:00:34. > :00:39.London is no stranger to history. Everywhere there are monuments to

:00:39. > :00:42.the past. This scene of the coronation of kings and Queen's,

:00:43. > :00:47.the home of the mother of Parliaments. Today it will witness

:00:48. > :00:54.a little bit of sporting history. Behind this door is a man who is

:00:54. > :00:57.about to play his 100 Korea final. He is looking for his 70th career

:00:57. > :01:02.title and should he achieved that it would be an historic 6 win in

:01:02. > :01:07.this event. Behind this door is a young Frenchman who, if he triumphs,

:01:07. > :01:11.will become the first player from his nation to win this prestigious

:01:11. > :01:15.end-of-season tonight. If you have a feeling of deja-vu today, it is

:01:15. > :01:19.no surprise because this is the third meeting between Roger Federer

:01:19. > :01:25.and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in London this year. Tsonga came from two

:01:25. > :01:31.sets down to beat Federer in a dramatic Wimbledon quarter-final.

:01:31. > :01:36.The upset of the tournament! only last Sunday Roger defeated Jo-

:01:36. > :01:43.Wilfried here at the O2 Arena as he embarked on the quest for that six

:01:43. > :01:48.a Masters crown. Federer is off to a winning start at the O2! So, now,

:01:48. > :01:53.we end as we began, and on this great stage, will it be the ballet

:01:53. > :02:00.of Federer or the jive of Tsonga? Whatever the outcome, history will

:02:00. > :02:04.be made. Good afternoon. That is what we are

:02:04. > :02:08.looking forward to at the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals but before we

:02:08. > :02:12.look ahead to that I would like to say how shocked and deeply saddened

:02:12. > :02:17.all of us here at BBC Sport and a question of sport were to here of

:02:17. > :02:22.the debt of the Welsh manager Gary Speed earlier today. Tim and Andrew

:02:22. > :02:26.are with me, I know that Andrew knew Gary very well, as I did, he

:02:26. > :02:30.was on a question of sport and many occasions, he was a terrific man to

:02:30. > :02:35.work with and our thoughts are with his family and friends at this time.

:02:35. > :02:39.Looking ahead to this match, Federer against Tsonga, it might

:02:39. > :02:44.not be the final everyone thought it would be, but they have been the

:02:44. > :02:48.two players in form since the US Open. Very much so and these are

:02:48. > :02:52.probably the favourite conditions for most players. Federer, his

:02:52. > :02:56.track record speaks for itself, and the way that Tsonga has played and

:02:56. > :03:01.the type of tennis he plays, I think he can make life

:03:01. > :03:05.uncomfortable for Federer. You go back one week to last Sunday, I

:03:05. > :03:11.think Federer was fortunate to come through in the third set. He

:03:11. > :03:15.dominated that dead set, Tsonga was able to reply in the second set --

:03:15. > :03:20.dominated the first set. Tsonga can take Federer out of his comfort

:03:20. > :03:24.zone. Andrew, we talked about Federer yesterday so let's talk

:03:24. > :03:30.about Jo-Wilfried today. He came through a good match yesterday,

:03:30. > :03:33.defeating Tomas Berdych. Yes, and it was comfortable. He had a couple

:03:33. > :03:37.of lapses, but he was not punished in the second set and always looked

:03:37. > :03:43.like he would win. He said in the press conference, we are going to

:03:43. > :03:47.get this done and then go on a massive party. He is looking

:03:47. > :03:51.forward to the end of the season. He has all of the firepower to make

:03:51. > :03:54.the guys ahead of him in the rankings have a nightmare, and that

:03:54. > :03:59.is why this is such an interesting final because he can take the match

:03:59. > :04:03.away from it. He is a great personality, that is what the crowd

:04:03. > :04:10.love, though celebrations. That's hear what he said after the match

:04:10. > :04:16.when he was asked about facing a familiar foe today.

:04:16. > :04:20.Three consecutive Sundays versus Federer. You lost in two sets the

:04:20. > :04:29.first set -- the first Sunday, three sets the second Sunday, what

:04:29. > :04:32.you expect in the third Sunday? expect to win, of course. It is all

:04:32. > :04:41.the time really exciting to play against Roger. It is going to be

:04:41. > :04:48.really special here for my first final here. And it's going to be an

:04:48. > :04:53.amazing atmosphere, I think, at the court, and I'm sure I will respect

:04:53. > :04:58.Roger, but play my best tennis. Will there be part of you, because

:04:58. > :05:05.it is your last match of the year, that will just want to seize the

:05:05. > :05:15.moment, just go for it and see what happens? Anyway, I will give

:05:15. > :05:20.everything. If I have to break my toe to win, I will do it, for sure!

:05:20. > :05:23.I note it's the last match, so I will give it everything and I know

:05:23. > :05:27.right after that it is the party, so it is good.

:05:27. > :05:32.It would be a much happier party if he won today, that is the shot. I

:05:32. > :05:42.say a familiar foe, they have met in the last three Sundays in a row,

:05:42. > :05:42.

:05:42. > :05:49.but have met on 10 occasions so far. This is their 8th meeting of the

:05:49. > :05:54.year. They must know each other's game so well. They obviously know

:05:54. > :05:58.each other's games, but I think the start will be important. When you

:05:58. > :06:02.watched Federer against Ferrer yesterday, Federer got off to a

:06:02. > :06:07.shaky start but you never felt Ferrer had the firepower to trouble

:06:07. > :06:13.him. If Federer gets off to a slow start and Sunday is firing, if he

:06:13. > :06:19.gets an early lead, he could make Federer uncomfortable -- and Tsonga

:06:19. > :06:23.is firing. I think the first half an hour is going to be critical in

:06:23. > :06:27.the outcome of the match. Let's take you back, you were there at

:06:27. > :06:32.Wimbledon and saw this great match, this great comeback from Tsonga at

:06:32. > :06:37.Wimbledon in the quarter-final against Federer. It was unheard of,

:06:37. > :06:41.it was so surprising to see. There was absolutely nothing that Federer

:06:41. > :06:46.could do, he did not look animated at times in the last three sets but

:06:46. > :06:51.stronger only lost one serve in the opening service game -- but Tsonga

:06:51. > :06:57.and only lost one serve. I will say song that has served more aces this

:06:57. > :07:01.year than anybody else, and that is a key shots today. If he keeps

:07:01. > :07:05.Federer off-balance like at Wimbledon we could be looking at

:07:06. > :07:09.tie-breaks all the way. He is an offensive force. It is like he

:07:09. > :07:15.believed in himself after that. We talk about him having great

:07:15. > :07:20.potential and it is still a bit up and down. He has got that French

:07:20. > :07:25.flair, and when he is on he is fantastic. There can be a few

:07:25. > :07:28.lapses in concentration where his form dips a bit, but given the

:07:28. > :07:34.circumstances and the environment of the match, the final match of

:07:34. > :07:38.the year, an unbelievable atmosphere, 17,500 people in here.

:07:38. > :07:44.You know he is going to be very intense on every point and go for

:07:44. > :07:48.it. It is the ideal conditions for him to cause a major upset.

:07:48. > :07:54.mentioned the serve, he has served 31 aces this week. Is that right

:07:54. > :07:58.going to get enough chances? That is up to Tsonga. As Federer said

:07:58. > :08:02.before their first match last Sunday, Tsonga is a man who can win

:08:02. > :08:08.a match by force and there is nothing you can do. His game plan

:08:08. > :08:13.is simple, he has to serve great, get a short ball and move into the

:08:13. > :08:17.net like he has been in the group stages and the semi-final. He has

:08:17. > :08:23.turned himself into this attacking monster on the court and his

:08:23. > :08:27.athletic ability, well, we have seen that. Said the match may not

:08:27. > :08:31.be in Federer's hands. Federer has to keep Tsonga back and it will be

:08:31. > :08:37.interesting to see how he defends on the backhand and read he gets

:08:37. > :08:41.enough depth to keep the Frenchman at the back of the courts. Tsonga

:08:41. > :08:47.has a world ranking of six, and you often can see a dip in form but he

:08:47. > :08:52.cannot afford that today. He cannot, but it is part of his appeal, part

:08:52. > :08:55.of his temperament. There has been talk about him not having a coach,

:08:55. > :09:00.and I think today is a classic example where he does not need a

:09:00. > :09:04.coach. The game plan is simple, he has to go out there, be aggressive,

:09:04. > :09:08.go for his shots, serve a high percentage of first serves and when

:09:08. > :09:13.he has the chance go for his forehand, as Andrew said. If he

:09:13. > :09:16.does that, no doubt he can make life difficult for Federer. Let's

:09:16. > :09:23.take you back to the best tennis this week, which came from the

:09:23. > :09:27.racket of Federer against Nadal. He totally destroyed him. There were a

:09:27. > :09:31.couple of elements to this. Federer was utterly brilliant, it was a

:09:31. > :09:39.celebration of his ability with the racket, his enjoyment and

:09:39. > :09:45.enthusiasm of the sport. Not for him this talk of being stale at the

:09:45. > :09:51.end of the season, he is enjoying himself. This is his surface, but

:09:51. > :09:56.Rafa has to rediscover a passion for the game. He practised on clay

:09:56. > :10:01.today, getting ready for Spain versus Argentina. Rafa was not

:10:01. > :10:05.great, Roger was on the day and the scoreline reflected its. Rafa's

:10:05. > :10:11.face, it is all about passion for him and it is missing from his day

:10:11. > :10:15.him. That is right, he relies on the movement -- it is missing from

:10:15. > :10:20.his game. He looked flat, and when your opponent is playing right that

:10:20. > :10:24.it will make things even worse. It was an incredible performance from

:10:25. > :10:28.Federer, one he has built on to get into the final draw stop from

:10:28. > :10:34.Rafa's point of view, he will be happy it is a red clay court under

:10:34. > :10:38.his feet right now. Federer almost knew he was through the group,

:10:38. > :10:42.because he has not been that dominant since then against Mardy

:10:43. > :10:48.Fish and yesterday against Ferrer. The Mardy Fish match was a good

:10:48. > :10:52.match, he was already going through as champion. The match against

:10:52. > :10:57.Ferrer, he did not played very well. If truth be told, for about three-

:10:57. > :11:00.quarters of the match, the first set particularly, the real

:11:00. > :11:05.difficulty on the backhand. He worked his way through the gearbox

:11:05. > :11:10.and was probably in third or 4th gear towards the end of it. People

:11:10. > :11:15.have to play better than that today, and that is a challenge for him.

:11:15. > :11:18.This is not a foregone conclusion. It is not. We heard from Jo-

:11:18. > :11:23.Wilfried, let's hear now from Roger. This is what he had to say

:11:23. > :11:26.yesterday after his win. On Sunday it will be your 100

:11:26. > :11:36.career final. What an amazing achievement that is.

:11:36. > :11:39.SUE BARKER: But the crowd did not have enough, they went on and on,

:11:39. > :11:49.they wanted to tell Roger what they thought of him.

:11:49. > :12:06.

:12:06. > :12:09.I am not sure I want to say the next bit, but you are going for

:12:09. > :12:15.your six Evert title which would put you out on your own as well.

:12:15. > :12:19.What does that mean to you? I did not think I would reach 100 finals

:12:19. > :12:26.in my career, to be honest. You cannot really plan that. But one

:12:26. > :12:32.thing I can tell his I will not retire after my 100th final.

:12:32. > :12:38.could be here a while! I knew going into this match I could reach my

:12:38. > :12:42.100th final, I could win my 70th final at the same time tomorrow. It

:12:43. > :12:47.is an amazing career I have had, so lucky, I am still standing and

:12:47. > :12:53.still running. I don't know how I do it, 100 finals and still walking

:12:53. > :12:57.normally, but I feel healthy, fit and motivated and to be playing at

:12:58. > :13:03.the highest of levels for so many years and play my 100th final in

:13:03. > :13:08.London means so much Jimmy. One record after another for this

:13:08. > :13:12.great champion -- means so much to me. If he wins today he will go top

:13:13. > :13:16.of this illustrious list. It is an illustrious list. This is an

:13:16. > :13:22.important event at the end of the year. It used to be called the

:13:22. > :13:29.Masters, the players sometimes call it that now, now it is the Barclays

:13:29. > :13:35.ATP World Tour Finals. This is for Champions area. There is one thing

:13:35. > :13:39.I would say, if anybody is looking for any omens or anything, there

:13:39. > :13:45.have been 14 times when someone has lost to someone in a group and then

:13:45. > :13:50.beaten someone in the finals. The person who lost as won eight times

:13:50. > :13:58.compared to six. The last time it happens was when Federer played in

:13:58. > :14:02.2005, he lost to David Nalbandian in the final. A minor factor, but

:14:02. > :14:07.Federer will remember it. But there are a number of players saying, is

:14:07. > :14:11.the format the right one? It is difficult to play someone early in

:14:11. > :14:16.the week and then face them in the fine will. It is, but that is what

:14:16. > :14:21.makes it unique. -- in the final. There are a lot of permutations and

:14:21. > :14:24.if you lose in the round robin you can still go through. You could win

:14:24. > :14:29.two matches and still go out. I think they enjoyed the added

:14:29. > :14:32.opportunity. Tsonga has obviously recovered well from his first lot

:14:32. > :14:36.and has everything to play for today. The atmosphere is building

:14:36. > :14:40.here and it was incredible yesterday when Roger walked on to

:14:40. > :14:44.the court, a standing ovation because he is loved by the crowd.

:14:44. > :14:49.His enjoyment of hitting a tennis ball is what keeps him out there

:14:49. > :14:53.despite everything he has achieved. He just still enjoys actually

:14:53. > :14:58.hitting the tennis ball. How nice is that to see? We have had a lot

:14:58. > :15:04.of whining and moaning, people are injured so it is coming into focus,

:15:04. > :15:07.but these two guys have been the best by far this week. A real shame

:15:07. > :15:14.Murray had to pull out because he could have been involved in this,

:15:14. > :15:18.but we have got the right find will. We have. As far as Roger is

:15:18. > :15:24.concerned -- to write final. As far as Roger is concerned, I think

:15:24. > :15:29.there is a time later in life when he will be looking and be proud.

:15:29. > :15:33.will be proud. Right now, he has to concentrate on his game plan, his

:15:33. > :15:36.strategy, the way he wants to serve and where, and dictate from the

:15:36. > :15:43.baseline. If he does that, everything else will take care of

:15:43. > :15:47.itself. Let's hear from the two players.

:15:47. > :15:55.New admitted yesterday you were nervous, how do you feel today? --

:15:55. > :16:00.You admitted yesterday. I feel good. What do you need to did today to

:16:00. > :16:05.get the win? Be aggressive and play my best tennis because Roger is a

:16:05. > :16:13.very good player, may be the best in the world ever, so I have to

:16:13. > :16:19.play my best tennis. Good luck. SUE BARKER: I was told it was

:16:19. > :16:24.Annabel Croft doing that into the! Her voice has got a bit deeper

:16:24. > :16:28.lately -- that interview. Roger is talking now.

:16:28. > :16:33.You have had a Parade of -- an incredible career, does it get

:16:33. > :16:39.easier? It is still nerve-racking, but a nice feeling because you are

:16:39. > :16:45.playing a good tournament and this is the last push, so I hope I can

:16:45. > :16:50.play a good match. Where will the match be won or lost? It is indoors,

:16:50. > :16:56.so we all have to be aggressive. Good luck.

:16:56. > :17:01.So, the players are on their way, and this is a prestigious event,

:17:01. > :17:07.Tim. We talk about the Grand Slams but this is the next best thing, a

:17:07. > :17:12.major milestone for Jo-Wilfried. Very much so, those of the top 20,

:17:12. > :17:16.25 guys. When you start the year, the world or finals are at the back

:17:16. > :17:21.of your mind. If you can have the results and the big finals, there

:17:21. > :17:24.is a opportunity to qualify. When you talk about the top eight, it

:17:24. > :17:28.really is a select and exclusive groups that make this tournament.

:17:28. > :17:32.Said this is a culmination of a fantastic year and Tsonga will be

:17:32. > :17:37.looking to try to win it for the first time. We said earlier with

:17:37. > :17:44.the Tsonga, he is probably the next two could break this top four day

:17:44. > :17:48.block. You do feel he has the tools in his game -- this top four

:17:48. > :17:56.deadlock. The first half an hour watching him physically is going to

:17:56. > :18:06.be amazing today. MC: Jo-Wilfried Tsonga!

:18:06. > :18:30.

:18:30. > :18:34.MUSIC: "London Calling" by The MC: Ladies and gentlemen, the

:18:34. > :18:41.holder of six in Grand Slam titles, the five-time year end ATP World

:18:41. > :18:46.Tour No. 1, playing today in his 100th World Tour final, the

:18:46. > :18:56.Barclays ATP World Tour Finals defending champion, from

:18:56. > :19:27.

:19:27. > :19:31.MUSIC: "London Calling" by The Another standing ovation for Roger.

:19:31. > :19:35.It is interesting looking around the auditorium, so many hundreds of

:19:35. > :19:44.people went right down to the front to get a picture of him coming on.

:19:44. > :19:50.This is not just an event, it is their chance in London to come and

:19:50. > :19:54.see this. It is 250,000 people watching tennis in Great Britain in

:19:54. > :20:02.November. In the old days we had the National's at Telford. Let me

:20:02. > :20:12.tell you, we did not get 250,000 people up there. 250 x match and

:20:12. > :20:13.

:20:13. > :20:16.that was a good day! -- 250! And we have two more years and after that,

:20:16. > :20:21.I guess an announcement will be made soon, but fingers crossed for

:20:21. > :20:28.London because it is brilliant. This is a fantastic arena for

:20:28. > :20:34.tennis, isn't it? It is amazing. Andrew was talking about how much

:20:34. > :20:37.better -- how much Federer likes to hit tennis balls, I guess he likes

:20:37. > :20:43.to get a reception like that when he comes on the court, pretty

:20:43. > :20:49.impressive! UMPIRE: two weeks ago in Paris, Jo-

:20:49. > :20:55.Wilfried when the coin toss. Last Sunday, Roger won the trying was.

:20:55. > :21:05.This is the decider. Roger, heads or tails -- the Roger won the

:21:05. > :21:11.

:21:11. > :21:21.SUE BARKER: They may have split the coin toss, but Roger won both

:21:21. > :21:21.

:21:21. > :21:27.matches. There have been busy in recent weeks, Jo-Wilfried winning

:21:27. > :21:30.in Paris, Roger has been on a winning streak. They have been able

:21:30. > :21:35.to him built their momentum and have been in great shape physically,

:21:35. > :21:38.so credit to their fitness trainers. Roger obviously have the big break

:21:38. > :21:43.after the US Open which I think was key for him so he had a chance to

:21:43. > :21:48.get away from the game, rest up, and I'm sure that is the reason he

:21:48. > :21:52.has finished so strong. Tsonga has played a lot more after the US Open,

:21:52. > :21:56.he has had great results but I think he has been able to ride the

:21:57. > :22:01.wave of momentum coming in here, and what a great way it would be to

:22:01. > :22:05.finish this year, with the World Tour finals. And as far as this man

:22:05. > :22:09.is concerned, Jo-Wilfried, you talked about how strong he is but

:22:09. > :22:13.he is an incredibly good athlete and it shows if you get a great

:22:13. > :22:18.athlete playing tennis, they have it all. And with the Tour's that he

:22:18. > :22:23.has got, it takes quite a long time to mature and to know how to use

:22:23. > :22:28.your game to best effect. He has been out there few years, he is 26

:22:28. > :22:32.years old, at least two or three of his professional years have been

:22:32. > :22:36.racked with injury and remained his momentum but now his body has

:22:36. > :22:40.strengthened him to his athleticism and he knows how to get a back even

:22:40. > :22:46.if he is not playing great. He is in the middle of the best part of

:22:46. > :22:53.his career, up from 13 to six this year, that match is a career-high

:22:53. > :22:58.ranking -- ranking. He is enjoying himself. What Andrew is saying

:22:58. > :23:03.about the fact he has knuckled down, he is training hard, you almost

:23:03. > :23:07.have to now in tennis. Roger started it, Rafa, the physical

:23:07. > :23:11.attributes, Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray moving on as well. We do is

:23:11. > :23:17.focus, and rightly so, on their defensive skills. Tsonga has got a

:23:17. > :23:21.good game. But what is not focused on is their defensive skills,

:23:21. > :23:25.dictated by athletic ability. The best defender in the game is

:23:25. > :23:30.Djokovic, who manages to be offensive when he is in a defensive

:23:30. > :23:37.position. You look at the weights on the moves, he is so athletic and

:23:37. > :23:43.Danby so dangerous -- the way song that moves, he is so athletic and

:23:43. > :23:51.so dangerous. He has a single handed backhand which has added to

:23:51. > :23:59.his game. Watch out for that today. It may be a big shot, a big point

:24:00. > :24:08.winning shot today. And this man makes it look too easy. He is

:24:08. > :24:14.that?! His timing, his movement, he has a great eye for tennis -- who

:24:14. > :24:18.is that?! You look at his technique and the way he moves, it is

:24:18. > :24:22.textbook. I think that is one of the reasons why he will be able to

:24:22. > :24:27.move on -- play on for a long time because his game does not take that

:24:27. > :24:32.much out of him. Add to that how he trains and the quality of

:24:32. > :24:38.preparation, there is no reason he cannot go on for two, 3, four years.

:24:38. > :24:42.He has not been out of the top two at year end for donkey's years, I

:24:42. > :24:50.think a tears until this year. He feels, joy fully, that he has

:24:50. > :24:55.something to prove still. I still think he can get in the mix into

:24:55. > :24:59.next year and fight his way back up into the top two. Who knows,

:24:59. > :25:03.possibly world No. 1 again. You never know with this match. It is

:25:03. > :25:07.difficult to say what will happen next it, Djokovic has so much to

:25:07. > :25:12.defend next year, will Rafa reignite the passion in his game,

:25:12. > :25:16.will Murray makes the breakthrough? There are so many questions.

:25:16. > :25:19.those top four, they have got nothing to prove but to themselves

:25:19. > :25:25.because they have achieved so much, but they all have different things

:25:25. > :25:29.to work towards. Djokovic, after the year he has had, can he repeat

:25:29. > :25:37.that? It will be incredibly hard because he was so consistent for so

:25:37. > :25:41.long. Nadal has sort of had a Djokovic jinx this year, losing in

:25:41. > :25:46.six major finals to Djokovic, and then you have Federer, who wants to

:25:46. > :25:50.add to 16 Slams. Throw Andy Murray into the occasion, wanting to win

:25:50. > :26:00.his first Slam, it will be fascinating to what. And Roger, at

:26:00. > :26:05.the age of 30, still as keen now, as keen as a ever. -- as keen as

:26:05. > :26:09.ever. And these numbers can be misleading, a lot of people want to

:26:09. > :26:14.write Federer off, saying he is too old, but only a few years ago

:26:14. > :26:20.Agassi was in the final of the US Open at 35, Sampras won the US Open

:26:20. > :26:27.at 30, so I think there are many more titles left in the him.

:26:27. > :26:31.were talking yesterday about Paul who coached you and Federer, we

:26:31. > :26:36.would say it is an easy job but in some ways it is very difficult

:26:36. > :26:40.because Federer expects the best? That is right, we laughed and we

:26:40. > :26:50.say, in all sports, what do the best coaches have? They have the

:26:50. > :26:52.

:26:52. > :26:57.best players. Barmy, he has picked them pretty well! -- except for me.

:26:57. > :27:02.It is getting his game-plan right, you know he has won so many

:27:02. > :27:11.tournaments, so it is very small adjustments, but at think Paul has

:27:11. > :27:18.had a very positive impact to the way that Federer strategy rises his

:27:18. > :27:24.game. He is getting to the net when he has the opportunity more. Paul

:27:24. > :27:30.will know, Roger will Mayer, he cannot afford a slow start like

:27:30. > :27:34.yesterday -- Roger will know. think it was the 10th game Federer

:27:34. > :27:38.was serving for about nine minutes and Ferrer was two points away on a

:27:42. > :27:46.got the first set it would have made life even more difficult for

:27:46. > :27:52.Federer, but as is often the case he found a way to get through that

:27:52. > :27:56.game, broke set and never looked back and that was when his game got

:27:56. > :28:01.better -- broke serve. If he starts in a similar vein, Federer, he

:28:01. > :28:06.could struggle because Tsonga will come out all guns blazing. Everyone

:28:06. > :28:11.is saying Federer is the favourite, is he for you? He is the favoured,
