:00:38. > :00:57.Rafael Nadal. Andy Murray. So powerful. It is like an exhibition
:00:58. > :01:07.match. Oh yes, that is amazing. That is an absolute demonstration. That
:01:08. > :01:22.is a wicked tennis point. Brilliant shot. The hard work has paid off,
:01:23. > :01:29.very comfortable, brilliant performance. That will be that. It
:01:30. > :01:33.is always a superb clash of style and personality, these two played an
:01:34. > :01:37.epic 3-set battle on this Court five years ago, Tim and Andy with me
:01:38. > :01:42.again, a lot has happened in that five years, particular for Rafa.
:01:43. > :01:45.There have been some fantastic achievements but we reflect on the
:01:46. > :01:50.previous ten or 11 months where he has had a real battle with his
:01:51. > :01:53.confidence and he had an open and frank press conference in Miami and
:01:54. > :01:57.he said in the big moments he was so nervous and struggling so much. In
:01:58. > :02:00.the last couple of months, it looks like he has found better form, he
:02:01. > :02:07.played a fantastic first match against Stan Wawrinka, 6-3, 6-2, it
:02:08. > :02:13.will be an interesting matchup against Andy Murray. As they make
:02:14. > :02:17.their way onto the court, Rafa has talked about the quote he gave in
:02:18. > :02:21.Miami where he said he was lost his confidence coming he was being so
:02:22. > :02:27.honest but he said that has really hurt him. You have to have fun when
:02:28. > :02:31.you are out there, he wants to be honest with having fun and with
:02:32. > :02:35.people in the game, he wants to play by instinct again and put the smile
:02:36. > :02:39.back on his face. He knows it is not a crisis, we know what a crisis is
:02:40. > :02:43.over the last few days and he has kept it all in perspective. He is
:02:44. > :02:52.better than number ten in the world and is back up to number five. He
:02:53. > :03:19.has 27 Masters 1000 trophies, from Spain, Rafael Nadal!
:03:20. > :03:26.Ladies and gentlemen, making his seventh appearance at the Barclays
:03:27. > :03:29.ATP World Tour Finals, winner of 35 titles including two grand slam
:03:30. > :04:01.singles crowns, from Great Britain, Andy Murray.
:04:02. > :04:08.The players are out, a great ovation for both players and we look at
:04:09. > :04:14.their head to head, Rafa has the advantage, 11-6 but they have only
:04:15. > :04:18.met once this year, on clay and Andy got his first victory over Rafa, a
:04:19. > :04:25.big win in Madrid. It certainly was, that was on his way to the mink his
:04:26. > :04:30.second clay title back to back, his first title back to back, his first
:04:31. > :04:34.titles five years, the surprise is they have only played five times,
:04:35. > :04:39.being top of the game, you would think they would play more than
:04:40. > :04:43.that. It is an interesting matchup, Rafa is a lefty and playing with so
:04:44. > :04:46.much top-spin, if you are going to compete well against him as a
:04:47. > :04:50.right-hander, you need a good at hand and that is where I think
:04:51. > :04:55.Federer in the past has struggled because there is so much spin on
:04:56. > :04:59.Rafa's forehand Ross court, that is where Murray can have success
:05:00. > :05:03.because he can step in and use his left hand on his two-handed backhand
:05:04. > :05:09.and get on top of the ball. It will be fascinating to see who will
:05:10. > :05:16.dictate the play today. Andy has a great record against lefties? I did
:05:17. > :05:21.not hear you. He has a great record against left-handers, if not Rafa.
:05:22. > :05:26.You think of Federer dealing with the high return on the forehand and
:05:27. > :05:29.all of those victories he was denied because Rafa came along, Novak with
:05:30. > :05:35.his double hander and Andy have worked out what they want to do.
:05:36. > :05:39.They can flatten it out and go to Rafa's strength, his forehand before
:05:40. > :05:44.going to his backhand side, tactically I think that will be
:05:45. > :05:49.interesting to watch today. It is a match that Murray starts as a narrow
:05:50. > :05:54.favourite but who knows what will happen. Great to see Rafa back in
:05:55. > :06:00.form, demolishing Stan Wawrinka in the first match, if a player wins in
:06:01. > :06:10.straight sets, they will be through to the semifinal. Gentlemen, welcome
:06:11. > :06:15.to the O2, we have umpires covering all the lines, Hawk-Eye is
:06:16. > :06:19.operational, it would be helpful if you make your time just clear and
:06:20. > :06:27.quick, preferably a verbal challenge to avoid any doubt and finally we
:06:28. > :06:56.have TV changeovers. Heads or tails? It is tails. Heads.
:06:57. > :07:06.Today it is the Nastase group in action and we are looking forward to
:07:07. > :07:09.this one, Murray against Nadal, Stan Wawrinka this afternoon against
:07:10. > :07:13.David Ferrer, they both lost their opening matches in straight sets so
:07:14. > :07:19.that is an elimination match, the second one on tonight. If Murray or
:07:20. > :07:23.Nadal win in straight sets, they will go through and join Roger
:07:24. > :07:26.Federer, Djokovic has not been beaten indoors for three years but
:07:27. > :07:32.we saw last night that all records are there to be and Federer did
:07:33. > :07:38.that. He finished it off in style. He said he got lucky with a top-spin
:07:39. > :07:43.forehand down the line but that is magnificent, he has volleyed a great
:07:44. > :07:47.deal more under Stefan Edberg, keeping the points short when he
:07:48. > :07:52.can, that was just a gorgeous shot last night, I replayed that at home.
:07:53. > :07:55.It is just a beautiful thing to watch him play well and he knows
:07:56. > :07:59.full well that he can play Djokovic again later in the week and he knows
:08:00. > :08:04.Djokovic can play a lot better than that but it was turning back the
:08:05. > :08:08.clock again, just what Roger once, moments and tournaments like this.
:08:09. > :08:13.So many Federer fans, it feels like a home tie for him, he takes on Kei
:08:14. > :08:19.Nishikori tomorrow, that is the match tomorrow afternoon on BBC Two
:08:20. > :08:22.at 2pm and then Djokovic against Berdych, all four players, the other
:08:23. > :08:28.three players all have a chance statistically of going through. I
:08:29. > :08:33.have some sort of idea, if Nishikori beats Federer, he then needs Berdych
:08:34. > :08:38.to beat Djokovic and then if Federer wins and Berdych beats docker vitch
:08:39. > :08:43.in straight sets, Federer and Berdych go through. It is
:08:44. > :08:48.complicated. How many years have we done this? It never gets easier, let
:08:49. > :08:54.other people worry about the maths, we talked a little bit about Rafa
:08:55. > :08:59.and how his confidence was down. But there are signs in the past two
:09:00. > :09:03.months that he is getting back, belief is so important. They talk
:09:04. > :09:05.about the physical side but the belief and confidence to win the big
:09:06. > :09:10.point is the difference between a good player and a great one. The
:09:11. > :09:15.ironic thing, with the mental side of things, when Rafa's confidence
:09:16. > :09:19.went down, it affected so many aspects of his game, he was not as
:09:20. > :09:22.aggressive on the forehand and it dropped a bit shorter and so his
:09:23. > :09:27.opponent could be more aggressive and make Rafa do the running. When
:09:28. > :09:31.you are playing with more pressure, it affects your movement, you do not
:09:32. > :09:35.feel as free or as fast, it is sort of a snowball effect that he is
:09:36. > :09:39.going the wrong way but I am delighted to hear how he spoke about
:09:40. > :09:43.the passion and how he wants to get back to playing at an exceptionally
:09:44. > :09:47.high level and he has started to do that. Irrespective of what happens
:09:48. > :09:53.at this tournament, we can expect big things in 2016. Let us hear
:09:54. > :09:58.about how he's getting that passion back for tennis because he spoke
:09:59. > :10:01.yesterday. I am enjoying my tennis more than a couple of months ago
:10:02. > :10:11.because I feel more relaxed on court. That is the most important
:10:12. > :10:18.thing that I needed to fix. Fix it, go on court and play and see what I
:10:19. > :10:21.can do to compete against an opponent. A lot of moments in the
:10:22. > :10:27.season I was thinking about what I had to do to play OK, not thinking
:10:28. > :10:31.what I had to do to beat the opponent and now it is different. I
:10:32. > :10:37.worked on my game. Is your hunger for success your appetite for the
:10:38. > :10:41.sport, as strong as always was? You know a little bit, when you come
:10:42. > :10:44.back from know a little bit, when you come
:10:45. > :10:53.motivation to be back to your best is very hard. I do not know if I
:10:54. > :11:02.will make that happen but my motivation and my passion for what I
:11:03. > :11:09.am doing is 100% and I have the motivation to really keep going and
:11:10. > :11:14.end this season on a high level. He certainly has that, the hunger. We
:11:15. > :11:18.will ask on social media, do you think he will win another Grand
:11:19. > :11:24.Slam? Many times over the last few years, the body has let him down. He
:11:25. > :11:27.has. You lose rhythm and belief, he is the kind of guy who needs a lot
:11:28. > :11:32.of matches to feel comfortable on court. I never thought I would see
:11:33. > :11:36.Nadal lose confidence, especially on the big points but that happened
:11:37. > :11:40.this year. He is human after all, is he going to win another slam, a good
:11:41. > :11:47.question, his record dropped to 70 wins and two losses at the French
:11:48. > :11:54.Open over his career by losing to Novak Djokovic. 70-2, I suspect he
:11:55. > :12:00.will win a 10th French. That is the thing, once he gets the confidence
:12:01. > :12:04.back on the clay courts, he could be unbeatable again. Very much so, hard
:12:05. > :12:07.courts will always be more of a challenge but the way he moves and
:12:08. > :12:11.the technique he has on the shots with so much spin and power, that
:12:12. > :12:16.will always be effective on a clay court. They have been such happy
:12:17. > :12:20.hunting grounds for him, as Andrew said, he can win another French
:12:21. > :12:27.Open, that is for sure. As for this match, Andy Murray beat David Ferrer
:12:28. > :12:31.in straight sets and looked good in that match. He did, the last six
:12:32. > :12:35.games were very impressive, the early part of the match was a bit in
:12:36. > :12:39.and out, his concentration came and went a bit but when he got that
:12:40. > :12:46.controlled aggression from 3-1 down in the second set to win it am a
:12:47. > :12:49.those are good signs. It is or is a tough matchup against Rafa but he
:12:50. > :12:53.does have a good record against lefties and his favourite server is
:12:54. > :13:00.out wide and slow, the other is going into Rafa's weaker side, when
:13:01. > :13:06.Murray goes to the forehand, he has to go there with strength and make
:13:07. > :13:10.sure that he does not give Rafa an opportunity to play his best shot
:13:11. > :13:14.and make Rafa beat him with his backhand. You talk about
:13:15. > :13:19.motivation, Andy Murray, a win would secure the number two spot in the
:13:20. > :13:22.world rankings and that is a big achievement and mix the difference
:13:23. > :13:27.for the seedings for the Australian Open. He would not be in Djokovic's
:13:28. > :13:32.ha. He has never finished as high as number two in the year and rankings
:13:33. > :13:37.so there are many things to play for and a by-product of that is the
:13:38. > :13:42.second seed at the Australian Open so fingers crossed. It has been a
:13:43. > :13:45.really good year for him, you always judged by Grand Slam victories but
:13:46. > :13:49.when you look at what he has done, particularly in the Davis Cup as
:13:50. > :13:53.well, he has had an outstanding year. It has been absolutely
:13:54. > :13:59.outstanding, you reflect back to this event 12 months ago when he
:14:00. > :14:03.lost 6-1, 6-02 Roger Federer and there were huge questions about his
:14:04. > :14:07.game and the style he was playing, was his back 100% and the
:14:08. > :14:11.relationship with Amelie Mauresmo but he has bounced back in brilliant
:14:12. > :14:14.style. He started off in Australia playing the final playing extremely
:14:15. > :14:17.well and he built on that for the Davis Cup and it has been an
:14:18. > :14:22.incredible achievement and hopefully they can finish it off in Belgium.
:14:23. > :14:30.That is the Davis Cup final which you can see live on the BBC. We will
:14:31. > :14:33.ask a question about Rafa and whether he can win another Grand
:14:34. > :14:36.Slam. Get in touch with us at hashtag BBC tennis or via our
:14:37. > :14:40.Facebook page. Many ways to get in touch and we love to hear from you.
:14:41. > :14:46.Tim is on his way and Andrew Castle is already in the commentary box, it
:14:47. > :14:53.is all yours. COMMENTATOR: I reckon they have turned the volume up here
:14:54. > :14:57.in the O2, 17,000 plus in the house. The sound system really booming out,
:14:58. > :15:01.they do just about every form of entertainment it, one of the most
:15:02. > :15:07.successful venues in the world, Madonna will be here soon. Some big
:15:08. > :15:11.bands to look forward to but I do not think it gets much better than
:15:12. > :15:16.watching Rafael Nadal play. The same can be said of Andy Murray. World
:15:17. > :15:25.number two plays the world number five in a group match. Best of three
:15:26. > :15:31.sets. Both winners in their first matches and another chance to assess
:15:32. > :15:33.the form of one of the all-time greats as he regains his joy for the
:15:34. > :16:19.game of tennis. 0-0. 15 drop shots against David Ferrer
:16:20. > :16:25.the other day, Andy Murray. He likes to mix it up, he talks about the
:16:26. > :16:27.importance of speed and says it is a little bit quicker than Paris on
:16:28. > :17:04.this court than a couple of weeks ago.
:17:05. > :17:09.It was a driven backhand from Andy Murray on Nadal's forehand side but
:17:10. > :18:01.it was on the line. If you are struggling a little bit
:18:02. > :18:07.with your confidence, there will always be more nervous tension at
:18:08. > :18:44.the start of a match. That is a rogues gallery, look at that.
:18:45. > :18:49.Struggling with a little bit of confidence can create a bit of
:18:50. > :18:55.nervous tension, particularly at the beginning of a match. Rafa making a
:18:56. > :18:57.couple of unforced errors, this is a good opportunity for Murray to stamp
:18:58. > :19:33.his authority. And that is the end of that. A quick
:19:34. > :19:44.break to Andy Murray in this clash of champions this afternoon. Great
:19:45. > :19:48.stuff. It used to be with Roger Federer trying to get that ball down
:19:49. > :19:54.to the Rafa forehand, the heavy top-spin forehand and could not get
:19:55. > :19:58.it down or control it with the racket either, really struggled on
:19:59. > :20:03.that side, these boys came along, Murray and Djokovic with a double
:20:04. > :20:08.handed backhand and their physicality and they can cope now
:20:09. > :20:13.with Nadal. The game has moved on in five, six, seven years. The game has
:20:14. > :20:18.moved on but when you look at Rafa's game now, he is not hitting
:20:19. > :20:26.it quite as hard or as much spin or as close to the line so it is a
:20:27. > :20:32.slightly easier proposition. In years gone by when you got into
:20:33. > :20:35.baseline exchanges, you felt that Rafa was managing proceedings but
:20:36. > :20:41.you saw in that first game it was Murray's choice how the points were
:20:42. > :20:43.played. And on this surface, a platter, hard ball is that much more
:20:44. > :22:09.effective. That is Murray's bread and butter
:22:10. > :22:15.served, the down the middle on the ad side of the box, particularly to
:22:16. > :22:17.Rafa's two-handed backhand, it is also important member to serve and
:22:18. > :23:11.volley occasionally to Nadal guessing.
:23:12. > :23:56.That was a bit of a wild one, wasn't it?
:23:57. > :25:03.Mr Murray is challenging the call on the baseline, it was called out.
:25:04. > :25:07.Went for the change of direction Andy Murray and he finds the net, it
:25:08. > :25:20.is a break of serve will a couple of uncharacteristic errors
:25:21. > :25:27.from Andy Murray in that game as he tried to consolidate the game he
:25:28. > :25:34.achieved in Game one. It already feels physical, doesn't it? A big
:25:35. > :25:38.rally to open up that game a sign of Nadal's intent, 25 shots. Not a
:25:39. > :25:41.first serve made in his first service game Nadal he needs to find
:25:42. > :25:58.his rhythm on the delivery. Mr Nadal is challenging the call on
:25:59. > :26:07.the service line. The ball was called out. Murray just making the
:26:08. > :26:11.point, how long will he take? As it catches the outside edge of the line
:26:12. > :26:22.which Murray suspected no doubt. Just making a point to the umpire in
:26:23. > :26:23.the chair. Rafa takes his time with everything, between points and
:26:24. > :27:02.challenges. Murray is being really talkative at
:27:03. > :27:06.them and, a sign of nerves? Did not look nervous when he broke serve in
:27:07. > :27:09.the first game, probably more frustration, being up a game and
:27:10. > :27:36.30-15. Have a look where this forehand
:27:37. > :27:40.lands. That is a ball that Murray has got to step into. 89 mph and so
:27:41. > :28:02.easy as well. Murray was right to pull his trigger
:28:03. > :28:08.on a backhand in the last rally but that one he was not quite in
:28:09. > :28:09.position and would not be the right position and accelerate that, you
:28:10. > :28:22.will not be in the right position. That is page one of the Nadal
:28:23. > :28:30.playbook, a first serve and despatching the short forehand.
:28:31. > :28:35.Murray is still talking to his camp over there, he is definitely
:28:36. > :28:38.agitated at the moment and he is not afraid to say to the umpire about
:28:39. > :28:42.how long he took to challenge and between points, it is part of the
:28:43. > :28:48.contest out there in establishing territory at the beginning of a
:28:49. > :28:52.match. When you talk about Murray being agitated, we have been in the
:28:53. > :29:01.match 12 minutes and played three games. You are right but what I am
:29:02. > :29:06.saying is, why? It is unnecessary because it is not doing himself any
:29:07. > :29:11.favours, he was up a break and 30-15 on his serve and he has lost seven
:29:12. > :29:16.of the next eight points and when he is distracted and has this dialogue
:29:17. > :29:19.going back and forth from the box he is not concentrating on the next
:29:20. > :29:25.point and when you play one of the greats of the games, you have to
:29:26. > :29:33.have 100% focus every point. Rafa, his achievements are fabulous, what
:29:34. > :29:37.a generation. Was he taking a little trim there. Who was it the other day
:29:38. > :29:45.had a cup of Coffey out there, Stan Wawrinka. He has taken quite a lot
:29:46. > :29:51.off there. Cutting his own hair on court. Always looking at ways to
:29:52. > :33:18.save costs. The vibration damper has fallen out.
:33:19. > :33:26.Definitely speeding up and flattening out the forehand.
:33:27. > :33:44.Against Ferrer he talked about playing himself in. I don't think he
:33:45. > :33:51.felt under threat against Ferrer at any point. This is a very different
:33:52. > :33:52.match for him. He certainly needs to make sure he is proactive in the
:33:53. > :34:32.rallies. We talk about the offensive skills
:34:33. > :34:36.of these players but I think it is the defensive ones that separate the
:34:37. > :34:39.best players and Murray's backhand was the defining factor of that
:34:40. > :36:05.point. Has not found his first serve read
:36:06. > :36:12.them yet. Rafael Nadal, just five first serves in out of 13 attempts.
:36:13. > :37:15.Under pressure from the back of the court.
:37:16. > :37:24.Big change of direction in that rally for Nadal. He had the guts to
:37:25. > :37:35.go on the offensive with that two hander.
:37:36. > :38:52.Certainly pretty warm out there with the amount that Nadal is perspiring.
:38:53. > :39:05.An intense start. We are settling in nicely here for a spectacular
:39:06. > :39:10.afternoon. Rafael Nadal went down to number ten in the world earlier this
:39:11. > :39:16.year. He is back up to number five. This is his record. It is just
:39:17. > :39:27.amazing. Nine titles in the French Open. Just two defeat there. He has
:39:28. > :39:37.won absolutely everything, including the Olympic gold medal, the Davis
:39:38. > :39:41.Cup in Seville as a 17-year-old. 27,000 people, as far as I remember.
:39:42. > :39:50.He has never won the World Tour Finals. That is the record. 27
:39:51. > :40:03.titles in the Masters. I think he's got a legitimate point
:40:04. > :40:13.when he talks about this being on clay. There is no chance of it being
:40:14. > :40:14.on clay in London. That is the great man. The sport has been lucky to
:40:15. > :40:20.have him. He's got a tennis academy that he's
:40:21. > :40:29.starting. There were times this year when
:40:30. > :40:33.people were talking about the possibility of him not being at the
:40:34. > :40:39.top of the game for too much longer. I think those thoughts are
:40:40. > :40:42.disappearing. That was probably the same people who said Roger Federer
:40:43. > :41:57.should retire about three years ago. That's right.
:41:58. > :42:10.Just helped by the net cord. What is he saying to the umpire? Murray was
:42:11. > :42:15.complaining about Nadal taking too much time, the umpire said the court
:42:16. > :42:20.needs to be dry because of how much he is sweating. I think Andy Murray
:42:21. > :42:21.was asking rather sarcastically whether he could have the court
:42:22. > :43:08.dried. Good to see his dad here. Captain
:43:09. > :43:10.Leon Smith from the Davis Cup as well. I wonder if he will pick him
:43:11. > :43:25.next week. Concentration is not where it should
:43:26. > :43:33.be. You cannot help but think, how deep does Andy Murray want to dig
:43:34. > :43:36.this week? How much do you want to win five matches ahead of the Davis
:43:37. > :43:44.Cup final? It is not ideal. As demanding on the concentration as
:43:45. > :45:43.anything. He has got down to a game point up.
:45:44. > :46:35.The players have been to the net nine times so far.
:46:36. > :46:43.Take your time, get a warning. The scrum told by the amount of time
:46:44. > :47:28.rather than a Dallas taking. This is what happens at a live
:47:29. > :47:29.event. He is very cross, he is getting the runaround here, and it
:47:30. > :48:01.is a break point to Nadal again. Masseuse, captain, dad, website
:48:02. > :49:00.organiser... It is a big business. There is the difference between
:49:01. > :49:03.Nadal now and Nadal before. He will hate that he misses those shots with
:49:04. > :49:35.an opponent struggling with concentration.
:49:36. > :50:11.Can guarantee finishing in the highest position ever. If he wins
:50:12. > :50:13.this match. Very likely to finish this excellent year with the highest
:50:14. > :51:45.ranking ever. The first and the third point,
:51:46. > :51:50.controlled aggression. Irrespective of whether Murray wins or loses the
:51:51. > :52:14.point, that is the way he can construct it.
:52:15. > :52:21.Instead of saying, good first serve, focus on the next point, you
:52:22. > :54:40.still hear this dialogue going back and forth to the box.
:54:41. > :54:46.It is great hitting from Rafael Nadal, absolutely exploding on the
:54:47. > :54:53.forehand side. There is uncle Toni, has been his coach ever since day
:54:54. > :55:00.one. Did not have any sort of knee jerk reaction when the form dropped,
:55:01. > :55:07.stayed loyal to family. Baseline rallies, when they go over nine
:55:08. > :55:35.shots, being won by an adult. -- I Ferrer. -- being won by Nadal.
:55:36. > :55:51.New balls, please. On the women's tour, the coach can come on and have
:55:52. > :55:56.a word with their player. The men opted not to go with that. No help
:55:57. > :56:01.from the outside. We all know that a little bit of communication comes in
:56:02. > :56:06.from the outside. Would anybody be able to say anything to Andy in that
:56:07. > :56:09.situation? He has always been somebody who has had a word with
:56:10. > :56:14.people and he expresses his frustration. We talk about it
:56:15. > :56:17.because it hurts his game. That is right. When you talk about
:56:18. > :56:21.communication and you say there should not be any communication
:56:22. > :56:24.coming from the outside into the court, I am not sure there is much
:56:25. > :56:28.communication coming that way but there is a lot of communication
:56:29. > :56:34.going from Murray back to his camp, and it does not do him any favours.
:56:35. > :56:38.When he construct the point, hit the ball, stepped in with clarity and
:56:39. > :56:42.dictates, key plays his best tennis, and when he does not, when he loses
:56:43. > :56:47.his focus and starts complaining, that is when he makes life difficult
:56:48. > :56:53.for himself. Is some of this to do with the fact of what is coming next
:56:54. > :56:58.week? It is huge. It is huge, he has played in huge events most of his
:56:59. > :57:01.career. Whether it is Wimbledon or the World Tour Finals or the Davis
:57:02. > :57:12.Cup finals, he has always played every match to win it with 100%
:57:13. > :57:16.effort. This is no different. If a court went on the court to have a
:57:17. > :57:20.conversation with him, the coach is not going to tell him anything he
:57:21. > :57:23.has not heard before -- if a coach went on the court.
:57:24. > :57:29.has not heard before -- if a coach his mind back on the next point and
:57:30. > :57:30.once that has been played he needs to concentrate on the point after.
:57:31. > :59:14.Simple as that. Both players felt that was over the
:59:15. > :00:05.top of the net. Will not help Andy Murray's state of mind.
:00:06. > :00:23.Another example of small margins in tennis matches.
:00:24. > :00:43.It is a way, played the point so well, excellent construction. A
:00:44. > :00:45.pretty decent lob from Nadal to push Murray into a difficult overhead, a
:00:46. > :01:15.couple of break points here. Rafa, checking the court, the ball
:01:16. > :01:59.does leave a bit of a mark. Nadal just trying to keep the ball
:02:00. > :02:03.on the length on the forehand side, just overdoing it, managed to get
:02:04. > :02:07.out of the way of the second serve on the return. Two break points
:02:08. > :03:05.saved by Murray. He has faced a crisis in this set,
:03:06. > :03:09.he has really knuckled down, hasn't he? Happy to go to Nadal's forehand
:03:10. > :03:56.hard and flat. Four straight points, Murray Dixon
:03:57. > :04:02.self out of the hole, it is for-4. I tell you what, concentration in or
:04:03. > :04:07.out but he has been up against it and produced. An excellent set of
:04:08. > :04:11.tennis, almost 50 minutes played, a round robin match in the
:04:12. > :04:21.season-ending finale of the ATP Tour. Nadal unable to be here last
:04:22. > :08:19.year, to have his appendix out. So good to have him back.
:08:20. > :08:27.It is long, this time a clenched fist from Rafa Nadal at the end of
:08:28. > :08:36.the game, a nice hold. Recent finals for Nadal in Beijing and Basel,
:08:37. > :08:39.losing to Djokovic and Federer, that will have helped his confidence as
:08:40. > :08:45.we talked about but he has gone a whole year without beating
:08:46. > :08:48.Djokovic, Federer or Murray. You would not have picked that at any
:08:49. > :08:52.time, even recovering from appendicitis, this is an important
:08:53. > :08:59.match for him, he would love to finish the year with some success
:09:00. > :09:03.and build a bad form for 2016. Exactly that, it is a great
:09:04. > :09:07.achievement to qualify for this year and championship but Rafa already
:09:08. > :09:12.has his mind on the beginning of 2016 to hit the ground running and
:09:13. > :09:16.this is about momentum as well. Certainly the way he is playing, his
:09:17. > :09:22.game is moving in the right direction again. Murray saving a
:09:23. > :09:26.couple of break points in his previous service game, Nadal would
:09:27. > :09:31.have served for that first set so this is a really tight match. And
:09:32. > :09:35.they will have noted what happened in the other group last night, Roger
:09:36. > :09:42.Federer defeating Novak Djokovic, the first time in three-year is, 38
:09:43. > :09:47.matches, that Djokovic has lost indoors. Federer in great form,
:09:48. > :09:52.winning this on six occasions, Novak going for four in a row. A superbly
:09:53. > :10:02.staged event at the O2 and we will be here until 2018 with this event
:10:03. > :10:04.at this time of the year. We are really coming down to the nub of
:10:05. > :10:22.this first set, 4-5. Somewhat surprised to see Murray has
:10:23. > :10:24.not used the serve and volley a little bit of a change-up, just a
:10:25. > :11:45.variation. Mr Murray challenging the call on
:11:46. > :11:54.the baseline, the ball was called out.
:11:55. > :12:11.first serve percentage down at 48%. Really need to find it now, this
:12:12. > :12:47.first serve. What a pleasing piece of matchplay
:12:48. > :12:51.from Rafa Nadal, absolutely going for it, three or four months ago he
:12:52. > :12:53.was pushing those back into play and hoping, he absolutely went after
:12:54. > :13:37.that second serve. Three set points. It is a break to love and it is the
:13:38. > :13:42.first set to Rafa Nadal. You cannot say it was against the run of play,
:13:43. > :13:47.he deserved that, 6-4. Murray will have to come back from a set down in
:13:48. > :13:52.this clash of the Titans here. He will have to dig deep in this match
:13:53. > :13:59.and his final group match and then next week we cannot wait for this.
:14:00. > :14:08.In 2004, Rafa won it for the first time. That moment was so special.
:14:09. > :14:14.Novak winning it in 2010. It gives you incentive and motivation. Last
:14:15. > :14:22.year, Roger won it. Definitely one of the big parts of my life as a
:14:23. > :14:26.tennis player. So did Stan. It was a dream. Can Andy and company follow
:14:27. > :14:34.suit, the Davis Cup final, Belgium against Great Britain from next
:14:35. > :14:37.Friday. Looking forward to that, such a big week and pressure on Andy
:14:38. > :14:41.Murray particularly but also on Jamie Murray in the doubles but they
:14:42. > :14:46.have done so well to get through to the final and you will be able to
:14:47. > :14:50.see that next week. Also coming up on radio five live tomorrow at
:14:51. > :14:55.8:30pm, the Wilderness years about the Davis Cup, you can hear from
:14:56. > :14:58.Andy Murray, John Lloyd and Tim Henman about the years that Great
:14:59. > :15:05.Britain have struggled in the Davis Cup and the struggles they have had.
:15:06. > :15:08.Right back to today and the preparation Andy has had, switching
:15:09. > :15:13.from clay to the hard court in the last week has maybe been playing on
:15:14. > :15:17.his mind and we talk about the immense pressure and he has said how
:15:18. > :15:21.much he wants to win this Davis Cup for Great Britain, immense pressure
:15:22. > :15:26.on his shoulders but he has to find a way to win, he is one of the great
:15:27. > :15:32.competitors but up against an inspired Rafael Nadal today, great
:15:33. > :15:37.match and super tennis as well. COMMENTATOR: It is an intense battle
:15:38. > :15:43.between these men, looking at their head to head, 21 times, Nadal
:15:44. > :15:51.winning 15 of those contests, losing six. Murray has won six times, in
:15:52. > :15:56.the Grand Slam championship, it is 7-2 in Nadal's favour. Earlier this
:15:57. > :16:06.year, Murray inflicted a heavy defeat on Spain, on clay in Madrid
:16:07. > :16:11.against his opponent here. Has to come back from a set down now. Any
:16:12. > :16:17.tactical changes you would call for here? I do not think there is
:16:18. > :16:21.anything wrong with the tactic Murray tried to implement, nothing
:16:22. > :16:24.wrong with his game or physically, he just has to focus is mined and
:16:25. > :16:31.cut out all the distractions away from the side of the court and focus
:16:32. > :16:34.on each point. If you looks to dictate, stay in the rally and hit
:16:35. > :16:37.the back and down the line when he gets the chance and play strong to
:16:38. > :16:39.the forehand and then he can turn this match around. If he continues
:16:40. > :17:20.to be distracted Rafa is too good. Was not happy with his second serve
:17:21. > :17:25.returns against David Ferrer the other day, he was quick to say so.
:17:26. > :17:30.Just having a little go at himself again there, Murray, about the
:17:31. > :17:32.length of the second serve returns. But of the court with nothing on it,
:17:33. > :18:21.did not come out of the middle. Is the mumbling going to Jonas
:18:22. > :18:30.Bjorkman. It is irrelevant who it is going to. Not if he is employing
:18:31. > :18:59.you. But then he is not focused on the job in hand.
:19:00. > :19:15.That is a tough point. Working last week from the back of the court with
:19:16. > :19:18.Ross Hutchins who just had the half court with Ross Hutchins who just
:19:19. > :19:23.had the hard court to defend but getting the heart rate over 180 and
:19:24. > :19:25.maintaining technique. Just the sort of rally where you see the work that
:19:26. > :20:07.they have done in the rally. " Should be doing that all day."
:20:08. > :20:13.Listen, you are paying, let us do it all day. It is a relevant but he is
:20:14. > :20:19.paying his coach for his trainer or anything, he is the one in control
:20:20. > :20:30.so if he is saying to do it all day then do it all day.
:20:31. > :20:37.Just one of those days for him at the moment, he is still in this
:20:38. > :20:42.match and striking the ball well and as fit as he has ever been, no
:20:43. > :20:45.problems with the back, reckons he has got
:20:46. > :20:58.problems with the back, reckons he for the Davis Cup next week.
:20:59. > :21:05.Would not be the first player to come off and the little bit
:21:06. > :21:08.embarrassed about the way things have
:21:09. > :21:12.embarrassed about the way things concentration is not the, that is
:21:13. > :21:16.the trouble with tennis, you are out there alone, no one to rely on. That
:21:17. > :21:23.is why we talk about the three elements of the game, technical,
:21:24. > :21:26.physical and mental. And right now, Murray has the technical and the
:21:27. > :21:32.physical but the mental side of things is letting him down. Nadal is
:21:33. > :21:43.taking advantage of it. And he is too good to be beaten if Murray is
:21:44. > :21:52.not 100% focused. The last game that Murray served of course was the
:21:53. > :22:02.break that took the set for Nadal. Evidence of a sharp match mind.
:22:03. > :22:09.And this dangerous five or ten minutes, if Murray is not as present
:22:10. > :22:12.as he needs to be in this match against somebody who does but
:22:13. > :22:51.however, he can turn it around at any second.
:22:52. > :22:58.Momentum, 14-4 out of the last 18 points, it is all with Rafa at the
:22:59. > :23:58.moment. Not often you see Murray lose eight
:23:59. > :24:48.points in a row on his serve will how would you like to ask the first
:24:49. > :24:54.question in a press conference after this? I think it will be a fairly
:24:55. > :25:30.simple one. What went wrong? The knock on effect of the mental
:25:31. > :25:37.side without the clarity of thought, Murray serving at 41% first
:25:38. > :25:39.serves. And only winning 56% when the first serve those in, 39% on the
:25:40. > :26:29.second serve. In Nadal's mind, when Murray is
:26:30. > :26:34.making an force is, he will be patient to stay in the rally and not
:26:35. > :26:37.miss but when he has got the opportunity to drive the forehand,
:26:38. > :28:06.he has the confidence and the platform in the match to go for it.
:28:07. > :28:17.A set and 3-0, Nadal, number five in the world at the moment. He has
:28:18. > :28:22.finished the year at number one before, Novak Djokovic has made that
:28:23. > :28:26.his home lately and he will be the end of the number one for the fourth
:28:27. > :28:30.time, if Andy Murray wins this match for the last group match against
:28:31. > :28:35.Stan Wawrinka he will finish the year at number two, that would be a
:28:36. > :28:40.high for him. Federer needs to go through this tournament unbeaten to
:28:41. > :28:49.perhaps take over Andy Murray but it is in Andy's hands at the moment.
:28:50. > :29:00.This is the top eight in the world. Andy has been distracted over the
:29:01. > :29:04.course of this match in the last 15 or 20 minutes, very disappointing
:29:05. > :29:10.indeed for him. Relevance for next week and the Davis Cup final,
:29:11. > :29:16.probably none. What do you think? No relevance at all but Murray will be
:29:17. > :29:21.frustrated and if this match continues in the same vein he will
:29:22. > :29:27.be disappointed with his performance. He has had a great year
:29:28. > :29:38.but he just needs to try and regain that focus. Not easy to do when you
:29:39. > :29:42.give your opponent a set and a break start, and Rafa playing better. We
:29:43. > :29:47.have focused on Andy for obvious reasons but Rafa making very few
:29:48. > :29:50.errors and hitting the ball powerfully from the back of the
:29:51. > :30:28.court and moving exceptionally well on a hard court.
:30:29. > :32:59.You would think this is a must win game for Andy Murray.
:33:00. > :33:04.When you get 40-0 up, you want to finish the game. Now it has turned
:33:05. > :33:41.into a bit of a scrap, this one. You've got to think you will get a
:33:42. > :34:21.look at Nadal's service game. Judged the top-spin well, Nadal, but
:34:22. > :34:25.his racket up nice and quickly. Murray played a nice, delicate
:34:26. > :37:46.slice. He had the easy approach shot.
:37:47. > :37:55.When you see Murray in this frame of mind, I always think, if he played
:37:56. > :38:00.his matches with nobody watching, nobody in his player's box, if they
:38:01. > :38:16.were sitting backstage, how that would affect his mindset. There was
:38:17. > :38:26.no one to talk to. The crowd are absolutely ready to support him. A
:38:27. > :38:31.lot of matches have been lost from this point of view, so for Rafael
:38:32. > :38:41.Nadal, he knows there is nothing to be taken for granted. A couple of
:38:42. > :38:49.decent swishes of the racket. There might be life in this match yet. He
:38:50. > :39:01.is always a great competitor, he will not give up on that. He has got
:39:02. > :39:07.great returns. Looking at the stats, Nadal has not served particularly
:39:08. > :40:24.well, we'll see if he can take advantage.
:40:25. > :42:51.This freezes him up to take more risks, because he is leading.
:42:52. > :43:07.It is a fourth break of serve in this match for Rafael Nadal, he is
:43:08. > :43:13.in complete control. He will serve for a victory over Andy Murray that
:43:14. > :43:18.will be important to him. This is a sign of this continued improvement.
:43:19. > :43:27.It has been a hungry performance. Competitive. If you had said before
:43:28. > :43:30.this group started that Nadal would win his opening match is against
:43:31. > :43:43.Stan Wawrinka and Andy Murray for the loss of ten games...
:43:44. > :44:02.Looking to put the finishing touches on this match.
:44:03. > :45:32.The ball dropped in on the baseline.
:45:33. > :46:47.Whatever happens here, you can still go through to the semifinals.
:46:48. > :46:56.It has been a strange hour and a half in many ways for Rafael Nadal.
:46:57. > :46:58.So many superb competitive matches. This victory will be a very portable
:46:59. > :47:29.and for him. He has a match point. And that is it. Great to see Rafael
:47:30. > :47:36.Nadal back in London. Last time he was here it was so disappointing.
:47:37. > :47:39.Nadal back in London. Last time he returns and is playing with hunger
:47:40. > :47:58.and fire and finally some confidence. Never bad to see him
:47:59. > :48:08.play. One of the greats of our sport. No good today for Andy
:48:09. > :48:16.Murray, whose concentration certainly was not there. Had his
:48:17. > :48:20.moments, but ultimately not able to dig very deep. Very distracted
:48:21. > :48:32.performance at times. He has one more match to play against than the
:48:33. > :48:37.brink on Friday. I am glad to see he is taking the time to sign a few
:48:38. > :48:54.autographs. That is good, that is classy. He will qualify today if
:48:55. > :49:00.Stan Wawrinka defeats Ferrer or Ferrer defeats Stan Wawrinka in
:49:01. > :49:09.three sets. He is odds-on favourite to go through. As a match, this did
:49:10. > :49:10.not really exist. The number is not good enough anywhere down the
:49:11. > :49:19.left-hand side. Bratton Adele made so few unforced
:49:20. > :49:21.errors in that second set. He tightened things up. -- Rafael
:49:22. > :49:28.Nadal. Big victory for him in terms of his
:49:29. > :49:46.confidence. This man, with Olympic gold, all the
:49:47. > :49:54.Championships, he has never won this. I wonder if this is his week?
:49:55. > :50:04.Impressing his mum, his girlfriend, 70,000 people in here -- 17,000.
:50:05. > :50:10.Well done, that was a terrific performance. Can you give us your
:50:11. > :50:16.thoughts on the matter? First of all, thank you very much, I have
:50:17. > :50:22.been playing against a local player but always the crowd is
:50:23. > :50:27.unbelievable, respectful for everybody, just great to play here
:50:28. > :50:33.again. Thank you very much. For me, it is an important day, one of the
:50:34. > :50:40.best victories of the season, without any doubt. I am happy with
:50:41. > :50:46.the way that I am playing. There are so many layers to your matches. It
:50:47. > :50:50.was very tactical. What areas of the game work particularly well today? I
:50:51. > :50:58.think I played particularly well in general. I said the tactic is to
:50:59. > :51:03.play well. He is not a player you can think, I am going to hit against
:51:04. > :51:07.his forehand or backhand because he has all the shops. The only way to
:51:08. > :51:17.damage him is to play with high-intensity. I don't think I
:51:18. > :51:27.played with many mistakes. I am working hard. It is important for me
:51:28. > :51:36.to see these kinds of results. Well done today. We wish you the very
:51:37. > :51:41.best of luck in the next one. Rafael Nadal. You can hear from the warmth
:51:42. > :51:51.of the applause, how much they love him here and love seeing him back to
:51:52. > :51:53.his best. It does not mean it is over for Andy, he still has a chance
:51:54. > :52:13.to qualify for the semifinals. We have a very special ceremony on
:52:14. > :52:27.court, Lleyton Hewitt has announced he will retire this year, please
:52:28. > :52:33.welcome the ATP president who will present him with this award and
:52:34. > :52:41.please welcome John McEnroe, Boris Becker and Mats Wilander. It is
:52:42. > :52:47.great to see them come on court. This is a special presentation to
:52:48. > :52:57.Lleyton Hewitt, who is retiring from the game at the Australian Open in
:52:58. > :54:26.January. Please welcome onto court, Lleyton Hewitt.
:54:27. > :54:40.I have always admired him a lot. He has acted on court. He is what every
:54:41. > :54:45.young kid should look up to. The kid of six or nine years old. I would be
:54:46. > :54:57.getting them to watch. He will look back on his career and think that he
:54:58. > :55:01.gave it everything. Has been very good first really in tennis.
:55:02. > :55:09.Everybody respects him for what he's done and achieved. I wish him all
:55:10. > :55:19.the best on his retirement and congratulations on his career. And
:55:20. > :55:39.Chris will now present Lleyton Hewitt with his frame.
:55:40. > :55:52.This must be a very proud moment for you. How do you look back on such an
:55:53. > :55:57.amazing career? I feel old. I am lucky enough to sit courtside. It is
:55:58. > :56:05.how the game keeps evolving over the years. I look back at when I was
:56:06. > :56:13.able to play in the Masters Cup. Hold up the trophy. I'm looking
:56:14. > :56:20.forward to finishing at the Australian Open, I would like to
:56:21. > :56:27.thank Chris and the whole tour for organising this for me today, it has
:56:28. > :56:30.been such a big part of my life and I have loved every minute of it out
:56:31. > :56:36.here. Thank you everyone for supporting me. Absolutely, and we
:56:37. > :56:42.wish you all the best at yours truly supporting me. Absolutely, and we
:56:43. > :56:46.and open -- at the Australian Open. What are your plans? I have been
:56:47. > :56:52.appointed the Australian Davis Cup captain, I am still
:56:53. > :56:57.appointed the Australian Davis Cup to work with some talented players
:56:58. > :57:01.appointed the Australian Davis Cup coming forward, I loved being out on
:57:02. > :57:14.appointed the Australian Davis Cup the court and I think I've got
:57:15. > :57:28.something to offer. He has been such a great ambassador for the game, and
:57:29. > :57:34.what a record he's got. He has had some great moments and is one of the
:57:35. > :57:47.great competitors. One was when he tried to do the chest bump. He even
:57:48. > :57:52.made that competitive. Whoever plays him will need to give body and mind
:57:53. > :58:00.to knock him out. Does John McEnroe think he is going to be on court for
:58:01. > :58:04.this event? You don't know. For Lleyton Hewitt, he has had an
:58:05. > :58:09.incredible career. A horrible opponent, I hated playing him. I
:58:10. > :58:16.don't know how many times we played, I only beat him once. When you talk
:58:17. > :58:20.about success and maximising your potential, it's an incredible feat,
:58:21. > :58:25.what he was able to achieve in the game when power was starting to
:58:26. > :58:34.dominate. One of his big jobs now is to look after Nick Carey is -- Nick
:58:35. > :58:43.Krygios. We will see him to look after Nick Carey is -- Nick
:58:44. > :58:49.quite some time. He achieved against the odds because he is not built
:58:50. > :58:50.like the other players, he is quite short, quite slight, he had other
:58:51. > :59:01.weapons. Very much so. He came on short, quite slight, he had other
:59:02. > :59:05.the scene in Adelaide. You look that his game and thought he was a good
:59:06. > :59:13.player but is he going to go on to become World War I? I was not sure
:59:14. > :59:20.-- world number one. His consistency from the back of the court, he was
:59:21. > :59:23.very quick to get the ball past. That was the recipe for success
:59:24. > :59:26.very quick to get the ball past. him. But
:59:27. > :59:32.very quick to get the ball past. has had a catalogue of injuries.
:59:33. > :59:38.very quick to get the ball past. will be fun to watch
:59:39. > :59:42.very quick to get the ball past. time. It has evolved because they
:59:43. > :59:56.are all part of a time. It has evolved because they
:59:57. > :00:04.the information from them. Yellow that they how the game is run, they
:00:05. > :00:09.know how it goes. Take advice from people who have been there. There
:00:10. > :00:16.are governing bodies here. Andy Murray was saying, we have appointed
:00:17. > :00:32.someone who does not know tennis. Andy Murray says he does not know
:00:33. > :00:36.tennis so there we go. A lot of us asked about who we would want to
:00:37. > :00:40.apply for the job, somebody knows a lot about tennis, a lot of people at
:00:41. > :00:45.the LTA, from different sports and you need someone who understands the
:00:46. > :00:52.sport. Michael Downey asked me to get involved in that process and at
:00:53. > :00:57.that stage. So it is your fault? Not yet but you can blame me. He said up
:00:58. > :01:01.until the Olympics in 2016, there are a lot of people they would like
:01:02. > :01:05.to talk to involved in different positions and they are reluctant to
:01:06. > :01:09.talk because they do not want to distract their athletes. That is why
:01:10. > :01:13.the interim position has been put in place. Once the Olympics takes place
:01:14. > :01:18.in 2016, there will be a list of people interested in the job and I
:01:19. > :01:22.would be the first to say if it would be great to have a tennis
:01:23. > :01:28.person. You want them to have a good understanding of the game. It is
:01:29. > :01:33.about business antennas, there are candidates already? It is about
:01:34. > :01:37.participation, we focus so much on performance, I do not know who has
:01:38. > :01:41.thrown themselves into the hat, I go a little bit blank when it comes to
:01:42. > :01:45.this stuff because over 40 years or so I have heard it all. I am very
:01:46. > :01:49.keen on participation getting the numbers are, we have Tim, Greg and
:01:50. > :01:53.Andy Murray in the Davis Cup final and we have this, and participation
:01:54. > :02:00.figures have either trodden water or going down. Tennis is not the only
:02:01. > :02:04.sport where this is a problem. Young people's attention is taken by
:02:05. > :02:09.mobiles and tablets and everything but that is a battle that needs to
:02:10. > :02:17.be one for me as well as performance. What about Andy and
:02:18. > :02:21.Rafa, Andy, it reflects this group format, the way we have seen it with
:02:22. > :02:25.Stan Wawrinka and Djokovic last night, it does not matter if you do
:02:26. > :02:28.not win one of these group matches because you can lose and get through
:02:29. > :02:33.to the semifinals. Not the easy route but it is possible. On
:02:34. > :02:38.reflection of Andy's performance, that would be the route I would
:02:39. > :02:42.take, bad day at the office, forget about it, he got off to a good
:02:43. > :02:47.start, breaking in the first game but when he lost his serve to go
:02:48. > :02:51.1-1, mentally he was distracted and talking to the box and his
:02:52. > :02:56.performance went down. The beauty of the round robin format, he still has
:02:57. > :03:01.a chance of going through to the semifinals. It will be a question of
:03:02. > :03:06.pushing this to one side and saying this would be your next match,
:03:07. > :03:09.playing Stan Wawrinka and go out with a much better mindset and
:03:10. > :03:13.clearer game plan and execute that and get through to the semifinals.
:03:14. > :03:20.Wood he wants to avoid Djokovic in the semifinals so he wants to come
:03:21. > :03:26.second in the group. That is the tactic. But Rafa, maybe not back to
:03:27. > :03:31.his best but getting pretty close. He has talked about the steps he
:03:32. > :03:34.needs to take, getting victories against the big players is the way
:03:35. > :03:38.to get confidence back, he played the big points well, the break at
:03:39. > :03:41.the end of the first set was wonderful, dominating with his
:03:42. > :03:45.forehand again in the getting length of the forehand which he has not
:03:46. > :03:49.done for a while and he is going for it. You have to play to win and get
:03:50. > :03:53.those wins, that is the only way confidence will come back. He
:03:54. > :03:58.appears to be getting there which is wonderful for the game. That proved
:03:59. > :04:02.his variety of shots, hitting from the back and moving his opponent
:04:03. > :04:09.around and that lovely drop shot we have seen so often from Rafa. You
:04:10. > :04:12.look at who would get the upper hand early on in the rallies and who
:04:13. > :04:16.could push their opponent further behind the baseline and that is
:04:17. > :04:19.where I was impressed with how he hit his backhand crosscourt, this
:04:20. > :04:24.was a second serve return to get three set points and once he regains
:04:25. > :04:28.that confidence in his game and plays points a bit better and be
:04:29. > :04:34.more aggressive and go closer to the line, it was a disappointing
:04:35. > :04:39.performance from Andy but we should not let that detract from how well
:04:40. > :04:43.Rafa change direction well and played a complete match. It will
:04:44. > :04:47.surprise no one at the top of the game, Novak, Roger, they have seen
:04:48. > :04:51.it before but I never thought we would see Rafa struggling but he did
:04:52. > :04:56.this year and he has had to respond. He loves the game and practice, and
:04:57. > :05:02.there is no substitute for wins, this was a big one for him today.
:05:03. > :05:07.Andy is often so good in the long rallies but the long ones like this
:05:08. > :05:11.were being won by Rafa. You talk about the long rallies, Andy will
:05:12. > :05:17.usually get the upper hand because he is so good, he is one of the
:05:18. > :05:21.game's greats. To me, Rafa was impressive, he stayed in with his
:05:22. > :05:26.backhand crosscourt a lot, and when he could get his forehand into play,
:05:27. > :05:29.that is when he would be at his most aggressive. Two steps forward and
:05:30. > :05:34.takes the ball just inside the baseline and change direction up the
:05:35. > :05:39.line. That is as good as Rafa can play on an indoor hard court. How
:05:40. > :05:45.did our poll go in the end as to whether he would win another slam, I
:05:46. > :05:47.cannot imagine he will not get himself into position,
:05:48. > :05:52.quarterfinals, semifinals, once he does that, getting comfortable on
:05:53. > :05:57.the forehand and the defence of the backhand, why not? We talked about
:05:58. > :06:01.the comments he made in Miami and getting nervous on the big points
:06:02. > :06:05.and pointing out that he has not beaten the big three this year which
:06:06. > :06:11.is unheard of until today. He just showed on the big points how strong
:06:12. > :06:14.he is and strong mentally again. Very much so, when you reflect back
:06:15. > :06:19.to that press conference in March, he was brutally honest and it was
:06:20. > :06:22.slightly surprisingly an athlete because it was almost as if you
:06:23. > :06:27.saying there is a weakness your armoury. He is not honest and says
:06:28. > :06:31.everything is fine, everyone will look and say that he is not, missing
:06:32. > :06:38.shots that he never used to miss. But that sums up Rafa, what you see
:06:39. > :06:42.is what you get. He has not necessarily changed anything away
:06:43. > :06:46.from the court, he has always worked fantastically hard but now he has
:06:47. > :06:49.gained a bit of momentum in tournaments. He has played some
:06:50. > :06:53.better matches, the final in Basel where he lost to Federer and be
:06:54. > :06:58.confidence coming back to his game and that will be reflected in the
:06:59. > :07:03.way he plays the big points. Andy has to go back and regroup and play
:07:04. > :07:07.Stan Wawrinka. World number two is still up for grabs, you need is two
:07:08. > :07:11.wins so he needs to beat Stan and Federer is now still unbeaten, if he
:07:12. > :07:16.goes unbeaten through to the final, he would be world number two. This
:07:17. > :07:22.match, you can say is over but Stan has something to prove as well, he
:07:23. > :07:27.played poorly against Rafa, Rafa has the hex on people so far. Do the
:07:28. > :07:32.press, stay patient with all of the stupid questions we ask and come
:07:33. > :07:37.back on Friday and he will be fine. Speak for yourself. You ask the
:07:38. > :07:43.smart ones soon. We are going to talk Davis Cup now and Jamie Murray
:07:44. > :07:49.will come in and chat with us. Am I out? We will do musical chairs but
:07:50. > :07:55.we have the big Davis Cup final coming up next week. In 2004, Rafa
:07:56. > :08:05.won it for the first time. That moment was maximum. Novak in 2010.
:08:06. > :08:10.It inspires you to play your best. Last year, Roger won it. Won one of
:08:11. > :08:18.the big moments of my life. So did stand. For me it was a dream, to
:08:19. > :08:22.play for your country is so special. This year, can Andy and company
:08:23. > :08:28.follow suit? Belgium across Great Britain across the BBC from next
:08:29. > :08:32.Friday. We cannot wait, what a journey it has been and we will be
:08:33. > :08:37.heading off for that next week and coming up tomorrow at 8:30pm on
:08:38. > :08:41.radio five live you can listen to the wilderness years. Tim Henman,
:08:42. > :08:47.John Lloyd and the wilderness years. Tim Henman,
:08:48. > :08:52.years gone by in the Davis Cup but it will all get a bit nerve wracking
:08:53. > :08:54.next week. I am nervous, I don't know how you are feeling Jamie. I am
:08:55. > :09:01.looking forward to it, it will know how you are feeling Jamie. I am
:09:02. > :09:06.great week for the guys. A lots of hard work has gone into it in the
:09:07. > :09:08.last few years since Leon took over, we were in the lower divisions
:09:09. > :09:14.of the over, we were in the lower divisions
:09:15. > :09:17.in a lot of hard work and the team deserves to be in this position. You
:09:18. > :09:23.have played in some crucial doubles matches, some of them very tense,
:09:24. > :09:28.which one has been the worst? Won the Australian one, against France
:09:29. > :09:33.we played well but Australia we played well but it was such an epic
:09:34. > :09:42.match, peaks and troughs and ups and downs. We knew we had to win to make
:09:43. > :09:47.it happen and somehow we managed to get through in five sets. The fourth
:09:48. > :09:53.set was pretty tense, wasn't it? Yes, I've weigh myself of that,
:09:54. > :09:57.letting them come back into it, because I knew Andy had to play
:09:58. > :10:03.singles next day and he was battling a bit with his back and I felt bad
:10:04. > :10:08.for keeping him out there on court. He played an amazing three sets
:10:09. > :10:16.against Bernard Tomic. It shows what the Davis Cup means because Sam
:10:17. > :10:21.Groth, he got so tense in that fifth set alongside Lleyton Hewitt. Yes,
:10:22. > :10:25.the other 48 weeks of the year, you are out there as an individual but
:10:26. > :10:29.when you are playing in Davis Cup, you are representing your country
:10:30. > :10:33.and all of your team-mates on the side of the court. It is a different
:10:34. > :10:36.and all of your team-mates on the type of pressure and it is amazing
:10:37. > :10:38.what we talk about, the journey the British team have had this year but
:10:39. > :10:41.it goes further back as Jamie talked British team have had this year but
:10:42. > :10:48.about with Leon getting involved and being Davis Cup captain. There have
:10:49. > :10:51.been bumps along the road but the team has been incredible and the
:10:52. > :10:56.opportunity they have now in Belgium is incredibly exciting. As we all
:10:57. > :11:00.know, home court advantage is important so we should emphasise the
:11:01. > :11:05.challenge of going away and playing indoors on clay will not be easy.
:11:06. > :11:09.There will be outnumbered 9-1 in the crowds with most of the audience
:11:10. > :11:15.being for Belgium but it will be great to watch. That goes again, you
:11:16. > :11:22.have had three home ties and now you can't see those wonderful fans, I am
:11:23. > :11:26.sure a few Brits will go. We were due an away tie, it was great to
:11:27. > :11:31.play at home to get to this stage but another challenge for us and it
:11:32. > :11:38.will be difficult away from home and playing on clay will not be so easy
:11:39. > :11:44.but the team believes in itself and we have come a long way. We want to
:11:45. > :11:49.finish the job. It is huge, you sound so relaxed like it is another
:11:50. > :11:58.tournament, Davis Cup final, last in the final in 1978, not one it since
:11:59. > :12:03.1936. Andy has talked a bit. But are you feeling the pressure as it gets
:12:04. > :12:10.closer? People keep talking about it and asking so it is on your mind
:12:11. > :12:15.that I have had this tournament to focus on as well which is a big end
:12:16. > :12:20.of year event for us which gives my mind off it a bit. When everything
:12:21. > :12:24.is done here, I will turn my attention to Belgium. Who is the
:12:25. > :12:31.captain when you are on court with Andy? I think it is me if I am
:12:32. > :12:37.honest. For the most part until I start suggesting where he serves and
:12:38. > :12:41.then it changes. You seem to have a great knowledge, you did not play a
:12:42. > :12:45.lot of doubles together? Not so much when we were growing up but we
:12:46. > :12:52.played quite a lot since we have both been on tour, I have even
:12:53. > :12:57.helped getting into some of the Masters tournaments. We know exactly
:12:58. > :12:59.how each other is going to play, strengths and weaknesses on the
:13:00. > :13:04.court and what to expect from each other and that gives you confidence
:13:05. > :13:09.and calmness for when you go out there. We wish you the best of luck
:13:10. > :13:14.for here and next week, we are all looking forward to it, we will be
:13:15. > :13:19.back tomorrow at 2pm on BBC Two, Roger Federer against Kei Nishikori
:13:20. > :13:23.but today, it was not a vintage Murray but it was certainly Rafa at
:13:24. > :13:27.his best, we hope you enjoyed it, goodbye.
:13:28. > :13:38.COMMENTATOR: Clash of champions, we are settling in nicely. It is great
:13:39. > :13:45.hitting, all Rafa at the moment. Murray Dixon self out of the hole,
:13:46. > :13:52.the first set to Rafa Nadal. He is in complete control in this group
:13:53. > :13:53.match. And that is it, great to see Rafa
:13:54. > :14:00.some familiar faces are coming your way.
