1:51:34 > 1:51:37Hello and welcome to Wembley Stadium for FA Cup Rewind.

1:51:37 > 1:51:39And for this dip into the BBC's sport archives,

1:51:39 > 1:51:41we're going back to 1990.

1:51:44 > 1:51:46Number two.

1:51:46 > 1:51:47Manchester United...

1:51:52 > 1:51:54And number one.

1:51:54 > 1:51:56..will play...Crystal Palace.

1:51:56 > 1:52:00- And that concludes the draw for the FA Cup Final. - LAUGHTER

1:52:22 > 1:52:25For over 140 years the English game's end-of-season showpiece

1:52:25 > 1:52:28has been an iconic occasion,

1:52:28 > 1:52:31and been a career-defining stage for many of the game's stars.

1:52:31 > 1:52:35The romance of the competition has forged unlikely heroes,

1:52:35 > 1:52:38rewarded lifelong endeavour and, on occasion,

1:52:38 > 1:52:41acted as a catalyst for even greater feats to come.

1:52:41 > 1:52:46In 1990, Manchester United was a club in need of exactly that.

1:52:46 > 1:52:49Despite two FA Cup successes in the preceding decade, the Holy Grail

1:52:49 > 1:52:52that was the League title had eluded them

1:52:52 > 1:52:54for almost a quarter of a century.

1:52:54 > 1:52:56The latest man charged with leading their crusade

1:52:56 > 1:52:57was Scot Alex Ferguson,

1:52:57 > 1:53:02who'd replaced double-Cup winner Ron Atkinson in November 1986.

1:53:02 > 1:53:04The early signs were encouraging.

1:53:04 > 1:53:06United runners-up to a near invincible Liverpool

1:53:06 > 1:53:09in Ferguson's first full season in charge.

1:53:09 > 1:53:12But that was looking increasingly like a false dawn.

1:53:12 > 1:53:15By the turn of the new decade, United were languishing in 15th,

1:53:15 > 1:53:19and the manager's position was hanging by a fine thread.

1:53:19 > 1:53:21Rumour whispered that Alex Ferguson wouldn't survive

1:53:21 > 1:53:25if Manchester United, with only four points from their last eight games,

1:53:25 > 1:53:27were knocked out at Nottingham Forest.

1:53:27 > 1:53:30But rumour was never put to the test.

1:53:30 > 1:53:32Kept in by Martin.

1:53:32 > 1:53:35Hughes, he's got a lot of room.

1:53:35 > 1:53:37And here's Robins.

1:53:37 > 1:53:39The saviour was Mark Robins -

1:53:39 > 1:53:42a 20-year-old whose scoring record in the Reserves had earned him

1:53:42 > 1:53:46the chance to try where others had failed.

1:53:46 > 1:53:50At Edgar Street, Hereford United put the beef on show.

1:53:50 > 1:53:54The question was, would Manchester United prove to be the beef-eater?

1:53:57 > 1:53:59Hughes.

1:53:59 > 1:54:01A lovely turn by the Welsh international.

1:54:01 > 1:54:03Oh, it's Duxbury, the captain.

1:54:03 > 1:54:05Is he going to do the captain's job?

1:54:05 > 1:54:06He is. Clayton Blackmore.

1:54:06 > 1:54:08And, in the end, it looked easy.

1:54:08 > 1:54:11But what an important contribution by Mike Duxbury.

1:54:13 > 1:54:16At St James's Park, they and Newcastle kept their managers,

1:54:16 > 1:54:19not to mention the spectators, on their feet.

1:54:23 > 1:54:25And they all miss it, except Robins.

1:54:25 > 1:54:26It's in.

1:54:26 > 1:54:28Robins has done it again.

1:54:41 > 1:54:43Wallace. Yes!

1:54:43 > 1:54:44Oh, what a finish.

1:54:44 > 1:54:45What a finish.

1:54:52 > 1:54:55And he's down, and the ball is in.

1:54:58 > 1:55:00Ince.

1:55:00 > 1:55:02Looking for Wallace...

1:55:02 > 1:55:04and may have found him.

1:55:04 > 1:55:05Little touch, McClair.

1:55:13 > 1:55:15Signposts to Wembley were getting fewer.

1:55:15 > 1:55:17For Manchester United to go all the way

1:55:17 > 1:55:19would mean setting a strange record -

1:55:19 > 1:55:23drawn away in every round, each game played on a Sunday.

1:55:23 > 1:55:24Wallace.

1:55:25 > 1:55:27Good back header. Hughes.

1:55:27 > 1:55:28McClair.

1:55:35 > 1:55:37Holden again. He's trying to change the angle.

1:55:37 > 1:55:40Oh, an awkward one. And Barrett!

1:55:40 > 1:55:41Barrett the scorer.

1:55:43 > 1:55:45What a mess for Manchester United.

1:55:45 > 1:55:47What a delight for Oldham Athletic.

1:55:51 > 1:55:53Hughes.

1:55:54 > 1:55:56Barrett.

1:55:58 > 1:55:59Bruce.

1:55:59 > 1:56:00And Robson.

1:56:03 > 1:56:04It's 1-1!

1:56:10 > 1:56:11Phelan.

1:56:13 > 1:56:14Slightly stubbed it,

1:56:14 > 1:56:16but it comes to Gibson.

1:56:16 > 1:56:19And...it's Webb.

1:56:26 > 1:56:28Irwin.

1:56:28 > 1:56:30Redfern, got away.

1:56:30 > 1:56:31It's a good cross.

1:56:31 > 1:56:32Marshall!

1:56:34 > 1:56:36What an unbelievable day this is.

1:56:40 > 1:56:42Nicked away by McClair.

1:56:42 > 1:56:44Useful ball, this.

1:56:44 > 1:56:47Test of his pace, now test of his finish.

1:56:47 > 1:56:49And he's equal to both!

1:56:56 > 1:56:57Milligan.

1:56:57 > 1:57:00Yes, there's space here for Marshall.

1:57:00 > 1:57:02And Palmer's far-side.

1:57:02 > 1:57:04It's all square again!

1:57:06 > 1:57:08Still Robson. Wallace.

1:57:08 > 1:57:10Robson just inside. "Give it me back."

1:57:10 > 1:57:12He's screaming to be given it back. Wallace.

1:57:12 > 1:57:14Oh, it's going to go in!

1:57:14 > 1:57:15Yes, McClair!

1:57:19 > 1:57:21The free kick is taken. Irwin.

1:57:21 > 1:57:24It suddenly opened up in front of him.

1:57:24 > 1:57:27Irwin again.

1:57:27 > 1:57:28Milligan.

1:57:28 > 1:57:30Holden.

1:57:30 > 1:57:32Appeal for handball, not given.

1:57:32 > 1:57:34Holden's cross. It's a bit short.

1:57:34 > 1:57:37It runs to Ritchie.

1:57:37 > 1:57:39Andy Ritchie!

1:57:44 > 1:57:46Sudden increase in impetus again.

1:57:46 > 1:57:48Phelan.

1:57:49 > 1:57:51Robins.

1:57:51 > 1:57:53Yes!

1:57:53 > 1:57:56Mark Robins' winner against his hometown club

1:57:56 > 1:57:58in the semifinal replay.

1:57:58 > 1:58:00The 20-year-old striker's latest act of FA Cup salvation

1:58:00 > 1:58:03that he'd provided for his manager.

1:58:03 > 1:58:06Well, the 1989-'90 season was Crystal Palace's

1:58:06 > 1:58:09first in the top flight for several years,

1:58:09 > 1:58:11having achieved promotion via the play-offs.

1:58:11 > 1:58:14And, predictably, survival would be their main aim.

1:58:14 > 1:58:17This soon appeared to be a tall order when they were on the end

1:58:17 > 1:58:19of a 9-0 thrashing at Anfield in September.

1:58:19 > 1:58:22But whilst the League proved to be a struggle,

1:58:22 > 1:58:25the FA Cup offered blessed relief, as the Eagles made capital from

1:58:25 > 1:58:28being drawn against a succession of lower League opposition.

1:58:28 > 1:58:32A hard-fought win at giant killers Cambridge in the Sixth Round

1:58:32 > 1:58:35put them into only their second ever FA Cup semifinal.

1:58:35 > 1:58:38Thomas. It's gone in!

1:58:38 > 1:58:40Their opponents - Liverpool.

1:58:40 > 1:58:43The Cup-holders, who'd humiliated Palace in the autumn,

1:58:43 > 1:58:46were pursuing a second League and Cup double in four years

1:58:46 > 1:58:51when they ran out at Villa Park on a sunny Sunday afternoon in April.

1:58:51 > 1:58:52Here's McMahon.

1:58:53 > 1:58:55Pardew.

1:58:55 > 1:58:57And McMahon intercepting.

1:58:57 > 1:59:00Rush going to the left now. Onside.

1:59:00 > 1:59:01Ian Rush.

1:59:02 > 1:59:04Liverpool take the lead.

1:59:04 > 1:59:07And Ian Rush, the ace goal-scorer,

1:59:07 > 1:59:10once again makes it look so easy.

1:59:11 > 1:59:14Well, let's see what Palace can do about it now in the second half,

1:59:14 > 1:59:17as they attack the Holte End here at Villa Park. John Pemberton.

1:59:17 > 1:59:19A lovely run early on. And a chance for Barber. And Venison.

1:59:19 > 1:59:21And it's a shot.

1:59:21 > 1:59:23And it's there by Bright!

1:59:23 > 1:59:27It's Mark Bright, straight from the kick-off!

1:59:32 > 1:59:35And now they've waved Andy Thorn up, as well.

1:59:35 > 1:59:38Andy Gray has placed the ball.

1:59:38 > 1:59:40That's his cross. And Bright's there,

1:59:40 > 1:59:41O'Reilly's there!

1:59:41 > 1:59:43And Palace...are they in front?

1:59:43 > 1:59:45Yes, they are.

1:59:50 > 1:59:52Staunton to Venison.

1:59:52 > 1:59:54Right across the goal.

1:59:54 > 1:59:56McMahon. Oh, it's there!

1:59:56 > 1:59:57It's 2-2!

2:00:00 > 2:00:02Steve McMahon.

2:00:02 > 2:00:03Beardsley. Oh, look at this.

2:00:03 > 2:00:05Staunton.

2:00:05 > 2:00:06Penalty!

2:00:06 > 2:00:08Pemberton on Staunton.

2:00:08 > 2:00:11George Courtney has pointed to the spot,

2:00:11 > 2:00:13and Pemberton is distraught.

2:00:16 > 2:00:18Barnes scores.

2:00:18 > 2:00:21The goalkeeper went the right way,

2:00:21 > 2:00:22but the kick was in the corner,

2:00:22 > 2:00:25and Liverpool lead by three goals to two.

2:00:28 > 2:00:30Thomas.

2:00:30 > 2:00:31And Bright's in there.

2:00:31 > 2:00:34And Thomas. Staunton.

2:00:34 > 2:00:37Gray! Gray! 3-3!

2:00:37 > 2:00:40Andy Gray for Palace. They're back in it.

2:00:44 > 2:00:45Thorn flicked it on.

2:00:45 > 2:00:47And it's gone in!

2:00:48 > 2:00:50Pardew.

2:00:50 > 2:00:514-3 Palace.

2:00:53 > 2:00:56Palace's semifinal victory remains one of the greatest upsets

2:00:56 > 2:00:59in the competition's history.

2:00:59 > 2:01:02And they followed it up by securing their First Division status in May.

2:01:02 > 2:01:04The man behind the Eagles' ascent

2:01:04 > 2:01:06was a former Manchester United winger,

2:01:06 > 2:01:10who'd lifted the cup for the Old Trafford club back in 1977.

2:01:10 > 2:01:13John Motson profiled the man who was about to make history

2:01:13 > 2:01:17as the FA Cup Final's youngest-ever manager.

2:01:17 > 2:01:20To see him scampering about in practice, you have to remind

2:01:20 > 2:01:23yourself that this time he's going as a manager, not as a player.

2:01:23 > 2:01:25Still just short of his 21st birthday,

2:01:25 > 2:01:28Steve was a member of the Manchester United team that reached

2:01:28 > 2:01:30the 1976 FA Cup Final,

2:01:30 > 2:01:33but there was to be no fairytale ending to his first

2:01:33 > 2:01:35big match at Wembley.

2:01:35 > 2:01:38McCalliog, to Stokes, who's onside!

2:01:38 > 2:01:411-0!

2:01:41 > 2:01:44At the time, I didn't feel that disappointed

2:01:44 > 2:01:47because I always say that I came away from the final with a medal,

2:01:47 > 2:01:50and 12 months before, I'd been sitting in my front room,

2:01:50 > 2:01:53like millions of people, watching it and never dreaming I'd have the

2:01:53 > 2:01:55opportunity to play in an FA Cup Final.

2:01:55 > 2:01:58It was only about two months later that I realised

2:01:58 > 2:02:02that that could have been my one and only FA Cup Final chance.

2:02:02 > 2:02:06But a year later, Steve and United had the Cup Final suits on again.

2:02:06 > 2:02:10This time, their opponents were his boyhood team, Liverpool.

2:02:10 > 2:02:12Won by Macari.

2:02:12 > 2:02:14Smith slips slightly, delivering!

2:02:20 > 2:02:23The biggest thing which had driven me on

2:02:23 > 2:02:28in the final was I'd shown my medals,

2:02:28 > 2:02:30which I'd received 12 months previously

2:02:30 > 2:02:33from the Southampton game, to so many people.

2:02:33 > 2:02:37It had been hammered into my mind, looking at this medal,

2:02:37 > 2:02:39"Runners-up, runners up, runners up, runners up."

2:02:39 > 2:02:43And then, to actually get a medal, I flipped it over and looked at it

2:02:43 > 2:02:47and it said "Winners". That was a brilliant feeling.

2:02:49 > 2:02:51Pride of place in the collection.

2:02:53 > 2:02:56Two years later, you were back at Wembley in another Cup Final,

2:02:56 > 2:02:57weren't you? This is '79 now.

2:02:57 > 2:03:00Certainly, as a player, I've never gone from such a high

2:03:00 > 2:03:04of emotion to the depths of despair so quickly in all my life.

2:03:04 > 2:03:06McIlroy's through!

2:03:07 > 2:03:09And McIlroy...has got it!

2:03:09 > 2:03:12What drama here!

2:03:12 > 2:03:16McIlroy for United. It's 2-2.

2:03:16 > 2:03:18They kicked off and the next time we touched the ball

2:03:18 > 2:03:20was when we were kicking off 3-2 down.

2:03:22 > 2:03:25Right across. Sunderland is there!

2:03:25 > 2:03:28In November 1981, at Wembley,

2:03:28 > 2:03:31when England beat Hungary to qualify for the World Cup Finals,

2:03:31 > 2:03:35a brutal tackle by left back Jozsef Toth shattered Steve's left knee.

2:03:35 > 2:03:38He tackled me and I just had this horrible feeling.

2:03:38 > 2:03:41I felt as if my knee had exploded, someone had put a firework

2:03:41 > 2:03:43in the centre of my knee and it had gone off.

2:03:43 > 2:03:45But even though he could do hardly any training,

2:03:45 > 2:03:49he still enjoyed some memorable moments the following season.

2:03:50 > 2:03:52And can Coppell drive one?

2:03:52 > 2:03:54What a goal!

2:03:55 > 2:03:57What a goal by Steve Coppell!

2:03:58 > 2:04:02But when United went to Wembley to play Brighton in 1983,

2:04:02 > 2:04:05Coppell was a non-playing member of the party.

2:04:05 > 2:04:09The knee had broken down again. He'd played his last League game.

2:04:09 > 2:04:12In the autumn, came the final verdict from the specialist.

2:04:14 > 2:04:17He just came in and broke the news to me

2:04:17 > 2:04:20as well as such a thing can be said.

2:04:20 > 2:04:24He said, "If you want to be walking round come 35,

2:04:24 > 2:04:26"you've got to pack it in now."

2:04:26 > 2:04:29In June 1984, at the tender age of 28,

2:04:29 > 2:04:31Steve Coppell became manager of Crystal Palace.

2:04:31 > 2:04:34The so-called "Team Of The '80s" had broken up,

2:04:34 > 2:04:36and there was no money in the bank.

2:04:36 > 2:04:40Everything was done on a shoestring, the first year, to be quite honest.

2:04:42 > 2:04:45We were delighted that Carlisle got relegated

2:04:45 > 2:04:51because we'd exhausted our welcome at the couple of hotels that we

2:04:51 > 2:04:55used to use in Carlisle, we were so late in paying bills and that.

2:04:55 > 2:04:58We were banned from hotels.

2:04:58 > 2:05:01We lived very much from hand-to-mouth.

2:05:01 > 2:05:04Palace, under Coppell, have made steady progress over six seasons.

2:05:04 > 2:05:08In many ways, I am lucky that our humble origins

2:05:08 > 2:05:12mean we are as united a team I played in.

2:05:13 > 2:05:16We do have naivety on our side.

2:05:16 > 2:05:19In this year of the underdog, is Palace's name on the cup?

2:05:19 > 2:05:22Coppell sees it as a precious day for both managers.

2:05:22 > 2:05:25I was speaking to Alex Ferguson the other day

2:05:25 > 2:05:26and he was talking about it,

2:05:26 > 2:05:28and he was saying, "Well, you work all your life to lead a team

2:05:28 > 2:05:31"out in Wembley," and there's a man who's won European cups

2:05:31 > 2:05:33and done everything with Aberdeen,

2:05:33 > 2:05:38and he's spent a career in football and he has got a great delight,

2:05:38 > 2:05:43it's the biggest thing in his life, to lead a team out at Wembley.

2:05:43 > 2:05:47And when people encapsulate it like that, you then actually think,

2:05:47 > 2:05:52"Yeah, it is. This is something really different."

2:05:52 > 2:05:56The importance of the occasion, not lost on the rookie manager.

2:05:56 > 2:05:57But what about his opposite number?

2:05:57 > 2:06:00Well, Tony Gubba went to the Manchester United team hotel

2:06:00 > 2:06:02to get the inside track.

2:06:02 > 2:06:05Manchester United are using the same hotel headquarters

2:06:05 > 2:06:08and training facilities as that chosen by the England

2:06:08 > 2:06:11international squad in Buckinghamshire.

2:06:11 > 2:06:14After the pressures of a season where they flirted with relegation,

2:06:14 > 2:06:18the build-up to tomorrow's Cup Final is exaggeratedly relaxed.

2:06:19 > 2:06:23It's the most important event of my life, really,

2:06:23 > 2:06:26because it's such a great club, United.

2:06:26 > 2:06:30It deserves the kind of success that the likes of tomorrow can bring.

2:06:31 > 2:06:35The supporters are down there and it has been a disappointing season.

2:06:35 > 2:06:38And people in Scotland may find it strange...

2:06:38 > 2:06:41- Cos you won so much with Aberdeen, didn't you?- Correct.

2:06:41 > 2:06:45And it's not an insult, it's just that these are memories now.

2:06:45 > 2:06:51Lovely memories but tomorrow is the biggest event of my life.

2:06:52 > 2:06:55Alex Ferguson has the luxury of being able to select whatever

2:06:55 > 2:06:58he considers his strongest Manchester United team.

2:06:58 > 2:07:03All his £13.5 millions' worth of stars are available

2:07:03 > 2:07:05and from a named squad of 12,

2:07:05 > 2:07:08it seems likely that young goal poacher Mark Robins will be

2:07:08 > 2:07:12the one given the substitute shirt. Whatever, Alex Ferguson is

2:07:12 > 2:07:15trying to keep his cards close to his chest.

2:07:16 > 2:07:19He's played his part. He's played a marvellous part.

2:07:19 > 2:07:23You couldn't go beyond that. You must look at Mark Robins.

2:07:24 > 2:07:25Um...

2:07:25 > 2:07:31And other players of the 13 would maybe come from Mal Donaghy,

2:07:31 > 2:07:33Clayton Blackmore, someone who can play positions,

2:07:33 > 2:07:38would give me cover and that's just common sense, really.

2:07:40 > 2:07:43So, United's young striker was set for a place on the bench.

2:07:43 > 2:07:46But who would start up front for Crystal Palace was still to

2:07:46 > 2:07:47be answered.

2:07:47 > 2:07:51David Davies went looking for clues at the Eagles' Cup Final nest.

2:07:52 > 2:07:55The message from the Crystal Palace hotel some 40 minutes from

2:07:55 > 2:07:58Wembley is, "We're as ready as we can be."

2:07:58 > 2:08:02Still no official announcement on the Crystal Palace team.

2:08:02 > 2:08:03The big question mark, of course,

2:08:03 > 2:08:08over what role Ian Wright will play, if any, in this Cup Final.

2:08:08 > 2:08:10Wright, who has twice broken a leg in the past year

2:08:10 > 2:08:13but who has made a quite amazing recovery.

2:08:13 > 2:08:17My information is that Palace will take no chances with their team,

2:08:17 > 2:08:19certainly from the start.

2:08:19 > 2:08:22Wright was up early this morning along with fullback

2:08:22 > 2:08:26Richard Shaw and John Salako who may well begin the game.

2:08:26 > 2:08:30Wright remains highly optimistic though about the big occasion.

2:08:30 > 2:08:32It's a great day. It's a very special occasion.

2:08:32 > 2:08:35And I don't think you should let all the razzmatazz

2:08:35 > 2:08:38what precedes it inhibit you.

2:08:38 > 2:08:42I think you just got to go enjoy the day and the game.

2:08:42 > 2:08:44- And you feel ready? - Yeah, definitely.

2:08:44 > 2:08:47I was born for this day, I was ready for this day.

2:08:47 > 2:08:50Steve, when we talked last night you said you had one problem to

2:08:50 > 2:08:52sleep on, have you resolved it?

2:08:52 > 2:08:57I've made a decision, whether I've resolved it, only 3.00 will tell.

2:08:57 > 2:09:01But I've made my mind up of what I'm going to do with the team.

2:09:01 > 2:09:05And I'll just keep my fingers crossed it's the right decision.

2:09:05 > 2:09:08Exactly what the right decision was remained to be seen.

2:09:08 > 2:09:10What had been revealed though were the sides'

2:09:10 > 2:09:12respective Cup Final songs.

2:09:12 > 2:09:15What was an annual tradition for Wembley-bound teams had two

2:09:15 > 2:09:19new entries into the musical hall of shame.

2:09:19 > 2:09:22# We will stand together

2:09:22 > 2:09:25# United

2:09:25 > 2:09:28# Against the foe

2:09:29 > 2:09:33# Never be divided

2:09:35 > 2:09:38# Never alone

2:09:39 > 2:09:43# Courage

2:09:43 > 2:09:45# Is the fire

2:09:46 > 2:09:48# Spirit

2:09:48 > 2:09:50# Is the flame

2:09:51 > 2:09:54# We are

2:09:54 > 2:09:58# the United

2:09:58 > 2:10:01# Proud, proud our name. #

2:10:03 > 2:10:06# Our love will last now Our love will last

2:10:06 > 2:10:09# Till the end of time End of time

2:10:09 > 2:10:13# Because this love now Because this love

2:10:13 > 2:10:16# Is only yours and mine Yours and mine

2:10:16 > 2:10:20# And I'm feelin' glad all over

2:10:20 > 2:10:24# Yes, I'm-a glad all over

2:10:24 > 2:10:27# Baby, I'm glad all over

2:10:27 > 2:10:30# So glad you're mine

2:10:31 > 2:10:33# So glad you're mine now

2:10:37 > 2:10:40# Say that you're mine now

2:10:40 > 2:10:43# Oh, oh, oh... #

2:10:45 > 2:10:48The original Dave Clark Five classic,

2:10:48 > 2:10:50a tune synonymous with Selhurst Park.

2:10:50 > 2:10:52That version, maybe less so.

2:10:52 > 2:10:55But would Palace be "glad all over" come full-time?

2:10:55 > 2:10:58For most of their team, it was a first-ever visit to Wembley's

2:10:58 > 2:11:01twin towers and they and their Manchester United counterparts

2:11:01 > 2:11:04took the chance to soak it all up pre-match.

2:11:04 > 2:11:06Gary O'Reilly of Crystal Palace,

2:11:06 > 2:11:08how does the atmosphere compare to what you expected.

2:11:08 > 2:11:10It's great.

2:11:10 > 2:11:12There seems to be a lot of Crystal Palace support in here

2:11:12 > 2:11:16and for only 14,000 people I think they've done brilliantly.

2:11:16 > 2:11:19Especially down on the approach to the stadium, as well.

2:11:19 > 2:11:22And another goal like yours in the semifinal that would do you

2:11:22 > 2:11:25- nicely today? - It would indeed. It would.

2:11:25 > 2:11:27Neil Webb, it's been quite a turnaround for you.

2:11:27 > 2:11:30Injury and look as though you were out of the game for a long time

2:11:30 > 2:11:32and here you are, Wembley final.

2:11:32 > 2:11:34It's been a long, hard struggle to get my fitness back

2:11:34 > 2:11:37and I believe I've done that I've got the biggest

2:11:37 > 2:11:40stage in the British game to prove it.

2:11:40 > 2:11:43It was something that kept us going through a disastrous League...

2:11:43 > 2:11:44League season this year

2:11:44 > 2:11:47and it would be nice if we could finish the season how we started it.

2:11:47 > 2:11:51John Pemberton of Crystal Palace, mixed emotions for you.

2:11:51 > 2:11:53- You were a United supporter not so long ago.- That's right.

2:11:53 > 2:11:55If I wouldn't have been playing here today

2:11:55 > 2:11:57I would have been up there with them lads.

2:11:57 > 2:11:59It's a fantastic day for everybody in it.

2:11:59 > 2:12:02And for a player who spent some years in the lower divisions

2:12:02 > 2:12:05- it's an even bigger day, surely? - Of course it is.

2:12:05 > 2:12:08I've pottered around the Fourth Division like a lot of lower players

2:12:08 > 2:12:10have done.

2:12:10 > 2:12:14We had chances to play in the First Division and we've all took that

2:12:14 > 2:12:19and this is a highlight of the whole season we've had.

2:12:19 > 2:12:22Geoff Thomas, the captain, that's something you share with John,

2:12:22 > 2:12:25experience in the lower divisions.

2:12:25 > 2:12:29Yes, to say two years ago ask me and John where we'd like to be,

2:12:29 > 2:12:31obviously we'd say Wembley.

2:12:31 > 2:12:34To turn out here for Crystal Palace today is something

2:12:34 > 2:12:35special for everybody.

2:12:35 > 2:12:38Mark Robins, the decision for Alex Ferguson is that you take

2:12:38 > 2:12:41the substitutes shirt. Are you disappointed?

2:12:41 > 2:12:44No, not really. I'm just glad to be involved in the 13.

2:12:44 > 2:12:46Just want to make the most of the day and hope we win.

2:12:46 > 2:12:47Have you been at Wembley before?

2:12:47 > 2:12:54I have, yes, 1986 I was here with English Under-16s.

2:12:54 > 2:12:56We won 3-2 so hopefully we can continue to win.

2:12:56 > 2:12:57It's a bit of a big occasion today.

2:12:57 > 2:13:00What are your feelings when you walk out here now?

2:13:00 > 2:13:03It's unbelievable. You've just got to experience it for yourself.

2:13:03 > 2:13:05It's really my first time playing in front of such a big crowd

2:13:05 > 2:13:07so hopefully everything will go well.

2:13:07 > 2:13:10Final thought, how many members of your family are here?

2:13:10 > 2:13:13Think there's about 24. We only got 24 tickets this year.

2:13:13 > 2:13:15The Robins family might have

2:13:15 > 2:13:18accounted for 24 of the Wembley tickets

2:13:18 > 2:13:20but the two men with the best seats in the house were the

2:13:20 > 2:13:22Cup Final grandstand commentary team

2:13:22 > 2:13:25of Trevor Brooking and first of all John Motson.

2:13:25 > 2:13:27The first all-seater FA Cup Final.

2:13:29 > 2:13:32And the first football match in this country to attract total

2:13:32 > 2:13:34receipts of over £2 million.

2:13:36 > 2:13:38That's the size of the occasion.

2:13:38 > 2:13:43And that's what today's 80,000 capacity crowd have paid to

2:13:43 > 2:13:46watch the 109th final and the 62nd at Wembley.

2:13:48 > 2:13:52And what a moment it is for these Palace lads and their fans.

2:13:52 > 2:13:56The first time the club has been in the FA Cup Final

2:13:56 > 2:14:00and they're bound to get an appropriate reception.

2:14:00 > 2:14:01And just listen to this.

2:14:01 > 2:14:03CHEERING

2:14:11 > 2:14:13Newcomers Crystal Palace...

2:14:13 > 2:14:17Have selected the side that played at Liverpool in the semifinal.

2:14:17 > 2:14:21Despite the morning speculation I have a feeling it was

2:14:21 > 2:14:23always doubtful Wright would start the game.

2:14:23 > 2:14:24He is a substitute.

2:14:24 > 2:14:27And Steve Coppell's main decision was who should be the second

2:14:27 > 2:14:30sub and there were a few tears at the hotel this

2:14:30 > 2:14:32morning from one of two of those who didn't make it.

2:14:32 > 2:14:34The unlucky players Eddie McGoldrick,

2:14:34 > 2:14:35Rudi Hedman, Jeff Hopkins

2:14:35 > 2:14:39but that's the team that beat Liverpool 4-3

2:14:39 > 2:14:46and certainly it's the formation Palace know can do a job for them.

2:14:47 > 2:14:51With possibly Andy Gray at 4, the man to watch on the set plays

2:14:51 > 2:14:54and Mark Bright the main striker at number 9.

2:14:56 > 2:14:57As for Manchester United

2:14:57 > 2:14:59Alex Ferguson had one or two thoughts but

2:14:59 > 2:15:04the semifinal replay team against Oldham won his nod of approval

2:15:04 > 2:15:06Danny Wallace selected ahead of Mark Robins who is

2:15:06 > 2:15:08one of the substitutes.

2:15:08 > 2:15:12And Alex Ferguson also slept on the selection of his second sub

2:15:12 > 2:15:15Clayton Blackmore just edged out Mal Donaghy.

2:15:15 > 2:15:18But Michael Phelan at number 5 will play right-back

2:15:18 > 2:15:22and Hughes will be very much alone up front in theory

2:15:22 > 2:15:25but in practice, Webb - number 8 - and the other midfield players

2:15:25 > 2:15:27will be expected to give him support.

2:15:29 > 2:15:32Bryan Robson on the right is bidding to become the first captain

2:15:32 > 2:15:35to receive the FA Cup three times at Wembley.

2:15:35 > 2:15:39And Geoff Thomas on the left started life as a part-time player

2:15:39 > 2:15:42with Rochdale when he was working as an electrician.

2:15:42 > 2:15:44He supported Manchester City.

2:15:44 > 2:15:47And he used to catch the team coach in his overalls in those days.

2:15:47 > 2:15:51What a change for him today as captain of an FA Cup Final team.

2:15:55 > 2:15:57The referee is Allan Gunn

2:15:57 > 2:16:01from South Chailey in Sussex.

2:16:01 > 2:16:05Crystal Palace won the toss for choice of colours

2:16:05 > 2:16:08and they're wearing their familiar red and blue vertical stripes.

2:16:08 > 2:16:10Very nice strip it is, too.

2:16:10 > 2:16:13Manchester United in all white

2:16:13 > 2:16:17which their long-serving supporters will remind me

2:16:17 > 2:16:20they used in the finals of 1957 and although I don't think

2:16:20 > 2:16:24any of us go back that far, 1909 when they first won the cup.

2:16:24 > 2:16:26So Palace start the game.

2:16:28 > 2:16:31This surface is in quite marvellous condition.

2:16:31 > 2:16:33Bryan Robson himself said to me

2:16:33 > 2:16:36he can't recall the Wembley pitch looking and feeling better.

2:16:36 > 2:16:39"If you can't play on this," was his pre-match comment,

2:16:39 > 2:16:41"well, perhaps you shouldn't be here."

2:16:45 > 2:16:48Barber tries to play the ball through.

2:16:48 > 2:16:51John Salako played left back in the semifinal against Liverpool

2:16:51 > 2:16:53wearing number ten and he's there again.

2:16:53 > 2:16:57His job will be to shadow Brian McClair on the United right,

2:16:57 > 2:16:58as we try to...

2:17:00 > 2:17:02..form a view on the various tactical implications.

2:17:02 > 2:17:05Here's Michael Phelan, number five for United.

2:17:07 > 2:17:08Thorn away.

2:17:08 > 2:17:11That's Ince in midfield, although he's wearing number two.

2:17:11 > 2:17:13That's where you'll find him.

2:17:13 > 2:17:15Pallister for Manchester United.

2:17:15 > 2:17:17McClair has now pulled away to the left.

2:17:17 > 2:17:20And look where Salako has gone. He's gone with him.

2:17:20 > 2:17:21That's a man-to-man arrangement.

2:17:21 > 2:17:23They prepare so carefully,

2:17:23 > 2:17:26Steve Coppell there with Alan Smith and Ian Branfoot on the bench,

2:17:26 > 2:17:30their tactical approach to these big games.

2:17:35 > 2:17:38Bright, again, moving right out to the touchline.

2:17:38 > 2:17:40Taking defenders with him.

2:17:48 > 2:17:49Gray.

2:17:52 > 2:17:55And still, well, he was flattened the second time.

2:17:56 > 2:17:57Danny Wallace...

2:18:01 > 2:18:04Now, this could be dangerous.

2:18:04 > 2:18:05Once Gray gets to his feet,

2:18:05 > 2:18:08provided he is fit enough to take the free kick,

2:18:08 > 2:18:11Dave West, the Palace physio will come on.

2:18:12 > 2:18:16Of course, they sit so close to each other in Wembley, the two managers.

2:18:18 > 2:18:20Free kick to Crystal Palace.

2:18:20 > 2:18:22Andy Gray's back on his feet to take it.

2:18:25 > 2:18:27Thorn... O'Reilly's in there.

2:18:27 > 2:18:29And was it over the line?

2:18:29 > 2:18:30And it's a goal!

2:18:33 > 2:18:34Gary O'Reilly...

2:18:34 > 2:18:36after 19 minutes.

2:18:36 > 2:18:41It was in the net before Steve Bruce could get his foot to it.

2:18:42 > 2:18:44And Crystal Palace, the underdogs,

2:18:44 > 2:18:48have taken the lead in precisely the way many people expected.

2:18:48 > 2:18:51The free kick, I think it was bent in by Barber there.

2:18:51 > 2:18:55Whether that came of Pallister's head, as well, I'm not quite sure.

2:18:55 > 2:18:57O'Reilly's taking the congratulations.

2:19:00 > 2:19:02And was that Pallister or O'Reilly?

2:19:03 > 2:19:07Anyway, Bruce couldn't keep it out, and Palace are in front.

2:19:09 > 2:19:11Well, they took the lead, just as everybody anticipated

2:19:11 > 2:19:14Palace would if they did score - from a set piece.

2:19:14 > 2:19:17On that occasion, of course, it was right near the touchline.

2:19:17 > 2:19:20Manchester United couldn't push out to the 18-yard box -

2:19:20 > 2:19:23they were hemmed in near the penalty spot.

2:19:23 > 2:19:26Jim Leighton did come for the cross, didn't get there,

2:19:26 > 2:19:30and it looped agonisingly into the empty net and 1-0.

2:19:30 > 2:19:33Well, the Minister of Sport must be fairly pleased on the response

2:19:33 > 2:19:36he got from the UEFA President before the kick-off today.

2:19:36 > 2:19:39Colin Moynihan can now enjoy the game after a busy week.

2:19:41 > 2:19:44This is Phelan, though, and they're coming in from the far post.

2:19:44 > 2:19:45McClair!

2:19:45 > 2:19:47And well blocked, Salako.

2:19:47 > 2:19:50It's a goal kick because McClair, I think, got an extra touch.

2:19:50 > 2:19:53Although he wouldn't agree with that.

2:19:53 > 2:19:56John Salako did some valiant defending there for Crystal Palace.

2:19:56 > 2:19:58It was a delightful ball from Michael Phelan.

2:19:58 > 2:20:01It was aimed at McClair but Salako was closing it down.

2:20:03 > 2:20:05Here's Phelan.

2:20:06 > 2:20:08Foul - Barber.

2:20:24 > 2:20:26Wallace, good ball in.

2:20:26 > 2:20:27Hughes is there. McClair!

2:20:27 > 2:20:31And I think that hit a Palace player last. That's a corner.

2:20:34 > 2:20:38I think John Salako was the player that actually put that ball out.

2:20:38 > 2:20:40It was Danny Wallace's cross,

2:20:40 > 2:20:42and I'm pretty sure that comes off Salako.

2:20:47 > 2:20:50Webb will take the corner. Pallister on the near post.

2:20:50 > 2:20:51McClair on the goal-line.

2:20:51 > 2:20:53Bruce and Robson waiting to come in.

2:20:55 > 2:20:58Back header! Oh, goodness me!

2:20:58 > 2:21:00I think that was...

2:21:00 > 2:21:02probably Mark Bright

2:21:02 > 2:21:04who actually got his head to that.

2:21:09 > 2:21:11So, we'll look at it again. Yes, number nine for Palace.

2:21:15 > 2:21:18Pallister. They want it played in. Hughes is waiting, too.

2:21:20 > 2:21:23But Palace's defensive play at the moment is sound. It's compact.

2:21:23 > 2:21:26And if Gray hadn't been impeded,

2:21:26 > 2:21:29they would have been away there, but this is Martin.

2:21:29 > 2:21:31Referee saw nothing wrong.

2:21:31 > 2:21:32Ince.

2:21:33 > 2:21:35That's a good-looking ball from McClair.

2:21:35 > 2:21:37Wallace comes near post.

2:21:37 > 2:21:38Wallace.

2:21:39 > 2:21:41McClair. Robson!

2:21:41 > 2:21:43Goal!

2:21:46 > 2:21:49Bryan Robson equalises for Manchester United

2:21:49 > 2:21:52after 35 minutes

2:21:52 > 2:21:55and Captain Marvel is there again.

2:21:57 > 2:21:58Now, good play here.

2:21:58 > 2:22:02Danny Wallace just worked the ball out wide.

2:22:02 > 2:22:05The cross was delivered long to the far post and Bryan...

2:22:05 > 2:22:08Oh, there was a deflection off a defender, as well, there.

2:22:10 > 2:22:12It's one each.

2:22:14 > 2:22:16And as Robson gets the header in,

2:22:16 > 2:22:19that's John Pemberton I think, was it?

2:22:19 > 2:22:21Or maybe the man in front of him

2:22:21 > 2:22:24that just diverted it to make it 1-1.

2:22:24 > 2:22:26Great emotion in the crowd.

2:22:33 > 2:22:34This is Bruce.

2:22:39 > 2:22:41In by Wallace. Webb.

2:22:41 > 2:22:42McClair. Hughes!

2:22:42 > 2:22:43No, not quite.

2:22:43 > 2:22:45Can Phelan retrieve it? He can.

2:22:45 > 2:22:47McClair!

2:22:47 > 2:22:50And it could so easily have been 2-1 to United.

2:22:50 > 2:22:52And Alex Ferguson thought it was for a moment.

2:22:52 > 2:22:55He was on his feet as Brian McClair, who made the first goal,

2:22:55 > 2:22:57nearly scored the second.

2:22:57 > 2:23:00It's Webb working well there on the far side.

2:23:00 > 2:23:01It nearly ran for Hughes.

2:23:01 > 2:23:03Now look what happens.

2:23:03 > 2:23:05Michael Phelan, a great cutback.

2:23:05 > 2:23:08And McClair's header the wrong side of the post.

2:23:09 > 2:23:12A superb cross by Michael Phelan, and really Brian McClair

2:23:12 > 2:23:16will go in at half-time wondering how on earth he missed it.

2:23:16 > 2:23:17WHISTLE BLOWS

2:23:17 > 2:23:19And there is the half-time whistle.

2:23:19 > 2:23:24And the two teams in the 1990 FA Cup Final go off level.

2:23:24 > 2:23:26So, at half-time at Wembley it's...

2:23:32 > 2:23:34Bright sunshine now.

2:23:39 > 2:23:42It's Webb for Manchester United.

2:23:42 > 2:23:46Still not perhaps dominating the game in midfield. This is Andy Gray.

2:23:48 > 2:23:50And Ince gets in the way.

2:23:50 > 2:23:51But Gray won't be denied.

2:23:51 > 2:23:54Here's Pemberton. This is exactly what he did in the semifinal!

2:23:56 > 2:24:00And Bryan Robson, rather more aware than the Liverpool defenders were!

2:24:00 > 2:24:03John Pemberton must take sort of some special...

2:24:03 > 2:24:06something special in his cup of tea at half-time.

2:24:06 > 2:24:08I won't suggest anything stronger than that.

2:24:08 > 2:24:11But he does seem to come out full of running.

2:24:13 > 2:24:14Martin.

2:24:14 > 2:24:15Robson.

2:24:18 > 2:24:21Oh, goodness me, they're manhandling Robson a bit. That was Gray.

2:24:21 > 2:24:23The referee says, "You've got the ball," to Lee Martin. Play on.

2:24:23 > 2:24:25Good advantage by Allan Gunn.

2:24:25 > 2:24:27Here's Pallister.

2:24:27 > 2:24:30And United with seven players forward in this attack.

2:24:30 > 2:24:32One of them is Ince here.

2:24:34 > 2:24:36And now, Pallister.

2:24:36 > 2:24:38And Webb.

2:24:40 > 2:24:43Palace making them work so hard to get forward. Phelan.

2:24:47 > 2:24:49Wallace.

2:24:54 > 2:24:56Ince.

2:24:56 > 2:24:58Salako having another good game at left back,

2:24:58 > 2:25:01which was something of an unfamiliar position to him

2:25:01 > 2:25:02at the beginning of the season.

2:25:04 > 2:25:06And Paul Ince was the player he stopped there.

2:25:11 > 2:25:12Webb.

2:25:18 > 2:25:19Palace dwelling. Wallace.

2:25:21 > 2:25:22A ricochet - Hughes!

2:25:24 > 2:25:252-1 to Manchester United.

2:25:27 > 2:25:30And a devastating finish by Mark Hughes.

2:25:33 > 2:25:35And I have to say, the Palace defence

2:25:35 > 2:25:38were pussyfooting around a bit there, really.

2:25:38 > 2:25:40They had their chance to clear,

2:25:40 > 2:25:42Thorn didn't do so. And when it

2:25:42 > 2:25:44came to Hughes' left foot

2:25:44 > 2:25:47that was a deadly goal-scorer's instinct.

2:25:49 > 2:25:52After 62 minutes, Mark Hughes

2:25:52 > 2:25:54scores his 14th goal of the season,

2:25:54 > 2:25:56his first in the FA Cup this season,

2:25:56 > 2:25:59and it puts Manchester United into a 2-1 lead.

2:26:04 > 2:26:06Take nothing away from Hughes - that was first-class -

2:26:06 > 2:26:09but Crystal Palace's manager told them yesterday,

2:26:09 > 2:26:12"Whatever you do, make sure you concentrate

2:26:12 > 2:26:13"for the whole 90 minutes."

2:26:13 > 2:26:16And just for a few seconds there, they lost it,

2:26:16 > 2:26:17and they paid the price.

2:26:17 > 2:26:19Here we have the ricochet,

2:26:19 > 2:26:21and suddenly Gary O'Reilly coming

2:26:21 > 2:26:24out of defence, caught flat-footed,

2:26:24 > 2:26:26and there is Mark Hughes, hits it in.

2:26:26 > 2:26:28And there's a happy man there, I think.

2:26:28 > 2:26:31They say that Mark Hughes doesn't score the simple goals,

2:26:31 > 2:26:32only the spectacular ones.

2:26:32 > 2:26:36Well, that was, if you like, a simple opportunity,

2:26:36 > 2:26:37but it was taken in some style.

2:26:39 > 2:26:40Webb.

2:26:42 > 2:26:44There goes Phelan, good running from right-back.

2:26:44 > 2:26:46Hughes in the middle again.

2:26:52 > 2:26:53Wallace.

2:26:53 > 2:26:55Webb.

2:26:55 > 2:26:57Three in the centre.

2:26:57 > 2:26:58Hughes!

2:26:58 > 2:27:00Oh, how did they get that out?

2:27:00 > 2:27:01Andy Thorn, I think,

2:27:01 > 2:27:03miraculously from McClair.

2:27:05 > 2:27:06What a clearance.

2:27:06 > 2:27:08That could have killed the game completely.

2:27:08 > 2:27:10And they know it down there.

2:27:12 > 2:27:15Marvellous cross by Neil Webb there to the far post.

2:27:15 > 2:27:17Actually, the cross is beyond the far post, the goal.

2:27:17 > 2:27:19Mark Hughes had the one chested

2:27:19 > 2:27:21down early in this second half.

2:27:21 > 2:27:23And that one there that's causing Palace problems

2:27:23 > 2:27:25is beyond the far post.

2:27:27 > 2:27:29Well, Mark Hughes looks to be

2:27:29 > 2:27:31the man for the big occasion.

2:27:31 > 2:27:33I remember him making the goal for Norman Whiteside

2:27:33 > 2:27:35when United last won the Cup.

2:27:35 > 2:27:36But it's early to talk about that.

2:27:36 > 2:27:37Here's Bright.

2:27:39 > 2:27:41Pallister.

2:27:41 > 2:27:43And look where Jim Leighton was.

2:27:44 > 2:27:47When Pallister sliced that ball over his own crossbar,

2:27:47 > 2:27:50the goalkeeper had come, and must have been eight yards out.

2:27:50 > 2:27:52It's a ball played in here by Mark Bright,

2:27:52 > 2:27:54there's Leighton coming to claim it,

2:27:54 > 2:27:57but never got a chance.

2:27:57 > 2:27:58Now then, corner.

2:27:58 > 2:28:00Always the danger signal,

2:28:00 > 2:28:01with Palace bending them in.

2:28:04 > 2:28:06On that occasion, bending, then over.

2:28:09 > 2:28:12And Crystal Palace are going to make a change.

2:28:17 > 2:28:19Ian Wright, the whizz kid from Woolwich,

2:28:19 > 2:28:21who made a huge impression last season

2:28:21 > 2:28:22when Palace won promotion,

2:28:22 > 2:28:25but who's twice had a hairline fracture of his shinbone,

2:28:25 > 2:28:28and has only played in four

2:28:28 > 2:28:31of the last 22 matches.

2:28:31 > 2:28:33He's missed the last ten, in fact.

2:28:33 > 2:28:37This is his moment now to prove that he's fit

2:28:37 > 2:28:39and able to make a contribution.

2:28:42 > 2:28:43Wallace.

2:28:45 > 2:28:46Webb back to Wallace,

2:28:46 > 2:28:48and there goes Robson, onside.

2:28:48 > 2:28:51Hughes coming in from the far post, but it's Bryan Robson,

2:28:51 > 2:28:53and a good challenge by Alan Pardew,

2:28:53 > 2:28:55forcing Robson to shoot wide at the last.

2:28:57 > 2:29:00I would think that Bobby Robson up in the stand, Trevor, would be

2:29:00 > 2:29:02very pleased to see Bryan Robson

2:29:02 > 2:29:05so active and so involved.

2:29:05 > 2:29:08Well, those sort of runs are the ones he's famous for.

2:29:08 > 2:29:10It's that sort of run which got him his semifinal goal,

2:29:10 > 2:29:11wasn't it, against Oldham?

2:29:11 > 2:29:14But on that occasion, Alan Pardew did very well.

2:29:14 > 2:29:16He couldn't quite get in a tackle

2:29:16 > 2:29:17cos it was in a dangerous situation,

2:29:17 > 2:29:20could have conceded a penalty, but just shouldered him off-balance

2:29:20 > 2:29:22enough so as he couldn't hit a good shot.

2:29:22 > 2:29:25Now, here's Wright, his first chance to show what he can do.

2:29:25 > 2:29:27And he's through! It's Wright...

2:29:27 > 2:29:29oh, what an impact by the substitute!

2:29:31 > 2:29:32It's 2-2.

2:29:34 > 2:29:37And it's Ian Wright who has sent

2:29:37 > 2:29:40the Palace supporters into ecstasy.

2:29:45 > 2:29:48The ball played through to him in not the best position,

2:29:48 > 2:29:51I have to say, but look what he made of this.

2:29:51 > 2:29:53He turned the defender beautifully

2:29:53 > 2:29:55and slid it wide of Jim Leighton.

2:29:55 > 2:29:57And that was in the 73rd minute,

2:29:57 > 2:29:59just three minutes after

2:29:59 > 2:30:01Ian Wright had come on.

2:30:01 > 2:30:03And what a lovely individual goal.

2:30:03 > 2:30:07A touch of the Ricky Villas about that one, Trevor.

2:30:07 > 2:30:09He looks pretty pleased there - I'm not surprised.

2:30:09 > 2:30:12I do believe it was his first touch, wasn't it?

2:30:12 > 2:30:14He'd been running around, as you do as a substitute,

2:30:14 > 2:30:15trying to get a touch.

2:30:15 > 2:30:19Here he is, and is really Gary Pallister caught very flat-footed.

2:30:19 > 2:30:21You shouldn't let a striker turned in on goal like that.

2:30:21 > 2:30:24You should funnel him to the touchline.

2:30:24 > 2:30:26He kept his head well, kept it low.

2:30:26 > 2:30:28And really, that is him at his best.

2:30:28 > 2:30:29Turns inside, he's so quick,

2:30:29 > 2:30:31always on his toes, sees that corner.

2:30:35 > 2:30:37What a Cup this has been, hasn't it?

2:30:37 > 2:30:40Always topsy-turvy matches, and there Steve Coppell -

2:30:40 > 2:30:42the masterstroke substitution, shall we say?

2:30:42 > 2:30:45But that has to go down as one of the classic individual

2:30:45 > 2:30:48Cup Final goals.

2:30:48 > 2:30:50It came out of nothing from a player whose skill factor

2:30:50 > 2:30:51is well-recognised,

2:30:51 > 2:30:54but who many people felt wasn't fit enough to take part today.

2:30:54 > 2:30:56well, he's proved them all wrong.

2:30:56 > 2:30:58Steve Coppell has been proved right, because to leave him out

2:30:58 > 2:31:02of the starting line-up, and then bring him on when something fresh

2:31:02 > 2:31:04was needed, has proved at this stage

2:31:04 > 2:31:06to be something of a masterstroke.

2:31:09 > 2:31:11McClair, Webb.

2:31:11 > 2:31:13Wallace making a run across the box.

2:31:13 > 2:31:15He and Hughes hit each other... HE LAUGHS

2:31:15 > 2:31:17..and both finished on the ground.

2:31:17 > 2:31:18It's a sign of the...

2:31:19 > 2:31:22..confusion that seems to have spread through United

2:31:22 > 2:31:23the last few minutes.

2:31:23 > 2:31:25In fact, Wallace has got hurt.

2:31:25 > 2:31:26And Hughes is down.

2:31:28 > 2:31:30And this could be the signal maybe for Robins to get ready.

2:31:33 > 2:31:35I see no movement yet on the bench.

2:31:35 > 2:31:37There's the young man.

2:31:37 > 2:31:39McClair.

2:31:39 > 2:31:41Webb.

2:31:41 > 2:31:42Robson!

2:31:42 > 2:31:44Good save by Martyn.

2:31:47 > 2:31:50Certainly was typical Bryan Robson,

2:31:50 > 2:31:51getting in late again.

2:31:51 > 2:31:53He might have got the faintest of touches,

2:31:53 > 2:31:55but I'm sure it came back off the post in the end.

2:31:56 > 2:31:59Lee Martin is walking across towards the touchline...

2:32:04 > 2:32:07..and Clayton Blackmore is the player coming on.

2:32:07 > 2:32:10So they're saving Robins, I presume, for extra time.

2:32:12 > 2:32:16Now, Blackmore can play left-back, so that's a straight switch.

2:32:16 > 2:32:19Manchester United's fans urging them to one last effort here.

2:32:19 > 2:32:21McClair..

2:32:21 > 2:32:23We're into stoppage time.

2:32:23 > 2:32:25Thomas, hounded by Robson,

2:32:25 > 2:32:27good enough to get away.

2:32:28 > 2:32:31You can see who's the more anxious over there - Alex Ferguson

2:32:31 > 2:32:33and Archie Knox both off the bench

2:32:33 > 2:32:34trying to retrieve the ball.

2:32:34 > 2:32:36Webb, Phelan.

2:32:39 > 2:32:40McClair.

2:32:40 > 2:32:42Wallace in the middle, so is Hughes.

2:32:42 > 2:32:46He couldn't get past Andy Thorn, but it is a corner.

2:32:46 > 2:32:47Now, then.

2:32:50 > 2:32:51Neil Webb will take it.

2:32:51 > 2:32:54Gary Pallister has come forward, so has Steve Bruce,

2:32:54 > 2:32:56so has Bryan Robson.

2:33:01 > 2:33:04And Geoff Thomas didn't have to do much apart from chest that down,

2:33:04 > 2:33:06and he's found Wright with a very good ball.

2:33:06 > 2:33:09And Gray wants to make a run, and so does Bright.

2:33:09 > 2:33:11Wright's keeping the ball for the moment.

2:33:11 > 2:33:12He's got options either way.

2:33:12 > 2:33:14It's still Wright.

2:33:14 > 2:33:16They're screaming for it on the right wing.

2:33:16 > 2:33:17Bright now.

2:33:19 > 2:33:22Still Mark Bright, he's going right across the line.

2:33:22 > 2:33:23He wants help again now.

2:33:23 > 2:33:24Thomas.

2:33:26 > 2:33:27Gray.

2:33:30 > 2:33:31Good turn by Gray.

2:33:32 > 2:33:35Well, what a finish that would have been.

2:33:35 > 2:33:37Just look how disturbed he is.

2:33:40 > 2:33:42And Andy Gray always likes to go

2:33:42 > 2:33:44for something out of the ordinary.

2:33:56 > 2:33:58Flag's up, referee says play on.

2:33:58 > 2:34:00McClair was in there, and so was Pemberton.

2:34:02 > 2:34:04This is a determined assault by Manchester United

2:34:04 > 2:34:07in the third minute of stoppage time

2:34:07 > 2:34:09to snatch the winning goal.

2:34:11 > 2:34:12Pallister's hobbling,

2:34:12 > 2:34:14but he's up there nevertheless.

2:34:14 > 2:34:16Pallister.

2:34:16 > 2:34:17Hughes! No.

2:34:20 > 2:34:22Trevor?

2:34:22 > 2:34:24Well, it'd have been a bit heartbreaking, I think,

2:34:24 > 2:34:27for Crystal Palace - any side, perhaps -

2:34:27 > 2:34:29to lose it now in these last few seconds.

2:34:29 > 2:34:31Lets them go into extra time and see who is going to

2:34:31 > 2:34:33conjure up perhaps the opening,

2:34:33 > 2:34:35or are we going to have another replay?

2:34:35 > 2:34:38It seems to be a saga this season, doesn't it?

2:34:38 > 2:34:40Certainly a very good second half,

2:34:40 > 2:34:42and there's the final whistle.

2:34:42 > 2:34:44Both managers now are going to do a lot of talking just to

2:34:44 > 2:34:47lift their side in these extra 30 minutes.

2:34:54 > 2:34:56It's United playing from left to right

2:34:56 > 2:34:58in the first period.

2:35:05 > 2:35:07Bryan Robson.

2:35:07 > 2:35:10I don't think Bobby Robson would want a replay here,

2:35:10 > 2:35:12would he, with England players involved?

2:35:12 > 2:35:15Because England are due to play Denmark on Tuesday, and there

2:35:15 > 2:35:18would be a replay of the FA Cup Final if required on Thursday here.

2:35:20 > 2:35:22So don't book that night out just yet.

2:35:22 > 2:35:23This is McClair.

2:35:27 > 2:35:28Ince.

2:35:28 > 2:35:30Good running on the far side by

2:35:30 > 2:35:32Clayton Blackmore, the substitute.

2:35:33 > 2:35:36Andy Gray went back with him.

2:35:36 > 2:35:37Just managed to get the ball away.

2:35:37 > 2:35:39Here's Wright.

2:35:39 > 2:35:41WHISTLE Foul by Bruce.

2:35:49 > 2:35:50Webb.

2:35:53 > 2:35:54O'Reilly, Salako, who's playing

2:35:54 > 2:35:56further forward now that Shaw

2:35:56 > 2:35:58is in an orthodox left-back position here.

2:35:58 > 2:36:00Salako is playing wide on the left,

2:36:00 > 2:36:02in Barber's old position.

2:36:02 > 2:36:04Phelan is challenging him.

2:36:06 > 2:36:07Wright!

2:36:07 > 2:36:09Goal!

2:36:09 > 2:36:10It's Ian Wright again.

2:36:10 > 2:36:13Palace are in front at 3-2...

2:36:16 > 2:36:18..and Steve Coppell,

2:36:18 > 2:36:21he's made one of the great substitutions.

2:36:21 > 2:36:24And the Palace players have been called back by the referee.

2:36:24 > 2:36:26It's a goal all right, but they've

2:36:26 > 2:36:28been called back from celebrating.

2:36:28 > 2:36:30Don't let me take it away from Wright - what a good finish -

2:36:30 > 2:36:34but it was interesting there. In the lines of current crowd control,

2:36:34 > 2:36:36Allan Gunn ran behind the goal

2:36:36 > 2:36:38and pulled them all back from the crowd.

2:36:38 > 2:36:40It's 3-2 to Crystal Palace.

2:36:40 > 2:36:43Ian Wright has scored his second

2:36:43 > 2:36:44in the 92nd minute.

2:36:44 > 2:36:47And as last year, we have a substitute

2:36:47 > 2:36:49who's come on and scored two goals.

2:36:49 > 2:36:52Just as Rush and McCall did.

2:36:54 > 2:36:56Here's McClair for Manchester United.

2:36:59 > 2:37:00It's Phelan.

2:37:02 > 2:37:05Appeals for handball. It's McClair again.

2:37:05 > 2:37:06And that's out.

2:37:06 > 2:37:08Well, Trevor, they've done it again.

2:37:08 > 2:37:10At least, they've taken the lead again,

2:37:10 > 2:37:11and they've got to bring on Robins now.

2:37:11 > 2:37:13Well, one substitution has

2:37:13 > 2:37:14meant that the other one is going

2:37:14 > 2:37:16to be brought on, as well.

2:37:16 > 2:37:17A really good cross

2:37:17 > 2:37:19from John Salako there,

2:37:19 > 2:37:22and Ian Wright getting in behind Stevie Bruce.

2:37:22 > 2:37:24He wondered whether Jim Leighton could get to the cross,

2:37:24 > 2:37:26but it was a really good, deep cross.

2:37:26 > 2:37:28Really, Steve Bruce just went

2:37:28 > 2:37:30to sleep for a couple of yards.

2:37:30 > 2:37:33Meantime, we're going to get the second Manchester United

2:37:33 > 2:37:36substitution. And Gary Pallister... CROWD JEER

2:37:36 > 2:37:39..who I feel has been struggling a little bit with an injury -

2:37:39 > 2:37:41I don't know whether the crowd would appreciate that,

2:37:41 > 2:37:43he was hobbling earlier -

2:37:43 > 2:37:44he's the man going off.

2:37:46 > 2:37:48And 20-year-old Mark Robins -

2:37:48 > 2:37:52they say he's got the goal-scoring touch just like Ian Wright,

2:37:52 > 2:37:54and he's proved it this season in the FA Cup.

2:37:54 > 2:37:58Can he do for Manchester United what Wright, the number 12,

2:37:58 > 2:38:00has done for Crystal Palace?

2:38:03 > 2:38:05Two minutes left in this first period,

2:38:05 > 2:38:06United still trail 3-2.

2:38:06 > 2:38:09And here's McClair with a chance to get the ball in, perhaps.

2:38:09 > 2:38:10There's three waiting.

2:38:13 > 2:38:15Hughes.

2:38:15 > 2:38:16Oh, a typical Mark Hughes effort.

2:38:19 > 2:38:22They'd have loved to see that one go in, the United fans.

2:38:22 > 2:38:25And it's a speciality of Mark Hughes, this, the bicycle kick.

2:38:25 > 2:38:28Really a great skill, but on this occasion wide of the goal.

2:38:28 > 2:38:29Well... HE LAUGHS

2:38:29 > 2:38:31..they voted Kenny Dalglish manager of the year,

2:38:31 > 2:38:33they gave Joe Royle a special reward,

2:38:33 > 2:38:34I'm sure both well-deserved.

2:38:34 > 2:38:36But I wonder what you'd say about the job

2:38:36 > 2:38:38Steve Coppell's done this year?

2:38:38 > 2:38:40And the whistle goes.

2:38:40 > 2:38:42There's still 15 minutes more.

2:38:42 > 2:38:44APPLAUSE

2:38:44 > 2:38:47Now, at this point the managers are not supposed to come on,

2:38:47 > 2:38:49but I can see Steve Coppell striding a few yards in

2:38:49 > 2:38:52to bark out some more instructions.

2:38:52 > 2:38:53And Alex Ferguson has not

2:38:53 > 2:38:55moved in muscle at the moment.

2:38:57 > 2:38:59They are 3-2 ahead,

2:38:59 > 2:39:01and their supporters are preparing

2:39:01 > 2:39:03for one of the great celebrations

2:39:03 > 2:39:04in South London.

2:39:04 > 2:39:07In fact, it's a South London boy who's put them in this position -

2:39:07 > 2:39:09Ian Wright, born in Woolwich.

2:39:13 > 2:39:15And I think it was Greenwich Borough he was playing for

2:39:15 > 2:39:17when he was first spotted by Crystal Palace,

2:39:17 > 2:39:20but certainly from humble origins.

2:39:20 > 2:39:23And his two goals have put them in a winning position.

2:39:23 > 2:39:24Can they hold on to it?

2:39:27 > 2:39:31And can Manchester United turn it round as yet?

2:39:35 > 2:39:36Webb.

2:39:38 > 2:39:40Wallace.

2:39:40 > 2:39:41And Robson's got a great run on here.

2:39:41 > 2:39:43Pemberton got to him just in time.

2:39:43 > 2:39:44This is Hughes.

2:39:44 > 2:39:46The danger's not over yet.

2:39:46 > 2:39:47Ince.

2:39:48 > 2:39:50Good effort!

2:39:50 > 2:39:51Oh, fine save by Nigel Martyn.

2:39:51 > 2:39:53APPLAUSE

2:39:56 > 2:39:58Well, when he was called upon there,

2:39:58 > 2:39:59he was right in line.

2:39:59 > 2:40:02It's a good shot, this, by Ince,

2:40:02 > 2:40:04and a good tip over.

2:40:04 > 2:40:07Now then, the corner by Danny Wallace

2:40:07 > 2:40:10Short to Webb.

2:40:10 > 2:40:12Wallace again.

2:40:12 > 2:40:13Hughes was in there with Bruce,

2:40:13 > 2:40:15so O'Reilly's header out.

2:40:15 > 2:40:16Ince.

2:40:20 > 2:40:21And here's Wright.

2:40:21 > 2:40:24He's away again, and it's three against two.

2:40:24 > 2:40:26He's got Gray in the middle and Bright on the far side,

2:40:26 > 2:40:28completely unmarked.

2:40:28 > 2:40:30Offside. Flag was up. It wouldn't have mattered,

2:40:30 > 2:40:34even though Andy Gray knows it was a bad piece of control.

2:40:36 > 2:40:37This is Webb. Robson's free

2:40:37 > 2:40:39if he can find him square.

2:40:39 > 2:40:40Wallace will.

2:40:43 > 2:40:45Hughes.

2:40:45 > 2:40:46McClair.

2:40:46 > 2:40:48Phelan out on the right.

2:40:48 > 2:40:50Salako tries to get to him and fails.

2:40:50 > 2:40:52It's Michael Phelan for United.

2:40:52 > 2:40:53Dipping shot.

2:40:53 > 2:40:54Beautifully tried.

2:40:54 > 2:40:56Oh, he's good at those.

2:40:56 > 2:40:58I remember one playing for England when he nearly scored.

2:40:58 > 2:41:00They gave Phelan a bit too much room actually.

2:41:00 > 2:41:02Salako dived in a bit there.

2:41:02 > 2:41:04Didn't get hold of things at all.

2:41:04 > 2:41:07And look where the keeper is. Six-yard line. Now, that's a dipper.

2:41:07 > 2:41:09And it just clips the roof of the net.

2:41:09 > 2:41:11Palace leading 3-2.

2:41:15 > 2:41:16Robson.

2:41:21 > 2:41:22Webb to Wallace.

2:41:24 > 2:41:27Hughes goes through the middle. Chance here for 3-3!

2:41:27 > 2:41:28Mark Hughes!

2:41:35 > 2:41:37He's scored his second of the game.

2:41:37 > 2:41:39And Manchester United have saved themselves.

2:41:46 > 2:41:49The ball just stepped through by Danny Wallace

2:41:49 > 2:41:52and the central defenders gave him too much space.

2:41:52 > 2:41:54O'Reilly wasn't close enough

2:41:54 > 2:41:57and Hughes steered it past Martyn.

2:41:57 > 2:41:59And so what Ian Wright has done for Palace,

2:41:59 > 2:42:02Mark Hughes has done for Manchester United.

2:42:02 > 2:42:04He's scored twice.

2:42:04 > 2:42:07And with just seven minutes of extra time to go,

2:42:07 > 2:42:09the score is 3-3.

2:42:14 > 2:42:18Webb for Manchester United with Robins making the forward run

2:42:18 > 2:42:20with O'Reilly marking him.

2:42:20 > 2:42:21And Robson's in support.

2:42:23 > 2:42:26And Robins finds a way back to Webb.

2:42:26 > 2:42:30And then Robins again. And Blackmore was in there.

2:42:30 > 2:42:33Well, are we going to come back on Thursday night for a replay?

2:42:33 > 2:42:35That's the next question.

2:42:35 > 2:42:38But you almost don't want to say anything now

2:42:38 > 2:42:39for fear of speaking too soon.

2:42:39 > 2:42:40It's Bright.

2:42:42 > 2:42:43And it's Blackmore.

2:42:43 > 2:42:44Goodness gracious.

2:42:44 > 2:42:46Webb.

2:42:46 > 2:42:48Defenders are all over the place. Robins.

2:42:54 > 2:42:56They will settle for the corner.

2:43:00 > 2:43:04Yes, there are plenty of players feeling the effects now.

2:43:08 > 2:43:11Webb to take the corner. He's pulled it back to Wallace.

2:43:11 > 2:43:13Blackmore is square.

2:43:13 > 2:43:14Clayton Blackmore.

2:43:14 > 2:43:17Goodness me, that hit the roof of the net as well.

2:43:17 > 2:43:19It is a long-range speciality.

2:43:20 > 2:43:23And that one, Nigel Martyn was beaten.

2:43:23 > 2:43:27And I think we're going to see a second Palace substitution, are we?

2:43:28 > 2:43:31Now then, David Madden.

2:43:33 > 2:43:36A Londoner. Midfield player, essentially.

2:43:37 > 2:43:39Comes on with three minutes to go.

2:43:42 > 2:43:43Bruce.

2:43:46 > 2:43:49Hughes. Robins is to his right.

2:43:49 > 2:43:51Hughes has led the line really well, I have to say.

2:43:51 > 2:43:53He's had a terrific match.

2:43:53 > 2:43:56Full of energy and determination

2:43:56 > 2:43:58and finishing power.

2:43:58 > 2:44:01WHISTLE Oh, now then.

2:44:01 > 2:44:03The ball was nowhere near when that foul was committed.

2:44:03 > 2:44:07It was John Pemberton on Danny Wallace.

2:44:07 > 2:44:09And a little bit of anger creeping in there.

2:44:09 > 2:44:13But it was a rather strange thing for Pemberton to do,

2:44:13 > 2:44:15because he didn't seem to need to give away a free kick

2:44:15 > 2:44:17in that position.

2:44:17 > 2:44:19And there's a few words being exchanged

2:44:19 > 2:44:21between the two players, as well.

2:44:21 > 2:44:24Now, Neil Webb and Paul Ince have placed the ball.

2:44:28 > 2:44:32And they're...just waiting for the referee to move away.

2:44:36 > 2:44:37Webb.

2:44:37 > 2:44:38Robson!

2:44:38 > 2:44:40Goodness me.

2:44:41 > 2:44:44I think his expression says it all there.

2:44:44 > 2:44:46The expression does say it,

2:44:46 > 2:44:49because really that was a typical Bryan Robson position.

2:44:49 > 2:44:52Hands on his hips there, at the edge of the area. Off he goes.

2:44:52 > 2:44:54It was perfectly weighted.

2:44:54 > 2:44:57He just couldn't push off with those heavy calves

2:44:57 > 2:44:59to get over the ball to head it down.

2:44:59 > 2:45:01And in fact just cleared the crossbar.

2:45:01 > 2:45:03But that was a good opportunity.

2:45:08 > 2:45:10Thomas against McClair.

2:45:14 > 2:45:15Corner.

2:45:15 > 2:45:17Well, Palace would settle for that.

2:45:17 > 2:45:19We've had the 30 minutes of extra time.

2:45:19 > 2:45:22We're into time being added on for stoppages,

2:45:22 > 2:45:26and the substitute, David Madden, will take the corner.

2:45:26 > 2:45:30Thorn and O'Reilly to take up their normal near-post positions.

2:45:31 > 2:45:35And Pardew just about on the penalty spot.

2:45:44 > 2:45:46Thorn's flick.

2:45:46 > 2:45:48And... Oh, Mark Bright, it was.

2:45:49 > 2:45:52With Jim Leighton scrambling it behind.

2:45:52 > 2:45:53Or did he? United are arguing.

2:45:53 > 2:45:57The referee's given a corner, and they don't think it was.

2:45:58 > 2:46:01They're saying it went straight past from Mark Bright.

2:46:01 > 2:46:03You can probably see from this,

2:46:03 > 2:46:05well, it hit the post, didn't it?

2:46:05 > 2:46:07Corner again.

2:46:07 > 2:46:08Madden.

2:46:12 > 2:46:15Thorn won't reach it this time. WHISTLE BLOWS

2:46:15 > 2:46:20And the referee has blown, and the FA Cup Final of 1990 ends in a draw.

2:46:22 > 2:46:26Mark Hughes with two goals for Manchester United

2:46:26 > 2:46:31as Alex Ferguson's team save themselves in extra time.

2:46:31 > 2:46:34And Ian Wright with two goals for Crystal Palace,

2:46:34 > 2:46:38who were 1-0 up, 2-1 down, 3-2 up,

2:46:38 > 2:46:42and whose fans in the end applaud not just their own players,

2:46:42 > 2:46:45like Gary O'Reilly,

2:46:45 > 2:46:48but everybody on the pitch, I would think.

2:46:48 > 2:46:53For a stirring, gripping encounter.

2:46:54 > 2:46:57When you came on, you made quite a difference.

2:46:57 > 2:47:00I was fortunate enough to get a good knock-down from Mark

2:47:00 > 2:47:02and I just cut inside him slightly.

2:47:02 > 2:47:04It's good to have a first touch in the box

2:47:04 > 2:47:05because that kind of thing happens.

2:47:05 > 2:47:08So, to score was a bit of a bonus, really.

2:47:08 > 2:47:10And then the goal in extra time?

2:47:10 > 2:47:12Well, you know, you think you do enough in extra time.

2:47:12 > 2:47:14But, like, all credit to them.

2:47:14 > 2:47:16It was early in extra time, that's what it was.

2:47:16 > 2:47:18So, they always had a chance and all credit to them,

2:47:18 > 2:47:19they never stopped coming at us.

2:47:19 > 2:47:21In the end, they got what they deserved.

2:47:21 > 2:47:23Did you think, though, that you'd won it?

2:47:23 > 2:47:26Well, as it was going on, they've done a lot of play.

2:47:26 > 2:47:29They played lovely football into the front men and all that.

2:47:29 > 2:47:30They always had a chance

2:47:30 > 2:47:33and then if you give Sparky half a chance, he took it.

2:47:33 > 2:47:36Sparky Hughes, half a chance and you took it.

2:47:36 > 2:47:38Yeah, we left it a bit late

2:47:38 > 2:47:41but, thankfully, we've got another chance on Thursday.

2:47:41 > 2:47:45If it's half as good as that game, I hope everybody enjoyed it.

2:47:45 > 2:47:47- Did you both enjoy it? - Oh, yeah.- Well, yeah.

2:47:47 > 2:47:50- Obviously, we would have liked to have won.- Yeah, exactly.

2:47:50 > 2:47:52But it was a good game and it was played in the right spirit,

2:47:52 > 2:47:53which is the main thing.

2:47:53 > 2:47:56The inevitable question, did you think you had it won?

2:47:56 > 2:47:58No, never ever.

2:47:58 > 2:48:00I knew a few of our legs were going, obviously,

2:48:00 > 2:48:02a few United legs were going.

2:48:02 > 2:48:04But you just have the mentality when you are in front,

2:48:04 > 2:48:06you just sit back a little bit.

2:48:06 > 2:48:07I was always concerned.

2:48:07 > 2:48:10I was always worried about just nicking one.

2:48:10 > 2:48:12That's the way it happened.

2:48:12 > 2:48:14Alex, let me ask you.

2:48:14 > 2:48:16I mean, did you think it was lost?

2:48:16 > 2:48:18Yeah, when you're down in extra time,

2:48:18 > 2:48:21in the second period of extra time, you do.

2:48:21 > 2:48:22It's a worrying time.

2:48:22 > 2:48:25But I've got to give the lads credit,

2:48:25 > 2:48:28they kept at Palace, they just kept going and kept going.

2:48:28 > 2:48:30I ended up with McClair right back.

2:48:30 > 2:48:31Ince, third right.

2:48:31 > 2:48:34Webb, I think he was playing...

2:48:34 > 2:48:36Double centre, treble centre forward.

2:48:36 > 2:48:39I mean, it was just gay abandon.

2:48:39 > 2:48:44- I think that Steve will agree, it's...- A manager's nightmare.

2:48:44 > 2:48:46It's a manager's nightmare.

2:48:46 > 2:48:48I think the goals were, he'll probably agree,

2:48:48 > 2:48:49losing goals the way we did.

2:48:49 > 2:48:51But they made it. I made it.

2:48:51 > 2:48:54The substitution, when you brought Ian Wright on,

2:48:54 > 2:48:55that changed things, didn't it?

2:48:55 > 2:48:58Yeah, you know, I always had that up my sleeve

2:48:58 > 2:49:00and I knew Ian is a match-winner.

2:49:00 > 2:49:02That's why he was there.

2:49:02 > 2:49:06He wasn't 100% fit, but he just showed what he could do, you know?

2:49:07 > 2:49:10At the start of the game, I think if he had started,

2:49:10 > 2:49:11he would have waned a little bit.

2:49:11 > 2:49:13Whereas coming on fresh,

2:49:13 > 2:49:16he made such an impact and he's such a buoyant character.

2:49:16 > 2:49:18It was exactly as we thought it would go.

2:49:18 > 2:49:20You're meant to be going to the West Indies on Wednesday?

2:49:20 > 2:49:23- That would be a good idea, wouldn't it?- I insist you go!

2:49:23 > 2:49:25You can't break promises.
