > :18:42.looking younger because you are looking... I know! Every morning I

:18:42. > :18:52.think the same. Is there mobile phone somewhere or something? There

:18:52. > :18:52.

:18:52. > :19:33.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 82 seconds

:19:33. > :19:36.is a bit of a buzz in the arena, 27 years old from Belgrade, part of

:19:36. > :19:46.the winning Davis Cup team last year. What a platform it was for

:19:46. > :19:49.

:19:49. > :19:54.all of them. Tipsarevic and Djokovic have had wonderful years

:19:54. > :20:03.following that. Fantastic national pride. Two Serbians at the season-

:20:03. > :20:13.ending championships. Throw in Nenad Zimonjic at the doubles as

:20:13. > :20:13.

:20:13. > :22:16.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 82 seconds

:22:16. > :22:20.His long-time coach, since his No doubt having Djokovic on board

:22:20. > :22:24.and seeing him achieving is just going to help the whole climate for

:22:24. > :22:32.tennis in the country, for them to win the Davis Cup. I wonder if

:22:32. > :22:42.Djokovic has been around -- if Djokovic had been around these last

:22:42. > :22:42.

:22:42. > :23:33.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 82 seconds

:23:55. > :24:19.

:24:19. > :24:23.the court. There is Nenad Zimonjic, Tomas Berdych is having a bad time

:24:23. > :24:29.here, isn't it? He is certainly having a bad time that a lot of

:24:29. > :24:39.that is to do with Tipsarevic, who has really come out and in -- and

:24:39. > :24:39.

:25:26. > :25:36.other reactive. Tipsarevic is dictating play, moving Berdych side

:25:48. > :25:48.

:25:48. > :26:35.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 82 seconds

:26:35. > :26:45.Really the first disappointing shot for Tipsarevic. He would have liked

:26:45. > :28:14.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 82 seconds

:28:14. > :28:24.0-30 down in this game, Tomas Berdych. It is a must-win game for

:28:24. > :28:49.

:28:49. > :28:57.One thing you can say about the pace of this court is that, even at

:28:57. > :29:07.3-0 down, it is not like being down on a grass court. Slow-medium, I

:29:07. > :29:10.

:29:10. > :29:18.Challenge. UMPIRE: Mr Tipsarevic is

:29:18. > :29:20.challenging the call. ANDREW CASTLE: The lady on the line

:29:20. > :29:29.called it out. UMPIRE: No challenge? Second

:29:29. > :29:33.service. The line judge called it out so

:29:33. > :29:38.Berdych was asked whether he wanted to challenge.

:29:38. > :29:45.UMPIRE: Game, Berdych. ANDREW CASTLE: But if the umpire

:29:45. > :29:49.has called the score, he must have thought it was in? Anyway... 2-1 to

:29:49. > :29:55.Tipsarevic here. He has made a good start even though he did not take

:29:55. > :30:00.his 0-30 opportunity in that game. He is in for Andy Murray Cup -- in

:30:00. > :30:05.for Andy Murray because he is world number nine and therefore was the

:30:05. > :30:11.alternative. He had a very good hard-court summer season and

:30:11. > :30:19.tremendous indoors as well. The final full St Petersburg, lost to

:30:19. > :30:25.Berdych in Paris. He was a quarter- finalist at the US Open. That gave

:30:25. > :30:30.him an awful lot of point and he has risen from 49 to number nine.

:30:30. > :30:40.You can see from the US Open on words, where he made that quarter,

:30:40. > :30:41.

:30:41. > :30:51.he has been consistent and he has He played a fantastic match with

:30:51. > :30:52.

:31:02. > :31:04.

:31:04. > :31:09.10-8. Did you play him? I don't think I did. And I am not sure I

:31:09. > :31:16.would have liked to. He moves well and he is relentless with his

:31:17. > :31:26.hitting. Very solid offer of both wings. Tipsarevic seems to be

:31:27. > :31:52.

:31:52. > :31:55.aiming for the bar ditch -- Berdych It is interesting that Tipsarevic

:31:55. > :31:59.would be going to the Berdych backhand most of the time because

:31:59. > :32:06.his big weapon is his forehand. It is also where he makes most of his

:32:06. > :32:09.errors. It is how you go to an opponent's strength that is the big

:32:09. > :32:19.thing. If you go to it with weakness you will be punished but

:32:19. > :32:46.

:32:46. > :32:56.if you go to it with strength you Was it too long? UMPIRE: Tipsarevic

:32:56. > :33:07.

:33:07. > :33:12.challenge as the call. -- That lady on the line was the one

:33:12. > :33:21.that Serena Williams had a go at at the US Open, and ended up getting

:33:21. > :33:31.into all sorts of trouble. You know that, if she is working here, she

:33:31. > :33:43.

:33:43. > :33:53.Straight back into action. I would never call a service line.

:33:53. > :33:53.

:33:53. > :34:49.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 82 seconds

:34:49. > :34:57.That has to be the hardest thing. The only other person I can

:34:57. > :35:07.remember wearing glasses, two people, in fact, Clement was one of

:35:07. > :35:34.

:35:34. > :35:39.them. He also had a bandana. There UMPIRE: It is very close. I can see

:35:39. > :35:49.the mark. Accepting that this ball was out.

:35:49. > :35:50.

:35:50. > :37:09.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 82 seconds

:37:09. > :37:14.A bit of a Perot wet here, wasn't Highways Berdych going to have an

:37:14. > :37:18.impression on the match? If he is going to continue serving at 25%

:37:18. > :37:27.first serves it is going to be a long afternoon. He has to get a few

:37:27. > :37:37.more first serves and get a few more Kyi points. -- a few more

:37:37. > :38:05.

:38:05. > :38:09.The pattern at that -- the pattern that is developing is that Berdych

:38:09. > :38:18.is getting the power on the ball. Tipsarevic is going to have to

:38:18. > :38:28.avoid getting pushed back too far. If the Serbian is too far back it
