:00:40. > :00:45.Welcome to The Premier League Show. This week we are in west London on

:00:46. > :00:48.the fashionable Kings Road ahead of Rose's first return to Stamford

:00:49. > :00:53.Bridge as manager of Manchester United. We will delve into that and

:00:54. > :00:56.all of the other Premier League stories later with Graeme Le Saux

:00:57. > :01:02.over pastries and coffee. But first we had south of the river to Crystal

:01:03. > :01:06.Palace, Alan Pardew took over at the Eagles in 2015, he had a top ten

:01:07. > :01:12.finish in his first season and an FA Cup final in his second. He has

:01:13. > :01:14.given Gary Lineker Access -- exclusive access into the life of a

:01:15. > :01:30.top manager. Why are you doing that in front of a

:01:31. > :01:36.camera like that? We want some positivity, boys.

:01:37. > :01:39.We have talked all week about a missing but first man, so put

:01:40. > :01:45.crosses in, give yourself a chance of missing him. You might need to

:01:46. > :01:49.lift it, might need to hit it early. Get yourself ready, three or four

:01:50. > :01:53.minutes on the process. Get your pads on, get taped up.

:01:54. > :01:57.Always on the move, just trying to get on the ball, trying to get on

:01:58. > :02:02.the ball, come in there, stay wide. Think about getting on the ball. You

:02:03. > :02:04.will have to be our best player today.

:02:05. > :02:08.The Buck four needs to be narrow when we defend, we don't want Joe

:02:09. > :02:13.running into the back four all the time. Keep the distance, otherwise

:02:14. > :02:18.we end up flats and can't get to the ball.

:02:19. > :02:24.These guys will not be due for pace, they are looking for clever stuff.

:02:25. > :02:36.-- these guys will not be to you for fake -- beat you for pace.

:02:37. > :02:53.And it has gone in! Pardew, 4-3, Palace!

:02:54. > :03:01.Classic English football right there. Trying to get the team is

:03:02. > :03:12.playing the same way throughout? Yes. There is Director Bright.

:03:13. > :03:17.You have been a manager for a long time for lots of clubs, how has the

:03:18. > :03:22.Premier League change for managers over the years, do you feel?

:03:23. > :03:27.It has changed. I think social media plays a big part now, the pressure

:03:28. > :03:33.that comes on us, because that generates you guys into action. So

:03:34. > :03:38.there is a bit more scrutiny on the game and the results.

:03:39. > :03:43.Do you follow social media? Have a little look. So you keep an eye on

:03:44. > :03:46.what the fans say, because they don't hold back?

:03:47. > :03:51.No, but you can't live your life by it. You would never be able to get

:03:52. > :03:55.yourself up. It is tough enough as a football manager these days to keep

:03:56. > :04:00.yourself positive all the time, particularly with the younger

:04:01. > :04:04.players. Every generation seems to be, at the moment, every year, more

:04:05. > :04:11.ingrained in their phone. I know you are like that with your Twitter.

:04:12. > :04:15.Occasionally. So it is something that you have to understand. The

:04:16. > :04:20.bigger difference, I think, is the ownership of the football clubs is

:04:21. > :04:26.becoming an issue for football managers up and down the country. In

:04:27. > :04:34.what sense? There are chairman and chief executive is getting far too

:04:35. > :04:39.involved in the football matters. Have you got the balance with Steve

:04:40. > :04:43.Parish? I think so, I have a great relationship with him, I admire him

:04:44. > :04:47.and what he has done in business and the way he has conducted himself,

:04:48. > :04:51.particularly how he has conducted business at this football club. He

:04:52. > :04:56.has let the managers get on with it, of course. Because a hands-on

:04:57. > :05:01.chairman he does the financial deals, which suits me, but of course

:05:02. > :05:05.he wants my decision and my final say on all the stuff we do.

:05:06. > :05:12.Recruitment, you can't believe how much detail be put into that now.

:05:13. > :05:20.Everybody knows he is a good player, there is no question. What makes a

:05:21. > :05:24.good chairman? Gobbler if he comes back to me and

:05:25. > :05:28.says it is worth a go, we will look at it.

:05:29. > :05:33.I think a good chairman is very important if you lose. We lost at

:05:34. > :05:40.the weekend. His reaction was very professional. Didn't play very well.

:05:41. > :05:46.Unusual. He asked me the reasons why, he expects me to get on with

:05:47. > :05:52.it. Also and be very supportive in difficult times. Tell me how you go

:05:53. > :05:58.about recruiting? You brought in four big names? The example would be

:05:59. > :06:04.the difference that I have here and Newcastle. At Newcastle the

:06:05. > :06:08.financial elements came first, and then the technical side was, OK,

:06:09. > :06:15.that should fit. Whereas here the luxury I have is that the technical

:06:16. > :06:20.aspect and how it fits comes first, that is most important. How was it

:06:21. > :06:24.different at Newcastle? Obviously you were frustrated at times, they

:06:25. > :06:28.are now in the Championship, do you think they got it wrong?

:06:29. > :06:35.I would like to think that they have learned some lessons. I think Mike

:06:36. > :06:39.at Sports Direct has learned some lessons, and I think he has had to

:06:40. > :06:42.learn lessons on the football side. I kept nagging and telling him that

:06:43. > :06:47.I thought the process was wrong that they were doing, I made that very

:06:48. > :06:50.clear behind closed doors, never in public, but I don't think he will

:06:51. > :06:54.have a problem with me saying it now. The be all and end all is the

:06:55. > :06:59.vision of the manager, where he wants to take the team forward, that

:07:00. > :07:05.must come first. Then of course there is a financial element.

:07:06. > :07:11.Stephen would not let me sign... If I wanted to bring Neymar... Really?!

:07:12. > :07:16.He would probably fancy it and might sell a few things exoneration but it

:07:17. > :07:22.all has to fit after. These are the players that fit what we need. Go

:07:23. > :07:29.and get me one of them. Benteke a jumping superbly.

:07:30. > :07:34.Christian Benteke, how much thought went into that move, that was a lot

:07:35. > :07:39.of money for Crystal Palace to buy somebody like that, did you have to

:07:40. > :07:44.push the chairman? Yes, sweet talking, had a couple of dinners

:07:45. > :07:48.with him and everything else, yeah. I kept saying, Steve, this is a

:07:49. > :07:58.no-brainer. Give Liverpool 40 million. He wouldn't, by the way.

:07:59. > :08:08.You love closing down, don't pretend you don't! Look at that smile! That

:08:09. > :08:17.is what we need tomorrow. Do you ever look at people coming

:08:18. > :08:23.in, managers who have come into it and always have great players like

:08:24. > :08:28.Guardiola, are their teams that you occasionally NVA tinge, or more? A

:08:29. > :08:33.little bit more! Do you ever think, why wasn't I given a chance that one

:08:34. > :08:38.of those clubs? You kind of earn the right sometimes to get in that

:08:39. > :08:43.position, and I respect that, Jurgen Klopp, Guardiola, Mourinho have

:08:44. > :08:47.earned the right to be at those sorts of clubs. I have not yet. But

:08:48. > :08:51.there is another side to football management and getting the best out

:08:52. > :08:56.of the group you have, that is all I can focus on. I have always tried to

:08:57. > :09:00.do that. At Newcastle I had a very unbalanced team, very unbalanced

:09:01. > :09:03.squad at times, very difficult to pick up results when you don't feel

:09:04. > :09:09.that the players being signed for you fit what you want, it makes it a

:09:10. > :09:13.little bit frustrating. I was a little bit frustrated. I don't have

:09:14. > :09:19.that excuse here. Likewise, I think with the top managers, it is always

:09:20. > :09:22.a great challenge. In a way, from where I have come from, and you

:09:23. > :09:27.probably played against me all you would not have remembered me much,

:09:28. > :09:32.it has been a long road for me to get to this and I am very proud to

:09:33. > :09:37.be here. I enjoy going up against them, I have beaten a few of them

:09:38. > :09:41.and seen a lot of them come and go already, supposedly very good

:09:42. > :09:51.managers. Get it into the front!

:09:52. > :10:00.Great ball, son! Go on! Shoot! CHEERING

:10:01. > :10:03.How does your moods reflect results? As a younger manager, the emotion of

:10:04. > :10:14.the defeat clouds your thinking a little bit. You're angry,

:10:15. > :10:17.frustrated, when you get a bit more experienced I think you can have a

:10:18. > :10:25.bit more thought process of why was that?

:10:26. > :10:31.When I was younger, you know, I would be a lot angrier than I am

:10:32. > :10:35.now. A lot more frustrated than I am

:10:36. > :10:41.today. That does not mean to say my winning

:10:42. > :10:45.passion is nonetheless, and desperate, desperate until the next

:10:46. > :10:51.game now. What a save!

:10:52. > :11:01.How has it changed, managing players over the years? In our day, it was

:11:02. > :11:07.different, can you still do that nowadays? Can you have a rant? If

:11:08. > :11:12.you have got a five that 11 English player in the dressing room, I could

:11:13. > :11:16.probably still do that. -- if you have got five out of 11 English

:11:17. > :11:20.players. A French player or an African player, if you destroy them

:11:21. > :11:25.at half-time or a very critical of them at half-time, they take it very

:11:26. > :11:29.personally. It is not natural for them, they want to have a solution.

:11:30. > :11:41.There is more thought process to them. Johan Botha by, for example, I

:11:42. > :11:45.will still be strong with -- Yohan Cabaye, for example, I will still be

:11:46. > :11:50.strong with Yohan Cabaye but not in front of the group, I will do

:11:51. > :11:54.privately. Are you trying to change things a little? Good god I

:11:55. > :11:56.inherited a team that had come out of the Championship, if I was

:11:57. > :12:01.talking positively about them I would say that you are brilliant on

:12:02. > :12:06.the break. Because they were not true good at keeping the ball or

:12:07. > :12:10.dictating the pace. This year I have tried to change and say that we

:12:11. > :12:18.cannot go on playing like that. It might keep as 15th or 16th but it

:12:19. > :12:23.will not get this into the top ten or Europe. Has less to winning the

:12:24. > :12:25.league made it difficult for managers like you, because perhaps

:12:26. > :12:31.the expectation from the chairman and the fans is greater, if they can

:12:32. > :12:35.do it, why can't we? I think it's nice to have a little bit of that.

:12:36. > :12:43.Not that it bothers me, if I am honest. It's astonishing, amazing. A

:12:44. > :12:48.miracle, really. I don't know what you want to call it, and I know it

:12:49. > :12:52.is your team, but I loved it, all of my players wanted Leicester to

:12:53. > :12:56.hammer one of the top clubs. And look at what of the top clubs have

:12:57. > :13:00.gone, this is the problem, they were all a bit embarrassed, let's get the

:13:01. > :13:07.best manager we can add through money at it and make sure it does

:13:08. > :13:13.not happen again. -- best manager we can and throw money at it.

:13:14. > :13:18.The whole England thing, we have had a few stories over the last few

:13:19. > :13:22.weeks, obviously, with Big Sam and what happened, and the Euros and

:13:23. > :13:26.another failure, there is more talk about who will be the next England

:13:27. > :13:30.manager. You have been mentioned on occasion. I think this whole England

:13:31. > :13:35.thing is becoming a bit of a problem, if I'm honest. It might be

:13:36. > :13:49.a good time to let Gareth habit, I think. You know him well. I know him

:13:50. > :13:51.very well and I think he has the attributes to do it. I have never

:13:52. > :13:54.been offered the job. If I am offered the job, I am English, would

:13:55. > :13:58.I turn it down? I don't know. That is another question. I think I have

:13:59. > :14:01.the experience to do it, I think I can do it one day. I don't know if

:14:02. > :14:02.this is the time. I just want to hope, like you do, that at some

:14:03. > :14:19.point we get it right. This season, for Crystal Palace,

:14:20. > :14:24.what do you want? I think we can do well in the league this year. For

:14:25. > :14:32.Crystal Palace, what is doing well in the lead? Success for this club

:14:33. > :14:38.is being in the top ten, without a shadow of a doubt. From tenth to

:14:39. > :14:43.15th, I would say, in this particular year, in the change of

:14:44. > :14:47.style, is pretty good. Anywhere below that, you're in that area

:14:48. > :14:51.where it isn't a good season, and you're going to start reflecting and

:14:52. > :14:57.having a look at changing the squad again. I don't want to do that. I

:14:58. > :15:02.think this team in the next two years could be decent. Denying space

:15:03. > :15:07.in the units when they have it, switching play, quick throws. If you

:15:08. > :15:11.switch the play, they cannot press you, the way they play. It's

:15:12. > :15:15.impossible. If you see them going back to Joe on the edge of the

:15:16. > :15:21.box... Don't worry about that. You've got time. Get back in your

:15:22. > :15:31.halt and get your goal. Come on! Good luck. Good luck, Joe. Good

:15:32. > :15:45.luck, Fraser. Usurer imagination. These strong today, mate.

:15:46. > :15:55.I promised you coffee and pastries. Welcome to The Premier League Show.

:15:56. > :16:00.Alan Pardew does feel, one of very few Englishmen in the Premier League

:16:01. > :16:03.as a manager, and also a difficult life. If you have a good

:16:04. > :16:10.relationship with your chairman it makes thing a little easier, and he

:16:11. > :16:13.certainly has that. He is close to Steve and Allen in that sense. The

:16:14. > :16:19.fact they work so well together can only benefit what happens on the

:16:20. > :16:22.pitch. If you've got an understanding and relationship with

:16:23. > :16:26.the person responsible for the purse strings, you've got an opportunity

:16:27. > :16:33.to get the right players for you. And to play as you want, which

:16:34. > :16:38.didn't happen to him at Newcastle. His comments about the relationship

:16:39. > :16:41.that he had up at Newcastle were not... It is fascinating to see

:16:42. > :16:47.where that line is drawn. It's all right to go for dinner with the

:16:48. > :16:50.chairman and enjoy his company socially, but you have business

:16:51. > :16:57.decisions to make ultimately, and different opinions at times. It's

:16:58. > :17:01.fascinating how they manage that relationship. The recruitment is

:17:02. > :17:05.interesting, and the responsibility for what they've spent. They've

:17:06. > :17:11.spent big this season. ?30 million for a striker is a lot for Palace.

:17:12. > :17:16.So interesting for him to say top ten to top 15. A few years ago, if

:17:17. > :17:21.you spend that on a striker, you'd be expecting to knock on the doors

:17:22. > :17:25.of European places. The money has gone up and they are not alone in

:17:26. > :17:31.that. Players are more expensive, and you have got to keep up. He has

:17:32. > :17:36.to be careful answering that question. It is a difficult question

:17:37. > :17:42.is a manager, because if he says top ten, we start to question him if he

:17:43. > :17:45.doesn't reach that target. Realistically, the players they have

:17:46. > :17:51.bought, the way the team is set up, I think a top-10 finish is

:17:52. > :17:58.realistic. If they can keep that momentum, they've got a fantastic

:17:59. > :18:04.chance. Is a top 15 Place success? For all of them in those positions,

:18:05. > :18:08.a bad season would be 15th. None of them can afford to get relegated

:18:09. > :18:13.because of the baggage that comes with that. It's more than just the

:18:14. > :18:17.money. It is really important for Crystal Palace to make sure they

:18:18. > :18:21.have the most momentum out of the teams around them. He is not going

:18:22. > :18:28.for that England manager 's job at any time soon! Let's have a look

:18:29. > :18:39.back at the last seven days in the Premier League.

:18:40. > :18:42.COMMENTATOR: Sets up Gosling! The look on Mike Phelan's face tells you

:18:43. > :18:58.all you need to know. Towards Mesut Ozil. Happy birthday!

:18:59. > :19:02.Disappointed, but there is some positives as well. Hopefully, we can

:19:03. > :19:17.build on that. Lukaku goes on and scores! We showed unbelievable

:19:18. > :19:23.spirit today. COMMENTATOR: 2-0! Two goals by Joe

:19:24. > :19:35.Allen. In the last games, there's been a distinct change.

:19:36. > :19:47.COMMENTATOR: Austin is in! I love to score goals, and I want to celebrate

:19:48. > :19:56.everyone I score. What a save! The reactions from their crowd was

:19:57. > :19:57.disappointment. Here are next weekend's fixtures. Eight games in

:19:58. > :20:12.total on Saturday. Despite winning the title three

:20:13. > :20:16.times in two spells at Stamford Bridge, the special one's

:20:17. > :20:21.acrimonious departure last season still stings. His career has taken

:20:22. > :20:31.him from Porto to Man United, but he will always be made in Chelsea. I

:20:32. > :20:37.think I'm the special one. COMMENTATOR: Here's the man who has

:20:38. > :20:48.made it all happen. Here's Drogba. Magnificent! Chelsea are champions.

:20:49. > :20:56.Chelsea have scored. Chelsea are the first FA Cup winners at the Wembley.

:20:57. > :21:03.The special one has left the club. What a shocker! Jose Mourinho is

:21:04. > :21:10.heading back to English Premier League side, Chelsea. We are

:21:11. > :21:24.ecstatic. It is a fantastic day. COMMENTATOR: Fabregas! Their first

:21:25. > :21:31.title in five years. I'm very happy. I'm very proud. At the same time, I

:21:32. > :21:36.need a rest. I'm tired. Jose Mourinho has been sacked. Nine

:21:37. > :21:47.defeats this season. One point above the relegation zone.

:21:48. > :21:56.Stamford Bridge is just a stone's throw away from here, and it will be

:21:57. > :22:00.a fantastic called in when he comes out there for the first time as

:22:01. > :22:05.manager of Manchester United. What reception do you think he will get?

:22:06. > :22:09.I think he will love it. I bet he can't wait, because he will get all

:22:10. > :22:14.the attention. I bet he will come out early and sit in the dugout. I

:22:15. > :22:19.think it will be a good reception from the Chelsea fans, despite the

:22:20. > :22:23.cloud he left under. He did a huge amount for that team in two spells.

:22:24. > :22:27.I think fans will remember that. As soon as the teams come out on the

:22:28. > :22:33.pitch, they will forget about that and then treat him as any other

:22:34. > :22:38.opposing manager, especially if his team does well. I hope there's a bit

:22:39. > :22:43.more entertainment about this batch. I'm hopeful, but I'm also realistic.

:22:44. > :22:49.I don't think any Chelsea fans will be surprised at the way he set up

:22:50. > :22:53.his side to face Liverpool. He's very pragmatic about the way he

:22:54. > :22:57.plays a size that he sees as challengers for the title. So why

:22:58. > :23:03.wouldn't he be any different at Stamford Bridge? Against Liverpool,

:23:04. > :23:09.he couldn't afford to lose that game, that would be three games lost

:23:10. > :23:14.in the first eight matches. It is a good base for Manchester United. I

:23:15. > :23:18.expect them to start the same at Stamford Bridge. Funnily enough, I

:23:19. > :23:24.was at the game on Monday, and in the first half, Pogba played further

:23:25. > :23:28.forward. He didn't play in a three-man midfield. He supported

:23:29. > :23:32.Ibrahimovic. So they were a bit more positive in the first half than

:23:33. > :23:37.people believe, although as the game went on, they started to withdraw.

:23:38. > :23:43.He felt that a point was good enough at this stage of the season,

:23:44. > :23:49.pragmatic, as you say. Stage one of what he wants to achieve and Man

:23:50. > :23:52.United is making sure that team is disciplined, understand its

:23:53. > :23:57.responsibilities out of possession, and then build the creativity from

:23:58. > :24:01.there. I expect to see the same again at the weekend against

:24:02. > :24:05.Chelsea. Let's talk about Conte and how he has taken to live in the

:24:06. > :24:10.Premier League and at Chelsea. He seemed a bit cautious at first. Was

:24:11. > :24:15.he working out personnel and the Premier League? I think he wanted to

:24:16. > :24:20.look at the players. Quality suffered a lot from the effects of

:24:21. > :24:25.last season. Morale was pretty low. He's given them a chance to prove

:24:26. > :24:30.themselves. They have been inconsistent, and some of their

:24:31. > :24:34.players, like Hazard, are not firing on all cylinders. Now he has changed

:24:35. > :24:39.the system, they look more comfortable. Just one match with the

:24:40. > :24:44.new system, but they looked in total control against a poor Leicester

:24:45. > :24:49.side. I think he will stick with his back three and get more out of

:24:50. > :24:53.players like Hazard and Pedro. You will have different systems, and it

:24:54. > :24:58.will be intriguing. It will be who can control the ball and frustrate

:24:59. > :25:02.their opponent. It's whether Chelsea will take the game to Man United,

:25:03. > :25:07.and whether Man United will put the block up again and try and score on

:25:08. > :25:17.the counterattack. Do you think the emotion of the situation would

:25:18. > :25:20.bother a character like Mourinho? I think he will love the attention

:25:21. > :25:23.when he gets out there, but once the game starts, his aim will be to get

:25:24. > :25:29.out of there with one point, all three points. It has been raining

:25:30. > :25:34.penalties in the Premier League, with six awarded last weekend alone.

:25:35. > :25:39.We asked Mark Schwarzer to step into our studio and give us some tips on

:25:40. > :25:43.saving from the spot. This weekend we saw just how

:25:44. > :25:47.valuable goalkeepers can be to their team when it comes to spot kicks.

:25:48. > :25:52.There have been more penalties awarded at this stage of the season

:25:53. > :25:57.than in the previous five years, four penalties in every round of

:25:58. > :26:04.Premier League fixtures. What can keepers do to increase their chances

:26:05. > :26:09.of being a heroresearch. Study your opponents' technique and know where

:26:10. > :26:13.they are likely to shoot. Secondly, have a good starting position, on

:26:14. > :26:17.your toes with your body weight forward. Thirdly, be confident

:26:18. > :26:23.enough to stay on your feet and let the penalty taker make the first

:26:24. > :26:29.move. On Saturday, we had Man City against Everton, and De Bruyne. The

:26:30. > :26:38.keeper made himself look big, which says, beat me. Make the first move.

:26:39. > :26:44.He waits to the last second and is able to use his lament to make a

:26:45. > :26:51.save to his left side. Same game, but now Aguero against the keeper.

:26:52. > :26:55.Aguero loves to watch the keeper and wait as long as possible, but of

:26:56. > :27:08.course, the keeper waited longer, and made another great save.

:27:09. > :27:17.Then Leicester V Swansea, and Mahrez against Fabianski. Last season,

:27:18. > :27:23.Mahrez took several penalties. All of them were low, and Fabianski

:27:24. > :27:30.would have known this. It's all about reading which way he would go.

:27:31. > :27:34.As he steps up, you can see by his body language there is only one way

:27:35. > :27:41.he can go. And Fabianski reacts really well. Now Bournemouth against

:27:42. > :27:49.Palace. Boruc is one of the best at Reading penalties. He reads Cabaye's

:27:50. > :27:56.body position well. History shows that Cabaye likes to hit them high.

:27:57. > :28:03.Spurs the Man City. A different approach, maybe because Lamela is

:28:04. > :28:09.not a regular penalty taker. Out of position, looking disinterested. It

:28:10. > :28:13.is not until Lamela's ran up that he decides to shuffle across the goal,

:28:14. > :28:19.until finally setting himself for the kick. It was his way of putting

:28:20. > :28:23.Lamela off. With more penalties being awarded than before, keepers

:28:24. > :28:28.that are strong in these situations will be invaluable.

:28:29. > :28:33.I know you didn't take many penalties, but did you give any way?

:28:34. > :28:37.Just one, for handball against Middlesbrough. But it wasn't a

:28:38. > :28:42.penalty, and I'm still bitter and frustrated about it! Thank you for

:28:43. > :28:47.joining us today. Next week, Gary Lineker travels to the US to see how

:28:48. > :28:52.the Premier League is stateside, and meets up with some old friends. If

:28:53. > :28:57.you ever missed a programme, you can catch up on the iPlayer. From both

:28:58. > :29:01.of us, thanks for watching, and good night.
