:00:15. > :00:24.And he has done it. Her Majesty will present the trophy to a British

:00:25. > :00:33.winner. Oh, that is brilliant. Oh, yes. That is brilliant.

:00:34. > :00:46.Irresistible, majestic, in a class of her own. This is the most polite

:00:47. > :00:49.sporting stampede you will ever see, enthusiastic tennis fans making

:00:50. > :00:54.their way to the show courts where they will be cheering on defending

:00:55. > :00:59.champion, Andy Murray and also Rafael Nadal. Venus Williams, the

:01:00. > :01:07.five times champion and British number one Johanna Konta. There are

:01:08. > :01:16.65 matches on the opening day and we will be bringing you the best of the

:01:17. > :01:17.action on today at Wimbledon. Coming up: We will see how Murray moved on

:01:18. > :01:20.centre court after nursing his dodgy hip. As defending champion he was

:01:21. > :01:24.the opening days of the day. It is injury watch for the other number

:01:25. > :01:30.one as well, but Johanna Konta says she is good to go. And after an

:01:31. > :01:35.emotional French Open for Rafael Nadal, he is hoping to roll back the

:01:36. > :01:40.years with his first match on grass since 2015.

:01:41. > :01:44.And it is the most lovely evening in south-west London. It is the best

:01:45. > :01:50.weather of the day. It is the first time Wimbledon has started this

:01:51. > :01:55.late, in July, since 1896 when Queen Victoria was on the throne. Looking

:01:56. > :01:59.back at the action of the opening day I2 people who made their debut

:02:00. > :02:06.at Wimbledon 40 years ago, John McEnroe and Tracy Austin. It was 40

:02:07. > :02:13.years ago today. And this is what you looked like and you had a great

:02:14. > :02:18.run. I came out of nowhere. I was totally unknown. Then I ran into

:02:19. > :02:23.this guy who would not speak to me. In the semifinals. I got to the

:02:24. > :02:30.semifinals and qualified and 18 matches and I still lost. It is a

:02:31. > :02:37.thrill that you are still here. And you turned out for the first time in

:02:38. > :02:44.1977 when you were a baby. 14. When you look at the photo, the racket is

:02:45. > :03:00.bigger than you are. I wait about ?89. What do you way now? 95lbs? I

:03:01. > :03:04.was more worried about the patsy than winning. It was a dream come

:03:05. > :03:13.true to be playing at Wimbledon. Just to update you on the match with

:03:14. > :03:16.Aljaz Bedene and Ivo Karlovic. We will be dipping backwards and

:03:17. > :03:21.forwards into that match, but many people coming in from work will be

:03:22. > :03:25.wanting to know what happened to the defending champions open proceedings

:03:26. > :03:34.on centre court, Andy Murray. Is there. Wimbledon champion again. A

:03:35. > :03:39.supreme performance. A first-class turnaround. Andy Murray. After the

:03:40. > :03:44.long climb to the top of the world it is inevitable that you have to

:03:45. > :03:51.look down and sometimes you will stumble, tumble, grumble. It is a

:03:52. > :03:54.bit stressful because I want to be prepared and be at the practising

:03:55. > :04:12.and I have not been in that position, but I feel much better now

:04:13. > :04:14.and I am looking forward to getting going. Rising from the east to meet

:04:15. > :04:15.him, Alexander Bublik from Kazakhstan. I get a chance on the

:04:16. > :04:27.Centre Court against the best player in the world. For Alexander Bublik,

:04:28. > :04:33.this is a bonus, a shot at the King. Andy is fine. This is the welcome

:04:34. > :04:37.that Andy Murray got when he walked out on Centre Court and Alexander

:04:38. > :04:43.Bublik is 20 years old and is ranked 134 in the world. He believes in

:04:44. > :04:48.surprise tennis. Even he does not know what he is going to play until

:04:49. > :04:58.he plays the shot. We will show you the best of it. Joining them in the

:04:59. > :05:13.first set. Andy Murray is 4-1 up and it is 15-30 on the first serve.

:05:14. > :05:19.This is a stunning piece of work. Going out your opponent is

:05:20. > :05:26.absolutely fair game, but you have to be ready and wrap it up. I

:05:27. > :05:57.thought he gave him a bit of stair afterwards.

:05:58. > :06:39.I am not sure that was the wisest of choices, the forehand slice.

:06:40. > :06:46.You really have to push off to cover the rest of the court with a wide

:06:47. > :07:14.forehand. This is where we can tell how serious that injury is.

:07:15. > :07:56.And finally Alexander Bublik wins one of these exchanges. There is no

:07:57. > :08:13.way between point that Andy Murray is moving like a panther. He is

:08:14. > :08:14.definitely uncomfortable. He has had some injections. You have got seven

:08:15. > :08:46.matches in a grand slam tournament if you want to win.

:08:47. > :08:54.Another entertaining rally. I have seen some opening matches that have

:08:55. > :09:11.been far less exciting than this one and we are only 25 minutes into it.

:09:12. > :09:18.It puts me in mind of the match that he played against Richard Gasquet

:09:19. > :09:24.here when he played a passing shot and almost ran into the crowd. This

:09:25. > :09:27.is a lovely touch from Andy Murray down the line. A bit of a slice as

:09:28. > :10:03.well just to take it away. It was on the side of the court

:10:04. > :10:07.where the umpire is, so he had a perfect view. Andy Murray has

:10:08. > :10:39.challenged this one. Andy Murray pretty much seals the

:10:40. > :10:46.first set with that double break. Murray went on to hold serve to

:10:47. > :10:50.indeed seal the first set. 6-1 was the score, but Alexander Bublik won

:10:51. > :10:56.many fans on centre court with his style of play and general attitude.

:10:57. > :11:01.But it is good news for Andy Murray fans, he is moving all right. This

:11:02. > :11:02.is the second set and the fifth game and it is and Alexander Bublik is

:11:03. > :11:29.serving. I am looking for the two wrappers.

:11:30. > :11:36.There are supposed to be two wrappers in the Alexander Bublik

:11:37. > :11:47.box. There are two seeds available still, maybe they are a little late.

:11:48. > :11:55.They often have long night. Spot the rapper anybody.

:11:56. > :12:13.Don't tell me, another forehand slice drop shot, at juice. Maybe the

:12:14. > :12:18.rappers went to the wrong box. Come on, Alexander Bublik, get this game

:12:19. > :12:23.going and make it competitive. We like Andy Murray, but we quite like

:12:24. > :12:26.this young man as well. What is he going to do next? I do not think he

:12:27. > :13:25.knows. There was a little bit of good

:13:26. > :13:30.fortune in that, but there was even more good tennis. This is gorgeous.

:13:31. > :13:42.I think he just put his racket there, but he has got the touch.

:13:43. > :13:47.Alexander Bublik seemed to warm up on the serve a little bit there. The

:13:48. > :14:08.first delivery was much better. He is orchestrating the crowds now.

:14:09. > :14:13.He may have been settling into the centre court, but Andy Murray

:14:14. > :14:17.maintained the advantage and was soon serving for the second set, but

:14:18. > :15:27.found himself at 0- 40. Well, some theatrical shrieks

:15:28. > :15:28.really. I forehand error. Andy Murray needs to keep it together now

:15:29. > :16:02.when he needs it most. Alexander Bublik has had five break

:16:03. > :16:11.points and he has taken none of them. He shows his excitement to his

:16:12. > :16:54.box. Oh, wow. And again the decibel

:16:55. > :17:01.volume from Alexander Bublik went up, match in complete silence by

:17:02. > :17:07.this piece of work. He does not miss many of them. Still hanging in at

:17:08. > :17:12.that moment. Completely off the court. That is the sign of a

:17:13. > :17:43.champion. Five straight points, Andy Murray

:17:44. > :17:49.recoveries and is two set up in defence of his championship at

:17:50. > :17:54.Wimbledon. The last thing Andy Murray wanted was any sign of rain

:17:55. > :18:00.because already a sleepy green court would get a bit too greasy. They

:18:01. > :18:08.came on with just the lightest of showers when the outside courts

:18:09. > :18:14.carried on. They had a second rain break as well. But soon they were

:18:15. > :18:18.back again and they settled into their rhythm. Let's join the action

:18:19. > :18:42.in the third set with Alexander Bublik to serve once again.

:18:43. > :18:49.It is a lovely shot here. I am surprised Andy Murray is still

:18:50. > :19:45.chasing these. Do you think he spoke to his coach,

:19:46. > :19:57.his father, beforehand to say we are going to do the shots? They must

:19:58. > :20:03.have talked about something. Every strategy has to be revised once the

:20:04. > :20:14.first set is over. What is good, you keep it. What is bad, you change it.

:20:15. > :20:21.Oh, here we go. Andy Murray just making sure the ball had bounced

:20:22. > :20:29.twice before he touched the net. This had a lot of backspin on it and

:20:30. > :20:39.it bounced towards the net. Alexander Bublik was going, did he

:20:40. > :20:45.touched the net? No. That is a devastating return. I know it did

:20:46. > :20:51.not look that much, but that was a 135 mph serve and Andy Murray in

:20:52. > :20:59.knock it back like it was nothing. Although it was 3:35pm by the time

:21:00. > :21:02.they got too much point, in fact the match only stood at one hour and 44

:21:03. > :21:08.minutes and Andy Murray was on the run. He made Alexander Bublik

:21:09. > :21:18.struggle and the challenge was over and Andy Murray went through, 6-1,

:21:19. > :21:23.6-4, 6-2. Yesterday I had a good practice and it was the best I had

:21:24. > :21:28.felt for a little while. Once I got out there today I moved really well

:21:29. > :21:33.from the beginning of the match and that gave me a bit of confidence. If

:21:34. > :21:37.I had been a bit unsure of my footing and if I had slipped earlier

:21:38. > :21:42.in the match, maybe that could have thrown me off a bit, but I moved

:21:43. > :21:48.really well and I felt good today. That was the best day of my life so

:21:49. > :21:53.far, playing Andy, the defending champion, world number one at

:21:54. > :22:04.Wimbledon. Especially when I have already said goodbye to Wimbledon,

:22:05. > :22:05.the first round qualifying, it was my day. He made it fun. How did you

:22:06. > :22:10.rate that as a match and a performance? He did a lot of good

:22:11. > :22:16.things. He was down a few break points early, once he got at it,

:22:17. > :22:20.then reality set in with this young kid. He has got a lot of upside but

:22:21. > :22:26.in this day and age discipline is more important than ever and maybe

:22:27. > :22:30.we could have got away with a bit more, but you cannot show that lack

:22:31. > :22:33.of discipline in the shot selection and you need to be as fit as ever

:22:34. > :22:39.and it caught up with him pretty quickly. Boris was having some

:22:40. > :22:44.pretty frustrating, tree. What did you think about Andy Murray's

:22:45. > :22:49.movement? Did he look fit and sound to you? It is difficult to say. I do

:22:50. > :22:54.not think it was the type of test that you can determine. He moves

:22:55. > :23:00.well, he knows how to play on this surface, obviously. He uses his game

:23:01. > :23:06.to his advantage. He knows in the first few days it is more slick.

:23:07. > :23:10.This tournament started later than it has in over 100 years and it has

:23:11. > :23:16.been warmer in Great Britain than it has been normally, so the court is

:23:17. > :23:20.already playing better, firmer and dryer than in previous Wimbledons

:23:21. > :23:24.and that has helped the players, including Andy Murray. He has

:23:25. > :23:33.thought about that here and the hip bone is connected to the backbone,

:23:34. > :23:37.etc. He will now face Dustin Brown and this will be another hugely

:23:38. > :23:40.entertaining match. We love Dustin Brown, we saw him a couple of years

:23:41. > :23:50.ago knocking out Rafael Nadal in four sets. He is just a great player

:23:51. > :23:53.to watch. He is entertaining, a great athlete, but he can be

:23:54. > :23:59.dangerous as well, he does not give you great rhythm. It was so

:24:00. > :24:05.important for Andy to get the confidence today and in his hip, but

:24:06. > :24:09.we know Dustin Brown can be dangerous on this surface. He beat

:24:10. > :24:16.Rafael Nadal, it was his last match here does not years ago. He has got

:24:17. > :24:23.big points. He is someone who will love every minute of it and he is

:24:24. > :24:27.proving to be dangerous. Maybe even Court Number One. It has got to be

:24:28. > :24:30.on Centre Court. In the press conference afterwards he was asked

:24:31. > :24:37.with how will you deal with not being the fan's favourite? And he

:24:38. > :24:45.said maybe I will be. Let's catch up with Aljaz Bedene and Ivo Karlovic.

:24:46. > :24:49.We are into a fifth set and Aljaz Bedene, the British number three and

:24:50. > :24:54.world number 58 took his chance and he knocked out the big man. He

:24:55. > :25:18.knocked at the 21st C, Ivo Karlovic of creation, always regarded as such

:25:19. > :25:21.a dangerous player on grass because of his height. That is so impressive

:25:22. > :25:24.to come up with those goods. His serve is so high and it bounces up

:25:25. > :25:29.so high. Aljaz Bedene is deservedly thrilled. But so will all the other

:25:30. > :25:41.players be thrilled because of this guy's serve. Even at the age of 38.

:25:42. > :25:47.I think he called the trainer. He had some issue with his arm, so his

:25:48. > :25:51.serve was only getting up to 140 miles an hour and it gave Aljaz

:25:52. > :25:55.Bedene perchance. Talking of injuries, one of the most exciting

:25:56. > :25:59.players is out because of injury, Nick Kyrgios. He came out wearing

:26:00. > :26:05.what looked like bandages all the way down his legs, they were tight

:26:06. > :26:10.leggings. He had picked up a hip injury at Queen's and he lost the

:26:11. > :26:18.first two sets, but then he threw the towel in and despite all the

:26:19. > :26:21.physio treatment he went out. He said he spoke to the physios and

:26:22. > :26:27.leaned toward not playing, but Wimbledon is his favourite

:26:28. > :26:30.tournament. It is a tough spring for him because he lost his grandfather

:26:31. > :26:33.and he picked up that hip injury that in Madrid and he tried to play

:26:34. > :26:39.through it and he was not at his best in the French as well. He said

:26:40. > :26:47.he had an injection after Queen's and he stopped playing, but then he

:26:48. > :26:50.reinject himself. You notice the hip is also connected to the back and

:26:51. > :26:57.the knees and you keep going up and then it gets to this part. He is one

:26:58. > :27:04.of the most talented tennis players in terms of his raw ability and his

:27:05. > :27:10.ability to move and his athleticism. Have you ever heard of meatloaf? He

:27:11. > :27:20.had a great song, two out of three ain't bad. You have got to have all

:27:21. > :27:24.three if you want to win a major. He started well at the beginning of the

:27:25. > :27:28.year. He played a great match against Federer in Miami. But if you

:27:29. > :27:32.are hurt it is a different story. I hope for the good of the game and

:27:33. > :27:37.for Nick that he can figure out a way to be able to put it together

:27:38. > :27:43.and compete. That is the part that seems to be the biggest problem.

:27:44. > :27:47.Talking of competing or not competing, there may well have been

:27:48. > :27:52.an injury, but what was happening to Stan Wawrinka out on Centre Court

:27:53. > :27:59.today? He was up against Daniel Medvedev and this was match point.

:28:00. > :28:13.You saw all of it, John. I did. What happened is inexplicable for a guy

:28:14. > :28:15.who has the chance to join eight other players in the sport. To have

:28:16. > :28:18.a career Grand Slam. He has played at the French and Wimbledon. He is

:28:19. > :28:23.not confident with movement at Wimbledon. He does not quite get

:28:24. > :28:29.what he needs to do. This was a tough match. But you have to get

:28:30. > :28:33.Sigmund Freud out at times to wonder why when there was such an upside.

:28:34. > :28:37.He would have been number one in the world had he won this tournament. I

:28:38. > :28:45.know that is odd when there are other great players. But to see him

:28:46. > :28:51.not want to be out there in the fourth set, kind of get me off the

:28:52. > :28:56.court. It is upsetting as a fan of his and as an ex-tennis player. You

:28:57. > :29:00.never want to see that when someone stops competing. He had the trainer

:29:01. > :29:08.out numerous times. He had strapped his knee before. I am assuming there

:29:09. > :29:12.was an issue before the match. I guess he has never been past the

:29:13. > :29:22.quarters before at Wimbledon. He tried to bring in that chip return.

:29:23. > :29:26.As a serve and volley and he plays well on this surface, so he is

:29:27. > :29:32.trying to figure it out. It was disappointing to see that little

:29:33. > :29:36.lack of effort. But we have to give Daniel Medvedev credit. He has had

:29:37. > :29:41.some great results in the last few weeks on grass. For his debut to go

:29:42. > :29:42.out and play stand on that court and get the win, you have to give him

:29:43. > :29:51.credit. Medvedev is a natural. He gets it in

:29:52. > :29:55.terms of strategy, in terms of using the court to his advantage. His

:29:56. > :30:03.height. That was good. When you see a guy icing during a match, Clare! I

:30:04. > :30:07.will take that in. I will not do that. Next time you play in

:30:08. > :30:11.Wimbledon in the mixed doubles! We move on to somebody who was playing

:30:12. > :30:14.late tonight, Victoria Azarenka is back here at Wimbledon. Let's show

:30:15. > :30:30.you match point. This is against Catherine Bellis.

:30:31. > :30:34.She's 18. CC Bellis is in the top 40 of the world. Turned pro less than a

:30:35. > :30:38.year ago. This is Victoria Azarenka's second tournament back,

:30:39. > :30:41.played in New York a couple of weeks ago, of course after delivering her

:30:42. > :30:49.little boy at the end of December last year. Leo, he's called? It is

:30:50. > :30:52.great to have her back. She said she would come back for the hard courts

:30:53. > :30:56.in a few weeks. She said her training was going so well, she

:30:57. > :31:00.moved it up to Majorca and to Wimbledon. This has not been her

:31:01. > :31:04.favourite surface. She's a two-time semi-finalist here. Bellis is very

:31:05. > :31:07.talented. Only 18. Someone to watch for the future. Bellis won that

:31:08. > :31:12.first set. A lot of pressure on Azarenka. She really played so much

:31:13. > :31:21.better. So much more accurate in the second two sets. My favourite two

:31:22. > :31:26.players ever in the female game - a mum and won a major and Clijsters.

:31:27. > :31:31.She was able to do it too. It would be nice to see Victoria, because

:31:32. > :31:42.she's been for a while and obviously a mum now as well, to see her pull

:31:43. > :31:49.it off. She's young enough. The fifth bidding to become a champion

:31:50. > :31:53.You would think any one of the players would fancy their chances of

:31:54. > :32:00.winning. Into that mix goes Konta continue. Had she recovers from a

:32:01. > :32:05.nasty looking fall just last week. This year's Wimbledon will be

:32:06. > :32:11.different for Konta. She's hurtled from belief, to hope to expectation

:32:12. > :32:17.in the eyes of the nation. Last week those eyes wined. Watching it back.

:32:18. > :32:22.It was no good. Oh, my goodness! Really distressing scenes. I am

:32:23. > :32:29.doing all I can to recover well. But also I am making sure I am medically

:32:30. > :32:37.fit to compete here. Konta's campaign to become the first British

:32:38. > :32:43.woman to win Wimbledon in 40 years started against Su-Wei Hsieh.

:32:44. > :32:49.And it started fairly sedately but didn't take long for Konta to show

:32:50. > :33:07.her class. We join it at 1-1. Hsieh is serving.

:33:08. > :33:12.THE COMMENTATOR: She'll have another chance. A different sound as the

:33:13. > :33:15.ball comes off the racket from Konta.

:33:16. > :33:20.Well, she's trying to stamp her authority early in this match. And

:33:21. > :33:29.she's dictating, taking charge out here. Very commanding play.

:33:30. > :33:32.Struggling to get behind that ball. Really needs to get her body weight

:33:33. > :33:34.behind the ball and transfer through it. At the moment she's a little bit

:33:35. > :33:55.late on it. A little cry from Konta. And she has

:33:56. > :34:02.the break in this first set. And the number six seed in control.

:34:03. > :34:07.They traded breaks before Konta took control. We join with Konta serving

:34:08. > :34:13.for the first set. 5-2, she leads. Comment taters, Andrew Cotter and

:34:14. > :34:24.Annabelle Croft. THE COMMENTATOR: This time it is

:34:25. > :34:37.well judged by Konta. Seen a lot of this drop shot over

:34:38. > :34:41.the course of the grass course season. It is relatively a new

:34:42. > :34:43.addition to her game. See a little grip change there. Not just about

:34:44. > :35:13.power on the court. If you are being critical, you would

:35:14. > :35:23.say there are still a few mistakes which hopefully are being jettisoned

:35:24. > :35:25.from the game in the first round, things that Konta and her coaches

:35:26. > :35:32.will look to tighten up. So the number six seeds arrive at

:35:33. > :36:05.set point. Oh, what a get! What a way to win

:36:06. > :36:09.the first set. Konta surprised herself there. Applause from her

:36:10. > :36:12.coach and job done in this first set.

:36:13. > :36:16.Konta looking good and feeling good, despite a wobble at the start of the

:36:17. > :37:02.second set. That time of day when it can be just

:37:03. > :37:03.a little tricky, the ball coming out of the shadows, into the bright

:37:04. > :37:08.sunshine. CLARE BALDING: Here is Konta serving

:37:09. > :37:24.for the match, despite that wobble. ANNABELLE CROFT: Rock solid from

:37:25. > :38:13.Konta. That's out! Konta need not

:38:14. > :38:17.challenge. An example of getting down to those low-flying bounces.

:38:18. > :38:45.Just a great dip of the knees. Applause from Court Number One and

:38:46. > :38:54.the British number one has three match points.

:38:55. > :39:04.Well, a challenge at the end from Su-Wei Hsieh. We will end on the say

:39:05. > :39:08.of Hawk-Eye. It is either an ace to win the match, or a second serve and

:39:09. > :39:12.it's an ace to win the match for Johanna Konta.

:39:13. > :39:16.And it is a very tidy, very impressive performance.

:39:17. > :39:22.What we thought might be a potential banana skin didn't prove to be that

:39:23. > :39:26.in anyway. Johanna Konta has stepped up and delivered. There is a smile

:39:27. > :39:31.now. I am very happy to have come through

:39:32. > :39:37.that. She's a tricky player. Obviously lost to her in a close

:39:38. > :39:40.recent match and the French Open. Looking forward to playing her

:39:41. > :39:45.again, to try and beat her. I am happy I was able to come through

:39:46. > :39:49.that. Your recent injury is well documented. How are you feeling

:39:50. > :39:54.today? After I hit yesterday there was definitely one of the first

:39:55. > :39:57.tests to see how I was hitting-wise and I have been feeling pretty good.

:39:58. > :40:07.A really tough day for Konta, not only recover from a fall, but she

:40:08. > :40:12.was beaten by Hsieh in the first round of the French Open. To me, it

:40:13. > :40:16.shows the difference in surface. Su-Wei Hsieh is a defensive player.

:40:17. > :40:24.She does not have a lot of power, but gets balls back in play. Konta

:40:25. > :40:28.not so comfortable on the clay. She now get her on the grass. A bit

:40:29. > :40:32.hitter of the ground strokes. This is the type of player she can run

:40:33. > :40:36.through and she did. Great to see that her back is feeling fine. That

:40:37. > :40:41.was a nasty fall. She was amazing to get up and carry on and win the

:40:42. > :40:45.match. Pulled out and then tried to get right for this. Wimbledon really

:40:46. > :40:50.matters to her. How impressed are you with Konta's improvement to her

:40:51. > :40:53.mental state? As John said about the men, two out of three ain't got

:40:54. > :40:58.enough. Has Konta got the three elements she needs That is why

:40:59. > :41:01.coming back to Wimbledon is in the top ten. It is a different landscape

:41:02. > :41:07.for her. There are more expectations. She seems to be

:41:08. > :41:13.handling the pressure. She worked with a mental trainer for years. It

:41:14. > :41:17.seems to kick in now in her mid-20s. She knows who how to focus on the

:41:18. > :41:21.next point in the match and not necessarily the results. That is so

:41:22. > :41:26.helpful. She hasn't had a lot of success here at Wimbledon. She's

:41:27. > :41:31.still got things to work in. Even in today's match you could see that.

:41:32. > :41:35.She's a bit mechanical for this surface. I think her best is hard

:41:36. > :41:43.courts. You mention at the beginning of the show, obviously it is so wide

:41:44. > :41:48.open. It leads me to believe someone like Konta will say, wait a second I

:41:49. > :41:53.have got to get my act together here. There's no reason it shouldn't

:41:54. > :41:57.be. Konta has never been past the second round of Wimbledon, but she's

:41:58. > :42:02.a completely different player now, in the top ten, winning Miami. That

:42:03. > :42:05.is a big title to win. Dealing with finishing that tournament and

:42:06. > :42:09.winning all of those matches against top players. She's just in a

:42:10. > :42:13.different place and great improvement in 12 months. An example

:42:14. > :42:17.of some of the stuff she will analyse and think I can improve on

:42:18. > :42:19.that. Let's talk about two former lady champions. Because there are

:42:20. > :42:37.some massive names in action. And Venus Williams, tloo through to

:42:38. > :42:38.the second round. Five-times champion winning against Elise

:42:39. > :43:00.Mertens of Belgium. We will hear from Venus in a moment.

:43:01. > :43:13.Kvitova, she had huge support from the crowds. She beat Larsson, 6-3,

:43:14. > :43:17.6-4. Venus Williams broke down in tears

:43:18. > :43:20.as she was questioned in the press conference about an incident which

:43:21. > :43:25.happened in which a man was badly injured and actually then died. And

:43:26. > :43:29.this was Venus's response to a question about that car accident.

:43:30. > :43:31.She was driving the car. In the press

:43:32. > :43:35.??FORCEWHITE REPORTER: Do you think having gone

:43:36. > :43:39.through all the things you have, both mentally and Physically that

:43:40. > :43:42.will help you deal with this situation when you are just trying

:43:43. > :43:50.to be a tennis player? No idea what Vy tomorrow will bring. That's all I

:43:51. > :43:54.can say. That's what I've learned. I saw that you wrote on your Facebook

:43:55. > :44:01.some heart-felt words about the accident. Is there anything else you

:44:02. > :44:10.want to say about that? That, that words cannot really describe how

:44:11. > :44:18.devastating and, yeah, I, completely speechless and it's just... Yeah...

:44:19. > :44:31.I mean, I'm just... Before we take any further questions

:44:32. > :44:35.from Venus, please be aware she's unable to say anything more about

:44:36. > :44:40.this. So, I'd ask you to respect her wishes, please.

:44:41. > :44:49.And just a desperate incident and Venus actually, I think amazing to

:44:50. > :44:53.be here at all, don't you? I can't even imagine what she's going

:44:54. > :44:59.through now. It was a car accident June 9th. A collision, a 78-year-old

:45:00. > :45:03.man, a passenger in a car, his wife was driving. He had bad injuries.

:45:04. > :45:08.Two weeks later he passed away. So obviously in the last couple of days

:45:09. > :45:12.we've come to know about this. Venus already over here and decided to

:45:13. > :45:18.play. She played a good match. I mean, this is her 20th Wimbledon.

:45:19. > :45:21.She's 37 years old. She's part of the conversation as a player that

:45:22. > :45:31.can win. Can she get past this? This has to be so, so emotional. You have

:45:32. > :45:35.two opposite situations, you mention Kvitov, she feels lucky to be here.

:45:36. > :45:39.None of us have any idea of what actually happened with Venus. Either

:45:40. > :45:44.way, whether it turns out she wasn't responsible or in some way she was,

:45:45. > :45:55.you know, she feels horrible and has a tremendous sense of guilt. It's

:45:56. > :46:01.got to be impossible to put into compartments.

:46:02. > :46:04.I guess, if you are on court you are protected, but you are not at a

:46:05. > :46:09.press conference and maybe particularly here. I can vouch for

:46:10. > :46:13.that. I would suspect she wouldn't get asked about it again after that

:46:14. > :46:15.reaction. I am not sure she can say anything about it, legally, so... We

:46:16. > :46:30.have to talk about Kvitov. That she was cut by an intruder. There

:46:31. > :46:37.was a question about whether she would ever be able to play tennis

:46:38. > :46:40.again. She had seven tendons and two nerves cut. She came back at the

:46:41. > :46:44.French Open. She got to the second round there. Played very well. Won

:46:45. > :46:50.Birmingham a couple of weeks ago. Which is amazing because the woman's

:46:51. > :46:55.draw is so wide open, by her winning Birmingham, a couple of weeks ago,

:46:56. > :47:02.people are saying, is she part of the conversation? Another former

:47:03. > :47:07.champion who was in action today and made history earlier this year when

:47:08. > :47:14.he won a Grand Slam for the tenth time, when he completed at the

:47:15. > :47:22.French Open, Rafael Nadal. He was in action against Millman. And Rafa was

:47:23. > :47:27.flying. He looked happy. He looked great.

:47:28. > :47:29.Who knows, when Federer plays back tomorrow we could roll back the

:47:30. > :47:36.years. Now, we have on today at Wimbledon,

:47:37. > :47:40.every day our shot of the day. And I think there was quite a lot of

:47:41. > :47:47.competition for it today. Did you see anything you would have gone

:47:48. > :47:51.for? Are these trick shots or? No I can't recall! There is a rally first

:47:52. > :48:14.from the Nadal match that you ought to see. This was exceptional.

:48:15. > :48:49.Wow! So that could have qualified for shot of the day. Frankly it was

:48:50. > :48:50.rally of the day. A slightly shorter version gets shot of the day. Here

:48:51. > :48:57.it is. This is from Andy Murray's match.

:48:58. > :49:21.This against Bublik. It died on the grass. It was

:49:22. > :49:29.fantastic. Last week I saw that from him. Did you? No! Probably 40 years

:49:30. > :49:32.ago! Aside from Murray and Konta there were five other British

:49:33. > :49:38.players in action today. Here is Phil Jones with a round-up.

:49:39. > :49:48.Remember him? Marcus Willis, turned leading man. Tomorrow Alex Ward

:49:49. > :49:56.hopes to similarly take the spotlight. While today Norrie was

:49:57. > :49:59.another Briton hoping to play out a feel good happy ending against

:50:00. > :50:03.Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. France's finest who has beaten Roger Federer in the

:50:04. > :50:08.past, doesn't always fine his heyday peak. He's a foremid-able opponent

:50:09. > :50:14.for someone ranked 220 places below him. Norrie practiced last week with

:50:15. > :50:19.Andy Murray. You know what practise makes? Norrie, he of Welsh mother,

:50:20. > :50:22.Scottish father, born in South Africa, raised in New Zealand and

:50:23. > :50:26.England and based in the United States, showed a good deal of good

:50:27. > :50:32.old British spirit before he was floored by the Frenchman in straight

:50:33. > :50:38.sets. Remember when Laura Robson won the junior title here? That was ten

:50:39. > :50:43.Wimbledons ago. She grew to become the only British women to reach the

:50:44. > :50:50.women's singles. Now 23 and hoping to climb from an injury-fed decent,

:50:51. > :50:56.Robson saved her best until almost last, saving two match points.

:50:57. > :51:01.There was no extraordinary comeback from there, though and Robson bowed

:51:02. > :51:05.out in straight sets. Remember when Broady won her only

:51:06. > :51:12.singles match at Wimbledon? That was three years ago. Her grass court

:51:13. > :51:23.warm up hinted at a second win in six attempts here against Begu. But

:51:24. > :51:27.Broady didn't take the hint. Remember when Watson was two points

:51:28. > :51:33.away from beating Serena Williams at Wimbledon. That was two years ago.

:51:34. > :51:38.Watson needed a wild card for 2017. Glimmers of hope from Eastbourne

:51:39. > :51:41.turned into glaring lights of success as she swept to the first

:51:42. > :51:48.set. And she took victory on a fourth

:51:49. > :51:56.match point in the second set tie-break, just ahead of six wins in

:51:57. > :52:01.eight Wimbledons and more to come. Add Murray, Konta, and that is four

:52:02. > :52:06.British winners today. They will be back on wents. That is fabulous

:52:07. > :52:11.news. -- Wednesday. That is fabulous news.

:52:12. > :52:26.Halep's opponent may have make her own mixed tape. The album is called

:52:27. > :52:29.Go My Way, which this didn't. 6-4, 6-1, the second seed is looking for

:52:30. > :52:38.her first Grand Slam and could head to number one. Who knows? Nishikori

:52:39. > :52:43.may find broken glass to play on than moan grass. On his last five

:52:44. > :52:53.tournaments on turf, he's ended up injured. Careful! No tumbles or

:52:54. > :53:00.troubles against Cec kirks, narto. He only managed to keep this going

:53:01. > :53:04.for an hour and a quarter. Nishikori through safe and sound. Also

:53:05. > :53:09.enjoying a helpfully unmanic Monday was Marin Cilic. Fresh from the

:53:10. > :53:14.Queen's final. Many fancy his chances. They got more evidence in

:53:15. > :53:18.his emphatic dispatching of Kohlschreiber. The German was once

:53:19. > :53:21.in the top 20, but has not won a match at Wimbledon since 2014. And

:53:22. > :53:26.Cilic gave him no hope of ending that run. All over in three. Maybe

:53:27. > :53:31.Cilic can go beyond the last eight this time. A round further than

:53:32. > :53:37.Anderson has ventured. He is through, but went down a set and was

:53:38. > :53:43.a little way ward, to one spectator's benefit. He's got the

:53:44. > :53:49.ball! He's going to keep it! One less to be loaded in the cat pault.

:53:50. > :53:53.He battered his way through two tie-breaks and won it in the fourth.

:53:54. > :54:01.The whereabouts of the ball is still unknown!

:54:02. > :54:04.Petkovic saved five match points and gave everything.

:54:05. > :54:11.Oh, no! Eventually the number eight seed got

:54:12. > :54:15.over the line, but it had taken her nearly two and three quarter hours

:54:16. > :54:19.and a lot of energy. Luxembourg has only two singles

:54:20. > :54:23.players at Wimbledon and one of them wasn't missing this for any reason,

:54:24. > :54:27.even if that reason is she's four-and-a-half months pregnant. Her

:54:28. > :54:35.opponent still going strong at 37, had too much on this occasion. So,

:54:36. > :54:43.afterwards she said she will take a break and have a well-erned rest.

:54:44. > :54:51.Four-and-a-half months pregnant. Now the big question is, should Serena

:54:52. > :54:54.Williams have played on longer? This is her timely Instgram story. She is

:54:55. > :55:22.due in two months. It was 20 minutes, but 20 minutes of

:55:23. > :55:27.fun. I'm going to jump in the pool and relax.

:55:28. > :55:31.She will probably do 40 lengths in the pool! That will be her idea of

:55:32. > :55:37.relactsing. She's staying fit. She is. Two weeks ago, she showed us a

:55:38. > :55:41.video, she looked like she was striking the ball as well as she

:55:42. > :55:46.always has. The movement is a bit curtailed, but I think she's clearly

:55:47. > :55:50.ready for a comeback she has her baby. That would be some story. I'm

:55:51. > :55:57.not saying anything. It is your chance. When's the show over? I

:55:58. > :56:04.don't want to put my foot in my mouth! You could have got yourself

:56:05. > :56:07.out of it. I should have played her right now when her movement is not

:56:08. > :56:11.as good as it normally is. Let's look at the order of play tomorrow,

:56:12. > :56:18.because there are some fabulous matches coming up.

:56:19. > :56:26.Kerber against Falconi. That is the first match on centre.

:56:27. > :56:34.Djokovic, second on. Federer is third on Centre.

:56:35. > :56:40.Raonic, runner up last year to Murray. Followed by Pliskova, who is

:56:41. > :56:47.the Eastbourne champion. And Dominic Thiem as well. He was runner up at

:56:48. > :56:51.Roland Garros. And del Potro will be on court two. The weather forecast,

:56:52. > :56:55.if you have tickets for tomorrow, the morning will be a bit cloudy,

:56:56. > :57:01.but bright with a little sunshine at times and the afternoon will become

:57:02. > :57:05.warm with sunny spells developing and the Tempah praure will reach 25

:57:06. > :57:09.Celsius. No more than an outside chance of a light shower tomorrow

:57:10. > :57:22.afternoon. Now I wanted to talk to you about the newest Grand Slam

:57:23. > :57:28.champion in the women's game. Ostapenko. The first time Grand Slam

:57:29. > :57:31.players have had trouble with all the expectations, she played well in

:57:32. > :57:35.Eastbourne last week. She had a three-setter today. She's only 20

:57:36. > :57:39.years old. That is a bad challenge right there. It is one of those

:57:40. > :57:45.desperate challenges on match point, of which we see many. I think they

:57:46. > :57:58.should be banned. I love how she plays. She What do you think of her

:57:59. > :58:03.I think Monica Sellis is a great comparison. I heard her name, but I

:58:04. > :58:09.hadn't seen her and I watched her a at the French. When she was down to

:58:10. > :58:14.Halep, I was like, OK, what will the field be like? She kept playing away

:58:15. > :58:17.and an amazing effort. I am not surprised she's playing that

:58:18. > :58:22.intensity here. It is brilliant. Who has impressed you most today? I had

:58:23. > :58:26.to pick one guy, a guy you don't talk much about, I would say Cilic.

:58:27. > :58:31.Cilic had a shot with Federer last year. And he's playing really well,

:58:32. > :58:37.I think. So he is positioning himself. I am not saying, that is

:58:38. > :58:44.not my pick, but the best, he looked good. And Tracey? For me Keys. After

:58:45. > :58:49.the French Open she had her second wrist surgery and had to take ten

:58:50. > :58:53.days off. She came back, we think way sooner than we thought here at

:58:54. > :58:59.Wimbledon and she won easily. Thank you both. We get to enjoy the

:59:00. > :59:01.graceful movement of Federer. See you tomorrow evening, but Sue will

:59:02. > :59:16.be back at 11. 30am. BBC Sport and Wimbledon,

:59:17. > :59:45.on together for 90 years. Hello, darling.

:59:46. > :59:50.You want to tell me what you saw?
