:08:17. > :08:22.It should be a great race here today.
:08:22. > :08:26.Well, every year this sight is one that inspires thousands to come
:08:26. > :08:29.part. Those who have been here before, they know what it is about,
:08:29. > :08:32.but it doesn't diminish the experience they are going to have.
:08:32. > :08:37.Good Good conditions this year. It is about 13 Celsius at the start.
:08:37. > :08:42.It is very, very light breeze and the sun just trying to breakthrough
:08:42. > :08:47.the clouds and that means we should have good conditions for the elite
:08:47. > :08:57.racers. It will be the women to get us underway. A strong field with
:08:57. > :08:58.
:08:58. > :09:03.good British representation from Jo Pavey and Helen Clitheroe. A good
:09:03. > :09:09.start as they campaigned against for the election to the Olympics
:09:09. > :09:14.next year. It is important they get a good run today. They have tough
:09:14. > :09:18.competition against them. A quality field, but we have got a real
:09:18. > :09:24.serious British presence. I'm interested to see how Helen
:09:24. > :09:28.Clitheroe runs today. We know Jo Pavey came here a few years ago and
:09:28. > :09:34.finished third. I wonder if Jo can go any better than that this time?
:09:34. > :09:44.They are going to have certificate suss competition -- serious
:09:44. > :09:59.
:09:59. > :10:04.mile is always a bit quick. They have to be careful they don't
:10:04. > :10:09.overcook it. There is a fair few people in front of them. It will
:10:09. > :10:15.take a long time for them to cross the start line. Jo Pavey keen to
:10:15. > :10:20.get things underway and comes here in good shape, thinking she can run
:10:20. > :10:23.well and she will be running the New York Marathon and hoping to get
:10:23. > :10:27.the qualifying time for the Olympics. She has it, but she wants
:10:27. > :10:31.to run in New York. There are four or five women who are going to
:10:31. > :10:35.qualify in the next few months leading into next year so it is
:10:35. > :10:41.important that these next couple of races go well, particularly today.
:10:41. > :10:48.So the warm up is well underway. It won't be long before they get
:10:48. > :10:55.their turn. Even Nell McAndrew going through
:10:55. > :10:59.her routine. Full of smiles as ever. No doubt, there will be a swift
:10:59. > :11:09.performance from Nell. She is a very, very good runner.
:11:09. > :11:14.
:11:14. > :11:19.Joe pavy is at the back of that group. Unfortunately, there is Jo
:11:19. > :11:29.Pavey. Helen Clitheroe running strongly and staying in position
:11:29. > :11:32.
:11:32. > :11:35.there in her debut in the half marathon. She has had injury
:11:35. > :11:40.problems for 12 months and she was hoping and indeed I think expecting
:11:40. > :11:49.to put in a good performance today. It is early stages, but not good
:11:49. > :11:59.signs at this point. It is a really poignant day for the
:11:59. > :12:31.
:12:31. > :12:39.favourite in the green vest and mo Farah. They are on their way.
:12:39. > :12:45.All of the training, all of the preparation now put into practise.
:12:45. > :12:55.All of the stories set to unfold, all of the millions of pounds to be
:12:55. > :12:58.
:12:58. > :13:06.raised for charity and we hope as well a performance or two that Mo
:13:06. > :13:11.Farah might have an eye on. This Kenyan runner has opened up a
:13:11. > :13:17.huge gap. 27 minutes of running only on the clock. Much less than
:13:17. > :13:21.half-way and there was alstrong group, -- a strong group, included
:13:21. > :13:26.in that group was Helen Clitheroe and Jo Pavey and suddenly they find
:13:26. > :13:30.themselves repofd from the lead -- removed from the leader and away
:13:30. > :13:39.down the road, but they have probably been taken by surprise the
:13:39. > :13:46.way the former Commonwealth champion is running. The two
:13:46. > :13:54.British athletes are locked together.
:13:54. > :13:58.The field has broken up early. Jo Pavey is running with Helen
:13:58. > :14:01.Clitheroe. I am sure she wants to make sure she finishes of Helen
:14:02. > :14:08.Clitheroe because that would be unexpected if it were to be the
:14:08. > :14:12.other way around. There you see the desmation caused by the Jamaican.
:14:12. > :14:17.There is a big, big gap at this early stage. They are going to turn
:14:17. > :14:21.the corner and head towards South Shields, but at this early stage
:14:22. > :14:28.that's a large lead. The women are at the half-way point
:14:28. > :14:37.and the men and the masses have just got underway, just past the
:14:37. > :14:43.the first mile. You can see and Andy Vernon in the height vest.
:14:43. > :14:53.There is a group of talented Kenyans including the London
:14:53. > :15:12.
:15:12. > :15:18.supporting them already. The Kenyan has been pouring it on.
:15:18. > :15:22.It was the mile before that where she had done the damage. She is
:15:22. > :15:24.running very, very strongly. This is really quick running from the
:15:24. > :15:30.Kenyan and something which we haven't seen for quite a highly
:15:30. > :15:35.there. So perhaps taking the field by surprise.
:15:35. > :15:41.Josh Cassidy of Canada held the lead since the beginning. This is
:15:41. > :15:46.his fifth Great North Run, he won it before in 2008. He has never
:15:46. > :15:55.been out of the top three and he will win it by a mile here today. A
:15:55. > :16:00.very fast time, indeed. Josh Cassidy is our first winner.
:16:00. > :16:10.Absolutely exhausted, but this man developing into one of the finest
:16:10. > :16:12.
:16:12. > :16:17.road racers of his generation in a wheelchair.
:16:17. > :16:27.Another fast time for the French athlete. The conditions have been
:16:27. > :16:32.
:16:32. > :16:39.ideal for fast wheelchair racing. He couldn't catch Cassidy though.
:16:39. > :16:46.The Jamaican running strongly now. She based herself in Japan Japan
:16:46. > :16:50.after she won the Commonwealth Games. Her manager has been telling
:16:51. > :17:00.us that she has been running well and had a chance, but I don't think
:17:01. > :17:02.
:17:02. > :17:08.he thought this. Now Shelley Woods has broken away from Amanda McGrory.
:17:08. > :17:13.She has ridden beautifully here. Just outside McGrory's course
:17:13. > :17:21.record. Shelly Woods on her own. Nobody else to be seen anywhere
:17:21. > :17:27.within 400 or 500. The gaps here are really
:17:27. > :17:35.substantial. The former winner struggling up the road here. The
:17:35. > :17:41.pace that the Jamaican has set. If she were to maintain the pace it
:17:41. > :17:51.would be one of the best runs ever. The course record belongs to Paula
:17:51. > :17:55.Radcliffe, but she is going quickly. The leading man in the black vest
:17:55. > :18:00.vest. In the green vest there is the London Marathon winner and
:18:00. > :18:06.behind him the former world marathon champion. Those two have
:18:06. > :18:16.been taken by surprise. There is good track speed athletes ahead of
:18:16. > :18:35.
:18:35. > :18:40.them. They are forcing the pace a thousands cross heading down
:18:40. > :18:45.towards South Shields the Red Arrows do their familiar fly-past.
:18:45. > :18:55.On this occasion they will be remembering Red Four performing the
:18:55. > :19:09.
:19:09. > :19:14.here and adding to the sense of occasion as ever. Look at this bren
:19:14. > :19:21.darks there is a -- Brenda, there is a real push forward. That is
:19:21. > :19:24.unexpected? The two more renowned Kenyan distance runners are behind
:19:24. > :19:30.him. They will have been taken by surprise. Look at how fast he is
:19:30. > :19:35.moving. This is a huge burst. He is trying to get away from him. I
:19:35. > :19:39.wonder why doesn't he wait longer. It is early to be attacking as
:19:39. > :19:46.aggressively as this. Just using the hill there and the
:19:46. > :19:51.drop down to the pool area. That is early to be doing this. He has a
:19:51. > :20:01.lead there and he has opened it up quickly. He doesn't have a lot of
:20:01. > :20:02.
:20:02. > :20:06.pedigree over this distance. He is looking comfortable. They
:20:06. > :20:16.wouldn't want that gap to get too big, but once somebody is away, it
:20:16. > :20:26.
:20:26. > :20:33.exceptional. She is looking as though she is heading for a good
:20:33. > :20:36.time. Look at those mile splits. She is going extremely well.
:20:36. > :20:40.That's good running. This is going to be a really strong performance.
:20:40. > :20:47.She has to keep going over the last three miles and it will be tough.
:20:48. > :20:51.She is all on her own, but she will get support.
:20:51. > :20:55.This is a tough part of the course, and if she is going to get the fast
:20:55. > :21:05.time she has got to keep the pressure on here, but she's going
:21:05. > :21:06.
:21:06. > :21:09.well. Well this little group now is
:21:09. > :21:18.working together. Helen Clitheroe is running a fairly solid
:21:18. > :21:23.performance. She raced yesterday in the Great City Game. I am not sure
:21:23. > :21:27.Jo Pavey would be too happy to see Helen at this point.
:21:27. > :21:30.They are heading for something around 70 minutes and I am sure Jo
:21:30. > :21:35.would have been looking for something a little quicker than
:21:35. > :21:38.that. But as a debut for Helen Clitheroe, it is a really solid
:21:38. > :21:46.performance and she is a good runner, Helen Clitheroe. She had a
:21:46. > :21:50.busy year. She started out with idoors and completed a full outdoor
:21:50. > :21:58.season on the track and she is having a good run today.
:21:58. > :22:02.The break wasn't long lasting. The bronze medallist in the World
:22:02. > :22:06.Championships a couple of years ago and then fifth place this year and
:22:06. > :22:11.he looks like the track runner he is, he is starting to put the
:22:11. > :22:21.pressure on. He is beginning to look more relaxed the faster he
:22:21. > :22:28.
:22:28. > :22:32.goes. She knows it has been a great
:22:32. > :22:38.performance. She must be aware of how fast she is going. The clock is
:22:38. > :22:45.ticking quickly. We were thinking she might get under 67 minutes. Not
:22:45. > :22:50.too many women, only nine have run under 67 minutes ever in the
:22:50. > :22:53.history of half marathon running. She is producing the best
:22:53. > :22:57.performance since she won the Commonwealth title.
:22:57. > :23:02.And the big surprise is the way she has done T she has runaway from the
:23:02. > :23:12.field. Put world-class athletes behind her and showed her training
:23:12. > :23:19.
:23:19. > :23:27.in Japan and back in Kenya has really worked for her this time.
:23:27. > :23:31.She She became a mother a few years ago. She has won - well, you can't
:23:31. > :23:38.see her competitors. They are so far behind.
:23:38. > :23:45.It is going to be outside 67 minutes, but one of the quickest
:23:45. > :23:52.runs. She wins the 2011 Great North Run. A brilliant run from the
:23:52. > :23:59.little Kenyan. Really, really world-class road running and she
:23:59. > :24:04.looks behind, nobody in sight. Only a couple of weeks ago Mo Farah
:24:04. > :24:12.was racing this man on the track. Mo was second in that race. He just
:24:12. > :24:16.failed to win the gold medal. A good performance by him there, but
:24:16. > :24:21.today he really is running well. He looks more relaxed the faster he
:24:21. > :24:26.goes. He's stretching now away from the field and if you look at his
:24:26. > :24:32.pedigree, his time is over 10,000, his time is over 5,000 meters, you
:24:32. > :24:37.knew he would run a good one and this is.
:24:37. > :24:40.The winner in 2009 having to settle for second place. It has been
:24:40. > :24:45.another good run for her. Her father died back in May and she
:24:45. > :24:51.said that really affected her. She has got his name tattooed on the
:24:51. > :24:55.inside of her arm. I am sure she has got a few thoughts for him as
:24:55. > :24:59.she enjoys the plaudits from the crowd and a quick time as well. Not
:24:59. > :25:09.too far outside her personal best, but today she was a long way behind
:25:09. > :25:12.
:25:12. > :25:17.the winner, but a good performance from the Portuguese athlete.
:25:17. > :25:21.Jo Pavey in fourth place. It is great to see her back from that
:25:21. > :25:31.injury problem. Now she can go off to the New York Marathon and run
:25:31. > :25:33.
:25:33. > :25:39.well there and hopefully, this Portuguese runner has run well.
:25:39. > :25:47.Coming on through there. Third place for her. In the the distance
:25:47. > :25:57.we can see both Jo Pavey in fourth place and a great debut in the half
:25:57. > :25:58.
:25:58. > :26:02.marathon by Helen Clitheroe. Jo really had to work hard, not
:26:02. > :26:05.only to close that gap, but to put some distance between herself and
:26:05. > :26:08.Helen Clitheroe. She looks at the watch, I think she will be
:26:08. > :26:15.disappointed with that. It is a solid run. She might have been
:26:16. > :26:19.looking for something quicker. No doubt these in marathon training.
:26:20. > :26:29.Helen Clitheroe is very happy. She crosses the line in her first
:26:30. > :26:52.
:26:52. > :26:58.marathon and that's a promising This is the leader. He knows he is
:26:58. > :27:08.on for a good time. He just has to keep the pressure on. I have been
:27:08. > :27:08.
:27:08. > :27:12.so impressed with the way he performed today. We look at the
:27:12. > :27:16.second placed. What a superb run. One of the
:27:16. > :27:21.quickest ever half marathons the world has seen, never mind the
:27:21. > :27:28.Great North Run. It will be inside the course record, 59 minutes and
:27:28. > :27:36.05 seconds. But we have a new course record
:27:36. > :27:40.holder. And it is under 59 minutes. What a performance from the Kenya.
:27:40. > :27:45.No wonder he is pleased. That will certainly send a very signal to an
:27:45. > :27:55.awful lot of people that this man could be one to be reckoned with at
:27:55. > :28:00.
