0:00:31 > 0:00:33Hello and a very warm welcome to Fort William,

0:00:33 > 0:00:35where the best mountain bikers in the world

0:00:35 > 0:00:37come to show us what they're made of.

0:00:37 > 0:00:39It's going to be a white knuckle roller coaster ride

0:00:39 > 0:00:43with competitors pushing themselves to their limit.

0:00:43 > 0:00:46What a fabulous weekend of racing we have ahead of us.

0:00:46 > 0:00:49We've got the fantastic combative 4X,

0:00:49 > 0:00:54and five kilometres of super-fast downhill action in Fort William.

0:00:54 > 0:00:55But that is not all.

0:00:55 > 0:00:58We'll also be heading just down the road to meet some enterprising

0:00:58 > 0:01:01young film-makers who have been making a name for themselves.

0:01:01 > 0:01:04We thought at first that I was going to be quite scared

0:01:04 > 0:01:06staying in the hut alone

0:01:06 > 0:01:09but, in actual fact, it was quite amazing.

0:01:09 > 0:01:11We'll be finding out what it's like for young riders keen to

0:01:11 > 0:01:14make their mark here in Fort William.

0:01:14 > 0:01:17People are cheering, and it's really noticeable. It feels like...

0:01:17 > 0:01:19It's almost like a wall of sound.

0:01:19 > 0:01:21It's just crazy.

0:01:21 > 0:01:24And I'll be climbing a hill in the Western Highlands

0:01:24 > 0:01:29that I think is one of the finest mountains in the whole of Scotland.

0:01:29 > 0:01:32That is all to come. We're going to start with the gladiatorial 4X,

0:01:32 > 0:01:36where racers ride on a specially designed, super technical course.

0:01:36 > 0:01:38There's sure to be lots of bumps and bruises on this one.

0:01:38 > 0:01:41- Oh, my goodness me! - You're racing there with no mercy,

0:01:41 > 0:01:45so you have to hit somebody a little bit, and use your shoulders.

0:01:45 > 0:01:50It's only one pedal in, and from that moment on it's a lot of rocks.

0:01:50 > 0:01:51A rough track.

0:01:51 > 0:01:54Pretty loose at the moment because of the dry weather that we have,

0:01:54 > 0:01:56but it's a fun track.

0:01:56 > 0:02:00In this discipline, four riders battle it out head-to-head,

0:02:00 > 0:02:01going flat out from top to bottom

0:02:01 > 0:02:04with the top two going through to the next round.

0:02:04 > 0:02:07It's a tough race for tough riders.

0:02:07 > 0:02:09We're going to start off with the women's event,

0:02:09 > 0:02:11and there's real interest from a British point of view

0:02:11 > 0:02:15with Katy Curd, who already won the Williamsburg 4X last month.

0:02:15 > 0:02:17But she'll be up against tough opposition

0:02:17 > 0:02:20from the Netherlands, Anneke Beerten,

0:02:20 > 0:02:22and, from France, Celine Gros.

0:02:22 > 0:02:27I would like to be fast and have a good result in 4X.

0:02:27 > 0:02:29So I will do my best,

0:02:29 > 0:02:31and, well, I will see.

0:02:31 > 0:02:36It's a real mountain bike track, 4X.

0:02:36 > 0:02:40It's my best track, the best event of the year.

0:02:40 > 0:02:44Celine Gros is one of the strongest racers on the circuit,

0:02:44 > 0:02:47but she's up against some tough competition,

0:02:47 > 0:02:49not least from the Brits.

0:02:49 > 0:02:52A lot of tracks are based on power straight out of the gates,

0:02:52 > 0:02:54but this is really technical.

0:02:54 > 0:02:55So it's one pedal stroke out the gate,

0:02:55 > 0:02:57then it's into some really technical jumps.

0:02:57 > 0:03:00So it's... Yeah, it's one that suits me a lot more.

0:03:00 > 0:03:02Obviously it's a very short race, 4X. It's pretty gladiatorial.

0:03:02 > 0:03:04But are you aware of the noise the crowd make?

0:03:04 > 0:03:07Because as soon as there's a Brit rider up, they go mental.

0:03:07 > 0:03:11They do, they go wild when you arrive at the finish arena as well.

0:03:11 > 0:03:15It's...it's... Yeah, it's just crazy. It's amazing.

0:03:15 > 0:03:17We're joining the competition for the women's semifinals.

0:03:17 > 0:03:19In the first heat, on the far left,

0:03:19 > 0:03:22is 28-year-old Steffi Marth from Germany.

0:03:22 > 0:03:26Next to her is Britain's top female 4X racer, Katy Curd.

0:03:26 > 0:03:29Then there's the Swiss rider, Lucia Oetjen.

0:03:29 > 0:03:33And finishing up the quartet in green is another strong Brit -

0:03:33 > 0:03:34Suzanne Lacey.

0:03:36 > 0:03:39And they're off out the gate, over the first bumps.

0:03:39 > 0:03:43And already Katy's taken the lead, but Lucia Oetjen close behind.

0:03:43 > 0:03:45Suzanne Lacey currently last.

0:03:45 > 0:03:47Katy loves this course at Fort William.

0:03:47 > 0:03:49The technical riding really suits her style.

0:03:49 > 0:03:51Looking good for her just now.

0:03:51 > 0:03:54Heading down towards the rock garden,

0:03:54 > 0:03:56and she's still in the lead with Lucia Oetjen second,

0:03:56 > 0:03:58Steffi Marth next.

0:03:58 > 0:04:00Katy dominating this heat.

0:04:00 > 0:04:02This will be a real confidence boost for her.

0:04:02 > 0:04:04Battle now is for second place.

0:04:04 > 0:04:07It's the top two who go through to the final.

0:04:07 > 0:04:09Round the last corner, down to the finish.

0:04:09 > 0:04:12Katy is way ahead of her rivals.

0:04:12 > 0:04:15Comfortably over the line in first. Who's second, though?

0:04:15 > 0:04:18Lucia Oetjen behind her. They'll go through to the final.

0:04:18 > 0:04:21Suzanne Lacey and Steffi Marth are out.

0:04:23 > 0:04:26So lining up for the second semifinal is a strong rider

0:04:26 > 0:04:29from Australia, Caroline Buchanan.

0:04:29 > 0:04:31Next to her, a real veteran of the sport,

0:04:31 > 0:04:33Anneke Beerten from the Netherlands.

0:04:33 > 0:04:36Then there's Helene Fruhwirth from Austria.

0:04:36 > 0:04:40And finally Celine Gros from France.

0:04:40 > 0:04:42All eyes on the gate. There it is. It's off.

0:04:42 > 0:04:44It's Anneke Beerten out first,

0:04:44 > 0:04:48but Caroline Buchanan pushed ahead and is now in the lead.

0:04:48 > 0:04:50Disappointing start, though, for Celine Gros.

0:04:50 > 0:04:53Buchanan's powering ahead over the first humps and bumps.

0:04:53 > 0:04:55Getting a good start so important.

0:04:56 > 0:04:58But look at this into the rock garden.

0:04:58 > 0:05:02Gros had a fantastic ride there. She's now out in front.

0:05:02 > 0:05:06She came second here last year, so she's giving it everything today.

0:05:07 > 0:05:10Caroline Buchanan still holding on to second place

0:05:10 > 0:05:13in a tough battle with Anneke Beerten.

0:05:13 > 0:05:15So down into the final stretch,

0:05:15 > 0:05:18Celine Gros crosses the line first with Caroline Buchanan second.

0:05:18 > 0:05:20So they're through to the finals.

0:05:20 > 0:05:23The race is over, though, for Fruhwirth and Beerten.

0:05:25 > 0:05:29So this is it, the final of the 2013 women's 4X.

0:05:29 > 0:05:31Up at the start gate on the far left,

0:05:31 > 0:05:33it's Australia's Caroline Buchanan.

0:05:33 > 0:05:35Then our very own Katy Curd.

0:05:35 > 0:05:38Next to her, Lucia Oetjen from Switzerland.

0:05:38 > 0:05:40And finally, France's Celine Gros.

0:05:42 > 0:05:45Shoulder to shoulder out the gate and over the first humps.

0:05:45 > 0:05:47And it's Buchanan and Curd in front!

0:05:48 > 0:05:52Katy Curd challenging here, but Buchanan's leading it out.

0:05:52 > 0:05:54Under pressure from the British rider, though.

0:05:54 > 0:05:56These two now neck-and-neck

0:05:56 > 0:05:59with Celine Gros and Lucia Oetjen battling it out for third.

0:06:01 > 0:06:05So down towards the rock garden, and it's Katy Curd really going for it.

0:06:05 > 0:06:09So much skill in this sport - riders need to be both precise and fast.

0:06:09 > 0:06:12And this is it, the British girl leading the field

0:06:12 > 0:06:15round the last corner, down to the final straight.

0:06:15 > 0:06:16She's going to make it!

0:06:16 > 0:06:20Yes, Katy Curd has won the Fort William 4X!

0:06:20 > 0:06:24Fantastic. Behind her Buchanan, Oetjen third.

0:06:24 > 0:06:27But just look what that means to Katy Curd.

0:06:27 > 0:06:31My goodness. She looks surprised, but very, very happy.

0:06:31 > 0:06:33I feel over the moon. I can't believe it, you know?

0:06:33 > 0:06:36I knew Caroline was going to have a really good start,

0:06:36 > 0:06:39so I chose second gate just to try and get the outside

0:06:39 > 0:06:41to carry some speed. And then...

0:06:41 > 0:06:42Yeah, I just can't believe it.

0:06:42 > 0:06:45That was an incredible move to get into the front there.

0:06:45 > 0:06:47I thought she would leave it a little bit wide -

0:06:47 > 0:06:50it's quite hard to go inside, so I just thought I'd go for it.

0:06:50 > 0:06:53I had a big drift on just coming into the rocks, but I held on to it.

0:06:53 > 0:06:55Winning on a home course must be brilliant.

0:06:55 > 0:06:57Oh, it feels so good.

0:06:57 > 0:06:59As I say, I've worked so hard for this and it's...

0:06:59 > 0:07:03It's been a massive goal of mine, so, just... Yeah, so, so happy.

0:07:04 > 0:07:06So, confirmation of those final results.

0:07:06 > 0:07:09Fourth place goes to Celine Gros from France

0:07:09 > 0:07:12with Switzerland's Lucia Oetjen taking third.

0:07:12 > 0:07:14Caroline Buchanan's in second place,

0:07:14 > 0:07:17but the winner here today is Katy Curd from Great Britain.

0:07:18 > 0:07:20What an amazing result there for Katy Curd.

0:07:20 > 0:07:23The first ever British women's winner

0:07:23 > 0:07:25of the 4X here in Fort William.

0:07:25 > 0:07:29In the men's 4X, we have got the strong Czech contingent

0:07:29 > 0:07:33of Prokop and Slavik and Britain's hopeful, Scott Beaumont.

0:07:33 > 0:07:35If you can get away from the start leading,

0:07:35 > 0:07:37you're in a great position in any 4X race.

0:07:37 > 0:07:40If you can sort of dominate and lead from the front,

0:07:40 > 0:07:41it's a great place to be.

0:07:41 > 0:07:43The most technical part of this track, however,

0:07:43 > 0:07:45remains the rock section.

0:07:45 > 0:07:47That's where, firstly, you have to negotiate the rocks.

0:07:47 > 0:07:50Second, you have three guys around you trying to knock you off,

0:07:50 > 0:07:53get past you and everything else they're trying to do.

0:07:53 > 0:07:54Thirdly, you want to avoid punctures.

0:07:54 > 0:07:57If you can get away from the punctures and not have a mechanical

0:07:57 > 0:08:00on your bike going down those rocks, then you should be home and dry.

0:08:00 > 0:08:04This is the weekend the world's best riders come to Fort William.

0:08:04 > 0:08:07Right now for the men, the Czechs are at the top of the sport,

0:08:07 > 0:08:10with Tomas Slavik ranked number one.

0:08:10 > 0:08:12But he's never won here.

0:08:12 > 0:08:15You know, it's so hard to do a decent run on this track.

0:08:15 > 0:08:19The track, the surface is so loose, so you never know.

0:08:19 > 0:08:22Sometimes you make the turn at the same speed as you did before

0:08:22 > 0:08:26and it's not slipping. But then, just, you're lying on the ground.

0:08:26 > 0:08:30So that's a pretty hard thing about this track - to predict

0:08:30 > 0:08:32what's going to happen. I've always had bad luck here.

0:08:32 > 0:08:36It's one of the best events in our World Cup circuit.

0:08:36 > 0:08:38I would love to win on this track

0:08:38 > 0:08:41and I would love to be here standing on a first spot.

0:08:41 > 0:08:43Last year it didn't work out for me.

0:08:45 > 0:08:49We're picking up the action in the men's race for the first semifinal.

0:08:49 > 0:08:52On the far left, young British rider Isaac Mundy. Just 19 years old.

0:08:52 > 0:08:55He's up against Quentin Derbier from France.

0:08:55 > 0:08:57And the two top Czech riders,

0:08:57 > 0:09:03Tomas Slavik with last year's winner here at Fort William, Michal Prokop.

0:09:03 > 0:09:04And they're off.

0:09:04 > 0:09:06Oh, that's not a good start for Mundy, though.

0:09:06 > 0:09:08He's trailing behind the other three.

0:09:08 > 0:09:10Slavik into the lead with Derbier

0:09:10 > 0:09:12and Prokop battling for second.

0:09:12 > 0:09:15The fastest get down this course in under 40 seconds.

0:09:15 > 0:09:18Tomas Slavik currently going full pelt.

0:09:18 > 0:09:22He just loves riding 4X and has built his own track at home.

0:09:22 > 0:09:24It's so steep, you almost don't need to pedal.

0:09:24 > 0:09:28Just brake and hit the jumps at over 60 kilometres per hour.

0:09:29 > 0:09:33Around the last bend and down to the final straight, it's Slavik going to

0:09:33 > 0:09:36cross the line first with his fellow Czech, Michael Prokop safely

0:09:36 > 0:09:39through in second place. They're through to the finals.

0:09:39 > 0:09:42Derbier and Mundy are out.

0:09:44 > 0:09:47In the second men's semifinal, another Slavik to watch out for.

0:09:47 > 0:09:51This time it's 24-year-old Hannes Slavik from Austria.

0:09:51 > 0:09:54Next to him is the Swiss rider, David Graf.

0:09:54 > 0:09:57Then it's the British best hope, Scott Beaumont.

0:09:57 > 0:09:59Finally, Joseph Vejvoda from Austria.

0:10:02 > 0:10:03And they're off.

0:10:03 > 0:10:06Once again, neck-and-neck as they head over the first bumps.

0:10:06 > 0:10:08Oh, a skid there from Vejvoda as he tries to cross

0:10:08 > 0:10:10over to the inside line.

0:10:10 > 0:10:13And it's David Graf taking the lead from Scott Beaumont.

0:10:13 > 0:10:16Scott looking comfortable in second place.

0:10:16 > 0:10:19If he can stay there, he'll be through.

0:10:19 > 0:10:21They head into the most technical section of the course -

0:10:21 > 0:10:22the rock garden.

0:10:22 > 0:10:25Now Scott's been at the forefront of this sport from the very start,

0:10:25 > 0:10:29so let's hope his experience pays off today. Round the final bend.

0:10:29 > 0:10:31Beaumont's under pressure. No!

0:10:31 > 0:10:34Austria's Hannes Slavik cranked up his speed, now ahead of Beaumont.

0:10:34 > 0:10:37So crossing the line it's David Graf first,

0:10:37 > 0:10:38Hannes Slavik second.

0:10:38 > 0:10:40They'll go through to the finals,

0:10:40 > 0:10:43but there's no chance of a podium this year for Scott Beaumont.

0:10:43 > 0:10:45Disappointing for him.

0:10:47 > 0:10:51So in the gate, ready for the final of this year's 4X competition,

0:10:51 > 0:10:53are Hannes Slavik from Austria.

0:10:53 > 0:10:56Next to him is the Swiss rider David Graf.

0:10:56 > 0:11:00Then there's the two Czech rivals, Tomas Slavik and Michal Prokop.

0:11:04 > 0:11:06Gate down and they're off.

0:11:06 > 0:11:09Very even as they head down.

0:11:09 > 0:11:11But Tomas Slavik taking an early lead.

0:11:11 > 0:11:13Prokop hard behind on the inside line.

0:11:15 > 0:11:18But it's Slavik ahead. Glances behind.

0:11:18 > 0:11:22He's never come first here and so wants to take this win.

0:11:22 > 0:11:23Such a fierce competitor.

0:11:23 > 0:11:26He studied sport and nutrition at university,

0:11:26 > 0:11:29but for him, 4X is all about having fun.

0:11:29 > 0:11:31"If you don't have fun," he says, "you just don't go fast."

0:11:31 > 0:11:34Well, he's certainly going fast today as he comes into that

0:11:34 > 0:11:36final bend.

0:11:36 > 0:11:40Behind him, Prokop is in second place with Graf in third.

0:11:40 > 0:11:43But it's Tomas Slavik over the line first,

0:11:43 > 0:11:45and that will mean the world to him.

0:11:45 > 0:11:49It was my goal for this season, like winning the Worlds and definitely to

0:11:49 > 0:11:51take the win, of course, in the 4X Pro Tour series,

0:11:51 > 0:11:55but winning in Fort William it's always, like, twice as big.

0:11:56 > 0:11:59So the final results look like this -

0:11:59 > 0:12:01in fourth is Hannes Slavik from Austria,

0:12:01 > 0:12:04with third place going to Switzerland's David Graf.

0:12:04 > 0:12:07Czech rider Michal Prokop comes in second,

0:12:07 > 0:12:09but taking the win is Tomas Slavik.

0:12:09 > 0:12:11What a fantastic result for him.

0:12:11 > 0:12:13When I look back in the day, in the past,

0:12:13 > 0:12:17I was just dreaming about winning in Fort William.

0:12:17 > 0:12:20This year it finally worked out, and I'm unbelievably stoked.

0:12:20 > 0:12:23It means for me, like, another title of a world champion.

0:12:23 > 0:12:25You know, the crowd, the track,

0:12:25 > 0:12:30everything, it just makes one big thing that I'm really stoked from.

0:12:30 > 0:12:32Well, congratulations to Tomas Slavik,

0:12:32 > 0:12:35finally topping the podium here at Fort William.

0:12:35 > 0:12:38Now we're going to take a short break from the action,

0:12:38 > 0:12:41but we're heading just down the road to meet some local film-makers

0:12:41 > 0:12:44who have been making something of a name for themselves.

0:12:52 > 0:12:54Mountain biking is all about adventure,

0:12:54 > 0:12:58but it also offers opportunity for great photography and film-making.

0:12:58 > 0:13:01Earlier this year, the annual Fort William Mountain Festival ran

0:13:01 > 0:13:05a competition looking for the best movies on offer.

0:13:05 > 0:13:08Entries came from all over the world, but some of the best and

0:13:08 > 0:13:13most exciting came from young people living right here in Lochaber.

0:13:13 > 0:13:16FOLK MUSIC

0:13:16 > 0:13:19Fort William is probably the best place for training

0:13:19 > 0:13:21in a variety of tracks.

0:13:21 > 0:13:26The training part of it is that the weather changes every day

0:13:26 > 0:13:29or twice a day or something like that.

0:13:29 > 0:13:32It definitely makes it good for all kinds of conditions.

0:13:32 > 0:13:35The track also has a bit of everything in it -

0:13:35 > 0:13:37from rocks to roots to jumps.

0:13:37 > 0:13:38It's pretty ideal.

0:13:41 > 0:13:45Downhill At Nevis Range was filmed and edited by Andrew Ashworth.

0:13:45 > 0:13:48And this song created by the Loch Lomond-based band

0:13:48 > 0:13:50Have Mercy Las Vegas.

0:13:50 > 0:13:55In an intensive day, Andrew and Keir Coupland shot the whole film

0:13:55 > 0:13:58in one run down the World Cup course.

0:13:58 > 0:14:01We brought two cameras with us. We had one that was stationary,

0:14:01 > 0:14:04and we'd have one that Andrew would hold that was following me around.

0:14:04 > 0:14:06And, em...

0:14:06 > 0:14:09We'd do the shots, decide if we liked it or not,

0:14:09 > 0:14:13decide if it was a good idea, decide if we could improve it.

0:14:13 > 0:14:15Every part of the course he wanted to film,

0:14:15 > 0:14:18if he didn't think the shot was quite what it could have been or

0:14:18 > 0:14:21if he wanted to do it again to confirm that, I'd push up a

0:14:21 > 0:14:25little bit up again, get back to the stuff where I can get my speed up.

0:14:25 > 0:14:27If he got a great shot and thought, "Oh, that's good," I thought,

0:14:27 > 0:14:30"No, maybe I could have rode that a bit faster."

0:14:30 > 0:14:32Or, "Keir, that was good,

0:14:32 > 0:14:34"but I didn't quite get the angle I wanted to get it."

0:14:34 > 0:14:35So we'd push up, we'd get it

0:14:35 > 0:14:39and we'd perfect it to the standard that we thought was good enough.

0:14:39 > 0:14:40And then you'd move on.

0:14:40 > 0:14:43That would just be the whole process going down the hill.

0:14:43 > 0:14:46But I definitely was pretty tired after making it!

0:14:48 > 0:14:53Being here, it's just like a massive playground to me. It's just endless.

0:14:53 > 0:14:55Endless amounts of trails and mountain biking to do.

0:14:55 > 0:14:59Not just any of the trails that we filmed.

0:14:59 > 0:15:02There's so much more for any kind of riding that you want to do.

0:15:02 > 0:15:05And just being...living here in the outdoor capital of the UK,

0:15:05 > 0:15:10it's just so amazing. I absolutely love living here.

0:15:10 > 0:15:14I couldn't imagine myself living anywhere else as a mountain biker.

0:15:14 > 0:15:16Oh!

0:15:16 > 0:15:17That was not as fun.

0:15:17 > 0:15:22When you're going downhill, it's like you go fast but you don't hurry.

0:15:22 > 0:15:24Because you don't want to get ahead of yourself

0:15:24 > 0:15:25when you're riding a downhill bike.

0:15:25 > 0:15:28If you get ahead of yourself, especially when you're racing,

0:15:28 > 0:15:31it's a big mistake and you'll end up having a slower time.

0:15:32 > 0:15:35I get inspired going to the World Cup. And I just...

0:15:35 > 0:15:38It makes me want to be a professional mountain biker more than

0:15:38 > 0:15:39anything in the world.

0:15:41 > 0:15:44This area is not just known for its mountain biking.

0:15:44 > 0:15:47For nearly a decade, the Fort William Mountain Festival has

0:15:47 > 0:15:51celebrated all aspects of life and the environment here.

0:15:52 > 0:15:55This film about the Glencoe Ski Centre shows just how

0:15:55 > 0:15:58evocative this landscape is.

0:15:58 > 0:16:01The community is the strength on that hill,

0:16:01 > 0:16:03and that's what holds it together.

0:16:03 > 0:16:06I'm inspired by the fact that it's non-commercialised.

0:16:06 > 0:16:08I love the fact that the signs are hand-written.

0:16:08 > 0:16:10It's a photographer's dream up there.

0:16:10 > 0:16:12It's a living museum, basically.

0:16:12 > 0:16:15I just hope that's a lot of it can...

0:16:15 > 0:16:17I hope that it can survive in the future

0:16:17 > 0:16:21and that a lot of the old equipment that they've got can be placed

0:16:21 > 0:16:25into some sort of historic museum as the start

0:16:25 > 0:16:28of the British skiing industry, really.

0:16:29 > 0:16:33This film, Meall A' Bhuiridh, was made by Misha Somerville,

0:16:33 > 0:16:36and the music created by Barry Reid.

0:16:36 > 0:16:41The inspiration for the project, however, came from Jen Wilcox.

0:16:41 > 0:16:44She started photographing the area in 2009

0:16:44 > 0:16:46as part of her degree submission.

0:16:46 > 0:16:49This was a period of uncertainty for the ski centre,

0:16:49 > 0:16:53as it moved from the threat of closure to a more secure future

0:16:53 > 0:16:55under its new owner, Andy Meldrum.

0:16:55 > 0:16:58I didn't know the outcome and they didn't know the outcome.

0:16:58 > 0:17:04And in 2010...Andy came and bought the centre over,

0:17:04 > 0:17:08and they had the most amazing season that they've had in decades.

0:17:08 > 0:17:10So it looked stunning for photographic images,

0:17:10 > 0:17:13because everything was white and everything

0:17:13 > 0:17:17because very illustrative and graphic, actually.

0:17:17 > 0:17:21The project turned from looking at an industry that was closing,

0:17:21 > 0:17:24I guess, into then looking at its history

0:17:24 > 0:17:28and starting to look at the land in a very different way.

0:17:28 > 0:17:33And realising what an amazing community is on the hill as well.

0:17:33 > 0:17:35- How are you doing?- I'm OK. How are you?

0:17:37 > 0:17:40When I was speaking to ski patrol about the project

0:17:40 > 0:17:43I was doing with the art school, they basically said,

0:17:43 > 0:17:45"Well, you'd be welcome to use the hut."

0:17:45 > 0:17:48And I was very, very grateful for this.

0:17:48 > 0:17:52And I...thought at first that I was going to be quite scared

0:17:52 > 0:17:56staying in alone but, in actual fact, it was quite amazing.

0:17:56 > 0:17:58I used to wake up through the night

0:17:58 > 0:18:03and there was deer just surrounding the hut.

0:18:03 > 0:18:07And it was quite a special moment on quite a few occasions.

0:18:07 > 0:18:10And it was a great base to go up and take photographs on the hill.

0:18:12 > 0:18:13The hills and the history,

0:18:13 > 0:18:17there's thousands of stories that you could focus on about Glencoe.

0:18:19 > 0:18:21Our congratulations to everyone involved in these

0:18:21 > 0:18:23award-winning films.

0:18:23 > 0:18:27And for more about the Fort William Mountain Festival, follow us

0:18:27 > 0:18:31on Facebook and become part of the bigger adventure show community.

0:18:31 > 0:18:35Right now, though, it's back to the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup.

0:18:42 > 0:18:45Welcome back here to the action in Fort William,

0:18:45 > 0:18:49where we will soon be catching up with the women's Downhill World Cup.

0:18:49 > 0:18:51But firstly we are going to meet a young Scots rider called

0:18:51 > 0:18:53Lachlan Blair.

0:18:53 > 0:18:56He is starting his journey as a professional World Cup rider

0:18:56 > 0:19:01and he is competing today in the junior part of the World Cup event.

0:19:01 > 0:19:03I feel a bit nervous, I suppose.

0:19:03 > 0:19:05But I'm going to try and just ignore it.

0:19:05 > 0:19:09Just pretend I was just coming up for a practice of a race run.

0:19:09 > 0:19:10Just try and ignore the people,

0:19:10 > 0:19:14and then enjoy it after I cross the line, hopefully.

0:19:14 > 0:19:17Lachlan lives just down the road in Fort William and he's been

0:19:17 > 0:19:22a spectator at ever World Cup race since it first came here in 2002.

0:19:22 > 0:19:24If it wasn't for his mother, though,

0:19:24 > 0:19:28he wouldn't be a competitive biker today.

0:19:28 > 0:19:31It was she who brought him here in the first place.

0:19:31 > 0:19:35I had to work at the first World Cup in the catering,

0:19:35 > 0:19:38because I work at Nevis Range in the winter and they drafted me in.

0:19:38 > 0:19:40He was just six.

0:19:40 > 0:19:44And after that time he was always keen on jumping through the air

0:19:44 > 0:19:47- on his bike. - SHE LAUGHS

0:19:47 > 0:19:50He made a bike that he could use on his trampoline

0:19:50 > 0:19:53and do all sorts of tricks and everything.

0:19:53 > 0:19:58And then when he got a little bit older, maybe about ten or something,

0:19:58 > 0:20:03he saved up and bought a bike that he could use on the downhill track.

0:20:03 > 0:20:05CAR HORN BEEPS

0:20:05 > 0:20:08Got a cheap second-hand bike, started doing the Scottish series.

0:20:08 > 0:20:12And then... Pretty terrible. Like, I was not good.

0:20:13 > 0:20:17But since then I've just done little bits of training, and then I got...

0:20:17 > 0:20:20I just sort of got more focused about trying to just do a bit better

0:20:20 > 0:20:22and a bit better every year.

0:20:22 > 0:20:28And then last year I had a fairly good season. I was going quite well.

0:20:28 > 0:20:29I was just...

0:20:29 > 0:20:34Won my first Scottish race. Placed in the top ten at the nationals.

0:20:34 > 0:20:38Didn't know if I was going to get a jersey for the World Cup or not,

0:20:38 > 0:20:40but...excitingly enough, I did get a jersey.

0:20:40 > 0:20:45So I'm racing, and that's just brilliant.

0:20:45 > 0:20:49It's like a wee childhood dream come true getting to go up there.

0:20:49 > 0:20:53Just be alongside all the top riders.

0:20:53 > 0:20:55It's just really exciting.

0:20:55 > 0:20:58And we'll find out how Lachlan gets on later in the programme.

0:20:58 > 0:21:03In spite of all the excitement and atmosphere that surrounds downhill

0:21:03 > 0:21:07racing, it's not as highly regarded as road biking or cross-country.

0:21:07 > 0:21:10This is something that the president of British Cycling,

0:21:10 > 0:21:13Brian Cookson, wants to change.

0:21:13 > 0:21:16Downhilling in particular is not in the Olympics,

0:21:16 > 0:21:19and so it is very difficult for us to channel any funding into it,

0:21:19 > 0:21:21because the majority of our funding comes from the lottery

0:21:21 > 0:21:24and it's specifically for the Olympic disciplines.

0:21:24 > 0:21:27One of the things that I'd really like to try to do is to push for

0:21:27 > 0:21:28downhilling to go into the Olympics,

0:21:28 > 0:21:31because it's an absolutely fantastic discipline.

0:21:31 > 0:21:34Certainly 4X as well is really exciting to watch, and so on.

0:21:34 > 0:21:37It's exactly the sort of thing we should be trying to get

0:21:37 > 0:21:38into the Olympic Games.

0:21:38 > 0:21:41We're seeing a lot of young Scottish riders in particular,

0:21:41 > 0:21:44but obviously young British riders too. We do well on a world stage.

0:21:44 > 0:21:47I guess the challenge for you guys is to keep encouraging that.

0:21:47 > 0:21:48Yeah, absolutely.

0:21:48 > 0:21:51That's one more reason why we'd like to see it in the Olympics.

0:21:51 > 0:21:52The more medals we can get, the better.

0:21:52 > 0:21:54That's going to be a long haul, I think,

0:21:54 > 0:21:56to get it in the Olympics, being realistic.

0:21:56 > 0:21:58But it's worth pursuing.

0:21:58 > 0:22:01Right now, though, it's time for the women's downhill,

0:22:01 > 0:22:04and it's the French riders to watch out for this time.

0:22:04 > 0:22:08Currently four of the top five are from France.

0:22:08 > 0:22:1222-year-old Myriam Nicole is ranked fourth in the world.

0:22:12 > 0:22:14She had a nasty crash in the qualifying heat,

0:22:14 > 0:22:18but amazingly still managed to finish in seventh place.

0:22:18 > 0:22:23My crash... I was hoping to finish in the top five, top four maybe.

0:22:23 > 0:22:24You're not wearing body armour.

0:22:24 > 0:22:28Is it normal that people are racing without body armour these days?

0:22:28 > 0:22:33I don't know if it's normal. But most of the top 80 are not racing with it.

0:22:33 > 0:22:39In France we have to, and I can feel like it's not very good,

0:22:39 > 0:22:44very comfy to ride with body armour. Like, you cannot move very well.

0:22:44 > 0:22:47You're not going too fast.

0:22:47 > 0:22:49Heading up the French entry

0:22:49 > 0:22:52is two-time world champion Emmeline Ragot.

0:22:52 > 0:22:55She came first last year here at Fort William.

0:22:55 > 0:22:57The good thing here is, there's a lot of people -

0:22:57 > 0:23:01people loving biking and mountain bikes, so it's pretty good.

0:23:01 > 0:23:03You can see, it's just the qualies,

0:23:03 > 0:23:06there are so many people on the track already, just cheering.

0:23:06 > 0:23:08It's full-on, it's cool.

0:23:08 > 0:23:12The people in Scotland seem to like and understand mountain biking.

0:23:12 > 0:23:15Yeah, you know, they are going out whatever the weather,

0:23:15 > 0:23:16if it's raining or not.

0:23:16 > 0:23:19They love the sport and that's cool to see.

0:23:19 > 0:23:24Last year, Emmeline was trumped at every round except this one

0:23:24 > 0:23:26by Britain's Rachel Atherton.

0:23:26 > 0:23:28And Rachel is now at the top of the rankings.

0:23:28 > 0:23:31Turned up yesterday, first day of the race,

0:23:31 > 0:23:33and saw the number one plate on my bike.

0:23:33 > 0:23:36And obviously I won the series last year...

0:23:36 > 0:23:40You don't really think about it until you turn up and that plate is there.

0:23:40 > 0:23:41It is good.

0:23:41 > 0:23:45You feel proud, and I guess it gives you confidence that you've done it

0:23:45 > 0:23:48before, so hopefully you won't be so far off the mark this year.

0:23:48 > 0:23:51How's the track looking this year? It's pretty dry.

0:23:51 > 0:23:54It's pretty gnarly. I think it's one of the roughest I've ever seen.

0:23:54 > 0:23:57I think for the girls, one of the biggest is the upper body strength.

0:23:57 > 0:24:01We're obviously not as strong as the guys and it's so physical.

0:24:01 > 0:24:05You're hitting bumps and hitting holes all the way down.

0:24:05 > 0:24:08And even though your legs are strong, your upper body is

0:24:08 > 0:24:12so tired that you can't hold yourself up to put that power down, and that's

0:24:12 > 0:24:14a really difficult thing to try

0:24:14 > 0:24:18and be strong for nearly six minutes when you're going that fast.

0:24:18 > 0:24:22It's definitely a challenge but it's what we love, isn't it?

0:24:23 > 0:24:26And there's another young British rider to watch out for -

0:24:26 > 0:24:30Manon Carpenter from South Wales is just 20 years old

0:24:30 > 0:24:33and already she's ranked six in the world.

0:24:33 > 0:24:36But she had a bit of a set back when she got here.

0:24:36 > 0:24:38I've had three practice runs this morning,

0:24:38 > 0:24:39I missed practice yesterday.

0:24:39 > 0:24:42Unfortunately, I got food poisoning.

0:24:42 > 0:24:44So that wasn't the best start to the weekend,

0:24:44 > 0:24:47but I've had some runs this morning, trying to get back up to speed.

0:24:47 > 0:24:49I feel pretty good. I know this track well.

0:24:49 > 0:24:51We had a national three weeks ago, so I don't feel like

0:24:51 > 0:24:56I've missed out too much, just trying to get some strength back.

0:24:56 > 0:24:59So the race is on for that top spot here in Fort William.

0:24:59 > 0:25:03Lining up at the start is French rider Myriam Nicole who had

0:25:03 > 0:25:06that painful crash during qualification.

0:25:07 > 0:25:11Myriam Nicole, who was the French national champion in 2011,

0:25:11 > 0:25:13started off very well,

0:25:13 > 0:25:17winning the first race of the French Cup in Lourdes.

0:25:18 > 0:25:22Sitting down a little bit in the boardwalk, though.

0:25:22 > 0:25:23But carrying lots of speed.

0:25:23 > 0:25:26Very smooth...for Myriam

0:25:26 > 0:25:29on one of the roughest courses of the year.

0:25:31 > 0:25:35Some of the European courses are a little shorter than this.

0:25:35 > 0:25:38A very slight looking figure, but phenomenal bike rider.

0:25:38 > 0:25:39Very committed.

0:25:41 > 0:25:44So Myriam just lining herself up,

0:25:44 > 0:25:45trying to remember the line.

0:25:45 > 0:25:49Trying to keep as smooth as possible as we head down into the woods.

0:25:49 > 0:25:52She was third here last year at Fort William.

0:25:54 > 0:25:55Oh, my goodness me!

0:25:55 > 0:25:59She's 7.35 up in the second split.

0:25:59 > 0:26:03She is absolutely making mincemeat of this course.

0:26:03 > 0:26:05This is really, really fast indeed.

0:26:05 > 0:26:08The French are always very strong here at Fort William.

0:26:08 > 0:26:11The French and the British, for that matter.

0:26:11 > 0:26:14All that's left are French riders and British riders.

0:26:14 > 0:26:18She looks a bit heavy legged, though. Now she puts the power on.

0:26:18 > 0:26:20Now she takes some air.

0:26:20 > 0:26:22This will be fast.

0:26:22 > 0:26:25She did look a little tired just before the arch there,

0:26:25 > 0:26:27but I'm sure she's got enough left in the pipes.

0:26:29 > 0:26:32They call her Pompon, Myriam Nicole

0:26:32 > 0:26:34This is going to be...

0:26:34 > 0:26:37a first place by five seconds!

0:26:37 > 0:26:405:24.29.

0:26:40 > 0:26:42Well, that is impressive.

0:26:42 > 0:26:44Very, very impressive.

0:26:49 > 0:26:53Morgane Charre, ex-world champion or world champion of 2012.

0:26:53 > 0:26:56She is now on the Fort William course.

0:26:56 > 0:26:58Came seventh here last year.

0:27:00 > 0:27:03She had a little bit of a slip and crash on the...

0:27:03 > 0:27:05on her qualifying run.

0:27:05 > 0:27:08But here she is. No elbow pads.

0:27:09 > 0:27:13Flying down this wearing the jersey of the world champion,

0:27:13 > 0:27:16as Morgane heads down into the berms.

0:27:20 > 0:27:22Morgane is there looking very,

0:27:22 > 0:27:24very quick in the upper part of the course.

0:27:24 > 0:27:27Oh, just took a big thump there off that rock, though.

0:27:27 > 0:27:30You can tell by the tape lining the course that the wind has

0:27:30 > 0:27:31picked up here.

0:27:32 > 0:27:35Here's Morgane Charre, the world champion.

0:27:37 > 0:27:39Told me yesterday that she was surprised to win

0:27:39 > 0:27:42the World Championship, but she is a brilliant racer,

0:27:42 > 0:27:44there's no doubt about that.

0:27:44 > 0:27:48Wearing the rainbow jersey and putting the effort in,

0:27:48 > 0:27:50in this bottom section of the course.

0:27:50 > 0:27:54She was almost three seconds down in the second split.

0:27:55 > 0:27:58But that is big air. She is flying down here.

0:27:58 > 0:28:01Won that World Championships back in September.

0:28:02 > 0:28:06She's had so many wins. Can she get inside? I don't think she can.

0:28:06 > 0:28:07It's 4.24 to beat.

0:28:08 > 0:28:12Oh, just outside! 5:25.49.

0:28:12 > 0:28:14Second place for the world champion.

0:28:14 > 0:28:17Look at that, she's got the shirtsleeves rolled up.

0:28:17 > 0:28:18She's hard as nails.

0:28:18 > 0:28:20ANNOUNCER SINGS HAPPY BIRTHDAY

0:28:20 > 0:28:22And it's her birthday.

0:28:24 > 0:28:28Manon Carpenter, the junior world champion in 2011.

0:28:28 > 0:28:31Currently ranked sixth as a senior rider.

0:28:31 > 0:28:33Had a bit of a bad start to her weekend here.

0:28:33 > 0:28:37Came down with food poisoning and missed the first training run.

0:28:37 > 0:28:43But at the age of 20, she is THE hope for British women's downhill.

0:28:43 > 0:28:47Absolutely flying here in the top part. Very strong, very committed.

0:28:48 > 0:28:52She's spent a great deal of the winter working on her upper body

0:28:52 > 0:28:54strength and sprint training, gym training,

0:28:54 > 0:28:59riding a road bike on the Welsh damp hills, all for this moment.

0:29:02 > 0:29:05So as Manon heads down towards the woods, this looks very smooth

0:29:05 > 0:29:06and good so far.

0:29:07 > 0:29:11And suddenly the atmosphere in Fort William

0:29:11 > 0:29:14has changed as Manon Carpenter goes through the second split with

0:29:14 > 0:29:18a green light, well inside the time.

0:29:18 > 0:29:22This incredible young rider, just 20 years old,

0:29:22 > 0:29:28junior world champion in 2011 and truly, truly brilliant she is too.

0:29:28 > 0:29:31Oh, she almost made a mistake there though.

0:29:31 > 0:29:33That was a very, very heavy landing.

0:29:33 > 0:29:34Just keep it clean, Manon.

0:29:34 > 0:29:38Just keep it smooth and batter on down to the finish

0:29:38 > 0:29:40and let the crowd bring you in.

0:29:40 > 0:29:43Wow, what a noise! What a noise!

0:29:44 > 0:29:47All eyes on the clock, it's 5:24 to beat.

0:29:47 > 0:29:49Oh, she's going to smash it.

0:29:49 > 0:29:51She is going to smash it!

0:29:51 > 0:29:53Oh, my goodness me.

0:29:53 > 0:29:565:18.98.

0:29:56 > 0:29:57Woo!

0:29:57 > 0:30:00Yes, indeedy. That is amazing.

0:30:00 > 0:30:03That is truly sensational.

0:30:03 > 0:30:07More than five seconds inside Myriam Nicole, and that is no mean feat.

0:30:11 > 0:30:16This is Emmeline Ragot who won here last year, came first in 2012.

0:30:16 > 0:30:19She is the French national champion.

0:30:19 > 0:30:22Currently ranked number two in the world.

0:30:23 > 0:30:26Emmeline is just starting this at A pace.

0:30:28 > 0:30:32She came quite well behind Rachel on the qualifier,

0:30:32 > 0:30:34but this is the battle that counts for these two.

0:30:34 > 0:30:38She looks very smooth in the upper part of the course.

0:30:38 > 0:30:41And the girls taking quite tight lines in some of these corners

0:30:41 > 0:30:44rather than slightly the wider male line, which is

0:30:44 > 0:30:46much tougher and harder.

0:30:46 > 0:30:50In fact, there's a real difference between the top two or three women

0:30:50 > 0:30:52and then the following group.

0:30:52 > 0:30:56As Emmeline is just flying down there towards the forest.

0:30:59 > 0:31:03Emmeline Ragot has been world champion on two occasions,

0:31:03 > 0:31:07but I don't think she's going to be champion in Fort William this year.

0:31:07 > 0:31:12She's over three seconds down on Manon Carpenter at the second split.

0:31:12 > 0:31:16Unless she can do something incredible on the bottom section...

0:31:16 > 0:31:18She is smoother than Carpenter on this section, though.

0:31:18 > 0:31:19There's no doubt about that.

0:31:19 > 0:31:23Carpenter had a big heavy landing before she fell through the arch.

0:31:25 > 0:31:26Ragot.

0:31:26 > 0:31:29She has struggled a little on World Cup,

0:31:29 > 0:31:31but brilliant at World Championships.

0:31:31 > 0:31:33Let's see what she's got.

0:31:33 > 0:31:34I don't think she'll be inside.

0:31:34 > 0:31:37She is not going to be inside Manon Carpenter,

0:31:37 > 0:31:39but it could be a podium finish.

0:31:39 > 0:31:41It's second. My goodness.

0:31:41 > 0:31:465:20.21 for Emmeline Ragot.

0:31:46 > 0:31:48She goes into second place.

0:31:48 > 0:31:51Only one person left on the hill,

0:31:51 > 0:31:53and that person has never yet won in Fort William,

0:31:53 > 0:31:56the current World Cup Champion, Rachel Atherton.

0:31:59 > 0:32:02Currently ranked number one in the world.

0:32:04 > 0:32:08She is the best downhill rider of her generation - Rachel Atherton.

0:32:10 > 0:32:14Absolutely flying on the top part. Just taking a little seat there.

0:32:14 > 0:32:16Touches the wall, lines up for this,

0:32:16 > 0:32:20so Rachel is off the smooth section into the tough section.

0:32:20 > 0:32:22A huge reception from the crowd here.

0:32:24 > 0:32:26One of the stars of downhill riding.

0:32:26 > 0:32:30She just slipped slightly there, had to put her foot back in the pedal.

0:32:30 > 0:32:31Very, very dry today.

0:32:32 > 0:32:34You have to get absolutely on line.

0:32:34 > 0:32:37CHEERING

0:32:40 > 0:32:43Straight down, and Rachel heads towards the forest at speed.

0:32:45 > 0:32:48Well, Rachel Atherton has finished second

0:32:48 > 0:32:50far too many times for her liking,

0:32:50 > 0:32:52but I'll tell you something right now -

0:32:52 > 0:32:54she's going to finish first today.

0:32:54 > 0:32:56Keep it smooth, keep it simple.

0:32:56 > 0:33:00Almost seven-and-a-half seconds inside.

0:33:00 > 0:33:02She won the World Cup last year.

0:33:02 > 0:33:05She's never ever won at Fort William.

0:33:05 > 0:33:07It's something that's really annoyed her through the years.

0:33:07 > 0:33:10She's been so close, but my goodness

0:33:10 > 0:33:12she is going to be miles ahead.

0:33:12 > 0:33:14CHEERING

0:33:14 > 0:33:19I think that says it all. Fort William crowd welcome her in.

0:33:19 > 0:33:23She could roll it down on a back wheel and still be inside.

0:33:23 > 0:33:25My goodness. Look at this!

0:33:27 > 0:33:29Well, that is the...

0:33:29 > 0:33:33performance of a great, great champion.

0:33:33 > 0:33:37Ten seconds inside Manon Carpenter.

0:33:37 > 0:33:41And at last for Rachel Atherton!

0:33:41 > 0:33:43She wins it.

0:33:43 > 0:33:45It's the home race for her.

0:33:45 > 0:33:50My goodness me, she's a happy, happy girl. What a great champion.

0:33:52 > 0:33:54And confirmation of those results -

0:33:54 > 0:33:58Last year's winner Emmeline Ragot from France came in third with

0:33:58 > 0:34:015 minutes 20.22 seconds.

0:34:01 > 0:34:04The young British rider Manon Carpenter took second place

0:34:04 > 0:34:06in 5:18.99.

0:34:06 > 0:34:12And over ten seconds faster with a time of 5:08.85,

0:34:12 > 0:34:15winning her first ever World Cup at Fort William,

0:34:15 > 0:34:16was Rachel Atherton.

0:34:16 > 0:34:18Well, I was nervous.

0:34:18 > 0:34:22Straight off the line I was messy and, like, I was slipping.

0:34:22 > 0:34:25I thought... All the way down, I thought, "Pull yourself together.

0:34:25 > 0:34:26"You've thrown it away."

0:34:26 > 0:34:29I just couldn't get my line right, just a little bit off.

0:34:29 > 0:34:33Sometimes you have to race over the edge, and luckily I stayed on.

0:34:33 > 0:34:36The crowd are, all the way down, shouting your name

0:34:36 > 0:34:38and I could really hear it this year.

0:34:38 > 0:34:40Normally you blank it out, but this year I was like...

0:34:40 > 0:34:45It was really in my head and I was like, "I've got to dig deep here."

0:34:45 > 0:34:47I can't believe it.

0:34:47 > 0:34:50So what an amazing result there for the British women.

0:34:50 > 0:34:53Manon Carpenter in second place, Rachel Atherton in first.

0:34:53 > 0:34:55We're going to come back to the men's downhill

0:34:55 > 0:34:56in just a few moments,

0:34:56 > 0:34:59but before that we're going to go for a wild Scottish walk

0:34:59 > 0:35:00with Cameron McNeish.

0:35:09 > 0:35:12I'm heading for Garbh Bheinn of Ardgour.

0:35:12 > 0:35:16The best way of reaching it is by ferry across Loch Linnhe,

0:35:16 > 0:35:19which effectively gives the area

0:35:19 > 0:35:21all the romance and excitement

0:35:21 > 0:35:24and feeling of isolation of a Scottish island.

0:35:32 > 0:35:36There's a number of routes up Garbh Bheinn of Ardgour,

0:35:36 > 0:35:39including this one up Glen Ure.

0:35:39 > 0:35:42And away back in 1897, this was the route taken

0:35:42 > 0:35:45when two stalwarts of the Scottish mountaineering club,

0:35:45 > 0:35:49W H Bell and J Brown came to climb the great ridge,

0:35:49 > 0:35:52one of the great rock climbs on Garbh Bheinn.

0:35:52 > 0:35:55And they've quite a nice description of the walk up the glen here.

0:35:55 > 0:35:58This is what they said...

0:35:58 > 0:36:01"Bit by bit, Garbh Bheinn creeps into view

0:36:01 > 0:36:04"forming by the gradual addition of ridge to choire,

0:36:04 > 0:36:05"and crag to buttress.

0:36:05 > 0:36:09"One of the boldest pictures of mountain grandeur

0:36:09 > 0:36:10"to be seen on the mainland."

0:36:12 > 0:36:16But it's the words of another mountaineering pioneer that

0:36:16 > 0:36:18I seem to remember best.

0:36:19 > 0:36:23In 1904, Charles Inglis Clark described Glen Ure,

0:36:23 > 0:36:27"A swampy ground alternating with bog."

0:36:27 > 0:36:30So because of that, I think I'll take a different route.

0:36:38 > 0:36:41On the entire length of this ridge, you don't

0:36:41 > 0:36:45actually have to touch rock at any time. You can walk right up it.

0:36:45 > 0:36:49But now and again, if, like me, you like a wee bit of scrambling,

0:36:49 > 0:36:51when you get a wee section like this,

0:36:51 > 0:36:53you just can't resist a wee climb.

0:37:07 > 0:37:10There are three main mountains in the Ardgour area -

0:37:10 > 0:37:12Sgurr Dhomhnuill,

0:37:12 > 0:37:13Sgurr Ghiubhsachain

0:37:13 > 0:37:16and Garbh Bheinn. All three of them are Corbetts.

0:37:16 > 0:37:21And although it's not the highest at 885 metres, I think

0:37:21 > 0:37:23Garbh Bheinn is by far the finest.

0:37:38 > 0:37:40You know, it's an extraordinary thing,

0:37:40 > 0:37:45but this area of Ardgour and the neighbouring area of Moidart and

0:37:45 > 0:37:47the whole of the Ardnamurchan Peninsula

0:37:47 > 0:37:51have some of the wildest areas in Scotland.

0:37:51 > 0:37:55And yet they're probably the least trodden hills in Scotland.

0:37:55 > 0:37:59And I think that's largely due to this big expanse behind me.

0:37:59 > 0:38:01This big expanse of Loch Linnhe.

0:38:01 > 0:38:04People look across from the other side and think,

0:38:04 > 0:38:07"Oh, that's too remote, too far away."

0:38:07 > 0:38:10And yet it's really only a short ferry ride across the loch.

0:38:23 > 0:38:28Well, that's me at the top of the Sron a' Garbh Choire Bhig ridge.

0:38:28 > 0:38:31And from here it's just a short descent to the Bealloch,

0:38:31 > 0:38:33and then a long rocky climb up to the summit.

0:38:33 > 0:38:37In misty weather, there's a lot of false summits

0:38:37 > 0:38:40and it can be quite difficult navigation wise.

0:38:40 > 0:38:43But today it should be a doddle. It's lovely and clear and, in fact,

0:38:43 > 0:38:45I can see the summit cairn from here,

0:38:45 > 0:38:48perched right on the edge of that cliff in front of me.

0:39:03 > 0:39:07You know, there's something about this big mountain that...

0:39:07 > 0:39:09almost evokes the spirit of those early

0:39:09 > 0:39:13Scottish Mountaineering Club members of the late 19th century.

0:39:13 > 0:39:15And particularly Bell and Brown. I can almost see them

0:39:15 > 0:39:19wandering up Glen Ure here, looking up the line of the great ridge and

0:39:19 > 0:39:21saying, "Let's have a go at that, let's tackle that."

0:39:21 > 0:39:24And just working their way up, exploring, navigating,

0:39:24 > 0:39:27feeling their way up this 1,000-foot climb to the summit.

0:39:28 > 0:39:31Climbers don't seem to do that any more.

0:39:31 > 0:39:33Climbing has changed so much and, to me,

0:39:33 > 0:39:37we've kind of lost that exploratory feel of the early pioneers.

0:39:37 > 0:39:39And that's why I like to come to a mountain like this.

0:39:39 > 0:39:42And I look at this big crag here, and I'm pretty convinced

0:39:42 > 0:39:47if it was 1,500ft lower, it would be covered in rock-climbing routes.

0:40:01 > 0:40:05Here we are at the summit of Garbh Bheinn of Ardgour.

0:40:05 > 0:40:09885 metres above the waters of Loch Linnhe.

0:40:10 > 0:40:15You know, sometimes you just become convinced that a mountain is

0:40:15 > 0:40:16blessing you.

0:40:16 > 0:40:19And I feel that this mountain has richly blessed me today.

0:40:22 > 0:40:25Oh, and there's points of reference all round.

0:40:25 > 0:40:29I can see Ben Nevis, but I can see all the Black Mount

0:40:29 > 0:40:32and Glen Creran hills right down to Cruachan.

0:40:32 > 0:40:36Over here, Ben More of Mull,

0:40:36 > 0:40:41and away behind me in this mass of mountains of Moidart and Noidart,

0:40:41 > 0:40:46and I'm looking away up to the western seaboard of Scotland.

0:40:46 > 0:40:47It's wonderful.

0:40:47 > 0:40:51You know, I've just spent the last four weeks abroad -

0:40:51 > 0:40:54three weeks cycling through France from the English Channel to the

0:40:54 > 0:40:59Mediterranean, and a week hill walking in Crete in Greece. And...

0:40:59 > 0:41:01Well, you know what I'm going to say.

0:41:01 > 0:41:06There's nowhere in the world can compete with this kind of landscape.

0:41:07 > 0:41:12And it's just wonderful to sit up here and behold it all.

0:41:25 > 0:41:28Welcome back to the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup from Fort William.

0:41:28 > 0:41:31It's almost time for the men's downhill,

0:41:31 > 0:41:34but this year there's a separate race for the under-23s,

0:41:34 > 0:41:38and a chance for local rider Lachlan Blair to show what he's made of.

0:41:38 > 0:41:41My goal for this weekend is to break the five minutes.

0:41:41 > 0:41:43My most recent time was a 5:11.

0:41:43 > 0:41:46I think that's my best race time I've had here.

0:41:46 > 0:41:48As a kid you were standing here cheering people.

0:41:48 > 0:41:51How will it be to be on the other side of the fence?

0:41:51 > 0:41:52Do you think you'll hear them?

0:41:52 > 0:41:54How much difference will that make to your race?

0:41:54 > 0:41:56I think it will...it will help.

0:41:56 > 0:41:58It'll definitely be noticeable.

0:41:58 > 0:42:01Because last year I was up rider marshalling,

0:42:01 > 0:42:03so you just ride down, sweep the course.

0:42:03 > 0:42:05And even then people are cheering.

0:42:05 > 0:42:08And it's really noticeable, it feels like...

0:42:08 > 0:42:11It's almost like a wall of sound. It's just crazy.

0:42:11 > 0:42:13It makes you want to go fast.

0:42:13 > 0:42:17As a local lad, Lachlan knows this course well, but he's

0:42:17 > 0:42:22a stranger to the tension only a World Cup competition can bring.

0:42:22 > 0:42:26Former world champion Greg Minnaar reckons this is a hard race

0:42:26 > 0:42:27to start off with.

0:42:27 > 0:42:31- It's one of the toughest we've got. - Is it?- Yeah.- What are the rest like?

0:42:31 > 0:42:33Not as tough as that. Just carry speed.

0:42:33 > 0:42:36Brake early and roll out of those corners fast.

0:42:36 > 0:42:38That's where you're going to make your time here.

0:42:38 > 0:42:40It's tons of corners and it's all fast.

0:42:40 > 0:42:42So the faster you can come out of them,

0:42:42 > 0:42:44the better off you'll be.

0:42:44 > 0:42:47Don't worry about lines, just go fast. That's what you've got to do.

0:42:47 > 0:42:49It's the fastest man wins. It's easy.

0:42:49 > 0:42:53So at the top of the course, this is the moment Lachlan's been waiting

0:42:53 > 0:42:57for since he watched his very first downhill race as a wee lad of six.

0:42:57 > 0:43:00Looking good as he hurtles down this rough track, though.

0:43:00 > 0:43:03He's already ridden here on so many occasions

0:43:03 > 0:43:06and is aiming for a sub-five minute time.

0:43:06 > 0:43:07Never managed it before,

0:43:07 > 0:43:11but he says today for him it's actually much smoother than normal.

0:43:12 > 0:43:14Oh, what's happened?

0:43:14 > 0:43:17Oh, my goodness, looks like he's got a blown tyre!

0:43:17 > 0:43:19That is a disaster for this young man.

0:43:19 > 0:43:23It's all over for Lachlan - for this year at least.

0:43:23 > 0:43:25I was going well at the top split,

0:43:25 > 0:43:28and then I must have just hit a rock somewhere.

0:43:28 > 0:43:29Tyre went down.

0:43:29 > 0:43:33A little bit of loud shouting going on,

0:43:33 > 0:43:35but I sort of rolled down from there.

0:43:35 > 0:43:37It's something that can happen, obviously,

0:43:37 > 0:43:40there's nothing you can do about it. How frustrating,

0:43:40 > 0:43:42given all the build up that had come along to Fort William?

0:43:42 > 0:43:45Super frustrating, really. I don't know how to explain it.

0:43:45 > 0:43:47It's just a bit annoying.

0:43:48 > 0:43:51Now it's almost time for the elite to face their high speed charge

0:43:51 > 0:43:53down the mountain.

0:43:53 > 0:43:56With a strong field from around the world, the men's competition

0:43:56 > 0:43:59is set to be as fierce as ever.

0:43:59 > 0:44:00I really enjoy racing here.

0:44:00 > 0:44:03It's real physical and pretty much the whole way down

0:44:03 > 0:44:07you can hear fans cheering. And then coming into that finish...

0:44:07 > 0:44:09The finish line jump is amazing, it's...

0:44:09 > 0:44:12I don't know, it's probably one of the best feelings I've ever had,

0:44:12 > 0:44:15just everyone screaming at you and cheering you on,

0:44:15 > 0:44:18making you go faster. It's cool.

0:44:18 > 0:44:21Brook MacDonald from New Zealand is ranked sixth,

0:44:21 > 0:44:25but today just fractions of a second separate the fastest riders.

0:44:25 > 0:44:29Currently fourth in the world is Steve Smith from Canada.

0:44:29 > 0:44:32Those margins are tight, and really it's anybody's game to win.

0:44:32 > 0:44:34It's just having that perfect run.

0:44:34 > 0:44:37It's not just being the most ballsy rider,

0:44:37 > 0:44:40it's a list of everything you've got to put together.

0:44:40 > 0:44:45The list is massive, and some of the guys in the top five have had

0:44:45 > 0:44:48that figured out for years, so they get here prepared.

0:44:48 > 0:44:50I feel like I'm just getting there now,

0:44:50 > 0:44:53and hopefully can continue being in that top five.

0:44:53 > 0:44:56Steve Smith and Brook MacDonald are up against some strong

0:44:56 > 0:44:59British competition, including former world champion,

0:44:59 > 0:45:0122-year-old Danny Hart.

0:45:01 > 0:45:04He's come in second here at Fort William,

0:45:04 > 0:45:06but never yet managed the top spot.

0:45:06 > 0:45:09To win my first World Cup here in Fort William would be

0:45:09 > 0:45:10like a dream come true.

0:45:13 > 0:45:16I hope I can get that monkey off my back.

0:45:16 > 0:45:17In terms of the UCI Tour,

0:45:17 > 0:45:20this is really the home event for British riders.

0:45:20 > 0:45:24Is there a real sense of, kind of, feeling you are on home territory?

0:45:24 > 0:45:27Well, yeah. I have all my family here. I stop in the camper.

0:45:27 > 0:45:32It's just like we used to do Nationals when I was little, so...

0:45:32 > 0:45:34It's just like that, but with a bigger race.

0:45:34 > 0:45:37Leading the field, not just for the Brits but currently

0:45:37 > 0:45:42at the top of the world rankings, is another of the Atherton clan - Gee.

0:45:42 > 0:45:44So what's the secret of his success?

0:45:44 > 0:45:47You really have to attack from the word go,

0:45:47 > 0:45:51but at the same time you do have to be able to have that energy to

0:45:51 > 0:45:55ride the technical stuff with the same speed you were in practice

0:45:55 > 0:45:57and in training.

0:45:57 > 0:46:01You have to make sure you really can link all the sections together.

0:46:01 > 0:46:03If you're stalling and, kind of,

0:46:03 > 0:46:06doing it in a too stop-start fashion, then you waste a lot of energy,

0:46:06 > 0:46:10so it's all about keeping it smooth, keeping that speed up

0:46:10 > 0:46:11and kind of carrying momentum

0:46:11 > 0:46:14through the whole course, top to bottom.

0:46:14 > 0:46:18The Brits are at the forefront of downhill mountain biking,

0:46:18 > 0:46:22but Scottish riders haven't recently done too well on the world scene.

0:46:22 > 0:46:24But that could be about to change.

0:46:24 > 0:46:27Another young biker, Greg Williamson from Inverness,

0:46:27 > 0:46:30has just joined one of the big teams.

0:46:30 > 0:46:33It's just a bit of a dream come true and I'm really happy to be here

0:46:33 > 0:46:36at my home race at Fort William with a new team.

0:46:36 > 0:46:39After racing the last few years privately,

0:46:39 > 0:46:42it's really pretty special now for me, so I'm excited.

0:46:42 > 0:46:45I believe you have other reasons to celebrate today as well.

0:46:45 > 0:46:46Absolutely, yeah.

0:46:46 > 0:46:50It's my 21st birthday today, so I couldn't ask for much more, really.

0:46:50 > 0:46:54And as Greg Williamson lines up for the start of his run,

0:46:54 > 0:46:57it's a chance for him to shine here at Fort William.

0:46:58 > 0:46:59So Greg Williamson,

0:46:59 > 0:47:03a local boy training here all the time, knows the course very well.

0:47:04 > 0:47:10Done pretty well here to get into the top 25 in qualifying.

0:47:12 > 0:47:15Oh, just a hand slipped off the brake there.

0:47:17 > 0:47:19But Greg's looking good.

0:47:20 > 0:47:22Looking very good indeed.

0:47:22 > 0:47:25This is fantastic as he comes towards the Scotland Arch.

0:47:25 > 0:47:27Greg's got the fastest time so far.

0:47:27 > 0:47:31It's a great performance from this young rider from Inverness.

0:47:31 > 0:47:32He really loves riding here

0:47:32 > 0:47:36and just listen to the crowd willing him down the slope.

0:47:36 > 0:47:40They know they're watching the new star of Scottish downhill cycling.

0:47:40 > 0:47:42Crosses the line. 4:42.1

0:47:42 > 0:47:45and that puts him into first place.

0:47:45 > 0:47:49Right now he's the new leader of the UCI World Cup.

0:47:50 > 0:47:53But, of course, the faster riders are still to come.

0:47:57 > 0:47:59On the course now is the national champion of New Zealand -

0:47:59 > 0:48:01Brook MacDonald.

0:48:01 > 0:48:04Ranked sixth in the world, came third here in 2011.

0:48:04 > 0:48:06Absolutely loves it.

0:48:06 > 0:48:09One of his favourite courses. Did very well.

0:48:09 > 0:48:12Placed in the top six during qualification.

0:48:12 > 0:48:14Tucking down there, trying to keep out of the wind,

0:48:14 > 0:48:18trying to get the most out of this upper part of the course.

0:48:18 > 0:48:21So Brook is flying through the top part of this,

0:48:21 > 0:48:23just needs to pick the bike up over there.

0:48:23 > 0:48:26Oh, just lost the front end, came a bit high up.

0:48:27 > 0:48:29Recovered very, very quickly.

0:48:29 > 0:48:31Very lively-looking suspension on his bike as he comes

0:48:31 > 0:48:32down into the trees.

0:48:34 > 0:48:36Brook MacDonald looking pretty fast.

0:48:36 > 0:48:40Seven-tenths of a second behind Sam Hill. Absolutely flying.

0:48:40 > 0:48:44They call him The Bulldog. And my goodness, he's got the head

0:48:44 > 0:48:48down, he's got the shoulders up, and he's putting on the power.

0:48:48 > 0:48:52This New Zealander, 22 years old, sixth in the world ranking,

0:48:52 > 0:48:55only been racing for three years.

0:48:55 > 0:48:59The former junior world champion is looking like

0:48:59 > 0:49:03he's putting on the afterburners as he flies down here.

0:49:03 > 0:49:05Racing for Trek World Racing Team.

0:49:05 > 0:49:07It's going to be tight.

0:49:07 > 0:49:11Oh, he's inside! What a ride!

0:49:11 > 0:49:15It wasn't tight, it was 4:37.

0:49:15 > 0:49:17That is incredible.

0:49:19 > 0:49:21What a run from Brook MacDonald.

0:49:23 > 0:49:25He said his favourite thing about Fort William was

0:49:25 > 0:49:29coming into the arena and hearing the crowd of spectators screaming.

0:49:29 > 0:49:33And he certainly heard it there as he crossed the line in first place.

0:49:37 > 0:49:42Canadian Steve Smith, ranked fourth in the world and absolutely

0:49:42 > 0:49:46loves the roughest, gnarliest, bumpy courses on the circuit.

0:49:46 > 0:49:49Flying down here at incredible speed.

0:49:49 > 0:49:51It's all about the commitment.

0:49:51 > 0:49:56So as Steve comes down into the rock garden off the wood section,

0:49:56 > 0:50:00he is pretty much on line. Yes, he took a nice outside line there.

0:50:00 > 0:50:02Looks very smooth so far.

0:50:02 > 0:50:05Did well in qualification to come up here in the top ten.

0:50:05 > 0:50:08It's a technical sport, you've got to remember the line.

0:50:10 > 0:50:13As Steve skips down over the rocks, it's a good smooth ride

0:50:13 > 0:50:15so far in the top here.

0:50:17 > 0:50:18Just outside...

0:50:18 > 0:50:220.47 outside the time of Brook MacDonald.

0:50:22 > 0:50:25We saw the work that Brook MacDonald put in at the bottom section

0:50:25 > 0:50:28of the course. Can the Canadian do the same?

0:50:31 > 0:50:34He will hear the crowd as he approaches the arch.

0:50:36 > 0:50:38And they will draw him in all the way to the line.

0:50:40 > 0:50:41But has he'd done enough?

0:50:41 > 0:50:44Brook MacDonald really was pedalling as hard as he possibly could,

0:50:44 > 0:50:46and so is Smith.

0:50:46 > 0:50:47It's going to be close.

0:50:47 > 0:50:50Oh! Just outside.

0:50:50 > 0:50:524:38.07.

0:50:52 > 0:50:56Well, that was another very, very impressive ride from the Canadian.

0:50:58 > 0:51:03Stevie Smith in second and Brook MacDonald in the lead.

0:51:06 > 0:51:09Chasing Brook MacDonald, who currently sits in the hot seat,

0:51:09 > 0:51:13is Sam Blenkinsop, another rider from New Zealand.

0:51:13 > 0:51:16Ranked 18 in the word.

0:51:16 > 0:51:18Onto the boardwalk. Pedalling hard.

0:51:19 > 0:51:23So Sam, who is a strong favourite here with the crowd...

0:51:24 > 0:51:27Very good technical rider.

0:51:27 > 0:51:31Lacks a little bit of the sprinting speed maybe on the lower part

0:51:31 > 0:51:33of the course, but very, very good here.

0:51:33 > 0:51:35Taking a tight line there.

0:51:36 > 0:51:39And as Sam drops down into the toughest

0:51:39 > 0:51:42and biggest of the rock drops, he's looking pretty good.

0:51:42 > 0:51:44A little bit wobbly over that section,

0:51:44 > 0:51:47but down into the trees with confidence.

0:51:47 > 0:51:51Sam Blenkinsop looking good, four-tenths of a second down.

0:51:51 > 0:51:54Won the World Cup in 2008 in Schladming.

0:51:54 > 0:51:56Never won here at Fort William, though.

0:51:56 > 0:51:59In fact, we've never had a New Zealander

0:51:59 > 0:52:02at the top of the podium at Fort William ever,

0:52:02 > 0:52:04but Sam Blenkinsop is giving himself

0:52:04 > 0:52:06a brilliant, brilliant chance.

0:52:06 > 0:52:08Oh, my goodness.

0:52:09 > 0:52:12He puts a bit of style on as well towards the end.

0:52:12 > 0:52:16Can he make up that half second? Right, Sam, stop showing off.

0:52:16 > 0:52:19Just get to the line. It's very close!

0:52:19 > 0:52:20Oh! Finishes in third.

0:52:20 > 0:52:25Now, had he not done the big tailwhip at the top,

0:52:25 > 0:52:27maybe he would have been on the top of the podium there.

0:52:27 > 0:52:30But that is still very, very impressive indeed.

0:52:30 > 0:52:33And we only have two more riders, and they're both British -

0:52:33 > 0:52:36Danny Hart and Gee Atherton.

0:52:38 > 0:52:40On the course now

0:52:40 > 0:52:44is the number one ranked rider in the world at the moment -

0:52:44 > 0:52:46Britain's Gee Atherton.

0:52:46 > 0:52:52The 2010 Downhill World Cup champion has won 4X, downhill, BMX.

0:52:52 > 0:52:57He is truly one of the best riders in the world.

0:52:57 > 0:53:01He placed third in Fort William in 2012.

0:53:01 > 0:53:03Gee is going to fly down this.

0:53:05 > 0:53:08And it's all about the margins at the top end of this game.

0:53:08 > 0:53:12One of Gee's extraordinary talents is the ability to push through pain.

0:53:12 > 0:53:15He had some horrible crashes last year and has recovered from injury

0:53:15 > 0:53:19well to be very competitive again here in Fort William.

0:53:19 > 0:53:22Gee Atherton, one of the most progressive mountain bikers

0:53:22 > 0:53:25of all time, won his first Downhill World Cup in 2004,

0:53:25 > 0:53:27aged just 19.

0:53:27 > 0:53:29He's finished in the top five of the Downhill World Series

0:53:29 > 0:53:30every year since.

0:53:32 > 0:53:35He's been Downhill World Champion, Downhill World Cup Series Champion,

0:53:35 > 0:53:40Downhill European Champion and twice British National Champion.

0:53:40 > 0:53:46And he is miles inside Brook MacDonald at the second split.

0:53:47 > 0:53:50He loves coming to Fort William, it's his home track.

0:53:50 > 0:53:55Remember, his sister won here for the first time ever earlier today.

0:53:55 > 0:53:59Can it be an Atherton at the top of the podium in the men's

0:53:59 > 0:54:01downhill and the women's downhill?

0:54:01 > 0:54:03RAUCOUS CHEERING

0:54:03 > 0:54:06That noise says it all. They love him here at Fort William.

0:54:08 > 0:54:12He is such a brilliant competitor, and he's powering on.

0:54:12 > 0:54:13Look at that time.

0:54:13 > 0:54:16Oh, my goodness me!

0:54:16 > 0:54:194:36.71.

0:54:19 > 0:54:22Absolutely smashed it there.

0:54:22 > 0:54:25The top section of the course he was loose

0:54:25 > 0:54:27because he was trying to go so fast.

0:54:27 > 0:54:31The middle section he kept it together, kept the power on.

0:54:31 > 0:54:35And over the bottom section there was nobody to touch him.

0:54:35 > 0:54:37That is an astonishing ride.

0:54:37 > 0:54:41First place for Gee Atherton, and only one man can beat him.

0:54:41 > 0:54:42And that man is Danny Hart.

0:54:44 > 0:54:48So finally relieved from the waiting, it's Danny Hart.

0:54:48 > 0:54:50Ex-world champion from 2011

0:54:50 > 0:54:54and second place rider here last year.

0:54:54 > 0:54:59Absolutely flies through this.

0:54:59 > 0:55:02A typical training week - he's on his bike, in the gym,

0:55:02 > 0:55:05downhill, now riding motocross.

0:55:05 > 0:55:08Danny Hart is everything on two wheels.

0:55:09 > 0:55:10So Danny is chasing this.

0:55:12 > 0:55:15Wanting to improve on his second, a nice outside line.

0:55:15 > 0:55:19Only a couple of riders have taken that line. So here is Danny.

0:55:19 > 0:55:23Oh, just got slightly snagged up there on that corner.

0:55:23 > 0:55:25But looking good.

0:55:25 > 0:55:28Danny just lost it a little bit there as he comes down

0:55:28 > 0:55:30into the line into the trees.

0:55:32 > 0:55:36Well, I think it's fair to say that Danny Hart is working

0:55:36 > 0:55:39incredibly hard to beat Gee Atherton.

0:55:39 > 0:55:41My goodness.

0:55:41 > 0:55:47Such an incredible performer. Won the World Championship in 2011.

0:55:48 > 0:55:51Oh, he came out the forest section there

0:55:51 > 0:55:54and did a little wheelie over the tabletop there!

0:55:55 > 0:55:59He is 1.2 down at the second split, but he has got the power,

0:55:59 > 0:56:04he has got the fitness, and he has certainly got the spirit.

0:56:04 > 0:56:06He's a man who loves to win.

0:56:06 > 0:56:10Gee Atherton does too, but this guy does not give up.

0:56:10 > 0:56:11He's putting it on.

0:56:13 > 0:56:16Let's have a look and see what they're saying.

0:56:16 > 0:56:20They're saying, "Welcome to Fort William, Danny Hart.

0:56:20 > 0:56:22"Let's see what you can do."

0:56:22 > 0:56:26And what he's doing is working incredibly hard. Put the power on.

0:56:26 > 0:56:27Is it enough?

0:56:29 > 0:56:31Oh, my goodness. It's not.

0:56:31 > 0:56:33He lost a lot in the second half of the course.

0:56:34 > 0:56:39The World Cup winner, though, for this year is Gee Atherton.

0:56:39 > 0:56:43It's an Atherton at the top of the podium for the men's

0:56:43 > 0:56:47and the women's race, and that's how much it means to him.

0:56:47 > 0:56:53Big hugs there for Gee Atherton, with a smile as wide as Lochaber.

0:56:53 > 0:56:57And there's Rachel giving him a big hug as well.

0:56:57 > 0:56:59Brother and sister - champions.

0:57:00 > 0:57:03- HE LAUGHS - That's a lovely sight.

0:57:03 > 0:57:07And that's what the fans at Fort William wanted to see.

0:57:07 > 0:57:09So, the final results looked like this -

0:57:09 > 0:57:13the young Scottish rider Greg Williamson had a fantastic run,

0:57:13 > 0:57:18coming in 10th with a time of 4 minutes 42.13.

0:57:18 > 0:57:22Danny Hart managed seventh place with 4:39.36.

0:57:22 > 0:57:27In third, Canadian Steve Smith's time was 4:38.07.

0:57:27 > 0:57:32New Zealand's Brook MacDonald took second in 4:37.85.

0:57:32 > 0:57:37But out in the lead with at time of 4:36.71 was Britain's Gee Atherton.

0:57:39 > 0:57:40I'm stuck for words.

0:57:40 > 0:57:43An absolutely amazing day. It doesn't get better than this.

0:57:43 > 0:57:45Rachel winning as well. Just a great day for the family.

0:57:45 > 0:57:49Yeah, incredible. I mean, Rachel's been riding well all week.

0:57:49 > 0:57:51I was listening to her run earlier.

0:57:51 > 0:57:54I didn't come and watch, I was trying to stay focused.

0:57:54 > 0:57:57To go 1, 1, with my sister is incredible.

0:57:57 > 0:57:58What does it mean to you

0:57:58 > 0:58:01to have another top of the podium at Fort William?
