:00:42. > :00:51.Welcome to Manchester, well, welcome to Salford. This Saturday is Derby

:00:52. > :00:54.day and we have been looking forward to this. Tonight 's programme is

:00:55. > :00:58.dedicated to one of the most anticipated games in Premier League

:00:59. > :01:01.history. Tonight we have Ibrahimovic, Shearer, Iniesta and

:01:02. > :01:06.Johnson giving their thoughts on Manchester United versus enter the

:01:07. > :01:11.city. United finally had a local rival to fear. The blues were the

:01:12. > :01:20.upstarts, Carlos Tevez their poster boy. But the Reds had Wayne Rooney

:01:21. > :01:27.and Sir Alex Ferguson. In between, City counted, thanks to Mancini and

:01:28. > :01:30.Aguero. Their first league title was followed by a second under pedigree

:01:31. > :01:38.knee. Now they were two joined in Manchester. -- under Pellegrini. The

:01:39. > :02:08.Manchester derby is hard to beat. It's the captain 's goal! There is a

:02:09. > :02:12.new name on the trophy. That name is meant to the city. -- Manchester

:02:13. > :02:17.City. For the 20th time in the club's

:02:18. > :02:37.history. Champions. The title was only way for a year.

:02:38. > :02:48.That ruling has risen again. What a goal by Rashford!

:02:49. > :02:55.That was then, now a new episode is about to be written. It's a story

:02:56. > :02:58.that will be defined by the two huge personalities in charge, Jose

:02:59. > :03:02.Mourinho and Pep Guardiola, two managers with very different styles

:03:03. > :03:07.but opposites attract and these two can't stay away from each other.

:03:08. > :03:12.It's a burning feud that ignited at Barcelona, simmered in Milan and

:03:13. > :03:32.raged in Madrid. It may be about to boil over in Manchester.

:03:33. > :03:39.Rivalry is central to the meaning of football, up with Pep Guardiola and

:03:40. > :03:43.Jose Mourinho, to have a new breed of super manager, here in the same

:03:44. > :03:53.city, it's been taken to a new and intriguing level. Jose Mourinho is

:03:54. > :03:57.said to be... Pep Guardiola at Manchester City... I think it's one

:03:58. > :04:02.of the most significant moment in history of the Premier League and

:04:03. > :04:05.English football. Managers like to think of themselves as the

:04:06. > :04:12.personification of the clubs they manage. It's perhaps this reason

:04:13. > :04:19.that their rivalries can become so acutely personal. I wanted to do

:04:20. > :04:23.something you hadn't done. I wanted to win the league but better.

:04:24. > :04:32.There's no way you can win it better. I would love it if we win.

:04:33. > :04:39.I'm embarrassed for him, honestly. I'm talking about facts. The history

:04:40. > :04:41.of football is contracted by great reductions. These were not

:04:42. > :04:48.fabricated animosities, they were primal. Now we have perhaps the most

:04:49. > :04:59.explosive rivalry of all, two men who were once upon a time friends.

:05:00. > :05:05.It all starts with Bobby Robson, the day that he turns up as a young

:05:06. > :05:09.translator working for him at the airport, that is Jose Mourinho.

:05:10. > :05:15.Quickly Robson recognise the head extraordinary colour ties well

:05:16. > :05:19.beyond filling rustic skills. Young Pep was a voracious learner, he was

:05:20. > :05:25.passionately in love with FC Barcelona. He could see under

:05:26. > :05:29.Robson, pictures of the two of them dissecting a training session,

:05:30. > :05:36.talking about an upcoming game, to students. At that stage, pretty

:05:37. > :05:42.close. But what happened busy was that when Frank Rijkaard was

:05:43. > :05:50.evidently going to be relieved at the final season, 2007-8, Treasury

:05:51. > :05:53.Mendez, the agent for Jose Mourinho, hour after hour, phoned them to say,

:05:54. > :06:00.when you change, it has to be Mourinho. Josie will change, he will

:06:01. > :06:05.play 4-3- three, this lackadaisical culture will be dispersed when you

:06:06. > :06:11.give him the job. They gave it to Guardiola. In my opinion, the

:06:12. > :06:18.bitterness of having something exceptional taken away from him,

:06:19. > :06:23.that he didn't get to take charge of that group, that cost Mourinho not

:06:24. > :06:31.just a great deal, they it cost him too much.

:06:32. > :06:36.I think in a way the rivalry between Guardiola and Mourinho comes as a

:06:37. > :06:50.kind of perfect storm in Spain. Mourinho arrives as the hero for

:06:51. > :06:54.Real Madrid, he looks at Barcelona in the semifinal and prevents them

:06:55. > :06:57.from winning the Champions League at the Bernard Bale, the idea is, you

:06:58. > :07:05.have stopped them, now come here and beat them here, for us. There is a

:07:06. > :07:09.sense, but like with Clough and done really, that these two men to find

:07:10. > :07:13.themselves against each other. It has to be said that there is a stark

:07:14. > :07:18.contrast philosophically and personally between Mourinho and

:07:19. > :07:21.Guardiola. It seems more than a coincidence that they have arrived

:07:22. > :07:29.in the same city at the same time to renew their confrontation. The thing

:07:30. > :07:35.was Mourinho easy he is a and great at that. In terms of the dark side,

:07:36. > :07:39.we have no problem with that because we've always had that. Some of the

:07:40. > :07:45.pundits and the media, they go on about, is he going to desecrate the

:07:46. > :07:53.traditions of United. We have 34 years, he was up to all sorts! He

:07:54. > :07:56.was devious and everything. He was the greatest manager of all time to

:07:57. > :08:03.stop so we haven't got a problem with a bit of darkness. Mourinho is

:08:04. > :08:08.the bad guy and Pep is the good guy. He has kept a good councils and the

:08:09. > :08:15.has got it, he hasn't been bragging and shouting his mouth off, that is

:08:16. > :08:20.Mourinho's style, we will leave that to them and get on with the job.

:08:21. > :08:23.Mourinho was furious that Pep Guardiola were seen as the good

:08:24. > :08:27.guide he was the bad guy, he was furious people to he was

:08:28. > :08:33.misbehaving, he would make the point that others do it, but he is more

:08:34. > :08:35.honest. That was serving his agenda. Guardiola reacted front against this

:08:36. > :08:39.idea that he was perfect but reacted against those people who use his

:08:40. > :09:26.supposed perfection against him and he says, maybe I do this perfume.

:09:27. > :09:39.Two ways to describe Pep's football. First, its luxury cupboard lifts the

:09:40. > :09:43.spirit, it has a geometric plan, it is a moving, living organism that

:09:44. > :09:49.has core DNA that can't be abandoned. But you can reproduce it

:09:50. > :09:54.in different footballing cultures and for my money, that makes it the

:09:55. > :09:58.most exciting, the most brilliantly executed football there has ever

:09:59. > :10:06.been. Quite the owner is a special coach. His eye for detail, it's

:10:07. > :10:09.immense. -- Guardiola is a special coach. They are both similar in

:10:10. > :10:16.terms of how they want to play and perform. I would say the one

:10:17. > :10:20.difference is that Guardiola will not leave his style of play to get a

:10:21. > :10:26.result or to change something, Mourinho would. He is slightly more

:10:27. > :10:32.result minded in his way of playing, I think Guardiola is set in his way

:10:33. > :10:38.of how the team has to play and that's how we play. I think Mourinho

:10:39. > :10:43.is more of a pragmatist, he's a lot more flexible than people make out.

:10:44. > :10:48.There is a lot of talk of him playing for 1-0, but he didn't do

:10:49. > :10:54.that at Real Madrid, they broke for scoring records. He is able to

:10:55. > :10:58.adapt. I am one of many that reflect on their time with Mourinho, they

:10:59. > :11:04.speak very highly of him. He made such an impact at Chelsea when he

:11:05. > :11:07.first arrived, he created such a winning spirit, winning atmosphere,

:11:08. > :11:12.he should be regarded as one of the best, whether he is the all-time

:11:13. > :11:22.best, it's difficult to say. But he's definitely a special one.

:11:23. > :11:28.Extraordinary long-term success of United undersell Alex Ferguson was

:11:29. > :11:32.at least in part about culture. He wanted United be more than just a

:11:33. > :11:37.paycheque club, talked about the history, the tragedy at Munich, the

:11:38. > :11:40.Busby Babes, rebuilding the club from the ashes of the runway. For

:11:41. > :11:48.Ferguson, there was something that it meant to be a United player. Look

:11:49. > :11:52.at teams like the all Blacks and you will see that culture truly matters

:11:53. > :11:58.when it comes to domestic successful stop its not just about money or

:11:59. > :12:04.tactics or even strategy, the buddy motivation that can only sustained

:12:05. > :12:09.when it taps into something deeper. And this represents the defining

:12:10. > :12:14.telling the court Mourinho. We have seen the wheels come off at previous

:12:15. > :12:19.clubs, the astonishing collapse at Chelsea, the new mutiny at Real

:12:20. > :12:28.Madrid. Nothing to say. Nothing to say? The clash with Costa? Nothing

:12:29. > :12:35.to say. What other things that make you smile? Winning a match. They

:12:36. > :12:39.call it third season syndrome post of motivation for Mourinho seems to

:12:40. > :12:43.insist in the insinuation that everyone is against us. In the

:12:44. > :12:49.short-term, this works. Nobody wants to be in a siege. But it's like a

:12:50. > :12:56.sugar rush, just not sustainable. Nothing about the game at all, no

:12:57. > :12:59.individual performance? No. This feels different to his other jobs

:13:00. > :13:03.because it feels like on the face of it, it should be long-term, almost

:13:04. > :13:07.like he has reached the top. It sounds ridiculous when he has been

:13:08. > :13:12.at Real Madrid, but somehow he has been working towards this. Usually

:13:13. > :13:16.comes in the club and he is all charm, making jokes, the special

:13:17. > :13:21.one, all that, and then he gets serious and moody and noxious. But

:13:22. > :13:26.there has been none of that. He has not been Charlie, he has been very

:13:27. > :13:29.workmanlike. I think the United fans appreciate that, hopefully he won't

:13:30. > :13:37.pop and fizzle out, he is therefore the long run. The hiring of

:13:38. > :13:40.Guardiola could not have been more different. He was quoted

:13:41. > :13:47.relentlessly until he finally succumbed to the allure of the

:13:48. > :13:51.Etihad. But let's be brutally honest here. When Guardiola took the helm

:13:52. > :13:57.at Barcelona, he inherited some of the finest players of all time. When

:13:58. > :14:02.he joined Bayern Munich, they were already European champions.

:14:03. > :14:05.Transforming Manchester City into a European powerhouse is a different

:14:06. > :14:14.scale of challenge altogether. Even he knows he might fail. The primary

:14:15. > :14:17.thing that makes him a top coach, irrespective of the fact people like

:14:18. > :14:23.me often use words like genius to describe him, he goes into every new

:14:24. > :14:28.week, each new club as well, the basic idea, the basic fear gnawing

:14:29. > :14:57.away at him, maybe isn't really all that good.

:14:58. > :15:06.To my mind, we do tend to exaggerate the significance of the manager. Is

:15:07. > :15:11.he important? Absolutely. Should we interpret every kick, tackle and go

:15:12. > :15:15.through the Prism of his influence? Absolutely not. In some ways, it is

:15:16. > :15:19.slightly insulting to the players to think of them as merely a conduit

:15:20. > :15:27.for the will of the man on the touchline.

:15:28. > :15:32.When Guardiola arrived to Barcelona, it took a good few weeks into the

:15:33. > :15:37.season for the ball to get rolling. As it did when Mourinho arrived at

:15:38. > :15:42.Chelsea. Once we did that, we took off. And we had one of the most

:15:43. > :15:49.successful seasons in football history. Five -- managers want to

:15:50. > :15:53.win and we talk about Pep is a purist and poor dosh for and

:15:54. > :15:58.idealist but he wants to win as well and Mourinho wants to win. We say

:15:59. > :16:02.Mourinho wins and he is a winner, defying winner. This idea what is a

:16:03. > :16:07.winner and one is a philosopher, it turns out philosophy wins quite a

:16:08. > :16:13.lot as well. When the classical rivalry reached its most acidic, I

:16:14. > :16:17.just would argue that Guardiola came out of it with more trophies, more

:16:18. > :16:25.credit, less red cards, less polemic things said, and I think that means

:16:26. > :16:32.that at that time, he won the battle and for Manchester, let's see.

:16:33. > :16:36.So far, it it is seven wins the Pep and three the Jose but England is

:16:37. > :16:40.the patch of Jose and he has already won the Premier league title three

:16:41. > :16:44.times. Both clubs were well off the pace last season and the managers

:16:45. > :16:49.have been put in for one reason, to improve results on the pitch. A

:16:50. > :16:52.title challenge is the minimum expectation. Alan Shearer looks at

:16:53. > :16:57.how they have begun to reshape their new teams.

:16:58. > :17:03.Nine point out of nine, a perfect start the season both manager --

:17:04. > :17:09.managers. United under Jose Mourinho looking more powerful set of --.

:17:10. > :17:13.Zlatan Ibrahimovic offense, they are more dangerous in the box. They have

:17:14. > :17:18.made 53 crosses compared to 29 from the last three games last season.

:17:19. > :17:21.The first competitive game of the season, the community Shield against

:17:22. > :17:26.Leicester and people were wondering how United would play. This is how,

:17:27. > :17:34.they get balls out wide and they put them into dangerous areas because of

:17:35. > :17:38.the physical presence of the line and Paul Pogba. The movement of

:17:39. > :17:44.Zlatan Ibrahimovic is not great but he gets the line of the ball early

:17:45. > :17:50.before Morgan, he is early and has power and accuracy, the head is

:17:51. > :17:53.superb. Against Southampton, very much like against Leicester. Once

:17:54. > :17:58.the ball goes to the right-hand side as it is for Wayne Rooney here,

:17:59. > :18:02.Ibrahimovic and Paul Pogba knows that the ball comes into the

:18:03. > :18:07.dangerous area. Rooney is not picking anybody out, he is putting

:18:08. > :18:14.it into the dangerous area and Saint Zlatan Ibrahimovic, get your head on

:18:15. > :18:17.this. He timed to perfection. Gets above his marker, Fonte well, he is

:18:18. > :18:21.early so he cannot jump, and the direction of the header is superb

:18:22. > :18:27.and that is a constant theme of United this season, getting the ball

:18:28. > :18:30.into the box. Guardiola's Manchester City also use with the greater

:18:31. > :18:35.effect and we saw something new to the Premier league this season, both

:18:36. > :18:37.for black players were asked to push into the centre of midfield to

:18:38. > :18:42.outnumber their opponents and both wingers stayed out on the touchline,

:18:43. > :18:50.practically getting a choke on their boots. Against West Ham, Nolito and

:18:51. > :18:56.de Bruyne, Sterling caused mayhem. De Bruyne on the right-hand side,

:18:57. > :19:00.online practically, superb play from David Silva, they have options

:19:01. > :19:05.either side, and when you play four at the back or five like West Ham,

:19:06. > :19:09.it is designed so you outnumber your midfield and you stretch that

:19:10. > :19:13.defence and Manchester City did a well in this game. So difficult, and

:19:14. > :19:16.Sterling who I think has benefited more than most, if given the freedom

:19:17. > :19:22.when the ball was on the left-hand side and he can get into the box and

:19:23. > :19:31.stick it away. The first clip, Nolito and de Bruyne. They go down

:19:32. > :19:36.the right-hand side with that with. Stretching West Ham. They were

:19:37. > :19:40.unlucky with the first movement with Silva who hits the post. Look at

:19:41. > :19:45.Sterling, coming in of the touchline, he is given the freedom

:19:46. > :19:49.to roam and he gets his goal. Such a clever goal and a lovely ball from

:19:50. > :19:53.Silva and I do not think Sterling would have taken this on last year.

:19:54. > :19:58.He is prepared to do it now and it is such a clever goal. But both

:19:59. > :20:01.teams playing different systems, this is a tactical head-to-head

:20:02. > :20:07.between two of the best managers in the business that will be a

:20:08. > :20:12.ferocious match. The winners could be from the team uses the wide

:20:13. > :20:16.players to the effect. Manchester City or without talisman

:20:17. > :20:20.Sergio Aguero who serves his first of the three match suspension after

:20:21. > :20:25.being guilty of violent conduct for this elbow on Winston Reid. There

:20:26. > :20:30.are many players capable of stealing the limelight and there are less

:20:31. > :20:35.bigger personalities than Zlatan Ibrahimovic, the man who does not do

:20:36. > :20:41.auditions. Can you describe who is Zlatan

:20:42. > :20:44.Ibrahimovic because a lot of people do not understand? I never heard

:20:45. > :20:48.this question before, I think you are the only one who does not

:20:49. > :20:54.understand, you should ask people who know that. What you think they

:20:55. > :20:59.will say? An icon, a hate figure. Whatever

:21:00. > :21:04.your opinion, his cult status continues to grow. But beneath his

:21:05. > :21:11.almost mystical standing is an exceptional player. Yet the question

:21:12. > :21:15.remains, who is Zlatan? Very arrogant, that is what I hear all

:21:16. > :21:19.the time, he is very cocky, he has a bad character. You should never

:21:20. > :21:29.judge a person if you don't know him because it is very dangerous. From

:21:30. > :21:36.the start, Ibrahimovic was a divisive figure. He is a strong

:21:37. > :21:40.character. When it is not going well or what he likes, then he can make

:21:41. > :21:42.it difficult for the rest of the people. He can make it difficult for

:21:43. > :21:57.himself. Ibrahimovic! Zlatan! A tough upbringing as the Sun of an

:21:58. > :22:02.immigrant family in Malmo Sweden, Ibrahimovic developed a steely edge

:22:03. > :22:05.to succeed and wherever he plays, the trophies followed. Although his

:22:06. > :22:11.high standards were often hard to match. I believe in hard work. You

:22:12. > :22:15.work hard, you get paid back. And I believe in the old school where you

:22:16. > :22:19.train like you play, you do not train good, you do not play good.

:22:20. > :22:26.There was an episode with a young player and he was not so good. But

:22:27. > :22:31.he trained with us and I said to him at the end, go to your arrivals on

:22:32. > :22:35.the calendar and train with me because this is the last time that

:22:36. > :22:41.you train. And I told him, you don't have to speak like this. You are an

:22:42. > :22:45.example for these guys. Sometimes, he can seem arrogant, but he is

:22:46. > :22:50.really focused on his job, he really wants the best for his team. Stories

:22:51. > :22:55.of his complex persona have made him an easy target for critics,

:22:56. > :22:59.especially in England. But nine titles in the last ten seasons means

:23:00. > :23:06.his self-assurance more than matches his self aggrandisement. He is one

:23:07. > :23:15.of the best players I believe in the last 20 years. I put him there with

:23:16. > :23:21.Messi, Ronaldo. His self belief is unbelievable and this is his

:23:22. > :23:26.strength. I have won a lot of trophies and every country I came,

:23:27. > :23:29.I40 macro. If I could win here, it would be fantastic. But what would

:23:30. > :23:45.they talk about then? But time has changed. At Old

:23:46. > :23:49.Trafford, Ibrahimovic is reunited with Jose Mourinho, a manager who

:23:50. > :23:53.understands what makes him tick. He is a winner. I see myself as a

:23:54. > :23:59.winner also, I like to win, they will do everything to win. And he is

:24:00. > :24:02.direct with everyone, he is not a coach who goes behind you, he will

:24:03. > :24:07.tell you if you are not good enough, you are not good enough. In contrast

:24:08. > :24:11.is the man in the away dugout on Saturday. During a strange period at

:24:12. > :24:16.Barcelona, Ibrahimovic and Pep Guardiola did not see eye. I had

:24:17. > :24:23.this thing that he didn't want to talk to me and I was like, I am

:24:24. > :24:28.doing good, I am training good, I am working hard. And at the end, no

:24:29. > :24:32.words, no words, nothing. If somebody has a problem with me, they

:24:33. > :24:38.should come to me and resolve it, whatever the problem is, like a man.

:24:39. > :24:45.I think a lot of things has happened from that time until now. So how he

:24:46. > :24:48.works today, I don't know. I could not care less because he is not my

:24:49. > :24:53.coach. At 34, at United's future may not

:24:54. > :24:58.lie with Ibrahimovic but there were memories of its past when he joined.

:24:59. > :25:02.And if Jose Mourinho can again get the best out of him, there will be

:25:03. > :25:08.no need to ask, who is Zlatan, any more!

:25:09. > :25:11.You can see more of that interview on football focus on Saturday. After

:25:12. > :25:15.the hype surrounding this match, we thought we would find out what it
