:00:50. > :01:02.When you think of this iconic city and its glittering sporting heritage

:01:03. > :01:06.you think of the Nicks or the Yankees. Madison Square garden.

:01:07. > :01:11.Tennis at flushing meadow. Now there is a new kid on the block. After

:01:12. > :01:15.years of banging on the door soccer has finally found itself welcomed

:01:16. > :01:19.into the world of US sport. I have come to New York to find some

:01:20. > :01:25.familiar faces, stars from the Premier League who are lighting up

:01:26. > :01:32.the MLS. Being a coach wasn't something that I was planning.

:01:33. > :01:37.People saw something in me that I didn't see myself. Plus, I'll be

:01:38. > :01:43.gauging just how strong a hold the English Premier League has on the

:01:44. > :01:48.hearts of its new US fans. First, I am on my way to meet a

:01:49. > :01:55.three-time Premier League winner and England legend who has been prolific

:01:56. > :02:02.during his time Stateside. You might just recognise him.

:02:03. > :02:15.Fancy seeing you here. Good to see you. Good? Very good. Lampard! Super

:02:16. > :02:22.hit! Lampard goes for the chip, beautiful! Here you are. 38, still

:02:23. > :02:28.going. Yes. Still here! I feel it every morning actually. Is

:02:29. > :02:31.it beginning to take its toll, do you think? I think it's... This

:02:32. > :02:36.sounds negative, like a downward curve after 30. I am sure you know,

:02:37. > :02:42.yeah, I think I found myself having to adapt from probably 30 onwards,

:02:43. > :02:46.and yeah, it gets tougher, but it's probably the love for the game. It's

:02:47. > :02:50.the important thing. All the tough bits, the extra maintenance of the

:02:51. > :02:57.body and gym work and rest and recovery is worth it, if your mind

:02:58. > :03:06.still wants it and I am enjoying it. . It's finished off by Frank

:03:07. > :03:10.Lampard! Harrison to lamb pored. To the right foot. -- Lampard. His

:03:11. > :03:16.second of the game, it's 4-0 New York City! And playing in America,

:03:17. > :03:20.playing in the MLS, is that a little bit probably more manageable than

:03:21. > :03:23.the Premier League, I imagine? The reality is, and it's the question I

:03:24. > :03:26.get asked, what's the difference with the MLS and the Premier League,

:03:27. > :03:28.it's an obvious difference. The Premier League for me is the best in

:03:29. > :03:32.the world, tradition, great players, lots of money bringing in the best

:03:33. > :03:36.in the world. The MLS is a growing league. That's certainly improving,

:03:37. > :03:39.but yeah, of course, it's different and I think we have got in the team

:03:40. > :03:43.I am playing in we have some young kids running around, which is great,

:03:44. > :03:47.helping me, save the legs a little bit. That's tough f you think it's a

:03:48. > :03:52.holiday then it's not going to work that way. How it been playing for

:03:53. > :03:56.Patrick srooir, a player we all know well and he was at Manchester City,

:03:57. > :03:59.but for a while, coaching academy team and he has come here, tough

:04:00. > :04:04.job. Tough start he had, as well. He did have a tough start. The biggest

:04:05. > :04:07.credit I give to Patrick, he came with an idea and principle, he

:04:08. > :04:13.wanted to play from the back. New to us as a team. And preseason and

:04:14. > :04:16.early results weren't great and he could have thrown the towel in and

:04:17. > :04:19.kept it basic. He didn't. He kept doing what he wanted. We have really

:04:20. > :04:22.seen the team grow. Players have grown. They're learning from him.

:04:23. > :04:26.Everybody respects Patrick because of what he did in the game. As a

:04:27. > :04:30.manager he is proving himself in his own right here. We are sitting now

:04:31. > :04:33.towards the end of the season in the play-offs and with a fair chance of

:04:34. > :04:42.doing well, if we play to our best we could go all the way.

:04:43. > :04:46.# Come on you boys in wlu! I have been to one or two MLS games and the

:04:47. > :04:51.atmosphere is different than the English Premier League. I think it's

:04:52. > :04:55.a different culture. Again to go back to the Premier League, it's

:04:56. > :04:59.what we love about it is there is rivalry between teams. We play

:05:00. > :05:04.Chelsea at Tottenham, 3,000 fans that hate each other for that. It's

:05:05. > :05:07.more tribal. Very tribal. Here the culture, the fans come to be

:05:08. > :05:11.entertained, there isn't that rivalry of other teams and I like

:05:12. > :05:14.it. You can take a corner and you don't get called all sorts of names

:05:15. > :05:20.and stuff like that! You appreciate when you play in those conditions. I

:05:21. > :05:25.suppose in many ways the game is growing, do you think the fan base

:05:26. > :05:32.is growing for football or soccer? Yeah, I can't call it soccer. Do you

:05:33. > :05:38.not do it yet? I do speaking here. But not to you. Yeah, I think, it's

:05:39. > :05:41.certainly growing and the whole thing of walking around and not

:05:42. > :05:45.getting recognised is getting less and less. The game's global. We live

:05:46. > :05:51.in a small world these days, social media and it's caught on here.

:05:52. > :05:57.Lampard here for the hat trick. Will it be the first in New York City

:05:58. > :06:02.here? It is. Ladies and gentlemen, number eight, super Frank Lampard!

:06:03. > :06:05.I love it here. I am loving it. Great life, living in the city. Kids

:06:06. > :06:09.are coming over a lot. Me and Christine are really happy. It's

:06:10. > :06:14.been a great experience. If it ended tomorrow it's been amazing

:06:15. > :06:20.experience in terms of that little patch helpfully towards getting to

:06:21. > :06:24.the play-offs. You did it, as well. I got injured. I found it probably

:06:25. > :06:28.more for you I am guessing because you went to a real foreign place,

:06:29. > :06:32.here it's almost like you are at home with the language, etc but it

:06:33. > :06:36.broadens your horizon. I feel wiser for coming and living in a different

:06:37. > :06:39.country and working. Do you wish perhaps now you have experienced

:06:40. > :06:42.living in a different country perhaps would you have enjoyed a

:06:43. > :06:47.spell somewhere in Spain or Italy when you were younger? Yes and no.

:06:48. > :06:50.The yes is because I would have loved to have challenged myself.

:06:51. > :06:53.Loved to have tried to learn a language. I had interest from top

:06:54. > :06:58.clubs in Europe, I could have tested myself. Then I flip it and go, what

:06:59. > :07:02.would that have meant, leaving Chelsea, not being able to be part

:07:03. > :07:06.of an era and team that won the Champions League and the Europia Cup

:07:07. > :07:09.and titles, so the answer is no, basically. The grass isn't always

:07:10. > :07:13.greener. I had a great career in England. Those memories are my

:07:14. > :07:18.career, they're always with me now. How is the Premier League perceived

:07:19. > :07:20.here now? We know it's on NBC, there is a lot of games and people

:07:21. > :07:26.watching it and viewing figures are growing. Is it popular here? It's

:07:27. > :07:33.massive. Massive. I watch every game. You wake up on a Saturday with

:07:34. > :07:39.the time difference, there is a game on at eight, 3.00 game, you can get

:07:40. > :07:44.- you get the 5. 30pm game. Saturday mornings are done. Cup of tea and

:07:45. > :07:48.you watch them all. Great coverage, all the lads love it. Out here it's

:07:49. > :07:52.massive, growing really fast. And yourself, you keep a close eye

:07:53. > :07:55.clearly still on the Premier League. What are you thinking of this

:07:56. > :08:04.season? Fascinating. I am loving it. Loving watching it. I am waiting for

:08:05. > :08:09.the era to really kick in. I was excited when he came in. They needed

:08:10. > :08:14.a different angle from last year. Where do you think it went wrong at

:08:15. > :08:17.Chelsea? I think people relaxed. They won the league and relaxed. The

:08:18. > :08:21.minute you relax in football, you can't turn it back. You turn a

:08:22. > :08:28.switch on it doesn't turn back on again. Southampton lead by 3-1. I

:08:29. > :08:31.think that's why I like him, he is known as a discipline airian, he is

:08:32. > :08:35.working hard in training. I speak to players there and he is working them

:08:36. > :08:38.hard. Trying to organise them on the pitch. They'll be there or

:08:39. > :08:41.thereabouts but not sure they'll win this year but to get back in the

:08:42. > :08:45.Champions League will be seen as a positive if they get in the top

:08:46. > :08:51.four. Jose Mourinho, your old boss, at Manchester, has he still got it?

:08:52. > :08:54.He's still got it, of course he has. You know, again, I think he is

:08:55. > :08:58.trying to find the best team. Improvement there will be to get in

:08:59. > :09:01.the top four. Not sure they can win it with what they've got even though

:09:02. > :09:04.he is a great manager, there is something not there yet. Who do you

:09:05. > :09:09.fancy to win the Premier League this season? I fancy Manchester City. I

:09:10. > :09:14.think they bought well. I love Stones. They've the best goal scorer

:09:15. > :09:18.in the league in Aquero. He is a genius. Loved being there for a year

:09:19. > :09:26.being around him in training. Stand around in training and he will score

:09:27. > :09:32.goals for fun. Would you like to have played for Guardiolo? I would.

:09:33. > :09:36.I would love to even watch him take training. Very forward thinking. I

:09:37. > :09:42.would love to be part of that. You have had a fabulous and long career.

:09:43. > :09:46.Highlights looking back? Um... Champions League. Winning the

:09:47. > :09:53.Champions League is by far the greatest night of my life. Describe

:09:54. > :09:57.what that feels like to achieve the ultimate club trophy win. I just got

:09:58. > :10:01.shudders then you mentioning it, that sounds corny but I did. It

:10:02. > :10:04.resonates, not the game, I don't remember the game well, I didn't

:10:05. > :10:08.enjoy the game, I just wanted to get a result. Those games you don't

:10:09. > :10:13.always enjoy them. To say the flip, I enjoyed the hour or so on the

:10:14. > :10:18.pitch afterwards, all the fans down one end, I jumped in for a cuddle,

:10:19. > :10:23.you could smell alcohol. The boys had a good day out. It was

:10:24. > :10:27.brilliant, I look back and we should have won more. We won three and

:10:28. > :10:34.should have won five. But we did win that Champions League and that

:10:35. > :10:41.sticks out in my career. Lampard, Frank Lampard for Chelsea!

:10:42. > :10:49.That could be the championship. How would you like to be remembered?

:10:50. > :10:54.Um... Well, it's not easy to put in a short answer. I suppose hard

:10:55. > :10:58.working. Pride myself on hard work. I like to think I have been a good

:10:59. > :11:02.team-mate and hard worker. I suppose if I look back on the club career I

:11:03. > :11:09.would like to to have made a difference. Drogba can say that. So

:11:10. > :11:13.can you, don't worry. People sometimes say I - sometimes jump on

:11:14. > :11:16.the back of stuff. I like to think I made a difference to Chelsea and I

:11:17. > :11:23.hope people can remember that. For England obviously we didn't do that.

:11:24. > :11:29.I go back to hard working for England and very proud: Frank

:11:30. > :11:34.Lampard on his 609th Premier League appearance leaves the field for one

:11:35. > :11:38.final time. However long, whether you do another career or you don't,

:11:39. > :11:44.what does Frank Lampard want to do post-football? I certainly want to

:11:45. > :11:50.get coaching bammings and the FA have reached out and -- badges and

:11:51. > :11:56.the FA have reached out dps An Americanism! They've reached out to

:11:57. > :12:02.help me, sit down and plan how - because I said it recently, I do

:12:03. > :12:05.think the FA have to help players. To encourage them into coaching?

:12:06. > :12:09.Encourage it. You know what, otherwise the TV role is a great

:12:10. > :12:13.role, the media is there. If you lose them to that too early you lose

:12:14. > :12:16.them completely. At least it's an option. I have interest in coaching

:12:17. > :12:19.and I would like to test myself at that level. I am not making

:12:20. > :12:22.declarations here but if I get the badges I will possibly do that. I

:12:23. > :12:26.like the media stuff, I have had little bits of doing media and enjoy

:12:27. > :12:30.that too. It's highly skilled now. It's not the old-fashioned game of

:12:31. > :12:33.two halves tool. It's deep-thinking and I like that too. Those would be

:12:34. > :12:38.the two possibilities, I think. OK. Frank, thank you very much. Have a

:12:39. > :12:53.nice day! And you! Thanks, Gary. I appreciate it!

:12:54. > :12:58.The MLS has plenty of competition for the attention of US football

:12:59. > :13:02.fans. The Premier League is big business over here. With lots of

:13:03. > :13:07.recognisable figures broadcasting the English game to America each

:13:08. > :13:17.week. We went behind the scenes with NBC to watch them watching us.

:13:18. > :13:24.The following is an NBC sports presentation of the Premier League

:13:25. > :13:29.on NBC... In the studio this morning huge

:13:30. > :13:35.congratulations, a daddy for the second time... Typical Saturday, my

:13:36. > :13:41.alarm goes off about 3. 15 am. Get to the studio for about 4.00am. Hair

:13:42. > :13:45.and make-up. On air at 6. 30 am. Then we show all of the 3.00

:13:46. > :13:51.kick-offs, which are 10.00 here and the late game, as well. There are

:13:52. > :13:57.not that many better jobs, Gary probably does have a better job, I

:13:58. > :14:00.am probably second. Finding the Premier League when I was young was

:14:01. > :14:04.not easy and finding soccer for general in this country was not

:14:05. > :14:07.easy. I grew up, I remember it really well, Sunday mornings before

:14:08. > :14:11.Church I would constantly be searching for this game. When I was

:14:12. > :14:15.young the guys would make fun of me about it, it was Bolton that I fell

:14:16. > :14:21.in love with immediately because of JJ.

:14:22. > :14:25.There's nothing like American football here in the United States,

:14:26. > :14:30.they have a stranglehold on 20 million viewers, but you can tune

:14:31. > :14:34.into any Premier League match and after ten minutes, you would have no

:14:35. > :14:39.idea of what's going on. Great selling point for belief. This was a

:14:40. > :14:45.controversial moment, Watford, there is contact, I think it should be a

:14:46. > :14:49.penalty. The difficult dance for us every weekend is when you have the

:14:50. > :14:53.hard-core fan, you don't want to dumb it down to much where they feel

:14:54. > :14:56.you aren't talking to them, you wanted to feel like they're

:14:57. > :15:02.broadcast but you want to be inclusive. West Brom defender 's

:15:03. > :15:05.going down, brilliant from the Brazilian, Coutinho. We have to be a

:15:06. > :15:08.bit careful with some of the analysis and I think to be fair we

:15:09. > :15:15.have a nice balance of including everybody but also giving them some

:15:16. > :15:19.nuggets of information, that was interesting, I didn't know that.

:15:20. > :15:23.That's the balance we try and get, teaching but also getting people

:15:24. > :15:26.excited about the league. I don't want to say that there is a

:15:27. > :15:30.misperception around the world about the knowledge in our country but I

:15:31. > :15:33.think being an American we have that feeling. We have a generation of

:15:34. > :15:39.people my age who have grown up with the game. We were trying to get

:15:40. > :15:44.Match of the Day. A generation of people who now get the game, love

:15:45. > :15:48.the game and they would like to wanted more than anyone else. Jose

:15:49. > :15:56.Mourinho returning to Chelsea as the Manchester manager, what reaction is

:15:57. > :15:58.he going to get? I think he will get a good reaction. There are

:15:59. > :16:02.supporters groups all over the United States, you will find

:16:03. > :16:06.splintered supporter groups, not just in New York City, and they get

:16:07. > :16:11.together at the weekends. COMMENTATOR: The build-up has ended

:16:12. > :16:15.and we are under way. Jose Mourinho is in the away dugout. An

:16:16. > :16:21.opportunity, it's going to be the opening goal! It's a nightmare start

:16:22. > :16:27.to Jose Mourinho's return to Stamford Bridge. On Saturday we will

:16:28. > :16:33.have people coming over and it is like the NFL, people watching

:16:34. > :16:38.football, and America it is the morning so it is the perfect time to

:16:39. > :16:43.do it. Hazard to take it to the near post and a chance at the far post

:16:44. > :16:47.and it is in, Gary Cahill! I think the coverage is what makes it

:16:48. > :16:53.popular, everyone can watch the games, they can see their favourite

:16:54. > :16:59.team. Into the penalty area, Eden Hazard, getting the shot away and it

:17:00. > :17:03.is a delightful goal. You used to be streaming it, waking up at weird

:17:04. > :17:09.times, subscribing to weird channels but I can watch it on any channel,

:17:10. > :17:18.streaming it, it has been awesome. In by Pedro. The left foot, N'Golo

:17:19. > :17:22.Kante! It is four Mac we come here for pretty much every Chelsea match.

:17:23. > :17:26.You meet people here, they enjoy it and then they wanted themselves.

:17:27. > :17:35.People grew up watching Chelsea, Barcelona, wanting to be Messi,

:17:36. > :17:36.Hazard, not Michael Jordan now. And a mighty cheer greeting the final

:17:37. > :17:48.whistle. Don't tell me you are training! Good

:17:49. > :18:01.evening. To take on your first managerial

:18:02. > :18:04.role at a club that has only existed for less than two years would appear

:18:05. > :18:08.to be quite a daunting prospect but Patrick Vieira has guided New York

:18:09. > :18:11.City FC to the play-offs in his first season. Better find out how he

:18:12. > :18:18.did it! Vieira! Oh, it's a wonderful goal.

:18:19. > :18:38.So important, the Frenchman. Patrick, it is easy, this managerial

:18:39. > :18:43.game, isn't it? Easy? Not at all. You make it look easy. It is going

:18:44. > :18:49.well. It is going well but we had a difficult period. We are in a very

:18:50. > :18:53.good period at the moment. You spend most of your career in European

:18:54. > :18:57.football. Was it a big decision to come here, did you have to think

:18:58. > :19:00.about it long and hard? I had to think about it, yes, because when

:19:01. > :19:05.you have spent so much time in Europe it is really difficult to

:19:06. > :19:11.move but at the same time I was really convinced it was the right

:19:12. > :19:21.place for me. The people in Manchester, knowing that New York is

:19:22. > :19:25.part of the City group, knowing the people would help me as a coach and

:19:26. > :19:33.I made the right decision. You're enjoying it? I love it. How can we

:19:34. > :19:36.improve when we are in possession of the ball? Spending time in the

:19:37. > :19:42.Academy in Manchester before taking charge of this team I think was

:19:43. > :19:50.important because it made me believe that this is something I would

:19:51. > :19:59.enjoy. Being a coach wasn't something I was planning. And people

:20:00. > :20:06.saw something in me that I didn't see myself. How important are the

:20:07. > :20:11.three superstars for you? They've been fantastic. Not just on the

:20:12. > :20:19.field. The way that they interact with other players. Helping me to

:20:20. > :20:25.send a positive message to the group.

:20:26. > :20:39.Nice to see you. How's it going, enjoying it? Yeah. Patrick is doing

:20:40. > :20:48.good? A passionate coach. He has changed the team because he's a

:20:49. > :21:02.European coach. He gets it. Good to see you, mate. All good here? Do you

:21:03. > :21:06.remember it? Not actually born when I played! I was on Match of the Day

:21:07. > :21:12.one time and I had footage of a bunch of kids at Liverpool with Rafa

:21:13. > :21:20.Benitez and you were commentating. Not playing, though! Great to meet

:21:21. > :21:29.you, anyway. Good luck. Thank you very much. Can't be bad, this. It's

:21:30. > :21:39.lovely out here. Yeah, brilliant. I got a picture with Pirlo. He said a

:21:40. > :21:43.few words. He is a good lad. He looks so cool. Nice to meet you.

:21:44. > :22:15.Cheers. If I don't see you. What's the change now under Patrick

:22:16. > :22:19.Vieira? Of course Patrick does a lot of pushing in training, he is the

:22:20. > :22:28.most important guy in the production of the team. Getting victories and

:22:29. > :22:32.points. More stability than is the first year. Patrick is doing great,

:22:33. > :22:40.the standard he has brought to the club, the players, he has given us a

:22:41. > :22:43.lift. The dedication, he is here early and he leaves late. The

:22:44. > :22:52.evolution in such a short time, he has a great future.

:22:53. > :23:00.What's your target for this football club? To win trophies, to give this

:23:01. > :23:07.football club a proper identity about the way we want to play. It's

:23:08. > :23:14.a fantastic City. It's a diverse City. The City doesn't sleep, all

:23:15. > :23:20.the time it's moving. I want the teams to be like that, the team to

:23:21. > :23:25.play with energy, I want the team to reflect the City. It will take time

:23:26. > :23:41.to do it but hopefully working with Claudio and the people we can do it.

:23:42. > :23:51.You were a fiercely competitive football. How is it being a manager,

:23:52. > :23:56.though? It is difficult, it is difficult. It is difficult because

:23:57. > :24:01.when a manager you on the bench. Having the feeling that you don't

:24:02. > :24:06.control anything. Ask them to come back quickly. You make the decision

:24:07. > :24:13.but you aren't on the field and hoping. We are going to send him

:24:14. > :24:16.next to David. It would be difficult for a long time and only experience

:24:17. > :24:25.will help you to deal with it better. We are going to put on Jason

:24:26. > :24:31.and you are going to play at four. Jason is central. What's important

:24:32. > :24:37.for me is to understand who I am as a manager and what I want to

:24:38. > :24:43.achieve. I think if I want to be really successful, that's what I

:24:44. > :24:50.have to do. But if I try to do something like Mancini, the players

:24:51. > :24:53.will smell that it isn't Patrick and when they smell that, it's over.

:24:54. > :25:34.Heh, heh! Close to David! Do you have further ambitions to

:25:35. > :25:41.manage, you know, one of the big clubs at home? I think every coach

:25:42. > :25:45.does around the world. I want to manage the biggest club in Europe

:25:46. > :25:53.one day, no doubt about it and this is what drives me. You know, it may

:25:54. > :26:00.happen, it may not happen. The way that my work will dictate the next

:26:01. > :26:10.step but I'm really happy where I am at the moment and that is important

:26:11. > :26:12.for me. This difficult period, allowed us to be a force on the

:26:13. > :26:24.pitch and to be where we are today. I wish you well, Patrick, thanks.

:26:25. > :26:26.Nice talking to you. A very busy week in the Premier League, let's

:26:27. > :26:41.look back at the action. Mane, he has Coutinho in support.

:26:42. > :26:49.Coutinho! Fabulously finished. Only two goals for your team? Sorry? How

:26:50. > :26:54.was it only two? Foster. A terrific save from Foster. I think it was

:26:55. > :27:00.faster. Oxlade-Chamberlain into the penalty area. Offside, Arsenal

:27:01. > :27:05.thought they had won. At least you can have a drink on your first day.

:27:06. > :27:12.When you win, you deserve it but not when you don't. Winston Reid! He's

:27:13. > :27:17.won it for West Ham. Offside, you don't want me to say anything else.

:27:18. > :27:21.Should be given offside. Have you spoken to the officiating team? Yeah

:27:22. > :27:31.they think it's on-site. You obviously disagree? -- on site.

:27:32. > :27:37.That's what I just said. -- onside. Overplaying that, Redmond! 1-0

:27:38. > :27:41.Southampton. Playing the way that you want to play? The way I want to

:27:42. > :27:53.play is passing to the striker. Dear oh dear. Sissoko has caught

:27:54. > :28:00.Harry Arter. Pete isn't going to let this go, he's incensed. -- he isn't.

:28:01. > :28:04.That's all from The Premier League Show this week but it seems that

:28:05. > :28:08.soccer is finally starting to find its feet in America. Who knows, the

:28:09. > :28:14.way it's going, they may even start calling it football! I'm going to be

:28:15. > :28:17.returning to the UK for Match of the Day on Saturday and you can catch up

:28:18. > :28:35.with the weekend's action across the BBC.

:28:36. > :28:41.Gabby Logan will be back next week, Wednesday at 10pm. Goodbye from the

:28:42. > :28:44.Big Apple.
