:00:37. > :00:45.Good evening. If it is drama you are after, look no further, this cup has

:00:46. > :00:51.had it more in recent seasons, and the first round lived up to its

:00:52. > :00:57.billing, as 22 Championship sides put their reputations on the line.

:00:58. > :01:00.It is all about momentum, just ask Steve Claridge, who has been there

:01:01. > :01:01.and done it. Here is what is on offer.

:01:02. > :01:07.and done it. Here is what is on Having got their season back up and

:01:08. > :01:15.running with a draw at Blackburn on Friday, Cardiff faced a testing time

:01:16. > :01:20.against Coventry tonight. We have the best of the action coming up. MK

:01:21. > :01:25.Dons met Wimbledon for only the second time on Tuesday evening, we

:01:26. > :01:32.have extended highlights of a fierce encounter. Carlisle produced one of

:01:33. > :01:38.the shocks of the first round, having disposed of Blackburn last

:01:39. > :01:45.season. We see how they got on against Derby County on Monday. And,

:01:46. > :01:47.we have all the latest from another terrific first round, including a

:01:48. > :02:00.few surprises along the way. Before we get to tonight's match,

:02:01. > :02:01.last night's incredible game as Dagenham and Redbridge took on

:02:02. > :02:15.Brentford. Everything going to plan, form and

:02:16. > :02:19.status as Stuart Dallas at Brentford in control with two goals inside

:02:20. > :02:26.nine minutes. You would be forgiven for thinking, nothing to see here,

:02:27. > :02:32.printed appeared to be cruising. But Dagenham hit back with a quality

:02:33. > :02:37.goal, Ashley Hemmings who cross, and George Porter with his first for the

:02:38. > :02:48.club. Then, the downpour, and with it an own goal. Brentford kept 20

:02:49. > :02:52.clean sheets in the league last season, their defence rarely as wide

:02:53. > :03:01.open as this, with Ashley Chambers racing clear. Dagenham back within a

:03:02. > :03:06.goal. Five goals in the first half. Andrew Bukhari scored the best of

:03:07. > :03:12.the game to make it 3-3. Seven minutes from time, Brentford were

:03:13. > :03:19.back in front, Andre Gray had his first goal for Brentford. It was not

:03:20. > :03:24.to be the winner. 90 minutes on the clock, Ashley Hemmings looped in a

:03:25. > :03:29.cross shot, forcing extra time for a club who had never when a tie in the

:03:30. > :03:34.League Cup. Extra time can be cagey, negative, dull, but not in this

:03:35. > :03:40.game. How is this for a Finnish? Montell Moore with his first senior

:03:41. > :03:49.goal, 5-4, Brentford. Jamie Coulson has seen more than his share of

:03:50. > :03:54.League Cup ties, this his 750th UK senior game. Level again. Dagenham

:03:55. > :04:03.had not yet led. They did when Ashley Hemmings fired them 6-5

:04:04. > :04:10.clear. Harlee Dean's goal produced a 6-6 scoreline. The last was between

:04:11. > :04:16.Tranmere and Newcastle 23 days ago. Next, penalties. The Brentford

:04:17. > :04:21.goalkeeper of the matchwinner, saving twice. He saved here from

:04:22. > :04:27.Ashley Chambers. Kevin O'Connor scored the decisive kick, in his

:04:28. > :04:33.501st appearance. He will never have played a game like this.

:04:34. > :04:39.After ten minutes, I thought it could be an onslaught, but we showed

:04:40. > :04:43.really good character, got back into the game, scored some decent goals.

:04:44. > :04:48.Really pleased about the goal-scoring, you expect to win the

:04:49. > :04:53.game after scoring six, but disappointed about conceding. The

:04:54. > :04:58.neutral will have enjoyed it. Disappointed in terms of the game,

:04:59. > :05:03.we were in good control in the first half, we made some basic errors and

:05:04. > :05:10.poor decisions, and it became a context -- contest. We were in

:05:11. > :05:15.control, and we must learn to be more clinical.

:05:16. > :05:21.He is not wrong, for the neutral, and incredible game. We can analyse

:05:22. > :05:27.the defending, but we do not have enough time, and it will take away

:05:28. > :05:33.from a spectacle. It was brilliant. Sometimes, you get caught up in the

:05:34. > :05:37.moment. Tactics and systems and whatever you set out to do go out

:05:38. > :05:42.the window. A wonderful spectacle for everybody. If you were either

:05:43. > :05:52.manager, do you bother analysing what went on? You can make half of

:05:53. > :05:57.your team feel like $1 million and the other half of your team feel

:05:58. > :06:04.like they had an awful time. The Brentford manager will think, we get

:06:05. > :06:08.ourselves in a great position, see it through. If we are dominating,

:06:09. > :06:14.keep it. The Dagenham manager will say, related, it took six goals to

:06:15. > :06:24.get ahead, but it shows the character. Cardiff are adjusting to

:06:25. > :06:28.life back in before ball league, but they faced a tricky cup tie against

:06:29. > :06:33.Coventry. Coventry made four changes.

:06:34. > :06:39.A senior debut for Jack Finch. Eight changes for Cardiff, including a

:06:40. > :06:45.debut for Simon Moore, the goalkeeper.

:06:46. > :06:52.Coventry do not have a good recent record at this early stage of the

:06:53. > :07:00.League Cup, knocked out in the first round in four of the last five

:07:01. > :07:08.seasons. Cardiff lead. Less than four minutes played. The

:07:09. > :07:16.Championship side are in front. The long ball forward. Nicky Maynard

:07:17. > :07:19.getting in behind the defence. And then, confusion between the

:07:20. > :07:25.defenders, they both went for the ball. It allowed Edo Bergstrom a

:07:26. > :07:29.free shot on goal. There is the challenge between the defenders.

:07:30. > :07:56.Cardiff are in front. Coventry have given the ball away

:07:57. > :08:21.far too often in the early exchanges.

:08:22. > :08:37.Pushed away by Lee Burge. A good attacking move by Cardiff. Lee Burge

:08:38. > :08:43.able to push it behind. A bitter dispute between the club's owners

:08:44. > :08:50.and the supporters. Cardiff City can empathise with that, having their

:08:51. > :09:12.own owner that did's that they do not particularly admire.

:09:13. > :09:22.Punched away by Lee Burge. Jazzi Barnum-Bobb had made a good run, but

:09:23. > :09:32.Bo-Kyung Kim ignored it and went for goal himself. The attendance is

:09:33. > :09:51.poor, as we saw in the first half, not many in, 1382.

:09:52. > :10:05.Josh McQuoid with the header. Nothing to trouble Simon Moore in

:10:06. > :10:09.the Cardiff goal. There is the Coventry captain, who scored a

:10:10. > :10:14.couple at the weekend, but he picked up a knock, not able to play to

:10:15. > :10:22.night. It is a very young Coventry side. Looking to fight their way

:10:23. > :10:30.back into this match. Straight at Simon Moore. Possibly Coventry's

:10:31. > :10:47.best chance I far. Jim O'Brien got eight goals at Barnsley.

:10:48. > :11:11.Lee Burge with the save. Still, Cardiff cannot find the second goal.

:11:12. > :11:18.He cannot get the shot on target. Danny Swanson advancing forward at

:11:19. > :11:44.pace. It is in by Kadeem Harris. Cardiff

:11:45. > :11:50.City get a second goal. Surely, it is a goal that takes them through to

:11:51. > :11:55.the second round. Kadeem Harris and Ryan Haynes going for the cross. I

:11:56. > :12:02.am wondering whether the final touch came off the Coventry defender. It

:12:03. > :12:10.may just have been a touch from Ryan Haynes there. Yes, it is an own

:12:11. > :12:25.goal, Ryan Haynes has put into his own net.

:12:26. > :12:38.Coventry have a goal back, Shaun Miller. We could be in for a

:12:39. > :12:42.rip-roaring finish now. Ryan Haynes had scored the own goal a few

:12:43. > :12:45.minutes earlier, with a peach of a cross. Shaun Miller holds Coventry)

:12:46. > :12:52.into the match. It is a corner kick, it came off

:12:53. > :13:12.Matthew Connolly. The last chance, maybe, the

:13:13. > :13:21.Coventry. It was only just wide from Andy Webster. Andy Webster with a

:13:22. > :13:26.glancing header. Declan John was on the post.

:13:27. > :13:32.It got a bit nervous for Cardiff, but considering the changes made,

:13:33. > :13:36.they are through to the second round, how will be manager reflect

:13:37. > :13:41.on it? For the first hour, they were really fluent. When you make that

:13:42. > :13:47.many changes, sometimes it works, sometimes it does not. It worked in

:13:48. > :13:51.their case. There are few sides who can dominate for 90 minutes, so you

:13:52. > :13:58.have to make the most of your period in the ascendancy. All of a sudden,

:13:59. > :14:03.there was an excellent opportunity for Coventry to get back. This is

:14:04. > :14:09.what the manager needed, and early start. Nicky Maynard, looks to play

:14:10. > :14:15.off the last man, he holds it up, a little flick. They could have done

:14:16. > :14:23.more defensively, but it is a good finish. This made it 2-0.

:14:24. > :14:29.Unfortunate from a Coventry perspective, that it is a bold

:14:30. > :14:37.worked goal. If Ryan Haynes does not score that, Kadeem Harris does. You

:14:38. > :14:41.are causing people problems when you get in behind. It is a bond of full

:14:42. > :14:48.ball in. When you are facing your own goal, you have to try to make

:14:49. > :14:53.the challenge. The Coventry manager gave had three debuts, some young

:14:54. > :15:00.faces, but they grew with confidence. They had a chance at a

:15:01. > :15:05.pivotal moment. Yes, at 1-0 down, they were just coming back, this was

:15:06. > :15:11.a super chance for Shaun Miller. He tries to clip it rather than lifting

:15:12. > :15:18.get over the goalkeeper, and he gets right under it. That was at 1-0,

:15:19. > :15:23.they were coming back into the game. At 1-1, it could have been

:15:24. > :15:28.different. The Coventry manager is the favourite to take over at

:15:29. > :15:32.Huddersfield, but thankfully for Coventry fans, he says he is happy

:15:33. > :15:36.at the club, and he has got a long-term project, and he is willing

:15:37. > :15:43.to see it through. Encouraging news for Coventry fans. One of the

:15:44. > :15:49.standout ties of the first round was not for the faint-hearted, with MK

:15:50. > :15:53.Dons at home to Wimbledon. They won their only previous meeting two

:15:54. > :16:02.years ago. MK Dons made two changes, Daniel Powell and Benik Afobe coming

:16:03. > :16:06.in. One change for Wimbledon, Mark Phillips coming in. None of the

:16:07. > :16:07.Wimbledon squad featured in the only previous encounter between the sides

:16:08. > :16:24.two years ago. A 2-2 draw for Wimbledon in their

:16:25. > :16:31.league opener at the weekend, coming from behind to lead 2-1 before

:16:32. > :16:38.conceding a late equaliser, at home to Shrewsbury. A good save, but the

:16:39. > :16:47.rebound for Sean Rigg... He will be kicking himself, the first chance

:16:48. > :16:58.was the most inviting. A great save by David Martin.

:16:59. > :17:17.Wimbledon have put everybody apart from Matt Tubbs back to defend this.

:17:18. > :17:27.It is in. It is a crafty backheel from Kyle McFadzean. James Shea

:17:28. > :17:30.beaten at his near post. He would not have expected this kind of

:17:31. > :17:37.finish, especially from a centre half, it is brilliant from Kyle

:17:38. > :17:39.McFadzean. As cheeky as they come. Two goals in two games for the big

:17:40. > :18:01.number five of MK Dons. Not quite sufficient, although I

:18:02. > :18:06.think David Martin helped it on its way. Adebayo Akinfenwa continues to

:18:07. > :18:36.be a handful. doubled their lead, four minutes

:18:37. > :18:41.into the second half. Already, this game may be beyond Wimbledon. A good

:18:42. > :18:49.early ball from Ben Reeves, and with Barry Fuller backpedalling, he sized

:18:50. > :18:51.up the opportunity, James Shea moved to his left, as Daniel Powell fired

:18:52. > :19:10.it to his right. A very important save. James Shea

:19:11. > :19:18.just about keeps Wimbledon in this one. It is a fabulous run from

:19:19. > :19:25.Daniel Powell, and when it came to Ben Reeves, the angle was tight. But

:19:26. > :19:44.for James Shea, it would have been game over. That is it. Benik Afobe

:19:45. > :19:47.puts this game beyond any doubt. It is not an incident that Alan Bennett

:19:48. > :19:54.will look back on with any great fondness. An assured finish from the

:19:55. > :20:11.man on loan for the season from Arsenal. 7174, tonight's attendance.

:20:12. > :20:21.It is off the line. Alan Bennett, who made the mistake for MK Dons'

:20:22. > :20:32.third goal, was on hand to clear it off the line.

:20:33. > :20:43.The chance has gone. Blogs by Kyle McFadzean. It would not have changed

:20:44. > :20:46.the outcome of the game, but it would have reduced the arrears and

:20:47. > :20:54.at least provided some kind of consolation.

:20:55. > :21:00.Somehow, it stayed out. If anybody deserves a goal in blue, it is

:21:01. > :21:13.Adebayo Akinfenwa. Wimbledon have had more than a few

:21:14. > :21:16.opportunities tonight. Adebayo Akinfenwa's header struck his own

:21:17. > :21:37.player. A penalty. He was tripped by Dean

:21:38. > :21:41.Lewington. Wimbledon have a perfect chance to get the consolation goal

:21:42. > :21:48.after all. No doubt about that. Matt Tubbs won it, and he will take it.

:21:49. > :21:56.It might be the last kick of the game, deep into the third minute of

:21:57. > :22:07.added time. The noise from behind the goal... There is a bit of a

:22:08. > :22:13.pitch invasion. We see the penalty find the far corner. We have got

:22:14. > :22:21.about 50 Wimbledon fans, who have spilled onto the pitch. The final

:22:22. > :22:24.whistle has gone. What really matters is that MK Dons have beaten

:22:25. > :22:37.Wimbledon here tonight. The players stuck to the fight. It

:22:38. > :22:42.is difficult, it is like a derby, and there will always be emotion and

:22:43. > :22:46.passion. The two sets of players conducted themselves really well,

:22:47. > :22:49.and that is the bit we have got to take from the game. We shot

:22:50. > :22:59.ourselves in the foot, conceding a set piece. To go and concede from a

:23:00. > :23:03.set piece is criminal. I asked for a bit more intensity in the second

:23:04. > :23:09.half, pressing a bit higher, having a go, and the boys gave me that. A

:23:10. > :23:16.couple of slip-ups have killed the game off, but the best team won.

:23:17. > :23:22.MK Dons did dominate, you knew what he was getting at, because the first

:23:23. > :23:26.goal summed it up. Wimbledon were not quite at it when it mattered.

:23:27. > :23:32.You would expect somebody to be in the hole. Kyle McFadzean gets there.

:23:33. > :23:36.When you allow the opponent to get the first touch from a corner, you

:23:37. > :23:41.will have problems. It is a lovely finish, but they follow the ball,

:23:42. > :23:46.rather than going towards the ball. They get punished for it. He would

:23:47. > :23:52.have wanted somebody on the six yard line, just in that space, to stop

:23:53. > :23:57.the ball coming through. Considering the history of these clubs, are you

:23:58. > :24:02.still surprised at the amount of feeling and emotion that still goes

:24:03. > :24:08.on, especially in the build-up to this fixture? There is still the

:24:09. > :24:14.novelty value of them playing each other, but it goes a lot deeper. The

:24:15. > :24:25.feeling is much deeper for Wimbledon fans. Retaining the name in the new

:24:26. > :24:32.identity, it is still something that great. If they do play each other in

:24:33. > :24:39.cup competitions, might it simmer down a bit? You would like to think

:24:40. > :24:44.so. We almost mentioned it on Saturday, Wimbledon's front players,

:24:45. > :24:48.Adebayo Akinfenwa and Matt Tubbs, when they gel, they can be a real

:24:49. > :24:54.threat. That is the case for both sides. MK Dons did not have an end

:24:55. > :24:58.product, they looked like they have got three or four players who could

:24:59. > :25:04.contribute, and that partnership, the big man and a little man, when

:25:05. > :25:10.you play together, you have to be given, and they are. Somebody who

:25:11. > :25:15.will take the physical side, and somebody who can finish. Some of the

:25:16. > :25:18.other stories from the first round, starting with the other match from

:25:19. > :25:26.tonight, Sheffield United against Mansfield Town.

:25:27. > :25:31.Beaten on the opening weekend, Sheffield United were eager to get

:25:32. > :25:37.up and running. The Mansfield goalkeeper tested early on, with the

:25:38. > :25:44.FA Cup semifinalists setting the pace. Their opponents were disrupted

:25:45. > :25:51.with the loss of a debutante, but in a rare Mansfield attack, his

:25:52. > :25:55.replacement went close. They were much better after the break, only to

:25:56. > :26:03.fall behind following their best spell. Andy Butler's debut goal.

:26:04. > :26:09.Mansfield mustered a stirring response. Alex Fisher has plied his

:26:10. > :26:14.trade in Belgium, Spain and Italy, but he loved his first goal back in

:26:15. > :26:19.England. For a while, it was hard to call a winner, but four minutes from

:26:20. > :26:29.time, Marc McNulty decided it on his debut. Sheffield United safely into

:26:30. > :26:33.the hat this time. For the second year in a row,

:26:34. > :26:42.backbone have suffered a first-round upset. Neal Bishop's 34th minute

:26:43. > :26:47.goal. The Blackburn manager called it the worst performance of his

:26:48. > :26:51.tenure. Their attempts at a recovery did not amount to much. The

:26:52. > :26:57.goalkeeper was also well positioned to stop this effort. Scunthorpe held

:26:58. > :27:06.on for a victory that should in still plenty of confidence.

:27:07. > :27:11.disappointment at Swindon, and you have seen the response, I am

:27:12. > :27:15.delighted for the travelling fans. I thought we deserved the victory, we

:27:16. > :27:18.played some good football, we moved it well, we created opportunities,

:27:19. > :27:23.and we were brilliant without the ball as well.

:27:24. > :27:33.Ipswich have often found themselves on the wrong end of a leak cup

:27:34. > :27:40.shock. But they should have had their nerves settled. Mick McCarthy

:27:41. > :27:44.utilised his squad, and there was nearly a headline grabbing winner

:27:45. > :27:48.from the debut tongue. But calling home gone, and late in extra time, a

:27:49. > :27:53.goal which they had not worked on in training from Izale McLeod ensured

:27:54. > :28:04.they became the ninth lower league club in 12 years to knock Ipswich

:28:05. > :28:10.out. I thought we had done enough to win it in the 90 minutes. But well

:28:11. > :28:15.done to Crawley. I congratulate my players. They never gave up. They

:28:16. > :28:18.showed passion and effort and enthusiasm. If we could pass the

:28:19. > :28:26.ball better, I would be happier tonight.

:28:27. > :28:31.2006 finalists Wigan made alterations in their first meeting

:28:32. > :28:41.with Burton. They took time to justify the sweeping changes. A

:28:42. > :28:50.first goal in six months the Marc-Antoine Fortune. Six minutes

:28:51. > :28:54.after coming on, Dominic Knowles scored in injury time. The Burton

:28:55. > :28:58.manager described the team performance as good as any in his

:28:59. > :29:04.two years at the club and was impressed by the players' start to

:29:05. > :29:08.the second half which resulted in a golfer Stuart Beavon. Despite having

:29:09. > :29:09.time to get back in the game, Wigan and fortune could not roster and

:29:10. > :29:25.equaliser. -- muster. The lower league teams will raise

:29:26. > :29:30.their standards. You are not going for 90 minutes flat out, then you

:29:31. > :29:39.can hurt. We got hurt today. We caused ourselves problems. That is

:29:40. > :29:46.as well the team has played in my time as manager. We were resolute

:29:47. > :29:57.and created chances. Wolverhampton Wanderers have three

:29:58. > :30:05.goals ruled offside. There was a shock in store for the crowd five

:30:06. > :30:08.minutes after this goal. But they bared their teeth in a quickfire

:30:09. > :30:15.fightback that garnered two goals in as many minutes. Nouha Dicko put

:30:16. > :30:21.them back in with a shout. Sam Ricketts levelled the scores. The

:30:22. > :30:26.star of the night was Lawson D'Ath, who found the perfect way to recover

:30:27. > :30:34.from being released by Reading in the summer. He repaid his new

:30:35. > :30:37.manager's faith. Wolverhampton had a chance to drag themselves back on

:30:38. > :30:45.terms in the second half. But the Cup shock was complete.

:30:46. > :30:52.We gave poor goals away and in the end Wolverhampton defended well. We

:30:53. > :31:00.had balls across the box. We did not get on the end of that. Blackpool

:31:01. > :31:04.had a bench of six that this as opposed to the four they managed on

:31:05. > :31:10.Saturday. That is where the good news ended. A let off as this

:31:11. > :31:18.mistake almost let in Scott Vernon. The Blackpool boss admitted the

:31:19. > :31:25.league side with a better team. -- were the better team. Ashley

:31:26. > :31:31.Vincent's cross was flicked on by James Collins. The goal-scorer was a

:31:32. > :31:42.former Blackpool player. Blackpool responded well. This shot back off

:32:34. > :32:36.weekend that this was the match-winning performance here,

:32:37. > :32:43.which was just as well, because they gave Leeds the jitters later on.

:32:44. > :32:49.James Gray pulled one back with six minutes remaining. Moments later,

:32:50. > :32:58.they were millimetres away from an equaliser. Perhaps anxiety set in.

:32:59. > :33:09.How else can you explain this? The challenge defied description, let

:33:10. > :33:18.alone anything else. The unpredictable is never far away at

:33:19. > :33:21.Elland Road. Opinion was divided about the

:33:22. > :33:26.match's pivotal moment at the Valley. The manager believed his

:33:27. > :33:30.skipper blocked this effort with his rib cage but the referee believed an

:33:31. > :33:37.arm was used and dished out the double punishment of penalty and red

:33:38. > :33:45.card. The Belgian took the responsibility and scored his first

:33:46. > :33:49.goal for Charlton. Lawrie Wilson is not a regular scorer, but provided a

:33:50. > :33:56.tidy finish here. He was at it again. The build-up was given to

:33:57. > :34:01.finish it deserved by Wilson. He equalled his tally for the whole of

:34:02. > :34:07.last season in four minutes. Chris Lewington was having a debut to

:34:08. > :34:10.forget in goal and his failure to gather this effort allowed Simon

:35:05. > :35:13.Jeffers' first goal for the club brought hope in injury time. But

:35:14. > :35:16.Reading born teenager Craig Tanner made the most of his senior debut to

:35:17. > :35:26.ensure his hometown club's progression. Despite hammering

:35:27. > :35:30.Huddersfield, Bournemouth manager changed his starting line-up of

:35:31. > :35:42.Exeter, who fell behind when Scot Bennett put through his net. Their

:35:43. > :35:51.safe passage was sealed when Dan Gosling let in the second.

:35:52. > :36:00.Nine changes did not derail Watford's campaign at Stevenage. One

:36:01. > :36:04.goal was sufficient. This maiden goal for the players settled the

:36:05. > :36:16.meeting. We knew it would be a tough game, we

:36:17. > :36:23.have had cup matches here before. It was nice to come out on the right

:36:24. > :36:31.side and into the next round. 100% start to the season for

:36:32. > :36:35.Watford. One of the biggest upsets in the first round, was the turning

:36:36. > :36:42.over of Wigan. Two good results for your old Cambridge team-mate. Not

:36:43. > :36:52.just a good result but the way they played. Almost by necessity. He had

:36:53. > :36:55.to freshen up. You need to. They hit the ground running, which is

:36:56. > :37:02.important. Stuart Beavon looks a good signing. The Wigan side, ten

:37:03. > :37:10.changes. They have done well in the Cup recently. Should we be

:37:11. > :37:17.surprised? Probably not. Shrewsbury Town at the great results, 1-0

:37:18. > :37:23.against Blackpool. We asked if it was an upset. I posted that on

:37:24. > :37:26.Twitter and some people say no. Shrewsbury Town 60 new faces and a

:37:27. > :37:33.new manager. Quite exciting, but not the Blackpool. They showed Blackpool

:37:34. > :37:39.how quickly things can turn around -- 16 new faces. The manager

:37:40. > :37:44.changing and things have settled down. People seem to know where they

:37:51. > :37:55.miles away from getting to the end of the road of what we expect of a

:37:56. > :38:00.championship side and somebody who can be competitive at that level.

:38:01. > :38:05.Even against Shrewsbury Town that they failed to fill their bench,

:38:06. > :38:10.they had one space. How much sympathy do you have? He is playing

:38:11. > :38:16.catch up massively. I do not know how much he is to blame, the

:38:17. > :38:20.chairman, the problems at the club are to blame. Everybody is

:38:21. > :38:24.responsible and has two play their part. They have a mountain to climb.

:38:25. > :38:30.They left everything late last year. They started the season well.

:38:31. > :38:36.It has not happened this year. Having missed out on a return to the

:38:37. > :38:39.Premier League in the play-offs, Derby County began the season as

:38:40. > :38:44.favourites for promotion this season. They were won against

:38:45. > :38:54.Rotherham and then were away to Carlisle.

:38:55. > :39:10.Another great save. It is just wide by Ward. Timed his run to

:39:11. > :39:26.perfection. It was a very smart stop from Mark Gillespie. Gillespie,

:39:27. > :39:37.again. Mystified as to how he did not make it a goal to Derby. Craig

:39:38. > :39:45.Forsyth looking for Martin. He was in against the bar. That Carlisle

:39:46. > :39:56.goal is leading a charmed life at the moment. David Symington is the

:39:57. > :40:05.player over this the Carlisle. And a big moment in the game. David

:40:23. > :40:33.And that is in. Jeff Hendrick breaks the deadlock. Taken by Jamie Ward

:40:34. > :40:38.and helped on by Whitbread. Jeff Hendrick found space and the back of

:40:39. > :40:49.the net. Finally, Mark Gillespie's brave resistance has been broken

:40:50. > :40:53.down. And that is number two. It is all over. Chris Martin, last

:40:54. > :40:59.season's top scorer for Derby settles the issue. That was a good

:41:00. > :41:02.delivery from the right, this time from Russell. And a brilliant finish

:41:03. > :41:11.from the Scottish international, Chris Martin. Ever so pleased with

:41:12. > :41:16.the performance. Disappointed with the result. It gives us food for

:41:33. > :41:46.against Bury. With seconds to go, Craig Davies was

:41:56. > :42:00.nothing from preventing Craig Davies from taking it into extra time.

:42:01. > :42:06.Bolton then took the game away. Three minutes into the extra

:42:07. > :42:13.half-hour, this header caught out Chris Sedgwick on the goal line. It

:42:14. > :42:22.might go down as a own goal. The perfect free kick send them into

:42:50. > :42:53.a lift after Mark Robins became the first managerial casualty of the

:42:54. > :43:00.season, they could not have made a worse start at Chesterfield. This

:43:01. > :43:04.put the League 1 hosts in front. The advantage was doubled when this

:43:05. > :43:09.wayward pass was punished in spectacular fashion just before the

:43:10. > :43:13.break. Banks had just replaced Humphreys and made an impact. It

:43:14. > :43:19.prompted the caretaker boss to change the formation at half-time.

:43:28. > :43:32.Chesterfield were not finished. Their lead was restored thanks to

:43:33. > :43:39.Roberts' determined drive into the box. Eoin Doyle with quick

:43:40. > :43:42.reactions. The Derbyshire club looks set for success but as they closed

:43:43. > :43:48.in on their place in round two, nerves showed. And with this tumble

:43:49. > :43:56.in the area, Huddersfield have another lifeline. Wells kept

:43:57. > :44:02.composure and let the charge row quick kick-off. They had six minutes

:44:03. > :44:08.to save themselves. It moved into stoppage time. Chesterfield let them

:44:09. > :44:14.win slipped through their fingers. Paul Cook was keen to point out that

:44:15. > :44:27.Tommy Lee is normally a pair of safe hands. Huddersfield got their act

:44:28. > :44:29.together. They made sure of progression when the substitute Joe

:44:30. > :44:31.Lolley added a fifth to progression when the substitute Joe

:44:32. > :44:33.Lolley added a leave Chesterfield fans wondering how the evening had

:44:34. > :44:51.gone so badly wrong. Birmingham City had not seen their

:44:52. > :44:57.side win at St Andrews over seven months. But once Donaldson scored

:44:58. > :45:00.his first goal for his new club, you sensed they would ease clear of the

:45:01. > :45:03.Cambridge side who had not played in the League Cup for a decade.

:45:04. > :45:12.Birmingham fans take nothing for granted. Ryan Donaldson levelled the

:45:13. > :45:21.tie. Birmingham were against the ropes. They were indebted to their

:45:22. > :45:30.keeper, who is spared their blushes after this happened just before the

:45:31. > :45:34.hour. In extra time, Paul Caddis put Birmingham in front for a second

:45:35. > :45:39.time. The home win that eluded them for so long was within touching

:45:40. > :45:46.distance and was confirmed by their new signing, Mark Duffy. Birmingham

:45:47. > :45:53.win, but this was far from impressive. I told the players I

:45:54. > :45:56.watched Cambridge at the weekend and said they were outstanding and this

:45:57. > :46:03.would be a tough game and I was correct. Nobody expected us to come

:46:04. > :46:08.to win here tonight. I know there can be shocks. We wanted to win. We

:46:09. > :46:13.were confident we could give them a scare. We have done that.

:46:14. > :46:22.Unfortunately, we could not see it through. Two games and two wins and

:46:23. > :46:25.scored five and conceded none. Middlesbrough have started the

:46:26. > :46:32.season with promise. It looks like they have strength in depth. This

:46:33. > :46:35.opened the pressed claims for a regular first-team spot by Luke

:46:36. > :46:45.Williams. They extended their lead in the second half through Grant

:46:46. > :46:51.Leadbetter -- Grant Leadbitter. And Kite look tasty, too. Can he do it

:46:52. > :46:56.on a wet Tuesday night at old and -- Oldham? It was a stroll for

:46:57. > :47:06.Middlesbrough. Opportunities to break the deadlock

:47:07. > :47:13.were few and far between, with one of the best falling to Rotherham's

:47:14. > :47:18.Paul Green. This just off, which will strike a chord with the

:47:19. > :47:26.chairman who pitched up at the wrong ground before the match. After a 90

:47:27. > :47:33.minute stalemate, the League 1 club were undone when this player lost

:47:34. > :47:36.his bearings. Without a hint of nerves, Derbyshire completed the

:47:37. > :47:47.punishment to carry the championship club through, much to Fleetwood's

:47:48. > :47:53.frustration. Did you get a good view of the penalty? It was not a

:47:54. > :47:57.penalty. I would be interested to see if it happened at the other end.

:47:58. > :48:01.I do not think it is a penalty, and the players do not. We are an honest

:48:02. > :48:09.bunch. We had penalties on Saturday and held our hands up. That was not.

:48:10. > :48:21.Stuart Pearce has fond memories of the League Cup, lifting the trophy

:48:22. > :48:25.twice as a player. The winger's second goal in consecutive games for

:48:26. > :48:29.his new club. He could have made life more comfortable for the

:48:30. > :48:34.travelling fans had he not been a fraction too high the next time he

:48:35. > :48:40.ghosted into the penalty area. Forrest reduced to ten men in the

:48:41. > :48:50.second half. And a second yellow card for a clumsy challenge.

:48:51. > :48:55.Tranmere, beaten League Cup finalists in 2000, had a chance to

:48:56. > :49:02.get back into the game. They went mighty close to an equaliser when

:49:03. > :49:05.this cross was thumped against the upright. But Forest go through. Two

:49:06. > :49:16.wins out of two the Stuart Pearce. Wickham arrived at the Den

:49:17. > :49:24.determined to faze Millwall with their away kit. Matthew Briggs

:49:25. > :49:29.scored on his Millwall debut before deciding his own shirt was not to

:49:30. > :49:34.his liking. A yellow card followed and ear-bashing from the manager.

:49:35. > :49:38.The Wycombe boss was once a Ian Holloway player and ran his old

:49:39. > :49:49.governor close. The League 2 side fought them all the way. David Ford

:49:50. > :49:52.hat to be alert. In the second half, the shirtless celebration came out

:49:53. > :49:57.to haul the player who collected a second yellow stop in fairness, the

:49:58. > :50:02.challenge might have earned a straight red card. Either way, it

:50:03. > :50:08.would have provoked a roll of the eyes from Ian Holloway, who

:50:09. > :50:16.otherwise enjoyed the contest. I want to give credit to Wickham, who

:50:17. > :50:27.played well. We knew we were in a game. I thought we edged it. It was

:50:28. > :50:34.thoroughly enjoyable. Very pleased. That is ten we have not lost. It

:50:35. > :50:39.feels nice. We have earned respect from a championship side who beat

:50:40. > :50:44.Leeds at the weekend convincingly. It shows how far we have come. Last

:50:45. > :50:54.season was a poor season for Wycombe Wanderers. They are good steps, slow

:50:55. > :51:01.steps but good steps for me. Brighton found Cheltenham tough to

:51:02. > :51:05.crack until they drop their guard. Lewis Dunk with his first senior

:51:06. > :51:12.goal. Equally delighted was the man who made the victory say. Craig

:51:13. > :51:16.Mackail-Smith, his first goal in a year and a half. Most of which was

:51:17. > :51:23.spent with a ruptured Achilles tendon.

:51:24. > :51:28.Notts County were less than two minutes away from wrapping a

:51:29. > :51:34.terrific win at Preston on Saturday, but this was a different story. This

:51:35. > :51:38.thunderous finish the Sheffield Wednesday with just over 90 seconds

:51:39. > :51:51.played at Hillsborough. Jacques Maghoma. They secured an excellent

:51:52. > :51:54.win at Brighton on Saturday and now the league was doubled. We will know

:51:55. > :52:01.more about Sheffield Wednesday when they play Derby on Saturday, but

:52:02. > :52:09.this victory was effortless. Atdhe Nuhiu wrapped it up midway through

:52:10. > :52:16.the second half. The former U21 striker put himself among the

:52:17. > :52:23.They are a good team, Sheffield Wednesday and I think they will have

:52:24. > :52:26.a decent season. They have good manager and stability. For us, the

:52:27. > :52:30.way we conceded the goals, especially early in the game, it is

:52:31. > :52:38.hard to come back against a quality team. It has been an eventful four

:52:39. > :52:43.days of the season of the Huddersfield Town, which is an

:52:44. > :52:47.understatement. Mark Roberts leaving after 18 hours. Unlike the 4-0

:52:48. > :52:51.surrender at the weekend, what a comeback and what a sign of fight to

:52:52. > :53:09.show any new manager who will take over next. The right time at the

:53:10. > :53:12.right place, Wells. With the competition coming so quickly after

:53:13. > :53:17.the first league game, for some teams they all the games and

:53:18. > :53:20.depending on how you get on in your first game, you do not want to lose

:53:21. > :53:27.the first game and go out at the League Cup in the first four days,

:53:28. > :53:33.so that was a big game. Bolton. When you look at the timings of the

:53:34. > :53:37.goals, it is curious. Craig Davies scoring a penalty and then they

:53:38. > :53:48.scored again in the 93rd and 95th. It was a well taken penalty. When

:53:49. > :53:51.you are beaten badly, you want another game quickly where you can

:53:52. > :53:57.turn that around. You do not want to lose the next game. Both sides we

:53:58. > :54:02.are talking about have made sure they have not lost the second game,

:54:03. > :54:07.which gives them breathing space. Time to round up the rest of the

:54:08. > :54:11.action. Luton were looking to follow up their first win back in the

:54:12. > :54:20.Football League on Saturday with a cup upset to Swindon Town. The

:54:21. > :54:24.Capital One cup made a lively return. Nathan Thompson failed to

:54:25. > :54:29.convince the assistant referee he used to shoulder to control the

:54:30. > :54:38.ball. And so Luton get a first goal of the competition in six years.

:54:39. > :54:43.Swindon had a penalty of their own. Bamboozled by the trickery. No

:54:44. > :54:51.complaints about the goal this time. Number four arrived nine

:54:52. > :54:57.minutes from time with a sense of style. Thanks to the way it was made

:54:58. > :55:04.and the way it was finished by Smith. Luton ended the match a goal

:55:05. > :55:09.down and a man down. The attempt to win another penalty was viewed as

:55:10. > :55:12.simulation by the referee. His second yellow card help to ensure

:55:13. > :55:20.their return to the League Cup would be brief.

:55:21. > :55:35.The changing face of Ashton Gate. And changing for it is the Bristol

:55:36. > :55:40.City. The Robins going in front inside two minutes. Oxford seeking a

:55:41. > :55:47.first win under Michael Appleton. Add an equaliser from teenage

:55:48. > :55:51.striker Carlton Morris. Leaked to beat League 1. The 1986 League Cup

:55:52. > :55:54.winners booking their passage to bang to beat League 1. The 1986

:55:57. > :56:02.Restore city still a work in progress, like the stadium.

:56:03. > :56:10.This acted as a precursor to Saturday's fixture. Crewe Alexandra

:56:11. > :56:15.boasting four wins over Barnsley threatened to continue the trend

:56:16. > :56:34.with this goal. Barnsley had opportunities to level. The best

:56:35. > :56:35.fell to Sam when all. -- Winnell. The captain inflicted on Barnsley a

:56:36. > :56:44.second home defeat of the season. The Yeovil manager criticised some

:56:45. > :56:49.of his players the lacking desire and passion and neither quality was

:56:50. > :56:53.in plentiful supply when Dickinson gave Gillingham the lead midway

:56:54. > :57:04.through the first half. Yeovil Town who were beaten by Doncaster at the

:57:05. > :57:08.weekend, stepped it up. Glenn Morris with this low save. But he was left

:57:09. > :57:17.helpless 11 minutes into the second half. A superb equaliser. In the

:57:18. > :57:25.space of three minutes, the game drifted away from the Glovers. The

:57:26. > :57:33.Gillingham lead was restored. Ill discipline cost the home side.

:57:34. > :57:43.Lunging in on Luke Norris and the referee's card ended any chance of a

:57:44. > :57:49.comeback for Yeovil. You are always disappointed when you go out of any

:57:50. > :57:53.cup. It is a source of revenue. It was not going to happen today. We

:57:54. > :58:00.made poor mistakes that led to goals. It seems to be a trait at the

:58:01. > :58:06.moment. And a sending off. I have not seen it yet. I do not know

:58:07. > :58:09.whether it was harsh, some people thought it was. That makes it more

:58:10. > :58:16.difficult when you are down to ten men. There was no hint of late-night

:58:17. > :58:25.drama in Devon when Orient took early control. David Mooney picked

:58:26. > :58:37.this player's pocket and then they took advantage. They had suffered a

:58:38. > :58:40.home defeat to Chesterfield on Saturday but got that out of their

:58:41. > :58:49.system when this brilliant ball was wandered in. -- funded in. The match

:58:50. > :58:52.became a contest on the stroke of half-time. Nothing pretty about the

:58:53. > :59:03.build-up. Reid was not concerned about that. He levelled the match

:59:04. > :59:11.single-handedly, helped out by an old-fashioned challenge, before

:59:12. > :59:16.keeping his composure. No more goals in 90 minutes, so extra time, and

:59:17. > :59:27.Leyton Orient went in front again, a Dean Cox cross for Romain Vincelot.

:59:28. > :59:33.But Plymouth were not finished, Carl McHugh's League Cup goal came in the

:59:34. > :59:40.semifinals for Bradford, and this deflection was not as high profile,

:59:41. > :59:49.but produced parity again. So, two penalties. It took seven rounds to

:59:50. > :59:53.find a winner. Mathieu Baudry held his nerve, but Carl McHugh could not

:00:23. > :00:33.Hartlepool hit back two minutes later, Jonathan Franks took aim, a

:00:34. > :00:39.brilliant equaliser. The first half belonged to Ben Williamson. Twisting

:00:44. > :00:50.nine took charge. He put Port Vale back in front. That was two goals in

:00:51. > :00:56.six minutes, and it was a hat-trick in ten minutes. One left foot, one

:00:57. > :01:08.white, and this header, the perfect trouble, Port Vale's quickest since

:01:09. > :01:15.1934. Their progress stalled when the deficit was adduced by Neal

:01:16. > :01:22.Austen. But their response. Long in coming, Marshall be provided, and

:01:23. > :01:27.Michael Brown, Hartlepool born, with his first goal for his nightclub.

:01:28. > :01:28.The one glaring omission from the goal-scorers was Tom Pope, and he

:01:29. > :01:41.put that right. He ensured a four goal margin, as

:01:42. > :01:47.the home team grabbed a first victory of the season. Their biggest

:01:48. > :01:56.ever League Cup victory. Hodge the ball smashed in the potteries.

:01:57. > :02:02.When they last met in the League Cup, the roles of favourite and

:02:03. > :02:07.underdog were reversed. In this instance, Portsmouth went into the

:02:08. > :02:11.match looking to cause the shock, and took 12 minutes to show their

:02:12. > :02:20.intent, Miles Storey's goal for them. Only three of Peterborough's

:02:21. > :02:25.16 shots found the target. A stubborn Portsmouth defence ensured

:02:26. > :02:29.the manager stretched his unbeaten record to nine matches.

:02:30. > :02:36.We had to defend for some periods, but we always looked threatening on

:02:37. > :02:41.the counterattack, a great finish from Miles Storey. We had a couple

:02:42. > :02:43.of chances, we looked dangerous on the break. An entertaining game for

:02:44. > :02:53.the fans. The departure of last season's

:02:54. > :02:59.hotshot would have been a blow to Rochdale. They did not look like

:03:00. > :03:03.breaking through the Preston rearguard. Goals either side of

:03:04. > :03:12.half-time East Preston into the second round. Andrew Little got a

:03:13. > :03:18.little fortunate inside the six yard box. And they effectively killed the

:03:19. > :03:23.tie three minutes after the interval, Rochdale not clearing

:03:24. > :03:25.their lines, and what looked a tricky assignment beforehand was

:03:26. > :03:34.wrapped up comfortably by midfielder Neil Kilkenny.

:03:35. > :03:42.Southend were hoping to avoid a fourth successive first-round exit,

:03:43. > :03:49.but they failed to track the near post run of Malvind Benning. Walsall

:03:50. > :03:57.withstood plenty of home pressure and could do nothing about this,

:03:58. > :04:04.from Ryan Leonard. The tie was settled in the 87th minute, the

:04:05. > :04:07.Walsall manager sees his team as they work in progress, and this

:04:08. > :04:15.first goal from Kieron Morris suggests things are coming together

:04:16. > :04:21.nicely. Morecambe began the season with an

:04:22. > :04:30.away victory on Saturday. They needed to be in that form again

:04:31. > :04:34.against the finalists from 2013. Bradford took the lead with a goal

:04:35. > :04:40.but left Morecambe smarting, Aaron McLean the scorer from an excellent

:04:41. > :04:49.pass. The appeals for handball ignored by the referee. The closest

:04:50. > :04:56.Morecambe came to equalising was when this run and shot drew a save

:04:57. > :05:06.from the goalkeeper. Bradford safely into the second round.

:05:07. > :05:13.York City were on a mission to avoid a ninth consecutive first-round

:05:14. > :05:23.exit. They had their fair share of chances. One of several dog players

:05:24. > :05:27.to test the goalkeeper. But for all York City's possession and chances,

:05:28. > :05:32.they were undone in the first minute of added time. Harry Forrester found

:05:33. > :05:34.a way through, meaning South Yorkshire will be represented in

:05:35. > :05:43.round two. Not a bad goal to decided. Well done

:05:44. > :05:49.to Oxford, Crewe Alexandra, and Ben Williamson, for the perfect

:05:50. > :05:53.hat-trick. We saw Leyton Orient go to extra time against Plymouth. The

:05:54. > :06:02.manager said he wanted to do away with extra time in this competition.

:06:03. > :06:08.Yes, 50% of me understand where he is coming from, especially when you

:06:09. > :06:14.speak personally. And the high risk of injuries. It is a good point, but

:06:15. > :06:18.we have done away with the replays, how far do you cut back? The draw

:06:19. > :06:26.for the second round was made earlier today. We have got three

:06:27. > :06:32.pages of the graphic to get through. What has taken your eye? Stoke City

:06:33. > :06:36.against Portsmouth, that would have been a Premier League match not want

:06:37. > :06:42.the go. Millwall against Southampton, I have played in a cup

:06:43. > :06:47.tie with those sides, it will be a tasty atmosphere. A West London

:06:48. > :06:53.derby, five miles between Brentford and Fulham. That will be a good one,

:06:54. > :07:00.it is nice to keep it local, a good away following. Michael Appleton is

:07:01. > :07:04.back at his former club. Yes, back to West Brom, he will be looking

:07:05. > :07:19.forward to that. Lots to take in here. One of my other old clubs,

:07:20. > :07:23.Bennigan, -- Birmingham. Newcastle and Gillingham will be a fair few

:07:24. > :07:30.miles! They should be used to that. And Bradford against Leeds, that

:07:31. > :07:34.will be really good. And MK Dons against Manchester United, that is

:07:35. > :07:40.the plum draw. Louis Van Holt going to Milton Keynes. It is a long time

:07:41. > :07:46.since we have seen Manchester United at this stage. 19 years, they lost

:07:47. > :07:52.to York City. Who knows what will happen. We'll have highlight here.

:07:53. > :07:57.We are back on Saturday for the best from the football league, so join us

:07:58. > :08:05.after the first Match Of The Day of the season. Steve, as always, good

:08:06. > :08:11.to see you. What a first round of the League Cup, 110 goals in 35

:08:12. > :08:14.games. Hopefully, a sign of things to come. Hope to see you at the

:08:15. > :08:19.weekend. Good night.
